Latest / The Feminine Ledger / Founder Tax Myths: What Actually Matters as You Scale
Transcript
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Feminine Ledger, where finance becomes not just numbers, but structure, discernment, and self-leadership.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: My name is Allison Fisher, and my work focuses on helping women founders translate growth into structure so their businesses don't just expand, but actually hold.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: Today we're going to be talking about something that creates a surprising amount of pressure for founders, and that is taxes.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: But not from the perspective you've most likely heard before.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Because what I'm seeing right now across conversations, across content, across founders who are building something real, is not actually a tax problem.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: It is a perception problem.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: And beneath that, it is a structure problem.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Let's begin.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: So we're going to start with discussing the moment it starts to feel heavy.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: There is a very specific moment in business where things shift.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: It's not when you first make money.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: It's not even when you cross your first big milestone.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: It's when the income becomes meaningful, the decisions start to carry weight, and you realize you don't fully understand what's happening financially.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: And at that point, everything starts to feel heavier.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Not just your numbers, but your relationship to them.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: You might notice that you hesitate before making financial decisions.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: You second guess what you can actually afford.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: And you feel like money is coming in, but not staying.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: And this is the moment where most founders land on, I think I have a tax problem.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: But what's actually happening is much more subtle and much more important.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: So let's discuss the tax narrative.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: We are constantly surrounded by tax narratives.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Taxes are increasing.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: You need to protect your money.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: The system is taking more than it should.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: And these are powerful because these narratives tap into something deeper.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: And those deeper things are control, security, and survival.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: So when a founder hears something like there's a new 10% tax, it doesn't land as information.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: It lands as something is about to be taken from me.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: But here's where we need to separate narrative from structure.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Most tax policies are not broad, they are threshold based, which means they apply only when very specific conditions are met.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: And for the majority of founders, especially in the early and mid stages, those thresholds are not where you are operating yet.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: But because there's no clear financial visibility, everything feels like it applies.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Let's look at the financial fog.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: This is where I want to introduce something I see constantly.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: And once you see it, you won't be able to unsee it.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: And that is financial fog.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: Financial fog is what happens when you don't have clear visibility into your numbers.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: You don't fully understand how money is flowing.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: You're making decisions without structure.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: And what financial fog does is it amplifies everything.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: It makes small decisions feel large.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Normal fluctuations feel like instability.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: And like taxes feel like the problem.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: When in reality, taxes are just the most visible thing to attach that feeling to, but they're not the cause.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: The cause is lack of clarity, lack of structure, and lack of sequencing.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: And this is why two founders can be making the same amount of money and have completely different experiences.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: One feels grounded, clear, and decisive.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: The other feels uncertain, pressured, and reactive.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: Same income, different structure.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: We're going to look at the premature optimization trap.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Once that pressure is present, most founders move quickly.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: They try to fix it.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: And this is where I see the same pattern over and over again.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: They start looking at tax strategies, entity structures, and best places to form a business in.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: Particularly in the United States, that looks like the best state.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Sometimes in Europe that can look like the best country.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: They start asking, should I create an LLC?
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Should I elect S Corp?
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: And they also start asking, Am I losing money by not optimizing?
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: And none of these questions are wrong.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: But they're often being asked out of sequence.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: Because here's the truth optimization without clarity creates fragility.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: When you introduce complexity before stability, you don't create efficiency.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: You create confusion.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: And now instead of solving one problem, you've created five.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: So what is the actual path?
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: What does this actually look like when it's done correctly?
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: Not perfectly, not aggressively, but correctly.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: The first step is income consistency.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: Not perfect income, not fixed income, but enough consistency to observe patterns.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: Because without patterns, there is nothing to structure.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Second step is financial clarity.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: This is where most founders try to skip.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Understanding what is actual excuse me, what is actually coming out, what is actually coming in, what is actually available.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Not what you think, not what you estimate, what's actually happening.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: The third step is clean separation.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: This is where structure begins.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Business and personal finances have separate accounts, separate flows, and separate roles.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: Because without separation, there is no clarity.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: The fourth step is structural layering.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: Now and only now, structure becomes useful.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: This is where LLC formation makes sense, S Corp election becomes strategic.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: Not because someone told you to, but because your business now has enough stability to support it.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: And step five is optimization.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: This is the step where taxes come in.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: But notice they come in last, not first.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: Because now you understand your numbers.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: Your structure supports decision making, and your optimization is built on something stable.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: So let's look at when things actually shift.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: There is a point where taxes become more important.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: But it's not where most founders think.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: It's when income becomes substantial, five hundred thousand to one million plus, profit retention increases, and larger financial events enter the picture.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: And at that level, something shifts.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: Taxes are no longer something you react to, they become something you design around.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: This includes how income is classified, when money is realized, and where you are a tax resident, especially if you're considering living internationally.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: This often creates a bit of complexity because taxation operates very differently than in the United States.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: At this level, structure becomes strategy.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: Before that, structure is about clarity.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: Most founders are trying to solve the wrong problem.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: They think if I can just optimize this, if I can just fix taxes, if I can just structure correctly, and everything will feel easier.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: But what they actually need is clarity, stability, and sequencing.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: Because when those are in place, the numbers stop feeling heavy.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: And they start becoming something that they can see clearly, work with directly, and lead with precision.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much for being here today.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: If this episode helped you see your business a little more clearly, that is the work.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Not forcing change, not rushing structure, but allowing clarity to emerge, and then making more precise decisions from that place.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: If you are in the stage where your business is growing, but your numbers still feel unclear, the sovereign business audit is designed for exactly this.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: Until next time, stay disciplined, stay discerning, and stay sovereign.
