- 2:38Don Armstrong: Uh uh.
- 2:39Don Armstrong: Tell Jerry Lightfoot to come on by and pick up his trophy.
- 2:42Don Armstrong: There you go.
- 2:42Jeff Dziekan: That's not Jerry, is it?
- 2:43Don Armstrong: That's a very nice truck.
- 2:45Don Armstrong: That's a very nice truck.
- 2:46Don Armstrong: We like that truck.
- 2:47Don Armstrong: Yeah, so uh Jerry Lightfoot.
- 2:49Jeff Dziekan: Jerry Lightfoot for the best hot rod.
- 2:51Don Armstrong: Yeah, and that that's that's going to be uh the 56 Chevy, it's silver, and he may be down there, so you may have to go grab him or something.
- 2:59Don Armstrong: There he is right here.
- 3:00Don Armstrong: Come on, Jerry.
- 3:02Don Armstrong: Pick up your your uh chili pepper trophy, sir, and get a picture taken.
- 3:06Jeff Dziekan: Are you really Jerry or just somebody who looks like Jerry?
- 3:09Don Armstrong: You know, you you're not Jerry.
- 3:10Don Armstrong: You're not Jerry.
- 3:11Don Armstrong: We don't see a name on your shirt, so you're not Jerry.
- 3:13Don Armstrong: Oh, you're there.
- 3:14Don Armstrong: Yeah, I got it.
- 3:15Mike Marrs: All right, well, picture cameras over there.
- 3:18Don Armstrong: That's right.
- 3:19Don Armstrong: Great.
- 3:20Don Armstrong: Okay, and the next one is the best classic car, and that is Larry Feedler.
- 3:26Don Armstrong: Feedler?
- 3:26Don Armstrong: Feedler.
- 3:27Don Armstrong: Feedler.
- 3:28Don Armstrong: At the 69 Camaro Convertible orange in color.
- 3:31Don Armstrong: I saw that one coming in too.
- 3:33Don Armstrong: Where is that 69 Camaro Convertible?
- 3:37Don Armstrong: Larry Fiedler owner.
- 3:39Don Armstrong: He is the winner of this week's Chili Pepper Trophy.
- 3:43Don Armstrong: By the way, we're gonna have these same awards over at the Lupi Tortilla in Katy uh Easter Saturday.
- 3:49Don Armstrong: That's when our next remote in two weeks.
- 3:51Don Armstrong: Two, two, two weeks.
- 3:52Don Armstrong: Two weeks with the kids' car show.
- 3:54Don Armstrong: With the Sheila's kids' car show.
- 3:57Don Armstrong: So bring the kids.
- 3:58Don Armstrong: Bring the kids, and Sheila's gonna be uh taking care of all of that right now.
- 4:03Don Armstrong: Feedler, Mr.
- 4:04Jeff Dziekan: Feedler, there you go.
- 4:05Don Armstrong: You know what?
- 4:06Don Armstrong: I I I want to shake your hand, sir.
- 4:08Don Armstrong: Can I shake your hand?
- 4:09Don Armstrong: I want your car.
- 4:10Don Armstrong: I love your car.
- 4:11Don Armstrong: Thank you, thank you.
- 4:12Don Armstrong: You bet, yeah.
- 4:13Don Armstrong: Are you proud of it?
- 4:14Don Armstrong: Is it has it has it got a DZ motor in it?
- 4:17unknown: No, it's uh just 350.
- 4:19Don Armstrong: It's just a 350.
- 4:20Don Armstrong: Oh, darn.
- 4:24Don Armstrong: Yeah, exactly.
- 4:26Don Armstrong: So congratulations to all of the Chili Pepper Trophy winners.
- 4:29Don Armstrong: Thank you.
- 4:29Don Armstrong: Hope to see you next time.
- 4:31Don Armstrong: Hey, bring that car over to Katie in a couple of weeks for the next one.
- 4:34Don Armstrong: Uh so Jerry Lightfoot, uh Larry Feedler, and Chris LePointed, congratulations to all of them for the Chili Pepper Trophy winners today.
- 4:43Jeff Dziekan: And those that didn't win, there's always next time.
- 4:45Don Armstrong: Yeah, absolutely.
- 4:47Don Armstrong: I think with the success of today's show and all the people that are here, I think that there's going to be another one probably this fall.
- 4:52Don Armstrong: Don't you think?
- 4:53Don Armstrong: I would think Chase Murray, don't you think that there's going to be a fall uh tailpipes and tacos here?
- 4:59Don Armstrong: He says absolutely, so that's a good thing to know.
- 5:02Don Armstrong: Okay, well, good.
- 5:03Don Armstrong: Well, we we'll we'll definitely have it on the books.
- 5:06Don Armstrong: Okay, so in the meantime and in between time, I don't know if I want to do this story or not, because it's about the EV one, and we've had enough of EVs in my life that I don't really care to have any more.
- 5:19Don Armstrong: So I'm gonna put that down uh at the bottom of the stack.
- 5:23Don Armstrong: How's that?
- 5:24Don Armstrong: Is it okay?
- 5:25Don Armstrong: Thank you.
- 5:26Don Armstrong: Uh Porsche, in the middle of a cost-cutting drive under new CEO Michael Liters, is considering merging two nameplates, the Panamera and the Electric Take Tycon, uh, into one.
- 5:38Don Armstrong: Auto car reported March 9th that Porsche is reassessing the long-term viability of keeping the Panamera and Ticon as separate engineering programs.
- 5:47Don Armstrong: Both have a four-door layout.
- 5:51Don Armstrong: Yeah, Anaconda.
- 5:55Don Armstrong: Don't even go there, Mars.
- 5:57Don Armstrong: I know where I know where this conversation is going.
- 5:59Don Armstrong: What are you talking about?
- 6:00Don Armstrong: And it's not, yeah, yeah, right.
- 6:02Don Armstrong: Uh sources uh suggested it's exploring greater parts sharing in the possibility of a common identity if they don't go broke first.
- 6:13Don Armstrong: Thought I'd just mention that.
- 6:15Don Armstrong: Enios automotive has ventured into have you seen those cars?
- 6:20Don Armstrong: Has ventured into a new arena as it looks to become a more established automaker, the airport rental counter.
- 6:27Don Armstrong: Nice Hertz Global Holdings that it plans to stock the Grenadier SUV at 21 airport locations across the U.S.
- 6:38Jeff Dziekan: Could I have a good idea, please?
- 6:42Don Armstrong: Hertz will have hundreds of grenadiers available starting in the spring, the company spokesman said.
- 6:46Don Armstrong: Each will be outfitted with the high spec Fieldmaster trim.
- 6:52Don Armstrong: I know that's something when you go on your uh excursions, David, uh, to fix your radio stations across the globe, that you'll be renting grenadiers soon.
- 7:02Don Armstrong: Absolutely.
- 7:03Jeff Dziekan: Don't you put that as some kind of drink?
- 7:06Don Armstrong: Yeah, with a Grand Marnier topper.
- 7:08Don Armstrong: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:09Don Armstrong: Uh-huh.
- 7:10Don Armstrong: Well, um, we've finally come to the point where um I need to either No, I don't.
- 7:17Don Armstrong: I I'm gonna do this story because it's very disappointing.
- 7:22Don Armstrong: Honda has invested too much and too late in a short-lived electric vehicle boom and now finds itself saddled with an aging lineup and questions about its future as an automaker.
- 7:34Don Armstrong: Can you believe this?
- 7:35Don Armstrong: Yeah, I can't believe it.
- 7:36Don Armstrong: The Japanese company stunned investors by dropping a$15.7 billion impairment charge bomb last week, uh-uh.
- 7:46Don Armstrong: Stemming largely from its ill-timed bet on EVs.
- 7:50Don Armstrong: Some scrapped just months before debuting that it is likely a precursor to reporting its first annual loss on record.
- 8:00Don Armstrong: Long known for individual and innovative vehicles, Honda has had trouble in recent years living up to that reputation.
- 8:06Don Armstrong: Nowhere is that more the case than in the U.S., by far its largest revenue generator.
- 8:11Don Armstrong: Sales in the U.S.
- 8:12Don Armstrong: grew a sub-average 0.5% last year.
- 8:16Don Armstrong: And Honda's once promising China business also has stalled in recent years.
- 8:20Don Armstrong: Weak results from its core automobile business predate any ongoing issues with EVs, said Bloomberg Intelligence.
- 8:28Don Armstrong: The reason the company recorded such a large overall loss this time is that the EV losses were simply too large to offset.
- 8:34Don Armstrong: It's a real shame.
- 8:36Don Armstrong: A CEO, Tashahiro Mibe, broke with Honda's long history as an internal combustion engine expert in cars, motorcycles, boats, lawnmowers, and generators, in an effort to reinvent the company as an electric motor powerhouse by 2040.
- 8:51Don Armstrong: His vision of initially achieving 40% EV sales by 2030, later revised down to 20%, is now in tatters.
- 8:59Don Armstrong: Mebey held out hope for EVs long after most of Honda's peers had shifted gears back to ICE engines.
- 9:06Don Armstrong: A sign of the broader reset, Honda quietly announced in February that it reverse an organizational change made six years ago under Mebei's predecessor, Takahiro Hashiko.
- 9:19Don Armstrong: Separated vehicle development from advanced RD.
- 9:22Don Armstrong: They've thrown that out the window.
- 9:24Don Armstrong: It's gonna go back to RD.
- 9:26Don Armstrong: Unbelievable.
- 9:28Don Armstrong: I actually owned a Honda many, many, many years ago when I was married to Lisa, and she loved that car, and it was the hot thing.
- 9:35Don Armstrong: It was the little square accord.
- 9:37Don Armstrong: Remember that back in the 80s?
- 9:38Don Armstrong: You couldn't keep them on a showroom floor.
- 9:41Don Armstrong: They sold like hot cakes.
- 9:43Don Armstrong: What a great car! Great engine.
- 9:45Don Armstrong: It was nice.
- 9:48Mike Marrs: We bought one at a 2300 cord, and we put 200,000 miles on it and gave it to one of the granddaughters, and they took off in it, you know, and it just you know did you a little bit of maintenance on it and just kept it rocking forever.
- 10:01Don Armstrong: Yeah, it's a real shame.
- 10:03Don Armstrong: What a great company gone right down the turlet.
- 10:07Don Armstrong: Yeah, well, because of these overpriced C overpriced CEOs.
- 10:13Don Armstrong: And you know, oh I got the answer to everything.
- 10:16Don Armstrong: Did you do any research on that?
- 10:18Jeff Dziekan: More money, more money.
- 10:19Don Armstrong: You know about that, David.
- 10:21Don Armstrong: That holds true in the radio business and pretty much every other business, too.
- 10:25Don Armstrong: It's really a shame.
- 10:26Jeff Dziekan: More money.
- 10:27Don Armstrong: No money.
- 10:28Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 10:28Don Armstrong: Give me the money, I'll make it right.
- 10:30Don Armstrong: Not all right.
- 10:34Don Armstrong: Well, we had to end on a down note, and uh, we're gonna talk about that in just a moment.
- 10:38Don Armstrong: We're gonna talk about the Middle East and how it's affecting the automobile business, not just gasoline, but also in parts that's coming up where the in-wheel time car talk show continues right after this quick break.

- 12:36Don Armstrong: And uh thank you for being you today.
- 12:40Don Armstrong: Okay, a couple of stories I want to get in.
- 12:43Don Armstrong: Um first of all, let's talk about the Middle East briefly.
- 12:46Don Armstrong: The escalating conflict in the Middle East has all but closed the Strait of Poor Moose.
- 12:50Don Armstrong: I think they're working on that as we speak.
- 12:58Don Armstrong: I am really proud I don't have one of those.
- 13:01Don Armstrong: I'm proud I don't have one of them.
- 13:02Jeff Dziekan: Well, he rolled in two minutes ago, he just rolled through.
- 13:06Don Armstrong: That's all right.
- 13:09Don Armstrong: Wind it out to 7,000 and watch it blow up right out there on the feeder road.
- 13:13Don Armstrong: The escalating conflict, Middle East does all but close the Strait of Hormoza Narrow.
- 13:17Don Armstrong: Waterway between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula, that is a critical shipping corridor for global trade, threatened to further increase logistics costs for automakers.
- 13:26Don Armstrong: The risks of using the strait have increased insurance costs for cargoes and ships.
- 13:31Don Armstrong: SP Global said in a report on the effects of the war on the automotive industry.
- 13:35Don Armstrong: Hormoz is a major water route for raw materials such as aluminum and petrochemical producers from around the Persian Gulf as well as oil and liquefied petroleum gas.
- 13:48Don Armstrong: That's a car.
- 13:49Don Armstrong: Iran has attacked ships and started to lay mines in the strait.
- 13:53Don Armstrong: Ships seeking to enter the strait are also taking alternate routes, increasing transit time, or preventing cargo from reaching its intended destination.
- 14:01Don Armstrong: Comes on top of the higher energy prices we're all feeling right now.
- 14:05Don Armstrong: Cost of rent crude, for example, now above$100.
- 14:08Don Armstrong: Logistics costs have risen 25 to 30 percent.
- 14:18Don Armstrong: Schnell said fuel clauses, price adjustments linked to fuel costs are standard in contracts, but they typically apply retroactively, creating cash flow pressure for logistics companies when fuel prices spike.
- 14:30Don Armstrong: The President has said that hopefully here very soon all is going to be well.
- 14:35Don Armstrong: Just hang tight.
- 14:36Don Armstrong: Well, we're hanging tight.
- 14:37Don Armstrong: We're waiting, but it's a mess.
- 14:39Don Armstrong: And don't forget, automakers get parts through various uh ways, whether it's uh, you know, shipping precious metals or shipping, you know, wheels or whatever the case may be.
- 14:54Don Armstrong: So that all goes to the straight of hormous.
- 14:57Don Armstrong: I don't think it will see this kind of problem in the near future once this all gets settled.
- 15:03Don Armstrong: And I mentioned this story last week, and I'm gonna mention it again because it's still an issue.
- 15:09Don Armstrong: Car edge data reveals the average vehicle is listed in dealership ads.
- 15:15Mike Marrs: I definitely like that car.
- 15:17Don Armstrong: It is least seven percent less than the actual out-the-door price, the kind of behavior the Federal Trade Commission just called illegal.
- 15:26Don Armstrong: Almost all dealerships omit document fees from their listing prices, which compensates them for processing paperwork.
- 15:33Don Armstrong: Also, about half of the stores charge for add-ons the consumer likely wasn't expecting.
- 15:39Don Armstrong: Car ed statistics spanning thousands of auto deals show the company's business includes providing artificial intelligence to navigate vehicle purchases on behalf of consumers.
- 15:50Don Armstrong: On the whole, the real price of a vehicle was seven to eight percent more than the list priced priced on the dealership's website, not counting taxes and title fees.
- 16:00Don Armstrong: Those website prices also translate to radio and television ads.
- 16:05Don Armstrong: Yep.
- 16:07Don Armstrong: Nay nay, says the Federal Trade Commission.
- 16:09Don Armstrong: All of that is about to change.
- 16:12Don Armstrong: Um CarEdge wrote in a March 3rd news release announcing a new dealership transparency index that relates that rates stores on factors, including the accuracy of their listing prices.
- 16:24Don Armstrong: When you go to buy a new car, don't let them screw you over.
- 16:29Don Armstrong: Oh, well, we put some undercoating on there.
- 16:33Jeff Dziekan: It's always that, always something.
- 16:34Jeff Dziekan: Yep.
- 16:35Jeff Dziekan: Or the document views.
- 16:37Don Armstrong: Well, what about the tax title and license?
- 16:39Don Armstrong: Nay, nay.
- 16:40Don Armstrong: Or etching on all your parts.
- 16:41Don Armstrong: It's all got to be on there.
- 16:43Don Armstrong: I don't like that when car companies, dealerships do that.
- 16:47Mike Marrs: You go into Walmart and you buy something, it's X number of dollars plus tax.
- 16:51Don Armstrong: Right.
- 16:51Mike Marrs: Well, I want to go buy a car the same way.
- 16:53Mike Marrs: It's X number of dollars plus tax.
- 16:55Jeff Dziekan: God, that's a beautiful car.
- 16:57Mike Marrs: Yeah, butternut yellow big tub.
- 16:59Don Armstrong: That is a Chevet, uh Chevy 2.
- 17:04Don Armstrong: Not a Nova yet, a Chevy 2.67.
- 17:07Don Armstrong: Well, that was beautiful.
- 17:08Don Armstrong: Butternut yellow with a black interior.
- 17:11Don Armstrong: Oh, that car is right there.
- 17:16Jeff Dziekan: Well, it's the bomb.
- 17:19Don Armstrong: It is the bomb.
- 17:20Don Armstrong: Did you hear that?
- 17:20Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 17:20Don Armstrong: It's all mufflered up, but boy, those headers have come shining through with that little acceleration camp.
- 17:26Don Armstrong: It's got a what?
- 17:27Jeff Dziekan: A softer cam in it, it seems like.
- 17:29Don Armstrong: It's just real nice.
- 17:31Don Armstrong: I like it a lot.
- 17:32Don Armstrong: Street car.
- 17:32Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 17:33Mike Marrs: There goes the Chevelle.
- 17:36Don Armstrong: There he goes.
- 17:37Don Armstrong: You can barely see him.
- 17:39Mike Marrs: Can you see that steering wheel?
- 17:41Mike Marrs: He needs a phone book.
- 17:43Don Armstrong: He does need a phone book.
- 17:44Don Armstrong: So, gentlemen, what do you think of the uh tailpipes and tacos Beaumont?
- 17:48Don Armstrong: You know, I very nice.
- 17:49Don Armstrong: I really didn't know what to expect.
- 17:51Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, it was open.
- 17:52Don Armstrong: Because the freeway sucks.
- 17:53Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 17:54Don Armstrong: Did I say that?
- 17:55Don Armstrong: It sucks.
- 17:56Don Armstrong: It's pretty bad.
- 17:57Don Armstrong: It's bad.
- 17:58Jeff Dziekan: Well, it's going to be a three-hour ride home.
- 18:00Don Armstrong: You know, it's funny because we tend to forget bad freeways once they've reopened and they've fixed them all up and they're nice.
- 18:08Don Armstrong: But if you remember, I-10 the KD freeway was like that.
- 18:14Don Armstrong: All jacked up.
- 18:16Don Armstrong: For years.
- 18:18Don Armstrong: The widest freeway in America, which you include the feeder road.
- 18:23Jeff Dziekan: 40 lanes or something.
- 18:24Mike Marrs: But they didn't really take that long to do a project of that size.
- 18:28Mike Marrs: They really didn't.
- 18:29Mike Marrs: I mean, they jumped on it and got at it.
- 18:31Don Armstrong: Well, guess what?
- 18:32Don Armstrong: That's Houston.
- 18:34Jeff Dziekan: It's Beaumont.
- 18:35Jeff Dziekan: Well, there might be Beaumont over here.
- 18:37Jeff Dziekan: Some might be an environmental.
- 18:38Jeff Dziekan: There might be like a titsy fly that's invasive over here or something.
- 18:41Jeff Dziekan: Or some kind of cucaracha bug or whatever.
- 18:45Jeff Dziekan: It could be.
- 18:46Don Armstrong: Oh, well, wait a minute.
- 18:47Don Armstrong: We're gonna have to reroute the ditch.
- 18:49Don Armstrong: Because you gotta do it.
- 18:50Don Armstrong: Because you've been pouring motor oil in for seven seven years, and we're gonna have to remediate that ditch.
- 18:56Don Armstrong: No, you're not.
- 18:58Don Armstrong: Just pour some concrete over it and you'll be fine.
- 19:00Don Armstrong: Say there you go.
- 19:02Don Armstrong: I mean why?
- 19:06Don Armstrong: Don't do that.
- 19:09Don Armstrong: So it it is really frustrating and bad.
