  a little differently? Like maybe you, I don't know,

  maybe you do double points for relays looking at you Texas.

  And then we're also going to get to the bottom of is it the state

  meet or do you qualify for states?

  And so help me welcome representing the state of

  Missouri from William Chrisman High School.

  this great state for us and this fun little project.

  Excited to represent my favorite state, right, Missouri.

  And as always kind of like a little PSA to everybody.

  We're going to say we got opinions and things like that.

  So we don't crucify Kyle for anything of Missouri.

  He is just stepping up and being a leader for us in this project.

  So grateful for that. So let's start, Kyle, why don't
• 1:58
  we give a kind of a 32nd, 30,000 foot level introduction of
• 2:02
  yourself for this great state? Yeah, so I have coached in
• 2:09
  Missouri for 11 years now. I've been nine years at William
• 2:13
  Chrisman High School. I do track and field.
• 2:17
  Pole vault is my specialty in the track and field world.
• 2:21
  And then I also in the head cross country coach as well in
• 2:25
  the fall. So I get both seasons, both
• 2:29
  sides of it. I grew up in Saint Louis, so I
• 2:32
  have the high school experience in the state as well, and so
• 2:38
  I've been in Missouri high school track and field since O 7
• 2:44
  then basically. So I've been around a while,
• 2:46
  seen a couple different iterations of the state meet, so
• 2:49
  should be fun. I imagine you aren't the only
• 2:53
  pole vault coach who coaches cross country, but I am certain
• 2:56
  that that is not the most common combination that we've had that
• 3:00
  we've heard of. So that's pretty cool.
• 3:02
  I love that. That's really neat.
• 3:03
  OK, Mr. Kyle, let's start with Missouri and their state meet
• 3:07
  and how we do things there. Let's start with some states
• 3:10
  have different organizing, organizing bodies for their
• 3:13
  private schools and a separate one for their public schools.
• 3:15
  Others, more common, both public and private, compete under one
• 3:19
  organization. How we doing that in Missouri?
• 3:22
  In Missouri, we're all mixed in together.
• 3:26
  We have all sizes of private schools and and it's all mixed
• 3:31
  in with all the sizes of public schools.
• 3:33
  Perfect. So we're all going towards one
• 3:35
  state championship or more actually, 'cause we're going to
• 3:37
  find out next how many classes, how do we distribute our schools
• 3:41
  there? So there's five classes and they
• 3:45
  are numbered. There's not.
• 3:46
  It's not like letter. I know some states are lettered,
• 3:48
  but class one is the smallest up to class 5.
• 3:52
  Five is your biggest schools. So some states call it, you know
• 3:58
  1A2A, we're just class one, Class 2 and class one is our
• 4:02
  small and we go all the way up to five, which is our larger
• 4:04
  schools by enrollment I assume. Yeah, that's right.
• 4:08
  I don't know how else you. I don't know how you would do
• 4:10
  that. Just random maybe.
• 4:11
  I don't know. That might not be too fun.
• 4:13
  So we've got five classes. So that means we have 5 boys
• 4:18
  teams that are earning A state championship title and five
• 4:21
  girls teams that are winning a state championship title.
• 4:24
  Perfect. All right, well, let's talk
• 4:26
  about how they actually get about that.
• 4:28
  What is the first round? All across the country, it's
• 4:31
  called area divisional Sectionals.
• 4:33
  Regionals. It has so many names.
• 4:35
  What's our first round in Missouri called?
• 4:37
  So round one is your district meet.
• 4:41
  And so we call it districts or your district meet and there are
• 4:47
  in each class, there are 8 districts sectioned out by
• 4:54
  geography. It's just wherever they try and
• 4:56
  sort them as as short of a drive as you can get that Saturday
• 5:01
  morning. So I've got questions about
• 5:03
  district, but before I ask them, what is the next round after
• 5:06
  districts? The next round is called
• 5:08
  Sectionals. OK, perfect.
• 5:09
  OK, stay there. Got it.
• 5:11
  I wanted to know where we're going there.
• 5:13
  So in districts, how do I enter my kids?
• 5:17
  Do they have to have a qualifying time?
• 5:19
  Is it AI? Hate to say it, all comers, but
• 5:21
  I can enter so many per event. But how do I actually enter my
• 5:24
  kids into district? So in general you get two event
• 5:32
  or two athletes per event. So I can enter two boys in the
• 5:36
  102, boys in the 200 through all.
• 5:40
  Of the events and and that has a little asterisk by it in the
• 5:45
  sense that if you meet a particular qualifying standard,
• 5:52
  you can enter more kids in those events in districts and so if
• 5:58
  you're. From a really successful program
• 6:01
  that does happen sometimes and there's standards for every
• 6:05
  event and I believe they are based on the average of what 8th
• 6:10
  place would be over the last three years at the state meet.
• 6:14
  And so that I guess they assume if you're good enough to score
• 6:17
  at state, you should be allowed to be entered.
• 6:20
  Into the district meet at the very least.
• 6:22
  That's a cool way. I like that 8th place at state.
• 6:24
  It's like OK, that's you know, typically earns Allstate and
• 6:26
  earns points. Well, you should be able to at
• 6:27
  least get into the pool, the districts and sectionals and
• 6:30
  we'll find out what else after that.
• 6:32
  So if I have a teen that is real strong in the mile and I have
• 6:36
  you know eight kids that all break four O 5 in the mile, I'm
• 6:39
  assuming four O 5 gets 8th in Missouri.
• 6:42
  Might not actually, but I know in some states it doesn't.
• 6:45
  But but that means I can enter eight kids into the mile for
• 6:48
  sure. Yeah that's that's unique.
• 6:49
  That's different as we've been learning through a different
• 6:51
  state. Some have a hard cap 2 and it
• 6:53
  doesn't matter that your third one is A4 flat as well.
• 6:56
  They better go find a two mile or half mile or relay to do so.
• 7:00
  We're going to take two athletes per event plus any more, any,
• 7:04
  pardon me, any third or more that you have on your team that
• 7:06
  meets a predetermined qualified standard for all your events.
• 7:11
  Pull ball. High jump.
• 7:12
  Yeah, and even relays too. You could enter 2 relays
• 7:16
  provided that the. 4 athletes on the B relay are different from
• 7:21
  the four on the A relay. OK, now there's you know that
• 7:26
  when you walk into a party in the record scratch, that's a
• 7:28
  record scratch right there. Hold on.
• 7:29
  Now you're saying we're going to use William Chrisman as an
• 7:32
  example? You've got 2 four by one teams,
• 7:35
  8 completely different kids, 4 on your call it A and four on
• 7:38
  your B, and they run. I just like making up fun times.
• 7:40
  They run 40 flat in the four by one and the B team runs 40.5 and
• 7:45
  the predetermined 8th place last year is 41, you know, probably
• 7:48
  42. You can qualify both.
• 7:50
  OK, I I kind of generally like that.
• 7:53
  But what happens if both relay team?
• 7:55
  You can't. You're not telling me we're
• 7:58
  going to Fast forward. They both qualify for the state
• 8:00
  meet. You can score both relays at the
• 8:01
  state meet. No.
• 8:03
  And so, yeah. And so as I'm saying that, I'm
• 8:05
  looking it up. Last year they didn't put out
• 8:09
  times for that so maybe they took that away from us.
• 8:13
  But in the past I think it has been a thing.
• 8:15
  So, but yeah, if it's with any event, if you qualified all four
• 8:21
  and and the four kept rolling through, they score it.
• 8:23
  Stay OK, yeah, yeah. For the individual events, yeah,
• 8:26
  the relay one is the one that got me a little.
• 8:27
  Yeah, sorry. OK, so I double checked myself
• 8:30
  there. I'm not.

  Yeah. Sure, on the relays anymore, but
• 8:32
  which I know, you know, it's funny.

  It's just a little side note here.

  This is kind of not to do with the state meet, but for any
• 8:38
  state meet, why couldn't you do 2, two or more relay teams if
• 8:42
  they beat the? How is that any different from 2
• 8:45
  athletes or 4 athletes? You know what I'm saying?
• 8:47
  Like that's. Yeah.
• 8:48
  If you've got the depth that you've got the depth.
• 8:50
  Yeah, I don't know that's, I haven't thought about that.
• 8:52
  I might have to put a think piece out on that one.

  That's that's interesting. OK, districts, 2 athletes per
• 8:58
  event, plus any of your team that maybe has beaten A
• 9:01
  predetermined qualified standard go to district.
• 9:03
  How do I go from District to sectionals?
• 9:07
  Yeah. So in districts, and I'll just,
• 9:12
  I have the most experience with the biggest class where we're in
• 9:15
  Class 5, it's typically 11:50 schools per district for us.
• 9:21
  Some of the smaller schools have up to like 20 schools.
• 9:25
  For the smaller classes, but so that's going to give you 20 to
• 9:29
  24 kids in the district meet for for the more common events, you
• 9:34
  know, for the 100, there's going to be 24 kids, right?
• 9:38
  And so to move on to the next round you have to get 4th place,
• 9:43
  top four, move on. No matter the time, No matter.
• 9:47
  Anything else? It's it's the top four in the
• 9:49
  finals of districts. No time qualifiers.
• 9:53
  If you're 5th and you ran 10 flat, I'm so sorry.
• 9:57
  I hope you're on a relay team. Yeah.

  Yep. Top four.

  Top four for all the events. Pole vault, High jump.

  Everything leaving at top. 4 relays top, 4 relays top. 4
• 10:06
  relays? Yep.

  OK. So our top four out of districts
• 10:10
  go on to sectionals. Correct.
• 10:12
  All right. Tell me more about sectionals.
• 10:15
  So sectionals is a combination of essentially the top 4 from 2
• 10:22
  of the districts. And so the districts, there's
• 10:26
  eight meets that go on in the state.
• 10:28
  There are 4 sectional meets that go on the state where the top
• 10:32
  four from two different districts meet.
• 10:34
  So that you only have eight kids in each sectional meet, is that
• 10:39
  right? So there's only one.
• 10:42
  When we get to sectionals, we're down to one heat of the 100
• 10:46
  everything. One heat of everything.
• 10:48
  So that must mean very little, or at least half.
• 10:53
  Go on. What was the next round state?
• 10:56
  The next round of state and the top four from sectionals go to
• 10:59
  state. Wow.
• 11:00
  Now that's interesting because that is a fairly quick cut down.
• 11:04
  So we go to districts which seems like a fairly large meet,
• 11:06
  you know 24 maybe plus in each event our top four are going to
• 11:10
  sectionals where boy you are down to one heat and you better
• 11:13
  get top four because that takes you to the state meeting and you
• 11:15
  said there are 4 sectionals that means when we get to state we're
• 11:18
  back to two rounds of the 100. That's interesting.
• 11:22
  Kind of a a contrition, but then a a go back.
• 11:26
  That's interesting. OK.
• 11:27
  And so and and similarly. And It's a weird deal from a
• 11:33
  coaching perspective, too. In Districts you have Prelims
• 11:37
  and finals. Because it's a bit bigger of a
• 11:41
  meet, Sectionals obviously is finals only, and then at the
• 11:44
  state meet you go back to prelims and finals.
• 11:47
  That is interesting. So, so and like last year we had
• 11:53
  a sprinter who open one, open 24 by 1, four by two and districts
• 12:01
  potentially ran 8 races. And you know however many you
• 12:05
  qualify for. But in sectionals you're running
• 12:09
  two races, perhaps you know or or something much smaller.
• 12:12
  And then back at the state meet you got to be ready for double
• 12:14
  everything. So that's really interesting.
• 12:17
  You know, this is another one of the reasons why we decided to go
• 12:20
  on this adventure and interview 51 coaches from around the
• 12:23
  country to talk about this is because they are so unique.
• 12:26
  That's really, that's really unique.
• 12:27
  I've never heard of where it comes down in the number of
• 12:30
  rounds and then back up. That's that's really
• 12:31
  interesting. Usually kind of cuts down
• 12:34
  because your number of athletes continue to cut down.
• 12:36
  OK, well, let's talk about this state meet.
• 12:39
  Tell us so we have five classes, Are we doing the state meet all
• 12:42
  at one venue on one weekend? Is it a two day, three day, four
• 12:45
  day meet? Is it, do you have it a college
• 12:48
  venue? Does it rotate?
• 12:50
  What are we doing for the actual venue in the State Meet itself?
• 12:53
  Sure, so the five classes do not all.
• 12:59
  Compete at the same time. So the smallest two classes,
• 13:06
  class one and class two they have, their timeline is just
• 13:11
  bumped forward a week from the bigger schools timeline.
• 13:14
  So they have districts by themselves and then the next
• 13:18
  weekend when we're having districts, they're doing
• 13:20
  sectionals and so they have their state meet one week
• 13:23
  earlier than the bigger schools do and so.
• 13:29
  At that state meet, it is at Jefferson City High School.
• 13:36
  It's geographically central for the whole state.
• 13:41
  It's a huge stadium for a high school, especially a high school
• 13:44
  in Missouri. I know there's some big stadiums
• 13:47
  in some of the southern states, but but Missouri typically
• 13:52
  doesn't have a huge. Football track stadium set up
• 13:56
  for most of their high school places but I believe Jefferson
• 14:00
  City High School can hold 4 to 6000.
• 14:05
  When it's all said and done with the events and all that in that
• 14:09
  stadium, it is that small class one and two state meet.
• 14:13
  Is that also at Jeff City? Yep, Yep, they do it the same.
• 14:17
  Exactly the same, set up just one week earlier than we do.
• 14:21
  So Jeff City's never hosting a big school sectional meet
• 14:25
  because it's the weekend of the state meet for small schools.
• 14:28
  Yeah. OK, how many days do we do these
• 14:31
  meets? The state.
• 14:31
  Oh yeah, so they are always, always, always 2 day meets.
• 14:35
  Yeah. OK so a two day meet over at
• 14:39
  Jeff City. Been there for a while at Jeff
• 14:40
  City. Yeah, the last five or six
• 14:44
  years. It used to be literally across
• 14:46
  the street at Lincoln University.
• 14:48
  Oh yeah. That's right.
• 14:50
  And and then they they moved it to the high school the last few
• 14:54
  years and we're doing 2 heats per events for the running
• 14:57
  events to get to our finals and then giving out state trophies
• 15:01
  on the last day and it's a two day meet.
• 15:03
  Yeah, exactly. All right.
• 15:06
  Any, you know, some states are adding adaptive or wheelchair
• 15:10
  races for the state meet, what do we do?
• 15:11
  We do anything like that in Missouri.
• 15:13
  Yeah, we do. And so it's cool because it's
• 15:16
  not a separate thing, it's there's the, the schedule for
• 15:20
  the adaptive events is mixed in with the the rest of the
• 15:24
  schedule. And so you've got the 128 and
• 15:31
  four, sorry 1248. As well as shot and disk do.
• 15:39
  Do they count towards the state meet or are they a separate in
• 15:41
  regards to that? They're a separate, unscored
• 15:45
  team event, I believe. I don't think they scored.
• 15:48
  Yeah it makes sense. But they they still have a a
• 15:50
  championship race in the 100 or 400 or shot put, you know
• 15:54
  someone's winning and getting first, second, third, yeah,
• 15:56
  that's really cool in front of the crowd, man.
• 15:58
  That's awesome. Great for them.

  I love that more states are doing that and it's it really is
• 16:02
  the beauty of the sport of track and field.
• 16:04
  You know tall, short, big, small, black, white, it don't
• 16:07
  matter it you can find a place to be successful in the sport of
• 16:10
  track and field. So love that for the coaches
• 16:13
  there in the state of Missouri. Thanks for doing that.

  OK so we have five classes, which means I'm trying to vary
• 16:20
  my examples. It always goes to the 100 meters
• 16:22
  is where I always go to. So let's do a different event in
• 16:24
  those five classes. In the shot put, we're going to
• 16:27
  have five different boys state individual champions, five
• 16:30
  different girl state individual champions who aren't competing
• 16:33
  against each other. They're in their own classes.
• 16:35
  Do we do? Sometimes a state will do
• 16:37
  unofficial or official meet of champions the week after We're
• 16:41
  all five or you know maybe they had more and so you know 10 go
• 16:44
  at it and we find out who the one shot put champion is or
• 16:48
  something like that. Anything like that there?
• 16:50
  We do not have anything official or really unofficial either.
• 16:57
  A few years back I would always get.
• 17:02
  Notifications in my e-mail popping up about like a Kansas
• 17:05
  City area meet of champions being in Kansas City or in the
• 17:10
  edge of Kansas and Missouri. And so for a while there was
• 17:14
  like that first summer week was a a meet where they had not.
• 17:18
  You didn't have to be a champion, but some of the top
• 17:20
  athletes from. The Missouri side and the Kansas
• 17:23
  side would meet at a little meet, but it was never anything
• 17:26
  huge or super official. Got it makes sense.
• 17:29
  All right, let's talk about your events.
• 17:31
  We're going to go kind of individually because they're not
• 17:33
  unique to you, you just do them. So we're going to make sure you
• 17:36
  don't just pass over. You're like, oh, everybody does
• 17:38
  this event and maybe you're the only ones.
• 17:40
  So we're going to assume you do the 124 and eight because every
• 17:45
  everybody so far has done those events.
• 17:46
  That's great. What do you do?
• 17:48
  Do you at 16 and 32 or you do a fifteen 3000 a mile, two mile?
• 17:52
  So what are you doing with those two?
• 17:53
  Events. We are 16 and 32, so 4 laps and
• 17:58
  eight laps, perfect. You're doing the 100 and 110
• 18:01
  hurdles. You're doing 300 hurdles. 300
• 18:04
  hurdles. Perfect.
• 18:05
  OK, in the relays, we're doing a four by one and we're doing a 4
• 18:09
  by 4 because if you're not doing a 4 by 4, because if you're
• 18:11
  going to hear me say this 50 times, by the way, if you listen
• 18:14
  51, if you listen to everybody, because I will say it every
• 18:15
  time. If you're not doing the four by
• 18:16
  four, you're not doing track and field.
• 18:17
  So we know where they're doing the four by one and four by
• 18:19
  four. Any other relays.
• 18:22
  So we have 4 by 1, four by two 4x4, and then we also run the
• 18:27
  four by eight. So the distance world gets a
• 18:31
  relay. No medleys, Just 4 by 8.
• 18:35
  You must have heard some of my other interviews, because my
• 18:37
  immediate question always is any medleys?
• 18:40
  Very good, very good. All right, let's go to the field
• 18:42
  events. We're doing long jump.
• 18:43
  Yes, we're doing triple jump. It's not, it's not everywhere.
• 18:46
  That's why I have to pause on that one.
• 18:48
  We're doing shot put and discus. We're doing well.
• 18:50
  You're the pole vault coach, so we already knew that we're doing
• 18:52
  pole vault and high jump. What other field events are we
• 18:55
  doing? So Missouri does Javelin as
• 19:00
  well. Awesome.
• 19:01
  Yeah, that's great. We're about, we're about half, I
• 19:03
  think we're around around 2526 states now that are doing it.
• 19:07
  We had some recent additions. We learned back in Idaho that
• 19:10
  Idaho had a Javelin this year. So that's really great man.

  We love hearing that. That is awesome.
• 19:15
  Anything else? Any Some states do an unofficial
• 19:20
  have Teflon, decathlon or hammer, You know, a week or two
• 19:23
  later? Anybody.
• 19:23
  Any coaches, associations, groups do anything like that?
• 19:27
  No, nothing else. Cool.

  I'd love to see a I'd love to see a steeplechase thrown in
• 19:31
  there. Yes, that would be cool.
• 19:34
  The distant side of me likes that and I I like the decathlon
• 19:38
  too. But we don't.
• 19:39
  We don't have any. We we have maybe one meet during
• 19:42
  the regular season that that runs a pentathlon, Heptathlon
• 19:48
  for the girls and boys. But it's.
• 19:51
  It's not super popular in Missouri and I wish it was a bit
• 19:54
  more. That's how it starts though.
• 19:56
  So encouraging to keep that up and and make it a big thing to
• 20:00
  where there becomes a a tradition of where like hey,
• 20:03
  after the state meet we get the best athletes around who want to
• 20:05
  give this a try and that that's how we grow those events.
• 20:07
  So that's great that you at least have some taste of it in
• 20:10
  Missouri because not every state, most states are not,
• 20:12
  don't have any taste. You want to, you want to taste,
• 20:14
  you do summer track or good luck in college or whatnot.
• 20:17
  So good. Good for you guys.

  Coaches there in Missouri. OK, Kyle, as we work towards the

  end here, help me settle a little bet here.

  A little argument at least for you and your culture and your
• 20:28
  area maybe. What do we do in Missouri?

  Do we qualify when we're talking to our kids?
• 20:33
  Are we trying to qualify for the state meet?

  Are we trying to qualify for states?

  Is it do we try to qualify for state?

  What? What are we what are we saying

  there? So.

  I've been in Missouri a long time, my whole life actually,
• 20:48
  and never ever, ever have I heard anyone say qualified for
• 20:53
  states that is, that is not a thing.
• 20:56
  So you qualify for the state meet, you go to state but but
• 21:01
  that's. That's it.
• 21:03
  There's no such thing as states. I want somebody who is going to
• 21:07
  listen to all 51 of these. Some data scientist track coach
• 21:10
  too. I want.
• 21:11
  I want to hear the stats on this because what's funny is a lot of
• 21:14
  people are saying exactly what you said is I have never.
• 21:17
  It's not a thing to say States, but yet it is because it's part
• 21:21
  of the question because I've heard it so many times that's
• 21:23
  it's just so funny to me. I love it.

  All right, Kyle, you have done a great job.

  You have earned the magic wand here.

  If I were to give you a magic wand and you could change one
• 21:32
  thing that you think would be for the betterment of Missouri
• 21:35
  State track and field, whereas the state tourney events time
• 21:38
  frame, heck, there's five classes.

  Maybe you want 15 classes. I don't know.
• 21:43
  What would you do with your magic wand for Missouri?
• 21:46
  All right, so my magic wand messes with Missouri's love of.
• 21:55
  Perfect heat. So in sectionals you get 8 kids
• 21:58
  and state you have 16. I want more deserving kids in
• 22:05
  those two meets and maybe in districts as well.
• 22:10
  I guess I don't necessarily care about that, but if you meet that
• 22:17
  magical 8th place qualification or whatever qualification they
• 22:21
  want to put out there, if you meet that.
• 22:24
  In the district meet you move on.
• 22:28
  In the sectional meet you move on.
• 22:30
  And so for example, I'm the in the pole vault world, let's say
• 22:35
  we got 7 kids at sectionals that jump 4 meters 20.
• 22:40
  They deserve to have a chance to become an all state athlete and
• 22:45
  so I would bump them long to that state meet.
• 22:49
  Then you got 21 pole vaulters instead of 16.
