- 0:09Your podcast and YouTube blog covering the German
- 0:12startup scene with news, interviews and
- 0:16live events.
- 0:20Welcome to our regular startup news from the startup and tech entrepreneurship
- 0:23scenes in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. This is the deep
- 0:27dive of our startup news with me, Chris
- 0:31in New York and Joe like
- 0:34frolicking around in Germany.
- 0:39So this is the second episode, some of you might have listened to
- 0:42the highlights and now here you will get even more
- 0:46of our monthly news coverage. We
- 0:50took a bit of a leaner approach, as
- 0:53contradictory to the Christmas season, to the holiday season, but we
- 0:57took a bit of a leaner approach in the startup news. Please let us know
- 1:00how you like it. And before we go any further, one small milestone worth
- 1:04pausing for. This is episode 730 of Startup
- 1:08Radio. The number says a lot. A lot of
- 1:11conversations, years of conversations, cycles of hype and corrections.
- 1:15I mean yeah, I'm still missing super
- 1:19fast supermarkets, thousands of founders,
- 1:23investors and operators passing through our mics,
- 1:28booms, busts, pivots, reinventions across the dark startup
- 1:31ecosystem and we're still here, still hoping
- 1:35that sometimes our signals beat the noise. So thanks for listening,
- 1:40building this brand. Thanks for challenging us and for sticking around.
- 1:43Now back to work and Back to the
- 1:47December 2025 startup news part two.
- 1:51The deep dive part one was a bit about bigger signals, headline
- 1:55moves. This now is where we slow things down a bit and we looked at
- 1:58what actually changed underneath. We are at more concrete
- 2:01deals with a couple of companies and
- 2:07you will, yeah, get the last wrap
- 2:10up before we start the new year. So I'm
- 2:14in the lead. Chris in New York. We move across the ecosystem piece by
- 2:18piece. We will look at Europe shifting, AI competitiveness
- 2:21debate. Two very concrete signals out of Germany, out of Austria, out of
- 2:25Switzerland will hear which categories we see
- 2:29are maturing, others are being repriced and
- 2:32where founders are adapting faster than the market. Consensus,
- 2:36consensus. So before
- 2:40we will get into it, you have a little bit of
- 2:43housekeeping and all the little
- 2:46minutia for us. Yeah, just a tiny note
- 2:50guys. Startup Radio experienced a brief publishing interruption
- 2:53due to software update at the third party software provider that
- 2:57did not go as planned. All content was fully backed up and
- 3:01remains intact. Delayed episodes will be released and regular
- 3:05publishing has now resumed. Fortunately.
- 3:09Quick heads up before we continue. This deep dive
- 3:13isn't about hype stories. We're talking execution signals,
- 3:17regulatory shifts and where capital is actually getting
- 3:21disciplined right now. Stay with us.
- 3:25The interesting parts are just ahead.
- 3:32Hey guys, welcome back from the ad break. I'm handing over to Chris again
- 3:35because he's always been an ecosystem guy, right? Yes.
- 3:39And this is the part of the show where we look more into
- 3:43general context of the startup world. For example, in
- 3:47Europe we found a report at
- 3:50Antifa about Europe's AI
- 3:54competitiveness and how the debate there shifts from
- 3:58ambition to execution. Antifa Outline is outlining a
- 4:02couple of scenarios for how Europe could remain competitive in the global AI
- 4:05race. They are looking at infrastructure, specialization,
- 4:08regulatory leverage and we see that for the D
- 4:12ecosystem the re relence the relevance is clear.
- 4:16The conversation has moved from whether Europe can compete at all to where
- 4:20it can win which parts of the market. And
- 4:23one idea is that that could be in particularly in applied
- 4:27regulated and industrial AI. The
- 4:30ecosystem in Germany has interesting
- 4:34details about the Google search trends 2025
- 4:39and Stan has an analysis there
- 4:42and showing where public curiosity was lying in
- 4:462025. And for founders and operators, these trends
- 4:50matter a bit more than just like the trivia and of a
- 4:53proxy for mass market sentiment, cultural anxiety and
- 4:57emerging demand. And
- 5:00when we look at it, I mean a lot of it is political I guess
- 5:05in the search trends, but
- 5:08we also see
- 5:12a lot of searches about dead
- 5:16people unfortunately. So probably, yeah, so probably
- 5:19a bit less about the start startup world, but a bit more about
- 5:23what actually Germans were cur about.
- 5:27The German Fintech ecosystem has
- 5:31been the topic of a Tech Funding News article
- 5:35that analyzes the ecosystem reaching
- 5:38651 million euros in funding, highlighting also a
- 5:42shift from explosive growth to some kind of operational
- 5:46maturity. So we also see here that Fintech
- 5:50is becoming more of an execution game, centering on
- 5:53margins, centering on compliance, centering on scale economics and a
- 5:57bit less the rapid growth stories of the past.
- 6:01And Tech Funding News also reports that 2026 is shaping
- 6:05up as a pivotal year for German accounting software, driven by
- 6:08AI adoption and mandatory E invoicing. That means
- 6:12for software as a service founders. In the Dach region,
- 6:16regulation is once again acting as a forced innovation catalyst.
- 6:19And bit less of a drag hopefully for
- 6:23you guys. Moving on from Germany to Austria and moving on from
- 6:27Christian to Joe. Yes, there's a new
- 6:31electricity law in Austria. Wind and solar sectors
- 6:34celebrate a regulatory win. The renewables industry
- 6:38are positioned as beneficiary of the new
- 6:41electricity market framework. Which market which matters? Because
- 6:45climate startups don't scale on tech alone, they scale on the
- 6:49market design. For daft founders, this is a reminder that regulatory
- 6:53structure can be growth level. However, not only constrained,
- 6:57we accelerate Arson attack raises concerns about
- 7:01ecosystem security trending topic reports on a
- 7:05confirmed arson attack at Vienna's We Accelerate
- 7:08Startup Hub While no funding or product implications were
- 7:12reported, incidents Highlights Growing A growing
- 7:16uncomfortable reality Physical security and
- 7:19political polarization are becoming non trivial
- 7:23risk factors even in innovation spaces. In
- 7:27Switzerland for 30 under 30 highlights Swiss
- 7:30startup Talent the coverage spotlights a new cohort
- 7:34of Swiss innovators reinforcing Switzerland's steady reputation
- 7:38for producing globally competitive founders across deep tech,
- 7:41fintech and life science. Let's go a little bit
- 7:45into the general news, VCs, news and new funds just in case
- 7:49you're looking for money. Hero Capital launches its
- 7:53third European scale up Fund Hero Capital announced The launch of
- 7:56Hero 3 spelled H I
- 8:00R O a new European focus scale Up Fund while
- 8:03adding Sir Nick Clack as general partner.
- 8:07Forbes published its Midas Europe list spotlighting capital
- 8:11concentration. Forbes released its annual list for Europe
- 8:15highlighting the venture capitalists currently exerting the most
- 8:19influence across the European startup ecosystem. For startup
- 8:22founders, the list is less about prestige and more about
- 8:26pattern recognition. Capital networks and follow on power
- 8:30are becoming increasingly concentrated among a smaller and
- 8:33smaller group of repeat actors. The
- 8:37Deep Tech News Chris, you want to flux it in.
- 8:41Because Flux 2 was presented as a new image generation
- 8:45model reinforcing that European AI progress
- 8:49is increasingly becoming more about shipping
- 8:52as productized systems. And for founders this is
- 8:56also so like an execution signal. You can say we see that
- 9:00distribution and integration layers are now
- 9:03where winners separate themselves from
- 9:07labs. Aleph Alpha Co. We've talked about
- 9:10a couple of times here too is part of a coverage of Handel's
- 9:14Blood handle. Blood is framing an inflection point at
- 9:18Aleph Alpha and reminder that sovereign AI in Europe is now in the
- 9:21hard phase. Product procurement cycles and
- 9:25durable economics are the main topics there and
- 9:29the founders here. The takeaway is that AI credibility more
- 9:33comes from actual delivery of operational systems and
- 9:36not just from positioning as
- 9:40exemplified by Aleph Alpha in that
- 9:44report in the Defense Tech News.
- 9:48Well we can only say keep in mind that we had the top news with
- 9:51Quantum Systems and their dual use potential 3 billion
- 9:56valuation and
- 9:59so more about that in the upcoming
- 10:03episodes. I think we also have nothing big
- 10:07about the biotech news for
- 10:10for now there will be more in funding and the mergers and acquisition sections of
- 10:14the show. So we will move on to fintech with you.
- 10:18Yes Mundu the Fintech News Mondo secures
- 10:21100 million debt facility by JP Morgan
- 10:25payments this is a maturity signal. Non
- 10:29dilutive capital is back for fintechs that look like
- 10:32infrastructure not experiments for Berlin and the dark fintech
- 10:35scene. This is about unit Economics and credit worthiness.
- 10:39Exactly the start of signal late stage partners
- 10:43care about We Fox we talked about the former
- 10:46unicorn. Quite frequently profit profitability
- 10:50becomes the headline handels. But reports we Fox, aiming to be
- 10:54profitable this year. So 2025 I would
- 10:58assume an inflection that matters because Insuretech has been a
- 11:01graveyard of growth first stories for dark founders. This
- 11:05is a category wide signal. Sorry it's late
- 11:09Here distribution models are being judged on
- 11:13underwriting quality and operational discipline, not
- 11:16funding optics. Bitpanda
- 11:20expands into Asia Pacific bitpanda's
- 11:23APEC expansion signals a crypto platform moving from
- 11:26regional dominance into international positioning for
- 11:30Austria and the Dach crypto ecosystem. It's a clean marker
- 11:34of compliance area crypto scaling where distribution follows
- 11:37licenses and institutional trust. We don't have
- 11:41expert green tech news here, but Chris had a lot of
- 11:45general news, right? Yeah. Let's move on to the general news. And
- 11:48to move about a former guest of ours. Swiss Pod
- 11:53Hits a Hyperloop Speed Record Moneycap
- 11:57here reports that Swisspod is breaking the hyperloop
- 12:00speed record on a major US test track for Switzerland
- 12:04and Dark Deep Tech. It's a credibility milestone. We with
- 12:08the hardware ventures only get funded long term if they can keep
- 12:11converting ambition into performance. And that is something we see here.
- 12:16Next topic. Interesting. If they would not be already
- 12:19listed and would still be considered a startup, this would have made the
- 12:23number one topic of our news overall because we're talking about
- 12:27Auto Eins Auto 1. They are expanding
- 12:31the inventory funding to 1.6 billion euros,
- 12:34underlining the capital intensity behind Europe's largest
- 12:39used car marketplace. All of this
- 12:43also kind of a reminder that the marketplace scale is ultimately a
- 12:47balance sheet story, not just a growth one. We see that
- 12:50here and we see that access to structured financing can also
- 12:54be a bit of a competitive moat.
- 12:58Manager magazine reports a sharp directional signal in
- 13:02Germany's EV market. BYD
- 13:05is gaining while Tesla loses momentum.
- 13:09So we see that the competitive advantage here is increasingly
- 13:13about manufacturing cadence, coming up with pricing, strategy,
- 13:16distribution and in the end also winning market share as
- 13:20BYD does. And we also see, yeah, that
- 13:24the brand brand narrative of Tesla has become a rather
- 13:29toxic one. Let's say Flixbus
- 13:33company in Munich that by now also already owns the famous
- 13:36Greyhound buses or Greyhound Greyhound bus brand in the US
- 13:41is pushing expansion into Australia.
- 13:45That's a report by Munich Startup that shows that platform
- 13:48economics and international replication actually can be a
- 13:52thing. And we also see it's kind of a
- 13:55disciplined global rollout and not just like okay Here's a new market
- 13:59and a hyped up story. Flix Train
- 14:03is a part of coverage of Fund scene
- 14:08who or which reports that Flix Train is positioning themselves
- 14:12around around a high frequency network
- 14:15signaling escalating competitive pressure in German
- 14:19rail. Also regulatory and Capex
- 14:22Chessboard story here where we see that
- 14:26strategy, your own strategy is always kind of constrained by
- 14:29network access and political economics as is
- 14:33part of the German rail system and regulatory
- 14:36systems. And Hunderth Blood is reporting that Amazon
- 14:40has inaugurated a new German headquarter while expanding their local
- 14:44footprint. Even though there is increasing
- 14:47regulatory scrutiny and political debate around the
- 14:51e commerce giant or website giant or Amazon
- 14:55AWS giant, Germany still remains a core
- 14:59operational market for global tech giants like Amazon
- 15:03and the country is reinforcing its role as a
- 15:06logistics, talent and enterprise hub within Europe. More details about that
- 15:10at Handels but and now we are talking about creative. Destruction,
- 15:15yes good or shrimpetter we do have
- 15:18insolvency, layoffs and other bad news. Not all companies here
- 15:22are leaving the market. Starting with Flink, they
- 15:26reportedly according to Vivo Virtual, they report
- 15:29Flink the quick delivery is requiring close to 90 million
- 15:33euros. Another data point in the
- 15:36post hype normalization of quick commerce. For Berlin,
- 15:40it's less about delivery and more about whether last mile
- 15:43economics can be financed under sober terms.
- 15:47Zushi bikes insolvency D2C reality check
- 15:51reporting frames Sushi Bikes as
- 15:54insolvent, another reminder that consumer hardware brands live
- 15:58and die by working capital. German startups Insolvency
- 16:01highlights the fragility between showcase growth
- 16:05stories. MSN reports on the solvency of
- 16:09Dusseldorf based flagship startup, a case
- 16:12that surprised many observers. For Dach ecosystem, this
- 16:16means this serves a reminder that visibility and narrative
- 16:20momentum do not replace financial
- 16:23resilience, especially in a market that has turned decisively
- 16:27towards fundamentals and selects cuts. Staff
- 16:31aggregator Unwind continues.
- 16:34Huntersblatt reports Seller X halving its
- 16:37workforce aligning with broader aggregator correction that's been
- 16:41unfolding since Cheap Capital ended. Chris,
- 16:45you want to do some fundings above 90 million
- 16:48euros US dollars? Answer with frankly yes, that's
- 16:52my minimum requirement obviously.
- 16:56Transcript reports Immatics placing
- 17:00$125ameaningful scale signal and
- 17:04biotech financing. This is the kind of
- 17:07transaction for dark life sciences that keeps pipelines alive. We
- 17:11can definitely say here and
- 17:15more about that is in the show notes. As is the case with all of
- 17:19our stories, you can always find additional articles or the in
- 17:22depth coverage from one of our colleague or from
- 17:26one of our competitor competitors websites.
- 17:29Lime home raised 75 million euros to exc
- 17:33accelerate the expansion of its tech enabled hospitality
- 17:37platform, combining real estate operations with standardized
- 17:41digital processes.
- 17:44Mirelo closed an unusually large 41 million
- 17:48dollar seed round backed by Index Ventures and
- 17:51A16Z, positioning itself in the fast
- 17:55moving intersection of generative video
- 17:58and audio. So we also see
- 18:02here that investors are willing to fund AI
- 18:06creation platforms at scale, even at very early stages.
- 18:10Let's see if the name of the next startup makes
- 18:14our audience smile. Disco
- 18:16Pharmaceuticals
- 18:20Fin SME is reporting about the fact that
- 18:24the company, obviously with our favorite name of the year,
- 18:28is closing a 36 million euro seed round.
- 18:33It's a company that works in biotech and
- 18:36showing that seed money here can still be pretty large. 36
- 18:41million euros proving it
- 18:44lifi leafy li fi
- 18:49is raising $29 million
- 18:52reinforcing the infrastructure built out in crypto,
- 18:55especially routing and liquidity layers that are
- 18:59sitting beneath consumer brands.
- 19:03Fin SME is also reporting that Asaya
- 19:06Assaia is closing a 26
- 19:10million euro Series B rounding round. They are
- 19:13using that money to scale their AI platform for airport and
- 19:17airline operations, focusing on turnaround efficiency and emission
- 19:22reduction. Corinthis
- 19:26raised an additional $25 million, reinforcing the
- 19:30pattern that industrial AI with measurable efficiency
- 19:33gains continues to attract repeat capital even
- 19:37as broader AI narratives probably might cool.
- 19:41Gravis robotics closed a 23 million dollar funding
- 19:45round to scale its autonomous robotics platform
- 19:49beyond their home markets. So here we also see that there
- 19:53the investor appetite is still continuing for
- 19:56applied robotics with a clear use in
- 19:59industrial spaces.
- 20:03Spryker is securing additional funding, reinforcing
- 20:07their investor belief or reinforcing investor belief in
- 20:11modular B2B commerce infrastructure.
- 20:14Even though we sometimes see that consumer e commerce is a bit
- 20:18cooling, but the signal here
- 20:22enterprise grade platforms with deep integrations are still
- 20:26able to attract capital.
- 20:30Hamburg Startups reports that four people's return from
- 20:34insolvency into the holiday period
- 20:38is showing an execution heavy story in a month dominated by
- 20:41mega rounds. We see here that resilience isn't
- 20:45branding but restructuring under pressure and re entering the market
- 20:48with tighter economics. More about this at Hamburg
- 20:52Startups and now talking about companies that go together M and
- 20:56A News. Yes,

- 21:21Technologies Corporation with Blick Fed set to become a
- 21:24Senstar subsidiary while continuing to
- 21:28operate under its existing name and leadership a move
- 21:31expected to close in early 2026. The combination
- 21:35brings high precision 3D lidar sensors, notably
- 21:39the QB Protect platform, into Senstar's
- 21:42broader parameter security and situational
- 21:46awareness ecosystem, expanding its addressable market
- 21:49across security, industrial automation, transport and
- 21:52infrastructure application and enhancing global go
- 21:56to market reach. The deal underscores how advanced sensor
- 22:00integration and real time 3D perception are
- 22:03strategic differentiators in physical security and
- 22:07industrial AI stacks at scale. Chris,
- 22:12that. That was, that was quite a bit. We are almost done for the month.
- 22:15I just have one question. How is New York between
- 22:19Christmas and New Year's Eve? Any traditions you brought forth
- 22:23with you from Germany? Yeah, I will. Yeah. Well
- 22:27my tradition is to mind my own business.
- 22:35So yeah, I will stay home
- 22:38a lot. I will watch silly shows and that's probably it.
- 22:42The only thing I'm going to do is probably go to the gym and then
- 22:45the rest of the time I will hibernate under a blanket. It
- 22:49maybe. Yeah, hibernation. How about you?
- 22:53I mean, I guess it's very different with two kids, right? Oh
- 22:56yeah, it's. It's different. You don't get time off, you don't get anything.
- 23:00You're basically, you're very happy. When the holidays are over
- 23:04you can send them back to kindergarten and school.
- 23:08Nice. I know I'm speaking for all the, all the parents here.
- 23:12So this is it for our today's show, right? Yeah, this is for the year
- 23:162025. Thank you very much. Looking forward
- 23:19to see and hear you guys next year again. Thank
- 23:23you. Bye bye. Bye.
