0:03
Speaker 1: Hello, guys, welcome back to normally. The show with normal
0:07
Speaker 1: is takes too when the news gets weird. I am
0:09
Speaker 1: Mary Katherine Ham.
0:10
Speaker 2: And I am Carol Marcowitz him Mary Catherine, how are
0:13
Speaker 2: you you know?
0:14
Speaker 1: I'm all right. I'm trying to recover before Christmas. I've
0:17
Speaker 1: got time. I got a little bit still.
0:18
Speaker 2: It sounds very sexy, So the audience is getting an
0:22
Speaker 2: additional treat on this lovely Thursday.
0:25
Speaker 1: That's what I'm going for. If only it were painless,
0:28
Speaker 1: I'd be for it permanently. But here we are.
0:32
Speaker 2: Well, we hope you feel better soon, even if you
0:34
Speaker 2: know that means we lose the Kathleen Turner thing.
0:39
Speaker 1: So let's get to the news, shall we, Carol it.
0:42
Speaker 1: I was sort of surprised by this one every year PolitiFact,
0:48
Speaker 1: which is an alleged fact checking organization which is very
0:55
Speaker 1: left leaning and very obviously so in the targets it
0:58
Speaker 1: chooses to fact check and the way that it fact
1:01
Speaker 1: checks things. It announced a lie of the year, as
1:05
Speaker 1: it always does, and wouldn't you know it, it's not
1:09
Speaker 1: like the president is incapacitated and we lied to you
1:13
Speaker 1: about it and he remains incapacitated and can't do his job.
1:17
Speaker 1: It's not that one. The one that it is is
1:21
Speaker 1: the one where Donald Trump said that people were eating
1:25
Speaker 1: dogs and cats eating the Dartenfield, Ohio. That's the lie
1:31
Speaker 1: of the year. Everyone. He amplified, they say before sixty
1:36
Speaker 1: seven million television viewers. And his debate against Democratic presidential
1:39
Speaker 1: nominee Vice President Kamala Harris, who was i'll put in
1:43
Speaker 1: parentheses covering up the fact that the current president was incapacitated.
1:48
Speaker 1: Trump took his anti migrant, the US borders out of
1:51
Speaker 1: control campaign agenda to a new level.
1:54
Speaker 2: Yeah, that level is to the presidency. He took that
1:58
Speaker 2: level to the presidency. Friends, what's so interesting about that?
2:02
Speaker 2: And we've mentioned this on the show before, but this
2:04
Speaker 2: kind of stuff only hurts Democrats. They think that they're helping,
2:09
Speaker 2: but they're actually hurting. So this ongoing lie that Joe
2:13
Speaker 2: Biden was just fine and that they thought they were
2:16
Speaker 2: doing a good thing for Joe Biden and for Democrats.
2:20
Speaker 2: They thought covering up this very obvious thing that was
2:23
Speaker 2: happening was going to be a positive, and it ended
2:25
Speaker 2: up being a giant negative. And I think some people
2:29
Speaker 2: are facing that reality now and other people clearly are not,
2:33
Speaker 2: but it's just it's backfiring on them, and yet they
2:37
Speaker 2: can't stop doing it.
2:39
Speaker 1: Well. And the other side of the coin too, is
2:41
Speaker 1: that Trump, although he should be more careful about the
2:45
Speaker 1: specific anecdotes he tells, he was speaking to real problems
2:50
Speaker 1: that real people have in communities that have been overrun
2:53
Speaker 1: by undocumented immigrants, and Democrats couldn't allow themselves to speak
2:57
Speaker 1: to those issues for fear of being politifacted Lie of
3:02
Speaker 1: the Year yet fodder, Right, it's because you can't tell
3:06
Speaker 1: people anything along these lines, including what Jade Vance brought up,
3:09
Speaker 1: the actual overtaking of apartment complexes in a rwer Colorado,
3:12
Speaker 1: which continues, by the way, there was a kidnapping this
3:15
Speaker 1: week there by a Venezuelan gang. You're sort of like
3:19
Speaker 1: just not allowed to make reference to those things, right,
3:22
Speaker 1: and that we.
3:23
Speaker 2: Tend to help Democrats either, Yeah, well, that's that's really it.
3:26
Speaker 2: You have to keep pretending that it's not happening because
3:30
Speaker 2: you don't have kind of the right messaging on it.
3:32
Speaker 2: What are you going to do say it is happening,
3:34
Speaker 2: but we have no interest in stopping the flow at
3:36
Speaker 2: the border. Kind of can't go both ways, and so
3:40
Speaker 2: they keep running into this problem, right, They keep running
3:42
Speaker 2: into this issue where their ideas are deeply unpopular. So
3:47
Speaker 2: what they do is they point to Republicans and say, yeah,
3:50
Speaker 2: our ideas are unpopular, but their.
3:52
Speaker 1: Ideas are racist.
3:53
Speaker 2: And it's like nobody's falling for that anymore. Nobody cares,
3:56
Speaker 2: and it's just it's not a thing anymore.
3:58
Speaker 1: Having watched Democrats are argue amongst themselves and cancel all
4:01
Speaker 1: the rest of us for so many years other it's
4:04
Speaker 1: as you know, as a right leaning person, it's so
4:07
Speaker 1: fun to like, I come pre canceled, so I don't
4:10
Speaker 1: worry as much about what I say. But watching them
4:13
Speaker 1: do that, I do think they have lost the plot
4:16
Speaker 1: when it comes to how to discuss things, because the
4:20
Speaker 1: very successful tactic was just bully people until they shut up.
4:24
Speaker 1: But they found that in twenty sixteen that forcing people
4:28
Speaker 1: to shut up is not the same as convincing them
4:31
Speaker 1: about your bulliefs, right, And so they've found out yet
4:35
Speaker 1: again in the same jarring way when the American people
4:40
Speaker 1: like Donald Trump, that they hadn't convinced people. But I'm
4:43
Speaker 1: not sure they know how to do that.
4:45
Speaker 2: Yeah, I think they're going through a series now where
4:48
Speaker 2: They're angry about what happened with Joe Biden and the
4:52
Speaker 2: whole lie that he was fine, but they kind of
4:54
Speaker 2: don't have anybody to blame.
4:56
Speaker 1: Let's roll the clip from Pod Saves America.
4:59
Speaker 3: There was a couple of White officials that went on
5:01
Speaker 3: background to political for the story, and some Biden aids
5:05
Speaker 3: acknowledged the president's absent from the broader discussions about how
5:08
Speaker 3: to address Trump's coming presidency in the future of the party.
5:10
Speaker 3: They say that they say it's rooted in two factors.
5:13
Speaker 3: One Biden's own recognition that few are eager to hear
5:16
Speaker 3: from him, and his own lingering personal belief that he
5:19
Speaker 3: doesn't owe much more to a party that unceremoniously pushed
5:22
Speaker 3: him aside. And then another White House official former White
5:25
Speaker 3: House official said he's been so cavalier and selfish about
5:28
Speaker 3: how he approaches the final weeks of the job, which
5:30
Speaker 3: was aliging for a former White House official. I mean, like,
5:33
Speaker 3: I get the recognition that maybe people aren't willing to
5:37
Speaker 3: hear from him. Is understandable that he might think that
5:39
Speaker 3: right the party thing I hope is not true, because
5:43
Speaker 3: I don't know what do you guys think he could.
5:44
Speaker 1: Be doing quiet quitting.
5:46
Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that's what we're getting, or.
5:48
Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what that seems to me what he is doing.
5:50
Speaker 1: Yeah, oh instead, yes, got it.
5:52
Speaker 3: You know, but instead of just complaining that he's not
5:54
Speaker 3: out there, I'm wondering what we think, right.
5:56
Speaker 4: I'm trying to like separate my like frustration with base
6:00
Speaker 4: lead Joe Biden in his final year and culminating that
6:03
Speaker 4: debate and hanging on that like how much we paid
6:06
Speaker 4: for having somebody who just wasn't an articulate and comprehensible messenger,
6:09
Speaker 4: not just on behalf of his own presidency, but on
6:11
Speaker 4: behalf of like progressivism democracy, right. And I am very
6:15
Speaker 4: angry about that, And I'm a little bit mad at
6:17
Speaker 4: myself for not being more honest about how I felt
6:19
Speaker 4: or not seeing it as plainly because I think we're
6:22
Speaker 4: obviously paying dearly for it.
6:24
Speaker 1: I guess what I'm more concerned about.
6:25
Speaker 4: Is less like, am I seeing Joe Biden enough? Maybe
6:28
Speaker 4: he's right that people don't want to hear from him.
6:29
Speaker 4: It's more like, do I feel confident right now that
6:31
Speaker 4: Joe Biden behind the scenes is thinking of every single
6:34
Speaker 4: way he can try to future proof the White House?
6:37
Speaker 4: That he's thinking through all the different levers of powers
6:40
Speaker 4: that kind of creative ways in which he can do
6:42
Speaker 4: everything to protect everyone from like undocumented DOCTA recipients to
6:47
Speaker 4: trans people to the benefits of the inflation reduction. I
6:51
Speaker 4: think there are very smart people thinking about that, and
6:53
Speaker 4: I hope they succeed. And it sounds like from that
6:55
Speaker 4: memo the White House but out that they are thinking
6:57
Speaker 4: about the best ways to do that. But do I
6:58
Speaker 4: think Joe Biden himself is like a command being thinking
7:02
Speaker 4: about this, like right now, don't I just honestly don't.
7:05
Speaker 3: Maybe he is.
7:06
Speaker 1: You can't tell, we can't tell.
7:07
Speaker 2: Yeah, So we'll talk about the future proof in the
7:10
Speaker 2: next segment, because that's also kind of a big deal
7:13
Speaker 2: that all these people are saying, like, hey, Joe Biden
7:15
Speaker 2: has to be doing stuff to stop Donald Trump, who
7:17
Speaker 2: just got elected by the American people, from implementing the
7:20
Speaker 2: agenda that the American people elected him to implement. We'll
7:23
Speaker 2: get into that in a second. But the admission, the
7:26
Speaker 2: admission that perhaps maybe we didn't see Biden for who
7:33
Speaker 2: he was. Eric Erickson points out today on his show
7:36
Speaker 2: or yesterday on his show that the fundraiser in California
7:39
Speaker 2: where Joe Biden had to be led away off stage
7:43
Speaker 2: with a you know, Obama holding onto his back, The
7:46
Speaker 2: one where George Clooney eventually had to say that Biden
7:50
Speaker 2: had to go because of what he saw that night.
7:52
Speaker 2: Erickson points out that these guys, these Pod Saves America
7:56
Speaker 2: guys defended Joe Biden at the time they covered him,
8:00
Speaker 2: and now they're mad about it.
8:02
Speaker 1: Well, the thing is, it wasn't a secret, right, We
8:05
Speaker 1: could all see it. This is what made it. I
8:07
Speaker 1: think it compounded their problem because people continued to not
8:12
Speaker 1: believe the Democratic Party because Democratic Party was telling them
8:14
Speaker 1: something that was very obviously untrue on its face. In
8:18
Speaker 1: February of twenty twenty four, there was a poll with
8:22
Speaker 1: like eighty six percent of Americans think that Biden is
8:25
Speaker 1: too old to be serving another four years as president.
8:29
Speaker 1: So in February twenty twenty four, eighty six percent of
8:32
Speaker 1: the American people could see this. And you're telling me
8:35
Speaker 1: that Pods of America guys who have interaction with people
8:39
Speaker 1: close to the president couldn't see it. Number one, Yeah,
8:42
Speaker 1: we shouldn't be listening to you for advice, right. Number two,
8:45
Speaker 1: By the way, this isn't even uh, the oldest poll
8:49
Speaker 1: that shows this, There was plenty before that too.
8:51
Speaker 2: I think that that's absolutely right. What it is is
8:55
Speaker 2: either they were blind to it or they're lying. And
8:59
Speaker 2: either way you have to kind of look at that
9:01
Speaker 2: and be like, well, why are we.
9:03
Speaker 1: Listening to you now?
9:05
Speaker 2: And again, you know, they're Obama kind of staffers who
9:09
Speaker 2: now have a podcast. They're clearly on the left there,
9:13
Speaker 2: but they're very popular on the left and they're very
9:15
Speaker 2: listened to, and they're very respected, and I think that
9:19
Speaker 2: that's kind of funny that they lie to their audience
9:23
Speaker 2: and they lied to their own side, and that they
9:25
Speaker 2: continue to either lie or you know, not admit that
9:28
Speaker 2: they didn't see something I other than the small admission
9:31
Speaker 2: that they made here.
9:33
Speaker 1: Well, and the crazy thing is, I think they're like
9:36
Speaker 1: better than a lot of the party leadership and talking
9:38
Speaker 1: about these things. They've been more willing to say it
9:42
Speaker 1: than others, which tells you how far behind the others are. Again,
9:45
Speaker 1: at least six months or was it four months between
9:49
Speaker 1: that poll and the debate that we all saw, And
9:52
Speaker 1: there are polls from Fallow twenty twenty three as well,
9:54
Speaker 1: when Dean Phillips they represented from Minnesota, was like, hey, guys,
9:57
Speaker 1: we should probably run someone against him because he is
10:01
Speaker 1: very old, and everyone was like nah. Right. Meanwhile, the
10:05
Speaker 1: New York Times, way back when when conservatives were pointing
10:09
Speaker 1: out that the president was wandering all over and people
10:12
Speaker 1: were having to guide him by the hand, such and such,
10:15
Speaker 1: the New York Times said, no, there these are cheap fikes.
10:19
Speaker 1: There's a manipulated video, cheap fix.
10:21
Speaker 2: Yeah.
10:21
Speaker 1: But now it's like, yeah, I guess that was real. Oops.
10:25
Speaker 2: Right, The headline at the New York Times is a
10:27
Speaker 2: weary Biden heads for the exit. It's just amazing, you know.
10:32
Speaker 2: Actually the subhead is even better. Still stinging from the election,
10:36
Speaker 2: President Biden is pushing for his final priorities, but has
10:39
Speaker 2: absent in himself from the national conversation about Donald Trump,
10:43
Speaker 2: after warning repeatedly that he was a threat to American democracy.
10:47
Speaker 2: I think what the New York Times doesn't get was
10:49
Speaker 2: I didn't lied about that. He doesn't really think Donald
10:52
Speaker 2: Trump would brought to democracy. Obviously.
10:53
Speaker 1: That's it.
10:54
Speaker 2: It's not that he is too tired to take on
10:57
Speaker 2: Donald Trump. It's that he really doesn't think it's going
10:59
Speaker 2: to be the problem democracy is going to survive the
11:02
Speaker 2: Trump presidency.
11:04
Speaker 1: And is also looking out for number one right now,
11:06
Speaker 1: which is what here's always done. And this is yet
11:09
Speaker 1: another thing they fooled themselves into thinking, is that Biden
11:12
Speaker 1: is some sort of selfless country first leader when he
11:17
Speaker 1: never exhibited those traits, and then they're surprised when they
11:22
Speaker 1: do unceremoniously push him aside because he's not a selfless
11:26
Speaker 1: country first guy who was gonna step down. Yeah, there's
11:28
Speaker 1: surprise that he's like, well, I guess I'll do do
11:31
Speaker 1: us best for me now, right, What a surprise.
11:36
Speaker 2: We are shocked over here. We'll be right back on normally.
11:43
Speaker 2: So to get into that second topic of them openly
11:46
Speaker 2: saying that Biden should be trying to stop the Trump agenda.
11:52
Speaker 2: That doesn't seem like people who love democracy, Mary Catherine.
11:55
Speaker 2: That does not seem democratic to me at all. Donald
11:57
Speaker 2: Trump was elected. He was elected you know, pretty overwhelmingly.
12:02
Speaker 2: He won every single swing state. I don't even like
12:04
Speaker 2: to talk about the popular vote because we don't count
12:05
Speaker 2: you know, pop a vote is irrelevant and irrelevant metric
12:09
Speaker 2: that we insist on counting for some reason. But he
12:12
Speaker 2: won decisively. And the idea that these pods save America.
12:17
Speaker 2: Guys and others are trying to say Biden should implement
12:21
Speaker 2: policies that will make it more difficult for Donald Trump.
12:24
Speaker 1: To act his policies. That's a problem, Carol. What you
12:28
Speaker 1: don't understand is that democracy, by definition is what democratic
12:33
Speaker 1: leadership likes. And if you democratically do things that democratic
12:38
Speaker 1: leadership does not like, that is not democracy and it
12:42
Speaker 1: must be undermined. So, whether it's so much, whether it's
12:45
Speaker 1: the intelligence community or media or a combination of the two,
12:50
Speaker 1: they're going to come for you because the democracy did
12:53
Speaker 1: a bad thing. Yeah, So when the democracy does the
12:56
Speaker 1: bad things, you got to do worse things to fix
12:59
Speaker 1: the democracy.
13:00
Speaker 2: You got to punish that democracy. They've been that so yeah,
13:04
Speaker 2: they actually they call it our democracy, right, they literally
13:07
Speaker 2: mean only their type of democracy.
13:09
Speaker 1: Yes, we're in the punished democracy segment of this program
13:13
Speaker 1: right now.
13:14
Speaker 2: Yeah. So here's Julie Rojinski Raginsky on CNN talking about
13:20
Speaker 2: just this very thing.
13:22
Speaker 5: The people around him should be thinking about these things.
13:25
Speaker 5: You need to proof democracy, proof, for lack of a
13:29
Speaker 5: better world word, this coming administration. I mean, Donald Trump
13:34
Speaker 5: stands for everything that Joe Biden does not stand for.
13:37
Speaker 5: And if Democrats are true to their values. They will
13:40
Speaker 5: do everything they can with the power they have right now,
13:43
Speaker 5: which is limited to prevent Donald Trump from doing the
13:46
Speaker 5: things that he's already nowtive.
13:48
Speaker 1: For administrative sabotage. I mean, is that I'm not at
13:51
Speaker 1: all what I'm arguing.
13:52
Speaker 5: You're saying they should proof that you should somehow prove
13:54
Speaker 5: the government is able to be I.
13:56
Speaker 2: Have no, Yeah, that's exactly what she was saying.
13:59
Speaker 1: Scott.
14:00
Speaker 2: You know our national heroes, Scott Jennings so great, takes
14:03
Speaker 2: on five people every night on Sandend. But yeah, here
14:07
Speaker 2: he's talking about how she's openly saying that they need
14:12
Speaker 2: to kind of create safeguards around things that matter to
14:15
Speaker 2: them so that Donald Trump can't affect the change. But
14:18
Speaker 2: again he was elected to effect.
14:22
Speaker 1: And the pod Save bros. Also say like, hey, let's
14:24
Speaker 1: send out as much money as possible, as fast as
14:26
Speaker 1: possible under who knows what rules, with no safeguards for fraud.
14:33
Speaker 1: I mean, that's never They never worry about that, Probably
14:36
Speaker 1: to go to as many nonprofit buddy groups of theirs
14:39
Speaker 1: as possible. It seems to me there's some kind of
14:42
Speaker 1: memo that's gone out about messaging on this because both
14:45
Speaker 1: of these guys refer to this as proving, but a
14:50
Speaker 1: couple of days ago people were referring to it as
14:53
Speaker 1: Trump proofing, and somebody told them that that wasn't smart.
14:57
Speaker 1: I think got that right. So is that proving? They're
15:00
Speaker 1: like our democracy, So now they're like, oh, let's make
15:03
Speaker 1: it sound much more elevated than just sabotaging the guy
15:06
Speaker 1: who was just elected who we don't like. So they're
15:08
Speaker 1: going with a different kind of proofing. I long for
15:11
Speaker 1: the days like two thousand, when all the sabotage you
15:15
Speaker 1: got for George W. Bush was people removing the w's
15:18
Speaker 1: from the keyboards. I remember, it's like trashy, But I
15:21
Speaker 1: would take trashy and low level pranking sure over this
15:26
Speaker 1: kind of thing anyway.
15:27
Speaker 2: It's also just crazy that they're talking about it so openly.
15:31
Speaker 2: I think that that's like a sign that they still
15:33
Speaker 2: don't understand what happened to them. The American people did
15:36
Speaker 2: not want what you were selling. They did not want
15:38
Speaker 2: your program at all. So you're literally saying to the
15:42
Speaker 2: American people, we know better than you, me a talking
15:46
Speaker 2: head on CNN or me. You know a guy who
15:49
Speaker 2: sits on a microphone knows better than what the majority
15:52
Speaker 2: of the country wanted for itself, and it's just it's
15:56
Speaker 2: just very offensive.
15:57
Speaker 1: Well, and part of the reason they rejected it is
16:01
Speaker 1: the lying to their faces plus the condescension. So it's
16:04
Speaker 1: like this is a perfect combination, yep, of all of
16:08
Speaker 1: those things that people rejected, because it's like, well, you
16:11
Speaker 1: can't lecture me about norms when you're the one who
16:14
Speaker 1: wants to tear them down to Trump proof this incoming administration.
16:20
Speaker 1: And I just think they're exemplifying what handed them the
16:23
Speaker 1: l to begin with.
16:25
Speaker 2: Right and grasping that l real tightly and refusing to
16:28
Speaker 2: let it go.
16:29
Speaker 1: It's going to be a rough road, I think. By
16:32
Speaker 1: the way, I was interested to see that Jerry Connolly,
16:35
Speaker 1: who is an aged and somewhat infirm leader of the Democrats,
16:40
Speaker 1: is beat AOC, an up and coming useful leader in
16:43
Speaker 1: a leadership fight for the Oversight Committee in Congress, which
16:47
Speaker 1: is like a bunch of boring words, but the point
16:49
Speaker 1: being that once again, like seniority one, instead of handing
16:53
Speaker 1: over the reins to someone who might have a little
16:56
Speaker 1: bit better handle on how to message in a new
17:00
Speaker 1: and actually does have a little bit more populist vibe
17:03
Speaker 1: than a lot of the Democratic establishment. So I'm not
17:06
Speaker 1: sure if the road is going to be smooth. That
17:08
Speaker 1: being said, I'm not sure IOFC is widely popular either.
17:10
Speaker 1: I'm just saying right right, no.
17:12
Speaker 2: But the Democrats, I mean, they are also still holding
17:16
Speaker 2: on to the whole smoke filled rooms. That's how people
17:20
Speaker 2: make decisions time period, Like Nancy. As long as Nancy
17:24
Speaker 2: Pelosi is anywhere near Congress, this is going to continue
17:29
Speaker 2: to operate this way. She doesn't need to be in charge,
17:31
Speaker 2: she just needs to be there in order for what
17:34
Speaker 2: she wants to happen to happen. And I think that
17:37
Speaker 2: AOC really didn't stand a chance in a place where
17:41
Speaker 2: Nancy Pelosi exists.
17:43
Speaker 1: By the way, I should say for the record, I
17:44
Speaker 1: do think that conservatives underestimate AOC at their peril because
17:49
Speaker 1: I think she's smarter and more interesting then she gets
17:52
Speaker 1: credit for. So we will see what happens to her
17:55
Speaker 1: as this party moves forward.
17:57
Speaker 2: We're going to take a short break and come right
17:59
Speaker 2: back with normally.
18:03
Speaker 1: I'm glad you mentioned smoke filled rooms because a lot
18:06
Speaker 1: of people are mad once again, Carol at things happening
18:09
Speaker 1: on the Hill. Okay, so there has to be a
18:12
Speaker 1: continuing resolution, which is the giant stupid bill that Congress
18:17
Speaker 1: must pass to hold spending levels where they are so
18:21
Speaker 1: that things don't not get paid for. And this happens
18:26
Speaker 1: because Congress doesn't do its job and pass regular budget
18:30
Speaker 1: and funding bills, and so they have to do this
18:32
Speaker 1: big old one at the end of the year. This
18:34
Speaker 1: one would keep the government running until March of next year,
18:39
Speaker 1: and the deadline was coming up. But of course, as usual,
18:41
Speaker 1: Congress doesn't care that the deadline's coming up, and so
18:43
Speaker 1: now they're working on it furiously. Right before they had
18:46
Speaker 1: favor relatable. Now this means, yeah, I understand, I get it.
18:50
Speaker 1: That's actually a very normally vibe. But what happens is,
18:55
Speaker 1: especially in a tight house where you don't have very
18:57
Speaker 1: many votes, is that Democrats are going to have to
18:59
Speaker 1: get a bunch of stuff, and you're gonna have to
19:01
Speaker 1: hand out a bunch of treats to get this paid
19:04
Speaker 1: for and get this to pass. One of the things
19:07
Speaker 1: that apparently is in this one is a or proposed
19:10
Speaker 1: to be in this one. We'll see if it actually
19:12
Speaker 1: ends up in there is a pay raise for Congress.
19:17
Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel like they're you know, not reading the room.
19:22
Speaker 2: People are not interested in giving Congress a pay raise
19:26
Speaker 2: just now.
19:26
Speaker 1: No, and it seems to be a rather large one. Again,
19:30
Speaker 1: this is all in motion, so don't quote me on
19:31
Speaker 1: any individual stat because these negotiations change quickly. But they
19:36
Speaker 1: currently receive one hundred and seventy four thousand, as well
19:38
Speaker 1: as reimbursements for meals of lodging. If in what they
19:42
Speaker 1: currently have in this CR, their salary would go to
19:44
Speaker 1: two hundred and forty three thousand, which jump my goodness. Yeah, now,
19:51
Speaker 1: I think there are arguments for like, hey, it's been
19:53
Speaker 1: ten years since there's been a cost of living adjustment. However,
19:57
Speaker 1: as you note about the room, the room is not
20:00
Speaker 1: friendly to this idea. The room is quite populist right
20:04
Speaker 1: now in this country, and the idea that a bunch
20:07
Speaker 1: of mostly millionaires who are in Congress should get a
20:10
Speaker 1: large percentage increase in their salary while people are suffering
20:14
Speaker 1: is not looked upon in a friendly way. No, it's not.
20:18
Speaker 1: And you know it's interesting.
20:20
Speaker 2: When AOC first got to Congress, she actually was like,
20:23
Speaker 2: this is all we're getting paid.
20:25
Speaker 1: I remember that.
20:26
Speaker 2: She was not told about congressional salaries and look, there
20:31
Speaker 2: is an argument to be made because I think a
20:33
Speaker 2: lot of people don't get into public service because some
20:35
Speaker 2: of the you know, salaries that they make are just
20:40
Speaker 2: not that high. You have to want to be there
20:42
Speaker 2: and all of that. Plus once you're done there, you
20:46
Speaker 2: get to go work in lots of different devices thing
20:49
Speaker 2: where you make a bunch of money. Not to mention,
20:52
Speaker 2: allegedly a lot of these people are making a ton
20:56
Speaker 2: of money in the stock market, where they're just amazing here,
21:00
Speaker 2: just not alusition, so good at it. They can really
21:03
Speaker 2: go to any financial firm as long as they remain congresspeople. Yeah.
21:07
Speaker 1: Well. The discussion of this pay raise led to an
21:11
Speaker 1: interesting conversation between CNN's Mono Raju and Senator Dick Durbin
21:16
Speaker 1: of Illinois.
21:18
Speaker 6: Oh that's news to me, that's good news. You know
21:21
Speaker 6: what has it been ten years or fourteen years and
21:23
Speaker 6: no cola, no change at all? And I think it's
21:27
Speaker 6: about time something sound here's a piece of part kidding
21:29
Speaker 6: give yourselfing there is. How would I not know about
21:32
Speaker 6: a lot of as But.
21:33
Speaker 1: I mean, I mean, people look at the performance of Congress,
21:36
Speaker 1: say why should we give them more money?
21:37
Speaker 6: What about the media think about that.
21:39
Speaker 1: Fir At second, I were not paid by public money.
21:41
Speaker 6: I know you're not, but I mean half of your
21:43
Speaker 6: listeners are not there anymore. You're still getting the same
21:45
Speaker 6: baycheck what's going on?
21:47
Speaker 2: It was so good. Who knew Dick Urban had that
21:49
Speaker 2: in him.
21:50
Speaker 1: Dick Turbin goes full Trump, irritating people. BANDU right, it's great.
21:56
Speaker 2: It's so good because you know he meant it.
21:58
Speaker 1: He meant it.
21:59
Speaker 2: He have to think about that. It came off his
22:02
Speaker 2: tongue like he had it ready to go, and I
22:05
Speaker 2: was impressed.
22:06
Speaker 1: Durbin's like, you think I'm trash. We're both trash. We're
22:09
Speaker 1: in the trash together, and we should all get paid
22:12
Speaker 1: a bunch of money being crashed. That is that's the
22:15
Speaker 1: message that unites the American people. I think, I agree,
22:18
Speaker 1: I agree, And you know he's read how.
22:20
Speaker 2: Are these media outlets surviving with half of their audience
22:24
Speaker 2: gone and they're lecturing other people on like their you know,
22:29
Speaker 2: support level. It's crazy.
22:31
Speaker 1: By the way, you can tell Durbin's been in Congress
22:32
Speaker 1: for so long and not in any danger because he's like, uh,
22:35
Speaker 1: that sounds awesome, gave me more money. Why would anyone
22:39
Speaker 1: object to that that's great.
22:41
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's hard to lose Illinois, you know.
22:44
Speaker 1: Oh my goodness. We're led by the very best, we.
22:47
Speaker 2: Really are, and maybe we should pay them more so
22:49
Speaker 2: we get some slightly better people.
22:51
Speaker 1: And well that's the question, right, I feel like we're
22:53
Speaker 1: being hit hostage. But also could we get better people?
22:56
Speaker 2: I don't know, Yeah, yeah, maybe we could. That would
23:00
Speaker 2: be really really good. So we've mentioned this on X
23:03
Speaker 2: but we are going to be having and ask us
