- Lucas: Hej och välkomna till Learn Swedish with Fexingo. I'm Lucas, and as always, I'm here with Luna. Luna: Hej hej! And I'm Luna. We're so happy you're joining us for another tiny Swedish lesson. Lucas: Today we're going to do something practical — we're going to buy a backpack. A ryggsäck. Perfect for school, travel, or just carrying your stuff. Luna: Oh, I love a good backpack. And I actually need a new one for my upcoming trip. Lucas: Perfect. So let's start with the basics. To say 'I would like a backpack,' in Swedish, you say: Jag skulle vilja ha en ryggsäck. Luna: Jag skulle vilja ha en ryggsäck. Lucas: Great. That's 'I would like a backpack.' Let's break it down. 'Jag' means 'I', 'skulle vilja ha' is 'would like to have', 'en' is 'a', and 'ryggsäck' is 'backpack'. Luna: So literally 'I would like to have a backpack.' That's useful. And I can use this for other things too, right? Lucas: Exactly. You can swap the last word for anything. But let's stick with the backpack today. Now, next phrase: 'Do you have it in black?' In Swedish: Har ni den i svart? Luna: Har ni den i svart? Lucas: Good. 'Har ni' is 'do you have', 'den' is 'it', 'i svart' is 'in black'. You can change the color: 'i blå' for blue, 'i grön' for green. Luna: Okay, so if I want it in black, I ask: Har ni den i svart? And what if I want a different size? Lucas: Good question. You can ask: Vilken storlek har ni? Which means 'What size do you have?' Luna: Vilken storlek har ni? Lucas: Perfect. 'Vilken' means 'which', 'storlek' is 'size', 'har ni' is 'do you have'. So it's literally 'Which size do you have?' Luna: I can imagine myself in the store asking that. And then I'd want to know the price. How do I ask 'How much does it cost?' Lucas: That's easy: Hur mycket kostar den? Luna: Hur mycket kostar den? Lucas: Exactly. 'Hur mycket' is 'how much', 'kostar' is 'costs', 'den' is 'it'. You'll use that in many stores. Luna: Great. And before I buy, I'd like to try it on. How do I say 'Can I try it?' Lucas: Får jag prova den? That's 'Can I try it?' Luna: Får jag prova den? Lucas: Nice. 'Får jag' is 'may I', 'prova' is 'try', 'den' is 'it'. So you're politely asking to try it. Luna: Perfect. And if it fits, I'd say 'It fits well. I'll take it.' How's that? Lucas: That would be: Den passar bra. Jag tar den, tack. Luna: Den passar bra. Jag tar den, tack. Lucas: Good. 'Den passar' is 'it fits', 'bra' is 'well', 'jag tar den' is 'I take it', and 'tack' is 'thanks'. Luna: So now I have a whole conversation. I can say: Jag skulle vilja ha en ryggsäck. Har ni den i svart? Vilken storlek har ni? Hur mycket kostar den? Får jag prova den? Den passar bra. Jag tar den, tack. Lucas: You nailed it. And that's the whole purchase. Let's do a quick role-play. I'll be the shop assistant, and you be the customer. Luna: Okay, let's try. Hej, jag skulle vilja ha en ryggsäck. Lucas: Självklart. Har ni den i svart? Luna: Oh, I should ask that. So: Har ni den i svart? Lucas: Ja, vi har den i svart. Vilken storlek har ni? Luna: Vilken storlek har ni? Hmm, that's asking the shop assistant what size they have. But actually, I want to ask for my size. So maybe I should say 'Vilken storlek har du?' meaning 'What size do you have?' in a more casual way. Lucas: Good point. In a store, you might ask 'Vilken storlek har ni?' to the staff, meaning 'What sizes do you have?' And then the staff might ask you 'Vilken storlek har du?' meaning 'What size are you?' So both are useful. Luna: Ah, so 'ni' is formal or plural, and 'du' is informal. But in this case, the customer can ask 'Vilken storlek har ni?' to the shop, and the shop asks 'Vilken storlek har du?' to the customer. Lucas: Exactly. So let's continue. After asking for size, you might want to know the price. So: Hur mycket kostar den? Luna: Hur mycket kostar den? Lucas: The assistant says: Den kostar 500 kronor. Luna: 500 kronor, that's not bad. Then I'd say: Får jag prova den? Lucas: Sure. The assistant says: Ja, varsågod. Luna: And after trying, if it fits, I'd say: Den passar bra. Jag tar den, tack. Lucas: Perfect. That's the whole flow. And remember, these phrases are reusable. Swap 'ryggsäck' for 'väska', 'kappa', or anything else. Luna: That's so handy. I feel more confident about shopping in Swedish now. Lucas: And that's what Fexingo is all about — giving you the tools to have real conversations. If you're learning with us, you might want to support the show so we can keep making these episodes. We're just happy you're learning. Now, let's practice those phrases one more time. Repeat after me: Jag skulle vilja ha en ryggsäck. Luna: Jag skulle vilja ha en ryggsäck. Lucas: Har ni den i svart? Luna: Har ni den i svart? Lucas: Vilken storlek har ni? Luna: Vilken storlek har ni? Lucas: Hur mycket kostar den? Luna: Hur mycket kostar den? Lucas: Får jag prova den? Luna: Får jag prova den? Lucas: Den passar bra. Jag tar den, tack. Luna: Den passar bra. Jag tar den, tack. Lucas: You're doing great. Keep practicing these, and you'll be ready for your next shopping trip. Thanks for joining us today. Luna: See you next time. Hej då!
