- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wire to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wire to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:17Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan, and this is episode number three
- 0:20Speaker 1: eighty four, and today we are joined by the legendary
- 0:23Speaker 1: white tail bow hunter Andre de Quisto for a follow
- 0:26Speaker 1: up to our previous discussion this summer, and this time
- 0:29Speaker 1: we're diving deep into the white tail rut. All right,
- 0:34Speaker 1: welcome to the Wire Done podcast, brought to you by Onyx.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Today we're joined again by Andre de Quisto. Now, Andre
- 0:42Speaker 1: was a guest back on episode three sixties six, and
- 0:46Speaker 1: it was a It was a pretty exciting thing having
- 0:47Speaker 1: him on. He has not previously done podcast interviews up
- 0:51Speaker 1: to that point, so it was interesting to get to
- 0:53Speaker 1: hear from him. We talked for over two hours and
- 0:56Speaker 1: we still weren't able to cover everything I wanted to though,
- 0:59Speaker 1: and after hearing from many more of you saying you
- 1:02Speaker 1: wanted to hear more as well, we had to make
- 1:04Speaker 1: it happen. So if you didn't hear episode three sixty six,
- 1:08Speaker 1: be sure and go back listen to that. Get the
- 1:11Speaker 1: foundation of Andre's hunting style. Um, get all that figured out.
- 1:15Speaker 1: We talked a lot about his scouting, talked about some
- 1:17Speaker 1: of his aggressive tactics, talked about really a lot of
- 1:20Speaker 1: what he does in October and preseason. But uh, really quick,
- 1:26Speaker 1: if you're not familiar, Andrea is one of the foremost
- 1:29Speaker 1: white tail hunters in the country. He's I think it's
- 1:32Speaker 1: fair to say, kind of legendary within the do it
- 1:34Speaker 1: yourself crowd. He revolution revolutionists, excuse me, the mobile hunting world.
- 1:38Speaker 1: When he founded Lone Wolf tree stands back in the day,
- 1:42Speaker 1: he popularized a series of aggressive hunting tactics that are
- 1:46Speaker 1: now widely used and talked about. Uh. He's now the
- 1:48Speaker 1: founder of Lone Wolf custom gear and a host of
- 1:51Speaker 1: their white Tail Addictions TV show. So he's doing a
- 1:54Speaker 1: lot of stuff. And he's also I mean, he's he's
- 1:57Speaker 1: he's aggressive, he's confident, he's unique, and he's wildly successful.
- 2:02Speaker 1: So he's someone to listen to, he's someone to learn from,
- 2:06Speaker 1: and today different than the last time. Today, what we're
- 2:09Speaker 1: gonna do is grill him on the white tail Rut.
- 2:13Speaker 1: And that's because this episode is launching right now on
- 2:17Speaker 1: the doorstep of the white tail Rut. That's it. The
- 2:20Speaker 1: super Bowl of the white tail season. That the high
- 2:22Speaker 1: point of our year, the grind, the marathon, the big show.
- 2:25Speaker 1: This is it. This is happening now. So we're gonna
- 2:29Speaker 1: dig into everything Andre thinks about during the rut. Why
- 2:32Speaker 1: sometimes the rut is frustrating for him, how he still
- 2:35Speaker 1: has success many times during the rut, what he does,
- 2:38Speaker 1: how his perspective might be different than most other rut hunters.
- 2:41Speaker 1: It's interesting stuff. But before we get into that, I
- 2:43Speaker 1: do want to leave you with some of my thoughts.
- 2:46Speaker 1: I want to kind of open with with some high
- 2:48Speaker 1: level principles of hunting the rut, because, especially if you're
- 2:52Speaker 1: new to deer hunting, um, I want to make sure
- 2:55Speaker 1: you have these basic foundations covered as we go into
- 2:58Speaker 1: this time of the year because now, like the last
- 3:00Speaker 1: few days of October and the month of November, this
- 3:04Speaker 1: is that breeding season for white tail deer, which is
- 3:06Speaker 1: when kind of a lot of their caution gets thrown
- 3:09Speaker 1: out of the wind or thrown out. I don't know
- 3:11Speaker 1: what the saying as I can't think of it right now.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Putting us thrown cautions, thrown to the wind, that's it.
- 3:16Speaker 1: And uh, they let their guard down and they move
- 3:20Speaker 1: a lot more, and it presents us as hunters new opportunities.
- 3:24Speaker 1: But at the same time, it requires of us as
- 3:26Speaker 1: hunters to put a level of time and dedication into
- 3:29Speaker 1: the woods that's different than the rest of the year.
- 3:32Speaker 1: If if this is what you really want to do,
- 3:35Speaker 1: so let's cover off on a few of those basic principles.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Whether you're new or you've been doing this forever, this
- 3:41Speaker 1: is important stuff to just always keep in the back
- 3:43Speaker 1: of your mind, These principles of run hunting success or
- 3:45Speaker 1: something that I always come back to, And you've heard
- 3:47Speaker 1: me talk about it before, but but hear me out
- 3:50Speaker 1: because every year I find myself getting tangled up in
- 3:54Speaker 1: the moment of how this hunt went, and how that
- 3:57Speaker 1: went hunting, what this buck's doing, and what that siding
- 3:59Speaker 1: told me, what this trail camera image is telling me,
- 4:01Speaker 1: and what the wind is doing, what the weather is doing,
- 4:03Speaker 1: and all these ingredients get tossed into a big pot
- 4:08Speaker 1: and spun around, and then all of a sudden, I
- 4:10Speaker 1: spend hours and hours up at night stressing about what
- 4:12Speaker 1: I should do and why I should do it and
- 4:14Speaker 1: what does this mean. Um, there's there's so many different
- 4:18Speaker 1: ingredients here that you can get confused, you can get frustrated. Um,
- 4:22Speaker 1: it's it's important, I've found, at least for me to
- 4:25Speaker 1: remember that whenever I find myself in that place, to
- 4:29Speaker 1: take a step back and look at the big picture again.
- 4:33Speaker 1: So here's the big picture. Maybe this will help you
- 4:35Speaker 1: in moments like that. The principles of run hunting success.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Number one, think about two different types of hunting setups
- 4:45Speaker 1: at this time that almost always your plans should fit
- 4:49Speaker 1: into this to some degree, because this is really the simplest,
- 4:53Speaker 1: most base level of how to find success. You want
- 4:56Speaker 1: to be doing one of these two things. Number one,
- 4:58Speaker 1: focusing on the dough on dope hot spots. Right at
- 5:02Speaker 1: this time of the year, bucks are looking for a
- 5:04Speaker 1: doll that's ready to breed, or they are on a
- 5:07Speaker 1: dough that's ready to breed and trying to breed here.
- 5:09Speaker 1: But either way, bucks are with or around does because
- 5:13Speaker 1: they this is the time to mate, to procreate. That's
- 5:16Speaker 1: all they have in their mind right now. So if
- 5:18Speaker 1: you can know where the does are, that's where the
- 5:20Speaker 1: bucks are gonna be. So this can be one or
- 5:22Speaker 1: two things. This can be either dope feeding areas or
- 5:24Speaker 1: this can be dope betting areas. In the morning's usually
- 5:28Speaker 1: dope betting area is the place to be usually all
- 5:30Speaker 1: through the rest of the middle of the day. That's
- 5:32Speaker 1: the same case in the evenings doe feeding areas. Now,
- 5:37Speaker 1: something that happens, excuse me, something that happens often is
- 5:41Speaker 1: that these bucks will try to check multiple dope hot
- 5:44Speaker 1: spots throughout the day, and to do that, they're usually
- 5:47Speaker 1: gonna cruise along the down wind side of those dope
- 5:51Speaker 1: hot spots. So, if you're trying to choose where to hunt,
- 5:54Speaker 1: and you know you want to be hunting a dope
- 5:55Speaker 1: hot spot in the morning, let's say a dope betting area,
- 5:57Speaker 1: But when you're trying to pick the spot, hunt around
- 5:59Speaker 1: the doll betting area. Usually a good place to start
- 6:03Speaker 1: is on the down wind edge of them, because that's
- 6:05Speaker 1: where the bucks are gonna cruise and your scent can
- 6:07Speaker 1: be blowing away from that back behind it. So think
- 6:10Speaker 1: about that. Number one, one of those general filters to
- 6:14Speaker 1: pass your potential hunting spots through is is this a
- 6:17Speaker 1: doll hotspot? Or Number two, is this a funnel or
- 6:21Speaker 1: pinched one? Is this where some kind of feature, whether
- 6:24Speaker 1: that be cover like how much how many trees and
- 6:27Speaker 1: bushes there are or terrain like is there a saddle
- 6:31Speaker 1: and a ridge or is there a lake and a
- 6:34Speaker 1: pond over here in just one narrow bridge of landing
- 6:36Speaker 1: between it. If there's some way that the natural habitat
- 6:39Speaker 1: funnels deer movement into a narrow area, you've got a
- 6:43Speaker 1: significantly higher chance of encountering one of these bucks as
- 6:45Speaker 1: they travel from Doe hot spot to dol hot spot
- 6:48Speaker 1: because they're moving more now than any other time of
- 6:51Speaker 1: the year. So if you can find where these concentrations
- 6:53Speaker 1: of movement are sit there, that's another great red spot.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Best case scenario, you find a funnel like this in
- 7:00Speaker 1: between a couple of dough hotspots, then every book that
- 7:03Speaker 1: wants to get from point A to point B has
- 7:05Speaker 1: to pass through this narrowed area where you can hunt. Again,
- 7:09Speaker 1: try to think about wind, trying to make sure your
- 7:11Speaker 1: downwind of that point they're going to be passing. But
- 7:15Speaker 1: this is a high level concept that we always talk
- 7:19Speaker 1: about when it comes to the rut simply because it works.
- 7:22Speaker 1: So when you're confused, or when you're frustrated, or when
- 7:24Speaker 1: you're bouncing around seven different stands side ideas for your
- 7:28Speaker 1: next rut hunt. Look at these two principles of rut success.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Does a fit idea one? Does it fit idea too?
- 7:35Speaker 1: If it doesn't, maybe you're overthinking things. Now, that's about
- 7:39Speaker 1: where to hunt. The next and maybe most important principle
- 7:45Speaker 1: of rut hunting success, I think is the mental side
- 7:50Speaker 1: of things, and we talked about this last week. We
- 7:52Speaker 1: had this conversation with Ryan Holliday, all about these different
- 7:56Speaker 1: ways to deal with adversity and perseverance and learning from
- 7:59Speaker 1: fail and all that kind of stuff. And that's important
- 8:02Speaker 1: to the entire hunting season, but never more so than
- 8:04Speaker 1: during the rut, because at this time of year, at
- 8:08Speaker 1: least for if you if you're like me, this is
- 8:12Speaker 1: the case because if you're like me, you look at
- 8:14Speaker 1: the rut as a two or three weeks where you've
- 8:17Speaker 1: saved up your vacation days for this time. You're gonna
- 8:20Speaker 1: put in all your eggs into this basket. This is
- 8:23Speaker 1: when it's supposed to happen, right, This is when you
- 8:26Speaker 1: know fireworks are supposed to be going off in the woods.
- 8:28Speaker 1: You've got to be out there as much as possible.
- 8:30Speaker 1: And there's a certain amount of pressure that goes with
- 8:32Speaker 1: that too. And then if you want to hunt these
- 8:35Speaker 1: days the way, you know, you should spend as many
- 8:37Speaker 1: hours in the tree as you can, for as many
- 8:39Speaker 1: days as you possibly can. That is a lot of work.
- 8:42Speaker 1: It's a lot of three thirty a m. Wake up calls,
- 8:44Speaker 1: and that's a lot of long walks to the tree stands,
- 8:46Speaker 1: setting up stands or saddles or whatever, climbing up with
- 8:49Speaker 1: your sticks. It's sitting in the tree for twelve or
- 8:51Speaker 1: thirteen hours straight and it's freezing cold and rainy and windy,
- 8:55Speaker 1: and you're you're tired, and you're exhausted, and you haven't
- 8:58Speaker 1: ate enough and you haven't drank enough, and it sometimes
- 9:01Speaker 1: it's boring, Sometimes it's exciting. Sometimes it's frustrating. Things go wrong,
- 9:05Speaker 1: and then you get home that night and you have to,
- 9:08Speaker 1: you know, do the tours around the house and put
- 9:10Speaker 1: the kids to bed and get work done, and then
- 9:12Speaker 1: your back up three hours later do it all over again.
- 9:14Speaker 1: You've got ten more days of that. Um that can
- 9:17Speaker 1: be a grind. Now, it's it's the best kind of grind, right.
- 9:20Speaker 1: We love it. We live for this, We've dreamed about it.
- 9:23Speaker 1: This is what we have looked forward to all year.
- 9:26Speaker 1: But it's still it's still tough. It is not an
- 9:29Speaker 1: easy thing. And so if you are dedicated to this
- 9:32Speaker 1: thing and not saying you have to be, you can
- 9:34Speaker 1: be a deer hunter and just go out there a
- 9:36Speaker 1: few times here and there for a weekend and and
- 9:38Speaker 1: that can be a fun release. That's totally fun. Go
- 9:41Speaker 1: for it, have a good time. I'm glad you're doing it.
- 9:44Speaker 1: But if you are kind of the nutty version of
- 9:47Speaker 1: a white tail hunter like I am, and a lot
- 9:48Speaker 1: of my buddies and a lot of you I know are,
- 9:51Speaker 1: If this is your thing and you are dedicated to
- 9:53Speaker 1: this goal, then this is the grind that you have
- 9:56Speaker 1: to prepared to go through. And that channel engine that work,
- 10:00Speaker 1: that is part of it. And so the for lack
- 10:04Speaker 1: of a better turn, that the boys are separated from
- 10:06Speaker 1: the man or the wheat, separate from the chief, whatever chaff,
- 10:08Speaker 1: for whatever you wanna call it, this is where this
- 10:12Speaker 1: is where the separation happens. Is that if you can
- 10:16Speaker 1: just be a big talker about this or can you
- 10:18Speaker 1: actually be a big walker and pushed through the grind,
- 10:21Speaker 1: this is where this is where it happens. So can
- 10:26Speaker 1: you persevere? Can you remember that, Yeah, it's been seven
- 10:31Speaker 1: days and I haven't seen a shooter buck. But I
- 10:34Speaker 1: know I have to keep going, and I know I
- 10:35Speaker 1: need to stay positive because things can change when tough
- 10:39Speaker 1: things happen, when you drop your bow, when you miss
- 10:43Speaker 1: a deer, when you know when the neighbor shoots the
- 10:46Speaker 1: buck you were after, when you've had ten days of
- 10:48Speaker 1: not seeing any deer, when all these things happen, how
- 10:50Speaker 1: are you going to handle it? This is this is
- 10:52Speaker 1: what we talked about last week, right, It's it's how
- 10:54Speaker 1: do you bounce back from something like that? Do you
- 10:56Speaker 1: get so focused on the mistake or the karding thing
- 11:01Speaker 1: that happened that you lose your momentum in your edge
- 11:04Speaker 1: or do you say, Okay, yeah, that thing happened. The
- 11:06Speaker 1: obstacles the way, right, So we talked about the obstacles away,
- 11:10Speaker 1: this thing happened. Can I be frustrated, Yes, But the
- 11:14Speaker 1: bad thing, the challenge, the bumping the road, that's not
- 11:18Speaker 1: gonna break me. That's gonna be my next step, that's
- 11:21Speaker 1: gonna lead me to the next level of growth, or
- 11:24Speaker 1: that's gonna take me to be one step closer to
- 11:26Speaker 1: achieving my goal. This this just happened to me the
- 11:30Speaker 1: other day. So I'm kind of in the middle of
- 11:31Speaker 1: my rut grind. I started last week hunting public land
- 11:34Speaker 1: in Ohio, just dealt with a bunch of hunter pressure,
- 11:37Speaker 1: hunting pressure, never got any good deer, just basically scouted
- 11:41Speaker 1: for four days. It was frustrating, but that that just
- 11:44Speaker 1: kind of is what it is. So that that happened.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Then it came back and started hunting some of my
- 11:48Speaker 1: local properties in Michigan that I've been saving for this
- 11:51Speaker 1: time of year. Have been very excited to try to
- 11:53Speaker 1: get after tram my number one buck, to other nice
- 11:55Speaker 1: mature bucks in this area that I want to get after,
- 11:58Speaker 1: So I've been hunting some edge off well. I got
- 12:01Speaker 1: access to a little area that I haven't been able
- 12:04Speaker 1: to hunt in the past, so I've been waiting for
- 12:07Speaker 1: the right wind to get in there. And I knew
- 12:09Speaker 1: that it was gonna be great because there's a there's
- 12:11Speaker 1: a standing corn field there that had just been cut
- 12:14Speaker 1: and still is in the process of being cut. So
- 12:15Speaker 1: I know this is the absolute best, hottest food source
- 12:19Speaker 1: right on the edges from the very best betting that
- 12:21Speaker 1: I know my target buck lives in. You want to
- 12:24Speaker 1: be there, you want to be in between it, right
- 12:26Speaker 1: right in the edge of that betting, in between the
- 12:27Speaker 1: betting and the cover. So I finally had the right
- 12:30Speaker 1: wind for this last night, I slip in super duper quiet.
- 12:34Speaker 1: There's a light drizzle, so I was able to get
- 12:36Speaker 1: in there quietly. I took a really long route awround
- 12:39Speaker 1: to get in there, to make sure my wind didn't
- 12:40Speaker 1: blow anything out. I scouted my way in through the
- 12:43Speaker 1: edge and saw more fresh sign than anywhere I've seen
- 12:45Speaker 1: all year. I mean probably ten to fifteen fresh scrapes, big,
- 12:52Speaker 1: like brand new fresh, no leaves in them, scrapes that
- 12:55Speaker 1: were made all around this spot. I wanted to hunt
- 12:58Speaker 1: big rubs, the biggest rubs I've seen in the area
- 13:00Speaker 1: yet this year. I mean, this is where he's at,
- 13:04Speaker 1: and I'm I'm jacked. This is what I've been dreaming of.
- 13:08Speaker 1: So I slowly ease my way in considering the wind,
- 13:12Speaker 1: trying to be conservative to make sure I'm not going
- 13:14Speaker 1: to blow into that bedding air, but at the same
- 13:16Speaker 1: time put myself in a position that I can get
- 13:17Speaker 1: a shot in the areas. I think he's going to
- 13:19Speaker 1: travel down this inside edge between this thick grassy cover
- 13:23Speaker 1: and the trees and then the corn. Finally find a tree,
- 13:26Speaker 1: Get all set up, get up there. I'm feeling great,
- 13:28Speaker 1: feeling confident, texting my buddies, saying, man, this could happen tonight, etcetera, etcetera.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Then the wind dies more than it was supposed to,
- 13:37Speaker 1: and then the winds shifts different than it was supposed to,
- 13:41Speaker 1: and instead of a southwest, it starts edging to straight west,
- 13:44Speaker 1: and I'm getting concerned. I'm tossing milk weed up. I'm like,
- 13:46Speaker 1: oh no, please, no, oh no. And then it shifts
- 13:49Speaker 1: more and it starts going northwest, right towards that betting air.
- 13:53Speaker 1: I'm thinking, oh no, please, no, don't let this be
- 13:55Speaker 1: the case. And as this happened, the rains coming down.
- 13:59Speaker 1: It's been raining. It went from a drizzle to more
- 14:01Speaker 1: of a steady rain, so it's hard to hear things. Um,
- 14:05Speaker 1: I'm throwing milk weed and looking at this, and then
- 14:07Speaker 1: I'm thinking, you know what I think? I think I
- 14:09Speaker 1: had to get out of here. It's down to two
- 14:11Speaker 1: hours left a daylight. I mean, the best spot I've
- 14:13Speaker 1: been an all year. This is the spot to kill
- 14:15Speaker 1: the buck I've been dreaming of for three years. I've
- 14:17Speaker 1: been following this deer, studying this deer hunting this deer
- 14:19Speaker 1: plank cat and mouse in this buck for three years
- 14:22Speaker 1: and finally in the best spot I could possibly be,
- 14:24Speaker 1: and I think for right now in late October, and
- 14:27Speaker 1: the freaking wind changes from what I was supposed to be,
- 14:30Speaker 1: and it is now blowing to the worst place, or
- 14:32Speaker 1: close to the worst place. I need to get out.
- 14:36Speaker 1: And then right at that moment, as I'm coming to
- 14:38Speaker 1: the realization that I have to bail on my most
- 14:40Speaker 1: highly anticipated hunt, I hear what wow, And I jump
- 14:44Speaker 1: out of my saddle. Basically, and and to give us
- 14:48Speaker 1: a little more context, I'm hunting inside the timber from
- 14:52Speaker 1: a just cut cornfield. I'm probably thirty yards into the timber.
- 14:57Speaker 1: And then the bedding, kind of thick stuff, is another
- 14:59Speaker 1: like four of yards further inside from where I am,
- 15:03Speaker 1: and this crop field is on a different neighbor's land. Right, so,
- 15:08Speaker 1: I hear his cow. I don't know how to make
- 15:09Speaker 1: the sound, but basically it sounds like a bow going off,
- 15:13Speaker 1: and I jump out of my seat and I turned,
- 15:15Speaker 1: I look out into that field, and I looked down
- 15:17Speaker 1: another fence row, and there sixty yards away. Unbeknownst to
- 15:22Speaker 1: me this whole time is a neighbor hunting shot a
- 15:26Speaker 1: deer basically right out from behind me. And this guy
- 15:31Speaker 1: is not practicing any kind of sent control. This guy
- 15:34Speaker 1: does not have any of the things that I obsessed
- 15:36Speaker 1: over trying to make sure that deer aren't winding me. Um.
- 15:39Speaker 1: He's just out there and whatever. Um. So he shoots
- 15:43Speaker 1: a deer, the deer goes running off, crashing off, deer
- 15:45Speaker 1: blowing everywhere, and then the wind continues to be bad.
- 15:48Speaker 1: I'm sitting here realizing, Okay, I've got this thing happening.
- 15:52Speaker 1: He's blown into everything. For sure. I was on the
- 15:55Speaker 1: edge of the stuff. And what do you do? I mean,
- 15:59Speaker 1: I know, I don't know that he's gonna be blowing
- 16:01Speaker 1: his scent into this thing the entire night. He's gonna
- 16:04Speaker 1: be tracking around the entire night. So basically this spot
- 16:07Speaker 1: is blown up for the evening. So I ended up saying, Okay,
- 16:10Speaker 1: this spot's blown the haunts of bust, I might as
- 16:13Speaker 1: well not blow up another place too. So I sat
- 16:16Speaker 1: it out till the end of the night, went and
- 16:17Speaker 1: share with my neighbor, helped him look for his era, etcetera, etcetera. Um.
- 16:23Speaker 1: But the point being, I went from the highest of
- 16:25Speaker 1: highest thinking I'm in the spot to kill my buck.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Finally everything's coming together. I went from that too. Now
- 16:31Speaker 1: instead having two people's wind blowing into an area I
- 16:36Speaker 1: didn't really want to be blowing a guy walking all
- 16:39Speaker 1: over the place. Uh, you know, every kind of commotion
- 16:42Speaker 1: you can imagine is happening now, not what I expect
- 16:45Speaker 1: and not what I wanted. I could be frustrated. I
- 16:47Speaker 1: was frustrated, very frustrated. I was still frustrated this morning.
- 16:50Speaker 1: I could stay that way. At the same time, I
- 16:53Speaker 1: realized that nothing good is going to come from letting
- 16:56Speaker 1: that continue. I can't let that take me out of
- 16:59Speaker 1: the game. So now out today, I gotta shake it off.
- 17:02Speaker 1: I gotta keep at it. I gotta stay positive, and
- 17:04Speaker 1: I gotta remember they can all change in the second.
- 17:07Speaker 1: They could change tomorrow, it could change tonight. And after
- 17:10Speaker 1: three hours hunting tonight, it's down a half hour left,
- 17:12Speaker 1: it's down to ten minutes left, it's down to four
- 17:13Speaker 1: minutes left. It could change in a second. Right then,
- 17:16Speaker 1: that is the rut. That's what you gotta be thinking about,
- 17:20Speaker 1: and that's what I've encouraged all of you to do
- 17:22Speaker 1: this season. So with that out of the way, let's
- 17:25Speaker 1: hear from Andrew to Quisto. I hope you enjoy it.
- 17:28Speaker 1: I hope you have some incredible hunts in these coming
- 17:30Speaker 1: days and good luck. All right, back with me for
- 17:35Speaker 1: part two of our discussion from earlier this year is
- 17:39Speaker 1: Andre to Quisto. Andre, thank you for making time to
- 17:42Speaker 1: come back. Hey, how are you doing that? I'm good,
- 17:45Speaker 1: I'm good, and I'm glad we can be having this
- 17:47Speaker 1: conversation because back in August when we chatted last time,
- 17:52Speaker 1: we cover a lot of interesting things, got a ton
- 17:54Speaker 1: of feedback from people. People really enjoyed it, but they
- 17:57Speaker 1: wanted more. So you gotta give the people they want,
- 18:00Speaker 1: right right. I don't realized that far away. I guess still, Yeah,
- 18:04Speaker 1: time flies right that that period of the year can
- 18:07Speaker 1: go really quick. Um So, so yeah, that's that's what
- 18:10Speaker 1: I want to do, Andres. I want to try to
- 18:11Speaker 1: cover some of the things we never got to last time,
- 18:15Speaker 1: and then maybe go deeper into a few things that
- 18:16Speaker 1: people had foul up questions on. Um So, if that
- 18:20Speaker 1: all sounds good to you, I do think that a
- 18:23Speaker 1: good place to start might be in your real life
- 18:27Speaker 1: right now, which is how you season is going. Are you?
- 18:31Speaker 1: Are you willing to share this how that season has
- 18:33Speaker 1: gone so far? Yeah, what what's the story? Well, it's
- 18:38Speaker 1: been an absolute nightmare. So this is probably the first
- 18:41Speaker 1: time I ever started all season will not being able
- 18:45Speaker 1: to even walk in the woods look at anything at
- 18:48Speaker 1: any time at all to scout or prepare. I'm still
- 18:52Speaker 1: ordering sox and still ordering broadheads, and um so I'm
- 18:55Speaker 1: lipping by the little all my old equipment. I'm still
- 18:58Speaker 1: hunting out of my original one point because I still
- 19:01Speaker 1: can't get one for myself, uh, because we've been so busy.
- 19:05Speaker 1: Um but other than that, for the hour and a
- 19:09Speaker 1: half a couple of hours that I get to jump
- 19:12Speaker 1: on early morning evenings, um, I mean I could have
- 19:16Speaker 1: filled my take probably ten times over already, but not
- 19:20Speaker 1: locating the caliber there yet that I want to hunt.
- 19:23Speaker 1: So I was hoping this this would be my big week,
- 19:26Speaker 1: and it turns out that it's gonna be the busiest
- 19:28Speaker 1: week for all our products coming in and shipping out.
- 19:30Speaker 1: So I will become a rough hunter this year probably,
- 19:35Speaker 1: And that's a present. And that's something that traditionally you
- 19:40Speaker 1: usually don't care for it too much, right, No, I don't.
- 19:43Speaker 1: I mean not that I don't care for it. I mean, um,
- 19:46Speaker 1: but seeing I don't have a target buck to go
- 19:49Speaker 1: after right now anyhow, I guess it's irrelevant. Um. Um,
- 19:54Speaker 1: hopefully there's something out there, you know, I said, I
- 19:56Speaker 1: lost standing corner around or something out there that will
- 20:00Speaker 1: pique my curiosity or um, maybe we take care of
- 20:04Speaker 1: some of these big, big, ugly apes that are running
- 20:06Speaker 1: around on his property. I'm not trying to get rid
- 20:10Speaker 1: of for years. So so what do you do in
- 20:12Speaker 1: a situation like that though, where you just aren't finding
- 20:16Speaker 1: the bucket you want? How are you searching him out?
- 20:19Speaker 1: Is it just you're running a ton of cameras? Are
- 20:21Speaker 1: you observing every night? What's what's that? A bunch of
- 20:24Speaker 1: cameras out there? Um getting little business and pieces of
- 20:29Speaker 1: stuff that Cody has posted online asking asking neighbors and
- 20:34Speaker 1: other farmers if they've seen anything anything good, you know,
- 20:38Speaker 1: just your traditional short little leads that you could get. Um,
- 20:42Speaker 1: because I really haven't. I did. I didn't have a
- 20:44Speaker 1: chance to take a walk the other day and and
- 20:47Speaker 1: located what I what I like to look at is
- 20:50Speaker 1: just a massive rubs um reopen. So that tells me
- 20:55Speaker 1: there are some obviously it's a big mature dominant deer there,
- 20:59Speaker 1: but it doesn't tell me that, bro, they are so
- 21:01Speaker 1: um all the things I've had a pictures of so
- 21:04Speaker 1: far just um, you know it's some decent deer, but
- 21:07Speaker 1: nothing nothing news shattering. So yeah, so then you're becoming
- 21:15Speaker 1: a right hunter. Well I will be. I can't yeah,
- 21:19Speaker 1: get it done here. Well, I guess that's a good point.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Then let's let's tell me what you're gonna do over
- 21:23Speaker 1: this next week. Then, so the last handful days in October?
- 21:27Speaker 1: What's that going to look like for you? This year? So?
- 21:29Speaker 1: How wash? So I jumped on posts uh the other day.
- 21:32Speaker 1: I decided to do it as a pretty big eight
- 21:35Speaker 1: duck could be taken out, and I probably should have
- 21:38Speaker 1: been there a day earlier. Checked out of the cameras
- 21:41Speaker 1: and and there was a primary scrape there that about
- 21:44Speaker 1: four bucks we're battling over. I got all kinds of
- 21:47Speaker 1: view on the camera and stuff and and um, so
- 21:50Speaker 1: I went to set up on that and I had
- 21:52Speaker 1: to two bucks come down when work is great, but
- 21:54Speaker 1: not the not the big ones. So I'm concentrating on
- 21:59Speaker 1: right and um scrapes. Would be nice to know the
- 22:03Speaker 1: caliber deer that's on him so, um, this deer will
- 22:07Speaker 1: probably push one seven years and eight. And there's a
- 22:11Speaker 1: couple other ones that are in that caliber. But uh,
- 22:14Speaker 1: and these are traditionally the type of deer that will
- 22:17Speaker 1: keep the ones you want off your property because they
- 22:21Speaker 1: they take up space, um pretty aggressive. But the times
- 22:27Speaker 1: that I'll get on early in for evening and mornings.
- 22:30Speaker 1: Now obviously if I'd love to be able to sit
- 22:32Speaker 1: later right now on some midday stuff um or later mornings,
- 22:36Speaker 1: so I'll just um keep bumping around, keep checking cameras
- 22:40Speaker 1: and in between work, it stands out, coordinate things with
- 22:45Speaker 1: the business. And and I think we're gonna be all
- 22:48Speaker 1: caught up by around November one, so that'll give me
- 22:52Speaker 1: some time to get out and spend a little more
- 22:54Speaker 1: um time you go. Now, these late October hunts you
- 22:58Speaker 1: mentioned focusing on those primary scrapes. Um, can you describe
- 23:02Speaker 1: a little more and a little more detail what you
- 23:04Speaker 1: mean by that. There's there's a lot of different people
- 23:06Speaker 1: that use that term, but I've found that everyone kind
- 23:08Speaker 1: of envisions something a little bit different. What are these
- 23:11Speaker 1: scrapes look like, where are they located? These are active scrapes.
- 23:15Speaker 1: There's a lot of their scrapes everywhere. Everywhere you look,
- 23:18Speaker 1: everywhere you walk up and down, log and rolls, um,
- 23:22Speaker 1: there's scrapes. And a lot of those are like half
- 23:25Speaker 1: hearted scrapes where a deal just to shrug a donalog
- 23:28Speaker 1: and roll running to where some dolls went through and
- 23:31Speaker 1: and lay with down. These are traditionally scrapes. They are
- 23:33Speaker 1: there every year. Um, even in the spring. It looks
- 23:36Speaker 1: like there's you know, there's nothing work in it, but
- 23:39Speaker 1: it looks like there's a scrape there because they're just
- 23:41Speaker 1: every year, the same same trees, um, same areas are
- 23:46Speaker 1: usually the biggest dominant dealers running running off that, and
- 23:50Speaker 1: other ones will we'll work at the same branch. So um,
- 23:56Speaker 1: you got another note to one of my one of
- 23:58Speaker 1: the best ones on his property. It was just the
- 24:01Speaker 1: farmer trimmed his if I mentioned that last time, but
- 24:04Speaker 1: he trimmed the lanes along the fields and he cut
- 24:08Speaker 1: he cut the best primary. I don't know property branch off,
- 24:12Speaker 1: So I don't know if I was gonna try and
- 24:14Speaker 1: do a lot of these guys do them and put
- 24:16Speaker 1: some new branches in there and make it work. But
- 24:18Speaker 1: I just just kind of let it go and um
- 24:20Speaker 1: it with a tragedy. But so that's what I'll be
- 24:22Speaker 1: concentrating on. Bold scrapes. Again, I got a picture of
- 24:26Speaker 1: something that is probably the biggest that I've seen. So um,
- 24:31Speaker 1: and then we'll just stuff starting to move. Now where
- 24:34Speaker 1: it was a short short movement, these there are starting
- 24:37Speaker 1: to travel more and work more scrapes. And then, um,
- 24:40Speaker 1: so you're gonna get some stuff that you probably haven't seen,
- 24:43Speaker 1: some stuff spilling off the neighbors or it might have
- 24:45Speaker 1: been on the border property starting to work you know
- 24:48Speaker 1: where somebody's uh, scrapes that are on the property. So
- 24:52Speaker 1: when you're setting up, when you're setting up on a
- 24:54Speaker 1: scrape like that, are you setting up to be within
- 24:57Speaker 1: shooting range of the scrape or are you you trying
- 25:00Speaker 1: to set up on like a down wind access route?
- 25:03Speaker 1: How do you how do you think through that? No, yeah,
- 25:06Speaker 1: you never want to do that. The old down win
- 25:08Speaker 1: series of days gone past, where deer will scent check
- 25:13Speaker 1: a scrape, That's that's all bullshit, because I've I'd sit
- 25:16Speaker 1: down the wind of a scrape and I'd have a
- 25:17Speaker 1: deer coming from the tour opposite direction work to scrape
- 25:19Speaker 1: and lead would helping him a get shots. So you
- 25:21Speaker 1: want to be able to shoot that scrape, but you
- 25:24Speaker 1: gotta have your A game on. And right now you'll
- 25:28Speaker 1: see in your cameras are are just most of it
- 25:31Speaker 1: was after dark. Now they're starting to get right after dark.
- 25:36Speaker 1: And this next week now they're going to get just
- 25:38Speaker 1: a little earlier and early enough um where they'll be there,
- 25:42Speaker 1: you know, in daylight hours. So this is the week
- 25:45Speaker 1: to capitalize on it. Um. And like I said last night,
- 25:50Speaker 1: I had when I could have one of these smaller
- 25:53Speaker 1: bucks that was working that area came in and worked
- 25:55Speaker 1: one of the scrapes off of that big one, um,
- 25:59Speaker 1: which I also could from the next tree. So I
- 26:02Speaker 1: might even give that. Now we just got a fresh
- 26:03Speaker 1: stoll uh he didn't show last night. I might get
- 26:07Speaker 1: that one more, one more shot here, um before I
- 26:11Speaker 1: start heading to some stuff, wander into some stuff a
- 26:15Speaker 1: little closer to food sources. Now we got snow on
- 26:17Speaker 1: the ground, a little nastier weather. So yeah, so when
- 26:20Speaker 1: do you switch to more of a you know, when
- 26:23Speaker 1: you move away from the scrapes and focus on core
- 26:25Speaker 1: rutt stuff. Is that like November one on the dot?
- 26:28Speaker 1: Or is something else? Last year it ended up around
- 26:31Speaker 1: that that time usually, um, you just get a feel
- 26:34Speaker 1: for what's going on on the property with the activity
- 26:37Speaker 1: of the deer. Um Like now you're deer feed and
- 26:40Speaker 1: heavy are still in the corn fields and all that,
- 26:42Speaker 1: and these deer are out searching and putting down other
- 26:47Speaker 1: scrapes for um for groups of deer that are in
- 26:52Speaker 1: different areas, so they're traveling more. So now you can
- 26:55Speaker 1: you can be on some of those scrapes or on
- 26:56Speaker 1: field edges where the or where a lot of the
- 26:58Speaker 1: dolls are starting to um or are feeding, and then
- 27:02Speaker 1: some of them bucks will start coming out, and it
- 27:05Speaker 1: seems like they move earlier and earlier, and all of
- 27:06Speaker 1: a sudden they're up and they're moving and they don't
- 27:09Speaker 1: stop moving. So UM, I was hoping last night, and
- 27:13Speaker 1: I thought it was gonna happen, because one of the
- 27:15Speaker 1: bucks that that came in down there obviously got booted
- 27:19Speaker 1: out off the mountaintop there from another dear and he
- 27:23Speaker 1: come running through like a scared little a little b
- 27:27Speaker 1: and uh, and I thought for sure that thing would
- 27:29Speaker 1: come down to work that's scrape, but it never did.
- 27:31Speaker 1: And I was hoping another buck would come in and
- 27:32Speaker 1: get on that scrape where he would see that then
- 27:35Speaker 1: get get a gander up and come on down, but
- 27:39Speaker 1: never never came off the the mountain sol Um. Now
- 27:44Speaker 1: they'll start moving out and moving earlier, and and they'll
- 27:48Speaker 1: be a little tougher to pin him on the actual
- 27:50Speaker 1: one scrape, you know. So yeah, so once November does
- 27:53Speaker 1: hit and it's it's feeling like the ruts on um.
- 27:57Speaker 1: And now I know you say that the rut has
- 27:58Speaker 1: been frustrating for you in the past, as you like
- 28:00Speaker 1: to be after one specific buck. But in this kind
- 28:02Speaker 1: of case where you don't have the one specific buck
- 28:06Speaker 1: that your heart set on, which is a situation that
- 28:08Speaker 1: a lot of people listening are in right, they just
- 28:09Speaker 1: want to kill any good buck. Um, what's it? Then? Yeah,
- 28:13Speaker 1: so what do you what are you doing once the
- 28:16Speaker 1: rut hits? What does your day and your setups look like?
- 28:19Speaker 1: So I still scout during that that time because certain
- 28:24Speaker 1: areas and spots that are the farm will will heat up.
- 28:27Speaker 1: But their traditional stand set ups or locations that you
- 28:30Speaker 1: know from time tested or you read the sign, you
- 28:34Speaker 1: want to be set up in those spots proper with
- 28:37Speaker 1: the wind and the whole goal is that anything that
- 28:40Speaker 1: comes through there, um, you are able to kill. So
- 28:44Speaker 1: let's say you set up on a spot like that
- 28:46Speaker 1: and you get a bunch of deer come through and
- 28:48Speaker 1: nothing that you want to shoot. As long as everything
- 28:50Speaker 1: that came through could have got an arrow on it,
- 28:52Speaker 1: and you could have been successful until the tag it
- 28:55Speaker 1: was successful set you just had to you know. Um
- 28:59Speaker 1: And and the biggest thing, the highest thing for me,
- 29:01Speaker 1: is to make a last minute decision because we've got
- 29:04Speaker 1: a lot of rack bocks around here, in big rack
- 29:07Speaker 1: bocks of it's the one you want, and that's very
- 29:10Speaker 1: very hard to do on the fly. So it's really
- 29:13Speaker 1: nice to identify something with a camera before. And you know,
- 29:17Speaker 1: you know, when you see that deer, you know, you
- 29:19Speaker 1: get yourself in gold mode and you're, um, you're you're
- 29:24Speaker 1: ready when it comes through. Otherwise you're just you know,
- 29:26Speaker 1: right to the last minute, you're gonna make it. Have
- 29:28Speaker 1: to make a split decision whether you want to harvest
- 29:30Speaker 1: that deer or not. You know, so um and guys
- 29:34Speaker 1: make the mistakes. So it matter of fact of just
- 29:36Speaker 1: the buddy of mine just all happened real quick, and
- 29:40Speaker 1: he's got a deer in the ground that's nice, but
- 29:43Speaker 1: not all that big that he wished you would have,
- 29:45Speaker 1: you know, wish you would have took a second look
- 29:48Speaker 1: or had an opportunity to figure it out. But it's
- 29:50Speaker 1: just it's more than what he wanted, you know. So um,
- 29:54Speaker 1: and that happens a lot. So you mentioned that you're
- 29:57Speaker 1: still scouting at this point looking for sign. What's the
- 30:00Speaker 1: sign that matters for you during the rut? Because we
- 30:02Speaker 1: covered a lot about what matters to you in October?
- 30:04Speaker 1: But is that different at all now? So there's obviously
- 30:09Speaker 1: it's it's been raining here, like I think we had
- 30:12Speaker 1: six inches in the last few days. There's mud everywhere.
- 30:15Speaker 1: You can read sign. Her blind man could read sign
- 30:17Speaker 1: right now. Um, I'm gonna concentrate on groups of dolls
- 30:23Speaker 1: now where all the dolls are feeding, where they're at
- 30:25Speaker 1: for in a little bit they're probably going to height
- 30:27Speaker 1: and mode. But wherever those wherever those dolls are now
- 30:30Speaker 1: and feeding now, there's gonna be a lot of bucks
- 30:34Speaker 1: round around, poking around, even though the dolls aren't ready. Um,
- 30:38Speaker 1: So I'm gonna concentrate on spots like that that are
- 30:40Speaker 1: heating up, especially picked corn fuel. Over here. Your alfelfa
- 30:45Speaker 1: is dying ao, but now our clover are still kicking
- 30:47Speaker 1: in pretty good. Um. So they're they're feeding a lot
- 30:50Speaker 1: in that you know, clover field. Uh, and then we
- 30:53Speaker 1: got some turnips and radishes in those will start kicking
- 30:55Speaker 1: in so um. You know, you start getting a lot
- 30:58Speaker 1: of dolls feeding on that, you're gonna want to be
- 31:01Speaker 1: hunting basically those spots even though you're not hunting the
- 31:04Speaker 1: dolls them bucks will be there and it will be
- 31:08Speaker 1: you know, out in the fields sniffing around and stragging them.
- 31:11Speaker 1: So and that's mostly for evenings on those food sources
- 31:15Speaker 1: or even will you be close to that even for
- 31:17Speaker 1: those mornings evenings you could be on those spots even
- 31:20Speaker 1: depending upon your moon faces in the mornings, but traditionally
- 31:24Speaker 1: off of those spots in the morning where they're coming
- 31:26Speaker 1: back to bed, yeah not be Let's say you're back
- 31:31Speaker 1: in the timber. You know, those deer out there all
- 31:34Speaker 1: feeding and they're gonna be trickling back in um to
- 31:37Speaker 1: bed in the morning. And and and now they're starting to
- 31:41Speaker 1: especially when the corn starts coming down or starting to
- 31:43Speaker 1: have a little bit longer of a a run back
- 31:47Speaker 1: to betting instead of betting right, But where they're at
- 31:49Speaker 1: a lot of them, dear, been just living in that corn.
- 31:52Speaker 1: Mostly you're you know, just parking it. They're eating and
- 31:55Speaker 1: and milling around. So do you do anything different once
- 31:58Speaker 1: that corn comes down to that flip any switches for you?
- 32:01Speaker 1: Because I know across a lot of parts of the
- 32:03Speaker 1: country that's happening right now. It's happening for me in
- 32:05Speaker 1: a proper DWN hunt. It's it's nice because you know,
- 32:09Speaker 1: well the outside is most of my corns out and
- 32:12Speaker 1: all my neighbors stilling, which is a very bad thing.
- 32:14Speaker 1: So once all the corn comes down, that cuts your
- 32:18Speaker 1: more than half your cover that those deer can be
- 32:21Speaker 1: in is gone. So that's just it just makes it
- 32:24Speaker 1: an easier, easier hunt. Um, if you've got corn and
- 32:28Speaker 1: all year you can have bucks living in that corn
- 32:30Speaker 1: most of all, you know, then those could be out
- 32:32Speaker 1: in there and it's just a little tougher tougher to
- 32:34Speaker 1: get to them. So yeah, So those those the food
- 32:38Speaker 1: sources you mentioned, like a recently cut corn field or
- 32:41Speaker 1: a turnip field or elf helfa or whatever um you mentioned,
- 32:46Speaker 1: usually gonna hunt those in the evenings. Can you walk
- 32:49Speaker 1: me through how you would specifically set up a stand
- 32:52Speaker 1: to be hunting one of those food sources, because some
- 32:54Speaker 1: people might hear you say that and think that you're
- 32:56Speaker 1: just randomly on the edge of the field. I'm guessing,
- 33:00Speaker 1: I don't know, are you thinking about certain things with
- 33:02Speaker 1: how dear getting down into the food source or areas
- 33:05Speaker 1: where you can find a wind safe position wherever you're
- 33:08Speaker 1: ambush So it is you're just you're going to make
- 33:10Speaker 1: sure your your wind is it's right for that. I'm
- 33:12Speaker 1: I'm on I'm on one of my favorite foodstre spots.
- 33:17Speaker 1: Uh quarantine left to me over field to the right,
- 33:21Speaker 1: I'm on a hedgerow in a pine eight feet off
- 33:24Speaker 1: the ground that's just stark naked, that strategically located where
- 33:29Speaker 1: I can even get some on the right wind with
- 33:32Speaker 1: the right speed, I can get the wind literally growing
- 33:35Speaker 1: blown over the top of deer. They're coming down onto
- 33:37Speaker 1: me and up, and it's just it's phenomenal. I'm not
- 33:39Speaker 1: even in the timber, I'm I'm kind of out on
- 33:42Speaker 1: the edges of it um. And that's what's really nice
- 33:45Speaker 1: about that is you can get a glimpse at something
- 33:48Speaker 1: that you wouldn't normally see if you're just inside the woods.
- 33:54Speaker 1: All of a sudden you see, you know, big old
- 33:55Speaker 1: buck pop out way at the end of the clover field,
- 33:58Speaker 1: chase a few dolls around and jump back again. Um,
- 34:01Speaker 1: that's some great until to have the slide over the
- 34:03Speaker 1: next day and and make a move on it. Where
- 34:05Speaker 1: if you're a lot of guys like to stay back
- 34:08Speaker 1: in the timber a little bit catch from coming out,
- 34:09Speaker 1: you don't see half of what. Um um, you know
- 34:14Speaker 1: what you're learning on on pole so that I don't
- 34:16Speaker 1: know if a lot of guys know that. But years
- 34:17Speaker 1: ago I was a big, big field edge hunter. I
- 34:19Speaker 1: mean I spent every evening was on a a field
- 34:24Speaker 1: edge and never even really went back into the timber
- 34:25Speaker 1: and stuff. And so you get a chance to learn
- 34:27Speaker 1: a lot from that and um um, some exciting hunting. Yeah,
- 34:33Speaker 1: now what we kind of talked about this in August,
- 34:37Speaker 1: but I want to just bring it up again and
- 34:40Speaker 1: really specifically focus on during the rut, and that is
- 34:43Speaker 1: the snare you just described there where you're sitting somewhere
- 34:46Speaker 1: and you see a buck pop out and he chases
- 34:48Speaker 1: a dough off the food plot or the field and
- 34:50Speaker 1: he's back in the timber. So you saw a buck
- 34:52Speaker 1: you want to shoot, and you saw him do something.
- 34:54Speaker 1: So in a lot of cases i'd say, are right,
- 34:56Speaker 1: go there and hunt there the next day. But in
- 34:59Speaker 1: this case rut. Yeah right, So tell me now, now
- 35:02Speaker 1: you're just something chasing a dell. It could be random,
- 35:05Speaker 1: right would you would you move over there? Yeah? If
- 35:07Speaker 1: it's small bucks shagging around, you can kind of tell when. Um,
- 35:12Speaker 1: but that might be a just an area that dead
- 35:15Speaker 1: deer is coming to frequent dead feel to see what's
- 35:17Speaker 1: on it and then popping off. Um, those dolls. If
- 35:22Speaker 1: you can identify or or see a group of dolls
- 35:25Speaker 1: where dolls coming into heat, it's like having live bait
- 35:28Speaker 1: for you. So traditionally that doll will not get bread
- 35:31Speaker 1: for four days. You'll have the stink where the buckle
- 35:35Speaker 1: know it's getting close. Um. And those deer are not
- 35:39Speaker 1: like the rut where they change their their patterns. They
- 35:42Speaker 1: still go to their bedding and they're feeding. So you
- 35:44Speaker 1: can kind of if you know that section of your
- 35:47Speaker 1: area of woods and you know them, then deer traditionally
- 35:50Speaker 1: comes to that field and go back on that corner.
- 35:53Speaker 1: You know, there could be four other groups of deer
- 35:55Speaker 1: coming that go off totally different ways to bed and
- 35:58Speaker 1: coming from different ways. So now you know that buck
- 36:02Speaker 1: is concentrating on those dolls. So you go over there
- 36:05Speaker 1: and you you put yourself in that corridor. Um, you've
- 36:08Speaker 1: got a portable stand. You go over there. You see
- 36:11Speaker 1: what you know, which what trails are really heavy. You know,
- 36:14Speaker 1: you get get down one the bums to twich you're
- 36:18Speaker 1: spot your hunt them. Um, so okay, this is this
- 36:22Speaker 1: is important. I think you're basically saying that, well, you
- 36:26Speaker 1: might not be able to usually pattern a buck during
- 36:28Speaker 1: the rut, you can pattern the dos. And when you
- 36:31Speaker 1: know that a group of does or one of them
- 36:34Speaker 1: within a family group is either in heat or shuret
- 36:36Speaker 1: seems like it's close, and you know where those doughes
- 36:39Speaker 1: spend the time, focus on that spot for the next
- 36:41Speaker 1: few days, and you you you kind of pattern a
- 36:44Speaker 1: buck by doing that, because you really can't you really
- 36:47Speaker 1: can't pattern a buck at that time, or they just
- 36:49Speaker 1: are I think I mentioned that and somebody else's podcast
- 36:53Speaker 1: over they don't know what they're doing the next day.
- 36:57Speaker 1: That could be, you know, once that ship starts sitting
- 36:59Speaker 1: a fan. That's ah, it's pretty chaotic, and it's weird
- 37:03Speaker 1: that you you know, you got these deers there pattern
- 37:05Speaker 1: they're in certain areas, these books, and as they start
- 37:09Speaker 1: branching out and traveling more, they're just men are off
- 37:13Speaker 1: on tangents, you know, and they don't know what they're
- 37:15Speaker 1: gonna run into. And um, so you're kind of like
- 37:19Speaker 1: I said, right now, a good is a good time
- 37:21Speaker 1: to um. They're still still working those scrapes. But once
- 37:26Speaker 1: it gets to the point where you just don't start
- 37:28Speaker 1: coming a little bit, those scrapes are really hit or miss,
- 37:31Speaker 1: and I don't like to um burn up a lot
- 37:34Speaker 1: of time on them, you know, unless they're writing a
- 37:36Speaker 1: corridor where the deer are traveling. Um, then obviously the
- 37:39Speaker 1: bucks coming through, he'll he'll work it. But um, yeah,
- 37:43Speaker 1: you can pattern pattern in dolls, patternet spot, get that
- 37:46Speaker 1: spot and then just just hunt it. That's uh. Now
- 37:50Speaker 1: is that more of what it was done? Is that
- 37:52Speaker 1: more of a thing that just works at the very
- 37:55Speaker 1: beginning of the run. I'm wondering if once you're in
- 37:57Speaker 1: November ten and a percent of the dos or heat,
- 38:01Speaker 1: it probably isn't as effective because because everything's lit up, right,
- 38:05Speaker 1: So then then what you want to do is now
- 38:06Speaker 1: you're gonna look. Now you're on located adult that's literally
- 38:10Speaker 1: in heat, and the bucks are dogging her. She could
- 38:13Speaker 1: be bread. In a couple of days, you're gonna have
- 38:16Speaker 1: not one buck on her. You're gonna have a shiploadle
- 38:18Speaker 1: bucks and that and that little I don't know if
- 38:21Speaker 1: you ever experienced the turn the ruck. You'll be on
- 38:23Speaker 1: a wherever you're actually least your property, and all of
- 38:25Speaker 1: a sudden, for two or three days, four days, the
- 38:27Speaker 1: thing just it's just ice cool. It's like a ghost town. Um.
- 38:31Speaker 1: It was like on fire for a minute, and then
- 38:33Speaker 1: just pull all those bucks might be on one doll
- 38:38Speaker 1: that's going on to heat and just trailing her and
- 38:41Speaker 1: telling her and wherever the hell she's at or traveling too,
- 38:45Speaker 1: that's where they're at. So you have to have the
- 38:47Speaker 1: werewold all to go find that, um situation. It's pretty
- 38:52Speaker 1: it's pretty easy with scouting and I do the old
- 38:54Speaker 1: bumping dumb at that time, you'll you'll jump a bunch
- 38:56Speaker 1: of bucks in a drawer in a certain spot. Uh.
- 39:00Speaker 1: And if there's a bunch of them there and someone
- 39:01Speaker 1: may even moving or running off, you kind of know
- 39:04Speaker 1: that you're in the right draw so you could, um,
- 39:09Speaker 1: you know, you can step up and hunt hunt that
- 39:11Speaker 1: spot and if you're not, if you're on the other
- 39:13Speaker 1: side of the farm, you'll you'll burn up to three
- 39:15Speaker 1: days and not literally not see you see a thing.
- 39:19Speaker 1: And I don't know if you've experienced it, but I've
- 39:21Speaker 1: had his menus. You know, ten twelve bucks all in
- 39:25Speaker 1: one draw, um, trying to get ahold of one dough
- 39:28Speaker 1: that's that's coming in, you know. Yeah, And this is
- 39:33Speaker 1: one of those things that I want to dive deeper
- 39:34Speaker 1: into because you mentioned this real lightly last time, But
- 39:39Speaker 1: talk to me a little bit about the scenario where
- 39:44Speaker 1: you would do this. So I know you said, Okay,
- 39:46Speaker 1: during the rut and it's cold and cold by like
- 39:48Speaker 1: you're not seeing a lot of activities. So is there
- 39:51Speaker 1: a certain window like dates is it? Is this a
- 39:53Speaker 1: thing that from no feeling okay, yeah, you'll be sitting
- 39:58Speaker 1: in it's like Jesus Christ, you know, this is this
- 40:01Speaker 1: is insane. You're sitting here. It's just uh you're thinking,
- 40:04Speaker 1: you're all you're in your traditional good spots, uh, and
- 40:07Speaker 1: it's just it's just stuff just goals just goes cold
- 40:11Speaker 1: on you and you just, um, you gotta find out
- 40:14Speaker 1: where the action is happening, you know, and it's and
- 40:16Speaker 1: it's happening somewhere and sadly, if you've got a small piece,
- 40:21Speaker 1: it could be happening on somebody else's deal and you're
- 40:24Speaker 1: you're stuff just waiting for um, waiting for it to happen.
- 40:27Speaker 1: So are there any specific kinds of places that you
- 40:31Speaker 1: are going when you're trying to find where this rut
- 40:33Speaker 1: fest is happening? Is it? Are you gonna walk right
- 40:36Speaker 1: away or hit each betting area or what I know?
- 40:40Speaker 1: Um like on this property? You know, and and with
- 40:44Speaker 1: experience of hunting us a spot you should over over
- 40:47Speaker 1: years you should learn those. We have an area here
- 40:49Speaker 1: that there's a long drawn out, really sick nasty cedars
- 40:56Speaker 1: grass is an old pastor area that literally comes to
- 40:59Speaker 1: a law ms rowing on the point and ends up
- 41:01Speaker 1: going nowhere. It comes to all open fields and at
- 41:05Speaker 1: that time of the year, them those just they all
- 41:07Speaker 1: everything puts down into that type point. It's like really
- 41:11Speaker 1: thick where they can kind of height and try and
- 41:13Speaker 1: say for them dolls, and it just it just lights
- 41:16Speaker 1: up like you wouldn't believe in that corner and you
- 41:18Speaker 1: will just see big buck after big buck just heading
- 41:22Speaker 1: down into that corner shopping for somethone heading back out
- 41:25Speaker 1: you know, looking if they're if they're in there, if
- 41:26Speaker 1: they're stacked in or and I have a numerous, numerous
- 41:30Speaker 1: big deer um in that spot and now I already
- 41:34Speaker 1: have now I have stands set for where they come
- 41:37Speaker 1: in and out of there. So it's it's a really
- 41:39Speaker 1: nice set. Um. I got a buddy coming out this year.
- 41:43Speaker 1: I'm gonna put him on that spot. And hell, that
- 41:45Speaker 1: was stuff a good time, so um kind of a
- 41:48Speaker 1: it's thick, but it's grassy. It's thick with mixed pines.
- 41:52Speaker 1: So where you're sitting you can see a lot, if
- 41:54Speaker 1: that makes sense. You know, you're not real high in
- 41:56Speaker 1: the stand, but you get a chance to see all
- 41:58Speaker 1: the action and uh. And some of the spots are
- 42:01Speaker 1: where you're you're so thick at the pint. It really
- 42:04Speaker 1: sucks because it's it just happens all of a sudden boom.
- 42:08Speaker 1: There's you know, there's a hundred and sixty bucks sitting
- 42:10Speaker 1: right there, and you didn't even have time to react
- 42:12Speaker 1: or get ready, and you know you got about whose
- 42:15Speaker 1: seconds to make a move or it's or it's gone
- 42:17Speaker 1: type of things. So I hate those spots. But there
- 42:20Speaker 1: are some that are that are really good that a
- 42:23Speaker 1: guy just has to sit, you know. Let's say then
- 42:27Speaker 1: we we are searching for a place like that. Let's
- 42:30Speaker 1: say you know, I went out, it's been a lousy
- 42:32Speaker 1: two days of red hunting, and I'm thinking to myself, Okay,
- 42:36Speaker 1: there must be something going on somewhere else. I'm gonna
- 42:39Speaker 1: try to find it. I'm getting aggressive, so I'm walking
- 42:41Speaker 1: around like you're describing. I'm checking out some of these nasty, grassy,
- 42:45Speaker 1: thick spots and I find it. I get in there,
- 42:47Speaker 1: and all of a sudden, two bucks go running off,
- 42:49Speaker 1: and I see a doe squired out, and I'm thinking, okay,
- 42:52Speaker 1: this might be what we're talking about. Can you tell
- 42:56Speaker 1: me how you set up in that spot? Like, because
- 42:58Speaker 1: do you want to walk through it all and see it?
- 43:01Speaker 1: Do you stop right then? You're you're there? Actually found
- 43:03Speaker 1: them other load. Now you just you know, you look
- 43:05Speaker 1: for the beat trail or a sign that that's that's
- 43:08Speaker 1: good with the with the wind there, and you get
- 43:10Speaker 1: on that. Uh you get on that that trail and
- 43:13Speaker 1: you set up and you you sit tight. I've had
- 43:16Speaker 1: a lot of times where I'd be setting up a
- 43:17Speaker 1: stand and uh um. Sometimes I'll run and grab a
- 43:21Speaker 1: stand and and and bring one back in and set
- 43:23Speaker 1: up on that. And I've had a lot of times
- 43:24Speaker 1: right how to stand with me? And as I'm setting up,
- 43:28Speaker 1: lo and behold a freaking deer come piling right back
- 43:30Speaker 1: in through. And um you got you got a buck
- 43:34Speaker 1: standing there watching you set up your stand too. So um,
- 43:38Speaker 1: that's why I traditionally like to stay kind of low
- 43:40Speaker 1: and um, kind of out of the way. But yeah,
- 43:43Speaker 1: when you find those little uh louting honey hooles, I've
- 43:47Speaker 1: done a lot of times. I've pushed them all out
- 43:49Speaker 1: of there, got my stand, and boom, they all come
- 43:51Speaker 1: just you know, toward evening, even if they went and
- 43:54Speaker 1: bed and a little further, just come come piling out
- 43:56Speaker 1: of there. Um, those bucks all tuntings and stuff. Soon.
- 44:00Speaker 1: How long will you give a spot like that? Will
- 44:01Speaker 1: you hunt it for two more days? Will you sit
- 44:04Speaker 1: on it for a while? A spot like that, you're
- 44:06Speaker 1: gonna you'll capitalize on it right away. You're in, you're
- 44:09Speaker 1: in the ship. It's gonna happen right then that night
- 44:11Speaker 1: you're on red hot sign. Um. If it's if it
- 44:16Speaker 1: takes two days, those they're they're not there. They they
- 44:19Speaker 1: had an offer who knows what the hell happened. You know,
- 44:23Speaker 1: mighty ran across the road, you might chase to cross
- 44:25Speaker 1: across the road or something back in there, and some
- 44:27Speaker 1: other big guy got onto it and they're battling over there.
- 44:30Speaker 1: But traditionally, um, when it does, when they're kind of
- 44:35Speaker 1: that doll, they're gonna they don't give a ship what
- 44:37Speaker 1: you are as long as you're not bumping and spooking
- 44:40Speaker 1: the dough. And a lot of times they don't the
- 44:42Speaker 1: dolls I even't seem to care. I've almost had the
- 44:44Speaker 1: assumption that some of them dos literally bring them bucks
- 44:49Speaker 1: by you, hoping the freaking that you can get the
- 44:51Speaker 1: hell that that thing off their aft, you can punted back,
- 44:54Speaker 1: you know, so help me out. But it's, uh, yeah,
- 44:57Speaker 1: it's weird. It's and they don't give a ship. They
- 45:00Speaker 1: got a hot goal. They can see you, they can um.
- 45:03Speaker 1: They ain't leaving her side. Wherever she's going, she's they're following.
- 45:07Speaker 1: What about What about a situation like you personally might
- 45:11Speaker 1: find yourself in where you go and you find one
- 45:14Speaker 1: of these hotspots you're hunting and you're in the middle
- 45:16Speaker 1: of it, there's a dough run around, there's seven bucks
- 45:18Speaker 1: all over the place, but none of them are the
- 45:20Speaker 1: buck you want, so you're not gonna hang around just
- 45:25Speaker 1: in case a big one. Absolutely. So like early season
- 45:28Speaker 1: this year, I'm I'm sitting observation post. Nothing's going on yet,
- 45:34Speaker 1: everything's uh. I go into certain fields that I got
- 45:38Speaker 1: food plots, hel Delfa, and I sit back and I watch,
- 45:42Speaker 1: and let's say I got five seven bucks off the
- 45:47Speaker 1: field feeding a bunch of dolls out there. None of
- 45:50Speaker 1: them are acknowledging each other, They're just on the feed.
- 45:53Speaker 1: It's it's second week October. I basically know that what
- 45:57Speaker 1: I've seen that night there is what that place has
- 45:59Speaker 1: to offer. And I I just get down and I
- 46:03Speaker 1: go look at the next spot. And then I, uh
- 46:05Speaker 1: so I went to another spot that well, it was
- 46:07Speaker 1: actually spot three, and that's where I located three monstrous
- 46:12Speaker 1: eight points right off one of our food plots. Just um,
- 46:15Speaker 1: and you'll see some of the stuff on white peledictions
- 46:17Speaker 1: this year. I got on video, but um, you know,
- 46:21Speaker 1: it's pretty excited. I've seen some nice cages coming out
- 46:24Speaker 1: and shoot and um and they're all freaking eggs, big disavates.
- 46:30Speaker 1: Uh So I kind of know that that's what that
- 46:32Speaker 1: spot has to offer. So I kept bouncing a little
- 46:34Speaker 1: bit of time that I had. Uh a matter of fact,
- 46:39Speaker 1: I think that one spot I had to come back
- 46:42Speaker 1: to one time because I got a call a truck
- 46:44Speaker 1: was coming. I had to get down at a half
- 46:46Speaker 1: hour before dark and go onload the truck, which um
- 46:53Speaker 1: just about killed me. But that last half hour could
- 46:55Speaker 1: have been where maybe a magna would have came out
- 46:58Speaker 1: and I had a glimpse of them, So I didn't
- 46:59Speaker 1: get the until that I really wanted there. But normally,
- 47:02Speaker 1: like I said, you your weed through it. Most guys
- 47:05Speaker 1: are they an't leaving that you know they're parking her
- 47:08Speaker 1: grass or seeing them here, that's they're not leaving that spot.
- 47:11Speaker 1: And um, and also the stand that will have a
- 47:15Speaker 1: shipload of one fifties come through and I'll get done
- 47:17Speaker 1: and I won't come back because there's just not what
- 47:19Speaker 1: I'm looking for in that spot. So ma'am, yeah, well
- 47:25Speaker 1: you know what you want and I gotta go find it.
- 47:28Speaker 1: I get that. What about uh the next scenario in
- 47:35Speaker 1: here where you found this pocket of excitement and you
- 47:40Speaker 1: do see a buck you want, but he's locked on
- 47:43Speaker 1: that dough hard and you know they're not they're not
- 47:47Speaker 1: coming your way. Do you walk me through what you
- 47:51Speaker 1: are you gonna throw the throw the book at him
- 47:53Speaker 1: with every call and rattling sequence you got chasing down.
- 47:57Speaker 1: I've done a little of that stuff, but all the
- 47:59Speaker 1: call and adela and you want and taking that buck
- 48:02Speaker 1: off that door, you're gonna have to. So let's say
- 48:06Speaker 1: maybe it's a doll that you know, Maybe it's a
- 48:08Speaker 1: dough you've seen before and you can identify and you
- 48:11Speaker 1: know her travel routes, or we're you know, you're just
- 48:14Speaker 1: try and get on that corridor. Um. A good calling
- 48:20Speaker 1: card for you to key in on is when when
- 48:22Speaker 1: a big dominant deer, if he's got other bucks harass
- 48:27Speaker 1: and trying to get to her, they will leave some aggressive,
- 48:30Speaker 1: aggressive rubs on those trails that that dough is using.
- 48:35Speaker 1: And that's when you find that just you sit that
- 48:37Speaker 1: trail because you're you're gonna get your crack the next
- 48:39Speaker 1: day that doesn't come through there and he's gonna be
- 48:41Speaker 1: on ear and of seeing that just dozens of times
- 48:46Speaker 1: over the years. So um, you can get some good
- 48:49Speaker 1: until that way, it's still a little still a little
- 48:52Speaker 1: bit of scouting. Um, I've already grabbed the stand, freaking
- 48:57Speaker 1: ran around almost think I was outcometing, and tried to
- 48:58Speaker 1: set up um where there was more of a pinch point,
- 49:02Speaker 1: thinking that doll was heading that direction. She go through,
- 49:04Speaker 1: and I just I'd just be awf a little too
- 49:07Speaker 1: far and the head through and hit up somewhere else. So, um,
- 49:12Speaker 1: but I don't know how you could call a buck
- 49:15Speaker 1: off a doll that's in heed, he's got why would
- 49:17Speaker 1: he want to do anything? But um, hey, litter, you
- 49:23Speaker 1: also what he wanted. So you would you go back
- 49:28Speaker 1: in there as soon as you possibly could and get
- 49:30Speaker 1: set up on that corridor somehow that's gonna be. So
- 49:34Speaker 1: let's say, like I said, it's let's say it's a
- 49:35Speaker 1: four day window. Let's say he's on two day two.
- 49:39Speaker 1: You have to get on you have to be on
- 49:41Speaker 1: that trail um that that doll is using, and he
- 49:44Speaker 1: will be following up not far behind. So uh and
- 49:47Speaker 1: if you miss that, you miss it. If he breeds her,
- 49:49Speaker 1: then he's off running somewhere else and he's not on
- 49:52Speaker 1: that spot, and he just that's the rut is just
- 49:55Speaker 1: a it's a it's a total luck and and percentage
- 50:00Speaker 1: game and it really is. And in the favor of
- 50:05Speaker 1: a guy the hunter, you know. Mostly that's why most
- 50:07Speaker 1: of these guys don't the rut because you can you
- 50:09Speaker 1: can get out there and get a crack every day
- 50:12Speaker 1: bucks that are traveling, there's not you know, I'm just
- 50:15Speaker 1: more tuned the one that I want. But if I
- 50:18Speaker 1: had to feed my family or just get a deer, um,
- 50:22Speaker 1: I think I mentioned me many times of a buff
- 50:24Speaker 1: that will get up and I'll go buy you know,
- 50:25Speaker 1: ten or six different seven different different sets on the
- 50:29Speaker 1: property and one night where before you can get it.
- 50:32Speaker 1: You can get them to go by one. Yeah, as
- 50:35Speaker 1: all spots. So it's really um best for if you
- 50:40Speaker 1: want to fill tag and harvest um. And it's probably
- 50:43Speaker 1: your best bet for the buck of your life too
- 50:45Speaker 1: because at that time of year, some of them deer
- 50:48Speaker 1: that you know, how the big deer are there. Um,
- 50:51Speaker 1: they don't move a lot. They're they're hung up in
- 50:53Speaker 1: their own area. There's solitary you don't make a lot
- 50:55Speaker 1: of you know. And now they're up playing and getting
- 50:59Speaker 1: stupid and doing stuffy shouldn't be doing so their their
- 51:01Speaker 1: their guards. They're leaving herself wide open, you know, So
- 51:04Speaker 1: it would be your it'd be into your advantage to
- 51:08Speaker 1: be in the woods every freaking minute you could at
- 51:10Speaker 1: that time of year. And and is that what it
- 51:13Speaker 1: looks like for you? I think I remember hearing something
- 51:16Speaker 1: at some point that you don't like to hunt all day,
- 51:18Speaker 1: or you're used to, but don't anymore. Is that right?
- 51:21Speaker 1: I can't hunt all day? That's just too long about
- 51:23Speaker 1: you know. It's it's one thing if you go on
- 51:25Speaker 1: a hunt. Here's the big dilemma. With all my own
- 51:28Speaker 1: farm here and run a business and half farming. If
- 51:33Speaker 1: I was away for a week and just hunting, I
- 51:39Speaker 1: could sit the whole day, but I'd never sit in
- 51:40Speaker 1: the same stand a whole day. I would sit in
- 51:42Speaker 1: three three different spots throughout the day to break it up. Um,
- 51:48Speaker 1: but a lot of time, you know, those spots to
- 51:50Speaker 1: these all day hunts. I could tell you that the
- 51:52Speaker 1: two or three hour window you're gonna see your damn
- 51:54Speaker 1: deer on that whole day sit. And I used to
- 51:56Speaker 1: tell him about it at all the time, as you know,
- 51:58Speaker 1: he's he said, all freaking day, I see my action
- 52:01Speaker 1: and then uh early and late, and he see just
- 52:06Speaker 1: one set of action too during the day. So um,
- 52:09Speaker 1: but this rut time, those they are they get up
- 52:12Speaker 1: and they're moving. Even when the doose are better, they're searching,
- 52:15Speaker 1: they're they're just they're just traveling a lot more so
- 52:17Speaker 1: it's it really is to your advantage to um to
- 52:21Speaker 1: be in there. And I get down way too early,
- 52:23Speaker 1: and a lot of that. A lot of times some
- 52:25Speaker 1: bucks will let those dogs go back to bed everything,
- 52:27Speaker 1: let us settle down, and that's when they get up
- 52:29Speaker 1: and start shagging and running big, you know, big miles
- 52:34Speaker 1: and putting some miles on to look for for dolls,
- 52:36Speaker 1: going to heat if they haven't got one already, you know. Yeah.
- 52:39Speaker 1: So do you ever hunt midday anymore? Is that something
- 52:42Speaker 1: you ever tried keying on somewhere? Yeah? When I do?
- 52:45Speaker 1: And oh it's good that I lost the point of
- 52:46Speaker 1: that is that when you're hunting out of your own home,
- 52:50Speaker 1: you know how it is, there's something always comes up.
- 52:52Speaker 1: You're trying to do something a little bit before you.
- 52:54Speaker 1: I just think we are right now, we're trying to
- 52:55Speaker 1: get this podcast on. So we both get in the
- 52:56Speaker 1: woods right then. I gotta run their shop. I gotta
- 52:59Speaker 1: do was some you know, see what they're doing there
- 53:01Speaker 1: and making sure they're building the right stuff. And then um,
- 53:04Speaker 1: you just get you're you're not really hunting full full scale.
- 53:08Speaker 1: Your you're juggling stuff where if you're out on a
- 53:11Speaker 1: hunt or um just strictly they're hunting what's in somebody's peace,
- 53:15Speaker 1: and you're you're spending your whole time doing that. You
- 53:17Speaker 1: got a lot more effective. But to get to that point,
- 53:20Speaker 1: if the moon face says activity at twelve thirty in
- 53:24Speaker 1: the afternoon, like when I used in October, I'd said
- 53:27Speaker 1: I'd be taking corn out or my crops out, um,
- 53:31Speaker 1: and you know I'd have to unload trucks at primetime
- 53:34Speaker 1: in the evening, or you do want to get going
- 53:36Speaker 1: right away in the morning. I could dive out for
- 53:38Speaker 1: an hour and a half in midday and get a
- 53:40Speaker 1: get a little sit in or something like that. So, um,
- 53:44Speaker 1: it's just a long that's a long day. In one stand,
- 53:47Speaker 1: I've never been real patient. Um, you'll be able to
- 53:51Speaker 1: doing that. I always thought it was more beneficial to
- 53:52Speaker 1: get down and look around them. It was to sit. Um,
- 53:56Speaker 1: scout scout scout hunt. You know, so you've mentioned the
- 54:00Speaker 1: moon phase. This is something that I know you've You've
- 54:03Speaker 1: put a lot of weight behind over the years. We
- 54:07Speaker 1: didn't really touch on it in our previous conversation. Can
- 54:09Speaker 1: you can you walk me through what it is you're
- 54:12Speaker 1: king in on when it comes to the moon phase
- 54:15Speaker 1: or times, um, and how that changes your strategy the general. UM,
- 54:20Speaker 1: So I don't ever let it be an excuse for
- 54:23Speaker 1: not getting the woods, and I probably use it for
- 54:25Speaker 1: an excuse to stay a little longer or you know.
- 54:28Speaker 1: So so if I hunt and I traditionally get down
- 54:30Speaker 1: at nine thirty or ten earlier in October and it
- 54:33Speaker 1: says that you know there's gonna be activity at ten thirty,
- 54:38Speaker 1: I'll sit the extra hour, um and watch it. But
- 54:42Speaker 1: traditionally you're, um, you're deeral move and they move a
- 54:46Speaker 1: little later every day, a little later every day, so
- 54:48Speaker 1: you can kind of follow that around, and it's, uh,
- 54:51Speaker 1: you know, you're you're back, you're doing your fireman and
- 54:54Speaker 1: you're seeing dear mid day because that's the time they're
- 54:58Speaker 1: up in moving mid day. But you're doing what you're doing.
- 55:00Speaker 1: You know, you only got time to hunt in the morning.
- 55:01Speaker 1: So it's, um, it's a little frustrating that I almost
- 55:05Speaker 1: wish I didn't know about that, because it's like dam
- 55:07Speaker 1: I wasted my time here today or I should I, um,
- 55:11Speaker 1: you know, do that or sleep in and go out
- 55:13Speaker 1: a little bit later. And just the day you do that,
- 55:15Speaker 1: it ends up costing you big. So um hunt as
- 55:19Speaker 1: budget you can, as often as you can. You can't
- 55:23Speaker 1: kill him from you know. Yeah, I'm a tractor in
- 55:26Speaker 1: the hall. So true. And and the moon when you
- 55:29Speaker 1: said when the moon times tells you to you know,
- 55:32Speaker 1: stay a little later or something, am I right in that?
- 55:35Speaker 1: The moon information you're paying attention to. You look at
- 55:38Speaker 1: the red moon days right, the dial that just follow
- 55:42Speaker 1: So before even the moon charts, I got animal his
- 55:46Speaker 1: dials that I've been following. Um uh that all that
- 55:50Speaker 1: Murray studies they did. And traditionally what I found before
- 55:53Speaker 1: even that is the closer to full moon, the later
- 55:57Speaker 1: to deer move when it gets full moon. They just
- 55:59Speaker 1: moved late, and they're they're coming out after dark. But
- 56:02Speaker 1: traditionally on that then your mornings are better late morning.
- 56:08Speaker 1: So in the morning when you get in and go
- 56:09Speaker 1: hunt right at the sun up, a lot of those
- 56:11Speaker 1: they are betted and they're not up there moving yet.
- 56:13Speaker 1: And everybody that's fun it has seen that you'll go
- 56:16Speaker 1: in sometimes I can go in. I go in to
- 56:18Speaker 1: the center of my property because it's the only way
- 56:20Speaker 1: I can go in through a bunch of fields. And
- 56:23Speaker 1: I could travel this whole property and not see a
- 56:25Speaker 1: deer up on its feet anywhere near the corn any
- 56:28Speaker 1: of the fields, get into my stand and it ship
- 56:32Speaker 1: won't happen fill nine o'clock, you know, it just it
- 56:35Speaker 1: just is not. And then there's other times that you'll
- 56:36Speaker 1: go and you'll blow forty deer on the land because
- 56:39Speaker 1: they're they are up feeding at that time early in
- 56:41Speaker 1: the morning, right at sun up and then heading back in.
- 56:43Speaker 1: So you can kind of you can kind of use
- 56:47Speaker 1: that as a guideline too when the most activity is
- 56:51Speaker 1: that maybe hot to get in a little different or
- 56:53Speaker 1: use it to whatever advantage you can. You know you can, um,
- 56:57Speaker 1: you can use it too. So UM, but one thing
- 57:01Speaker 1: is that's usually on feeding and you've gotta be also
- 57:04Speaker 1: smart about it that. Um the rut and big deer
- 57:09Speaker 1: activity is totally different from this has nothing to do
- 57:12Speaker 1: with feeding patterns. It's got nothing to do with anything
- 57:14Speaker 1: but checking order and ruts. So, uh, you still have
- 57:19Speaker 1: that information. But uh, some of these deer is big
- 57:23Speaker 1: deer out moving around because not because the moon face
- 57:27Speaker 1: says they should be on feeding. It's because they're going
- 57:29Speaker 1: checking scrapes or making scrapes, you know, early October and
- 57:33Speaker 1: maintaining a scrape line or things of that nature too. So, um,
- 57:37Speaker 1: you gotta take that all into count you know. Yeah.
- 57:39Speaker 1: So basically, once you get to this part of the
- 57:41Speaker 1: year and into November, there's there's bigger forces at play.
- 57:46Speaker 1: It's kind of what you're saying, yeah, yeah, so um
- 57:49Speaker 1: yeah you wanna um E said that bucks are up
- 57:52Speaker 1: and they're moving. They're moving just about all data. They're
- 57:58Speaker 1: still bedding somewhere here or that, but they're so um
- 58:04Speaker 1: they can come through anywhere at any time. So so
- 58:08Speaker 1: here's a very specific scenario for you that I actually
- 58:12Speaker 1: encountered recently and I'm just kind of curious how you
- 58:15Speaker 1: would think about it. Um. Basically, there's a I spotted
- 58:20Speaker 1: a buck that I think it was a very brief sighting, um,
- 58:24Speaker 1: just a flash, but I think it was a target buck.
- 58:27Speaker 1: But he was doing something that I wouldn't expect him
- 58:30Speaker 1: to do. He was heading kind of into a little, tiny,
- 58:33Speaker 1: little little betting pocket, like a quarter acre little pocket,
- 58:38Speaker 1: um where it was next to a dirt field that
- 58:41Speaker 1: got disked under. It's not where the really good stuff is,
- 58:44Speaker 1: So we went. He dove into this little tiny pocket
- 58:47Speaker 1: on an evening hunt. While I would have thought that
- 58:51Speaker 1: if he was going anywhere, he'd be going to another
- 58:53Speaker 1: part of the property that I could also see where
- 58:57Speaker 1: they're cutting the corn right now. So this there I'm
- 59:00Speaker 1: looking at is okay. I know that with the corn
- 59:02Speaker 1: being cut right now, that most every day is gonna
- 59:05Speaker 1: be flocking to that cut corn field. So you would
- 59:08Speaker 1: think that the best place would be would be somewhere
- 59:11Speaker 1: near that. But you just had this sighting of a
- 59:14Speaker 1: buck year after on the other side, UM going into
- 59:17Speaker 1: a random place that you wouldn't have thought to hunt
- 59:20Speaker 1: except for the fact that you just saw him there.
- 59:22Speaker 1: Would you hunt the random spout where you just saw him,
- 59:24Speaker 1: or would you say, and that was probably a fluke,
- 59:26Speaker 1: I should focus on the spot where probably he'll be
- 59:30Speaker 1: absolutely And I always go with what what my eyes
- 59:34Speaker 1: have seen and told me, and not what preconceived perfect
- 59:38Speaker 1: scenarios and conditions are. I've found so many huge books
- 59:42Speaker 1: that hundreds of years ago um in Wisconsin, and spots
- 59:47Speaker 1: just like that, heavy plowed fields you could barely walk
- 59:51Speaker 1: across them in a bucket. Go better than spots, and
- 59:53Speaker 1: nobody's just to walk to that little stick of the
- 59:58Speaker 1: brush out there. You'd break your ankles trying to get
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: to there. Uh. Now, if do you think he was
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: diving in there too, bed that he was just gonna
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: go in there and that's where he was gonna lay low?
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: Or did you think he was just traveling from playing
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: to point B or I mean, that's that's the thing is.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: It's hard to say because he was leaving where I
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: thought his traditional betting or would be, and he was
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: and this is in the this is like an hour
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: more than an hour before dark in the evening, and
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: so he's leaving the main betting area and was going
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: into this little tiny kind of secondary dough betting area.
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: So my thought was that if if that was actually him,
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: like I think it was, maybe he was just checking
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: out one of these little tiny dough pockets and then
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: circling down the next day. I would have been ant
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: set up in that little low thicket for him maybe
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: to do that same thing. Maybe that's the route he's
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: taken from, maybe that's not his territory. Other way, all
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: that prime shouldn't he has to go to that little
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: plot across another plowed field into another whole area. Was
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: where his travel is going out at night that way, um,
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: and that's a little stepping stone to get there. So um,
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: if you thought he was betting there, you can actually
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: just go blow him out of there too in the
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: middle of day and see if feels he was betting
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: an earn held up or and then a spot like
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: that too. Sometimes you don't want to hunt him where at.
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: You want hunt where you're going. So um, you know,
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: maybe you leave. That's not gonna be a good deal
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: for you to go across that ploid field and there's
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: not enough in there a set of stand If you've
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: seen where he came out, you get on the edge
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: of that and you wait for him to make that
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: move and had that direction again, and you can go
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: over on a plouid field where you've seen him come out,
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: go over there and take a look and see the
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: tracks he left behind. If there's three or four sets
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: of him going that way, he's doing that pretty damn consistently,
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: and you know that you've you've found something that nobody
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: else is gonna even think. You got the honey hole. Man,
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: he just got you know, um there it's it's been
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: keyed up for you already to go do it. So yeah, yeah,
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: I'm gonna that that that's that happened last night. So
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: I'm I'm going out there tonight and uh and gonna
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: gonna go over to that spot where I saw him, because,
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: like you said, even though it doesn't make a whole
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: lot of sense, it seems like you shouldn't you should
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: here's the worst what's the way worse? Nay, And you
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: sit on the field edge he comes out again, and
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: that's not worst case. It's probably best cage and you
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: kill it the damn thing going out. You sit there
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: and you don't see him come out that way tonight,
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: and then you get down, or before you go, I
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: would even look around and check them tracks. You get
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: it pretty excited if you see that there's a trail
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: actually started on the beginning of that beat PLoud Field
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: and he's said in that way, and now you know
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: you've got him coming that way. Now you're just gonna
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: be concerned that he gets out there early enough where
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: I think it's getting to where they're moving a little
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: worse right now. By if I recall, Um, it's like
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: getting later and later. But uh, you know, you learn something,
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: you sit it, and you take a shot at it.
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: That's a worth kill one. So would you rather be
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: sitting there at a chance at that or on a
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: busy field with a shipload of dolls and small box
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: and um having a good old time looking at all
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: that action or yeah, or getting out to where you
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: want what you want sit or look you know, Yeah, Yeah,
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: that's that seems to be the thing to do. So
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: it seems like it's either going to be one of
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: those sits where I see nothing or I see the
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: one I want and and I guess when you're after
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: a buck like that, that's what you gotta do. Yeah,
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: And there's nothing wrong with see a day or somethhere
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: you learn something new. Or yeah, I want to I
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: want to rewind the tape just a little bit back
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: to a foul up question I had when it comes
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: to the buck locked on a dough situation, because this
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: is this is something I want to make sure recovered.
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: You talked about the fact that when you see that,
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: you should move right in there into that whatever that
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: most likely travel corridors for that dough and be there
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: to hopefully intercept them coming back or forth, um again
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: the next day. But how long will you how long
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: would you give us about like that? Would you say
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: just the next day or would you give it a
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: couple of days because it might be two or three
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: days there together. That's ah. Um. If it's like I
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: said to rub on a trail, that's a I mean,
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: it's happening right then and there. It's you know, you're
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: you're doing that, You're you're setting up, you're hunting right
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: you know. It's almost like there isn't a delayed time
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: to us. So there you're like that, you're not getting
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: um times of the essence. You know. Once once he
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: breathes that dough and it's he'll take her out somewhere
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: that um, nobody's getting to an other bucks and other
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: people and a breeder. It's and it's over. So you
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: just you capitalize on sign as quick as you can,
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: just like you did there. You're seeing something, you move
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: on it now tonight. Then you see something else from there,
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: you move on. You don't you don't backpedal, and you
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: don't wait. Um uh. You want to be on a
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: red hot sign, purchase it you'll you'll be in the game,
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: UM like you've never been before. You your opportunities and
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: your chances are just gonna start going up for you. UM,
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: I'm seeing it on a page do I'm reading stories
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: from guys Deppen him hauling around for ten years, six years.
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: They got mobile, they got aggressive, they went in and
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: they got a freaking done. Um. You know what's your
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: level of aggression. It's it's hunting and you know, go
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: hunt them down. And UM, you're literally like a world
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: hunting them down. And your stand is your set up
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: at the point that you're gonna you're you're gonna try
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: and ambush. I mean, also stick with the hot sign
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: and keep keep going. You're good percentages will be away
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: in your favor than just now. Are guys that got
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: there old. You know, I sit back and wait until
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: the ship hits the fans that I go on that
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: you know that's fine for you if that's what works
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: for you, um, or you know you got um whatever
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: scenario would be. You know you got this perfect stand.
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: You need this perfect wind to hunt the spot. So
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: the spot's red hunting red hot, and you're not getting
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: the perfect wind, why not take a portable and going
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: to manipulate that spot right now it's red hot, instead
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: of waiting for the ship to peter out and missed
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: the boat. It doesn't make any never made any sense
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: to me from from day one. Soul Um. You know
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: I heard you. I can't remember where I saw this,
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: but you were talking about this idea of finding a
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: red hot spot like that. But you mentioned that a
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: mistake a lot of people make is that they're afraid
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: to over hunt a spot like that. So the hunted
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: a day and then they think, oh, well, the first
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: hunt's done. Uh, I should go somewhere else, But you
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: said that, no, Um, you need to keep pounding it
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: because if you leave, it's gonna fizzle out. Um, you
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: hunt it while it's hot. That's so, that's traditionally October
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: hunts earlier. You know, your best time in is your
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: first crack. Uh. Then you've kind of polluted a little bit,
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: you kind of Um, Um, I got a deer to
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: one one up. But when you start getting more towards
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: the rock and all that, and you get this, you
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: get a spot that's like a freaking zoo. None of
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: them dear to give a shot anymore. They're gonna. They're
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: just they're running. And it's where you would watch those
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: I would check trails up and up in Wisconsin and Nicola,
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: I had open hardwoods i'd hunted, and there's a faint
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: trail that would go around the edge of the swamp
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: on the edge of the um the hardwoods and where
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: the traditional betting was. And I remember every year I
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: would just be anxious. I always go over and look
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: at that trail, and I go over there and look
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: at that trail. And then one day I go over
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: look in that trail and overnight the thing is just
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: beat the freaking mud. It looks like a all of
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: them deer running that trail. It's the same amount of
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: deer running that trail and they're just running back and
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: forth up and pretty rough before that rock where and
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: they're just it's it's red hot. Everything's happening. Time to
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: sit that trail. But get on there and and stay
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: on it because it's um you know. Like I said,
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: I've gone on bump bucks that seeing me bump them
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: and came right back. They don't give a shoot. So
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: hunt it well. It's hot, and when it fizzles out,
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: then then move them. We'll find the next hot spot. Um,
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: and so when all the time, yeah, you know you're
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: gonna you're gonna capitalize. So when you say fizzle out,
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: basically you mean don't stop hunting that spot until you
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: stop seeing the deer you're interested in. If you're sitting there,
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: and if it's been three days, they keep seeing it,
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: still using it, you hunt it and all of a sudden,
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: now you know, the next day comes around and the
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: deer don't show and they move or whatever, then then
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: you get done and start poking around again, go go
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: after a middle Yeah, now what about We kind of
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: talked about some specific situations related to hunting the rut
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: with lockdown doors or hunting those evening sits by food sources.
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: But what about mornings Because for a lot of people,
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: mornings are what people think of is like your us
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: to run opportunity that because late morning movement and cruising
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: and chasing, and where are the spots you're focusing on
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: for the first part of the day during these November hunts.
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: So if it's uh that time of year, and like
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: I mentioned, you have traditional spots that are good that
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: you've so, um, if I mind my farm here everywhere
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: I got stand set in these certain areas. It's in
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: the perfect spot for certain wins, um, sometimes for multiple wins.
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: But if there's a deer traveling through there, you can
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: get them shot there. Um. So you're gonna start now,
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: you're gonna start, just start balancing around. You're gonna hope
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: if it's still a deer that you're looking to get,
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: you're gonna hope it's gonna be luck that he just
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: happens to come through there. Now that spot that day, um,
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: for whatever reason it is, it's not pattern, but you
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: have a spot that you know it's good that you
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: know you can get ship killed. It's a good set
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: clean um, a good opportunity it comes through there. And
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: if it doesn't, you could try and sit that again.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: It's like rolling the dice or you jump to the
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: next spot that's really good um and hot and you
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: go you go sit and you said that, and you
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: just start bounce around and you see something you like
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: and if you see something you can slide over the
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: portable or um, what are these what are these spots? Though? Yeah,
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: because you're saying that you're hunting a traditionally good spot
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: that is safe from a win perspective. It kind of
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: makes me think, like you're saying like therese are pinch
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: points or you know, so let me tell you what
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: I think about pinch points. Dear, no pinch points there
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: live there and know it's a pinch point that there
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: there's a So when I hunt those most spots, I
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: kind of like to sit out where I can cover
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: anything getting through a pinch point, cause sometimes geographically they
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: have to go through the spots, and I don't think
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: do you really like to do that? Um? I think
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: the guard gets up on that. So and let's just
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: the rock. It's deer that never been through there before,
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: don't know the area, good flying, But um, I'm more hunting,
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: you know, specific early it don't then start your tough
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: got an open gate that the deer can walk right through,
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: and then the big buck just jumps the fence forty
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: down froment and cuts it short and doesn't go through it.
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: You know, I just, um, not a big fan. But
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: the g you know, I got areas here that are
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: big draws on both sides that or maybe a hundred
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: yard to cross. If a deer is coming through there,
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: it's got to come through from one room wall to
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: the other. Um, and I have those spots where over
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: the years I watch and I see how the deer
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: moved through them, and somebody's bucks will climb up a
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: mountain like you won't believe, cross the bottom and climb
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: up another mountain on the other side. But over the
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: years you'll notice that all the biggest deer seem to
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: do the same thing in that area. So you you
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: set up a stand for that spot, and if a
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: big buck is traveling through there that day, whatever big
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: bucket is you're set up from, you know, you get
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: your crack at them. Um, how about this uh situation
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: like that. Let's say we we've found a spot like this,
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: it's and we've we've we've never hunted in there, but
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: we've seen this big I don't know, big oak that's
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: in the middle of what's obviously a betting area. And
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: over the years you've you've seen big bucks past this
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: tree over and over and for whatever reason, you never
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: hunted there. But well, let's say the reason why you
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: never hunted there is because it's like smack dab in
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: the middle of the bedding and there's no doesn't sound
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: like a very good Yeah, it sounds't gonna get one
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: good hunt of that, and then the jinx is gonna
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: be up and every freaking deer that comes through here's
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: gonna all um So that was so would you just
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: never hunted or do you know if if I've seen
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: a big deer going by there, I would go take
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: my one crack at it right and um uh. And
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: it could be a spot that throwing the rut dear
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: travel through that. There might be every week or every day.
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: It could be a different buck going through there. That's
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: you're getting a fresh ambush on them. What trisially happens
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: to spot like that when you hunt them early, then
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: big alpha dos we'll learn that that's a tree that's
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: being hunt out of it, and they will really be
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: um cautious on coming through. I had it this morning.
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: I'm gonna this is the most phenomenal little spot where
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: they trickled through and by to go to bedding, and
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: the deer kind of no. I dropped my hat, I
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: believe it or not. And I always carry an extra hat,
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: so climbing alway on a tree, I put another one on.
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: But these big alpha dolls where they would have traditionally
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: just came through, I'm hunting on the right wind. I'm
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: really careful about what I do there. Um, I don't
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: have anybody else not all spots they get through and
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: go about their business. Bucks will follow through. But now
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: because there's a freaking hat land there and they're getting
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: a little sent from down although as you know, they
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: stop start looking around, looking up in the tree at you,
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: and just um and all of a sudden, you know,
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: they learned that that's an ambush spot in that big
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: Mama's in a show. Every other doll coming through that
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: stay away from that tree, slide over here, and then
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: you're ruining a you're ruining a really good spot. And also, um,
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: you gotta be careful on not scenarios like that. So yeah,
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: So if you had let's say a week let's say
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: we're in a weeklong rut vacation and you've got an
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: area like this where you know there's a spot in
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: the middle that's amazing, but you also know what you
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: just described. If you go in there, a lot of
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: deer gonna wind you. Um. So if you've got a
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: seven day run hunt, would you hunt the edges of
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: the downward edges of the area and and just wait
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: until the last day or something. I was still up
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: for a good set. I wouldn't go all that because
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: you know, you screw up the doll that's coming through first,
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: and and the money loads what's after her. So you
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: you still got to be able to have a good
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: clean set where deer can get through there. Would I'll
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: be a molested not knowing they're being hunted to get
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: your crack at a um. You know that big deer.
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: If you start educating every doll that's in there that
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: you're in that tree and they start staying away from
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: it or creating all kinds of havoc, it's not a
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: good deal, soul Um. Some of them spots are just
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: not vulnerable, brother, or they're just there's not the timber there.
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: But traditionally I'll get in some pretty small little trees,
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: reggae trees on the edge of that. And and you've
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: heard the term. I think I've heard. I know I
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: read that before it was Bill Winky wrote an article
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: about hunting the fringe. You don't whatever really want to
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: be in the midst of the pot. You want to
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: be in all the chast that goes on. It's even
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: though they're traveling like a main trail. Just think all
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: of the interactions and the walking off to the right
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: as rail and the left the trail on the bullshits
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: it goes on. You want to kind of be on
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: a on the fringe of that where you can get
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: the job done but not not really mess it up,
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: you know. Um, Like, I had a uh, some guys
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: that told about a good spot once and there was
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: like three trails that branched off and they were sitting
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: in the in the middle trail. They set up on him, like,
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: what the frick are you doing? There's there's never gonna
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: be a scenario that that's gonna be good. There's gonna
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: be something down when you off the side. Every time
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: get off the side, way off the side of one
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: or three, and the ones that are on the fire
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: trail you you don't get. But everything coming through a
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: trail one and two you get. And then the opposite
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: you know, when you go on the other side and
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: you hunt it, you're parking a fricki permanence stand the
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: middle of that. You just probably ruined that spot for
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: antibody else for the future. Um, you know, it doesn't
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: make a lot of sense. So I think allot of
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: it's this common sense with yeah, well, it's easy to
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: get stuck in overthinking these things sometimes and and yeah,
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: you just gotta focused on the basics and that'll usually
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: do it for you. You you mentioned the funnel thing.
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: I want to dive a little bit more into that.
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: You said that you feel like sometimes he's deer feel
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: uncomfortable being in these funnels. I just I don't know,
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: I just never really liked so is there So if
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: that's the case, then my question is is there any
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: type of funnel that you do still like to hunt?
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: Is there something I like him? But I don't sit
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: smack dab in the middle of that. I'm off where
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: it widens out and the opportunity is. So let's say
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: you get an opportunity at the deer before it gets
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: to be unfocused, or you get the opportunity at the
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: deer after he's made it through the Leary's own and
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: he thinks he's home free, so you're kind of again
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: on a fringe instead a right smack dab in the
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: middle of Tell's gate, you know, just so, not at
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: the narrowest point, more at the top of the kind
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: of situation. And you'll notice someone in them dear. You know,
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: they crawl up on some goofy I ship that you
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: you know, they take it wide or they take it
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: so um, but it's so Yeah. It's interesting how sometimes
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: you find the sweet spot the wind's right and everything
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: it's in right area, and it's just just like taking
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: cane from a baby. And other spots they are spot
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: they're just um, not honible, and you really can't learn
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: a lot of them until you get in there, and you,
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: especially on a new set, you do all education you
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: can and what you've known about thermals and about wind
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: direction and everything, and it almost it takes a sit
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: to learn. I mean, I've said it and I thought, man,
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: it should work, and it's like, man, there's just no
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: way you can ever get away with nothing here. It's
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: I love to be here. I'd love to park it
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: here and have a permanent here, but UM's just not
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: in the cards, you know. That's that's gotta takes some
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: discipline though, to inexperience, of course, but to be in
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: a spot that looks great and feels great, but then
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: you see, oh, ship, it's not It's not what I
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: was hoping it would be. A lot of people would
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: just stick with it and think, well, maybe I've just
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: gotten lucky. Maybe it'll be better next time. So that's
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: set the other day for the scrape. That's right in
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: the right in the bottom. So and this is so here,
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: just thick of this. You're you're in a colosseum and
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: you're in the bottom of it, and all the deer
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: are better than a rim. I mean, that's some crazy
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: ship to be watching. You go to your ship. So
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: I take the creet bottom and I take the lay
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: at the land, and there I get gets set and
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: I know what the wind does. No matter what the
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: wind does direction wise, it doesn't matter when it gets
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: into these draws, even though it might be a north
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: If it hits the draw that's running a little bit
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: one direction, and the winds coming down the draw. So
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: I got a flank trail that's gonna be my bad trail.
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: That's gonna if something comes up. I'm screwed with the wind.
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: But I see there's another big valley off to the left,
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: and I can't even see what my wind bottle. But
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: I know from experience there's an to be a flow
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: of air coming down that draw, and the wind coming
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: down the draw to my right, it's gonna hit that
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: flow of air and lo and behold, I had the
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: one buck that I got all the video on working
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: the scrape come down that and I'm like, the sun
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: of a bitch is gonna you know, is he gonna
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: get me? And he did not have a fricking clue,
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: and the wind was going right right at him, but
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: I think it was hitting that that wall of win directually.
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: I worked perfect. And then I knew the wind was
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: gonna die down and I'm on a creek edge where
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: I'm on the ledge of it and all the therminals
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: are going to just fall into the creek bottom and
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: flow away, And I mean I could have killed the
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: deer um and everything worked out perfect. So now I
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: know a spot that's hot. It's a red hot spot.
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: If a big deer is there next year, it will
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: be a good spot. And I have a tree I
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: know that works for a certain wind northeast, and I'm goals.
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: You know, I might go down there on the northwest
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: and something might be a little different. Um. So it's
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: it's you know that kind of your's a trial and
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: error that you learn stuff like that. So he's speaking
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: the thermal and weird little wind things like that. But
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: you mentioned how your thermals would drove to the creek
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: and then just follow the creek out. Um, do you
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: see that happening just in a location like where you
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: were at there, where you're in the bottom of a
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: big you know draw or will that even happen in
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: flat country? If I'm in flat country and I'm next
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: to a creek in the evening, life fades. So if
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: if the creeks running cricks, obviously it's it's gotta be
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: running there, so I gotta be some great to it
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: for it to be running downhill. So in a perfect
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: scenario on a creek setting, you want to be on
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: the down current side because that's where let's say everything
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: goes just dead com for your setup. If you're up
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: that creek, your sense gonna slowly fall to the ground,
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: and it's gonna slowly fall the direction that the water
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: is running. So uh. In the thermals, it's a powerful
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: blob of air that just moves a little bit of
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: a gust here, a little bit of a gust there.
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: It doesn't do shipped to that massive movement of air
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: moving that way. So you're any and I hunt these
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: field edges that are all everything is coming down no
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: matter what happens. I can't get on the opposite of
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: the field because even when the wind is right for
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: that towards dusk, it's all heading across the field. So
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: now I'm sitting on the opposite side where you think
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: the wind was wrong, and I'm playing that thermal against
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: the wind and the thermals beating the ship out the wind,
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: and I'm getting a with murder. Nobody in the right
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: mind is gonna think I'm going to sitting on that
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: side right now because the winds blowing into the field.
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: It's really not the wind is blowing through the field,
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: but the massive air is going the opposite way, and
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: as it bumps and it grabs that, it slowly goes
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: the right. Then again, did not get I've been getting
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: really good at they should for the last Year's almost
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: surprising myself sometimes with what if you can get them
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: spots figured out for it win direction of thermal and stuff.
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: You're gold man, you can. You don't need anything else,
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: but just don't let any of that air mass hit
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: them there, and you're you should be good to go.
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: And that just comes with experience probably or keep traling error.
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: And I've had spots that you go three ft higher
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: in a tree stand and the winds going in opposite
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: direction you go a little bit lower. Um it's it's
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: I don't select set some engineers, it's about the errors
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: to do what it's gonna do, and it's you don't
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: know what the hell is hitting on the way through
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: all those um draws and rocks and timber and stuff.
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: So some trial and error. But yeah, I guess that's
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: all you can do is get out there, try things,
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: learn from learn from it, and keep trying. So to
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: think about it, always think of this, where would I
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: want my cent to go? In a perfect scenario, where
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: would I like the scent to go? The other night,
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: I want I'd love this scent just so I come
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: off the flat and I'm a little bit of a
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: hill toward the creek, so my sense starts settling. It's
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: not settling on the flat, it's it's on that angle
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: going down, and I want that scent just to slowly
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: pour down to the creek and then just flow that
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: direction with all the other air masks that's going there.
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: And it just it worked out perfect that's exactly what
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: it what it did once once the wind stopped blowing,
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: and then then thermals all tooked over. Um. It was
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: like I said, it's it's an excellent spot. Now now
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: the morning hunt will be a whole another animal. You know,
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: it's um. Now it's a totally different deal there. So
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: uh again, I'd have to probably hunt that, and I
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: probably set up different note on the more. Anyhow, I
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: would get up on a rim and get up a
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: little higher what it's carrying out. So so let's jump
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: a little bit back from the wind thing and back
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: to just standard hunting the rut in November. We we we
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: talked a little bit about what you're thinking when food sources.
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: We talked a little about what you're thinking about for
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: those morning hunts, pinch points, um, We've talked some about
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: betting areas. Does this change at all as the month
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: of November progresses? Is there something different you're doing mid
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: November versus the very first few days versus the last week. Yeah.
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: So let's say the ruts pretty much cooked. A lot
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: of those are bread and then you have these I
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: think traditionally a big run hunters say that that's really
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: your chance that your biggest deer that they'll these big
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: bucks are all welling up and there they're gonna go start.
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: Now they're gonna travel big, vast amounts of distance looking
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: for sub scribblers that they can get. Um. Now, you
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: got a deer that's coming through a property that's not
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: on all the little intricate as raw as this, where
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: that we got big big ravines or big crick bottoms
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: that come up with with the cliffs on both sides.
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: For that week, you'll get deer that coming from who
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: knows where two miles away, and they'll just come and
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: they'll run that hole. There's actually an old logging road
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: that goes up the whole thing, and they just get
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: on that thing and they run through the whole freaking properly,
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: just traveling looking for some little you know, stragger going
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: to heat or whatever. So that's a that's a big
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: travel um. So you'll set her stands for some of
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: the intricate action coming off of those, but you'll include
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: that travel quarter toward which is normally not as great
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: in your in your package. I mean, maybe you'll slide
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: your standover so you get a little of that and
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: you get the normal movement from side to side or um.
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: Are you a spot hog or do you like to
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: sit one solid trail and just get the wind good
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: for that and hunt that wound piece or you try
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: and hog a bunch of three or four trails. Yeah,
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: it's a it's an interesting question. That's something I've been
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: kind of changing on. I used to I used to
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: try to be trying to get as many things going
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: firm as possible, but recently I've tried to switch more
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: towards what do I think is the absolute most likely
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: option and then just be perfect for that one best option.
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: What do you think? It is very tough to manage
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: it all, and as I mentioned, the worst the worst
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: spot in the world is where you freaking you can't
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: watch everything out in front of you. There could be
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: some ship behind the right or left or that is
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: an ugly situation. And I'd like to say that I
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: could I can handle those and manage them, but it's uh,
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: isn't it nice to just be down When I ought
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: to sell of a beat the ship spot where you're
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: just focused and you can sit tight and manage. So
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: there's a little both for that UM going on. I'm
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: curious how many other guys are I like to be
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: the spot hog. She'd like them the more I'm a
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: spot hog, which I still kind like to get as
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: much trampling through, but I don't get as done as
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: much as if you're just a set shot. You know,
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: you know, yeah, here it comes, twenty of your yards
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: will be twenty yards shot coming through when it's perfect,
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: you know, no scenarios and um, yeah, got nice to
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: have that role to but yeah, yeah, which which you know,
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: when it comes to betting area is another rut thing
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: that we've briefly touched on. This kind of goes back
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: to what we talked about a little earlier when it
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: comes to do you want to be right in the
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: middle of them or on the fringes? Yeah, right in
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: the middle would be where the most activity is. There's
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: stuff coming from all over the place. But if you
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: if you can't, if you can't hunt it without deer
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: know when you're there, then it's worthless. So and again,
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: you know, again, a big buckles in there and starts
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: shaking the dose around. Just I don't know if you
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: can look at it and the snow sometimes or just
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: watch it's like they cover every freaking inch that whole
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: area anyhow, So it's at some point in time they're
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: gonna we're gonna get within range where you can shoot them.
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: So let them cut their own throp by. You know,
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: how are you possibly going to sit in the middle
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: of that with them? Do you're running up, down, all
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: around backwards? You know? And what a damn dole is
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: gonna catch her or gonna go this stor um? Yeah,
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: then the jig's up and I would sit. I would
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: sit more of that that fringe it out hunt, the hunt,
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: the down wind fringe. Right? Yeah? Is there is there
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: anything else andre when it comes to the rut that
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: you're doing that that has helped you. That's that's different
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: than most folks or that you that you kind of
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: view as your secret sauce. And again, I know this
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: isn't your favorite time, but I know you've also killed
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: a lot of slammers during November. Um anything any other
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: tricks up your sleeve that we haven't touched on. Uh No,
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: it's just basically at that time, you're even you know,
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: being out there and being the most Um, I know
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: that a lot of slammers is h I almost didn't
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: get or didn't get the because I just just the
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: guy who can't sit late enough. And I do know
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: that I get down and I leave some of the
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: best hunting on the table. But it's just just the
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: way I've been hunting all my life, and it's it's
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: kind of hard to change. I know, when I hunted Illinois,
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: I had never got out there early enough. I always
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: got out there when I don't know how many times
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: I come to my stand there's a monster standing right
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: under it was on its way through that just just
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: late to the dance, you know. So um, some of
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: those spots you almost gotta be there for your evening
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: hunt at like noon, you get in a good setting.
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: I just just not accustomed to that, you know, So,
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: so put your time in right. So it's it's yeah,
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: you gotta put so most guys are, I think are.
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: But again, you can get caught up into spending too
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: much time and not being in the right spot, which
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: is I think a bigger tragedy than um not being
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: in there early enough. You know, so you're you're burned
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: in a spot just you know, you're you're putting hours
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: in it somewhere does not not the hot sign or
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: um you know, or just over the hill. If you
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: looked around a little bit to you definitely pick that spot,
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: you know, Yeah, yeah, that's a good point. That's a
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: tricky thing with a rut in, especially if you're hunting
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: a travel corridor, a pinch point type area where maybe
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: there's not a lot of maybe it's not high deer density,
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: but you know that eventually a good one should come through.
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: That's something I've struggled in certain places. You're not going
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: to see a lot of deer. But half you says,
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: all right, I should move because I'm not seeing much
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: at all. The other half of me says, well, you know,
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: if you you could sit this thing three days straight
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: and the buck you're after might not be in the
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: area at all, but on day three he will come
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: through if you just stick it out. And that's that's
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: a tough one to know if you're wasting your time
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: or biding your time. Um, and at that time of year,
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: like you said, that's it's it could happen. I made
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: us and now is a million times that I could
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: sit on the strict and telephone poll out here in
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: the road during a rug and if I sat there
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: long enough, I could shoot a good deer I actualting
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: off my porch, probably during a rug, but I just
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: don't know if I got to wear it all to
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: climb up a spot, that's just not I'm not feeling it,
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: you know. And just wait for that. I guess That's
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: what I'm saying is I'm not a very lucky guy,
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: so I like to make my own luck, and just
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: the roll advice on that, it's just not, you know.
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: And then for it's the deer that I don't know,
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: it's it doesn't make a lot of sense for me.
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: So I still rather go, you know, why not get down,
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: run a round during a run. You can wear a
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: murder during a rug. You're not messing anything up, you
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: know where you got a little little touchure in October
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: and that. So yeah, and and so tell me just
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: a little bit more. Let's wrap it up with this,
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: because this is something that I used to be me
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: personally a lot of guys, especially in higher pressure areas
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: where there's more hunters. Um, I used to be all
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: year round, just obsessed where making sure no deer ever
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: knows I'm there, and really beating myself up if if
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: a deer did win to me or something went wrong. Um,
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: even during the run. But it seems like sometimes we
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: can get away with being a little more aggressive or
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: getting away with a few bumps here there during November because,
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: like you just said, their mind is elsewhere. UM, would
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: you agree with that? You're talking about this scenario of
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: the day you hunt. But if you think that a
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: deer that when you go to a stand and you
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: hunt it and you leave it and you got away
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: with it that night, if you think them deer in
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: the middle of the night and your travels don't know
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: that something that's been there, I haven't crossed it, you're
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: always going to have UM. So in all the chaos
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: of it, um, you know, I call it the Virgin said,
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: you can mess everything up, and then in that area
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: there is a spot that you didn't mess up where
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: the sign all reads good. And you you work at
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: that point and you hunt that spot. You take a shot.
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: It's your best shot, it's your first time in. You
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: read sign, it's red hot. You can't get any better
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: than that. Then you get down and go find another
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: spot like that the next day, or another spot the
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: next day, or you know, and you keep on the
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: moving it. You know, UM, you have these spots that
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: are just prime and you get down and you go
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: to the next one. That's I mean, I think we
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: got a huntred hundred sets on this property that are all,
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: you know, in good spots if something were to be there,
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: and maybe thirty of them are really active good areas
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: yet to this day that haven't changed. But um, still
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: wonder one of those good spots, you know. Yeah, I
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: mean them those looked up at me. They knew something
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: was up on that tree. But I got the old
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: head massed down and just played played it good and
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: they didn't really get to win. And then they'll be
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: back through there again. It's just one of those spots.
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: I know. They just they just traveled through there and
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: they just um, it's really good consistent spots. So um,
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: some point being seek them out, hunt them down sometimes.
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: But if you're a the right place, um, it's you
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: can get away with a little more if if you
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: know you're the right place. Yeah, And like we go,
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: I mentioned about this property in the middle of it,
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: I have to get it out of here, and I
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: ain't walking, you know, walking three a mile and three
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: quarters back every freaking day in and out of there.
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: So these deer are accustomed to like the farmers, they're
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: accustomed to them. Bikes ripping through there, they're accustomed to
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: sometimes if you're too careful with it. Now it's a
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: different scenario. You're going out there to hunt, and now
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: it's not a norm to them to see the chaos.
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: That might be a worse scenario than you know that
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: been bedding back in there and here and you drive
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: through on your bike, that you're out there again, that's
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: you know, I don't I've never really I shouldn't say that.
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: Years ago I probably felt a victim for that. But
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: what all of scouting and the and the stuff that
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: I do is um that I've learned over the here
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: is I just it does not bother me a bit
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: too even jump a deer on the way in, or
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: um jumped the deer I'm after on the way in,
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: or or have him no one I'm hunting them. I
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: just I just don't let it bother me. So just
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: keep keep moving on him and a man, it's he's
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: only one way that you can avoid it is to
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: get the hell out of this property. Leave and a
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: big deer is there ain't no way I'm getting out
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: of the cell for this property. Leave and I own
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: this property, I live here, and I'm staying too. So
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: so let's you know, let's do the dance. Let's play that,
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: play the game, and then so who comes down on
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: the top? You know, yeah, there you go. Well, I
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: guess if if there's any kind of theme to this conversation,
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: then it's probably go just like all of your hunting.
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: It seems like really the moral of the story to
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: killing bucks or in the rut for you is to
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: find them, hunt them down, and then put in enough time,
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: keep on adjusting, and eventually good things can happen. It's
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: not rocket science. It's simply being smart and hunting hard
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: and hunt where you're at. You gotta be you where
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: they're at if you know they are what they are,
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: and if you're not, um, you might as well be
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: a million miles away if you're you know, if you're
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: ten acres off. So um, alright, Andrea, let's hope some
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: let's some slammer from like three miles away, it comes
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: over and starts to running some bulls in here here,
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: and we'll be I'll be happy if I get a
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: glimpse of one. So I hope so, well, I know
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: you want to get in the stands. So I want
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: to I want to let you go so you can
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: wrap up your other work and go find that slammer.
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: So Andrew, thank you for making the time to do
