- 0:06Hello. What's your least favorite scary
- 0:08movie? Welcome to watching at least
- 0:13Seven Scary Movie, The podcast where we talk about the good,
- 0:15the bad, the ugly and the absurd, and all of our favorite.
- 0:18And least favorite scary videos? Because we believe every horror
- 0:20movie rightfully has its fan base.
- 0:22Even if we don't always get. It my name is Travis.
- 0:24My name is Jesse and we're talking about the ruins today.
- 0:27Y'all Before that, do we have an announcement?
- 0:34We have our Patreon episode. Yes, budget to your patrons or
- 0:37folks that choose to purchase a single bonus episode.
- 0:41May do so on the Patreon. Link is at the very bottom of
- 0:44our show notes. We did a commentary track to
- 0:46Return of the Living Dead. Yeah, for the day.
- 0:49It was the return of the Living Dead day on July 3rd.
- 0:52So we did that. Yeah.
- 0:53And we did that at the exact same time that the movie starts
- 0:55too. Yeah, it's kind of cool.
- 0:57It was really fun. We had a good time with it.
- 0:59We always have a good time with that maybe though.
- 1:00So go ahead, go check that out if it interests you.
- 1:04Do we have poll results? We do.
- 1:06All right. Last week we talked about Texas
- 1:09Chainsaw Massacre, the 2003 remake and.
- 1:14Perfect chainsaw sound. I thought that that was somebody
- 1:17outside using a chainsaw. So I mean, it's an easy poll
- 1:22this week. We just did.
- 1:24Does the remake hold up for you? Has a remake.
- 1:27OK. And 71% of people say yes and
- 1:3129% say no. OK, so it does have a taters out
- 1:34there, but I do see a lot of support for that online and it's
- 1:39it seems to be true for people on our feet at least.
- 1:43OK, I I agree. I think that, I mean, obviously
- 1:45I've, I raved about that movie in our episode about I love that
- 1:49movie. I have some problems with it
- 1:51which I discussed that I think if I had to go on the binary gun
- 1:56my head choose yes or no, I'd probably choose yes.
- 1:58Yeah, I mean, I think objectively it's a good way to
- 2:01do a remake. Yeah, I, I think it did.
- 2:03I think it did OK. I think it missed some of the
- 2:05spirit of the original. Yeah, a little bit, but yeah,
- 2:09All right. Are we ready to talk about the
- 2:11ruins? Yeah, let's do it.
- 2:12I'm excited. For this, OK, so The Ruins
- 2:15premiered April 4th 2008. We actually, you know, just on a
- 2:20lark went to Half Price Books. I know, shocking from us.
- 2:23We found it on DVD so this is our first time watching the
- 2:26unrated version. Yeah, I didn't really expect
- 2:29much from that. Yes, so if you have the option
- 2:31between the R rated theatrical release or the unrated, go for
- 2:35the unrated because it adds some stuff.
- 2:38Yeah, like a lot. Like it was weird.
- 2:40We were both looking at each other like this happened.
- 2:42We. Never saw this support.
- 2:44Did the Did the lamplighter get a handjob?
- 2:46Yeah, don't remember this, did he?
- 2:47Just come, he did. But right now you could.
- 2:51If you don't own it, you can stream it on Shutter, AMC Plus,
- 2:55Sling TV Premium, Prime Premium, Final Premium, or YouTube TV
- 2:59Premium. I'm sorry, that's the that's The
- 3:00funny thing though. Like that's the thing that a lot
- 3:03of people hope for when you get unrated cut like somebody
- 3:05getting a hand job or something like that, like the sex stuff.
- 3:07And then this movie actually weirdly delivers on.
- 3:10It yeah, except like. It's not, it's not good though.
- 3:13It's not like, I mean, it's good, it's just it's not sexy.
- 3:16Yeah, I saw something online that described it as like an
- 3:19added sex scene, but an incredibly chaste sex scene
- 3:22because yeah, you see the hand, you see the motions, you see his
- 3:26face. Yeah.
- 3:27And then there's just also Amy in there with.
- 3:30Yeah, well then it cuts to Amy sitting outside like, man, this
- 3:34is, yeah, not cool. Weird.
- 3:37You can also rent it from YouTube, Google Play, Apple TV,
- 3:40or Fandango at home. Written by Scott Smith, who also
- 3:44wrote the book. Directed by Carter Smith.
- 3:47No relation music by Grim Revel. Special effects make up.
- 3:51The prosthetics supervisor was a person named Jason Baird, but we
- 3:54also got some special effects credit to Charmaine Connelly and
- 3:58Jake Garber. Starring Sean Ashmore as Eric,
- 4:02Jenna Malone as Amy, Jonathan Tucker as Jeff, Laura Ramsey as
- 4:06Stacy, and Joe Anderson as Matthias Travis.
- 4:10Time for a favorite game budget bug.
- 4:13Ted, I am going to say bug Ted. OK, even with all of those
- 4:22handmade leaves. It's a lot of leaves, yeah.
- 4:26And also like I thought about for a second too, because like.
- 4:28And all of those fake legs. And Siller was involved in the
- 4:32production too. I feel like he would throw some
- 4:33money as this type of shit. But no, I I think they still
- 4:36recognize that this is a horror movie and like, they did it
- 4:39because it's like a good return on investment.
- 4:43You are correct $8 million budget opening box office 8
- 4:46million Worldwide gross 22.8 million OK IMDb score as of now
- 4:51sits at 5.9 out of 10. Wow only 5.9?
- 4:54I know. I thought this was like a lot
- 4:56more loved by the people. I have some theories, OK, It's
- 5:01actually not really important to anything I'll discuss later.
- 5:04It's kind of important to what I'll discuss later, but I can
- 5:06point it out now. I think because the book was
- 5:09very well known and very well loved, and this came out so
- 5:13closely after the book, I think people were a little bit
- 5:16frustrated at the differences between the book and the movie.
- 5:19Well, I feel like if you have the person that wrote the book
- 5:22writing the movie, I feel like that person would know what to
- 5:26cut and what not to. I think that they're probably
- 5:29the best judge of that. Yes.
- 5:32And those are the thoughts that I'll get into in a tad.
- 5:35OK. Got you.
- 5:36OK, I pulled three other movies from 2008 and my theme is nature
- 5:42is gross and scary. Is that a theme of this time I
- 5:46guess? Guess so.
- 5:48So the first one is called the hive.
- 5:50What about nature? Do you think that's about bees?
- 5:53It is not. It's about ants.
- 5:54What I know. I had to make a special note of
- 5:57that because that shocked me. Do you ever call like a group of
- 6:01ants a hive? No, they're a colony.
- 6:03Yeah, OK, I thought that that sounded strange.
- 6:07It's very confusing. That premiered February 17th,
- 6:122008. I don't have a budgetary gross
- 6:14for it, but it's got a 3.2 out of 10 on IMDb.
- 6:18OK. Second movie.
- 6:22What it's? Also about killer plants.
- 6:25OK. That happening.
- 6:29Oh yeah, that's a great one for this right here.
- 6:32Very, very similar. That premiered June 13th, 2008.
- 6:38Budget of 48 million cuz Shyamalan worldwide gross is
- 6:42163,000,000 cuz. Shyamalan.
- 6:46Yeah, and then as an IMDb score 5.0 out of 10.
- 6:50Wow, let's go to 5. Yeah.
- 6:52Wow, I'm surprised a little bit. Don't you mean what?
- 6:56No, and the third movie Anaconda 3 offspring.
- 7:05So is snake, is nature in that Mother Nature?
- 7:09Yes, OK. Do you know who is starring in
- 7:13this one? Three.
- 7:14Yeah, it's not an ice cube, is it?
- 7:17No. No, I have no idea.
- 7:22David Hasselhoff. What the fuck?
- 7:26That doesn't make it. I don't like that that I don't
- 7:32take that movie seriously, but then again, I probably
- 7:34shouldn't. Yeah, no, it's, it's Anaconda 3,
- 7:37so. Which is the first one?
- 7:39For the first time, it wasn't as bad as you made it out to be.
- 7:42It's. So boring.
- 7:43It's OK, It's boring it's OK. So Anaconda 3 released July
- 7:4726th, 2008. We're almost at its birthday.
- 7:51I don't have a budget or a gross for it, even with the Hoff
- 7:55associated. With it, yeah, it's not much.
- 7:57Yeah, I can guarantee you that. Do you want to guess the IMDb
- 8:00score? 2.5. 2.80.
- 8:05Yeah, OK. Wow.
- 8:07OK, I've got a tackling. OK.
- 8:12Taylor has evolved. That's lame.
- 8:17It there was another book that I read, I almost said ran that I
- 8:21read around this time and it was about a kind of like a reality
- 8:27TV show but with marine biologists and they were looking
- 8:32for some island in this island was so far away from everything
- 8:35else that it evolved separately and all of the species were like
- 8:39super killer like super evolved to immediately kill everything.
- 8:44And when I hear Terror has evolved, I think of that book
- 8:47instead of this one. That sounds way more fitting,
- 8:49yeah. What exactly evolved here?
- 8:51Is it just like the? Plans I guess.
- 8:53OK, Could have done way, way better than that.
- 8:57Yeah, that's just this. That's generic for this kind of.
- 8:59Movie, Yeah. So we're gonna have to.
- 9:01We've got our work cut out for us.
- 9:03We've got nothing that we're starting from with it.
- 9:05Yeah, OK. OK, Speaking of nature evolving
- 9:10in a way that it shouldn't, this film was shot in Queensland,
- 9:12Australia. Oh, OK.
- 9:15Yeah, cuz I mean, if you're going to film something about
- 9:17murder plants, why wouldn't it be?
- 9:20In Australia, well I thought it was going to be LA because I saw
- 9:23like you were watching the special features and I saw like
- 9:26in the background you could see like a cityscape back there.
- 9:29And I was like, OK, they probably just went on to the
- 9:31hills in LA or whatever. I mean, Australia has cities.
- 9:34Yeah, I know. But like, most movies are made
- 9:38in Hollywood. OK, Yeah.
- 9:40So this is actually picked up by Ben Stiller's production
- 9:43company, Red Hour Films. They bought the rights based on
- 9:46the book outline and this is before Scott B Smith had even
- 9:49finished writing the book. And they told him that they
- 9:52wanted to buy the rights for it and have him write the
- 9:55screenplay before he had even finished writing the book.
- 9:57So he was writing the last like third of the book with the fact
- 10:02in mind that he was going to be adapting it to a screenplay.
- 10:04How does that even happen? Like how do they catch wind of
- 10:06the story before the story is even released?
- 10:09So according to the special features I was watching, it
- 10:11looks like he sent them the outline.
- 10:13So he was like looking for this. I guess so.
- 10:15OK, yeah, cuz I think he, this wasn't his first screenplay.
- 10:19Yeah, not his first novel nor his first screenplay.
- 10:21So yeah, exactly. He's done all of these, yes.
- 10:27They also like to use fairly new directors.
- 10:30So they got Carter Smith involved because, you know,
- 10:34they're trying to think of who they want to have directed and
- 10:37what kind of tone they want to have for the movie.
- 10:38And somebody brought up this movie called Bug Crush by a
- 10:42first time director, and it was actually by Carter Smith and it
- 10:45had the tone that they really wanted.
- 10:47And they're like, all right, cool, let's bring him in for
- 10:48this. Cool, that's I like that they
- 10:51bring in fresh talent for that type of thing.
- 10:53Yeah, and I think he was actually a very good person to
- 10:55do this because he is also a photographer.
- 10:57He really loves natural light. And that's so much of what this
- 11:00movie is, because they wanted to shoot it on location.
- 11:03They didn't want to build it in a set or a studio because they
- 11:08wanted to be able to work with the natural light.
- 11:10They wanted the actors to really feel the elements of things.
- 11:12They wanted that single location for that sense of isolation.
- 11:15And I think all of that also ties in really well to how the
- 11:18special effects are done because those are mostly practical.
- 11:21And it really got the actors, like, freaked out seeing and
- 11:23feeling stuff. That's cool.
- 11:25Yeah. So a lot of a lot of the
- 11:27production of this film, like watching these extras, this
- 11:30behind the scenes stuff gave me a new love and appreciation for
- 11:33this movie. When they put that kind of care
- 11:35into it. Yeah, so they Speaking of
- 11:38putting in that kind of care, they designed this these vines
- 11:42based off of elements of real life plants.
- 11:44So there are plants that are carnivorous and will follow like
- 11:48the scent of blood. There are plants that will do
- 11:50like mimicking to like trick its prey.
- 11:54That's so weird. There are plants that will like,
- 11:59you know, deposit and pick up on skin and clothing.
- 12:02So they were really trying to pull from real life elements and
- 12:05their thought process was their vine.
- 12:07Like once they get to the ruins, this vine is in every single
- 12:10shot of the movie for the rest of the movie.
- 12:12So they wanted it to be something that was like based on
- 12:16reality. And they were even thinking
- 12:17about things like how does this plant photosynthesize and feed?
- 12:21Like what kind of conditions does it need?
- 12:23And if you watch it like as it's going, you'll see that the more
- 12:27like blood it consumes, we see more of those red flowers.
- 12:30Wow. I never.
- 12:31Yeah. Wow, that's amazing.
- 12:33Yeah, and they actually, they had 12 people in a little
- 12:36workshop just building these vines by hand.
- 12:40And they had to do so many tests first to try and get the leaves
- 12:43just right. So what they did was they base
- 12:45the leaves and the vines themselves.
- 12:47Their look that is off of pumpkin vines because they're
- 12:51like nobody's afraid of a pumpkin vine, Like, and they
- 12:54want the characters to not have a reason to question like just
- 12:57walking into like this pile of vines on these Bruins.
- 13:01And they're like, who's afraid of a pumpkin vine?
- 13:03We all go to like pumpkin patches every year.
- 13:04Like that's no big deal except when they were making them and
- 13:08then they did a camera test, the texture made it look too
- 13:13reptilian and it wasn't picking up right on camera.
- 13:16So they ended up having to keep adjusting the thickness of it
- 13:19and the texture of it until it looked right on camera.
- 13:22Which I could totally relate to doing my own cosplays and
- 13:25special effects. Something I will look from
- 13:29screen onto whatever I'm working on in front of me and I'm like,
- 13:32this is perfect and exactly how it looks.
- 13:34But then when I'm like taking photos of it as a finished
- 13:36product, I'm like, well, this isn't translating well at all.
- 13:40That's tough, man. Especially, I can only imagine
- 13:43how difficult it was to make all of those two.
- 13:45Yeah. And it really effects with your
- 13:46head when you're like, this isn't what this thing actually
- 13:48looks like, but this is going to look best on camera.
- 13:51Like, it's it's just really kind of insane to think about.
- 13:54And I even had to think about like, so like if you look at
- 13:56like leaves on a tree, when sun shines through it, it almost has
- 13:59a glow from within. So they had to get that same
- 14:01effect on these leaves. So these vines are all
- 14:05practical. The only stuff that's CGI D is
- 14:08when they are moving. So like when we see it, like,
- 14:10you know, the little, it's like wrapping around them.
- 14:13Yeah, when it's wrapping around them, when they're like ringing
- 14:16the cell phone or talking, things like that.
- 14:19And to get the actors to react just right, like they would
- 14:21sometimes like sneak up behind them, like poke them with a
- 14:24stick. So that way they jump.
- 14:26That's good. Yeah.
- 14:27So I think that was, that was all like really, really cool.
- 14:30They also I had a lot of work with the special effects.
- 14:34There are so many fake legs that are involved in this.
- 14:38They are gnarly looking man, they did a great job.
- 14:40And Carter Smith gave the give the special effects team a real
- 14:45challenge because he wanted to be able to cut Amy's leg, then
- 14:49roll her over and cut her back in that scene where they're
- 14:51pulling the vines out. He wanted to be able to do that
- 14:53all in a single shot and now have cuts taken away.
- 14:55And Jason Baird was like, that's not how we normally do it.
- 14:59So they had a challenge to try and figure out how to do it.
- 15:01And basically they had a fake leg propped up and they had her
- 15:05sitting in such a way that they could, you know, cut into the
- 15:07fake leg, pull out the vine and then roll her over.
- 15:09And she had like a back, like strapped to her that would
- 15:14release blood when it was cut and would have a vine inside
- 15:17that they could pull out. So they had her like position in
- 15:20such a way that they could do all of that without having to
- 15:22cut away. Wow.
- 15:23Some nifty camera work too, probably helps.
- 15:25Yeah, so I just, there was so much that went into this that I
- 15:29just, it really fascinating to watch all of love it.
- 15:33Also, like another fun little thing is that it was freezing
- 15:38cold, which is not fun for the actors, but to make them look
- 15:42sweaty, they would spray them with olive oil.
- 15:44What the fuck? So that's what they were using.
- 15:46Yeah. They're using olive oil to make
- 15:48them look sweaty. And they actually use oil in a
- 15:50different kind of way too. When they did the amputation on
- 15:53Matias, they sprayed the silicone legs with frying oil.
- 15:58And they actually had the pan was red hot, So when they
- 16:00pressed it up against the stump, it made that sizzling sound and
- 16:03burned the prosthetic so it would.
- 16:05Look. That's awesome.
- 16:06Yeah. Holy.
- 16:07Shit man, they did a great job with all.
- 16:08This stuff and then so another challenge about shooting on
- 16:15location was even though you know, you would think like
- 16:18Australia Light all the time, it's not because of where they
- 16:22were shooting. There is a mountain, so the sun
- 16:24would be behind the mountain by about 2:33 in the afternoon.
- 16:28So they would have to sit through night shoots like early
- 16:30in the afternoon just because of the way the lighting was.
- 16:32That sucks. And it also meant that they had
- 16:34to start their day shoots really early in the day.
- 16:36Oh man, yeah, that's one of the things you got to look for when
- 16:40you do scouting right there. And then also the entire cast
- 16:44and crew were very familiar with the book.
- 16:46So the movie was announced shortly after the book came out.
- 16:48So there was a lot of hype about it.
- 16:50And Carter Smith was actually on vacation.
- 16:52He said he had the book. He was about 30 pages and he was
- 16:55like, this is my vacation book. I'm very excited about it.
- 16:58He gets a call from Red Hour Films and they want him as the
- 17:01director and he's like, I'm reading it.
- 17:03That's. Crazy.
- 17:04And then the whole crew, the whole cast, they all read the
- 17:07book because there are differences.
- 17:08There are quite a few differences between the book and
- 17:10the movie, especially in what character actions are taken.
- 17:13So they were doing a lot of like, picking up on the
- 17:17characters from the books and also from one another and how
- 17:20they were having to reinterpret those kinds of things.
- 17:22And they were given a lot of room for like, improv and
- 17:25interpretation, and they could put their own input into really
- 17:28kind of like, adapt those characters the way they needed
- 17:31to. Wow.
- 17:33So this was definitely like a production of Labor and Love.
- 17:36Yeah, it sounds like it. Yeah.
- 17:38And they definitely had the right team for this because it
- 17:40sounds like they went with like the right attitude and effort.
- 17:42Yeah, he said that because they were trying not to sell it so
- 17:45much like a straight up horror film because none of them really
- 17:48thinks of it that way. They're like, yes, there are
- 17:50horror elements, but this is a survival movie, you know?
- 17:52And one of the things that they really talked about was like
- 17:55everything was every act of violence that happened was like
- 17:58actually out of an act of caring, it just going wrong.
- 18:02Yeah, I, I heard them talk about that.
- 18:04I overheard that part. And it almost felt like they
- 18:07were trying to like, not label it a horror movie.
- 18:10Like they were like afraid of that label for some reason,
- 18:12which I don't think that there's anything wrong with that.
- 18:14I mean, it, it is a horror movie.
- 18:15Like whether they wanted it to be or not.
- 18:18I mean, it ended up being one. And as a horror fan, I fully own
- 18:22this as the horror genre, but I get it from where they're coming
- 18:25from, where that's a production company that hasn't done horror
- 18:28before. Yeah.
- 18:29And they were having having trouble getting people involved
- 18:31because a lot of people here who are don't take it seriously.
- 18:34And Carter Smith was like, but we didn't want those people
- 18:36anyway. That's a great attitude.
- 18:38Yeah. So that's a lot of facts, a lot
- 18:42of fun that was. Really good stuff.
- 18:44And I'm ready to start talking about it.
- 18:46OK, cool, good, bad, ugly and absurd.
- 18:48Yeah, all. Righty All right, so the good
- 18:51for this. I like the characters in this
- 18:55right here. I think that we have a good
- 18:56group of, like, realistic people.
- 19:00I think that that really helps you connect with the characters.
- 19:03I like how they're all brought there together.
- 19:05Like you relate to that whole thing of like, I'm here because
- 19:08this is my girlfriend's friend or, you know, whatever.
- 19:11Like don't really care about this other guy, but we kind of
- 19:13have to be friends based off of the circumstances.
- 19:16And, you know, like, it's something you can relate to.
- 19:19Yeah. And it kind of adds some like
- 19:21depth to like the moments and everything, you know, Like it,
- 19:24it puts like if you think about their relationship, you kind of
- 19:27like analyze their behaviors and actions a little bit differently
- 19:31because they're not, you know, looking at this as like close
- 19:33friends or anything. Yeah.
- 19:34And I think it's especially interesting when you look at the
- 19:36relationship dynamics, like when you see, say, Amy and Eric and
- 19:41Stacy and Jeff, like they have a different kind of relationship
- 19:44to one another than Jeff and Eric have to each other.
- 19:47Because like you, I mean, you can imagine that you're around
- 19:52your partner's best friend a lot more than your partner's best
- 19:55friend's partner. And I think that's really
- 19:57interesting the way they we showed that.
- 19:59Yeah, Another thing I, I mean, I, I like the threat in this
- 20:03movie, like the vines are really, really creepy.
- 20:06And I like that the build up works for this.
- 20:09Like, you don't really learn that until like halfway through
- 20:12the movie, but you don't really need to because like the way
- 20:15that it starts, like they go there and then they're suddenly
- 20:18like surrounded by these group of locals that have a completely
- 20:21different language. Yeah, they're they're Mayan.
- 20:23Yeah, they don't even speak, like, Spanish.
- 20:25So like, there's no getting through to them.
- 20:27And you're just being held captive there on these ruins.
- 20:31And you can see, like, people have had this happen to them
- 20:35before. There's like, tents set up at
- 20:36the top. And then you can hear your phone
- 20:38ringing and, like, there's like, bodies and shit, you know, like,
- 20:41it's really good. And then, like when you do get
- 20:43that reveal of, like, the vines, especially when it's inside her
- 20:48skin and they, like, RIP it out and they just, like, tear it
- 20:51out. Oh, my God.
- 20:53Is it? It's just like, so visceral.
- 20:55It's effective. It hits that like something
- 20:58about it, like it kind of like hits your animalistic side.
- 21:03I don't know like how to describe that.
- 21:05For me, and this held up in the book and I think the unrated
- 21:08version did the build up to it a little bit better.
- 21:11It's when they find out that the vine is mimicking the phone
- 21:13ringing in the, in the R rated version, it's kind of a let
- 21:17down. Like we don't have the same kind
- 21:18of build up. But in this one, like they're
- 21:19really looking, they're searching, they find this dead
- 21:21archaeologist and then like they get really close.
- 21:24They see divine doing it and then it attacks them.
- 21:27And that's a lot more similar to how it is in the book.
- 21:29And that's like the moment where I'm like, oh God, this isn't
- 21:32just like a hungry plant. It's a mean plant.
- 21:35That was one of the things because like, I forgot about
- 21:38that part and I was just saying to myself, damn, like, fuck,
- 21:41what's his name? Heinrich, his brother.
- 21:44He's like, it's got a good battery life that phone has been
- 21:47going for. Days.
- 21:48And it has been trucking along. Can you imagine if it was me
- 21:52though? Yeah, you.
- 21:54Yours would. I would know right away if I'm
- 21:55still hearing that phone like something's wrong.
- 21:57Jesse's phone's gotta be dead by now.
- 22:02Yeah. And like, the final good thing I
- 22:03have to say is I love the attention to detail, especially
- 22:06with, like, their clothing as the movie goes on because, like,
- 22:09it starts off and they get, like, a little pieces of it on
- 22:11them. But by the end of the movie you
- 22:12can see like most of their quotes are just like Mossy.
- 22:16Yes, that was actually one of the good things that I wrote
- 22:19down was like that attention to detail and the set dressing and
- 22:21everything. It's not even just on their
- 22:22clothes, but like you'll notice when they're doing the the like
- 22:26mini surgery on Stacy, like their hands have the Moss on
- 22:30them. Too.
- 22:30Yeah, I didn't catch. That, yeah.
- 22:31And they don't really have a way to wash it off because they had
- 22:35that one rainstorm which was cut out.
- 22:38Yeah, that was the thing. Like, you wonder in this movie
- 22:40because they make water rationing such a big part at the
- 22:43very beginning, but then it's never discussed again.
- 22:46Yeah, they get rain and they get more water.
- 22:48So that's like a thing that happened.
- 22:50But yeah, that attention to detail, I think was really
- 22:53great. And then, like we said, talking
- 22:55about how they were able to adapt the relationship.
- 22:57So here's the thing. And this was something that I
- 23:00had to learn and grow with as a person who enjoys books and
- 23:05movies, right, is that if you're going to adapt a book to a
- 23:10movie, you have to understand that you do not have the same
- 23:13length of time to tell the same story.
- 23:14Yeah, you've got like 2 hours, 3 hours Max, but that's pushing.
- 23:18That's pushing it. It has to be an incredible.
- 23:20That has to be an opus, you know what I mean?
- 23:23So I like one of the things that you have to do is sometimes you
- 23:26give a character action to a different character from the
- 23:29movie to the book or from the book to the movie.
- 23:32So we can In the book, it's the Greek that falls down.
- 23:36Dmitri, he falls down and breaks his back.
- 23:39He doesn't speak any English, so they don't know what's going on.
- 23:42When they amputate him, they don't have his consent and
- 23:45that's a lot more intense. But we've had this build up of
- 23:48those different relationships. We've already started to see
- 23:50Jeff kind of like rubbing people the wrong way a lot more than
- 23:53we've seen in the book. Like there's much more of a
- 23:56build up to Jeff being this person that seems almost
- 23:59sociopathic in this setting. Whereas if we did it in the
- 24:02movie, it goes from Jeff being a little bit bossy to all of a
- 24:05sudden just like chopping people's legs off, which is a
- 24:07huge jump. Whereas in this we do have
- 24:10Matthias, Matthias consent, but then he starts to say no because
- 24:14he is feeling it. But that doesn't stop Jeff.
- 24:18So we see that devolution, the evolution a little bit better.
- 24:21And that's those are the types of changes that you have to make
- 24:24in a movie to tell the same heart of the story without, you
- 24:28know, having 500 pages of scripts like you would have 500
- 24:32pages of a novel. I'm glad that you could make
- 24:36that connection because I mean, I can't speak to it, I've not
- 24:39read the book, but I did like that part of his character where
- 24:42like he's a Med student and he is like the most responsible of
- 24:46the group and he feels like he is the one that has to take
- 24:50charge. Yeah.
- 24:51And he's like making noise decisions.
- 24:53And some of them like feel like they have to trust him cuz he's
- 24:55like the only someone that can maybe know what he's talking
- 24:57about. Because I mean, he's, you know,
- 25:00like I get the impression that these people, like the friends
- 25:02there are all there like having good times.
- 25:05Like they're not taking like school quite as seriously.
- 25:07But he's like, he's in Med school.
- 25:09So I was like, Oh no, he might be.
- 25:11I got to, I got to take Eric's side on this.
- 25:13He got into Med school. He had not started yet.
- 25:17I exactly. And that's the thing, like, his
- 25:20character kind of becomes like a little smug and he's like a
- 25:23little entitled. And then he thinks that he's
- 25:25like, I don't know. He thinks that he knows best for
- 25:27everybody. And I think with Jonathan Tucker
- 25:30being our common thread, this is kind of what I was talking about
- 25:33last week with Texas Chainsaw was we had Jessica Biel as this
- 25:37morally superior character, and there was no levels to everybody
- 25:40else in the group. Yeah, we see those levels in
- 25:43this group and we see levels within Jeff as a character too.
- 25:47Yeah, except I I wouldn't really say any of the other three are
- 25:50responsible people. Like none of the other three in
- 25:52this situation are responsible, but I think that they have like
- 25:57better takes on things. They have a lot more emotional
- 26:00maturity. Yeah.
- 26:01Like Stacey, you know, like, recognizing that Amy's cheating
- 26:05is hell of fucked, but also being like, she's also really
- 26:09freaked out because she's been with Jeff for a million years
- 26:12and he's about to move across the country.
- 26:13Yeah. Like there's an element of
- 26:16emotional maturity there that I think is really great.
- 26:19So yeah, I just, I think, I mean.
- 26:22I wouldn't necessarily call like, you know, right, like
- 26:24recognizing cheating and be like, but it's OK because of
- 26:26this, it's like a mature. I don't think, no, I'd like, I'm
- 26:30not saying that like I think the hand waving it away is really
- 26:33great. I'm saying like I feel like it's
- 26:35written in a really human way and it's written as not like
- 26:37super black and white. Yeah, yeah, I get.
- 26:39It. Yeah.
- 26:40And I feel like it's also like a realistic situation for people
- 26:43that have been best friends for years, kind of like not want to
- 26:45see the shittiest side of their best friend, yeah.
- 26:48I can get that. And also, yeah, I agree.
- 26:51I like this villain. It's just it's this vine.
- 26:55We don't understand it. We don't.
- 26:56There's a lot of nature that we don't fucking understand.
- 26:59And as human beings, we tend to be really arrogant.
- 27:02And this is really fucking scary to me.
- 27:05And I think Travis will tell you, I don't like vines.
- 27:08To this day. I don't like plants that have
- 27:10vines. I don't like seeing them around.
- 27:11I don't like the vines that crawl up our house.
- 27:13I mean, we need to get rid of these.
- 27:15Yeah. But you know what I don't like
- 27:16on pumpkins? Vines.
- 27:17Yeah. OK so you're you disagree what
- 27:20they said before. You are terrified of the pumpkin
- 27:22vines. Yeah, I'm, well, it's all vines,
- 27:25really. OK.
- 27:26Yeah. So like, I just, I if nature can
- 27:28be a rope, that's just begging for trouble.
- 27:32So, yeah, I just, I think that this movie, like, really works
- 27:36for me. And I love the book.
- 27:40So if you're curious about the book, I would absolutely
- 27:42recommend it. I read it probably a dozen times
- 27:45when it came out. Oh wow.
- 27:46Yeah, alright, well, let's do some bad stuff.
- 27:50Let's do some bad. I really didn't have a lot of
- 27:53bad things to say about this movie, but there was one thing
- 27:55that I was curious. Like it was weird.
- 27:58Like the plant kind of picks and chooses like when it wants to be
- 28:03a threat just based on when the story needs it.
- 28:06It's inconsistent. It's a predator.
- 28:09It's a hunter. It is.
- 28:10What does it what does it have to hunt?
- 28:12The the prey is their trap. They it's not going anywhere.
- 28:15Like it's fucking with it. It's playing with its food, but
- 28:18like it's not at the same time like it's just it comes.
- 28:22Lacrosse is like incompetent, inconsistent.
- 28:25It's weird. Like just finish the fucking job
- 28:27plant. It's being a Rascal, it's a
- 28:29little scamp. It is playing with its food like
- 28:31you said. Have you ever seen a cat kill a
- 28:34mouse? Yeah, but I think cats are way
- 28:38different than plants. I mean.
- 28:40You're one of those arrogant humans that would be killed by
- 28:42the spine because you think you know we're.
- 28:44Surviving this fine. Realistically, nobody's going to
- 28:47survive this fine. The only way to survive is just
- 28:49not even encountering. You're Heinrich.
- 28:51You're gone before the rest of the group even gets there
- 28:53because you're like, oh, it's just plant.
- 28:55Well, my cell phone fucking rules.
- 28:57It's got the best battery life, so I can live with that trade
- 28:59off. I mean, I see, that's I, I
- 29:03figured you would probably say that, but I mean, you don't see
- 29:07like plants being like sentient or anything like that.
- 29:10Like they just like they don't have like a mind, like they just
- 29:13like act on impulse. That's what makes this scary.
- 29:16So like the impulse is like always kill in this case.
- 29:19So it's going to kill. You don't see like a fucking
- 29:21Venus flytrap just like yapping away over there or anything, you
- 29:24know, like it eats just like when something lands on it
- 29:25because that's just it's instinct.
- 29:27Yeah, but that's what makes these vines scary, is that they
- 29:30are mean. That was one of my good points
- 29:32that I brought up. They're not just, they're not
- 29:34just killer. They're mean.
- 29:36Would you, how would you feel if in Halloween there was no like,
- 29:40oh, I'm just going to chase Lori and I'm just going to pop that
- 29:43in the closet? Like what?
- 29:45Michael Myers is not a fucking plant.
- 29:47He's a God damn human being. Don't Loomis him.
- 29:51You're a you're being Sam Wilmas to him right now.
- 29:53You dehumanize that man. You became what you hated.
- 29:57I didn't demonize him though. That doesn't matter.
- 30:00I'm just. Saying like, look, it's just
- 30:02it's not a normal plant. You need to not think of it like
- 30:05that. You just, it's what it needs to
- 30:10be. That's my whole point.
- 30:12It it needs to be. If it needs to be a killer, it's
- 30:14going to be a killer. If it needs to be a little
- 30:15Rascal, it's going to be Rascal. That's it.
- 30:18It's a rascally killer. It's both.
- 30:22It's playing with its food. It's having fun.
- 30:24OK. It gets no enrichment otherwise.
- 30:26Travis. So it has to have the phone.
- 30:28Yeah. See, No, I had like a little
- 30:31thing in my head when you were talking about the whole little
- 30:35thing in my head, I thought. Those are little things.
- 30:40They're rarely big things for me.
- 30:42They're usually little things, but like the way that you
- 30:46described how I get evolved over time and then like the leaves or
- 30:50like the flowers became more red.
- 30:52I was like, OK, maybe it's like feeding.
- 30:54It starts weak and then it gets stronger the longer the humans
- 30:57are present. But like I it was pretty freshly
- 31:03fed when they arrived because of Heinrich and the archaeologist.
- 31:07So I don't think that that's the case.
- 31:10I could have given you that out, but they they didn't allow that
- 31:13to happen. OK.
- 31:15OK, so what's your bad then? My bad.
- 31:19Honestly I'm just going to say I I don't like some of the stuff
- 31:27that the rated version cuts out. Like it it takes away some of
- 31:32the tension from it. And I get 2008 readings for
- 31:35different than how we rate movies in 2025.
- 31:40But it did take away a lot of the tension from the book, you
- 31:44know, and even in this unrated version, there were a couple of
- 31:47scenes like we cut out the rain scene and we don't even like
- 31:49have a passing mention of it. So it's like you said, we like
- 31:51see like the water bottle being passed around and we're like
- 31:55they're taking decent sized gulps.
- 31:57Like how is there Stillwater? Yeah, I mean, it's not even
- 32:00really brought up again though after that one discussion,
- 32:02that's the last they mentioned it.
- 32:04Yeah. And we don't really get a whole
- 32:05lot. Yeah.
- 32:06And like, that's the thing too, is that you would expect, like
- 32:08with the heat and the direct sun exposure, you'd expect to be
- 32:11seeing a lot more effects of dehydration, a lot faster,
- 32:14Especially after Jeff had his whole spiel about like each of
- 32:16those new type of gallon of water per day.
- 32:19If we're sitting on our fat asses like you guys wanted to do
- 32:21at the resort. I just assume he said that part
- 32:23like off camera. You'd be.
- 32:24You'd see see Jeff like piss him directly in his mouth.
- 32:27Absolutely. Yeah, absolutely.
- 32:30I'm surprised he didn't have people like collecting their pee
- 32:33to. Like, I know we got plenty of
- 32:34water guys, but let's still let's try and pee in each
- 32:36other's mouths. He's like really trying to like
- 32:39he's like, this is my moment. I can finally do this.
- 32:43What is your ugly? Let's see, just like the imagery
- 32:48of the vines inside of them. It's some of the most.
- 32:51Disturbing shit you'll see. Like seeing it squirm around
- 32:55under the skin and anytime they have to like cut open the skin
- 32:58and just like yank it out. It's so fucking disgusting.
- 33:03My ugly is it's the like, it's the group dynamics.
- 33:09And I feel like it's a real, it's realistic, the way
- 33:11everything kind of like combusts, but it's ugly to
- 33:15watch. And like you've got Jeff who
- 33:19will be like, all right, we've got no choice.
- 33:21We just have to cut this man's legs off.
- 33:23But also they're like, all right, we need to try and come
- 33:25up with an escape plan. He's like, no, absolutely not.
- 33:28We're not even going to entertain that idea.
- 33:29The Greeks will be here tomorrow.
- 33:31I liked his whole thing there. He's like, we're American,
- 33:34they'll be here. It's like, come on man, they
- 33:36don't give a fuck about you. Also, like, how do you know
- 33:40anybody's going to know where you went?
- 33:41Like, how are they going to know to ask these Greek gentlemen
- 33:45who? Does anybody know that you have
- 33:48a connection to them? You know what I mean?
- 33:49Like, yeah, well, how is this investigation going to work?
- 33:52Dmitri, what's their connection? Yeah, but like, how are they
- 33:56going to know to start with Dmitri?
- 33:58Yeah, I got you. Yeah.
- 34:01OK, well then absurd. Probably the most absurd thing
- 34:06is that weird hand drop scene for me.
- 34:11I just, I don't know why. Why was that the time for that,
- 34:18the time and place? I just, it was weird.
- 34:22I, I'm surprised it wasn't a deleted scene.
- 34:25They kept it in the unrated cut. Like I, I like it for the
- 34:27absurdity, but like, just like if I'm actually thinking about
- 34:31it, then I was just so bizarre. And one of the other things is
- 34:35like how little they protected this one thing that they do not
- 34:40want anybody to make contact with these people like have
- 34:45absolutely 0 protections. They put a fucking leaf on the
- 34:48trail and like, that'll deter. That'll do just fine right
- 34:52there. But like, you know, Americans
- 34:55and like a German dude and a Greek dude come walking over
- 34:58there and like, oh shit, now we just got to surround it.
- 35:01And you know, like, why not have like fucking fences or like, you
- 35:04know, like just do something, do something.
- 35:08Yeah, I, you know, if I saw a trail with like a branch in
- 35:11front of it, I'd be like, wow, rain.
- 35:13Nature. Yeah.
- 35:15Like something like a broken limb, something like that.
- 35:19My absurd, and this is one of my favorite things that I laugh my
- 35:24ass off every time I watch this movie, is they hear the ringing
- 35:29from within the dig site of the ruins.
- 35:32And Matthias goes, that's Heinrich's phone.
- 35:36And they're like, Are you sure? And he goes, yeah, that's his
- 35:39ringtone. I have the same one.
- 35:42That's the ringtone that came installed on the phone.
- 35:44Dum dum. Yeah, I like to imagine they
- 35:47picked it together. It's just like a.
- 35:50It's it's the most basic ringtone.
- 35:52Yeah. Anybody could have had that,
- 35:54especially in 2008. Yeah.
- 35:55Although that was the time when people were really getting big
- 35:58into Bluetooth and ringtones to each other.
- 36:00Oh man, I had personalized ringtones for everybody.
- 36:04Yeah, that was like the shit man on school buses.
- 36:07I can get it back there. Alright.
- 36:08What's your ringtone? Just like, send it to me Just
- 36:11back and forth. All right, All right.
- 36:14Well, I guess we should rate this thing.
- 36:16Yeah. Suppose we should.
- 36:18Yeah, I really like this movie and I'm just going to say yeah,
- 36:21the unrated cut, definitely the way to watch it.
- 36:23Surprisingly, if you can find a way to do that, I recommend it.
- 36:26Opt it for me. So I'm going to give it an 8
- 36:291/2. I'm going to give it a nine.
- 36:30OK. So we've got a starting average
- 36:33of 8.75. Nice.
- 36:35All right. So we started off with a woman
- 36:37sitting inside of a ruin. She's crying, just calling for
- 36:41help. She's trying to use her phone
- 36:43that's not working of course, and then pulled Into Darkness.
- 36:49So fuck her. We're going to cut to a resort
- 36:54instead. And we're going to see Stacey
- 36:55beating Jeff and Jen and she says now we're going to play
- 36:58war. And he goes, war is not a real
- 37:00game. And then she goes, this is your
- 37:02rule, who the winner picks the next game.
- 37:04I get the feeling Jeff is not a lot of fun.
- 37:07He's the swirl wizard. Yeah.
- 37:08Like he didn't want to play the game.
- 37:09He didn't want to play by his own rules there.
- 37:11Yeah, I mean, war is like, it's mostly a game of chance, but
- 37:14it's also a game of like quick reactions, like you, just you.
- 37:17How's that? Yeah.
- 37:18How's that not a real game? Yeah, that doesn't make any
- 37:19sense. He because he wants to be able
- 37:21to use his intellect. No, he is outsmart everybody.
- 37:24Yeah, yeah, They're all just like, chilling, having a good
- 37:27time. They're on vacation at a resort
- 37:29in. Mexico, I think.
- 37:31Yeah, I don't know, but Amy lost one of her earrings.
- 37:36Which don't wear like hook earrings in a pool, that's just
- 37:42asking for trouble. But it's OK cuz Matthias found
- 37:45it. What was he looking for at the
- 37:47bottom of the pool? Nobody.
- 37:47Knows how did he know this hers was he just like walking around
- 37:50did he find this earring and just like doing the laps around
- 37:52the pool just. Like over here stole the earring
- 37:54and he was waiting to hear her freak out about it.
- 37:57Yeah, he's been stalking them this whole week.
- 38:00So yeah, they all introduce each other.
- 38:02Stacy and Amy are best friends. Jeff is dating Amy.
- 38:06Eric is dating Stacy. So they don't actually really
- 38:08know each other, but, you know, that's all good.
- 38:11Matthias was here with his brother.
- 38:13His brother disappeared off with some archaeologist who is going
- 38:15to. This ruin is off the map, so
- 38:18it's not like, super well known. And Jeff was like, oh, hey, I
- 38:21really wanted to go check out some ruins.
- 38:23We don't get to see these very often.
- 38:24He's like, well, I'm going to go look for Heinrich tomorrow.
- 38:26Do you want to come and they end up convincing the others to go
- 38:30along to? It's a special room.
- 38:31It's because it's off the map and it's one that, yeah,
- 38:34uncharted. So that makes it extra appealing
- 38:37for the group. Which means that none of these
- 38:38people has ever seen a horror movie.
- 38:40Yeah, I mean, that's the fucking makings of like it just don't do
- 38:43that. Shit situation.
- 38:44One thing for an archaeologist to go to an unmapped room,
- 38:47that's their job. This is kind of like the 47
- 38:51meters down uncaged situation right here, except above ground.
- 38:54It's kind of like The Descent. Yeah, this is like a combination
- 38:57of those two movies. Yeah, so except this is an
- 39:01ascent. Yeah, the ascent, Yeah.
- 39:05And then we also get a trio of Greek bubbies splashing around.
- 39:10They're gonna come too. But Matthias is not sure that
- 39:13they will be sober enough come morning.
- 39:14Yeah, so we cut to night time. They're all just kind of sitting
- 39:18at the beach. Yeah, it's a beach party.
- 39:21And Jeff is a buzzkill. He really is.
- 39:24Amy's wanting to dance and he's just like, I'm not feeling it.
- 39:27I'm gonna go to bed. But dance with your girlfriend.
- 39:30When she wants to dance with you, come.
- 39:32On, Come on. Like, even if somebody, I don't
- 39:34dance, but if you wanna dance, I'll dance with you.
- 39:37Yeah. You know, it's fine.
- 39:38It's fun. It's good stuff, but no, he's
- 39:41he's a fucking bus. Girl, especially because you
- 39:43know you're about to go away to Med school, like do you not want
- 39:45to have this as like a good vacation memory with her before
- 39:49you're gone and most likely going to break up?
- 39:50He's like that episode I don't see.
- 39:52I don't see them working in a long distance relationship.
- 39:54He's that episode of Seinfeld with Bob Odenkirk where he's
- 39:57like, that's the dream of a doctor, to break up with the
- 39:59person that you were with whenever you become a doctor.
- 40:02Exactly. That's Amy's that girl.
- 40:03Like as soon as he's going to be a doctor, he drops her.
- 40:06Yep. Except he's already doing it as
- 40:08soon as you got accepted in Med school.
- 40:09It's like I'm a doctor, technically.
- 40:10Yeah, he's like, I don't actually need to do the things
- 40:13you want to do. This is our one last hurrah.
- 40:15So I can say I did something for you before we break.
- 40:18Up. And Amy says, you know what, I'm
- 40:21going to get drunk and I'm going to kiss Matthias.
- 40:23Yep, Stacy goes and breaks him up because she doesn't want her
- 40:29friend to make more life choices.
- 40:31I think she's also embarrassed because she had more faith in
- 40:33her. And then Erica said me like, all
- 40:35right, so bet on if she kisses him or not.
- 40:38Yeah. So in the morning Jeff is that
- 40:42asshole who goes for an early morning run on vacation.
- 40:46Fuck that. Guy on the beach even which is
- 40:49higher resistance, it's a harder run.
- 40:51Like he didn't even go that that nice ass hotel definitely had a
- 40:55gym. I know, yeah.
- 40:57He wasn't even. He was too good for the
- 40:58treadmill. Fucking had like a like a lap,
- 41:00like a track in there, sure, yeah.
- 41:02He didn't even just like swim laps in the pool.
- 41:04No, he had to. How was how was he not going to
- 41:07see him do his exercises? Jeff is the worst.
- 41:11Yeah, he is. He bumps into Matthias.
- 41:13Matthias. Matthias.
- 41:15Yeah, and he's eating breakfast and he gets a map for the ruins
- 41:18and he's like, all right, I'll go rally the.
- 41:19Troops. Yeah.
- 41:20Dimitri is awake and sober. His buddies are not.
- 41:23So they're leaving a copy of the map for them to come follow and
- 41:26join them later. Yeah, Stacy is trying to get
- 41:29Eric to get ready. Amy is super hungover and trying
- 41:33to back out. She's like, I just want to stay
- 41:36here in the hotel. And at first, Jeff is like, come
- 41:41on, this is a once in a lifetime experience.
- 41:43Valid. And he goes, don't you want us
- 41:45something to take pictures of other than the beach in the
- 41:48pool? OK.
- 41:49The beach in the pool. The beach in the pool.
- 41:52OK, Now you're patronizing. Yeah.
- 41:54Yeah, he was. He was butthurt about them not
- 41:57wanting to do any adventuring and just like hang out at the
- 42:00beach in the pool which is that means when people do on
- 42:02vacation. When people do on vacation, look
- 42:03I get it. I would love to go see a ruin.
- 42:06Not one that's off the map, that seems sketchy.
- 42:09But like I would love to go see a ruin.
- 42:11But that's the type of person I am on vacation.
- 42:13I wouldn't vacation with somebody who is like, I want to
- 42:16stay in the resort and then go to a place where I want to visit
- 42:19nature. But no, if we if we're going to
- 42:21be a resort staying vacation couple, we're going to just go
- 42:25to a place where we're fine with staying at the resort.
- 42:27That's the point of going. To the resort, don't be.
- 42:29Don't be an asshole to your girlfriend because she's got
- 42:32different interests than you. You can say, hey, will you
- 42:34please experience this thing with me?
- 42:36It's important. But you did not dance with her
- 42:38last night, so does she really owe it to you?
- 42:43So anyways, they're all rallied, they're all ready to go and they
- 42:46make it on the bus. They arrive in this town and
- 42:50this is where they need to get a further ride to the ruins.
- 42:53About 8 kilometers to to the start of their hike, they're
- 43:00taking a taxi. That's a truck with a dog.
- 43:02That's a good sign. That's a good sign.
- 43:04And Stacey and Amy by hats. I like cowboy hats.
- 43:08I relate. What do you what do you buy a
- 43:09cowboy hat in Mexico? It's sombrero.
- 43:11I mean, that's the whole point, right?
- 43:14I mean, they're going hiking and I don't feel like a sombrero is
- 43:17like ideal for hiking in the woods.
- 43:19It protects you from the sun. That's all points.
- 43:22A wide brim like the cowboy hat like folds up on the side.
- 43:25OK, whatever. You thought about this a lot
- 43:27more than that did. Well, I relate to them buying
- 43:30the hats. So obviously I thought about
- 43:34this. They get there, they have to
- 43:35hike another 4 kilometers. Amy's upset nobody told her
- 43:40this. She's wearing flip flops.
- 43:42Yeah, she is blistered. Her feet are ruined.
- 43:47Yeah, she's fucked. The driver doesn't want to take
- 43:50them. Yeah, they have to bribe them,
- 43:52yeah. Yeah, he's like that place.
- 43:53No good. I will take you to this other
- 43:55room. Very popular tourist spot.
- 43:57And they're like, no. Yeah, so they arrive and they
- 44:01have done their hike and they make it to a certain point and
- 44:04they notice that there are these children that are just watching
- 44:07them off in the distance, which that's fucking creepy.
- 44:09What's even weirder is that instead of them going, wow, why
- 44:13are their children alone in the woods, they go, oh they must be
- 44:16locals. Can you guys help us?
- 44:17Yeah, and they just like, stare at.
- 44:20They're children. Yeah.
- 44:22And then they like look over and they're like, oh, here's a plant
- 44:24in the way of this trail. This means this is the way to
- 44:26go. Why there are plants in these
- 44:28woods? Yeah.
- 44:31And like they're like, OK, we must not go this way.
- 44:33There's a plant here. Maybe he's like, this is a sure
- 44:35sign of trouble and Jeff is like, no, which I hate to side
- 44:40with Jeff, but he was. Right with him.
- 44:41He was right in this part, right here.
- 44:43Yeah. So they move past the plant
- 44:46bravely, and they arrive at the ruins.
- 44:50And then this man on a horse arose.
- 44:53He is a Mayan leader. He is yelling at them.
- 44:57They are not speaking any of the same kind of language.
- 45:01Which OK, if it's me, if I live in a town or village or whatever
- 45:08nearby these ruins, I see it as my duty to make sure these vines
- 45:12don't spread. And I also know that there are
- 45:15tourists nearby who keep like trying to come to this area.
- 45:18Other than just being prepared to fucking murder people.
- 45:22Maybe I'm going to learn a couple of phrases like poisonous
- 45:25plants. Learned how to say that in
- 45:27multiple. Languages, I think the most
- 45:29effective thing to do is to just draw.
- 45:32Draw like the vines and like like a fucking X or like a death
- 45:35sign next to a, you know, like the skull and bones.
- 45:38Yeah, you know, I mean, that's universal.
- 45:40Right, but instead he comes out blasting.
- 45:42With a horse? Yeah, with a fucking gun.
- 45:44Just like. They choose.
- 45:47They're like, oh, we're being charged to see these ruins, That
- 45:50makes sense. Here's money.
- 45:52And then Dimitri gets killed. Yeah, cuz he touched the vine
- 45:55and he's over there and yeah, boom.
- 45:58Yep. Yeah.
- 45:59And in the midst of all of this, like he touches the Vine because
- 46:01he's trying to help Amy, who is taking photos of this argument
- 46:06so that way they can remember it later.
- 46:09Going in the scrapbook. As she backs up, she steps into
- 46:12the vines. That's when the guy, like,
- 46:13really freaks out. Dimitri is like, oh, he does not
- 46:16want you taking pictures. Give me your camera.
- 46:18And as he's like grabbing the camera, he touches the vines.
- 46:20And because he's coming too close to the Mayan man, he kills
- 46:24him. You know, and the entire time I
- 46:27was thinking to myself like, they really want these guys to
- 46:30not be there so they can run away, right?
- 46:32What I would do? Take clumps of the vines and
- 46:35just throw them at them. I think you you would have to
- 46:40realize what was happening early on because Amy does throw a vine
- 46:44at a small child later and he gets shot.
- 46:46But by that point we have so many people around.
- 46:49I think if they tried throwing vines at everybody, like they're
- 46:53outnumbered and the people are going to realize what's
- 46:54happening really fast and it's just going to.
- 46:56I'm fucking Hocking them up there from like the top.
- 46:59Like I'm like I'm shielding myself.
- 47:01Like snowballs? Dude, yeah.
- 47:03Like I it's, it's a strategy. I think that's an effective one.
- 47:07OK. And that's, I mean that is a
- 47:09strategy. Well, I started off.
- 47:10I was thinking like, all right, I'll throw bricks.
- 47:12I was like, no, go to the fines. That's the way to do it.
- 47:14Yeah, yeah. So they get to the top.
- 47:18Like they're basically forced to run to the top because they
- 47:20don't want to be murdered. They don't see anybody up there,
- 47:23but they do see like tents and supplies, so that's interesting.
- 47:26Nobody has signal. Matthias did because he had a
- 47:32universal phone, but the Mayan man took it.
- 47:35Yeah, I didn't see that exchange.
- 47:37Yeah, he was showing the picture of Heinrich to him, but I didn't
- 47:41see the phone get taken. Yeah, OK.
- 47:42Yeah. Unfortunately, Matthias does
- 47:45find Heinrich in this moment. This is one of those scenes that
- 47:48was cut out from the theatrical release, but he sees a foot and
- 47:53a watch in a pile of vines, and when he pulls back the vines,
- 47:56that's his brother and I. Can't believe they cut.
- 47:58That, yeah. And then because especially like
- 48:01we cut to him having his hands being washed by Jeff because
- 48:04they're blistering and they assume that it's like, oh, he's
- 48:07having a reaction to the plants or something.
- 48:09Yeah, that and that was weird. Maybe it was too graphic, but I
- 48:11don't remember that shot being very graphic.
- 48:13Yeah. They're not sure what to do.
- 48:17Like they're like, do we try and run?
- 48:19And just like, no, there's no possible way we can get past
- 48:21this single man on a horse that's afraid of this ruin.
- 48:26This guy probably went to the same school as Larry Gordon.
- 48:28A doctor. Trust me, I'm a doctor.
- 48:30We can't even run past these people.
- 48:31Yeah, my God, that Larry was would have for sure been Jeff's
- 48:37attending. Oh man.
- 48:40What a terrible team. Like, that sounds like the
- 48:44doctor duos that I had for a while there.
- 48:49They're like, OK, well, the Greeks are supposed to join us.
- 48:53And they're like, no, those guys, they don't even know,
- 48:55like, up from down. They're so drunk the whole time.
- 48:57And they're like, well, we're supposed to check out tomorrow.
- 49:00They're going to surely know what we're going.
- 49:02What? Like, what's happening?
- 49:03We're supposed to fly back to the States.
- 49:05They'll notice that we're missing.
- 49:06We're American. They Jeff is like, all right, no
- 49:10drinking water. And Aaron's like, dude, Stacey's
- 49:12thirsty. And he's like, we're all going
- 49:14to be thirsty soon. You're going to drink my pee.
- 49:17You're gonna like it. They hear a phone ringing though
- 49:22and it's down in the well, so thankfully they.
- 49:25Haven't. And they know it's Heinrich's
- 49:26phone because it's the same ringtone.
- 49:28Yeah, yeah. So Matthias, he offers to go
- 49:32down there to get the phone. Look, I get that they probably
- 49:36assumed this was safe because they probably assumed that the
- 49:39archaeologist that got there yesterday had just set this up.
- 49:43But still, I see something that's been sitting outside
- 49:46exposed to the elements rope like that.
- 49:48Like I you went on this whole journey with me.
- 49:52I had to go get a new thread because the thread that had been
- 49:54sitting on my sewing machine rotted from sun exposure.
- 49:58Like, why wouldn't you check some of the rope a little bit?
- 50:01Because it wasn't even that far. I know it wasn't.
- 50:03Even that far, but it was like super fucking frayed.
- 50:06Yeah, yeah, they, well, smart doctor man over here.
- 50:10Should have thought of that one. Didn't think of that one, didn't
- 50:12you? Doctor, not a physicist.
- 50:14Yeah. Well, so Matthias that moment
- 50:19too, like it's so well shot because you see that moment of
- 50:22him being almost suspended mid air before just like falling.
- 50:27Yep, Yep, snaps. Falls all the way to the bottom.
- 50:30Dude's fucked up. And then Jeff says Amy or Stacey
- 50:33needs to go check on him and he was like, why not you?
- 50:36You seem not afraid he goes because it takes a man to do
- 50:41that sort of thing. Like he's like, I run on the
- 50:44beach and I don't want to talk about Eric's physique because it
- 50:48makes me a little insecure. But obviously we're the ones
- 50:50that can turn the pulley, even though the whole point of the
- 50:53pulley is that it's a simple machine and it utilizes
- 50:55leverage. So you don't have to be super
- 50:57strong to be able to operate it. Yeah.
- 50:59But again, Jeff is a doctor, not a physicist.
- 51:01He's a. Doctor, he knows, OK?
- 51:03He's smart. Yes, and the rope is not long
- 51:07enough because the people doing this archaeological dig had just
- 51:12enough budget for exactly the right amount of rope to reach
- 51:15the bottom. Yeah, so she has to jump down
- 51:18and she falls and she lands on some glass.
- 51:22Well, it's the glass from her own Lantern that she was holding
- 51:25when she jumped, Yeah. That went out.
- 51:27It cuts her. They throw down some matches
- 51:30which luckily don't land super far away because what the fuck
- 51:32would they do otherwise? Yeah.
- 51:34And she sees Matthias and he's like, I can't feel my feet.
- 51:40And she's like, hey, guys, his back is broken, which they don't
- 51:43know that in the book. In the book because the Greek
- 51:45doesn't speak any English really.
- 51:48She like it's. I think Greek, though he's
- 51:50German. Yes, but it's not Matthias that
- 51:54goes down. Oh, right, right, right.
- 51:56OK, Yeah. So they're like having to do
- 51:58this whole like figuring it out, but the whole like he shit
- 52:00himself. That's still.
- 52:02He shit himself. Yeah, she says it's smell.
- 52:05She's like, he says he can't feel his feet and also it smells
- 52:08and they're like, like what? And she goes like shit.
- 52:11Wow, that's not good. Yeah, at least you know in the
- 52:14book like the Greek couldn't hear them like talking about.
- 52:17How he? Pooped himself.
- 52:18Matthias is just like, he's like, I'm not making any comment
- 52:21on this, like I need some dignity.
- 52:23Yeah, so this is the part where Amy's like, OK, I'm just going
- 52:28to go down there and reason with the people.
- 52:30And she goes down there and she tries to talk to them and she,
- 52:33like, realizes. No, that's not what happens.
- 52:37What happens is Jeff is like, all right, we got to make a
- 52:40backboard and pull them up. And Amy's like, absolutely not.
- 52:44We're not doing that. You can't move somebody with a
- 52:46broken back. And Jeff goes, listen, Amy, I'm
- 52:48a doctor. Yeah, and then then Amy's like,
- 52:51all right, I'm going to go reason with these Mayans down
- 52:54here. Surely they'll care that a man
- 52:57broke his back. I mean, they shot another man
- 52:59right in front of us. But, you know, broken backs is
- 53:02where they draw the line. It's not.
- 53:06And in fact, when they're mean to her, she gets frustrated and
- 53:11throws a clump of vines and it hits a small child who then gets
- 53:14shot right in front of them. It's bad.
- 53:18It's real bad. So they agreed to the backboard
- 53:21idea and it's really bad. So while she's waiting, Stacy
- 53:25kind of tries to find a ringing, but she can't see much and she's
- 53:28afraid to look around too much. Which legit?
- 53:31In this situation, go for it. Put your fear aside.
- 53:34Go get that phone. You need it.
- 53:35Her leg also really hurts. She had a huge piece of glass in
- 53:38her knee. All right, still.
- 53:43Amy comes down there with the backboard and they're like, all
- 53:46right, we've got to lift him because there's still not quite
- 53:49enough rope. God.
- 53:50Yeah, They tried to make like an extension thing.
- 53:53It was not enough. And then she's like, all right,
- 53:56so we need to move him and keep his back flat so that way we
- 53:59don't cause any further breaks and he immediately.
- 54:03Let's see, there's no way to do that.
- 54:05Like you have to have the stretcher there and just like,
- 54:07you know, slowly slide him over on top of it.
- 54:10But yeah. They can't do that here, so
- 54:11props to the sound department for this 'cause you just hear
- 54:15like. God, man, yeah, it's so fucked
- 54:18up, but they get him out of there.
- 54:22Jeff is he, he doesn't want to move him to a tent to give him
- 54:26shelter and coverage. She's like, no, he needs to stay
- 54:29right here. It's a we already did too much
- 54:32fucking damage by pulling him up.
- 54:33We're not going to, we're not going to move him to a tent, and
- 54:36most of all, we're not going to move a tent to him.
- 54:39No, no. Absolutely not.
- 54:42But we do need to keep his legs clean because if if it happens,
- 54:45that's how it'll happen. And there's like if what
- 54:47happens, he goes, if he dies, it'll be an infection.
- 54:51Trust me, Eric, I'm a doctor. So Jeff actually finds Dmitri's
- 54:57plane ticket and he's like, hey, he was supposed to go tomorrow
- 55:00morning so the Greeks will know for sure that he is not there
- 55:04and they'll get suspicious and then they'll come here.
- 55:06So we'll be saved. Yes, they also find keys to the
- 55:09Jeep that they saw at the beginning of their hike.
- 55:13And they're looking for aspirin, which I enjoyed this moment
- 55:16because Jeff was like, hey everybody, let's split up, see
- 55:18if we can find some aspirin. And they just kind of look at
- 55:20him like, how the fuck is aspirin going to help Matthias?
- 55:24And he's like, with the blood flow, OK, He's a doctor.
- 55:29He's a doctor. That does actually make a little
- 55:30bit of sense. So Amy is bandaging Stacy's leg
- 55:36inside the tent. And then they lay down and then
- 55:39Eric comes in and he lays down and Stacy hand fucks him while
- 55:43Amy's just right fucking there. She looks so sad about it too.
- 55:46She is so upset that that's like happening in front of me.
- 55:49Like, you're my friend, why would you do this?
- 55:50Same thing I I would be sad too. And that's why she's like Moody
- 55:54and laying outside of the tent. In the morning, Jeff finds
- 55:59another body and a vine pile. We don't know who this person
- 56:02is. Just just a guy, just somebody.
- 56:05Stacy wakes up and she sees the the vine has like curled up into
- 56:10onto her leg and into the cut in her leg.
- 56:14And that makes me more upset than I can properly articulate.
- 56:20Yeah, this is the one part. This scene right here is the one
- 56:23that gets me because like, it's just right there and Eric is
- 56:25just grabbing and just pulling more and more.
- 56:27Out. It just keeps coming out.
- 56:29And so I had knee surgery nine years ago, like 9 years and two
- 56:36weeks ago to be exact. And I had a nerve block that
- 56:41they do to help with like some of this because they do cut
- 56:44through multiple nerves in your leg.
- 56:46And when the little pouch runs out, you're supposed to pull the
- 56:50tube out. And I remember when the pouch
- 56:52ran out because my mom had come up to help afterwards and I was
- 56:57just like, looking at it. And I was like, I'm supposed to
- 56:59pull this out. And like, all I could think it
- 57:02was like this scene and like trying to pull this shit out of
- 57:05my leg. And I was like, do you want me
- 57:07to pull it out? I was like, please.
- 57:09I was like I can't handle the thought of doing this.
- 57:11Yeah, I don't think I could do that.
- 57:13Either I couldn't even watch her doing it.
- 57:14I would do that for you, but I don't know if I could do that to
- 57:16myself. Yeah, it's, it's absolutely.
- 57:18If it like if it had been you, I would be like, I will do this
- 57:21for you and I won't make disgusted sounds.
- 57:24I will tell you afterwards how gross it was.
- 57:26By the way, we're watching the Ruins after this.
- 57:31Yeah, all right, So if shit's getting bad.
- 57:34Yeah. And another problem is that, you
- 57:37know, as this is happening, is he just like, hey, Amy,
- 57:42something's wrong. I feel like something's wrong
- 57:44now. This should be the first hint
- 57:45that maybe he's not completely fair on his.
- 57:47Legs. Yeah.
- 57:47He's like, I feel something weird on my legs and they're
- 57:49like, OK, he's got weird shit on his legs.
- 57:51Clearly he has feeling down there.
- 57:54And he's like, will you please just pull the blanket back?
- 57:56And she pulls the blanket back and the the vines were vining.
- 58:01They had vining. Hard A.
- 58:03Good portion of his legs they were.
- 58:05Way more aggressive to him than they were to her, and his legs
- 58:08weren't even fucked up, he just broke his back.
- 58:11Yeah, it's, it's bad. They they all freak out and try
- 58:17and get like the vines and stuff.
- 58:20And then this is where they're also realizing that, like, their
- 58:22clothes are starting to like, grow.
- 58:24Yeah, yeah, it's it's really gross.
- 58:28They hear the ringing again and they're like, all right,
- 58:31Matthias is fucked anyway, so we're just going to go take care
- 58:33of this phone situation. They send Amy and Stacy down
- 58:37with torches and they have to go like they're like partner up,
- 58:42stick together, try not to let the vines eat you.
- 58:45They go into a cave that's all vine.
- 58:49When they get down there, that's where the ringing is.
- 58:51And as they're down there, they get really close to where they
- 58:56think they hear the ringing body of the archaeologist pops out on
- 58:59them. That freaks them out.
- 59:00And then they look over and they look into the flowers and they
- 59:03see the little lake. They're not antenna cuz they're
- 59:07not. They're flowers.
- 59:08Yeah, I know what? You're talking about yeah.
- 59:11And they're like rubbing up against each other and making
- 59:14the yeah. Then they attack and it's like a
- 59:19chase scene to get out of this. And I think this is extended too
- 59:22in this version cuz I don't remember this being nearly as
- 59:25like holy shit. Yeah, it's also weird like the
- 59:29the vines just like consume the flame.
- 59:30Do these not burn? They are plants.
- 59:33Would they not burn? They might like have a different
- 59:37burn point they might be able to smother.
- 59:39I don't know what they're like water content is.
- 59:43Yeah, whatever. Either way, I always.
- 59:45Think about it like if you had like a bunch of wet vines like
- 59:48from our little like woodsy area back behind our house, we
- 59:51probably wouldn't be able to start a fire with that.
- 59:54They wouldn't catch immediately anyway.
- 59:55I don't know enough to know. OK, I can't say it one way or
- 59:58another. You're not a doctor or a
- 1:00:00physicist, you're an accountant. That's right, and I'm willing to
- 1:00:03admit that I like the shot of them.
- 1:00:06When they're being pulled up though, and you can see the
- 1:00:09vines just kind of like lunging at them from the well.
- 1:00:13Well, anyways, they make it up to the top.
- 1:00:16Yeah, and they're, they're really freaked out and they're
- 1:00:18not saying what happened at first.
- 1:00:19They're just like, we need to get the fuck out of here.
- 1:00:22Yeah. So this is the part where
- 1:00:25Matthias is getting like, really bad.
- 1:00:27So Jeff is like, all right, we're totally cutting his legs
- 1:00:31off because he has made it very clear that he cannot feel
- 1:00:33anything down there. He has no knowledge of his legs
- 1:00:36existing. Any Yeah, they're all like,
- 1:00:38really, really horrified at this.
- 1:00:39Like, they're like, you absolutely cannot do that
- 1:00:41because it's OK. I'm a doctor and Eric's like you
- 1:00:44are going to start medical school in a couple of months.
- 1:00:47There's a big difference. I love it when he calls him out
- 1:00:49because he's like dude. Like, like nobody in the
- 1:00:51audience. You're not a doctor.
- 1:00:53Yeah. But then they're like, OK, fine,
- 1:00:55let's take it to a vote and then.
- 1:00:57Stacy's like, I vote to do it, and Eric's like, what the fuck?
- 1:01:01And she goes, he's a doctor. And Eric's like, we just talked
- 1:01:04about it. And then Matias is like, hey, I
- 1:01:08feel like I should get the most important vote.
- 1:01:10And I say do it. Yeah.
- 1:01:12And so their plan is that they're going to break the bones
- 1:01:17and then cut through the nerve that's still there.
- 1:01:20And then they're going to cauterize it because when the
- 1:01:23vines had, like, attacked him, they they put a tourniquet up
- 1:01:26anyway. So like, they don't have to
- 1:01:28tourniquet. They just need to make sure that
- 1:01:29he doesn't have continued blood loss.
- 1:01:32So Jeff starts breaking the bones.
- 1:01:37And it is very clear that Matthias is feeling it.
- 1:01:42And, you know, he goes through. He does the first leg, cuts it
- 1:01:45off, cauterizes it. Matthias is saying, no, no, no,
- 1:01:48no, please, no more. And Jeff is like, all right, on
- 1:01:52to the second one. And Erica's like, dude, what the
- 1:01:55fuck? And he goes, he's just freaked
- 1:01:56out because he didn't see it. And these are not the screams of
- 1:01:59a person that's like freaked out watching something.
- 1:02:01These are the screams of somebody going ow that hurts.
- 1:02:05So there is a thing though, the phantom limb situation I think
- 1:02:10could apply here. Like you were so used to seeing
- 1:02:13that. And like I've seen like people
- 1:02:15do experiments of that before, like where like here's your arm
- 1:02:17on this side, it's safe. Here's like a fake arm here.
- 1:02:20It looks like it's your arm, but like I'm going to hit with this
- 1:02:22hammer and you're going to think that you're feeling that pain,
- 1:02:24but you actually are not feeling anything.
- 1:02:26But I think there's a big difference in how you'd react
- 1:02:28from that versus like actually feeling it.
- 1:02:31Yeah, probably. Like it wouldn't like you would
- 1:02:34realize like after some time that it's not real, I would
- 1:02:37think. I don't know.
- 1:02:38I've never experienced it. So I like there is like truth to
- 1:02:42what he's saying. At least, yeah.
- 1:02:45But I think it's also very likely that although he had a
- 1:02:48bad back break, it didn't necessarily mean he was
- 1:02:52paralyzed. Yeah, no.
- 1:02:53And I, I think that that is the case here.
- 1:02:55I think that he actually is feeling that stuff and it's
- 1:02:58fucked up also. It's way more fucked up in the
- 1:03:02unrated part of this. Like you see a lot more of this
- 1:03:05play out and it is gnarly. They did a great job on that
- 1:03:08fake. They did.
- 1:03:08And like they were showing like close up of the prosthetics and
- 1:03:11the behind the scenes and there's like pieces of gravel
- 1:03:13just like embedded in it. And the, yeah, the Jason Baird,
- 1:03:19he was like, and honestly, like the dirtier these got, the
- 1:03:22better they looked like. He was so excited about it.
- 1:03:25They and yeah, great job on those.
- 1:03:28So later that night, Amy is really worried about Stacey
- 1:03:31because she is not acting well. She keeps saying that she thinks
- 1:03:34there's a vine inside of her, like some of it was left.
- 1:03:36And they keep trying to tell her it's fine.
- 1:03:38And, you know, Eric's like, I'm worried about her too, but we've
- 1:03:41got to find a way out of here. And Amy's like, all right,
- 1:03:44great. We need to find a way out of
- 1:03:45here. So it's kind of like they're
- 1:03:46forming a little alliance. Like, all right, we got to
- 1:03:48figure out how to take down Doctor Jeff and also keep Stacey
- 1:03:53calm enough to go along with us. But the vines, rascals that they
- 1:03:56are, start mimicking their voices and distorting it to make
- 1:04:01it sound like they are sexing. Yeah, I wasn't sure.
- 1:04:06I thought that maybe like the vine was having some weird
- 1:04:08effect because it was inside her head.
- 1:04:10But the fact that, like, she actually did hear that, yeah,
- 1:04:12it's a different thing, Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:04:14And it like, I don't know how like, and I guess hearing you
- 1:04:17say that you weren't entirely sure it, this is one of those
- 1:04:20advantages of having read the book because that is absolutely
- 1:04:22what happened in the book. OK.
- 1:04:24Yeah, yeah, I don't think that. I don't think I saw the plants
- 1:04:27doing. Yeah.
- 1:04:28I don't remember if it was this exact like grouping of people,
- 1:04:31but I remember the vines were like distorting like words and
- 1:04:34sounds and stuff to kind of like make them fight each other.
- 1:04:37Well, that does happen later in the movie too.
- 1:04:38Like clearly it does. With her.
- 1:04:41So she comes out and she's yelling at them.
- 1:04:43She's pissed. This gets Jeff involved.
- 1:04:46They're all just like arguing. And in the meantime, Matthias is
- 1:04:49just like choked to death by these vines.
- 1:04:50Yeah, and before when they got like, his legs cut off, like the
- 1:04:54vines, like dragged his legs away.
- 1:04:56Which is so. Fucking weird.
- 1:04:57Yeah, that's mine. Yeah, it's like Zoe trying to,
- 1:05:02like, steal a piece of food. Off the table.
- 1:05:06Yeah, then Stacey panics all over again Seeing this.
- 1:05:10I love Eric's moment. Here he goes.
- 1:05:12Thank God we cut off his legs. Yeah, I know.
- 1:05:15Yeah. Cuz now he's just like if he
- 1:05:18makes it off of this ruin alive, now he's just like a person that
- 1:05:22has helped cut off another person's legs.
- 1:05:23He just has to live with that and he's not a doctor.
- 1:05:26He's not. No, that's not going to go well
- 1:05:28for him. Hopefully he's an accountant.
- 1:05:30He'll be fine if that's the. Case so Stacy starts panicking
- 1:05:33all over again and she's like look look look, we need to cut
- 1:05:36the open. They're definitely vines moving,
- 1:05:38I swear to God. This is the part where the vines
- 1:05:41start mimicking because it's like she's like saying you're
- 1:05:44not listening to me and then just like keeps repeating you're
- 1:05:46not listening to me. It's like mocking here almost.
- 1:05:49The next morning we see the Mayans are salting the earth
- 1:05:51around the ruins, and then they're realizing that birds and
- 1:05:54insects don't seem to land there, so these vines have to
- 1:05:57have been here for a long time. I think it would have been funny
- 1:06:01if they like started setting up like like booths and shit out
- 1:06:05there, like attractions for the family inflatables, you know
- 1:06:10what I mean? I guess it's just like it's like
- 1:06:12a fun time. It's just their block party or
- 1:06:14something. If I were to do a parody, that's
- 1:06:15what I would do. It's really becomes more like an
- 1:06:18amusement park type thing out there, like a fair.
- 1:06:21Like we got that one guy selling like inflatable aliens cuz
- 1:06:24there's one of those everywhere. Yeah, and there's like a Pokémon
- 1:06:27stuffed toys. Out there.
- 1:06:28Yeah. So Eric comes out to talk to
- 1:06:33Jeff and Stacy and he's like come, come, come and they go
- 1:06:39into the tent and he goes Stacy show him.
- 1:06:42And this is where we see the vines move.
- 1:06:45Around. It's upsetting again in a way I
- 1:06:49can't fully articulate. So they're going to do a little,
- 1:06:53little mini surgery. You have to go and do some
- 1:06:57incisions and they're going to just RIP the vines out.
- 1:07:00So they get the one from her leg and then they get the one from
- 1:07:02her back. There was a second one in her
- 1:07:04leg that they chose not to out loud acknowledge because you can
- 1:07:08see it like on her hip area as they're doing the back.
- 1:07:12And then she's like, I still feel like they're sending me
- 1:07:14like, and Amy's like, no more cutting today.
- 1:07:17No more cutting. She goes, no, I feel like
- 1:07:19there's more in me. And then we see across her
- 1:07:23forehead. So it's like later, I think it's
- 1:07:27like the next day or whatever, everybody's asleep and Stacy.
- 1:07:31No, it's Eric says he's going to make a run for it that night.
- 1:07:33Oh yeah, he's he's done. He's not waiting.
- 1:07:35Like nobody's coming. We're getting out of here.
- 1:07:37I'm getting out here regardless. So they all agree.
- 1:07:39OK. That night Jeff can't even find
- 1:07:41a rational argument for this. So they're taking a nap for the
- 1:07:44day, and as they're napping, Stacy wakes up and she sneaks
- 1:07:51out. She looks for the knife and she
- 1:07:54is just cutting and she's just trying to pull these fines out
- 1:07:57of herself. And again, this is one of those
- 1:07:59things that switched the characters.
- 1:08:00And I think it was partially because they had to lick the
- 1:08:03abbreviated time to develop, to develop up all of the emotional
- 1:08:07relationships between these. It.
- 1:08:09I see why they had Stacy doing this instead of Eric.
- 1:08:12Yeah, I can see him. Because she's more of a central
- 1:08:15figure for more of the characters in this.
- 1:08:19So she is like cutting and they all wake up and they just see
- 1:08:21her like a wreck and Jeff tries to get the knife from her and
- 1:08:26she kind of like turns around and swats out and cuts his hand.
- 1:08:29And then Jeff and Eric swap out. And I don't think Stacey
- 1:08:33realizes that they had swapped out because Jeff comes for it or
- 1:08:36because Eric comes for the knife and she turns around and stabs.
- 1:08:39Him. You think she was trying to
- 1:08:40actually stab Jeff? I mean, wouldn't you by this
- 1:08:43point? Yeah, but like, I don't, I
- 1:08:46thought it was just like, like she was obviously blood loss,
- 1:08:51like some weird like things are going on in her head.
- 1:08:54So it wasn't like a decision like that she really wanted to
- 1:08:56do. It was just an accident.
- 1:08:58Yeah, no, I think it was just like a reaction.
- 1:09:00I think she was trying to just like SWAT again.
- 1:09:01Yeah. And Eric was a lot closer
- 1:09:04because he was like, Stacey won't hurt me.
- 1:09:06She also. Did more in a stab motion than a
- 1:09:08splash. Most Yeah, motion.
- 1:09:10I really think it's like a turn around, like leave me alone.
- 1:09:12Like I think that's what she was going for.
- 1:09:14Yeah. And that's not what happened.
- 1:09:16You you need to respect the knife people.
- 1:09:18Yeah, yeah. And so he dies, and he gets
- 1:09:23pulled into the vines. And then Stacy is distraught.
- 1:09:28She realizes that she's got so many vines in her.
- 1:09:31She begs Amy to kill her. And it was like, I absolutely
- 1:09:33can't. And just like I can.
- 1:09:34Yeah, I'm. A doctor so you won't feel this.
- 1:09:37You don't. You have feelings.
- 1:09:39And then instead of using the knife, he just like, takes the
- 1:09:41rock and like, bashes her head over and over again.
- 1:09:43Yeah. Jesus, man.
- 1:09:45So. Jeff and Amy are like, OK, we're
- 1:09:49definitely getting away tonight. We'll do it.
- 1:09:50So they're doing their little plan here.
- 1:09:52They're coming up with a plan. He, just like is gently taking
- 1:09:55her best friend's blood and covering her face.
- 1:09:58I don't question it at this point.
- 1:10:00It's like, OK, like I don't think that this is part of the
- 1:10:01plan. I think he's just a fucking
- 1:10:03psycho at this point. Yeah, he's just, he's more of a
- 1:10:05Rascal than these vines. Yeah, and then we cut to like
- 1:10:09the next day and he is carrying her body down as if she's dead.
- 1:10:14He starts lecturing these Mayan people and I feel like even them
- 1:10:19are like, dude, what is this guy's deal?
- 1:10:22Yeah, I don't know, but they're listening.
- 1:10:24He's captivating. Somehow He's got, he's got their
- 1:10:28attention. Yeah, he's like, he's like, my
- 1:10:30name is Jeff. I'm a doctor.
- 1:10:35Always wanted to be a doctor. I'm going to be the best doctor.
- 1:10:40I'm the only one that matters here.
- 1:10:42But I guess if you want to know my girlfriend over there, her
- 1:10:45name is Amy. That's their secret keyword.
- 1:10:47It's just her name. He goes running, They shoot
- 1:10:52Jeff, she gets to the Jeep, she drives off.
- 1:10:55Now her driving off, that's where the theatrical version
- 1:10:58ends. Yeah, the.
- 1:11:00Oh wait, no, it also ends with. The the unrated version ends
- 1:11:06with no, I'm talking. About the Greeks.
- 1:11:07Showing up. OK, the Greeks end up actually
- 1:11:09showing up after all. Yeah, yeah, the Greeks do show
- 1:11:12up after the driving off. Now, in the unrated version, her
- 1:11:15driving off does still happen. The Greeks do still show up, but
- 1:11:19Amy's driving off is a little bit longer because we cut to her
- 1:11:21face and we see vines just squiggling their way up.
- 1:11:27Then there's like an alternate ending where we see that they
- 1:11:31all died. We're at a graveyard.
- 1:11:34Yeah, it's the same as that where you see the squiggle there
- 1:11:36again and then, yeah, it cuts to a graveyard.
- 1:11:39And we see the the graves groundskeeper is like going
- 1:11:43around cleaning up, you know, stuff and everything.
- 1:11:46And he sees Amy's tombstone, and there is a vine.
- 1:11:51Yeah, I like that. That's.
- 1:11:53Such a good ending, I wish that they kept that.
- 1:11:55In the book Everybody Dies. It doesn't.
- 1:11:57It doesn't involve that part. I don't remember how everybody
- 1:12:01goes. It's been a while since I've
- 1:12:03read the book, but in the book, everybody does die.
- 1:12:05I double checked that. Yeah, there's like 3 endings to
- 1:12:08this. Like, yeah, those those were the
- 1:12:09three endings. Yeah.
- 1:12:11So yeah, there there were a lot of different options for how it
- 1:12:13ended. I like the unrated version where
- 1:12:15it's just like we we don't need confirmation that we died, that
- 1:12:18she died. We know she's going to die.
- 1:12:20Well, that's not the part that I like.
- 1:12:21I like the part that like the vine grew with her body from
- 1:12:24there and it looks like it's like a flower that somebody
- 1:12:26dropped off. Yeah.
- 1:12:28Like, that's a great touch right there.
- 1:12:29I like that a lot. OK, so that's it.
- 1:12:33OK, I'm keeping mine at an 8 1/2.
- 1:12:38Like it's a really, really fucking good movie.
- 1:12:40I like this movie a lot. I'm gonna keep mine at a nine.
- 1:12:42What would you do to bump yours up just a little bit?
- 1:12:46That's tough. I really don't know what I would
- 1:12:48do differently with this one. I really don't know man, I would
- 1:12:55keep that alternate ending. OK.
- 1:12:57Alternate that that that ending was like really, really good.
- 1:13:00That thing like it ended it better for me.
- 1:13:04We there was one more scene that was cut that I see why it was
- 1:13:10cut, but it did kind of give Jeff a little bit of a
- 1:13:13personality. Yeah.
- 1:13:14Where they're, they were so excited about the rain and Amy
- 1:13:19suggests that they do like a celebratory shot of tequila.
- 1:13:22And Jeff was like, no, we're going to get more dehydrated.
- 1:13:25And I was like, dude, you're such a fucking Buzz Keller.
- 1:13:27Yeah, it's like, God, you suck. And then he agrees to do a shot
- 1:13:32if Stacy does a shot, and he also agrees to dance.
- 1:13:35The funny thing about that is like they're like, OK, he
- 1:13:38reluctant only takes a drink, but then he takes like three
- 1:13:40more and like what if you finished the whole bottle from
- 1:13:42like none of them got the drink because.
- 1:13:45And there's also like an extension of him and Amy talking
- 1:13:49about the their escape plan and she, you know, was talking about
- 1:13:52how she wants to do a road trip with him and, you know, all of
- 1:13:56the things they want, you know, for their future.
- 1:13:59It ain't working. No.
- 1:14:00Sorry, Amy. Even after this event where you
- 1:14:03think you could maybe trauma bond?
- 1:14:05No, no. OK, so dream sequel.
- 1:14:10All right, Dream sequel. Well, I think we pick up from
- 1:14:15that alternate ending where the vines have made its way to the
- 1:14:20States and at the graveyard. What if somebody's there like at
- 1:14:26a funeral, but it's like a funeral for, I don't know, maybe
- 1:14:29it's like their brother or somebody who was like a
- 1:14:30murderer. So like nobody else wants to
- 1:14:32show up to the funeral. So it's just like them, the
- 1:14:34priest and like a member of the murder victim's family.
- 1:14:38That's like confronting like. So we've got a small setting,
- 1:14:41they're in the graveyard, then they see this plant and like
- 1:14:45something happens that gets them like trapped, surrounded by
- 1:14:49these vines. What if there's it's going to be
- 1:14:51some kind of like a nature like a like maybe like a fire or
- 1:14:57something that's like got them like surrounded or something, I
- 1:15:00don't know. So something happens and they
- 1:15:03end up trapped. Yeah, they're trapped.
- 1:15:04Here. Yeah.
- 1:15:05Yeah. So it's gonna remain a single
- 1:15:07location movie. Yes.
- 1:15:08Oh yeah, absolutely. That's part of the the scariness
- 1:15:11of it. OK, you can make that work.
- 1:15:15So Talia, she was pretty sleepy during this.
- 1:15:17Yeah, she was pretty sleepy. I think this scares her because
- 1:15:20she's allergic to a lot of nature.
- 1:15:22She is, but she is also super curious about all that nature,
- 1:15:26too. Yeah, she's not afraid to go
- 1:15:27sniff it. It's a problem.
- 1:15:29That's that's what's scary to her here is she'll sip that vine
- 1:15:32and it's just going to grow on her.
- 1:15:33Yeah, and it'll probably bark at her.
- 1:15:36It'll bark at her. It'll like tease her.
- 1:15:38Yeah. So it'll like mock, like the
- 1:15:40sound of like a bag of crackers opening.
- 1:15:42Oh, my God. She goes running for it.
- 1:15:44She's like, God, I'm so hungry. Yeah.
- 1:15:47So I think maybe Charlie would give this a nine because it
- 1:15:51sounds like Vine. OK, I think Zoe's ultimate
- 1:15:54warrior's queer here. I think it's the vines.
- 1:15:56Yeah, yeah, Zoe is also a Rascal who just wants to feed.
- 1:16:00Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
- 1:16:02OK, right. What would Dom Treto do?
- 1:16:06So I've been thinking about this and the whole thing is like he
- 1:16:11will swing on vines like in Fast and Furious 8, he's going to get
- 1:16:16a car and swing his way off of there.
- 1:16:19So are the vines going to become part of their family?
- 1:16:21Because they always take the enemy and turn them into part of
- 1:16:24the family. Tej and Cypher will like keep a
- 1:16:28sample and they'll weaponize it. Yes.
- 1:16:30Perfect. Yeah.
- 1:16:31But he's that's what I mean. All he needs is like a car on
- 1:16:34top, which Vin Diesel isn't walking to the top of the ruins.
- 1:16:37He drives to the top of the ruins.
- 1:16:39And then Bama Boy and Twinkie wanna take some of the vine and
- 1:16:45do some testing with it in space, see if it can grow in
- 1:16:48those conditions. Perfect.
- 1:16:50That's it. So that's.
- 1:16:51I mean, if you throw vines into the equation, Vin Diesel's gonna
- 1:16:54swing on them with a car. All right?
- 1:16:56That's just the easy answer. Did you?
- 1:16:57Say Cipher. Cipher is Shirley's throne.
- 1:17:01You. Think it's not Cipher Ramsey.
- 1:17:03Ramsey. Yeah.
- 1:17:04Ramsey, OK. Yeah.
- 1:17:05So yeah, I could see Ramsey and Tej doing some stance.
- 1:17:11Yeah, definitely. OK all.
- 1:17:13Right, all right, we got to attack one.
- 1:17:17OK, this vacation is ruined. That's good.
- 1:17:31I was going to like do something dumb like creeping terror or
- 1:17:34whatever, but. No, that's great.
- 1:17:36Too lame. That's perfect.
- 1:17:37I love that vacation's ruined so good man OK.
- 1:17:44OK. All right, so I think.
- 1:17:47We are. Who did you relate to?
- 1:17:49Yeah, that's it. I awaited to Eric, OK, I don't
- 1:17:55know. He doesn't at that age.
- 1:17:58I think I because like that's like right out of college.
- 1:18:00I feel for them. Yeah, they're, they're all about
- 1:18:03like 22. That's Jeff's about to go to Med
- 1:18:05school. It's implied they're all the
- 1:18:06same age. Yeah, I wasn't taking shit that
- 1:18:08seriously either. I was just kind of there to
- 1:18:10like, I was wanting to have fun, you know?
- 1:18:13Yeah, I mean, that's pretty much it.
- 1:18:19You don't want to see Jeff D. No, God, I don't relate to Jeff
- 1:18:22though. Yeah, I hope I'm not that much
- 1:18:24of a buzzkill. No, you just went to you
- 1:18:28furthered your ethic. Yeah, education.
- 1:18:34God, I guess I'd probably relate to Stacey because I feel like
- 1:18:38once I saw 1 vine in me, I would never be able to.
- 1:18:40I would never have peace again. Yeah, paranoid.
- 1:18:42That would be the same, yeah. Plus, we said that they seemed
- 1:18:46like a real fun couple, and I think we're like a real fun
- 1:18:49couple. I agree.
- 1:18:50Yeah, I I like, I like that. OK, cool.
- 1:18:54I've got a review. OK.
- 1:18:57And this was actually, this was interesting because a lot of
- 1:19:00times when you go to the one star reviews, it's people go
- 1:19:02like this may be stupid and you're like, OK, I don't know
- 1:19:05what to do with that. But this time I was like, this
- 1:19:07movie is different from the book.
- 1:19:08And here are the reasons I have problems with that.
- 1:19:10So that was actually pretty interesting to work with.
- 1:19:12So I've got one of those reviews.
- 1:19:14Cool, I respect that kind of take.
- 1:19:18This is a little bit longer than I normally do, but they brought
- 1:19:20up a lot of good points. That's fine, go for it.
- 1:19:22Love the book. The movie is severely lacking
- 1:19:25one out of 10. This was rated back in 2021, so
- 1:19:28more recent. I guess killer vines aren't easy
- 1:19:31to translate onto the big screen.
- 1:19:32I've read the book over and over since it came out when I was in
- 1:19:35high school. I love it so much that I own 2
- 1:19:37copies, a hardcover and a small portable copy.
- 1:19:39Many others who I have recommended it to really enjoy
- 1:19:43it. OK nerd. 2 copies.
- 1:19:47That's why it's so frustrating to see what a failure this movie
- 1:19:49was. Which is a shame since the
- 1:19:51author helped write most of the script.
- 1:19:53He swapped the characters around in the film and removed most if
- 1:19:55not all of their back story. I understand a movie cannot
- 1:19:58fully embody the essence of a book, but while reading you
- 1:20:00become familiar and somewhat attached to the characters,
- 1:20:02which allows you to relate with them in a chilling way that
- 1:20:04leaves you a bit unsettled when they're being tortured and
- 1:20:07killed off by the sentient plant.
- 1:20:08It is sentient. I'm not buying it.
- 1:20:11I'm not buying it. In the movie I could not bring
- 1:20:16myself to care about what happens to these people as I
- 1:20:18have 0 emotional investment to them nor do I even gain any
- 1:20:21interest in them as they are the most blank character as I've
- 1:20:23ever seen in a film besides Twilight.
- 1:20:25You ever watch Twilight? They could have discussed the
- 1:20:28hardships of no food or drink, missing their families, or
- 1:20:30spoken more about their hopes and dreams from when they get
- 1:20:32back home. Literally anything besides the
- 1:20:34wasted screen time of just staring at each other while
- 1:20:36showing limited emotional or realistic relation reactions to
- 1:20:39the events around them. What's worse, they not only
- 1:20:42stripped the characters of their personality and honestly divine
- 1:20:45of its personality in the book, but then shuffled them around
- 1:20:47for no discernible reason. It was done in a very first way
- 1:20:50that didn't feel natural, especially when their fates and
- 1:20:52form of death were also mismatched.
- 1:20:53In the book, the Greek is the one who breaks his back.
- 1:20:56This creates A haunting experience since we don't know
- 1:20:58what's wrong with him right away because he can't speak English
- 1:21:00to tell the others how severely he's hurt.
- 1:21:02Extra unsettling is the fact that he cannot communicate with
- 1:21:05any of them to consent having his legs amputated, creating a
- 1:21:07very squeamish and gut wrenching chapter in the book.
- 1:21:10The film adaptation removes this horrific factor by making
- 1:21:13Matthias the one to fall. They immediately figure out if
- 1:21:15Beck is back, and then Matthias begs the other to cut off his
- 1:21:17legs. That's only one example of many
- 1:21:19things that went wrong and caused this movie to fall
- 1:21:21completely flat. I won't even waste my time
- 1:21:23explaining how disappointed I was that the vines were
- 1:21:26laughable at best rather than terrifying entity described in
- 1:21:29the book. And lastly, the fact that Amy
- 1:21:31survives is an absolute joke. In the book, there are no
- 1:21:33survivors. A very chilling end to a
- 1:21:35depressing story. The whole we need a happy ending
- 1:21:37for the audience was the final unrealistic bow slapped on top
- 1:21:40of this flop of the film. They were going to choose to
- 1:21:43allow someone to survive and they should have included the
- 1:21:45unreleased ending which was much more haunting and realistic,
- 1:21:48showing how deadly and intrusive these vines are.
- 1:21:51Overall, I'm disappointed in Ben Stiller and Scott Smith.
- 1:21:54How dare you? Just overall, I'm disappointed
- 1:21:57in Ben Stiller Scott Smith for failing to create a movie that
- 1:22:02even suggests a proper attempt of doing the book any justice.
- 1:22:05Translating a far fetched idea onto the big screen is something
- 1:22:07that cannot be skimmed on. You have the money to do it and
- 1:22:09do it right, but this was not it.
- 1:22:11You know, I'm going to start doing that.
- 1:22:12I'm going to start like anytime anything's like I don't agree
- 1:22:16with the decision to movie. Why did you do this, Ben
- 1:22:18Stiller? I'm so disappointed in Ben
- 1:22:20Stiller. I think, yeah, I think some of
- 1:22:24those like deleted scenes in the alternate ending and the stuff
- 1:22:27we got in the unrated version, I think would have helped address
- 1:22:30some of those those concerns. Yeah, I can see that.
- 1:22:32And like I said, I'd need to reread the book to like, really
- 1:22:36analyze some of the decisions they made to switch around
- 1:22:39because I agree in the book it is absolutely like gut
- 1:22:43wrenching. All of the stuff that happens
- 1:22:45with Dmitri, when he falls and breaks his back, it's
- 1:22:47horrifying. I don't know how well it would
- 1:22:50translate to screen. That's the thing I like, I can't
- 1:22:53speak to that 'cause I haven't read the book, but from what
- 1:22:56I've heard from you and that person, like I can like, that
- 1:23:00does sound interesting. Like the language barrier there,
- 1:23:02something's wrong. You don't know what's wrong.
- 1:23:04That is scary. But I also agree with what you
- 1:23:06were saying before, like you need to be able to move that
- 1:23:09story because this is a movie. We got less time.
- 1:23:11Like if you make it Matthias then like we can get past that
- 1:23:15point quicker and it still has most of the effect.
- 1:23:18Yes, and it it also helps with other other characters
- 1:23:21developments as well. And I think that like if you
- 1:23:25know, we had it from a non book reader's perspective watching
- 1:23:28this movie and we see the Greek person would be like, wow, they
- 1:23:31just went straight to cutting this man's legs off.
- 1:23:33It would, I just don't think it would have translated as well
- 1:23:36because Jeff is cold and calculating in this moment and
- 1:23:39it really does come across as a lot more psychotic.
- 1:23:42If he does anything, yeah, that's like super psychotic.
- 1:23:44If they like, bring them. All right, The legs are getting
- 1:23:46out of here. Which you can have a lot more
- 1:23:48back and forth in the book. And it's just one of those
- 1:23:51things, and I get it. I am a book person for sure.
- 1:23:55But if you want to be a book in a movie person, you have to
- 1:23:58learn to kind of critically analyze why these changes are
- 1:24:01made. And if there are some that seem
- 1:24:04frivolous, absolutely call that out.
- 1:24:07That's fair. But, you know, sometimes they're
- 1:24:09not frivolous. Yeah.
- 1:24:11So. I mean, I'm sure the author of
- 1:24:13the book had his reasons for making these changes.
- 1:24:16Yes, I don't think anybody could be more attached to the
- 1:24:19characters than him. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:24:21Yeah. So all right.
- 1:24:23Well, whatever. I mean, those makes sense.
- 1:24:26Yeah. OK.
- 1:24:27Well. I really wish, I really wish
- 1:24:29Scott Smith had been part of the special features because they
- 1:24:32even had like a section in making The Ruins, Yeah, where
- 1:24:36they were talking about the differences between the movie
- 1:24:39and the book. It's weird that he wasn't, Yeah,
- 1:24:41brought in on that. Yeah, it is.
- 1:24:43It's a little bit. I would have liked to hear some
- 1:24:45of his rationale for things. OK, well let's see what other
- 1:24:49people think about this movie. I see.
- 1:24:52Yeah. All right, so let's start off
- 1:24:54with Lord Zombie, who says I don't care what anyone says,
- 1:24:58this was a good movie. So is this like a this movie
- 1:25:01have a reputation for not being good?
- 1:25:03It's I mean it's kind of got like mid reviews.
- 1:25:06It's a 5.9 on ITV. That's just shocking to me.
- 1:25:08I've always thought it's good. Again, I really think it comes
- 1:25:11from people who read the book and can't handle the differences
- 1:25:15between the book and the movie. OK, so he goes on to say the
- 1:25:19start was so so, but after they hit the ruins it got pretty
- 1:25:22good. The idea of the killer plants
- 1:25:24was pretty cool. I say give it a chance.
- 1:25:26That rhymed. Good job.
- 1:25:28Hey, way to go Salty Solo says. The Lexine always gets me crazy.
- 1:25:34Can't believe they just cut the leg that way.
- 1:25:36Yeah. That is so fucking gnarly.
- 1:25:38Yeah, that one. Like both Lexines, honestly.
- 1:25:42Yeah, I was going to say which one.
- 1:25:43Yeah, Matthias is big time, and also big time for Stacy's.
- 1:25:48That one is gnarly. And then Marnie, who says it's
- 1:25:52OK. Oh, OK.
- 1:25:53Right there on the IMDb yeah, line right there.
- 1:25:57And that's, you know, that's good.
- 1:25:58We got all of the. Yeah, the I got the full range.
- 1:26:01Yeah, we did. We hit it.
- 1:26:03All right. Well, thanks everybody for
- 1:26:04dropping the reviews. Absolutely.
- 1:26:05Yeah, definitely appreciate that.
- 1:26:07We had a lot of fun with this movie.
- 1:26:09We hope you guys did too. Next week we are discussing
- 1:26:13Smile. Yeah, smile.
- 1:26:15So be happy. Oh boy, yeah.
- 1:26:18You don't have a choice, you have to smile, which is just how
- 1:26:20that goes, unfortunately. I know for a fact you can watch
- 1:26:23this on Paramount. I'm pulling up the list just to
- 1:26:26double check. OK, so right now it's streaming
- 1:26:29on Paramount Plus, Netflix, Prime Premium, or you can rent
- 1:26:33it from YouTube, Google Play, Apple TV or Fandango at home.
- 1:26:36Yeah, so check it out if you haven't seen it.
- 1:26:39Definitely recommend giving that one.
- 1:26:40A watch. It's a really good one,
- 1:26:41honestly. Like we I thought it looked
- 1:26:44stupid based on the trails were like, oh man, it's a demon that
- 1:26:47smiles at you. And like, I think part of that
- 1:26:49to blame is the Blum House. Truth or dare?
- 1:26:53Yeah, well, yeah, they they fucked that one up.
- 1:26:56But it's actually really good. Maybe.
- 1:26:59Yeah, it's. Really good, yeah, give it a
- 1:27:01chance if you've just kind of been deterred by the premise,
- 1:27:05like and. If you need more prompting, I've
- 1:27:08got 2 words for you, Kyle. That's right, he is in that
- 1:27:13movie, yes. Yeah.
- 1:27:14OK. We want to go ahead and thank
- 1:27:17our Patreons, our Bubbies. Yeah, thank you guys.
- 1:27:19Bubbies. We have Joe.
