- 2:22Speaker 6: Want to welcome into the show now, Jason Huffon, Executive
- 2:24Speaker 6: director of Americans for Prosperity, Good morning, Welcome to the
- 2:27Speaker 6: show man.
- 2:28Speaker 7: Good morning, Dave, Thanks for having me.
- 2:29Speaker 4: What did you do with Crescent?
- 2:31Speaker 8: Uh?
- 2:31Speaker 7: Yeah, give him the day off? He gets one.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Everyone say Cressa and I go back.
- 2:35Speaker 6: He's a big Browns fan, you know, and so not
- 2:37Speaker 6: natural rivals to my cowboys. But still, you know, a
- 2:42Speaker 6: lot of heartbreak goes with both those teams.
- 2:44Speaker 7: I think, well, we'll try not to hold it against
- 2:46Speaker 7: either of you, either one of us.
- 2:48Speaker 6: So before we get into the serious stuff here, I
- 2:53Speaker 6: know you folks are incredibly busy and you're getting ready
- 2:55Speaker 6: for the election coming up in November. But any downtime
- 2:58Speaker 6: at all for mister Huffin, you got to do anything
- 3:01Speaker 6: fun this summer.
- 3:02Speaker 7: You know, Dave. Every day's vacation when you love your job.
- 3:04Speaker 4: Brother perfectly said.
- 3:08Speaker 7: But you know, you know, we like to get around,
- 3:09Speaker 7: get around the state a little bit, get around town.
- 3:12Speaker 7: Kind of a low key summer for us, doing some
- 3:15Speaker 7: renovations around the house. Actually, So that's uh, you know
- 3:17Speaker 7: how home ownership goes.
- 3:18Speaker 4: Yes, I do, Yes, I do.
- 3:20Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 3:20Speaker 6: My wife's very handy with things like that.
- 3:22Speaker 4: That's all I have to say about that.
- 3:23Speaker 6: So you're still out knocking on doors for your group.
- 3:26Speaker 7: We are, indeed, I tell you what, Dave, it's really
- 3:28Speaker 7: one of the most exciting times. And I've been giving
- 3:31Speaker 7: politics and policy for over a decade at this point,
- 3:34Speaker 7: and this is the most exciting time I think that
- 3:36Speaker 7: we've we've had. You know, historically speaking, West Virginia has
- 3:41Speaker 7: not had a first term day one Republican governor with
- 3:45Speaker 7: a super majority of Republicans in the legislature since before Prohibition. Okay,
- 3:50Speaker 7: so let that let that sink. Well, that's a little
- 3:52Speaker 7: bit opportunity that we have with what is likely going
- 3:55Speaker 7: to be probably the election of Patrick Morrissey as as
- 3:58Speaker 7: the state's next governor, is an opportunity to transform our
- 4:03Speaker 7: state from a policy perspective. You know, Patrick Morrisey often
- 4:06Speaker 7: talks about wanted to have a backyard brawl with the
- 4:09Speaker 7: states that we touch in terms of the laws we
- 4:13Speaker 7: have on the books, how much they advance freedom and
- 4:15Speaker 7: opportunity for for every West Virginia, and to compete for
- 4:19Speaker 7: those residents, to get people to want to be a
- 4:21Speaker 7: part of what we're doing here in West Virginia. And
- 4:23Speaker 7: I think you know what we're trying to do in
- 4:25Speaker 7: Americans for Prosperity with our Pathway to Prosperity Agenda twenty
- 4:29Speaker 7: twenty five is to provide a sort of common sense
- 4:33Speaker 7: policy roadmap for lawmakers that want to transform the state,
- 4:37Speaker 7: that want to really capture that historic opportunity.
- 4:40Speaker 6: Talk about some of the things that are on that agenda.
- 4:42Speaker 6: I know when the licetime christl was here we got
- 4:43Speaker 6: into a little bit. But when you're when you're talking
- 4:47Speaker 6: to legislators, whether there are people that are serving now
- 4:50Speaker 6: or whether it's you know there's there's new people coming in,
- 4:53Speaker 6: what are you telling them?
- 4:54Speaker 7: Well, first and foremost, I think we can't rest on
- 4:57Speaker 7: our laurels, right, I mean, wallmakers have done a lot
- 5:00Speaker 7: in terms of whether it's the historic largest tax cut
- 5:03Speaker 7: in state history, whether it's being the first state to
- 5:07Speaker 7: have a gold standard for educational freedom in the country
- 5:10Speaker 7: that now thirteen other states have adopted. There's been some
- 5:14Speaker 7: quality steps forward in terms of advancing freedom and opportunity
- 5:19Speaker 7: for people. But we've got to double down with the
- 5:22Speaker 7: landscape that we have right now. We've got to double down,
- 5:25Speaker 7: and so what we're asking lawmakers to do is to
- 5:27Speaker 7: be bold in a couple of key areas. One, when
- 5:31Speaker 7: it comes to taxes and spending, we've got to keep
- 5:33Speaker 7: lowering rates. We have to make government live within its means.
- 5:35Speaker 7: When it comes to healthcare, we've got to repeal certificate
- 5:38Speaker 7: of need laws so that we can have more affordable,
- 5:40Speaker 7: reliable health care. The regulatory structure that we have in
- 5:44Speaker 7: the state has really got to have a hard look
- 5:46Speaker 7: taken at it, because quite frankly, we're not being competitive
- 5:50Speaker 7: with a lot of our state.
- 5:51Speaker 6: Isn't it better though now than what it used to be?
- 5:53Speaker 6: In your opinion, it certainly is? But hey, good, good
- 5:56Speaker 6: better best never let it rest, right, I mean, that's
- 5:58Speaker 6: where we're at. So I think we're encouraging lawmakers to
- 6:02Speaker 6: aim for much much better. Talking again with Jason Huffman,
- 6:05Speaker 6: the executive director of Americans for Prosperity. This morning, The
- 6:08Speaker 6: Dave Island Show on five eighty Live broad toom parted
- 6:11Speaker 6: by Husband's Pizza. This month at your favorite Hustans, get
- 6:13Speaker 6: a large eighteen inch Pepperoni pizza and an eight inch
- 6:16Speaker 6: chocolate chip cookie for only twenty three ninety nine. You
- 6:19Speaker 6: mentioned the upcoming election, and it's conventional wisdom and anything
- 6:24Speaker 6: can happen. That's why you have elections, like in sports,
- 6:26Speaker 6: that's why you play the game. But most people think
- 6:29Speaker 6: that Patrick Morrissey is going to be elected governor of
- 6:33Speaker 6: West Virginia. And I know Steve Williams. Steve Williams has
- 6:37Speaker 6: been on the show numerous times. I think Steve's a
- 6:39Speaker 6: good guy.
- 6:40Speaker 4: I really really do.
- 6:41Speaker 6: But most people think, especially with the bright red that
- 6:45Speaker 6: is now West Virginia, then whomever the Republican is is
- 6:48Speaker 6: going to be governor. But you guys kind of came
- 6:50Speaker 6: out early for Patrick Morrissey.
- 6:52Speaker 7: Yeah, we certainly did. I mean it was a crowded
- 6:54Speaker 7: primary field. There were several people on that ballot that again,
- 6:59Speaker 7: everybody the race is a good guy, right, But Patrick
- 7:02Speaker 7: Morrissey just has such a clear vision for wanting to
- 7:05Speaker 7: transform the state for the better. And I think that he,
- 7:09Speaker 7: you know, through his work as Attorney General, has demonstrated
- 7:13Speaker 7: this kind of fervor for change and making sure that
- 7:18Speaker 7: West Virginians are better off as a result of the
- 7:21Speaker 7: work that he does every single day. And so we
- 7:23Speaker 7: got into that race early and endorsed him for governor.
- 7:27Speaker 7: And like you said, the political landscape in the state
- 7:30Speaker 7: read and getting redder, I think probably would be an
- 7:32Speaker 7: understatement to some extent. You're going to have over ninety
- 7:36Speaker 7: Republicans out of one hundred in the House of Delegates.
- 7:39Speaker 7: In the state Senate, I think maybe we'll have maybe
- 7:42Speaker 7: we'll have two Democrats. So I think as far as
- 7:47Speaker 7: Republican politics in the state goes, certainly a sea change
- 7:49Speaker 7: from what we saw a little over ten years ago
- 7:52Speaker 7: when when the state turned red. However, I would say that,
- 7:56Speaker 7: you know, not all Republicans are created equally in terms
- 7:59Speaker 7: of their policy positions. And like I said, again, you
- 8:03Speaker 7: want lawmakers. I think voters have demonstrated that they want
- 8:06Speaker 7: lawmakers that don't tinker around the margins, they want bold,
- 8:09Speaker 7: transformational changes. Those are the folks that keep getting elected.
- 8:12Speaker 7: And I hope lawmakers pay attention to that now.
- 8:14Speaker 6: You're technically a nonpartisan organization, I mean, a non you
- 8:18Speaker 6: don't necessarily you don't have a Republican you know, agenda,
- 8:23Speaker 6: so to speak. But it just happens that a lot
- 8:25Speaker 6: of your polities policies do fall in line with the
- 8:28Speaker 6: basic core principles of the Republican Party.
- 8:30Speaker 7: Yeah, I think I think that's right. Well, it's the
- 8:32Speaker 7: old Frederick Douglas quote where he said, essentially, or work
- 8:35Speaker 7: with anybody to accomplish.
- 8:36Speaker 6: Good And so I think it's interesting. And you're somebody
- 8:40Speaker 6: that has followed this, you know, for a long long time,
- 8:44Speaker 6: and that is this shift that we saw in West
- 8:47Speaker 6: Virginia starting. It started before Trump. I mean it really did.
- 8:50Speaker 6: It started in you know, twenty twenty twenty fourteen is
- 8:56Speaker 6: what it started. But it's actually just starting to see
- 8:58Speaker 6: seeds of that even before that. And as you said,
- 9:00Speaker 6: it just keeps getting redder and redder and redder. And
- 9:04Speaker 6: you never want to say never. But I don't know
- 9:06Speaker 6: what it's going to change. You know, I'm an old guy,
- 9:08Speaker 6: older than you. I don't know if it's going to
- 9:10Speaker 6: change during my lifetime.
- 9:11Speaker 7: Well, I mean it certainly got a lot of runway.
- 9:13Speaker 7: I think probably twenty or so years. But you're right
- 9:15Speaker 7: I did start back. I think probably during the first
- 9:19Speaker 7: Bush election for president, and then obviously I think the
- 9:23Speaker 7: Obama era of politics, in which the Democratic Party became
- 9:29Speaker 7: much more radical and much more i would say, far
- 9:33Speaker 7: left in terms of their policy leanings, particularly on the
- 9:36Speaker 7: cultural side. I've talked to a lot of people with
- 9:39Speaker 7: the Doorstep that are former Democrats Dave that have switched
- 9:42Speaker 7: to either Republican or Independent that are just saying, listen,
- 9:44Speaker 7: the party left me. I don't know what happened. This
- 9:47Speaker 7: is not the party of JFK anymore. It's a part
- 9:49Speaker 7: of a much more radical and progressive left, and people
- 9:53Speaker 7: don't like that here, so they obviously have switched. Teams.
- 9:56Speaker 6: Got a couple of texts you were ready to take on.
- 9:58Speaker 6: Some text team sure Tex says, what is in your
- 10:01Speaker 6: experience in healthcare? What has been your experience Jason that
- 10:04Speaker 6: led you to want certificate of need gone? And how
- 10:06Speaker 6: do current small independent access hospitals feel about that? Wouldn't
- 10:11Speaker 6: they be in jeopardy of if a big health system
- 10:13Speaker 6: is set up were to set up shop next to them.
- 10:16Speaker 7: Well, first of all, I think we could assuage some
- 10:18Speaker 7: fears regarding repeal of certificate inded and just so, folks,
- 10:21Speaker 7: No Certificate and need allows unelected bureaucrats to decide whether
- 10:24Speaker 7: you get a new hospital service, or healthcare service, or
- 10:27Speaker 7: expanded healthcare service in your community. It's something that was
- 10:32Speaker 7: set up in the nineteen seventies. Essentially the federal government
- 10:35Speaker 7: mandated that all states put it in place. Many states
- 10:39Speaker 7: have repealed it, we have not yet. And there's a
- 10:41Speaker 7: reason that the Department of Justice under both Republican and
- 10:44Speaker 7: Democrat administrations has said that states should repeal their certificate
- 10:49Speaker 7: of need laws because it's anti competition. It allows existing
- 10:54Speaker 7: healthcare providers to veto essentially competition coming into the area.
- 10:59Speaker 7: And we know and while healthcare is not necessarily a
- 11:02Speaker 7: full on free market because of federal involvement in it,
- 11:07Speaker 7: I would say that to some extent competition, as we know,
- 11:10Speaker 7: we'll drive down prices, increase quality, generally make things better.
- 11:15Speaker 7: And I think that our healthcare practitioners and our communities
- 11:17Speaker 7: know when their community needs something, So let's trust them
- 11:21Speaker 7: and allow them to do their work.
- 11:22Speaker 4: A couple more techs before we let you go.
- 11:24Speaker 6: AFP and Americans for Prosperity name the agencies and number
- 11:27Speaker 6: of government workers you want fired?
- 11:29Speaker 4: Do you want somebody fired?
- 11:30Speaker 7: I don't necessarily think that's a pretty blunt question, but
- 11:34Speaker 7: I mean, obviously, if there are pieces of the bureaucracy
- 11:38Speaker 7: that are not functioning as they probably should, then yeah,
- 11:43Speaker 7: maybe maybe there will be some folks that are phased
- 11:45Speaker 7: out of their employment. That's just the fact of the matter.
- 11:49Speaker 7: But I will say that we haven't really had an
- 11:51Speaker 7: opportunity to kick the tires on governance in this state,
- 11:55Speaker 7: to look at it from a practicality level and say,
- 11:57Speaker 7: are we following best practices in terms of governments? Why
- 12:00Speaker 7: are why are we operating in some form and fashion
- 12:04Speaker 7: that we do now currently? So hey, we get to
- 12:07Speaker 7: be introspective for a while, and I think that's a
- 12:09Speaker 7: good thing for taxpayers.
- 12:10Speaker 6: You guys don't really get into national politics that often.
- 12:13Speaker 6: I mean, you obviously you study it and you look
- 12:16Speaker 6: at it, but you don't You're more concerned with with
- 12:17Speaker 6: West Virginia, with with Senate rates and governors things that nature, right.
- 12:21Speaker 7: I mean, I think obviously we we do a lot
- 12:23Speaker 7: of work at the federal level in.
- 12:25Speaker 4: Terms of policy.
- 12:26Speaker 6: So the reason I ask is because somebody asked about
- 12:28Speaker 6: an endorsement of Trump that was a text or is
- 12:31Speaker 6: that something that you want to get into, because the
- 12:33Speaker 6: actual text says uh.
- 12:34Speaker 5: Do you.
- 12:36Speaker 6: Still pretend that they don't that they don't that they
- 12:39Speaker 6: don't want you to vote for a sex abuser for president?
- 12:42Speaker 7: Well, actually, I would say that Americans for Prosperity Action
- 12:44Speaker 7: endorsed Nicky Haley in the primary for president.
- 12:48Speaker 9: Uh.
- 12:48Speaker 7: And obviously you know, uh, Donald J. Trump is the
- 12:51Speaker 7: one that that won the nomination, and so that's the
- 12:54Speaker 7: that's the guy who's running. We are focused at Americans
- 12:57Speaker 7: for Prosperity Action on US Senate races and make sure
- 13:00Speaker 7: that principled leaders are in charge of that chamber.
- 13:03Speaker 6: Do you think that the governor's financial issues are going
- 13:07Speaker 6: to herd him in that race?
- 13:09Speaker 7: I honest, I don't think so. I don't think folks.
- 13:11Speaker 4: I agree with you, because I mean people don't seem
- 13:13Speaker 4: to care.
- 13:14Speaker 7: No, I don't think they do. I mean, listen, he's
- 13:16Speaker 7: he's a force. He is a force of nature in
- 13:19Speaker 7: terms of his political popularity in the state. And so no,
- 13:24Speaker 7: I don't think that's gonna slow him down at all.
- 13:26Speaker 6: All right, give us a lowdown again on your group
- 13:28Speaker 6: of Americans for prosperity. People want to learn more about it.
- 13:30Speaker 6: What's the basic core principles behind it?

- 16:29Speaker 6: I'm sure he'll I'm sure he'll enjoy that. Well, it's
- 16:32Speaker 6: a plan for affordable healthcare, says textor. Trump tried to
- 16:35Speaker 6: eliminate it. Thankfully he failed, like he does at almost
- 16:37Speaker 6: everything he touches. So the majority says, the texture of
- 16:43Speaker 6: West Virginia is going to vote for an adulterous child
- 16:46Speaker 6: molester for president, a fraud businessman who doesn't pay taxes
- 16:49Speaker 6: or vendors as a senator, and a carpetbagger opioid lobbyist
- 16:53Speaker 6: for governor. I'm embarrassed to be a citizen of West Virginia,
- 16:56Speaker 6: says a Texter. Let's welcome in, Brad Michael Hint. Now, Brad,
- 17:00Speaker 6: good morning.
- 17:01Speaker 4: How are you, sir?
- 17:02Speaker 5: Good morning? Dave?
- 17:03Speaker 4: Hi, Hey, that was a nice description, there wasn't I mean?
- 17:05Speaker 6: I mean, uh, an adulterous child molester, fraud businessman who
- 17:09Speaker 6: doesn't pay taxes or venitor or as a senator, and carpetbager,
- 17:13Speaker 6: opioid lobbyist for governor. That's pretty pretty intense man.
- 17:18Speaker 5: When you when you put it that way, I guess
- 17:21Speaker 5: you're not going to see any billboards here to.
- 17:24Speaker 6: Well, not by the candidates, maybe by their their their opposition.
- 17:28Speaker 6: So before we go any further, Brad, I got to
- 17:31Speaker 6: address the proverbial elephant in the proverbial room. Do you
- 17:35Speaker 6: want to you want to address what has happened now
- 17:37Speaker 6: between you and the governor?
- 17:38Speaker 4: I mean, what what's up with this?
- 17:39Speaker 7: Man?
- 17:41Speaker 5: Uh? Well, how should I address it?
- 17:46Speaker 4: There's not a whole lot for you to address, right.
- 17:48Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean it's really it's really silence on the
- 17:51Speaker 5: governor's end. So that's what makes it a little bit
- 17:54Speaker 5: hard that they don't really anymore chew me out or
- 17:59Speaker 5: state and you know, there's no pushback, it's just silence.
- 18:07Speaker 5: So to catch listeners off, I guess five weeks ago now,
- 18:13Speaker 5: I asked a question during the governor's briefing about a
- 18:17Speaker 5: federal case a judge in Delaware who put in an
- 18:21Speaker 5: order moving a significant portion of governor justices family coal
- 18:29Speaker 5: businesses toward a forced sale. This is Bluestone Mineral, a
- 18:34Speaker 5: holding company for other businesses, and it's meant to satisfy
- 18:40Speaker 5: debt by at least one entity. But the repercussion is
- 18:47Speaker 5: that others who the justices, could get in line and
- 18:52Speaker 5: sake a claim to whatever whatever comes from the liquidation
- 18:57Speaker 5: potentially of that business. I thought it was a fair question,
- 19:02Speaker 5: you know, I really wanted to hear the governor's take
- 19:06Speaker 5: on it. I thought, you know, asking him was actually
- 19:10Speaker 5: the fair thing to do. But he he got upset.
- 19:14Speaker 5: H described it as a hit piece. I will when
- 19:17Speaker 5: when he describes it that way, I will remind you
- 19:19Speaker 5: and the listeners. I did not make the federal judge
- 19:22Speaker 5: in Delaware uh move toward putting these Justice companies up
- 19:26Speaker 5: for liquidation. That that was not something I actually had
- 19:29Speaker 5: control over. The Next time there was a briefing, I
- 19:33Speaker 5: asked about Justice properties in Riley County, Monroe County, and
- 19:40Speaker 5: McDowell County being put up for sale because of unpaid taxes. Again,
- 19:47Speaker 5: I had no influence over the local tax authorities. And
- 19:53Speaker 5: you don't get your property put up in a tax
- 19:56Speaker 5: sale right away. A lot of time goes by, you
- 19:59Speaker 5: get a lot of warning, and those property taxes go
- 20:03Speaker 5: for things that Justice says he supports like local schools.
- 20:08Speaker 5: I asked him about that, and I, looking back, I
- 20:11Speaker 5: guess that was the last straw, because he said to
- 20:13Speaker 5: me that day, Brad, I don't even know why we
- 20:15Speaker 5: take your questions, and then said that he didn't know
- 20:18Speaker 5: anything about those tax issues. The next three times there
- 20:24Speaker 5: was a briefing I put in. You know, so what
- 20:27Speaker 5: the process is that the Governor's office sends out notifications
- 20:32Speaker 5: that they're even having a briefing, and then you, the reporter,
- 20:35Speaker 5: are SVP and say I want to do it. So
- 20:39Speaker 5: I had other questions, uh, most recently about pe i
- 20:43Speaker 5: a uh, you know, more government focused questions, and I've
- 20:48Speaker 5: I've the past three briefing has not gotten any kind
- 20:51Speaker 5: of response.
- 20:54Speaker 13: Uh.
- 20:54Speaker 5: You know, I when I talk about this, I don't
- 20:56Speaker 5: mean to be whining. It's it's not just about me,
- 20:59Speaker 5: but the governor, I take it, has decided that some
- 21:03Speaker 5: questions are off limits and therefore some reporters me will
- 21:08Speaker 5: not be allowed to participate. To me, that diminishes the
- 21:12Speaker 5: value of the briefing overall. And he can respond and
- 21:17Speaker 5: does respond any way he wants, but it's not up
- 21:21Speaker 5: to him, to my mind, what the subject matter of
- 21:26Speaker 5: the questions is furthermore, you know, we've learned in recent
- 21:30Speaker 5: weeks that to me, those were serious enough. I mean,
- 21:35Speaker 5: a judge saying your your business, your coal properties are
- 21:39Speaker 5: going to be auctioned off, or your tracts of land
- 21:46Speaker 5: in three counties in West Virginia with county officials saying
- 21:50Speaker 5: you're going to be auctioned off, I thought those were serious.
- 21:53Speaker 5: The announcement of the foreclosure of the Greenbrier and being put
- 21:59Speaker 5: up a tax auction, well not tax auction, but being
- 22:02Speaker 5: put up at auction on the county courthouse steps. I mean,
- 22:06Speaker 5: that's a whole other level. And it just streams credulity
- 22:11Speaker 5: for the governor to say, oh, these questions about my finances,
- 22:16Speaker 5: they are they're fake news. Everything turns out all right
- 22:20Speaker 5: in the end. I mean, to be told that and
- 22:23Speaker 5: then the next week the Green Broner is being foreclosed upon,
- 22:27Speaker 5: I mean, it just cammers home that it's a silly
- 22:29Speaker 5: position to take.
- 22:30Speaker 6: Doct to Brad mcklhaney and on I think it was
- 22:32Speaker 6: Monday Show, Brad I talked a little bit about the
- 22:34Speaker 6: op ed piece that Phil Kabler did in the Gazette
- 22:37Speaker 6: Mail on Saturday, and I to be honest, I rarely
- 22:42Speaker 6: ever agree with a lot of what Phil Kbler says.
- 22:44Speaker 6: Don't know the guy, but I just, you know, we
- 22:46Speaker 6: have the difference of opinion on a lot of things. However,
- 22:49Speaker 6: he brought up the fact that, or brought up the
- 22:51Speaker 6: question what if the press opted to just not cover
- 22:56Speaker 6: the conferences, just just boycott them. I mean, I don't
- 22:59Speaker 6: I don't think that's going to happen. But what would
- 23:03Speaker 6: you say to that?
- 23:05Speaker 5: You know, I think we have a professional obligation to
- 23:08Speaker 5: ask the governor questions. A couple of briefings ago, when
- 23:11Speaker 5: I was sitting it out, the governor did not address
- 23:18Speaker 5: during his opening remarks the resignation of Mark Scott, the
- 23:22Speaker 5: administration secretary, who was over who was over during his
- 23:27Speaker 5: tenure a variety of state contractual matters, but during the
- 23:33Speaker 5: last few months of his tenure had a second job
- 23:39Speaker 5: leading a political action committee and raising funds for that
- 23:43Speaker 5: political action that political committee. The Governor didn't address that
- 23:49Speaker 5: at all, and instead talked about a splash pad that
- 23:53Speaker 5: had recently been installed. All right, good for the slash pad.
- 24:00Speaker 5: My fellow reporters asked the governor when it was their
- 24:03Speaker 5: chance three or four questions about the conflict of interest
- 24:07Speaker 5: and how the administration dealt with with Mark Scott, and
- 24:11Speaker 5: none of that would have been illuminated if they had
- 24:14Speaker 5: not asked. So I mean, I think that there is
- 24:17Speaker 5: still benefit of at least posing the questions to him,
- 24:22Speaker 5: and then you know, it's a limited forum. He can
- 24:26Speaker 5: answer how he wants. Sometimes it's a rant, Sometimes it
- 24:30Speaker 5: bounces off in some other direction. Sometimes he will belittle
- 24:34Speaker 5: the reporter and the question. But at least you've asked,
- 24:36Speaker 5: at least you've gotten it out there, and otherwise you know,
- 24:39Speaker 5: he's just going to do briefings and talk about splash pads.
- 24:43Speaker 4: We all like splash pads, though, brand right, we do.
- 24:46Speaker 5: You know. The final thing, I will say that reporters
- 24:50Speaker 5: are are cats, and I mean maybe some of us
- 24:54Speaker 5: would would opt out of participating, but the I'll though
- 25:00Speaker 5: people think of reporters as operating in a pack sometimes
- 25:04Speaker 5: that does take place with hot news stories. There really
- 25:08Speaker 5: is no collusion among us, and I mean there's no
- 25:13Speaker 5: there's no I have no expectation that I'm going to
- 25:16Speaker 5: influence TV reporters from north central West Virginia. I just
- 25:21Speaker 5: don't think that that organizing some sort of group boycott
- 25:24Speaker 5: is truly realistic given the independent nature.
- 25:27Speaker 4: Of our profession.
- 25:28Speaker 6: There's not a union, that's what you're saying. There's no
- 25:30Speaker 6: there's no union of reporters all gathering togethering.
- 25:34Speaker 5: There are no Justice League meetings of reporters now.
- 25:37Speaker 6: But here's the thing, and I'll get away from the
- 25:39Speaker 6: press aspect of for a moment. I mean, and Jason
- 25:41Speaker 6: Huffman of Americans for Prosperity and I talked about it
- 25:45Speaker 6: a lot of these financial issues with the goather though, Brad,
- 25:48Speaker 6: it doesn't seem that the public cares. I mean, you know,
- 25:51Speaker 6: the guy is just so so popular, and that's that's fine.
- 25:54Speaker 6: I mean, but it's like that they don't to Hobby show.
- 25:57Speaker 6: Yesterday somebody texted and referred to I think he was
- 26:00Speaker 6: actually addressed and Hoby directly by telling him he had
- 26:04Speaker 6: justice derangement syndrome, which that's a new one. I've heard
- 26:07Speaker 6: of tds. I'd never heard of JDS. But doesn't seem
- 26:11Speaker 6: to care.
- 26:12Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, we have no control over public perception, right.
- 26:15Speaker 5: We are in a very partisan era of society, and
- 26:20Speaker 5: so it sometimes feels like people just put on their
- 26:23Speaker 5: jerseys and don't necessarily give any mind to the actions
- 26:30Speaker 5: or the details, I will say that I think that
- 26:34Speaker 5: there is, if not public interest, a public interest. So
- 26:42Speaker 5: when I say that the Justice companies are having their
- 26:45Speaker 5: land sold off because they have not paid their property
- 26:49Speaker 5: taxes in Raleigh, McDowell and Nonuroe County, that affects the
- 26:54Speaker 5: citizens there. That's the local schools, the local fire departments,
- 26:59Speaker 5: the things that the governor says that he he he
- 27:03Speaker 5: backs and appreciates and wants to support. The green Brier
- 27:09Speaker 5: is way behind on its sales taxes. Any other merchant
- 27:13Speaker 5: Toby and Edith would would have to to remit those
- 27:17Speaker 5: sales taxes to the state the government. The green Brier
- 27:21Speaker 5: is behind by three million dollars has has had. The
- 27:25Speaker 5: State Tax Department, which is in the Justice Administration, put
- 27:29Speaker 5: leans on the Green Brier over those unpaid sales taxes.
- 27:37Speaker 5: It is it is both a tax obligation that could
- 27:42Speaker 5: go to pay for things that the government governor says
- 27:46Speaker 5: he supports in state government as well as you know,
- 27:51Speaker 5: potentially a conflict between the ownership of the Green Brier
- 27:54Speaker 5: and the management of the State Tax Department. So you know, again,
- 27:59Speaker 5: all all we can do is report and put it
- 28:02Speaker 5: out there for people to interpret how they may. But
- 28:07Speaker 5: you know, if people are interested or not, you know,
- 28:12Speaker 5: that's only one factor in the reporting.
- 28:14Speaker 6: Right exactly before we let you go, what are you
- 28:16Speaker 6: actually reporting on other than the governor?
- 28:18Speaker 4: Today? What's on your radar today?
- 28:20Speaker 5: Brand news hit a wall yesterday? Jeff Jiggins is going
- 28:26Speaker 5: down here in the next hour to cover a couple
- 28:30Speaker 5: of former corrections officers who are accused in the death
- 28:36Speaker 5: of Quantes Berks in the Southern Regional Jail, a beating
- 28:40Speaker 5: death where up to eight corrections officers at that jail
- 28:44Speaker 5: face charges. This will be two of four of those
- 28:49Speaker 5: who now have pleaded guilty. So that's a significant news
- 28:52Speaker 5: story today. We have our ears to the ground about
- 28:56Speaker 5: what is going to happen with the Greenbrier. You know,
- 29:00Speaker 5: I talk about it. It's a little bit in financial
- 29:03Speaker 5: and political terms, but certainly the employees and the residents
- 29:09Speaker 5: of that area it would depend on the Green Brier
- 29:12Speaker 5: for its economic benefits, are quite worried about what's going
- 29:17Speaker 5: to happen, and it's I don't know it very well.
- 29:22Speaker 5: May go to auction as intended on August twenty seventh,
- 29:27Speaker 5: but you know, a better solution where there will be
- 29:30Speaker 5: more control over what happens might be to sell it
- 29:33Speaker 5: before that, to agree to terms with an entity where
- 29:40Speaker 5: you've got a little more command over the sale price
- 29:43Speaker 5: and the nature of that entity. So our interest are
- 29:46Speaker 5: to the ground about that. But I am certainly not
- 29:48Speaker 5: telling you that there's any kind of impending news. It's
- 29:51Speaker 5: just an ongoing news interest in what is going on
- 29:55Speaker 5: with the green Brier?
- 29:56Speaker 2: All right?
- 29:57Speaker 4: Hashtag free bread? You like it? Free bread?
- 30:01Speaker 5: No, you know the pressure is off me if I
- 30:03Speaker 5: don't have to participate in these briefings. They are terrible.
- 30:07Speaker 5: They are always lace, sometimes up to an hour. The
- 30:12Speaker 5: governor's version of news is usually about taxes, trout or tourism,
- 30:18Speaker 5: very late stuff, and he will typically not really answer
- 30:22Speaker 5: the questions posed to him. So please please don't put
- 30:27Speaker 5: me back in those briefings.
- 30:29Speaker 6: Okay, be careful what you wish for, all right, band, Brad,
- 30:33Speaker 6: I appreciate you being here, band, thanks a lot.
- 30:35Speaker 5: Thanks.

- 32:04Speaker 6: Law School poll, and I don't know exactly who they
- 32:06Speaker 6: pulled and where they pulled them whatever, fifty three to
- 32:09Speaker 6: forty seven.
- 32:09Speaker 4: That is, that has.

- 35:17Speaker 17: They got into several arguments and fights. He had at
- 35:21Speaker 17: times picked up a gun pointed at her, threatening to
- 35:24Speaker 17: shoot her. The argument got heated and at some point
- 35:30Speaker 17: it got to the point that he pointed it at
- 35:33Speaker 17: her and then the guests, they're the host of the
- 35:36Speaker 17: that had invited him, he got involved and he and
- 35:39Speaker 17: Perkins started fighting. Perkins put down the gun. The girlfriend
- 35:43Speaker 17: then apparently picked up the gun shot him, and it
- 35:46Speaker 17: was a fatal A fatally shot him. Perkins is now
- 35:49Speaker 17: dead and authorities are still investigating. Charleston Police say that
- 35:53Speaker 17: the girlfriend was taken to the hospital for treatment. Of
- 35:57Speaker 17: multiple injuries that she had received in the altar. She
- 36:01Speaker 17: remains in stable condition and this time no charges have
- 36:04Speaker 17: been filed, but they are going to pass the investigation
- 36:07Speaker 17: over and all the evidence to the prosecutor's office to
- 36:10Speaker 17: determine if any charges are to be filed in this incident.
- 36:13Speaker 17: So very tragic situation there on Grace Avenue this morning
- 36:18Speaker 17: is what started as verbal altercations and threats turned into
- 36:23Speaker 17: a shooting death.
- 36:24Speaker 6: And it could be could very well be that they're
- 36:27Speaker 6: going for self defense in this possibly, I know we're not,
- 36:29Speaker 6: we're not going to play lawyers, but possibly a.
- 36:32Speaker 17: Lot of times when when when you hear the police
- 36:35Speaker 17: say that they have not filed charges, they're going to
- 36:37Speaker 17: pass it over to the prosecutor to review, they sort
- 36:39Speaker 17: of leave that to the discretion of the prosecutor that
- 36:41Speaker 17: there might be a question about that, and and that's
- 36:44Speaker 17: usually what that indicates. So and it will be at
- 36:48Speaker 17: the purview of the prosecutor as to whether anyone should
- 36:50Speaker 17: face charges.
- 36:50Speaker 6: Tragic story. You the way, Chris, I appreciate you being here.

- 43:43Speaker 6: tex says, where's Kenny Bass been hiding out while Big
- 43:46Speaker 6: Jim is stiffing banks and employees and small businesses not
- 43:49Speaker 6: paying insurance premiums for retired workers. Can't he get a backbone? Well,
- 43:53Speaker 6: I can't.
- 43:53Speaker 4: I can't speak for Kenny Bass, don't.
- 43:55Speaker 6: I don't know, But I mean, Kenny does a great
- 43:57Speaker 6: job with what he does, so I'm sure. I'm sure
- 43:59Speaker 6: he's always got his eye on something related to that.
- 44:03Speaker 6: So there you go, Kenny, if you're listening, you have
- 44:06Speaker 6: a challenge today. Somebody wants you to look into it
- 44:08Speaker 6: for although I don't know what more could be uncovered
- 44:10Speaker 6: with the justice financial situation, And again, it all goes
- 44:14Speaker 6: back to the fact of and it's not. As Brad
- 44:16Speaker 6: I think wisely pointed out, it is the job of
- 44:19Speaker 6: the media to put it out there, but it's not
- 44:21Speaker 6: our job to tell people what you should think about it.
- 44:23Speaker 6: And the majority of the people in West Virginia simply
- 44:27Speaker 6: don't care. So the media does the job of putting
- 44:30Speaker 6: it out there, whether it's Brad or whether it's Steven
- 44:32Speaker 6: Allen Adams or anybody, any of the find news media
- 44:34Speaker 6: we have in the state. They put it out there.
- 44:36Speaker 6: But if the bubblic that doesn't care, then that's on
- 44:39Speaker 6: them and it's not the media's job to tell them
- 44:41Speaker 6: they should care.
- 44:41Speaker 4: Can you put it out here? You do with it?
- 44:43Speaker 6: You do with it to what you want. I want
- 44:46Speaker 6: to follow up do a little follow up from yesterday's show.
- 44:49Speaker 6: I had on Rob Cunningham, who was the president of
- 44:51Speaker 6: the Putnam County Board of Education, and we were talking about,
- 44:54Speaker 6: among other things, the growth of Putnam County and the
- 44:58Speaker 6: influx of students I mean into the school system. And
- 45:02Speaker 6: we had a text to the show after mister Cunningham
- 45:04Speaker 6: had left, and the texture asked a question about and
- 45:08Speaker 6: I had the text pulled up here. I'll see if
- 45:09Speaker 6: I can ask Okay, here this is the actual text,
- 45:11Speaker 6: the text that asked Cunningham how they have adjusted staffing
- 45:15Speaker 6: on the northern side of the river due to the
- 45:16Speaker 6: enrollment drops. Fact says the Texter Putnam County has lost
- 45:20Speaker 6: over eight hundred students in the last ten years, and
- 45:23Speaker 6: mister Cunningham had already left, but he obviously was listening
- 45:27Speaker 6: because I got a text.
- 45:29Speaker 4: I got a text to the show with some facts
- 45:31Speaker 4: and figures.
- 45:31Speaker 6: He texted me and said, I'm going to have you
- 45:33Speaker 6: some figures later in the day, and he did. He
- 45:36Speaker 6: got him last night, as a matter of fact, So
- 45:38Speaker 6: I thought I would that I would just kind of
- 45:41Speaker 6: follow up on this now. The proposed levy, if approved
- 45:46Speaker 6: by voters in Putnam County, would do a number of
- 45:48Speaker 6: things to facilities around the county, with one of those
- 45:52Speaker 6: being the construction of a new middle school for Hurricane.
- 45:56Speaker 6: That school is they hat some age on it, definitely.
- 46:00Speaker 6: President Cunningham provided me through the Putnam Candy Board of
- 46:04Speaker 6: Education with the enrollment for Hurricane Middle School going back
- 46:09Speaker 6: to the two thousand and eight, two thousand and nine
- 46:11Speaker 6: school year all the way to this year. Now, the
- 46:13Speaker 6: peak year for enrollment for this particular school, twenty seventeen
- 46:17Speaker 6: to twenty eighteen. That was the school year that they
- 46:19Speaker 6: had the most students, with oney thirteen. This year they
- 46:24Speaker 6: sat at eight hundred and thirty eight. So the text
- 46:30Speaker 6: is right, and of course the texture was referring I
- 46:32Speaker 6: think to the northern side of the river. But we'll
- 46:34Speaker 6: talk about the entire county. The numbers have gone down
- 46:39Speaker 6: as far as enrollment goes, but so is every public
- 46:42Speaker 6: school because here's here's the bottom line. Parents for one
- 46:49Speaker 6: reason or another are simply not sending their kids to
- 46:53Speaker 6: public schools as much as they used to all over
- 46:56Speaker 6: West Virginia. I mean, you know, an old guy speaking
- 46:59Speaker 6: here back. You know, when I was a kid, you
- 47:01Speaker 6: went to public school, or there was like one one
- 47:03Speaker 6: other Christian school in the county where I grew up,
- 47:06Speaker 6: and that was it. And but now there are so
- 47:08Speaker 6: many more options, and COVID, I think, really really laid
- 47:14Speaker 6: a lot of options out on the line, and parents,
- 47:16Speaker 6: some parents found that they want to go a different direction,
- 47:19Speaker 6: be that a virtual virtual academies, charter schools, private schools,
- 47:23Speaker 6: home schooling. There's just a lot of options out there.
- 47:28Speaker 6: And it is also worth noting though that the population
- 47:32Speaker 6: of Putnam County is expected to grow a lot. It
- 47:35Speaker 6: already is with with new Core in the next county
- 47:39Speaker 6: over in Mason County, it's already started, as as I said,
- 47:43Speaker 6: And there's a proposed Amazon facility in Fraser's Bottom. So
- 47:47Speaker 6: there's gonna be a lot more people I think moving
- 47:49Speaker 6: in there. But I do appreciate the numbers from President
- 47:52Speaker 6: Cunningham and mister Hudson and folks with the Putnam County
- 47:55Speaker 6: BOE and also to the Texture for bringing it up.
- 47:58Speaker 4: I definitely appreciate it.

- 48:11Speaker 6: Donald Trump has been shot out in more times than
- 48:14Speaker 6: Tim Walls, the vice president nominee has. Before he cut
- 48:18Speaker 6: and run for the National Guard he was about to
- 48:19Speaker 6: be deployed. He should be called Tim A.
- 48:22Speaker 4: Walls, says says a Texter.
- 48:26Speaker 6: This is something that as we close the show this morning,
- 48:29Speaker 6: something I've talked about in the past and it's back
- 48:33Speaker 6: in the news again, and that is the banning of
- 48:36Speaker 6: cell phones, or at least limiting their usage in public
- 48:40Speaker 6: schools Chesapeake, Ohio. Got a good radio buddy of mine
- 48:44Speaker 6: who lives in that area not far from here, of course,
- 48:48Speaker 6: and in that particular area Chesapeake, Ohio, they are limiting
- 48:53Speaker 6: the use of cell phones in the public schools. Marsha
- 48:58Speaker 6: Kavallik has a story posted this morning wv Metro News
- 49:01Speaker 6: dot com that now Berkeley County schools are rolling out
- 49:06Speaker 6: a plan that would greatly limit cell phone usage. Now,
- 49:10Speaker 6: under the plans there, this is Berkeley County. We're talking
- 49:12Speaker 6: about the use of smartphones and cell phones of all types.
- 49:16Speaker 6: Smart watches, earbuds, AirPods, and Bluetooth headphones will be prohibited
- 49:22Speaker 6: during class time, not overall, just during class time now
- 49:27Speaker 6: for kids in grades six through twelve, students can bring
- 49:30Speaker 6: the devices to school, but they have to be placed
- 49:33Speaker 6: on silent or turned off during actual instructional time. They
- 49:38Speaker 6: would be allowed to use them in the mornings before
- 49:41Speaker 6: classes start, during lunch, and after school. The fact that
- 49:47Speaker 6: we even have to have this discussion baffles my mind.
- 49:49Speaker 6: But again, old guy and old guy without kids here,
- 49:51Speaker 6: So no, do I have it?
- 49:53Speaker 4: Do I have the right to say anything?
- 49:55Speaker 6: For kids in pre k to fifth grade of phones
- 50:00Speaker 6: pretty much can't be visible. Now I'm not sure why
- 50:04Speaker 6: fifth grader needs a phone to begin with. But again,
- 50:06Speaker 6: old guy, no kids.
- 50:08Speaker 15: So uh.
- 50:09Speaker 6: But this is in Berkeley County. Some school systems in
- 50:13Speaker 6: other areas have put in place systems where kids turn
- 50:17Speaker 6: in their phones when classes start. They have locked bags
- 50:21Speaker 6: and they hand over the phones as soon as the
- 50:23Speaker 6: class begins, like if they still do a tardy bell,
- 50:26Speaker 6: I don't know they they had, and they hand the
- 50:28Speaker 6: phones over to the to the to the teacher. They're
- 50:30Speaker 6: put in a locked bag. To Texas, why would a
- 50:36Speaker 6: PreK student have a phone? Good point? Why would any
- 50:39Speaker 6: caid have a phone.
- 50:40Speaker 4: But that's that's just me. But they put the bag,
- 50:42Speaker 4: the phones in the lock bags.
- 50:43Speaker 6: And so I'm gonna get into this a little bit
- 50:45Speaker 6: later because I want to get your side of what
- 50:47Speaker 6: you think of all this. But Dave Allan showing five
