Three the strange face. We left the cabin and found a man at the
• 0:06
campion, obstructing our way. He was standing on the ladder with his back
• 0:10
to us, peering over the combing of the hatchway. He was, I
• 0:15
could see, and a shapen man, short, broad and clumsy, with
• 0:19
a crooked back, a hairy neck, and a head sunk between his shoulders.
• 0:25
He was dressed in dark blue serge and had peculiarly thick, coarse black
• 0:30
hair. I heard the unseen dogs growl furiously and forthwith. He ducked back,
• 0:36
coming into contact with the hand I put out to find him off from
• 0:40
myself. He turned with animal swiftness in some indefinable way. The black face
• 0:47
thus flashed upon me shocked me profoundly. It was a singularly deformed one.
• 0:53
The facial part projected forming something dimly suggestive of a muzzle, and the huge,
• 0:59
half open mouth showed as big white teeth as I had ever seen in
• 1:02
a human mouth. His eyes were blood shot at the edges, with scarcely
• 1:07
a rim of white round the hazel pupils. There was a curious glow of
• 1:11
excitement in his face. Confound you, said Montgomery, Why the devil.
• 1:19
Don't you get out of the way. The black faced man started aside without
• 1:23
a word. I went on up the companion, staring at him instinctively as
• 1:29
I did so, Montgomery stayed at the foot for a moment. You have
• 1:34
no bitterness here, you know, he said, in a deliberate tone.
• 1:38
Your place is forward. The black faced man cowered, nay, won't have
• 1:47
me forward. He spoke slowly, with a queer, hoarse quality in his
• 1:53
voice. Won't have you forward, said Montgomery in a menacing tone. But
• 2:00
I tell you to go. He was on the brink of saying something further,
• 2:06
then looked up at me suddenly, and followed me up the ladder.
• 2:10
I paused half way through the hatchway, looking back, still astonished beyond measure
• 2:15
at the grotesque ugliness of this black faced creature. I had never beheld such
• 2:21
a repulse of an extraordinary face before, And yet, if the contradiction is
• 2:27
credible, I experienced the same time an odd feeling that in some way I
• 2:31
had already encountered exactly the features and gestures that now amazed me. Afterwards,
• 2:39
it occurred to me that probably I had seen him as I was lifted aboard
• 2:44
and yet that scarcely satisfied my suspicion of a previous acquaintance. Yet, how
• 2:50
one could have set eyes on so singular a face and yet have forgotten the
• 2:53
precise occasion passed my imagination. Montgomery's movement to follow me released my attention,
• 3:01
and I turned and looked about me at the flushed deck of the little schooner.
• 3:06
I was already half prepared by the sounds I had heard for what I
• 3:09
saw, certainly, I never beheld a deck so dirty. It was littered
• 3:15
with scraps of carrot, shreds of green stuff, and indescribable filth. Fastened
• 3:22
by chains to the mainmast were a number of grisly staghounds, who now began
• 3:27
leaping and barking at me. And by the mizzen, a huge puma was
• 3:30
cramped in a little iron cage, far too small even to give a turning
• 3:36
room. Farther under the starboard bulwark were some big hutches containing a number of
• 3:42
rabbits, and a solitary lama was squeezed in a mere box of a cage.
• 3:46
Forward, the dogs were muzzled by leather straps. The only human being
• 3:53
on deck was a gaunt and silent sailor at the wheel. The patched and
• 3:59
dirty bankers were tense before the wind, and up aloft the little ship seemed
• 4:02
carrying every sail she had. The sky was clear, the sun midway down
• 4:09
the western sky. Long waves capped by the breeze with froth were running with
• 4:15
us. We went past the steersman to the taffrail, and saw the water
• 4:19
come foaming under the stern, and the bubbles go dancing and vanishing in her
• 4:24
wake. I turned and surveyed the unsavory length of the ship. Is this
• 4:30
an ocean menagerie? Said? I look like it? Said Montgomery. What
• 4:38
are these beasts for merchandise? Curios? Does the captain think he is going
• 4:44
to sell them somewhere in the south seas? It looked like it, dothn't
• 4:47
it, said Montgomery, and turned towards the wake again. Suddenly we heard
• 4:55
a yelp and a volley of furious blasphemy from the companion hatchway, and the
• 5:00
deformed man with the black face came up hurriedly. He was immediately followed by
• 5:05
a heavy, red haired man in a white cap. At the sight of
• 5:09
the former, the staghounds, who had all tired of barking at me.
• 5:13
By this time became furiously excited, howling and leaping against their chains. The
• 5:18
black hesitated before them, and this gave the red haired man time to come
• 5:24
up with him and deliver a tremendous blow between the shoulder blades. The poor
• 5:30
devil went down like a felled ox, and rolled in the dirt among the
• 5:32
furiously excited dogs. It was lucky for him that they were muzzled. The
• 5:39
red haired man gave a yop of exultation and stood staggering and as it seemed
• 5:45
to me, in serious danger of either going backwards down the companion hatchway or
• 5:49
forwards upon his victim. So soon as the second man had appeared, Montgomery
• 5:56
had started forward sturdy. On there ah, he cried in a tone of
• 6:01
remonstrance. A couple of sailors appeared on the forecastle. The black faced man,
• 6:08
howling in a singular voice, rolled about under the feet of the dogs.
• 6:12
No one attempted to help him. The brutes did their best to worry
• 6:16
him, butting their muzzles at him. There was a quick dance of their
• 6:20
lithe gray figured bodies over the clumsy, prostrate figure. The sailors forward,
• 6:26
shouted as though it was admirable sport. Montgomery gave an angry exclamation and went
• 6:32
striding down the deck, and I followed him. The black faced man scrambled
• 6:36
up and staggered forward, going and leaning over the bulwark by the main shrouds,
• 6:42
where he remained panting and glaring over his shoulders at the dogs. The
• 6:47
red haired man laughed a satisfied laugh. Look here, Captain, said Montgomery,
• 6:55
with his lisp a little accentuated, gripping the elbows of the red haired
• 7:00
man. This won't do. I stood behind Montgomery. The captain came half
• 7:06
round and regarded him with the dull and solemn eyes of a drunken man.
• 7:13
Wah won't do, he said, and added, after looking sleepily into Montgomery's
• 7:18
face for a minute, last ditch sore bones. With a sudden movement,
• 7:25
he shook his arms free, and, after two ineffectual attempts, stuck his
• 7:30
freckled fists into his side pockets. That man's, the passenger, said Montgomery.
• 7:38
I'd advise you to keep your hands off him. Go do well,
• 7:43
said the captain loudly. He suddenly turned and staggered towards the side. Do
• 7:49
what I like on my own ship, he said. I think Montgomery might
• 7:56
have left him then, seeing the brute was drunk, But he only turned
• 8:00
a shade paler and followed the captain to the bulwarks. Look you here,
• 8:05
captain, he said, that man of mine is not to be ill treated.
• 8:11
He hath been heaved ever thinth he came aboard for a minute. Alcoholic
• 8:18
fumes kept the captain speechless. Blasted sow bones was all he considered necessary.
• 8:26
I could see that Montgomery had one of those slow, pertinacious tempers that were
• 8:31
warm day after day to a white heat, and never again cool to forgiveness.
• 8:37
And I saw too that this quarrel had been some time growing. The
• 8:43
man's drunk, said I perhaps officiously, it'll do no good. Montgomery gave
• 8:50
an ugly twist to his drooping lip. He's always drunk. Do you think
• 8:58
that? Excuseeth a thoughting? Pasengers, my ship began the captain, waving
• 9:05
his hand unsteadily towards the cages. Was a clean ship. Look at it
• 9:11
now? It was certainly anything but clean, crew, continued the captain,
• 9:20
Clean, respectable crew. You agreed to take the beasts. I wish I'd
• 9:28
never set eyes on your infernal island. What the devil want beasts for on
• 9:35
an island like that? Then that man of yours understood. He was a
• 9:41
man. He's a lunatic, and he hadn't no business aft. Do you
• 9:46
think the whole damn ship belongs to you? Your Tailith began to Haye,
• 9:50
the poor devil Athunith he came aboard. That's just what he is. He's
• 9:58
a devil, an ugly devil. My men can't stand him. I can't
• 10:03
stand him. None of us can stand him, nor you either. Montgomery
• 10:11
turned away. You leave that man alone, anyhow, he said, nodding
• 10:18
his head as he spoke. But the captain meant to quarrel now, he
• 10:24
raised his voice. If he comes this end of the ship again, I'll
• 10:28
cut his insides out. I tell you, cut out his blasted insides.
• 10:33
Who are you to tell me what I'm to do? I tell you,
• 10:37
I'm the captain of this ship, captain and owner. I'm the law here.
• 10:43
I tell you the law and the prophets. I bargain to take a
• 10:48
man and his attendants to and from Erika and bring back some animals. I
• 10:54
never bargain to carry a mad devil and a silly saw bones bab well,
• 11:00
never mind what he called Montgomery. I saw the latter take a step forward
• 11:05
and interposed, He's drunk, said I. The captain began some abuse,
• 11:11
even fouler than the last. Shut up, I said, turning on him
• 11:16
sharply, for I had seen danger in Montgomery's white face. With that,
• 11:22
I brought the downpour on myself. However, I was glad to avert what
• 11:28
was uncommonly near a scuffle, even at the price of the captain's drunken ill
• 11:33
will. I do not think I have ever heard quite so much vile language
• 11:39
come in a continuous stream from any man's lips before. Though I have frequented
• 11:43
eccentric company enough, I found some of it hard to endure, though I
• 11:50
am a mild tempered man. But certainly, when I told the captain to
• 11:54
shut up, I had forgotten that I was merely a bit of human flots
• 12:01
cut off from my resources, and with by fare, unpaid, a mere
• 12:05
casual dependent on the bounty or speculative enterprise of the ship. He reminded me
• 12:13
of it with considerable vigor, But at any rate, I prevented a fight
