- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hello, Christians.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: This is Dallas Beecham, and I have good news.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Some questions change our lives.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: On the day of Pentecost, Peter preached that Jesus had been crucified, raised from the dead, and made both Lord and Christ.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: The people could not dismiss the message.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: They did not ask what should we debate.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: They asked what shall we do?
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: True faith does not merely admire the message, it responds to the message.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Peter's answer was direct.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Then Peter said unto them, Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Repent, be baptized, receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Repentance is more than regret.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: It is the turning of the heart toward God.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: It is agreeing with God about sin and surrendering our own way.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Baptism is not presented as an empty ritual.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: Those who received Peter's words were baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, identifying with the one who died and rose again.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: And the Holy Ghost was called a gift.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: A gift cannot be earned.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: It is received.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: But perhaps someone in the crowd wondered, is this only for the apostles?
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Is this only for those gathered in Jerusalem?
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Peter answered that question too, for the promise is unto you and to your children, and to all that are far off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: The promise reached beyond that generation.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: It was for their children.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: It was for those afar off.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: It was for as many as the Lord would call.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: That reaches across the centuries to us.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Yet for many years many sincere people have been told that the events of Acts chapter 2 were only for the early church, that the experience of Pentecost is not for us today.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: But Peter did not close the promise at Pentecost.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: He opened it to every generation God would call.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: If the Lord our God is still calling people, then his promise still stands.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: We must not allow years of tradition to silence the plain words of Scripture.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: We must return to the crowd's question, men and brethren, what shall we do?
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: And we must be willing to receive Peter's answer, not to revise his answer, not a shortened answer, and not an answer shaped by what we have already heard.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: The most important message a disciple can carry into a community is not this promise belong to another time.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: It is a message Peter carried on the first day of the church.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: The promise is for you.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: Peter continued to testify and exhort the people, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: Then came the response.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: Then they that gladly received his word were baptized.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: And the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Notice the order.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: They heard the word, received the word, obeyed the word, and were added to the church, to the believers that were there.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: The gospel is good news, but good news must be received.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: A pardon may be offered, but it must be accepted.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: A door may be opened, but it must be entered.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: A promise may be given, but we must believe the one who made it.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: The people on Pentecost did not postpone their response until a more convenient day.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: They did not ask the apostles to soften the message.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: When truth pricked their hearts, they obeyed.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: We live in a world filled with voices.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: Traditions speak.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Opinions speak.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Fear speaks.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: Pride speaks, but above all those voices stands the word of God.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: If your heart is stirred today, do not turn away.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Open the scriptures.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Ask God for the understanding.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Let faith lead to obedience.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: The promise that began with the prophets became an invitation in Acts chapter 2.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Tomorrow we will see that the promise did not remain in Jerusalem.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: It crossed boundaries, entered new homes, and reached people others might have left outside.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: I hope today's message has touched your heart and causes you to have a good day.
