Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Tom Rutherford: Bay of Plenty MP on fresh slips at Mount Maunganui landslide site
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: To Mount Longanui right now and the Manga there mile
- 0:04Speaker 1: more landslides reactivated over the course of the weekend. What
- 0:09Speaker 1: we can see is very wet, it's liquefied and obviously
- 0:13Speaker 1: it's not finish. That's taken down, some debris, some trees.
- 0:16Speaker 1: There's some boulders up there that are in quite precarious positions. Yeah,
- 0:20Speaker 1: the alert level has been raised, a key road has
- 0:23Speaker 1: been closed, and questions are now being asked about when
- 0:26Speaker 1: or in fact actually if the mount will ever fully
- 0:29Speaker 1: reopen to the public. We're joined now by the Bay
- 0:31Speaker 1: of Plenty MP Tom Rutherfan Hill, Tom, Good morning, Andrew
- 0:35Speaker 1: Gussing for everybody.
- 0:36Speaker 2: That was a shock, Yeah, really really really sad for
- 0:40Speaker 2: our local community here in Mountmnganuly and the wider Bay
- 0:44Speaker 2: of Plenty. Mount Monganuy is a massive stalwart in part
- 0:48Speaker 2: of our community, and seeing the reactivation of the main
- 0:52Speaker 2: landslide that sadly killed six people on the twenty second
- 0:56Speaker 2: of January is really gussing for us. But I'm pleased
- 1:01Speaker 2: with the response the council gave over the weekend. Are
- 1:04Speaker 2: going to be doing some assessments and inspections and we're
- 1:08Speaker 2: going to continue to press on to reopen the mount
- 1:10Speaker 2: safely in the future.
- 1:12Speaker 1: This is a big slip. It wasn't wildly wet, but
- 1:14Speaker 1: it was still a big slip, at least as big
- 1:16Speaker 1: as the initial slip. So does this prove that the
- 1:18Speaker 1: mountain will possibly never be safe to reopen.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Yes, the regression extends approximately twenty meters and they had
- 1:27Speaker 2: a runout of approximately one hundred meters. It doesn't quite
- 1:31Speaker 2: go as far as the original runout. But as you
- 1:34Speaker 2: played in your story before, the material is mobile land fluid.
- 1:39Speaker 2: There is always a risk that Mountmonganui may not have
- 1:43Speaker 2: the same stability that potentially it had previously prior to
- 1:46Speaker 2: the landslides on the twenty second of January. But I
- 1:50Speaker 2: trust the experts that are doing the phenomenal work on
- 1:53Speaker 2: there at the moment, who've been working on the summit
- 1:55Speaker 2: track and working on other parts of Mountmongeru as well,
- 1:59Speaker 2: forget it safely re opened in the future.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Yeah, so this happened again at the holiday park. The
- 2:03Speaker 1: good news, if there is any good news, is that
- 2:05Speaker 1: the rest of the path that goes all the way
- 2:07Speaker 1: around the mountain stayed pretty stable. Is this possible to
- 2:12Speaker 1: have that open? But the holiday park possibly is a
- 2:14Speaker 1: rite off.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a number of hypotheticals that play. The council
- 2:19Speaker 2: of working through those at the moment. But the track
- 2:22Speaker 2: that they have managed to restore that goes to the
- 2:25Speaker 2: summit ipat that wasn't impacted by these events. You're right,
- 2:30Speaker 2: it is very targeted to that one slip area that
- 2:34Speaker 2: was the one main landslide area that was part of
- 2:37Speaker 2: the holiday campground. So yeah, there are options for what
- 2:42Speaker 2: the future may look like and I'm sure the Council
- 2:44Speaker 2: will be considering those.
- 2:45Speaker 1: And the big impact on business, of course, is actually
- 2:48Speaker 1: in the mount itself, where we've got that little entertainment
- 2:50Speaker 1: and hospital area where there are so many cafes and
- 2:53Speaker 1: so many businesses and so many people employed there, and
- 2:55Speaker 1: they are really hurting. What's their prospects.
- 3:00Speaker 2: It's been a really challenging six months for the local
- 3:02Speaker 2: businesses at the base of Mount Monganuy and the surrounding areas.
- 3:06Speaker 2: If I could send a clear message to anybody listening today,
- 3:09Speaker 2: I want to tell them Mount Monganuy it South the
- 3:11Speaker 2: mountain may be closed, but the Mount Monganuy area and
- 3:14Speaker 2: main street and shops are well and truly opened, and
- 3:17Speaker 2: we would love people to come down to our community,
- 3:20Speaker 2: support our local economy. These businesses are doing it really tough.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Any support people can give to our local cafes, restaurants
- 3:27Speaker 2: or local businesses in the area, We really do appreciate
- 3:30Speaker 2: any support for them. They founding it really challenging. Winter
- 3:34Speaker 2: is generally a quiet season for them anyway, let alone
- 3:38Speaker 2: with the mountain being closed. So we are really working
- 3:41Speaker 2: together as a community to try and get through this
- 3:44Speaker 2: and to try and see the other side.
- 3:46Speaker 1: All right, Tom, thank you so much for your time.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Pass on our regards to those business owners who are
- 3:50Speaker 1: suffering that as Tom Rutherford, who is the Bay of
- 3:52Speaker 1: plenty MP for more.
