Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: I have actually help your level practice.
- 0:21Speaker 2: What's going on. I'm Rory from Saint Sinner, and I'm
- 0:24Speaker 2: talking about our new EP, Identity Crisis, that came out
- 0:27Speaker 2: in I think last month at some stage, and yeah,
- 0:31Speaker 2: super keen to be talking about it.
- 0:33Speaker 3: You Ferrari, thanks for joining us again. Brow always a
- 0:35Speaker 3: pleasure chatting pleasure. Thank you for having me, thank you
- 0:38Speaker 3: my pleasure process.
- 0:40Speaker 4: You mentioned, say, SI released your latest EP, Identity Crisis,
- 0:44Speaker 4: back in July.
- 0:45Speaker 3: So how's the reception been for it?
- 0:47Speaker 2: What's it's done? A lot better than I thought it would.
- 0:50Speaker 2: We've had because you know, whenever you release music, and
- 0:53Speaker 2: especially when you're such in such a competitive market, you're
- 0:57Speaker 2: always like, no one's going to listen to it. And
- 1:00Speaker 2: then within the first couple of weeks we've had people
- 1:02Speaker 2: that had sort of heard the singles and recognize that
- 1:04Speaker 2: we've been building up to something a little bit bigger,
- 1:07Speaker 2: responding going, oh my god, like all of this makes sense,
- 1:10Speaker 2: like the colors you were using in the art that
- 1:12Speaker 2: you were putting out, and like it all kind of
- 1:14Speaker 2: makes sense now, which is sick, Like that's that's really
- 1:17Speaker 2: cool to even get like two people being like I've
- 1:19Speaker 2: been following that and it makes sense now has been
- 1:23Speaker 2: really good. But funnily enough, how biggest response has actually
- 1:28Speaker 2: been from Japan with like a bunch of people just
- 1:34Speaker 2: obviously because we use a like a like an online
- 1:38Speaker 2: pr agency called Noise Riot, which is shorn from the
- 1:42Speaker 2: band Heists and he like advertises our stuff through TikTok,
- 1:46Speaker 2: through Instagram ads that kind of stuff, And the biggest
- 1:50Speaker 2: response we've gotten has been from from people in Japan.
- 1:54Speaker 2: They've been just like sharing it to their stories and
- 1:56Speaker 2: being like this is this is sick, which is awesome,
- 1:58Speaker 2: Like that's kind of strangely sick, Like I didn't expect that.
- 2:04Speaker 2: But yeah, early response has been has been really good.
- 2:06Speaker 2: We've had I think it did what it needed to do,
- 2:09Speaker 2: Like it's sort of just this one is just sort
- 2:11Speaker 2: of a knock on the door for us and sort
- 2:14Speaker 2: of introducing a few more of the ideas in our
- 2:17Speaker 2: story and stuff pretty early on. So yeah, pretty happy
- 2:22Speaker 2: with it, very happy with it.
- 2:23Speaker 3: So to tell us a bit more about the EP
- 2:25Speaker 3: from a musical point of view, brow and on your
- 2:26Speaker 3: going for with it.
- 2:28Speaker 2: So we have always been like we started the band
- 2:31Speaker 2: like Saint sid It's first iteration was twenty twenty, and
- 2:34Speaker 2: it was like a five piece rock and roll band
- 2:36Speaker 2: that was like, I use the word dated, but it
- 2:43Speaker 2: we just I didn't one hundred percent know who I
- 2:46Speaker 2: wanted to be as a musician, as an artist, and
- 2:51Speaker 2: I think what the identity crisis is for me was
- 2:55Speaker 2: this sort of rebranding and rebirth of what Saint Sinner
- 2:58Speaker 2: is and embracing that idea of like, well, I don't
- 3:01Speaker 2: just have to be one thing, Like we don't just
- 3:03Speaker 2: have to be like a metalcore band, we don't just
- 3:05Speaker 2: have to be a rock band. I don't think we
- 3:08Speaker 2: ever wanted to be a rock and roll band really,
- 3:10Speaker 2: but we went down that path. But yeah, this is
- 3:14Speaker 2: the whole idea of duality and accepting duality and accepting
- 3:19Speaker 2: like the different aspects that inspire you has been what
- 3:23Speaker 2: this band has always been about. Like that's been sort
- 3:25Speaker 2: of the one one thing. So musically, we just wanted
- 3:29Speaker 2: to sort of see how many different things that we
- 3:34Speaker 2: could do on one record before it started to fall apart.
- 3:37Speaker 2: And I really think we set out to achieve something
- 3:41Speaker 2: very different and I think we did. I think we
- 3:43Speaker 2: achieved some some different things all on the one record.
- 3:48Speaker 3: YEA for those who we haven't heard the EP or
- 3:51Speaker 3: I haven't heard of it.
- 3:52Speaker 4: We're going to ram it down their throat right now, bro,
- 3:54Speaker 4: because EPs are great because there's only a limited amount
- 3:57Speaker 4: of tracks, and them saying got songs on Identity Crisis, mate,
- 3:59Speaker 4: So we'll run through them all individually and more about them, because,
- 4:03Speaker 4: like you say, there is a bit of a spread.
- 4:05Speaker 3: I guess from John's comedy there is, so.
- 4:10Speaker 2: It does.
- 4:11Speaker 3: But with the birth track Identity Crisis, the intro track.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Yeah, So that we have this, I guess it's it's
- 4:19Speaker 2: probably pertinent to sort of preface this whole conversation where
- 4:22Speaker 2: like one of the big decisions that we decided to
- 4:25Speaker 2: take early on was to tell a story with all
- 4:27Speaker 2: of our releases going forward, like a story that lives
- 4:30Speaker 2: beneath the surface of what is like presented that's just
- 4:35Speaker 2: the music. And because you know, we looked at all
- 4:37Speaker 2: the big bands and the ones that we're doing really well,
- 4:39Speaker 2: like Bring Me the Horizon and Sleep Tokens that not
- 4:42Speaker 2: bad Omens or all all of them Tony one Pilots,
- 4:45Speaker 2: and we went, well, they all tell a story outside
- 4:48Speaker 2: of the sonics of whatever their music is. And so
- 4:52Speaker 2: the Identity Crisis for us was an opportunity to go, Okay,
- 4:56Speaker 2: how can we tell our created narrative without ramming it
- 4:59Speaker 2: to people's throats. So the people that want to go
- 5:01Speaker 2: a bit deeper and get a bit more into it,
- 5:04Speaker 2: which is a lot of people now, funnily enough, can
- 5:07Speaker 2: do that. And I've always been that way, Like, if
- 5:10Speaker 2: a band releases any kind of law, I'm all in,
- 5:13Speaker 2: Like I am in, I am sold. I don't even
- 5:16Speaker 2: care if the story is tragic, like I will, I
- 5:18Speaker 2: don't care. I'll sell my soul for a little bit
- 5:20Speaker 2: of extra themes. So Identity Crisis, the first track was
- 5:27Speaker 2: in between every song. When we released the singles, we
- 5:29Speaker 2: did this little like hype video thing which is supposed
- 5:32Speaker 2: to tell parts of the story, and that sets up
- 5:34Speaker 2: this universe of myself as a character being kind of
- 5:41Speaker 2: trapped in this weird limbo state. It's sort of fractured
- 5:45Speaker 2: state of mind and dealing with a bunch of I
- 5:48Speaker 2: guess it parallels real life, like dealing with a bunch
- 5:51Speaker 2: of unresolved traumas and a bunch of sort of edgy,
- 5:55Speaker 2: dark emo things like that. And yeah, so that that opening.
- 6:01Speaker 2: We call it a stem because it's what we walk
- 6:02Speaker 2: out to on stage now. But that opening stem was
- 6:06Speaker 2: very much that. It's sort of just this eerie setting
- 6:10Speaker 2: the scene, trying to give people this sense of unease
- 6:13Speaker 2: pretty early on, because it's literally just me with a
- 6:17Speaker 2: little mic against smoke computer like the voice detuned and
- 6:20Speaker 2: some fucking creepy ass splice samples, and yeah, we just
- 6:25Speaker 2: wanted to do something that had set the tone a
- 6:27Speaker 2: little bit.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Then devil Boy don't tell us that one?
- 6:32Speaker 2: Yea right, Well, so devil Boy is it isn't? It isn't.
- 6:37Speaker 2: It's interesting. So that was that song's the oldest song
- 6:41Speaker 2: that on the record in terms of the demo, so
- 6:44Speaker 2: we I've had that since the band started in twenty twenty.
- 6:47Speaker 2: But it was this weird electronic dance music thing and
- 6:50Speaker 2: I was like, ah, now that we're getting heavier and
- 6:54Speaker 2: that's the direction we want to go, and let's make
- 6:55Speaker 2: it fucking like metal EDM dance breakdown track thing. And that,
- 7:04Speaker 2: story wise, is literally kind of personification of the main character.
- 7:09Speaker 2: The title doesn't really make sense. We just thought it
- 7:11Speaker 2: sounded sweet. We would just say, oh, it's a cool title.
- 7:13Speaker 2: It sounds cool. Doesn't really like not once in the
- 7:18Speaker 2: song as that say the words devil boy. It used to,
- 7:20Speaker 2: but we kind of cut that because it was this
- 7:22Speaker 2: weird voice thing. But yeah, for that one, we just
- 7:25Speaker 2: wanted to see how far we could push this like
- 7:29Speaker 2: metalcore thing into the realm of electronica and having just
- 7:33Speaker 2: a bunch of split up things in a way, that
- 7:36Speaker 2: track kind of like foreshadows different elements of the rest
- 7:41Speaker 2: of the EP. There's like the electronic section, there's the
- 7:43Speaker 2: fucking breakdown section, there's the slam section, there's the singing section.
- 7:47Speaker 2: There's like a little bit of like you know, like
- 7:50Speaker 2: the production value in there as well. And in the
- 7:54Speaker 2: story that's kind of it's telling the narrative or I guess,
- 7:58Speaker 2: kind of setting up the narrati of where I am,
- 8:02Speaker 2: where I actually come into it post I guess in
- 8:06Speaker 2: that being in that place of limbo and what's going
- 8:10Speaker 2: on outside of my head a little bit, because funnily enough,
- 8:15Speaker 2: we didn't think this through. Whenever you do law that
- 8:18Speaker 2: is in any way story driven involved with a fucking
- 8:20Speaker 2: music release, it makes everything fifty times harder because you
- 8:24Speaker 2: have to then go you have to go, oh shit,
- 8:26Speaker 2: does this make sense? Have we fucked ourselves with continuity?
- 8:29Speaker 2: And then we have so yeah, if you listen to
- 8:35Speaker 2: it in order, it doesn't make sense until you listen
- 8:39Speaker 2: to the whole record, I guess, which is another reason
- 8:43Speaker 2: to make people do it. But yeah, so that's devil Boy.
- 8:45Speaker 2: It's kind of this. It's more character focused law wise,
- 8:49Speaker 2: and then very much foreshadowing sonically what the rest of
- 8:51Speaker 2: the record is going to do.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Already, bro it sounds like a therapy session to be
- 8:55Speaker 3: a lot easier.
- 8:57Speaker 2: It will be easier, it's just more expensive at the moment.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Like we could be out thirty thousand dollars or I
- 9:03Speaker 2: could be out like a lifetime of debt. I just
- 9:05Speaker 2: chose the lesser of two evils.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Very cool. We'll move on to head Case.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Yeah, so that first single obviously we like that song
- 9:15Speaker 2: was done in September, I think of last year, So
- 9:17Speaker 2: it's been out. This whole record's been out for a year.
- 9:21Speaker 2: I finished for a year. Sorry, and like I've touched
- 9:23Speaker 2: on that a bit later because of the new stuff.
- 9:26Speaker 2: But the yeah, because this record's been done for so long,
- 9:31Speaker 2: it feels weird to be like, oh shit, that was
- 9:34Speaker 2: like over a year ago. And I guess Headcase is
- 9:39Speaker 2: within the story not to ram it down people's throats
- 9:43Speaker 2: or of tell it to them straight. But essentially, I've
- 9:46Speaker 2: been abducted by a company that takes your trauma and
- 9:51Speaker 2: turns it into narcotics and sells it as like beauty products,
- 9:55Speaker 2: you know what I mean. It's a little bit like
- 9:57Speaker 2: Apple being like, here's a thing, here's some stuff. This
- 10:01Speaker 2: will make you happy. This little thing right here? Do
- 10:04Speaker 2: you give us money? Life is sorted? And so it's
- 10:07Speaker 2: kind of a comment on that and how I think
- 10:10Speaker 2: a lot of social media and stuff is like a dopamine,
- 10:14Speaker 2: like a dopamine thief, and how it uses people's fucking
- 10:20Speaker 2: brains to like make money, and which is super deep,
- 10:26Speaker 2: I know. But the head Case is kind of the
- 10:27Speaker 2: first inverted Commas test in the story, and it's about
- 10:32Speaker 2: this sense of like self hatred and rage and being
- 10:37Speaker 2: angry at yourself for being whatever and the labels that
- 10:40Speaker 2: we have for ourselves. And that kind of went down
- 10:42Speaker 2: this rocky metal core rock route, which kind of set
- 10:50Speaker 2: the tone because it was the first song we finished
- 10:52Speaker 2: with Daniel Antics in Kernel. Shout out to Daniel, amazing producer,
- 10:56Speaker 2: such a good boy. That kind of went like obviously
- 11:03Speaker 2: where devil Boy was foreshadowing what was going on in
- 11:05Speaker 2: the record. This was very much like, Okay, this is
- 11:07Speaker 2: like the rockier one with a breakdown in it, but
- 11:11Speaker 2: you can kind of like, you know, get into it.
- 11:14Speaker 2: As opposed to most metal where it's like I'm going
- 11:16Speaker 2: to punch people, this one's more like I'm going to
- 11:19Speaker 2: like bang my heads a little bit, I guess. And
- 11:22Speaker 2: it was a great opportunity for me to as a
- 11:25Speaker 2: like a designer outside of this, which is my other job.
- 11:29Speaker 2: It was a great opportunity for me to come up
- 11:31Speaker 2: with some cool ideas to support the law around costuming
- 11:34Speaker 2: and that kind of stuff. Like. So we had the
- 11:35Speaker 2: balaclava's to sort of signify that we were a bit
- 11:39Speaker 2: like outside of ourselves as these characters, or that we
- 11:41Speaker 2: were like set in a different mental setting because like
- 11:45Speaker 2: the mask covers up that identity. So yeah, it was
- 11:49Speaker 2: that was kind of like the one that we went
- 11:51Speaker 2: big on, the first single we kind of went on
- 11:53Speaker 2: it went all in on that one. That was fuck
- 11:56Speaker 2: like literally a year ago next week that came out,
- 11:59Speaker 2: which is mad to think about. Now, Yeah, that's take case.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Wait and then you got Villain Villain. So that's Daniel's
- 12:08Speaker 2: favorite song. I got really drunk one time, so I
- 12:16Speaker 2: got out of a really toxic relationship. This was a
- 12:19Speaker 2: few years ago now, and I got super drunk in
- 12:24Speaker 2: my house and wrote this weird demo and it like
- 12:27Speaker 2: a rap so it was like a rap song, and
- 12:29Speaker 2: I was like, I'm not I'm not eminem, I'm not
- 12:32Speaker 2: a rapper, but I got super fucking messed up and
- 12:36Speaker 2: wrote this song and then sent it to the chat
- 12:39Speaker 2: and the guy's like, this is actually kind of cool,
- 12:41Speaker 2: bit goofy, but it's kind of cool. And then I
- 12:43Speaker 2: showed it to Daniel alongside the head case and he
- 12:46Speaker 2: was like, this is the trap, bro, this is the
- 12:48Speaker 2: one which was odd, and we kind of took it
- 12:52Speaker 2: down this sort of alternative rock, like very dry like
- 12:57Speaker 2: room drums. I don't know if that makes sense, but
- 12:58Speaker 2: very like not super man drums were processed sounding drums
- 13:02Speaker 2: and kind of adding metal elements in the guitars and
- 13:05Speaker 2: in the bass and stuff to this like rap song,
- 13:10Speaker 2: and genre wise, we were just like fuck it. This
- 13:12Speaker 2: sticks out like a sore thumb on this record, but
- 13:14Speaker 2: it shows that we can be a bit diverse and
- 13:16Speaker 2: we can do some interesting shit, and yeah, lotherwise it's
- 13:21Speaker 2: like another test, but this one they're testing a drug
- 13:26Speaker 2: that makes you makes you grumpy. It's basically the resentment drugs.
- 13:33Speaker 2: So I guess the comment is I at the time
- 13:39Speaker 2: was feeling very spiteful, and I was like, well, what
- 13:42Speaker 2: if instead of using bite to you know, go and
- 13:46Speaker 2: do the positive thing. I feel like this company would
- 13:49Speaker 2: use it as a as like a negative, a negative thing.
- 13:52Speaker 2: I feel like these which is in line with what
- 13:55Speaker 2: I think a lot of big Farmer does is using
- 13:58Speaker 2: people's resentment to make more money. But yeah, it's the
- 14:04Speaker 2: Spike drug test. And the color was purple because I
- 14:08Speaker 2: thought that was pretty sick. And yeah, like very odd song, Dylan,
- 14:15Speaker 2: it's got this weird. He's gone as a rap song
- 14:18Speaker 2: with a breakdown at the end for no reason. We
- 14:21Speaker 2: were like, how can we fuck this up? Breakdown at
- 14:24Speaker 2: the end, and the drummer was like, no, don't do it,
- 14:27Speaker 2: and then he left the studio to go to the
- 14:29Speaker 2: bathroom and he came back and we put a breakdown
- 14:31Speaker 2: in it and he was like no, but yeah, we
- 14:34Speaker 2: did it that song with a breakdown, right.
- 14:38Speaker 3: With a breakdown.
- 14:39Speaker 4: And the next one is your first collaboration on the album,
- 14:41Speaker 4: and I can't really read my writing, but I'm hoping
- 14:44Speaker 4: it says dysphoria.
- 14:46Speaker 2: It does say dysphoria. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So the green one,
- 14:50Speaker 2: funnily enough, so second single, we had David from bell
- 14:53Speaker 2: Haven on that one, who's an absolute legend. He's an
- 14:56Speaker 2: amazing person, amazing, super talented musician, very goo thing guy,
- 15:01Speaker 2: and we'd seen Belhaven a few times and I was
- 15:06Speaker 2: just blown away by his talent and I was like,
- 15:09Speaker 2: surely he'd never get on a song with us because
- 15:11Speaker 2: being from camera, there's not a lot of opportunities, so
- 15:13Speaker 2: you've got to kind of get out and we've I
- 15:16Speaker 2: think we've done that, but we I'd mess it. Hit
- 15:22Speaker 2: him up and I was like, do you want to
- 15:23Speaker 2: be on this song? And we only had the chorus
- 15:25Speaker 2: at that point, so I was like, do you want
- 15:27Speaker 2: to be on this song? He's literally five seconds of
- 15:29Speaker 2: it and he was like, yeah, dude, absolutely, they're fucking bangs.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Let's go. And then we had to write the rest
- 15:35Speaker 2: of the song because we're like, fuck now, we need
- 15:37Speaker 2: the rest of the song. And we wrote that in
- 15:41Speaker 2: like two or three hours in my garage in a
- 15:44Speaker 2: logic session. Sam My guitar is fucking gun on guitar
- 15:49Speaker 2: and just songwriting wise, like in terms of his ability
- 15:53Speaker 2: to create music, he's it incredible and so yeah, I
- 15:58Speaker 2: did the lyrics and we kind of just banged it out.
- 16:01Speaker 2: And funnily enough, the song it took, it's the shortest
- 16:03Speaker 2: amount of time to write is our biggest it's like
- 16:05Speaker 2: our biggest track. It's done nearly two hundred thousand streams
- 16:07Speaker 2: on its own, which is for us a big deal.
- 16:10Speaker 2: And it's like, yeah, it went, it went mad, like
- 16:15Speaker 2: Spotify algorithm went, you know what, I'll have some of
- 16:17Speaker 2: that like that one, right, that one. The rest of
- 16:20Speaker 2: your sha can fuck off that one. That one can
- 16:23Speaker 2: stay because it's green and Spotify is green or that
- 16:26Speaker 2: that's my theory anyway, because we used green in the title.
- 16:30Speaker 2: But yeah, so Dysphoria is about just that, like I
- 16:34Speaker 2: are kind of feeling really uncomfortable in your own skin
- 16:37Speaker 2: and feeling kind of like this inward sense of numbness
- 16:42Speaker 2: or dread or whatever. And the video we went to
- 16:45Speaker 2: this three D animated animator called Hollowed Graphics who's done
- 16:49Speaker 2: videos for all sorts of people. Awesome dude, irish fella,
- 16:52Speaker 2: and we yeah, hit him up and he was super keen.
- 16:56Speaker 2: He did this video that kind of shows another one
- 16:58Speaker 2: of the inverted Commas tests that gets done on the subject,
- 17:02Speaker 2: which extracts that feeling of like being uncomfortable in your
- 17:07Speaker 2: skin and leaves you as this empty vessel, which is
- 17:11Speaker 2: a comment. I guess Dysphoria was a comment on like,
- 17:14Speaker 2: you know, you feel super messed up and then you
- 17:17Speaker 2: go get help and sometimes it leaves you feeling worse
- 17:19Speaker 2: because you then have to go back to square one.
- 17:22Speaker 2: And yeah, it was again, that's probably the most straightforward
- 17:26Speaker 2: metal core track on the record because it's like singing verse,
- 17:32Speaker 2: singing chorus, last beat, breakdown, and feature from another similar artist.
- 17:37Speaker 2: So that's probably the most cut and clean, like simplistic
- 17:41Speaker 2: metal core song that we've got. But banging riff, like
- 17:43Speaker 2: I didn't write it. If I'd have written it like
- 17:45Speaker 2: that riff is terrible. But Sam wrote that riff and
- 17:48Speaker 2: I was like, bro, that's so good, and we kind
- 17:51Speaker 2: of had a bit of a moment where it was
- 17:53Speaker 2: like yeah, dude, so yeah, that's Dysphoria, the green one.
- 17:58Speaker 2: That's the biggest single so far, which has been awesome,
- 18:00Speaker 2: really cool.
- 18:01Speaker 3: Now, before we go further away, you've anually colors a
- 18:03Speaker 3: couple of times, you associated people with the villain, and
- 18:05Speaker 3: you've got green yetoria, So what's what's to go with it?
- 18:09Speaker 2: What's so I'm a by by Trey, Like I'm a
- 18:13Speaker 2: graphic designer, so a lot of what I do is
- 18:17Speaker 2: going like, Okay, what's going to make audiences? Because let's
- 18:21Speaker 2: be honest, most of the people consuming music now don't
- 18:24Speaker 2: actually like remember the names of songs me included. I
- 18:28Speaker 2: go like, what the fuck? Who did that? I sometimes
- 18:30Speaker 2: know the artist, but if like it all sounds the same,
- 18:34Speaker 2: I'm not going to know the song name and I'm
- 18:35Speaker 2: not going to be bothered to go look for it
- 18:37Speaker 2: because unless I'm you know, really motivated that day. But
- 18:41Speaker 2: so I was like, well, with the singles, what's a
- 18:43Speaker 2: way that we can make people from a marketing perspective,
- 18:46Speaker 2: go oh, I know that one? It was the blue one,
- 18:49Speaker 2: and then they'll like look through our discography, but there's blue.
- 18:52Speaker 2: I like that one. So I just associated all the
- 18:54Speaker 2: singles and all of the different tests or like chapters
- 18:57Speaker 2: within the identity crisis with the color because I just
- 19:01Speaker 2: maybe maybe it's a little thing in my brain where
- 19:04Speaker 2: I like to have everything organized in color, but you
- 19:07Speaker 2: should see the logic profile like projects, they are colored.
- 19:13Speaker 2: But yeah, I just I really like that imagery that
- 19:16Speaker 2: is combined with the story that you can sort of see,
- 19:19Speaker 2: all right. This part of the identity crisis was orange
- 19:21Speaker 2: for I think Lost it might be the next one
- 19:23Speaker 2: or something, and then green for Dysphoria, and then you
- 19:27Speaker 2: can really dive into the photo shoots and the aesthetic
- 19:30Speaker 2: you have behind each single. You can go down a
- 19:33Speaker 2: colored route and it gives you more of a vibe
- 19:35Speaker 2: that for that single. So I just purple was the
- 19:38Speaker 2: vibe the villain I was feeling purple. Green was definitely
- 19:42Speaker 2: the vibe for Dysphoria because it was like this acid
- 19:44Speaker 2: green thing. And then yeah, blue was head case, Black
- 19:50Speaker 2: was Heroin or like gray and black. Lost it was orange,
- 19:55Speaker 2: and devil Boy was like another shade of blue. I
- 19:59Speaker 2: think that's good. I can remember that kind of and
- 20:02Speaker 2: then Blood was red. But like, it just helped, Like
- 20:06Speaker 2: I love having a colorway for things, you know, I love.
- 20:08Speaker 2: I love because you can create merch with it. You
- 20:11Speaker 2: can create assets for social media with it. People go, oh,
- 20:13Speaker 2: it looks cohesive. It kind of looks like the rainbow
- 20:16Speaker 2: if you scroll down our Instagram, which is cool. So yeah,
- 20:20Speaker 2: we will always use colors and different to differentiate our ears,
- 20:23Speaker 2: which is which is pretty common thing for us.
- 20:26Speaker 3: Very cool.
- 20:26Speaker 4: All right, where we shall move on to the next
- 20:28Speaker 4: track on the EP, which is Lost It the orange.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Run, Yeah, the orange one, so our old stuff, the
- 20:35Speaker 2: everything pre September last year. The color for the band
- 20:39Speaker 2: was orange. This is my favorite color. And I had,
- 20:44Speaker 2: like I just lost It felt like the most similar
- 20:49Speaker 2: track to that. It was this weird like punky rock
- 20:54Speaker 2: thing and Lost it's kind of more of Ah, it's
- 21:00Speaker 2: very much like an homage to what we would used
- 21:02Speaker 2: to be doing, but with better production and a better
- 21:04Speaker 2: direction on it and a bit more more of a
- 21:07Speaker 2: mi Kem sort of throwback, which is cool. And yeah,
- 21:12Speaker 2: So that that one's about a drug that we called Frienzoline.
- 21:16Speaker 2: And what Frienzolin does is it basically it's like ecstasy
- 21:19Speaker 2: if ecstasy was on crack.
- 21:22Speaker 3: And so.
- 21:26Speaker 2: You know, I've got a history, my own history with
- 21:28Speaker 2: with with using some naughty things, and I kind of
- 21:31Speaker 2: wanted to write about that and how I would feel
- 21:35Speaker 2: in that sort of elevated state and then like reflecting
- 21:39Speaker 2: on it, afterwards and being like, I actually don't know
- 21:42Speaker 2: what's going where my brain is right now, and so
- 21:46Speaker 2: Lost It was about that, and I kind of just
- 21:48Speaker 2: did this animated lyric video because we couldn't afford another
- 21:51Speaker 2: music video by that point, really in debt. But yeah,
- 21:57Speaker 2: it's yeah, so we did. We did Lost It as
- 22:01Speaker 2: like this weird animated video to show what happens when
- 22:04Speaker 2: the company successfully gets a drug out into the world,
- 22:08Speaker 2: what happens, and it ends with like the video ends
- 22:12Speaker 2: with like three teenagers overdosing on it and dying, which
- 22:17Speaker 2: is not good. Don't do drugs stay in school, but.
- 22:21Speaker 3: Do drugs when you're staying in school.
- 22:26Speaker 2: That's what I did, the best of both world Let's go.
- 22:31Speaker 2: But yeah, So Frenzilyn was sort of the topic of
- 22:36Speaker 2: that song and kind of what it would look like
- 22:38Speaker 2: if one of those big pharmaceutical companies released a lifestyle
- 22:42Speaker 2: product that was for raving, and it was like, what
- 22:46Speaker 2: would actually happen if that was a thing. How would
- 22:49Speaker 2: people feel, how would you How would they take it?
- 22:51Speaker 2: Would it be like vaping would be like kind of
- 22:53Speaker 2: under the table, or would it be would it be like, Okay,
- 22:56Speaker 2: let's tax this and make money off that kind of
- 22:58Speaker 2: thing and yeah, just just like a more like a riot.
- 23:03Speaker 2: That song is very like the party song, I guess,
- 23:08Speaker 2: and yeah, a lot of fun to play live. We
- 23:09Speaker 2: probably don't play it as much as we as we should,
- 23:11Speaker 2: but it's a lot of fun to play live. Yeah,
- 23:14Speaker 2: kind of like a my Chemical Romance cross fall Out
- 23:17Speaker 2: Boy cross Bring Me the Horizon's Newest Stuff kind of
- 23:21Speaker 2: vibe with that one.
- 23:22Speaker 3: Right cool well, speaking of drugs, and next track is Heroin, which.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Features high Yeah. Yeah, so Chris Zagas from Heists is
- 23:29Speaker 2: on that way. He's a real g We love Chris
- 23:32Speaker 2: funny story with that song, though there are no funny
- 23:37Speaker 2: stories about Heroin except for this one. So I was like,
- 23:42Speaker 2: I've got my own history of of doing some naughty
- 23:45Speaker 2: stuff and that this song is probably like in terms
- 23:48Speaker 2: of the content, just like the heaviest I mean, it
- 23:51Speaker 2: is also the like the new metalcore, very heavy, very
- 23:55Speaker 2: like a ship were about to punch some people in
- 23:58Speaker 2: the face type of song. And initially we had this
- 24:03Speaker 2: song written and Jack Bergen from Void a Vision, who
- 24:06Speaker 2: I love like if he ever watches this, which he
- 24:08Speaker 2: probably won't, but if anybody who knows him better, I
- 24:12Speaker 2: love I love him. I want I want to like
- 24:15Speaker 2: be his friend. I idolize that man more than like
- 24:19Speaker 2: anybody ever. And he is from my favorite band, BOYD Division,
- 24:25Speaker 2: and we had He messaged us on Instagram being like, hey,
- 24:29Speaker 2: I think actually I sent him I did the classic
- 24:31Speaker 2: hey man and you want to hear my demo and
- 24:33Speaker 2: like sent him Headcase and he was like this is
- 24:35Speaker 2: really good, and I was like, what the fuck? This
- 24:37Speaker 2: is crazy? Ah freaked the fuck out, and then was like,
- 24:42Speaker 2: would you want to get on a song and he
- 24:44Speaker 2: was like yeah, let's throw some ideas together. Breaked out
- 24:48Speaker 2: even more, just died. And then we wrote Heroin for that,
- 24:51Speaker 2: like I had the idea for it and had the
- 24:55Speaker 2: lyrical content. And then he got really fam and also
- 25:00Speaker 2: had a massive health thing going on at the time,
- 25:03Speaker 2: and he kind of dropped off the face of the
- 25:05Speaker 2: planet for a minute, which is fair enough. He're dealing
- 25:07Speaker 2: with some awful, awful things and I'm very proud of
- 25:11Speaker 2: him for getting through that. But then we were like, okay,
- 25:14Speaker 2: so he can't do it, and he's also on tour
- 25:16Speaker 2: in America. He's like, yeah, too big for us. And
- 25:19Speaker 2: then we have a friend carl An Ocean Sleeper was
- 25:21Speaker 2: going to do it. Then he couldn't do it because
- 25:23Speaker 2: they got really famous. Then we had a guy from
- 25:26Speaker 2: a band called Dead Echo in the States, and he
- 25:28Speaker 2: couldn't do it because he had like a family crisis
- 25:30Speaker 2: when we tried to record it. And then so we
- 25:34Speaker 2: were like, this song is fucking cursed. It's cursed. And
- 25:38Speaker 2: then we met Sean. Actually, we met guy who's the
- 25:41Speaker 2: guitarist of Ice. He does all most of our photography
- 25:44Speaker 2: and he did the head case video and I was like,
- 25:47Speaker 2: we kind of got real close with them. I said
- 25:49Speaker 2: to Chris, hey, like, I love your music. You're like
- 25:52Speaker 2: your voice is sick. Do you want to jump on
- 25:55Speaker 2: this track? You'll probably die if you do, though, because
- 25:57Speaker 2: it's cursed. And he did it and he's still alive.
- 26:01Speaker 2: So we won. We won there, and yeah, those those
- 26:04Speaker 2: boys are awesome. And Heroin is basically the final test,
- 26:08Speaker 2: and it's extracting the addiction gene because there's a lot
- 26:13Speaker 2: of interesting research into how addiction and into how that
- 26:18Speaker 2: stuff is passed down. What's the word like hereditary and
- 26:24Speaker 2: how you get past this box of like genetic disorder
- 26:28Speaker 2: that you've got nothing you can't do anything about, and
- 26:30Speaker 2: if you push that, if you poke the bear, it
- 26:32Speaker 2: gets you know, proper bad. And yeah, so we I
- 26:36Speaker 2: was inspired by a lot of stuff, mainly Saw the
- 26:39Speaker 2: film Saw and just wrote like super gory, super like
- 26:45Speaker 2: super abrasive lyrics, which is not something I'm used to doing.
- 26:51Speaker 2: And then yeah, we did this this track. Sam and
- 26:53Speaker 2: Caleb the Drama again came in massive and made it
- 26:56Speaker 2: sick and damn made it sound awesome and Chris jumped
- 26:59Speaker 2: on and yeah, we shot the video ourselves, went to Bunnings,
- 27:03Speaker 2: brought like a thousand sheets of plastic and just I'm
- 27:07Speaker 2: about in some goo and sprawled about on the ground
- 27:11Speaker 2: like a dying fish. It was good. It's good.
- 27:18Speaker 3: He finishes up with Blood.
- 27:20Speaker 2: Yeah, bloods It's interesting because it was originally gonna HEROLD
- 27:25Speaker 2: was going to be last, but Blood is this completely
- 27:30Speaker 2: different heavy but completely different heavy. So we were like,
- 27:34Speaker 2: I want to do it the sad song, like the
- 27:37Speaker 2: song that you have a bit of a cry to
- 27:39Speaker 2: and whatever. And I'd had the lyrics for like five
- 27:44Speaker 2: or six years, but it had had always never known
- 27:47Speaker 2: where to put them, like on whatever song to put
- 27:50Speaker 2: them on. And then on the last record we released
- 27:55Speaker 2: before we kind of rebranded. There was a song called
- 27:57Speaker 2: Faking and that inspired me to do I was like, ah,
- 28:01Speaker 2: we kind of did it, but it didn't get made
- 28:03Speaker 2: the way that I kind of wanted it to, Like
- 28:06Speaker 2: I felt like I missed the mark with it, and
- 28:09Speaker 2: so Blood was like, Okay, I'm gonna get that one
- 28:12Speaker 2: back and make it this big moment tom ep and
- 28:17Speaker 2: so it was like an acoustic guitar, some sad lyrics
- 28:22Speaker 2: and like a massive chorus and yeah, that that kind
- 28:26Speaker 2: of it's it's the not to get super heavy on
- 28:31Speaker 2: y oldie interview, but like the it's it's pretty like
- 28:36Speaker 2: the content of it's pretty messed up, like it's a
- 28:38Speaker 2: pretty it's a very heavy song, very personal song, but
- 28:40Speaker 2: with the most vulnerable songwriting that I've done. And yeah,
- 28:45Speaker 2: within the space of the law, it's kind of this
- 28:48Speaker 2: this space just before you the subject dies, I guess,
- 28:57Speaker 2: in that weird like limbo space of like you know
- 29:01Speaker 2: they say when you like before you die, your life
- 29:04Speaker 2: flashes and you get like four minutes of brain activity
- 29:06Speaker 2: or wherever it is and you sort of see different
- 29:08Speaker 2: parts of your of your life. It's kind of that
- 29:11Speaker 2: feeling made into a song. And then it kind of
- 29:14Speaker 2: climaxes with this ending bit and a message, and so yeah,
- 29:20Speaker 2: that is within the realm of of like the subject
- 29:24Speaker 2: has been tested on to the point where they're in
- 29:26Speaker 2: this weird again. It started in this limbo state. They
- 29:29Speaker 2: went through all this like traumatic stuff, and then they're
- 29:31Speaker 2: back in that limbo state, and yeah, it kind of
- 29:35Speaker 2: finishes the EP on this very like lack like like
- 29:39Speaker 2: this this this weird moment. We don't necessarily feel good,
- 29:42Speaker 2: you feel terrible because that's depressing as the ship that
- 29:45Speaker 2: it's like, well that was nice, Now what you kind
- 29:48Speaker 2: of you know, have you ever seen a movie and
- 29:51Speaker 2: you leave the cinema and you just feel a bit weird.
- 29:54Speaker 2: You're just like, ah, yeah, I'm uncomfortable all the time.
- 29:59Speaker 2: I got that seeing the Hunger Games, the first one,
- 30:01Speaker 2: and I was like very small when I saw it.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Well wasn't, but I was mentally small and it just
- 30:08Speaker 2: made me feel weird, and so I was like, fuck it,
- 30:09Speaker 2: I want to do a song that makes you feel
- 30:11Speaker 2: weird when you finish the EP like walking out of
- 30:12Speaker 2: the cinema. And the video we did for it is
- 30:15Speaker 2: like this lyric video but it like rolls like credits
- 30:18Speaker 2: and it was just supposed to finalize the EP and
- 30:20Speaker 2: leave people feeling a bit like you know, at the
- 30:24Speaker 2: end of a record where there's breakdowns and shit. So yeah,
- 30:28Speaker 2: and obviously blood is red, because I was gonna.
- 30:32Speaker 3: Ask that question, but it seemed a little too obvious.
- 30:34Speaker 2: Yeah, you have to. Funnily enough, though, the video is
- 30:37Speaker 2: set in like a burning car, so it's like maybe
- 30:41Speaker 2: the red is thiet. No, it's blood. It's blood red
- 30:44Speaker 2: because it has to be. It has to be.
- 30:46Speaker 3: Yeah, very good, really really good explanation.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Man.
- 30:50Speaker 4: I'm going to go back and listen to it again
- 30:52Speaker 4: now with all that in mind, and I give it extra.
- 30:55Speaker 3: Layers you probably hope, so post down a rabbit hole,
- 30:57Speaker 3: bro will never come out.
- 31:00Speaker 2: So well, that's the idea, right if you if you
- 31:02Speaker 2: have a little bit of No one has that much time,
- 31:04Speaker 2: but if you have the time to go, oh my god,
- 31:06Speaker 2: I need to figure this out, you can kind of
- 31:08Speaker 2: go down and look at the symbolism and look at
- 31:10Speaker 2: stuff and go, oh, what's this mean? Yeah, because we're
- 31:13Speaker 2: not done with the story either. We've got other things
- 31:16Speaker 2: that are happening now, which is fun, very fun.
- 31:20Speaker 3: Very good. Brother. What else you got coming up? Rare?
- 31:22Speaker 3: You go on your show's coming up that anyone can
- 31:23Speaker 3: catch it.
- 31:24Speaker 2: Yeah, dude, absolutely, So we're playing in Sydney. Well, actually,
- 31:27Speaker 2: by that, when does this come out, because I don't
- 31:28Speaker 2: know when I'm going to publish it today.
- 31:30Speaker 4: Rather I'm going to get it since it took me
- 31:31Speaker 4: so long to talk to young and I'll make sure
- 31:33Speaker 4: I get an interview out.
- 31:34Speaker 3: Click.
- 31:34Speaker 2: You're a gem, Thank you so much. So okay, this
- 31:38Speaker 2: this Friday, we're in Willongong. Next Saturday we're in Sydney.
- 31:43Speaker 2: So this so this Friday we're at the side dooor
- 31:45Speaker 2: Theater at will and Gong. Next Saturday there's the Good
- 31:47Speaker 2: Intent Saturday's thing that they do at the Landsdown. We're
- 31:50Speaker 2: headlining the event there, and then after that we have
- 31:55Speaker 2: I don't know if I'm allowed to talk about it
- 31:56Speaker 2: because it hasn't technically been announced yet, but there is
- 31:58Speaker 2: a there is a series of shows that are happening
- 32:03Speaker 2: along the country and then the next one that's been
- 32:07Speaker 2: announced is we're playing with wild Heart and Villafi on
- 32:09Speaker 2: the ninth of November at the Bertiken in Sydney. But
- 32:13Speaker 2: there will be other stuff between the Sydney show that
- 32:17Speaker 2: we've aronnounced and then there is a bunch of a
- 32:19Speaker 2: big bunch of stuff, so hopefully that doesn't get me
- 32:23Speaker 2: in trouble.
- 32:24Speaker 4: All right, right, well, thanks to your Tom Brave, it's
- 32:26Speaker 4: been a pleasure as always. They eat identity crisis is
- 32:30Speaker 4: out now sounds like a cracker. It is a crack

- 32:36Speaker 4: know what's going on.
- 32:36Speaker 3: Right, So it's like but everything you will catch up soon.
