- 1:01Speaker 2: Juicy Scoop. We've got White Lotus, we've got Hot Topics,
- 1:06Speaker 2: and we are dying for sex. That's right. I have
- 1:08Speaker 2: a great interview with Nikki Boyer, who came on before.
- 1:13Speaker 2: She is the executive producer of the hit show Dying
- 1:16Speaker 2: for Sex, starring Michelle Williams. Her character is Jenny Slate's
- 1:21Speaker 2: playing it. Amazing. We had such a juicy interview. It's
- 1:24Speaker 2: so interesting how the TV was made, the truth behind
- 1:29Speaker 2: their real-life experience, and the podcast that inspired the TV show.
- 1:33Speaker 2: So we have that interview, but first I have to
- 1:35Speaker 2: talk about White Lotus. So I'm going to talk about
- 1:38Speaker 2: White Lotus, but I know some of you are not
- 1:40Speaker 2: interested and didn't watch it or are saving it, so
- 1:42Speaker 2: you can skip about 12 minutes, and then I do
- 1:45Speaker 2: a couple hot topics, and then we've got a really
- 1:47Speaker 2: juicy interview with Nikki Boyer about dying for sex. Okay,
- 1:51Speaker 2: now let's get into the White Lotus finale.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:56Speaker 2: This is the third season. I've watched the first two. Still,
- 2:00Speaker 2: my favorite was probably the first one, which was Hawaii.
- 2:05Speaker 2: But I thoroughly enjoyed it. There's so few things that
- 2:08Speaker 2: I'm excited to watch on a weekly basis. So with
- 2:10Speaker 2: that being said, let's get into it. I did have
- 2:15Speaker 2: a hard time sleeping, thinking about it constantly. So then
- 2:20Speaker 2: it was good. If it kept you thinking, it was good.
- 2:22Speaker 2: I know there's a lot of criticism out there. But
- 2:25Speaker 2: I thought it was good for a lot of reasons.
- 2:28Speaker 2: For one, my favorite thing in the whole series at
- 2:32Speaker 2: the end was the massage therapist and her son, who
- 2:37Speaker 2: was so cute, named Zion was his character's name. He
- 2:41Speaker 2: comes and I love that. I love their relationship. I
- 2:46Speaker 2: love that he was a business student. I love that
- 2:48Speaker 2: he had his mom's back. I love that he encouraged
- 2:50Speaker 2: her to be more ruthless in business and go to Tanya's.
- 2:56Speaker 2: husband and say a hundred's not enough. And I thought
- 3:00Speaker 2: they were going to go for a million and he
- 3:01Speaker 2: went for 5 million and then she got up and
- 3:04Speaker 2: then she was in on it. Like, I just loved
- 3:06Speaker 2: that they had such a special relationship. Being that, you know,
- 3:10Speaker 2: my son's graduating from business school a little bit and
- 3:13Speaker 2: he has a great business mind. I just liked that
- 3:16Speaker 2: relationship more than anything. The part that I think is
- 3:21Speaker 2: really interesting that a lot of people might not be
- 3:23Speaker 2: aware of is there was a storyline cut out of it.
- 3:29Speaker 2: And that was of the three women that were in
- 3:32Speaker 2: their late 40s, you know, high school childhood friends. The
- 3:36Speaker 2: one woman who gives an incredible monologue at the final
- 3:40Speaker 2: dinner with blonde hair, she was the woman who was
- 3:44Speaker 2: an attorney and lived in New York and didn't seem
- 3:50Speaker 2: to be not totally fitting in as well with her
- 3:52Speaker 2: two best friends, who was the actress and the girl
- 3:55Speaker 2: who was religious and talked about her pastor. So the
- 4:01Speaker 2: dynamic was all really interesting, especially to someone like me.
- 4:05Speaker 2: But in that monologue, at the end, she says, And
- 4:11Speaker 2: I'm just really happy to be here. And I'm happy
- 4:14Speaker 2: that you have a beautiful face to the actress. And
- 4:16Speaker 2: I'm happy that you have a beautiful life. And I
- 4:19Speaker 2: was like, OK, that's kind of a dig. Like, why?
- 4:24Speaker 2: If you really wanted to be nice to your friends
- 4:26Speaker 2: where you kind of had a weird two weeks and
- 4:28Speaker 2: there were some issues with them, but you are there.
- 4:31Speaker 2: I'm like, I think she's saying this because she has
- 4:34Speaker 2: had some weirdness. in her life and with them. But
- 4:37Speaker 2: at this point in her life, she does not want
- 4:40Speaker 2: to lose them as friends, even though they kind of
- 4:42Speaker 2: had a weird week and she doesn't know if she
- 4:44Speaker 2: really even likes either one of them. I think she
- 4:47Speaker 2: knows if I met them today, they wouldn't be my people.
- 4:50Speaker 2: I wouldn't be friends with them. But we do have
- 4:53Speaker 2: a history like sisters and I don't want to not
- 4:58Speaker 2: be friends with them anymore. So I want to stay friends.
- 5:00Speaker 2: I want to be invited to the next free trip
- 5:02Speaker 2: by the actress. But at the same time, The fact
- 5:05Speaker 2: that neither of them thought it was a dig, that
- 5:07Speaker 2: she said to an actress that obviously is on a
- 5:10Speaker 2: hit show that everybody loves. She's like, I'm glad that
- 5:12Speaker 2: you have a pretty face or whatever she said. Why
- 5:15Speaker 2: wouldn't she have said, and I'm so glad that you
- 5:18Speaker 2: are on this hit show that brings so many joy
- 5:21Speaker 2: to so many people. It's really wonderful. And I'm so
- 5:25Speaker 2: glad that you are just so happy in your community
- 5:27Speaker 2: and where you live and the life that you like.
- 5:29Speaker 2: She could have said it that the compliment had more substance. Now,
- 5:36Speaker 2: what I found out is she– what I thought was
- 5:40Speaker 2: interesting in that monologue is she goes, I thought it
- 5:43Speaker 2: was going to be– I thought my religion was going
- 5:45Speaker 2: to be my work. It wasn't that. I thought it
- 5:47Speaker 2: was going to be love. It wasn't that. I thought
- 5:49Speaker 2: it was going to be motherhood. It certainly wasn't. That's
- 5:51Speaker 2: not fulfilling me either, but it's time. And that was
- 5:54Speaker 2: like– it was a really great monologue. And however– I
- 5:58Speaker 2: was like, oh, I didn't even know that her character
- 6:00Speaker 2: had kids. None of them talked about their kids. So
- 6:04Speaker 2: I was like, oh, I would have assumed maybe she
- 6:06Speaker 2: didn't have kids. And that was like one of her
- 6:08Speaker 2: regrets of looking back. Well, one of her storylines that
- 6:13Speaker 2: Mike White decided to cut out is that she had
- 6:15Speaker 2: a child, a daughter who was non-binary, possibly trans. And
- 6:21Speaker 2: Mike White decided to cut that out of the story
- 6:24Speaker 2: after Trump won because he felt that It didn't have
- 6:31Speaker 2: enough of a place in the series and therefore he
- 6:35Speaker 2: didn't feel like he was giving it enough of a
- 6:38Speaker 2: spotlight that it deserved. So therefore he just decided to
- 6:42Speaker 2: remove it altogether. I think that was a big mistake
- 6:45Speaker 2: because I think that's really interesting and I think it
- 6:48Speaker 2: would have added to what she was going through, what
- 6:51Speaker 2: she was struggling with. you know, her position in New York,
- 6:56Speaker 2: her life, how much, how different her life looks than
- 7:01Speaker 2: the Leslie Biz character who's at church in Texas. So
- 7:06Speaker 2: that's pretty juicy. Wasn't aware of that till I started
- 7:08Speaker 2: to like look up stuff last night. Of course, with
- 7:12Speaker 2: the Southern family, the Parker Posey family, I thought it
- 7:16Speaker 2: was really great. Coco Moco, who has been on my show,
- 7:23Speaker 2: A video came across that she put together that's all
- 7:26Speaker 2: the moments that the dad said the exact same lines
- 7:29Speaker 2: that Thomas Ravenal from Southern Charm on Bravo has said
- 7:34Speaker 2: over the years and put them side by side. And
- 7:37Speaker 2: I definitely think that those characters that he was inspired
- 7:43Speaker 2: by Southern Charm, I really do believe that. He said
- 7:46Speaker 2: in his interview, Mike White, after the show ended, that
- 7:50Speaker 2: he had seen or read something about a man who
- 7:54Speaker 2: was facing financial ruin. And rather than face his family
- 7:58Speaker 2: and tell them that their lifestyle was changed, he annihilated
- 8:01Speaker 2: the entire family. So I was just popped up and
- 8:06Speaker 2: like nerves a shaking when he was making these poisonous shakes.
- 8:12Speaker 2: and decided that the one younger son could survive with
- 8:16Speaker 2: less money. So therefore, he wasn't going to let him
- 8:19Speaker 2: drink it. Not thinking about how fucked up his life
- 8:23Speaker 2: would be if he woke up the next day and
- 8:25Speaker 2: his whole family was dead. And so when he has
- 8:28Speaker 2: that second thought and knocks the drink out of the
- 8:33Speaker 2: other son's hand, I really loved that storyline. And I
- 8:37Speaker 2: love that it ended that part because it was like,
- 8:42Speaker 2: ending your life voluntarily and all that is such a
- 8:46Speaker 2: horrible thing. And maybe this will be a memorable scene
- 8:50Speaker 2: to somebody if they ever are in dire straits. And
- 8:54Speaker 2: I do think it's a common story that happens with
- 8:56Speaker 2: men whose whole identity is wrapped up with their money
- 8:59Speaker 2: and they're the main breadwinner. We saw it happen with
- 9:02Speaker 2: that influencer recently in the Hamptons where Her husband had
- 9:06Speaker 2: ended his life for the exact same reasons rather than
- 9:08Speaker 2: face it or tell her that, hey, we can't have
- 9:10Speaker 2: Hampton's House anymore. Hey, you can't shop here or whatever,
- 9:14Speaker 2: get your extensions out. He'd rather, you know, he's in
- 9:17Speaker 2: such a place where he goes there. It's like a very,
- 9:19Speaker 2: it's not even like depression. It's like a real reason
- 9:24Speaker 2: of why I can't go on because of this. So
- 9:27Speaker 2: I thought that was great. And then, of course, with
- 9:29Speaker 2: the son, I couldn't believe that the son wouldn't rinse
- 9:33Speaker 2: out the blender. I was so happy that they let
- 9:38Speaker 2: him live like that. That's who I cared about living.
- 9:42Speaker 2: I never really cared that much about the English young
- 9:47Speaker 2: girl with her bunny teeth, though I found her very appealing.
- 9:50Speaker 2: I didn't really care about her relationship with that. I
- 9:52Speaker 2: didn't care about that guy's searching for his dad. That
- 9:56Speaker 2: whole story, I was like, really? Somebody killed your dad
- 10:00Speaker 2: and you're going to find him now at this point
- 10:02Speaker 2: in your life? And he was killed when you were not?
- 10:04Speaker 2: Like the whole thing, I don't know. It wasn't explained
- 10:07Speaker 2: well enough. I kept waiting for there to be some
- 10:10Speaker 2: other stronger connection to him and some of the other characters.
- 10:15Speaker 2: And there wasn't. But I was fascinated. in the episode
- 10:20Speaker 2: where she saw him again and she loved him so
- 10:23Speaker 2: much and she's like if something bad happens to you
- 10:25Speaker 2: it happens to me and it was like I'm like
- 10:27Speaker 2: why are you this young girl so attached to like
- 10:31Speaker 2: this much older guy is it just because he took
- 10:34Speaker 2: you two weeks to this you know very nice vacation
- 10:37Speaker 2: I mean he isn't a billionaire like why are you
- 10:40Speaker 2: so in love with him but the fact that He
- 10:44Speaker 2: loses it and kills the dad to only find out
- 10:47Speaker 2: he is your father, like that Star Wars moment, which
- 10:49Speaker 2: I'm not a Star Wars person, so I didn't like it. And,
- 10:54Speaker 2: you know, I was just told by my editor that
- 10:58Speaker 2: one of the stories online was that the wife was
- 11:01Speaker 2: going to turn out that she was trans and she
- 11:03Speaker 2: was actually his father. And I would have much preferred
- 11:07Speaker 2: that as I think that would be a juicier twist.
- 11:11Speaker 2: But anyway— Then when his girlfriend ends up getting killed
- 11:15Speaker 2: as well because he's so out for revenge and that
- 11:19Speaker 2: whole storyline of like then the thing you love the most,
- 11:21Speaker 2: very like Romeo and Juliet kind of a thing. But
- 11:24Speaker 2: I'm like, dude, you never cared about it. You didn't
- 11:26Speaker 2: care when she was bit by the snake. You didn't
- 11:28Speaker 2: care when she was like robbed at gunpoint or whatever
- 11:31Speaker 2: happened at the store. You never really cared that much.
- 11:34Speaker 2: You acted like she was like a mosquito around you
- 11:37Speaker 2: the whole time. And now you're like, no, I really
- 11:40Speaker 2: do love her. And so I think that's a good
- 11:44Speaker 2: lesson for girls to see, to not throw away your
- 11:47Speaker 2: life for a guy. Don't think that you can change him,
- 11:50Speaker 2: especially when they're as old as he. And know that
- 11:53Speaker 2: you can do better. It's always these, you know how
- 11:55Speaker 2: many women are in prison right now because of the
- 11:58Speaker 2: man they were with? Either they were helping them out
- 12:03Speaker 2: to a drug deal or something, or they were completely
- 12:08Speaker 2: complacent in some other crimes they were doing or you
- 12:10Speaker 2: know or put them above their children like don't like
- 12:14Speaker 2: no man is worth it especially when they're running through
- 12:17Speaker 2: danger and then here they're taking the photo gun shots
- 12:20Speaker 2: are going the three women are running and then we
- 12:24Speaker 2: see them on the on the boat like laughing still
- 12:27Speaker 2: having like a great time um you know back going
- 12:30Speaker 2: back to the states like you maybe they were a
- 12:32Speaker 2: little shaken up but i think you'd be way more
- 12:35Speaker 2: shaken up if i You were dodging bullets and witnessed
- 12:40Speaker 2: like several people get killed right in front of you.
- 12:43Speaker 2: So I didn't think that was very realistic. But I
- 12:45Speaker 2: loved the final scene with Parker Posey and the three
- 12:50Speaker 2: kids and the dad knowing that once they get their
- 12:53Speaker 2: phones back, the news is going to come that he's
- 12:55Speaker 2: in trouble and their lives are going to change. And
- 12:58Speaker 2: he realizes we are a strong family. And of course,
- 13:01Speaker 2: let's get to the incest. So how great was it
- 13:04Speaker 2: that just the little brother was a people pleaser? He
- 13:08Speaker 2: wasn't necessarily in love with his brother or gay or whatever.
- 13:16Speaker 2: He just said, I felt like you were left out,
- 13:18Speaker 2: and I know how much you like to jerk off,
- 13:21Speaker 2: and so I just thought I would lean over and
- 13:22Speaker 2: help you. I'm like, okay. I don't even think my
- 13:27Speaker 2: sons will wash each other's plate if I ask them to.
- 13:29Speaker 2: So thank God for that. kind of like that there
- 13:35Speaker 2: wasn't a little more to it, that there wasn't some
- 13:37Speaker 2: weird shit that happened. Oh, that we also never knew
- 13:40Speaker 2: why Leslie Bibbs, the blonde, cute girl from Texas, went
- 13:45Speaker 2: up and said that to Parker Posey. Oh, we spent
- 13:48Speaker 2: a weekend together or we were at our friend's baby shower,
- 13:51Speaker 2: our mutual friend. And she was so weird. Everybody thought
- 13:55Speaker 2: that that would come back at the end of the series,
- 13:59Speaker 2: that either she knew her or there was an affair
- 14:03Speaker 2: or something. No, she was just a dismissive bitch. Really?
- 14:08Speaker 2: It makes me wonder, just like the storyline that was
- 14:11Speaker 2: cut about the– the non-binary daughter, and they were supposed
- 14:18Speaker 2: to say they, them, and then she would get confused
- 14:20Speaker 2: by it or correct her friends. That whole story being
- 14:23Speaker 2: cut out because Mike White felt it was not necessary.
- 14:26Speaker 2: I'm like, was there something else cut out? But then
- 14:30Speaker 2: you decided to keep that scene because you just loved
- 14:32Speaker 2: the way Parker Posey was like, no, I don't know you. Piper, please.
- 14:38Speaker 2: And I did love the scene when she came back
- 14:40Speaker 2: from doing the Buddhist night and was just like, I
- 14:46Speaker 2: don't think I can live like this. Like it is small. And,
- 14:49Speaker 2: and I mean, that would be awful that you raise
- 14:53Speaker 2: your daughter one religion and then she's going to just
- 14:55Speaker 2: go be like a monk after you paid for all
- 14:57Speaker 2: this college and everything. And you don't know where she'd
- 15:00Speaker 2: end up after a year. And it's weird. So I
- 15:03Speaker 2: love that she was like, thank God. So all in all, like, Oh,
- 15:10Speaker 2: the other thing I was going to say is I
- 15:13Speaker 2: was a little confused. I guess just the fact that
- 15:18Speaker 2: the massage woman had some relationship with Tanya, Jennifer Coolidge,
- 15:23Speaker 2: in the first season and knew that he now is
- 15:27Speaker 2: in Thailand, was her husband at one time. I was like, well,
- 15:31Speaker 2: she didn't really have anything on him. And if he's
- 15:35Speaker 2: in Thailand and he bought this house and he could
- 15:38Speaker 2: Google that he– you know, inherited all this money from
- 15:41Speaker 2: his wife. What does she really have on him? What
- 15:47Speaker 2: does she know about the murder? Like, that's what I
- 15:49Speaker 2: didn't get, why he felt he had to give her
- 15:53Speaker 2: so much money to silence her. And of course she
- 15:56Speaker 2: shouldn't open a business with a guy that she knew
- 15:58Speaker 2: for two weeks. And by the way, they didn't massage anybody.
- 16:02Speaker 2: So like, what is this special spa? Like, really? Burke
- 16:05Speaker 2: Williams is supposed to be shaking in their boots over this? Like,
- 16:08Speaker 2: and then she's going to So I didn't feel like
- 16:10Speaker 2: she screwed him over at all. They hung out for
- 16:13Speaker 2: one or two weeks in this resort. They boned once.
- 16:17Speaker 2: And now, no, she should not share her $ 5 million
- 16:20Speaker 2: and put him on. If she wants to open her
- 16:23Speaker 2: own line of spas, she should make her son the
- 16:27Speaker 2: CEO or the CFO and do her own thing her
- 16:30Speaker 2: own way. And so I love that she didn't drag
- 16:33Speaker 2: him along just because she had a little fun vacation sex.
- 16:37Speaker 2: So- all in all, like really stuck with me. I
- 16:40Speaker 2: love the show. And I can't wait for the next season,
- 16:46Speaker 2: which I hope it doesn't, I hope we don't have
- 16:48Speaker 2: to wait a year and a half. I hope it's
- 16:49Speaker 2: like already being filmed or at least been written. So
- 16:53Speaker 2: we talked about Blake Lively, did a fun little PR thing,
- 16:57Speaker 2: helping with the donut shop. And you know, the girl
- 17:01Speaker 2: can't catch a break. So a lot of people made complaints,
- 17:05Speaker 2: the fact that she got behind the counter and was
- 17:07Speaker 2: like doing something with donuts and had her hair out
- 17:10Speaker 2: like mine, which you cannot do when you're working with food.
- 17:13Speaker 2: You got to do the hairnet, at least put it back.
- 17:16Speaker 2: And so then this particular bakery was flooded with bad
- 17:20Speaker 2: Yelp reviews to the point where Yelp had to like
- 17:22Speaker 2: stop and really see how many were inspired in the
- 17:26Speaker 2: last couple of days over you know, Blake Lively's flowing hair,
- 17:30Speaker 2: interesting because she has the, you know, had the hair
- 17:32Speaker 2: products and whatnot, and what was truly, you know, a
- 17:36Speaker 2: real disgruntled person that, you know, had a hard bagel
- 17:41Speaker 2: two weeks ago. So, you know, you got to be
- 17:44Speaker 2: careful when you think you're going to have this great
- 17:46Speaker 2: thing happen in this PR event for your bakery, and
- 17:50Speaker 2: then this happens. Um, Also, there was another story by
- 17:55Speaker 2: the New York Post that Blake Liley revealed that it
- 17:59Speaker 2: was her idea to touch co-star Henry Golding's privates while
- 18:04Speaker 2: filming A Simple Favor. So I assume that was from
- 18:09Speaker 2: the first Simple Favor, which was, you know, a very
- 18:13Speaker 2: sexy show. Again, this is just their, you know, just
- 18:17Speaker 2: the people are building their case of like that. It's
- 18:22Speaker 2: unbelievable to think that she was really feeling like she
- 18:25Speaker 2: was being sexually harassed by Justin Baldoni. So that's another article. Now,
- 18:30Speaker 2: this one was so interesting. And this comes from Drama
- 18:37Speaker 2: TikTok OQ is this girl's name who did this. And
- 18:43Speaker 2: so she found an article in a long time ago.
- 18:48Speaker 2: Blake Lively was on. the cover of Marie Claire. And
- 18:52Speaker 2: she did this interview and this really stuck out to
- 18:55Speaker 2: this creator in which Blake said, when I was three,
- 19:00Speaker 2: I was really tall and my brother was a little
- 19:04Speaker 2: nervous about going to kindergarten. So my mom just sent
- 19:07Speaker 2: me to kindergarten with him. And after a few weeks,
- 19:12Speaker 2: they thought I had something wrong with me because I
- 19:16Speaker 2: just wanted to take naps and And I couldn't, like,
- 19:19Speaker 2: do the work because I was only three. And this
- 19:24Speaker 2: story is 100% BS. It's 100% made up, in my opinion,
- 19:29Speaker 2: because she grew up in Tarzana, which is where I
- 19:31Speaker 2: grew up. And I also put my son in kindergarten for, like,
- 19:39Speaker 2: he went to one year of public kindergarten because his
- 19:41Speaker 2: birthday was October 1st. 29th, and the Catholic school wanted
- 19:45Speaker 2: him to be the age before September 1st. And I
- 19:49Speaker 2: was like, okay, he'll go to kindergarten and then just
- 19:52Speaker 2: probably do kindergarten again, which he did. So we put
- 19:54Speaker 2: him in the public school in kindergarten, which they would
- 19:56Speaker 2: take him as long as he turns five by like, whatever,
- 20:01Speaker 2: January 1st. Back then, they probably have already moved it back.
- 20:04Speaker 2: But you have to show birth certificates, all this stuff.
- 20:07Speaker 2: You can't just put your kid in Because that would
- 20:10Speaker 2: be like, oh, I'm just looking for free daycare. Like, no,
- 20:13Speaker 2: they would have had to have immunization shots and doctor's records.
- 20:18Speaker 2: I mean, there's a lot you do. You don't just throw...
- 20:20Speaker 2: So the story is just a weird story that just
- 20:23Speaker 2: doesn't make sense. And in people grabbing all these interviews,
- 20:27Speaker 2: it is strange. And it's funny. It almost sounds like
- 20:32Speaker 2: a stand-up story or something that wasn't true. Like, it just...
- 20:38Speaker 2: I'll give her this. Maybe the mom told her that.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Maybe the mom joked. Maybe it was the mom's story
- 20:45Speaker 2: that said, oh, you know, you were so tall you
- 20:48Speaker 2: wanted to go to school with him. And one day
- 20:49Speaker 2: I took you there and they're like, well, when is
- 20:51Speaker 2: she ready to start? And I was like, oh, my God.
- 20:53Speaker 2: Like we don't know where the story really came, but
- 20:57Speaker 2: there was no way that you were enrolled in school
- 20:59Speaker 2: for weeks. And so, again, it just adds to how truthful,
- 21:03Speaker 2: how comfortable is she retelling stories that are not totally
- 21:08Speaker 2: true or completely created. So that's where we are with that.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Looking for a getaway that's truly special?
- 21:16Speaker 5: Ireland's Blue Book has just what you need. From country
- 21:19Speaker 5: houses to boutique hotels, from romantic castles to historic hideaways,

- 21:28Speaker 5: Visit irelandsbluebook.com to plan your next luxury escape.
- 21:33Speaker 6: I'm Darman, and this is What Happens Next. Each week
- 21:36Speaker 6: on the show, I sit down with extraordinary people who
- 21:40Speaker 6: have faced tremendous setbacks, and yet somehow have found a
- 21:44Speaker 6: way to turn them into their greatest strengths.
- 21:47Speaker 3: Life is one long lesson of chaos.
- 21:50Speaker 2: I'm heading to the Emmys, and I have police complaints
- 21:52Speaker 2: filed against me. When your free will was about to
- 21:54Speaker 2: be taken from you, what would you do if it
- 21:57Speaker 2: was given back?
- 21:58Speaker 3: Where did that need come from, where you thought that
- 22:01Speaker 3: you had to succeed in order to feel loved?
- 22:03Speaker 2: He said, I have a work dad. I need a
- 22:05Speaker 2: home dad.
- 22:05Speaker 3: What happens next?
- 22:06Speaker 2: When I came in, he started crying.
- 22:08Speaker 3: Everybody in life encounters hardships. What defines them is not
- 22:12Speaker 3: those hard moments that they go through. It's about what
- 22:15Speaker 3: happens next.
- 22:16Speaker 2: I decided to risk it all. I realized how valuable
- 22:19Speaker 2: every day was. You're worth the work. Listen, Dara, I'm
- 22:22Speaker 2: not going to pull punches. You can use your voice
- 22:24Speaker 2: even if it's shaped.
- 22:25Speaker 6: The stories are different, but the impact is the same.
- 22:28Speaker 6: Only one question matters. What happens next?
- 22:39Speaker 2: Hello and welcome to Juicy Scoop. I have returned guest
- 22:43Speaker 2: who has an incredible Hollywood success story, I think, as
- 22:48Speaker 2: we're sitting here. Nikki Boyer, you guys may remember from
- 22:53Speaker 2: my old Juicy Scoopers, and you are probably familiar that
- 22:57Speaker 2: she is the creator of the show that's now on FX,
- 23:02Speaker 2: Dying for Sex. But the story behind it, you would
- 23:05Speaker 2: come on Juicy Scoop to talk about because it is
- 23:09Speaker 2: the story of you and your friend. And then it
- 23:13Speaker 2: became a podcast, which why– that's why you were on
- 23:16Speaker 2: Juicy Scoop in 2020 to promote this podcast that was
- 23:19Speaker 2: on Wondery. And now– and I remember we talked and
- 23:24Speaker 2: I'm like, this could be a TV show. You said it.
- 23:26Speaker 2: And you were like– so I want to know. Now
- 23:28Speaker 2: that it's here, I want to know like the whole
- 23:31Speaker 2: process because– I didn't realize. I was like, oh, that
- 23:35Speaker 2: was a pretty quick turnaround. I mean, it wasn't. It
- 23:37Speaker 2: was four or five years ago. Right. But it's so amazing.
- 23:41Speaker 2: So this is on FX. Michelle Williams plays your best friend. Yeah,
- 23:46Speaker 2: she plays my best friend. Where you guys came up
- 23:47Speaker 2: with this whole thing based on her life. And then
- 23:51Speaker 2: Jenny Slate plays you, which I think is... Really good casting. Agreed. Yes.
- 23:57Speaker 2: So let's just go a little bit back. First of all,
- 24:02Speaker 2: our history with each other is very much E-oriented. You
- 24:06Speaker 2: were always like a panel girl, a red carpet girl.
- 24:11Speaker 2: You're best. What if Ross Matthews best friends? He has
- 24:14Speaker 2: a lot of best friends, myself included. Drew and I included.
- 24:17Speaker 2: But no, you guys really are close and you've done
- 24:19Speaker 2: a lot of podcasts and projects together. So we've known
- 24:23Speaker 2: each other through that. We've been backstage together quite a bit.
- 24:26Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 24:26Speaker 2: And at people's weddings together. We had so much fun
- 24:29Speaker 2: at Ross's wedding. How fun was that? It was like
- 24:31Speaker 2: the funnest. I'm like, can anybody else please get married
- 24:33Speaker 2: again and have everyone I know go to it? And
- 24:36Speaker 2: go to Puerto Vallarta and be on a vacation together. Okay.
- 24:39Speaker 2: And free cocktails. That was the best time ever.
- 24:42Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 24:42Speaker 2: I think that was one of the most fun weddings
- 24:44Speaker 2: I've had. Oh, I love that. It was really good.
- 24:47Speaker 2: I just love that man.
- 24:47Speaker 7: He's just been a constant support to me. And just,
- 24:51Speaker 7: I mean, we've been friends for over two decades almost.
- 24:54Speaker 2: Yes. So, yeah.
- 24:55Speaker 7: And I married him and he married me. He married
- 24:58Speaker 7: me and my husband and I married him in Wellington.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Isn't that cute? How did the two of you meet?
- 25:04Speaker 2: On a red carpet. Oh, really? Yes. Yes, we met
- 25:07Speaker 2: on a red carpet. I was actually working it. I
- 25:10Speaker 2: was working it and then attending it. Okay. He was
- 25:13Speaker 2: working it and I walked up to him. I mean,
- 25:15Speaker 2: we have a photo of this night.
- 25:17Speaker 7: I look like a toddler in a dress.
- 25:19Speaker 2: Like I'm so young. I was like 25. Yeah. And
- 25:23Speaker 2: I walked up to him. I think I was a
- 25:24Speaker 2: little tipsy. We started laughing. I was like, I think
- 25:27Speaker 2: you're great.
- 25:27Speaker 7: I didn't really know who he was, but I knew
- 25:29Speaker 7: he was someone who did something fabulous. And I wrapped
- 25:32Speaker 7: my leg around him and said, we're going to be
- 25:34Speaker 7: best friends.
- 25:36Speaker 2: So this is before Chelsea Lately, but he was doing
- 25:38Speaker 2: like Tonight Show, Ross the Intern. Oh, my gosh. That's
- 25:42Speaker 2: so great. And I wrapped my whole body around him.
- 25:44Speaker 2: Not much. I can't believe he called me back. But
- 25:48Speaker 2: we've been friends since that night. I love it. Have
- 25:51Speaker 2: you ever had a big fight? Such a good question.
- 25:56Speaker 3: No.
- 25:57Speaker 2: No. That's great. I mean, we've had disagreements about things,
- 26:02Speaker 2: but he's really hard to fight with. I like to fight. No,
- 26:07Speaker 2: he's just so good. He's such a good soul. No,
- 26:09Speaker 2: we've never had a fight. We're gonna.
- 26:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:12Speaker 2: He just inspired it. I'm gonna call him right now. Okay,
- 26:16Speaker 2: so let's talk about Let's go back. I know I
- 26:20Speaker 2: asked some of these questions five years ago. No, but
- 26:22Speaker 2: I love it because you said to me, I think
- 26:26Speaker 2: this could be a TV show. And I was like, mm-hmm.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Like I couldn't say much, but I knew back then
- 26:31Speaker 2: that it was on the road to that. Okay.
- 26:33Speaker 7: And I wanted to tell you, but I had, you know,
- 26:36Speaker 7: and also I was afraid to jinx it.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Right.
- 26:38Speaker 2: But you were so spot on. All the things that
- 26:39Speaker 2: you said about this.
- 26:41Speaker 7: And that you kind of predicted all happened.
- 26:43Speaker 2: Really? Oh, my God. Now I want to go back
- 26:45Speaker 2: and listen. Well, I have this prediction stuff that happens.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Are you clairvoyant? Well, I just had a thing just
- 26:54Speaker 2: the other day. I.
- 26:57Speaker 2: Was like, we were talking about Housewives, and I go, oh,
- 27:00Speaker 2: I just got a prediction. It's not good. I feel
- 27:02Speaker 2: like Garcelle's going to leave. And then she just made
- 27:04Speaker 2: the announcement. And then within 12, like, I don't know,
- 27:07Speaker 2: 20 hours later, I woke up to the announcement that
- 27:10Speaker 2: she did leave, and so I immediately was like, oh,
- 27:13Speaker 2: my God, I have to do a video of, like,
- 27:15Speaker 2: how one of mine come true. It's never anything... Like,
- 27:18Speaker 2: it's not like I can predict like a war or
- 27:21Speaker 2: an earthquake, but like, it's just kind of, it's stuff
- 27:24Speaker 2: in the business too, but also like, I think I
- 27:26Speaker 2: am a good manifester, but I also now like, I
- 27:30Speaker 2: don't know, something about being in the business long enough
- 27:32Speaker 2: where I'm like, they should do this or I could
- 27:34Speaker 2: see this happening or whatever. That's good. So take us
- 27:39Speaker 2: a little bit back about your friendship. What was her name,
- 27:42Speaker 2: by the way? Molly. Molly. So how long had you
- 27:45Speaker 2: guys been friends and what, like, tell us about the friendship,
- 27:48Speaker 2: how the friendship started.
- 27:49Speaker 7: Yeah, we met in an acting class in Los Angeles
- 27:52Speaker 7: in our early 20s.
- 27:54Speaker 2: And I remember I had like a pixie haircut at
- 27:58Speaker 2: the time and was like, Hey, everyone. Hi. Like social in.
- 28:02Speaker 7: The room and kind of bouncing around and flirting and
- 28:05Speaker 7: trying to make everyone like think I was desirable and
- 28:07Speaker 7: cute because I was 25 or 24. And I noticed
- 28:12Speaker 7: Molly and she at the time had really long brown
- 28:15Speaker 7: hair and crystal blue eyes and was very like striking,
- 28:18Speaker 7: like looked.
- 28:19Speaker 2: I always called her an alien model.
- 28:20Speaker 7: Because she had these cheekbones and this perfect, flawless skin,
- 28:24Speaker 7: never really wore makeup. And I just noticed her and
- 28:27Speaker 7: she was a little quiet, Unbeknownst to me, she was
- 28:29Speaker 7: completely judging me and was like, I don't like her.
- 28:33Speaker 2: Because you were just too perky. You know that thing?
- 28:36Speaker 2: Like basically me now? But do you know the expression,
- 28:40Speaker 2: the pick me? I was a pick me with a pixie.
- 28:43Speaker 2: That was me.
- 28:45Speaker 7: I would have punched myself in the face if I
- 28:47Speaker 7: was this age now. I'd have been like, sit down,
- 28:49Speaker 7: shut up, just calm it down. And there were these
- 28:53Speaker 7: guys in the class that were twin brothers. And I
- 28:56Speaker 7: had known them from working at restaurants previously. So we
- 28:59Speaker 7: were like talking and flirting. And Molly was like, oh,
- 29:01Speaker 7: of course she knows the twins.
- 29:03Speaker 2: Like, yeah. Yeah.
- 29:05Speaker 7: Flash forward a few weeks later, our acting teacher paired
- 29:09Speaker 7: Molly and myself up together to work on a scene.
- 29:11Speaker 7: And that changed the trajectory of everything because I don't
- 29:14Speaker 7: know if we would have spent that time getting to
- 29:16Speaker 7: know each other if we weren't working on a scene.
- 29:18Speaker 2: Right.
- 29:20Speaker 7: So I think I need to send that acting teacher
- 29:22Speaker 7: a thank you card because I never really put that together.
- 29:25Speaker 2: So then you become really good friends. And at that time,
- 29:29Speaker 2: were you both single? We were. Was she with her husband?
- 29:35Speaker 7: No, because I was actually with her the day she
- 29:37Speaker 7: met her husband at a restaurant.
- 29:39Speaker 3: Okay.
- 29:40Speaker 2: Were together. I was already.
- 29:42Speaker 7: Dating my ex-husband now. And so Molly was very much,
- 29:49Speaker 7: she was kind of the friend where you become fast
- 29:52Speaker 7: friends and then you can go a few months.
- 29:53Speaker 2: And not talk. And then the next thing you know
- 29:55Speaker 2: is you see each other 55 times. So we had
- 29:57Speaker 2: this ebb and flow.
- 29:59Speaker 7: In our relationship, but she was always a steady, but
- 30:02Speaker 7: she wasn't the kind of friend that I would invite
- 30:05Speaker 7: to like a happy hour or a party because she
- 30:07Speaker 7: didn't drink. And we did best one-on-one. Like we just
- 30:10Speaker 7: really wanted to be together. So I always saw her
- 30:12Speaker 7: very separately. She wasn't kind of like the friend's friend.
- 30:16Speaker 7: So our time together was always really intense and intimate
- 30:20Speaker 7: and fun, but it was always really one-on-one, like six
- 30:22Speaker 7: hour lunch, one-on-one.
- 30:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 30:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:25Speaker 2: So then what happened first? Were you just being friends
- 30:29Speaker 2: and she found out she had this severe cancer diagnosis?
- 30:35Speaker 2: Or were you already working on something creatively together and
- 30:39Speaker 2: then heard it?
- 30:40Speaker 7: That's such a good question because I think we always
- 30:42Speaker 7: secretly wanted to work on something. We just didn't know
- 30:44Speaker 7: what because I was an actor and a host and
- 30:47Speaker 7: she was really a writer so that we couldn't find
- 30:50Speaker 7: anything to match up on. But when she got diagnosed
- 30:52Speaker 7: with cancer the first time, she beat it. double mastectomy,
- 30:56Speaker 7: went through chemo, radiation, the whole buffet, as she calls it,
- 31:00Speaker 7: and then was in remission. And then I remember when
- 31:02Speaker 7: she called me and said something was going on with
- 31:04Speaker 7: her hip. And this was like five, six years later.
- 31:07Speaker 7: And I just, I didn't even think anything of it.
- 31:09Speaker 7: I was like, that's probably because you're just on the
- 31:10Speaker 7: elliptical too much. And then she called and said, no,
- 31:14Speaker 7: actually the cancer is back. And that's when they diagnosed
- 31:16Speaker 7: her as metastatic, which is terminal. And that is the
- 31:22Speaker 7: moment that everything shifted in our friendship, really, because we
- 31:25Speaker 7: started to work together, but also in her sex life,
- 31:28Speaker 7: because she said, I do not want to live my
- 31:33Speaker 7: last years in the way that I've been living. So
- 31:35Speaker 7: she decided to leave her marriage in her, as she's
- 31:39Speaker 7: like the sickest she's ever been, decides to leave her marriage,
- 31:42Speaker 7: gets an apartment near me and decides to go on this,
- 31:45Speaker 7: I mean, sexual journey of like, having as much sex
- 31:49Speaker 7: and as much fun doing as much fun physically with
- 31:52Speaker 7: her body that she possibly could and that was the
- 31:54Speaker 7: moment when she was telling me we were in front
- 31:56Speaker 7: of Trader Joe's on Hazeltine and she's like oh my
- 31:59Speaker 7: god I just had sex this morning I'm like it's
- 32:01Speaker 7: 11 a.m where were you and she's like well we
- 32:03Speaker 7: met at the Dunkin Donuts and we made out in
- 32:05Speaker 7: the parking lot and then we and I'm like who
- 32:07Speaker 7: has sex at 9 a.m at Dunkin Donuts and I'm
- 32:10Speaker 7: like I literally said Heather this is a show in
- 32:14Speaker 7: my mind. And then I said to Molly, this is
- 32:16Speaker 7: a show. And I said, and I think it's called
- 32:18Speaker 7: dying for sex. Like the title just like came to
- 32:21Speaker 7: me and she was like, let's do it.
- 32:22Speaker 2: We didn't know what the hell it was going to be.
- 32:24Speaker 7: You're like, I don't know what this is, but we
- 32:26Speaker 7: decided in that moment we were going to do something together.
- 32:29Speaker 2: And then We did. So then how did it work? Like,
- 32:32Speaker 2: were you because I can't remember. Were you like writing?
- 32:35Speaker 2: Did you put down a tape recorder? Like, did you
- 32:39Speaker 2: think podcast at this time? Because what year was this?
- 32:42Speaker 2: This was 2016. Okay. Like. You know how podcasts– But
- 32:47Speaker 2: didn't you have– were you working– didn't– Ross had one
- 32:50Speaker 2: before me. But that was not with you, I don't think.
- 32:53Speaker 2: I was on that– So do you have one at
- 32:55Speaker 2: that point? Okay.
- 32:56Speaker 3: No.
- 32:57Speaker 7: The closest thing I had done to a podcast was
- 32:59Speaker 7: dip in and hang out with Ross. But like I
- 33:02Speaker 7: didn't really understand what a podcast was, to be honest,
- 33:05Speaker 7: and especially the kind that Wondery does where it's like
- 33:08Speaker 7: a limited series podcast.
- 33:10Speaker 3: Right.
- 33:11Speaker 7: So this is so cool because it brings it back
- 33:13Speaker 7: to Ross. Oh, yes, I was doing that show with
- 33:16Speaker 7: Ross because the CEO of Wondery came in to say
- 33:20Speaker 7: hi to Ross.
- 33:21Speaker 2: And I was like, oh, hi, nice to meet you.
- 33:23Speaker 2: So flash forward years later. Wait, hold on. I also
- 33:26Speaker 2: want to say, sorry to bring it back to me.
- 33:28Speaker 2: I love bringing it back to you. First of all,
- 33:30Speaker 2: Ross is the one who said I should have a podcast.
- 33:32Speaker 2: To you. When he was at Podcast One and then
- 33:35Speaker 2: I did Podcast One. But then when I left and
- 33:38Speaker 2: went to Wondery- I introduced Wondery to Hernan. Wait, what? Yes,
- 33:44Speaker 2: because then Ross was at Wondery for a minute, right?
- 33:46Speaker 2: You introduced Hernan to Ross? Yes. So I have you
- 33:50Speaker 2: to thank. I guess so. Let's really bring it back
- 33:54Speaker 2: to you. Because Ross was at Wondery for a minute.
- 33:56Speaker 2: And that's when I met Hernan, who was the CEO
- 33:58Speaker 2: at the time. He came in. I met him briefly.
- 34:01Speaker 2: And then it was kind of a, you know, it's
- 34:02Speaker 2: nice to meet you. And then flash forward when Molly
- 34:04Speaker 2: and I were like, do we make a TV show?
- 34:07Speaker 2: Do we make, what do we do? Like, how do
- 34:08Speaker 2: we do this? Do we write a one-sheeter? I mean,
- 34:10Speaker 2: we were, I've been in the business for a long time.
- 34:11Speaker 2: Where you pitch a show, yeah. Yeah, but there's no
- 34:13Speaker 2: real formula of how to pitch a show. And she
- 34:17Speaker 2: wanted to write it. And so we started a script
- 34:19Speaker 2: and we started a one sheet.
- 34:20Speaker 7: And then eventually we were like, we should just start
- 34:24Speaker 7: getting pitch meetings.
- 34:25Speaker 2: And we pitched it. I went to New York. I
- 34:27Speaker 2: took like five or six meetings. For it to be
- 34:28Speaker 2: a scripted series. For it to be a scripted series.
- 34:31Speaker 7: But everyone we met with, they were lovely, but they
- 34:33Speaker 7: didn't quite understand the depth of it. And when you're
- 34:37Speaker 7: dealing with someone who is terminal and who is very creatively,
- 34:41Speaker 7: has a lot of creative integrity like Molly did, she
- 34:43Speaker 7: didn't want it.
- 34:44Speaker 2: Cheap in it she didn't want it to be like
- 34:46Speaker 2: sex in the city you know which I love sex.
- 34:49Speaker 7: Right yeah but she didn't want it to be um
- 34:53Speaker 7: she wanted to wanted it to be unlike anything anybody
- 34:55Speaker 7: had ever seen and I was like well that's a
- 34:57Speaker 7: tall order my friend but she was right because it
- 35:00Speaker 7: didn't need to be like a Cosmo article about girls
- 35:03Speaker 7: and cocktails and sex because it wasn't about that it
- 35:06Speaker 7: was about getting really comfortable in your body healing old
- 35:09Speaker 7: wounds all that blah blah blah so we decided to
- 35:13Speaker 7: sit down and start recording. A friend of mine owned
- 35:15Speaker 7: a production company and was like, you should just, let's
- 35:18Speaker 7: just get some studio time.
- 35:19Speaker 2: And we did exactly what you and I are doing.
- 35:21Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 35:22Speaker 7: But we spent hours and hours sifting through all of
- 35:24Speaker 7: our sexual escapades and going through like, let's pair this
- 35:26Speaker 7: guy with this guy and that'll be an episode.
- 35:28Speaker 2: And so we recorded a bunch. And then I said, wait,
- 35:32Speaker 2: that guy.
- 35:33Speaker 7: From Wondery, should I send, like, maybe I'll reach out
- 35:36Speaker 7: to him. And so by that time, Heather, Molly got
- 35:39Speaker 7: really sick and she was in the hospital. And we
- 35:41Speaker 7: realized- She wasn't coming out of the hospital. So I
- 35:45Speaker 7: emailed Hernan and he came to the hospital and met
- 35:49Speaker 7: Molly on her deathbed on February 14th on Valentine's Day,
- 35:54Speaker 7: three weeks before she died. And he's like, we're going
- 35:57Speaker 7: to do something. We'll do something with your story. We're
- 35:59Speaker 7: going to make this something amazing. I mean, how great
- 36:03Speaker 7: is that?
- 36:03Speaker 2: And then also the other thought was really interesting that
- 36:06Speaker 2: I remember from our last interview is, is that she
- 36:10Speaker 2: willed you her life story. How does that work? She
- 36:15Speaker 2: gives you the IP, the intellectual property, which we just
- 36:19Speaker 2: said on another show, that that's the only thing that's
- 36:23Speaker 2: selling right now. Like fresh creative ideas that aren't based
- 36:27Speaker 2: in true life or based on a documentary or something,
- 36:30Speaker 2: for whatever reason, they're not going for those. So this
- 36:34Speaker 2: already was something that people were looking to do.
- 36:37Speaker 7: Yeah, and it's funny because now I have my own
- 36:39Speaker 7: production company and I'm getting people's IP and I'm now,
- 36:43Speaker 7: like because of Molly, I'm able to now tell other
- 36:45Speaker 7: people's stories. But you're right, there was something really raw
- 36:49Speaker 7: and special about it. But I don't think we knew.
- 36:52Speaker 7: I think we thought it'd be really fun to record.
- 36:53Speaker 7: Let's make a podcast. And I really did think that
- 36:56Speaker 7: would be the end of it. But when Wondery paired
- 37:00Speaker 7: me up with Stephanie Jens, who was my producer at
- 37:02Speaker 7: that time.
- 37:03Speaker 2: Your podcast producer. My podcast producer at Wondery.
- 37:07Speaker 7: She sifted through everything with me in a way that
- 37:09Speaker 7: was just unreal, like went through Molly's book, went through
- 37:12Speaker 7: old recordings, went through. We did interviews with some of
- 37:15Speaker 7: the guys she had slept with. But Taking it back
- 37:17Speaker 7: to your original question, which I forgot because I'm going
- 37:20Speaker 7: to pause.
- 37:20Speaker 2: Which was about her willing you, even though, because, you know,
- 37:25Speaker 2: I assume she had some living relatives. She had the, now,
- 37:30Speaker 2: was he officially the ex-husband? No, not officially. So she
- 37:33Speaker 2: had a husband. So like. That's a very conscious thing
- 37:37Speaker 2: that she did. What was that discussion like?
- 37:39Speaker 7: It was, it's funny you ask that because I hadn't
- 37:42Speaker 7: thought about it in a really long time. But looking back,
- 37:45Speaker 7: like we were full on doing business in her hospital bed.
- 37:49Speaker 7: We had, she was like, I need to will you
- 37:52Speaker 7: my book, my likeness, all my photos, my phone, everything.
- 37:57Speaker 7: Everything about me, I have to will to you. And
- 37:59Speaker 7: I was like, okay, can't we just like.
- 38:01Speaker 2: How did she know to do that? She is so
- 38:03Speaker 2: fucking smart.
- 38:04Speaker 7: She was just a really smart woman.
- 38:06Speaker 2: And she also knew that... Legally, we needed to have.
- 38:10Speaker 7: A document to give it to some, I mean, right,
- 38:12Speaker 7: just a random friend, but you know what I mean,
- 38:15Speaker 7: not a family member. So we were taking meetings with, like,
- 38:19Speaker 7: we had a lawyer, my lawyer. We had her family
- 38:22Speaker 7: lawyer in the room coming in, drafting things up. We
- 38:25Speaker 7: were talking and laughing. It made us feel so normal.
- 38:28Speaker 2: Like, we were still working together, but she willed me everything.
- 38:32Speaker 7: So I think she secretly knew deep down, like, that
- 38:37Speaker 7: this was going to, do something or why would you
- 38:39Speaker 7: go to such great lengths? But she wanted to protect
- 38:41Speaker 7: it so that I had the free will to do
- 38:43Speaker 7: what I.
- 38:44Speaker 2: Wanted with it. I know, isn't she cool? There was,
- 38:46Speaker 2: by the way, there was this lawyer that came.
- 38:49Speaker 7: In and she was so sick and she was, I mean,
- 38:51Speaker 7: she was months from dying and didn't leave the hospital
- 38:55Speaker 7: for that chunk of time. She was very, very sick
- 38:57Speaker 7: but still had her sense of humor and there was
- 38:59Speaker 7: the lawyer that came in and he had on an
- 39:01Speaker 7: interesting hat and she's like half out of it and
- 39:04Speaker 7: she looks up and she goes, ahoy, matey.
- 39:06Speaker 2: And I was like, He had like a sailor kind
- 39:10Speaker 2: of a hat. So I still don't remember his name,
- 39:12Speaker 2: but I just know every time he came in, we'd
- 39:14Speaker 2: sail away, maybe, and he didn't know why. So we
- 39:18Speaker 2: were still laughing when we were like getting this legal
- 39:21Speaker 2: stuff all figured out. It's one of my favorite stories
- 39:24Speaker 2: about her. And so did she have parents and how
- 39:27Speaker 2: did they feel about the fact that she was just
- 39:30Speaker 2: being a reckless, you know, sex fiend in her last, like, what,
- 39:35Speaker 2: year of her life? Yeah. Well, I'd say two to
- 39:38Speaker 2: three years. Okay. Yeah. She went for it.
- 39:40Speaker 7: So- And it ebbed and flowed with her illness, right?
- 39:43Speaker 7: Some days she'd feel great and some days she'd be
- 39:46Speaker 7: wiped out. But yeah, for about a couple of years,
- 39:48Speaker 7: I think off and on, she was having these little
- 39:49Speaker 7: fun sex escapades.
- 39:51Speaker 2: But her dad, I mean, no dad.
- 39:53Speaker 7: Wants to think of their daughter in that way, but
- 39:56Speaker 7: fully supported it. It was just like, you do you, enjoy, right?
- 40:00Speaker 2: Yeah. And I think her mom was a little like, oh, okay.
- 40:04Speaker 2: All right. Well, but there wasn't a ton of parental judgment.
- 40:08Speaker 2: What was her relationship with sex prior to this? Was
- 40:11Speaker 2: she very monogamous? Was she religious? Like, why did she
- 40:15Speaker 2: feel that she hadn't, you know, done everything she wanted
- 40:20Speaker 2: to do in that department of life?
- 40:22Speaker 7: Well, she writes in her book, so I always like
- 40:24Speaker 7: to bring it back to her own experience of when
- 40:26Speaker 7: she was a little girl. And she speaks about this
- 40:28Speaker 7: on the podcast and in her book. But something really
- 40:31Speaker 7: tragic happened to her when she was seven years old.
- 40:33Speaker 7: She was sexually molested by.
- 40:36Speaker 2: someone in her mom's life.
- 40:38Speaker 7: And I think in that moment, and she says it,
- 40:41Speaker 7: that she, she was kind of split and kind of
- 40:44Speaker 7: fractured in that moment. And then sex became really uncomfortable
- 40:48Speaker 7: and weird. And she didn't quite heal from that. So
- 40:52Speaker 7: then when she was looking for partners, she was really
- 40:54Speaker 7: looking for safety.
- 40:55Speaker 2: And there was really.
- 40:56Speaker 7: Not like, she didn't really screw around like I did
- 41:00Speaker 7: in my 20s. Like my 20s were just like, dancing
- 41:04Speaker 7: around and having sex with whomever I wanted to. And
- 41:06Speaker 7: she wasn't doing that. So I don't think she ever
- 41:09Speaker 7: got that. And then she immediately got into a monogamous
- 41:12Speaker 7: relationship and then gets cancer and then loses really the
- 41:18Speaker 7: drive for sex. But then when she got diagnosed as
- 41:21Speaker 7: metastatic and terminal, something shifted.
- 41:24Speaker 2: And the fire was lit. And she was like, couldn't
- 41:27Speaker 2: wait to have sex with people. And how does she,
- 41:32Speaker 2: I'm sure we'll see it in the scripted show, but like,
- 41:35Speaker 2: how does she tell her husband? Because did they have,
- 41:37Speaker 2: did he think they had a decent marriage anyway? Here
- 41:40Speaker 2: he had stuck by her side through these illnesses with that.
- 41:44Speaker 2: What was that like to tell somebody like, hi, I'm,
- 41:47Speaker 2: life is short and I don't want to spend it
- 41:48Speaker 2: with you. I want to like, I want to see
- 41:51Speaker 2: 12 other dicks this week. Well, I think it started
- 41:54Speaker 2: off as cyber sex, right? Who says cyber sex?
- 41:57Speaker 7: Like a 90-year-old starts off with cyber sex. But at
- 41:59Speaker 7: the time, that's what we called it.
- 42:02Speaker 2: And I think he was really open to her doing that.
- 42:05Speaker 2: You mean just like virtual? Yeah, virtual. Okay. Cyber sex. Well,
- 42:10Speaker 2: I'm like, do you mean you meet someone online? Because
- 42:12Speaker 2: doesn't everyone meet someone online? Right, right. Meaning not meeting
- 42:17Speaker 2: anybody in person. Not physical. Yeah.
- 42:18Speaker 6: Okay.
- 42:19Speaker 7: And then she kind of confessed it to him and said,
- 42:21Speaker 7: I've been sort of exchanging these. And he was very
- 42:25Speaker 7: supportive because he understood he was also her caretaker at
- 42:29Speaker 7: the time.
- 42:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:30Speaker 7: And it's that dynamic I can't even dip into, trying
- 42:33Speaker 7: to be sexual while also caring for someone or being
- 42:36Speaker 7: cared for. And I just don't think that that was
- 42:40Speaker 7: a part of Molly that she had really tapped into
- 42:43Speaker 7: and picked a partner that maybe didn't match up with
- 42:45Speaker 7: the desire she was having now.
- 42:47Speaker 2: So I feel like he was really supportive at first.
- 42:50Speaker 7: And then I think when she wanted to take it
- 42:53Speaker 7: into real life, that's when the separation happened. So, yeah,
- 42:56Speaker 7: it was not comfortable at all. But at first there
- 42:59Speaker 7: was a lot of support there of like, yes, you
- 43:01Speaker 7: want to get into your body and feel sexual. And
- 43:04Speaker 7: maybe this virtual sex is the answer for you now.
- 43:08Speaker 7: But she wanted to take it into the real world.
- 43:10Speaker 2: So she moved out. So, OK, so then when you
- 43:13Speaker 2: decide you're going to go with Wondery to do the podcast. Yeah.
- 43:16Speaker 2: was a desire to go with Wondery over anybody else
- 43:19Speaker 2: because he was like, I think we can make this
- 43:21Speaker 2: a TV show.
- 43:22Speaker 7: So I sent the email to the CEO of Wondery with... Now,
- 43:27Speaker 7: at this point, Molly was about a month away from passing.
- 43:31Speaker 7: I didn't really know that, but I knew we were
- 43:33Speaker 7: getting close. And I thought, I have these 10 episodes
- 43:36Speaker 7: of my best friend, and I don't want her... Ugh,
- 43:39Speaker 7: it makes me so sad. I don't want her to
- 43:41Speaker 7: die without knowing... with thinking this is just in my
- 43:45Speaker 7: computer and not in the world. So I was going
- 43:47Speaker 7: to release it on my YouTube page. And I was
- 43:49Speaker 7: getting ready to put the episodes up and just release it.
- 43:51Speaker 7: And I thought, I'm going to email that guy from
- 43:54Speaker 7: Wondery back, Hernan. I'm going to email him back because
- 43:55Speaker 7: I never heard back from him. So I said, hi,
- 43:58Speaker 7: following up on this email, never heard back from you.
- 44:01Speaker 7: I'm going to release these in the next four to
- 44:02Speaker 7: five days. Let me know if you'd like to speak.
- 44:06Speaker 2: So you gave him to listen to too?
- 44:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:08Speaker 7: I sent him in a random email. I had sent
- 44:11Speaker 7: it like maybe a month prior and then I never
- 44:13Speaker 7: heard back. And this is such a good lesson of
- 44:16Speaker 7: like always follow up because he never got that first email.
- 44:18Speaker 7: He's like, I either didn't get it or it got
- 44:21Speaker 7: lost in the shuffle. Do not release them. Come to
- 44:24Speaker 7: my office and let's have a chat. So I went in,
- 44:26Speaker 7: I met with him. And then five, six days later,
- 44:29Speaker 7: he went to the hospital and met Molly. And it
- 44:31Speaker 7: was all just very, I.
- 44:35Speaker 2: Don't know. I hadn't thought to go to another podcast company.
- 44:37Speaker 2: I hadn't. Really, I just kept thinking, oh, I met
- 44:40Speaker 2: that guy through Ross. Yeah. Ross met him through you.
- 44:43Speaker 2: So really, thank you. Back to you. Oh, no, please. No,
- 44:47Speaker 2: but I am.
- 44:48Speaker 7: Those kinds of things are not an accident. Those things
- 44:52Speaker 7: happen for a reason.
- 44:53Speaker 2: And I do.
- 44:54Speaker 7: I think if I would have released it on YouTube,
- 44:56Speaker 7: it would have been a really great homage to my
- 44:58Speaker 7: best friend. But now it's like this powerful story that
- 45:02Speaker 7: I could tell, not just from my perspective, but my
- 45:05Speaker 7: other producer, Stephanie Jens, helped me. really sift through and go,
- 45:09Speaker 7: what's going to make this? What is going to make
- 45:13Speaker 7: Molly's out there journey? What's going to make it understand,
- 45:18Speaker 7: be understood by other people? How do we tap into this,
- 45:21Speaker 7: the humanity of this? And I don't think I knew
- 45:23Speaker 7: what that was at that time until I went through
- 45:25Speaker 7: that process.
- 45:26Speaker 2: So you guys do the podcast and then how does
- 45:31Speaker 2: it come about to, we want to make this a show?
- 45:36Speaker 2: So Molly passes.
- 45:37Speaker 7: An entire year later, the podcast is released on Valentine's
- 45:42Speaker 7: Day or Galentine's.
- 45:43Speaker 2: Day, they call it. Do you know what Galentine's Day is? Yeah,
- 45:46Speaker 2: it's just for girls. Celebrating the love of girls. I
- 45:49Speaker 2: didn't know what it was until then, which I love. Yeah.
- 45:52Speaker 2: So we released it.
- 45:53Speaker 7: And then before the show had even, I think, gotten
- 45:59Speaker 7: to the air with Wondery, like episode one hadn't been
- 46:02Speaker 7: released yet. we were taking meetings with amazing showrunners because
- 46:07Speaker 7: Aaron Hart, who works over at Wondery, he's a TV
- 46:10Speaker 7: guy over there, we were setting up meetings. So we
- 46:12Speaker 7: were meeting with showrunners, meeting with people that were interested
- 46:15Speaker 7: in the story. I mean, I had heard rough cuts
- 46:18Speaker 7: and they had heard rough cuts.
- 46:19Speaker 2: But there was already this weird thing.
- 46:22Speaker 7: And I'm going to these meetings, Heather, and I'm all
- 46:24Speaker 7: dressed up and I'm thinking that I'm pitching to the showrunners, like,
- 46:29Speaker 7: here's my story, I hope you want to.
- 46:31Speaker 2: But they were actually.
- 46:33Speaker 7: And they were pitching themselves to us to produce the show,
- 46:37Speaker 7: which I had never been in that position.
- 46:38Speaker 2: Never been in that position. No, no. Never in like
- 46:41Speaker 2: only anything but like hopefully they'll give me a validation
- 46:44Speaker 2: for the parking when this never goes anywhere. A hundred percent.
- 46:47Speaker 2: I was still the pick-me girl. I was still like, hey, everyone. Welcome.
- 46:51Speaker 2: Thanks for coming. And the people from my friends from
- 46:53Speaker 2: Wondery were all like– Why are you so... We're choosing. Like,
- 46:58Speaker 2: we are the... Like, we're the hot, you know, selling...
- 47:02Speaker 2: We're the listing on the street and it's a hot
- 47:04Speaker 2: market and everyone wants to buy us.
- 47:05Speaker 4: Had no idea.
- 47:06Speaker 7: And then I started to get clear about how powerful
- 47:08Speaker 7: the story was, which I knew, but I don't think
- 47:11Speaker 7: I knew knew. And then we took meetings and then
- 47:13Speaker 7: eventually we met with Liz Merriweather, who is my showrunner.
- 47:17Speaker 2: And then she... And what are some other things that
- 47:19Speaker 2: she's done? Because I know the name is familiar to people.
- 47:22Speaker 2: Liz did The Dropout. One drop. Oh my God, that's good.
- 47:30Speaker 2: What would you do if you could save your uncle
- 47:33Speaker 2: from dying of cancer? I love anything Elizabeth Holmes related.
- 47:37Speaker 2: You know she's in prison with a former Real Housewife,
- 47:43Speaker 2: Jen Shaw, and they are pickleball partners. No, I didn't.
- 47:47Speaker 2: Of course you know this.
- 47:48Speaker 3: What?
- 47:48Speaker 2: Who gets to play pickleball in prison? They all do now. Oh, gosh.
- 47:52Speaker 2: It's a big deal in prison. I played pickleball down
- 47:55Speaker 2: in the desert. I don't play pickleball. I bought a pickleball. Oh,
- 47:58Speaker 2: my God. I love pickleball. It's not going away, and
- 48:00Speaker 2: I'm thrilled.
- 48:00Speaker 6: Okay.
- 48:01Speaker 2: Well, we need to do that.
- 48:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 48:02Speaker 2: I love it. I love it. Okay. Continue. So Liz
- 48:06Speaker 2: Merriweather did the dropout, but before that, she did New Girl. Oh, yeah.
- 48:09Speaker 2: So she had great.
- 48:11Speaker 7: Great comedy chops, understood, like, really telling stories. fun, deep
- 48:16Speaker 7: stories that were very funny, great sense of humor, and
- 48:19Speaker 7: then to Dropout. And so when I met with her,
- 48:22Speaker 7: when we met with her- And the Dropout had like weird,
- 48:24Speaker 7: funny moments too.
- 48:25Speaker 2: Yeah, it did, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. And she's just
- 48:27Speaker 2: so amazing.
- 48:28Speaker 7: And then she brought in her partner, Kim Rosenstock. So
- 48:31Speaker 7: I had two amazing women. She was only Murders in.
- 48:34Speaker 2: The Billy, like just, I mean, hello.
- 48:36Speaker 7: So yeah, we started working. It was a very long
- 48:39Speaker 7: process though, because we met in January, 2020, and then
- 48:41Speaker 7: COVID hit.
- 48:43Speaker 2: Then all the strikes. So here we are, five years later,
- 48:49Speaker 2: and the show's coming out. And then this, and what
- 48:52Speaker 2: I love is, so it's on FX, but then of
- 48:55Speaker 2: course you can stream it on Hulu as well. It's
- 48:57Speaker 2: only on Hulu. Oh, it's only on Hulu.
- 48:58Speaker 7: I think there's a lot of, well, it's FX for Hulu.
- 49:01Speaker 2: Got it, got it. Right.
- 49:02Speaker 7: And Disney +, which always makes me laugh when I'm like,
- 49:04Speaker 7: what's dying for sex on Disney?
- 49:06Speaker 2: I honestly have such a hard time, like, even figuring
- 49:10Speaker 2: out TV. Like someone's like, oh, it's on Lifetime. I go,
- 49:14Speaker 2: I don't even know how to watch Lifetime. That's when
- 49:16Speaker 2: you just take your remote and go, look for this show.
- 49:18Speaker 2: I need to do all that stuff. because it's like,
- 49:21Speaker 2: but Hulu, I know how to do that on my,
- 49:24Speaker 2: I know I, my app has, I do the little house.
- 49:27Speaker 2: That's all you gotta do. And then I go to
- 49:28Speaker 2: the thing and then I can click on that and
- 49:30Speaker 2: I can get that. So that's good. And on April 4th,
- 49:33Speaker 2: you can, it was so easy. You don't have to,
- 49:35Speaker 2: just like one button. My app is like, what are
- 49:36Speaker 2: you going to do if I've got it? I'm like,
- 49:37Speaker 2: I'm going to hire a little man that like lives
- 49:39Speaker 2: in the house. That can, that's not as scared to
- 49:42Speaker 2: like light the fire pit. I'm scared to light a
- 49:45Speaker 2: fire pit. I don't know how to work the TVs.
- 49:48Speaker 2: I'm just like, whatever. And I was worried about sounding
- 49:50Speaker 2: old saying Berber sex. You're like, no, you're in good company.
- 49:54Speaker 2: It binges. You can binge it. Okay, great. So April 4th,
- 49:56Speaker 2: all eight episodes drop on Hulu or Disney +. Produced
- 50:00Speaker 2: by FX, and it's just, I mean, it's so good. Okay,
- 50:02Speaker 2: so now, did you ever have any, like, short list
- 50:06Speaker 2: or who you thought could play you? Because it's really
- 50:10Speaker 2: the friendship of you and Molly.
- 50:13Speaker 7: Here's the cute part about Molly, is whenever we would
- 50:16Speaker 7: do that fantasy, like, who.
- 50:18Speaker 2: Would play you in a movie, right? By the way,
- 50:20Speaker 2: who would play you in a movie or a TV show?
- 50:23Speaker 2: I actually have no idea. I mean, I would have
- 50:25Speaker 2: to explore... Well, I'm hoping that when I sell my
- 50:29Speaker 2: TV show, which by the way, I have the perfect show.
- 50:33Speaker 2: It's my book. You'll Never Blue Ball in this Town Again.
- 50:36Speaker 2: which is about my life from 18 to 30. I'm
- 50:39Speaker 2: the opposite of your friend. I was an old virgin.
- 50:42Speaker 2: I didn't have sex until I was 27, but I
- 50:44Speaker 2: would never admit it. I'd act like I was kind
- 50:46Speaker 2: of slutty on stage. I'd write all those slut jokes.
- 50:49Speaker 2: I would, you know, dry hump a lot, and I
- 50:53Speaker 2: never understood, like, you know, but then I was, like.
- 50:56Speaker 1: So old.
- 50:56Speaker 2: You dry hump people or things? No, people. I just, like.
- 50:59Speaker 6: Well, you know.
- 50:59Speaker 2: And then I would, you know, I was like, well,
- 51:01Speaker 2: now I've waited this long, like, I don't want to
- 51:03Speaker 2: just sleep with someone, so... I'll just have to wait
- 51:05Speaker 2: till he's my boyfriend. But then in that day and age,
- 51:08Speaker 2: the 90s, like after guys and back then guys took
- 51:12Speaker 2: you out on dates. So it's like pick me up,
- 51:15Speaker 2: take me. I, you know, always had like a nice
- 51:17Speaker 2: meal that they paid for. And then like I'd make out. No,
- 51:20Speaker 2: I'm not going to sleep with you. And by the
- 51:22Speaker 2: third date, they were like, this chick just doesn't like me.
- 51:25Speaker 2: And then I was like, well, I'm waiting for you
- 51:27Speaker 2: to say you're my boy, but I never said I
- 51:29Speaker 2: was like a virgin. So there's all these stories that
- 51:31Speaker 2: I had. So I wrote a book about that. And
- 51:34Speaker 2: then when it came out in like 2010, it was
- 51:37Speaker 2: weird because I was kind of like, well... Now there's
- 51:43Speaker 2: texting and all this, but the thing that makes it
- 51:46Speaker 2: work is that it was the 90s and there was
- 51:49Speaker 2: answering machines and leaving a message and you could play
- 51:53Speaker 2: the rules and it was a whole different thing. So
- 51:55Speaker 2: now I feel that that could be a show now. Absolutely.
- 51:59Speaker 2: Because I feel like Gen Z is thirsty for the 90s.
- 52:02Speaker 2: They're like, what's it like to have dated without... social
- 52:06Speaker 2: media and without phones and like, what is that even like?
- 52:10Speaker 2: And so. I love this idea. But I don't, I,
- 52:13Speaker 2: I don't know who could play me. I'm sure people,
- 52:15Speaker 2: people sound off and.
- 52:16Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 52:17Speaker 2: I'd be interested to hear what people say. Like would
- 52:19Speaker 2: be a, you know, a 25 year old version of
- 52:22Speaker 2: me that, you know, I wouldn't, I wouldn't give up.
- 52:25Speaker 2: Only once did I have someone do me for like,
- 52:29Speaker 2: like be a young me. And it was ghost stories.
- 52:32Speaker 2: Remember ghost stories, celebrity ghost stories.
- 52:35Speaker 6: Yes.
- 52:35Speaker 2: Who played you? Just some girl, but it was like
- 52:38Speaker 2: a very... She didn't look anything like me. I'm tall.
- 52:41Speaker 2: She was short. Not to be a bitch, but I
- 52:44Speaker 2: didn't think she was cute enough. And I was just
- 52:47Speaker 2: kind of like... And I'm watching this weird thing because
- 52:49Speaker 2: it's like me telling a scary story about... This ghost
- 52:52Speaker 2: story that was pretty much BS, by the way. Made
- 52:56Speaker 2: it up? Well, it was like literally, I did have a,
- 52:59Speaker 2: it was weird because the night before I was at
- 53:01Speaker 2: the London hotel and in New York doing like a
- 53:05Speaker 2: press thing for E or whatever. And I was kind
- 53:09Speaker 2: of buzzed, but I had this very vivid, weird dream
- 53:11Speaker 2: where like this, I felt like a man's like hairy
- 53:14Speaker 2: arm in my bed and it was just felt weird.
- 53:16Speaker 2: And I woke up like, that's such a weird dream.
- 53:19Speaker 2: While I'm in the airport to fly home, my like
- 53:22Speaker 2: agent or PR guy is like, have you ever had
- 53:25Speaker 2: a ghost encounter? Like celebrity ghost stories are looking for
- 53:28Speaker 2: like people to do it. And I was like, I
- 53:31Speaker 2: kind of had one last night. And then I'm like,
- 53:34Speaker 2: what does it pay? And he's like $ 6, 000 one day.
- 53:37Speaker 2: And I'm like, yes, it was terrifying. And so my
- 53:41Speaker 2: life is forever changed from this. So then like before
- 53:43Speaker 2: I called the producer, I talked to my friend who's
- 53:44Speaker 2: like into like ghost hunting, whatever. And she's like, if
- 53:48Speaker 2: you're in a hotel, say that the air kept getting
- 53:50Speaker 2: cold and hot and cold and hot. And then I
- 53:53Speaker 2: was like, also, I kept placing my lip liner. So
- 53:55Speaker 2: then I was like, was my like potential like ghost rapist,
- 53:59Speaker 2: like Trans? Like, I don't know. But, like, I was like...
- 54:03Speaker 2: Because I told the whole story about the lip lighter
- 54:05Speaker 2: kept being, like, moved. And then I was like, what
- 54:08Speaker 2: is this story? Anyway, so we do it. My husband
- 54:11Speaker 2: has never laughed harder because he'd never seen me be
- 54:13Speaker 2: on TV not being, like, funny. Like, not doing, like,
- 54:17Speaker 2: a Chelsea... Right, but you're like, and then... And so.
- 54:21Speaker 2: I need to find them. Anyway, so going back to
- 54:22Speaker 2: the story, that is when they– then they go– I go,
- 54:25Speaker 2: I was– you know, I go, oh, every time I travel,
- 54:27Speaker 2: I'm very organized, which I'm not organized at all. Why
- 54:30Speaker 2: are you such a liar on ghost stories? I'm, like,
- 54:32Speaker 2: very organized. I put my makeup and my lip liners
- 54:35Speaker 2: in here because that was a big story that the
- 54:37Speaker 2: lip liner kept getting moved. And so then they show
- 54:40Speaker 2: this girl, like, holding a mic, like, and I was like, what?
- 54:44Speaker 2: That's me? Yeah. I didn't like it. So you have
- 54:48Speaker 2: Jenny Slate play you. And I do think that's a
- 54:52Speaker 2: good match. So like how... And she's a great actress
- 54:55Speaker 2: and she's funny. And then Michelle Williams, of course. But,
- 55:00Speaker 2: you know, I just think the age and just their vibe, obviously,
- 55:05Speaker 2: they don't necessarily look like you guys. But how did
- 55:08Speaker 2: the discussion come of casting? Well....
- 55:12Speaker 7: When we brought Liz Merriweather on and Kim Rosenstock as
- 55:16Speaker 7: our showrunners, then all of a sudden I started getting
- 55:20Speaker 7: emails from agents and people kind of pitching me celebrities,
- 55:24Speaker 7: which was so crazy. fascinating to get an email from
- 55:27Speaker 7: a really really famous person's agent saying hey take a
- 55:31Speaker 7: look at her reel and here I am sitting and
- 55:33Speaker 7: I can't say any names I wish I could because I.
- 55:36Speaker 2: Was just like I'm gonna be watching blah blah blah's
- 55:38Speaker 2: reel to be like is she good enough you know
- 55:40Speaker 2: is she good enough to play me so weird and
- 55:44Speaker 2: there were so many options for Nikki but they really
- 55:46Speaker 2: couldn't cast Nikki really and Until they got their Molly. Right.
- 55:51Speaker 7: And Michelle, I think, had gotten pregnant and had a
- 55:54Speaker 7: baby and then the strikes. And then it just kind
- 55:56Speaker 7: of it kept going and going. And finally, once Michelle
- 56:00Speaker 7: locked in, we were off to the races because we
- 56:03Speaker 7: knew we had the perfect Molly. She looks like her.
- 56:05Speaker 7: She embodies her. She is like so good as Molly.
- 56:08Speaker 2: And then after that, we were someone at that caliber.
- 56:11Speaker 2: They don't have to read or anything. She doesn't have
- 56:14Speaker 2: to audition. I don't think so. Right. But you know what?
- 56:16Speaker 2: Jenny came in and did a chemistry read with Michelle. Oh, okay.
- 56:19Speaker 2: She came in and did it. She was like, of course.
- 56:21Speaker 2: And I love her.
- 56:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 56:23Speaker 7: She went in and once they got together, it was
- 56:26Speaker 7: like fire. And they just knew that she was right
- 56:29Speaker 7: for the role of Nikki.
- 56:30Speaker 2: And I can't think of a better Nikki. And how
- 56:31Speaker 2: did they do a chemistry test? They actually gave them
- 56:33Speaker 2: a scene to do? Yeah. So I believe, okay, Gina Bacharach,
- 56:36Speaker 2: I don't know if you know her, she casts the bear.
- 56:38Speaker 2: She's amazing.
- 56:39Speaker 7: And Jessica Daniels are the casting directors. So they facilitate
- 56:42Speaker 7: that Michelle comes in Liz I think Liz was in
- 56:44Speaker 7: the room and Jenny comes in and just like like
- 56:48Speaker 7: in a room like this with two chairs.
- 56:50Speaker 2: Yeah and they just sit and do a scene and
- 56:52Speaker 2: and was that incredibly surreal for you to witness I.
- 56:56Speaker 7: Didn't get to witness it but I'm just pretending like
- 56:58Speaker 7: I did but I think what was surreal for me
- 57:01Speaker 7: was to hear about it because I would get feedback
- 57:04Speaker 7: from like the casting directors they they tell me the
- 57:07Speaker 7: little tidbits of the story because this was all happening
- 57:09Speaker 7: I think in New York I want to say And
- 57:13Speaker 7: I just couldn't believe it.
- 57:16Speaker 2: When I remember it.
- 57:17Speaker 7: Was around New Year's, I got the call that Jenny
- 57:20Speaker 7: was going to play me and that we were starting
- 57:22Speaker 7: production within like a month. It was a long process,
- 57:25Speaker 7: but then when it happened, it happened very quickly.
- 57:27Speaker 2: And I remember thinking... oh my God, Jenny Slate, what
- 57:31Speaker 2: a perfect me for the Michelle playing Molly. Like it
- 57:35Speaker 2: just felt like the right fit. And so now, so
- 57:39Speaker 2: then it starts getting underway. Where did they film it?
- 57:43Speaker 2: We decided to film in Brooklyn. And that Molly was
- 57:46Speaker 2: born and raised in New York.
- 57:48Speaker 7: So it kind of felt like going back home.
- 57:50Speaker 2: And New York is such a, Brooklyn is such a
- 57:52Speaker 2: sexy city. And so how, like how does that happen
- 57:54Speaker 2: where the stuff took place in LA, but they decide-
- 57:59Speaker 2: we think for the sake of everything, because I personally
- 58:05Speaker 2: love any show that's shot in New York. There is
- 58:07Speaker 2: something special about it. It's such a character. It's a
- 58:09Speaker 2: whole other character. It feels hipper cooler. Like, how does
- 58:12Speaker 2: that come about where they say that? And was there
- 58:14Speaker 2: any part of you that was like, oh, all right,
- 58:16Speaker 2: I imagined us going to Alfred's, but whatever. Well, I think, right?
- 58:22Speaker 2: Hugo's for the 12th time. Yeah.
- 58:24Speaker 7: He, um, No, I wasn't really married to L.A. I mean,
- 58:27Speaker 7: when they did tell me they were doing it in
- 58:28Speaker 7: New York, I was like, oh, hadn't thought of that
- 58:30Speaker 7: as an option. I just assumed it would be L.A.
- 58:32Speaker 7: Michelle lives in Brooklyn. Liz lives in Brooklyn. I think
- 58:35Speaker 7: a lot of scheduling.
- 58:36Speaker 2: And a lot of organization. Yeah, yeah.
- 58:39Speaker 7: But Brooklyn for me and New York felt like such
- 58:41Speaker 7: a great backdrop.
- 58:42Speaker 2: It's such a sexier, grittier town than L.A. where you're like.
- 58:46Speaker 2: And do these characters, are they like. In the business?
- 58:50Speaker 2: Are they actors or are they just friends?
- 58:52Speaker 7: Well, Molly's character is not in the business at all.
- 58:57Speaker 7: And Jenny's character is a theater actress, which I thought
- 59:01Speaker 7: was interesting that they took some of that from my life.
- 59:03Speaker 7: I mean, I started in theater. But the irony here
- 59:05Speaker 7: is that I really don't like Shakespeare.
- 59:08Speaker 2: Like, I don't.
- 59:10Speaker 7: I mean, I've seen some good Shakespeare, but it's not
- 59:12Speaker 7: my jam. But Jenny loves Shakespeare and, like, quotes it
- 59:15Speaker 7: all the time in the show.
- 59:16Speaker 2: And I just think it's really funny. I don't know.
- 59:20Speaker 2: I just think it's. Super funny.
- 59:21Speaker 7: I love when they take liberties and make it so
- 59:24Speaker 7: funny and make it so– I mean, it's not– it's
- 59:27Speaker 7: all based in the truth.
- 59:28Speaker 2: Right.
- 59:28Speaker 7: But they took so many great liberties and kept so
- 59:31Speaker 7: many beautiful little sweet moments. Like, there was such a
- 59:34Speaker 7: nice balance of– making it their own, but also staying
- 59:39Speaker 7: true to me and Molly. Then now as a, as
- 59:42Speaker 7: you're being your life story, the creator, like the EP,
- 59:45Speaker 7: but you're not the writer, you're not the director.
- 59:47Speaker 2: Yeah. Like how much do you get to say or
- 59:52Speaker 2: show up or you just sit back, collect the check
- 59:54Speaker 2: and wear a cute dress to the event? Well, a
- 59:56Speaker 2: normal person would do the latter, but I was like-
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: Let me in here. And Kim and Liz were so,
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: so great. They always called me.
- 1:00:04Speaker 7: They said, Molly's the North Star of this project, but
- 1:00:06Speaker 7: you are our North Star as well. So I got
- 1:00:09Speaker 7: to be in the writer's room.
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: It was all virtual.
- 1:00:11Speaker 7: I got to sit on the phone and do timelines
- 1:00:14Speaker 7: and outlines. And they would, I mean, we would get
- 1:00:17Speaker 7: on the phone for hours. hours at a time sifting through.
- 1:00:20Speaker 7: So I was very, very involved. I think at first
- 1:00:23Speaker 7: there was a little worry of like, am I going to.
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: Be that person? Well, that's not how it was. Or how,
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: why are you changing that? The podcast was there.
- 1:00:30Speaker 7: Molly was so held sacred in that space. I felt
- 1:00:33Speaker 7: like this was a re-imagination of the show. And I,
- 1:00:36Speaker 7: I mean, I trusted, I mean, hello. So I just
- 1:00:39Speaker 7: trusted it. And there were very few times that I
- 1:00:42Speaker 7: raised my hand and said, Hey, question or let me,
- 1:00:44Speaker 7: but I, I felt really, and I felt very involved
- 1:00:47Speaker 7: and I felt really seen and heard and all of it.
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: Now, um, how do you feel about like life after death?
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: And have you had any moments where you feel like, wow,
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: that was a sign or I think she's here or
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: have you, how do you sit with that?
- 1:01:04Speaker 7: Well, the fact that, um, When Molly passed away, I
- 1:01:10Speaker 7: was laying, her mom was laying in the bed next
- 1:01:13Speaker 7: to her and I was in the chair sort of
- 1:01:14Speaker 7: facing her and my hand was on her leg. And Heather,
- 1:01:19Speaker 7: I fell asleep and something woke me up. And she
- 1:01:23Speaker 7: was sedated and her mother was asleep, but something tapped
- 1:01:27Speaker 7: the underneath of my fingers.
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: And when I woke up, I woke up for her
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: last two breaths.
- 1:01:33Speaker 7: And There is no way that that was happenstance. Like
- 1:01:37Speaker 7: she woke me up to say, it's time. You need
- 1:01:39Speaker 7: to get up. And I was with her and I
- 1:01:41Speaker 7: put my hand on her chest and my hand on
- 1:01:44Speaker 7: her head. And I said, I'm here.
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: And I got you. And she took her final two breaths.
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: And there was something. Was her mom awake? Her mom
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: was asleep. Because she didn't want her mom awake.
- 1:01:56Speaker 6: I bet.
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: I bet she wanted you for that moment to then
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: go and wake up the mom.
- 1:02:01Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: That's how it went. I mean, she kind of orchestrated it.
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: I love that you just said that. Yeah.
- 1:02:08Speaker 7: Something tapped my finger. So much so that I thought
- 1:02:10Speaker 7: a nurse was in the room hitting my hand. So
- 1:02:14Speaker 7: to answer your question is like, I do believe that
- 1:02:17Speaker 7: our brains could never understand what's on the other side.
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: I love when people are like, well, I know.
- 1:02:22Speaker 7: My faith says this. And I was like, well, none
- 1:02:24Speaker 7: of us know. We don't have a clue. And faith
- 1:02:27Speaker 7: is beautiful, by the way.
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: Have it. I love it. But we have no answers.
- 1:02:31Speaker 7: But when things like that happen, there's no denying that
- 1:02:35Speaker 7: something outside of our human selves was in that room
- 1:02:39Speaker 7: waking me up. So I think there's something else out there.
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: Yeah. What do you think? Well, there's interesting signs like
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: my parents have passed. Both of them? Oh, gosh.
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: And I remember one of those like interesting, stronger signs
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: that I had. is that I was like on a
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: girl's trip or something and we were waiting to like
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: get our, to go get our massages. And I told
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: this story about my dad, which I just know that
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: my dad would love this story. And it's about when
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: he was in advertising and he fought in World War
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: II against Japan. And now he was going to Japan
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: because he was an executive for Toyota. Okay. And then
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: he's meeting with these guys that at one time were
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: also in the army fighting him. And he was like,
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: this is so weird. And he got there, they stood
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: up and they're like, Oh, McDonald Marine and like bowing
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: to him. And it was this amazing thing. And it
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: was this amazing story of capitalism after war, whatever. So
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: I told the story and then, um, I go to get,
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: to go get my massage right after, like right after.
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: And she goes, Oh, and let me show you to
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: your locker. And your locker is 34. And my dad's
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: football number was 34. And every passcode, bank, everything was
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: 3434 for everything.
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: For everything. Yeah. And I was like, yeah. So I'm like, oh,
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: he's loving that I'm telling this story. He's letting you know.
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: So sometimes there's just things like that that I just
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: think are just. Too coincidental. Or if you open your
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: mind to the signs or when you think, or even
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: when people are just, I think, alive, like all of
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: a sudden, like. Like I just had a girlfriend call
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: me out of the blue, but she was still on
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: my phone to just ask me about her son possibly
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: going to ASU. Yeah. And we've been moving and literally
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: a box, the next day I take, I see a
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: box and by the third photo, it's just she and
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: I together. And I haven't talked to her in so
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: long part of that. So I do think there's a
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: lot where it's like you put it out there and
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: whether it's, your thoughts or this or that somewhere in
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: the universe, whether it's someone from the other side actually
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: manipulating 34 or whatever, you know, I just, I just
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: wondered if this coming to fruition, if there's any signs
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: or anything that you felt like.
- 1:04:57Speaker 7: I've been asking her for signs because I'm, I'm kind
- 1:04:59Speaker 7: of the Lone Ranger doing this without her. I feel
- 1:05:01Speaker 7: a little bit of that guilt of like, oh my God,
- 1:05:04Speaker 7: all of this is happening and she's not here.
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: Is there like a premiere party or anything you're going to?
- 1:05:09Speaker 7: Yeah, we're going to go. I'm going to be, I'm
- 1:05:10Speaker 7: going to go to New York. Do you have your
- 1:05:12Speaker 7: outfits together?
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: I do. I do. I'm glad you asked. I got
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: my lashes done. My nails done. I mean, I went,
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: I like left my sweatpants. Okay.
- 1:05:20Speaker 7: And like actually thought ahead. Well, as I was getting
- 1:05:23Speaker 7: my dress, I thought, she's not getting the dress.
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: Like, this sucks.
- 1:05:29Speaker 7: Like not having her with me. But yet without her passing,
- 1:05:33Speaker 7: this story would not have touched as many people as
- 1:05:36Speaker 7: it's touched. And have you had people reach out and
- 1:05:39Speaker 7: say- I am terminal and I am going to get
- 1:05:43Speaker 7: my fuck on.
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: Hundreds. Didn't even face me that you said, get my
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: fuck on? I want that on the mug. Get my
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: fuck on. Nobody said it verbatim. Yes.
- 1:05:57Speaker 7: But yes, I've had so many people that are like,
- 1:06:00Speaker 7: this is... I had one guy who I'm actually working with,
- 1:06:04Speaker 7: a guy who reached out to Molly on her Instagram,
- 1:06:08Speaker 7: but I had her phone and she had already passed.
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: He didn't know she had passed yet.
- 1:06:12Speaker 7: And he was reaching out and he's like, I have
- 1:06:14Speaker 7: stage four terminal melanoma skin cancer and You have cancer.
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: We're both dying. You're hot. I think I'm cute. We
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: should definitely hook up. And so now I'm.
- 1:06:24Speaker 7: Working with him on his life story because he is
- 1:06:27Speaker 7: doing what Molly did, but with a lot more adventure
- 1:06:30Speaker 7: and travel and meeting women all over the world and
- 1:06:33Speaker 7: sleeping with them because he knows he's on a ticking
- 1:06:36Speaker 7: clock and he just wants to explore things. But he
- 1:06:38Speaker 7: reached out to Molly to see if she wanted to
- 1:06:41Speaker 7: you know, connect. And I had to break it to
- 1:06:43Speaker 7: him that she had already passed away. But the ripple
- 1:06:46Speaker 7: effect of her story, because people don't know she's gone
- 1:06:48Speaker 7: yet when they listen to episode one, two, and three,
- 1:06:51Speaker 7: they're like, oh.
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: Here's this amazing woman. When we did the promo for
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: the podcast, we couldn't really reveal that it was that terminal. Yeah.
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: Because it kind of, so people would, yeah. A spoiler. Yeah.
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: Which is weird to take your friend's life and be like, don't,
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: don't tell anyone she's dead.
- 1:07:07Speaker 7: But it was kind of like, wanted to keep that
- 1:07:09Speaker 7: kind of a secret to give people this, like this
- 1:07:11Speaker 7: journey of falling in love with Molly and then feeling,
- 1:07:14Speaker 7: I wanted them to feel the loss of Molly. I
- 1:07:16Speaker 7: wanted them to feel like they lost her too so
- 1:07:19Speaker 7: that they could stop and go, okay, what am I,
- 1:07:21Speaker 7: what am I doing in my life? Who are the
- 1:07:23Speaker 7: important people in my life? Who do I want to
- 1:07:24Speaker 7: connect with? Who are the friends I want to be near?
- 1:07:27Speaker 7: And like, kind of inspire those kinds of thoughts.
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: So yeah, it was like a.
- 1:07:30Speaker 7: Secret and you went with it. I remember you were like,
- 1:07:32Speaker 7: so we can't talk about the fact that she's dead?
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: And I'm like, no. It's weird. I'm so happy for you.
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: Thank you. I'm definitely going to watch it. I can't
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: wait to hear what you think. Of course. I'm dying
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: to watch it. I'm dying to watch it. I'm dying
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: for sex. And, um, yeah, I remember once promoting the podcast,
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: how many people really liked it. And I love that
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: if you did enjoy the podcast, this is a different,
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: a little different of a version of that. And you
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: can have fun with it. Just like you read a
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: book and then you go see the book and you're like, Oh,
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: I imagined her to have red hair, whatever. It doesn't matter. And, um,
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: And so congrats. Thank you. And thanks for having me.
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: It's like nominated. And I hope this, it sounds like
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: it's leading to a whole nother, this isn't the end
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: for you. Like there's going to be other opportunities and
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: other careers. I mean, other things from this, from your
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: career as an EP and taking people's life stories and
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: making them shows. And I think it's like a great
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: time for that in the business.
- 1:08:33Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: Thank you. And so talk about making lemonade out of lemons, girl.
- 1:08:38Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: In the best way. Grinding it. Yeah, I know. Thanks
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: for saying that. I just I love you.
- 1:08:46Speaker 7: And I think that you've always just been a great
- 1:08:49Speaker 7: support and inviting me to talk about her. And it like, really,
- 1:08:53Speaker 7: at the end of the day, all we have are
- 1:08:56Speaker 7: the pot of people around us and how they make
- 1:08:58Speaker 7: us feel. I mean, you've always just been so good
- 1:09:00Speaker 7: to me. So I appreciate you.
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: That's so sweet. Thank you. Thank you. And tell everybody
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: where they can follow you, like on Instagram or get
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: in touch with you. I am on Instagram at Nikki Boyer.
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: I don't really use anything else. And it's N-I-K-K-I. N-I-K-K-I-B-O-Y-E-R.
- 1:09:14Speaker 7: And I'll be posting a ton of about the show
- 1:09:17Speaker 7: and behind the scenes photos, if anybody's interested. And also
- 1:09:20Speaker 7: Molly's book, like she wrote a book when she was
- 1:09:22Speaker 7: in the hospital, as she was dying, she wrote her memoir.
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: And what's that called? It's called Screw Cancer Becoming Whole.
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: And it's just on Amazon. I self-published it. And if
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: you're interested, like, I just love that she got to
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: be a published author, you know?
- 1:09:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: Well, thank you so much. I love you. Thank you. Everybody,
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: it's on Hulu. It starts April 4th and you can
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: binge the whole thing or you can Keep it like
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: a little treat. I like to spread stuff out. You
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: like a treat? Okay. I like a treat because I
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: don't feel like there's that much good stuff.
- 1:09:52Speaker 3: I know.
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: So when I get a juicy thing. But I also
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: think if you're flying somewhere, I like doing a series
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: versus like two movies. No, that's smart. That's smart. I
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: feel like the five, six hours go by a lot
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: quicker if you do a whole series. So if you're
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: going somewhere for spring break, this could be one that
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: focuses you.
- 1:10:09Speaker 7: And one more thing is I want to do your show.
- 1:10:12Speaker 7: And we got to figure out who we're casting as you.
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: You'll never blue ball this time again. Yeah. We're going
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: to figure it out.
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:10:17Speaker 5: Awesome.
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: I'm putting that out there. Let's put it out there.
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:10:21Speaker 5: Bye.
