Welcome to the show. Certainly hope you get a chance to enjoy the
1:56
beautiful weather yesterday. I did not if you were listening to the show,
2:00
I told you I developed a cold. By the time yesterday rolled around,
2:02
it progressed to a little bit more than a cold. But I'm not I'm
2:07
not going to die or anything like that. But it's not easy on someone
2:10
who literally never gets sick. Probably uneasy on my wife either. And on
2:15
top of all that, I get hit some time at the time with bouts
2:19
of siatica, and that kicked in at some point over the last couple of
2:23
days. So let me just say this, having a cold and siatica at
2:25
the same time is not fun. But we will continue to plow forward.
2:30
You got a lot to get to this morning. The top story locally,
2:34
of course, the scary situation the two places out of Shawnee Park yesterday afternoon,
2:38
around three o'clock, while a soccer tournament was going on, there were
2:39
shots fired at the dunbar area. The investigation continues into that no one injured
2:45
there had been arrest made. Chief Joe Crawford, who's the chief deputy of
2:47
the Canawa County Sheriff's Association, is going to join us to talk about that.
2:52
The Department, i should say, is going to join us to talk
2:53
about that a little bit later on. Plus last week there were announcements made
2:59
from the Westet into sixth the Schools Activities Commissioned about some major changes going on
3:01
with high school sports in West Virginia. The Voice of high school Sports,
3:06
Fred Persinger's going to join us to talk about that a little bit later on
3:09
as well. I just want to say, real quick though, it was
3:13
a feather in the cap, shot in the arm, whatever you want to
3:15
call it, for the Good One administration, Tim Brady and the folks at
3:17
the CVB and many more who give up countless hours to help out with this
3:21
bicycle event in Charleston over the last couple of weeks. It was absolutely off
3:24
the hook. So many people came into town for it. And I'll be
3:29
interested when I can get may or a good one or chief of staff Sutton
3:31
or Brady or some of the others on the show helped pull this thing off.
3:36
To talk about economic impact when that comes out here in a couple of
3:38
weeks, because that is going to be something I am sure, So we'll
3:44
get into that maybe here in the next couple of days. I want to
3:46
bring in those good friend Steve thatwul On Addams from Ogden Newspaper. Steven,
3:49
good morning, welcome to the show. Good morning Dave, thanks for having
3:51
me on. Thank you for being here. You and the lovely Jessica live
3:54
in the heart of all this in Charleston. Was it not electrical the last
3:58
couple days or what? Oh, it was so much fun and yeah,
4:00
we got to check out a couple of the races throughout the week, including
4:04
a Sunday's race. Jessica and her mother went in the Jessica works in the
4:08
city Manager's office for the City of Charleston, so played a pretty big role
4:12
in the behind the scenes planning on making this happen. Her and Tina over
4:15
there. Yeah, definitely an The and the entire city crew need to be
4:18
applauded. It was just a pretty well oil machine. Uh. And it
4:23
was cool to cool to see all the bikes bikes, I don't know what
4:26
else to call them. I know, the cyclists, but yeah, you
4:29
don't call them bike riders. But it was cool. It was indeed,
4:31
and again, uh, just this thing was incredible. I mean, the
4:36
amount of people that came in for and everything too. Excuse me, this
4:41
is getting this is the worst than I thought it was going to be so
4:43
we have interim Stephen that kicked off last last night. We were to get
4:46
that story a little bit later on, but I want to get your take
4:48
on the results of the election last week. Let's start with the race for
4:53
the Republicans side of the race for Governor Jim Justice, and actually let's talk
5:00
but the race between Governor Justice and the Congressman Alex Mouni for Senate not even
5:03
closed, man, No, not even close. I mean, we've seen
5:06
the governor do landslide elections now since twenty sixteen. We've seen him beat like
5:15
Bill Cole, We've seen him beat Whatdy Thrasher, We've seen him beat Ben
5:19
Selango, and now we've seen him beat Alex Mooney by wide margins. So
5:25
not a big surprise there. Every poll had him up and so I don't
5:30
think anyone's walking away from that one truly surprised by the outcome. And now
5:33
Justice will take on Wheeley mayor Glenn Elliott and the fall. Your thoughts on
5:36
that. Yeah, I think Glenn Elliott's going to give him a good fight.
5:40
I think they're going to have a good discussion of the issues. I
5:44
know that they're kind of pulling some issues from the left a little bit,
5:46
I think, to try to get some excitement going in to that election,
5:51
such as reproductive rights. I think that's going to be a big part of
5:54
both his and Democrat good manatorial candidate Steve Williams campaigns as well, and I
6:00
think they're both kind of working on that particular issue, So I think they'll
6:03
have a good discussion of the issues and whatnot. I don't predict elections,
6:08
but I mean that's I mean, we've seen past outcomes. They may not
6:12
be indicative of future results, but I mean Jim Justice is going to be
6:16
hard to beat. Yeah, I mean, it's it's insane how popular that
6:20
this guy is. And I mean he continues his popularity continues to grow and
6:25
grow. Riley Moore and Carol Miller both advancing and their races for a governor
6:30
Attorney General Patrick morris He moves on to take Huntingson, take on Huntingson,
6:33
mayor Steve Williams of the general after Morrissey out distance former delegate, more capitocre
6:39
and Secretary of State mcwarner and auto magnate Chris Miller. Yeah, look,
6:43
I think I think there was a window of opportunity. I think there was
6:47
a chance for more capital to win over Attorney General Patrick Morrissey, but what
6:54
that window is I don't know. Maybe if the governor Justice endorsed them two
6:57
weeks earlier and hit the road with them two weeks, maybe that would have
7:00
made a difference. We know justice can move numbers we saw with Amendment two
7:03
in twenty twenty two, so maybe that endorsement came too late for it to
7:09
make much of a difference. He didn't have the most money against Patrick Morrisey,
7:13
but he had money, but most of his He didn't put out as
7:15
many ads as either Morrissey or Chris Miller did, particularly TV, and I
7:20
don't know if there's a lot of what ifs, and maybe he could have
7:24
pulled it off. But it's not terribly surprised that Morrissey was able to win
7:29
that and he won him pretty close to the margin that was in the West
7:31
Virginia Metro News WV poll from rex Repass pretty close. They called it.
7:36
Yeah, how do you see the matchup between Williams and Morrissey. I think
7:40
that one is going to be a closer race just because of I think Steve
7:46
Williams has a lot of respect Both among Republicans and Democrats. I do think
7:51
he might see perhaps a contingent of Capitol supporters even throw support that direction.
7:58
Do serve a Charlotte Pree type thing nineteen ninety six all over again. I
8:01
don't know if that scenario really works again. But Patrick morris He's going to
8:07
come into this with a lot of money again. He's going to come into
8:09
it with his third party groups also spending money. And I think it's not
8:13
going to be a repea of twenty eighteen with Mansion in the US Center race.
8:16
I think it's going to be a little That was a close one too,
8:20
of course, but Manshell pulled it out. I think it's Morrissey's race
8:24
to lose. Talking to Steven All that Adams from ogged to newspapers here on
8:26
the Dave alland show a Dave viland showing five to eighty lives brought you apart
8:30
by your hometown baseball team, the Charlestony Dirty Birds. It seems like the
8:33
Bird's been on the road forever. They are off the night, finally back
8:37
in action Gomar Ballpark tomorrow night, as I'll kick off a series against Haggerstown
8:39
tomorrow night. Is a two dollars Tuesday, presented by Embassy Suites and Breeze
8:43
Airways. Visit Dirty Birds, Baseball, dot Communist even. I'm not normally
8:48
one who gets into political rumors, but this one continues to surface. It's
8:52
been around several months now, and now that Morrissey won the race for the
8:56
Republican nomination, continues to have some some legs there. There's been some discussion
9:03
that at some point, and hear me out on this, you may have
9:05
already heard this. We talked about on the air last week. Honey to
9:09
Mayor Steve Williams decides not to run, and the state Democratic Party then put
9:13
some a guy named Manchin to run in the fall. A couple of things
9:18
here. I had a text to the show last week for someone talking about
9:20
it I've been hearing about. I'm sure you have for months as well.
9:22
Read the text in the show last week. Immediately got a text from someone
9:26
who is high up in the food chain and with Democratic Party who said,
9:28
there's absolutely no truth to that room or whatsoever. Then received a text from
9:33
someone claiming to be friends with Joe Manchin who said, it's absolutely a possibility.
9:37
I've been told by people close to the Morrissey camp that he is busy
9:41
preparing for both Williams and mansion. And yesterday I got a call from a
9:48
good friend in the Huntington area who's very close to Mayor Williams, and he
9:50
said it's absolutely, one hundred percent not true these rumors, and he had
9:54
just talked to Mayor Williams about it earlier in the day. I think,
9:58
what the where this guy started as Mayor Williams and you're a campaign finance guy.
10:03
Mayor Williams did not raise a whole lot of money, correct, And
10:05
I would think that would be the time, even say, well, he
10:09
didn't have an opponent. I would think that would be the time, though,
10:11
to be raising money, because if you're a Democrat or maybe you're trying
10:16
to sway the independent voters. You look at how nasty that Republican race was,
10:20
and you know with all the the outlandish you know TV ads, and
10:24
you say, look, is this do you want one of these people to
10:26
be the next guynor what are you hearing about that? Well, that's a
10:28
good point about the fundraising, because I've raised that point too. I don't
10:33
quite understand why Steve Williams didn't use the downtime to raise more money. I
10:39
know he has said that he's got support among mayors across the country that he
10:43
can tap into. He does have, and his family does have a little
10:48
bit of independent wealth. I mean, he's got a brother that's a pretty
10:50
successful attorney that they can tap into. So maybe they'll tap into some of
10:54
that, like further down the road. I kind of got into it yesterday
10:58
on x normally known as Twitter, with Andy Nicely, the publisher of the
11:03
Clarksburg Xponent Telegram, who's a friend and full disclosure, we have a content
11:07
sharing agreement so they run my stories. But he was pushing that same rumor
11:11
too. I don't really see it. I've talked to the same probably the
11:16
same higher ups in the State Democratic Party you have who say it's absolutely not
11:20
true. It's a rumor. I've been told that behind the scenes, Mansion
11:24
supports Steve Williams. I'd much rather I would much believe or believe the possibility
11:33
of a Charlotte Pritt type thing where maybe some Republicans get behind Steve Williams.
11:37
But I don't see a situation, especially do you. You know the leaders
11:41
in the State Republican Party, just as I do they spent like last year
11:46
on a retired Joe Mansion campaign. Do you think that they would get behind
11:52
like they would be having discussions behind the scenes the have Joe Mansion up there
11:56
against Patrick Morrisey. That's not gonna happen. Maybe some cap people might be
12:01
pushing that, but I just don't see that scenario being realistic. Can Stephen
12:05
can the Republicans united again? I mean, last week Shelley Moore Capito and
12:07
some remarks said the GOP is her party and she's the head of the family,
12:11
which I'm sure didn't set well with Patrick Morrissey or maybe not with the
12:13
higher ups in the State Republican Party. I mean, can they come together?
12:18
I think it was a nasty campaign. It was a very nasty campaign,
12:22
and I know that there's going to probably be some work by some behind
12:24
the scenes maybe to throw a wrench in that process. I mean, you've
12:28
known Patrick Morrissey for a long time as f I I've covered him, I've
12:33
talked to him personally. He's a hard charging guy. I kind of call
12:35
in my call him today. I call him the cool way Man. He
12:37
just busts through the wall. He's a hard charging guy. And he campaigns
12:41
hard and he plays the win. That's just how he is. I think
12:46
there are some hurt feelings, but I think ultimately everyone gets behind him,
12:50
and I think some of the statements even by some of the candidates, including
12:52
the mc warner, seemed to be kind of conciliatory. We got to get
12:56
behind the person that's in charge now, and I think that's going to be
12:58
Pastrick Morrissey. And yeah, I think it happens, but they're Yeah,
13:03
of course there's hurt feelings. There always are after an election state wide.
13:07
Racist Chris Warner went the nomination for Secretary of State seemingly taken over for his
13:11
brother Max, since no one filed a run on the Democratic side. J
13:13
B. McCuskey easily beats Mike Stewart for Attorney General, Larry Pack was unopposed
13:18
for State Treasurer, can't lee and Hart has re elected as a commissioner,
13:22
and the nomination on the Republican side for state Auditor goes to Mark Hunt.
13:26
Quick correction, Thornton Cooper is the Democratic candidate for Secretary. I stand corrected,
13:31
Sorry, mister Cooper, I completely as soon as I said that out
13:33
of my mouth, I was like waiting Middy, that's not right, but
13:35
go ahead. Yeah, I think they have a full ticket. Not too
13:39
many surprises there. I mean I figured JB just based on money, based
13:43
on the fact that he's been a very popular candidate on statewide ballot twice.
13:46
I kind of figure he had it. Mike Stewart, Yes, US attorney
13:50
appointed by Trump, but it is really more known in the southern half of
13:52
the state. So I figured JB would be okay. Not. I am
13:56
a little surprised in Secretary of State just because of how much money. Doug
13:58
scaffs be right, But I'm also not surprised because the Warner name goes pretty
14:03
far with elections now uh and Chris Warner, course former state party chair at
14:07
one point, has a lot of connections in the party, still does,
14:09
and it's been a pretty successful DA director. It's not terribly surprising it would
14:16
go that route. Kent Lee and Hart, no doubt not surprised by that.
14:18
And he's been successful and this is supposed to be his final term,
14:24
so we will see about that. Larry Packuin opposed, not no surprise,
14:26
not too many surprises there, and even with ica Intermediate Court of Appeals,
14:33
I think a lot of people thought Ryan White would pull that one out just
14:35
because he has more money and more connections. So not too many big surprises,
14:39
and now we search for a new Senate president. That was the biggest
14:43
surprise of the election. I think to the point that I think even Tom
14:50
willis the person that won that race, so when I know personally, I
14:54
think he was even surprised that he won, especially by that margin. Well
14:58
of those things where I think it's a combination of I think obviously statewide turnout
15:03
was low, but I think turnout in the Eastern Panhandle was particularly low.
15:05
So that's going to bring out people they're kind of more red blooded Republican against
15:09
the establishment. Blair's probably seen as part of the establishment now, especially since
15:15
he kind of is a full time Senate president. Didn't spend a whole lot
15:18
of time in the district the last fear, and that's what they said,
15:20
what I'm on I'm hearing, that's what they ran on up there was that
15:24
that they didn't they just didn't see him right or wrong. That's what they
15:26
said. That that's it, and I think that that hurt him ultimately.
15:28
It's one of those things like the Republicans have tried to turn Senate president into
15:33
kind of a full time job. It didn't used to be treated that way
15:35
by Democratic Senate presidents. And perhaps in the future, maybe they'll spend a
15:41
little less time in Charleston and more time in their district. You can do
15:45
both well, Yeah, And I always harken back to Earl Ray, Tomlin
15:48
down for my neck of the woods. Earl Ray was pretty much a full
15:52
time Senate president. But he only left forty five minutes y you know,
15:56
so at the end of the night he drove back to Chapmanville. And I
15:58
was always told when he was governor too sure he lived in the mansion,
16:00
and like our current governor, but every weekend he'd head back home to chaman
16:06
Hill, so he spent time in his community. Every weekend he was tended
16:10
to his garden and riding his four wheeler. That's that's what I already did.
16:11
Some names I'm hearing out there, Senator Tom Tokubo, Eric tar Mike
16:19
Olaverio, Jack David Woodrum, Patricia Rucker some of the names I've heard as
16:23
a possible replacement. What do you hear, I'm hearing a possibility of of
16:29
course, she got two factions there, and I'm just gonna call him light
16:30
red and dark red light red faction. I could see Eric Nelson, who
16:36
just won reelection in his primary pretty easily over Chris Pritt to delegate. I
16:41
think he's a possibility more for the traditional moderate Chamber of Commerce style conservatives over
16:47
there, dark red. I see Amy Grady as a possibility for that side
16:52
of things, very very composerative, especially with her committee makes decisions. I
17:00
think those are the real possibilities. Tar, I've been told, and you
17:03
can create. You're a Putnam County guy. I've been told that Tar might
17:08
be in trouble going into twenty six because he'd put up a candidate against Judge
17:14
Stowers who lost pretty big. And I was told to watch that one.
17:18
Yeah, John Hoover, Yeah yeah, stowurs like wins that election. Tar
17:22
might have some issues in that county. I don't know if that's true.
17:25
But the thing about Amy Grady is, though, is as you said,
17:27
it's almost being treated as a full time job. And Amy's a teacher.
17:30
Yeah, and I don't see her. She's a five day a week teacher,
17:33
and I don't see her giving that up. I'll be honest with you.
17:36
I mean, I'm not saying she couldn't do the job, because I
17:37
think she certainly could. But I don't see her giving that up. No,
17:40
the possibility is Rucker on that side of things, who did trying to
17:44
run for Senate president two years ago and back down. So that's even a
17:47
possibility too. But yeah, a lot of jockeying going on between now and
17:52
December. Wind Caucus will ultimately meet to make that final decision. All right,
17:56
So we got interims going on what happened yesterday, what's on the horizon?
18:00
Sure State Senate passed eight bills or fifteen bills on the special session agenda.
18:04
The Senate passed eight bills. They did pass a bill restoring funding in
18:10
a way to Medicaid and the IDD Intellectual Developmental Disability Waiver program. But they
18:15
did it with some caveats where they got to file some reports. They put
18:18
that money into a special fund, and every time that they take from that
18:22
fund, they got to file a report to health officials with the legislature,
18:27
and if that money is still if there's money left over in that fund by
18:30
March twenty twenty five, they got to put that money back into General Revenue
18:34
Fund. So those funds have been restored, but with some oversight over them
18:40
as well. So we're going to see some continuation. House Finance meets today
18:45
at ten am to go over some of those bills as part of me as
18:48
well. So this will stretch out till Tuesday. But I don't think you're
18:52
going to see too many Shenanigans. This will be a pretty smooth special session.
18:57
Low on the shenanigans meters that would you're saying, Stephen, Yeah,

Chief Deputy of the Kannaw County Sheriff's partment. Joe Crawford coming up a little
22:25
bit later on to talk about this somewhat scary incident that took place yesterday out
22:29
at Shawnee, and we're going to get to the latest on that. There
22:33
has been developments actually within the last thirty minutes or so, and Chief Crawford's
22:37
can join us to talk about that. As I mentioned earlier, this may
22:40
have somewhat flown under the radar last week with the election whatnot, but there
22:45
were some significant rule changes coming to high school sports in West Virginia, and
22:48
the man who is the best ever to do it in West Virginia as far
22:52
as high school sports goes, the voice of high school sports in the state,
22:55
joins us now in the Palm Marstore studio to talk about it. Frederick
22:59
Persinger, Good morning, David, good morning, Welcome to the show.
23:02
Always a pleasure, particularly after political talk. It's always fun to slide in.
23:08
So what's going on here? You know, man, I'm not sure
23:11
it's significant changes, to be quite honest with you. They're doing away with
23:17
sections and it's all going to be regions. The one thing that I do
23:19
like about it, and I really haven't done a deep dive into it only
23:23
because I'm trying to get ready for the softball tournament this week and the baseball
23:27
tournament next week. But the one thing I do like it, I've never
23:30
been a fan of losing in your section and then getting another chance to go
23:37
to the state tournament. Never be you lose, you lose, You're out.
23:41
It's a tournament, right and it's not double elimination like softball state tournament
23:47
that kind of thing. But I'm I'm glad that's gone. So you take
23:51
the two teams that were in each you had a Section one, Section two
23:55
in a region. So now you're just going to have one region in there,
24:00
and you'll still have two particular two in the ending games at the end,
24:03
and the winner of each game we'll go to the state tournament as opposed
24:07
to well, I lost in the sectional championship game, but it automatically earned
24:12
me a right to go to the regionals where if I win, I could
24:17
go to the state tournament with a loss. I've never agreed with that.
24:21
I just didn't think that was right. So that's the major change. And
24:23
as somebody who has worked on a lot of these things behind the scenes of
24:27
the stations, that I've worked at. It is somewhat difficult to try to
24:30
keep up with all this when you're from a broadcasting standpoint. When you're back,
24:34
you know, trying to say, Okay, what games are we going
24:37
to broadcast? And you're like, well, okay, we got to kind
24:38
of keep an eye on this game because they have one loss going in.
24:41
It's it's difficult. It's difficult, and to me, it never really made
24:45
any sense. It really didn't. So I'm glad that's done. You know,
24:48
I'm still and I've been on record for a long long time saying I'm
24:52
not a fan of four classes in West Virginia. I'm just not. I
24:55
just don't think the state's large enough. And I get it. Every time
24:57
I say something, they'll say, yeah, but you're giving more teams a
25:00
chance to get to the state tournament. Okay, but what does that really
25:06
mean. I mean, anybody that's watched the first games of the first day
25:08
of the state basketball tournament most of the time it's Yon City. You know,
25:14
let's be fair, it is and I'm not sure you give me a
25:18
chance. Wow. I got to the state tournament in Charleston and I got
25:21
beat by sixty five that's not a memory I want, no, no,
25:25
I mean to me. So that's why I've never been a fan of it.
25:29
But still it's here. We got to live with it, and you
25:32
know it is what it is. So break it down. Give me some
25:33
examples, because sometimes you hear all this stuff and you hear it on the
25:37
air, you read about it, and you think, well, give me
25:40
an example using some Canagh Valley schools about how this will happen with these changes
25:44
that happened last week. Just let's go. Let's go with in Class quaid
25:48
A I guess it will be now in Class Quade, for example. Well,
25:52
it's always been in basketball for the last three years, four years.
25:53
But in Class Quaida, you had a section that involved Beckley, Greenbrier,
26:00
East Oakkillan Riverside, and you had another section that involved George Washington, South
26:07
Charleston Capital. So now you're going to be all together and those teams will
26:14
be seated by the coaches in that region. As opposed to having two separate
26:19
tournaments, it's going to be one tournament and it's going to be coming down
26:22
to where you'll have two final games in that region and the two winners of
26:26
those games will go on to the state tournament. You can't get into that
26:30
final game with a loss if you lose it out, And again I like
26:33
that, So that's a very very It's always been a very very competitive region
26:37
anyway, with Beckley and g W and South Charleston and those teams fighting against
26:42
one another. So now you just put them all together and throw them on
26:45
a hat. What's going to happen. Have you heard them a lot of
26:48
pushback about this, because I really haven't. You know why we have it
26:51
yet, because of the fact that, again I thought they were smart when
26:55
they released it. As you said, it got kind of up under the
27:00
rug because of the political thing going on with the election, and because of
27:03
the fact that it's baseball time. It's softball time. They're not even thinking
27:07
about basketball. You gotta go through football before you get the basketball. So
27:12
I think that's the only reason. You know, you're not seeing a lot
27:15
of pushback. Oh my gosh, it's a change, and no one's really
27:18
delved into the fact that we what's this really mean? And they probably won't
27:22
until we get into October, maybe September, October November, when we get
27:26
ready to start basketball. Str to Fred Persinger, again the boye of high

Family Pharmacy were the big story, I guess, Fred in the last couple
27:41

27:45
store the scores that we saw last season, I think one of the I
27:49
think one of the high school teams just scored another touchdown like twenty minutes ago.
27:53
Were you disappointed at that? And with the l I'll bring it back
27:56
to politics for a moment, where were you disappointed at the legs didn't do
28:00
more with it or do anything with it. I was super disappointed that they
28:03
got involved it in in the first place. They don't belong there. Are
28:06
you kidding me? You're telling me, why don't we have a special session?
28:08
On a special session? On a special session? I mean, we
28:11
got enough worries in this state, and you guys were just talking about it
28:15
before I came on with a special session going on now, fought fifteen bills
28:19
on the agenda for the Senate. They passed eight, but they still had
28:23
time last time around, or actually time before this, to say, hey,
28:27
here's what we're going to do in high school sports. Give me a
28:30
break. I don't think any state senator or any representative was elected to go
28:34
down and fix or break in this case, in my opinion, high school
28:38
sports. They should have led it alone. So am I disappointed they didn't
28:41
even bring it up. Yes, very much, so, very much so.
28:45
Because it's not a good deal. It really is. And I've talked
28:48
to a number of athletes that change that went to another school, but now
28:52
they want to go back to their homeschool. But you can go back,
28:56
you can't play, you're done, you know. So what did they what
29:00
did they get out of it? Nothing? Look at George Washington. I
29:03
think Rick Green, and I won't speak for the guy. I've talked with
29:06
him. I don't put words in anybody's mouth, but I know Rick Green
29:08
suffered through one of the toughest seasons he's ever had. Last year had a
29:14
wonderful team on paper, they never jailed, and they did not make it
29:17
to the state tournament. And you know, going in said wow, they're
29:21
the team to beat. Yeah, on paper, but they don't play games
29:23
on paper though they don't. And again I'm sure if Rick would be honest
29:26
with you, he'd say it was a tough, tough season for him.
29:30
So again I'm not a fan of it. I thought they should have left
29:33
it alone to begin with and then not to do anything with it. I
29:37
don't think. I don't think you'll see near as many transfers this year as
29:40
we did going into last year because a lot of them have seen well,
29:42
maybe the grass really wasn't all that green. On the other side, you
29:45
know, we'll stay here with my buddies and play and if we get beat,
29:48
we get beat. But at least you're getting beat with guys. You
29:51
know. It's another exciting two week period in high school sports tread with the
29:55
state softball term to get underway later this week. Little Creek Park the boys,
29:57
I guess next week omar to Ballpark. What are the stories to watch
30:02
for the girls this week? Well, I think in the girls again,
30:03
you've got a Cabin Middle and ball Club in Class triple A that is dynamite.
30:07
They're very very good. You got Saint Mary's ball Club in Class single
30:11
A. I think would be the certainly the odds on favorite going in and
30:14
when you look in Class double A, Herbert Hoover Man the Huskies, they
30:17
have been good for the last several years and they go in with the top
30:19
record of any team in Class double A. So I think those are the
30:22
three stories we'll watch and see if somebody like a university A Greenbriar East has
30:27
never been to the state softball tournament, Bluefield has never been to the state
30:32
softball tournament. They're there this year and looking for an upset. And of
30:36
course if you look at Greenbrier East right off the bat, they're going to
30:38
get a very tough team and university. It's not seeded like it is in
30:45
basketball. It's Region one plays Region three and Region two plays Region four or
30:48
whatever the regions are. They rotated every year, so you know going in
30:52
who you were going to play. So it just happens to be that cabol
30:56
Midland will not get a university or not get a Greenbrier easton first round,
31:00
they get a Washington team that is very good in its own right. We'll
31:03
talk about maybe I'll have you on next week to talk about the boys state
31:07
baseball tournament. But a look ahead anything that you're wide. I know the
31:11
field's not set yet, right, So they're just finished their sections and the
31:15
regions go on this week and the regionals. You know, it's going to
31:18
be interesting to see some of these teams. I think one of the best
31:22
regions in the state is going to be Williamstown and Wheeling Central. They've been
31:26
number one and number two in class singlely all season long, and I think
31:30
that's going to be a heck of a regional tournament. I'll get y'all next
31:32
week to talk about that. The good time to remind you though, that

36:09

36:15
yesterday afternoon, in a beautiful spring day in the Kanaal Valley that the West
36:17
Virginia Soccer Association's Open Cup was going on at the Shawnee Sports Complex when suddenly
36:22
shots rang out in an apartment complex and the two hundred block of Smooth Avenue
36:27
near the complex. Chief Deputy of the Canawa County Sheriff's Barbara Joe Crawford joined
36:30
us now to discuss it. Chief Crawford, good morning, Welcome to the
36:32
show. Good morning, Dave, thank you for having me. What happened
36:37
yesterday? Man, We're still trying to determine what the initial incident was over,
36:44
but we were able to so far to charge three individuals involved in the
36:50
incident. Of course, we're still continuing an investigation. But Antonio Jacobs of
36:54
Saint Albans was arrested. Caden Bowman of Dunbar and Ion Clark of Dunbar were
37:01
arrested and charged with one engagement in the reverency yesterday's incident. So we're still
37:07
continuing. Obviously, if there's information, anyone has information, we'll want that
37:13
information to contact us here at the Sheriff's Office so we can continue to further
37:17
the investigation. There was you know, it was in close proximity. It's
37:22
probably two blocks away from the sports complex where they did have ongoing events.
37:29
You know, we tried to make sure we took care of that situation as
37:32
well. We had units on the scene fairly quickly during the initial response.
37:38
So, I mean, there's no reason obviously this was and as you said,
37:43
Chief, this was close proximity to the Shawnee Sports Complex, but it
37:46
did not actually happen at the complex. It was like two blocks away,
37:50
right, Yeah, that's correct. It happened in an apartment complex in the
37:52
two hundred block of Smith, which is about two blocks from the answers to
37:57
the soccer complex. And I know that, as you said, sort the
38:00
investigation is continuing, but we don't have any idea at this point as to
38:04
exactly what led to this. Yeah, we're still looking into what initiated the
38:08
incident there. So we got investigators out as we speak, continuing to follow
38:14
up on that. So hopefully maybe we'll be able to have a better picture,
38:17
clark picture as to what initiated the incident there at the sports or the
38:22
housing complex there on Smooth Avenue, Yeah, which again was about two blocks
38:27
away from them, the sports complex. Talking to Joe Crawford, Chief Deputy
38:30
for the Kanaw County Sheriff's Department, and there was no I mean, in
38:34
a situation like this, it's kind of fluid, everything's happening quickly, Chief,
38:37
But the athletes, the fans, whatever, they were never really in
38:43
any danger at that point, right, No, but it was you could
38:45
hear the shots. I saw plenty of Yeah, we have plenty of video
38:50
to say, which you know, you really don't know where it's coming from
38:53
or what it's actually taking place. So I mean, we understand that,
38:58
but look that now this morning, you know, the patrons at the sports
39:04
complex were not obviously the target or in danger at that point, you know,
39:10
sitting through all that information. During the initial response, I do want
39:14
to say this, we had multi agency response. We had state police obviously
39:19
US the Sheriff's Department, South Charleston Police Apartment, Dunbar Police Department, and
39:22
Western State University was also notified and they were replaced on lockdown as well.
39:28
So all the protocols were pretty much engaged. Even though it was a weekend,
39:32
we were able to get that done. And I saw some of those
39:37
videos online last night posted by the parents of the kids plane and obviously,
39:42
as you can imagine, Panny consued many but many, and I don't know
39:45
whether you can speak to this or not, many seem to be upset that
39:47
they said that a lot of the gates were locked when they tried to get
39:52
out. Have you heard anything about that? Yeah, obviously that's something we're
39:57
going to look at with the staff there, uh to make sure. Obviously,
40:01
you know, we want to look at everything that that may be a
40:06
potential concern or an issue. So that's that's something we're looking at as well.
40:09
All right, well, Joe, I appreciate you being here man,
40:13
great job is always. Thanks a lot. And we've got three arrests now
40:15
is that what you said? Three arrests? Yes, three arrests now there,
40:19
and it is our possibility there could be more coming or potentially or additional
40:24
charges. Additional charges be additional charges as well. So all right, we're
40:28
looking at that in contact with the prosecutor's office. All right, Chief Deputy
40:32
Crawford, I appreciate you being here, man, thanks a lot. Thank
40:35
you, Dave. Have a good day you as well. Man. I
40:37
tell you what a scary incident. I mean happened about three o'clock yesterday afternoon,
40:40
just a beautiful day out of the Shawnee Sports Complex, and all of
40:43
a sudden, you just hear your gunshots. And at first, I mean
40:46
I saw that. I wasn't there, of course, but I saw the
40:49
video like everybody else did online, and you hear those and you think,
40:52
well, is that gunshots? And then you know, everybody just kind of
40:54
panics, which is understandable. But I think that this, if it is
40:59
indeed true, and they're looking at this situation right now, that apparently some
41:02
of the according to what I read, and I'm not trying to stir problems
41:07
here, but according to what I read, there were several outlets that seemed
41:09
to be locked, and there were a lot of parents that were upset about
41:15
that. So the investigation continues. We've got plenty of information available on it
41:21
at wv metronews dot com. The news team is working on it, and
41:24
I think I do believe Dave Wilson is going to be in for Hoppy this

46:12
of texts to get to here, Texas, Dave, did you see that
46:15
the West Virginia GOP adopted a brand new, completely rewritten platform at their state
46:20
meeting this weekend and has liberals going crazy, which makes us very proud of
46:24
it. I did not read the entire platform. I did see the argument
46:30
about it on x on, the artist formally known as Twitter. I'll try
46:35
to maybe get into that last couple of days. I just was scrolling yesterday
46:37
and I happen to see some arguments going back and forth on their Tony Hodge,
46:43
who is the vice chair of the state Republican Party, posted some of
46:45
it and somebody had responded to that. So I did not get into it
46:49
fully, but I will certainly. Tex says the rumors unmansion are heating up
46:54
big time. Lots of chatter about it. Text says on Craig Blair not
47:01
to see or not sad rather to see Blair go. But wonder at that
47:05
district shot itself in the foot by choosing a freshman representative over someone with influence.
47:10
As a texture, Texas dave, social issues had divided our communities.
47:15
This is what the GOP wants. Uh tex says, sorry that Hobby will
47:22
be gone again this week. He's the best. Indeed, he is,
47:24
That's why they called him the goat. Texas, mister Adams's correct tar is
47:30
going to have issues in Putnam. His judicial candidate got crushed, his selected
47:34
school board president is burning more bridges than building them, and he only shows
47:37
up during campaign season. He will get primaried. According to a texture Texas
47:43
says, the latest rumor is, in addition to Joe Manchion for governor,
47:45
is a real possibility that Shelley more Capito will retire while Jim Justice is still
47:51
the governor and Justice will appoint more Capito to fill the Senate seats. Tex
47:57
says Newsflash Day. Many within the West Virginia Republican Party loathe Patrick Morrison.
48:02
Tex says Eric Tarr will be the next Senate president. There's no other route
48:07
for anyone else to gain a majority, says a Texter. So as we
48:14
speak, canvassing from last week's election is going on at the voters registration building
48:19
the Canaw County government's Facebook page is actually streaming it. It's riveting, riveting,
48:23
I tell you, I say that song you can cheap because when I'm
48:27
during my days with the Secretary of State's office, I set through plenty of
48:30
canvassing. And let me tell you it watching with all due respect, it's
48:35
part of the process. But watching paint dry would probably be a pretty good
48:39
analogy. But again, it is a necessary part of the process. That's
48:43
now at some point after the canvas, if everything goes according to plan and
48:47
they stay on schedule, the Commission, which now consists of just Ben Selango
48:52
and Lance Wheeler, are scheduled to meet to begin the process of replacing Kent
48:57
Carper, who resigned last week on the Friday before the primary. Actually he'd
49:02
be last week in a couple of days, if you're listening to the show.
49:06
On Friday, I had commission President of Bensolango on and he says he's
49:09
eager to get it taken care of, and I'm sure that Commissioner Lance Wheeler
49:14
is as well. They will announce today in theory the deadline and all the
49:20
other particulars for filling that seat which is held by Commissioner Carper of course Commissioner
49:24
Carper got beat in the election, but he is still the county commissioner until
49:30
the new county commissioners are sworn in in January of next year, whether it
49:35
would be Chris Walters or Natalie Tenant. So Carper is still he's still the
49:40
county commissioner. Well, no, I mean, let me back up,
49:43
he's not the county commissioner. That seat somebody's going to fill that seat.
49:47
That's what I'm trying to say. We know it will be a Democrat appointed
49:52
and that that person must live in District one or in District four. Now,
49:57
so Lango represents District two and Wheeler is out of District three. So
50:04
if Selango and Wheeler cannot agree on who it should be, then the Kanawa
50:09
County Democratic Executive Committee will will step in. So what's gonna happen? Uh?
50:15
Selango and Wheeler seemingly get along great, but you know one is a
50:21
Democrat that's been Selango and one is Republican Lance Wheeler, So they could possibly
50:27
have different ideas as to whom it should be to fill that seat. And
50:32
if you go back to last week's last Wednesday's show, that at that time
50:37
I had on Democratic nominee Natalie Tenant on the show, and she said that
50:44
she love to be appointed in that position early. Of course, as I
50:47
said earlier, she has to face Republican Chris Walters in the November general election.
50:52
And some have said, no matter whether it's Natalie Tenant or whomever,
50:55
that if somebody is appointed, that it could give them a bit of an
51:00
advantage named recognition and things of that nature. I would say about Natalie Tenant,
51:02
she's already got the name recognition, no former Secretary of State, and
51:06
she's run for other offices. If I were to place a bet on it,
51:12
I would say that Selango probably would have no problem with putting Natalie Tennant
51:17
on the ballot early. But I'm told for what it's for what it's worth,
51:23
that Lance Wheeler probably won't go for that. So the Executive Committee may
51:29
indeed have to be involved. We shall see. Now. The actual meeting
51:32
to fill the vacancy will be on May thirtieth. Carrie Houdasak hasn't end up
51:37
story posted about it now at wv metronews dot com. In the meantime,
51:40
as far as it goes with Kent Carper, it's fully out there that there
51:45
will be no charges filed against Kent Carper, none from the Charleston p D
51:49
and none from the Feds. The FEDS got involved because of the email offering
51:54
a job to the girlfriend of the investigating officer that Carper allegedly sent after the
52:01
incident at Daniel Boone Park last May. Now I had a chance to catch
