- 0:33Hamster with a blunt. Pen knife for doing quicker,
- 0:35quicker. Welcome back to a hamster with a
- 0:39blunt pen Life. The The Doctor Who Commentary
- 0:44podcast. 7 hours. I've been waiting to do this
- 0:48commentary 7 hours. You know, position your men on
- 0:55the walkway. Mr. Sims Jenkins.
- 0:58See my comment? All I've got to say is that the
- 1:02only line that pops into my head is you're beginning to bore me.
- 1:04But that's not what's happening. I'm not born.
- 1:06I can. Understand Mortified.
- 1:12You know, it's a pity I've just composed a particularly nasty
- 1:16epitaph for him. Oh, that's a great line.
- 1:20See, she's great casting because those like man.
- 1:24Yeah, we haven't mentioned it, but I wonder what we could be
- 1:26talking about today. We are doing Part 3 of Earth
- 1:31Shock by Eric Saywood, directed by Peter Grimwade, music by oh,
- 1:36Malcolm Clark. He's he's crushing you.
- 1:38He's making it actually add to the story rather than to.
- 1:42Track It's so funny you should mention Malcolm Clark because I
- 1:45was going to ask you to do a little sing song with me before
- 1:47we go into the episode. What do you reckon?
- 1:50I reckon I will do bad, OK. Right.
- 1:53We'll do the March of the Sidemen, right?
- 1:54So I'll sort of start us off and then you jump in with me.
- 1:57All right, you ready? Done.
- 2:00Done, done, done. Yeah, keep going.
- 2:14Keep going, keep going. Yeah, I do that and you guys are
- 2:26on part. That's it.
- 2:28Now we do it. Great, isn't it?
- 2:31I love it. Yeah, I was surprised because
- 2:36the Mara Chess Club means I've had to do all the Davidson
- 2:39stories with a critical eye, which means paying attention to
- 2:42the music and being absolutely delighted and surprised that
- 2:46Malcolm Clarke will turn up here and in Resurrection and you.
- 2:51Say you've been paying attention to the music.
- 2:53Is that right? More than more than I usually
- 2:57do. Like who does the music, like
- 2:59all that kind of stuff. I know, Peter Hell does the
- 3:00theme and things like that, but it's the first time I've been
- 3:03like, all right, I've got to pay attention to direction, you
- 3:07know, like, I don't know, just put this proper podcast to kind
- 3:11of ear, ear to it, I guess, yeah.
- 3:14Well then it's a a good fortune then that you have landed in the
- 3:19latest quiz show named that Peter Davidson Instant or Music
- 3:23tune. I shall give you 5 snatches of
- 3:26music. OK?
- 3:28Your prize, if you win, is this fabulous Earth shock side man,
- 3:31which I'm brandishing, OK? Excellent.
- 3:34Excellent. OK.
- 3:35You ready? Yeah.
- 3:37See how much you've been paying attention now.
- 3:39It is for today's day. You're right.
- 3:49OK, what's this then? That's that is the fucking most
- 4:04uncool music to play while going for a cruise in a stolen car, by
- 4:07the way, like. OK, you ready for this?
- 4:12Ready. Bomb, Bomb.
- 4:14Bomb. Bomb.
- 4:15Bomb. Bomb.
- 4:16Bomb. Bomb.
- 4:18Bomb. Bomb do you reckon?
- 4:29I was thinking something like enlightenment or something.
- 4:32It's the party scenes. Yeah, there we.
- 4:36Go OK. Three out of five, I feel
- 4:38better. I've got more than half of them
- 4:39right now, so I feel I feel good.
- 4:41OK, two more. That's.
- 4:48Castrovelva. And it's Castrovelva.
- 4:51Oh my God. You're so good.
- 4:53At this OK. That's a large lamb shit.
- 5:06Really, it is. What is that arc of Infinity?
- 5:11It is when they're chasing around the streets now. 5 out of
- 5:16five. Oh no, now I've got to send you
- 5:18my side man. God damn it.
- 5:20That's all right. Better.
- 5:22Look, I will also say that there are parts of the era that have
- 5:28like musically that have stayed in my soul.
- 5:29Like all of the fight, all of it, the Five Doctors and boom,
- 5:33boom, boom, boom, boom. Your bonus 1.
- 5:37You ready for your bonus question?
- 5:39All right, I love this bit of music.
- 5:48Yeah, I have this. Yes, that's cool.
- 5:53It's pan pipe, isn't it? Yeah, that's great.
- 5:56That's I think that's Peter Howe.
- 5:58I think. Send your letters.
- 6:01I got the. I got the, I got the episode
- 6:02right, at least, yeah. You sort of made the episode 3.
- 6:05It was like, you know what, we're being so self indulgent,
- 6:12we go and watch. Because just let me do the.
- 6:21And isn't that the best score of the 80s come?
- 6:32On. Oh, maybe the two doctors.
- 6:35I do love that. One I do the some Taran themies.
- 6:42That's great as well. Yeah, well, if anyone is still
- 6:49listening, we're about to start episode 3 of our show.
- 6:55Luke, would you care to count us in?
- 6:57Yes, I will. OK, 1-2 now.
- 7:00All right, 321-GO. Off we go.
- 7:08Oh my. Can you think of anything more
- 7:10joyful student just singing Doctor Who Instant or music with
- 7:12a friend? I mean, it's just absolutely
- 7:14wonderful. Well, see, you're the first Test
- 7:17I've ever had, and you make me feel good about an upcoming
- 7:21episode I have about the music of the era.
- 7:25Now that I I can get a six out of five right it it makes me
- 7:30feel pretty good. Oh, you got 6 out of 6 right?
- 7:32You got Frontiers right as well. Yeah, it was a bonus question.
- 7:36I did say 6 out of five. It was 5 official, one bonus.
- 7:39Yeah. Oh.
- 7:40You just say 6 out of five. That's right.
- 7:44Oh, why won't they show themselves?
- 7:46Oh. By the way, there'll be a scene,
- 7:49I think it's in episode 3 with Adric.
- 7:53Like I like how they liked they wanted to make him this kind of
- 7:56artful Dodger who could sneakily do shit.
- 7:59Guy couldn't even sneakily take his badge off without some nerd
- 8:03watching him. So I feel like everything that
- 8:07Adric's character was supposed to be is Turlo, and Mark
- 8:12Strickson absolutely crushes it. Tell Mark Stricken's only got to
- 8:17look over his shouldering resurrection on a dark and he
- 8:19looks shifty. But you know, like Mark Stricken
- 8:23didn't come on set to meet his heroes and get shit on so.
- 8:26I mean, props to Adric, though, for realizing how these stories
- 8:31sort of go. He just went, oh, look, let's
- 8:33get out of here before we're caught and blamed, all right?
- 8:35Yeah, he knows. This is how it usually goes.
- 8:39Yes, on this ship we execute murderers.
- 8:43If I was to see that guy and anything else, I would still
- 8:47like expect him to be a traitor and a whinger.
- 8:50It's like the dude in Revenge of the Cybermen who's in the first
- 8:53episode of like Blake 7. Like I know him for those two
- 8:56roles and now I know he's a piece of shit for life.
- 8:59Like there's nothing. Bricks apprehended.
- 9:03Why can't you say court is so melodramatic?
- 9:09Reading that bloody thesaurus. You've done well, Luke.
- 9:12You get extra bonus. She is wonderful.
- 9:19Like I. No, it's not the sort of actor
- 9:22that should be in that role. Who cares?
- 9:25She's growing. She crushes it as this kind of
- 9:29bored slash bitchy boss who only cares about getting that fat
- 9:32paycheck at the end. I mean, you would think the
- 9:34cyber leader would be a boring role, but David Banks goes hold
- 9:38my beer. You know he must be married to
- 9:41suffer for our past defeats, he goes.
- 9:45That's right. That Cyberman, that Cyberman in
- 9:49particular, definitely went to the class where they taught you
- 9:53about how dangerous the Doctor is.
- 9:55Can I can I say something complimentary about Nista
- 9:58because she don't get much to do in this, but the few lines that
- 10:01she gets right, I think she does a melodramatic end of scene line
- 10:04really well. Later on she goes, I want things
- 10:07to settle down before we go out. She goes at one point and in
- 10:12episode 1 she said, oh, is it episode 2?
- 10:14She went, Oh my God, they're fighting back or something like
- 10:19that. Like she could deliver a lie in
- 10:20Sarah Sun. Yeah.
- 10:23Now I'd say I recently really since from our just circular
- 10:29time and that one really shows off some of the acting shops
- 10:33that that that she has maybe a part of it's because she's older
- 10:36at the time. They did.
- 10:37They didn't explore. Yeah, the the the romance
- 10:41episode is incredibly good, isn't it?
- 10:43It holds up and. Then we did spare, pause and
- 10:46look at the drama she brought to her.
- 10:50So and. I recently listened to Creatures
- 10:53of Beauty as well and she's unforgettably good in that one.
- 10:58She's insanely good and, and, and when when she's given things
- 11:02like a romance or something like that, which no offense to her,
- 11:06but like if it went wrong, like like it would have, yeah, I
- 11:12don't know, they might not have given her as maybe stuff to do
- 11:15after that or something. But she's listened to the
- 11:18challenge on audio. She's fantastic.
- 11:20Flirting with Sasha Dewan in Ghost walk.
- 11:23Oh, I do all that. Cliffhanger in the.
- 11:26Peterloo smooth vicar voice talking to Nyssa and flirting.
- 11:30I'm like he's smooth on audio by the way he's.
- 11:34Do you remember that? That cliffhanger in the Peterloo
- 11:36Massacre where the woman dies? Oh, my God.
- 11:40Barrel Reed, A bomb from Earth, controlled from this ship, she
- 11:45goes. You've caused me a great deal of
- 11:50trouble. Her collar is like an owl.
- 11:53It's like a Centauri haircut. It's.
- 11:55I've made a point. Five, look at that thing.
- 11:59Think of Peter Jurassic. She's having that collar on her.
- 12:02To get it as high as it is. Oh, dude.
- 12:05And what do you do to kind of get that kind of curl out of it?
- 12:08It's, it's like, it's like a collar's been permed.
- 12:11Oh, the the blissful moment of direction in a minute right when
- 12:15he goes, oh, how many solos have you got?
- 12:17Well, 5000 or and the camera zooms in and she goes no, it's
- 12:22impossible. Oh my God.
- 12:26Look, I know it's an effect of like tripling up, you know, for
- 12:30that cliffhanger. It's like it's the same shot 3
- 12:33times. I don't care.
- 12:33I know what they're going for. I buy it.
- 12:35Hey, it's a halabi, Luke. All right, It's a Halabi.
- 12:39How many Dalek stories have I? Have I accepted like we've got a
- 12:43Dalek army, we're going to destroy everyone.
- 12:45How many Daleks is there? Three.
- 12:47No, it's fine. And nobody like they give the
- 12:51Cyberman shock line to Davidson, Baker and McCoy.
- 12:58Baker gets it down in the sewers in Attack of the Cybermen.
- 13:00McCoy gets it at the end of episode 1 in Silver Nemesis.
- 13:03Silver Nemesis. No one tops when Davidson goes.
- 13:08Cyberman, it's just fab. I'm glad you said that because
- 13:14my Devo bias is definitely going to make there's some cyber butts
- 13:18for you. I mean, recently I did a Moldrin
- 13:21Undead commentary and I I do think he's a little bored
- 13:26towards the end of that story so I can be critical of him.
- 13:30But he wanted to work with William Russell.
- 13:32And his best is great. Oh God she goes.
- 13:38We must have come out of Warp Dr. and apparently then off she
- 13:41went. Is that off of Star Ave. or some
- 13:45terrible? Avenue Oh my goodness.
- 13:49She's definitely one of those actresses that like book that if
- 13:53she was in a big finish, she would be like, I didn't
- 13:56understand any of this, but they did my job, did lunch, was
- 14:00great. She's vicious, though.
- 14:02I shall lose. She doesn't want.
- 14:03To pay a heavy fine. Fine, yes.
- 14:06He wants a bonus. Fine means less money.
- 14:09This. Makes sense.
- 14:11He goes, whoever was on that is on this ship.
- 14:15Like he really is so serious about it.
- 14:18God, he's good. And then Adric comes in.
- 14:21You must listen to the doctor. Oh, shut up, Adric.
- 14:25Yeah, so there's a really good audio iterations of I that kind
- 14:28of where some guy takes Adric prisoner because he's so good at
- 14:32maths, he's going to take him hostage to mess with the stock
- 14:36market and shit. I would have like had Adric here
- 14:39do some things like, oh, show us all your accounts and stuff.
- 14:43Oh, well, if I do it like this, you're a trillionaire now.
- 14:47Can we look at the things now, please?
- 14:49That's that's, you know, but, you know, math nerds on the
- 14:53show, we've had at least two of them by this point.
- 14:56And the other one being what, Zoe?
- 14:58What they do with Angie in an aquaphobia, isn't it?
- 15:00She figures out the whole war just by looking at the accounts.
- 15:05Oh, she's a genius. Yeah, but then of course the
- 15:07writing was a bit better. The money.
- 15:08Johnny Morris, come on now. Yeah, Yeah.
- 15:12Although what I really like about is it.
- 15:14Johnny Morris in this era, though.
- 15:17Yeah, I'm not sure it's Eric Saywood.
- 15:19Johnny Morris is a smart writer, I think.
- 15:24I think Eric Saywood is like the Nicholas Briggs of this era.
- 15:27Nicholas Briggs at his best delivers propulsive aliens esque
- 15:33action. You know they are.
- 15:37They are what? I like how they're using kind of
- 15:39some kind of Mondrian esque looking diagrammed with squares
- 15:42on it to show power loss. That's that's kind of nice with
- 15:45the yellow and red. Here's that shot.
- 15:47Look, you can see the Cox going in Davison's head as he's
- 15:51playing with his fingers. Because he knows he has to stay
- 15:54still, but his doctor doesn't stay still.
- 15:56It's like that ADHD kind of fidgetiness about him that I'm
- 16:00also drawn to because I have, I can have, I have that anyone
- 16:04who's recorded with me has seen me play with my friend a lot.
- 16:11I like it when a sentence gets away with you and you just let
- 16:14it run. Like I'm like, no, he's getting
- 16:16somewhere. Oh, there he is.
- 16:21I got, I got a point like, I don't know how my brain works,
- 16:24dude. Sometimes the whole idea comes
- 16:26out at once and then I've got to kind of catch up to it before I
- 16:29forget. I in episode 3, I think what's
- 16:33really clever is the escalation of tension is Carnival World.
- 16:38Yeah, we haven't actually. We've seen them sort of figuring
- 16:40out that the side men are on board.
- 16:43We then see them figure out that they're hiding in the silos and
- 16:47then we realise how many silos there are.
- 16:49So there's an escalation of suspense, but it's all dialogue.
- 16:54And you think, well, OK, it's only going to be dialogue until
- 16:57they suddenly burst out the silos in incredible sequences
- 17:01and it really builds to a big crescendo.
- 17:04It is this is a this is a really cool tension builder.
- 17:09It's Part 3. Usually you kind of.
- 17:12Oh, I can hear the March of the sight, man right now.
- 17:15Oh my God, I can really see their cocks.
- 17:18Luke, I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry.
- 17:24I still can't watch invisible enemy the same way.
- 17:28That's a clever shot as well. Look at that.
- 17:29You see the silos where they've got them sort of going up out of
- 17:32short, so it looks like they're enormous.
- 17:35Oh, please. Now we're shooting them from the
- 17:37other side. They made the bubbles.
- 17:45Oh, look at this. Now we're is this the zoom in on
- 17:47barrel or the zoom in on Peter Ice?
- 17:50Peter, isn't it? Yeah.
- 17:53This is what I mean about capturing the drama at the
- 17:55moment. Give him a big close up.
- 17:59Not quite yet. Zoom in Part 1, Zoom in Part 2.
- 18:03There it is. Oh amazing.
- 18:06And the angle is kind of like looking up at his face as well.
- 18:09The camera is like right under his nugget.
- 18:12And like that design, that sort of military Marine design,
- 18:18Cyberman, it was such a savvy move.
- 18:20They look so ridiculous in prevention Cybermen.
- 18:24And now they're streamlined. They've got all that tubing in
- 18:27that sort of lever that they wear.
- 18:30What the fuck's happening in that chess piece?
- 18:32We don't know, but it's cool. You can see the jaw.
- 18:35It's a brilliant redesign. It's redesigned so good that
- 18:41they keep it for the rest of Doctor Who in in this era.
- 18:45The only time I don't think it works is Silver Nemesis where
- 18:48they make them really sort of shiny.
- 18:54Yeah, no. I mean, I love Silver Nemesis
- 18:57for other reasons, but yeah. I love that scene where they're
- 19:00in the the car with that Hollywood lady of the dog
- 19:03that's. Oh, you were about to, as we're
- 19:06not going to hear it because we haven't got the sound of it.
- 19:08You're about to see the best line reading of the entire story
- 19:11where Barrel Reed goes, you traitor, she goes.
- 19:21It fits other MOS for Cybermen's stories as well to have a man on
- 19:26the inside. Sometimes that man on the inside
- 19:28is a big character like a Vaughan, or sometimes it's a
- 19:32kind of really smaller side character until the Cybermen are
- 19:34ready, like this guy in the Ringway and the dude from like 7
- 19:41slash Revenge. The enemy's outside, Luke.
- 19:45You're pointing your gun in the wrong direction.
- 19:50I'm going to betray my whole species because this old lady
- 19:53bullies me. That's right.
- 19:55Yeah. He's betrayed his entire race
- 19:57just because he's a beaten down little gay boy.
- 20:00Oh, bless him. Oh, Ringway.
- 20:04I mean they. Just keep.
- 20:06Coming besides me, don't they? They cut through every single
- 20:09person, leave a wake of corpses, and then they just keep coming.
- 20:14See, this is something that this is a simple thing that isn't in
- 20:17Warriors because I look, I love a lot of that.
- 20:21Some of it because it's trash, some of it because I genuinely
- 20:24like it. But there's no cover.
- 20:27Like they're just standing there in the in the sea.
- 20:30Devil standing in a line waiting to the shop.
- 20:33Every step of the way in this story, the Cybermen are cutting
- 20:36down the the the human resistance.
- 20:39But every step of the way there's there's obstructions,
- 20:42there's things have got to walk around and move and get around
- 20:45and I. Was just a better director
- 20:46though, like a director thinking about the action.
- 20:50I mean, I know Pennant he he had less time to work with Warriors
- 20:54of the day. Like it was rushed forward.
- 20:56Wasn't it a week or something like that?
- 20:58It lost a bit of time, yeah. I, I don't know, like, you know,
- 21:02Fiona Cumming lost time for enlightenment and look how that
- 21:05turned out. Yeah, that's magic.
- 21:10So yeah, I, I do like that we get a bit of the Doctor
- 21:15mentioning, see when it's done like this in an era or a time
- 21:19where it's not easily accessible to get all these stories that
- 21:25you want to see bits of. I'm kind of glad that Peter
- 21:28Davidson is just like the Cybermen are from Bondas.
- 21:31I I even froze their tombs up on Tellos and I'm like, whoa,
- 21:35that's cool. I'd already seen Tomb by Simon,
- 21:37but then that's a Tomb Cybermen reference.
- 21:39Wow, what's Mondas? OK.
- 21:43That was a great bit of direction there as well, where
- 21:46he was bending down by Ridgeway. You could see the shadow of the
- 21:50sidemen by the other door and then he just screams burger and
- 21:54the the door just slams down. It's a great shock moment.
- 21:59What I love and it is coming up is that they'll do a carbonite,
- 22:05carbonite, not carbonite. That's Star Trek carbonite, Han
- 22:09Solo kind of effect with a Cyberman and I and and I think
- 22:15that's like, you know, if ever they thought, oh, we're on a
- 22:19budget, we can't do anything like Star Wars.
- 22:22I'm like, all right, sure, Lucas money maybe maybe would have
- 22:26made that look better, but that looks great on no budget.
- 22:29Come on, I love that shot. I've always loved it.
- 22:32Don't give me my did. You see that that camera came
- 22:35along that corridor with them up the stairs, up the stairs, felt
- 22:39huge. And look at this shot.
- 22:42He just knows. He knows how to get the best out
- 22:44of every single set, doesn't he? He may have gone around, you
- 22:49know, with his hands in a little square, you know, annoying all
- 22:52the actors trying to get the best shots, but it was worth it.
- 22:57Well, it's the one that the ones that let them all have a guy on
- 23:00time that be like, oh, who who's directed that?
- 23:03Oh, pendant rabbits. OK, Yeah.
- 23:05Did you see the bit where Beryl Reed karate chopped Mr. Ringway?
- 23:09That was great. How many things did she make
- 23:14when she get to karate? Chopped people?
- 23:16She probably loved it. Come on.
- 23:18It's as well like. Here it is.
- 23:21Gas bag in here. How do I say this nicely?
- 23:24Doctor Who isn't sort of very cool, right?
- 23:26It's it's a science fiction show and it is very often quite camp.
- 23:32Yeah. And I don't think you get like,
- 23:34really sort of. Oh, that's such a cool image.
- 23:36There's just loads of framing shots of loads of soldiers in
- 23:39here. There was a wonderful shot there
- 23:40of Tegan and Scott with the soldiers behind in the half dark
- 23:44with their guns. And you're like, that's fucking
- 23:46cool. That looks vocal, but if you
- 23:49just turn this on, you'd be like, what's this?
- 23:51I want to watch some more. I like this Lance thing, it
- 23:55reminds me of what they use for Babe in the Butcher uses, but it
- 23:58also reminds me of that bomb gun thing they'll use in the Five
- 24:01Doctors as well. Babe, she called me babe, you
- 24:04know, did you say a trick? They're going.
- 24:09Oh my God, it's getting so hot. It's terrible, bless him.
- 24:17I mean what is great though is obviously they use his badge,
- 24:21they use his maths and then he is the one that he does nearly
- 24:26save the. Day.
- 24:27In episode 3 it's only the fact that fucking sideman comes along
- 24:31and he has the precognition about the the console that's
- 24:37about to blow up because Matthew has clearly knows that's about
- 24:40to explode. You're right.
- 24:46Yeah, you're right. He does.
- 24:50Can we come again? No, we can't blow it up again.
- 24:52It'll do. No, we wasted a lot of money
- 24:56doing cool shit with the Cybermen.
- 24:57That's all you get. This as well, this fast dialogue
- 25:00where he's going. Will you explain to me what's
- 25:02going on, Adric? There's no time.
- 25:03We'll just explain it quickly and then it's back and forth,
- 25:06back and forth. This is how the 5th Doctor on
- 25:09Adric should have been throughout their entire run I
- 25:11think. Not all of this sort of bitching
- 25:14at each other and Adric betraying him every 5 minutes.
- 25:17I think they. Could they should be nerd best
- 25:19friends? Like him and Tom were.
- 25:22Him and Tom were like gangbusters.
- 25:26Like they, they, I guess they wanted this young kind of
- 25:29argumentative thing. But I could easily see this
- 25:33Doctor in him in one of the TARDIS kind of rooms kind of
- 25:38with the, you know, a whiteboard or chalkboard with mathematical
- 25:41equations all on it. And you can just have a quick
- 25:45scene of Adric going on. And you've got to change this
- 25:48here to A2. And then boom, now we can walk
- 25:51off to see what Tegan's bitching about before the tire just
- 25:53shakes again or something. You got that?
- 25:58Tegan blows up the side of man, I always.
- 26:02Describe it as her sliding across the floor to kill the
- 26:05side of man but. Oh look at this side.
- 26:08Man's bleeding green blood. It's more like coolant, isn't
- 26:12it? I mean, look at that.
- 26:14That's such a cool shot. Again, of all the soldiers.
- 26:16The smoke inside, man, it was dragging him away.
- 26:20So great. I don't know, like, I don't
- 26:24really get to say. Doctor Who looks cool.
- 26:26I'm enjoying it. Oh, this is right here.
- 26:28Look at that. Stuck in the wall and the way
- 26:31the camera sort of zoomed out from it as well, it does
- 26:34actually make it feel much more dynamic than it actually is.
- 26:38Yeah. He's worth his weight in gold.
- 26:40Grim way, I'll tell you. It's how it's shot, it's how
- 26:42it's done. Just it's like it just looks so
- 26:44cool. And the doctor did that.
- 26:47See. So like this Doctor Who doesn't
- 26:49use it. Oh.
- 26:50My God. He's clenched.
- 26:52Cyber clenched. And then he goes, Was it blow
- 26:57the doors? Now, the only unfortunate thing
- 27:01about that is it's clearly balsa wood, but never mind.
- 27:04Oh yeah, now look, they achieved the Han Solo carbonite thing
- 27:09with balsa wood, and I'm going to accept this as well.
- 27:13Do you remember I said to you in Episode 1, there was that
- 27:16incredible shot where the camera was coming through The Cave,
- 27:19through the smoke, and it was just a such a beautifully framed
- 27:22bit of direction. There's another one in a minute,
- 27:25right, where Scott and Tegan and that are going through the
- 27:27corridors and suddenly it's a long shot and all the Cybermen
- 27:31are coming in. It is so perfectly executed.
- 27:35That's what I think. That's what Greenway could have
- 27:37done. If he'd have had a million more
- 27:40and and loads more time. Every shot would have been
- 27:43crafted like that. Here's another one that had a
- 27:46falling out with like J&T, didn't he?
- 27:48Yeah. Bloody taking people out to
- 27:50lunch. J&T.
- 27:52He was a bit weak socially sometimes, wasn't he?
- 27:55I think I think Brimwade got, at least as a writer for me
- 28:00personally got better as he kept going.
- 28:03I think he's weakest this time. Flight Mordron is better and
- 28:07planet it's my. Favorite.
- 28:09Oh Mr. Ridgeway. Oh, dead.
- 28:13Oh, do you like the light as well?
- 28:14What is it? We mute again.
- 28:17And the and The thing is, he didn't deceive them.
- 28:20It was only because the doctor brought the extra soldiers on
- 28:23board that they thought, oh, they've lied about the numbers.
- 28:26And Seminole. Absolutely Seminole 5th Doctor
- 28:29scenes coming up now. The small unfortunate events are
- 28:32what life is all about. The sequence where the Cyber
- 28:35leader threatens to kill Tegan. These are some of the very best
- 28:395th Doctor moments I think. Well, it's his way of doing
- 28:42that. You know, that kind of fear
- 28:45emotions thing that Hartnell does in 10th Planet.
- 28:50But bit more of a kind of a Davos spin.
- 28:53He's such a ham, the cyber leader, he goes, and so is
- 28:56destruction, which is exactly what we're going to do to that
- 29:00planet. Everything I hear about David
- 29:02Banks makes it sound like he's a gigantic teddy bear as well, so
- 29:06like, I've got a lot of time for.
- 29:07Those oh look bursting out of the silos.
- 29:09Here they come. You know a dude loves their role
- 29:14when they don't just play Cybermen.
- 29:17And the leader of the Cybermen, here we go.
- 29:20There's a fucking whole tape series and a whole and a book on
- 29:23cyber history that he made himself.
- 29:26This is that shot. Look at this shot.
- 29:28It is just perfectly. Of Tegan there, yeah.
- 29:32Everyone comes in at the right time, everyone scatters, the
- 29:35there's a crane that goes up. Yeah.
- 29:39Gorgeous and then look more and. You got kind of like shades of
- 29:44tumor Cybermen there with the. More bombs.
- 29:48I mean, this can't get any better Moon boots as well.
- 29:52I mean, come on. There's a bloody shoe shop that
- 29:55sold the fuck down the moon boots that week.
- 29:59And. You got the the high shots, you
- 30:03got the low shots, you've got the long shadows.
- 30:06You've got the bum shots, you've got everything.
- 30:10Oh my God. The doctor looks very panicked.
- 30:12And look, how are they? I mean right towards us.
- 30:15That cliffhanger is awesome, I love it.
- 30:18Well, not the fact that they're coming straight at the audience
- 30:21as well, you know? It's got to feel to me of like
- 30:24that kind of Daleks conquer and destroy ending, even though, you
- 30:27know, it's like 3 Daleks going around and around in friggin
- 30:30circles just the way they do it. Alex.
- 30:32Conquer and destroy, yeah. You know what that is?
- 30:34That's the rarest of things. You know, that's a fucking
- 30:37awesome episode 3. And usually that's just the
- 30:40runaround in it before the climax or the escape capture.
- 30:45Yeah, I can think of a like I think Frantios also has a pretty
- 30:48good episode 3 as well, because it's still unfolding.
- 30:51It's it's it's mystery and that. Wonderful and cliffhanger where
- 30:55the mining machine comes in. Oh, it's just a review his head.
- 30:59Yeah, yeah, look, the cameraman, his name just went past dude.
- 31:05I hope he went on to do some awesome stuff, IE more Doctor
- 31:08Who. That's what I mean.
- 31:13It's even rarer, I think, in that I think episode 1 was
- 31:18suspendful, episode 2 kept things moving, Episode 3 was
- 31:21better, and I think episode 4 is the best episode of all.
- 31:25Yeah, it is. It's very rare.
- 31:27I think Andrazani is another one.
- 31:29It's very rare to have a story where sequentially, every single
- 31:33episode gets better than the last.
- 31:36Yeah, no, it just it's just plumps.
- 31:42It's got the the fast, the fast pace and attention.
- 31:45Yeah, you, you are right. It's more word peril than world
- 31:48building, but the peril, the word peril does go somewhere.
- 31:54It builds to these Cybermen bursting out all these things
- 31:57and coming out in force and all this kind of stuff.
- 32:01And it's almost is what this might be.
- 32:06No, this is like the first I guess Davison base under siege
- 32:09story, I guess essentially, at least in the in the second-half.
- 32:13There's so much Doctor Who it it can get the world building right
- 32:17because it can build worlds with words.
- 32:19Yeah, but it doesn't really get the moment right because the
- 32:24reasons we've already talked about time, money, sometimes the
- 32:27competence of the director. This is just getting all the
- 32:30moments right, Right. It's getting so yours just so
- 32:34it's like live action. Do you know what I mean?
- 32:36You're there in it. The stars have aligned.
- 32:40Sorry, there's an election on and we need this space for the
- 32:42next two weeks. Then two weeks later, most of
- 32:46the stars have aligned. I guess we've got to go with
- 32:49this. Let's go.
- 32:50Yeah, we're still Pennant Roberts.
- 32:51They were going to be great even if we had an extra week.
- 32:56Dude, they had the extra time and they still come up with the
- 32:58merka? Come on, you.
- 33:02Know all out on a line about the merka.
