- 0:23Speaker 1: five Minute Friday. If you're new to the segment, I
- 0:26Speaker 1: share a little story for you, I offer up a
- 0:30Speaker 1: prompt to take you into the weekend, and then I
- 0:33Speaker 1: bring you my content picks, my highlights, some things that
- 0:37Speaker 1: I am digging to share with you this week. I
- 0:40Speaker 1: find it really important oftentimes I correlate between the newsletter
- 0:44Speaker 1: and what I'm sharing here on the podcast feed. If
- 0:47Speaker 1: you have yet to subscribe to the Weekly Hurdle, I
- 0:50Speaker 1: highly encourage you to do so. The link to do
- 0:52Speaker 1: that is in the show notes. But this week in
- 0:55Speaker 1: the newsletter, many of you have been asking for it,
- 0:57Speaker 1: I am offering up some of my favorite cold weather
- 1:01Speaker 1: gear picks, everything from gloves to leggings to long sleeves.
- 1:05Speaker 1: So if you're in the market for any of that,
- 1:07Speaker 1: I have got your back. Make sure again that you subscribe. Anyway. Wow,
- 1:14Speaker 1: what a week. It's so interesting recording content and working
- 1:18Speaker 1: on content, not knowing exactly what's going to be going
- 1:21Speaker 1: on in the news cycle when you release it. You know,
- 1:24Speaker 1: I'm recording this on Thursday afternoon to bring you on
- 1:29Speaker 1: Friday morning, and I still don't know what could happen
- 1:32Speaker 1: in our country between Thursday and Friday morning. There's just
- 1:35Speaker 1: a lot going on. I know that a lot of
- 1:38Speaker 1: us are anxious with all of the uncertainty that's going
- 1:42Speaker 1: on between the election. I know here in New York
- 1:45Speaker 1: City there have been protests, all of them, to my knowledge,
- 1:48Speaker 1: have been peaceful. There are stores boarded up. I mean,
- 1:51Speaker 1: there's just a lot of unrest right now. So if
- 1:54Speaker 1: you are feeling anxious, I'm sure that you know this,
- 1:57Speaker 1: but you are certainly certainly not a As I was
- 2:01Speaker 1: feeling really anxious earlier this morning, I was looking back
- 2:05Speaker 1: at my journal to reflect on sometimes that brought me
- 2:12Speaker 1: joy this year. There have been a lot of them.
- 2:15Speaker 1: I think that it's easy to reflect on twenty twenty
- 2:20Speaker 1: and think about all of the hard and bad stuff
- 2:24Speaker 1: that's been going on. But I also recognize that this
- 2:29Speaker 1: year has had a lot of positives and has brought
- 2:33Speaker 1: with it a ton of growth. So I mentioned the journal.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I looked at my journal, and in there I was
- 2:43Speaker 1: reading back to a trip that I took over the
- 2:48Speaker 1: summer to spend about a week with my best friend
- 2:51Speaker 1: up outside of Providence. She lives up there with her
- 2:54Speaker 1: husband and her baby, and literally, if we weren't in
- 2:58Speaker 1: the middle of a pandemic, I highly highly doubt that
- 3:02Speaker 1: we would have found this time to spend together. Now,
- 3:06Speaker 1: of course, we did all the things. We made sure
- 3:09Speaker 1: to get tested. I rented my own car so I
- 3:12Speaker 1: didn't have to take public transportation. I took every precaution
- 3:16Speaker 1: that I could take to make this week as stress
- 3:19Speaker 1: free as possible, And in my journal at the end
- 3:23Speaker 1: of that week, I just was so thankful and content,
- 3:31Speaker 1: like truly content and satisfied that I had this chance
- 3:36Speaker 1: to just a escape the city and b feel so
- 3:43Speaker 1: care free for seven full days as someone that had
- 3:48Speaker 1: been spending so much time by herself in her apartment,
- 3:53Speaker 1: to be surrounded not just by other people, but people
- 3:57Speaker 1: that made me feel so welcome, was just there are
- 4:02Speaker 1: It's hard for me to articulate how awesome it was.
- 4:06Speaker 1: I remember one day in particular, and I wrote about this,
- 4:09Speaker 1: this perfect afternoon where we blew up a kiddie pool
- 4:13Speaker 1: in her sideyard and drank wolfer rose that we stashed
- 4:17Speaker 1: in an aquamarine colored YETI cooler, and the sun was
- 4:23Speaker 1: out in full force, and we were just out there
- 4:25Speaker 1: and sweating and her baby was like in this thing
- 4:29Speaker 1: that babies jump and dance in and it's safe, and
- 4:34Speaker 1: oh man, it was the simplest, simplest thing that made
- 4:40Speaker 1: me so so happy. I think, really, when it comes
- 4:45Speaker 1: to for a moment like taking a deep breath and
- 4:48Speaker 1: thinking about the things that were grateful for amidst all
- 4:50Speaker 1: of this chaos. Really, for me, twenty twenty has been
- 4:54Speaker 1: just such a lesson in appreciating the small things. It
- 4:58Speaker 1: doesn't need to be so big trip to Italy or
- 5:02Speaker 1: Hawaii or Hobiza. It doesn't need to be some lavish
- 5:06Speaker 1: dinner with hundreds of dollars spent or something extravagant. You
- 5:11Speaker 1: can find so much joy from the smallest things. So
- 5:15Speaker 1: I guess I tell you the story really to encourage
- 5:19Speaker 1: you to look for some small joy. It doesn't need
- 5:22Speaker 1: to be anything big. In fact, it could just be
- 5:24Speaker 1: something as simple as noticing that when you wake up
- 5:27Speaker 1: these days it's six point forty. It's nice that it's
- 5:29Speaker 1: a little bit lighter than it was last week, and
- 5:32Speaker 1: that's good. The smallest things, again, can bring you joy.
- 5:36Speaker 1: And so my question, my prompt for you this week
- 5:40Speaker 1: is what's a small thing that makes you smile? What's
- 5:44Speaker 1: one small thing that can give you joy today, this weekend,
- 5:49Speaker 1: regardless of what's going on in our world. Highlights of
- 5:53Speaker 1: the week Links to all this stuff can be found
- 5:56Speaker 1: in the show notes. I read a story oh Ohio
- 6:00Speaker 1: father runs full marathon around hospital treating his four year
- 6:03Speaker 1: old son for cancer. The title really says it all.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Is there anything more necessary than a feel good story
- 6:10Speaker 1: right now? I think not. One. Dad ran literally a
- 6:16Speaker 1: marathon around Akron Children's Hospital. His four year old son
- 6:19Speaker 1: is battling be sell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and he raised
- 6:24Speaker 1: in the process sixteen thousand dollars for the hospital treating
- 6:29Speaker 1: his son. In the people interview that I read, he said,
- 6:31Speaker 1: I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate the
- 6:33Speaker 1: hospital and celebrate the amazing caregivers inside of there. It's
- 6:37Speaker 1: been an amazing experience, and the outpouring of support shows
- 6:40Speaker 1: how much Akron Children's has meant to many different families. Ugh,
- 6:47Speaker 1: my heart. Another highlight for you listen What a Day podcast.
- 6:51Speaker 1: I have a few different news podcasts in my regular rotation,
- 6:54Speaker 1: but I recently discovered this podcast when a friend posted
- 6:58Speaker 1: it on Instagram last week. I really really dig it.
- 7:01Speaker 1: It's with two individuals, Aquila Hues and Gideon Resnick, and
- 7:06Speaker 1: it's a good combination of like super informative in a
- 7:09Speaker 1: way that's really digestible and also with a hint of
- 7:12Speaker 1: humor that I can really really appreciate. A gift for
- 7:16Speaker 1: your radar, the Nice Plants. I'm in the middle of
- 7:19Speaker 1: doing research for gift guides, which you guys know what
- 7:23Speaker 1: gift guides are, but basically as a part of my
- 7:26Speaker 1: freelance writing, I help the outlets that I work with
- 7:29Speaker 1: create gift guide content, and so I am reaching out
- 7:32Speaker 1: to different companies and doing some research about what brands
- 7:35Speaker 1: have coming down the pipe. And one of the items
- 7:39Speaker 1: that I have stumbled upon is called the Nice Plant.
- 7:42Speaker 1: It's basically like a super adorable self care box that
- 7:46Speaker 1: includes a potted succulent in a ceramic pot, like a
- 7:50Speaker 1: cute small succulent, a sage smudge stick, Palo Santo. I
- 7:55Speaker 1: think that's how you say Palo Santo, Palo Santo, a
- 7:58Speaker 1: floral room, and lit bomb. And it's just like the
- 8:01Speaker 1: cutest little arrangement of things that bring me so much joy.
- 8:05Speaker 1: So if you're looking for a great gift, this is it.
- 8:10Speaker 1: This is not sponsored forty dollars. That's it. Send it,
- 8:14Speaker 1: you're done, You're welcome, and that's it for this week.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Keeping it light, keeping it quick. If you have any
- 8:21Speaker 1: questions you want to say hi, feel free to always
