- 0:00Speaker 1: I got to I get to I get to do
- 0:04Speaker 1: this thing that makes me feel so empowered, so strong,
- 0:07Speaker 1: so capable, and how awesome of an opportunity is that. Hey, everyone,
- 0:32Speaker 1: Emily Abadi here you are listening to Hurdle Moment from Hurdle.
- 0:38Speaker 1: I'm not even gonna I'm not even gonna bring you
- 0:41Speaker 1: in with a real intro today. I'm just gonna get
- 0:43Speaker 1: right to the fact that, man, here we are. What
- 0:50Speaker 1: is this Tuesday? I'm recording this on Tuesday. It's coming
- 0:52Speaker 1: out on Wednesday. I am two days removed from the
- 0:59Speaker 1: London Marathon, and if I'm honest, I was originally planning
- 1:03Speaker 1: on releasing this episode next Wednesday, but upon getting so
- 1:09Speaker 1: many messages and wonderful emails from all of you telling
- 1:13Speaker 1: me that you were looking forward to the London Marathon recap,
- 1:17Speaker 1: I figured that now was as good of a time
- 1:20Speaker 1: as any to sit down record it. Well, it's still
- 1:23Speaker 1: fresh in my mind and give you my feedback and
- 1:26Speaker 1: what was truly an incredible, incredible day. Now, I say
- 1:31Speaker 1: this into the microphone under the assumption that maybe you've
- 1:34Speaker 1: been here for a little while or a long while,
- 1:37Speaker 1: but you're in the loop that on Sunday, October second,
- 1:41Speaker 1: does some math in my head. I ran my eleventh
- 1:45Speaker 1: marathon in London and it was a journey, a journey
- 1:51Speaker 1: understatement to get there. And so today on the pod,
- 1:54Speaker 1: I'm giving you the full recap. No big edits here,
- 1:59Speaker 1: just kind of stream of consciousness, talking you through what
- 2:02Speaker 1: was going on. Maybe a little bit of behind the
- 2:05Speaker 1: scenes depending on if you follow along on social or whatever,
- 2:10Speaker 1: but it was it was a day and a lot.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Of thoughts and feelings went into the day.
- 2:17Speaker 1: A lot of thoughts and feelings happened during the day,
- 2:19Speaker 1: and I certainly have many, many of them now as well. Again,
- 2:25Speaker 1: I'm recording this in my Paris hotel room. I'm staring
- 2:28Speaker 1: at the Eiffel Tower right now, and overwhelmingly I feel grateful.
- 2:34Speaker 1: That's the sentiment I'm walking away from Sunday with. For me,
- 2:37Speaker 1: Sunday had nothing to do with time, but of course
- 2:41Speaker 1: that's a question that's going to come through. So ultimately
- 2:45Speaker 1: I ran what was according to my garment, something like
- 2:49Speaker 1: twenty six point five something miles in four hours, three
- 2:54Speaker 1: minutes and eleven seconds, and we're going to get into it.
- 3:00Speaker 1: So without further ado, make sure you're following along on
- 3:03Speaker 1: the Social at Hurdle podcast, I'm over at emilya body.
- 3:07Speaker 1: If you have questions about what you listen to in
- 3:10Speaker 1: this episode, I would love to answer them, and I
- 3:13Speaker 1: would love to answer them in an upcoming episode, which
- 3:17Speaker 1: means you know that I'm going to tell you I
- 3:19Speaker 1: would love for you to leave me a voice message.
- 3:21Speaker 1: The link to do that is in the show notes.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Oh man, with that, Let's get into it. Let's get
- 3:28Speaker 1: to hurdling. It has been a year and a half
- 3:41Speaker 1: about since I first signed up for the London Marathon.
- 3:44Speaker 1: I registered for the twenty twenty one London Marathon, I
- 3:49Speaker 1: believe in March of twenty twenty one, and I trained
- 3:53Speaker 1: for it. I'm going to link in the show notes
- 3:56Speaker 1: kind of the journey that happened throughout last year. But
- 4:00Speaker 1: the spoiler here is that I trained for this marathon,
- 4:04Speaker 1: I developed some sort of strain we think it was
- 4:08Speaker 1: my so as and ultimately had to withdraw from London
- 4:13Speaker 1: last year. And so going in to this training cycle
- 4:16Speaker 1: kind of like my redemption moment in twenty twenty two,
- 4:19Speaker 1: I was so excited simply for the opportunity to show up,
- 4:24Speaker 1: and so I registered for the twenty twenty two London Marathon.
- 4:30Speaker 1: I think in April of this year and I started training.
- 4:34Speaker 1: And this training cycle was different than some of my
- 4:37Speaker 1: previous training cycles for many reasons. First of all, I
- 4:41Speaker 1: went into this training cycle knowing that my main priority
- 4:45Speaker 1: was simply to run the marathon and to do it
- 4:48Speaker 1: without injury. I believe that I was so impacted by
- 4:53Speaker 1: having to withdraw last year that I was so focused
- 4:56Speaker 1: on taking care of myself and actually getting to show
- 5:00Speaker 1: up to the start in twenty twenty two, and so
- 5:04Speaker 1: this year I went to weekly physical therapy, something that
- 5:10Speaker 1: I didn't take lightly, not only in my responsibility to
- 5:13Speaker 1: show up for physical therapy and to go home and
- 5:15Speaker 1: do the homework that so often goes hand in hand
- 5:18Speaker 1: with such of an undertaking, but also the financial commitment.
- 5:23Speaker 1: I put a lot of energy and a lot of
- 5:25Speaker 1: thought into that. So there was that. I also made
- 5:28Speaker 1: the conscious decision to work with a run coach. I think,
- 5:32Speaker 1: and I know that a lot of us runners, and
- 5:36Speaker 1: I say that speaking to you, knowing that you may
- 5:38Speaker 1: be one as well, we lean into the opportunity to
- 5:42Speaker 1: work with a run coach. For many different reasons. I
- 5:44Speaker 1: have worked with a coach in the past because my
- 5:47Speaker 1: goal was simply to run fast and to run faster
- 5:51Speaker 1: than I had before, And this year I decided to
- 5:55Speaker 1: work with my run coach. Her name is Rebecca Stow.
- 5:58Speaker 1: I will link to an episode I did with her
- 6:00Speaker 1: in the show notes as well. I decided to work
- 6:03Speaker 1: with Stowe because I wanted help and guidance, knowing that
- 6:08Speaker 1: my schedule was a bit crazy and I didn't want
- 6:11Speaker 1: to put the extra brain work into figuring out how
- 6:16Speaker 1: to navigate marathon training when life already felt a little
- 6:19Speaker 1: bit difficult to navigate on its own. So those were
- 6:23Speaker 1: the two, let's say, experts that I had in my
- 6:25Speaker 1: toolbox going into the marathon. Now that you know that,
- 6:29Speaker 1: let's talk about the weeks leading up to the marathon.
- 6:33Speaker 1: I started this training cycle with a little bit of
- 6:36Speaker 1: planto fasciitis. I would say about a few weeks of
- 6:40Speaker 1: PT leader. The exercises that I received from my PT Luke,
- 6:45Speaker 1: who was also recently on the POD, in combination with
- 6:49Speaker 1: the therapy that he was helping me with, both of
- 6:54Speaker 1: those things alleviated that plantro fasciitis pain. So I was
- 6:58Speaker 1: able to really get into a groove with my training
- 7:00Speaker 1: focus in on the work that my run coach had
- 7:04Speaker 1: me do and dial in there. Two months of training
- 7:08Speaker 1: goes by, and it's feeling really good, right, It's feeling like,
- 7:14Speaker 1: how do I say this?
- 7:16Speaker 2: I don't want to.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Say that it felt effortless, because God knows that if
- 7:19Speaker 1: you run in the Northeast and you run in New
- 7:21Speaker 1: York City, that you know summer running is really freaking hard.
- 7:25Speaker 1: But I felt very capable, and almost more capable than
- 7:30Speaker 1: I even expected, about maybe three weeks to a month ago. Again,
- 7:37Speaker 1: I'm recording this two days after I ran the marathon.
- 7:40Speaker 1: I started to feel a twinge in my left knee
- 7:44Speaker 1: after running my longest run before the long run aka
- 7:48Speaker 1: my twenty mile long run before the marathon, again about
- 7:53Speaker 1: three weeks a month ago. Typically speaking, I usually tackle
- 7:57Speaker 1: as my longest run something like twenty two. Knowing that
- 8:01Speaker 1: I had a history plant fasci itis. I was really
- 8:04Speaker 1: working to be conservative and smart with my training, and
- 8:06Speaker 1: so we decided that twenty would be my longest run.
- 8:10Speaker 1: If you're listening to this and you're like, oh my gosh,
- 8:12Speaker 1: should I be running twenty two? Should I be running
- 8:13Speaker 1: twenty I would advise you to consult one on one
- 8:17Speaker 1: with someone who can talk to and speak to your situation.
- 8:22Speaker 1: But with that said, this is just kind of what
- 8:24Speaker 1: worked for me this time around. So after that long run,
- 8:27Speaker 1: I dealt with some pain in my knee and I
- 8:30Speaker 1: went to PT and threw some hands on work and
- 8:35Speaker 1: talking a lot through what I was experiencing. Luke told
- 8:39Speaker 1: me that he was pretty sure I was navigating some
- 8:41Speaker 1: tendon itis related to the IT band. We start to
- 8:46Speaker 1: incorporate different exercises in my routine to work on strengthening
- 8:51Speaker 1: both my hips, my glutes, all the things that could
- 8:54Speaker 1: be creating this wonkiness. And I make the decision a
- 9:01Speaker 1: week after that to start dialing back on my running
- 9:06Speaker 1: and subbing it in for cycling.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Now.
- 9:08Speaker 1: I got a question in my DMS about this decision
- 9:12Speaker 1: because I wrote something like we wanted to create a
- 9:14Speaker 1: similar training stimulus. And what that means specifically, is a
- 9:20Speaker 1: lot of the running that someone does leading up to
- 9:23Speaker 1: the marathon is focused on endurance work. Right, you're about
- 9:27Speaker 1: to go out and tackle a twenty six point two
- 9:29Speaker 1: mile long run. You want to be able to make
- 9:31Speaker 1: sure that you feel comfortable with time on feet. Depending
- 9:34Speaker 1: on your goals, you may be incorporating other types of
- 9:36Speaker 1: running into your routine, whether that be tempo work or
- 9:39Speaker 1: interval base work, something like eight hundred meter repeats, four
- 9:43Speaker 1: hundred meter repeats, mile repeats, what have you. My only
- 9:48Speaker 1: goal was to mimic a training stimulus. Knowing that I
- 9:52Speaker 1: had the training that I needed under my belt, I
- 9:54Speaker 1: put in the work and I just wanted to make
- 9:57Speaker 1: sure that I kept up my endurance efforts. Well, I
- 10:00Speaker 1: think like three weeks before the marathon, I cycled something
- 10:04Speaker 1: like seventy miles. Two weeks it was forty miles, and
- 10:07Speaker 1: the week before was a mix of light running and cycling.
- 10:12Speaker 2: So there's that. Okay.
- 10:13Speaker 1: I feel like I've given you a lot of the
- 10:15Speaker 1: necessary info you need to know.
- 10:17Speaker 2: How I showed up to London. I showed up to London.
- 10:22Speaker 1: As a result of the wonkiness in my left knee,
- 10:26Speaker 1: I started to rejigger stress out the planter fasci itis
- 10:32Speaker 1: in my right foot once again. So what that meant
- 10:36Speaker 1: is for me, the way that plant fasciitis presents in
- 10:40Speaker 1: my foot is that I feel a lot of pain
- 10:42Speaker 1: in my heel. If you are new to the term
- 10:45Speaker 1: plant fasciitis, essentially what this means is there is a
- 10:48Speaker 1: tendon that runs basically the length of your foot from
- 10:51Speaker 1: the ball to the heel. When you have planter fasci itis,
- 10:54Speaker 1: it gets angry, it gets inflamed, and it causes pain
- 10:57Speaker 1: traditionally again in that heel area. So I got to London,
- 11:02Speaker 1: and I would say in the week and a half
- 11:05Speaker 1: leading up to London that pain was real. It felt frustrating,
- 11:13Speaker 1: I felt frustrated. I was both accepting and I don't
- 11:19Speaker 1: even think I was angry. I was just frustrated and accepting.
- 11:22Speaker 1: I could be both. I was ready to surrender to
- 11:26Speaker 1: the fact that there was absolutely nothing I could change
- 11:28Speaker 1: about the pain that I was feeling in my heel,
- 11:30Speaker 1: while knowing that I was capable of tackling the effort
- 11:33Speaker 1: that was ahead of me, and that there were going
- 11:35Speaker 1: to be things that were out of my control that
- 11:37Speaker 1: I needed to accept if I wanted to show up
- 11:39Speaker 1: and do the thing that I couldn't do the year before.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Period.
- 11:45Speaker 1: About forty eight hours before the race, I flew in.
- 11:50Speaker 1: I felt surprisingly good on that flight. I got off
- 11:54Speaker 1: of the flight and was pleasantly surprised at how my
- 11:58Speaker 1: knee felt. It wasn't really presenting any pain whatsoever, something
- 12:01Speaker 1: that was not the case the week before, when I
- 12:03Speaker 1: was on a flight coming back to New York from
- 12:05Speaker 1: Los Angeles and my heel really didn't feel any sort
- 12:09Speaker 1: of way. I wouldn't say it felt normal, but it
- 12:11Speaker 1: didn't feel nearly as bad as it had previously in
- 12:16Speaker 1: the I would say twenty four hours leading up to
- 12:20Speaker 1: the marathon, the pain in my heel as I had
- 12:25Speaker 1: to stop by the expo and I just grabbed some
- 12:28Speaker 1: like last minute things that I'd forgotten whatnot. It was
- 12:32Speaker 1: at a place where I really felt like again I
- 12:38Speaker 1: keep coming back to the word surrender, like I was,
- 12:40Speaker 1: I had to surrender. There was absolutely nothing I could
- 12:44Speaker 1: do besides utilize the tools in my toolbox to navigate
- 12:48Speaker 1: the pain. And I even called The night before I
- 12:51Speaker 1: went to dinner. I was traveling with my good friend
- 12:54Speaker 1: that was also running the race, and I went to
- 12:55Speaker 1: dinner with her, and after dinner I called my pet
- 13:00Speaker 1: and I said, listen, Luke, how will I know, like,
- 13:04Speaker 1: what is the likelihood that I could actually like rupture
- 13:07Speaker 1: my planter if it hurts during the marathon. And he
- 13:10Speaker 1: told me it's very unlikely. It's extremely unlikely that that's
- 13:16Speaker 1: going to happen, and I said, I'm just trying to envision,
- 13:18Speaker 1: like all scenarios, And as I got off the phone
- 13:21Speaker 1: with him, and in probably like the hour and a
- 13:23Speaker 1: half to two hours between the end of that phone
- 13:25Speaker 1: call and when I went to bed and when I
- 13:27Speaker 1: hobbled back to the hotel after eating pasta, I just
- 13:31Speaker 1: like sat there and I thought about what it would
- 13:34Speaker 1: feel like if I had.
- 13:35Speaker 2: To pull out.
- 13:37Speaker 1: And I knew that there was a fine line between
- 13:41Speaker 1: what would be manageable pain or discomfort and the moment
- 13:46Speaker 1: that I would know in my gut that I could
- 13:49Speaker 1: be doing something that had long term debilitating effects. I
- 13:56Speaker 1: envisioned all of the possibilities. I envisioned what it could
- 14:00Speaker 1: feel like to walk off of the course, hobble off
- 14:04Speaker 1: of the course.
- 14:05Speaker 2: And walk into a med tent and talk to.
- 14:08Speaker 1: A group of people with tears streaming down my face
- 14:12Speaker 1: about the fact that I couldn't keep going. And I
- 14:14Speaker 1: thought about what it could feel like to maybe be
- 14:17Speaker 1: in pain but also know that the pain was manageable
- 14:20Speaker 1: and that I could finish.
- 14:21Speaker 2: And I thought about what.
- 14:21Speaker 1: It might feel like in the miraculous situation that the
- 14:24Speaker 1: pain was gone, when I would wake up in the
- 14:26Speaker 1: morning and it would just be excellent. I thought about
- 14:30Speaker 1: all of it, and I also thought about how grateful
- 14:34Speaker 1: I was to even have the opportunity to start, and
- 14:37Speaker 1: how so many people would have killed to have that
- 14:43Speaker 1: same chance, right, And I think what's important to stress
- 14:47Speaker 1: here is that you can be both grateful and frustrated.
- 14:52Speaker 1: You can feel both thankful and angry, you can feel
- 14:55Speaker 1: both right. And that's exactly how I felt when I
- 14:59Speaker 1: got in to my bed and I saw the light
- 15:02Speaker 1: like sneaking in off of Piccadilly Circus, and I thought
- 15:06Speaker 1: to myself, like, this is just how it is now.
- 15:09Speaker 1: And I knew that, despite laying there with like literally
- 15:13Speaker 1: tears in my eyes, that there was nothing I could
- 15:17Speaker 1: do accept the things that were within my control. I
- 15:20Speaker 1: was done being mad about the things that I had
- 15:23Speaker 1: absolutely no power over, absolutely done with it, right, because
- 15:28Speaker 1: wasting that energy it just didn't do me any good.
- 15:31Speaker 1: It's like if I was to tell you, like tomorrow,
- 15:34Speaker 1: and this was a situation for the marathon, it's going
- 15:36Speaker 1: to rain tomorrow, right, you know that, right, It's gonna
- 15:40Speaker 1: rain tomorrow. There's absolutely nothing you can do about the
- 15:42Speaker 1: fact that it's going to rain tomorrow. So what do
- 15:45Speaker 1: you have the chance to do in that moment. You
- 15:47Speaker 1: can accept that it's going to rain tomorrow and envision
- 15:49Speaker 1: how you want to feel if it's going to rain tomorrow,
- 15:53Speaker 1: and think about the things that are within your power
- 15:55Speaker 1: to do. Or you can sit there and you can
- 15:58Speaker 1: be angry, and you can decide that you're just going
- 16:00Speaker 1: to sulk in the fact that it's going to rain tomorrow.
- 16:03Speaker 1: And I wasn't going to do that anymore, And so
- 16:06Speaker 1: that was it. I woke up on Sunday, and I
- 16:11Speaker 1: got dressed, and I took my ibuprofen, and I uber
- 16:16Speaker 1: eate some coffee, and I ate a peanut butter and
- 16:19Speaker 1: jelly sandwich, and I put on my clothes and I
- 16:22Speaker 1: did the best I could with what I had, and
- 16:24Speaker 1: I grabbed my poncho, thinking that it may rain, and
- 16:28Speaker 1: I hopped on the tube and transferred to another train
- 16:33Speaker 1: and got to the start. And up until I got
- 16:36Speaker 1: to the start, I was thankful that I was with
- 16:38Speaker 1: some friends of mine, but each of us happened to
- 16:41Speaker 1: be in different corrals. So once I got to the
- 16:44Speaker 1: starting village, I had an hour with me and myself
- 16:47Speaker 1: and my thoughts and so I sat there and I
- 16:50Speaker 1: just tried to do some breathing and a lot of
- 16:53Speaker 1: stretching and a lot of warming up, and I radically
- 17:00Speaker 1: accepted what was about to happen. It is such a
- 17:05Speaker 1: bizarre feeling to accept the unknown, right.
- 17:08Speaker 2: It was truly it was.
- 17:13Speaker 1: I'm trying to put this into words because I don't
- 17:16Speaker 1: know if I still I think I'm still trying to
- 17:18Speaker 1: comprehend the growth that occurred for me, not only the
- 17:23Speaker 1: morning before I crossed the starting line, but over the
- 17:26Speaker 1: course of the race. Because the growth that happened for
- 17:29Speaker 1: me was truly something that I don't think how I
- 17:34Speaker 1: respond to this situation. It was something that I wasn't
- 17:36Speaker 1: capable a few years ago. And so that place of
- 17:39Speaker 1: radical acceptance, me being okay with knowing that I couldn't
- 17:43Speaker 1: control what happened next, that that was good for me,
- 17:48Speaker 1: that was special for me. And so yeah, I started.
- 17:50Speaker 1: I ran into a teammate from New York in literally
- 17:54Speaker 1: like one hundred yards out from the start. We walked
- 17:56Speaker 1: there together and we were off and it began, and
- 18:00Speaker 1: you know, it began almost like any other marathon, and
- 18:03Speaker 1: that was kind of serendipitous. It began with me going
- 18:06Speaker 1: out a little too fast and being excited and going
- 18:09Speaker 1: on my way, and literally there wasn't a single point
- 18:12Speaker 1: during that entire marathon if I'm going to speak to
- 18:15Speaker 1: like what I feel about the London Marathon as a whole.
- 18:19Speaker 1: There were spectators and people cheering along the entire course.
- 18:22Speaker 1: I felt so supported, especially in the second half. There
- 18:27Speaker 1: were moments if I had to pick out, like one
- 18:29Speaker 1: thing that rubbed me the wrong way, that the course
- 18:31Speaker 1: got pretty skinny, so to speak, and the field would
- 18:35Speaker 1: have to narrow into like four or five people wide,
- 18:38Speaker 1: and then it opened back up again. That would probably
- 18:41Speaker 1: be my only critique of the entire course. But other
- 18:43Speaker 1: than that, the marathon itself was beautiful. The crowd's energy
- 18:47Speaker 1: was electric, and I really loved how it took me
- 18:51Speaker 1: through so many different parts of London that I had
- 18:53Speaker 1: never been to. I would say that maybe around mile
- 19:01Speaker 1: sixteen was the first time that I like really started
- 19:05Speaker 1: to think about the pain in my heel. And at
- 19:10Speaker 1: this point I had been like running something like eight
- 19:14Speaker 1: eight thirty eight forty five miles.
- 19:16Speaker 2: I'm not entirely sure.
- 19:17Speaker 1: I'm not staring at my splits right now as I
- 19:20Speaker 1: talking to this microphone. But my only goal, as I said,
- 19:24Speaker 1: was to go out and complete this marathon. My secondary
- 19:29Speaker 1: goal of sorts was to not get injured seriously and overall,
- 19:36Speaker 1: I wanted to make sure that I had fun, and
- 19:39Speaker 1: so every once in a while I would like do
- 19:41Speaker 1: a check in with myself and it was like, are
- 19:44Speaker 1: you having fun?
- 19:45Speaker 2: Are you smiling? Are you present? Are you looking around?
- 19:56Speaker 1: Taking a break from today's episodes to talk to you
- 19:58Speaker 1: about my sponsors. First up, let's talk about Open. Open
- 20:02Speaker 1: is a digital mindfulness platform combining breathwork, meditation, and movement.
- 20:08Speaker 1: I'm talking to you about my London marathon experience, so
- 20:10Speaker 1: I would be remiss if I didn't tell you that.
- 20:12Speaker 2: Literally every day.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Leading up to the starting line, I sat down and
- 20:18Speaker 1: I did my four to five minutes of breathwork, and man,
- 20:22Speaker 1: man did I need it. I typically do between five

- 22:43Speaker 1: slash hurdle to get your sample pack today. And I
- 22:55Speaker 1: noticed that so many times when I would go to
- 22:57Speaker 1: do that gut check with myself, I was literally running
- 23:00Speaker 1: and smiling and I laughed thinking about Kipchogi and how
- 23:04Speaker 1: he's so known for that right and like, no wonder
- 23:06Speaker 1: why he looks like he's having such a good time,
- 23:09Speaker 1: because he genuinely is, and he's like exhibiting that to
- 23:11Speaker 1: the crowd. And I felt like I was doing that
- 23:13Speaker 1: as well, Like I mean, let's not compare myself to
- 23:15Speaker 1: Kipchoki here, but just looking around and truly being happy
- 23:19Speaker 1: with the fact that, like I was so aware, Like
- 23:23Speaker 1: I was so aware of my surroundings, and I high
- 23:26Speaker 1: fived a zillion small children, and I like randomly took
- 23:32Speaker 1: candy from strangers. Yeah, saying that out loud makes me
- 23:35Speaker 1: feel some kind of way. But gummies and small chocolates
- 23:39Speaker 1: and the water and yeah, everything right, And again sixteen
- 23:44Speaker 1: comes and the pain starts to hit. And when the
- 23:46Speaker 1: pain starts to hit, it's familiar. It's something that I
- 23:51Speaker 1: know that I have run through before it and can
- 23:53Speaker 1: run through again. That persists for the rest.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Of the run.
- 23:58Speaker 1: So when you're at mile six and you're running a
- 24:00Speaker 1: twenty six mile race, you have ten miles left, that
- 24:02Speaker 1: means that give or take, you know, I'm so bad
- 24:05Speaker 1: at math. I knew I had at least an hour
- 24:07Speaker 1: and a half of running left, and so I really
- 24:11Speaker 1: really shifted my focus into finding the fun. I thought
- 24:15Speaker 1: that if I got outside of my body and I
- 24:18Speaker 1: paid attention to my surroundings and I allowed others to
- 24:23Speaker 1: lift me up on my way, that I would get
- 24:26Speaker 1: to where I wanted to go and what an applicable takeaway, right,
- 24:30Speaker 1: What an applicable takeaway it is to allow others to
- 24:34Speaker 1: help you when you need help. I know I'm not
- 24:37Speaker 1: the only person that struggles with that, right. I know
- 24:39Speaker 1: that I'm not the only person who wants to be
- 24:41Speaker 1: able to take care of things for themselves.
- 24:44Speaker 2: But in this moment, it was.
- 24:46Speaker 1: Such an important reminder for me to allow other people
- 24:50Speaker 1: to show up for me. I needed them period. Somewhere
- 24:54Speaker 1: around this point in time during the marathon, I spot
- 24:57Speaker 1: my good friend that I'm traveling with like up ahead
- 25:00Speaker 1: of me.
- 25:00Speaker 2: I get a burst of energy. I sprint up to
- 25:02Speaker 2: catch her. It's so good to see her.
- 25:05Speaker 1: I take a slew of paparazzi photos while running, and
- 25:10Speaker 1: then within seconds, I'm like, you think that you're going
- 25:12Speaker 1: to run seven thirties to run along with her? And
- 25:15Speaker 1: you are kidding yourself. So I release her and I continue,
- 25:19Speaker 1: And I realized that again in that moment, I fed
- 25:22Speaker 1: off of her energy and I needed to continue that.
- 25:25Speaker 1: So I would say, another two to three miles go by,
- 25:28Speaker 1: and at the end of that third mile, I take
- 25:31Speaker 1: out my AirPods and I commit. I commit to allowing
- 25:35Speaker 1: this to happen, I commit to allowing other people to
- 25:38Speaker 1: help me get to where I need to go.
- 25:41Speaker 2: The pain.
- 25:42Speaker 1: At this point I would say, like seven out of ten,
- 25:46Speaker 1: still manageable, not debilitating. But I would be remiss if
- 25:51Speaker 1: I didn't tell you that I was one hundred and
- 25:54Speaker 1: fifty percent like probably run limping a little bit. I
- 25:58Speaker 1: don't think it was super drafted, but I know that
- 26:00Speaker 1: I was definitely starting to favor my left side. In London,
- 26:04Speaker 1: a lot of the local running cruise running groups there
- 26:09Speaker 1: after mile twenty, which was great for me. In this instance,
- 26:11Speaker 1: I saw a link to his episode in the show notes.
- 26:14Speaker 1: Charlie Dark the founder of Run Deem Crew, which is
- 26:17Speaker 1: a collective of runners based here in London. I saw
- 26:20Speaker 1: him at twenty one and the energy from him and
- 26:22Speaker 1: his crew was electric. I think at mile twenty two,
- 26:26Speaker 1: another woman that was from New York. She runs with
- 26:29Speaker 1: a group called Rage and Release. She cheered for me,
- 26:32Speaker 1: she said, referencing my tank tops. She said, all right,
- 26:35Speaker 1: old Man. I run with a group called Old Man
- 26:37Speaker 1: Run Club in New York. And I heard her and
- 26:40Speaker 1: in the string of ten minute miles, which was what
- 26:43Speaker 1: I was where I was at at that moment I
- 26:46Speaker 1: look at like now, back at the readout from my
- 26:49Speaker 1: Strava and my garment, and there's like an eight thirty
- 26:51Speaker 1: there in that eight thirties entirely because of her motivating
- 26:55Speaker 1: me to keep going, and the rest of it between
- 26:59Speaker 1: twenty two in twenty six was truly heart like. There's
- 27:04Speaker 1: no there's no other way to really put that right,
- 27:08Speaker 1: there's no other way to articulate it. Like for me,
- 27:12Speaker 1: when I think about what got me through those four miles,
- 27:15Speaker 1: it was it was.
- 27:19Speaker 2: It was knowing that I could.
- 27:21Speaker 1: It didn't feel good right, but what did feel good
- 27:25Speaker 1: was paying attention to what was going on around me.
- 27:27Speaker 1: What did feel good was the smiles and the cheers
- 27:30Speaker 1: coming from the crowd. What did feel good was knowing
- 27:33Speaker 1: that once I got to twenty two, there was absolutely
- 27:36Speaker 1: nothing that was going to stop me from getting to
- 27:38Speaker 1: twenty six point two, absolutely nothing. And when I accepted that,
- 27:42Speaker 1: and when I knew that deep in my gut and
- 27:44Speaker 1: deep in my soul, then the only thing that I
- 27:47Speaker 1: had left to do was truly believe, was to believe
- 27:50Speaker 1: in myself and to know that I had the opportunity
- 27:52Speaker 1: to do this thing that I didn't think that I
- 27:55Speaker 1: was genuinely capable of not you know, mentally, but physically
- 28:01Speaker 1: less than twenty four hours before, and so that's what happened. Surprisingly,
- 28:08Speaker 1: I wasn't obscenely emotional when I crossed the finish line.
- 28:11Speaker 1: I think I was just so so grateful, but I crossed,
- 28:19Speaker 1: and oh my god, I was so proud. Proud is
- 28:23Speaker 1: really an understatement. I was so thankful, so thankful that
- 28:28Speaker 1: my body allowed me to do this thing that I love,
- 28:32Speaker 1: so thankful that again, over a year and a half
- 28:35Speaker 1: in the making, I was finally able to cross off
- 28:38Speaker 1: this major moment from my bucket list, and more than anything,
- 28:42Speaker 1: proud of myself for the growth, proud of myself for
- 28:46Speaker 1: not worrying about the time or how it looked right
- 28:53Speaker 1: like f the aesthetics, that was just something that was
- 28:57Speaker 1: so not on my radar anything. When I think about
- 29:02Speaker 1: this race, I think about that I really did it
- 29:05Speaker 1: for me on my terms. I don't know if there
- 29:11Speaker 1: has been a race, a run, a marathon that I
- 29:15Speaker 1: have done since maybe my first marathon where I had
- 29:20Speaker 1: the same goal that I had on Sunday, which was
- 29:24Speaker 1: simply again to have fun and finish, and that despite
- 29:29Speaker 1: the things that I could not control is exactly what
- 29:33Speaker 1: I focused on. I stopped focusing on anybody else, and
- 29:39Speaker 1: I came back to come. I came back to the
- 29:44Speaker 1: notion that I got to I get to I get
- 29:49Speaker 1: to do this thing that makes me feel so empowered,
- 29:53Speaker 1: so strong, so capable, And how awesome of an opportunity
- 30:00Speaker 1: is that sitting here and reflecting on Sunday and knowing
- 30:07Speaker 1: that there are going to be a nice handful of
- 30:10Speaker 1: people that listen to these reflections. I really do believe
- 30:15Speaker 1: that the takeaway that feels the strongest, what I want
- 30:18Speaker 1: you to walk away from this episode knowing, is that
- 30:25Speaker 1: you've got to run for you. It's a beautiful thing
- 30:30Speaker 1: to dedicate your run to other people. It's a beautiful
- 30:32Speaker 1: thing to run for a good cause. But at the
- 30:36Speaker 1: end of the day, the journey is about you.
- 30:39Speaker 2: Period.
- 30:41Speaker 1: If running a marathon, going after any other goal isn't
- 30:47Speaker 1: something that lights your soul on fire, then you have
- 30:51Speaker 1: to ask yourself why are you doing it in the
- 30:54Speaker 1: first place. I showed up on Sunday despite the pain,
- 30:59Speaker 1: to spite my doubts, despite the unknown, because I knew
- 31:04Speaker 1: how important it was to me, and I went out
- 31:07Speaker 1: there on Sunday, and I did the thing that makes
- 31:11Speaker 1: me feel like me because it felt right. But when
- 31:17Speaker 1: we do things because of others or social media or
- 31:21Speaker 1: external pressures and we seek that external validation, it's not
- 31:25Speaker 1: gonna feel the same. And so I leave this recap well,
- 31:32Speaker 1: I know I need to tell you how I'm doing
- 31:34Speaker 1: right now after the after the fact, but before.
- 31:36Speaker 2: We kind of get into that, I leave.
- 31:39Speaker 1: I leave this recap with a lot of gratitude and
- 31:44Speaker 1: a resounding perspective that I can do hard things and
- 31:49Speaker 1: that there is so much beauty in letting go of
- 31:53Speaker 1: the unknown and believing in the potential of possibility while
- 31:57Speaker 1: also being realistic. I'm never gonna tell you to be
- 32:01Speaker 1: like obscenely positive just to be positive again. I went
- 32:05Speaker 1: to bed crying on Saturday night, but I woke up
- 32:10Speaker 1: on Sunday ready with my whole heart to accept whatever
- 32:14Speaker 1: was going to happen next. And so whatever your big
- 32:18Speaker 1: goal is, your big, scary, hairy, audacious goal, I encourage
- 32:24Speaker 1: you to approach it with heart, to approach it with determination,
- 32:28Speaker 1: to approach it with grit, and know that you have
- 32:32Speaker 1: to be your own biggest hype man. You have to
- 32:34Speaker 1: believe in you to go after the things that you want,
- 32:38Speaker 1: to show up with your whole heart. And that's exactly
- 32:42Speaker 1: what I did on Sunday. I gave it every little
- 32:45Speaker 1: bit of myself because I am worth that, and so
- 32:49Speaker 1: are you. How am I doing right now? I'm okay.
- 32:54Speaker 1: I'm again in Paris. I'm kind of limping around and
- 32:59Speaker 1: I have a date with my Pete next week. I
- 33:04Speaker 1: feel tight, but nothing that some stretching hasn't been helping with.
- 33:08Speaker 1: I've been using all of my recovery tools. I traveled
- 33:11Speaker 1: with a pair of normal tech go I've got a
- 33:13Speaker 1: small hyper rice go with me. I've got a bunch
- 33:16Speaker 1: of muscle sprays. I went and got a like massage yesterday.
- 33:19Speaker 2: So I'm doing the best I can with what I have,
- 33:22Speaker 2: just like I did before I showed up to the
- 33:23Speaker 2: starting line. And I'm okay. Am I thinking about running
- 33:27Speaker 2: anytime soon?
- 33:28Speaker 1: Absolutely not, But I am looking forward to trying out
- 33:34Speaker 1: some new stuff once I get home and really focusing
- 33:36Speaker 1: on on what feels good starting with though now, which
- 33:42Speaker 1: means that I've got a bottle of red wine I'm
- 33:44Speaker 1: staring at and uh some exploring to do.
- 33:49Speaker 2: Thank you. I can't say that enough.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Thank you, all of you, every single person that's listened
- 33:53Speaker 1: to this up until this point and that has supported
- 33:55Speaker 1: me on this journey. I cannot imagine at this point
- 33:59Speaker 1: now doing all this without the opportunity to interact with
- 34:05Speaker 1: all of you. So I'm grateful for that, and I
- 34:07Speaker 1: hope that me sharing my story and getting vulnerable about
- 34:10Speaker 1: what I've went through and what I will continue to
- 34:13Speaker 1: go through helps you as you conquer the hurdles that
- 34:18Speaker 1: are going to show up for you inevitably.
- 34:22Speaker 2: Again.
- 34:22Speaker 1: Questions, comments, concerns, thoughts. I want to hear them, and
- 34:25Speaker 1: I'd love for you to leave me a listener question,
- 34:27Speaker 1: leave me a voice message. The link to that is
- 34:30Speaker 1: in the show notes, and I know a Let me
- 34:33Speaker 1: just say this, now, what's next?
- 34:34Speaker 2: I don't have an answer for you. Can we just.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Focus on the present. Let's focus on the present. At
- 34:41Speaker 1: Emily Abadi at Hurdle Podcast, Another Hurdle conquered. Catch you
- 34:47Speaker 1: guys next time.
