- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's a Thursday.
- 0:15It is the 23rd of January. Lovely to have your company.
- 0:19Thanks for tapping on play and inviting me into your day with
- 0:23the next chapter of God's Word. And you might be thinking, ah,
- 0:26Sean, you are lucky that I invited you in today because I
- 0:30am getting just a little bit sick of hearing king after king
- 0:34after king just doing the wrong thing and God punishing them.
- 0:38What is God doing to try and draw them back?
- 0:40He's just sitting on his throne and, and offering them
- 0:43punishment. Well, I've heard you.
- 0:46God heard you. The author of First Kings heard
- 0:49you, and he has shifted gears slightly today.
- 0:52We are not going to hear about kings doing the wrong thing.
- 0:54But today we are going to meet someone who, well, I reckon you
- 0:58probably know this guy. We are going to meet Elijah,
- 1:01God's prophet, today, and we're going to see what God is doing
- 1:05in the midst of these faithless days.
- 1:08So here friends, there's a story for you, one that you've well
- 1:11heard before, but we're going to hear again with fresh ears to
- 1:14see what God has to share with us today as we read together
- 1:18First Kings chapter 17. Now Elijah, who was from Tishbay
- 1:33in Gilead, told King Ahab, as surely as the Lord, the God of
- 1:38Israel lives, the God I serve, there will be no dew or reign
- 1:44during the next few years until I give the word.
- 1:48Then the Lord said to Elijah, Go to the east and hide by
- 1:52Kerrithbrook near where it enters the Jordan River.
- 1:56Drink from the brook and eat what the Ravens bring you, for I
- 1:59have commanded them to bring you food.
- 2:02So Elijah did as the Lord told him, and camped beside
- 2:06Kerrithbrook, east of the Jordan.
- 2:08The Ravens brought him bread and meat each morning and evening,
- 2:12and he drank from the brook. But after a while the brook
- 2:15dried up, and there was no rainfall anywhere in the land.
- 2:19Then the Lord said to Elijah, Go and live in the village of
- 2:23Zarephath, near the city of Sidon.
- 2:27I have instructed a widow there to feed you.
- 2:30So he went to Zarephath. As he arrived at the gates of
- 2:34the village, he saw a widow gathering sticks.
- 2:36And he asked her, Would you please bring me a little water
- 2:40and a cup? As she was going to get it.
- 2:43He called to her, Bring me a bite of bread too.
- 2:47But she said, I swear by the Lord your God that I don't have
- 2:51a single piece of bread in the house, and I only have a handful
- 2:55of flour left in the jar and a little cooking oil in the bottom
- 2:58of the jug. I was just gathering a few
- 3:01sticks to cook this last meal and then my son and I will die.
- 3:07But Elijah said to her, don't be afraid.
- 3:10Go ahead and do just what you've said, but make a little bread
- 3:14for me first. Then use what's left to prepare
- 3:17a meal for yourself and your son.
- 3:19For this is what the Lord the God of Israel says.
- 3:22There will always be flour and olive oil left in your
- 3:26containers until the time when the Lord sends rain and the
- 3:29crops grow again. So she did as Elijah said, and
- 3:34she and Elijah and her family continued to eat for many days.
- 3:39There was always enough flour and olive oil left in the
- 3:42containers, just as the Lord had promised through Elijah.
- 3:46Some time later, the woman's son became sick.
- 3:49He grew worse and worse, and finally he died.
- 3:53Then she said to Elijah, O man of God, what have you done to
- 3:58me? Have you come here to point out
- 4:00my sins and kill my son? But Elijah replied, Give me your
- 4:05son. And he took the child's body
- 4:08from her arms, carried him up the stairs to the room where he
- 4:11was staying, and laid the body on his bed.
- 4:15Then Elijah cried out to the Lord.
- 4:17Oh Lord my God, why have you brought tragedy to this widow
- 4:22who has opened her home to me, causing her son to die?
- 4:27And he stretched himself out over the child three times and
- 4:32cried out to the Lord. Oh Lord, my God, please let this
- 4:36child's life return to him. The Lord heard Elijah's prayer
- 4:41and the life of the child returned, and he revived.
- 4:46Then Elijah brought him down from the upper room and gave him
- 4:49to his mother. Look, he said, your son is
- 4:53alive. Then the woman told Elijah.
- 4:56Now I know for sure that you are a man of God and that the Lord
- 5:01truly speaks through you. Our Lord, as we see the
- 5:14experience of the widow, it often mirrors our own experience
- 5:19in that sometimes we are asked to step out in faith in serving
- 5:24You, and other times things are so clearly right and we can see
- 5:30Your hand at work. But Lord, during those times
- 5:34where there is very little flour or oil left in our jars, our
- 5:39pray that You give us faith to step out in your service.
- 5:45Lord, whether that's us feeling foolish as we stand up and speak
- 5:49on your behalf or whether that's us being generous to the point
- 5:53that it hurts. Lord, we just pray that you
- 5:57continue to open our hearts and lead us to be your people in
- 6:03this world that doesn't know you.
- 6:05And Lord, thank you for those grand acts of mercy and
- 6:10provision where we see your hand just holding us and guiding us
- 6:16and blessing us. You truly are a God who lives
- 6:21our lives day by day with us, and we are so grateful.
- 6:26And we continue to live lives of praise today and every day.
- 6:31In your name we pray Jesus, Amen.
