- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Of the day. Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz.
- 0:13Speaker 3: Not so fast, my friends.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Welcome to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Paps.
- 0:19Speaker 2: It's NBA season. We are in the hardwood section of
- 0:22Speaker 2: the DP Show.
- 0:23Speaker 4: That's what we're calling it? The hardwood?
- 0:24Speaker 2: I call this the basketball portion of the man cave.
- 0:27Speaker 2: It's one of my favorite parts. And you know what
- 0:29Speaker 2: that means, Paul.
- 0:30Speaker 5: We're in the field house. We're going to talk about
- 0:31Speaker 5: a lot of stuff today. NBA, football, Monday Night Football.
- 0:35Speaker 5: First of all, congratulations to the Tampa Rays. Not the
- 0:37Speaker 5: Devil Rays. Once they shed that name, all they did
- 0:39Speaker 5: was win. They're going to face the Brewers in the
- 0:41Speaker 5: World Series. Someone's going to win their first title. But
- 0:44Speaker 5: coming up later today... Our boy Noah Eagle in 15
- 0:47Speaker 5: minutes of NBC Sports to get us ready for the
- 0:49Speaker 5: entire NBA slate tonight.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Oh, man.
- 0:51Speaker 2: The NBA is back today on NBC with a historic
- 0:54Speaker 2: triple header to tip off the new season. Celtics, Pistons
- 0:57Speaker 2: in the afternoon. Then defending champion Knicks raise a banner
- 1:00Speaker 2: and host LeBron in the Sixers. Then the Spurs host
- 1:04Speaker 2: OKC in what we're calling Game 8 of the Western
- 1:06Speaker 2: Conference Finals. Watch it live on NBC and Peacock. Ball,
- 1:11Speaker 2: it's all happening.
- 1:12Speaker 4: Okay, you're a Philly guy.
- 1:13Speaker 5: I remember when LeBron went to Philly, you were texting
- 1:15Speaker 5: me like 18 times, all your crew.
- 1:18Speaker 4: Have you pumped the brakes? Are you more engaged?
- 1:20Speaker 2: More engaged for the very simple reason that the Eagles
- 1:22Speaker 2: have fallen apart. The Phillies are out of the playoffs.
- 1:25Speaker 2: The Flyers look terrible. So now we're all about LeBron.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Find that fountain of youth, baby.
- 1:30Speaker 4: No pressure on LeBron. All right, let's get to it.
- 1:32Speaker 5: Monday Night Football last night. We thought this would not
- 1:35Speaker 5: be a great game, and I'm not sure it was
- 1:37Speaker 5: a great game.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Well, actually, you and I said, watch out for the Commanders.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Had a little bit of a bounce back after that
- 1:42Speaker 2: nightmare ending of the Giants game. And they made it close.
- 1:45Speaker 2: It turned out to be a great game.
- 1:46Speaker 5: But if you turn that game off at halftime, let's
- 1:48Speaker 5: just say you turned it off. You'd be like, wow,
- 1:49Speaker 5: the Niners are cruising. The Commanders have nothing. They can't
- 1:52Speaker 5: figure anything out. But that comeback, was that based off
- 1:55Speaker 5: a real comeback? I don't think so. I think that
- 1:58Speaker 5: was where The Niners at halftime, they basically said, all right,
- 2:01Speaker 5: this is an easy one. Let's start easing into it.
- 2:04Speaker 5: like Usain Bolt pulling up at the 70-meter mark, and
- 2:06Speaker 5: they let the commanders sneak back in.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Absolutely not. The Niners, like every other contender in the NFL,
- 2:13Speaker 2: has serious problems. You saw it. To me, the moment
- 2:16Speaker 2: I started to worry about the Diners is when Mike
- 2:18Speaker 2: Evans caught a ball over the middle, ran out to
- 2:20Speaker 2: the sideline, and had to stretch when he landed. That's
- 2:24Speaker 2: like me playing basketball right now, Paul, having to stretch mid-game.
- 2:27Speaker 5: He's wide receiver old. He didn't take a Zumba class
- 2:29Speaker 5: in the middle of the thing. He just tried to
- 2:31Speaker 5: play through an injury.
- 2:32Speaker 2: No, no, but his... The second he went out of
- 2:35Speaker 2: the game, they fell apart offensively. That's why I thought
- 2:38Speaker 2: it was a real comeback. They've become really reliant on
- 2:41Speaker 2: Mike Evans.
- 2:42Speaker 5: Okay, but Brock Purdy played well. Christian McCaffrey played well.
- 2:45Speaker 4: Kittle.
- 2:45Speaker 5: The defense played pretty well until that third, fourth quarter.
- 2:49Speaker 5: I think that was one of those games where, yeah,
- 2:50Speaker 5: you're injured a little bit, but the commanders were a desperate,
- 2:53Speaker 5: clawing animal at the end, embarrassed from last week, and
- 2:56Speaker 5: they put up a good fight. I will say there
- 2:58Speaker 5: was a moment in the game, I think there's about
- 3:00Speaker 5: 4.15 left. Commanders are driving down. Pinheiro of the Niners
- 3:03Speaker 5: misses that extra point. So it's only a six-point game.
- 3:06Speaker 5: And you're like, this is closer than it should be.
- 3:08Speaker 5: You even texted me like, this is way too close
- 3:10Speaker 5: of a game for forcing us to stay up.
- 3:13Speaker 4: But they had a touchdown run. The running back.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Jeremy McNichols.
- 3:16Speaker 5: McNichols, number 26. And an offensive penalty face-masked by their
- 3:21Speaker 5: offensive lineman took that back. Do the Niners lose that
- 3:24Speaker 5: game if that touchdown goes through?
- 3:26Speaker 2: Maybe, yes. I think they do because, again, the second
- 3:30Speaker 2: Mike Evans got hurt, the offense fell apart. And the
- 3:32Speaker 2: other thing, they had all these three and outs at
- 3:33Speaker 2: the end of the game. What was a common ingredient
- 3:37Speaker 2: in every three and out? They were not handing the
- 3:38Speaker 2: ball to Christian McCaffrey. I don't know if they were
- 3:40Speaker 2: trying to save him or he was a little run
- 3:42Speaker 2: down or they just saw another advantage. Here's the problem
- 3:45Speaker 2: with the Niners. Brock Purdy, it might be the MVP
- 3:48Speaker 2: of the NFL. I will give you that. But he
- 3:50Speaker 2: cannot do it alone. He needs circumstances to be right.
- 3:53Speaker 2: He needs his receivers healthy. He needs that O-line to
- 3:55Speaker 2: keep everybody off him. And he needs Christian McCaffrey to
- 3:58Speaker 2: give him second and five. And that was not happening
- 4:00Speaker 2: later in the game.
- 4:00Speaker 5: Well, I think the Mike Evans thing is a real situation.
- 4:02Speaker 5: If he's not healthy for the rest of the season,
- 4:04Speaker 5: he's kind of had a career rebirth. But if you
- 4:07Speaker 5: look at that, Debo had a bit of a career rebirth.
- 4:09Speaker 5: But Pearsall being out for the season, that's a bigger hit.
- 4:12Speaker 5: But it's really on Mike Evans to stay healthy, or
- 4:14Speaker 5: they don't have a chance.
- 4:15Speaker 2: But that's the thing. There are so many Niners that
- 4:18Speaker 2: you need to stay healthy, and they are not staying healthy.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Nick Bosa's already hurt. Debo's out. They're an old team. Yes,
- 4:24Speaker 2: the Niners, if they're fully constituted, are incredibly talented. But, Paul,
- 4:27Speaker 2: what makes you think that's going to happen?
- 4:28Speaker 5: They've earned some wiggle room by being 5-0. They can
- 4:30Speaker 5: afford to let a guy take a week off. They
- 4:32Speaker 5: can afford a loss here and there. But they built up, math-wise,
- 4:35Speaker 5: a playoff team.
- 4:36Speaker 2: No, no, no. It's mid-October. The season starts after Thanksgiving.
- 4:42Speaker 2: What difference does that make? I'll be dead serious. We
- 4:45Speaker 2: see this team right now at 6-0. Are we going
- 4:47Speaker 2: to see the same roster come January?
- 4:50Speaker 5: Well, no, maybe not the same roster, but there will
- 4:52Speaker 5: be a point in the season. Let's say you get
- 4:53Speaker 5: to week 16, week 17, where you can give some
- 4:55Speaker 5: guys a week off where you say, maybe we don't
- 4:58Speaker 5: get home field advantage. But we give Mike Evans a
- 5:00Speaker 5: week off here then. Nick Bosa eases back.
- 5:02Speaker 2: A little load management?
- 5:04Speaker 4: Honestly, I would load management because you're ahead of the
- 5:06Speaker 4: game on this season.
- 5:07Speaker 2: I know what you're saying, but you're not that far
- 5:10Speaker 2: ahead of the game. And the season's so short. And
- 5:11Speaker 2: I don't care how much you load manage these guys.
- 5:13Speaker 2: They're all in their 30s. Trent Williams is the oldest
- 5:17Speaker 2: guy there. And he somehow stays healthy at left tackle.
- 5:21Speaker 2: And Kittle is coming off an ACL. There's just so
- 5:23Speaker 2: many issues right now. McCaffrey's not a young running back.
- 5:26Speaker 2: So if I had money on the Niners to win
- 5:29Speaker 2: it all, I would feel good because I didn't expect
- 5:30Speaker 2: them to be 6-0. But I would not double down
- 5:33Speaker 2: on that. I think they are right in the mix,
- 5:35Speaker 2: despite playing better than everyone else. I mean, honestly, look
- 5:38Speaker 2: at the final score. This is a commander's team that
- 5:41Speaker 2: lost Terry McLaurin halfway through. I don't even know who
- 5:43Speaker 2: they're playing a running back. Jaden Daniels and Dan Quinn
- 5:47Speaker 2: are still having procedural problems. This is not a great
- 5:50Speaker 2: commander's team, and it was in San Francisco.
- 5:52Speaker 4: All right, let's get to the commander's side of this.
- 5:53Speaker 5: The commander's last week had that embarrassing loss versus the
- 5:56Speaker 5: New York Giants in his time management, clock management. And
- 6:00Speaker 5: in first half, it happened again. Jaden Daniels, who was
- 6:02Speaker 5: a fourth down and two, he's rolling right. He throws
- 6:05Speaker 5: it out of bounds. You're like, why wouldn't he give
- 6:07Speaker 5: it to his guy to make a play, one of
- 6:08Speaker 5: his crew to make a play? And it felt like
- 6:10Speaker 5: same old commanders. We said on this show that the
- 6:13Speaker 5: commanders don't, you know, if they could put, here's the play,
- 6:15Speaker 5: fourth and two, rolling right, flag down, but you don't
- 6:18Speaker 5: give anyone a chance to make a play, we're going
- 6:21Speaker 5: to suppose that you don't know what's going on. It's
- 6:23Speaker 5: fourth and two, whatever it may be. But if you're
- 6:25Speaker 5: the commanders, you needed a statement win tonight to get
- 6:28Speaker 5: everybody off your back. Did they do enough in the
- 6:30Speaker 5: second half to cool the criticism of their franchise as
- 6:33Speaker 5: a whole?
- 6:34Speaker 2: Yes and no. I mean, listen, they were competitive. They
- 6:36Speaker 2: play hard for Dan Quinn. But that fourth down play, there's,
- 6:40Speaker 2: you know, a lot of tentacles. Actually, Dan Quinn talked
- 6:42Speaker 2: about it after the game and tried to explain why
- 6:45Speaker 2: he was caught on camera mouthing down. That was fourth down,
- 6:47Speaker 2: but he at least said there was a reason.
- 6:50Speaker 3: No, I definitely knew it was fourth down. We were
- 6:52Speaker 3: going for it.
- 6:52Speaker 6: And I think what you're referring to, I was probably saying, like,
- 6:56Speaker 6: with the illegal shift, there's not a penalty to go
- 6:58Speaker 6: for a field goal. Like it doesn't go like it's
- 7:01Speaker 6: the turn on downs. Like I think somebody asked me,
- 7:03Speaker 6: can we kick a field goal?
- 7:06Speaker 2: So that's interesting. There was an illegal shift. That was fine.
- 7:09Speaker 2: And I had the same thought. I'm like, does that
- 7:11Speaker 2: play count? Because it almost felt like it was a non-play.
- 7:13Speaker 5: I almost threw the BS flag there. And Dan Quinn,
- 7:15Speaker 5: I think he was a lot of people have.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:17Speaker 5: I thought he was trying to confuse us with semantics
- 7:18Speaker 5: there in his explanation. I don't think he would admit it.
- 7:21Speaker 5: If he didn't know his fourth down, I wouldn't, but
- 7:23Speaker 5: I'm not sure that the lip readers out there seem
- 7:25Speaker 5: to think he said it.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Well, the, He said, basically, they said, are they going
- 7:29Speaker 2: to replay the down because there's a pre-snap penalty? He said, no,
- 7:32Speaker 2: it's fourth down, so we're out of luck. The truth
- 7:34Speaker 2: is they should have kicked the field goal because they
- 7:36Speaker 2: had no play on that fourth and basically two. They
- 7:39Speaker 2: were kind of aggressive on fourth down. I don't think
- 7:41Speaker 2: it made sense. They almost felt in the first half
- 7:44Speaker 2: like desperate. We need to get back in this game.
- 7:47Speaker 2: And then they start running ball in the second half.
- 7:49Speaker 2: I like Dan Quinn personally, but I don't think he
- 7:51Speaker 2: recovers from that. Do you expect him to be the
- 7:53Speaker 2: coach next year?
- 7:54Speaker 5: No, I think if it was the play at halftime,
- 7:58Speaker 5: if halftime was the game and it went on to
- 7:59Speaker 5: be a complete blowout, he may have been fired this afternoon.
- 8:03Speaker 5: We were talking about that in the DP show. If
- 8:04Speaker 5: you're going to pull the Band-Aid, pull the Band-Aid.
- 8:08Speaker 2: For who, though? They have two very young coordinators.
- 8:11Speaker 5: Oh, you're just announcing that the job's open first. You're
- 8:13Speaker 5: just letting the world know that this job is open first.
- 8:15Speaker 5: You were embarrassed on national TV. Some owners do that.
- 8:17Speaker 5: Look at the owner of the Colts the other day.
- 8:19Speaker 5: She fired her GM because she got embarrassed on national TV.
- 8:22Speaker 3: And that happens.
- 8:23Speaker 2: But Josh Harris was talking to Dan Quinn before the game.
- 8:26Speaker 2: First of all, he's smart. He doesn't have any assistant
- 8:29Speaker 2: who can possibly take over in the wildest dreams. So
- 8:32Speaker 2: that's one thing. but they respect Dan Quinn. They did
- 8:34Speaker 2: get to the NFL game. I have a feeling symbolically
- 8:37Speaker 2: they would have given him the season, but they're not
- 8:40Speaker 2: a good team and they're injured too. So it's not
- 8:42Speaker 2: going anywhere positive.
- 8:43Speaker 5: Let's get to not so fast helmet stickers off last
- 8:46Speaker 5: night's game.
- 8:46Speaker 4: Pearl, you're going first. Who gets the helmet sticker?
- 8:48Speaker 2: I'm going with Mike Evans just about how impactful he was.
- 8:50Speaker 2: I know he got hurt, but he had three catches
- 8:52Speaker 2: for 94 yards. He was the key to the game.
- 8:56Speaker 2: When he went out, the Niners forgot how to play
- 8:58Speaker 2: offense and He's just so good, and he's perfect for
- 9:00Speaker 2: Brock Purdy because Brock Purdy likes guys who are big targets. Basically,
- 9:04Speaker 2: anything within five yards of Mike Evans, he is catching.
- 9:07Speaker 2: I think they give him a week off against Atlanta
- 9:09Speaker 2: if they're smart.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Yes.
- 9:10Speaker 2: And then they have a bye because he's got Achilles tendonitis,
- 9:14Speaker 2: and I don't want that to be anything worse.
- 9:15Speaker 5: All right, my helmet sticker goes to 49ers safety. Malik Mustafa,
- 9:20Speaker 5: back-to-back plays late in the game. He drilled the running back.
- 9:24Speaker 5: Wait till you see this play.
- 9:25Speaker 4: There he is. He's from Wake Forest. He's a heck
- 9:27Speaker 4: of a hitter. I'm going to give you my comp
- 9:29Speaker 4: on this guy, but first of all, he just drills
- 9:31Speaker 4: the running back on this play.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Bingo.
- 9:34Speaker 5: Unbelievable hit. That looked like Steve Atwater back in the day.
- 9:38Speaker 5: Shoulder to shoulder. And then the next play, they're trying
- 9:40Speaker 5: to make a, this could have been a touchdown. This
- 9:43Speaker 5: could have been the game. He hit and poked the
- 9:45Speaker 5: ball simultaneously, knocked him out of bounds. No go, saved
- 9:48Speaker 5: a touchdown.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Yeah, he was great.
- 9:50Speaker 4: Who's my comp on him?
- 9:52Speaker 2: Yeah, well, who do you got?
- 9:52Speaker 5: Bob Sanders. Remember the safety from the Colts back in
- 9:55Speaker 5: the day? He has a Bob Sanders vibe to him.
- 9:56Speaker 2: I thought you were going to go Cam Chancellor.
- 9:58Speaker 4: Not that big. I don't think he's that big.
- 10:00Speaker 2: He's a little bigger than Bobby Sanders, but one thing
- 10:03Speaker 2: about the Niners, they hit with their helmet every single time.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Every single time. Fred Warner, they famously picked up a call,
- 10:10Speaker 2: picked up a flag when it was clear helmet-to-helmet, then
- 10:13Speaker 2: made a make-up call. The next play he came out
- 10:15Speaker 2: and helmet-to-helmeted somebody. I wonder how the NFL is going
- 10:17Speaker 2: to view that because I think there's going to be
- 10:19Speaker 2: four or five fines coming out of that. The Niners
- 10:21Speaker 2: are trying to say we're going to hit on every
- 10:23Speaker 2: single play illegally and dare them.
- 10:25Speaker 3: To call it.
- 10:25Speaker 4: And Greenlaw is usually the leader of that.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Yeah, but Warner was using his helmet all game long.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Mustafa also uses his helmet, but I don't really want
- 10:32Speaker 2: to yuck their yums after a big win last night. Nice.
- 10:35Speaker 2: All right, coming up next, not so fast. I totally
- 10:39Speaker 2: tear into the AP poll. I have major, major issues.
- 10:43Speaker 2: And Paul weighs in again on Steve Young. You're going
- 10:45Speaker 2: to want to hear this. Not so fast. Every week
- 10:49Speaker 2: on Not So Fast, we do the Pub and Grub
- 10:51Speaker 2: of the Week. This week, the big game, Ohio State
- 10:53Speaker 2: and Indiana. Paul, you're a Midwestern guy. What do you got?
- 10:56Speaker 4: Bloomington, Indiana. Been there a bunch. We got a lot
- 10:58Speaker 4: of recommendations. I have a few of my own. Everyone
- 11:00Speaker 4: knows Nick's English Hut. When you're there, get the Stromboli Pearl.
- 11:03Speaker 4: You're a big Stromboli guy.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Back in the day. I love Stromboli.
- 11:06Speaker 4: Upstairs Pub.
- 11:07Speaker 5: Check that out before and during and after the game.
- 11:09Speaker 5: Crazy Horse, I'm told, has a huge beer selection. Here's
- 11:12Speaker 5: the bonus tip from Not So Fast. Pork tenderloin sandwiches
- 11:16Speaker 5: in Central Indiana are They're huge. They're like manhole coverings.
- 11:20Speaker 5: They're gigantic.
- 11:21Speaker 4: There's a place down 446 south of town, The Cabin.
- 11:25Speaker 4: Go to The Cabin to get the best pork tenderloin sandwiches.
- 11:28Speaker 4: It's debatable. Find out.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Can't wait. Help me grow the week.
- 11:35Speaker 5: Back on Not So Fast, Paxton Perloff, NBC Sports. That's
- 11:40Speaker 5: Junior Caminero gone, as Dan Patrick would say back in
- 11:43Speaker 5: the day. He's going to take his time getting around
- 11:45Speaker 5: the base path.
- 11:46Speaker 4: You know, he's no hurry.
- 11:48Speaker 5: He has no curfew. That looked like a scene out
- 11:51Speaker 5: of a movie. He's beating his chest, playing with the crowd.
- 11:54Speaker 5: He didn't win the World Series here.
- 11:56Speaker 4: Did he, on this hit?
- 11:57Speaker 2: No.
- 11:58Speaker 4: I don't think he won the World Series. That's a
- 12:00Speaker 4: long trot.
- 12:01Speaker 2: But, you know, the rule is if you criticize MLB
- 12:06Speaker 2: players for celebrating or taking too long, then you sound old.
- 12:09Speaker 4: Oh, because you're a hater.
- 12:10Speaker 2: You're an old fogey. You're a hater.
- 12:11Speaker 3: Right.
- 12:11Speaker 2: The bat flip is now perfectly acceptable. The fact that
- 12:14Speaker 2: the higher the bat flip, the better.
- 12:16Speaker 5: So you're not telling Junior Caminero what to do. What
- 12:18Speaker 5: do you think Senior Caminero would think of that play?
- 12:20Speaker 4: He's probably old school, right?
- 12:21Speaker 2: Yeah. I think that the celebrating is too much personally,
- 12:26Speaker 2: but I'm not saying that out loud. I said it
- 12:28Speaker 2: right now, but I don't really want to be the
- 12:30Speaker 2: guy who's criticizing players.
- 12:31Speaker 5: I'd be more like the fist pump guy, probably like
- 12:34Speaker 5: a calm fist pump.
- 12:35Speaker 4: But, you know, beating the chest, you can do it.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Actually, I'm a Calvin Johnson, Barry Sanders guy. Hand the
- 12:41Speaker 2: ball to the official. Really? Run around the bases like,
- 12:43Speaker 2: of course I hit a home run. That's what I do.
- 12:45Speaker 2: You don't have to celebrate. It's not even celebrating. It's
- 12:47Speaker 2: just what I do.
- 12:48Speaker 4: What about pointing to the big man? You think about that?
- 12:50Speaker 2: You do it quick. I mean, if you are an
- 12:52Speaker 2: authentic religious person, yes. But, you know, I have to
- 12:56Speaker 2: see your whole body of work in regards to your
- 12:58Speaker 2: spirituality before I say whether or not you can point
- 13:01Speaker 2: to the big man.
- 13:01Speaker 4: Pauly Palfs was an altar boy. We'll get into that later.
- 13:04Speaker 4: It's time for warm takes here on Not So Fast.
- 13:06Speaker 4: I'll go first, Pearl. Nice and warm. Getting you ready
- 13:09Speaker 4: for October. Here we go.
- 13:11Speaker 5: The New York Knicks are getting their rings and their
- 13:13Speaker 5: banner tonight, something I think a lot of people didn't
- 13:15Speaker 5: think they were going to see. Nobody had them going
- 13:18Speaker 5: to the NBA Finals last year. The Milwaukee Brewers are
- 13:21Speaker 5: this close to their first title. They're a feel-good story.
- 13:24Speaker 5: The Indiana Hoosiers last year, everybody knows they won the title.
- 13:26Speaker 5: They're the feel-good story of all time in college football.
- 13:29Speaker 5: I think it's a little refreshing these days that the
- 13:32Speaker 5: favorites in sports aren't winning. The Rams are in a
- 13:35Speaker 5: little bit of a jam.
- 13:36Speaker 4: The L.A.
- 13:36Speaker 5: Dodgers didn't win. In the NFL, who knows who's the favorite,
- 13:40Speaker 5: but baseball, it's usually Yankees, Dodgers. In the NBA, it's
- 13:43Speaker 5: certain teams, even like Oklahoma City, even though they can
- 13:45Speaker 5: be feel-good-ish because it's.
- 13:47Speaker 4: A small market, but it's refreshing. Look at the Knicks.
- 13:50Speaker 5: You think they can't be a feel-good story because they're
- 13:52Speaker 5: a huge market? Well, they've been struggling for like 50 years.
- 13:55Speaker 5: They've been good here and there, but they never got
- 13:57Speaker 5: over the hump. And they were kind of a likable
- 13:59Speaker 5: team last year, hardworking, not star-laden. Jalen Brunson supposedly took
- 14:04Speaker 5: less to help out the team.
- 14:06Speaker 4: It was a feel-good story.
- 14:07Speaker 5: And I'm not sure the reasons this is happening. I'm
- 14:10Speaker 5: going to defer to you, Perloff.
- 14:12Speaker 4: But in college football, you can say NIL. The money
- 14:14Speaker 4: is spread around. Parody, talent.
- 14:17Speaker 5: In the NBA, it doesn't feel like teams are being
- 14:20Speaker 5: built as superpowers anymore, like dream teams, three-man teams, the
- 14:24Speaker 5: big three type thing. And in baseball, it feels like
- 14:27Speaker 5: it's a bit of analytics. And the Brewers analytics team
- 14:31Speaker 5: seems to be winning it for their team because they're
- 14:33Speaker 5: not winning it by spending.
- 14:34Speaker 4: So I think this is... It's good for sports to
- 14:37Speaker 4: have dynasties.
- 14:38Speaker 5: It's good to have heavyweights like the Golden State Warriors
- 14:40Speaker 5: or whatever it may be. But it's also refreshing to
- 14:42Speaker 5: have some teams like the Dodgers, or not the Dodgers,
- 14:44Speaker 5: but the Knicks in there, the Indiana Hoosiers in there.
- 14:48Speaker 4: It's refreshing.
- 14:48Speaker 2: It's kind of weird, though, to say a New York team.
- 14:50Speaker 2: I know exactly what you mean. They were likable, but
- 14:53Speaker 2: they don't really feel like the same thing as the
- 14:55Speaker 2: Indiana Hoosiers.
- 14:56Speaker 5: No, not historically, but the Knicks have struggled for so long.
- 14:59Speaker 5: When they got there, you're like, I can't believe this team.
- 15:02Speaker 5: Not a team with LeBron James or Kevin Durant or
- 15:04Speaker 5: some superstar like Giannis is going to get it done.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think you mentioned the Seahawks. I didn't. Yeah,
- 15:10Speaker 2: out of nowhere.
- 15:11Speaker 5: The Seahawks, nobody had them before the season. They dominated
- 15:13Speaker 5: the whole season, and they did it with not a
- 15:15Speaker 5: superstar quarterback.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. I agree. I think Anna Lakes is one
- 15:19Speaker 2: place to start. I think the way the financial structure
- 15:21Speaker 2: of leagues and taxes has a lot to do with it.
- 15:23Speaker 3: Yep.
- 15:23Speaker 2: And we'll see what baseball does to get to the
- 15:25Speaker 2: Dodgers this summer. I mean this winter. Hopefully we will
- 15:29Speaker 2: have baseball next year. Okay, I'm going to turn to
- 15:31Speaker 2: college football for my first warm take. Paul, I'm going
- 15:34Speaker 2: to have a blanket statement here. I hate the A people.
- 15:37Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 15:37Speaker 2: I've always hated AP poll. Why they're doing a pre-season
- 15:40Speaker 2: AP poll when it's a bunch of 18 to 22
- 15:43Speaker 2: year olds who are on new teams and they have
- 15:44Speaker 2: no idea who's good or not. And then basically they
- 15:47Speaker 2: perpetuate the same mistakes throughout the whole season. Now, my
- 15:51Speaker 2: biggest issue, Miami number one and BYU number two, is
- 15:55Speaker 2: that neither of them have really played anyone. I know
- 15:57Speaker 2: BYU beat Notre Dame, and that's why they're number two.
- 15:59Speaker 2: But why is Miami number one, Paul? Let me list
- 16:02Speaker 2: you their wins. Go ahead. They beat Stanford. Academically, that's tough. Football,
- 16:06Speaker 2: not so much. Florida A & M, that's tough on
- 16:08Speaker 2: the band front, but not on the field. Now, they
- 16:11Speaker 2: won at Wake Forest. At the time, we had no
- 16:13Speaker 2: idea Wake Forest was good. So I'll give them some
- 16:15Speaker 2: credit for that. But that's their one ranked win. Then
- 16:18Speaker 2: Central Michigan, Clemson, who's terrible. Then they went to double
- 16:21Speaker 2: overtime against Florida State, who's not good, and that vaults
- 16:24Speaker 2: them up to number one. I think the poll always
- 16:27Speaker 2: overrates records and never looks at the quality of wins.
- 16:31Speaker 2: They don't care who Texas beat. That's irrelevant. They have
- 16:34Speaker 2: two losses. So if you look at the top 10,
- 16:36Speaker 2: it's really much more about avoiding a loss and actually
- 16:40Speaker 2: beating a good team, which encourages the team to have
- 16:43Speaker 2: bad scheduling and Oregon will play Portland State instead of
- 16:46Speaker 2: a real team. All right, Pearl.
- 16:47Speaker 5: I'm going to speak for the AP poll. I'm going
- 16:49Speaker 5: to be AP Paul right now.
- 16:50Speaker 4: Call me AP Paul. Here's my thing.
- 16:52Speaker 5: If I was the AP poll and heard your take,
- 16:54Speaker 5: my response would be, shh, don't tell anybody that we
- 16:57Speaker 5: don't mean anything, that half the time the people voting
- 17:00Speaker 5: don't really watch all the games.
- 17:02Speaker 2: The AP poll is only 65 people.
- 17:04Speaker 5: Right, but what I'm saying is that the AP poll
- 17:07Speaker 5: serves one service, for the networks to alert you that
- 17:10Speaker 5: there's a 1 versus 7 matchup, a 2 versus 8 matchup,
- 17:14Speaker 5: They want to do this in September. If all of
- 17:16Speaker 5: a sudden I turn on the TV and I see,
- 17:18Speaker 5: coming up later today on September 8th is the 2
- 17:21Speaker 5: seed versus the 5th seed, you know, the 5th ranked team,
- 17:24Speaker 5: that makes you more likely to lean in and tune
- 17:26Speaker 5: into that game. They will never get rid of the
- 17:28Speaker 5: preseason poll, and the networks will never let it happen.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Wait, that makes no sense. It makes a lot of sense. Because,
- 17:34Speaker 2: first of all, if AP said we're not doing a poll,
- 17:36Speaker 2: then the networks would just use another poll. This is
- 17:38Speaker 2: the Associated Press. This is the journalism outlet of record.
- 17:43Speaker 2: I don't think AP is the way to serve. Somebody's
- 17:45Speaker 2: going to do a poll. So it doesn't matter if
- 17:46Speaker 2: it's AP or someone else. AP is pretty informed.
- 17:49Speaker 4: The AP makes money off this. They get paid to
- 17:51Speaker 4: do this.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Right, but so why don't they do it the right way?
- 17:53Speaker 2: Why don't they do it based on who you beat? Yeah,
- 17:56Speaker 2: there's so many obvious biases. And then they play out.
- 17:59Speaker 2: You think they're not important, but then they eventually are
- 18:01Speaker 2: used in the actual CFP selection committee. No, I think
- 18:05Speaker 2: that making Miami number one just makes no sense.
- 18:08Speaker 4: I think it could be very lazy by AP voters
- 18:10Speaker 4: by saying, like, They always go with undefeated. Like you said,
- 18:14Speaker 4: they always will defer to undefeated.
- 18:15Speaker 5: Because it's simple and unchallengeable by the average fan.
- 18:19Speaker 2: But then it makes a huge mess come November when
- 18:21Speaker 2: they're trying to pick the 12-team playoff. It always does. Yeah,
- 18:24Speaker 2: which is good, but it just drives me crazy. And
- 18:27Speaker 2: I don't buy your take that they're doing it just
- 18:29Speaker 2: for clicks. Because why do the networks do it?
- 18:31Speaker 4: No, not for clicks.
- 18:32Speaker 5: It's for networks to promote the upcoming weekend games of.
- 18:35Speaker 4: like a battle of a two versus a four.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Well, who's paying the AP to do a poll? You
- 18:39Speaker 2: think the newspapers are paying AP to have a top
- 18:42Speaker 2: 25 poll? I don't think that it works. You're actually
- 18:46Speaker 2: ruining it for me by saying that I'm a sucker
- 18:48Speaker 2: to corporate greed here. You don't think CBS is like, hey, AP,
- 18:53Speaker 2: here's $ 30, 000. Let's put Ole Miss at number seven.
- 18:57Speaker 5: I love your response there. It's time for my next
- 18:59Speaker 5: warm take. Let's calm it down a little bit in here.
- 19:01Speaker 5: Steve Young has had a hell of a week. The
- 19:03Speaker 5: other day, he's at the sidelines for BYU when his
- 19:05Speaker 5: BYU squad beat Notre Dame. Last night, he's at Monday
- 19:08Speaker 5: Night Football. There was a Ring of Honor thing, and
- 19:10Speaker 5: there he is with Joe Montana. What a great week
- 19:13Speaker 5: to be Steve Young. And everyone knows Steve Young.
- 19:15Speaker 4: He's a Hall of Famer. He's a first ballot Hall
- 19:17Speaker 4: of Famer.
- 19:17Speaker 5: But his path to get there, to be a first
- 19:19Speaker 5: ballot Hall of Famer at quarterback, is the weirdest path
- 19:22Speaker 5: of all time, right? He was drafted into the USFL out.
- 19:25Speaker 4: Of College of BYU. So he goes to the BYU,
- 19:27Speaker 4: he goes to USFL.
- 19:29Speaker 5: You get no credit for USFL when you're being voted
- 19:31Speaker 5: for for the Hall of Fame. So that delayed his
- 19:33Speaker 5: NFL career two years. Then he goes to play for
- 19:36Speaker 5: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- 19:37Speaker 4: They stunk.
- 19:38Speaker 5: He wasn't much better. They were 3-16 in his two
- 19:41Speaker 5: years with the Buccaneers. That made his career even worse.
- 19:45Speaker 5: That means he's in the hole for his career. Then
- 19:47Speaker 5: he goes to, at age 26, the San Francisco 49ers.
- 19:51Speaker 5: He sits, barely playing, behind Joe Montana for five seasons.
- 19:55Speaker 5: That means from age 21... Until age 31, he had
- 19:58Speaker 5: done nothing positive in his NFL career to get into
- 20:01Speaker 5: the Hall of Fame. He'd actually made it worse. He
- 20:04Speaker 5: wasn't called a bust, but he was like this, what
- 20:06Speaker 5: are we doing with this guy? He's on ice in
- 20:08Speaker 5: San Francisco. Joe Montana gets hurt. They move on from
- 20:11Speaker 5: Joe Montana. And at age 31, he takes over the
- 20:15Speaker 5: San Francisco 49ers. Over the next seven seasons, he's an all-pro,
- 20:19Speaker 5: not pro bowler, all-pro six times. Led the NFL in
- 20:22Speaker 5: touchdown passes four times. Led the NFL in completion percentage
- 20:25Speaker 5: five times. a Super Bowl MVP, and during that time,
- 20:29Speaker 5: during those eight seasons, he ran for 3,600 yards at quarterback,
- 20:33Speaker 5: one of the best of all time running the ball.
- 20:35Speaker 5: This guy is a first ballot Hall of Famer while
- 20:38Speaker 5: doing nothing in his 20s.
- 20:40Speaker 4: You'll never see anything like that again.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Wild.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Stay with me, Pearl.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Yeah, tell people why you're talking about Steve Young.
- 20:48Speaker 4: Because I'm fascinated by Steve Young.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Well, also, too, because he affected the outcome of the
- 20:52Speaker 2: BYU game.
- 20:52Speaker 4: Oh, because he ran on the field first.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Yeah, that's why you were thinking about Steve Young.
- 20:56Speaker 4: I've been thinking a lot.
- 20:57Speaker 5: I think he's one of the more underrated athletes, not
- 21:00Speaker 5: just quarterbacks, in American history. Because when we talk about
- 21:03Speaker 5: the greatest quarterbacks of all time, His name rarely gets
- 21:06Speaker 5: brought up because he didn't have the 15-year, he had
- 21:09Speaker 5: the 9-year career.
- 21:11Speaker 2: Obviously, I'm not saying he's a system quarterback, but it
- 21:13Speaker 2: helped being with Bill Walsh.
- 21:14Speaker 4: Of course it helped being with Bill Walsh, but he
- 21:15Speaker 4: maxed out that system.
- 21:17Speaker 2: I'm trying to think of an analogy.
- 21:21Speaker 4: Kurt Warner? Yeah, the start was great, the end was great,
- 21:23Speaker 4: but it's a wonky career.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I'm just saying Kurt Warner got started super late.
- 21:27Speaker 2: I can't really think of anybody else.
- 21:28Speaker 4: Warren Moon, maybe.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Warren Moon because he's sort of blackballed from the NFL.
- 21:34Speaker 4: Warren Moon would.
- 21:35Speaker 5: Be the only comp of a guy who started maybe
- 21:37Speaker 5: after age 28 and did all his work.
- 21:39Speaker 2: I think Karl Warren might have been 28. Yeah, could be. Okay,
- 21:43Speaker 2: that's a great one. I totally agree. All right, back
- 21:45Speaker 2: to basketball. Tonight, they're going to raise the banner at
- 21:48Speaker 2: Madison Square Garden. You're obviously going to get my guy,
- 21:50Speaker 2: Timothy Chalamet, Ben Siller, Michael Imperioli, Nurse Jackie. Go down
- 21:55Speaker 2: the list. Enjoy it, New York fans, because this is it.
- 21:58Speaker 2: And I don't think anyone really cares. I think this
- 22:01Speaker 2: is the most one and done championship I've ever seen
- 22:04Speaker 2: in my life.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Oh, man.
- 22:05Speaker 2: In the sense that. The Knicks fans are like, we're good.
- 22:07Speaker 2: That's fine. You know, it's been over 30 years. Actually, 1973. Right.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Almost 50 years. It had been forever. Now they're absolutely satisfied.
- 22:17Speaker 2: The team played in the late June. They're already older.
- 22:20Speaker 2: There's already an issue with Karl-Anthony Towns' contract. They lost
- 22:24Speaker 2: Mitchell Robinson. There are so many reasons, I think, that...
- 22:27Speaker 2: I don't think a lot of people are picking the
- 22:29Speaker 2: Knicks to repeat, and I don't think a lot of
- 22:31Speaker 2: fans really care. The party is still going on from
- 22:34Speaker 2: last summer. Knicks fans are completely satisfied. Felt like a movie.
- 22:39Speaker 2: It probably will be a movie. In fact, You have
- 22:41Speaker 2: the Ben Stiller documentary, and there'll be a fictional movie.
- 22:44Speaker 2: It was great. But I don't think anybody needs any more,
- 22:47Speaker 2: and I don't think they're getting any more, Paul.
- 22:48Speaker 4: Yeah, I think you're right.
- 22:49Speaker 5: I think if you're a 40 or over New York
- 22:51Speaker 5: Knicks fan, you say, that's it.
- 22:53Speaker 4: Let's wrap it up.
- 22:54Speaker 5: Let's watch some NBA. Let's watch our team. But I'm
- 22:56Speaker 5: probably not getting another one, and I have to be
- 22:58Speaker 5: cool with it.
- 22:59Speaker 2: Right. You know, we have some crazy Knicks fans in
- 23:01Speaker 2: the office. Let me ask you a question. If they lose,
- 23:03Speaker 2: even tonight, game one against the Sixers on NBC, do
- 23:06Speaker 2: you think they're already going to be a little bitter,
- 23:08Speaker 2: be like, ah, man, we should be better right now?
- 23:10Speaker 4: It's all about the age of the person.
- 23:12Speaker 5: The Knicks fan in the back room you're talking about
- 23:14Speaker 5: is about 28 years old, 27 years old. And he
- 23:17Speaker 5: still thinks, this is how life is. You get a
- 23:19Speaker 5: title every 20 years. You maybe get one in five years.
- 23:22Speaker 5: Or maybe we go back to back. As a Cub fan,
- 23:25Speaker 5: in 2017, sure I wanted the Cubs to win the
- 23:28Speaker 5: World Series on repeat. But it's like, hey, you won
- 23:30Speaker 5: the lottery last week. You're still playing the lottery.
- 23:32Speaker 4: You only get one.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Yeah. And also, nobody repeats in the NBA anyway. And
- 23:36Speaker 2: if anybody's going to repeat, you would have thought the
- 23:39Speaker 2: OKC from last year or maybe the Nuggets with Joker
- 23:42Speaker 2: or maybe the Celtics. Those teams all seem very poised
- 23:45Speaker 2: to repeat. Not this team.
- 23:47Speaker 3: All right.
- 23:47Speaker 5: Coming up next, we're going to get you all prepped
- 23:49Speaker 5: for the NBA season with our boy, Noah Eagle of
- 23:52Speaker 5: NBC Sports.
- 23:53Speaker 4: He's going to hang with us. Right here. Stick around.
- 23:55Speaker 4: Not so fast. That's true.
- 23:58Speaker 2: It's true.
- 23:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:00Speaker 2: I would love to be at the garden, though. That
- 24:01Speaker 2: being said, tonight would be exciting.
- 24:02Speaker 4: Noah could probably get us in. Make some calls.
- 24:05Speaker 3: I don't think so.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Welcome back to Not So Fast. Perloff and Paps, NBC
- 24:11Speaker 2: Sports Now and Peacock. And as we've been talking about
- 24:14Speaker 2: all show, we are so fired up. NBA is starting,
- 24:17Speaker 2: of course. The voice of NBA on NBC, Noah Eagle,
- 24:20Speaker 2: is joining us from San Antonio, 9.30 p.m. Eastern tonight.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Thunder at Spurs. Noah, how exciting is this?
- 24:29Speaker 3: Oh, it's the best. It's the best.
- 24:31Speaker 7: We've got three incredible games, certainly throughout the day on
- 24:34Speaker 7: NBC and Peacock. But our last game here in San Antonio,
- 24:38Speaker 7: we feel, has a chance to be arguably the best
- 24:40Speaker 7: on the court. When you've got the Spurs and the Thunder,
- 24:42Speaker 7: we're calling it Game 8 of the Western Conference Finals.
- 24:45Speaker 7: It feels like it. You feel the hate walking around
- 24:47Speaker 7: the town right now. So, yeah, it should be a
- 24:50Speaker 7: ton of fun.
- 24:50Speaker 5: I want to start with Wemby. You've seen him in
- 24:52Speaker 5: person multiple times overseas here. I haven't seen him play
- 24:55Speaker 5: in person. And I'm curious, the physicality of him when
- 24:59Speaker 5: you're watching from your vantage point right next to the court,
- 25:01Speaker 5: how can you describe it to the casual fan?
- 25:04Speaker 3: It's almost impossible to describe.
- 25:06Speaker 7: I say that there are only a couple guys who,
- 25:08Speaker 7: no matter what the price of admission is, they are
- 25:11Speaker 7: worth paying. I've said that Steph Curry, even just his
- 25:14Speaker 7: warm-ups and everything that he does, that has always been
- 25:16Speaker 7: worth whatever the price of admission is. LeBron James, certainly
- 25:20Speaker 7: in his prime, that was special and unique when he
- 25:23Speaker 7: was early in his Cleveland days and then Miami and
- 25:25Speaker 7: back in his second stint in Cleveland. I've said Nikola
- 25:28Speaker 7: Jokic probably has to be on that list. If you
- 25:31Speaker 7: see him up close, it's so much different than when
- 25:33Speaker 7: you watch it on TV, and it's special on TV.
- 25:36Speaker 3: But this guy's at the top of that list.
- 25:38Speaker 7: He probably trumps all those other ones because when you
- 25:41Speaker 7: see it, especially when you're close to the court, it
- 25:43Speaker 7: doesn't look real.
- 25:44Speaker 3: I'd say let's start there.
- 25:45Speaker 7: It looks like it would be an AI type of
- 25:48Speaker 7: thing that you just find online.
- 25:51Speaker 3: I'll send this to my buddies because it's funny. It's not.
- 25:54Speaker 7: It's serious. And this guy is as serious as it gets.
- 25:57Speaker 7: He's as competitive as it gets. You feel that competition.
- 26:01Speaker 7: You feel that vigor towards his opponents emanating through him
- 26:05Speaker 7: when you're up close with him. And then the movements
- 26:08Speaker 7: and the athletic ability, I've never seen anything like it.
- 26:11Speaker 7: The hope is that he can stay healthy for 15
- 26:14Speaker 7: years and do this at this high level for 15
- 26:16Speaker 7: years because NBA fans are treated on a nightly basis.
- 26:19Speaker 2: No, I don't really understand how the Spurs are built.
- 26:22Speaker 2: I know they experimented with a three-guard lineup this summer.
- 26:26Speaker 2: You know, they seem very small and wimpy, kind of like, oh,
- 26:29Speaker 2: he's 7'5. He's going to handle everything inside. I kind
- 26:32Speaker 2: of worry that he has to do too much because
- 26:34Speaker 2: he's surrounded by four guards.
- 26:37Speaker 3: Here's what I'll say.
- 26:37Speaker 7: If there's one guy who can do it, though, it's
- 26:40Speaker 7: this guy. Watch games that the San Antonio Spurs play defensively.
- 26:45Speaker 7: Even last season when they had more length out there
- 26:48Speaker 7: and really the length that they were putting out there
- 26:50Speaker 7: wasn't anything crazy or different than what they're going to
- 26:53Speaker 7: you know Dylan Harper's he's fairly long Stefan Castle is
- 26:57Speaker 7: multiple defensively De'Aaron Fox would be one of the the
- 27:00Speaker 7: smaller aspects of that defense and then Devin Vassell is
- 27:04Speaker 7: is a physical presence himself but they were putting out
- 27:06Speaker 7: Julian Champagny last year well he might not be a
- 27:09Speaker 7: one or a two he's probably a two or three
- 27:12Speaker 7: And so he's kind of in that same vein. So
- 27:14Speaker 7: I don't think they lost that much size realistically going
- 27:17Speaker 7: to the three-guard lineup. But Victor Wimbonyama is such a
- 27:20Speaker 7: deterring force that when people drive, they see him even
- 27:25Speaker 7: out of the corner of their eye and they retreat.
- 27:27Speaker 7: They stop going towards the basket. So I think no
- 27:30Speaker 7: matter who you put out there, as long as he's
- 27:32Speaker 7: the base and the anchor of that defense, it's kind
- 27:34Speaker 7: of irrelevant.
- 27:35Speaker 5: So Noah, we do a thing here on Not So
- 27:37Speaker 5: Fast and even on the Dan Patrick Show. We have
- 27:38Speaker 5: a stat we'd love for you to work in. You're
- 27:40Speaker 5: big time now. It's called Shots.
- 27:43Speaker 4: Discouraged, SD.
- 27:44Speaker 5: Because Wemba Nyama gets people to bail on a layup,
- 27:47Speaker 5: and they just dribble through and give it off to someone.
- 27:49Speaker 5: So if sometime during the season, maybe not tonight, you
- 27:52Speaker 5: could work in SD, Shots Discouraged, we'd appreciate it.
- 27:54Speaker 3: SD.
- 27:54Speaker 5: You don't have to answer now. We understand a lot
- 27:57Speaker 5: of pressure. I want to get to the East a
- 27:58Speaker 5: little bit. Jalen Brown goes to the Sixers. LeBron goes
- 28:01Speaker 5: to the Sixers. It feels like a rebirth of Northeast basketball.
- 28:05Speaker 5: The Knicks are more than relevant. They won the title.
- 28:07Speaker 5: The Celtics are always good. It's a great time to
- 28:10Speaker 5: be a Northeast NBA fan.
- 28:12Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely.
- 28:13Speaker 7: I think those three teams that you mentioned all feel
- 28:15Speaker 7: like they're going to be in the thick of things.
- 28:17Speaker 7: Certainly the Knicks essentially running it back with the roster
- 28:20Speaker 7: that they had last year, adding Andre Drummond to replace
- 28:23Speaker 7: Mitchell Robinson, who goes to Boston and feels like he's
- 28:26Speaker 7: a great fit for Joe Mizzoula, just from a personality standpoint.
- 28:30Speaker 7: Maybe not necessarily in terms of three-point shooting and what
- 28:33Speaker 7: we've seen from Mizzoula teams and the way they like
- 28:35Speaker 7: to play offensively, but I think mentality-wise, he and Mizzoula
- 28:38Speaker 7: are going to click. I think that team's going to
- 28:40Speaker 7: be really good. It's a really good at minimum regular
- 28:43Speaker 7: season team, a team that easily could end up the
- 28:46Speaker 7: top team in the Eastern conference, which is a loaded
- 28:49Speaker 7: Eastern conference this year when it's all said and done.
- 28:52Speaker 7: And Philadelphia feels like the scariest playoff team, right? I'm
- 28:55Speaker 7: curious how it looks for the regular season, but so
- 28:58Speaker 7: long as they're on the dance floor and you've got
- 29:00Speaker 7: to play them seven games and they are fully healthy,
- 29:03Speaker 7: they are going to be a scary out for any
- 29:05Speaker 7: team in the Eastern conference this I'm certainly partial to
- 29:08Speaker 7: the Brooklyn Nets. They're going to be a lot better too.
- 29:10Speaker 7: That's the thing in just the Northeast. If you want
- 29:12Speaker 7: to consider the Wizards kind of in that realm as well,
- 29:16Speaker 7: they're going to be a ton better. I think they're
- 29:17Speaker 7: going to be a ton of fun this year. The
- 29:19Speaker 7: fun thing about the Eastern Conference, I feel like there's
- 29:22Speaker 7: 15 teams in the conference. 14 of them feel like
- 29:25Speaker 7: they are going to be postseason teams this year.
- 29:28Speaker 3: Internally, I should say.
- 29:29Speaker 7: Internally, they believe going into the year, we're going to
- 29:32Speaker 7: be a playoff team. I'd say Milwaukee's the one team
- 29:35Speaker 7: that probably going into the season doesn't have the expectation
- 29:39Speaker 7: they're in that retool, rebuild mode. But Brooklyn thinks, hey,
- 29:42Speaker 7: we're going to be at minimum a play-in team, top
- 29:45Speaker 7: 10 in the Eastern Conference with Julius Randle and Michael
- 29:47Speaker 7: Porter Jr., high-level scorers, high-level ball handlers now with Yegor
- 29:52Speaker 7: Domen and Mikel Brown, Chicago Bulls. Much improved. They're going
- 29:57Speaker 7: to be Norman Powell, an all-star last year. Caleb Wilson
- 30:00Speaker 7: has a chance to be the best player from this draft.
- 30:02Speaker 7: His ceiling is probably the highest. You add pieces to
- 30:05Speaker 7: all these other teams that weren't necessarily contenders last year.
- 30:08Speaker 3: I think that's what makes it the most fun.
- 30:10Speaker 7: But all those teams you mentioned, they expect to be
- 30:12Speaker 7: at the top, which is exciting for NBA fans to
- 30:15Speaker 7: watch exactly how it plays out.
- 30:16Speaker 2: No doubt. I know you might have already answered this
- 30:19Speaker 2: a little bit, but we're doing our surprise teams later
- 30:21Speaker 2: in the show. Give me an out-of-nowhere team that could
- 30:24Speaker 2: even be a contender. A little sleeper.
- 30:27Speaker 7: Yeah, I think that the teams that picked one and
- 30:29Speaker 7: two in the draft, both Washington and Utah, I would
- 30:32Speaker 7: expect them to be fully in the thick of things.
- 30:35Speaker 7: I mentioned Chicago. I think Chicago is the type of
- 30:37Speaker 7: team that's going to get off to a really quick start.
- 30:39Speaker 7: And the question will be, can they sustain all of
- 30:42Speaker 7: that through the season? I just think Caleb Wilson is amazing.
- 30:46Speaker 7: and is going to be one of the best players
- 30:49Speaker 7: in the league. Again, staying healthy over time is going
- 30:51Speaker 7: to be the key. But Nick Claxton's a good addition there.
- 30:54Speaker 7: Norman Powell, Josh Giddey is probably better than people give
- 30:57Speaker 7: him credit for. Modest Buzella, same type of deal. That
- 31:00Speaker 7: starting five is intriguing. And Tiago Splitter, I think, is
- 31:03Speaker 7: an excellent head coach. But the two teams that picked
- 31:05Speaker 7: at the top of the draft, Washington, top six seed
- 31:08Speaker 7: to me in the Eastern Conference, if everything comes together
- 31:11Speaker 7: the right way, which I expect it to.
- 31:13Speaker 3: And Utah, I think, is going to be legitimately good.
- 31:15Speaker 7: I just think that Darren Peterson is NBA-ready, NBA mentality.
- 31:19Speaker 7: Lowry Marketing is a legitimate all-star. Keontae George just got
- 31:23Speaker 7: his extension, rightfully so. He's deserved that. Jaron Jackson Jr.,
- 31:28Speaker 7: former Defensive Player of the Year, a guy who can
- 31:31Speaker 7: go out there and spread the floor. He's multiple offensively.
- 31:34Speaker 7: He's certainly a beast defensively. The one concern for them
- 31:37Speaker 7: is going.
- 31:37Speaker 3: To be rebounding.
- 31:38Speaker 7: But Will Hardy, their head coach, I think, is finally
- 31:41Speaker 7: going to get to show just how impressive he is
- 31:43Speaker 7: because he hasn't had the rosters or the direction yet
- 31:46Speaker 7: that he can go out there and really flex his muscles.
- 31:49Speaker 7: There are a lot of people that thought he'd be
- 31:50Speaker 7: the next head coach for the Boston Celtics. There are
- 31:53Speaker 7: a lot of people thought he'd be the next head
- 31:54Speaker 7: coach for the San Antonio Spurs when Greg Popovich retired.
- 31:57Speaker 7: He ends up in Utah. He stays on a contract
- 32:00Speaker 7: extension in Utah. I think he's going to showcase himself
- 32:03Speaker 7: a lot this year, which is going to put them
- 32:05Speaker 7: in a good position long term.
- 32:07Speaker 2: All right, Noah, I know you just came from L.A.
- 32:09Speaker 2: If you're a Los Angeles sports fan, where do you
- 32:12Speaker 2: look for hope right now? Because the Dream Team Rams
- 32:16Speaker 2: are more of a nightmare right now. I don't know
- 32:19Speaker 2: what the vibe is out there, but if I'm a
- 32:21Speaker 2: young fan and I need to invest in one team
- 32:23Speaker 2: to do well, who do I got?
- 32:25Speaker 3: Yeah, let's look at USC. Come on, on NBC.
- 32:27Speaker 2: There you go.
- 32:29Speaker 3: For the next two weeks. Yeah, it's a legitimate question.
- 32:33Speaker 7: UCLA would actually be probably the correct answer. UCLA football
- 32:36Speaker 7: team right now. undefeated top 10 in the country, and
- 32:39Speaker 7: Bob Chesney is special. And they have a chance, if
- 32:41Speaker 7: you look at their schedule, to get to the end
- 32:43Speaker 7: of the season in that final week against USC without
- 32:46Speaker 7: a loss. That would be unbelievable. They would be a shoe-in, essentially,
- 32:50Speaker 7: for the playoff. It's Kurt Cignetti 2.0 all over again.
- 32:54Speaker 7: But in terms of the professional teams, I still do
- 32:56Speaker 7: have belief in the Rams. I know that Devontae Adams,
- 32:59Speaker 7: that was unfortunate news, and that does change things a
- 33:02Speaker 7: little bit offensively. I think Pukunuku is still working himself
- 33:05Speaker 7: back as well. The Kyron Williams stuff was interesting after
- 33:08Speaker 7: the game the other day. But you made the move
- 33:11Speaker 7: to acquire Miles Garrett, expecting you were going to have
- 33:13Speaker 7: Miles Garrett defensively. And they just haven't. I was there
- 33:16Speaker 7: in Australia. Even the one game he played, he was
- 33:18Speaker 7: not anywhere close to himself. It was so obvious. He
- 33:22Speaker 7: never made a single impactful rush. There was never a
- 33:26Speaker 7: play where I'm like, oh, there was Miles Garrett in
- 33:28Speaker 7: the backfield. So at some point, he's going to be
- 33:30Speaker 7: back there. And at some point, Trent McDuffie is going
- 33:33Speaker 7: to be back. And at some point, this defense is
- 33:35Speaker 7: going to be whole. And you feel like the defense
- 33:37Speaker 7: gets whole. That's a really challenging unit for offenses to
- 33:41Speaker 7: go up against. And then the second part of that is,
- 33:43Speaker 7: even without Devontae Adams, the genius of Sean McVay that
- 33:47Speaker 7: is now permeated through the rest of the NFL was
- 33:49Speaker 7: in the 13 personnel stuff, what they've been capable of
- 33:51Speaker 7: doing with their three tight end looks. They also took
- 33:54Speaker 7: Max Claire in the second round, and they believe in
- 33:56Speaker 7: this kid moving forward. At some point, one of these
- 34:00Speaker 7: tight ends will emerge as the next threat. whether it
- 34:03Speaker 7: is Terrence Ferguson back on the field becoming the receiving threat,
- 34:07Speaker 7: Max Clare turning into what they expected him to, or
- 34:10Speaker 7: the other guys who have just been steady presence, Tyler Higby,
- 34:13Speaker 7: a Parkinson, Davis Allen, all of those guys do different things.
- 34:17Speaker 7: So I still kind of would put my hope into
- 34:19Speaker 7: that if I were an LA sports fan, but it
- 34:22Speaker 7: is definitely a challenging time, which by the way, I
- 34:25Speaker 7: get it.
- 34:25Speaker 3: They've had a lot of success recently.
- 34:27Speaker 7: So maybe, maybe it's just the, the, the scales evening
- 34:31Speaker 7: out a little bit.
- 34:31Speaker 5: All right, Noah, you got to get ready for work.
- 34:33Speaker 5: We're going to get you out of here in one minute.
- 34:34Speaker 5: I want to go back to the Olympics, France versus USA,
- 34:38Speaker 5: you and Dwayne Wade. Everyone knows the golden dagger final call.
- 34:42Speaker 5: My favorite call was a different one. I think it
- 34:44Speaker 5: was the play before the shot before by Steph Curry.
- 34:47Speaker 5: When he hit it, you just went out and yelled ridiculous.
- 34:51Speaker 4: It's great.
- 34:52Speaker 5: I love that call Noah, because it's exactly what everybody
- 34:55Speaker 5: was thinking in my head.
- 34:56Speaker 4: I was like, that is a ridiculous shot. You don't
- 34:58Speaker 4: even try that. And you just go, Ridiculous! Sometimes when
- 35:01Speaker 4: you throw that out, do you have to watch back
- 35:04Speaker 4: later to remember what you said?
- 35:06Speaker 7: That one I think was unique because, to your point,
- 35:10Speaker 7: it was almost like I blacked out a.
- 35:12Speaker 3: Little bit during that entire stretch.
- 35:13Speaker 7: The thing is with Steph, I was so lucky because
- 35:17Speaker 7: I did the Clippers on radio for four years. And
- 35:21Speaker 7: when you're in the Pacific Division, you get to see
- 35:22Speaker 7: Steph Curry four times a year if he's healthy. But
- 35:25Speaker 7: you see the Warriors four times a year, potentially in
- 35:28Speaker 7: the playoffs as well. And so I had enough experience
- 35:31Speaker 7: with Steph Curry to know that all.
- 35:33Speaker 3: Bigger shots still coming.
- 35:35Speaker 7: I just had seen too many of those Steph Curry avalanches.
- 35:38Speaker 7: I was like, I can't go all in yet. And
- 35:41Speaker 7: so at that point, I just think I just going
- 35:43Speaker 7: off whatever I was feeling to your point that that's
- 35:45Speaker 7: how I felt at that exact moment.
- 35:47Speaker 3: And I just let it rip. So.
- 35:48Speaker 7: I don't think I recognized it probably to your point
- 35:50Speaker 7: until afterward, but most of the time I'm pretty aware
- 35:53Speaker 7: of what I'm saying.
- 35:53Speaker 2: Love the call, bud. Thanks, Noah. Tonight, 9.30 Eastern, Thunder
- 35:58Speaker 2: at Spurs. Can't wait. Enjoy the beginning of the season.
- 36:00Speaker 2: We'll talk to you soon.
- 36:01Speaker 7: Appreciate it, guys. Always great to be on with you.
- 36:04Speaker 7: And again, congrats on the show.
- 36:05Speaker 3: It's been great.
- 36:06Speaker 2: Thanks, buddy. That's fun.
- 36:07Speaker 4: Great to have Noah on the show.
- 36:09Speaker 5: But I wanted to go back to that because he
- 36:11Speaker 5: has now a little bit of announcer immortality. That Steph
- 36:14Speaker 5: Curry last five, six shots. against France in the gold
- 36:17Speaker 5: medal game. I'll remember that the rest of my life.
- 36:19Speaker 5: And to get to call that, that gives you broadcaster immortality.
- 36:22Speaker 2: Yeah, no, it's great. Olympics will do that. I mean, yes. Yeah.
- 36:26Speaker 2: And also he's just incredibly talented. Him and his dad,
- 36:29Speaker 2: a huge, huge fan. All right. I'm also very fired
- 36:32Speaker 2: up for NBA. We're going to get into some more NBA.
- 36:34Speaker 2: And we have interesting comments from Louis Riddick on the
- 36:37Speaker 2: DP show that I think will start a very interesting conversation.
- 36:41Speaker 2: That's next. Not so fast.
- 36:43Speaker 4: Yeah, I remember watching that, and the ball goes in,
- 36:45Speaker 4: and I was like, he goes, ridiculous. And I was like,
- 36:48Speaker 4: that's the word. That's the word I wanted to yell out.
- 36:51Speaker 3: That was great.
- 36:58Speaker 2: C.J.
- 36:58Speaker 3: Stroud, Caleb Williams.
- 37:02Speaker 2: Don't do this, Dan. Don't do this to me.
- 37:05Speaker 8: You know when I do this, there's always the people
- 37:06Speaker 8: who go.
- 37:07Speaker 3: You hate my guy.
- 37:08Speaker 2: You love my guy.
- 37:08Speaker 3: You hate my guy.
- 37:10Speaker 2: I hate that crap. Come on. Your network does this
- 37:14Speaker 2: every single day, Lois. I know, and I.
- 37:16Speaker 8: Hate that too.
- 37:18Speaker 2: I hate when I get put in that position.
- 37:20Speaker 8: But yeah, you're right. That's what we do. I like C.J.
- 37:23Speaker 8: Stroud's demeanor. I like how people react around him. And
- 37:28Speaker 8: I trust D'Amico so much. And when he talks about
- 37:30Speaker 8: this kid, he loves him. And I just think that
- 37:34Speaker 8: those intangible things are the things that lead to a
- 37:37Speaker 8: guy being able to have 10, 15, 20-year careers. And
- 37:41Speaker 8: I think CJ could be one of those guys, and
- 37:43Speaker 8: he is on it right now. It's not as dramatic
- 37:46Speaker 8: as all the stuff that Caleb could do, and I
- 37:48Speaker 8: think that's what, and I love that about him.
- 37:50Speaker 3: I would pick CJ.
- 37:55Speaker 5: That is CJ Stroud versus Caleb Williams, Louis Riddick. One
- 37:59Speaker 5: of my favorite parts about having Louis Riddick on the
- 38:02Speaker 5: show is Dan asks him questions. He doesn't know what's coming,
- 38:05Speaker 5: and Louis grinds on them. And we hit Louis right
- 38:08Speaker 5: at the end with, who would you rather have going forward?
- 38:11Speaker 5: Caleb Williams of the Bears, C.J. Stroud of the Texans.
- 38:15Speaker 5: And he paused for like eight seconds like he needed
- 38:17Speaker 5: time to work this one out. What would your answer
- 38:19Speaker 5: be to this question?
- 38:20Speaker 2: I would, oh man, it's hard. I would lean Caleb Williams.
- 38:23Speaker 2: I do worry about Caleb Williams. He's at his best
- 38:26Speaker 2: when he moves around a lot and he could be
- 38:28Speaker 2: injury prone. I'm so impressed by C.J. Stroud this year.
- 38:31Speaker 2: I agree with what Riddick said earlier in the show,
- 38:33Speaker 2: pay him whatever he wants. But I think I would still,
- 38:37Speaker 2: ah man, I would lean Caleb, but I think it's
- 38:39Speaker 2: actually closer than you might have thought coming into the season.
- 38:41Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that's a good point because if we
- 38:43Speaker 5: asked this question six weeks ago, C.J. Stroud still had
- 38:46Speaker 5: the stink of last year's playoff game on him, and
- 38:48Speaker 5: people would have been like, that's not even a topic.
- 38:51Speaker 5: And Caleb was rolling in the offseason because he had
- 38:53Speaker 5: such a good finish to last year.
- 38:55Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely. The funny thing is the Texans are not winning. C.J. Stroud,
- 38:59Speaker 2: I mean, they're winning a couple games now.
- 39:01Speaker 4: They're in the mix.
- 39:02Speaker 2: I have no idea how good Caleb Williams is. I
- 39:05Speaker 2: really don't. I don't know what his legacy is going
- 39:06Speaker 2: to be. There still has not been a Chicago Bears
- 39:09Speaker 2: passer to get 4,000 yards, and I've got to be honest,
- 39:11Speaker 2: I don't know if Caleb's going to be that guy.
- 39:12Speaker 4: He's not going to get it this year. We're missing
- 39:14Speaker 4: a couple games.
- 39:15Speaker 2: And even when they scored 59 points in week one
- 39:17Speaker 2: against Carolina, it's not like he's putting them 350 yards.
- 39:20Speaker 2: They are a run first, run second team. So this
- 39:24Speaker 2: is very interesting. I mean, I think if we put
- 39:26Speaker 2: a poll out, 80% would say Caleb, but I love
- 39:29Speaker 2: Riddick's enthusiasm. for C.J. Stroud.
- 39:30Speaker 5: All right, coming up, oh, Grant Hill also on the
- 39:33Speaker 5: Dan Patch show today of NBC Sports talking about the
- 39:36Speaker 5: NBC season coming up. Now, Perloff, he may agree with
- 39:39Speaker 5: you about the Knicks that it might be one and done.
- 39:41Speaker 5: Here's what Grant Hill had to say about the East.
- 39:43Speaker 1: I think the East is much, much more challenging. I mean,
- 39:46Speaker 1: I think it's going to be a tough, a tough road.
- 39:49Speaker 1: I mean, the Knicks will be there. They're, they're a
- 39:51Speaker 1: great team. They bring everyone back. You know, I think,
- 39:56Speaker 1: you know, Boston's still going to be good. Philadelphia, Miami
- 40:00Speaker 1: is going to be upgraded with Giannis there.
- 40:03Speaker 4: Indiana.
- 40:04Speaker 1: I mean, I, I think that team, you know, Halliburton, they,
- 40:07Speaker 1: you know, he comes back, you, you bring Zubats, like,
- 40:10Speaker 1: The East is going to be a slugfest. I actually
- 40:14Speaker 1: think the Knicks, as good as they are and as
- 40:17Speaker 1: good as they'll be, they're going to have a tougher
- 40:20Speaker 1: road to the finals.
- 40:23Speaker 2: I'm glad that Grant Hill agrees with me.
- 40:25Speaker 4: Just two smart guys talking sports.
- 40:26Speaker 2: Question for you, Paul. How many times do you think
- 40:28Speaker 2: Grant Hill has been on with Dan?
- 40:31Speaker 5: Oh, honestly, probably 40. And that's a lot.
- 40:35Speaker 2: And I'm thinking all the way back, remember, wasn't Grant
- 40:37Speaker 2: Hill in the piano commercial for This Is Sports Center
- 40:39Speaker 2: and Dan had a tough day and Grant Hill's playing
- 40:42Speaker 2: piano in the lobby and Dan puts a dollar in
- 40:44Speaker 2: his jar?
- 40:44Speaker 5: I think, and Dan would join us to talk about this,
- 40:46Speaker 5: but The first commercial he did for this at SportsCenter
- 40:50Speaker 5: was with Grant Hill.
- 40:51Speaker 4: That was the first one Dan did.
- 40:52Speaker 2: Wow. And that was great. He did so many great ones.
- 40:54Speaker 2: But Grant Hill is always an A-plus interview. I don't
- 40:57Speaker 2: know about his background today. That was a little sparse.
- 40:59Speaker 4: A little sparse. But, you know, he's a minimalist.
- 41:01Speaker 2: Yeah. But I keep hearing this thing about the NBA
- 41:04Speaker 2: that the East is crazy right now. You really don't
- 41:06Speaker 2: have many off nights if you're playing an Eastern Conference team.
- 41:09Speaker 4: It's a lot of fun.
- 41:09Speaker 5: It's kind of refreshed with LeBron going to Philly. You know,
- 41:13Speaker 5: you grew up back in the day when we were
- 41:14Speaker 5: real little kids.
- 41:15Speaker 3: Yeah. It was Philly.
- 41:15Speaker 2: Philly.
- 41:16Speaker 4: And it wasn't really the Knicks.
- 41:17Speaker 5: It was the Celtics and Philly were the top two
- 41:19Speaker 5: hammers in the East.
- 41:20Speaker 2: They get to play the Lakers.
- 41:22Speaker 4: They get to play the Lakers. You'd see Philly on
- 41:25Speaker 4: TV all the time.
- 41:25Speaker 2: Yeah, but let's talk about Chicago. Toronto is a super
- 41:29Speaker 2: hot pick, too. There's a lot of teams that haven't
- 41:32Speaker 2: been good in recent years. Charlotte.
- 41:33Speaker 4: Detroit's been good in the regular season.
- 41:35Speaker 2: Detroit's been dominant, but I think you can go pretty deep.
- 41:38Speaker 2: Poor Knicks. I love that the Knicks are the defending champion.
- 41:41Speaker 2: We're not giving them any love. Again, they were a
- 41:43Speaker 2: great story.
- 41:45Speaker 5: As we say, I don't need love. I just need
- 41:46Speaker 5: a parade. All right, let's do some NBA picks. These
- 41:49Speaker 5: are our picks, Perloff. We've got to get them on
- 41:51Speaker 5: the record. I'm going to go with most surprising team
- 41:55Speaker 5: in the NBA. It doesn't mean they're going to win
- 41:56Speaker 5: the title, just they're going to outdo expectations.
- 41:58Speaker 4: You want to go first?
- 41:59Speaker 2: Okay. I have a very surprising team. The Brooklyn Nets,
- 42:03Speaker 2: and I'll tell you why. They have some talent. Julius
- 42:05Speaker 2: Randle and Michael Porter Jr., but it's not that. They
- 42:08Speaker 2: do not have their draft pick. They have a swap
- 42:10Speaker 2: with the Rockets from some old trade. So they have
- 42:13Speaker 2: no reason to tank. And in the NBA, come late
- 42:16Speaker 2: in the season, that is a huge advantage if you
- 42:19Speaker 2: want some Ws. So I think they hang around and
- 42:22Speaker 2: hang around. And they have a very interesting roster. It
- 42:25Speaker 2: seems like they're headed in the right direction, which hasn't
- 42:28Speaker 2: been the case in a long, long time. But I
- 42:30Speaker 2: think the fact that they don't have a draft pick
- 42:32Speaker 2: means that they're going to be trying really hard come April.
- 42:34Speaker 5: I'm going with the Portland Trailblazers, my most surprising team.
- 42:38Speaker 5: Nobody talks about them off the radar for a while.
- 42:40Speaker 5: You love your guy Donovan Klingin. They're going to win
- 42:43Speaker 5: 52 games and be a little saucy.
- 42:44Speaker 2: 52 games?
- 42:46Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a big jump for them.
- 42:47Speaker 2: That's expecting a lot of help from guards who are
- 42:52Speaker 2: a little bit older. I don't know if I see that.
- 42:53Speaker 4: Let's go with disappointing. Most disappointing team?
- 42:56Speaker 5: I'm going to go with the LA Lakers because the
- 42:57Speaker 5: coverage rarely matches the production. I just don't think they
- 43:00Speaker 5: did a lot to improve themselves. They've got new players.
- 43:03Speaker 5: I don't think they've got great players. And it's going
- 43:04Speaker 5: to be Luka putting up a lot of action. And
- 43:07Speaker 5: not much help again. It seems like a rinse and
- 43:09Speaker 5: repeat type situation.
- 43:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, Walker Kessler in the middle maybe do
- 43:12Speaker 2: a couple things. I'm going to go my most disappointing teams.
- 43:14Speaker 2: I'm going to go a little taller. How about the
- 43:16Speaker 2: San Antonio Spurs? Wow. It's not like the Super Bowl
- 43:19Speaker 2: where if you lose, you have a jinx. But I
- 43:22Speaker 2: don't think the Spurs are quite.
- 43:25Speaker 2: On the brink of a title. I think they were
- 43:26Speaker 2: a little ahead of their skis in last year's finals.
- 43:28Speaker 4: Okay.
- 43:29Speaker 2: Here's my issue. I keep saying it. Wemby is not
- 43:31Speaker 2: getting enough help inside, so he's got to do everything.
- 43:34Speaker 2: I feel like he'll wear down throughout the season. Keeping
- 43:37Speaker 2: him healthy for 82 games, then several rounds of the playoffs,
- 43:40Speaker 2: that seems like a pipe dream to me.
- 43:41Speaker 3: All right.
- 43:41Speaker 5: It's time for our MVPs. My MVP is a guy
- 43:44Speaker 5: who you said is going to disappoint, Victor Wemby.
- 43:46Speaker 4: The media wants to give it to him. It's his year.
- 43:48Speaker 5: All he has to do is play 70 games and
- 43:50Speaker 5: get the stats. Everybody else has won one. SGA has
- 43:53Speaker 5: won a couple. Everyone else has won one or more.
- 43:55Speaker 5: It's destiny for him this year if he stays healthy.
- 43:58Speaker 4: Your MVP?
- 43:59Speaker 2: Luka Doncic, because it's a narrative award. LeBron leaves and
- 44:02Speaker 2: Luka steps up his game. I think they're going to
- 44:04Speaker 2: be better without LeBron milling around the team. And Luka,
- 44:07Speaker 2: we've seen him win with nobody, Paul.
- 44:08Speaker 4: He does have an opportunity.
- 44:09Speaker 2: Yeah, he's gone well over 50 wins with the worst teams.
- 44:12Speaker 4: All right, I'll go first. Our NBA Finals prediction. I'm
- 44:15Speaker 4: going 76ers. Over Oklahoma City in full seven games. Oh, wow.
- 44:20Speaker 4: I'm taking your Sixers before you can take your Sixers, Perloff. Hijacked.
- 44:25Speaker 2: I'm going a little more obvious. I'm going to Oklahoma
- 44:27Speaker 2: City Thunder. In fact, if they were healthy, if Jalen
- 44:29Speaker 2: Williams was healthy last year, they would have won last year.
- 44:31Speaker 3: True.
- 44:32Speaker 2: They're the best team in the NBA.
- 44:33Speaker 5: All right, coming up next, constructive criticism and, oh, Noah
- 44:37Speaker 5: Eagle will be joining us from San Antonio, getting you
- 44:39Speaker 5: ready for the NBA season.
- 44:40Speaker 2: Stick around.
- 44:41Speaker 4: Not so fast.
- 44:44Speaker 2: I think we have a big debate going on Luka Doncic.
- 44:46Speaker 2: How good are the Lakers? I think with Luka playing well, healthy,
- 44:49Speaker 2: and in good shape, they're going to be fine.
- 44:50Speaker 4: And my Sixers now. They're my Sixers.
- 44:52Speaker 2: Yeah, you can have them. Think that team's going to
- 44:55Speaker 2: stay healthy?
- 44:56Speaker 4: Come on.
- 44:57Speaker 2: Welcome back to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's
- 44:59Speaker 2: Paul Paps. So we did something last week called Done
- 45:02Speaker 2: or Done Done. Was that the name of the segment?
- 45:04Speaker 4: Yeah, because the team could be done. Like, oh, man,
- 45:06Speaker 4: they're done.
- 45:07Speaker 5: But you have to declare them done done, which means,
- 45:09Speaker 5: by definition, they cannot and will not make the NFL playoffs.
- 45:13Speaker 2: Okay, let's start. We're declaring the Chargers and the Commanders done-done.
- 45:18Speaker 5: Now, last week we were in between on the Chargers
- 45:20Speaker 5: because you said Chargers were done-done, and I said just done,
- 45:24Speaker 5: so that puts them in that purgatory area. I am
- 45:26Speaker 5: now ready to agree with you that the Chargers are
- 45:28Speaker 5: done-done and not making the playoffs.
- 45:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know about the Commanders because I think
- 45:32Speaker 2: anybody who can play any form of organized football could
- 45:35Speaker 2: win the NFC East. So I don't think the Commanders
- 45:37Speaker 2: make the done-done list.
- 45:38Speaker 5: No, I don't think the Commanders make that list because
- 45:41Speaker 5: of the— not so much them— but the division around them.
- 45:44Speaker 5: It's still a weirdly winnable, but I don't think they're
- 45:47Speaker 5: a threatening team in any way, and the second half
- 45:49Speaker 5: last night didn't help a lot.
- 45:50Speaker 2: No, they seem disorganized, too. That really bothers me. Sometimes
- 45:53Speaker 2: key plays are false starts, or they barely got the
- 45:56Speaker 2: play in. Okay, LA Rams belong on a done-done list?
- 46:00Speaker 5: I'm surprised we even put them on this list. I
- 46:02Speaker 5: know at 2-4 you should be on the list. Is
- 46:05Speaker 5: this insulting for them to even be on the list?
- 46:07Speaker 2: Yes, I think so, but there are a lot of problems.
- 46:10Speaker 2: Devontae Adams out for several weeks with a hamstring. What
- 46:13Speaker 2: is it, a ruptured hamstring?
- 46:15Speaker 4: Yeah, that sounds like there's strained, sprained hamstrings. torn, ruptured.
- 46:20Speaker 4: Ruptured is the one you don't want.
- 46:21Speaker 2: But the defensive line is also huge problems there. Think
- 46:24Speaker 2: about it. Aaron Donald came to play with guys like
- 46:27Speaker 2: Puna Ford and Miles Garrett, and none of them are
- 46:29Speaker 2: on the field. It's just Aaron Donald. That's really disappointing.
- 46:32Speaker 2: But no way are they done done. And they are
- 46:34Speaker 2: going to get some guys back.
- 46:35Speaker 5: And we're not those hot take guys that declare a
- 46:37Speaker 5: team's done, and then when they win three in a row, say, up.
- 46:39Speaker 4: Hey, look, they're back. Once you're done, done, you're done.
- 46:41Speaker 2: Would you use a draft pick to trade for a receiver, say,
- 46:43Speaker 2: Brian Thomas Jr. from Jacksonville or Rashad Bateman in Baltimore?
- 46:46Speaker 4: Absolutely, because that's what the Rams do.
- 46:48Speaker 5: They only value draft picks in, like, The one draft
- 46:51Speaker 5: pick they had this year, they even used that on
- 46:53Speaker 5: the future. They used their draft picks for now, or
- 46:56Speaker 5: they went with Ty Simpson out of Alabama.
- 46:58Speaker 4: They don't look at the draft like normal teams look
- 47:00Speaker 4: at the draft.
- 47:01Speaker 2: The Eagles, obviously we just learned that Jalen Hurts is
- 47:05Speaker 2: likely out for the season with a blood clot issue.
- 47:06Speaker 2: Are they done done?
- 47:08Speaker 5: I think they're too decent of a team generally with
- 47:10Speaker 5: the talent on both sides of the ball. Tanner McKee
- 47:13Speaker 5: I don't think will be bad. I think he'll be
- 47:14Speaker 5: probably like a C-plus, B-minus type quarterback for them. He's
- 47:17Speaker 5: been there a while, Tanner McKee. More of a drop-back guy.
- 47:20Speaker 5: I think they're going to be, I wouldn't say fine
- 47:22Speaker 5: because that's too complimentary, but that division. I think the
- 47:25Speaker 5: team they've got to get past is the New York Giants.
- 47:26Speaker 5: They've been the most consistent, weirdly.
- 47:28Speaker 2: Well, actually, I pulled up the odds. The Cowboys are
- 47:30Speaker 2: the slight favorite, and the Giants right behind them. The
- 47:33Speaker 2: Eagles are last. That is just done, done. Put it
- 47:35Speaker 2: in all caps. Stamp it on there. Really? Yeah. I mean,
- 47:39Speaker 2: I don't care. Even if Jalen Hurts was still the quarterback,
- 47:41Speaker 2: when Lane Johnson retired, they cannot win without their all-world
- 47:45Speaker 2: right tackle.
- 47:46Speaker 5: I think your done, done is based on them being
- 47:47Speaker 5: a threatening team. You're saying even if they somehow weirdly
- 47:50Speaker 5: snuck in the playoffs.
- 47:51Speaker 2: I don't think that's it. I don't think that's in
- 47:52Speaker 2: play anymore. First of all, there's so many injuries. Right
- 47:56Speaker 2: now their defense is keeping them in games. But Tanner
- 47:58Speaker 2: McKee was fine. If you want to argue against me,
- 48:02Speaker 2: you're right. The division is terrible, but I don't know
- 48:04Speaker 2: how Tanner McKee does anything.
- 48:05Speaker 5: I'd like to take a 20 on this division. The
- 48:07Speaker 5: Cowboys are going to regret this season more than any season.
- 48:10Speaker 5: I know the Cowboys won seven each of the past
- 48:12Speaker 5: two years, and I know they don't have a great defense,
- 48:15Speaker 5: but they should have offensive their way to a 500
- 48:18Speaker 5: record at this point. And if they somehow don't make
- 48:20Speaker 5: the playoffs... in this weak, you know what, division.
- 48:22Speaker 2: Oh, man.
- 48:23Speaker 4: It's embarrassing.
- 48:24Speaker 2: You think Brian Schottenheimer gets fired if they don't make
- 48:26Speaker 2: the playoffs? I do, because that means they have five wins.
- 48:29Speaker 4: I probably would, because Jerry Jones does not seem like
- 48:32Speaker 4: a patient guy under normal circumstances. I don't think he's
- 48:34Speaker 4: getting any younger. I just did the math.
- 48:36Speaker 5: He has no relationship with Brian Schottenheimer to keep him.
- 48:39Speaker 5: The thing about what they do, the problem with Dallas is,
- 48:42Speaker 5: I know we can do a big deep dive, is
- 48:43Speaker 5: they hire people who could be bossed around. They don't
- 48:46Speaker 5: hire alpha dogs since they got Parcells in there.
- 48:48Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good point. You know, Jerry Jones has
- 48:50Speaker 2: not won another Bill Parcells. I heard a rumor that
- 48:53Speaker 2: he brought in Parcells so he could get a new
- 48:55Speaker 2: stadium built and win some games. And then the second
- 48:57Speaker 2: the stadium was greenlit, he said goodbye. Okay, lastly on
- 49:01Speaker 2: this list, our producer Scott Messina, not us, put the
- 49:04Speaker 2: Raiders as a potential Dun Dun team. Weren't they the
- 49:07Speaker 2: feel-good team of the league just two weeks ago?
- 49:09Speaker 4: They almost won the game the other day.
- 49:11Speaker 5: I know they've lost a few in a row, but
- 49:13Speaker 5: Dundon is in that division, it's tough.
- 49:16Speaker 4: I would say I can't go Dundon on them.
- 49:18Speaker 5: I will say, though, that Kirk Cousins in about three
- 49:21Speaker 5: weeks or four weeks will be Dundon because once they're
- 49:25Speaker 5: out of striking distance of the playoffs, they're going to
- 49:27Speaker 5: pivot to Mendoza around week 10.
- 49:30Speaker 2: What about a trade? How about Kirk Cousins going somewhere
- 49:32Speaker 2: else who needs a quarterback?
- 49:33Speaker 4: Well, you need an injury. What you need is an injury.
- 49:36Speaker 4: But I love this. Actually, this is a great take
- 49:38Speaker 4: by you.
- 49:38Speaker 5: If some contender... somehow needs a quarterback three weeks from now.
- 49:42Speaker 5: Let's say Josh Allen got banged up hard.
- 49:44Speaker 2: Well, you know what? What about the Eagles?
- 49:48Speaker 4: Man, like a one-year, a nine-game rental?
- 49:51Speaker 2: Yeah, a nine-game rental. It rarely works, but we've seen
- 49:55Speaker 2: teams try it before to switch gears mid-season.
- 49:57Speaker 4: There's a Kohl's in Philadelphia. Kirk Cousins would look great.
- 50:00Speaker 2: There are many Kohl's. All right, I don't know if
- 50:02Speaker 2: we really add to the list. The Chargers are definitely done-done,
- 50:05Speaker 2: but everyone else is sort of hanging around for at
- 50:07Speaker 2: least one of us.
- 50:08Speaker 4: We had Saints in Purgatory last year. Saints are.
- 50:10Speaker 2: They won, though.
- 50:12Speaker 3: Right.
- 50:12Speaker 2: Same thing. They have such an easy division.
- 50:14Speaker 3: Right.
- 50:14Speaker 5: You can not like the Saints, but agree they're not
- 50:16Speaker 5: done done because the division's easy.
- 50:19Speaker 2: Yeah, you're probably right. All right. Well, hopefully the Eagles
- 50:23Speaker 2: are not done, done, done, which means not just done,
- 50:25Speaker 2: but done for the next several years because it is
- 50:28Speaker 2: not going well. All right. Coming up next, we're going
- 50:30Speaker 2: to go to constructive criticism. You know what, BYU fans,
- 50:34Speaker 2: leave my guy Paul Paps alone. We're going to get
- 50:36Speaker 2: in that not so fast.
- 50:37Speaker 4: Bring it, BYU. We're all friends here. I love BYU.
- 50:41Speaker 2: I do, yeah. We love BYU. Provo is gorgeous.
- 50:44Speaker 3: Gorgeous.
- 50:45Speaker 2: Can't really drink there.
- 50:46Speaker 4: No, you can if you find some people, you know.
- 50:49Speaker 4: You've got to find a hookup.
- 50:50Speaker 2: You've got to. Welcome back to Not So Fast. Andrew Perloff,
- 50:53Speaker 2: Paul Paps, NBC Sports Now. And Peacock. All right, Paul,
- 50:57Speaker 2: I feel like there's still fallout from last night's Monday
- 51:00Speaker 2: Night Football game. The Niners hold off the Commanders. I'm
- 51:03Speaker 2: not so sure about the Niners. The Commanders are what
- 51:06Speaker 2: they are.
- 51:07Speaker 5: I think, I got to tell you, I'm quite surprised
- 51:08Speaker 5: that you don't think last night was a good night
- 51:11Speaker 5: for an injured, banged up 49ers team.
- 51:14Speaker 4: They're at home.
- 51:14Speaker 2: They should blow out the Commanders. They should have won
- 51:16Speaker 2: that game 38-7.
- 51:17Speaker 5: It did feel like a step off the gas at halftime.
- 51:20Speaker 5: At halftime, they're probably calling, making plans, getting ready for
- 51:23Speaker 5: a late dinner.
- 51:24Speaker 2: But don't you think it was more when Mike Evans
- 51:26Speaker 2: got hurt, the Niners lost their offensive mojo?
- 51:28Speaker 5: But he's not hurt-hurt, he's hurt. He's not out six
- 51:32Speaker 5: to eight weeks hurt. McCaffrey's healthy. I think the bigger
- 51:35Speaker 5: picture is how Brock Purdy is playing relaxes everything. When
- 51:38Speaker 5: he got that big contract a couple years ago, people
- 51:40Speaker 5: were like, you're going to give this guy 255 or
- 51:43Speaker 5: whatever it was? And nobody asks that anymore because the
- 51:46Speaker 5: guy doesn't get sacked. He's been sacked six times in
- 51:49Speaker 5: six games.
- 51:50Speaker 4: I think that's one a game. I just did the math.
- 51:52Speaker 4: That's light. He barely gets touched.
- 51:54Speaker 5: I think they're in a fantastic situation, and the benefit
- 51:57Speaker 5: for them is the Rams are struggling, and the Seahawks
- 52:00Speaker 5: look like they can't run the ball, and that doesn't look.
- 52:02Speaker 4: Fixable, those two things.
- 52:04Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I agree with that.
- 52:05Speaker 5: And I'm not saying the 49ers are great. I'm saying
- 52:07Speaker 5: by default they could have home field advantage.
- 52:10Speaker 2: Is Purdy, I don't want to say system quarterback, but
- 52:12Speaker 2: he's great when those pieces around him are great. He
- 52:15Speaker 2: needs McCaffrey to run the ball. He needs a big
- 52:18Speaker 2: target like Mike Evans. He needs Kittle healthy. If all
- 52:21Speaker 2: those guys go away, Purdy's not the kind of quarterback
- 52:23Speaker 2: who can do it alone. He's not Josh Allen.
- 52:24Speaker 5: He does not wow you like Josh Allen with the physicality.
- 52:27Speaker 5: He does have a little wiggle. I wouldn't say he's
- 52:28Speaker 5: a great runner. It's more like he gets downfield. He's
- 52:31Speaker 5: not scared to take on a little contact. So Brock Purdy, again,
- 52:34Speaker 5: he's not the roll left, throw right, 80 yards across
- 52:38Speaker 5: his body guy. He's not a highlight guy, but he's
- 52:40Speaker 5: got a little bit of that, I hate to say
- 52:42Speaker 5: gritty and guttiness, but that gritty toughness. And he's got
- 52:45Speaker 5: all the tools to like an 8. He's not a
- 52:48Speaker 5: 10 anywhere.
- 52:48Speaker 2: And he knows when to run. Yes. He's very frustrating
- 52:51Speaker 2: if you're playing against him or you bat against him
- 52:53Speaker 2: because he will always get the first down with his legs.
- 52:56Speaker 2: I just think, Paul, six games. It's a long season.
- 52:58Speaker 2: And you see the injuries sort of mounting up for them.
- 53:01Speaker 2: And if he doesn't have the pieces around him, forget MVP.
- 53:03Speaker 3: Sure.
- 53:04Speaker 2: I think they could be in much different shape come December.
- 53:06Speaker 5: You mentioned the Rams trading for someone. How about the
- 53:08Speaker 5: 49ers making a trade for the trade deadline? Defender or
- 53:11Speaker 5: wide receiver?
- 53:12Speaker 2: Definitely not defense. They have all these young guys who
- 53:15Speaker 2: have stepped up and will be fine. Even without Nick Bosa,
- 53:18Speaker 2: they look dominant.
- 53:19Speaker 4: But they need at least one receiver.
- 53:21Speaker 2: Yeah. No.
- 53:22Speaker 3: Okay.
- 53:22Speaker 2: So they're getting Stribling, the rookie, back. They're getting Debo.
- 53:26Speaker 2: Debo is coming back. Mike Evans, I worry about. Christian
- 53:30Speaker 2: Kirk is coming back.
- 53:31Speaker 5: But again, we talk about playing while you're hot or
- 53:35Speaker 5: making a move while you're hot.
- 53:36Speaker 4: They didn't expect to be 6-0. It's almost like.
- 53:39Speaker 5: A baseball team being above 500 right around the trade deadline,
- 53:42Speaker 5: let's press the gas.
- 53:43Speaker 2: So the guy whose name is out there is Brian
- 53:45Speaker 2: Thomas Jr. Jacksonville had an amazing rookie season, but he
- 53:49Speaker 2: had seven drops as a rookie, 10 last year, and
- 53:51Speaker 2: he already has three this year. Are you sure that's
- 53:53Speaker 2: the element you want to add? The other thing about
- 53:55Speaker 2: these Niners, maybe this is me just speculating, they seem
- 53:59Speaker 2: very cohesive. They're all buddies, especially the defense. The defense
- 54:03Speaker 2: is really unified. I don't know if you want to
- 54:05Speaker 2: bring in an outside guy.
- 54:06Speaker 4: No, I know that.
- 54:07Speaker 5: You don't want to bring in a guy who drops passes.
- 54:09Speaker 5: But Houston brought in Marvin Harrison Jr., who had done nothing.
- 54:13Speaker 5: But they said to themselves, we've got to spark this
- 54:15Speaker 5: up a little bit because we're having a bad September.
- 54:17Speaker 4: Sometimes a move for the move's sake is the move.
- 54:19Speaker 2: But if you're 6-0, why would you make a move
- 54:21Speaker 2: for the move's sake?
- 54:22Speaker 4: Because, I would say the injuries.
- 54:24Speaker 5: Because the age of Debo and the age of Mike Evans,
- 54:26Speaker 5: one of the two probably will not be available in
- 54:28Speaker 5: deep January.
- 54:29Speaker 2: But what is the issue we always talk about with
- 54:31Speaker 2: the Niners? The big issue. Probably the primary issue coming
- 54:34Speaker 2: into every season.
- 54:35Speaker 4: The electric plant next door?
- 54:38Speaker 2: You got me. No, Christian McCaffrey's usage. Yes. We always say,
- 54:41Speaker 2: do not wear down your bell cow because he is
- 54:43Speaker 2: the best player on this team.
- 54:44Speaker 4: And I like the draft pick of Kalen Black out
- 54:47Speaker 4: of Indiana.
- 54:47Speaker 2: Where was he last night, though?
- 54:48Speaker 5: He only carried the ball about five times. I thought
- 54:50Speaker 5: they would get more. All right, let's go to... Fun
- 54:52Speaker 5: game last night. Let's get to a little constructive criticism.
- 54:55Speaker 5: Your feedback, your thoughts, your commentary. Heard from a lot
- 54:58Speaker 5: of BYU fans. We'll get to you in a second.
- 55:00Speaker 4: Here we go, Pearl. Constructive criticism time.
- 55:02Speaker 2: Let's go with it.
- 55:08Speaker 4: Oh, this is the little boy who won, who's grandmother.
- 55:11Speaker 2: Oh, look at that.
- 55:12Speaker 4: This is from Dan Casper. We know this guy. He's
- 55:15Speaker 4: a fan of the show.
- 55:15Speaker 5: Hey, Paul Paps, thanks for the shout out on Not
- 55:17Speaker 5: So Fast about my kiddo Hudson and his World Series tickets.
- 55:21Speaker 4: What a week this guy's having.
- 55:22Speaker 5: I mean, which is bigger to him, being on Not
- 55:24Speaker 5: So Fast, featured, or going to the World Series?
- 55:27Speaker 4: Your thoughts?
- 55:28Speaker 2: It depends if the Brewers win. No, obviously going to
- 55:30Speaker 2: the World Series. But first of all, he's still smiling.
- 55:34Speaker 2: It's unbelievable. He has not stopped smiling since those tickets
- 55:37Speaker 2: came through. He almost makes me want to root for
- 55:39Speaker 2: the Brewers. Can you picture his face if they lose?
- 55:41Speaker 4: I can't believe you even brought that up. You can't
- 55:43Speaker 4: say that. The little guy's watching.
- 55:45Speaker 2: One team's got to lose, Paul.
- 55:47Speaker 4: You go to school, eat your vegetables, the brewers are
- 55:49Speaker 4: going to be fine.
- 55:50Speaker 5: Don't listen to that mean Mr. Andrew Perloff there. All right,
- 55:53Speaker 5: let's get to the next one.
- 55:54Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 55:56Speaker 5: Okay, now Joe Montana walked out. There was a Ring
- 55:58Speaker 5: of Honor thing going on, so all the Niners were back.
- 56:01Speaker 5: Joe Montana did a quick interview before the game, and
- 56:03Speaker 5: he had this shirt on, which was, you know, I
- 56:06Speaker 5: would say questionable, risque, whatever word you want to use.
- 56:10Speaker 5: And I tweeted out, Amongst the great things about being
- 56:13Speaker 5: Joe Montana is you can wear whatever the hell shirt
- 56:15Speaker 5: you want to wear because you're Joe Montana, you got
- 56:16Speaker 5: four rings.
- 56:17Speaker 2: Absolutely. But this might be fashionable and we might not
- 56:20Speaker 2: know about it. You know how Hawaiian shirts came back
- 56:22Speaker 2: about eight years ago? This might be cool and it's
- 56:26Speaker 2: just above our head.
- 56:27Speaker 3: Right.
- 56:27Speaker 4: Like a Bay Area thing? Yeah.
- 56:29Speaker 2: Kind of California.
- 56:31Speaker 5: From Eric Jensen, when people refer to you as Joe Montana,
- 56:34Speaker 5: one word, you can wear any damn thing you want.
- 56:36Speaker 5: That's correct. That's actually correct. Good job by you, Eric.
- 56:39Speaker 5: And let's get one more from Will Dowdy. This one
- 56:42Speaker 5: was definitely not recommended by a stylist. That sounds like
- 56:45Speaker 5: he's making fun of Joe Montana. We don't do that.
- 56:46Speaker 2: No, that's not allowed. But I've got to tell you,
- 56:49Speaker 2: they did a team photo. I think they were honoring
- 56:51Speaker 2: Keenan Turner last night. And the retired players have a
- 56:54Speaker 2: wide range of looks. Some guys let it go. Some
- 56:56Speaker 2: guys are still in great shape and wearing sleeveless denim cutoffs.
- 57:00Speaker 2: Other guys just look like they haven't played football in
- 57:03Speaker 2: 100 years.
- 57:04Speaker 5: Best name in NFL history, Joe Montana.
- 57:06Speaker 4: I mean, it's just perfect. It sounds like a name.
- 57:08Speaker 2: Joe Cool.
- 57:09Speaker 4: Joe Cool.
- 57:09Speaker 5: You give a quarterback in a movie. Like Johnny Utah
- 57:12Speaker 5: was based off Joe Montana.
- 57:14Speaker 3: Of course.
- 57:14Speaker 2: You know, Paul, you with this alliterate, or I don't
- 57:17Speaker 2: know what you call it when something actually does what
- 57:19Speaker 2: it sounds like. You thought Mike Quick was the greatest
- 57:21Speaker 2: wide receiver because his name was Quick.
- 57:23Speaker 4: It's a great name.
- 57:23Speaker 2: What was the linebacker for Ohio State who had a name?
- 57:27Speaker 5: There was Andy Katzenroyer, but you're thinking Michael Stonebreaker, the
- 57:30Speaker 5: middle linebacker for Notre Dame.
- 57:31Speaker 4: Good pull by you.
- 57:32Speaker 2: Yeah, you wanted to vote for him in the Heisman
- 57:33Speaker 2: because you loved his name so much. So, of course,
- 57:35Speaker 2: you're going to go, is that the ultimate name? But
- 57:38Speaker 2: to me, it also depends on what you do. Tom
- 57:40Speaker 2: Brady is not a name unto itself, but now it
- 57:42Speaker 2: evokes so much just by saying Tom Brady.
- 57:44Speaker 5: Yeah, Tom Brady sounds like my accountant, Tom Brady. He
- 57:47Speaker 5: really knows what he's talking about. How about best sports
- 57:49Speaker 5: name for what you do, Usain Bolt?
- 57:52Speaker 2: That's pretty good.
- 57:53Speaker 4: You couldn't design a better name than Usain Bolt.
- 57:55Speaker 2: No, I'm trying to think. If your last name was
- 57:58Speaker 2: Duncan Basketball.
- 57:59Speaker 4: There's... Tim Duncan, but he didn't dunk that much. He
- 58:01Speaker 4: was more of a crisp, one-handed runner.
- 58:03Speaker 2: Yeah, or a bank shot. Wow. All right, a couple.
- 58:08Speaker 5: More NFL questions before we get done. The Rams have issues.
- 58:11Speaker 5: We're not talking about the Seattle Seahawks. Seattle's on national
- 58:14Speaker 5: TV coming up next week. Do they trade for a
- 58:16Speaker 5: running back, or do they hold Sir.
- 58:19Speaker 4: I know. You've been jonesing on this one. Does Seattle
- 58:21Speaker 4: trade for a running back?
- 58:22Speaker 2: That'd be admitting an offseason mistake because they let Kenneth
- 58:26Speaker 2: Walker go. They actually paid wide receiver Rashid Shahid. If
- 58:30Speaker 2: they traded for a running back now, it almost puts
- 58:32Speaker 2: too much of a spotlight on probably the biggest mistake
- 58:35Speaker 2: of the offseason, letting Ken Walker go. to Kansas City. Now,
- 58:38Speaker 2: Jadarian Price is coming back. Zach Charbonnet is coming back
- 58:41Speaker 2: off an injury. So I think Seattle's okay in that department,
- 58:45Speaker 2: but man, are they regretting letting Walker out the door.
- 58:47Speaker 5: Okay, what about a couple other teams? Like, let's go
- 58:49Speaker 5: to the NFC North. Chicago Bears, good offense. Caleb Williams back.
- 58:53Speaker 5: They're good on offense. They have almost no threatening people
- 58:56Speaker 5: on defense.
- 58:57Speaker 4: Yeah, what happened?
- 58:57Speaker 2: I thought the defense was going to be improved.
- 58:59Speaker 5: No, they lost a few guys last year, and they
- 59:01Speaker 5: lived off takeaways last year. Do you see any defensive
- 59:04Speaker 5: players in the play? Like years ago, Khalil Mack was
- 59:06Speaker 5: a trade bait.
- 59:07Speaker 2: Wow, yeah, you know, obviously a team that is struggling
- 59:10Speaker 2: is the Philadelphia Eagles. They actually have a couple defensive
- 59:14Speaker 2: linemen that might be extra. If you need a tackle,
- 59:16Speaker 2: they got one.
- 59:17Speaker 5: And the Eagles, you still think, are selling a little bit,
- 59:19Speaker 5: or started, not... Not a fire sale, but an early
- 59:22Speaker 5: fire sale with Cam Juergens.
- 59:23Speaker 2: Right. Former Georgia pass rusher Nolan Smith can be had.
- 59:26Speaker 2: But here's the thing, come trade deadline, especially with a
- 59:29Speaker 2: pass rusher, nobody's training a guy who's really playing well.
- 59:32Speaker 2: What about Max Crosby?
- 59:34Speaker 5: The Max Crosby situation, I still, from year to year,
- 59:37Speaker 5: he was traded. He was going to Baltimore, then somehow
- 59:40Speaker 5: he didn't pass his physical. I still think that's fishy.
- 59:42Speaker 2: Well, they limit his number of snaps, which to me
- 59:44Speaker 2: says that he's not 100% healthy. Now, I don't think
- 59:47Speaker 2: that's necessarily why Baltimore said no to the trade.
- 59:49Speaker 3: Right.
- 59:50Speaker 2: But if you're a team that needs a pass rusher,
- 59:53Speaker 2: Max Crosby will teach the young guys how to win. Well,
- 59:56Speaker 2: not necessarily win, but he'll teach them how to play hard.
- 59:59Speaker 4: How to play well on a team that doesn't win.
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:01Speaker 5: That's the thing you've got to learn out there. All right,
- 1:00:03Speaker 5: it's time for the feel good. Let's get you out
- 1:00:04Speaker 5: of here feeling good today.
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: Ready to go? Here's our feel good on Not So
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: Fast for a Tuesday. Look at these guys. Tampa Bay Rays. Yee-haw.
- 1:00:16Speaker 5: A little pop fly, anticlimactic, and we're going to the
- 1:00:20Speaker 5: World Series. Now, Perloff, the Rays have not been around
- 1:00:23Speaker 5: that long, but they used to be the Tampa Bay
- 1:00:25Speaker 5: Devil Rays. When they were the Devil Rays, they didn't
- 1:00:28Speaker 5: make the playoffs even once in their history.
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: They removed the Devil. They got the Devil out of town.
- 1:00:33Speaker 5: Next thing you know, they make the World Series the
- 1:00:35Speaker 5: following year, and they've made the playoffs, I think, nine
- 1:00:38Speaker 5: or ten times, including this year.
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: Coincidence? Not so fast.
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: So when they played the Phillies in 07 with Evan Longoria,
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: that was just the Rays?
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: Yes, just the Rays.
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: Okay. I think that is the key to their entire success.
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: Not analytics, not the players. It's the fact that they
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: got devil out of their name.
- 1:00:55Speaker 5: But then the Duke Blue Devils never got rid of
- 1:00:57Speaker 5: the devil and dominated for decades.
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: Your thoughts?
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: Yeah, but the last couple of years they've come up
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: short ball.
- 1:01:02Speaker 4: Should they remove the devil and start playing some big basketball?
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: Right. I mean, if they keep going out on the
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: Elite Eight, then I think they should consider that. There
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: you go.
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: There you go.
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: Anything else football-wise before we wrap up? Not so fast.
- 1:01:12Speaker 5: Baseball-wise, we got basketball tonight. Are your 76ers, here's what
- 1:01:16Speaker 5: I think is going to happen. I think your 76ers
- 1:01:18Speaker 5: are going to win big tonight, set expectations way too high,
- 1:01:22Speaker 5: then lose like two of the next three and everyone
- 1:01:24Speaker 5: jumps off the bandwagon.
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: I see it more as an early season dominance and
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: then late season injuries.
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: No.
- 1:01:30Speaker 5: They're going to win tonight and then go on a
- 1:01:32Speaker 5: little bit of a spill and everyone's going to get
- 1:01:34Speaker 5: off the bandwagon.
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:01:35Speaker 5: Don't forget, tune in to the Dan Patch Show tomorrow
- 1:01:37Speaker 5: right here on NBC Sports. Then come hang with us
- 1:01:39Speaker 5: on Not So Fast. Enjoy the basketball at NBC. Come
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: hang with us after.
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: Take it easy.
