- 1:27Speaker 7: Chip Howard Sports Talk here on a Monday afternoon on
- 1:31Speaker 7: the Zone eleven fifty AM ninety three point seven FM.
- 1:34Speaker 7: Caleb Rapley here filling in for Chip on this Monday
- 1:38Speaker 7: edition of the show. Gonna have Rusty Berson with me
- 1:42Speaker 7: in the second hour at five o'clock. The Aggie historian
- 1:45Speaker 7: and author. Chip will be back next Monday, August third,
- 1:50Speaker 7: the return of Sir Howard himself, so get excited for that.
- 1:54Speaker 7: We're actually going to hear from Chip here in this
- 1:58Speaker 7: first hour of the show. At four fifteen, I'm gonna
- 2:01Speaker 7: play his interview from earlier this morning. He talked to
- 2:04Speaker 7: Kendall Berna about Shark Week over on the Discovery Channel,
- 2:08Speaker 7: so stay tuned for that. About four fifteen, we'll get
- 2:11Speaker 7: into that. We're also going to hear from what the
- 2:16Speaker 7: head coach of the Mississippi State Bulldogs had to say
- 2:18Speaker 7: at SEC Media Days last week, Jeff Levy going into
- 2:22Speaker 7: i believe, his second year with Mississippi State. So we'll
- 2:24Speaker 7: hear from that later in the hour, and like I said,
- 2:27Speaker 7: Rusty will join us at five o'clock. Caleb Rapley here
- 2:31Speaker 7: guest hosting got some headlines from around the world of sports,
- 2:34Speaker 7: starting with the MLB. The Houston Astros General manager Dana
- 2:39Speaker 7: Brown reiterated once again on the Astros pregame radio show
- 2:44Speaker 7: yesterday that quote, we would anticipate that we're going to
- 2:48Speaker 7: be buyers. The division is wide open, the wild card
- 2:51Speaker 7: is wide open. There's some parody there. There's a lot
- 2:53Speaker 7: of teams bunched up. I think the team that gets
- 2:55Speaker 7: hot is going to be the team that takes the run.
- 2:58Speaker 7: So the Astros to be buyers at the trade deadline,
- 3:02Speaker 7: which is something that has been in question a lot
- 3:05Speaker 7: this season. It was a really rough start for the Astros.
- 3:09Speaker 7: I think the most they were under five hundred was
- 3:11Speaker 7: eleven games back when they were twenty and thirty one.
- 3:14Speaker 7: I think that was back in June or May. It
- 3:17Speaker 7: was a really rough start. We thought that they were
- 3:19Speaker 7: going to be sellers. But even then, Dana Brown said
- 3:22Speaker 7: that they are going to try to add at the deadline,
- 3:26Speaker 7: and I think that's partly because his job might be
- 3:29Speaker 7: on the line if the Astros missed the playoffs again,
- 3:32Speaker 7: I wouldn't be surprised to see him get let go,
- 3:36Speaker 7: but the Astros have called their way back. They are
- 3:38Speaker 7: fifty two and fifty five, just had their five game
- 3:41Speaker 7: winning streak snapped last night by the White Sox. They
- 3:46Speaker 7: are starting a road series with the Angels tonight, and
- 3:50Speaker 7: I believe that's gonna be here on the zone at
- 3:55Speaker 7: eight ten, I think is when our pregame coverage starts,
- 3:58Speaker 7: so we will have that for you later tonight. Astros
- 4:03Speaker 7: and Angels out in La as the Astros try to
- 4:07Speaker 7: claw their way up into a wild card spot. They
- 4:10Speaker 7: are two games out of the playoffs at the moment,
- 4:12Speaker 7: the Cleveland Guardians holding the final wild card spot at
- 4:16Speaker 7: fifty four and fifty three. But the Astros have a
- 4:20Speaker 7: lot of needs if they are going to be buyers
- 4:23Speaker 7: at the deadline. And again, that deadline is only a
- 4:25Speaker 7: week from today, August third, the same Monday that Chip
- 4:29Speaker 7: will be returning, so he'll have a lot to talk about,
- 4:31Speaker 7: I'm sure, and they're going to be looking for. I
- 4:34Speaker 7: think the primary concern needs to be a left handed
- 4:38Speaker 7: hitting outfielder. The Astros outfield has been pretty much the
- 4:43Speaker 7: worst in the league offensively anyway. Defensively, I think they've
- 4:47Speaker 7: been pretty solid, but they have not had a whole
- 4:50Speaker 7: lot of production at the plate from the three outfield
- 4:53Speaker 7: spots outside of when Jordan plays left field, which doesn't
- 4:57Speaker 7: happen very often, and I personally don't want that to
- 4:59Speaker 7: happen ever, because he's the only consistent hitter we've had
- 5:03Speaker 7: this year, so keeping him healthy needs to be priority
- 5:06Speaker 7: number one, and the way you do that is by
- 5:07Speaker 7: going and getting another outfielder that can actually hit. La
- 5:10Speaker 7: Mottway Junior has been okay, Taylor Tremmeel has been great
- 5:14Speaker 7: at times, but there has not been a consistent hitter
- 5:17Speaker 7: in any of the three outfield spots.
- 5:20Speaker 3: I love cam Smith.
- 5:22Speaker 7: I think that he will be great one day, but
- 5:24Speaker 7: he's still very young and still trying to learn, and
- 5:28Speaker 7: he is a right handed hitter, and we never have
- 5:30Speaker 7: enough lefty bats. So a guy like Jake McCarthy is
- 5:34Speaker 7: my personal favorite, that my personal number one that I
- 5:37Speaker 7: want them to go after. He's having a career year
- 5:40Speaker 7: with the Rockies right now and very speedy, so you're
- 5:44Speaker 7: not giving up anything on the defensive side. But he's
- 5:46Speaker 7: one of the few guys in MLB that I think
- 5:49Speaker 7: he's still hitting three hundred.
- 5:50Speaker 3: He was the other day when I looked so He's
- 5:52Speaker 3: my number one want on my board.
- 5:56Speaker 7: Mickey Moniac also a Rocky Dalton Varshow or Hazus Sanchez
- 6:00Speaker 7: on the Blue Jays are also names to watch. With
- 6:04Speaker 7: the Blue Jays really kind of a crazy collapse after
- 6:09Speaker 7: their World Series run last year. They're ten games below
- 6:12Speaker 7: five hundred, fourteen and a half games back of the
- 6:16Speaker 7: Rays in the AL East, five and a half out
- 6:18Speaker 7: of a wild card spot, so they're looking to be sellers.
- 6:21Speaker 7: It would be very interesting if the Astros reacquired Jesus Sanchez,
- 6:24Speaker 7: who spent the second half of last season with the squad,
- 6:29Speaker 7: but a left handed hitting outfielder number one priority for
- 6:33Speaker 7: Dana Brown obviously pitching. Everybody always needs pitching if they
- 6:37Speaker 7: want to contend. But you know, we'll see if that's
- 6:42Speaker 7: if that's possible. The Red Sox reportedly made a play
- 6:48Speaker 7: to try to acquire shortstop Jeremy Payna and were shut
- 6:51Speaker 7: down immediately. According to Ari Alexander, so Paanya is off
- 6:56Speaker 7: the board, which is interesting. I think, being as close
- 7:01Speaker 7: to the playoffs as we are right now, it's the
- 7:03Speaker 7: right move. But if we have a little bit of
- 7:06Speaker 7: a collapse here in the next week, I don't see
- 7:10Speaker 7: a world where we signed Jeremy Panya to an extension,
- 7:13Speaker 7: So I would rather if we're a bad team, I'd
- 7:16Speaker 7: much rather trade him and get some prospects out of
- 7:18Speaker 7: it then just let him walk. Something similar to what
- 7:21Speaker 7: happened with Kyle Tucker, I think would be okay with
- 7:24Speaker 7: me getting a big name prospect and also some major
- 7:27Speaker 7: league ready players. When we traded Kyle Tucker the year
- 7:30Speaker 7: before his contract ran up, we got Esak Pretas, who
- 7:34Speaker 7: has been a big contributor for us in these the
- 7:36Speaker 7: last two seasons. Hayden Westnski, who hasn't contributed much, but
- 7:41Speaker 7: that's been more to injury than anything else, and then
- 7:44Speaker 7: Cam Smith, who is a very promising young hitter. So
- 7:47Speaker 7: if we get a similar return to that with Penya,
- 7:51Speaker 7: then I would be okay with them making that move.
- 7:53Speaker 3: But they do not seem very keen to do that
- 7:55Speaker 3: right now, so we'll see.
- 7:58Speaker 7: Speaking of Astro's Lance mccullor's junior has been released by
- 8:02Speaker 7: the Milwaukee Brewers after the Astros traded him to Milwaukee
- 8:09Speaker 7: along with Colton Gordon in what was pretty much a
- 8:12Speaker 7: salary dump. The Astros retained most of the contract, but
- 8:15Speaker 7: the Brewers did take on two point five million dollars.
- 8:18Speaker 7: Mccullor's was set to be a free agent at the
- 8:20Speaker 7: end of the season anyway, so the Brewers not really
- 8:24Speaker 7: wanting to deal with him, they designated him for assignment
- 8:27Speaker 7: yesterday and then announced that they are officially releasing him today,
- 8:32Speaker 7: so he will be a free agent. He will probably
- 8:35Speaker 7: have to sign a minor league deal with the club
- 8:37Speaker 7: if he wants to stay in professional baseball, perhaps with
- 8:41Speaker 7: the Astros, which would be interesting. Wouldn't hate that. Mccullor's
- 8:44Speaker 7: has said that he does care about that team. That's
- 8:49Speaker 7: part of why he waived his no trade clause, according
- 8:52Speaker 7: to Brian McTaggart, is that he does care about the
- 8:56Speaker 7: city of Houston and the Astros franchise. So I would
- 8:59Speaker 7: be perfectly okay with bringing him back in a minor
- 9:02Speaker 7: league on a minor league deal, because I love Lance mcculors.
- 9:05Speaker 7: It's just been very, very sad the way his career
- 9:08Speaker 7: has turned out after being a really big contributor for
- 9:11Speaker 7: us early in his career, being a big part of
- 9:14Speaker 7: both of our World Series runs. He signed that extension
- 9:18Speaker 7: back in March of twenty twenty one. It was a
- 9:20Speaker 7: five year eighty five million dollar deal the twenty twenty
- 9:23Speaker 7: two through twenty twenty six seasons, and he's barely played
- 9:27Speaker 7: in that time, and when he has, it's been a
- 9:29Speaker 7: pretty rough performance. I think all of his pitches have
- 9:32Speaker 7: been about three miles per hour below where they used
- 9:35Speaker 7: to be. The last two seasons, he's thrown ninety nine
- 9:40Speaker 7: and a third innings a six five two ERA, so
- 9:43Speaker 7: not really a usable arm, unfortunately. But it was a
- 9:51Speaker 7: very professional move for him to understand the situation he's
- 9:54Speaker 7: in and let that deal go through. So I would
- 9:58Speaker 7: like for us to go ahead and sign him to
- 10:00Speaker 7: a minor league deal if he decides to retire at
- 10:03Speaker 7: this at the end of this season, at least he
- 10:06Speaker 7: retires as a member of the Astros organization. In the
- 10:10Speaker 7: Al East, the Atlanta Braves have activated Ronald Acunya Junior
- 10:14Speaker 7: from the IL. He was on the ten day injured
- 10:17Speaker 7: list due to a hamstring strain that was back in
- 10:20Speaker 7: early June that they actually put that put him on
- 10:23Speaker 7: the IL, so about a month and a half ago.
- 10:26Speaker 8: Now.
- 10:29Speaker 7: Ronald has always been one of those guys that has
- 10:32Speaker 7: been similar like a Mike Trout, very electric when he's
- 10:34Speaker 7: on the field, but has had a very tough time
- 10:37Speaker 7: staying on the field. That was his second sin on
- 10:40Speaker 7: the injured list this season with the same hamstring injury,
- 10:45Speaker 7: so hopefully with him staying out that full month and
- 10:49Speaker 7: a half, he's fully recovered from that. The Braves still
- 10:54Speaker 7: in a position to be one of the best teams
- 10:56Speaker 7: in the National League, leading the ALE East at the
- 10:59Speaker 7: moment five and a half games above the Atlanta Braves,
- 11:02Speaker 7: but they are the worst division leader right now, with
- 11:05Speaker 7: the Dodgers at sixty seven thirty nine and the Brewers
- 11:09Speaker 7: at sixty six and thirty nine, and those two teams
- 11:13Speaker 7: have been the class of the MLB for pretty much
- 11:16Speaker 7: the entire season, so it's gonna be tough for anybody
- 11:19Speaker 7: to run them down. Athletics catcher Shay Langeliers suffers a
- 11:24Speaker 7: torn meniscus, which will likely keep him out the rest
- 11:28Speaker 7: of the season.
- 11:30Speaker 3: He has yet to decide.
- 11:31Speaker 7: Whether or not he will undergo surgery. If he does,
- 11:35Speaker 7: then that's at least a six to eight week recovery time,
- 11:39Speaker 7: and I don't think the A's would bother bringing him
- 11:43Speaker 7: back for the last few games of the season, just
- 11:45Speaker 7: because there's no reason to risk his health. As you
- 11:49Speaker 7: know they're pretty much completely out of the playoff race
- 11:51Speaker 7: at this point, nine games behind the Rangers in the
- 11:53Speaker 7: Al West, so no reason to rush him back. It's
- 12:00Speaker 7: very unfortunate. Again, anytime there's an injury to a player
- 12:03Speaker 7: like this, it's very unfortunate. Landeliers had been having a
- 12:06Speaker 7: career year, hitting two sixty three with twenty three homers.
- 12:10Speaker 7: One of the best hitting catchers in baseball this season,
- 12:13Speaker 7: so hopefully he comes back stronger next year. In the NFL,
- 12:20Speaker 7: it is almost time for preseason camp to begin, and
- 12:25Speaker 7: the last remaining unsigned first round pick from the twenty
- 12:29Speaker 7: twenty six draft. It was announced yesterday I believe that
- 12:33Speaker 7: Ty Simpson, the Rams number thirteen pick, agreed to terms
- 12:37Speaker 7: on his rookie contract, a four year, twenty five point
- 12:40Speaker 7: four million dollars deal with a fifth year option that
- 12:44Speaker 7: includes a fourteen point nine to four million dollars signing bonus.
- 12:49Speaker 7: Some other contract news, Jacoby Brissette of the Arizona Cardinals
- 12:54Speaker 7: reworked his contract a fifteen point five million dollar contract
- 12:58Speaker 7: for this season. That's just the garan teed money, though
- 13:00Speaker 7: he has a chance to make up to twenty one
- 13:03Speaker 7: million dollars with incentives so no more years on his deal.
- 13:07Speaker 7: He will be a free agent after the season, but
- 13:09Speaker 7: a large increase of what he was scheduled to make,
- 13:12Speaker 7: which was just four point eight eight million dollars base salary,
- 13:17Speaker 7: but only one point five million dollars if that was guaranteed.
- 13:19Speaker 7: So definitely a big win for Jacoby Brissett. He was
- 13:24Speaker 7: really good for that for the Cardinals last year once
- 13:28Speaker 7: they decided to bench Kyler Murray. Brissette made twelve starts
- 13:31Speaker 7: through for about thirty three hundred yards, twenty three touchdowns,
- 13:35Speaker 7: just eight interceptions, so very solid player. The Cardinals looked
- 13:41Speaker 7: to be, you know, one of the worst teams in
- 13:44Speaker 7: that division, if not the entire league they're in, you know,
- 13:47Speaker 7: one of the tougher divisions in the NFL, the NFC
- 13:50Speaker 7: West with the forty nine Ers, Seahawks, and Rams, so
- 13:55Speaker 7: not a whole lot of opportunity for them to compete in.
- 13:56Speaker 3: Twenty twenty six.
- 13:58Speaker 7: But Brissett doing his best to make the most of
- 14:01Speaker 7: the opportunities that he has.
- 14:03Speaker 3: You know, he's been around for a while.
- 14:05Speaker 7: The first time we heard the name Jacoby Brissett was
- 14:07Speaker 7: back when Tom Brady was suspended for Spygate or the
- 14:12Speaker 7: fleet gate. I can't remember which one of the gates
- 14:13Speaker 7: it was, but that was the first time we'd heard
- 14:16Speaker 7: Jacoby Brissett when he got to make those first four starts,
- 14:19Speaker 7: and he was pretty solid. Then he's bounced around a
- 14:22Speaker 7: bit of a journeyman quarterback, but has always been a
- 14:25Speaker 7: pretty solid option. And good for him for getting this
- 14:28Speaker 7: deal done and making the Cardinals actually pay him, even
- 14:32Speaker 7: though he will mostly just be a tank commander. But
- 14:36Speaker 7: good for him for sure. When we come back, we
- 14:38Speaker 7: will hear Chips interview with Kendall Berna. But right now
- 14:42Speaker 7: it's time for this from Chad Jones Law.
- 14:46Speaker 9: I'm Chad Jones. We know sports injuries hurt, and so
- 14:49Speaker 9: do injuries from car recks. But you didn't sign up
- 14:51Speaker 9: to be in a car wreck with someone who wasn't
- 14:53Speaker 9: paying attention. It was their fault and now you're left
- 14:56Speaker 9: to deal with the consequences. You need to see a doctor,
- 14:58Speaker 9: and you're missing work. Chad Jones Law can help. We've
- 15:01Speaker 9: been helping our neighbors for more than two decades. Stop

- 15:16Speaker 5: It's Texaggs Live. Brought to you by David Garters Jewelers.
- 15:19Speaker 10: David Edmund said this comment to you, David Nunya last week.
- 15:23Speaker 11: He said that you would be happy if you never
- 15:25Speaker 11: visited Okay, see again when.
- 15:27Speaker 12: We go on trips now, Like I'm looking forward to
- 15:29Speaker 12: going to Norman for the game, right, Like that's different,
- 15:34Speaker 12: but we're talking about like visiting a city. Look, I
- 15:37Speaker 12: love living in College Station.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:40Speaker 12: When I tell people that, they're like really, like what
- 15:42Speaker 12: is her to do? I was like, what the hell
- 15:43Speaker 12: do you do in your big city?
- 15:45Speaker 8: Like do you like go dancing?
- 15:46Speaker 13: Like what do you do? Like?
- 15:49Speaker 12: My life is simple. I go to work, I go
- 15:51Speaker 12: to church, I go to the gym, I go to
- 15:53Speaker 12: my kids activities.
- 15:54Speaker 3: That's my life.
- 15:54Speaker 12: I can do that in Alaska. I can do that anywhere.
- 15:57Speaker 12: So Oklahoma City is a place that if I probably
- 15:59Speaker 12: lived there, I'd probably like it. When we talk about visiting.
- 16:02Speaker 12: I want something different, Okay, I want the beach. I
- 16:06Speaker 12: want the culture of Nashville, right Like I grew up
- 16:11Speaker 12: in Houston.
- 16:11Speaker 3: I don't know if I love.
- 16:13Speaker 5: Tech SAgs live weekdays from eight to eleven on the Zone.
- 16:23Speaker 14: To put my.
- 16:29Speaker 11: Brook it out at the gym to fit my nd
- 16:38Speaker 11: makes this ship.
- 16:39Speaker 7: Welcome back to Chip Howard Sports Talk here on the
- 16:41Speaker 7: Zone eleven fifty A ninety three point seven FM. Caleb
- 16:44Speaker 7: Brapley here filling in for Chip today and we will
- 16:48Speaker 7: actually have a little bit of Chip Howard for you
- 16:51Speaker 7: out there, as he did an interview earlier this morning
- 16:55Speaker 7: that I'm going to play right now. Kendall Berna, she
- 16:58Speaker 7: is doing a show tonight night, part of Shark Week
- 17:01Speaker 7: where they're talking about Mako Sharks. Here is Chips interview
- 17:05Speaker 7: with Kendall.
- 17:06Speaker 8: Kendall, how are you good?
- 17:09Speaker 13: Thank you so much for having me on.
- 17:10Speaker 6: Yeah, thank you very much. It's always great to catch up.
- 17:14Speaker 6: I started last night. It's my favorite week of the year.
- 17:17Speaker 6: And let's talk about tonight's show if we can. When
- 17:24Speaker 6: were you guys taping this in California?
- 17:28Speaker 14: So we filmed this year in May. Actually we've filmed
- 17:32Speaker 14: a similar Maco.
- 17:33Speaker 13: Show the last four years, yep, and it's.
- 17:36Speaker 14: Always early May, which is actually a very quick turnaround
- 17:40Speaker 14: to edit for a July Shark Week. But this year
- 17:45Speaker 14: in particular, the makos showed up way earlier than they
- 17:50Speaker 14: usually do because we were having a marine heat wave.
- 17:52Speaker 14: So very often in May we can't push it any
- 17:55Speaker 14: further because you just don't have time to edit. So
- 17:58Speaker 14: we kind of have to film it in May to
- 18:00Speaker 14: give us two months to edit it. But very often
- 18:04Speaker 14: that's still a little too cold for macOS. But this
- 18:07Speaker 14: year we had a marine heat wave and it was hotter,
- 18:09Speaker 14: and so it was like the best year forgetting macOS
- 18:15Speaker 14: because they just aren't on the production you know, you
- 18:17Speaker 14: try to put them on the production timeline or like
- 18:19Speaker 14: lunches at twelve and they're like, sorry, I didn't get
- 18:23Speaker 14: the email, But this year they got the email.
- 18:26Speaker 6: It seems like that great whites prefer cooler water. Am
- 18:31Speaker 6: I right about that? And you're telling me that macOS
- 18:34Speaker 6: prefer maybe it to be a little warmer.
- 18:37Speaker 13: Yeah, So macOS and white sharks overlap here.
- 18:40Speaker 14: I have seen macOS and white sharks together, but macOS
- 18:45Speaker 14: like waters above sixty one degrees par and height, so
- 18:49Speaker 14: they will come up here in summer, but then they'll be,
- 18:54Speaker 14: you know, somewhere like Cabo, where we filmed the other
- 18:59Speaker 14: part of the Sho show.
- 19:00Speaker 13: In the more winter months.
- 19:03Speaker 14: So yeah, so May is kind of a borderline month
- 19:06Speaker 14: where where the macOS aren't super abundant yet, except this
- 19:09Speaker 14: year they were.
- 19:10Speaker 6: So they traveled between that corridor, generally speaking on that side.
- 19:18Speaker 14: Yeah. So, yep, they the Pacific, they go, Yeah, they
- 19:22Speaker 14: go down Mexico and then up towards towards US.
- 19:25Speaker 6: They exist in a lot of different areas of the world.
- 19:28Speaker 6: We're not but we're just talking about a certain area,
- 19:31Speaker 6: are we not.
- 19:33Speaker 14: Yeah, So macOS exist all over the world. They have
- 19:36Speaker 14: a large geographic range, and there's also long fin macOS
- 19:39Speaker 14: and short fin macOS. We know a lot more about
- 19:42Speaker 14: about short fin macOS, but we were studying these macOS
- 19:46Speaker 14: in particular because this area of California.
- 19:49Speaker 13: Just holds such an abundance of prey.
- 19:52Speaker 14: Because most macOS are eating like Humboldt squid, they're eating
- 19:57Speaker 14: large fish, tuna. We think the maco's here also eating
- 20:01Speaker 14: marine mammals because we have large sea lion and seal
- 20:05Speaker 14: populations here, especially off the California Channel islands.
- 20:10Speaker 6: And again, great whites love seals. macOS, is that surprising
- 20:19Speaker 6: that they have that there are large enough fish to
- 20:22Speaker 6: eat those sea lions?
- 20:23Speaker 15: Or not.
- 20:25Speaker 14: Yeah, so you know, they I don't think it's their
- 20:28Speaker 14: main food because that's not what they're eating around the world.
- 20:31Speaker 14: But we do know, like we've looked at seals and
- 20:34Speaker 14: sea lions that have very distinct maco bite patterns on them.
- 20:38Speaker 14: You can see the bite pattern of a maco versus
- 20:41Speaker 14: a white shark or very different.
- 20:43Speaker 13: They have very different teeth. macOS are more like.
- 20:47Speaker 14: I sometimes picture you know when you go to the
- 20:49Speaker 14: arcade and you have that little claw that you go
- 20:52Speaker 14: over to the pick the stuffed animal up with.
- 20:56Speaker 13: That's what maco teeth look like.
- 20:58Speaker 14: And they've kind of shake it in the same way
- 21:00Speaker 14: that you would the vending machine.
- 21:02Speaker 13: Claw to try to to try to knock it off.
- 21:04Speaker 14: So yeah, they just capture prey in a very different
- 21:07Speaker 14: way than than white sharks.
- 21:08Speaker 13: Do they really have to kind of like thrash it around.
- 21:11Speaker 14: Yes, but yeah, we we have observed that macOS will
- 21:16Speaker 14: will attack a marine mammal.
- 21:18Speaker 6: So we don't hear very seldom, I believe, of maco
- 21:26Speaker 6: shark bites like we do great whites or bull sharks,
- 21:30Speaker 6: maybe even tiger sharks.
- 21:33Speaker 14: Why is that because macOS aren't really in the areas
- 21:37Speaker 14: that humans.
- 21:38Speaker 6: Overlook with so they're deeper.
- 21:41Speaker 14: Great, Yeah, they're deeper, they're more pelagic, so great. Whites
- 21:45Speaker 14: love a coastal area.
- 21:47Speaker 13: So that's why, you know, in the summer months.
- 21:51Speaker 14: Right now in California, especially through up to like October,
- 21:55Speaker 14: this is kind of going to be our peak white
- 21:57Speaker 14: shark juveniles, especially in the shallows, whereas macOS are in
- 22:02Speaker 14: deeper waters that people really just aren't and so that's
- 22:05Speaker 14: why they're also not very well known.
- 22:08Speaker 13: And I think this.
- 22:09Speaker 14: Is one of the reasons that this show has gone
- 22:12Speaker 14: for four years is because it's such a treat to
- 22:14Speaker 14: get to see mako footage, just because it's something that
- 22:17Speaker 14: otherwise you don't get to see.
- 22:19Speaker 6: So what have you learned about the species over these
- 22:22Speaker 6: last four years that you've that you've studied them for
- 22:25Speaker 6: the program?
- 22:26Speaker 13: Gosh, everything, you know.
- 22:28Speaker 14: I really didn't know much about macOS before this, truthfully,
- 22:32Speaker 14: and now I think they're the coolest shark out there
- 22:35Speaker 14: and they're so underrated. They're the fastest shark in the ocean. Yes,
- 22:39Speaker 14: they're warm blooded like a white shark. I think they
- 22:43Speaker 14: could Yeah, they can charge a specie, you know, if
- 22:46Speaker 14: they're going after prey, they can charge it really quickly.
- 22:49Speaker 13: I think their teeth are.
- 22:50Speaker 14: So crazy looking, their bodies are kind of crazy looking,
- 22:54Speaker 14: and they're like these little torpedoes. They're just a really
- 22:57Speaker 14: really cool species that not that many people are ever researching.
- 23:01Speaker 14: So that's why it's it feels very special to get
- 23:04Speaker 14: to them, to study them and show them to people.
- 23:07Speaker 6: So when you heard that there may been one pushing
- 23:10Speaker 6: fifteen feet, what was your initial reaction?
- 23:14Speaker 13: Probably excitement. I mean, I believe it.
- 23:17Speaker 14: We've seen some really big sharks out here, and again,
- 23:21Speaker 14: like I said, because they're not really being you know
- 23:24Speaker 14: that that well studied and well funded.
- 23:29Speaker 13: We don't have all that much research.
- 23:31Speaker 14: You know, it tends to be like hearsay from buy
- 23:35Speaker 14: catch from fishermen because they are they are in by
- 23:38Speaker 14: catch quite often, but very often it's the smaller ones
- 23:41Speaker 14: that are. So, you know, we've seen some huge sharks,
- 23:44Speaker 14: and we don't always get to to measure them accurately.
- 23:48Speaker 14: That's always a challenge, even on Shark Week, is like
- 23:51Speaker 14: how do you get a shark's exact measurements unless you're
- 23:54Speaker 14: actually catching it and.
- 23:56Speaker 13: Bringing it to the boat. But we're trying on Shark
- 23:58Speaker 13: Week to not actually catch the sharks.
- 24:01Speaker 14: We like the interactions to Like when you're normally researching
- 24:04Speaker 14: a shark, you're catching it, bringing it to the boat,
- 24:06Speaker 14: measuring it, putting a tag on it. For Shark Week,
- 24:09Speaker 14: we're trying to do more in water interactions with them
- 24:11Speaker 14: and not hook them, so that it's really just a
- 24:14Speaker 14: peaceful interaction for the sharks. And the sharks aren't harmed
- 24:18Speaker 14: in that sense in any way. Speaking of I think
- 24:21Speaker 14: it harms them normally.
- 24:22Speaker 6: But speaking of tagging, have there been macOS that have
- 24:26Speaker 6: been tagged?
- 24:28Speaker 13: Certainly?
- 24:28Speaker 14: And Keith Poe, who we work with on this show,
- 24:32Speaker 14: has tagged many macOS and many great whites, And.
- 24:36Speaker 13: I think he's.
- 24:37Speaker 14: A guy who spends most of his life out on
- 24:39Speaker 14: these waters, yeah, tagging sharks, and I think he I
- 24:42Speaker 14: don't want to speak for him, but I think he
- 24:44Speaker 14: might even think macOS are cooler than white sharks.
- 24:47Speaker 6: Kendall Berna studies makos and sharks, and you can see

- 29:40Speaker 7: Welcome back to Chip Howard Sports Talk here on the
- 29:42Speaker 7: Zone eleven fifty am ninety three point seven f m
- 29:46Speaker 7: Monday afternoon. Here on the Zone, Caleb Rapoley filling in
- 29:50Speaker 7: for Chip the last week of summer guest hosts.
- 29:52Speaker 3: Chip will be back Monday.
- 29:54Speaker 7: August third, and right now, I want to get into
- 29:57Speaker 7: some NASCAR talk here. I know that NASCAR is a
- 30:01Speaker 7: sport that you know, might have kind of fallen by
- 30:04Speaker 7: the wayside as far as fans go. But if you've
- 30:08Speaker 7: been listening to the Zone this summer. You've heard me
- 30:10Speaker 7: talk about NASCAR plenty. I think it is starting to
- 30:12Speaker 7: make a little bit of a comeback, which I love
- 30:14Speaker 7: to see.
- 30:15Speaker 3: I'm a big motorsport fan. Yesterday was one.
- 30:18Speaker 7: Of the crown jewel events in the NASCAR Cup Series
- 30:23Speaker 7: as they raced the Brickyard four hundred at Indianapolis Motor Speedway,
- 30:28Speaker 7: and the winner was part time racer in the number
- 30:33Speaker 7: sixty seven car, Corey heim. Heim isn't even a true
- 30:38Speaker 7: rookie this year. With the way the NASCAR, the NASCAR
- 30:43Speaker 7: Series works, you have to be a full time driver
- 30:47Speaker 7: to be eligible for points, and Corey heim is not
- 30:52Speaker 7: a full time driver this year. He has raced I
- 30:55Speaker 7: want to say, maybe eight or nine starts this year
- 31:00Speaker 7: in the number sixty seven car for twenty three eleven racing. Yes,
- 31:03Speaker 7: that's a lot of numbers. But he's had two wins
- 31:06Speaker 7: this year already. The first of those was at Naval
- 31:11Speaker 7: Base Coronado, which was the first time NASCAR head race
- 31:14Speaker 7: there ever. That's a road course in San Diego. That
- 31:19Speaker 7: was back in June, I think, yeah, June twenty first
- 31:22Speaker 7: he got that win, which was his first career win,
- 31:25Speaker 7: and then yesterday at Indy got his second career win
- 31:30Speaker 7: and again as a part time driver. This is not
- 31:32Speaker 7: something that happens very often. I think it's the first
- 31:36Speaker 7: time in like forty years. I want to say is
- 31:38Speaker 7: what I read that at part time driver won multiple
- 31:40Speaker 7: races in the same season, so him is poised to
- 31:45Speaker 7: be a full time driver next year. I believe he's
- 31:49Speaker 7: replacing Riley Herbst in the number thirty five for twenty
- 31:54Speaker 7: three eleven Racing, and that's the third car for that team.
- 31:59Speaker 3: Bubba Wallace and Tyler Reddick.
- 32:00Speaker 7: The other two drivers for twenty three eleven, both established
- 32:04Speaker 7: veterans in the NASCAR Cup Series. Reddick actually won the
- 32:07Speaker 7: first three races of this season, so herbs has been
- 32:12Speaker 7: the weakest of those three drivers for sure. Both Reddick
- 32:16Speaker 7: and Wallace are currently in the Chase, which is the
- 32:20Speaker 7: NASCAR playoff format. For those that don't know, the top
- 32:23Speaker 7: sixteen drivers and the point standing at the end of
- 32:25Speaker 7: the year or at the end of the regular season
- 32:29Speaker 7: make the Chase, and then those are the only sixteen
- 32:32Speaker 7: drivers eligible for the championship. So right now, twenty three
- 32:36Speaker 7: eleven has two of their three cars in the Chase.
- 32:39Speaker 7: In second place is Tyler Reddick and fourteenth place is
- 32:42Speaker 7: Bubba Wallace and then their third car, Riley Herps is
- 32:46Speaker 7: down in twenty fifth place.
- 32:48Speaker 3: So Heim this year, in the.
- 32:52Speaker 7: Few races that he's raced, I think actually has scored
- 32:56Speaker 7: more points or close to the same amount of points
- 32:58Speaker 7: as Herbs, who has been racing a full season, which
- 33:01Speaker 7: is kind of unheard of and also a bit of
- 33:05Speaker 7: an indictment on why Riley Herbs will be losing his
- 33:08Speaker 7: seat next year. I think he already has a ride.
- 33:10Speaker 7: I think he's driving the eighty four is what I saw.
- 33:13Speaker 7: But you know, Corey Heim, he's almost definitely gonna be
- 33:19Speaker 7: the Rookie of the Year next year. I really don't know
- 33:22Speaker 7: how many other rookies there's gonna be, just because with
- 33:25Speaker 7: the way the way motorsports works, it's very different from
- 33:29Speaker 7: you know, football, baseball, basketball, where there's rookies every year.
- 33:33Speaker 7: If the seat doesn't open up, there's not gonna be
- 33:35Speaker 7: any rookies. So there's already one that's guaranteed or two
- 33:39Speaker 7: that are guaranteed. With the number twenty one, Wood Brothers
- 33:42Speaker 7: Racing bringing in Jesse Love replacing Josh Berry, and then
- 33:46Speaker 7: Corey Heim will be replacing Riley Herps in the number
- 33:49Speaker 7: thirty five car, But other than that, those are those
- 33:52Speaker 7: are the only two cars right now that we'll have
- 33:56Speaker 7: a rookie driver, and both of those rookies are very
- 34:00Speaker 7: highly touted, very solid drivers, So it will be an
- 34:06Speaker 7: interesting race between those two guys to see who ends
- 34:08Speaker 7: up being the Rookie of the Year. But him has
- 34:10Speaker 7: already shown that he has the talent necessary to win
- 34:14Speaker 7: at this level. Jesse Love has been a very very
- 34:17Speaker 7: good driver in the O'Reilly Series, which is the second
- 34:20Speaker 7: series of NASCAR, basically Triple A if you want to relate.
- 34:23Speaker 3: It to baseball.
- 34:25Speaker 7: But a lot of times guys that have lots of
- 34:29Speaker 7: success at the O'Reilly Series level or at the truck
- 34:31Speaker 7: series level, they make it up to Cup Series and
- 34:34Speaker 7: they're not the same guy we saw it with somebody
- 34:37Speaker 7: like Noah Gragson, who was very successful in the O'Reilly
- 34:40Speaker 7: Series with Junior Motorsports. The last few years with the
- 34:44Speaker 7: number four car in the Cup Series, it's been pretty mediocre, So.
- 34:50Speaker 3: You really never know what's gonna happen with these guys.
- 34:52Speaker 7: But Corey Heim already looks to be one of the
- 34:54Speaker 7: most talented drivers in the sport, only fifteen career Cup
- 34:58Speaker 7: Series starts and now two wins.
- 35:02Speaker 3: Very impressive from him.
- 35:04Speaker 7: This race also marked the end of the NASCAR in
- 35:07Speaker 7: season tournament, so there were the top thirty two drivers
- 35:12Speaker 7: in the standings were eligible for the tournament, and they
- 35:17Speaker 7: just they were matched. The way it worked, you're matched
- 35:19Speaker 7: up against one driver each race and whoever finishes higher
- 35:22Speaker 7: moves on. So the winner ended up being Todd Gilliland,
- 35:27Speaker 7: who I think the highest finish that he had in
- 35:30Speaker 7: these races that were during this tournament was eighteenth. So
- 35:35Speaker 7: he really got lucky a bunch of times because he
- 35:38Speaker 7: never had a very high finish, but he always finished
- 35:40Speaker 7: higher than the man he was matched up against. He
- 35:42Speaker 7: finished two places ahead of Ryan Blaney that yesterday to
- 35:47Speaker 7: win the million dollar prize. So congratulations to the gillionaire
- 35:51Speaker 7: Todd Gilliland with a big check coming his way. And
- 35:56Speaker 7: Ryan Blaney's probably not too torn up about it. You know,
- 35:58Speaker 7: he's a Cup Series champion. He could probably find a
- 36:00Speaker 7: million dollars in couch change at Pinski Racing headquarters.
- 36:06Speaker 3: One of the top teams in the sport. Year after year,
- 36:11Speaker 3: the chase for the Cup.
- 36:13Speaker 7: It looks like it's gonna come down to the wire
- 36:15Speaker 7: between who will end up as the one seed. Denny
- 36:17Speaker 7: Hamlin and Tyler Reddick have been going back and forth
- 36:21Speaker 7: this year. Hamlin does have a pretty sizable lead right
- 36:23Speaker 7: now with eighty four points, and you know, probably the
- 36:28Speaker 7: best of the past generation of drivers that's still in
- 36:32Speaker 7: the sport, you know, guys like Hamlin's contemporary of guys
- 36:40Speaker 7: like Jimmy Johnson, Kyle Busch who we unfortunately lost this season,
- 36:46Speaker 7: but he's kind of the only one left that's still
- 36:48Speaker 7: competing at a high level. Brad Brad Keselowski has is
- 36:51Speaker 7: still a full time driver, but he has not been
- 36:53Speaker 7: the same guy since he left the number two car
- 36:56Speaker 7: of Penske and went to RFK Racing, which he is
- 36:59Speaker 7: a art owner in. That's the k at the end
- 37:03Speaker 7: of RFK for those who are wondering, it's Ralsh Finway
- 37:06Speaker 7: Kesalowski Racing. But since he's been an owner driver, Brad
- 37:11Speaker 7: k really hasn't had as much success. He's nineteenth right
- 37:13Speaker 7: now in the standings, three spots out of the chase,
- 37:17Speaker 7: so Hamlin is, and Hamlin has announced that he probably
- 37:20Speaker 7: will retire at the end of next season. I think
- 37:23Speaker 7: if he wins the championship this year, he probably will
- 37:26Speaker 7: just go ahead and ride off into the sunset, I
- 37:27Speaker 7: would imagine, because he has never won a championship and
- 37:31Speaker 7: he's probably one of the best. He's one of the
- 37:33Speaker 7: best drivers in NASCAR history to never win a championship,
- 37:35Speaker 7: similar to a guy like Mark Martin, longtime driver, longtime
- 37:41Speaker 7: top of the sport race winner, just never won the
- 37:44Speaker 7: big one. So I would be really happy for Denny
- 37:48Speaker 7: if he could get that done this year, and.
- 37:49Speaker 3: He probably would just go ahead and retire.
- 37:51Speaker 7: But he's announced that he probably will retire regardless at
- 37:55Speaker 7: the end of next season. Like I said, Tyler Reddick
- 37:58Speaker 7: in second place the forty five car for twenty three
- 38:01Speaker 7: eleven Racing, which again Denny Hamlin part owner. So there's
- 38:06Speaker 7: a lot of drivers in NASCAR who are also owners.
- 38:09Speaker 7: The funny thing about Hamlin is that he's a driver
- 38:11Speaker 7: for Joe Gibbs Racing in the number eleven car, but
- 38:13Speaker 7: an owner for twenty three eleven Racing, where he is
- 38:17Speaker 7: co owners co owners with basketball legend Michael Jordan. And
- 38:21Speaker 7: that's a whole other topic to get into that I've
- 38:23Speaker 7: talked about some this summer. So if you're interested in that,
- 38:27Speaker 7: look up the twenty three eleven lawsuit against NASCAR that
- 38:29Speaker 7: was that was a lot of drama that went down
- 38:31Speaker 7: and ended up a lot of positive gain for the
- 38:36Speaker 7: owners of NASCAR teams.
- 38:37Speaker 3: That's going to make it, you know, a little easier for.
- 38:40Speaker 7: Them to continue to own teams, which is good to
- 38:44Speaker 7: just for the sport in general. Right now in third
- 38:46Speaker 7: place is Ryan Blaney, the number twelve car for Pinske,
- 38:51Speaker 7: and the fourth place driver and the final driver that
- 38:55Speaker 7: has clinched a chase spot so far is the number
- 38:58Speaker 7: fifty four car with Gibbs also Joe Gibbs Racing, Ty Gibbs,
- 39:02Speaker 7: the grandson of Joe Gibbs. So four cars have clinched
- 39:05Speaker 7: their spot. Next, the next four guys right now Carson
- 39:10Speaker 7: Hosavar in fifth place, number seventy seven car for Spire,
- 39:13Speaker 7: Chase Elliott, the number nine car for Hendrick Motorsports, Chase Briscoe,
- 39:18Speaker 7: the number nineteen for Joe Gibbs Racing, and Kyle Larson,
- 39:21Speaker 7: two time champion, number five car for Hendrick Motorsports.
- 39:25Speaker 3: All pretty near clinching.
- 39:26Speaker 7: I believe Josavar has had a He's been storming up
- 39:31Speaker 7: the standings this season. He just gained two spots with
- 39:37Speaker 7: his I think it was ninth place finish in the
- 39:40Speaker 7: Brickyard four hundred yesterday, so continues to climb up the leaderboard.
- 39:45Speaker 7: Very much in contention for the Chase for the Cup
- 39:49Speaker 7: and my favorite personal driver. So excited to see where
- 39:52Speaker 7: this season goes next on the docket for NASCAR.
- 39:58Speaker 3: After the Brickyard four hundred.
- 39:59Speaker 7: E Indie yesterday, they will take a week break and
- 40:04Speaker 7: then August ninth, they will be at Iowa Speedway for
- 40:09Speaker 7: the Iowa Korn three point fifty, which is probably the
- 40:12Speaker 7: best name of a race in NASCAR right now, just
- 40:15Speaker 7: being Iowa Korn.
- 40:17Speaker 3: That's a pretty solid sponsor. So excited for that.
- 40:21Speaker 7: I think it's one of the last races in the Chase. Yeah,
- 40:25Speaker 7: so there's four more races in the regular season and
- 40:27Speaker 7: then the Chase will start Sunday, September sixth, the Southern
- 40:31Speaker 7: five hundred in Darlington, another one of the crown jewel
- 40:34Speaker 7: races for NASCAR. With that, we're going to take another break.

- 41:45Speaker 21: Astros keep it close. Yesterday time things back up two times.
- 41:49Speaker 21: First was JP three getting a second home run of
- 41:51Speaker 21: the day for his eleventh of the season.
- 41:54Speaker 22: This Paul hit pretty well in the right center field.
- 41:57Speaker 3: That has a chance. Cheremyan's done it again.
- 42:00Speaker 1: What a run.
- 42:01Speaker 8: Jeremy peg is on.
- 42:03Speaker 22: He's accounted for both Astro's runs with home runs.
- 42:06Speaker 3: That's one of the right center work.
- 42:07Speaker 21: Tied in two, and Taylor Tremmell tied it up again
- 42:11Speaker 21: later in the fifth to keep it close.
- 42:13Speaker 8: Oh wow, that's cool. Is amazing?
- 42:14Speaker 22: This ball hit well. Taylor Trammelle trying to tie the game,
- 42:17Speaker 22: and he does. Taylor Chammelle with this port pop run
- 42:20Speaker 22: of the year, inspired by the Julia hit on the
- 42:24Speaker 22: sushi push pops. He pushes one out.
- 42:26Speaker 8: To right center. Trammell's got that sushi pop.
- 42:29Speaker 21: Astros were unable to complete the sweep of the White
- 42:31Speaker 21: Sox as things got way out of hand after the fifth,
- 42:33Speaker 21: falling to the Socks twelve to three. Astros start a
- 42:36Speaker 21: series with the Angels tonight at eight thirty five. I'm
- 42:39Speaker 21: Trevor Beck with your Astros Report.
- 42:41Speaker 4: Listen to the Houston Astros on his own thanks to
- 42:44Speaker 4: Kelly bird Doozer.
- 43:04Speaker 7: Welcome back, to Chip Howard Sports Talk here on the
- 43:06Speaker 7: Zone eleven fifty A ninety three points seven FM. Kayler
- 43:10Speaker 7: Rapley here on this Monday afternoon. The last week of
- 43:15Speaker 7: July is upon us, and this summer has absolutely flown by.
- 43:20Speaker 7: Last week was SEC Media Days as we come down
- 43:24Speaker 7: the final stretch of the college football offseason, and we're
- 43:29Speaker 7: going to hear what the head coach of the Mississippi
- 43:32Speaker 7: State Bulldogs, Jeff Levy, had to say at SEC Media Days.
- 43:36Speaker 7: Levy is going into his third season with Mississippi State.
- 43:43Speaker 7: Year one in twenty twenty four was really rough, two
- 43:46Speaker 7: and ten to eight, and conference play last year an
- 43:49Speaker 7: improvement five and seven in the regular season, getting one
- 43:53Speaker 7: conference win and almost two. They were right there almost
- 43:58Speaker 7: took down the Texas Longhorn, which would have been fantastic
- 44:02Speaker 7: for me and every other Eggie fan out there, but
- 44:04Speaker 7: unfortunately they did not get that win. But they did
- 44:07Speaker 7: go five and seven, one and seven in conference play,
- 44:10Speaker 7: and normally the threshold to be eligible for a bowl
- 44:15Speaker 7: is six wins, but every year sometimes there's a little
- 44:20Speaker 7: bit of differences on how many teams actually have six wins.
- 44:23Speaker 7: This year there weren't enough, so the Bulldogs were invited
- 44:27Speaker 7: to play in the Duke's Male Bowl and they lost
- 44:31Speaker 7: to Wake Forest forty three to twenty nine in that game.
- 44:34Speaker 7: So final record of five and eight, so it was
- 44:36Speaker 7: an improvement on last year. Leb be looking to lead
- 44:40Speaker 7: the Bulldogs to take another step this season. Let's hear
- 44:42Speaker 7: what he had to say at SEC Media Days last week.
- 44:46Speaker 23: Commissioner, thank you, it is it's a privilege to be
- 44:49Speaker 23: here SEC Media Days. You know, as I think about
- 44:53Speaker 23: year three for us, I think about taking the next step,
- 44:55Speaker 23: and that's that's what it's all about this fall. And
- 44:58Speaker 23: as we talk about taking the next step inside our program,
- 45:02Speaker 23: I think back to the beginning of January and where
- 45:06Speaker 23: everything started to give us the opportunity to go change
- 45:09Speaker 23: the outcome and do what we're trying to do this fall.
- 45:12Speaker 23: And as you think about January, probably the thing that
- 45:14Speaker 23: I'm most proud of since walking in the door and
- 45:17Speaker 23: Startville is the fact that we were able to retain
- 45:20Speaker 23: the way we retain this past portal window and the
- 45:24Speaker 23: three guys that are with me today a huge piece
- 45:26Speaker 23: of that, but a lot of layers inside our locker
- 45:29Speaker 23: room that chose to be a part of what we're
- 45:32Speaker 23: doing because there is there's great belief, there's great confidence,
- 45:35Speaker 23: there's great energy, focus and edge on going to chase
- 45:39Speaker 23: it and putting our best foot forward to get ready
- 45:41Speaker 23: to go win games. As we talked about retention, then
- 45:44Speaker 23: it was player acquisition. It was being able to go
- 45:46Speaker 23: address the needs that we had both lines of scrimmage
- 45:50Speaker 23: and in our secondary. We were able to get that
- 45:52Speaker 23: done and excited about those groups as we're now man
- 45:55Speaker 23: just two weeks away from being able to be back
- 45:57Speaker 23: on the grass and get ready to go to go practice.
- 46:01Speaker 23: Another big thing for us in the offseason was it
- 46:03Speaker 23: was staffing, and there's been a ton of talk about
- 46:06Speaker 23: bringing back Zach Barnett as our defensive coordinator. What he's
- 46:11Speaker 23: done for me and for us on that side of
- 46:13Speaker 23: the ball since January has been huge. His experience, the
- 46:18Speaker 23: play calling ability, and him being able to create stress
- 46:22Speaker 23: for the other side of the ball is something that
- 46:24Speaker 23: we needed in a great way. Alongside Matt brock cole
- 46:28Speaker 23: defensive coordinator and linebacker coach, another guy that again has
- 46:33Speaker 23: called defense in our league that has great experience. That
- 46:37Speaker 23: has been another great asset for us inside our walls
- 46:40Speaker 23: and then on the offensive side, adding over twenty five
- 46:43Speaker 23: years of experience from a coordinator standpoint with you look
- 46:48Speaker 23: at Philip Montgomery and you look at Kevin Johns, both
- 46:50Speaker 23: guys that have called plays for a really long time
- 46:53Speaker 23: have had a ton of success and bring an incredible
- 46:56Speaker 23: amount of experience to our room offensively, which has been great.
- 47:00Speaker 23: So we're gonna keep talking about it. We're two weeks away.
- 47:04Speaker 23: Great confidence and what we've got going inside our walls.
- 47:07Speaker 23: I think as you talk to our three guys that
- 47:09Speaker 23: are here today, man, they're gonna be a great voice
- 47:12Speaker 23: for us and the belief and the energy that's happening
- 47:15Speaker 23: inside our walls. So again, incredibly grateful to be here.
- 47:18Speaker 23: With that, I'll open it up.
- 47:20Speaker 8: Thank you, Coach Levy. If you have a question, raise
- 47:22Speaker 8: your hand. We'll get a microphone to you. We're gonna
- 47:24Speaker 8: start here Lauren here in the center aisle about halfway back.
- 47:30Speaker 10: Hey, coach Nick Lausa from wog and Athens, Georgia.
- 47:33Speaker 3: You've made it a priority on offense to win with speed.
- 47:35Speaker 6: Can you tell us a little bitt how Marquis Johnson
- 47:37Speaker 6: attributes to that methodology.
- 47:39Speaker 23: Yeah, Marquise is a guy that does He's got great
- 47:42Speaker 23: top end. He's a guy that can he can stretch
- 47:45Speaker 23: the field. What I'm excited about in that room is
- 47:47Speaker 23: the depth in that room. There's an incredible amount of
- 47:50Speaker 23: competition and that's gonna be fun to see sword out
- 47:53Speaker 23: through through fall camp. So got some real tools inside
- 47:57Speaker 23: that room where there will they'll be great competition.
- 48:00Speaker 8: Okay, we'll stay in the center. L Just over on
- 48:03Speaker 8: the other side.
- 48:04Speaker 24: Coach Hunter Dawkins the gazebo, zat super talking with Sippy News. Coach,
- 48:09Speaker 24: You're offensive line doesn't have a whole lot of experience,
- 48:11Speaker 24: but you, being a former offensive lineman, talk to me
- 48:14Speaker 24: about having a duel threat quarterback and what you're teaching
- 48:18Speaker 24: schemes or strategy for the offensive line.
- 48:20Speaker 23: Yeah, for us, you know, as we're building that offensive
- 48:25Speaker 23: line right now and continuing to develop it. As we
- 48:27Speaker 23: sit here today, we're in a much better spot than
- 48:30Speaker 23: we were a year ago. Today, we've got very capable
- 48:34Speaker 23: people inside that room. I was saying it earlier, but
- 48:38Speaker 23: we do. We've got six guys that I'm incredibly excited
- 48:41Speaker 23: about having the ability to go play winning football for us.
- 48:44Speaker 23: Being able to continue to develop the depth in that room, Man,
- 48:47Speaker 23: that's gonna be huge even the next two weeks and
- 48:50Speaker 23: then into fall camp, so that we do have the
- 48:52Speaker 23: depth that we need, We're gonna be able to do
- 48:54Speaker 23: it all up front, though, We've got to have great balance.
- 48:57Speaker 23: That's gonna be a huge part of our success.
- 49:00Speaker 8: Which we'll go down in front of me in section
- 49:03Speaker 8: third row.
- 49:04Speaker 10: Good afternoon, Coach Levy. I'm Jelina with Jelina Porta Communications.
- 49:07Speaker 10: It's nice to see you today. So you are going
- 49:09Speaker 10: into your third season with the Bulldogs. They say third
- 49:11Speaker 10: times to charms. So first things first, what gives you
- 49:14Speaker 10: the most confidence going into this year versus the past
- 49:16Speaker 10: two seasons? And just to the side, Mississippi as a whole,
- 49:20Speaker 10: as we know, has made a lot of national news lately.
- 49:22Speaker 10: So I just like you to shed some light on
- 49:25Speaker 10: what's so special about Starkville or stark Vegas as y'all
- 49:28Speaker 10: like to caud I hear, and you know why you
- 49:31Speaker 10: and your players enjoy being there.
- 49:33Speaker 23: Yeah, the first part of the question, The thing that
- 49:35Speaker 23: creates the most confidence for me is our roster. Our
- 49:38Speaker 23: roster is in a much better place than it's been
- 49:41Speaker 23: the last two seasons, so that immediately gives you a
- 49:43Speaker 23: chance to upgrade and change the outcome. I think the
- 49:47Speaker 23: next thing that I'm again most excited about that I've
- 49:50Speaker 23: already talked about a little bit is just the retention.
- 49:52Speaker 23: So guys being back that had to live some of
- 49:55Speaker 23: the things that we lived last year and go through
- 49:57Speaker 23: some of the things that we went through. And I
- 50:00Speaker 23: hate using the word, but being close and having the
- 50:02Speaker 23: ability to go change the outcome and take that next
- 50:05Speaker 23: step as a program, but be able to change the
- 50:07Speaker 23: outcome on those Saturday afternoons. So great confidence starts with
- 50:11Speaker 23: the roster and the retention of the guys that we
- 50:13Speaker 23: needed to come back. The thing that makes Starvells so
- 50:16Speaker 23: special is the people. There's great connection, there's a great community,
- 50:20Speaker 23: there's great support, and there's a lot of love in
- 50:23Speaker 23: a small college town where and people are pulling the
- 50:26Speaker 23: rope the same direction, and I love that. I love
- 50:29Speaker 23: it for my kids and for my wife to be
- 50:31Speaker 23: able to be there in such a such a cool community,
- 50:34Speaker 23: and it's how I was raised, it's how I grew up,
- 50:37Speaker 23: and same thing for my wife. So that's why it's
- 50:40Speaker 23: special to us.
- 50:41Speaker 8: Okay, we'll go back down the center l to our
- 50:43Speaker 8: right hand side.
- 50:45Speaker 25: Hey, coach Brian's Power Columbia Missourian. You talk about taking
- 50:49Speaker 25: that next step as a program, but during the mid
- 50:51Speaker 25: season this year, you have a really tough stretch starting
- 50:53Speaker 25: with Alabama and then three straight road games in very
- 50:55Speaker 25: hostile environments. What would you consider successful during that stretch
- 51:00Speaker 25: to help you get to that next step.
- 51:03Speaker 23: Yeah, I haven't thought about necessarily that stretch. We've got
- 51:08Speaker 23: a twelve game regular season schedule that is incredibly difficult,
- 51:12Speaker 23: and so for us, it's about truly being able to
- 51:15Speaker 23: reset one at a time. And everybody says it, but
- 51:18Speaker 23: it's such a real thing as you live it and
- 51:20Speaker 23: then you look up on Sunday morning and you hope
- 51:23Speaker 23: you had the outcome that you had on Saturday, and man,
- 51:25Speaker 23: you're ready to get right back to work and go
- 51:27Speaker 23: chase it for that next Saturday. So as we look
- 51:30Speaker 23: at it, every single week is going to create challenge.
- 51:33Speaker 23: It's about how we handle it. It's about how we
- 51:35Speaker 23: prepare to give us a chance to go execute and
- 51:37Speaker 23: go win.
- 51:38Speaker 8: Okay, well, stay in the section over to our right
- 51:40Speaker 8: hand side. About three quarters the way back.
- 51:42Speaker 26: Hey, coach Landon Tucker MPW digital, some of your players
- 51:46Speaker 26: went somewhat viral with a TikTok dance. Recently, I was wondering,
- 51:49Speaker 26: is there a scenario or maybe even a win total
- 51:52Speaker 26: that would somehow get you in one of those videos
- 51:55Speaker 26: with them?
- 51:55Speaker 23: Absolutely not.
- 51:58Speaker 8: Ask Kelly, if you have a question, raise your hand.
- 52:03Speaker 8: We'll get a microphone. We'll bring one up here for
- 52:06Speaker 8: th row to Barry. Yeah, Jeff, Barry Trammel from.
- 52:12Speaker 13: The Tulsa World.
- 52:14Speaker 27: You guys ran it pretty good last year, but a
- 52:17Speaker 27: lot of teams did, a lot of traditionally strong teams.
- 52:20Speaker 27: Something going on with college football defenses now that are
- 52:23Speaker 27: sort of clogging up the running game for a lot
- 52:27Speaker 27: of people.
- 52:28Speaker 23: I think, and again in this league, I do. I
- 52:31Speaker 23: think the lines of scrimmage and what is going on
- 52:34Speaker 23: in the defensive lines along with scheme has made it
- 52:39Speaker 23: really hard for people to line up and just go
- 52:42Speaker 23: run the football in traditional ways. I think you've got
- 52:46Speaker 23: to put air in the defense. I think you've got
- 52:47Speaker 23: a scheme to set your guys up for success. And
- 52:50Speaker 23: I think the defensive lines again in this league, and
- 52:53Speaker 23: how people are cutting the front and changing structurally makes
- 52:56Speaker 23: it really really hard to be able to go execute
- 53:00Speaker 23: and play one, to play seventy five and run the
- 53:02Speaker 23: football the way you need to. But that's gonna be
- 53:05Speaker 23: critical for us. We're gonna have to run the ball
- 53:07Speaker 23: really really well, want to be explosive in the run game,
- 53:10Speaker 23: but we're gonna have to be great situation and get
- 53:12Speaker 23: done what we want to get done.
- 53:14Speaker 8: Coach will gobot back over here to our right hand side,
- 53:17Speaker 8: over to the right.
- 53:20Speaker 28: Over here, Hey, coach Brad. With college sportscasts, you've talked
- 53:25Speaker 28: about bringing Zach Arnett back into the fold. Just run
- 53:29Speaker 28: through the process of how that happened and just bringing
- 53:33Speaker 28: him back into Mississippi State.
- 53:36Speaker 23: Yeah, the biggest thing for me was wanting to add
- 53:38Speaker 23: a piece inside that defensive staff room to be able
- 53:41Speaker 23: to go run it, that had ran it, that had
- 53:43Speaker 23: called it, that had called it inside this conference. That's
- 53:45Speaker 23: what I wanted first, and had the experience of being
- 53:50Speaker 23: a defensive coordinator and having to adjust and understood the
- 53:54Speaker 23: grind of what we do every single week. Obviously, Zach
- 53:58Speaker 23: has that, and I coached against him and didn't enjoy
- 54:02Speaker 23: going against him. He made it really really hard, and
- 54:05Speaker 23: that for me was just another great stamp and a
- 54:08Speaker 23: check the box situation where I knew what I was
- 54:12Speaker 23: getting and I've talked a ton about being the aggressor,
- 54:15Speaker 23: being able to affect the quarterback create negative plays. He's
- 54:19Speaker 23: done that and he has been awesome in the building.
- 54:22Speaker 23: He's been great from a leadership standpoint on that side
- 54:26Speaker 23: of the ball for us, and I feel like it
- 54:28Speaker 23: does free me up in a great way, which has
- 54:31Speaker 23: been awesome.
- 54:33Speaker 8: Okay, we'll go in the section in front of me
- 54:35Speaker 8: about three quarters of the way back.
- 54:36Speaker 15: Hey, coach Chris Marler, Louisiana Sports Sutton A yet I
- 54:40Speaker 15: had to follow up the TikTok question, but I'm not
- 54:42Speaker 15: going to do that to you. Mario Taylor last year
- 54:45Speaker 15: put up video game numbers since two starts at the
- 54:47Speaker 15: end of the season. What's his ceiling this year and
- 54:50Speaker 15: what's one thing he has to work on most going
- 54:52Speaker 15: into the season.
- 54:53Speaker 23: Yeah, I don't necessarily put a ceiling on K one.
- 54:56Speaker 23: He's a special young man. He's a special talent, but
- 54:59Speaker 23: he's a special young man. We're going to be incredibly
- 55:01Speaker 23: aggressive from an install standpoint, the way this guy retains,
- 55:05Speaker 23: the way he goes about his business on the day
- 55:08Speaker 23: to day to be able to prepare to put himself
- 55:10Speaker 23: in position to go have success in between the White lines.
- 55:13Speaker 23: It's elite, and that's one of the things I'm probably
- 55:16Speaker 23: most excited about for him. I would like to think
- 55:19Speaker 23: that if you asked him his number one goal this year,
- 55:22Speaker 23: the first thing is the start a minimum of thirteen games.
- 55:25Speaker 23: That means stay healthy, that means not take unnecessary hits
- 55:28Speaker 23: and finding ways to get down to get out of
- 55:31Speaker 23: bounds and understand. And it's about the next place.
- 55:34Speaker 8: So I am.
- 55:35Speaker 23: I'm incredibly excited. I'm proud of who he is and
- 55:39Speaker 23: how he's led for being a young guy man. He
- 55:42Speaker 23: done nak young and he does he got a big
- 55:44Speaker 23: time future and really excited about what he's going to
- 55:47Speaker 23: be able to do for us.
- 55:49Speaker 7: All right, that was part of what Jeff Levy had
- 55:51Speaker 7: to say at SEC Media Days last week. We're going
- 55:53Speaker 7: to take a break and we will send you to
- 55:55Speaker 7: the five o'clock hour. This is Chip Howard Sports Talk
- 55:57Speaker 7: on the Zone.
