Transcript
- 0:07Hi, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon here
- 0:10on a Tuesday. The Iowa Sports Radio Network
- 0:13going to talk sports with you for the next couple of hours.
- 0:16Thanks for starting your afternoon with us, Trent Condon
- 0:19and myself, Ken Miller. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:22program. Rob Doster from the field of 68.
- 0:24Very busy guy. Grateful that he's going to give
- 0:27us a little bit of time here. Coming up at 12:25 or
- 0:30thereabouts to Rob Doster on what he may be a couple of
- 0:34takeaways from what he saw the first weekend.
- 0:36Obviously, a good long look at the Sweet 16.
- 0:39We'll get into that in the first segment coming up here.
- 0:41But Rob Doster will help us out in about 25 minutes.
- 0:44Then Scott Dockerman from The Athletic will put a bow on the
- 0:48eye with women, with Doc as he was at Carver.
- 0:50We'll do some some football things, related topics with
- 0:53Scott Dockerman coming up at 12:45.
- 0:56And then 1:25, we'll get Tommy Birch, who covers a couple of
- 1:02things for the Des Moines Register.
- 1:03Well, more than that, but he's on the Iowa State women's beat.
- 1:07There are now 4 of Finley's team that have decided to enter the
- 1:11transfer portal. None of the big 4 yet.
- 1:14We'll get into that. We'll talk Iowa State women with
- 1:17Tommy Birch. And then the I Cubs open on
- 1:19Friday, believe it or not, Iowa Cubs baseball downtown Des
- 1:22Moines as they will start another season.
- 1:25By the way, the crew in the afternoon, the boys off the
- 1:28bench, Sean and Lucas will be downtown Des Moines to do their
- 1:34show on Friday, opening day at Principal Park.
- 1:38They'll be playing ball in 2026. Trent will make some picks.
- 1:42There is some basketball tonight.
- 1:44How'd you do on the women's yesterday?
- 1:46One in one. All right, so split lost the
- 1:48juice, but you got one in the win column and put one in the
- 1:51loss column. So that's the show in the next
- 1:53couple of hours. Rob Dostra will join us here at
- 1:5512:25. Look forward to that.
- 1:57Then Scott Dockerman and Tommy Burch.
- 1:59So kind of a quiet night if obviously after the women
- 2:02wrapped up their season, the Iowa win with Virginia.
- 2:05I did not watch any more basketball.
- 2:06What did you watch last night? I watched more women's
- 2:09basketball. Yeah, that was at the forefront
- 2:11of things. What else do we have going on
- 2:13last night? Oh, we had our first offseason
- 2:16wrestling practice with Jack. So I took a big no, but it does
- 2:20not. He's got baseball starting up.
- 2:21He's got soccer around the corner.
- 2:23Softball season is basically here is we'll have tournament
- 2:27starting up here in a couple of weeks.
- 2:28So it is that time of year. The busyness is going to hit
- 2:32overload once again and got to bed last night a little later
- 2:37that I wanted. I've told you I've been under
- 2:39the weather. Didn't get a great night of
- 2:40sleep Sunday night because I couldn't probably couldn't
- 2:44sleep. I couldn't I really couldn't it,
- 2:45it was I just was euphoric and and 27 years in 1999 and
- 2:51everything that we talked about yesterday, I just didn't sleep
- 2:53really well. And then it got even worse last
- 2:56night. Sickness coupled with tiredness
- 2:59overtired a kid in the bed that a second kid jumped into the bed
- 3:04and so I went down to the couch and then my wife leaves at 4:30
- 3:08to go to the gym and that's. What time Tara leaves the house.
- 3:11She does, yeah. She's crazy.
- 3:12What time's the gym open? 5 She's she's there.
- 3:16Bright and early. Absolutely.
- 3:17First one there and my daughter apparently came running out of
- 3:21the house after her. She was pulling out of the
- 3:23driveway because she couldn't find me because I was laying on
- 3:25the couch. So she wakes me up and that's
- 3:28been it. So I got about an hour of sleep.
- 3:30Oh, good. Yeah, I am feeling punchy.
- 3:33I'm feeling very tired. I'm feeling ill and yet I don't
- 3:36care because I was in the sweet. 60s Yeah, indeed they are.
- 3:39Nothing's gonna change their Trenton with a chance to punch
- 3:41their ticket to the Elite 8, obviously.
- 3:44So we'll get into that. But let's let's start with the
- 3:46Iowa women and what happened yesterday with them as their
- 3:50season comes to an end against Virginia team like it's very
- 3:54similar to the Texas had to play into the play in game made it
- 3:57through that get to the 2C get to Monday after winning over the
- 4:00weekend and knock off the University of Iowa who had not
- 4:03played well. You mentioned that Trent had not
- 4:06played well against who did they play for Le Dickinson right on
- 4:10on Saturday. Just just your thoughts.
- 4:13What went wrong? And, and, and big picture, what,
- 4:16what does this mean? Because I think I would.
- 4:19Men are on an uptick. Yeah.
- 4:21Iowa women, people still support them and still will.
- 4:24I'm not saying that they won't, but the men are going to sell
- 4:27more tickets. Yeah.
- 4:28And in a lot of households, it's, you know, we can do one.
- 4:31We can't do them both. What what does this mean?
- 4:35Are there going to be women's tickets more readily available
- 4:38than there have been in the last, what, handful of years?
- 4:40Well, 'cause you couldn't get. Them, you couldn't.
- 4:42And we found out that they probably left Bunny on the
- 4:44table, certainly during Caitlin's final season.
- 4:47I think that was an easy one. The tickets are very affordable.
- 4:50They still are in comparison to the other options that are out
- 4:53there. And when you're talking about
- 4:54entertainment, yeah, women are always going to have their
- 4:57place. But with this renewed optimism
- 5:01and Ben McCollum continues this momentum going forward.
- 5:04And by the way. He's not turning down any
- 5:06national media. It's.
- 5:08Absolutely good for him. He did barstool this morning,
- 5:11did McAfee yesterday and why wouldn't you?
- 5:15He's selling his program and that that on top of what he said
- 5:19in the locker room after the game.
- 5:20Like if you're soft, don't come to play for.
- 5:21Us. Yes, absolutely.
- 5:22If you're tough and you like being coach, we'd love to have
- 5:25you. So that's kind of the message
- 5:27that he's carried forward, he gets.
- 5:28It he does. He gets it.
- 5:30He has a long track record, a point guard, that's what they're
- 5:32going to need going into next season, doesn't need another
- 5:34lead guard. And depending on the NIL funding
- 5:37and there was a list out there that hired, I was 16th out of
- 5:40the Sweet 16 teams, who knows the validity behind those kind
- 5:44of things, but. Yeah, 'cause Iowa State was just
- 5:45a couple above them, right? I think that there's more money
- 5:48there than being, you know, on the books.
- 5:50And that Twitter account, I mean, there's no basis where it
- 5:53came from or anything like that. So it is, I think, for wild
- 5:56speculation. But that aside, they're going to
- 5:58be in really good shape. But yeah, when it comes to the
- 6:00Iowa women, there's an opportunity here and an
- 6:04opportunity to carry this momentum.
- 6:06Coming off Caitlin Clark. You look at what they did and
- 6:08they got well, let's go. Coming in next year, who's
- 6:10outstanding highest rated recruit they've had since
- 6:12Caitlin Clark? That's coming in next year.
- 6:15She had a tremendous year coming off an ACL injury.
- 6:17She's stuck. But we also saw Addie deal I.
- 6:20Was about to say the very same thing.
- 6:22Trent. I heard the same thing about
- 6:23Addie Deal. And obviously she was not
- 6:26surefire, you know, put her in the starting lineup, you know,
- 6:28you're good to go. There is.
- 6:29Is that maybe unfair? Not unfair to her, but maybe
- 6:33expectations 'cause we saw Lucy Olson.
- 6:35Mm Hmm. We were told I wasn't gonna be
- 6:37Kate and Clark. Nobody is.
- 6:38Yeah, right. And nobody bought into the fact
- 6:40that she was going to be and she wasn't.
- 6:41And she had a nice. Year she was really good.
- 6:43She was really good. But she was older, yes, than
- 6:45Addie Deal, 22, right? And Addie Deal was fresh out of
- 6:48high school, yes, and coming across the country to Iowa.
- 6:51She grew up in a California count, right?
- 6:55We'll see. We'll see.
- 6:57They have a lot of work to do in the portal.
- 6:59But here's the thing about Jan Jensen at least strikes me from
- 7:02afar. Correct me if I'm wrong, she
- 7:03sure seems to get into her shares of living.
- 7:05Rooms. Oh yes.
- 7:06Yeah, I mean, people are listening to the Iowa message,
- 7:08Roots and families. But they went big game, honey.
- 7:11Yep. And all they came up with was 1.
- 7:14And that's not fair to well, let's go.
- 7:16And that's not fair because you got one better zero, right?
- 7:19But it's a 0 sum game and that's what recruiting is.
- 7:22Doesn't matter if you got in all those living rooms.
- 7:23Because close the deal. You also, you look around and
- 7:27there's girls here from the state of Iowa, they're going to
- 7:29play high D1 basketball, going to Crate and go to Kansas.
- 7:33Those are the prospects that normally you would have zeroed
- 7:35in on. You didn't.
- 7:37Is that going to hurt you recruit?
- 7:38Harder you mean? Right, because you're going
- 7:41after these big ones and that's where you're all your attention
- 7:43is and that's where hey, the spot is yours and that next tier
- 7:46that or I would normally got, well, you didn't get them
- 7:49because we're going after the bigger ones.
- 7:50And because of that, is that something that's going to impact
- 7:53them? The momentum of Caitlin Clark
- 7:55could only last so long as it pertains to the program.
- 7:59We've seen this before. We've seen programs that have
- 8:01had these great upticks but not been able in the women's
- 8:05basketball game to carry that momentum.
- 8:07South Carolina was able to do it.
- 8:08UCONN's been able to do it. Tennessee, no.
- 8:10Look at that program, no, for decades and decades and decades.
- 8:14And now they're also ran. And certainly in women's
- 8:17basketball in the way that it is.
- 8:20It is a dangerous spot now because the pressure of what
- 8:23happened with Caitlin Clark, of continuing that momentum when
- 8:27you lose at home, second time in five years you've done that.
- 8:31Are these sophomores going to take that and use that
- 8:33motivation? Another thing, how many people
- 8:36are wired like Caitlin Clark? Very few.
- 8:38And she talked so much about that loss to Creighton and how
- 8:41important that was and driving them getting to the final four
- 8:43in the championship game the next two years.
- 8:45Is that loss. Was that fuel?
- 8:48Does everybody have that? Do all those players have that?
- 8:50Because you saw yesterday certainly didn't seem like
- 8:54players that are wired in the same way.
- 8:56Well. Especially the last was the 67
- 8:58apiece, the very last possession before I've of.
- 9:01Regulation, yes, but what are we doing standing around?
- 9:04Standing? Exactly what they were doing
- 9:06standing around, settling and had a great look in overtime.
- 9:10And Taylor Strumlow just couldn't knock it down.
- 9:13She's one at 10. Chitchat.
- 9:16What was he she, 88 to 22? She took a lot of shots.
- 9:19She took a lot of shots and she should have taken even more.
- 9:21I mean, there was one that's wide open at the top of the
- 9:23shot, cloud coming down. She doesn't even fire up the
- 9:25shot, and there was a lot of that.
- 9:27Well, there was. I mean, if you were, it was
- 9:30hiding in her, right? Yeah, and nobody else.
- 9:33The other thing is. Stalking.
- 9:35I don't know. What did she finish with 10?
- 9:37I don't remember. I think it was she had a double
- 9:39double. She had like 19 rebounds.
- 9:40Again, but yeah. Right.
- 9:42How many Miss Bunnies? How many inside?
- 9:45Her development was incredibly frustrating to watch.
- 9:48You saw a player when she had CC with her that could run the
- 9:52floor, get up and down, do some incredible things and just never
- 9:56developed more than what she was A tremendous athlete.
- 9:58As good of a rim runners, you're going to find a women's college
- 10:00basketball, but there wasn't that next tier.
- 10:03Never developed a jump shot at consistent level, improved, but
- 10:07not at the levels I think we thought we were going to see
- 10:09from her. You never got that out of her.
- 10:11And obviously the Taylor McCabe injury, we saw it again was out
- 10:14of both these games. When you don't have that kind of
- 10:18shooter with the bigs that you have, it can be like this
- 10:22chitchat, right was a 50% three-point shooter on the air
- 10:25wasn't good enough strum will turn into a 40% three-point
- 10:28shooter. She's won a 10 and to see the
- 10:32stagnation on offense, I think that's where the question for
- 10:36Jan Jensen's going to be right in the triangle offense and some
- 10:39of the things that they've done and we saw it at the highest
- 10:41level when you had that high low action was Stulkey in the high
- 10:44post and and hide in the low posted.
- 10:46When it was going good, it was really good.
- 10:49But when Iowa couldn't get those first looks, there wasn't that
- 10:52second option. And that has to be the question
- 10:54going forward. If you're going to be a triangle
- 10:56team, do it. But you have to recruit to that.
- 10:58You have to have the right fits. You can't just, we're going to
- 11:01try this. Sometimes you have to go in if
- 11:03that's the kind of offense that you're going to run.
- 11:05And I just didn't see enough different options out of it
- 11:08different ways. Well, all right, they're
- 11:10guarding the post and the fronting, so we can't throw it
- 11:12in for the wing. OK, what are you going to do?
- 11:14And there were no secondary actions.
- 11:16And that would be the questions that I would have about what
- 11:19they're trying to do offensively if they're going to get to the
- 11:22point and he lose to A10 seat, yeah.
- 11:24Who was in the playing game? Yes, the first team ever to come
- 11:27for the play in game. Let's take a call.
- 11:29Jeff's been on hold. And Jeff, welcome to the
- 11:31program. How are you?
- 11:33I'm doing well. I just want to touch base on a
- 11:35couple of quick things because I couldn't call in yesterday.
- 11:38That Iowa game for me for being 38, that's the biggest win that
- 11:43I can remember. Now you could talk about 1999.
- 11:46I don't remember 1999. So you know, and that's not, you
- 11:52know, I think that's the biggest one as a one seed defending
- 11:54champion. The way that the way that Ben
- 11:57did it in my in Tampa, there was one section of Iowa fans there.
- 12:04They struggled to win on the road this season to go down
- 12:07there as a 10 1/2 point underdog.
- 12:10No one gave them a shot to win probably besides them and the
- 12:13family and the coaching staff. And again, the by and the belief
- 12:17that we can go in there and just punk them to a team that was the
- 12:22best rebounding team in the nation.
- 12:23Plus 15 to that's a push. That's that's really like a 1515
- 12:28rebound edge, a team that could do that undersized all season
- 12:32long. You can talk about Purdue, you
- 12:33can talk about bigger teams that how they struggled.
- 12:37The coaching, the the belief in those kids and the coaching
- 12:40staff to get that done is remarkable.
- 12:43And and the chance they have here in that region with
- 12:47Nebraska, who they beat, who they lost in overtime on the
- 12:49road the last regular season game of the regular season, we
- 12:52have all that. This is such a winnable game.
- 12:55Yes, it's in Houston. Yes, the pick is expensive, but
- 12:58if if you're a huge donor, if you're a Hawkeye fan, I don't
- 13:02you have to go down there. Like, I mean, this is a could we
- 13:06say a once in a 25 year run here.
- 13:09Like for him to do that, for him to do that year one is unreal.
- 13:14You know, it's funny you mention that Jeff, because trend I was
- 13:16thinking about this last night. I mean, when you're doing talk
- 13:19rating with whoever you're working with in 10 years, is it
- 13:22Fast forward to 2036 and and McCollum got bounced in the
- 13:27first round after not making the tournament the year before and
- 13:30you're getting caught. Well, 10 years was long time
- 13:32ago. Yes, absolutely that elite 8 was
- 13:34a long time ago. What's he done lately?
- 13:36So he set the bar pretty high, I guess, is my point, Right?
- 13:40Go ahead, Jeff. And it can get higher.
- 13:42That's the I mean you when you knock out the one seed of the
- 13:45defending champion, like the bars got set, yeah, pretty high,
- 13:49but it can get higher. That's the that's, that's the
- 13:52remarkable part about this, about this squad.
- 13:55Let's move on to Iowa State. I'm not going to We talked about
- 13:57what they did without Jefferson. We have all that.
- 13:59Here's where I'm I'm happy that you guys haven't LED with this
- 14:03because it's eating me up. And maybe I'm just I'm going
- 14:06down the rabbit hole and maybe I'm panicking because I'm a huge
- 14:08Iowa State fan. I'm a big North Carolina fan.
- 14:12We know Herbert Davis probably is going to get fired, but why?
- 14:16What are they waiting for? That's my question.
- 14:18What are they waiting for? Because they don't want to fire.
- 14:21So they don't want to fire him. And I've been down this rabbit
- 14:23hole, which I wish I shouldn't. They've put a lot of money in
- 14:25the Belichick. They took a lot of money out of
- 14:28the basketball fund to the football fund.
- 14:30They got to make. They got to cross their T's dot
- 14:33their eyes with and they and they don't want to fire him.
- 14:36They kind of want to meet in the middle because that's the North
- 14:37Carolina way, supposedly. So let's say they they work it,
- 14:41he gets done. I wouldn't have guessed this.
- 14:44OK, TJS the third choice at +500 to be the next North Carolina
- 14:49coach. Let that soak in there.
- 14:51So then I started going down. You know the rumor I heard
- 14:54before that Before North Carolina?
- 14:57Let me tell you and see if I'm and see if we're thinking the
- 14:59same way. So then I start going down the
- 15:02rabbit hole with Kansas if Bill Sells wants to retire.
- 15:06And then I start looking And these aren't just these aren't
- 15:09just bull crap websites. This is Las Vegas Sports.
- 15:14Books. TJ is the second choice for the
- 15:17Kansas job. Well, those that's Kelsey.
- 15:18That's that's not a sports book, but yeah, go ahead.
- 15:21Yeah. That's that's fine.
- 15:22And you got Jock Von, which is a Kansas guy, which you would
- 15:25think that would make sense. Would he ever leave for the
- 15:28Kansas job? I would hope not.
- 15:30The North Carolina job, if that's real.
- 15:32And North North Carolina's sniffing around TJ with you
- 15:36would assume more NIL. You would assume a bigger
- 15:39payday. You could talk about Duke.
- 15:42I grew up with North Carolina. When I think of college
- 15:44basketball, I think of North Carolina.
- 15:46Michael Jordan. Hello.
- 15:48So I feel like that would be really, really, really, really
- 15:52hard to turn down. If he turns down the North
- 15:55Carolina, the Kansas job, I would believe he's probably
- 15:58going to be there for a long, long time.
- 15:59But if I'm asking you, how do you turn down a North Carolina
- 16:03job? I would say means a lot to him.
- 16:06It does, yes. Wife is one of the best players
- 16:08ever come through the program. He's got great connections here.
- 16:10His best friend is a big is a huge supporter of the program.
- 16:15See, I heard Kentucky. That was the one I heard last
- 16:17week was Kentucky. And ultimately they would play
- 16:20them and Mark Popes team obviously would fall to them.
- 16:23I like I said the same thing about Matt Campbell that I've
- 16:26really felt like this guys planting some roots.
- 16:28Yeah. And he's off to pen and I don't
- 16:30blame him. He did the right thing.
- 16:33I I can't let me go ahead. Let me say this.
- 16:36Let me let me let me throw this out here.
- 16:38If you're TJ and you know that the NIL is tapped out, they have
- 16:43no more money. Maybe they're throwing money to
- 16:46a cost country or to track and field, which is that's another
- 16:49conversation for another day. But if they're tapped out, it's
- 16:52supposedly at 7 and a half million, which like Trent said
- 16:55before, who knows if those numbers are real.
- 16:57I have no idea. But if they can't get any more
- 16:59money and you look at a North Carolina or a Kentucky that's
- 17:02spent 20 some million, which again, who knows if that's play
- 17:04money, who freaking knows? But if you look at these other
- 17:06programs and you say, you know what?
- 17:08I don't know what else I can do at Iowa State.
- 17:10The funds are tapped out or you know, we can't get our assistant
- 17:13coaches more money or I can't get more money.
- 17:15And you know, they can say it's not about money.
- 17:18Does that change your opinion on him staying if that's the truth?
- 17:21Certainly got to factor into it. Right.
- 17:23I think that's a huge Ave. and it's a question.
- 17:25Jeff, thanks for the call, man. Appreciate it.
- 17:27I don't think any of us have a true answer of what it is.
- 17:30I mean, there's a couple of people maybe I don't know how
- 17:33much daddy listens to us or, or people like that, right?
- 17:36But those are the people that really don't.
- 17:39Those are the people that have the idea of what it is and,
- 17:42well, you know who's also. Up on on on the list for North
- 17:44Carolina and Ben McCollum, OH. Yes, yeah, saw that one.
- 17:48Float it out. Ben McCollum.
- 17:49Yes. I mean, somebody called in
- 17:51yesterday and said, think about the coaches we've got coaching
- 17:54college basketball year. I mean, these two guys both
- 17:56coveted, both coveted both in the Sweet 16.
- 18:00Ben McCollum in his first year, TJ, what he is, I mean, he took
- 18:04over a team that did win a game in the freaking conference,
- 18:06right? I mean come on, they worked
- 18:08what, 2 and 22 in the whole. And Proms last year and?
- 18:11Proms last year and boom instantly and and he's continued
- 18:16on down this path and now they're a game away from getting
- 18:20to the elite aid and taking on a Michigan team that looks
- 18:23beatable to look Michigan's really good.
- 18:24I don't want to say they're just going to steam.
- 18:26They're not. What are you hearing on
- 18:29Jefferson You? Going to make it a go.
- 18:32I kind of get the same feeling, yeah.
- 18:35A sprained ankle. I kind of get the same feeling.
- 18:38You get that second look, make sure there's nothing
- 18:40structurally wrong you go in there.
- 18:42And apparently all that that was clean.
- 18:44A week later, yeah, it's not going to be 100%, no.
- 18:48We've seen plenty of guys play on badly sprained ankles.
- 18:51And that old adrenaline takes all.
- 18:53Absolutely. And there's other shots that you
- 18:55can also do, sure, numb that thing up a little bit.
- 18:58Heck, I got one when I was 18 my senior year at Osage.
- 19:01I mean. They needed you trend.
- 19:02Well, not really. We need Condon out there.
- 19:05Yeah, You know when you need a 572 guard to miss a couple of
- 19:08three pointers, you got to get them out there.
- 19:10Absolutely that is the case. The other, the biggest component
- 19:14to me when it comes to Otzel Burger, a possibility, it goes
- 19:18back to 13 months ago when the contract extension was announced
- 19:22and the buyout went from $18.2 million and the new contract,
- 19:27the buyout became $4 million. That, I think, is something that
- 19:31has to, at minimum, linger in everybody's mind with the same
- 19:3580. It won't be there forever, by
- 19:38the way. It won't be there forever.
- 19:40Another clause in that, that if Pollard would leave, that buyout
- 19:43drops down to $2,000,000. But when you get a new contract
- 19:47and you see that buyout language go from 18 million to 4, I think
- 19:52that's something that at minimum you have to think about.
- 19:55Rob Doster field of 68 next Miller and Condon on a Tuesday
- 19:58to the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 20:03I'm Mallory Condon, welcome back 12:25.
- 20:05We're with you until 2:00. Scott Dr. Man from the Athletic
- 20:08coming up here in about 20 minutes.
- 20:10Let's get to our friend Rob Doster, field of 68.
- 20:13If you're not following the field of 68 on Twitter and
- 20:16you're a college basketball fan, you are missing out.
- 20:19Rob Trenton, Ken, thanks for finding time for us.
- 20:21You had a really good live look at you and the crew and I think
- 20:25Stanford, Steve was there. That had to be the Nebraska
- 20:29Vandy game That that that incredible finish when they made
- 20:33the shot and then Vandy comes down, almost goes in.
- 20:36Do you know the one I'm referring to?
- 20:37I'm guessing got a million hits. Yeah, it was.
- 20:40It was Santa Clara in Kentucky. It was the that's.
- 20:43What it was? Game where Santa Clara out the
- 20:45graves hit the three, which feels like that might as well
- 20:49have happened in 2020. Really Like that's how long ago
- 20:52Thursday and Friday feel like at this point.
- 20:54Yeah, no. Who's the most disappoint?
- 20:56I mean, obviously the Florida would be there one seed, but was
- 20:59there a team that you know that you were watching that that you
- 21:04were disappointed in how quickly they were gone from this
- 21:07tournament? Who is the most disappointing
- 21:09team to you? It's one that I think people in
- 21:14the great state of Iowa are going to be pretty familiar with
- 21:16at this point. You know, you're the reigning
- 21:18national champion. You come in with an SEC regular
- 21:22season and under your belt. You come in with a level of
- 21:26swagger and and a level of kind of what's the word word for
- 21:31confidence? It comes with being that Florida
- 21:34team and you go out in the first round where you kind of get like
- 21:39beat at your own thing by Iowa. That's kind of the way that I
- 21:42would phrase it, right, Like they they Iowa one on the glass
- 21:46against the team, you know, significantly bigger,
- 21:49significantly more athletic. They were able to run offense
- 21:54against the team that's supposed to be one of the better
- 21:56defensive teams in college basketball, were able to avoid
- 21:58turning the ball over and they just kind of controlled the game
- 22:02from from the start. And that's not something that's
- 22:04supposed to happen when you are, when you're Florida, when you
- 22:08are as good as that team is supposed to be, when you are as
- 22:12tough as the team supposed to be.
- 22:13So to me, that's the biggest disappointing.
- 22:16I thought Florida had a very real chance to repeat here, but
- 22:21it was not meant to be. Rob, we've been talking hoops,
- 22:24you and I for, I don't know, 12 years, 15 years now.
- 22:27It's been a long time, I know, since our past first crossed.
- 22:30And you know, my affinity for Iowa basketball.
- 22:32It's been a long, long, dry winter for me or throughout this
- 22:36time. But here we are and finally back
- 22:38in the Sweet 16 since my freshman year at the University
- 22:41of Iowa. It's been a long time, Rob.
- 22:43Ben McCollum, I want to just get your perspective.
- 22:45I was so excited when you had time to join us today because we
- 22:49see it here, but in the basketball community, we know
- 22:52how well thought of he is. Give us your thoughts on Ben
- 22:55McCollum, and not just the job that he did this year, but the
- 22:58possibility of something maybe special going forward for Iowa
- 23:00hoops. Yeah, I mean, look, you got one
- 23:04of the best coaches in college basketball.
- 23:07You know, I think that's kind of where you've got to be excited,
- 23:10right? Like, there's a reason why Ben
- 23:13McCollum has won every level thing you've been.
- 23:15There's a reason why he was just so dominant division two level.
- 23:19There's a reason why he steps up to the major level and he's able
- 23:23to do what he does with Drake. There's a reason why you're
- 23:25going to the NCAA tournament your first season in the Big 10
- 23:29with a roster of guys that like some of them were division two.
- 23:33Like Bennett starts as a as an All American and he was a guy
- 23:38that when Ben had him at Northwest Missouri State was not
- 23:42even the first team all Concord guy, let alone the first team
- 23:44all American. He wasn't the first team all
- 23:45conference guy in Northwest Missouri State.
- 23:48And McCollum saw something that dude, you know, there's there's
- 23:52something to be said for just really understanding how to be
- 23:56able to create the matchups you want, how to be able to be
- 24:01efficient with what you're trying to run and being able to
- 24:04kind of get your the, the confidence that you have and
- 24:09your execution and getting a team to buy into that when
- 24:12they're going up. You got an all American point
- 24:17guard. But the rest of those guys
- 24:18probably are going to be finding something else to do other than
- 24:21basketball within what, like the next 5 to 6 years at the most,
- 24:24right? And they're going to be a team
- 24:27that has Tommy Hawkins lottery pick and Alex Condon is going to
- 24:31end up being an NBA player. Ruben Cheniello is going to end
- 24:33up being an NBA player. And maybe I don't for playing
- 24:37the league, but he's going to be playing in some league for a
- 24:39while and buggy slams like NBA potentially you're going up
- 24:43against a team full of pros and you find a way to be able to
- 24:46beat them with their own. Just it's really, really, really
- 24:49impressive. And I it might not be the most
- 24:52aesthetically pleasing brand of basketball because of the pace
- 24:55that I will play that, but they're really good.
- 24:58And this is the thing that impressed for the most, right?
- 25:00A lot of times the easiest thing to do when you are the underdog
- 25:05and you're going up against the team that is going to try to
- 25:08press you, that's going to try to speed the tempo, that's going
- 25:10to try to make the game be a little bit more more up and down
- 25:16than you want it to be, is to break pressure and go in and
- 25:19attack and go try to take a leg or try to make a shot at the
- 25:21rim. And if you go back and you
- 25:23watch, I would never did that, They would have like three or
- 25:27two opportunities after breaking the press and they were just
- 25:29kind of getting her off and to go set it up like the control
- 25:32over the command they had over the tempo that the game was
- 25:35played at is is something that should be studied for
- 25:38generations. It was incredible.
- 25:41Your thoughts on Iowa State and where they're at?
- 25:43They'll obviously they'll take on the Tennessee team led by
- 25:46Gillespie. Your thoughts on the clones?
- 25:48Jefferson may or may not trending positive, but still a
- 25:52long way from Friday I. Mean look man, if if he plays,
- 25:56he's not going to be himself. There's no way possible, you
- 26:00know, you can talk to native men injured his ankle, what is it
- 26:03like 6 weeks ago now? And he's still the same guy that
- 26:06he was before that ankle injury happened.
- 26:08Silas Demery had nine days between the biggest tournament
- 26:12title game and he played in on Sunday.
- 26:16And like, he wasn't close to being himself or being what he
- 26:20he normally is. You know, the thing about ankle
- 26:23injuries is that they're painful, but he would take a
- 26:27couple, take some meds, right? You take that thing up as tight
- 26:31as you can. You let the adrenaline get
- 26:33flawed. You don't really feel it as
- 26:35much, but you don't have that explosiveness.
- 26:38Like you don't have that quick twitch, that quick burst, the
- 26:41side to side stuff. And if there is one benefit for
- 26:44Josh Jefferson is that that too hard?
- 26:47He doesn't have any of that. Like he already isn't quick.
- 26:50He already isn't like good laterally, already isn't fast or
- 26:53super explosive. So I do think that there's a
- 26:56chance that he could get in the game.
- 26:59I will I'll say that I think that I think that Iowa State
- 27:06wins without Tennessee. I just I think their guards are
- 27:09too much defensively. And the thing that's great about
- 27:12them and the thing that's so difficult to deal with is that
- 27:14they're going to make you run your offense starting like 40
- 27:16feet away from that. So I just I think Iowa State has
- 27:20enough. It doesn't mean that they're
- 27:21going to win, but I think they certainly have enough because if
- 27:24they, and I don't want this to sound like a shot at Joshua
- 27:29Jefferson, but I think a large part of why he's an all American
- 27:32is a product of the system more than it is like the simple fact
- 27:35that he's a surefire. Like if he goes and plays for, I
- 27:40don't know, like Houston, like he's not an all American just
- 27:42because he's an all American. He's an all American really damn
- 27:46good player that happens to play in a system at the perfect pit
- 27:48form. So I think there's enough there
- 27:51to be able to to win without him.
- 27:53And that's just kind of the culture and everything that TJ
- 27:57has developed and built there. We have 6 teams from the Big 10
- 28:00in the Sweet 16. It's a record for the Big 10.
- 28:03But does any of that matter? Or is it all about if we're
- 28:05talking about superiority in the Big 10, finally taking that next
- 28:09step and becoming the best conference in America?
- 28:12Does it have to conclude with the National championship?
- 28:13It is. Is it as simple as that for this
- 28:15conference as a whole? Because this has been the knock
- 28:18against him for 1/4 century now. They can't win a national
- 28:21championship. Is it as simple as that Doster?
- 28:24Look, I don't think that counting the number of teams
- 28:27that you get into to a certain round of the tournament is going
- 28:31to tell you who the best conference is or who the worst
- 28:33conference is, right? Like I think the Big 10 is
- 28:36really, really good. I think that they've been
- 28:38really, really good for a while. They just haven't had that elite
- 28:41level team. And when they have had one,
- 28:43they've run into something like UConn in 2024.
- 28:47This year, I think that you looked at Michigan, you look at
- 28:51Illinois, and you have two teams that are certainly good enough
- 28:54to get you to a Final Four. And if you're good enough to get
- 28:56to a Final Four in this era, you're going to be good enough
- 28:59to be able to compete with the teams that are also in the Final
- 29:01Four. So I think getting six teams in
- 29:04is great and it's awesome and it's a really good, you know,
- 29:07it's something that the conference can kind of stand on.
- 29:09I don't think it tells you who the best conference is.
- 29:13For me, it's still the Big 12. Like I think if you look at the
- 29:16top of the Big 12, you look at the coaches and teams and
- 29:18everything in that league, that's the best conference in
- 29:20college basketball. But Michigan is, I mean, they're
- 29:24healthiest at the right time. They're they're good teams are
- 29:27playing the best at the right time.
- 29:28But are you going to sit here and tell me that that Iowa is a
- 29:31better team than Florida just because Iowa won that game?
- 29:33No, I don't think anyone believes that.
- 29:35And all if you got Ben McComb the moment of honesty, he'd
- 29:38probably tell you that Florida is a better team.
- 29:41They just beat him on that night.
- 29:42So that's the beauty of the tournament.
- 29:44Drawing overarching conclusion about what is happening in the
- 29:48sport from a game, knockout event is generally speaking, not
- 29:53a good idea. But it's also the most fun way
- 29:54to cover this sport Like, and it's fun to just push all of
- 29:58your your agendas, you know, because there's if there's one
- 30:01thing you can do in the tournament, you can always find
- 30:03a way to argue your point, right.
- 30:05So you know what, I'm with you. The the big 10, they proved it
- 30:09best team, best league in college basketball.
- 30:10They're going to have two teams in the national title.
- 30:13Guarantee that they're going to win a championship here.
- 30:16Rob Doser from the Field of 68. My question is kind of a selfish
- 30:20one. I need Arizona and Arkansas
- 30:23scares the crap out of me. A Cuff is a different player is
- 30:27Arkansas are are they live in this game?
- 30:30Do you think Rob did? Should Arizona you know be be
- 30:35not fearful but they may be in in a tough spot against this
- 30:39Calipari LED Razorback squad. I don't think so.
- 30:43Good. Now look, can Darius A Cup go
- 30:49for like 40 points and eight assists and turn this into the
- 30:52Darius A Cup show and look like the best player in college
- 30:55basketball and go out there and win this game all on his own?
- 30:57Yes, he's certainly capable of doing that.
- 31:00But Arizona is, in my mind, best team in the country right now.
- 31:04They had two really, really good, tough, physical guards in
- 31:07the back court that can guard him and they are the best job
- 31:10coverage team in the sport. And I don't see Darius A Cup
- 31:13being able to finish over Crevas at the rim.
- 31:16If he's going to beat you, it's going to be through a steady
- 31:18diet, like kind of tough mid range pull ups.
- 31:20And I don't think that necessarily is bread and butter.
- 31:23So I I don't the way I phrase it is I don't think Arkansas guards
- 31:29well enough to be able to slow down Arizona to the point that
- 31:33they can score enough that they can win this game.
- 31:36Like I just, I think that they're going to, I don't think
- 31:39it can stop Arizona. I think Arizona puts up 90 and I
- 31:42don't think Arkansas against that Arizona defense will be
- 31:44able to match that. So not only do I like Arizona to
- 31:47win, I think Arizona is going to cover.
- 31:48I think that is not going to necessarily be all that
- 31:51interesting everything. Yeah, that defense for Arkansas
- 31:53always pops up. That Florida team we talked
- 31:55about earlier just put a butter 11 against him not too long ago.
- 31:58Doster, St. John's, Duke.
- 32:00It's fun. Remember those games from the
- 32:02early 2000s? They played in the Garden one
- 32:04year as Eric Barkley, I think, went off for St.
- 32:06John's. You're a Northeast guy though,
- 32:08Brucey. Thornton man, come on, put some
- 32:10respect on Brucey Thornton's. Name.
- 32:11There you go. There you go.
- 32:13You're a Northeast guy. I don't know if we get it here
- 32:16in the Midwest, what St. John's basketball and what it
- 32:18means in New York City. Can he fill us in a little bit?
- 32:21Because it just, it's so it's different.
- 32:23It's odd. We hear of New York City, you
- 32:25think of professional sports. Why does St.
- 32:27John's matter so much? Well, it didn't.
- 32:30For 25 years, that's true. For 25 years, the city forgot
- 32:33that it existed. But she brought back a guy like
- 32:35Rick Pitino, who everybody in New York kind of identifies
- 32:39with. But he is a New Yorker at his
- 32:41core, and he brought back a level of swagger and he brought
- 32:44back a level of toughness. And he understands what what New
- 32:49York means or what New Yorkers think of themselves because he
- 32:52is 1. He's been able to take that
- 32:54identity and shove it into a basketball program.
- 32:57He's been able to get a billionaire to come in behind
- 32:59him and be able to spend the money that he needs to be able
- 33:03to get the players that he wants.
- 33:05And he's been able to get a program and a team to the point
- 33:09where they are championship. But I don't know if you guys
- 33:11remember this, but we had very well real questions about
- 33:15whether or not St. John's was going to make the
- 33:16tournament in like December after they lost to Kentucky.
- 33:20We're like, is this is this is this team?
- 33:22Are they going to make tournament after they lost the
- 33:24province? St.
- 33:25John was on the bubble and then they lost one game since then,
- 33:28one. Now, they got their pants
- 33:31completely pulled down by UConn in that game, but they've lost
- 33:34one game since that province because they figured out how to
- 33:38defend, figured out how to be able to kind of play with a
- 33:42bigger lineup. There's a level of toughness
- 33:44that permeates this roster that was not there as recently as two
- 33:49months ago. And to me, that is coaching,
- 33:52that is, that is developing your player, that is getting your
- 33:56guys to buy into what you're doing.
- 33:57Like all of the stuff that you need to be able to do in
- 33:59college. And look, you've done an
- 34:02unbelievable job, man. That's going to be a war, I
- 34:05think. I think ultimately Duke ends up
- 34:09winning this game just because I think Pat and Gong were back.
- 34:12They're too good. But Saint John is going to give
- 34:14them a fight, man, Like they they are going to give Duke a
- 34:17fight. So we'll we'll see how this
- 34:18plays out. Good stuff.
- 34:20Rob Doster, the Field of 68. Check them out on X every single
- 34:23day following the games you guys are on for what, about an hour
- 34:26and a half following the games when everybody else's coverage
- 34:28is gone for the night, Field of 68 takes over and takes.
- 34:32You while they sleep, we talk and.
- 34:34That's right, buddy. We're great.
- 34:37We're grateful for it. Thank you, Rob.
- 34:39I appreciate you finding time for us here in Iowa.
- 34:41Thanks, Rob Doster. Always a pleasure, gentlemen.
- 34:44Yeah, good to talk to you. Rob Doster field of 68 as we
- 34:47check in on the hoops. I'll take your time out.
- 34:50Come back. Scott Dockerman is next.
- 34:52Miller and Condon on Des Moines Sports Station one O 6.3 KXNO Hi
- 34:57Miller and Condon welcome back 1245 Tommy Birch in the second
- 35:01hour of the program talk about the Iowa State women put a bow
- 35:04on their season with Tommy. Maybe preview a little AAA
- 35:07baseball down at principal park. I Cubs begin their season coming
- 35:12up on Friday opening day downtown Des Moines.
- 35:14Let's talk to our friend Scott Dr. and he covers a whole lot of
- 35:16things for the athletic football, basketball, college
- 35:20football, the draft etcetera. It never takes it seems like
- 35:24very few dull moments right doc? There's always something out
- 35:27there for you, which is good, I guess, if you're in the
- 35:29business. Yeah, you want it to be this way
- 35:33and yeah, to been a little bit crazier, you know, with, you
- 35:37know, where you're not doing anything like in the COVID year.
- 35:40But no, it's been good every day, actually parts of every day
- 35:43have been different. And I guess that's better than
- 35:46than the alternative. So the Iowa women their season
- 35:49came to an end disappointing barely won on you were there
- 35:52barely won Saturday got beat yesterday by a team that was in
- 35:56the playing game in Virginia and came out of that to 10 seed
- 35:58knocked off A2 disappointing end to to the Iowa women's season
- 36:02Scott. Yeah.
- 36:04And first, let me correct you. It's not a play in game, it's a
- 36:06first four-game. Beg your pardon.
- 36:08You learned first hand, yes. Yes, yeah, it it was a
- 36:12disappointing end and it was one that I mean, I didn't, I thought
- 36:16they were they, they had overachieved during the year
- 36:21because other than Ava Haydn it it and and Hannah Stoelke to an
- 36:26extent, I thought that they just didn't have the the pieces
- 36:30necessary to reach, you know, the Sweet 16, certainly second
- 36:33in the Big 10, which they did. They played really well to do
- 36:36that. Very inconsistent, obviously
- 36:38from three-point range. They were dreadful in these two
- 36:41playoff games. And, you know, from the free
- 36:45throw line, they, they had opportunities, didn't convert
- 36:49and, and they are sitting at home and, and it's, it's
- 36:52disappointing for them, but I think it, it also brings up some
- 36:56questions for what they need going forward and the lack of of
- 37:01a true shooter from the perimeter and, you know, and
- 37:05really somebody who could create shots.
- 37:09I think you saw that they they missed both of those really, you
- 37:13know, quite a bit, especially in this game against Virginia.
- 37:16Carrying the momentum of Caitlin Clark is big back-to-back
- 37:19tournaments. That's a good thing.
- 37:20In Jay and Jensen's first two years.
- 37:23Are they equipped in the portal to still be able to go out there
- 37:26and get a couple of big fish? They were able a couple years
- 37:28ago to get Lucy Olsen, which was huge for them.
- 37:30Are they still at that level and the momentum and the finances
- 37:34still there for them to be able to compete at the highest level
- 37:37of the portal this offseason? Yeah, sure it is.
- 37:40Absolutely. I mean, you know, do they have
- 37:42the most money? I don't know.
- 37:44I don't think they quite have the most, but they have more
- 37:46than most. And when you look at what they
- 37:50brought to the table yesterday, I was really surprised to see, I
- 37:55mean, the crowd, it was a sold out arena and it was as loud and
- 37:59engaged as it ever has been. I think, you know, this year was
- 38:03you look in totality, it's easy to be disappointed and point out
- 38:07all the the shortcomings this team had.
- 38:09But you also have to say this is one of the better coaches
- 38:12coaching jobs that Jan Jensen did.
- 38:13Now, we can criticize some of the decisions, in game
- 38:18decisions, I think at the end of the regulation and overtime and
- 38:22point out to some of the inefficiencies there.
- 38:24But I think when you look at the grand scheme, you know, to do
- 38:28what she was able to do with this team and this roster, I
- 38:32think it speaks to what I was more than capable of doing.
- 38:36And then you have one of the best players in the country
- 38:38coming in, you know, and McKenna Lesko, I think they are very
- 38:44much well positioned to continue to compete at a very high level,
- 38:48whether it's in the portal and then on the floor.
- 38:52What what on the men doc? Obviously Sunday night was just
- 38:55amazing to get that monkey off the fan bases proverbial back,
- 38:59if you will, collective back the the lack of Sweet 16 runs, just
- 39:03an amazing to knock off the defending champ, A1 seed,
- 39:06etcetera. Your thoughts on the momentum
- 39:09that McCollum in the Eye will men's program carries forward
- 39:12into next year whenever this run from this year does come to an
- 39:16end? I think you see it that there's
- 39:20nothing like March and Iowa fans knew it.
- 39:23And right now everything is sky high.
- 39:27It's it's house money, if you will, when you talk about where
- 39:30this program is. But it also shows that there are
- 39:33a lot of opportunities for this program to to take steps forward
- 39:37because as Ragtaggy is at times as Iowa women look to the men
- 39:41are even more so that way, other than one player and to to beat
- 39:45A-Team like Florida basically on the road defending champions,
- 39:50number one seed. And to do it the way they did
- 39:53it, they have now have that chance to say, just imagine what
- 39:56we could do if we had a real center or if we had, you know,
- 40:00somebody who could really break down the defense.
- 40:02I mean, granted, Brent Bennett search is a terrific point
- 40:05guard, but they still have. You know, they they really have
- 40:09just a a very pedestrian roster outside of him.
- 40:12And I think, you know, Ben McCollum is proving his chops.
- 40:16I mean, why he won all those national titles at at Northwest
- 40:19Missouri State. It's not just because it was a
- 40:21lower level, it's because he knows the sport.
- 40:23So I think the momentum is very high and I think it's high among
- 40:26the fan base. It has to be.
- 40:27I mean, that was I, I, I don't say this lightly and it's
- 40:31certainly not hyperbolic, but I think that's as big of a shot
- 40:34Iowa's made from Alvaro Fragaris as since Kevin Gamble in 1987 in
- 40:40the Sweet 16. So I think this is this is
- 40:43something that will re energize this fan base that had been
- 40:47largely apathetic and dormant for quite a while.
- 40:51I can vividly remember jumping up from my couch in my living
- 40:54room in New Haven, Iowa, watching Kevin Gable knock that
- 40:56one down to knock off Oklahoma and set the scene for two days
- 41:00later when I was crying after the UNLV loss.
- 41:02But that's a story for another day, Doc.
- 41:04One more for me on the Iowa basketball front.
- 41:06And now what we get this match up against Nebraska.
- 41:10I don't know if there's a media member that enjoys trolling,
- 41:14having fun with the rivalry between Iowa, Nebraska quite as
- 41:18much as you do, Doc. So I mean, are you kind of
- 41:20getting your fingers ready, the keyboard ready to go?
- 41:22This should be a fun one and a border rivalry that didn't make
- 41:25your top 50 basketball rivalries.
- 41:27But maybe we'll in the future if you revisit that column in
- 41:30another 5-10 years. It's true, but except I I don't
- 41:34really like trolling. It just kind of accidentally
- 41:37happened and and that and that's just I'm like, hey.
- 41:41I don't want to do this. Leave me alone, You know,
- 41:43especially with the Caitlin Clark effect stuff that was like
- 41:46so innocent. But, but, but I digress.
- 41:49I it's amazing because I, I mean, I think Iowa historically
- 41:53has 2 indefinite rivals in in Illinois and, and Iowa State and
- 41:59they're both in the Sweet 16 and they could play Illinois after
- 42:02Nebraska, but the Iowa Nebraska series and in all sports.
- 42:06But now basketball, too, has taken it over to the point where
- 42:10it is a real, you know, it is that's real.
- 42:14And I think it's really fascinating that you see Iowa
- 42:17get to the Sweet 16 for the first time in 27 years and
- 42:20Nebraska win a NBA tournament game for the first time ever and
- 42:25it's in the same season and they're meeting.
- 42:27I can imagine the thought process from Nebraska fans.
- 42:30They wouldn't admit it out loud, but is that did it have to be
- 42:35Iowa? You know, if if you're going to
- 42:37lose, you know, Florida, Oh well, you know, we had a great
- 42:40season. We really enjoyed it.
- 42:41But but the thought of I don't think they'd really want to
- 42:44stomach the loss to Iowa. And and I I don't know, it's
- 42:47quite the same for Iowa fans in basketball because of this year
- 42:51was didn't have the same trajectory.
- 42:53But I do think it's it's really interesting.
- 42:56But yeah, Mitch Sherman and I are combining on a kind of a,
- 43:00you know, an examination, let's say, of series and where it's
- 43:05going. So that's going to come out
- 43:06tomorrow. Yeah, I saw something from Steve
- 43:08Sippler. I know you know his radio show.
- 43:11The quote on it yesterday is we all know that this freaking
- 43:14state hates Iowa because they beat us in everything.
- 43:17They're going to the second weekend of the tournament for
- 43:19the first time ever. And in your way, that bleep in
- 43:22Iowa, Hawkeyes. So it's absolutely legit, Doc.
- 43:27There's no time to talk football because we wouldn't be doing it
- 43:29justice. We'll save that for the next
- 43:32time you're able to join Trent and I.
- 43:34I will reach out. I know you're busy.
- 43:35Thanks for jumping on for a few minutes, Scott Dockerman.
- 43:38We look forward to that piece with you and Mitch.
- 43:40Thank you doc. Thanks for having me,
- 43:42appreciate. Good to talk to you.
- 43:43Scott Dockerman from The Athletic.
- 43:45Yeah. Did you see that from?
- 43:47Simple, I didn't know. Saying that, and in a way that
- 43:49bleeping Iowa Hawkeyes would not be something.
- 43:52Bring it on. Oh, this game is going to be
- 43:56great. It is, and it just adds to it.
- 43:57I mean, it was going to be great for Iowa to be in there, but but
- 44:00against Nebraska? And it's not like it's going
- 44:03away. I mean, Fred's not going.
- 44:04In no, I don't know, he signed. What did he sign through 2031?
- 44:08A new deal? You got a Iowa kid that's going
- 44:10over there and Colin Rice, who is leaving after his senior
- 44:13year, completes here from Waukee Northwest.
- 44:15So he'll be playing for the Huskers.
- 44:17The guy that. Was what was the tie there?
- 44:19Do you know just want to leave the state?
- 44:21No, I, I don't know about that. I mean, he had plenty of offers.
- 44:25I think it's Hoiberg, I mean. You want to play for Fred?
- 44:27OK. Absolutely.
- 44:28Yeah. I mean, he's a very talented
- 44:30offensive player. Yeah.
- 44:32It's a good place to go, absolutely.
- 44:34So I think it was kind of as simple as that.
- 44:36So he'll be over there. You'll have that another year.
- 44:38Price, Sanford, obviously you got that connection.
- 44:40What a year he had Trent. God, I was wrong on him.
- 44:43What shirt Peyton wear? He's at the game Thursday night.
- 44:48Oh, he's. Wearing Nebraska.
- 44:51Just a Price shirt though, right?
- 44:52Yes, yes. That's his little brother.
- 44:55I mean, apparently they're really, really close, right?
- 44:57Yes. So yeah, we'll see our 2 coming
- 45:02up next. We got some time for open
- 45:04phones. You want to jump aboard Tommy
- 45:06Birch, 125, Miller and Condon with you until 2:00 on the Iowa
- 45:10Sports Radio Network.
