- 0:55Speaker 1: songwriter Sarah Harrelson.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Hello, everyone, this is Sarah Harrelson, your host of Taking
- 1:00Speaker 3: a Walk Nashville. We are here at Country Radio Seminar
- 1:04Speaker 3: and I'm joined by rising country brother Sister Duo Juna
- 1:09Speaker 3: and Joey.
- 1:10Speaker 4: So.
- 1:10Speaker 2: After racking up millions of views online with their harmonies
- 1:14Speaker 2: and viral covers, they've taken that momentum to Nashville stages
- 1:17Speaker 2: and tours with artists like Morgan Wallin and Jason al Dean,
- 1:21Speaker 2: and now they're back with brand.
- 1:23Speaker 5: New music and their latest single, Stop Thinking.
- 1:25Speaker 2: It's out now, so we'll talk about the story behind
- 1:28Speaker 2: the song, their journey from viral videos to national tours, and.
- 1:32Speaker 5: What it's really like making music as siblings. June and Joey,
- 1:36Speaker 5: thank you so much for being on Taking a Walk
- 1:39Speaker 5: Nashville Today. Is this your first country radio seminar? No,
- 1:42Speaker 5: this is actually our fits six.
- 1:45Speaker 4: Yeah. I made around the East Hallsburg a couple of years.
- 1:48Speaker 5: Are you both from Tennessee originally?
- 1:51Speaker 6: No, we're both from South Florida originally.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Okay, Well, welcome and I'm loving your latest single, stopped thinking?
- 1:58Speaker 5: What inspired this song? Well, I wrote this song.
- 2:01Speaker 6: We wrote the song with Bradley Collins.
- 2:02Speaker 4: He's in a meeting New York timespresselling author and he
- 2:05Speaker 4: has Away with Words, And we.
- 2:07Speaker 5: Wrote this song about my best friend at the time.
- 2:10Speaker 4: She was going through a breakup with this she totally
- 2:13Speaker 4: hung over heels for and they you know, things didn't
- 2:17Speaker 4: work out, and she's like, I don't know what to
- 2:18Speaker 4: do something on him, Like every time I pulled through
- 2:20Speaker 4: a red light and I see the same kind of
- 2:22Speaker 4: model truck he's gonna I think it's him.
- 2:24Speaker 5: I freak out.
- 2:24Speaker 4: Or every time we try around this town and I
- 2:26Speaker 4: see all have a place that we did or place
- 2:28Speaker 4: that we went to, things that we did, and she's
- 2:31Speaker 4: kind of torn apart by this. So I were a
- 2:33Speaker 4: song about it, and it's just kind of about the
- 2:37Speaker 4: things you gotta do to move on.
- 2:38Speaker 5: You know what I'm saying.
- 2:39Speaker 7: It's got a very jazzy kind of country vibe to it.
- 2:43Speaker 7: The violin the guitar part was it was originally a
- 2:46Speaker 7: guitar part and I had came up with it, but
- 2:48Speaker 7: then it was turned into a violin part.
- 2:50Speaker 8: So cool.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Yeah, it had to be so much fun working on
- 2:53Speaker 2: the studio together and being a brother.
- 2:56Speaker 5: Sister duo is unique.
- 2:58Speaker 2: What's the best part of being siblings and making music together.
- 3:02Speaker 4: I think we kind of are like on the same page,
- 3:06Speaker 4: like just metally, like you kind of finished each other's sentence,
- 3:09Speaker 4: like in riots.
- 3:10Speaker 5: Well, I have the same idea.
- 3:11Speaker 4: We're able to build off each other's ideas, and what's
- 3:14Speaker 4: great is that we both bring them.
- 3:15Speaker 5: With things on the table.
- 3:16Speaker 4: If like Joey is very strong like with guitar and
- 3:18Speaker 4: melodies and coming up with full riffs and things like
- 3:21Speaker 4: that in the song, like in the beginning and like
- 3:23Speaker 4: I'm very strong's lyrically also with the melodies. So we
- 3:26Speaker 4: can go come together with like our strengths and build
- 3:29Speaker 4: something like that's really awesome and that's cool and different.
- 3:32Speaker 8: Sean, Yeah, just.
- 3:33Speaker 7: Say, like create memories, Like tour is like my favorite
- 3:39Speaker 7: aspect of doing music.
- 3:41Speaker 8: And like I said, creating memories and.
- 3:43Speaker 6: Just always beat a right each other.
- 3:46Speaker 7: You know, nine percent of the time we're good. We
- 3:48Speaker 7: had that one percent while we're on like you know,
- 3:50Speaker 7: but we're pretty good.
- 3:52Speaker 5: Did you always grow up playing music together?
- 3:55Speaker 4: Yeah, pretty much. Since we first started. I was around
- 3:58Speaker 4: four years old and I was obsessed with the movie
- 4:00Speaker 4: goll To Rascals and I would watch that over and
- 4:03Speaker 4: over all my way to school and every morning, and
- 4:05Speaker 4: the Talent show scene with Darla and Alfalvau when they
- 4:08Speaker 4: sing the song out by Frank Sinatra. I learned it
- 4:11Speaker 4: and never formed it for yeah, on our coffee table.
- 4:13Speaker 4: I was like four, and that's what they started getting
- 4:16Speaker 4: into music lessons.
- 4:17Speaker 5: And then Joey joined me after being.
- 4:19Speaker 8: In the sports Yeah that was a big sports game.
- 4:21Speaker 4: And then we just we did a classic rock band.
- 4:24Speaker 4: We were like ten to thirteen. Then we moved on
- 4:26Speaker 4: to country music and we'd started writing and it just kind.
- 4:29Speaker 5: Of grew from there.
- 4:30Speaker 7: And we're still doing school because school is important and
- 4:34Speaker 7: our mom and I are like, yeah, I'm the school.
- 4:37Speaker 8: So we actually are doing We're going to Berkeley.
- 4:40Speaker 7: Online in Boston, so taking songwriting and music theory classes
- 4:45Speaker 7: and all sorts of things like that.
- 4:46Speaker 5: Yes, very cool.
- 4:47Speaker 2: And what's the biggest challenge of working with your sibling?
- 4:54Speaker 4: I would I mean, you know, just being siblings, like
- 4:58Speaker 4: sound Sime, you' siblings.
- 5:00Speaker 5: We brought each other all the time using gems.
- 5:01Speaker 6: You didn't need to break right, you make any me
- 5:04Speaker 6: time like yeah.
- 5:06Speaker 4: Like if you know when it happens and you just
- 5:08Speaker 4: take time pop singing, you ever and then rejoin coming.
- 5:10Speaker 8: You know what I'm saying.
- 5:11Speaker 6: Geez, kind of take a day day by day.
- 5:14Speaker 5: Do you write a lot of your songs together or apart?
- 5:17Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 5:17Speaker 5: I would say you write most of them together.
- 5:19Speaker 4: Sometimes we'll write individually or of the artists separately, but
- 5:23Speaker 4: I think mostly it's also.
- 5:24Speaker 5: Over Yeah, very cool.
- 5:27Speaker 2: And you both first started getting attention with your YouTube covers.
- 5:31Speaker 5: Did you expect your videos to take off? The way
- 5:34Speaker 5: they did on YouTube. Band and TikTok definitely not like.
- 5:38Speaker 6: When we first started.
- 5:39Speaker 4: We would pick a song that was like top ten,
- 5:42Speaker 4: something that was really trendy at the time. Then we
- 5:44Speaker 4: would you know, put our little twists on it and
- 5:46Speaker 4: go to the studio of a chord.
- 5:48Speaker 6: Master it and then film it and edit it.
- 5:50Speaker 4: Like it would take a long time, which is so
- 5:52Speaker 4: funny now the way that content has changed, like from
- 5:54Speaker 4: then screen now like did TikTok and everything, it would
- 5:57Speaker 4: take us like a week or two two, like get
- 6:00Speaker 4: a video down between like the recording and the editing,
- 6:03Speaker 4: and it just like exploded on YouTube. Our covers and
- 6:07Speaker 4: people really enjoyed them, and we would respond to comments
- 6:10Speaker 4: and do YouTube premieres and things like that. And now
- 6:13Speaker 4: it's like thirty seconds you get on the camera go
- 6:15Speaker 4: you thought, people want, let's short constant.
- 6:17Speaker 8: Then when we engaged, you know.
- 6:19Speaker 6: You know, so it's so different.
- 6:21Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, it definitely has changed.
- 6:24Speaker 2: And we talked about Joey said, you love touring together.
- 6:27Speaker 5: You both opened for artists like.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Morgan Wallen, Bailey Zimmerman, Jason Aldan.
- 6:32Speaker 5: What's the biggest thing you both.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Have learned from watching these artists perform.
- 6:37Speaker 8: Just how passionate they are.
- 6:39Speaker 7: And it's like very inspiring to watch artists grow because
- 6:43Speaker 7: they did this, they were in the same you know,
- 6:46Speaker 7: kind of shoes. We were doing CRS and doing a
- 6:48Speaker 7: bunch of interviews and growing, you know, progressively, And we
- 6:54Speaker 7: actually met Bailey Zimmerman.
- 6:55Speaker 8: He's like, he's such a cool guy.
- 6:56Speaker 7: He's the way that he acts on stage is the
- 6:59Speaker 7: same way when we first met him.
- 7:01Speaker 8: Like, everybody has their own, you know, their own kind
- 7:05Speaker 8: of niche.
- 7:06Speaker 7: So it's just cool to see different artists and how
- 7:08Speaker 7: they you know, go on with their with their music career.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Very cool. Yeah, I can't wait to see what stages
- 7:15Speaker 2: you guys take next. So you open up for next
- 7:18Speaker 2: and I'm excited to see you guys perform at nash
- 7:20Speaker 2: House later.
- 7:21Speaker 5: I'll have some more questions for you then.
- 7:24Speaker 2: But my last question for now, we're on taking a
- 7:26Speaker 2: walk Nashville. So for each of you, if you could
- 7:29Speaker 2: take a walk with anyone in Nashville, who would it
- 7:31Speaker 2: be with?
- 7:33Speaker 5: Oh, wow, that's great question.
- 7:34Speaker 6: I would probably say I'd probably say Hardy.
- 7:39Speaker 4: I think he's like a great writer, agen so much
- 7:42Speaker 4: jour energy, like and he's such a cool guy. He's
- 7:45Speaker 4: just cooick like, he's a cool guy, and I want
- 7:48Speaker 4: to like learn more about his writing and how we
- 7:50Speaker 4: you know, he is his person in his career and
- 7:53Speaker 4: his journey that you might not hear from him in
- 7:55Speaker 4: an interview or something.
- 7:57Speaker 6: When you hear the deep stuff.
- 7:59Speaker 8: Yeah, it's say, uh.
- 8:01Speaker 7: Yeah, maybe Ernest any any really good songwriter or actually
- 8:06Speaker 7: go oh.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Yeah, actually girl would be a great versions a wat story.
- 8:10Speaker 4: So we jogging a mild Yeah, we'd be writing a
- 8:13Speaker 4: song lies walking.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Right, we'll be right back with more of the Taking
- 8:17Speaker 1: a Walk Nashville podcast. Welcome back to Taking a Walk Nashville.
- 8:26Speaker 2: So what's the dynamic like being together in the studio
- 8:28Speaker 2: recording your songs.
- 8:30Speaker 6: It's it's fun.
- 8:31Speaker 5: It's all a great time.
- 8:32Speaker 4: We're just so passionate and excited about these new songs.
- 8:36Speaker 4: We can't wait to get in there and just put
- 8:38Speaker 4: them out.
- 8:39Speaker 7: It's more to add because we have like an extra person,
- 8:42Speaker 7: so it's like, oh you should do that, or no,
- 8:44Speaker 7: oh we'll add this. Yeah, So there's just more opportunities
- 8:47Speaker 7: like adding ad loops. Yeah, just adding things to the
- 8:51Speaker 7: song here and there throughout the studio.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Well, it's going to make it more fun, and it's
- 8:55Speaker 2: got to be so much fun as a brother and
- 8:57Speaker 2: sister going on the road together. Do you guys have
- 8:59Speaker 2: some upcoming shows this year people can look forward to.
- 9:02Speaker 4: Yeah, we have some upcoming shows for the year, but
- 9:06Speaker 4: right now, we just actually opened up a songwriting venue
- 9:08Speaker 4: in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, and.
- 9:10Speaker 6: We're really excited about that. We play there a lot.
- 9:12Speaker 4: We have some writers come through and some artists and
- 9:15Speaker 4: we hop on stage with them and collaborate and then
- 9:17Speaker 4: we get their numbers and work at.
- 9:19Speaker 6: Them, which has been a really great way to make connections.
- 9:22Speaker 7: Yeah, we're also looking forward to Key Wes songwriters that's
- 9:24Speaker 7: who in May. It's gonna be like our fifth or
- 9:26Speaker 7: six one and you know, meeting those songwriters down there
- 9:29Speaker 7: and them telling their stories about the songs, the songs
- 9:32Speaker 7: that we listen to on the radio is just really
- 9:33Speaker 7: inspiring and it's just a fun time.
- 9:35Speaker 5: So yeah, yeah, it'll be fun.
- 9:37Speaker 2: And as you mentioned, in addition to being artists and songwriters,
- 9:40Speaker 2: you guys are also restaurant owners, which I don't know
- 9:43Speaker 2: how you have time to do that. You just opened
- 9:46Speaker 2: a restaurant around here and good let's fill just north
- 9:49Speaker 2: of Nashville, and this restaurant has live music, great food,
- 9:52Speaker 2: and craft at cocktails. What inspired you guys to get
- 9:57Speaker 2: into the restaurant industry, especially at such a young age.
- 10:00Speaker 4: Well, our dad is very big into real estate. He
- 10:04Speaker 4: just likes looking and shopping around. So my mommy, this
- 10:07Speaker 4: is why we moved like one hundred times when we
- 10:08Speaker 4: were younger.
- 10:09Speaker 6: We never had like a childhood home because we lived in.
- 10:12Speaker 8: Like a hundred daybe It was so many tis.
- 10:15Speaker 4: So my dad found this little building that he kind
- 10:18Speaker 4: of fell in love with and Koltz build and it
- 10:19Speaker 4: was actually owned by Stu Phillips and he was an
- 10:23Speaker 4: icon at a legend who just recently passed away unfortunately.
- 10:26Speaker 4: And we actually named a signature cocktail after him, Old Fashioned,
- 10:30Speaker 4: and it's our most popular drink.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Oh wow, And Juna, you have a cocktail name that
- 10:34Speaker 2: for you too, Right, It's called the Juniah Drop.
- 10:37Speaker 7: I was on the menu but they took it off.
- 10:40Speaker 6: It was like a pumpkin spice drink. But we thought
- 10:41Speaker 6: that was mean.
- 10:42Speaker 5: But people can still like order you off menu.
- 10:46Speaker 6: Right on the stage ordered him on the scene.
- 10:49Speaker 4: So he bought this building and we kind of just
- 10:51Speaker 4: started doing it We didn't really have a plan. He
- 10:54Speaker 4: just bought it and we thought of some cool ideas
- 10:57Speaker 4: for the name and the design of it, and here
- 10:59Speaker 4: we are.
- 11:00Speaker 7: Yeah, I'm looking forward to you know, just going on
- 11:02Speaker 7: tour and then coming back to the restaurant and everybody
- 11:04Speaker 7: there is just family to us. So it's good to
- 11:08Speaker 7: you know, talk to our coworkers and really have a
- 11:11Speaker 7: sort He's good.
- 11:12Speaker 8: You could just see that like in the upcoming years.
- 11:15Speaker 6: So you need to come home too. Yeah, you just
- 11:16Speaker 6: hop up on stage when you get back there. Exactly.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Well, you both are also ambassadors do a lot of
- 11:23Speaker 2: charity work for One Tree Planted. This plants and restores
- 11:27Speaker 2: trees around the world, and you run a food tribe
- 11:30Speaker 2: each year. Why is giving back so important for you both?
- 11:33Speaker 4: It's so important to us because our dad, he's in
- 11:35Speaker 4: the protoce business in Florida, and so it really means
- 11:39Speaker 4: a lot to us to give back through that and
- 11:41Speaker 4: through him and his business. And the One Tree Planet
- 11:44Speaker 4: is also a great organization. You know, we're from Florida,
- 11:47Speaker 4: and that's got the everybody's the trees, the palm trees,
- 11:49Speaker 4: it's got all sorts of agriculture and nature. There Florida.
- 11:54Speaker 4: So that just means a lot to us and where
- 11:55Speaker 4: we grew up and where we came from. So it's
- 11:57Speaker 4: awesome to be able to work with them.
- 11:59Speaker 7: Yeah, we love to keep our world in society, healthy, cleansants,
- 12:03Speaker 7: They care about that stuff.
- 12:05Speaker 6: Yeah, that's beautiful.
- 12:06Speaker 2: And you also run an anti bullying campaign every October correct, Yeah, definitely.
- 12:11Speaker 4: We actually went to the UK and did a school
- 12:14Speaker 4: tour for a couple of months. We talked to students
- 12:18Speaker 4: and did a speech on anti bullying and mental health,
- 12:21Speaker 4: and then we played them some country music and a
- 12:22Speaker 4: lot of them was their first concert, and a lot
- 12:25Speaker 4: of them had stories to share with us, and it
- 12:27Speaker 4: was so inspiring and it was such an honor to
- 12:30Speaker 4: be able to talk to these kids one on one
- 12:31Speaker 4: and just see where they're out, meet them where they're
- 12:34Speaker 4: at mentally, and just be there for them to talk
- 12:36Speaker 4: to them like normal people.
- 12:37Speaker 6: Where they look at us on stage you know and
- 12:39Speaker 6: they're like.
- 12:39Speaker 4: Oh, I want to be like yo one day, or
- 12:41Speaker 4: they look at us like idols, you know, but then
- 12:43Speaker 4: we talked to them like real people, you know, say
- 12:46Speaker 4: we're here for you.
- 12:47Speaker 5: Whenever you need.
- 12:47Speaker 6: Yeah, we reach out to people on Instagram all the time.
- 12:50Speaker 6: They reach out to us about their stories and in
- 12:52Speaker 6: need of help or just reassurance. And were we talked
- 12:55Speaker 6: to fans personally all on the daily all day.
- 12:57Speaker 7: We still get dms from them today and like you
- 13:00Speaker 7: changed their lives, so like really it's home.
- 13:02Speaker 6: It's nice to talk to them just like kid to kid.
- 13:05Speaker 4: You know, we did this couple of years ago, so
- 13:06Speaker 4: we were the same age as they were, you know,
- 13:08Speaker 4: so it's nice to be able to sit down and
- 13:10Speaker 4: come to reality and be like, we have been your shoes.
- 13:13Speaker 5: You know.
- 13:13Speaker 4: We have seen people in our school that when we
- 13:15Speaker 4: went to school go through the similar things and we
- 13:17Speaker 4: have personally.
- 13:18Speaker 6: So it's nice to be able to talk to everybody. Yeah,
- 13:22Speaker 6: that's so special.
- 13:23Speaker 5: It's so important to connect with the fans too.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, So I have some fun rabid fire questions
- 13:30Speaker 2: for you guys before these These are easy though, And
- 13:33Speaker 2: then on taking a walk in Nashville, we've never really
- 13:37Speaker 2: done a format where we have our guests play live
- 13:41Speaker 2: music after, so you guys will be the first ones
- 13:43Speaker 2: to do that and people need to hear your songs
- 13:46Speaker 2: on stage. But at first, I have some fun rabid
- 13:49Speaker 2: fire sibling questions. So you guys can just let me
- 13:52Speaker 2: know what you think. But first one who is more
- 13:55Speaker 2: likely to eat all the snacks backstage?
- 13:59Speaker 8: No events?
- 14:00Speaker 6: Sorry Joey, for sure you guys are protein like bars.
- 14:03Speaker 6: You will see him.
- 14:05Speaker 8: Yeah, no, it's not snacks. It's more like ground beef.
- 14:09Speaker 4: And runs the weird hell thing like.
- 14:13Speaker 5: Definitely joining.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Well, who is more likely to spend more time on
- 14:17Speaker 2: their phone?
- 14:19Speaker 8: Her phone is dead like a one hour into the day.
- 14:22Speaker 7: I'm like, your phone, She's like, I gotta charge my
- 14:23Speaker 7: Phone'm like, it's eight o'clock in the morning.
- 14:25Speaker 6: Would you can spend how my photo?
- 14:27Speaker 5: I want to do it.
- 14:27Speaker 4: It's always dead because I forget to charge it at night,
- 14:30Speaker 4: Like I keep forgetting to put an extension cor in
- 14:32Speaker 4: my rooms and was like, half, I'm just forgetting.
- 14:34Speaker 7: My charger is so small. I have to like, you know,
- 14:38Speaker 7: bring it over to bed and he doesn't reach.
- 14:39Speaker 4: You're right about to go to sleep and your men
- 14:41Speaker 4: you're cozy. The last thing you want to do is
- 14:43Speaker 4: like get out of there.
- 14:44Speaker 8: I charge your phone.
- 14:45Speaker 6: So that's that's why it's always dead.
- 14:47Speaker 5: But well, who is more organized on the road?
- 14:52Speaker 6: Probably me, I would say, just everything you we always do.
- 14:55Speaker 6: You never like too joy because this stuff is just
- 14:58Speaker 6: the birth place.
- 14:59Speaker 4: Every time we keys like Dooey's shirts, or like around
- 15:03Speaker 4: or like his.
- 15:04Speaker 6: He carries a big jug of water. He drinks out
- 15:06Speaker 6: of this gallon water. It's just always in the way.
