- 0:00Sometimes it's not the Giants. That undo.
- 0:02Us. It's the little.
- 0:03Things. So many of us make a great fuss
- 0:06of matters of small consequence. We are so.
- 0:08Easily offended is life. Going to be.
- 0:11Fair for. Us.
- 0:13No, it's not. Because of Christ's.
- 0:16Atonement. All that is unfair.
- 0:19About this life is resolved. The question for us?
- 0:22Is what will we do today? The.
- 0:25Battle really is the Lord's. We just have to look to Him.
- 0:35So for the next. Two classes we're going to be
- 0:37looking at the life of David. His story is so.
- 0:40Epic that Amazon is making a multi season.
- 0:43Show about it called The House of David and I've really been
- 0:47enjoying it. The story of David.
- 0:49In the Bible is. 43 chapters long from first.
- 0:53Samuel 16. All the way to.
- 0:55First Kings chapter 2 and it's interesting this is the longest.
- 1:00Account Historical account of a. Single life in ancient near
- 1:05eastern. Literature.
- 1:06God. Really wants us to.
- 1:07Learn from David. But there's a problem.
- 1:10Because there's 43 chapters. About David's life and just
- 1:14because of expediency and needing to.
- 1:17Cover a lot of text. The Come Follow Me chapters they
- 1:20only include 10. Of the 42 chapters.
- 1:24From David's life. So unless you read.
- 1:26The whole account. You're going to miss a lot of
- 1:29subplots and interesting details that I think.
- 1:32You don't want to miss SO. I want to start.
- 1:33Out with an invitation. Get a modern Bible.
- 1:36Translation and try reading. Or listening to 1st.
- 1:39Samuel 16 all. The way through First Kings
- 1:41chapter 2 I actually tried this for myself while I was driving
- 1:45to the airport. I was loving the story so much,
- 1:47actually missed the. Exit to the airport.
- 1:49It was so intriguing. Seriously, this is a.
- 1:51Captivating story. Now before we dive into some of
- 1:54the. Stories of David let's.
- 1:56Set the context. David lived around 1000 BC and
- 2:00when he was. The child Saul was the king.
- 2:03Later, when David becomes king, he'll solidify the unification
- 2:08of the 12. Tribes of Israel and he'll also
- 2:10capture Jerusalem. It's under David.
- 2:12That Jerusalem becomes the political and.
- 2:15Spiritual Capital. Of God's people.
- 2:18Now, because there's 40. 3 chapters we won't have time to.
- 2:21Talk about every aspect of David.
- 2:23'S life, but. Today we'll focus on.
- 2:25Four stories, some of. Which are well known and some of
- 2:28which you. Might have never heard of
- 2:29before. They're David and Goliath, David
- 2:32and McCall, David and Abigail and David and Jonathan.
- 2:35So let's start with. David and Goliath.
- 2:37This is probably. The most well known.
- 2:39Stories having to do with David. I think we're familiar with the
- 2:42scene the Philistines have come to.
- 2:44Attack the. Israelites, and rather than
- 2:46everyone, didn't join in hand. To hand combat.
- 2:49A giant named Goliath. Offered a challenge.
- 2:52He said to the Israelites choose.
- 2:53A man and have him come down to me.
- 2:55If he's able to. Fight and kill me.
- 2:57We will become your subjects. But if I overcome him and kill
- 3:01him, you will become. Our subjects and serve us.
- 3:05So it sounds like a. Great way to save a lot of
- 3:07bloodshed. But there's one problem.
- 3:10Goliath is enormous. We read in the King James that
- 3:13Goliath was. 6 cubits in a. Span, which is about 9 feet 9
- 3:18inches tall. Now a quick.
- 3:19Nerdy detour, the old. Testament is coming from the
- 3:22Masoretic text, which if you. Remember from our very first.
- 3:25Class is a. Hebrew version of the Old
- 3:28Testament, dating to about the year. 1000 AD, so the Masoretic.
- 3:32Text says that Goliath. Was 6 cubits in a span, but in
- 3:35some Bible translations you might read Goliath being a
- 3:38different height. That's because the.
- 3:40Septuagint, which is the Greek translation of the.
- 3:44Hebrew says that Goliath was 4. Cubits in a span about 6 foot 9
- 3:50inches tall. And what's?
- 3:51Interesting is that? The Dead Sea Scrolls, which were
- 3:53only discovered a few decades ago, agree with the Septuagint,
- 3:58but for our purposes. Either way, Goliath is.
- 4:01Still a giant. Because at the time.
- 4:03The average Israelite male. Was.
- 4:05Barely 5 feet tall, so Goliath towers over of them.
- 4:09And he's not just tall, he has this.
- 4:10Crazy awesome equipment, we read he wore a bronze helmet on his.
- 4:15Head and wore a coat of. Scale armor of bronze weighing
- 4:19about 125 lbs. I don't even think I could.
- 4:22Lift 120. £5 let alone. Wear 125 lbs on his legs.
- 4:26He. Wore bronze Greaves.
- 4:29These would be like. Really sweet shin guards.
- 4:31And a bronze. Javelin was slung on his.
- 4:33Back his spear shaft. Was like a weaver's rod.
- 4:37And it's iron. Point weighed about. 15 lbs.
- 4:40So a weaver's rod is the. Thick, heavy beam.
- 4:43It's not the kind of thing that you normally.
- 4:45Carry around. And think about the.
- 4:47Point of the spear weighing. 15 lbs.
- 4:50Picture the scene Goliath. Strutting around in his armor.
- 4:55No wonder the Israelites are afraid the.
- 4:57Text says on hearing the Philistines words Saul and.
- 5:00All the Israelites were. Dismayed and terrified.
- 5:05Then comes David. David was the youngest of
- 5:08Jesse's sons. A.
- 5:09Boy who tended his. Father's sheep, he.
- 5:13Wasn't even in the. Army.
- 5:14He's basically a glorified Uber Eats delivery boy who's bringing
- 5:19bread and cheese to his brothers and while he's.
- 5:22Delivering the food. He hears Goliath taunts.
- 5:25So there's a. Contrast a giant encased.
- 5:28In. Bronze versus a boy.
- 5:30And I love how Timothy Keller points out that.
- 5:32The source of strength for Goliath and David is very
- 5:38different. Goliath has a lot of natural
- 5:40powers and abilities, and he's got a lot of what we might call
- 5:42technology. Backing him up, that's.
- 5:45His source of strength? Goliath.
- 5:47Isn't afraid, He thinks nothing can hurt him.
- 5:50And maybe. Sometimes we ourselves are in a
- 5:52similar. Situation.
- 5:53Everything's going great. In our lives, we're happy, we're
- 5:56content. We can do anything.
- 5:57Nothing can hurt. Us until it does.
- 5:59And we wake up one day and find out that good health.
- 6:01Can turn to bad. Health for.
- 6:02Us or for someone? That we love and we find out
- 6:05that all the. Stuff that we thought was.
- 6:07Protecting us from pain. Can't protect us anymore, so the
- 6:11way of Goliath. Could work for a.
- 6:13Time, but it never lasts. Contrast Goliath's source of
- 6:18strength with David's over and over.
- 6:21David says the Lord will deliver.
- 6:24Me, I come to. Thee in the name of the.
- 6:26Lord of hosts, this day will the Lord deliver.
- 6:29Thee into my hands I will smite thee, that all the earth may
- 6:33know that. There is a God in Israel, and my
- 6:36favorite, the battle is the Lord's.
- 6:40We've talked. About 1 liners.
- 6:41Before have you marked? That one.
- 6:42Liner in your scriptures, I mean that's.
- 6:45Powerful David's at the level where.
- 6:47We all. Want to be.
- 6:48When you get to where David is you.
- 6:50Can face the Giants in your life with confidence.
- 6:53Because you really believe the battle.
- 6:55Is the Lord's. And I think you can still have.
- 6:58This. Kind of faith even in our modern
- 7:01challenging. Society I think about.
- 7:03A man he was. 48 years old and he had a huge task in front of
- 7:07him. He was the president of a
- 7:09junior. College.
- 7:10And he was given the task of. Turning it into a four year
- 7:14university. It was difficult.
- 7:16By all accounts, and. Especially because there could
- 7:18have been people in the local community.
- 7:20Who were opposed to the change when one of his.
- 7:23Colleagues on the transition team asked him.
- 7:24President, are you scared? He responded.
- 7:27If I thought we had to execute. This transition, relying
- 7:30exclusively upon our own experience in our own judgment.
- 7:33Then I would be terrified. But.
- 7:35We will have help. From heaven because we know who
- 7:38is in charge and that we are not alone then.
- 7:40No, I am not scared. That's the spirit David had when
- 7:45he faced Goliath. And it's the Spirit.
- 7:47Of another David too, David A Bednar.
- 7:50Who led the transition? From Rick's College.
- 7:53To BYU Idaho and I think it's possible for us to develop this
- 7:56David like faith. It happens line.
- 8:00Upon line, not overnight. But small, simple experiences.
- 8:04Build. That's how it was for David,
- 8:06too. He said when a lion or bear came
- 8:09and carried off a sheet from the flock, I.
- 8:11Rescued the sheet. From its mouth.
- 8:13When it turned. On me I seized.
- 8:15It by its hair struck it and killed it.
- 8:17I have killed both the. Lion and the Bear this
- 8:21uncircumcised Philistine will be like.
- 8:24One of them. Small experiences.
- 8:26We have in our. Lives can help us.
- 8:29And I know sometimes this won't sound very optimistic, but.
- 8:31Sometimes in our lives, it might.
- 8:33Feel like we're. Facing a Goliath, but really
- 8:36it's the lion or the bear. We're facing.
- 8:40Preparing us for even bigger challenges ahead.
- 8:43I don't say this to have anyone be gloomy.
- 8:46Or think, Oh no, what's to come? Because in the.
- 8:49Strength of the Lord. We can do all things and we can
- 8:52have. True confidence in God no matter
- 8:54what the outcome is, so David declared.
- 8:58The battle is the Lord's. I want you to imagine a person
- 9:02who. Faces serious challenges.
- 9:05What would? Change in their life if they.
- 9:08Deeply, truly believed that the Lord would fight their battles
- 9:12for them. I fall a lot into the trap of I
- 9:16have to do it all and if I don't do it all right then it's all
- 9:19going to fail. But I can rest then and say I
- 9:22have done everything that I can do and I know that you have this
- 9:26battle. What I have done is enough.
- 9:28Will you consecrate that effort to the victory?
- 9:33Thank you. What we go through in this life
- 9:36isn't just about this life, it's about eternity and learning to
- 9:41put our trust in the Lord enough to give us that kind of
- 9:45strength. The kind of strength we would
- 9:47need to battle a Goliath is not only going to make us stronger
- 9:50for ourselves and for our families, but for our eternal
- 9:54lives. Thank you.
- 9:56So we don't want to be like Goliath.
- 9:59We do want to be. Like David, But what?
- 10:02Happens on days when we're neither.
- 10:04Because I'll be honest, a lot of times I'm like Saul, dismayed
- 10:08and terrified. And when Saul was.
- 10:10Terrified, he looked to a deliverer.
- 10:13For Saul the deliverer was David, and for.
- 10:16US. When we're dismayed and
- 10:17terrified, the deliverer isn't David, it's his descendant.
- 10:22Jesus Christ. David looked like a very
- 10:24unlikely hero. Christ was the same.
- 10:28Speaking about him, Isaiah said there was no beauty in him that
- 10:31we should. Desire him, but Jesus is the
- 10:33truer and better David. David traveled to the Valley of
- 10:38Elah to. Face Goliath.
- 10:40Jesus walked. Through the Valley of the
- 10:42Shadow. Of death setting us.
- 10:44Free from captivity. So think about your life.
- 10:47Who are you today? If we're Goliath, it's time to
- 10:51repent. Of trusting in my own strength
- 10:53of. Thinking I can do everything if
- 10:55I'm like Saul, dismayed and terrified, I can remember the
- 10:58greater David has already won the victory.
- 11:02If you're David, you deeply. Know.
- 11:04The battle. Really is the Lord's we just
- 11:07have. To look to him.
- 11:09Now the story of David and Goliath.
- 11:10It's really famous, but this next story, the story of.
- 11:13David and Mchall. Much less famous.
- 11:15In fact, I recently asked a group of.
- 11:17About 50 people. How many of you?
- 11:18Have heard the story. David and Bathsheba almost.
- 11:22Every hand went up. But when I asked who's heard the
- 11:24story of David and his first? Wife Mchall Almost no.
- 11:28Hands went up, although if you're watching the House of
- 11:31David series. That might change.
- 11:33Over time, people, the. Story might become.
- 11:35Better well known. But let's discuss.
- 11:38Shortly after David slew Goliath, the.
- 11:41Woman sang to 1. Another as they made merry, Saul
- 11:44has killed his. Thousands and David his 10.
- 11:48Thousands. Saul did not like this song, but
- 11:52we read that Me Call Saul's daughter.
- 11:56Loved David. It's like Romeo and Juliet, boy.
- 11:59Meets girl but. The parents hate each other.
- 12:01Saul is really jealous. Of David.
- 12:05And so he. Decides to use Mccall's love for
- 12:07David. To set a trap, Saul.
- 12:10Sent some of his. Servants to tell David Oh,
- 12:14Saul's daughter. Is in love with you.
- 12:16Saul wants you to. Marry his daughter.
- 12:18David was surprised, he said. Do you think it's a small thing
- 12:21to become the? King's son-in-law.
- 12:23I'm only a. Poor man.
- 12:26I don't have enough. Resources to give a dowry for
- 12:29the King's daughter. That was all part of Saul's
- 12:31plan. Saul told the servants to tell
- 12:33David the king desireth not any dowry, just 100 foreskins.
- 12:39Of the Philistines to be avenged of the King's enemies.
- 12:43So Saul's plan is that David's? Going to go out attack the.
- 12:45Philistines, David's. Going to get killed.
- 12:48Problem solved. But instead we read.
- 12:50David arose and went, he and his men and slew.
- 12:52Of the Philistines, 200. Men.
- 12:55And David brought their foreskins.
- 12:56And gave them in. Full number.
- 12:58To the King. Now maybe we're.
- 13:00Starting to understand why this is a lesser known story we often
- 13:04talk. About Ammon chopping off the
- 13:05arms and giving them to the kings, but.
- 13:08The Story of. Foreskins being delivered to
- 13:10Saul. Maybe don't share that in
- 13:11Primary. So Saul is surprised, but what
- 13:15can he? Do right?
- 13:16So we read Saul gave David McCall his daughter to wife, and
- 13:20again we read McCall. Loves.
- 13:23David it's an amazing love story.
- 13:25Boy meets girl girl. Falls in love with.
- 13:27Boy boy gets 200 and. Foreskins in the Philistines.
- 13:31What could go wrong? But in the very next chapter,
- 13:34Saul. Continues to be angry with
- 13:36David. He wants to kill him and McCall
- 13:38finds out about it. So.
- 13:40She helps David escape through a window and then tells the.
- 13:43Soldiers that David is sick to stall for time she creates a.
- 13:47Fake David using goat hair and she even puts a goat.
- 13:51Liver under the blanket. So it kind of looks like David
- 13:53is moving a little bit. It's sort of like.
- 13:56Ferris Bueller's Day Off So McCall stalls the soldiers and
- 14:01David escapes, and David is safe for the day.
- 14:04But the problems multiply. David is.
- 14:06Constantly on the run and Saul takes McCall and gives her to
- 14:11someone else. To marry David also while.
- 14:14He's on the run, marries 2 additional women.
- 14:16So now. Our star crossed lovers.
- 14:18Are both married, but two different people.
- 14:21Flash forward several years. By the time we get to the end of
- 14:23First Samuel, Saul is killed in a battle with the Philistines.
- 14:27And over time, David becomes. More and more powerful, but
- 14:31there are still some of. Saul's descendants.
- 14:33Who oppose him? So one day one of Saul's
- 14:36descendants generals comes to David and says I want to defect.
- 14:40I want to join your team, David says.
- 14:42Well, I will make an agreement. With you but I.
- 14:45Demand one thing of you do not come into my presence unless you
- 14:49bring me. Call daughter of Saul.
- 14:51When you come to see me now, I want.
- 14:53To acknowledge, there are a lot of details that we don't have in
- 14:57this. Story but I like.
- 14:58To imagine that McCall. Was happy.
- 15:01To come back to. David, who knows?
- 15:03Maybe. She liked her second.
- 15:04Husband a lot better. But let's imagine it's.
- 15:07Just this beautiful. Reunite can.
- 15:09You just see this. Is an amazing.
- 15:11Love story. They're back.
- 15:12Together everything's amazing. They conquered Jerusalem one.
- 15:16Day David's victorious. In battle and he.
- 15:18Brings the Ark of the Covenant. Into Jerusalem?
- 15:21What would? You do if you brought the Ark of
- 15:23the Covenant into Jerusalem. You'd have a dance.
- 15:25Party, of course we read David dance before the Lord with all
- 15:29his might. In fact, we.
- 15:30Actually have some footage of this event.
- 15:45Now if you're thinking to yourself.
- 15:47What? This looks like an awesome
- 15:48movie. I wish I could.
- 15:49Watch the whole thing. Wish granted.
- 15:51I have a link to it on the course website.
- 15:52There's actually. Multiple movies about David.
- 15:55And if you're wondering to yourself.
- 15:56Was David really? Dancing in his underwear?
- 15:59Probably not, but there was definitely something.
- 16:02Odd about his dancing because we read as the Ark of the.
- 16:06Lord came into the. City McCall, Saul's daughter,
- 16:10looked through a window. And saw King David leaping and
- 16:14dancing before the Lord, and she despised him.
- 16:18In her heart. So, as we'll see in a moment, me
- 16:21Hall. Felt like David was.
- 16:22Immodest in his dancing. So in my mind I.
- 16:25Picture David. He's.
- 16:26Coming home to bless his family, he's.
- 16:28So happy. He's like, hey guys, I'm home,
- 16:29everything. 'S great.
- 16:31Now me call. Has a choice.
- 16:33She could say, welcome home honey, give him a little kiss on
- 16:35the cheek, serve him some food next Monday night, bring out for
- 16:40the strength of youth the music and dancing section, you know,
- 16:42like have a little family home evening about it.
- 16:44She could have done that. But instead.
- 16:46She comes out swinging. How the King of Israel honored
- 16:49himself today uncovering. Himself today before the.
- 16:52Eyes of his. Servants, maids as any.
- 16:55Vulgar fellow might shamelessly uncover himself so the.
- 17:00Hebrew word here doesn't necessarily mean that.
- 17:02David is dressed immodestly. That's possible.
- 17:05It could also mean that he was. Just being immodest or vulgar
- 17:08for acting beneath his. Dignity in his dance.
- 17:11But either way, now David has a choice.
- 17:15He could say, honey, you're right, I'm so.
- 17:16Sorry, let me take. You out to dinner tonight, but.
- 17:20Instead, David hits back. He says the.
- 17:23Lord chose me in place of. Your father in all his
- 17:26household. To appoint me as.
- 17:29Prince over Israel. I will make myself yet more
- 17:31contemptible than this. The maids of.
- 17:34Whom you have spoken. By them.
- 17:37I shall be held in honor. How does the story end?
- 17:40We read. Therefore me call.
- 17:42The daughter of Saul. Had no child.
- 17:45Until the day of her death. The end.
- 17:48I shared this story once and someone was like oh man, they
- 17:50struggled. With infertility.
- 17:52That is so hard. Just to be.
- 17:54Clear that is not what was happening and I want to
- 17:56acknowledge there are different ways that you.
- 17:58Could read this story? Right.
- 17:59Maybe. David truly was dancing.
- 18:01Before the Lord in an. Awesome righteous way and
- 18:04Mccall's being. Really petty or maybe.
- 18:06David has been a. Jerk for years.
- 18:08And this is the. Straw that breaks.
- 18:10The camel's back. I'm not trying to maybe say
- 18:12exactly what. Happened in the story, but one
- 18:14thing's for sure at 1:00. Point in time, McCall.
- 18:17Loved David. And now there's an
- 18:19irreconcilable. Breach.
- 18:22Does anything like that happen today?
- 18:24President Hinckley said. So many of us make a great fuss
- 18:27of matters of small consequence. We are so easily offended.
- 18:31Happy is the. Man who can brush aside the.
- 18:33Offending remarks of another. And go on his way.
- 18:37The Story of. David and McCall reminds me of a
- 18:40story in the Book of Mormon you might remember, that Chief
- 18:43Captain Moroni was frustrated with.
- 18:45Pahoran Chief Captain More. Needed more men.
- 18:48More. Resources.
- 18:48And so he writes for Horn the scathing letter.
- 18:51He says if you don't send us some resources, we're going to
- 18:53come kill. You and.
- 18:54What more and I didn't know is that.
- 18:56Pahorn was on the run. He'd been driven out of the land
- 18:58of Sarah Hemlet. He was barely surviving.
- 19:00Himself. But Pahorn wrote back.
- 19:03And said in your. Epistle you have censured.
- 19:05Me, but it mattereth not I am not.
- 19:09Angry. Think about how.
- 19:11Different things would have been if.
- 19:13Pahoran would have responded like David.
- 19:17What if Pahoran? Wrote to Moroni and.
- 19:19Said well the Lord chose me instead of you to be the chief
- 19:22judge in the whole Nephite society could have erupted into
- 19:25civil war and think about how David's life.
- 19:28Might have been different if he had responded softly.
- 19:32Like Pahoran. So maybe the next time you or I,
- 19:35we find ourselves in a conflict situation, we can remember
- 19:38Pahoran's words. You have censured me.
- 19:41But it mattereth. Not I am not angry.
- 19:45Now here's a pro tip. For you.
- 19:46If you happen to be in an argument with a spouse, I
- 19:50recommend not using the exact. Phrase you have censured.
- 19:55Me, but it mattereth not I am not angry, I have.
- 19:58Learned from personal experience.
- 20:00That this can. Actually have the.
- 20:02Opposite of the intended. Effect.
- 20:04But we can't have the. Spirit of that phrase.
- 20:08In our hearts, and it's so important that we do because.
- 20:11David could slay Goliath. But he couldn't win.
- 20:15Mikhal's heart. And it's a reminder.
- 20:17For us, that sometimes. It's not the Giants that undo.
- 20:21Us. It's the little.
- 20:22Things so let's. Take a moment and just try
- 20:26something. Close your eyes.
- 20:28For a moment. And I'm going to ask you 3
- 20:29questions. First, think of a.
- 20:31Recent conversation where you. Wish you had responded
- 20:36differently. What was said?
- 20:40Second, think of one phrase or sentence.
- 20:43You could have spoken instead. Third what?
- 20:48Practical Habits. Could help you speak with
- 20:51Kinder. Words, what thoughts have.
- 20:55Come to your mind. I had to have a difficult
- 20:57conversation with a woman where we had a disagreement and of
- 21:02course I knew I was in the right and I was really hesitant
- 21:04because I'm not very good at those awkward difficult
- 21:07conversations. But I went out there and I said,
- 21:10you know, this isn't going to work and I hope you're OK with
- 21:14that. I walked away very
- 21:16uncomfortable. I thought, how do I do this
- 21:18better? So I started doing research and
- 21:21as a 70 year old, it's about time I learned how to do this.
- 21:25And I found out that it says start off with something nice,
- 21:29start off with something positive.
- 21:31So I've really just been thinking a lot about that.
- 21:34Like I could have said, thank you so much for what you said
- 21:38and the direction you wanted to go.
- 21:40That really says a lot about you.
- 21:43Can I offer a different opinion? Can we just talk about something
- 21:46else? It would have gone so much
- 21:49smoother. Thank you.
- 21:51So. The Story of David and.
- 21:53McCall it's tragic. It ends in a broken marriage.
- 21:56There's no happy ending. I love though that.
- 21:59The Book of Revelation. Promises a different ending.
- 22:04In a future wedding celebration, we read.
- 22:07The marriage of the. Lamb.
- 22:09Has come and his bride. Has made herself ready.
- 22:13Where McCall was forsaken by David.
- 22:16Christ, the true Bridegroom, will never abandoned.
- 22:20His bride us and where David failed McCall Jesus Christ is
- 22:26always. Interceding on our behalf.
- 22:30And in our next story, we see a. Powerful example of intercession
- 22:34as we look at David and Abigail. So here's the background.
- 22:38David's on the run from Saul. He and about 600 of his soldiers
- 22:43they're. Living in the wilderness.
- 22:44They're kind of like unpaid security guards protecting the
- 22:47shepherds of a wealthy. Man named Nabal So when it comes
- 22:51time to. Shear the sheep.
- 22:52David politely sends some. Messengers to Nabal.
- 22:55And says. When your shepherds were with
- 22:57us. We did not mistreat.
- 22:58Them therefore be favorable toward my men.
- 23:01Please give your servants. And your son, David, whatever
- 23:04you can find for. Them.
- 23:05But Nabal, whose name literally means fool?
- 23:08Makes you. Wonder what his mom was?
- 23:10Thinking when he was born. Nabal retorts.
- 23:12Who's David? Who's the son of Jesse?
- 23:14Why should I take my bread and water and my meat?
- 23:17And give it to men coming from. Who knows where?
- 23:19What's the? Wrong thing to say.
- 23:21To a hungry warrior with 600 armed men.
- 23:24So, David? Tells his soldiers each of you
- 23:26strap on your sword he's. Ready to wipe out?
- 23:28Nabal in his entire. Household, so the servants.
- 23:32Go to Abigail. And they tell her how Nabal is
- 23:34mistreating. David.
- 23:35Abigail makes a quick run to Costco, gets a bunch of fig
- 23:38cakes and comes to meet David. On the road.
- 23:41Now pause and think about this. This is a time when most women
- 23:44didn't leave the safety of their tents, let alone go out.
- 23:48To confront an army. David and his men.
- 23:50Could have easily ignored her or worse.
- 23:54But Abigail is so brave. And she gives what might be one
- 23:57of the most powerful. Speeches in the entire Old
- 23:59Testament, she bows before David and says.
- 24:02Upon me alone my. Lord, be the guilt.
- 24:07She says, look, my husband, he really doesn't know what he's.
- 24:08Talking about. I brought you this food, please
- 24:11accept it and also David. Remember, God has a bigger plan
- 24:15for you, she says. The Lord will certainly make you
- 24:18a sure house because you are fighting the battles of the
- 24:20Lord. And when the Lord has done to
- 24:22you according to all the good. That he has spoken, you shall
- 24:25have no cause of grief or pangs. Of conscience for having shed
- 24:30blood. Without cause so.
- 24:33Abacus like. Don't blow your future over some
- 24:35fool, David. You'll.
- 24:37I regret it. You.
- 24:38Have a Kingdom coming your way and David listens.
- 24:41He lowers his sword and says to Abigail, blessed be your good.
- 24:45Sense and. Blessed be you who?
- 24:47Have kept me. Today from blood, guilt.
- 24:49In other words, Abigail, thank you for saving me from myself.
- 24:52Your intercession has made all the difference.
- 24:55So Abigail goes home. Nabal, of course, is drunk when
- 24:58he sobers up. She tells him what she's done
- 25:01and the scripture says. That Nabal's heart turns to
- 25:03stone and he passes away. So when David hears that.
- 25:07While is. Dead, he writes Abigail and
- 25:08says, hey, do you want to get married?
- 25:10And they do. So we go from near disaster to
- 25:14marriage in just one chapter. It's almost like Provo.
- 25:19So what do we? Learn from.
- 25:20The story of Abigail First, the proverb says a soft answer turns
- 25:26away. Wrath Abigail just models what
- 25:29this looks like. But she doesn't just show us
- 25:31human tact, she points us. Forward to Jesus.
- 25:36Notice that Abigail said upon me.
- 25:39Alone, my Lord. Be the guilt.
- 25:41Had Abigail done anything wrong? No.
- 25:44She takes guilt upon herself that wasn't hers.
- 25:48Just like Jesus himself. Bore our sins in his body on the
- 25:52cross. What, Abigail?
- 25:54Did is called intercession? Intercession is when?
- 25:57There's a mediation. Between two parties, you're
- 26:00trying to bring about reconciliation.
- 26:02One person will step into the gap to.
- 26:05Make up the difference to create a bridge?
- 26:07Between two disagreeing parties, Abigail intercedes for Nabal's
- 26:12household, even though. Nabal is a.
- 26:14Fool and. Jesus Christ intercedes for us.
- 26:17Even when we are. Still sinners.
- 26:20In fact, the book of Hebrews. Says Christ is able for all
- 26:24time. To save.
- 26:25Those who approach God through Him, since He always lives to
- 26:31make intercession for them. And I want to step back and
- 26:34think about what. Might this look like for us
- 26:36today? Abigail interceded on behalf of
- 26:40NABAL. In our day and time, what would
- 26:43it look like for? A person to intercede.
- 26:46Today. Maybe it's a friend who speaks
- 26:50up on behalf of someone who isn't present.
- 26:52Or maybe it's a parent who's. Praying for a struggling child.
- 26:56Maybe it's the person. Who stays quiet?
- 26:59Instead of hitting back with a cutting remark.
- 27:02When we intercede for others, we're being like Abigail.
- 27:07We're being like Christ now. That takes us to the.
- 27:10Story of David. And Jonathan?
- 27:12And this could be. The.
- 27:14Greatest story of friendship. In all of scripture.
- 27:16But the two of them were not destined to be buddies.
- 27:19Remember, as David starts rising in prominence, Saul becomes
- 27:22jealous and. Hates him.
- 27:24Jonathan is. Saul's son.
- 27:27So Jonathan is next. In line for the throne once,
- 27:31David. Comes on the scene and not only
- 27:33threatens. Saul it threatens Jonathan.
- 27:36Jonathan could. Have followed the path of Saul,
- 27:38become jealous, tried to kill David, but he didn't instead.
- 27:42Jonathan became one in. Spirit with David.
- 27:46And he loved. Him as himself and Jonathan made
- 27:50a covenant with. David because he loved.
- 27:52Him as himself. It's so tender.
- 27:55And look at what happens next. Jonathan took off the.
- 27:58Robe he was wearing. And.
- 28:00Gave it to David. Along with his tunic and even
- 28:04his sword. Symbolically, Jonathan is
- 28:08saying, I acknowledge you are the true king of Israel.
- 28:11I surrender. All of my power, all of my.
- 28:14Authority. I give it to you.
- 28:15You take the throne. David.
- 28:17Not me and Jonathan. Held true to this covenant once
- 28:21they were. Having a family dinner.
- 28:23David was. Absent and Jonathan.
- 28:25Was trying to. Cover for him.
- 28:27Saul got so angry at Jonathan. That he said you.
- 28:30Son of a perverse and rebellious woman, Don't I know that you
- 28:33have sided with the son of Jesse to your own?
- 28:35Shame, and to the shame of your mother.
- 28:38Who bore you? As long as David.
- 28:40Lives on this earth, neither you nor your.
- 28:42Kingdom will be established now. Send someone to bring David to
- 28:46me. For he must die, Jonathan
- 28:48responded. Why should he be put to death?
- 28:51What has he done? Saul was so mad.
- 28:53That he picked. Up a spear and hurled it at
- 28:56Jonathan to kill him. This is a pretty.
- 28:58Dysfunctional family dinner here.
- 29:00But. Even with all of.
- 29:02This Jonathan doesn't quit on David.
- 29:06David's on the run. He's trying to.
- 29:08Avoid Saul. Jonathan.
- 29:10Figures out where David is and he goes to meet him.
- 29:12Note this beautiful verse. Jonathan went to David and.
- 29:16Helped him. Find strength in God.
- 29:20That's true friendship. That's how you know if someone
- 29:23is a really good friend because they strengthen you.
- 29:27In the Lord, Jonathan said Don't be afraid, my father will not.
- 29:31Lay a hand on you, you will be king.
- 29:34Over Israel and I will be second to you.
- 29:39Now think about that phrase. I will be. 2nd to you.
- 29:43The two of them made a covenant. Before the Lord.
- 29:47And that's the last time that David and Jonathan will see
- 29:50each. Other immortality.
- 29:52David's going to remain on the run and the fringes.
- 29:55Jonathan will die in a. Battle with the Philistines.
- 29:58Now, if this were just a story of great friendship, it would be
- 30:01worth talking about. There's.
- 30:02So many great lessons. Be a good friend.
- 30:06Be the kind of friend that strengthens.
- 30:08Others and God, but this? Is more than a.
- 30:11Story just of friendship, have you already?
- 30:14Seen Have you already? Seen the connections to Christ,
- 30:18Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and.
- 30:23Gave it to David. Along with his tunic and a
- 30:26sword, Timothy Keller points out that.
- 30:28Jonathan taking off his. Robe.
- 30:31Giving it to David. That symbolizes Jesus Christ who
- 30:34gave up his. Throne.
- 30:36To come to Earth. To save us.
- 30:39Jonathan in giving. Up his earthly powers.
- 30:42Points us to Christ. Who gave up his divine
- 30:45privileges? He took the humble position of
- 30:48a. Slave and was born.
- 30:50As a human being, when he appeared in human form, he
- 30:53humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal's death.
- 30:58On the cross. When Jonathan abandons his
- 31:01divine privileges, he. Gives up his.
- 31:04Throne so that David. Could rise.
- 31:06To the throne Jesus abandoned his divine privileges so we can.
- 31:10Rise in the resurrection. That's the whole good.
- 31:13News of the Gospel. Now we might ask ourselves, was
- 31:16this fair? Was it fair that.
- 31:18Jonathan lost his throne. No, it wasn't.
- 31:21Was it? Fair Christ had to.
- 31:24Suffer. No, it wasn't.
- 31:26Is life going to be? Fair for us?
- 31:29No, it's not. But Jonathan wasn't worried
- 31:32about fairness. And because of Jesus Christ, we
- 31:36don't need to worry about it either.
- 31:37Elder Quentin L Cook said. Because of Christ's.
- 31:40Atonement. All that is unfair.
- 31:42About this life is resolved. So in the conversation.
- 31:46Between David and Jonathan, we can see Jonathan as a type.
- 31:50Of Christ sacrificing for David like Christ sacrificed for us.
- 31:55But there's also another connection.
- 31:57To Christ in this. Friendship, because remember
- 32:00that David is. The Lord's anointed and the
- 32:03Word. Messiah means Anointed 1.
- 32:06So what happens if we look at this same conversation?
- 32:08But see David. As the type.
- 32:11Of Christ, Jonathan looks. To David Jonathan.
- 32:15Looks to Christ. And says.
- 32:17I will be second to you. You take.
- 32:21My throne, your number one. I will be second, Timothy Keller
- 32:27says. You have to do exactly what
- 32:29Jonathan did. You have to look.
- 32:32At Jesus Christ and you have. To say if.
- 32:34You are going to get in my life. I have to get.
- 32:36Off. The throne of my life.
- 32:38I can't just. Believe in you.
- 32:39I can't just. Try to emulate you.
- 32:41I have to. Give you my life.
- 32:42I have to take off my robe. I have to say you're first.
- 32:46You're absolute Lord of my life. Have we done what Jonathan did?
- 32:53Have we really said to the Lord? I will be. 2nd to you, you're.
- 32:58First, you're the Lord. Of my life.
- 33:01Now today we've seen. Four stories from David.
- 33:04All of which point? To Jesus Christ.
- 33:07And this is not surprising, because there's a powerful
- 33:10prophecy. About David and his.
- 33:13Connection with the Savior. In Second Samuel Chapter 7, God
- 33:17promised David. Your house and your.
- 33:18Kingdom will endure. Forever before me, your throne
- 33:22will be established. Forever.
- 33:25This promise is fulfilled. In David's descendant.
- 33:28Jesus Christ the. Savior's title, Son.
- 33:32Of David is. So important that Matthew.
- 33:35In the very first verse of the very verse chapter tells us of
- 33:39Jesus Christ the Son. Of David.
- 33:43Do we recognize him as the true king?
- 33:46There was a blind man. His name was.
- 33:48Bartimaeus, he heard that. Jesus was coming.
- 33:50He. Cried out, Jesus, thou son of
- 33:52David, have. Mercy on me.
- 33:54Even though Bartimaeus was blind, he recognized.
- 33:58Christ as the True. King, but not everyone did.
- 34:01One day Christ was talking with some Jewish.
- 34:04Authorities. He asked what think he of
- 34:06Christ. Whose son is he?
- 34:09They gave the correct answer, the son of David.
- 34:12But they didn't recognize. The person in front of him.
- 34:15As their king. When Christ rode into.
- 34:18Jerusalem on a donkey, the multitudes, cried Hosanna.
- 34:22To the son of David. Jesus Christ, the Son of.
- 34:25David is the true king, and one day.
- 34:29He's going to return. And we don't have to ask
- 34:31ourselves, what will we do? On that day because.
- 34:33We already know the answer. Every knee will bow before him.
- 34:38The question for us. Is what will we do today
- 34:42because. Every heart has a throne.
- 34:44Who sits on? Yours.
- 34:46You. Or the son of.
- 34:48David.
