- 1:39Speaker 3: we've had just kind of some juggles some things around
- 1:42Speaker 3: here just a little bit because of the weather situation.
- 1:44Speaker 3: We are going to bring in first now Metro News
- 1:47Speaker 3: mediorologist Brian Hughes, and Brian needs you to probably move
- 1:51Speaker 3: over here, sir, Thank you very much. I appreciate it.
- 1:57Speaker 3: We're kind of booking on the flyes we used to
- 1:58Speaker 3: say in the wrestling business. This year, we do want
- 2:01Speaker 3: to let you know. Coming up a little bit later
- 2:02Speaker 3: on Sonya Harrison, who's the CEO of the why w C. A.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Charles is gonna join. It's also Delaney Wells. It's gonna
- 2:10Speaker 3: stop by the studio as well. But we thought we
- 2:12Speaker 3: probably should start with weather today because I know, just
- 2:15Speaker 3: prior to us going on the air, there was an
- 2:17Speaker 3: emergency alert issued for a flash flood warning and areas
- 2:19Speaker 3: of Putnam County. So I'm gonna turn over to Brian
- 2:22Speaker 3: Hughes right now.
- 2:22Speaker 5: Brian, Well, what we have across parts of Putnam County
- 2:27Speaker 5: were rain totals in one hour that were around one
- 2:31Speaker 5: to one and a half inches worth of rain across
- 2:34Speaker 5: Putnam County. We're seeing the same thing as happened in
- 2:36Speaker 5: western Kanawk County as well as through the downtown Charleston area.
- 2:39Speaker 5: I mean, listen, I was just literally I walked from
- 2:42Speaker 5: my truck in here directly in the studio. There is
- 2:46Speaker 5: water in places that shouldn't be standing right now, and
- 2:49Speaker 5: it's filling all the drains. A matter of fact, as
- 2:51Speaker 5: I looked at my you know, just outside my boat,
- 2:54Speaker 5: the gully that was normally it's very very much a
- 2:58Speaker 5: trickle during the normal hours is full tilt going, you know,
- 3:03Speaker 5: one hundred miles an hour.
- 3:04Speaker 2: It seems like so what I would not.
- 3:06Speaker 5: Be surprised to see another flash club winning issue for
- 3:08Speaker 5: parts of Kanall County to be central western parts of
- 3:10Speaker 5: Kanawha County. But we've got this very heavy rainfall that's
- 3:14Speaker 5: passing by right now. This is very tropical atmosphere that
- 3:17Speaker 5: we're dealing with. I mean, this is moisture that is
- 3:19Speaker 5: part Atlantic as well as part Gulf. And so when
- 3:22Speaker 5: you combine those two and really what is a meandering
- 3:25Speaker 5: frontal boundary across the area, is that triggers everything that
- 3:29Speaker 5: we need to get some significant rainfall. So we've got
- 3:31Speaker 5: that right now. Matter of fact, when you look at
- 3:33Speaker 5: the radar, or when I look at the radars to say, radio,
- 3:37Speaker 5: you got some significant rain that's all across Kanawll County
- 3:41Speaker 5: up across the Systemville area, and it's just west of Summersville,
- 3:45Speaker 5: going to be across Montgomery and all across parts of
- 3:49Speaker 5: Lincoln County out Wayne as well Huntington and the Clear.
- 3:52Speaker 5: So we've got baseball that they can play for the
- 3:55Speaker 5: rest of the first games of ten o'clock. Yeah, So,
- 3:57Speaker 5: I mean it's gonna be soaking wet field, but they're
- 3:58Speaker 5: gonna be able to play.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Thankfully.
- 4:00Speaker 5: They can even get some dryers out there, and I
- 4:02Speaker 5: don't know if they particularly have them out there, but
- 4:04Speaker 5: they they'll be able to play baseball today without pretty
- 4:07Speaker 5: much any issue because all the showers and storms will
- 4:10Speaker 5: be out of there, but right now, very heavy rainfall
- 4:12Speaker 5: across Knawa County, and especially especially right now it is
- 4:16Speaker 5: literally the heaviest rain is in downtown Charleston at the moment.
- 4:18Speaker 3: So during right before the show, I was in the
- 4:22Speaker 3: green room and our guests st are a little bit delayed.
- 4:24Speaker 3: One of those particular because I understand that she got
- 4:27Speaker 3: caught in the rain and had to do a quick
- 4:30Speaker 3: wardrobe chap what I understand. But I but I was
- 4:33Speaker 3: sad in the green room out there, and I mean
- 4:36Speaker 3: I heard something like hitting up the side of the building.
- 4:38Speaker 3: I thought, what is that and I guess it was
- 4:40Speaker 3: that our gutter system here couldn't handle all the rain
- 4:43Speaker 3: which is banging against the side of the building.
- 4:46Speaker 5: Yeah, it was My dog got out, so so I
- 4:51Speaker 5: I mean I saw her on the cameras. She was
- 4:52Speaker 5: running after my truck. So I saw on the cameras.
- 4:55Speaker 5: I went back and when I got there, I was like, well,
- 4:57Speaker 5: that's the week I didn't know I had. So, I mean,
- 4:59Speaker 5: that's so that's what today. That's what the rain is
- 5:01Speaker 5: right now is going to be a rain that you
- 5:03Speaker 5: final leaked you never knew you had. That's how heavy,
- 5:06Speaker 5: it's coming out.
- 5:07Speaker 3: When should it start to wind down? Because if you
- 5:09Speaker 3: say they're gonna be playing baseball in Huntington at ten o'clock,
- 5:12Speaker 3: I mean here in the Kanaw Valley, Putnam County, when
- 5:14Speaker 3: should this start way down?
- 5:15Speaker 5: Well, heav the rainfall is ending. We've got light rain now, Winfield.
- 5:21Speaker 5: Rain is now lighter in Tays Valley, and it'll be
- 5:25Speaker 5: ending in those areas within the next about fifteen to
- 5:27Speaker 5: thirty minutes. And for downtown Charleston, the heaviest rain gonna
- 5:31Speaker 5: be here with this is maybe about ten more minutes
- 5:33Speaker 5: and then we'll still have some moderate rainfall. So over
- 5:35Speaker 5: the next hour to hour and a half we're gonna
- 5:37Speaker 5: see that clearing out. But the problem is he's just
- 5:41Speaker 5: dealing with it for now, so I wouldn't again, if
- 5:44Speaker 5: they don't issue a flash flow money, I'll be very
- 5:46Speaker 5: surprised because all the markers are there. I mean, we're
- 5:49Speaker 5: checking the boxes on everything as far as what we've
- 5:52Speaker 5: had over the last number of days, plus the one
- 5:55Speaker 5: hour rainfall total. As matter of fact, the newest newest
- 5:58Speaker 5: number that I have for uh, let's see the one
- 6:01Speaker 5: hour rainfall totals are. Yeah, I look in at and
- 6:05Speaker 5: inch and a half worth of rain in the last
- 6:07Speaker 5: hour that should trigger a flash flood flash flood warning
- 6:11Speaker 5: across t A right now, and they're gonna they're gonna
- 6:13Speaker 5: look at a number of things that particularly I'm not
- 6:16Speaker 5: looking at. But as far as you know what, we've
- 6:19Speaker 5: got very heavy rainfall that's more get its way across
- 6:22Speaker 5: the entire area.
- 6:23Speaker 3: So are there any certain areas that are of concern
- 6:26Speaker 3: right now? I mean, I know we got standing water
- 6:28Speaker 3: on the roads, But are there any certain areas that
- 6:29Speaker 3: we we know that there are that there are that
- 6:31Speaker 3: there's flight.
- 6:32Speaker 5: On well, I mean, all you have to do is
- 6:34Speaker 5: look at the oak Wood camera. If they swing that around,
- 6:36Speaker 5: you'll be able to see what's happening there on the Intersetate.
- 6:39Speaker 5: When I was driving on the Intertate, right there, there's
- 6:41Speaker 5: a there's a lower spot as you go by a
- 6:43Speaker 5: Laley Field and there's just a little dip there that
- 6:45Speaker 5: was people were swing down because I mean it was
- 6:47Speaker 5: entrenched in water. Actually a hydroplane going going back towards my,
- 6:51Speaker 5: uh my place just a little bit ago. In fact,
- 6:53Speaker 5: I hydra I'll tell you this. I call my best friend.
- 6:56Speaker 5: I told him, I said, Josh is a hydroplane like
- 6:58Speaker 5: it was winter. I mean, my truck went three different
- 7:01Speaker 5: ways and that was thankfully nobody else was around me.
- 7:04Speaker 5: But I mean, that's that's the kind of rain we're
- 7:06Speaker 5: dealing with right now. Just incredibly heavy rainfall.
- 7:09Speaker 3: But it is expected to wind down, that's what you're saying.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Yeah, it is.
- 7:16Speaker 5: I just got a note from from ritten Burton City
- 7:20Speaker 5: councilman and he says, hey, he's in Huntington now for
- 7:21Speaker 5: the baseball games GW versus Huntington. It's just stoped braying
- 7:24Speaker 5: and showing signs of clearing. So that's exactly what we.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Concerned though, that if we get because I know the
- 7:29Speaker 3: way this works sometimes, Brian, if we get a little
- 7:31Speaker 3: sunshine that it could actually not be beneficial a little later.
- 7:35Speaker 5: Well, the we do have drier air that's working its
- 7:38Speaker 5: way in from the west now late this afternoon.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Because I see I see.
- 7:42Speaker 5: A window of clearing that's going to be you know,
- 7:44Speaker 5: early afternoon, like mid day ish to early afternoon to
- 7:50Speaker 5: deeper in the afternoon. There could be enough heat that's
- 7:52Speaker 5: triggered maybe one or two stray thundershowers this afternoon and
- 7:56Speaker 5: go just briefly go into the early evening.
- 7:58Speaker 2: That's about it.
- 7:59Speaker 5: Tomorrow though, I mean, this is, this is, this is
- 8:02Speaker 5: not what we need for the heat in X value tomorrow.
- 8:05Speaker 5: I mean, this is going to just pump the heat
- 8:07Speaker 5: up because we get the heat along with this humidity
- 8:09Speaker 5: heating next value tomorrow ninety six to one hundred degrees.
- 8:13Speaker 5: Then I'm actually more concerned about Friday. Yeah, yeah, Friday
- 8:17Speaker 5: is severe weather possible. And of course you've got the
- 8:19Speaker 5: you know what's happening with the live on the levee.
- 8:21Speaker 5: That's the last thing we need, especially for the band
- 8:25Speaker 5: that we've just spend. Doctors are going to be there,
- 8:26Speaker 5: but so they're you know, they're already trying to make
- 8:30Speaker 5: some plans in case or just in case.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Yeah, it's all.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Looking good, but right we're just trying to get over
- 8:33Speaker 3: the next couple of hours.
- 8:34Speaker 6: Right.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Got a text here It says West Washington storm sewers
- 8:37Speaker 3: are backed up with rivers coming down the West Side
- 8:39Speaker 3: Hills streets.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm I'll say this.
- 8:42Speaker 5: I'm I'm very surprised that we do not have a
- 8:46Speaker 5: flash flood warning out right now.
- 8:47Speaker 2: I matterick I would have issued one, but you know, hey.
- 8:50Speaker 5: I'm I'm just private media which bride fact.
- 8:56Speaker 2: That is correct.
- 8:56Speaker 3: And I appreciate you coming in because it was like
- 8:58Speaker 3: I was texted with you earlier and then we had
- 9:01Speaker 3: some like I said, some scheduling. We had to it
- 9:03Speaker 3: right there. All right, go ahead.
- 9:05Speaker 5: Flash food morning just been issued for Kanawk County and
- 9:07Speaker 5: that goes until one fifteen this afternoon.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Uh yeah, that's again.
- 9:13Speaker 5: All the markers are there and the details let's see here,
- 9:17Speaker 5: they're coming up here.
- 9:19Speaker 1: This should be and.
- 9:20Speaker 3: I'm getting them right now. Yeah, on my on my phone.
- 9:22Speaker 3: For other areas, Wayne County, Yeah, it is a county.
- 9:25Speaker 5: Lawrence Boone, Lawrence Boone, Kanaw as well as Lincoln and
- 9:29Speaker 5: Wayne out Wayne because that I told you just where
- 9:31Speaker 5: that it was heavy all the way back out there
- 9:34Speaker 5: between one and one and a half. In one and
- 9:36Speaker 5: one and a half inches rain is falling. Additional amounts
- 9:38Speaker 5: of one inch are possible in this warned area. Flash
- 9:40Speaker 5: flood is ongoing or expected, and uh, you know this
- 9:43Speaker 5: is all And by the way, this is radar indicated.
- 9:46Speaker 5: I don't have to look outside and see what's what's
- 9:50Speaker 5: going on. We can literally see on the radar. Uh,
- 9:52Speaker 5: that's what because that's what I was looking at the radar.
- 9:55Speaker 5: As I said, the check marks are there just from
- 9:57Speaker 5: a scientific perspective that we should have flooding right now.
- 10:00Speaker 5: These occasions include Madison, Louisa, Wayne, Fort Kay, Ranger. In
- 10:05Speaker 5: mind you we're probably still probably out there at the
- 10:07Speaker 5: moment except for uh some streaming because of the the
- 10:12Speaker 5: EA S. But Ranger at Gill Harness, Spurlockville, Cauysville, Eastland Lake, Julian,
- 10:17Speaker 5: Allen Creek, Centerville, Danville, Branchlin, Mirra. I'll be interested to
- 10:22Speaker 5: see how the EA S sounds out most of these
- 10:24Speaker 5: towns because.
- 10:25Speaker 3: It's well, I mean, they struggle that speak I speak
- 10:30Speaker 3: about like it's a guy named Bill or something, right,
- 10:32Speaker 3: But I mean it's kind of like mill has.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Got a problem with KWA.
- 10:36Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly announce mine when I was Texans see Bishop
- 10:40Speaker 5: and came out Canal County.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Yeah, so yeah, but yeah, that's where we are.
- 10:43Speaker 3: All right. So Brian, we appreciate the updates. So what
- 10:45Speaker 3: i'd like to have you do? I know, I know
- 10:46Speaker 3: you've got other things to do, but if you're around,
- 10:49Speaker 3: if you could come back a little bit later on
- 10:50Speaker 3: in the show, because I've got some other guests. I
- 10:53Speaker 3: got to get to it. I'd like to try to
- 10:54Speaker 3: get an update with you. Let's say nine forty five
- 10:57Speaker 3: is nine.
- 10:59Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, because because we will have some we storm
- 11:02Speaker 5: reports that are coming in, so we know exactly kind
- 11:04Speaker 5: of thing.
- 11:04Speaker 3: We'll come back a little bit later on. And again
- 11:06Speaker 3: the Texter said that West Washington storm sewers are backing
- 11:09Speaker 3: up and they described it as rivers coming down west
- 11:12Speaker 3: Side Hills Street. So we always throw it out there
- 11:15Speaker 3: that if you've got some storm reports or some certain
- 11:17Speaker 3: things you want to tell us about, you can text
- 11:19Speaker 3: me via the Tony the Taylor text line at three
- 11:21Speaker 3: zero four nine three five five zero zero eight. We'll
- 11:24Speaker 3: check it right. Come back after this. I'm the Voice
- 11:26Speaker 3: of Charleston.
- 11:34Speaker 7: This is a flash flood warning for the following counties
- 11:37Speaker 7: in Western Virginia, Boone, Kama, Lincoln, and Wayne and Lawrence, Kentucky.
- 11:42Speaker 7: Issued at nine sixteen am Eastern daylight time. The National
- 11:47Speaker 7: Weather Service in Charleston has issued a flash flood warning
- 11:50Speaker 7: for northeastern Lawrence County in northeastern Kentucky, northwestern Boone County
- 11:54Speaker 7: in central West Virginia, West Central County in central West Virginia,
- 11:59Speaker 7: Lincoln County in central West Virginia, Central Wayne County in
- 12:02Speaker 7: western West Virginia until when fifteen pm Eastern daylight time.
- 12:07Speaker 7: At nine sixteen am eastern daylight time, Goppler radar indicated
- 12:10Speaker 7: thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the Warren area. Between one
- 12:15Speaker 7: and one point five inches of rain have fallen. Additional
- 12:18Speaker 7: rainfall amounts up to one inch are possible in the
- 12:21Speaker 7: Warren area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.
- 12:26Speaker 7: Hazard flash flooding caused by thunderstorms source radar indicated impact
- 12:33Speaker 7: flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets,

- 12:48Speaker 7: Gay Ranger, Jill Hearts, Spurlockville, Kyosville, Eastland, Lake, Julian, Altham Creek, Centreville, Danville, Branchland, Myira, Palermo,
- 12:58Speaker 7: Mud Eastland, and Griffithstille. This includes Ron one hundred nineteen
- 13:03Speaker 7: between mile markers fifty one and sixty six in between
- 13:06Speaker 7: mile markers sixty eight and sixty nine repeating. A flash
- 13:11Speaker 7: flood warning has been issued until one fifteen pm Eastern
- 13:14Speaker 7: daylight time for the following counties in Western Virginia Boone, Kina,
- 13:18Speaker 7: Lincoln and Wayne and Lawrence, Kentucky.
- 13:28Speaker 8: My parents you are, so it doesn't actually matter, all.
- 13:32Speaker 3: Right, Well, how about we go with it with miss Harriston.
- 13:34Speaker 3: How's that? Cays Sonya Harrison or soniadn't know which parody asked.
- 13:39Speaker 3: He's the chief executive officer of y w C Charleston.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Good morning, and welcome to the show.
- 13:44Speaker 8: Thank you. It's a pleasure to be here.
- 13:45Speaker 3: And I know he had a little struggle of getting
- 13:47Speaker 3: you here this morning because even as as the person
- 13:51Speaker 3: in charge of the y w C Charleston, you're not
- 13:53Speaker 3: impervious to the weather.
- 13:55Speaker 8: That is correct. I was not sure if I needed
- 13:57Speaker 8: to build an arc or what because I was definitely
- 14:01Speaker 8: floating around there.
- 14:02Speaker 3: We got you, We got you in here now. So
- 14:04Speaker 3: tell us about the why w WHYWC organization here in Charles,
- 14:09Speaker 3: because I feel sometimes, Sonya, that people they hear the
- 14:14Speaker 3: name YWCA or why w C Charleston, maybe they don't
- 14:18Speaker 3: realize all you do because it's a lot.
- 14:20Speaker 8: It'sation, and typically people will either think of Sojourners Shelter
- 14:26Speaker 8: or their think of result. But we have Sojourners Shelter
- 14:30Speaker 8: for Women and Families, which is a seventy five bed shelter.
- 14:34Speaker 8: It's for homeless women and family, so a man with
- 14:38Speaker 8: children can stay there as well. We have the domestic
- 14:42Speaker 8: Violent Shelter we have and our domestic violent Shelter is probably,
- 14:47Speaker 8: I believe, the only one in the state that also
- 14:49Speaker 8: has a pet shelter because oftentimes people won't leave and
- 14:54Speaker 8: leave their pets behind, so we have a pet shelter.
- 14:56Speaker 8: We have Melwolf is our child development center. We have Shankland,
- 15:01Speaker 8: which is permanent supportive housing for elderly women who have
- 15:06Speaker 8: suffered elder abuse or chronic homelessness, and that's permanent supportive housing.
- 15:13Speaker 8: We have Alicia McCormick Homes, which is transitional housing for
- 15:19Speaker 8: people who have been stalked, suffered dating violence, sexual assault,
- 15:24Speaker 8: human trafficking, all of that. We have the Past and
- 15:27Speaker 8: Present Thrift Store, which we've turned into a social enterprise
- 15:31Speaker 8: and with that we do the funds from that service
- 15:37Speaker 8: our different programs. It also we wardrobe people because when
- 15:42Speaker 8: you're leaving homelessness, you don't necessarily pack a bag and
- 15:46Speaker 8: so we will provide clothing for them through that. So
- 15:50Speaker 8: we do wardrobing. We also wardrobe our clients for job
- 15:54Speaker 8: interviews and what have you, and do retail training for
- 15:59Speaker 8: people who want to learn that. We have our workforce
- 16:03Speaker 8: development program, which we do at the Margaret Taylor Job
- 16:09Speaker 8: Readiness Program. We have a visitation in exchange facility where
- 16:14Speaker 8: court ordered visitation can take place and the perpetrator and
- 16:19Speaker 8: the victim do not have to be in the same space.
- 16:22Speaker 8: They're different doors and what have you. I'm trying to
- 16:25Speaker 8: think if I forgot I.
- 16:27Speaker 3: Mean, we're almost into like the third hour of the
- 16:29Speaker 3: show here, and it's only a one hour show. But
- 16:31Speaker 3: I one of the reason I wanted to bring that up.
- 16:33Speaker 3: And I'm sure there's some things that you left out,
- 16:35Speaker 3: but I want to bring it up so people realize
- 16:37Speaker 3: what an all encompassing organization this is and all the
- 16:40Speaker 3: things that you do that people may just may not
- 16:43Speaker 3: be aware of.
- 16:45Speaker 8: So basically, we service you from six weeks old and
- 16:50Speaker 8: we have programs that will help you all the way
- 16:54Speaker 8: through your senior years.
- 16:56Speaker 3: The Dave Island Show on five Vedie Line Browns You
- 16:58Speaker 3: Part by Mortgan to Morgan America's just Injury law firm.
- 17:01Speaker 3: If you're injured, visit forthpeople dot com. You got an
- 17:03Speaker 3: event coming up understand on the twenty second of this
- 17:06Speaker 3: month of motorcycle event.
- 17:07Speaker 8: Yes, we do that in concert with West Virginia American
- 17:12Speaker 8: Water and it's a bike ride for freedom, and so
- 17:17Speaker 8: different motorcycle clubs participate and they drive. I think they
- 17:24Speaker 8: go to Great River the New River Gorge, but I'm
- 17:28Speaker 8: not exactly sure.
- 17:29Speaker 3: Well, they're going now, we'll travel.
- 17:32Speaker 8: So if they're not going that far, it is a lovely.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Ride, sure, one of the most beautiful areas of the state.
- 17:37Speaker 8: So whatever wherever they're going, they start at our Catherine
- 17:41Speaker 8: Kitty Dooley Center with breakfast. All of the bikers get
- 17:44Speaker 8: there and they leave from there, and then they end
- 17:47Speaker 8: at the Shawnee part.
- 17:49Speaker 3: The Shawnee Sports Company. Yeah. Great. I remember last year
- 17:53Speaker 3: you challenge the community, the community and this was your
- 17:57Speaker 3: words to imagine a world without y W Charles. Yes,
- 18:00Speaker 3: talk about that and talk about what the challenge for
- 18:02Speaker 3: this year is.
- 18:03Speaker 8: Well, last year I wanted people to think about the
- 18:08Speaker 8: vastness of what we do, because, like I said earlier,
- 18:11Speaker 8: people often think about one thing that we do or
- 18:15Speaker 8: two things. They don't know the vastness and when you
- 18:18Speaker 8: imagine what Charleston would be without the Child Development Center,
- 18:22Speaker 8: without the shelters, without the rapid rehousing, without all the
- 18:26Speaker 8: things that we do, it would leave a gaping hole.
- 18:30Speaker 8: But this year I wanted to tell people I want
- 18:34Speaker 8: you to walk through the door with me. I want
- 18:37Speaker 8: you to experience the entire process of walking into one
- 18:42Speaker 8: of our shelters.
- 18:43Speaker 3: Okay, it's good stuff, good stuff. I've been doing little
- 18:47Speaker 3: research too for your visit now, and I heard the
- 18:49Speaker 3: term story behind the story. Yes, what's meant by that?
- 18:53Speaker 8: Because when we have funders and donors, they are all
- 19:00Speaker 8: the time want to fund the program. But the story
- 19:04Speaker 8: behind the story is while we are welcoming people as
- 19:10Speaker 8: they walk in and we provide care and resources and
- 19:15Speaker 8: all of that, the story behind the story are the
- 19:18Speaker 8: people providing the services, and we forget about them. And
- 19:22Speaker 8: so people want to fund the chair, but they don't
- 19:26Speaker 8: fund the person sitting in the chair actually providing the services.
- 19:32Speaker 8: And so in order for us to do what we
- 19:36Speaker 8: do in this community, we need people to think about
- 19:40Speaker 8: the story behind the story. So we can't service that
- 19:44Speaker 8: woman fleeing domestic violence without having someone sit in the
- 19:48Speaker 8: chair to provide those services.
- 19:51Speaker 3: Start again with Sonya or Sonya Harrison for the YWCA, Charleston.
- 19:55Speaker 3: I want to talk a little bit about your staff.
- 19:57Speaker 3: Give them a little love you.
- 19:59Speaker 8: I have the most incredible staff. They go above and beyond,
- 20:06Speaker 8: and I have staff members who have experienced our services before.
- 20:15Speaker 8: So we have the full spectrum. So we have a
- 20:18Speaker 8: three sixty. We have the person who was in shelter
- 20:21Speaker 8: as a child and now is running shelter. We have
- 20:25Speaker 8: the person who suffered domestic violence who's now a domestic
- 20:31Speaker 8: violence advocate. We have people who have firsthand experienced what
- 20:36Speaker 8: we do and believed in it so much and have
- 20:39Speaker 8: thrived in their lifetime, and so they come back to us.
- 20:43Speaker 8: The challenge I'm faced with is how we pay. And
- 20:49Speaker 8: it's not just the YWCA problem, but it's it's a
- 20:54Speaker 8: culture that service providers are grossly underpaid. When you look
- 21:00Speaker 8: at the statistics, a living wage in the state of
- 21:04Speaker 8: West Virginia is nineteen dollars and nine cents. The rate
- 21:11Speaker 8: that we're paying starts ten, twelve, thirteen dollars, and so
- 21:16Speaker 8: when we ask that person to come in and provide
- 21:20Speaker 8: trauma informed care. They're also sitting on the other side
- 21:24Speaker 8: wondering how am I going to pay my bills? And
- 21:28Speaker 8: so that's what keeps me up at night. How do
- 21:31Speaker 8: I provide a living wage for my staff? And how
- 21:37Speaker 8: do I articulate to the community that the services that
- 21:41Speaker 8: we are providing are vitally important, But don't forget the
- 21:46Speaker 8: person that's actually provided.
- 21:49Speaker 3: And sometimes I think we may we may lose sight
- 21:51Speaker 3: of that.
- 21:52Speaker 8: We absolutely do. We think about oh sojournals as doing
- 21:56Speaker 8: providing shelter, and that's great. We provide wonderful shelter and
- 22:02Speaker 8: what have you. But that's because we have wonderful people
- 22:06Speaker 8: providing those services.
- 22:08Speaker 3: And what do you need, Sonia from the public to
- 22:12Speaker 3: keep the WHYUCA of Charleston going strong? And what does
- 22:15Speaker 3: the future look like? What do you most need from
- 22:17Speaker 3: the public at this point, I.
- 22:19Speaker 8: Think it's multiple things from the public. We always need volunteers,
- 22:27Speaker 8: and I always encourage people who want to know more
- 22:32Speaker 8: come and take a tour of our programs because then
- 22:35Speaker 8: you're able to see firsthand what we do. So we
- 22:39Speaker 8: need volunteers, we need donors, we need advocates in the
- 22:44Speaker 8: community just telling our story and We of course need
- 22:48Speaker 8: people to convince the legislature to support the child development
- 22:55Speaker 8: center and childcare in this community and all the economic
- 22:58Speaker 8: development things that we're trying to assist with.
- 23:03Speaker 3: And there's so many ways that you can help out
- 23:06Speaker 3: with organizations like yours that don't always in the monetary
- 23:11Speaker 3: thing is very important, but sometimes people can give time.
- 23:13Speaker 3: And I like what you said too about about some
- 23:17Speaker 3: of the people that are providing these services have gone
- 23:19Speaker 3: through the services themselves, because so many times when you
- 23:22Speaker 3: have an issue, you're sitting there thinking, well, you know this,
- 23:25Speaker 3: this person doesn't know what I'm going. Yeah, they kind
- 23:27Speaker 3: of do because they've been where those people are. So
- 23:30Speaker 3: those people are very important as well. Absolutely, where can
- 23:33Speaker 3: people learn more about any of the services that the
- 23:36Speaker 3: YWCA Charleston has.
- 23:37Speaker 8: If they can go to our website y w Charleston
- 23:40Speaker 8: dot org and everything is right there on our website.
- 23:44Speaker 8: It describes each program in depth.

- 28:10Speaker 3: of Miss Capital City I understand, and she'd like to
- 28:13Speaker 3: be Miss West Virginia. She's Delaney Wells and she joins
- 28:16Speaker 3: us this morning in the Jered Construction Studios. Good morning,
- 28:19Speaker 3: welcome to the show.
- 28:20Speaker 13: Good morning, Thank you for having me. I'm excited this.
- 28:22Speaker 3: I've interviewed various pageant winners in the past. This maybe
- 28:25Speaker 3: the only time anybody has ever worn their crown in here,
- 28:29Speaker 3: although if we would, letting Brian Hughes would wear a crown.
- 28:31Speaker 3: I'm just saying, I'm just saying, well, tell us. Of course,
- 28:38Speaker 3: a lot of people are going to know you from
- 28:39Speaker 3: your work on WWKTV thirteen, but this is something that
- 28:43Speaker 3: you do separate from all that. So what was it
- 28:46Speaker 3: that made you want to do the whole pageant thing
- 28:47Speaker 3: to begin with?
- 28:48Speaker 14: Well, a few years ago I was the Queen of
- 28:50Speaker 14: the West Virginia Italian Heritage Festival and the girl who
- 28:53Speaker 14: was crowned before me competed in the Miss West Virginia organization,
- 28:57Speaker 14: so I thought if she could do what I could,
- 28:59Speaker 14: and I I love that we needed to have a
- 29:01Speaker 14: community service initiative, a platform that we worked on. And
- 29:04Speaker 14: then a lot of people don't know, but the Miss
- 29:06Speaker 14: America Opportunity, which is like the big organization that I
- 29:10Speaker 14: compete of, is one of the largest scholarship providers for
- 29:13Speaker 14: women across the United States. So I graduated last year
- 29:16Speaker 14: with my bachelors in journalism, but I want to get
- 29:19Speaker 14: my master's in marketing at WVU and the Miss West
- 29:21Speaker 14: Virginia and Miss America organization can.
- 29:24Speaker 13: Help with that.
- 29:25Speaker 14: And I love with my job being out and about
- 29:27Speaker 14: in the community. So I always kind of say that,
- 29:29Speaker 14: you know, being Miss Capital City and competing for Miss
- 29:31Speaker 14: West Virginia is a second full time job, and I
- 29:34Speaker 14: just love serving the community. I love being out and
- 29:36Speaker 14: about with my job with this, And yeah, I started
- 29:40Speaker 14: pageantry last year, but it's something that I've really really enjoyed.
- 29:42Speaker 3: So you didn't do it at a younger age because
- 29:44Speaker 3: most people, I'm not saying you're over the hill or
- 29:46Speaker 3: anything like that. I'm just saying that most a lot
- 29:48Speaker 3: of the people that are in the pageant scene, they
- 29:49Speaker 3: start when they're very, very young, but you wanted it
- 29:51Speaker 3: till later.
- 29:52Speaker 8: I did.
- 29:52Speaker 14: Yeah, I grew up doing dance and theater, which so
- 29:55Speaker 14: I've always been performing and then again being out and about.
- 29:59Speaker 14: But something else that really drove me to this was
- 30:01Speaker 14: our community service initiative. When I was one week old,
- 30:04Speaker 14: I had open heart surgery because I was born with
- 30:07Speaker 14: the heart defect called transposition of the great vessels, and
- 30:11Speaker 14: so during my surgery, they the two arteries leaving the
- 30:14Speaker 14: heart were flipped, and so I had have surgery to
- 30:16Speaker 14: flip them back into place. So I have a pretty
- 30:18Speaker 14: large scar down my chest. And growing up doing dance
- 30:21Speaker 14: and theater, I always got nervous about our costumes that
- 30:24Speaker 14: we would need for our recitals and performances because I
- 30:26Speaker 14: never wanted them to show my scar because as a
- 30:29Speaker 14: ten year old little girl, how do you explain what
- 30:31Speaker 14: happened to you? So always felt kind of alone in that.
- 30:34Speaker 14: And so my community service initiative is called Scarred but Stronger,
- 30:37Speaker 14: and through social media and going into classrooms and being
- 30:42Speaker 14: out in the community, I educate people on leading heart
- 30:45Speaker 14: healthy lives and preventing heart disease. But I also talked
- 30:47Speaker 14: to other heart survivors to know that we're not alone
- 30:49Speaker 14: because I was born with a congenital heart defect, and
- 30:52Speaker 14: one in one hundred babies or born with a heart
- 30:55Speaker 14: with a congenital heart defect, and it's the most common
- 30:57Speaker 14: birth defect. Yet I still felt so alone. So I
- 31:00Speaker 14: know that if I fought alone, other people did too.
- 31:02Speaker 14: So I also been using my community service initiative to
- 31:05Speaker 14: connect with other heart survivors.
- 31:06Speaker 3: And when you connect with these other heart survivors, and
- 31:09Speaker 3: you know, we're talking with the Landey Wells, what do
- 31:10Speaker 3: you tell them first?
- 31:11Speaker 13: I just listened to their story. I was at the
- 31:13Speaker 13: Morgantown Heart.
- 31:14Speaker 14: Walk last weekend and they have a survivor's central tent
- 31:18Speaker 14: and the man who was running the tent had open
- 31:21Speaker 14: heart surgery four years ago, and I told him I
- 31:24Speaker 14: had it twenty four years ago. So I understand, and
- 31:28Speaker 14: we just connect. It's like it's kind of you just
- 31:31Speaker 14: look at each other.
- 31:32Speaker 13: No one really knows open heart surgery until you've been
- 31:35Speaker 13: through it.
- 31:36Speaker 14: Of course, you know, I was a baby, so I
- 31:37Speaker 14: don't remember, but I still know that feeling of being
- 31:39Speaker 14: alone and being scared. Through my cardiology appointments that I
- 31:43Speaker 14: go to every year. So when I connect with other
- 31:45Speaker 14: heart survivors, I just tell them one, you're allowed to
- 31:48Speaker 14: feel that fear, of course.
- 31:50Speaker 13: But then also just connecting and be like, how strong
- 31:52Speaker 13: are we?
- 31:52Speaker 14: How incredible is this that we survived this, and that
- 31:55Speaker 14: we're still here today. And so I really like to
- 31:57Speaker 14: get giddy with other people who have survived something, you know, crazy.
- 32:02Speaker 3: There's a lot of similarities, I would think, Delaney, with
- 32:05Speaker 3: people that have gone through a lot of other traumatic things.
- 32:08Speaker 3: Even though you said you were baby and you don't
- 32:09Speaker 3: remember this, but you still have had to have this
- 32:12Speaker 3: in the in the background of your life, and as
- 32:14Speaker 3: you said, you still have to go for I disappointments
- 32:16Speaker 3: and things of that nature. But I mean, you could
- 32:18Speaker 3: take that particular thing that happened to you and you
- 32:23Speaker 3: could transpose it on any other number of things about
- 32:26Speaker 3: being a survivor, and that's what it's about about being
- 32:28Speaker 3: a survivor.
- 32:29Speaker 14: Definitely, every time I get nervous, you know, whether it's
- 32:32Speaker 14: prepping for Miss West Virginia, I'm there this time next week,
- 32:35Speaker 14: or it's going live on air, I think, you know,
- 32:36Speaker 14: if my one week old self can survive open heart surgery,
- 32:40Speaker 14: you know I can.
- 32:40Speaker 13: Go live on air or I can compete at Miss
- 32:42Speaker 13: West Virginia.
- 32:43Speaker 14: I as nervous as I get, I always try to
- 32:45Speaker 14: remember that and that my mom, when I was a
- 32:48Speaker 14: baby shuit heard that redheads have a higher pain tolerance,
- 32:51Speaker 14: and I think that that's pretty true. I feel like
- 32:53Speaker 14: I don't feel a lot of pain or you know,
- 32:56Speaker 14: scarred but stronger.
- 32:57Speaker 13: That's what I am. I feel like I'm a very
- 32:59Speaker 13: tough person.
- 33:00Speaker 14: And having experienced open heart surgery at one week old
- 33:03Speaker 14: and through my cardiology appointments, ever since I turned eighteen,
- 33:06Speaker 14: I've been having to get an MRI, and the first
- 33:08Speaker 14: one that I ever had, they told my mom that
- 33:10Speaker 14: it would be forty five minutes to an hour. I
- 33:12Speaker 14: was in there for three hours and fifteen minutes and
- 33:15Speaker 14: I couldn't go to sleep. I had breathing exercises, and
- 33:18Speaker 14: to be honest, I squeezed that little ball to mean that,
- 33:21Speaker 14: like I want to stop for a second, you know,
- 33:23Speaker 14: take a breather, and then come back in. And so
- 33:25Speaker 14: my mom calls that my superpower, being able to be
- 33:27Speaker 14: in an MRI for three hours.
- 33:29Speaker 3: I've had MRIs and I'm not particularly claustrophobic or anything
- 33:33Speaker 3: like that, but I will say that three hours in an.
- 33:36Speaker 13: MRI it's not fun.
- 33:37Speaker 3: No, I mean, I mean, what do you think about
- 33:39Speaker 3: the whole time you just can't go to sleep? I mean,
- 33:41Speaker 3: what you think about everything that's ever happened in your
- 33:43Speaker 3: life at that point, because you've got all kinds of
- 33:44Speaker 3: time on your hands.
- 33:45Speaker 14: Oh, you definitely have a lot of time. That's all
- 33:47Speaker 14: I think about.
- 33:48Speaker 13: I still go to the pediatric cardiology up.
- 33:52Speaker 14: At WV Medicine, So they have little stickers on the top,
- 33:55Speaker 14: and I know that they're to calm kids down, but they.
- 33:57Speaker 13: Calmed my adults helf down too. And music, you're that.
- 34:00Speaker 3: Banging, So I gotcha talk to Landy Wells, Dave aland
- 34:03Speaker 3: Show and five. Vindy Line brought to you in part

- 34:19Speaker 3: know can hurts you. So now you're on to miss
- 34:21Speaker 3: West Virginia. Where is the pageant?
- 34:23Speaker 14: It's going to be held in Martinsburg at the Airborne
- 34:25Speaker 14: Event Center. We move in on Monday and finals is
- 34:29Speaker 14: June twentieth, West Virginia Day.
- 34:31Speaker 3: So okay, perfect, all right? So what all goes into
- 34:33Speaker 3: being Miss West Virginia. What all the type things they
- 34:35Speaker 3: have you do? Because I know from for knowing people
- 34:38Speaker 3: that have competed in things like this, it's not just
- 34:40Speaker 3: about the pageant, it's a whole week's worth of things
- 34:42Speaker 3: that lead up to it. You're doing things in the community.
- 34:45Speaker 3: What all have they have you guys doing?
- 34:46Speaker 2: So what I've been.
- 34:47Speaker 14: Doing is Miss Capital City is going into classrooms, using
- 34:50Speaker 14: my social media, speaking at events out in the community
- 34:54Speaker 14: about heart disease. It's the number one killer of people everywhere.
- 34:57Speaker 14: We always say, you know, heart disease is the number
- 34:59Speaker 14: one killer of women, but it's the number one killer
- 35:01Speaker 14: of people period globally, and so just raising awareness. What
- 35:04Speaker 14: I do specifically is raising awareness about how to prevent
- 35:07Speaker 14: heart disease, you know, eating healthy, getting enough sleep, quitting tobacco.
- 35:11Speaker 14: But then to go into Miss West Virginia Week, we
- 35:13Speaker 14: move in on Monday and we have rehearsals for the
- 35:16Speaker 14: performance and then actually this time next week, we have
- 35:20Speaker 14: a private interview with the judges for ten minutes.
- 35:22Speaker 13: Where we just share our story.
- 35:23Speaker 14: So I'll share about being a heart survivor the work
- 35:26Speaker 14: that I've done in my community. And then we have
- 35:28Speaker 14: our preliminary competitions on Thursday and Friday with you know, evening,
- 35:34Speaker 14: gown Fitness, all those classic and fun pageants. And then yeah,
- 35:38Speaker 14: on Saturday is Finals West Virginia Day. But yeah, the
- 35:41Speaker 14: work that goes into Miss West Virginia is sharing our
- 35:44Speaker 14: community service initiative across the entire state. When I was
- 35:47Speaker 14: one week, when I was having my surgery in the hospital,
- 35:50Speaker 14: my mom's friend gifted me a lion stuffed animal and
- 35:53Speaker 14: it was as simple to give me courage.
- 35:55Speaker 13: To go through my appointments.
- 35:56Speaker 14: And so what I've done is I've gifted lion stuffed
- 35:59Speaker 14: animals to cardiac cardiology patients across West Virginia. So I've
- 36:03Speaker 14: gone to every single Shrondon's Hospital in West Virginia and
- 36:05Speaker 14: dropped off my lines to their cardioc their pediatric cardiology unit,
- 36:09Speaker 14: and I've had nurses messaged me back with pictures of
- 36:13Speaker 14: you know, the lions being given to patients. So that's
- 36:16Speaker 14: really awesome to know that children across this state are
- 36:19Speaker 14: getting that symbol of strength.
- 36:20Speaker 3: Like I did I need to interrupt you just one
- 36:23Speaker 3: moment because we just got a text your weather related
- 36:25Speaker 3: So being a newsperson, you can understand very break can
- 36:28Speaker 3: you can do like a breaking new sound or something
- 36:30Speaker 3: like that. Hearing Reports says, the texture of a mud
- 36:33Speaker 3: slide on sixty four East right before the oak Wood
- 36:35Speaker 3: Road Act of Traffic is banking up to the Montrose accit.
- 36:38Speaker 3: According to a Texters, so you told me earlier you
- 36:41Speaker 3: didn't have to be at the TV station until later,
- 36:43Speaker 3: so you may get called in.
- 36:44Speaker 14: Early about to say I think I should just found
- 36:45Speaker 14: out my assignment for the day.
- 36:46Speaker 3: I guess, I guess breaking news. You'll be the only
- 36:49Speaker 3: one with a crown. So yeah, so there is that.
- 36:53Speaker 3: So is there a place where people can watch, like
- 36:56Speaker 3: online they could watch the pageant or something like that.
- 36:58Speaker 3: Is that available online or yes?
- 36:59Speaker 14: It'll be streamed on the Miss West Virginia organization Facebook both.
- 37:04Speaker 14: That's the preliminary Thursday and Friday and then finals on
- 37:06Speaker 14: Saturday will also be streamed.
- 37:08Speaker 3: And how many people compete? How many women?
- 37:10Speaker 14: So there's twenty four in the Miss division and then
- 37:13Speaker 14: oh gosh, I'm not sure exactly, maybe eighteen to twenty
- 37:16Speaker 14: in the teen division for Miss West Virginia and then
- 37:18Speaker 14: they'll crown Miss West Virginia's.
- 37:19Speaker 3: Team and you're missed Capital City. So how long is
- 37:22Speaker 3: that that? How long is your reign so to speak?
- 37:25Speaker 3: And that when were you when? When were you putting
- 37:26Speaker 3: into that?
- 37:27Speaker 14: I won my title on February twenty eighth, Okay, so
- 37:31Speaker 14: if I were not to be crowned Miss West Virginia
- 37:33Speaker 14: next Saturday, I would be Miss Capital City until February.
- 37:38Speaker 14: But then if I were to win Miss West Virginia,
- 37:39Speaker 14: then my reign would stops Miss Capital City.
- 37:41Speaker 13: But then you can miss.
- 37:42Speaker 3: You've got to relinquish the title, as they say in
- 37:44Speaker 3: the sports world at that point if you went, well,
- 37:46Speaker 3: we hope you Oh.
- 37:46Speaker 13: Yeah, I don't know any sports terms.
- 37:47Speaker 3: Sorry, okay, I got you do. We are there other
- 37:51Speaker 3: people from from the area that are competing that you know?
- 37:53Speaker 13: Yes, August Ball is from Boomer, West Virginia.
- 37:56Speaker 14: She is currently Miss Tristate Area and then Riley Jennings
- 37:59Speaker 14: is Cannaw Valley. So all three of us have been
- 38:02Speaker 14: going around out and about with you know, in the
- 38:05Speaker 14: Knaw Valley in the capital city. Our director of our
- 38:09Speaker 14: local pageant.
- 38:09Speaker 13: Her name is Jennifer Ruther. She was Miss West Virginia
- 38:12Speaker 13: last year.
- 38:12Speaker 14: So she's been so helpful because and she lives here
- 38:14Speaker 14: in Charleston, so she knows the role. She's been preparing
- 38:17Speaker 14: us so well. I cannot be more grateful for the
- 38:19Speaker 14: support that we've had. And we're all just really excited
- 38:22Speaker 14: to head up to Martinsburg.
- 38:23Speaker 3: Well, we wish for the best of luck. So it's

- 42:03Speaker 3: I mentioned earlier that we had a text that somebody
- 42:06Speaker 3: said the reports of a mudslide on sixty four East
- 42:09Speaker 3: right before Oakwood Road.
- 42:10Speaker 2: Excit, that's normal.
- 42:12Speaker 5: That's actually become a normal thing anytime we get very
- 42:15Speaker 5: heavy rainfall there.
- 42:16Speaker 3: And another text says you can see traffic back up
- 42:20Speaker 3: on the Western Indio five to one one camera at
- 42:22Speaker 3: mile marker fifty six y four.
- 42:24Speaker 5: Yeah, you can't see that matter back. I was just
- 42:26Speaker 5: looking at that camera this morning. The flash foot morning
- 42:29Speaker 5: continues at this hour for those locations that include parts
- 42:34Speaker 5: of Kanall County as well as Lincoln in Lincoln and
- 42:40Speaker 5: parts of western Moon also into Wayne County, and that
- 42:44Speaker 5: also includes Horns County there in Kentucky. Of course, I
- 42:47Speaker 5: told you you know, Council of Briton Burton was is
- 42:50Speaker 5: in Huntington right now and they're looking at the sky
- 42:52Speaker 5: scoring out and they're in pretty good shape for being
- 42:55Speaker 5: able to play the game that it was GW and
- 42:57Speaker 5: Hurricane Ye.
- 42:58Speaker 3: No, no, it's not well complaints I got, I've got
- 43:03Speaker 3: it in my notes here. GW is definitely the game.
- 43:05Speaker 3: We'll just have to see exactly. Yeah it is.
- 43:08Speaker 5: It is GW. They play Huntington. I'm sorry, yep, that's
- 43:13Speaker 5: at today and that's the first game. Yeah, yeah, they
- 43:15Speaker 5: should be sorrying that game on time.
- 43:17Speaker 3: Hurricane is gonna take on Martinsburg later this afternoon, and
- 43:20Speaker 3: you can hear that game, by the way on w
- 43:23Speaker 3: CCHS and I think the other area games are on
- 43:25Speaker 3: Charleston's USPIAN radio one of six point seven FM and
- 43:27Speaker 3: fourteen ninety AF And of course you can always go
- 43:30Speaker 3: to the Metro News website and follow along there. So
- 43:32Speaker 3: you're saying huntings and look, it's okay, but let's get
- 43:35Speaker 3: away from baseball for a moment. Let's talk about what's
- 43:37Speaker 3: going on around here in the Kanaal Valley.
- 43:39Speaker 5: Well, what we're looking at more than anything is that
- 43:42Speaker 5: things are starting to calm down. We have like to
- 43:44Speaker 5: moderate rain showers across parts of the Charleston area. You
- 43:48Speaker 5: go into eastern Kanaal County, that's where we do have
- 43:50Speaker 5: some of the heaviest rain. And right now you're gonna
- 43:53Speaker 5: see it. You're gonna actually deal with that in Canall
- 43:56Speaker 5: City Maulden area right now, that's where some of the
- 43:58Speaker 5: heaviest rain is back over to cold. And then when
- 44:01Speaker 5: you get northeast bank back out there to to sections
- 44:05Speaker 5: of the spots where you get in like at a
- 44:08Speaker 5: nausea things that nature. Uh, that's where you get around which,
- 44:10Speaker 5: by the way, some people are amazed that I can
- 44:12Speaker 5: say that name because most people.
- 44:14Speaker 2: Around there don't say it. But you can't say it
- 44:16Speaker 2: again at a naisa.
- 44:18Speaker 3: But I lost that be.
- 44:21Speaker 2: How much were we betting there? But one thing that uh,
- 44:25Speaker 2: that is for sure.
- 44:26Speaker 5: This heavy rainfall is setting us up for more problems
- 44:30Speaker 5: probably on Friday. And when I say more problems, we'll
- 44:33Speaker 5: just wear water logged. Think about this. We went from
- 44:36Speaker 5: a full tilt drought to being water logged. So and
- 44:41Speaker 5: that and that means that means taking the water table
- 44:43Speaker 5: and significantly moistening that up.
- 44:46Speaker 2: I know a lot of people don't like that word.
- 44:48Speaker 3: And and it's like a sauna out there or as
- 44:52Speaker 3: as my my relatives in uh in Logan County, Wyoming,
- 44:55Speaker 3: camisay it. My grandmother used to say it's a sany
- 44:58Speaker 3: out there. And I was like twelve years before I
- 45:00Speaker 3: realized that she was saying, son, yeah, yeah, yes, that
- 45:03Speaker 3: is correct, but yes, sorry, might entertained you were storious
- 45:11Speaker 3: of my childhood.
- 45:11Speaker 5: It just it just took a moment for me to
- 45:13Speaker 5: go that's okay. Yeah, that that actually is funny.
- 45:16Speaker 3: So sometimes it takes a little while.
- 45:20Speaker 5: Yeah, it took a bit offord to register truly, but
- 45:23Speaker 5: now I so. So we have all this rain today
- 45:26Speaker 5: this morning, and then as begin this afternoon, we you
- 45:29Speaker 5: know that drying trend that's in Huntington, you know, mind
- 45:31Speaker 5: you there are a couple of showers of south and
- 45:33Speaker 5: also east of Huntington right now that have been that
- 45:35Speaker 5: have developed on the back side of the system. That's
- 45:39Speaker 5: that's okay, that's that's normal what we see with something
- 45:41Speaker 5: like this. But we're gonna be able to dry out
- 45:44Speaker 5: as we go into this afternoon, and then as we
- 45:46Speaker 5: work our way into deep into the after and late
- 45:49Speaker 5: afternoon evening, there's a chance that we peek out with
- 45:51Speaker 5: heat and there might be a strength and a shower
- 45:55Speaker 5: late afternoon going into evening hours of those die off.
- 45:58Speaker 5: I think tomorrow we shape up with a couple maybe
- 46:00Speaker 5: a couple of showers in the morning because there is
- 46:03Speaker 5: a time period. It's it's very weird where you can
- 46:06Speaker 5: have at sunrise a couple of showers that do develop.
- 46:10Speaker 2: There's just a little bit of insibility there.
- 46:11Speaker 5: Normally that's the most stable part of the day, from
- 46:15Speaker 5: roughly seven am to about nine am in the morning,
- 46:18Speaker 5: most stable part of the day.
- 46:19Speaker 2: But there's just enough.
- 46:20Speaker 5: What happens is you get that sun, even though we
- 46:23Speaker 5: might not see the sun in the morning, that sun
- 46:25Speaker 5: starts to mix the atmosphere just to touch and you
- 46:27Speaker 5: can get things just rise. That starting to lift and
- 46:31Speaker 5: at buoyancy is there in the atmosphere. It allows all
- 46:34Speaker 5: of a sudden old showers thundershower to developed briefly in
- 46:36Speaker 5: the morning in the tropical, tropical like atmosphere. Now as
- 46:40Speaker 5: we go into Friday, though, all that's are off, we've
- 46:43Speaker 5: got a cold front.
- 46:44Speaker 2: That cold front.
- 46:45Speaker 5: The timing is interesting now because as I was going
- 46:48Speaker 5: to get more forecast models went upstairs to start to
- 46:49Speaker 5: look at and research a few things. The timing has
- 46:52Speaker 5: actually moved up and it gets us more to the
- 46:55Speaker 5: middle of the day. But we're still, you know, we're
- 46:58Speaker 5: still a couple of days away from that. Yeah a
- 47:00Speaker 5: lot could change.
- 47:01Speaker 2: You, Yeah, a lot change.
- 47:02Speaker 5: But if it moves up on the timing, hey, you know,
- 47:05Speaker 5: it helps out the live of the Levey situation. But
- 47:07Speaker 5: at the same time, to it doesn't because setup is
- 47:09Speaker 5: also important. Yeah, at least be it if you can
- 47:12Speaker 5: get it set up.
- 47:13Speaker 3: And then we always say it in a promotions business,
- 47:15Speaker 3: the concert's the easy part, right exactly, that's the easy stuff.
- 47:19Speaker 3: It's everything leading up to it and so and sometimes
- 47:21Speaker 3: it happens usually several hours before and cry checks and
- 47:25Speaker 3: things of that nature.
- 47:26Speaker 5: So you know, I saw one fellow one time he goes,
- 47:29Speaker 5: I can't, I can't do concerts like this. It's it's
- 47:32Speaker 5: all wet, and I'm like, yay, you can't. I you
- 47:34Speaker 5: just gotta drive some things off and plug it in.
- 47:36Speaker 2: Come on, buddy, let's go.
- 47:38Speaker 3: Well we'll see because I know it's a major I mean,
- 47:40Speaker 3: all the acts are graded live on the levee, but
- 47:42Speaker 3: this is a big one. Spend doctors, I mean, you know,
- 47:44Speaker 3: just just a fantastic band, uh and big time band
- 47:48Speaker 3: and they're coming to Charleston, so hopefully fingers crossed.
- 47:52Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, I like to think that they're at
- 47:54Speaker 5: least prepping for a Civic Center event because auditory anymore,
- 48:01Speaker 5: which that needs to come down.
- 48:03Speaker 2: But that's first off, you know me, and it probably
- 48:05Speaker 2: will come down.
- 48:06Speaker 3: So well, uh, well we'll be we'll be talking to
- 48:09Speaker 3: you a lot between now and then. But the bottom
- 48:11Speaker 3: line is things are gonna calm down.
- 48:12Speaker 5: Yeah, these are gonna came down hours. Tomorrow's just gonna
- 48:14Speaker 5: be hot, steamy. Uh maybe that little shower in the morning,
- 48:17Speaker 5: and then Friday a severe weather possible. But uh, listen,
- 48:20Speaker 5: this is is what we plan, what we have to
- 48:22Speaker 5: plan for outdoor events. I think we've got a little
- 48:24Speaker 5: party about the quarter. Many of my coursest friends to
- 48:27Speaker 5: this party.
- 48:28Speaker 3: Yes that's your look, that's your little boat show.
- 48:29Speaker 1: But you do.
- 48:30Speaker 5: Yeah, a little book show we do on Uh, fortunately weekend.
- 48:33Speaker 5: It's small little again, small little.
- 48:34Speaker 3: I don't have more than that coming up a little
- 48:35Speaker 3: bit late, but I but I do want to say this.
- 48:37Speaker 3: I would be remiss Brian and you and I don't
- 48:39Speaker 3: We're not serious very often, even when we are serious,
- 48:41Speaker 3: we're not serious. But this time I am serious. I
- 48:44Speaker 3: did not realize until earlier today that today is the
- 48:47Speaker 3: one year anniversary of the death of Doug scaff I
- 48:50Speaker 3: did not realize that. And uh, I will say, you know,
- 48:54Speaker 3: Doug and I were were great friends.
- 48:57Speaker 10: Uh.
- 48:57Speaker 3: The last I went back this morning. Look my last
- 49:00Speaker 3: text from him, which was a couple of days before
- 49:03Speaker 3: he passed, and he said he was reaching out to
- 49:08Speaker 3: me to try to work out something to get Landau
- 49:10Speaker 3: to be able to play over at PHASEOS. And I
- 49:13Speaker 3: was kind of the go between with my friendship with Landau,
- 49:16Speaker 3: with me and me and big brother Burke, you know,
- 49:18Speaker 3: trying to get that worked out, and unfortunately it didn't happen.
- 49:21Speaker 3: And I will say that if you get a chance
- 49:23Speaker 3: to read either online or the hard copy, which is
- 49:27Speaker 3: kind of hard to do these days with because that mail,
- 49:28Speaker 3: God bless those folks they're trying. Doug Reynolds wrote a
- 49:33Speaker 3: really really good piece about Doug's CAAF. It's in a
- 49:36Speaker 3: paper day and what a great guy. And I still
- 49:38Speaker 3: remember the day after, you know, when we learned of
- 49:41Speaker 3: the news, and that night I'm putting trying to put
- 49:44Speaker 3: together a show, canceling all the guests, and look we're
- 49:46Speaker 3: gonna and I got may Or a good one in here.
- 49:48Speaker 3: I got Jimmy Strawn in here. I had Mike Pushkin,
- 49:51Speaker 3: all these Republicans, Democrats, liberals, conservatives, everybody, everybody wanted to
- 49:58Speaker 3: come on and just talk about Doug scaff He was.
- 50:01Speaker 2: He was a great guy. I mean I got to
- 50:03Speaker 2: work with him.
- 50:04Speaker 5: A number of times too, in the guys night out
- 50:07Speaker 5: stuff and just all sorts of different things. And the
- 50:09Speaker 5: great part about it was he walked into a room
- 50:12Speaker 5: and that smiled, of his million dollars smile.
- 50:15Speaker 3: Even when he was upset, he wasn't really upset. Right,
- 50:18Speaker 3: he was running for Secretary of State. I remember that,
- 50:20Speaker 3: and there he was a campaign and there were some
- 50:22Speaker 3: things that came out, I mean, nothing major, but just
- 50:24Speaker 3: things that coming in the new base. And he knows
- 50:26Speaker 3: because he's running for the alls before and I mean
- 50:28Speaker 3: literally he came in to do an interview with me
- 50:30Speaker 3: and he's smiling and cussing at the same time off
- 50:32Speaker 3: the air and he said, man, can you believe this
- 50:34Speaker 3: in the end and whatever, but certainly he will be missed.
- 50:37Speaker 3: All right, we want to get about a minute or so,
- 50:39Speaker 3: how are preps going for the regatta?
- 50:41Speaker 2: There? They're going.
- 50:42Speaker 5: Really, we're down to assets and collecting checks, so assets
- 50:47Speaker 5: for all our media assets, collecting checks.
- 50:49Speaker 2: We've been in.
- 50:50Speaker 5: Constant communication with our UH, with our partners everywhere city Center,
- 50:55Speaker 5: h you know, because they helped our do do all
- 50:57Speaker 5: of our bookings and stage and set up and we
- 51:00Speaker 5: do them some last minute measurements. But right now it's
- 51:03Speaker 5: looking pretty good. And uh and we're excited about it.
- 51:06Speaker 5: By the way, up for the bicycle race up because
- 51:09Speaker 5: we're gonna we've got tons of bicycles to give out
- 51:11Speaker 5: to kids and we do that along with the Rotary
- 51:13Speaker 5: Club to help donate bicycles to kids all across the
- 51:18Speaker 5: Charleston area.
- 51:19Speaker 3: It's going to be here before you know it, man,
- 51:21Speaker 3: I mean, it's just a couple of weeks away.
- 51:22Speaker 9: And all now.
- 51:23Speaker 5: I've been working on my boat constantly and it is exhausting.
- 51:26Speaker 5: But guess what, it's gonna be nice and pretty. Everybody's
- 51:28Speaker 5: trying to get everything glossed up for this, for this
- 51:30Speaker 5: for sure. So one hundred year anniversary birthdays both the
- 51:35Speaker 5: mister Wing and the roof of B two s turble boats.
- 51:37Speaker 3: All right, and we'll be talking to you a lot
- 51:39Speaker 3: during them, maybe the last a couple of days with
- 51:41Speaker 3: this weather situation. Meteorologists Brian Hughes follow him on Facebook,
- 51:45Speaker 3: follow him on the Metro News television appen his team
- 51:47Speaker 3: of meteorologists. All right, download the app.
- 51:50Speaker 1: Team got to go.
