- 0:31to the scriptures to learn more about God and to strengthen your daily walk with Jesus Christ.
- 1:03Have you ever wondered what it looks like for life to finish well?
- 1:07Deuteronomy chapter 34 gives us one of the most beautiful conclusions to a story in all of Scripture.
- 1:14Moses, the servant of the Lord, reaches the end of his journey,
- 1:18and God himself brings him to the top of Mount Nebo to see the promised land that lay before Israel.
- 1:26Moses had led faithfully, prayed boldly, interceded passionately,
- 1:31and walked closely with God.
- 1:33And at the end of his life, God honored him in a way that belongs only to those who know him deeply.
- 1:40This chapter reminds us that the true measure of a life is not what we accomplish,
- 1:46but how well we walk with God.
- 1:48It shows us the compassion of a God who stays with his people to the very end
- 1:52and the faithfulness of a servant who finished the work God gave him.
- 1:56Join us in this episode of the Woman at the Well Ministries podcast as we explore
- 2:01the life, legacy, and final moments of Moses and focus on Deuteronomy 34.10, which says,
- 2:09There arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face.
- 2:15Let's discover together what it means to finish well, to walk closely with God,
- 2:21and to trust Him in every season of life.
- 2:25Join with us as we read the final chapter in the book of Deuteronomy,
- 2:30Deuteronomy chapter 34.
- 2:33And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto the mountain of Nebo.
- 2:38To the top of Pisgah that is over against Jericho.
- 2:42And the Lord showed him all the land of Gilead unto Dan,
- 2:47and unto Naphtali, and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh and the land of Judah
- 2:52unto the utmost sea, and the south and the plain of the valley of Jericho,
- 2:58the city of palm trees, unto Zor.
- 3:00And the Lord said unto him, This is the land, which I swear unto Abraham,
- 3:06unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, saying, I will give it to thy seed.
- 3:10I have caused thee to see it with thine eyes, but thou shalt not go over thither.
- 3:16So Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab,
- 3:21according to the word of the Lord.
- 3:22And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Beth Peor.
- 3:28But no man knoweth his sepulcher unto this day.
- 3:31And Moses was 120 years old when he died.
- 3:36His eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated.
- 3:41And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days.
- 3:46So the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended.
- 3:50And Joshua, the son of Nun, was full of the spirit of wisdom.
- 3:54For Moses had laid his hands upon him, and the children of Israel hearkened
- 3:59unto him, as did the Lord commanded Moses.
- 4:03And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses,
- 4:07whom the Lord knew face to face.
- 4:09In all the signs and the wonders which the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh,
- 4:15and to all his servants, and to all his land, and in all that mighty hand,
- 4:20and in all the great terror which Moses showed in the sight of all Israel.
- 4:26Deuteronomy chapter 34 is one
- 4:28of the most tender, solemn, and beautiful chapters in all of Scripture.
- 4:33It brings the book of Deuteronomy to a close, and it also brings Moses' earthly
- 4:38life and ministry to its completion.
- 4:41After journeying through 40 years of wilderness wanderings, 40 years of leading
- 4:46a difficult people, and 40 years of faithfully serving the Lord,
- 4:51Moses arrives at the end of his appointed work.
- 4:55Verses 1-4 open with the Lord bringing Moses to the top of Mount Neba,
- 4:59to Pisgah, a mountain that overlooks the promised land.
- 5:03From this mountain, God himself shows Moses every part of the land,
- 5:07the land promised long ago to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
- 5:11This land stretched from Gilead in the north through the land of Ephraim,
- 5:16Judah, and the plains of Jericho, all the way to Zor.
- 5:20Moses was not going to enter the promised land, but God graciously let him see it with his eyes.
- 5:27In verse 4, God reaffirms that he was keeping his covenant.
- 5:31He would give this land to Moses' descendants, even though Moses would not go over the Jordan.
- 5:37Verse 5 describes the death of Moses in language that communicates honor and intimacy.
- 5:44So Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab,
- 5:49according to the word of the Lord.
- 5:52Moses did not die by accident, by illness, or by human hand.
- 5:56He died at the command of God, in the timing of God, and in the presence of
- 6:01God. And verse 6 tells us something amazing.
- 6:04The Lord buried Moses.
- 6:07No other person in Scripture is said to have been buried by God himself.
- 6:12Moses' grave was intentionally hidden. God likely did this to protect the Israelites
- 6:18from turning it into some sort of shrine or falling into idolatry.
- 6:23Verse 7 notes Moses' strength at the time of his death.
- 6:27He was 120 years old, yet his eyesight had not dimmed and his natural force had not abated.
- 6:33Moses did not die weak or frail. His death was not due to the weakness of age,
- 6:40but due to the completion of God's purpose for him.
- 6:43In verse 8, we see the deep grief of the Israelites. They mourned Moses for
- 6:4730 days, the traditional period of mourning for someone of such great importance.
- 6:52Moses had been their leader, their intercessor, their teacher,
- 6:56their lawgiver, and their friend.
- 6:58His absence would be felt profoundly.
- 7:01Verses 9-12 bring the chapter and the Pentateuch to a close by reaffirming Moses'
- 7:08unique position among the people of God.
- 7:11Joshua, filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on
- 7:15him, would now lead the Israelites, but Moses remained distinct.
- 7:21Verse 10 says, There arose not a prophet since in Israel unto Moses,
- 7:26whom the Lord knew face to face.
- 7:28It's a powerful testimony of Moses' intimacy with God and of the extraordinary
- 7:33signs and wonders God performed through him.
- 7:36These final verses highlight Moses' unique ministry.
- 7:41No one else had confronted Pharaoh. No one else had stood between God and the people as Moses had.
- 7:47No one else had received the law directly from the Lord.
- 7:52Moses' life was marked by miracles. Leadership, humility, and obedience.
- 7:58And this chapter closes with a fitting tribute to a man who walked faithfully with God.
- 8:04When we look at Deuteronomy 34, we are reminded that our lives are ultimately
- 8:10measured by our relationship with God.
- 8:13Moses's greatness was not based on his accomplishments, leadership skills, or miraculous deeds.
- 8:20His greatness was rooted in
- 8:22the simple and powerful truth that he knew the Lord and walked with him.
- 8:26This chapter teaches us that even the best servants of God have limitations.
- 8:31Moses had been a faithful leader, yet he could not enter the promised land.
- 8:35That was not a punishment as much as it was a reminder that the promised land
- 8:40would not come through Moses.
- 8:42It would come through Joshua and ultimately point forward to Jesus.
- 8:46Moses completed the work God gave him. Our job is not to do everything,
- 8:51but to be faithful in what God gives us to do.
- 8:54We also get to see God's deep compassion.
- 8:58He did not leave Moses to die alone. He took Moses up the mountain,
- 9:03showed him the fulfillment of the promise, and then buried him.
- 9:06But a perfect reminder that God is personally involved in the lives of those who love him.
- 9:12He cares for us in life, and he cares for us in death.
- 9:17Psalm 116 says that precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.
- 9:22Moses' life and death show us that truth.
- 9:26Joshua's rise to leadership reminds us that no one is irreplaceable in God's
- 9:31kingdom. The work continues.
- 9:34God raises up new leaders. His purposes never depend on one person alone.
- 9:39Moses was faithful, and Joshua would now be faithful.
- 9:43God still works this way. When one season ends, God provides what is needed in the next.
- 9:50The final verses of this chapter call us to reflect on our own walk with God.
- 9:55We may never stand before a Red Sea or confront a Pharaoh, but we can walk with.
- 10:01God in such a way that he becomes our treasure, our guide, and our strength.
- 10:08Moses' life reminds us that knowing God face-to-face is the greatest honor we
- 10:13will ever have, and this chapter encourages us to live in such a way that when our time comes,
- 10:20we too will have completed the work God gave us, and we too will be welcomed
- 10:26home by the Lord who loves us.
- 10:28Remember that you are loved. Jesus loves you.
