1:51
Speaker 3: Plus we're celebrating a bit of a milestone here today.
1:55
Speaker 3: Steve Bishop of v one hundred is celebrating his forty
1:59
Speaker 3: fifth and aniversary of working with this company. Now, somebody myself,
2:04
Speaker 3: I've been in radio a total of thirty seven years.
2:06
Speaker 3: I've only been here for about five and a half years.
2:10
Speaker 3: You don't realize what an incredible accomplishment that is in
2:13
Speaker 3: the world of radio or television for somebody to be
2:16
Speaker 3: in one place for that long. So we got a
2:18
Speaker 3: little celebration going on. The mayor stop buying, gave mister
2:22
Speaker 3: Bishop key to the city. Or in course he, as
2:24
Speaker 3: everybody always does, ask what does the key go to?
2:26
Speaker 3: So I don't think they've told him that, but we're
2:28
Speaker 3: going to bring him in the studio talk about his
2:30
Speaker 3: career a little bit later on. Some other folks are
2:32
Speaker 3: going to stop to celebrate mister Bishop as well. And
2:34
Speaker 3: speaking of celebration, today is my producer, Ryan Nicholson's birthday,
2:38
Speaker 3: So how about a big shout out to Ryan Nicholson,

Speaker 3: Without further ado, though, I want to welcome into the
2:52
Speaker 3: show the US Senator from West Virginia, shellymore Capito. Good morning, Senator,
2:57
Speaker 3: and welcome to the show.
2:59
Speaker 5: Good morning you are you're on a roll here, and
3:03
Speaker 5: I can I just say something about Steve Bishop because.
3:06
Speaker 3: Absolutely I have.
3:07
Speaker 5: Obviously, when I began, which was a long time ago,
3:10
Speaker 5: Steve was on Steve and Jenny, and I was so
3:14
Speaker 5: nervous to go down to to the studio to be
3:17
Speaker 5: interviewed by them or to talk with them. And back
3:20
Speaker 5: then you brought donuts. He would he would say, bring
3:24
Speaker 5: the donuts down. He doesn't do that anymore because now
3:27
Speaker 5: I see him out at all the all the walks
3:29
Speaker 5: and all the runs, and he's all healthy, and I'm like,
3:32
Speaker 5: where are the donuts, Senator?
3:34
Speaker 3: He still does it. Don't get me, I mean, don't
3:37
Speaker 3: let him fool you. He still does. As a matter
3:39
Speaker 3: of fact, they always plan these celebrations when I'm on
3:43
Speaker 3: the air, every time without fail, this, Oh we're all
3:45
Speaker 3: going to meet at nine o'clock. Oh great, Well, I'm
3:48
Speaker 3: kind of tied up at nine o'clock. But I can
3:50
Speaker 3: tell you that in the in the green room and
3:52
Speaker 3: in our conference room right now where the Steve Bishop
3:55
Speaker 3: celebrations going on, that I'm missing.
3:57
Speaker 6: Uh.
3:57
Speaker 3: There are pastries from Spring Help Pastry, and there are
4:02
Speaker 3: also some Chick fil A breakfast biscuits as well, and
4:06
Speaker 3: I'm missing all of it. When I go back in,
4:07
Speaker 3: there'll be a couple of crumbs here there. I hope
4:10
Speaker 3: there's some donuts, just for comfort, Just for comfort, all right.
4:14
Speaker 3: I want to switch gears here, of course, Williams on
4:16
Speaker 3: government shutdown, but I want to I want to get
4:18
Speaker 3: serious here for a moment. Of course, the world is
4:19
Speaker 3: mourning the death of Dick Cheney today, and I thought
4:22
Speaker 3: I would give you an opportunity to weigh in on
4:24
Speaker 3: the passing of Dick Cheney.
4:25
Speaker 5: Well, obviously, my first year in the Congress was when
4:28
Speaker 5: Dick Cheney was first elected as vice president. He had
4:32
Speaker 5: a storied history as being Secretary of Defense and chief
4:35
Speaker 5: of staff to a president at a very young age.
4:38
Speaker 5: He was a man of few words. He didn't really
4:41
Speaker 5: talk a lot. He came to Charleston several times to
4:43
Speaker 5: campaign for me. It was awesome, and so we had
4:47
Speaker 5: a great relationship. He cared a lot about the people
4:51
Speaker 5: of West Virginia, understood West Virginia being from a smaller
4:55
Speaker 5: state like Wyoming, and I think he was a pivotal
4:59
Speaker 5: person at a really difficult time after those nine to
5:01
Speaker 5: eleven attacks, and so our relationship. He knew my dad
5:06
Speaker 5: as well, having been in the house around the same time,
5:10
Speaker 5: and so I know that he and his I know
5:13
Speaker 5: that his family had struggles. I think he had his
5:15
Speaker 5: first heart attack when he was in his mid thirties.
5:18
Speaker 5: So he was a remarkable individual. But we had that
5:22
Speaker 5: little smirky smile. So he had a good sense of humor.
5:26
Speaker 5: But he was just a quiet man, but very patriotic
5:30
Speaker 5: and we will miss him.
5:32
Speaker 3: And I have done some reading and watched some biographies
5:35
Speaker 3: about Dick Cheney, and just what you said there, Senator,
5:38
Speaker 3: that's one of the things people said about him that
5:39
Speaker 3: knew in best was he was quiet, but he had
5:42
Speaker 3: a great sense of humor. And we've all known people
5:44
Speaker 3: like that in our life. When you look at him
5:46
Speaker 3: at a fart, you said, well, how's this person funny?
5:48
Speaker 3: But once you get to know them, they really are.
5:51
Speaker 3: And that's a couple of articles. And as I said,
5:52
Speaker 3: biographies i'd seen about Dick Cheney, they said he had
5:55
Speaker 3: a fantastic sense of humor, a little bit quiet, so
5:58
Speaker 3: you got to know him, right.
6:00
Speaker 5: And I think he was a steady hand during an
6:03
Speaker 5: unsteady time for our nation. And I know there's controversies
6:06
Speaker 5: as to what the policies that he helped formulate when
6:11
Speaker 5: President Bush, but you know, we have to go back
6:13
Speaker 5: to that time when we saw three thousand people killed
6:16
Speaker 5: in towers in New York. I mean, I don't think
6:18
Speaker 5: we ever thought something like that could ever happen. And
6:22
Speaker 5: a strong a man such as Dick Cheney, with a
6:24
Speaker 5: strong sense of core and sense of love of country,
6:29
Speaker 5: I think was a pivotal time for us. And he
6:32
Speaker 5: was also willing to take sort of the slings and
6:35
Speaker 5: arrows of politics. You know, it's a rough business and
6:38
Speaker 5: sometimes people fold under the pressure, but he never did.
6:42
Speaker 3: Talking with US Senator Shelley Moore Capito in the Life
6:45
Speaker 3: of Dick Cheney, Let's move on to some other things.
6:46
Speaker 3: I appreciate those kind words, I really do. It's now
6:51
Speaker 3: I think the tide for the longest shutdown, governmental shutdown,
6:54
Speaker 3: partial shutdown, whatever you want to call it in US history,
6:56
Speaker 3: is that right.
6:58
Speaker 5: It is, and it's certainly not a milestone to be
7:01
Speaker 5: proud of. It is miserable for everybody and becoming very
7:05
Speaker 5: personally miserable to a lot of West Virginians, whether it's
7:09
Speaker 5: food or other services contracts, et cetera, or people that
7:15
Speaker 5: are working for the government or tsa. Folks, it's really
7:17
Speaker 5: really rough and hopefully this will this will end this week.
7:22
Speaker 5: There are some there's some blue sky here, but not
7:27
Speaker 5: enough right now for me to make that prediction. Unfortunately.
7:30
Speaker 3: Well, and we know, you know, the last week, last Friday,
7:33
Speaker 3: I guess it was a couple of judges came out
7:36
Speaker 3: and said that they had to be they had that
7:39
Speaker 3: the Snap benefits had to be the money had to
7:42
Speaker 3: go into it. And we know, as you said, there
7:44
Speaker 3: is some blue sky, if you will, but it's going
7:46
Speaker 3: to be slow coming to get these people caught up
7:49
Speaker 3: because it's not a Okay, we're good, let's start, you know,
7:52
Speaker 3: loading the cards. That's not the way that this thing works.
7:54
Speaker 3: And we're talking about center, we're talking about somewhere like
7:57
Speaker 3: sixteen percent, as you said, millions of West virgin Onions
8:00
Speaker 3: that didn't have their Snap cards loaded on Saturday.
8:04
Speaker 7: I know.
8:04
Speaker 5: And I actually heard a story yesterday of a woman
8:07
Speaker 5: who was shopping in a Walmart and her cart was
8:10
Speaker 5: full and when she got to the register, you know,
8:14
Speaker 5: the cashier I had to say, you don't have any
8:16
Speaker 5: money on your card, and she just left in tears,
8:18
Speaker 5: had to leave the basket and everything. She didn't have
8:20
Speaker 5: enough money. And I'm sure that was happening everywhere. It's
8:23
Speaker 5: a disservice to everybody. Some states are able to pay.
8:26
Speaker 5: I know the governor and others have really tried to
8:28
Speaker 5: fill the gap here, and I'm very pleased about that.
8:31
Speaker 5: But there shouldn't be a gap to fill. I mean,
8:34
Speaker 5: we've had this vote, we're going to have it again
8:36
Speaker 5: fourteen times to open the government. This could have been
8:39
Speaker 5: avoided thirty five, thirty whatever day we're on, thirty five
8:42
Speaker 5: or thirty six days days ago while we negotiated other
8:46
Speaker 5: things like healthcare and other things. But the politics have
8:49
Speaker 5: gotten in the way, unfortunately, and now we're hearing well,
8:52
Speaker 5: I'll wait till the elections today in Virginia and New
8:56
Speaker 5: Jersey and New York. I mean, there's always another milestone
8:59
Speaker 5: that was that we have to get through before five
9:02
Speaker 5: saying Democrats will vote and open the government. That's what
9:06
Speaker 5: we're down to, all right.
9:07
Speaker 3: I know you're on the very limited schedule, So I
9:09
Speaker 3: do want to ask you one other thing. Though the
9:11
Speaker 3: President has come out and said maybe it's time in
9:14
Speaker 3: this situation or others, that we that we need to
9:16
Speaker 3: do away with the filibuster. Your thoughts on.
9:18
Speaker 5: That, well, I am on record and I've said many
9:21
Speaker 5: times that I don't believe eliminating the filibuster is a
9:26
Speaker 5: smart thing for the future of our country, simply because
9:29
Speaker 5: it preserves rights of the minority and it forces us
9:33
Speaker 5: into negotiation into I think, better solutions. And so if
9:37
Speaker 5: the you know, if the argument is the Democrats are
9:40
Speaker 5: going to be in charge and they're going to do it, well,
9:42
Speaker 5: they're going to pack the court, do voting rights, work
9:45
Speaker 5: on abortion and gun rights, other things that they you know,
9:51
Speaker 5: QW too. And I just think that for the tradition
9:55
Speaker 5: and for the future, that the the filibuster preserve, nerves
10:01
Speaker 5: and leads us to better policies. So and I also
10:04
Speaker 5: signed a letter in December of twenty seventeen that said
10:08
Speaker 5: that I would not vote to eliminate the filibuster. You know,
10:10
Speaker 5: I don't write letters and make promises and then take
10:13
Speaker 5: them away. So I'm pretty much locked in.
10:15
Speaker 3: Senor Shelley Moore capital give me about thirty seconds. I
10:18
Speaker 3: know you have to go. But to your message to
10:19
Speaker 3: the people of West Virginia, well, I would have.
10:23
Speaker 5: To say to that this week that looks like we've
10:26
Speaker 5: got a little blue sky here to reopen the government.
10:29
Speaker 5: The disservice that's been paid to West Virginians is so
10:32
Speaker 5: avoidable without the political scenario that we find ourselves in.
10:37
Speaker 5: And I've been working hard to trying to find solutions
10:39
Speaker 5: across the aisle, which is I would think most people
10:42
Speaker 5: would expect me to do.
10:43
Speaker 3: Senor Shelley Moore Capito, appreciate you being here. Thanks a lot, great, thanks,
10:47
Speaker 3: have a good day.

Speaker 3: me tell you if you didn't get them already the
16:01
Speaker 3: way these jackals are here. Buddy, you're done too late,
16:03
Speaker 3: You're done.
16:04
Speaker 11: Yeah.
16:05
Speaker 3: I have no thoughts in my head that when I
16:08
Speaker 3: walk out of this studio at nine to fifty nine
16:10
Speaker 3: that there's good to be anything left it there none whatsoever.
16:13
Speaker 3: So tell us about this festival, tell us what the
16:16
Speaker 3: purpose of it is.
16:17
Speaker 11: So yeah, it's our fortyth anniversary festival. The festival is
16:20
Speaker 11: formed in nineteen eighty five. It's been a few years
16:24
Speaker 11: since we've been able to have an actual festival format,
16:26
Speaker 11: first due to you know, COVID, Plus we also operate
16:29
Speaker 11: a year round cinema now, so that kind of takes
16:32
Speaker 11: a lot of time as well. So we wanted to, though,
16:35
Speaker 11: for our forty anniversary, get back to a good festival
16:37
Speaker 11: format and just you know, we like to highlight films
16:40
Speaker 11: at our local cinema and in our festival that won't
16:43
Speaker 11: show up at you know, the local big theaters and
16:47
Speaker 11: things like that. Most of these are international and independent
16:50
Speaker 11: films that might not even play in the US at
16:52
Speaker 11: all in some cases. Talk about your interest in this, yeah,
16:55
Speaker 11: So I first became aware of it probably twenty five
16:58
Speaker 11: years ago when I was a student at State, you know,
17:01
Speaker 11: I was in the communications program there and a lot
17:03
Speaker 11: of the professors were told me about this film festival
17:06
Speaker 11: coming up. So I started going way back then, and
17:09
Speaker 11: I've been on and off over the years many times.
17:12
Speaker 11: So it was twenty seventeen when they started opening the cinema.
17:15
Speaker 11: The VAUNT started volunteering down there and helping out, you know,
17:19
Speaker 11: doing a little bit of painting down there back in
17:21
Speaker 11: the day, and then eventually just joined the board and
17:24
Speaker 11: became the president of few years after that.
17:26
Speaker 3: So we'll talk about your personal interest. Well, what is
17:28
Speaker 3: it about international film that I mean, because that you know,
17:32
Speaker 3: kind of got you involved in this. Why do you
17:33
Speaker 3: like it so much?
17:34
Speaker 11: I like just the idea of, you know, getting to see,
17:37
Speaker 11: you know, the world through other people's perspectives. Right, you know,
17:41
Speaker 11: we're gonna we have films from China, Norway, Ireland, Morocco,
17:47
Speaker 11: so we just get to see the world through a
17:50
Speaker 11: very different set of eyes, especially like the Chinese one
17:54
Speaker 11: is very outside of most of our lived experiences at
17:57
Speaker 11: the time.
17:57
Speaker 3: So all right, and where is the first and win
18:00
Speaker 3: is the festival?
18:01
Speaker 11: So it's November thirteenth through the sixteenth. It's going to
18:03
Speaker 11: take place largely at Park Place Cinemas and then also
18:07
Speaker 11: at our cinema underneath the Taylor Books, the Flora Lee
18:10
Speaker 11: Hart Cohen Cinema. So we've got films playing both days
18:14
Speaker 11: in both places until the evening when we all kind
18:16
Speaker 11: of come together for our headlining features.
18:19
Speaker 3: I'm just and we'll get to those features here in
18:20
Speaker 3: a moment. Again, we're talking to Delford chaff in West Virginia.
18:23
Speaker 3: International Film festival. I just wonder what a difference that
18:27
Speaker 3: the Internet has made in all these because, as you said,
18:29
Speaker 3: a lot of these films that you're going to be
18:30
Speaker 3: showing aren't necessarily ones that you're going to see at
18:33
Speaker 3: your at your multiplex and so on and so forth.
18:35
Speaker 3: You're probably not going to find them on in many cases,
18:38
Speaker 3: even on some of the some of the streaming services
18:40
Speaker 3: one of the more quote unquote traditional ones. But how
18:43
Speaker 3: has it changed with the with the internet.
18:45
Speaker 11: Well, I mean not just the internet, but home theater
18:47
Speaker 11: as well. Yeah, has certainly, you know, changed the amount
18:51
Speaker 11: that people go to the movies and just in general,
18:53
Speaker 11: I think, you know, the studios and the films are
18:56
Speaker 11: being made also have something to play in that sometimes.
18:59
Speaker 11: But and even when we see that, it depends on
19:02
Speaker 11: what the movie is, whether people are interested in coming
19:04
Speaker 11: out to see it versus staying home or watching it online.
19:08
Speaker 11: But yeah, even though you can see so many films
19:12
Speaker 11: now at home on the internet, some of the films
19:13
Speaker 11: we're playing are I still haven't been able to find
19:16
Speaker 11: streaming anywhere. So, you know, the film I mentioned from
19:20
Speaker 11: Norway that director has twenty years of films and I
19:22
Speaker 11: haven't been able to find any of them streaming.
19:25
Speaker 3: So given to it's not showing up on the on
19:29
Speaker 3: the local streaming service cars what you're saying.
19:31
Speaker 11: Yeah, some of them eventually will, but not all of them.
19:34
Speaker 3: It's always interesting to me, you know, in this time
19:38
Speaker 3: of uh as someone once called it short attention span theater, right,
19:41
Speaker 3: that we all have now when everything's TikTok and everything's
19:45
Speaker 3: like five ten second yeah, you know, snapchat videos or
19:48
Speaker 3: YouTube or whatever, and if it's over a minute, you know,
19:51
Speaker 3: you're not going to have people anymore.
19:53
Speaker 11: Yeah, we do have some you know, help for some
19:56
Speaker 11: of those people too. We have four shorts that are
19:58
Speaker 11: made okay here in West Virginia.
20:00
Speaker 3: I say that because this proves though that there is
20:03
Speaker 3: still something. Oh yeah, you said for quote unquote long form,
20:06
Speaker 3: which would be anything more than about ten minutes, right,
20:09
Speaker 3: talk about those shorts that you have.
20:10
Speaker 11: So we have four West Virginia kind of short films.
20:13
Speaker 11: One is Breaking Them Old by Justin Litton. It's a
20:16
Speaker 11: story on Blinko Glass. It's about thirty minutes long. There's
20:20
Speaker 11: another film called In Waiting and by local filmmaker he
20:23
Speaker 11: used to be. He lives in California now, but he's
20:25
Speaker 11: from here. There's a film called Coming Home by Doug
20:28
Speaker 11: and Brogno who you might know. It's about no the name,
20:31
Speaker 11: yeah yeah, de institutionalization here in West Virginia. And then
20:35
Speaker 11: finally there's a film called Why Ukraine Matters. It's kind
20:38
Speaker 11: of talks about the similarities between the people and Naplatcha
20:40
Speaker 11: and the people in Ukraine's.
20:43
Speaker 3: And that's interesting to me because when you think international
20:46
Speaker 3: Film Festival, automatically people's minds go to someplace totally different.
20:52
Speaker 3: And there are the I'm sure artsy and the big
20:55
Speaker 3: movies and things, but this takes in a lot of ground.
20:57
Speaker 11: What you're talking about here. We've got, you know, all
21:00
Speaker 11: of different films. I mean, there are some artsier pictures,
21:03
Speaker 11: like the Chinese film is very cinemilarity. It's very like
21:06
Speaker 11: are just a real life experience almost, It's almost like
21:09
Speaker 11: you're watching these people live their lives instead of a movie.
21:12
Speaker 3: But what uh, what are some of the things that
21:15
Speaker 3: I mean, I know you're going to be a part
21:16
Speaker 3: of it, but what are some of the things that
21:17
Speaker 3: you that that excited you about this particular festival and
21:20
Speaker 3: the films are going to be shown.
21:22
Speaker 11: Just the opportunity to get it back, especially at park Place.
21:25
Speaker 11: It's kind of a cool opportunity.
21:26
Speaker 3: So we had to text somebody said they thought park
21:27
Speaker 3: Place was closed. It is closed, but but it's open
21:30
Speaker 3: for this festival.
21:31
Speaker 12: Yeah.
21:31
Speaker 11: The City of Charleston owns it and they're looking for
21:34
Speaker 11: a new tenant in there, but I don't know any
21:36
Speaker 11: updates on that. But they are being generous enough to
21:39
Speaker 11: let us use that space for a couple of days,
21:41
Speaker 11: and they've been maintaining it and stuff.
21:42
Speaker 3: Yeah. How I was going to say, how are the
21:44
Speaker 3: facilities there, because it's nice a maintain.
21:47
Speaker 11: Yeah, there's some things have been taken out obviously, but
21:50
Speaker 11: you know, they just did some updated work on the
21:52
Speaker 11: restrooms and things like that and everything's I love.
21:54
Speaker 3: I love Delford. I love when people when cities, you know,
21:58
Speaker 3: community groups, people like yourself, when they get involved with
22:01
Speaker 3: these with these older theaters and they say because they're
22:03
Speaker 3: still I mean I know they do they're doing and
22:05
Speaker 3: sometimes it's not all films, you know, sometimes there could
22:07
Speaker 3: be theater. It could be music. I know the folks
22:10
Speaker 3: at the Alburn Theatre and saying albits of double job.
22:12
Speaker 3: The LaBelle Theater in South Charleston. We have a theater
22:14
Speaker 3: in my hometown called the Coalfield Jamboree, the old Logan
22:17
Speaker 3: Theater that seats well over a thousand people and they
22:21
Speaker 3: still they don't use it for films, but they still
22:23
Speaker 3: use it for things in the community. They have concerts
22:26
Speaker 3: there and things of that nature. I love when people,
22:28
Speaker 3: mainly volunteers, come together bring these things back to life.
22:31
Speaker 11: Yeah. Now, our friends at the Mountaincraft Film Fest weapon Clarksburg,
22:34
Speaker 11: they've been using the Robinson Grand the pasts.
22:36
Speaker 3: It's a theater.
22:37
Speaker 11: That's a nice space.
22:38
Speaker 3: What a great facility it is. But Dave Alan show
22:40
Speaker 3: in five eighty Live is brought to you part by
22:42
Speaker 3: fresh Air Filters of Tayses Valley. Fresh Air, your trusted
22:44
Speaker 3: filter experts are both your home or business called three
22:47
Speaker 3: zero four four four zero one one zero four. Visit
22:50
Speaker 3: fresh Air Filters dot us because everyone deserves fresh air.
22:53
Speaker 3: So there's gonna be a lot of excitement around this.
22:56
Speaker 3: And hats off to you and the others for for
22:58
Speaker 3: for bringing this thing back.
22:59
Speaker 13: Man.
23:00
Speaker 11: Thanks, it's a it's a you know, we're an all
23:01
Speaker 11: volunteer organization, our board, and you know we're all kind
23:04
Speaker 11: of coming together to make this happen. One thing I'll mention,
23:07
Speaker 11: we do have a couple workshops on Saturday morning with
23:10
Speaker 11: Tijer Bumgardner is a film professor at and filmmaker locally,
23:13
Speaker 11: uh and Clara Lehman and Jonathan Lecoke out a Helvisha
23:17
Speaker 11: who owned an animation company up there and made a
23:19
Speaker 11: couple of great films that we've shown recently. And then
23:22
Speaker 11: on Sunday morning we have a brunch kind of meet
23:24
Speaker 11: up with the Westernian Film Office and the Filmmakers Guild,
23:28
Speaker 11: so they're all going to be there. That'll be over
23:29
Speaker 11: at Coco's.
23:30
Speaker 3: And you mentioned the Film Office in West Virginia. I
23:33
Speaker 3: know that there has been such a movement on over
23:36
Speaker 3: the years to make West Virginia a place where people
23:39
Speaker 3: can come not only to produce great films by West Virginian's,
23:43
Speaker 3: you know, but also to get other people to come here.
23:46
Speaker 3: Talk about that.
23:46
Speaker 11: Yeah, I know. Dave Lavender's head of the Film office
23:48
Speaker 11: right now. Pam Haynes was over back in the day
23:50
Speaker 11: and she was very involved with the film festival years ago.
23:53
Speaker 11: But now, yeah, Dave Lavender is doing a great job
23:55
Speaker 11: over there, bringing you know, films and shoots and stuff
23:59
Speaker 11: into the end of the state. There's a lot of talent
24:01
Speaker 11: here that gets used elsewhere as well.
24:03
Speaker 3: So well, and it always you know, when there's a
24:06
Speaker 3: film that's being made in a West Virginia is the
24:08
Speaker 3: setting or it's got West Virginia, the fact that they
24:11
Speaker 3: film it in New Jersey or something like that, it's
24:14
Speaker 3: just I'm just like, why not just do it here?
24:16
Speaker 11: Yeah, it's probably cheaper here.
24:18
Speaker 3: Yeah, well yeah, I mean, we know, the cost of
24:20
Speaker 3: living stuff is cheaper here as well, and you're gonna
24:23
Speaker 3: probably get a cheaper meal catering. Catering is going to
24:26
Speaker 3: be a lot to talk about the role of the
24:28
Speaker 3: volunteers though, I mean, like yourself and others in order
24:31
Speaker 3: to to to bring this thing together.
24:33
Speaker 11: Yeah, as I said, our board is all volunteers, So
24:35
Speaker 11: it's all of us, you know, working together in our
24:37
Speaker 11: spare time to kind of put this together and research
24:40
Speaker 11: these films and you know, do all the marketing and
24:43
Speaker 11: reaching out and actually, you know, we have a call
24:45
Speaker 11: out to volunteers right now to help us during the festival,
24:48
Speaker 11: and we've got a number of people you know that
24:50
Speaker 11: aren't on our board regularly showing up to do that,
24:53
Speaker 11: you know, check people in you know, run the concession
24:55
Speaker 11: stands like those types of things. So it's a it's
24:58
Speaker 11: a lot of work. And I have volunt tiered down
25:01
Speaker 11: at the cinema like as I mentioned in the past
25:02
Speaker 11: when they're building it, and so you know, we're doing
25:04
Speaker 11: some painting down there right now. So if anybody has
25:06
Speaker 11: a paint brush they want to break down this weekend,
25:09
Speaker 11: let me know you need volunteers.
25:11
Speaker 3: How can people reach you if they would like to
25:13
Speaker 3: volunteer for this thing or just to learn more. We'll
25:14
Speaker 3: get to the websites and social media and so on,
25:17
Speaker 3: but yea for you personally, if somebody would like to volunteer.
25:19
Speaker 11: I mean, I'm on Facebook, as Delfred Chafin. I'm pretty
25:22
Speaker 11: easy to find. But you know, just check out our
25:24
Speaker 11: website as you mentioned of VFF dot org is the
25:26
Speaker 11: best place to get a hold of us, or just
25:28
Speaker 11: search for us on the Facebook or the Instagram.
25:30
Speaker 3: So all right, and they give us the dates again
25:33
Speaker 3: in the locations.
25:33
Speaker 11: It's November thirteenth through the sixteenth. It's going to be
25:36
Speaker 11: largely at Park Place. But when we're having to each
25:39
Speaker 11: films show at least twice, so some of those will
25:41
Speaker 11: be at the floor. Lee as well. Friday night we
25:44
Speaker 11: have a movie trivia night at five Street and our
25:46
Speaker 11: brunches at Cocos. So we have four different locations, all
25:49
Speaker 11: kind of walkable there within central Charleston here.
25:53
Speaker 3: And we'll give a big shout out to the folks
25:54
Speaker 3: at five Street because we have a great partnership with
25:57
Speaker 3: them there. Our sister station in the Mountain is going
25:58
Speaker 3: to be there live Thursday night. Coco's. By the way,
26:01
Speaker 3: if you know this or not, Coco's was the people's
26:04
Speaker 3: choice champions at the Mac and Cheese Festival at Capital
26:07
Speaker 3: Market this past week.
26:08
Speaker 11: I did not make it that because, as I said,
26:10
Speaker 11: I was painting.
26:10
Speaker 3: You're busy painting and you need more painters right now,
26:13
Speaker 3: all right, Delfred, I appreciate you taking time to be here.
26:15
Speaker 3: Man now all time, all right, to hang out with

30:37
Speaker 3: a couple of texts here. Texas Shelley voted for Capitol Care,
30:40
Speaker 3: which is why the Democrats had to stand up to
30:42
Speaker 3: the Republicans the only way they could. Republicans have done
30:45
Speaker 3: this in the past when they were in the minority,
30:48
Speaker 3: it says a Texster. Texter says Charleston City workers. If
30:53
Speaker 3: you can hear me beer at park Place Movie Theater,
30:55
Speaker 3: that's a texture, tex says for someone who loves taking
31:00
Speaker 3: rich people's money. I wonder if Zoho has confronted his
31:05
Speaker 3: own millionaire mommy, either it's her two million dollar condo
31:09
Speaker 3: in Chelsea, Oregon, in her Columbia sumpsonized apartment about handing
31:13
Speaker 3: over fifty to sixty percent of our wealth to the
31:16
Speaker 3: New York Tax Department or to any poor person in
31:20
Speaker 3: New York City, twenty two minutes away from ten. We're
31:23
Speaker 3: celebrating a milestone today. We're celebrating Ryan Nicholson's birthday, our
31:28
Speaker 3: producer Ryan Today's birthday. But we're also is it really
31:32
Speaker 3: but yeah, it is. But we're also celebrating a little
31:34
Speaker 3: bit our guy, Steve Bishop, forty five years. You've been
31:39
Speaker 3: with this company, mister Bishop, forty five years, not entirely
31:42
Speaker 3: this company, Okay, okay.
31:44
Speaker 17: So I don't know how it's been nineteen ninety early
31:49
Speaker 17: nineties they bought V one hundred.
31:51
Speaker 3: Okay, okay, And so it's been thirty thirty some years
31:55
Speaker 3: with them, and it hasn't always all been in this building, right, Uh, Okay,
31:58
Speaker 3: talk about let's back up, let's talk about your your
32:03
Speaker 3: coming to Charleston.
32:04
Speaker 17: By coming to Charleston was not expected I but I
32:08
Speaker 17: was looking for somewhere to go to get more experience
32:12
Speaker 17: because I was working in Charlotte and people asked me,
32:14
Speaker 17: why did you leave Charlotte to come here? Well, this
32:18
Speaker 17: was a better opportunity for me at the point of
32:20
Speaker 17: the career, my career that I was in, so I
32:23
Speaker 17: came here. It's almost like I went from the major markets,
32:28
Speaker 17: you know, like the big ball team back to the
32:31
Speaker 17: minor leagues. But that's that's kind of the thinking then.
32:37
Speaker 17: So I would come here, get a little bit better,
32:40
Speaker 17: get some more experience, and I would move along up,
32:44
Speaker 17: you know, to a bigger city. Well who knew, because
32:48
Speaker 17: I said earlier Charleston was like the one year, one
32:51
Speaker 17: to two year plan, and so I thought, okay, it's
32:54
Speaker 17: November nineteen eighty. I get here Election Day nineteen eighty.
32:58
Speaker 17: My first day on V one hundred was a day
33:00
Speaker 17: Ronald Reagan was elected president the first time. That's how
33:03
Speaker 17: I've remembered this.
33:04
Speaker 3: Do you remember any music that you played on that
33:05
Speaker 3: first thing?
33:06
Speaker 7: No?
33:06
Speaker 17: And what shift were you working? I came to work
33:09
Speaker 17: in the and I was on in the afternoon. Okay,
33:11
Speaker 17: So I moved to the morning show in February of
33:13
Speaker 17: nineteen eighty four, and I've been doing it ever since been.
33:17
Speaker 17: I was thinking about this last night. There have been
33:19
Speaker 17: four people that did the V one hundred morning show
33:22
Speaker 17: three prior to me, and so in me and whoever
33:25
Speaker 17: inherits it.
33:26
Speaker 3: When I leave, you're not leaving.
33:28
Speaker 17: You don't think? No, No, I don't know. I don't
33:31
Speaker 17: really know when when it's enough. I really don't. I
33:34
Speaker 17: think about It's more in my head now than it's
33:37
Speaker 17: ever been. Well, it does, because people start asking you. Yeah,
33:40
Speaker 17: I turned sixty years old. People going started going when
33:42
Speaker 17: are you retire? And I went, I've never even thought
33:45
Speaker 17: about it, never.
33:47
Speaker 3: Sane I mean, are you sixty years old?
33:51
Speaker 11: No?
33:51
Speaker 3: No, fifty five, fifty five.
33:54
Speaker 17: But you got a long way.
33:55
Speaker 3: But I've been doing this for thirty seven years with
33:58
Speaker 3: this company, only for five though I don't intent I'll
34:00
Speaker 3: ever return. I mean I'm just gonna have one day
34:03
Speaker 3: to hear and that's it. I'm done, and Ryan or somebody,
34:07
Speaker 3: or Ryan Junior or somebody's gonna have to come in
34:09
Speaker 3: and just like these. It's funny you.
34:11
Speaker 17: Say that, because I've had people tell me. My former
34:15
Speaker 17: wife told me one time, she said, you're Paul. You're
34:18
Speaker 17: the Paul Howard. For those of you who don't know,
34:20
Speaker 17: Paul Howard worked until Paul Howard would have come to
34:23
Speaker 17: work the day he died at ninety three if he
34:26
Speaker 17: could have, but he couldn't. But my former wife told
34:29
Speaker 17: me one time, she said, you're you're You're Paul Howard,
34:32
Speaker 17: and she said you'll probably die on the air. Now,
34:36
Speaker 17: she wasn't being mean, she was just being honest, like
34:38
Speaker 17: she knows how knew how much I cared about what
34:41
Speaker 17: I do and how much how much I've enjoyed it
34:44
Speaker 17: and how much it's my it's been my life. That
34:48
Speaker 17: she said, you probably drop dead on the air. And
34:51
Speaker 17: I said, well, I hope that I hit the microphone
34:52
Speaker 17: and turn it on as it happens, so that everybody
34:55
Speaker 17: can tell maybe call nine one one. Steve seems to
34:58
Speaker 17: be not functioning.
35:00
Speaker 3: Steve has more dead air than normal.
35:02
Speaker 17: Yes, there might be something going on. You better get
35:05
Speaker 17: the authorities out there.
35:06
Speaker 3: So I don't know if you answered it. I but
35:08
Speaker 3: do do you remember any of the music you played?
35:10
Speaker 3: Because I'm trying to think I'm kind of a mute February.
35:12
Speaker 3: I'm sorry. In November of nineteen eighty, John Lennon was
35:17
Speaker 3: still living because he was killed the following month, So
35:19
Speaker 3: I don't know. Yes, that album had come out, Double Fantasy,
35:21
Speaker 3: I think it was out at that time.
35:22
Speaker 17: She might have been playing I was playing songs.
35:24
Speaker 3: Off there, starting Over, Yeah, yeah, all right.
35:27
Speaker 17: Starting Over I think was the hit song.
35:29
Speaker 18: Then.
35:29
Speaker 17: Yes, that that's talk about something happened, major happening in
35:34
Speaker 17: your career, because you remember things like that. And I
35:38
Speaker 17: wasn't on the air then. That was that night, but
35:40
Speaker 17: I remember being watching Monday Night like everybody, and they
35:44
Speaker 17: broke in and said what had happened? And I remember
35:47
Speaker 17: the next morning. You know, I didn't work that morning,
35:51
Speaker 17: but I remember the guy that was on and he
35:55
Speaker 17: just he was a huge Beatles fan. He was just devastated.
35:58
Speaker 19: It was.
35:59
Speaker 17: It was terrible. I remember, I was this is the
36:02
Speaker 17: weird for me. I was on the air in Charlotte
36:06
Speaker 17: not on the air at the time, but I had
36:07
Speaker 17: to work that night when Elvis died, and that I
36:11
Speaker 17: didn't I had to ask my boss, I don't know
36:13
Speaker 17: what to do. Tell me how I should be on
36:16
Speaker 17: the radio because I was so new at it. Yeah,
36:18
Speaker 17: I just said, I don't know, I don't know, and
36:20
Speaker 17: he just he laid it out there. But that was
36:23
Speaker 17: that was huge. There have been lots of things. I
36:26
Speaker 17: remember this. This will maybe not be funny to some people,
36:30
Speaker 17: but the day that Ronald Reagan was shot, remember that. Yeah,
36:36
Speaker 17: when I was working in the afternoon, the guy, the
36:38
Speaker 17: guy that was my newsman, he he hadn't come in
36:42
Speaker 17: to tell me. There are people calling and saying, I
36:46
Speaker 17: don't know if you heard, but the President's been shot
36:48
Speaker 17: in Washington, and so that's a pretty big deal. I
36:52
Speaker 17: go into the newsroom and I and I said, hey,
36:56
Speaker 17: I want to embarrass him here. But I don't know
36:59
Speaker 17: if he's still around or not. But I said, people
37:02
Speaker 17: are calling telling me that the president's been shot. And
37:05
Speaker 17: he goes, yeah, he goes, I'm going to get that
37:07
Speaker 17: on and those at the top of the eye. I'm thinking, like,
37:11
Speaker 17: I think you need to come in here.
37:12
Speaker 3: Right now and let everybody know that we're talking to
37:15
Speaker 3: Steve Bishop celebrating his forty fifth anniversary here of a
37:17
Speaker 3: Dave Islands show on five Any Lives. Brought to you
37:19
Speaker 3: probably by Pinnacle Consultants. Pinnacle offers a four phase assessment
37:22
Speaker 3: for your properties, inspection, sampling, an analysis, comprehensive reporting and
37:26
Speaker 3: management planning. Check out Pinnacle Corp dot net. Because what
37:28
Speaker 3: you don't know can't hurt you. Was radio something, Steve,
37:31
Speaker 3: what you always wanted to do? I think about the
37:35
Speaker 3: fifth grade is when I became fascinated with it. And
37:39
Speaker 3: what was it that led to you?
37:41
Speaker 20: Well?
37:42
Speaker 17: I thought, okay, I saw a guy at the County Fair.
37:44
Speaker 3: Everybody's got a storyline doing his radio.
37:46
Speaker 17: Show remotely playing forty five records remote, you know, on
37:52
Speaker 17: the location there, and I thought that looks kind of
37:55
Speaker 17: cool and I don't know, and then I thought it
37:59
Speaker 17: might be a good way to get girls.
38:00
Speaker 19: You know.
38:03
Speaker 17: Well, it's funny. I met both my wives through my job.
38:06
Speaker 3: So how did that turn out for I'm just kidding,
38:08
Speaker 3: I can get.
38:11
Speaker 17: Well, we're over to.
38:12
Speaker 3: Okay, Well, there's still hope though, we're done. You know,
38:15
Speaker 3: we're done. Jex says, uh Dave's right, Steve, You're not
38:18
Speaker 3: gonna leave because we're not gonna let you leave. Congratulations,
38:21
Speaker 3: Thank you, congratulate Neil Cooper. Let me bring Neale Cooper
38:24
Speaker 3: in here just for a moment.
38:27
Speaker 17: What you've heard enough of my old radio stories.
38:29
Speaker 3: No, no, no, no, no, I'm not I'm not.
38:31
Speaker 17: I can't. I can't even feel out why you'd want
38:33
Speaker 17: me down here on this show to start with. You
38:35
Speaker 17: must have who canceled?
38:36
Speaker 3: Well, if you, if you must know, Steve so so
38:41
Speaker 3: Dale Cooper, you are a Charleston guy. Okay, I am not,
38:45
Speaker 3: but I grew up. I know you hate hearing that,
38:48
Speaker 3: but I hear it all the time too. I grew
38:49
Speaker 3: up listening to Steve Bishop idea. But you saw him
38:52
Speaker 3: out and about in the community growing up in Charleston. Yeah,
38:54
Speaker 3: I did see Steve.
38:55
Speaker 18: Steve was a fixture of my I hate to say childhood, Steve,
38:58
Speaker 18: but to some degree, and nineteen eighty I was.
39:00
Speaker 3: I don't.
39:01
Speaker 17: I don't hate that. That's okay. It's forty five years
39:03
Speaker 17: a long time, it is.
39:04
Speaker 21: It is.
39:05
Speaker 18: I was six in nineteen eighty, so.
39:07
Speaker 17: I'm almost sixty eight years old now. It's okay.
39:10
Speaker 18: And I remember I remember Steve later Bill Shahan and
39:13
Speaker 18: all of the big guys for the Charleston area, and
39:16
Speaker 18: I V one hundred was over in Kannall City for
39:18
Speaker 18: the longest time, right it was.
39:19
Speaker 17: We were on top of the right Ad drug store
39:21
Speaker 17: when I got here, and now I don't even know
39:24
Speaker 17: what it is.
39:25
Speaker 18: It's it's incredible because growing up in Kanall City, we
39:29
Speaker 18: had our phone number over there was nine two five
39:31
Speaker 18: eight six o and UH the for the AM station
39:36
Speaker 18: at V one hundred was six eighty at the time, right,
39:38
Speaker 18: So we would get on every especially Christmas morning, we
39:41
Speaker 18: would get UH phone calls for for for nine to
39:45
Speaker 18: five six eight oh so for for six eighty. So
39:47
Speaker 18: I always knew somehow or nother that six eighty and
39:49
Speaker 18: V one hundred was somehow related, yes, back then, and
39:53
Speaker 18: Steve was one of the UH was the guy that
39:56
Speaker 18: I knew as far as radio goes, that that was Steve.
39:58
Speaker 18: And I was in Rady. I got in the first time.
40:01
Speaker 18: Don Cook brought me on in the early nineties and
40:04
Speaker 18: I worked here, but I didn't work with Steve a
40:06
Speaker 18: lot then. I was mostly overnight. Maybe we saw each
40:09
Speaker 18: other occasionally in the mornings or something like that if
40:10
Speaker 18: I worked an overnight shift or I worked over on CHS,
40:14
Speaker 18: So I didn't see Steve a lot when I came back,
40:16
Speaker 18: though in twenty ten. I worked here twice before I
40:18
Speaker 18: came back in twenty ten, and I've been here constantly
40:20
Speaker 18: since then. The first time that I was super nervous
40:24
Speaker 18: on radio was was doing traffic for Steve and Jenny.
40:27
Speaker 18: It's the only time that I was ever super nervous
40:30
Speaker 18: was was work. It was just it was like because
40:33
Speaker 18: it was somebody that you knew, so like like I
40:35
Speaker 18: didn't know but sort of knew and I and I
40:37
Speaker 18: was like, man, I want to screw this up, and
40:39
Speaker 18: I don't want to screw up like the best morning
40:40
Speaker 18: show in the city, and I don't want to be
40:42
Speaker 18: I don't know what I want to do to ruin
40:44
Speaker 18: this thing. And all my days I've been nervous about
40:46
Speaker 18: other things, like for me, but as far as just
40:49
Speaker 18: being on the air, sharing air with someone, Being on
40:51
Speaker 18: air with Stephen Jenny was the first time and maybe
40:53
Speaker 18: the only time I've ever been really nervous.
40:54
Speaker 3: Where's Jenny, By the way she is?
40:56
Speaker 2: She?
40:57
Speaker 17: I don't know, she must not have a month time.
40:59
Speaker 6: I have a lot.
41:01
Speaker 3: Oh, speak of the devil.
41:03
Speaker 17: Well, Coop, thank you for that. And I'm sure after
41:06
Speaker 17: you worked with me on the Metro News Hotline show,
41:09
Speaker 17: you're like, oh my god, why was I older?
41:12
Speaker 20: You didn't even get a chance to get to that.
41:13
Speaker 18: Honestly, some of the best times I've ever had.
41:15
Speaker 17: Oh, thank you.
41:16
Speaker 3: Well, we'll say that for the fiftieth anniversary. How's that?
41:18
Speaker 17: Well, that's next year. Fifty years here. Oh that means
41:23
Speaker 17: I got to work for five more years exactly.
41:25
Speaker 3: But Dave Iland showing five Indy Line brought to you

41:48
Speaker 3: Jenny Murray. How you doing.
41:49
Speaker 6: I'm good.
41:50
Speaker 22: I was told nine fifty to speak.
41:52
Speaker 17: Okay, no, you were told nine forty.
41:55
Speaker 3: Oh, sorry about that. Here we go we're going to
41:58
Speaker 3: take it to this point and the partner ship's going
42:00
Speaker 3: to end today.
42:01
Speaker 17: I do have add so there you talk about if
42:04
Speaker 17: it hasn't ended yet, I don't think it's going to
42:06
Speaker 17: I think we're okay.
42:07
Speaker 3: Well it is radio. Keep that in mind, all right. Jenny,
42:11
Speaker 3: talk about the first time you were on the air
42:13
Speaker 3: with Steve.
42:14
Speaker 6: Oh my gosh.
42:14
Speaker 22: I did not know what to think of him. I
42:15
Speaker 22: mean it was, you know, just a few years out
42:18
Speaker 22: of college.
42:19
Speaker 17: You don't even remember when I do so remember.
42:21
Speaker 22: So we had Randy Dammren on one station and Steve
42:25
Speaker 22: on the other side doing his FM show. I was
42:29
Speaker 22: actually doing news for him when I first started.
42:31
Speaker 3: So kind of worked.
42:32
Speaker 6: We were.
42:33
Speaker 17: We weren't like a team then. That didn't happen till
42:36
Speaker 17: the late nineties.
42:37
Speaker 3: Okayat but those idea wasn't to put you together.
42:40
Speaker 22: Actually, I think Dale Miller, former Presecond Time Company. The
42:45
Speaker 22: second time, he kind of pulled me aside and he's like, Jenny,
42:49
Speaker 22: I need you to work with Steve because I think
42:51
Speaker 22: you're the only one who can handle it.
42:54
Speaker 3: Wow, welcome to your roast, Steve.
42:58
Speaker 11: The rest they say is his.
42:59
Speaker 17: Well, I I didn't well, I remember that, but I
43:02
Speaker 17: was thinking that we worked. We worked at the country
43:04
Speaker 17: station together, which is ninety six point one. I came
43:08
Speaker 17: over and worked at WCHS in the morning for I
43:11
Speaker 17: don't know, a year or so, and then they needed
43:13
Speaker 17: somebody over at ninety six, and so I went over there.
43:16
Speaker 17: I mean, technically I haven't been on V one hundred
43:20
Speaker 17: all forty five years, but I just it's easier to
43:23
Speaker 17: say that because I always had an association with the station.
43:26
Speaker 17: Whether I because I tried twice to go do something else,
43:30
Speaker 17: not because I hated V one hundred because I didn't.
43:32
Speaker 17: I just wanted to try something else, so I did,
43:35
Speaker 17: and then I always ended up back over there.
43:37
Speaker 3: Have you ever had a career other than radium? Have
43:40
Speaker 3: you ever done anything else besides redoll?
43:42
Speaker 17: I was talking about this earlier. I've the time or
43:45
Speaker 17: two I might have had a normal job. It didn't
43:48
Speaker 17: last very long because I could never have a normal,
43:52
Speaker 17: regular job. I just I couldn't.
43:54
Speaker 3: We're not normal people, No, we aren't.
43:58
Speaker 17: And it just didn't seem like that was in the
44:01
Speaker 17: cards for me. It had to be some But I
44:03
Speaker 17: never honestly thought that my radio career would last. It'll
44:08
Speaker 17: be fifty years next year.
44:10
Speaker 3: And you started, as I mean, when you think about
44:13
Speaker 3: when when you started your career, not necessarily here, but
44:16
Speaker 3: when you started your career. The differences between now and then,
44:19
Speaker 3: because again I've not been doing it as long as
44:21
Speaker 3: you have, but I know the differences between when I
44:24
Speaker 3: started thirty seven years ago and what it is now.
44:27
Speaker 3: It's just I mean, there's just computer monitors everywhere, and
44:30
Speaker 3: now that you've added social media to it, it's a
44:32
Speaker 3: big part of it.
44:33
Speaker 17: It's different change, that's for sure. That's for sure. Technology wise,
44:38
Speaker 17: it's gotten easier because I was famous for putting the
44:42
Speaker 17: record on the turntable and having at as wrong speed.
44:46
Speaker 17: That was because once in a while you'd play something
44:48
Speaker 17: off an album and have to set it on thirty
44:50
Speaker 17: three and a third, and then I'd forget to put
44:53
Speaker 17: it back on forty five. I know some of somebody
44:56
Speaker 17: listening is going like, I don't even know what he's.
44:57

Speaker 3: Bobby Sprye joins us right now, and she's dying to

48:16
Speaker 21: Well it's really not that funny, but steveciate it's.
48:19
Speaker 17: Find it hysterical because it just is so true.
48:22
Speaker 3: It is so true.
48:23
Speaker 21: So I started working here at WBrC Media back in
48:27
Speaker 21: twenty sixteen, and I remember standing up at the front
48:30
Speaker 21: desk with my back towards the long hallway, and I'm
48:32
Speaker 21: talking to whoever the receptionists may have been at the time,
48:35
Speaker 21: and I hear Steve Bishop walking up the hall. Now
48:38
Speaker 21: he was complaining about something. I don't remember what it was.
48:41
Speaker 21: I just remember the tone of his voice. And at
48:44
Speaker 21: the time I had not met Steve, but as many
48:48
Speaker 21: of us have grown up listening to Steve and Jenny,
48:51
Speaker 21: in my mind, Steve was iconic, you know, he was
48:54
Speaker 21: a legend. He was somebody famous that I never thought
48:58
Speaker 21: i'd have the opportunity to meet. So I'm looking at
49:02
Speaker 21: the receptionist saying, oh my God, is that Steve Bishop?
49:06
Speaker 19: Is that?
49:07
Speaker 21: Is that him walking behind me?
49:08
Speaker 22: And I was just so enamored.
49:10
Speaker 21: And then the joke is you fast forward three years later,
49:13
Speaker 21: Steve would come down to the office to talk to me,
49:15
Speaker 21: and I'd be like, Oh, hell, Steve, what do you
49:17
Speaker 21: want to.
49:21
Speaker 7: Become?
49:22
Speaker 10: What is it now?
49:23
Speaker 17: Stee It just became one of her coworkers.
49:28
Speaker 3: Growing up, you talked about wanting to do radio. Who
49:30
Speaker 3: are some of the people that you listen to?
49:32
Speaker 19: Me?
49:33
Speaker 18: Yeah?
49:33
Speaker 3: Yeah, that you that there were some of your heroes? Anybody, Well,
49:36
Speaker 3: I mean I would always you can say Fred Persinger
49:40
Speaker 3: if you want.
49:41
Speaker 17: Well, I didn't know Fred till I got here, but
49:44
Speaker 17: Fred's one of my heroes, that's for sure.
49:45
Speaker 3: He's one of mine as well.
49:47
Speaker 17: He's the best. I don't know I was since I
49:51
Speaker 17: was fascinated with radio. I would I had a little
49:53
Speaker 17: transistor radio that I stuck under my pillow at night,
49:56
Speaker 17: and I would tune in w LS in Chicago and
50:00
Speaker 17: and you know, w NBC in New York and w ABC,
50:03
Speaker 17: because these were all fifty thousand watt radio stations that
50:06
Speaker 17: got out over at night all over the country, and
50:10
Speaker 17: I would listen. You know, it's just again, I was
50:13
Speaker 17: just fascinated with the whole the whole radio, how it
50:17
Speaker 17: all worked, and these these guys that I listened to.
50:20
Speaker 17: I don't know, if I don't know if people now
50:22
Speaker 17: that are doing this or even have heroes, or if
50:27
Speaker 17: that's the right term, or well.
50:29
Speaker 3: The business has just changed. You know this too. Business
50:31
Speaker 3: has just changed so much that those iconic figures, even
50:35
Speaker 3: on a local level. I mean, we're pretty damn lucky
50:39
Speaker 3: in this company, you know which. I have you guys,
50:42
Speaker 3: to have Woody Woods' Chris Lawrence's, to have Steve Animal here,
50:46
Speaker 3: to have Rob Real, to have these people, these people
50:49
Speaker 3: here that people actually know in the community, because it's
50:53
Speaker 3: not that way everywhere. No, no, it's not.
50:55
Speaker 17: It's different. It's it's definitely a different ball game now,
50:58
Speaker 17: that's for sure.
50:58
Speaker 3: All Right, So how long are you going to continue this?
51:00
Speaker 3: I keep going, I.
51:01
Speaker 17: Don't know, it's stopping, is in my head. But when
51:07
Speaker 17: I don't know and I don't know, it's so another
51:13
Speaker 17: forty five, I doubt it. I do have a goal
51:16
Speaker 17: of living to be a hundred, but I don't have
51:18
Speaker 17: a goal of working till.
51:20
Speaker 3: I got you. I got you, Genny. Give me one
51:22
Speaker 3: thing about Steve that maybe people don't know.
51:24
Speaker 22: He talks on the radio to thousands of people every day,
51:28
Speaker 22: but he is one of the shyest people.
51:30
Speaker 3: I've ever met. It's not uncommon.
51:32
Speaker 9: Right.
51:33
Speaker 22: We actually went to a company Christmas party and I
51:36
Speaker 22: was sitting with Rick Johnson and his wife and Steve
51:39
Speaker 22: called me on myself and he's like, where are you
51:41
Speaker 22: right now? And I'm like, I'm sitting in here with
51:43
Speaker 22: Rick and his wife. Would you come out to the
51:45
Speaker 22: elevator and get me. He didn't want to walk in.
51:48
Speaker 22: He was so shy even walking into a room with people.
51:51
Speaker 17: He people I work with and know and every day.
51:55
Speaker 17: Just why does it become different when you're off the clock.
51:59
Speaker 17: I don't know. It just was awkward.
52:01
Speaker 3: Well, and we're we're awkward people by nature. But I
52:04
Speaker 3: got this is the best business in the world. Steve,
52:07
