Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host Mark Kenyan. In this episode number two five,
- 0:20Speaker 1: Anton the show, Dan and I are preparing for the
- 0:22Speaker 1: white tail rut, chatting through our rut hunting plans and
- 0:25Speaker 1: sharing our best run hunting advice. Before we get rolling
- 0:47Speaker 1: on all that, though, I want to take a quick
- 0:48Speaker 1: second to thank our partners at Lacrosse Boots, as I've
- 0:52Speaker 1: been mentioning this past a couple of months. Now, I'm
- 0:55Speaker 1: wearing the Lacrosse Alpha Burley Pros this year, and I'm
- 0:58Speaker 1: actually on the road right now to Nebraska for a
- 1:01Speaker 1: white tail hunt. And we're gonna have temperatures all the
- 1:03Speaker 1: way from the thirties up into the sixties. We're gonna
- 1:06Speaker 1: be hiking up and down hills and bluffs, will be
- 1:08Speaker 1: crossing muddy rivers, climbing up into trees, and for all
- 1:12Speaker 1: of those things. At least based on my previous experience
- 1:14Speaker 1: with these boots, I think the Alpha Burleys will be
- 1:16Speaker 1: a great option for each one of those scenarios. So
- 1:19Speaker 1: if you're looking for a versatile white tail knee high
- 1:22Speaker 1: rubber boot. This is definitely one to consider, and if
- 1:25Speaker 1: you want to learn more, you can head on over
- 1:26Speaker 1: to Lacrosse Footwear dot com. All right, welcome to the
- 1:30Speaker 1: Wired to Hunt podcast, brought to you by Onyx, and
- 1:34Speaker 1: today we are kind of doing our pre rut episode
- 1:40Speaker 1: because me and Dan aren't gonna talk again for two weeks,
- 1:44Speaker 1: so the next time that Dan and I are here together,
- 1:46Speaker 1: it's gonna be kind of the heat of the rut.
- 1:48Speaker 1: So I wanted to do an episode where it's just
- 1:50Speaker 1: me and Dan, we kind of feel you guys in
- 1:52Speaker 1: on what we've been up to lately, and then and
- 1:54Speaker 1: then talk through kind of what our game plan is
- 1:57Speaker 1: for the rut, what our tactics are gonna be during
- 1:59Speaker 1: the rut, what maybe our predictions are going to be
- 2:02Speaker 1: for that time frame. So hopefully me and Dan are
- 2:04Speaker 1: prepared for the rut, but then also you guys listening,
- 2:07Speaker 1: hopefully we can get you some info and some ideas
- 2:09Speaker 1: to have you ready for this late October early November
- 2:13Speaker 1: time frame that's coming up, which is you know, as
- 2:15Speaker 1: as you and I both know Dan and probably everyone listening,
- 2:18Speaker 1: we're we're entering kind of the the Holy Land time
- 2:23Speaker 1: of the year as a white tail hunter, like the
- 2:24Speaker 1: super Bowl is right ahead of us, and I'm chomping
- 2:27Speaker 1: at the bit. I'm guessing you are too. Oh yeah, absolutely,
- 2:31Speaker 1: man uh, not a lot needs to be said. Really,
- 2:35Speaker 1: it's it's that time of year and you just start
- 2:38Speaker 1: getting ramped up. Yeah, that's prepare for the grind, you know. Yeah,
- 2:42Speaker 1: the grind is coming up, and I gotta tell you, man, um,
- 2:45Speaker 1: I'm a little bit concerned about the upcoming rout Marathon
- 2:49Speaker 1: the grind because because usually this time frame, right the
- 2:53Speaker 1: first two weeks November, it's like it is a absolute
- 2:57Speaker 1: grind on you mentally and physically. Like usually I'm ran down,
- 3:01Speaker 1: I'm not getting any sleep. Maybe I'll get sick at
- 3:04Speaker 1: the end of it. Usually you just if anything's gonna
- 3:07Speaker 1: go wrong. That's a tiny year when it might go wrong,
- 3:09Speaker 1: just because you're not sleeping much. It run around like crazy.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Do you ever experience something like that? Right, but it's
- 3:16Speaker 1: already carrots, right, and now you feel better? No, No, okay,
- 3:23Speaker 1: hold on before you say anything else. You can't have
- 3:26Speaker 1: me laugh too much. So you have to explain to
- 3:30Speaker 1: people why yeah, and so right now, people can see
- 3:32Speaker 1: my face. I have to do this really weird thing
- 3:34Speaker 1: with my face to keep from smiling because and where
- 3:37Speaker 1: I was actually getting with why I was bringing up
- 3:39Speaker 1: the upcoming grind is because I'm especially concerned about the
- 3:44Speaker 1: upcoming grind because the last two weeks I've already had
- 3:47Speaker 1: all sorts of health issues. I can't imagine what's going
- 3:50Speaker 1: to happen two weeks from now as everything gets worse.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Um So, I haven't talked about this in the podcast yet,
- 3:56Speaker 1: but about two weeks ago, I got diagnosed with shingles.
- 4:00Speaker 1: So I had these horrible, uh I don't know, blistering
- 4:06Speaker 1: welts pop up all around my torso, my front of
- 4:09Speaker 1: my torso, wrapping around to the back of my torso.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Um that were unlike any other kind of rash or
- 4:14Speaker 1: anything I had before. So I was really confused by
- 4:16Speaker 1: what it was. And then when they started getting like painful,
- 4:19Speaker 1: I was waking up in the middle of the night
- 4:20Speaker 1: like with this like searing burning pain. Um that's I
- 4:24Speaker 1: was like, okay, this this needs to get checked out.
- 4:25Speaker 1: So I went to the doctor and yeah, it was shingles.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Told me I'm overstressed or something like that. Um So,
- 4:32Speaker 1: put me on all sorts of meds and like the
- 4:34Speaker 1: super nerve pain deal, because I guess shingles create this
- 4:39Speaker 1: nerve related pain kind of like electric shocks all around you,
- 4:42Speaker 1: which is which is what I was experiencing. Um, So
- 4:45Speaker 1: got on the meds for that and that seemed to help.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Now then last week, I'm recovering from the shingles and
- 4:53Speaker 1: then I get poison ivy pop up all over my face.
- 4:56Speaker 1: So I get poison ivy on my face and then
- 4:58Speaker 1: it moves down into my mouth and it's like it's
- 5:02Speaker 1: it seems like, okay, this is like a this is
- 5:04Speaker 1: a bad case of poison ivy. But I wasn't too
- 5:06Speaker 1: concerned about it until like maybe Thursday night, this past
- 5:09Speaker 1: Thursday night, um, when it started like blistering and oozing,
- 5:14Speaker 1: and then Friday and Saturday, like it was getting worse
- 5:17Speaker 1: and worse to like my face and lips and nose
- 5:20Speaker 1: were covered with like and this is kind of disgusting,
- 5:23Speaker 1: probably too much information for people, um, but like yellow
- 5:29Speaker 1: just cakes of puss on everything all over my face
- 5:32Speaker 1: and my left side of my mouth was like essentially
- 5:35Speaker 1: sealed shut because it all got in poison ivy blistered
- 5:38Speaker 1: and then all these pusses and then it started to
- 5:40Speaker 1: dry and then so all cracked and cut all on
- 5:42Speaker 1: the inside my mouth, so I couldn't open my mouth
- 5:44Speaker 1: to eat food. Um, I can't smile. I can't own
- 5:48Speaker 1: my mouth to to do any of those basic things.
- 5:50Speaker 1: So so whenever you make me laugh or someone doesn't
- 5:54Speaker 1: makes me smile, I have to try like purse my
- 5:56Speaker 1: mouth together to keep it flat so I don't smile
- 5:59Speaker 1: and crack on put my lips. So so then Sunday
- 6:03Speaker 1: I'm like, okay, this is not this is not like
- 6:05Speaker 1: the normal poison ivy. And so I went to the
- 6:07Speaker 1: doctor again, went to urgent care, and they said, oh, yeah,
- 6:10Speaker 1: you know you had poison ivy. But then it got
- 6:13Speaker 1: infected with this like staff infection kind of thing. That
- 6:17Speaker 1: is now what's causing all this crazy stuff showing up
- 6:19Speaker 1: all ever your face. I got blisters on my eyeball
- 6:21Speaker 1: now or my eyelids. Um, So they said there's something
- 6:24Speaker 1: called impatago. So they put me on this pregnancone thing
- 6:28Speaker 1: for the poison ivy. They put me on another thing
- 6:30Speaker 1: for the patago, and they got me on another topical
- 6:33Speaker 1: cream to try and get rid of the lesions. And
- 6:34Speaker 1: all this kind of stuff. Um, so That's where I'm
- 6:38Speaker 1: at right now. Um. The meds that I got on
- 6:41Speaker 1: Sunday have helped substantially, so stuff is definitely coming down. Um.
- 6:46Speaker 1: I was able to go out in public today and
- 6:48Speaker 1: not feel like I looked like a leper um, although
- 6:50Speaker 1: I definitely if you got close enough you'd think that
- 6:52Speaker 1: Britain early, but at least from about forty yards, I
- 6:55Speaker 1: can um talk to you without disgusting. Uh. Um. So yeah,
- 7:01Speaker 1: I'm a little worried if I'm over straighted. My immune
- 7:04Speaker 1: system was so overstressed that I'm breaking out with shingles
- 7:06Speaker 1: and in patago and all this stuff leading up to
- 7:09Speaker 1: the rut. Who knows what's going to happen when I
- 7:11Speaker 1: start living off at three hours of sleep. Yeah? Absolutely, man,
- 7:15Speaker 1: So don't be funny. I won't. I've I've had poison
- 7:19Speaker 1: ivy before, severely. I'm talking like three days in a
- 7:24Speaker 1: row to the emergency room, where I was basically begging
- 7:28Speaker 1: for them to do something to me, like give me
- 7:31Speaker 1: drugs or I mean I had to. I had to
- 7:34Speaker 1: take a warm washcloth to rub on my eyes so
- 7:38Speaker 1: that my eyes would even open on my mouth, um,
- 7:43Speaker 1: on my Yeah, I know where you're going. All the
- 7:48Speaker 1: parts in there. I've I've had it multiple times throughout
- 7:53Speaker 1: my life, and now I just like, if it's summertime
- 7:56Speaker 1: and I need to go in the timber to do something,
- 7:58Speaker 1: I am, I am. I had to tell everything. Oh yeah,
- 8:04Speaker 1: And you know what's funny is I've had the same thing.
- 8:06Speaker 1: I've gotten really bad over the last ten years. I've
- 8:08Speaker 1: had a few outbreaks have been horrible. So now, just
- 8:11Speaker 1: like you, I'm really paranoid about looking for all the time,
- 8:14Speaker 1: never touching it, never setting my stuff in it, and
- 8:16Speaker 1: then anytime I think there's a chance that I might
- 8:18Speaker 1: have still I had a special like tech new poison
- 8:21Speaker 1: ivy wash that I washed down my entire body with
- 8:24Speaker 1: and scrubbed down with. Um Man that that stuff it works,
- 8:30Speaker 1: it works so um But but in this case, I didn't.
- 8:36Speaker 1: I did not realize that I had been in a
- 8:37Speaker 1: situation where I would have got it. I think what
- 8:40Speaker 1: it must have gotten it was that I had met
- 8:41Speaker 1: up with John Eberhardt. Um not last week, but the
- 8:45Speaker 1: friday before that, so about I don't know, twelve days ago,
- 8:47Speaker 1: maybe you're ten days ago, and we just went into
- 8:51Speaker 1: the woods and he wanted to show me how he
- 8:53Speaker 1: preps trees and how he uses the saddle and stuff.
- 8:55Speaker 1: So I actually wasn't really doing anything but filming him
- 8:58Speaker 1: and talking with him. Um. But I must have set
- 9:01Speaker 1: my camera down, or my backpack down or something. I
- 9:03Speaker 1: must have set it down without realizing that I set
- 9:05Speaker 1: it in poison ivy because because I got it good
- 9:08Speaker 1: and then rubbed it all over that pack, all over
- 9:10Speaker 1: your face. Yeah, whatever I did, I rubbed it all
- 9:14Speaker 1: over my face. And I actually did rub it in
- 9:15Speaker 1: the other places that you were afore mentioning, and uh
- 9:19Speaker 1: I had I had a very mild case in those regions. Um,
- 9:22Speaker 1: fortunately did not have the whole the whole craziness happened there. Um.
- 9:28Speaker 1: So yeah, I don't we don't need to talk about
- 9:31Speaker 1: all this too much more. But that has made the
- 9:34Speaker 1: last two weeks of my life a little bit interesting
- 9:37Speaker 1: from that standpoint. I haven't hunted all that much, um
- 9:40Speaker 1: because partly because of that, partly because I kind of,
- 9:44Speaker 1: you know, as we talked about last time, I decided
- 9:46Speaker 1: not to do that boundary waters hunt because I wanted
- 9:48Speaker 1: this kind of early in mid October time period to
- 9:50Speaker 1: be mostly family focused and and I have gotten to
- 9:54Speaker 1: do that, so that's been really nice. Um I needed
- 9:56Speaker 1: that apparently. So yeah, we're asking about sleep, right, Um,
- 10:02Speaker 1: I get more sleep during the grind of the rut,
- 10:06Speaker 1: getting up early, going to bed typically late because you know,
- 10:09Speaker 1: I got the podcast stuff on my end as well that.
- 10:12Speaker 1: But I'm still getting more sleep than if I was
- 10:15Speaker 1: at home with my kids. Yeah, absolutely, I mean I
- 10:19Speaker 1: get like and it's not like when I'm with the kids.
- 10:24Speaker 1: I'm getting up once maybe twice a night still, right,
- 10:27Speaker 1: and I may be getting six hours, but it's interrupted.
- 10:31Speaker 1: But when I go to the you know, on my
- 10:33Speaker 1: rut vacation, I'm getting six hours of sleep, maybe even
- 10:36Speaker 1: five hours of sleep solid right through and after these days,
- 10:41Speaker 1: if I get five hours of sleep, I'm tap dancing,
- 10:44Speaker 1: like I am. I'm a I'm a I'm a happy camper. Yeah, yeah,
- 10:48Speaker 1: I'm lucky. I guess Everett sleeps pretty much right to
- 10:51Speaker 1: the night almost every night now, so I get, you know,
- 10:54Speaker 1: a full night of sleep every night. Um. My ruts
- 10:58Speaker 1: are much worse because I end because I'm because usually
- 11:01Speaker 1: I'm hunting the entire day I get home. You know, well,
- 11:04Speaker 1: I'm waking up usually three in the morning or something,
- 11:06Speaker 1: because I like to get up to the tree stands
- 11:08Speaker 1: super early. Um, some up really crazy early. Then I'm
- 11:12Speaker 1: out there the entire day, and then I get home
- 11:13Speaker 1: you know, at six or seven or eight o'clock at night,
- 11:15Speaker 1: depending on where I'm at, and then I after you know,
- 11:18Speaker 1: then I'm doing all the podcasts and work stuff afterwards.
- 11:21Speaker 1: So I usually end up being up late to like
- 11:22Speaker 1: eleven o'clock or something, and then back again up at three.
- 11:25Speaker 1: So I think I usually average, if I'm thinking back
- 11:27Speaker 1: on most ruts, usually average like four hours a night
- 11:29Speaker 1: during the rut. So that's not either, that's that's brutal. Um.
- 11:35Speaker 1: So the moral of this story is that, um, neither
- 11:38Speaker 1: one of us is gonna well, you're gonna sleep better
- 11:40Speaker 1: than me, but I'm gonna sleep better than other than
- 11:42Speaker 1: the rest of the year. So uh, I haven't we're
- 11:48Speaker 1: gonna talk about now, Yeah, yeah, So I want to
- 11:50Speaker 1: do some quick updates on what's happened so far before
- 11:53Speaker 1: we get into like the rut ideas and tips and
- 11:55Speaker 1: tactics and all that kind of stuff. Um, that was
- 11:58Speaker 1: my big thing as far as hell stuff going on
- 12:00Speaker 1: with me. Um. Two other things worth noting that you
- 12:03Speaker 1: might be of interest to hear about Dan on my side. Okay,
- 12:08Speaker 1: number one, I did do a quick like day and
- 12:10Speaker 1: a half trip up to our northern Michigan deer camp
- 12:13Speaker 1: um last week and we did not see any deer
- 12:17Speaker 1: me and further went up there, didn't see any deer
- 12:20Speaker 1: josh Off you um, no mature bucks on camera, which
- 12:23Speaker 1: is disappointing but not unheard of. Usually the last few years,
- 12:27Speaker 1: the couple the one or two bucks that we do
- 12:29Speaker 1: get tend to be showing up in late October. But
- 12:32Speaker 1: what was cool was that on my first night there,
- 12:36Speaker 1: I had a big old bear come walking right underneath me.
- 12:39Speaker 1: I know, man, Yeah, that's awesome. So let me ask
- 12:42Speaker 1: you this question. When you know a bear, you know,
- 12:46Speaker 1: if it was a if it was a bobcat, right,
- 12:48Speaker 1: I mean that's a predator. But did you and I
- 12:52Speaker 1: know it was a black bear, And if you're educated,
- 12:54Speaker 1: black bears probably aren't you know that scared of humans?
- 12:57Speaker 1: But you you hear stories, right, did you have kind
- 13:01Speaker 1: of a a butt pucker moment where you're just like,
- 13:06Speaker 1: there's a bear, Like, what do I do? You know?
- 13:10Speaker 1: I didn't, And it's not because I'm like trying to
- 13:12Speaker 1: say I'm like some tough dude or anything. I think
- 13:15Speaker 1: it's just because I've spent so much time in grizzly
- 13:18Speaker 1: country now that black bears kind of are at a
- 13:21Speaker 1: different level that that don't worries me as much. Now,
- 13:23Speaker 1: if this bear had walked right to the base of
- 13:25Speaker 1: my tree and like started to climb up it, then
- 13:28Speaker 1: I'd be like, Okay, this could be a little sketch. Um.
- 13:30Speaker 1: But he walked, you know, within five yards of me,
- 13:33Speaker 1: but never looked at me, never knew I was there.
- 13:36Speaker 1: So it was just like a really cool close encounter
- 13:38Speaker 1: in which he had no clue there was anything going on,
- 13:41Speaker 1: and I could just observe his natural behavior. Um. So No,
- 13:44Speaker 1: it was just kind of like the first thing I
- 13:46Speaker 1: thought was, oh, yes, like this is so cool. And
- 13:49Speaker 1: I've been thinking for the last few years, like one
- 13:52Speaker 1: of these days, I'm going to see a bear, like
- 13:54Speaker 1: we keep getting pictures of him. There's always tracks coming
- 13:57Speaker 1: through this area, so I knew eventually had to happen,
- 13:59Speaker 1: but never, you know, over the you know, twenty eight
- 14:02Speaker 1: years or whatever that can remember going up there, have
- 14:05Speaker 1: I've seen one now last year for the first time,
- 14:07Speaker 1: someone in our camp did um. One of the guys
- 14:10Speaker 1: that was up there during gun season saw a sal
- 14:12Speaker 1: in two cubs. So that was the first sighting on
- 14:15Speaker 1: the property last year, and then this year now I
- 14:17Speaker 1: had this one. So that was it was so cool
- 14:19Speaker 1: to see and um, you know, sitting up there in
- 14:23Speaker 1: that spot, I was hunting a location that was about
- 14:27Speaker 1: seven or yor eight yards away from the spot where
- 14:30Speaker 1: I had my first dear related memory of my life.
- 14:34Speaker 1: I was sitting My grandpa had taken me up to
- 14:36Speaker 1: our camp back when I was like maybe four or
- 14:38Speaker 1: five or I don't know, really young, somewhere in that
- 14:40Speaker 1: time period, and he had this old ground blend there.
- 14:43Speaker 1: This used to be a field and he had a
- 14:44Speaker 1: ground blend he built on the edge of it. And
- 14:47Speaker 1: it was the summertime. He brought me out there, and
- 14:49Speaker 1: I just remember sitting the ground blind and having a
- 14:51Speaker 1: whole group of doughs come walking by like five yards away,
- 14:55Speaker 1: five or ten yards away, just so close the closest
- 14:58Speaker 1: um Like, I guess it's the first time I can
- 14:59Speaker 1: really remember seeing deer, and I'm sure it was the
- 15:01Speaker 1: closest I've ever seen deer at that point, and I
- 15:04Speaker 1: can I can still see like the inside of the
- 15:06Speaker 1: blind I can see just I remember the bright orange
- 15:09Speaker 1: of their summer coats. And my grandpa had this big
- 15:11Speaker 1: old cam quarter, so he had filmed it too. And
- 15:15Speaker 1: when I watched that back, I was like whispering, but
- 15:18Speaker 1: like basically whisper yelling, like cheepy. Look he's right there,
- 15:22Speaker 1: right there, and he keeps on saying it's okay, Mark,
- 15:24Speaker 1: whisper whisper um. So that was like such a cool
- 15:28Speaker 1: early moment in my deer and hunting related life. And
- 15:33Speaker 1: then that was always where my grandpa hunted, you know,
- 15:35Speaker 1: for the next ten fifteen years, I was growing older
- 15:37Speaker 1: and going up there more and more. Fast forward like
- 15:40Speaker 1: fifteen years or so. Now I'm up there and he's
- 15:43Speaker 1: hunting that ground line again. But I have a tree
- 15:45Speaker 1: stand down maybe two yards away that I was hunting.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Was Opening day two thousand, I don't know seven or
- 15:53Speaker 1: something like that. Six I'm not somewhere in that time
- 15:55Speaker 1: from like ten twelve years ago or something like that.
- 15:57Speaker 1: And I shoot a buck and it was the first
- 16:00Speaker 1: buck I shot at the camp. We didn't see very
- 16:03Speaker 1: many DearS, as we've talked about the past, so this
- 16:05Speaker 1: is like one of the like one of the only
- 16:06Speaker 1: three bucks I've seen in my entire life up there.
- 16:08Speaker 1: So I shot him, dropped him in his tracks. And
- 16:10Speaker 1: the first thing I did was I walked back out
- 16:12Speaker 1: to the field where my grandpa was and met him there.
- 16:15Speaker 1: And this is ten yards away from where I was
- 16:17Speaker 1: hunting last week when the baron counter happened. And I
- 16:20Speaker 1: remember standing there in my grandpa him was putting his
- 16:23Speaker 1: hand on my shoulder and just just I told him
- 16:25Speaker 1: what happened, like he was just telling me how proud
- 16:27Speaker 1: he was. And you know, he was really big on
- 16:30Speaker 1: a quick, clean kill. It was so important to him
- 16:32Speaker 1: that you were really careful about the shots he took
- 16:34Speaker 1: that you never wanted dear suffer. So it was it
- 16:37Speaker 1: was a rule. You never shot at a moving deer.
- 16:40Speaker 1: You never shot it unless it was a perfect ethical,
- 16:43Speaker 1: no doubt about it, vital shot. Um. So when I
- 16:46Speaker 1: dropped that deer in his tracks and I told him that,
- 16:48Speaker 1: he was just so proud. He kept saying over and
- 16:49Speaker 1: over and over again, and uh, this is a really
- 16:52Speaker 1: cool moment. This this person who had been so influential
- 16:54Speaker 1: in my life. Um, you know, getting to share. The
- 16:56Speaker 1: first person I got to talk to was him right there.
- 16:59Speaker 1: So that ten yards away from where I was sitting
- 17:01Speaker 1: last Monday, Grandpa's ground blind where we sat when I
- 17:04Speaker 1: was three or four, that was about eight yards away.
- 17:07Speaker 1: And I'm standing there or I'm sitting there in my
- 17:09Speaker 1: tree saddle, and that bear comes walking underneath ten yards
- 17:12Speaker 1: away or five yards But all of this happening right
- 17:14Speaker 1: in this little special spot, in this special location. And um.
- 17:19Speaker 1: I told my dad about this after it all happened,
- 17:21Speaker 1: and he asked me, He said, what was the date
- 17:23Speaker 1: that that happened? And I told him was October and uh,
- 17:27Speaker 1: and he tells me, that's that's pretty interesting mark. That's
- 17:30Speaker 1: a that's the six year anniversary of your grandfather's passing.
- 17:36Speaker 1: So I saw this, this bear for the first time
- 17:38Speaker 1: ever sing a bear showed up in this special spot
- 17:41Speaker 1: that I had spared that I had shared this special
- 17:43Speaker 1: mode in my grandpa six years to the day that
- 17:46Speaker 1: he died. Um. So I don't I don't know what
- 17:49Speaker 1: that means or if you want to take anything from that,
- 17:52Speaker 1: but it means your grandpa's spirit animal is a bear.
- 17:56Speaker 1: You know, whatever it means. It was something something powerful
- 17:59Speaker 1: about that moment, especially when I when I realized that
- 18:01Speaker 1: um that that was the day he when I remember,
- 18:04Speaker 1: that was the day that he passed six years ago. Um. Yeah,
- 18:07Speaker 1: so that was a pretty special moment. Um, So I
- 18:10Speaker 1: thought it would be worth sharing that. Um. So that
- 18:14Speaker 1: was Kenn Rovan. That was the Northern Michigan trip um
- 18:19Speaker 1: and the only one thing. I guess it's been going
- 18:21Speaker 1: on since then because I haven't really been honting. I've
- 18:22Speaker 1: just been observing the Holy Field property, sitting on my
- 18:26Speaker 1: little hillside with my spotting scipe, trying to see is
- 18:28Speaker 1: Holy Field alive or is there anything around here I
- 18:30Speaker 1: want to shoot. I did go to a trailcra poll
- 18:34Speaker 1: and what I can tell you is this the last
- 18:37Speaker 1: like seven to ten days, seven to eight days, seven
- 18:40Speaker 1: ten days has been lights out the most daylight buck
- 18:45Speaker 1: activity I've seen this property in most years, um, even
- 18:49Speaker 1: compared to the Rut. Most years, it's been like rut
- 18:53Speaker 1: type daylight activity and a lot of decent bucks, like
- 18:56Speaker 1: more than usual. Um. I want to say decent bucks,
- 19:00Speaker 1: I mean like two and three year old bucks here
- 19:02Speaker 1: in Michigan. Like that's that's a pretty good buck around here.
- 19:05Speaker 1: Tons of daylight activity on the cameras I checked and
- 19:08Speaker 1: from my observation post. I've seen a lot of daylight bucks,
- 19:12Speaker 1: including survivor. Who's this buck who? Last year I was
- 19:15Speaker 1: passing on I thought he was a three year old.
- 19:17Speaker 1: Last year, I was thinking he was a four year old.
- 19:19Speaker 1: This year. Um. I just looked back on my notes,
- 19:22Speaker 1: and I saw him the evening of the fourteenth, the
- 19:24Speaker 1: evening of the morning of. My wife saw him the
- 19:30Speaker 1: evening of the and I saw him today the morning of,
- 19:34Speaker 1: all in daylight, all in the same general spot. So
- 19:38Speaker 1: he's being like holy Field was back in sixteen, from
- 19:40Speaker 1: the same place, moving like crazy during daylight. Um. But
- 19:46Speaker 1: that survivor, no holy Field, still not seeing holy Field.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Still don't have confirmed pictures of holy Field. There's one
- 19:52Speaker 1: deer I got in camera. It's like a blurry shot.
- 19:55Speaker 1: It kind of looks like the frame matches up but smaller,
- 19:59Speaker 1: kind of looks like he's got that chip in his ear.
- 20:01Speaker 1: But it's blurry. So I can't say a percent certain. Um.
- 20:05Speaker 1: So I don't know what to think about the situation,
- 20:07Speaker 1: because there's maybe holy Field still out there, but still
- 20:10Speaker 1: no confirmation survivors moving like crazy and daylight um. And
- 20:14Speaker 1: then another buck that's kind of like sort of like
- 20:18Speaker 1: what holy Field looked like from a nailer standpoint last year,
- 20:20Speaker 1: like a really nice, big, clean a pointer. Um, but
- 20:23Speaker 1: he looks like he's a three year old. He's been
- 20:24Speaker 1: moving in daylight too. Um, so that's what's going on,
- 20:29Speaker 1: No holy Field. A couple of these younger bucks moving
- 20:31Speaker 1: a bunch, which is exciting to see, but you know,
- 20:34Speaker 1: I'm not really interested in targeting them, especially now I've
- 20:37Speaker 1: after seen Survivor again this morning and yesterday morning. Um,
- 20:43Speaker 1: I'm starting to doubt if he is four or not.
- 20:45Speaker 1: He does not look as big bodied as I thought
- 20:47Speaker 1: he should if he looked for sure three and a
- 20:48Speaker 1: half last year, but now he looks three and a
- 20:50Speaker 1: half again this year. So now I'm wondering how maybe
- 20:53Speaker 1: it was a two and a half last year, just
- 20:55Speaker 1: like a really big two an a half year old,
- 20:56Speaker 1: and now this year he's an average three year old.
- 20:59Speaker 1: I don't know what to think, um, but I'm not
- 21:01Speaker 1: gonna push it when I'm still kind of holding on
- 21:04Speaker 1: for holy Field. So I went out actually last night
- 21:07Speaker 1: and hunted earlier than I was planning on, just because
- 21:10Speaker 1: of all this daylight activity I've been seeing. I thought, well,
- 21:12Speaker 1: why not try once. I'm sick of sitting on the sidelines. Um,
- 21:16Speaker 1: so tried one safe set. Didn't see any of these
- 21:18Speaker 1: deer um. So that was kind of That was kind
- 21:21Speaker 1: of the extent of it. And I'll tell you what
- 21:25Speaker 1: your trail cameras are telling you a lot more than
- 21:27Speaker 1: what mine are telling me. Um what happened? Man, dude,
- 21:31Speaker 1: I don't know, Like it's almost like have you ever
- 21:34Speaker 1: had like a moment throughout your hunting career where you
- 21:37Speaker 1: go into a property and you're just like, where's the sign?
- 21:41Speaker 1: What's going on here? And obviously this year there's way
- 21:46Speaker 1: more coyotes on trail camera, um than there has been
- 21:49Speaker 1: in the past. One of the ladies the farmers horses
- 21:52Speaker 1: died and she didn't do anything with it. She's just
- 21:55Speaker 1: gonna let it sit there and basically melt into the earth.
- 21:58Speaker 1: But uh, coyotes got brought in by that and they've
- 22:04Speaker 1: been eating that horse for like a week now. There's
- 22:07Speaker 1: there's I got trail cameras all over the farm with coyotes,
- 22:10Speaker 1: and but I've had them in the past and it
- 22:12Speaker 1: doesn't seem to affect the deer herd that much. But
- 22:16Speaker 1: we've had a combination of like almost like extremes. This year,
- 22:21Speaker 1: we had extreme drought in that part of the state,
- 22:25Speaker 1: we've had extreme water, and now recently over the past
- 22:28Speaker 1: week and a half, two weeks that waters resided. The
- 22:32Speaker 1: bottom is still muddy. And so I hunted Saturday night
- 22:35Speaker 1: at my main farm. I went into one of my
- 22:39Speaker 1: best stands because I had the fort like a really
- 22:42Speaker 1: good north uh northwest wind, and so I go in
- 22:46Speaker 1: and I'm I see two doughs. That's it. No sign.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Typically that area is just shredded, the walk in, no scrapes.
- 22:56Speaker 1: So Sunday morning, I didn't even hunt. I got up
- 22:59Speaker 1: early and I went and checked all the trail cameras
- 23:02Speaker 1: and or a majority of them, and I put up
- 23:05Speaker 1: a couple more. And as I'm walking this like this
- 23:11Speaker 1: collective acres right and it's not all in one area,
- 23:16Speaker 1: but it's just and I'm not I'm not jumping into
- 23:19Speaker 1: betting areas. I'm you know, I'm doing it fairly un invasive.
- 23:24Speaker 1: And I think I counted three scrapes on that entire area,
- 23:30Speaker 1: and maybe two or three like like significant rubs in
- 23:35Speaker 1: that entire area. My trail cameras are showing the does
- 23:39Speaker 1: are there. My trail cameras are showing that there is
- 23:43Speaker 1: um two and three year olds there, but one within
- 23:48Speaker 1: the last week, there's been one mature buck on the
- 23:52Speaker 1: on that entire acreage and it's been I don't know,
- 23:57Speaker 1: it's it's it's just a little concerning. I'm like, what
- 23:59Speaker 1: is going and on? The crops are still in as
- 24:02Speaker 1: far as the beans, I would say fifty in the area.
- 24:06Speaker 1: The crops are still in. UM And I don't even
- 24:09Speaker 1: know what to think anymore, just because you know, I
- 24:12Speaker 1: don't know if maybe I'm relying too much on my
- 24:14Speaker 1: trail camera data UM and there is you know, obviously,
- 24:18Speaker 1: as we all know, deer can walk around trail cameras.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Doesn't mean they're not there, But the lack of sign
- 24:24Speaker 1: is something that just concerns me. Could it be anything
- 24:27Speaker 1: related to your cameras being set later than usual? If
- 24:32Speaker 1: I remember right, like, you had to put your cameras
- 24:34Speaker 1: into these fall locations later. So maybe just the fact
- 24:37Speaker 1: that you were in there messing around more recently. Could
- 24:39Speaker 1: that have anything to do with it? You know what,
- 24:41Speaker 1: I would say, potentially, But here's the issue with that,
- 24:46Speaker 1: not like no other deer are affected by it, you know,
- 24:52Speaker 1: I would hate to go into a I mean, if
- 24:54Speaker 1: I was to bump a deer on that farm, Let's
- 24:56Speaker 1: say it's a mature buck and he was maybe getting
- 24:58Speaker 1: close to daylight in the pasted, he would still show up.
- 25:01Speaker 1: It just would be maybe nocturnal, you know what I mean.
- 25:04Speaker 1: It's not like they just completely disappear. But the September
- 25:08Speaker 1: shift for me was huge this year. I mean, it
- 25:12Speaker 1: was like mid September as they all started turning hard
- 25:15Speaker 1: horn shift like just it was just like the trail
- 25:19Speaker 1: cameras shut off. Typically that's a drizzle out right, and
- 25:24Speaker 1: then there's a shift of new bucks back into the area.
- 25:27Speaker 1: But it's like the new bucks didn't come back into
- 25:29Speaker 1: the area this year. And I don't know if it
- 25:32Speaker 1: if it's because of maybe some trespassing issues on part
- 25:36Speaker 1: of the farm, the crops still being in, the huge
- 25:39Speaker 1: acorn harvest, the high water down from the river bottoms.
- 25:44Speaker 1: I mean, these are just ideas. I and my trail
- 25:48Speaker 1: camera tells me that deer are still there, it's just
- 25:51Speaker 1: not there. The mature bucks are gone. Does this is now?
- 25:58Speaker 1: Of course, it is like disconcerting. It's not what you
- 26:00Speaker 1: want to see. But do you have like serious concerns
- 26:04Speaker 1: about the rut or do you or do you feel that, yeah,
- 26:08Speaker 1: maybe they're not a camera yet, but being where you're at,
- 26:12Speaker 1: you never once sat out there during the rut, and
- 26:14Speaker 1: not like they're gonna cruise the runt that even if
- 26:16Speaker 1: they're not living in your farm now that they're gonna
- 26:18Speaker 1: be there come November, don't I don't. Don't get me wrong,
- 26:22Speaker 1: I've had some slow ruts, but I've always seen a
- 26:24Speaker 1: mature buck on from the tree stand or have had
- 26:28Speaker 1: an encounter with a mature buck on that farm. There's
- 26:31Speaker 1: just some years where it's better than others. But what
- 26:33Speaker 1: I will tell you is that every single year, somewhere
- 26:37Speaker 1: around October is when the sign just blows up on
- 26:41Speaker 1: the farm. And this is the first year and seven
- 26:43Speaker 1: years that I have not seen that interesting even with
- 26:47Speaker 1: high water in the past. I mean I remember hunting
- 26:51Speaker 1: some uh the bottoms being covered so much in the
- 26:55Speaker 1: fall that they left the crops in because they couldn't
- 26:59Speaker 1: get them out the entire until the freeze came and
- 27:02Speaker 1: the water resided. But it was the crops were mold,
- 27:07Speaker 1: so the deer couldn't eat them. They were all ruined,
- 27:10Speaker 1: so basically they just like ran them over and then
- 27:13Speaker 1: plowed them back into the ground. But it's it's just weird,
- 27:17Speaker 1: like all the sign that typically blows up this time
- 27:21Speaker 1: of year is not there right now. Yeah, that's that's
- 27:25Speaker 1: definitely weird. So let's talk about the plan moving forward.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Then let's talk about what we're gonna do, and then
- 27:31Speaker 1: some of like our rut principles um that we're gonna
- 27:34Speaker 1: be keeping in mind, and then maybe other folks should too.
- 27:36Speaker 1: So given this, given your unique situation this year, talk
- 27:40Speaker 1: to me about is this changing your plans at all
- 27:42Speaker 1: for the rot vacation coming up? And when's that all?
- 27:44Speaker 1: When's that all happening? Right? So this I'm not sure
- 27:47Speaker 1: when this particular podcast is going to post this Thursday.
- 27:50Speaker 1: So okay, So so Friday night, Saturday morning, Saturday night,
- 27:59Speaker 1: in Sunday morning, I will be hunting on the main farm. Right.
- 28:05Speaker 1: The first thing I'm gonna do on Friday night is
- 28:07Speaker 1: I got a very rare wind kind of out of
- 28:10Speaker 1: the east that I'm going to go in and do
- 28:11Speaker 1: a running gun on um the back side of that
- 28:15Speaker 1: Gnarlie Charlie um supposed betting area, just because I got
- 28:20Speaker 1: a rare wind that's gonna allow me some really awesome access.
- 28:24Speaker 1: The water is low enough for me to walk through
- 28:27Speaker 1: the creek, and then from there Saturday, I'll probably hunt
- 28:31Speaker 1: that same set Saturday morning because i'll have another good
- 28:34Speaker 1: wind after that. Then after I get out of the stand,
- 28:38Speaker 1: it's gonna be go around and check all the trail
- 28:40Speaker 1: cameras again and just see, just see what what there is.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Hopefully what I'm seeing is an uptick in mature buck activity.
- 28:50Speaker 1: Hopefully while I'm checking them, I see a lot more sign.
- 28:53Speaker 1: But you know, then then that makes everything easier if
- 28:58Speaker 1: it kind of just bounces back and the sign was late.
- 29:01Speaker 1: I had a really good conversation with a guy the
- 29:03Speaker 1: other day and he was talking about having similar years
- 29:08Speaker 1: and a lot of it, and you were you were
- 29:10Speaker 1: saying something about on your Michigan property you were having
- 29:13Speaker 1: rut like trail camera pictures right right. Well, we've discussed
- 29:19Speaker 1: on this podcast before that bell curve of breeding, and
- 29:22Speaker 1: there's a potential that maybe on your farm you you
- 29:27Speaker 1: have one of those first does to come into heat.
- 29:29Speaker 1: And that's why some of these deer on their feet
- 29:32Speaker 1: moving because there's one dough who's starting to come into
- 29:35Speaker 1: heat and she's seeing a lot. You know that that starts,
- 29:40Speaker 1: that starts something right, that gets all the all the
- 29:42Speaker 1: bucks on their feet. There's that sweet smell in the
- 29:45Speaker 1: timber and they start cruising a little bit. And then
- 29:48Speaker 1: for my property, you know, typically there's some action the
- 29:54Speaker 1: there's a couple of dos that may go into heat
- 29:56Speaker 1: the first week in November, but like that seven nine
- 30:00Speaker 1: time frame is when it starts really getting really good
- 30:03Speaker 1: on my farm. So maybe what we're getting at this
- 30:05Speaker 1: year on my farm is that there's nothing worth getting
- 30:08Speaker 1: interested about quite yet and it's just delayed because the
- 30:13Speaker 1: does are are not on schedule from previous years. Yeah,
- 30:18Speaker 1: and you know, also I gotta imagine on a farmer's
- 30:21Speaker 1: and now you haven't had this issue in the past,
- 30:23Speaker 1: but with that much ground, I mean, it's it's there's
- 30:27Speaker 1: a lot of ground to try to understand what's happening. Right,
- 30:29Speaker 1: So there might be a crap ton of action going
- 30:31Speaker 1: on in a corner that you just typically aren't at
- 30:34Speaker 1: or where your cameras aren't at right now, I mean,
- 30:36Speaker 1: what's the acorn crop? Like could that could a lot
- 30:38Speaker 1: of these bucks just be focused staining in the timber
- 30:40Speaker 1: right now and hammer and acorns or something like that. Yeah,
- 30:43Speaker 1: and and that's a good point. However, in previous years,
- 30:48Speaker 1: I'm gonna say two thousand and I don't know if
- 30:50Speaker 1: it was two thousand and fifteen or sixteen, I can't remember,
- 30:53Speaker 1: or fourteen. One of those years was another huge acorn crop,
- 30:57Speaker 1: but the sign was still there. And when you have
- 31:01Speaker 1: a big acorn crop, all my trail camera pictures in
- 31:05Speaker 1: the timber were blowing up right, they would make it
- 31:08Speaker 1: to the field edge, but not not during daylight. It
- 31:12Speaker 1: would be like the middle of the night. But my
- 31:14Speaker 1: pinch points, my travel corridors, my staging area, trail cameras
- 31:19Speaker 1: were all active. Yeah. Um. Back to your earlier point
- 31:25Speaker 1: about the bell curve related to you know, breeding, sometimes
- 31:28Speaker 1: there's gonna be some that pop early. Um, and what's
- 31:31Speaker 1: going on on the Holy Field property. I my, it's
- 31:35Speaker 1: definitely possible. It's something that that could have happened here.
- 31:39Speaker 1: My guess is that it's not the case in this
- 31:41Speaker 1: specific instance because this huge bumping activity that I've seen
- 31:45Speaker 1: here I think is directly correlated to this cold front
- 31:48Speaker 1: that we've had. This cold spell that we've had here,
- 31:51Speaker 1: we've had significantly lower than average temperature since oh, I
- 31:55Speaker 1: don't know what the date was, like, um through you know,
- 31:59Speaker 1: a day ago, it's been way colder than usual. So
- 32:03Speaker 1: my guess is that that is part of the reason
- 32:05Speaker 1: why so much was going on. I don't know about you,
- 32:08Speaker 1: but if you look at just the the internet or
- 32:10Speaker 1: like the kind of hunting community out there and the
- 32:13Speaker 1: bucks that have been getting killed over the last like
- 32:14Speaker 1: seven a ten days, this is the best mid October success, right.
- 32:20Speaker 1: I think that I can see anecdote. I can't quantify it,
- 32:22Speaker 1: but just based off of like stories and pictures and stuff,
- 32:25Speaker 1: I can't remember better mid October than this one. Would
- 32:28Speaker 1: you have you seen the same thing? I had a
- 32:31Speaker 1: conversation with the guy about this the other day, and yes,
- 32:36Speaker 1: I would say by selection, right, we obviously follow more hunters,
- 32:41Speaker 1: we follow more uh social media accounts that have to
- 32:45Speaker 1: do with hunting. But here's what I want to know
- 32:48Speaker 1: is where were these deer killed? Were these killed over
- 32:51Speaker 1: food plots, were they killed in the timber? Where they
- 32:55Speaker 1: killed on private farms? Like? Does does that direct success,
- 33:03Speaker 1: like I guess, relate to the rest of the hunting community,
- 33:08Speaker 1: or is that we are only seeing a certain portion
- 33:12Speaker 1: of what is actually being harvested and the hunter success
- 33:16Speaker 1: because these guys are have the ability to hunt more
- 33:20Speaker 1: because they may be quote unquote in the industry, or
- 33:23Speaker 1: they have you know, private property with you know, highly
- 33:27Speaker 1: managed food plots, and that's the success that we're seeing.
- 33:30Speaker 1: Does that make sense? I don't know the point you're
- 33:32Speaker 1: getting it though, are you are you? Are you saying
- 33:35Speaker 1: that you think that it has been that it hasn't
- 33:39Speaker 1: been a better mid October? I'm not saying just like
- 33:42Speaker 1: you said, we can't really quantify that because I'll tell
- 33:45Speaker 1: you from my experience, even though it's been colder than
- 33:49Speaker 1: average temperatures, I have not seen an increase in dear
- 33:52Speaker 1: movement because of this cold spell. You personally like your
- 33:56Speaker 1: own set and stuff exactly. Yes, yeah, well I from
- 34:01Speaker 1: based off what Instagram and social media is telling us, Yeah,
- 34:05Speaker 1: I feel it's more people are posting pictures of their
- 34:08Speaker 1: of their success, their bigger deer. But I'm curious to
- 34:12Speaker 1: know if you were to have a secondary statistic behind it.
- 34:16Speaker 1: Are these bucks being harvested on private ground that have
- 34:20Speaker 1: access to uh, you know, managed food plots. Are they
- 34:24Speaker 1: managed for big deer who? Like? What's that secondary statistic?
- 34:28Speaker 1: Because I don't get too excited about, you know, a
- 34:32Speaker 1: whole bunch of people posting pictures because there's you know,
- 34:35Speaker 1: there's millions of hunters out there right now. And I see,
- 34:39Speaker 1: even if you see three hundred success successful pictures a day,
- 34:45Speaker 1: that's still a very small percentage of what is actually
- 34:48Speaker 1: out there, you know what I mean? Yeah, yeah, um yeah,
- 34:54Speaker 1: um yeah, Okay, dumbass, I'm just trying to figure out. So,
- 35:03Speaker 1: so are you insinuating that you think that the higher
- 35:07Speaker 1: rate of success has only been happening for people that
- 35:09Speaker 1: have managed properties, whereas that like what you're theorizing or wondering. Um,
- 35:14Speaker 1: I'm theorizing now. I've seen I've seen some people, you know,
- 35:19Speaker 1: I've seen some uh, I know, some people who have
- 35:21Speaker 1: harvested some deer in public lane already. That's great, But
- 35:24Speaker 1: I feel like a majority of these big deer that
- 35:28Speaker 1: are being harvested are on private farms with food plots.
- 35:32Speaker 1: Interesting observation. I can't argue it, although I've I've certainly seen,
- 35:37Speaker 1: I guess from my I have I have, you know,
- 35:42Speaker 1: I can look at Instagram picture. All I know is
- 35:44Speaker 1: is a guy if you shot a buck with a
- 35:46Speaker 1: muzzleloader or a or a bow. I don't know anything
- 35:50Speaker 1: else about the picture, right, So that's just a random thought. Yeah,
- 35:54Speaker 1: Well it's an interesting observation. And I can tell you
- 35:56Speaker 1: either way, wherever these people are are killing the deer,
- 35:59Speaker 1: people have been killing a lot of dear. Um, it's
- 36:01Speaker 1: been a pretty good October so far in my hope.
- 36:05Speaker 1: Or what I wonder though, is how is this going
- 36:07Speaker 1: to impact the rest of the month in November? Um?
- 36:11Speaker 1: Are we gonna have Is that going to keep on rolling? Like,
- 36:13Speaker 1: are we gonna have a great late October right into
- 36:16Speaker 1: the early November time period? Or things going to slow
- 36:18Speaker 1: down again? Um? And where I was kind of getting
- 36:21Speaker 1: at with all this was that And I'm not saying
- 36:25Speaker 1: I believe this. Um, I generally do not believe in this.
- 36:29Speaker 1: But there are these moon related rut predictions, um that
- 36:34Speaker 1: this year calls for an earlier running peak than usual,
- 36:40Speaker 1: at least as far as activity. So if you look
- 36:43Speaker 1: at them, the Charles Elsheimer, the late Charles Elsheimer and
- 36:48Speaker 1: Wayne Laroche predictions, Um, they follow this this uh what
- 36:53Speaker 1: is it the second full moon after the autumn equinox
- 36:55Speaker 1: or something like that they called the running moon. Typically
- 36:58Speaker 1: they claim that's what kind of starts to cue some
- 37:00Speaker 1: of this more intense writting activity. Um, if you follow
- 37:05Speaker 1: those predictions, October is the rutting moon, So they were
- 37:09Speaker 1: calling for things to start ramping up towards they and
- 37:13Speaker 1: then like seeking and chasing kind of starting around and
- 37:17Speaker 1: and going through the seven. So basically they're calling for
- 37:21Speaker 1: the best writting activity this year to be, you know,
- 37:24Speaker 1: that the last week and a half of October into
- 37:27Speaker 1: the first couple of days in November, and then you
- 37:29Speaker 1: get into that lockdown sooner. While traditionally most of us
- 37:33Speaker 1: would say that usually we're seeing things a little bit
- 37:36Speaker 1: later than that, that first two weeks of November traditionally
- 37:38Speaker 1: being the peak of activity. Um, So, I don't know,
- 37:43Speaker 1: I mean, it was kind of just interesting to me
- 37:44Speaker 1: that they're calling for a little bit earlier, at least
- 37:47Speaker 1: this one theory calling for a little bit earlier rutting
- 37:50Speaker 1: action and not saying we're seeing rutting action yet, but
- 37:53Speaker 1: we are seeing at least anecdotally a lot of activity
- 37:57Speaker 1: the last you know, seven days or so leading up
- 37:59Speaker 1: to this time and period. I'm not making any kind
- 38:02Speaker 1: of connections to that, and just that was an interesting
- 38:04Speaker 1: thing I've been seeing. UM also Mark drewy Um and
- 38:08Speaker 1: the Drew is another couple of folks who pay attention
- 38:10Speaker 1: to a lot of these things. They always point to
- 38:12Speaker 1: the days around the full moon in general being particularly
- 38:16Speaker 1: good days, and especially if that sinks up with the
- 38:19Speaker 1: general rut time period. UM. Mark always talks about the
- 38:23Speaker 1: three evenings leading up to the full moon and the
- 38:25Speaker 1: three mornings after the full moon traditionally can be a
- 38:28Speaker 1: little bit better. UM. So that full moon is, like
- 38:32Speaker 1: I said, which will be, you know, the day before
- 38:34Speaker 1: this podcast comes out. So if you're listening to this on,
- 38:38Speaker 1: I'd be curious, did you have a couple of good
- 38:40Speaker 1: nights up to this and could the next few mornings
- 38:42Speaker 1: be especially good? I don't know. Um, I think all
- 38:45Speaker 1: this moon stuff is probably overhyped. Um. I'm always more
- 38:49Speaker 1: interested in the date of the calendar and the temperatures. UM,
- 38:53Speaker 1: but it is. It is always interesting. Just I like
- 38:55Speaker 1: to keep tabs on it and just kind of watch
- 38:57Speaker 1: what's going on. And UM, I hope though, I hope
- 39:01Speaker 1: that the rut moon thing is right this year because
- 39:04Speaker 1: I'm actually doing my one or my my one like
- 39:08Speaker 1: late October, well not even my one, rut ish out
- 39:13Speaker 1: of state trip is coming up during this time period.
- 39:15Speaker 1: I'm leaving for Nebraska tomorrow, UM to hunt these last
- 39:20Speaker 1: like four or five days of October. So I'm hoping
- 39:24Speaker 1: that there's gonna be some running, some early writting activity
- 39:26Speaker 1: because I had worked out really nice. Um, I'm not
- 39:28Speaker 1: really expecting it, but I would not complain at all. Um,
- 39:32Speaker 1: Me and Andy, Me and Andy Mayor heading to uh
- 39:35Speaker 1: central Nebraska tomorrow for a really quick hunt. We're gonna
- 39:39Speaker 1: leave in the afternoon, drive all night, hopefully get there
- 39:43Speaker 1: by the morning. So the morning of this podcast goes
- 39:46Speaker 1: out Thursday morning. Hopefully we'll be arriving by then so
- 39:48Speaker 1: we have time to glass in the morning, do a
- 39:51Speaker 1: little scouting midday, get spots set up to hunt that evening,
- 39:55Speaker 1: and then when we all hunt Thursday night, Friday, Saturday,
- 39:58Speaker 1: Sunday and Monday more earning and then if turnound and
- 40:01Speaker 1: drive right back home. Um, it's gonna be a quick trip.
- 40:05Speaker 1: But um, but I'm kind of excited about it. We
- 40:08Speaker 1: got um, we got access to us sweet looking the
- 40:11Speaker 1: river bottom property that Andy got us permission through kind
- 40:15Speaker 1: of a blind phone call just by chance. And um,
- 40:19Speaker 1: it's like eight miles of river bottom with lots of
- 40:22Speaker 1: good cover. Some irrigated fields could be pretty sweet. Um.
- 40:27Speaker 1: So we'll have some stories to come on that next week.
- 40:30Speaker 1: But that's what I have come in my immediate future, Dan. Um.
- 40:33Speaker 1: So when you're out there trying to figure things in
- 40:35Speaker 1: the uh in the Iowa holy land that has gone quiet,
- 40:39Speaker 1: I'll be trying to figure out a brand new property
- 40:41Speaker 1: that me neither me or and he's ever seen before
- 40:43Speaker 1: in person. Um. So we're just looking at maps and
- 40:47Speaker 1: taking some of our previous knowledge from hunting kind of
- 40:49Speaker 1: similar situations like this out west. You know, there's kind
- 40:51Speaker 1: of hills on the outside and these river bottoms with
- 40:54Speaker 1: a bunch of cover that the white tails are in. Um.
- 40:57Speaker 1: But it's gonna be very much kind of learned as
- 40:59Speaker 1: we go, right right, Well, I'll tell you what. And
- 41:02Speaker 1: that's one thing, you know, backstepping just a little bit
- 41:05Speaker 1: to this, to these averages. Everybody looks at right, everybody
- 41:10Speaker 1: wants an exact date that they want to take off vacation. Well,
- 41:14Speaker 1: that's the law of averages, right that q d m
- 41:18Speaker 1: A puts out all that data about you know, here's
- 41:20Speaker 1: peak breeding, here's peak scrapes, here's peak rubs and all
- 41:24Speaker 1: this data, right, but that doesn't directly relate on the
- 41:29Speaker 1: micro level to your specific farm. Right. So if you
- 41:34Speaker 1: don't run trail cameras, if you don't scout, you don't
- 41:37Speaker 1: go out looking for sign beforehand, yeah, you're probably better
- 41:40Speaker 1: off doing the law of averages and hunting let's say
- 41:44Speaker 1: somewhere around you know, leading up to peak breeding. But
- 41:49Speaker 1: that doesn't mean that the does on your property are
- 41:52Speaker 1: part of that peak, Right. They could be before and
- 41:56Speaker 1: they could be after that, and you could miss it,
- 42:00Speaker 1: you could nail it, you know what I mean. There's
- 42:02Speaker 1: so much variability. I mean, both of us. If you
- 42:05Speaker 1: go back and look at our the last five years
- 42:07Speaker 1: or whatever that we've been doing this podcast, and you
- 42:10Speaker 1: listen to our different rut experiences, you know, every single year,
- 42:14Speaker 1: they're different every single time of year when it hits
- 42:16Speaker 1: as different. I mean, the rut on any given ear
- 42:19Speaker 1: from my experience, is in a little it's can fits
- 42:22Speaker 1: and bursts. There'll be a pop of great activity and
- 42:24Speaker 1: then it'll die down, and then all of a sudden
- 42:26Speaker 1: there's some great activity and then it dies down. And
- 42:28Speaker 1: you can never, at least not frequently predict exactly when
- 42:32Speaker 1: that's going to happen or exactly where that's going to happen. Um,
- 42:36Speaker 1: so much variability, and you could be I could be
- 42:37Speaker 1: at one side of the property and you could be
- 42:39Speaker 1: on the other side of the property, and we might
- 42:40Speaker 1: have a completely different perspective on like how the ruts coming.
- 42:44Speaker 1: You might say, oh, there's nothing going on. The ruts
- 42:45Speaker 1: gonna be late this year, and I might say, no,
- 42:47Speaker 1: it's been intent, it's been insane, it's happening right now,
- 42:50Speaker 1: And that could be a quarter mile difference, you know,
- 42:53Speaker 1: absolute um. And here's one thing though we all need
- 42:57Speaker 1: to remember, all right, we should remember. But it's since
- 43:03Speaker 1: I've changed my hunting style, I've seen less, dear and
- 43:07Speaker 1: what I would call less of an observed rut. And
- 43:10Speaker 1: the reason being is because I'm not hunting in places
- 43:14Speaker 1: where I can see along ways. So if you're a
- 43:16Speaker 1: field edge hunter or you're hunting over big food plots,
- 43:19Speaker 1: then you might walk away going, oh man, they were
- 43:22Speaker 1: chasing tonight. But if you're a pinch point hunter, and
- 43:26Speaker 1: I'm just saying, if that pinch point you can't see
- 43:28Speaker 1: where you're hunting in a thick betting area downwind of
- 43:31Speaker 1: a thick betting area and you can't see a long ways,
- 43:34Speaker 1: you're probably gonna see less of an observed h rut.
- 43:39Speaker 1: But like for me, I'm not interested in seeing chasing
- 43:44Speaker 1: unless it's coming right by my stand. I want to
- 43:47Speaker 1: be in the right spot and get the right deer
- 43:50Speaker 1: to walk by, not see, you know, dear chasing. Um,
- 43:54Speaker 1: you know in this corn field a long ways away,
- 43:57Speaker 1: because if I do see that, I'm getting down. I'm
- 44:00Speaker 1: gonna move my tree stand over there. Yeah, I hear you.
- 44:05Speaker 1: Before we go any further though, let's take a quick
- 44:07Speaker 1: break to thank our friends over at White Tailed Properties
- 44:11Speaker 1: and Spencer new Hearth will take it from here. This week.
- 44:14Speaker 1: With White Tailed Properties, we are joined by Ben Harsheine,
- 44:17Speaker 1: a land specialist out of Iowa, and Ben is going
- 44:20Speaker 1: to be talking to us about strategies for killing a
- 44:22Speaker 1: mid october buck. I think there's a number of things.
- 44:26Speaker 1: One that you don't have any control over is the weather,
- 44:29Speaker 1: but you do have control of when you hunt it.
- 44:32Speaker 1: Following these cold weather fronts. Uh certainly get big deer
- 44:37Speaker 1: on their feet earlier. Um. I think that you have
- 44:39Speaker 1: the key in on food sources still, so if you
- 44:42Speaker 1: can plan ahead and get some food sources on your
- 44:46Speaker 1: property that you're hunting ahead of time to anticipate um
- 44:51Speaker 1: movement here in October. I mean, these deer right now
- 44:54Speaker 1: are eating as much as they can to get ramped
- 44:57Speaker 1: up for the rut, to get ramped up for the winter. UM.
- 45:00Speaker 1: The cold weather gets them on their feet earlier, they're
- 45:02Speaker 1: gonna be on their feet heading to food sources, whether
- 45:05Speaker 1: that's a food plot you planted, acorns, crop fields. Killing
- 45:10Speaker 1: mature buck in October is going to rely on on
- 45:12Speaker 1: chasing that weather and then get in front of them
- 45:14Speaker 1: in the evening hunts going to food. Uh, sometimes you
- 45:18Speaker 1: can get into deeper cover. I think it's a little
- 45:21Speaker 1: bit dangerous, but I still would would go for it
- 45:23Speaker 1: if if you feel comfortable, scout, use your cameras, try
- 45:26Speaker 1: to find where they're staying, and then get deeper into uh,
- 45:29Speaker 1: into that cover where you think maybe he's betten. If
- 45:32Speaker 1: you'd like to learn more and to see the properties
- 45:34Speaker 1: that Ben currently has listed for sale, visit whitetail properties
- 45:38Speaker 1: dot com. Backslash hardshine that's h A R S H
- 45:42Speaker 1: y n E. Let's take that step further. Let's uh,
- 45:47Speaker 1: that's a good kind of rut thought. Let's do like
- 45:50Speaker 1: rapid fire rut rules or rut tips here for the
- 45:54Speaker 1: last like ten minutes or cell that we have fifteen
- 45:56Speaker 1: minutes or cell. Let's just go back and forth with
- 45:58Speaker 1: like quick things that we ink that that you and
- 46:00Speaker 1: I are gonna be thinking about during the route, that
- 46:02Speaker 1: we'd recommend um that are going to be like part
- 46:05Speaker 1: of our core mindset in the next you know, three weeks,
- 46:08Speaker 1: because the next three weeks are kind of like you know,
- 46:10Speaker 1: as I alluded to at the beginning, this is this
- 46:12Speaker 1: is it for a lot of us. This is like
- 46:14Speaker 1: the shakra alt of the deer hunting season. We've been
- 46:16Speaker 1: looking forward to this entire year. Gonna get it done hopefully.
- 46:21Speaker 1: All Right, I'm gonna say my first rut piece of
- 46:24Speaker 1: advice is to not get too caught up in all
- 46:29Speaker 1: like the crazy ideas and tactics and always stay simple
- 46:34Speaker 1: when it comes to the right or at least try
- 46:36Speaker 1: to come back to the basics. By this, I mean
- 46:39Speaker 1: when you're confused or uncertain about what to do during
- 46:43Speaker 1: the first couple of weeks in November, the last couple
- 46:45Speaker 1: laze of October, always think back to these two principles.
- 46:49Speaker 1: Dough betting areas or pinch points. So if you can
- 46:53Speaker 1: be thinking about those two things whenever you're trying to
- 46:55Speaker 1: choose between this tree standard that or this property or
- 46:58Speaker 1: that property, if you can be around one of those
- 47:00Speaker 1: two things, you're generally gonna be in the right type
- 47:05Speaker 1: of place for the rut. So deal betting areas, of course,
- 47:08Speaker 1: are some of the main places that bucks are gonna
- 47:10Speaker 1: be checking to try to find a female to breed,
- 47:12Speaker 1: So you can either be right in those betting years
- 47:14Speaker 1: or maybe just down wind of them, those are always
- 47:16Speaker 1: going to be a great place to start when it
- 47:18Speaker 1: comes to trying and fare out how to find a
- 47:19Speaker 1: buck during the rut. And then number two, a pinch
- 47:22Speaker 1: point or funnel. You know, these are some type of
- 47:24Speaker 1: habitat or terrain feature that just kind of pinches deer
- 47:27Speaker 1: into a smaller area, which just is going to produce
- 47:30Speaker 1: a higher rate of activity through there during the rut
- 47:33Speaker 1: because these bucks are moving from betting area to betting
- 47:35Speaker 1: area or betting to food source. Just again looking for
- 47:37Speaker 1: doughes that might be ready to breed. If you can
- 47:39Speaker 1: find something that funnels that activity past your stand, that's
- 47:43Speaker 1: another great spot. So just keep those two things in mind.
- 47:46Speaker 1: It's it's the simplest rut advice out there. It's told
- 47:48Speaker 1: that the jillion times like this is no secret. But
- 47:51Speaker 1: every year when I start getting like start overthinking things,
- 47:54Speaker 1: I just need to remind myself go back to the basics,
- 47:57Speaker 1: think about the basics, and and kind of filter all
- 48:00Speaker 1: your thoughts through that. So that's my first tip. Sounds good,
- 48:04Speaker 1: I would say mine is identify what you're looking for,
- 48:09Speaker 1: you know, And I'm just gonna talk specifically about bucks
- 48:12Speaker 1: right now. Identify what you're looking for, um for a buck.
- 48:16Speaker 1: And if you're sitting in a location I know, I know,
- 48:19Speaker 1: and I know there's so many variables that go along
- 48:21Speaker 1: to this, because maybe you sit out on property that
- 48:24Speaker 1: only has one tree stand in it and you don't
- 48:26Speaker 1: you can't hunt anywhere else, or you haven't found anywhere
- 48:29Speaker 1: else to hunt. But don't waste your time. That's my
- 48:35Speaker 1: my first um piece of advice. If you're not seeing
- 48:40Speaker 1: what you want, move and go find something else. If
- 48:44Speaker 1: you have trail cameras, like for me, I rely on
- 48:47Speaker 1: my trail cameras to tell me a little bit of
- 48:49Speaker 1: the story. And if there's something that pops up, move in,
- 48:52Speaker 1: take a look, observe, and maybe that's just what you need,
- 48:56Speaker 1: right to make another move, to make another move and
- 48:59Speaker 1: play that game at chess, to try to put yourself
- 49:01Speaker 1: in the best possible position. However, if nothing shows up
- 49:06Speaker 1: two days in a row, and I know the rut
- 49:09Speaker 1: and I know anything could happen at any moment, and
- 49:12Speaker 1: you're not getting trail camera pictures or you're not seeing
- 49:14Speaker 1: any fresh sign, it might be time to move. Yeah,
- 49:18Speaker 1: especially you know, and I think everything we're saying here,
- 49:22Speaker 1: of course as a generalization, they'll be specifics that might different,
- 49:26Speaker 1: that might make what we've recommend be different. But like
- 49:29Speaker 1: you just said, there, Dan, if you have options, go
- 49:33Speaker 1: out and get after him. You know, if you're in
- 49:34Speaker 1: a situation where for some reason you're just all you
- 49:36Speaker 1: have as a tannic or property or something and you're
- 49:38Speaker 1: just kind of stuck there, well, then to what you
- 49:40Speaker 1: said a second ago, Dan, maybe if you do stick
- 49:42Speaker 1: it out long enough, yes, during the ruts, something can happen,
- 49:45Speaker 1: So maybe then it's just stick it out. But if
- 49:47Speaker 1: you have options, agree, because you know it just can
- 49:52Speaker 1: be here but not there, or they're not here and
- 49:54Speaker 1: you're never gonna know that unless you go check it out. UM.
- 49:57Speaker 1: So that brings me to my next tip, which is
- 50:00Speaker 1: kind of related to the sticking it out part of
- 50:02Speaker 1: things that during the rut. Other than a few of
- 50:05Speaker 1: the things we already said here, I don't think there's
- 50:07Speaker 1: anything more important than tree stand time, right. I mean,
- 50:11Speaker 1: this is that time of year when everything else goes
- 50:14Speaker 1: out the window because all the all the rules, all
- 50:17Speaker 1: the things we're saying could be completely null and void
- 50:21Speaker 1: because deer start doing crazy things at this time of year.
- 50:24Speaker 1: They might be moving in the middle of the day,
- 50:25Speaker 1: they might be moving somewhere they never usually do. UM.
- 50:29Speaker 1: You just need to be out there to sometimes be
- 50:32Speaker 1: the benefactor of kind of surprise good luck. So hunt
- 50:36Speaker 1: as much as you possibly can. If you can get
- 50:39Speaker 1: time off work, be out there. If you can hunt
- 50:42Speaker 1: all day, be out there, and on the midday thing.
- 50:45Speaker 1: I will say, for years and years and years I
- 50:47Speaker 1: was told hunt all day, chanal day, chanal day. And
- 50:50Speaker 1: I did it, and for quite a while I never
- 50:53Speaker 1: really saw anything come from it. UM. And it was
- 50:55Speaker 1: really tough to do, and it's not a lot of fun.
- 50:57Speaker 1: Sometimes it's very exhausting, sometimes painful. UM. On your back
- 51:02Speaker 1: end or your knees, as Dan can attest to. But
- 51:06Speaker 1: it can pay off. It's not like it's always gonna
- 51:09Speaker 1: pay off, but it definitely can. I've had enough mature
- 51:11Speaker 1: bucking counters over the last decade or so that I've
- 51:13Speaker 1: been doing this during the middle of the day that
- 51:16Speaker 1: it's it's worth it. But only if you are like,
- 51:19Speaker 1: really really dedicated trying to kill mature Buck. If you're
- 51:23Speaker 1: just out there to have a good time and to
- 51:25Speaker 1: have a nice fun trip with your buddies, it might
- 51:28Speaker 1: not be worth it. You might have a better trip
- 51:30Speaker 1: if you take your mid day and go back to
- 51:32Speaker 1: the cabin or back to the trailer, back to the
- 51:34Speaker 1: hotel and enjoy your friends company or something. Um. But
- 51:37Speaker 1: if you are dead set on killing mature Buck, you
- 51:40Speaker 1: should be in the tree. Um. Last year, ever, most
- 51:44Speaker 1: of you know, I almost almost had my shot at
- 51:46Speaker 1: Holy Feel at eleven o'clock, and um, I'll be sitting
- 51:49Speaker 1: all day down this year. Yea, Mark, And I apologize
- 51:53Speaker 1: that I'm gonna have to say this, but you might
- 51:56Speaker 1: have to edit this next part out because and I
- 51:58Speaker 1: think this is a us to the mental game, just
- 52:01Speaker 1: kind of piggybacking off what you're what you just said,
- 52:06Speaker 1: and that is don't be a bit And I'm sorry,
- 52:10Speaker 1: but I fall victim to that as well to where
- 52:13Speaker 1: you're you start, you start getting tired, you start you know,
- 52:17Speaker 1: all woe is me. I'm not seeing I'm not seeing bucks.
- 52:20Speaker 1: But you're not doing anything about it, right, So you
- 52:24Speaker 1: have to do something about it, and you have to move.
- 52:27Speaker 1: You have to um hunt hard, potentially all day. You
- 52:30Speaker 1: have to get up early. You can't. There's no shortcuts. Right.
- 52:34Speaker 1: If you want to execute a goal in the woods
- 52:39Speaker 1: and kill a big buck or a mature buck or
- 52:43Speaker 1: a target buck or whatever, and you're struggling. If you
- 52:48Speaker 1: start bitching, it's over and you you have to do
- 52:53Speaker 1: whatever it takes and I mean within the law to
- 52:58Speaker 1: to to a pumplished that goal. Right. If your goal is, hey, man,
- 53:02Speaker 1: I want to kill four year old this year, and
- 53:04Speaker 1: there's maybe one or two on in your entire county,
- 53:08Speaker 1: well guess what you gotta do. Man. You gotta be mobile,
- 53:11Speaker 1: and you got you got grind. And if you if
- 53:13Speaker 1: you start going no, this guy spooked me. Or if
- 53:17Speaker 1: you're a public land hunter and you're like, oh this guy,
- 53:19Speaker 1: this guy ruined my hunt, it screwed. Now I might
- 53:22Speaker 1: as well go home. Shut up, dude, move find him again,
- 53:28Speaker 1: locate him again, get back to the maps, get back
- 53:31Speaker 1: to the scouting, get back to historical data, trow camera pictures,
- 53:35Speaker 1: start over and get after him again. Right, you think
- 53:38Speaker 1: the mountain lion bitches if he misses the opportunity or
- 53:42Speaker 1: a bear or a predator in general. No, they go back,
- 53:46Speaker 1: they regroup, and they go after him again. Keep on hunting. Yeah, man,
- 53:51Speaker 1: I two thousand percent agree. I think that that maybe,
- 53:54Speaker 1: more than anything we've talked about, that might be the
- 53:57Speaker 1: very most important thing for hunting. The rut like it is,
- 53:59Speaker 1: it is so much a mental thing. Can you can
- 54:03Speaker 1: you deal with the diversity? Like guaranteed every rut I
- 54:06Speaker 1: can guarantee all of you listening to this, or almost
- 54:08Speaker 1: all of me, maybe one of you will go out
- 54:10Speaker 1: the very first day and kill the biggest buck of
- 54:11Speaker 1: your life and be done and say, oh, this rut
- 54:13Speaker 1: was easy and it went great. All the rest of
- 54:15Speaker 1: us are going to deal with some kind of adversity
- 54:18Speaker 1: over the next three weeks. We're gonna miss a deer,
- 54:20Speaker 1: We're gonna wounded deer, We're going to spook a deer.
- 54:24Speaker 1: We're going to have guys walk through a property. We
- 54:26Speaker 1: have dogs run through a property whenever a trail cameras still.
- 54:29Speaker 1: And we're gonna have our tires go flat. We're gonna
- 54:31Speaker 1: have the baby gets sick and you have to go
- 54:33Speaker 1: home and you miss half your vacation. You're gonna have
- 54:35Speaker 1: a wife that's gonna be angry at you, and you
- 54:36Speaker 1: have to go home early. You're gonna have something go
- 54:38Speaker 1: wrong over the next three weeks, and you're gonna be
- 54:42Speaker 1: faced with this decision. Are you gonna push through it?
- 54:46Speaker 1: Are you going to embrace that adversity? Said? Okay, yeah,
- 54:49Speaker 1: this thing happened. There's nothing I can do about Now.
- 54:51Speaker 1: It's water on the bridge. Now, how do I rat
- 54:54Speaker 1: to it? How do I take that? Move on from it,
- 54:56Speaker 1: learn from it, figure out what the next best option is,
- 54:59Speaker 1: Keep going, stay focused. So much of actually sitting in
- 55:03Speaker 1: the tree stand is about can you stay in it
- 55:05Speaker 1: during the whole day or whenever you're out there? Can
- 55:08Speaker 1: you avoid looking at your phone? Can you not make
- 55:11Speaker 1: this mistake I made? Can you stay focused out there
- 55:13Speaker 1: for six hours at a time or twelve hours at
- 55:15Speaker 1: a time. Can you, as you alluded to, Dan, can
- 55:18Speaker 1: you wake up at three or four or whatever every morning,
- 55:20Speaker 1: even though you're so tired after doing twelve days in
- 55:22Speaker 1: a row, can you keep going? Um? And a if?
- 55:26Speaker 1: And this all just depends on how dedicated what you
- 55:28Speaker 1: want out of this. For some people just want to
- 55:30Speaker 1: go out and have a good time. If you just
- 55:31Speaker 1: want to go and have a good time and you're
- 55:33Speaker 1: not as care you're not as worried about the end result,
- 55:35Speaker 1: then then do it. We have a good time, don't
- 55:37Speaker 1: stress as much about this stuff. But if but if
- 55:40Speaker 1: you're really dedicated to getting that tag wrapped around a
- 55:42Speaker 1: mature box antler and getting that meat in the freezer,
- 55:45Speaker 1: then this kind of mindset I think is really important. Um.
- 55:49Speaker 1: It's that mental strength. Mental strength as I think what
- 55:53Speaker 1: the name of the game is over these next few weeks, um,
- 55:56Speaker 1: and I know that I will just be coming back
- 55:58Speaker 1: to I'm sure over the next few weeks, I'm gonna
- 56:00Speaker 1: have moments where I'm like, oh, I do not want
- 56:02Speaker 1: to do this, or I'm upset about this, or I'm
- 56:04Speaker 1: stressed about this. My shingles are gonna come back. But
- 56:07Speaker 1: you just have to. And that's the thing, dude, Like
- 56:11Speaker 1: check check the story out, you know, like you're gonna
- 56:14Speaker 1: be talking to your kids someday or your grandkids someday,
- 56:18Speaker 1: and you're gonna tell the story of the you know, hey, man,
- 56:21Speaker 1: I shot this buck I call holy Field, been chasing
- 56:23Speaker 1: for several years, and I did it after having the
- 56:27Speaker 1: worst case of shingles I've ever had, the worst case
- 56:29Speaker 1: of poison ivy I ever had. I mean, come on, kid,
- 56:32Speaker 1: I had it on my genital still killing, I still
- 56:37Speaker 1: killed this buck, and I grind it out and I
- 56:40Speaker 1: did it. That's right. I can't wait to tell that
- 56:45Speaker 1: story about it. I hope you get to tell it
- 56:48Speaker 1: one of those camp fire things that you do. Yeah,
- 56:50Speaker 1: when he when he when he gets to be eighteen
- 56:52Speaker 1: years old and he's ready to hear those kinds of stories.
- 56:55Speaker 1: Let me tell you a son. Um. Yeah, man, I
- 57:00Speaker 1: think that is Um. That's some important stuff right there.
- 57:04Speaker 1: Do we have time for another quick tip or do
- 57:06Speaker 1: you need to run because I know you've got a
- 57:07Speaker 1: quick turn around here. Yeah, dude, I gotta split, all right,
- 57:12Speaker 1: So we will wrap this up. This is a quick episode,
- 57:14Speaker 1: but hopefully a few ideas and a few updates that
- 57:17Speaker 1: can that can help folks. As we head into this
- 57:20Speaker 1: most exciting time of year. So good luck. I just
- 57:23Speaker 1: want to say to all the listeners, dude, good luck.
- 57:27Speaker 1: I there's no one more than me and Mark that
- 57:30Speaker 1: want to see all you guys be successful, guys and
- 57:33Speaker 1: gals be successful out there and and do it safe.
- 57:37Speaker 1: Please yes, in the words of Dan nine fingers Johnson Wair,
- 57:41Speaker 1: damn harness, and have a great time. And Dan, you too,
- 57:47Speaker 1: good luck, Yes you too. But let's get back throughout
- 57:51Speaker 1: this year. We are, but I think that we should.
- 57:54Speaker 1: We should come back get on the podcast together in
- 57:56Speaker 1: two weeks and both have stories of of knocking down
- 58:00Speaker 1: a big bruiser all right, and that is going to
- 58:04Speaker 1: do it for this episode. So thanks for sticking around
- 58:06Speaker 1: for this quick rut preparation podcast. It's that most exciting
- 58:11Speaker 1: time of year. So get out there in the woods.
- 58:14Speaker 1: I hope you're gonna have some amazing hunts coming up.
- 58:16Speaker 1: My fingers and toes are cross for you. And as
- 58:19Speaker 1: I mentioned earlier, I'm in Nebraska, or at least on
- 58:23Speaker 1: our way to Nebraska right now. So me and my
- 58:25Speaker 1: pale Andy Stefs the stories for you next week, which
- 58:27Speaker 1: will hopefully be interesting too. So until then, the best
- 58:30Speaker 1: of luck out there, shoots straight, have a great time,
- 58:33Speaker 1: and until next time, stay wired to hunt.
