- 0:00 welcome back Rocky fans women and Gentlemen let's start that again that was weak Rocky's not weak we can we 0:07 cannot start weak Rocky is strong so we have to have a strong start [Applause] 0:21 [Applause] 0:30 [Music] well welcome back fans to episode three 0:37 of Going the Distance with myself Ryan your host and Ruben Balan your co-host 0:43 the co-host like a co-anchor is that mean there's a primary anchor I think that's cooperatively anchoring okay that 0:50 makes sense because I see this as an equal hosting oh bless your 0:56 heart you know you remember American Idol the first SE who doesn't well just Justin and Kelly 1:03 to from Justin to Kelly that's right well Kelly Clarkson won spoiler alert Kelly Clarkson if you're DVR is 1:11 still backed up yeah so the first season American Idol had two hes oh that's 1:17 right the fate of dunan his name was dunan dunan dunan so who's the duneman 1:23 in this story we're on episode three we're both here together but in time we'll find out who's who's the dunan 1:29 between us maybe but what's unfortunate is duneman my understanding was he 1:35 thought he didn't like sharing the stage with CEST now this was before Ryan CEST was CEST he was just Ryan SEC of the 1:43 American Idol hosting thing just a young boy with a highlights in his hair highlights in his hair and questions in 1:49 the closet and uh he wasn't the Ryan SE that we know today yeah but dunman cuz 1:57 dunan bowed out said I can't share the stage so actually I just Googled this right now I was talking on CNN this is a 2:03 new uh story because they're wrapping up of course they're wrapping up the final season for years Brian dunman wouldn't 2:09 talk about American Idol you remember dunman right I barely did I do he was 2:14 the guy who famously or perhaps not so famously co-hosted Idol with Ryan CIS during the first season and then made 2:21 the decision to leave the show on his own yes he was not fired he was not let go he left on his own who would who knew 2:29 that would go on to become such a TV Juggernaut certainly not dunman who struck it out on his own to pursue an 2:36 acting career actually they put a acting career wouldn't it be an acting career a n yeah 14 years later American 2:44 Idol is starting its final season dunan is still looking for breakthrough success as an actor it's not over yet 2:51 his life what a dig e it's a little bit of a dig it is a dig like you don't need to mention he's still looking for it cuz 2:57 we haven't seen what's what's what's the dungle bin movie that's coming up this summer starring dun here's the picture 3:02 of him clearly he doesn't have like he doesn't have a personal chef I was very upset about for a long long time dunan 3:09 44 who calls himself a television history footnote on his Twitter bio you 3:15 got to make up your mind that either you're going to be that angry guy for the rest of your life or you got to move 3:21 on it's taken me a long time to get there probably 12 years oh the CNN did 3:28 mention they were co-hosts together so yeah we're co-host we're co-host for now but let me just say I will not be 3:33 pursuing an acting career at the 10er age of 40 well 3:39 speaking of acting Rocky oh hey this is uh about Rocky isn't it Rocky going in 3:45 the distance with uh Ruben and Ryan or Ryan and Ruben and we're going to go to the distance today with the continuation 3:51 story of Rocky bboa and his life and journey in Rocky part one well this yeah 3:57 this act 2 b and so we're moving on to I believe 4:02 Paulie we've met the we've met the key players the key players are not Spider 4:07 Rico and Dipper even though we Dipper's the Dunkleman of the rocky di Dipper is the 4:14 Dunkleman he had a chance to be a contender you had a chance to be a contender Dipper we no that was Ryan 4:20 doing it I don't want credit for that no that was Ryan on the spot un asked for 4:26 impersonation of Mickey and I'm not very good at any kind of impersonation SE for Chewbacca we have we've met Adrian we've 4:35 met Mickey and now we're going to meet on screen Paulie Paulie and by the way 4:40 we've met cuff and links we've met cuff and Link buus and buckus this is big so 4:45 we got Paulie they're at the the bar I forget the bar's name people are going to be like how could you forget the bar's name yeah right I know I'm 4:52 terrible Rocky as he's walking into the bar which I like he picked that guy off the street who was drunk and out 5:00 Rocky is salt of the earth he is salt of the earth salt of the earth so Rocky is just that guy he's just that guy Lucky 5:06 Seven Tavern the Lucky Seven of course okay so he's at the Lucky Seven he asks a fellow pool player uh where's Paulie 5:13 and he says he's in the bathroom Rocky goes in there there's Paulie back to the camera looking in in where a mirror 5:21 should have been mhm and Paulie's mad because somebody broke the freaking mirror he said who broke he said he he 5:29 was so mad about the miror now keep in mind and we all know what Paulie looks like the guy the fact that the fact that 5:35 this individual would spend any kind of time in the mirror to fix himself 5:42 up he had a comb in his hand as you know he was balding if not bald do you 5:47 remember dad would always have a black comb in his back in his back pocket yes 5:53 that was the thing though that was the thing the people did have the Black Comb people groomed themselves despite their 5:59 station in life and dad had was a great station life no no I'm just saying with Paulie Paulie was obviously a lower 6:05 station in life yep his hair I don't think you could put a dog brush through 6:11 his hair let alone a f tooth comb if you see his hair when he had this so I find it funny so he's in there looking at and 6:18 when you watch the movie I don't think you can actually see any glass so whatever he's looking into 6:24 might just literally be a Shard left on the wall just a little fragment that's blocked by his body cuz he's looking at 6:30 the wall but I can't see a mirror anywhere maybe he's just kind of like looking to where it should be at the 6:35 very least cuz his back is to the camera looking at the wall he's fixing his hair and Paul makes the infamous line I want 6:41 to he's so mad about the mirror being broken that he wants to split their head with a 6:46 razor that's pretty violent it it is an incredibly violent 6:52 statement about a broken mirror by the way I hear that he's endorsing Trump ber 6:57 Young no Paulie please well we shouldn't spoil anything 7:03 so we'll leave it at that I don't think Paul's endorsing anybody B Young is still alive by the way B Young the actor 7:09 I love that line cuz it's it's an interesting outof theplace line because it's very but it's a very violent line 7:15 the imagery of splitting someone's head open with a razor like if you were given 7:21 the task give me an instrument to split your head open with in a gruesome way people 7:26 would go for blunt objects sure a razor would be cuz it's small it would 7:33 be small you would need to have a lot of velocity a lot of momentum a lot of or just time inertia like yeah so either 7:41 it's a one chance deal but the the way I looked at it to me it's even more gruesome is that he's taking time with 7:47 the small razor to saw through the head so it's it's an actual process where an 7:53 AXS or bad would be a quick motion you know I would venture to say that if he had the opportunity he wouldn't have 7:58 fallen through I think uh Paulie's character probably does not fall through 8:04 on a lot of things in life he does speak a little harsher than he actually will do his bark is worse than his bite yes 8:11 the conversation continues where they now Rocky is now asking as we would do 8:16 hey your sister what's her deal mhm and Paulie goes well what do you mean What's 8:22 your deal I've been you know making my moves on her for some time now and she's not changing her tune doesn't change she 8:30 seems like she's interested but she's not really the momentum is so slow like 8:35 I don't know what's going on here is there something wrong with my face and he says to uh he says while she's 8:41 pushing 30 years old if she doesn't find somebody she's going to dry up so right 8:46 here this is an interesting element throughout the story for and it's weird to me I don't have a sister I have three 8:53 brothers yes Riven how many brothers do you have uh also three that I know of okay so we you and I both have the Mom 8:59 and Dad have assured me there is no others there's no others we have the same parents if you didn't know what I 9:04 find what I find interesting here is Paulie makes mention right here first mention my sister and her reproduction 9:12 capabilities yeah we know that that they live together they probably have lived together for some time they have a house 9:18 together probably their whole lives so there's something probably happened to the parents mhm you know abandonment 9:23 death who knows we know that they they've only had each other for years probably a couple decades of very least 9:31 it seems I would imagine the Whole 30 years of of her life yeah maybe he's 9:36 he's probably 10 years older and so he's raised her almost like a daughter yeah he's worried about her ability to 9:41 produce children and move on with her life I love what Rocky says to him he 9:46 says to Paulie I don't see a crowd around you either the idea being that yeah Paulie is saying what's wrong with 9:53 my sister she's homely she's quiet no guys are chasing her your guy that's 9:58 chasing her she's giving you the cold shoulder I don't know what her deal is what's her problem and Rocky already 10:04 protective of his future wife saying hey I don't see a crowd around you neither I 10:10 always like that little exchange they have going on there Rocky leaves the bar after seeing the Paul Creed on the 10:15 screen saying that they're going to have a fight in Philadelphia he's fighting uh 10:20 somebody named green I think and AG green will later get injured which will play into the story later a a side note 10:27 in real life Bert Young and Talia Shire are six years apart oh 10:34 so I guess 10 yeah so he was 36 in that film in that or at least played if well 10:41 we could look up his age in 19 well what's what's he writing yeah for those plan at home you can do the math and Facebook us the yeah well we know that 10:49 Sloan is 69 now and he was 30 then oh he would have been 36 well there you go I 10:54 think most the I think they kind of got the cast here really right I think they try to cast people's age in this movie wow he's 36 he just looks older do you 11:02 ever find why why everybody that was an adult when I was a kid when I look at 11:07 those pictures even though I'm older than that now they still have this gravitas to them that this older this 11:14 right this I am not that I'm still just a little boy it's weird and maybe our 11:20 listeners know what we're talking about for example Stallone is 30 in Rocky he is 10 years younger than I am now in the 11:28 film that I just watched but he still looks older than me I feel like he's older than me even in that film now I 11:35 know he looks younger than he looks now I I recognize the I recognize physics that he is a younger looking Stallone 11:41 mhm but he doesn't he doesn't seem like if I would walk into the if I was to walk on the to the film and meet Rocky 11:49 say hey dude how's it going he's like how you doing like would he see me as a 40-year-old yeah yeah I don't know 11:56 interesting he leaves the bar he has a that famous famous scene with Marie the 12:01 little girl Marie little Marie uh gives a big speech about you know she's hanging out around with the wrong type 12:08 of crowd coconuts you know the coconuts and lemons and if you hang out with coconuts you become a coconut if you 12:14 hang out with lemons you become a lemon and so he's trying again being Rocky he's concerned about the neighborhood 12:20 he's concerned about what he considers his family people that he sees every day from the street corner singing people 12:26 the guys in the tavern uh all these perer characters in his life so he's acting like a little bit of 12:33 Father type to her saying you know you shouldn't smoke you're too young uh he goes I'm going to have to use a bad word 12:39 I'm going to have to use a bad word I love this and you're like what's that bad word goes [ __ ] there said [ __ ] I 12:46 love how that's the it's a weird way to pronounce a word [ __ ] yeah it does it doesn't roll off the tongue right funny 12:53 she says and I only caught this because I had the captions on but but you can hear it she says I'm only 12 13:01 oh oh that breaks my heart she says that yeah but I think what she's trying to 13:06 tell Rocky is I'm young and I haven't had that kind of activity in my life but rock is saying it doesn't matter because 13:12 it looks like it looks bad yeah so he's making the point that I get it that you're not sexually active at a young 13:19 age if you look and present yourself like it then it doesn't matter and you're going to become what you're 13:25 presenting yourself to be eventually yes which is pretty wise it was wise for old 13:30 rock to say that and he says you know just remember what I told you and she 13:35 goes yeah yeah yeah don't if I act like a [ __ ] I'm going to turn into one yeah something like that he said and then 13:42 he's leaving she goes hey Rock he goes yeah then she says screw you Creo and 13:47 slams the door and then Rocky says well yeah who am I to give advice Creo when 13:53 we see consistently yeah he just can't seem to connect with the girl that he's chasing 14:01 with the the life that he chose uh with the secondary Life as a lone shark collector he just 14:07 consistently hits brick walls and people they trying to connect with he's not connecting yeah and so at this point in 14:13 some people's life they may find comfort in the bottle or a drug or who knows 14:18 what else but he could somehow maybe that fighting spirit that he doesn't know he has is still there well I think 14:24 that's I think that's something to be said that when we're going through tough 14:30 times not go for a vice that's going to be detrimental not trying to be Oprah 14:35 here but I would recommend a healthy activity over an unhealthy one myself uh so trivia Stallone was a smoker yes and 14:43 then he quit while doing the movie because he smoke throughout the movie but yeah but he was like real smoker but 14:50 in his training he had a for the movie he had to quit smoking because he was 14:55 getting out of breath that's interesting he was told to quit by Mickey I think so it might have been that weird life and 15:01 art and art and life CU in the film he quits in the film too interesting okay we know you've seen the movie we're not 15:07 going to hit every single detail so bear with us it might sound and feel like it it yes I really hope that those who are 15:16 fans of the show Rocky probably is our audience it's probably not the Harry 15:21 Potter crowd no but though there might be an overlap there might be an overlap you are allowed to be a Harry Potter fan 15:27 and a rocky fan they they wouldn't cancel each other out I've never seen one I've never read the books Oh I 15:33 thought you never seen the fan I enjoy the books oh no I've seen the fans okay I've seen the fans of Harry Potter but 15:39 i' but I've never watched the movies or read the Harry Potter books well sounds 15:44 like we have oh my gosh sounds like we have a journey sounds like a 15:49 newscast okay clarify okay I began watching the first one at somebody's 15:55 house right there's some type of I don't know broom something happening I don't know some magic just magic and I was 16:01 like I don't care what happens once the magic hit like I just like I don't care you have to like something or you don't 16:08 I I don't have anything against it I just don't like it well that's that's fair is but Rocky these type of movies 16:14 those are the ones that speak to me I prefer because like an acoustic song over an electronic song I prefer real 16:21 it's stripped down yeah it's the Bare Bones of it's It's unplugged it's unplugged yeah Rocky was unplugged Creed 16:29 and he got killed just kidding all right so he meets with goso and goso says you know I hear things I hear you're taking 16:35 a girl out he gives him 50 bucks for a date 50 bucks for a date yes so goel gave him 50 bucks to take her out for a 16:43 date Adrian out for a date so that's he got $50 which in today's was about $200 16:49 that's a that's a nice date that's a great date yeah what I love is I think Rocky pocketed oh I'm sure he did 16:57 because he took Adrian ice skating the guy was in the zambo work was closed out 17:02 the rink and they they bargained the guy started off with the greatest bargaining 17:08 scene in film history the guy said I'll give you the ring for 10 bucks for 10 minutes and Rocky's like you know you 17:14 look she looks sad and she looks sick over there he actually said that he used 17:20 her mousy from a distance to say that this individual is basically depressed 17:25 and she only likes ice skating it it it will help her mood oh yeah let's 17:32 do it for the kid the 30-year-old woman over there so he says I'll how about seven and he's like no 10 for 10 minutes 17:40 and rock is like I'll give you nine come on and then he goes it's Thanksgiving the other guy says 10 bucks and Rocky's 17:47 like okay I'll give you 10 bucks Rocky cannot he can't break 17:53 thumbs you know what I mean yes he he brings the guys out from the cold into the tavern took the offer that was 17:59 originally offered 10 bucks for 10 minutes so they're out there that first date if there is a better first date 18:06 film please in your comments below tell me that date and I will compare it and 18:12 I'll will look at it with unbiased SI about a better first date agree 18:18 agreed I I can't think of anything so we talked about already about the empty rink the empty rank Paulie told Rocky 18:24 before the date started that she likes ice skating so Rocky's doing this all on the Fly this this is before Google 18:29 texting anything like that so they walk to the rink to go ice SK it's Clos Thanksgiving they get 10 bucks for 10 18:35 minutes and he tells the guy go get the skates so there's Adrian wearing skates and she gets out on the ice and you got 18:42 rocky walking SL running next to her as she shimmies across the ice so what I what I 18:48 get a kick out of these characters is that we we're told from Paulie's perspective that she loves ice skating 18:54 yes okay but she can't skate yeah I think it's like you hear that 19:01 somebody like penguins and then all everybody gives them Penguins right mentioned one time and then it's it 19:08 equals this is what they're all about tell me if you've heard this before our 19:13 cousin Jen brought her husband to visit our grandparents okay so Grandma made a 19:19 special meal it's a Brussels sprout meal if I'm telling this correctly Steve the 19:25 husband said I don't like brussel sprouts he he wasn't eating the Brussels sprouts he just said very very honest 19:32 but I don't like him either but but if I'm telling the story right even if I'm telling it wrong right it matches 19:38 Steve's personality right of saying no grandma grandpa said I think it's 19:44 Grandma I really don't like you know brussel sprouts either and then the grandpa goes 19:51 well you know since we're all saying this either do I so what happened was 50 19:58 years ago for their first Christmas dinner Grandma thought she's going to make a real nice meal a recipe that she 20:06 hadn't tried Grandpa did not like it say m this is great delicious you know what 20:11 we should probably only save this for special occasions Grandpa was like few I dodged a bullet I don't have to eat this 20:17 all the time Grandma thought the same thing well I'll just save this then for special occasions so they had it usually 20:24 for Christmas or special occasions for 50 years where neither of them said to each other I actually don't like that 20:30 dish cuz they wanted the other person to be happy with the dish yes yeah there you go so sometimes it's better to be a 20:36 St just just to get it out just to get it out well Adrian she to be fair she 20:42 may have enjoyed ice skating recently yes there was no indication that she's 20:47 enjoyed this activity yeah for 28 years this is that she now likes ice skating 20:54 sure paully could have said she has recently taken up ice skating it's funny if that dialogue was thrown in and then 21:00 you see her shimmy in the ice would have made sense that she she likes it but she's poor at it but we're led to 21:06 believe as a viewer again that because she enjoys this she should be good at it but it fits the character you know yeah 21:13 but you also don't have to be good at something to enjoy it exactly enter the podcast that's right for our 10 21:20 listeners out there keep mind well I maybe 10 you're very optimistic they're 21:27 shimming along the ice and this is great the back and forth here is one of the best dialogues in the movies you've got 21:33 them asking about each other each other's lives which is great that's a first date Adrian is really interested 21:39 in knowing hey Rocky why do you fight I don't get it she legitimately doesn't understand and maybe it's a fair 21:45 question you're 30 years old yeah and you get your face punched in for money I I actually don't get it there you go 21:52 like I I think I do well his response was that uh he doesn't have much of a brain the the Terrible irony here is 21:59 this reflects a childhood issue oh it's because we see through the movies that Rocky himself is not a dumb person 22:07 though he might not be educationally proficient in the education system he's bright he's kind 22:14 he's empathetic he has skills that if they were honed by a proper caregiver he could have been something else you know 22:20 I'm sure some people have passed well people have publicly passed off uh Stallone as dumb dumb and then that's 22:28 yeah and that's now that we're bringing it up we should bring it up because he played that character so well people 22:33 thought that Stallone was inarticulate yes not bright yes you know for the 22:39 ramble characters the rocky now he played those roles and played them well when you see him in interviews and I 22:45 challenge you guys who think that sonone is dumb go look at an interview clearly clearly a bright guy and he wrote the 22:51 film yes like he wrote these characters so he wrote Tom Hanks didn't even write 22:57 porest scump you know what I mean Tom Hanks did not write for I don't think he's written anything I don't think he's uh yes he has what has he written the 23:04 movie that's one of his weakest movies I think Turner and Hooch no uh that thing you do oh that thing you do I think he 23:11 directed it that that's like where you just have like a bunch of star power you put something there right that Thing You 23:17 Do Was His passion project so put this way so you got rocky sorry Stone his 23:22 passion project is Rocky mhm Tom Hanks passion project that thing you do that 23:27 thing you do now this so is there great actors who get picked for the right roles or there great artists who make 23:34 the right roles for themselves does that make sense how many franchises has Tom Hanks created uh none so he did write 23:42 that thing you do okay he's a writer and some other stuff like like writing credit C writing tell play for a little 23:49 bit of banner brothers from Earth to noon oh he also wrote Larry Crown he 23:54 wrote Larry Crown this is written by uh Tom Hanks okay so Larry Crown how well did that one do it has a solid six which 24:03 is two points under rocky rocky and this is 30 years in industry and he also 24:09 wrote it with Nia vellos she's the one that did My Big Fat Greek Wedding right 24:15 so he had an experienced rider with them yes he had experienced rider and they together pulled in a six with star power 24:22 again we're not criticizing Tom Ang as a man or as an actor no this but show as a 24:28 writer as a writer as a writer so you know so again Stallone creates the characters that are Punchy but he 24:35 himself was that a pun intended no well it works for a boxer and he brings it up 24:41 in Rocky too when he's talking to the commercial director okay he says I'm not Punchy I just talk this way that's right 24:48 you know and that's so he already this is when he starts to get his own confidence as a character that just 24:54 because I fight and just because I can't read I'm actually not stupid so he's starting to fight that own inner it's 25:00 tough when people talk to you like you're stupid is it [Laughter] 25:07 ribbon I walked into that one I was just about to say dead but people wouldn't 25:13 understand but people would not understand what debt means we'll get there one day we'll get there one day I do want to mention regarding the date 25:18 though yeah absolutely end of November yep uh there's a rose bush in bloom okay 25:25 in front of Paulie and Adrian Adrian home yeah I there was was there 25:30 Philadelphia is not known for its warm Winters no so I guess we'd have to know when those was filmed yeah interesting 25:37 all right well it could have been a warm could it could have been a warm fall you know global warming has been taking 25:43 place for a long time you know I think Al G climate change I think it's Al gour I think before he invented the internet 25:50 was the first spokesperson for climate change well he was inventing it at that time yes yeah he he didn't 25:57 know what he was inventing he was just throwing litter away and contributing that's awesome idling his car Rocky so 26:03 Rocky answers the question why do I fight first he said I don't I don't have brain so I have to use my body so I 26:09 think it was his father that said that to him father or mother darn it doesn't matter one of his parents mhm he also 26:16 said because I can't sing or dance yes that's a classic have you ever liked a movie so much that you quoted that movie 26:23 in everyday conversation oh yeah yeah I do that with I can't sing or dance I've done it for years and I very rarely and 26:31 I guess in a sad way I don't get hey you got that from Rocky mhm I've had people say why are you in the Navy that's my 26:38 go-to answer so when people say why did you join the military I always say because I can't sing or dance and they 26:43 get a checkle out of it but no one ever says hey it's a Timeless line it is a Timeless line cuz it just basically 26:49 means I I admit it I wasn't born with whatever that is to be an artist MH 26:55 people can sing well there people that can really sing if everybody was born an artist and very few people could you 27:01 know be in the Navy then everybody would be amazed that somebody's in the Navy well the idea yeah the idea that 27:06 everyone barring you know deficiency everyone can see yes so I'm not going to 27:12 like everyone has visual site I'm not going to a concert to watch somebody who can visually site things yes look at 27:19 that tree yes it's green so because we all we can all spot trees we're not 27:24 excited by that mhm somebody that can sing and sing well I was like wow that's something that you have that the other 27:32 15,000 people in this crowd don't have so that's an interesting idea so I can't 27:38 sing or dance I admit it so I had to pick a job to pay the bills yeah and he says the job that I picked involved my 27:44 body CU I could take punches and I can give punches yeah hey have you ever been in a boxing like gloves ring I have 27:52 slipped on the gloves before I forget where but it was in my youth somebody had a pair of boxing gloves and they're 27:58 room or garage and being a rocky fan I put them on and felt what it felt like 28:04 to hit something with the gloves on with the I think they had a big bag and I've 28:10 been kind of like tapped back with the glove on the other person's hand to see what it feels like so but I've never 28:15 gone with you know the headpiece on mouth guard in no I've never done that okay I I have when I was a teen uh with 28:23 Matt Hall W yeah you never supposed to put like vaseline on here they well they 28:29 do that they do in the film they put that under their eyes and I found out why so I I have a scar on the bottom of 28:34 my chin can't really see te the skin yeah so yeah tore the skin so Matt punched me in the face and it just split 28:40 my skin you know granted this is like 30 20 years ago was using me but for him he 28:46 I got a really good punch in and actually the punch didn't hurt no it was it distraction yeah it just it just 28:53 broke the skin like that well it sounds like you guys have to have a rematch with Vaseline 29:02 who's to say we have it oh wow wow wow Adrian says well the opposite was said 29:07 about me and the opposite was his her mother or whatever said well you don't have much of a body hey feminists 29:13 everyone take a deep breath I am I am okay this is a film in 29:18 the 70s but the idea was that she didn't have the body of a you know of a fighter 29:23 or the body of a womanly charm basically she could marry into success yeah she 29:30 would have to use her brain now we could say that we've come a long way in 40 years just ask the Beverly Hills 29:37 housewives of whatever yeah Orange County Orange County yeah I would like to think I'm believe it or not I'm a 29:44 feminist at heart I believe obviously that everyone should get paid whatever job they're doing if you are a female 29:49 doctor and you are a male doctor you have the same credentials well it actually is mind balling to me that you're not it is and that's one one good 29:57 thing I like about the military straight it's straight pay absolutely could you imagine if the people that I was working 30:02 with were getting paid less because of their gender that would not fly so the military at the very least say what you 30:08 want about them those are you know they do pay what I want I that you but anyone 30:14 that's listen Okay that the uh the military gets that right we get a lot of 30:20 things wrong like any other organization but equality but equal pay there is no gender in fact even the physical fitness 30:26 test is gender gender free wow it's just a standard that all age and gender have 30:32 to pass Canada gets that right at the very least whatever rank you are and whatever trade you are it's that's your 30:37 pay whether you're male female my mind is still blown political season right now yes and I heard you know Bernie 30:44 Sanders talking on a talk show and that topic came up I looked at my watch it's 30:50 2016 it's crazy it's absolutely crazy again I'm a I'm I'm a feminist at heart in the sense I'm a humanist meaning 30:57 we're we're still talking about it's almost like saying they're black so they should get less pay I can't believe 31:03 we're still doing that with the female male thing it does blow my maybe I'm naive can somebody please explain to me 31:09 why that's bot okay so after their their ice gain date they go to the apartment 31:14 and it's a again this whole like again I give the challenge somebody show me a 31:20 better first date sequence in a film and I will hang up my gloves 31:28 because as a podcaster wow three episodes in I'm willing to put this podcast on the line 31:33 Reuben wow wow that's that's quite the because the day continues not just from the ice rink because now they go to the 31:39 apartment and Rocky goes up the steps to his apartment says hey come on in and she's like no I can't it's late but you 31:46 can see the internal the internal struggle that she's having like I'm I'm she's thinking I'm having a good time uh 31:52 but she's you know nervous obviously Rock's a imposing fella he's been around 31:58 the block she can sense that oh and he's got his his arms up on there yeah so they go inside so she does agree to come 32:05 in she goes in Rocky does his little Shuffle around and goes you know can I get you something to eat yeah uh I got 32:11 donuts I got cupcakes he offers her three different he has three different desserts that he offers her and then 32:18 which is actually pretty good I think cupcakes I was like man I could go for a cupcake 32:24 Rock then he goes over to his couch which is covered in garbage and litter and he moves a couple of the newspapers 32:29 over and he leans back and says why don't you come over here and sit down you know it's not a bad couch I don't 32:34 know I love how he he's trying to sell the couch you know he actually mentions that the couch 32:41 isn't a bad couch yes and she's nervous she goes I should go I I'll let Paulie 32:48 know that I'm yes that I'm you know okay or whatever you he said well and she 32:53 goes do you have a phone he goes no I got I got rid of the phone interruption 32:58 yes which I always the bright side of life yeah so he got rid of his 33:04 locker because too much hassle too much hassle he lost he got rid of the phone because of interruption now we know why 33:11 he got rid of the phone yes he couldn't pay the bills yes but I love how for him 33:16 it's like it interrupted his busy life of what you so he opens up the window 33:22 cre another famous scene opens up the window calls off for Paulie hey yo Paulie your sister's with me calls you 33:28 back later slimes the window that you know so that's taken care of when I was a little kid I thought that really 33:33 Paulie heard that well that's the thing is what was the distance from Rocky's house to Adrian's house I don't know but 33:39 I really thought that because was Rocky just being silly or was he being pragmatic I think he was being silly you 33:45 think so I do I think I think he's just calling out into the well she didn't 33:51 laugh [Laughter] no but that's the Great Character of 33:56 Rocky is his just enough silliness that is he playing dumb a little bit playing 34:03 up to it a little bit even as a character mhm or is he sometimes he actually is just a little bit slow in 34:09 the gecko so it's that fine line that the character himself plays himself yeah he he walks that tight rope quite nicely 34:18 so a little trivia or not maybe Gaff I should say when Adrian enters Rocky's 34:24 apartment uh he's wearing fingerless gloves he removes his when he removes 34:29 his hat and a sweater the very next shot when he's showing Adrian the turtles right he has no gloves on they just took 34:37 them off very quickly yeah that that's one way to yeah when those when those uh 34:43 gaps happen in movies and TV shows where you see the clothing item there not there the next scene in theory I think 34:49 there isn't the two to three second you could have literally got like whipped off the gloves well he's got quick hands 34:55 he has quick hands he's got quick hands he could have easily taken off the gloves yeah he was asked why he fights 35:00 this is actually important so he he made the joke he can't sing or dance but he actually brought up the real reason he 35:06 wanted to prove that's the word bum the B the word bum bu M was in this movie is 35:13 thrown around as an insult yes it's almost like you're degenerate you're useless and it's taken in such like if I 35:20 were to call you hey you bum You' be like huh but I guess in this time period 35:26 our location are both 40 years ago being called a bum is a real insult so Rocky 35:31 actually says Adrian he wanted to prove to himself or to the world that he's not 35:37 a bum and he thought the fighting would be that answer yeah he's got a skill 35:42 exploit it this is also during this time that he explains what Southpaw is his left-handed fighter so he explains this 35:49 because even though it's a legitimate issue and he's basically acknowledging that at 30 he has not succeeded in 35:55 proving that he's not a BM it's obvious yes so he's trying to tell her I became 36:01 a boxer to prove that I'm not a bum but dot dot dot it's because I'm a self paaw 36:06 a lot of people don't like to fight me so I haven't found success because people avoid me and I can't climb the 36:12 ranks so it's kind of a legitimate reason because but at the same time he 36:18 just you know whether you call it luck right place right time but also the fact that he fights in a different style than 36:24 boxers want to fight with so all those things added up in the apartment Rocky 36:29 senses that Adrian wants to leave she says I shouldn't be here I've never been alone in a man's apartment he makes that 36:35 ly yes they're all the same I love that ly that they're all the same so and she 36:41 goes I'm I'm nervous or I'm I'm comfortable and he and this is the show is vulnerable he says well I am too and 36:47 I like that he says I'm nervous too you know I might seem I have a little bit of swager it's probably not his first time 36:53 to be intimate with a woman but he's nervous he wants us to work he's really he's pursu her for so long he's so close 37:00 to just having an intimate moment with her that he's like the fish that's about to get away he sense that because she 37:06 goes through the door and there there's a famous again I say that word famous it's just famous to me no no no before 37:12 you were saying Infamous no but I'm I'm just keep saying famous well famous all right Well's let's stick with famous 37:19 okay because it's a very popular movie it is a popular movie seen by a few million people as we discussed before 55 37:25 million people saw in the theater he blocked walks the doorway now again keep in mind 40 Years cuz you know we hear 37:33 about you know bill the bill coses The Bill Cosby of the world gesi yeah it's a 37:39 weirdly uncomfortable scene for just a moment because if you don't know the character enough or know the movie Enough especially if you see it today's 37:45 eyes of kind of films are written different now than they were in the 70s I understand this so he puts his arms 37:50 out and literally puts his hand on the door from opening and blocks her escape 37:56 to his left yes so she's caged in maybe this would be Infamous then a little bit 38:02 at that moment it turns into a tender moment but there's that initial scene that through 2016 eyes I feel like your 38:09 feminism yes is wearing off a little bit it is wearing off a little bit so he 38:15 traps her yes but not in a threatening way no in a plead it's it is a physical 38:21 I think obviously if she ducked under his arms I think the character had been established Strong Enough by this point 38:26 that you know heent he's a gentle good guy brings the guy into the tavern won't break thumbs he says take off your hat 38:36 and take off your glasses I love that because she's been hiding under the hat and under the glasses MH even though she 38:42 checked herself in the mirror before the first day she actually did a quick check to see how she looked and the glasses were skewed mhm so she is aware enough 38:49 that she doesn't want to be ugly takes off the glasses and the hat and he says 38:54 you have beautiful eyes you have pretty hair you know you're a beautiful woman he says I always knew you're pretty and 39:00 she says don't tease me so we sense obviously she's been not appreciated by people and he says I'm not teasing I 39:07 will say this for the third and final time if somebody can find me I'm more romantic first date than this meeting he 39:14 says I'm going to kiss you and you don't have to kiss me back but I'm going to kiss you and Reuben I will tell you right now I have done that line oh 39:21 really I have done that line wow no word of a lie crossed my heart and I can't 39:27 remember remember the female oh it was a female it was a female oh good for you yeah it doesn't work as well oh you're 39:33 the you're the Navy I am the Navy was female listeners both Ruben I are happily married so please not to each 39:39 other though not to I when I was a teenager I've used 39:45 this line on a girl wow as a teenager as a teenager do you remember her name that's I honestly don't was bad breath 39:53 no we might have to edit that out really really yeah I'll take out her name thank 40:00 you we call her was it uh bad breath individual Stacy Stacy Stacy bad Stacy 40:08 that's hilarious because sty we were just talking previously to this episode 40:14 to Ryan's wife Becky about Ryan's goto fictitious female is Stacy Stacy mine's 40:21 Tina your you know when you're saying like even if you were a Stacy or Tina in 40:26 my life this thing would still be happening the idea being that whatever event is happening is not dependent on 40:32 the person you married yes yeah so my go to name is Stacy so bad breath Stacy bad 40:37 breath Stacy was it was not her no it was uh it was like senior Senior High School type years okay and I and I was 40:44 doing it not to be funny I was that was my line well no I believe you yeah and so I said I'm going to kiss you did she 40:49 kiss you back yes you remember in Seinfeld where Jerry was breaking up 40:55 with a girl right and then and she writes him a letter right that just very romantic right George and Jerry are 41:02 watching TV yes okay yes very lines from the Romantic letter pleading for Jerry 41:09 to come back is in this movie right by this point Jerry had already said up date to get back together right at some 41:15 point this girl probably has seen the movie since then maybe she didn't see it with me but she's probably going to 41:22 say yeah well it worked and uh it did work but here's the thing maybe I didn't need the line but I used it so he they 41:29 kiss they have a a great kiss and they collapse to the to the floor and let's just say that scenes thereafter with the 41:37 Adrian character she's full of life uhhuh she's confident oh good uh she's 41:43 uh some kiss she doesn't wear the glasses anymore whoa that's her eyesight 41:50 her eyesight has healed I got to tell my wife cuz I I wear glasses yeah you need 41:57 The Rock oh so so St was Sly he was Sly he 42:05 was Sly yes we're running out of cassette tape we are running out of cassette tape again again will this end 42:11 so feel free to turn off but I'm going to keep talking okay so have you turned off no no no no not they turned off they 42:18 might have they might not some people probably have already turned off let's face it but there's a little Easter you 42:23 think someone's gone to the third episode has somebody have they gone to the third they've made it for the first 42:29 two and they're like not everybody's going to go the distance with us that's the challenge can you go the distance 42:35 with that the episode's officially over okay I have some words for you okay talked about reputable Peerless of note 42:43
