Transcript
- 0:00Hello everyone , and welcome back to the Spy Trader podcast !
- 0:04I am your host , Barnaby Bullseye , and I am thrilled to have you with us for our afternoon market checkin .
- 0:10It is 2:30 pm on Wednesday , May 20th , 2026 , here on the Pacific Coast , and after a few days of looking a bit shaky , the bulls have definitely come out to play today .
- 0:23We are seeing a significant rebound across the board , mostly thanks to some incredible news from the world of artificial intelligence and a little bit of breathing room in global politics .
- 0:35Let's look at the numbers .
- 0:36The S&P 500 is up over one percent , sitting at 7,418.41 , which is very close to its alltime high .
- 0:48The Nasdaq is leading the charge , up over one point five percent , while the Dow Jones even managed to cross back over that huge 50,000 mark earlier today .
- 0:58The VIX , or our market fear gauge , has dropped significantly as some of that bond market pressure starts to ease up .
- 1:06The biggest story of the day is undoubtedly Nvidia .
- 1:09They just reported record revenue of 81.6 billion dollars for their first quarter , which is an 85 percent jump from last year .
- 1:18They also announced a massive 80 billion dollar share repurchase plan .
- 1:23This news has sparked a rally across the entire tech sector , lifting companies like Advanced Micro Devices and Intel .
- 1:32But it's not just the chip makers .
- 1:34Because these AI data centers require so much power , utility giants like NRG Energy and Constellation Energy are seeing gains of around 8 percent .
- 1:46On the macro side , our new Fed Chair , Kevin Warsh , is keeping interest rates steady at 3.5 to 3.75 percent for now .
- 1:55However , inflation is still a bit high at 3.8 percent , largely due to energy shocks from the conflict with Iran .
- 2:03Speaking of which , oil prices have actually fallen below 100 dollars a barrel today as negotiations with Iran enter the final stages .
- 2:14This drop in oil is great news for travel stocks ; United Airlines jumped over 10 percent today , with Delta and Carnival cruise lines following close behind .
- 2:24Over in retail , things were a bit mixed .
- 2:26Target shares fell over 4 percent after their new CEO Michael Fiddelke gave a cautious outlook , but TJX Companies rose over 5 percent on really strong sales .
- 2:37So , what does this mean for your portfolio ?
- 2:40If you are looking for growth and momentum , the AI buildout is still the main event .
- 2:46You might want to look at the Invesco QQQ Trust or the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund to capture that energy .
- 2:54While Nvidia is the direct way to play it , Advanced Micro Devices is a great catchup play in that AI chip space .
- 3:02For those of you wanting to play it a bit safer , especially with the Fed signaling that rates might stay higher for longer , consider the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund .
- 3:13Walmart is also a fantastic defensive choice right now ; they are acting as a powerhouse for costconscious shoppers and have a long history of increasing dividends .
- 3:23We also see a great opportunity in financials .
- 3:26Goldman Sachs jumped nearly 5 percent today because they are expected to lead the SpaceX IPO , which could be the largest in history .
- 3:35Using the Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund is a great way to get exposure to that kind of investment banking growth .
- 3:44One word of caution , though : be careful with longterm bonds like the iShares 20 plus Year Treasury Bond ETF .
- 3:51With inflation forecasts remaining high , longterm bond prices could still face some downward pressure .
- 3:58That is it for this episode of Spy Trader !
- 4:00I am Barnaby Bullseye , reminding you to stay focused and keep an eye on those charts .
- 4:06We will see you in a few hours for the next update !
