Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, everyone, Welcome to the Inside the Birds NFL Conference
- 0:14Speaker 1: Championship preview. I'm Jeff Mosher, and it is hard to
- 0:19Speaker 1: believe we've been doing this now for let's see eighteen nineteen,
- 0:23Speaker 1: twenty one weeks, and I only got one more of
- 0:26Speaker 1: these left, and that'll be the super Bowl. So after
- 0:29Speaker 1: this weekend, there's only one NFL game remaining until August,
- 0:35Speaker 1: and you gotta wait two weeks for it, and it's
- 0:38Speaker 1: gonna be two weeks of interviews and conjecture and speculation
- 0:45Speaker 1: and talk, you know, either the two weeks leading up
- 0:47Speaker 1: to the super Bowl, especially for me, if the Eagles
- 0:49Speaker 1: aren't in it and I'm not as busy and I'm
- 0:52Speaker 1: not down wherever the super Bowl is and on radio row,
- 0:55Speaker 1: the two weeks can be kind of excruciating.
- 0:58Speaker 2: You're just waiting for the game to get.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Here, no matter who plays who. You know, you got
- 1:03Speaker 1: the Broncos, the Patriots, the Rams, and the Seahawks. I
- 1:06Speaker 1: think the Rams and Seahawks and even the Bronco all
- 1:10Speaker 1: four have had really obviously, really really good years. I
- 1:15Speaker 1: think that it'll probably lack some of the excitement or
- 1:20Speaker 1: the enthusiasm of some past Super Bowls when you've had.
- 1:23Speaker 1: You know, people love rematches, you know, Eagles Chiefs. I
- 1:26Speaker 1: think that even though if you get outside the Philadelphia
- 1:29Speaker 1: area or outside the Kansas City area, there was excitement
- 1:33Speaker 1: about the game because it was a two teams that
- 1:35Speaker 1: had played each other just a couple of years ago,
- 1:38Speaker 1: two teams that also have a.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Lot of ties.
- 1:40Speaker 1: You know, there was a lot of that with Andy Reid.
- 1:42Speaker 1: So there was two teams with marquee players, not that
- 1:46Speaker 1: there aren't any in this among these four, but really,
- 1:50Speaker 1: you know, when you look at the quarterback, it's a
- 1:52Speaker 1: quarterback driven league, and right now with the Broncos situation,
- 1:56Speaker 1: Jared Stindham as a quarterback, Drake May is a great
- 2:01Speaker 1: story in year two, but he's not Manning or Brady,
- 2:04Speaker 1: has not done anything yet, So I don't know that
- 2:07Speaker 1: he's got the same kind of allure if he's in
- 2:10Speaker 1: the super Bowl that you would have if it's a
- 2:12Speaker 1: Mahomes or if it was Josh Allen's first trip, or
- 2:16Speaker 1: you know, Hurts being there a couple of times. There
- 2:18Speaker 1: are just some guys that, you know, really take the spotlight,
- 2:22Speaker 1: and I don't know that Drake May is that guy yet.
- 2:25Speaker 1: In fact, if he loses the game and doesn't play well,
- 2:27Speaker 1: I think people will say, well, you know, he just
- 2:30Speaker 1: wasn't ready year or two.
- 2:31Speaker 2: It's tough.
- 2:32Speaker 1: You know, if he wins the game, he's probably gonna
- 2:34Speaker 1: start getting Tom Brady comparisons. But but the point is,
- 2:38Speaker 1: you know, Matthew Stafford is is certainly a star, certainly
- 2:42Speaker 1: an MVP player, probably the most exciting of all the
- 2:47Speaker 1: quarterbacks left. But he's also on the downside. Luckily for him,
- 2:53Speaker 1: his downside is still MVP caliber. If you guys remember
- 2:57Speaker 1: the last Super Bowl, but the one between the Broncos
- 3:00Speaker 1: and the Seahawks.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Ironically, no, not that.
- 3:04Speaker 1: One, the one that the Broncos won with Peyton Manning
- 3:09Speaker 1: and who they beat is escaping me at the moment.
- 3:12Speaker 1: But the one that they won after losing to the
- 3:14Speaker 1: Seahawks the year before was basically Peyton really struggling again
- 3:21Speaker 1: with injuries with his body, and they won that Super
- 3:25Speaker 1: Bowl just handing the ball off, handing the ball. I
- 3:28Speaker 1: was against the Panthers, now, I remember the big fumble
- 3:30Speaker 1: by Cam Newton.
- 3:31Speaker 2: They won it on defense.
- 3:32Speaker 1: It was not vintage Peyton Manning on his second ring
- 3:36Speaker 1: there the way he went out so but here with Stafford.
- 3:39Speaker 2: He's really lighting it up. He's fun to watch.
- 3:42Speaker 1: The Seahawks have been fun to watch, with their defense
- 3:44Speaker 1: very much reminiscent in some ways of the Legion of
- 3:48Speaker 1: Boom defense.
- 3:50Speaker 2: From years ago.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Different but similar in that they are a very punishing,
- 3:54Speaker 1: aggressive defense that can shut down a really good offense
- 3:59Speaker 1: in court. But if they're in the Super Bowl again,
- 4:03Speaker 1: I don't know that it has the same kind of
- 4:05Speaker 1: national or global because the Super Bowl is global. I
- 4:09Speaker 1: don't know that it has the global appeal that it
- 4:12Speaker 1: would ordinarily have if you had the Chiefs in it
- 4:16Speaker 1: who are dynasty, or if you had, you know, a
- 4:19Speaker 1: Josh Allen in it, if you had the Eagles in
- 4:21Speaker 1: it again, if you had maybe Lamar Jackson in it
- 4:25Speaker 1: for the first time. I think that this will be
- 4:27Speaker 1: These are four very really good games that will produce
- 4:31Speaker 1: two really good teams going at it. But and of
- 4:34Speaker 1: course it's the super Bowl, so it will be watched.
- 4:37Speaker 1: But I think it will lack for some of the
- 4:39Speaker 1: great storylines that we have seen in the past, and
- 4:44Speaker 1: lack for some star studdedness that you usually get with
- 4:49Speaker 1: the Super Bowl.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Big names, big name.
- 4:51Speaker 1: In fact, the reality is depending on who wins these games.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Some of the coaches McVeigh, Peyton might.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Be some of the biggest stars in the Super Bowl
- 5:06Speaker 1: and probably will be featured more so than some other
- 5:11Speaker 1: coaches in the Super Bowl, like, for example, Sean Payton.
- 5:14Speaker 1: If he gets to the Super Bowl, he will be
- 5:18Speaker 1: he will have the chance to become the first NFL
- 5:22Speaker 1: coach to win a Super.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Bowl with two different teams. There have been a couple
- 5:28Speaker 2: to take.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Two different teams to a Super Bowl, but nobody has
- 5:33Speaker 1: ever won with two different teams.
- 5:36Speaker 2: I believe. I'm just this is off the top of
- 5:38Speaker 2: my head.
- 5:40Speaker 1: I think the last, well, the last coach I guess
- 5:43Speaker 1: to do it would be Andy Reid because he'd done
- 5:45Speaker 1: it with the Chiefs the last few years, and you know,
- 5:47Speaker 1: he had been to the Super Bowl with the Eagles
- 5:50Speaker 1: before that. I believe was Reed's mentor, Mike Holmgren, who
- 5:55Speaker 1: won it as a Packers head coach and should have
- 5:59Speaker 1: won it as the Seahawks coach when they were in
- 6:03Speaker 1: the Super Bowl against the Steelers.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Two thousand and five. Maybe I know it was Roethlisberger's
- 6:09Speaker 2: second year. It was an ugly game. It was a
- 6:11Speaker 2: terrible Super Bowl for Roethlisberger despite the fact.
- 6:13Speaker 1: That he won it and there was, you know, a
- 6:16Speaker 1: holding call on the Seahawks left tackle that was very controversial.
- 6:20Speaker 1: I think his last name was Locklear. And the point is,
- 6:24Speaker 1: Humgrin had a really, really good chance to make history
- 6:28Speaker 1: there and he fell short. And of course Andy did
- 6:32Speaker 1: not win one in Philadelphia despite getting there, but.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Has won many with the Chiefs, and.
- 6:38Speaker 1: So it would be a big, big storyline if Sean
- 6:44Speaker 1: Peyton was in the Super Bowl and had a chance
- 6:50Speaker 1: to become the first to do that. And knowing Sean
- 6:53Speaker 1: Payton as I've observed from him, I don't know him personally,
- 6:58Speaker 1: may have interviewed him once or twice in a pack somewhere,
- 7:01Speaker 1: but I would think that Sean Payton would relish the
- 7:05Speaker 1: opportunity to not only talk about it, but then go
- 7:09Speaker 1: do it and say that he did it. He is
- 7:11Speaker 1: not a guy who afraid, who hides his emotions, who's
- 7:15Speaker 1: afraid of making bombastic statements. So I have a feeling
- 7:19Speaker 1: if that winds up being a storyline, he will embrace it. Now,
- 7:27Speaker 1: do not let this super Bowl be a matchup, And
- 7:31Speaker 1: I think it might wind up being that way between
- 7:34Speaker 1: Peyton and Sean McVeigh, because I think people will lose
- 7:39Speaker 1: their minds between all the coverage that these two head
- 7:44Speaker 1: coaches get. It will be NonStop. It will be McVeigh
- 7:47Speaker 1: going for his second championship, not with a different team,
- 7:51Speaker 1: the same team, but it will still be McVeigh going
- 7:54Speaker 1: from going for his second championship. And you know that
- 7:57Speaker 1: McVeigh and listen, I like McVeigh too. I think he's
- 7:59Speaker 1: a great coach. So you can say I'm as guilty
- 8:03Speaker 1: as all of them or the rest of them were
- 8:04Speaker 1: the next guy. But yeah, it would be McVeigh going
- 8:08Speaker 1: for his second ring in the last five years, So
- 8:12Speaker 1: that would put him in fairly elite company just having
- 8:16Speaker 1: two Super Bowl rings on his own. If that would
- 8:19Speaker 1: be the case, I think that would that would also
- 8:21Speaker 1: be his third Super Bowl appearance.
- 8:23Speaker 2: So people can make.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Fun of the media, sports writer, sports talk hosts, whatever,
- 8:29Speaker 1: and see people seem to take umbrage or actually people
- 8:33Speaker 1: seem to take delight in crushing sports media for you know,
- 8:40Speaker 1: over glorifying Sean mcvaigh after he had a bad game
- 8:45Speaker 1: against the Bears.
- 8:46Speaker 2: You know what, he did have a bad game.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Guess what, that doesn't make him a bad coach when
- 8:51Speaker 1: other people, especially fellow reporters, go onto Twitter and be like, Oh,
- 8:57Speaker 1: he had a bad game, but you know the media
- 8:59Speaker 1: is gonna tell you he's he's great. Let me say,
- 9:01Speaker 1: give me a guy who has not a bad game.
- 9:05Speaker 1: The guys one went away from being in his third
- 9:08Speaker 1: Super Bowl, He's already won one, probably be the favorite
- 9:12Speaker 1: if he gets to another one, and he has a
- 9:15Speaker 1: bad game against a good team on the road, and
- 9:18Speaker 1: all of a sudden the media just falls in love
- 9:20Speaker 1: with him too much. I mean, come on, who doesn't
- 9:22Speaker 1: have a bad game. Tom Brady's lost Super bowls. Okay,
- 9:26Speaker 1: he's lost conference championship games. The best who have ever
- 9:29Speaker 1: played have bad games, so I think the best who
- 9:31Speaker 1: have ever coached can have bad games as well.
- 9:36Speaker 2: So I don't. I don't use those opportunities to pile on.
- 9:39Speaker 1: And maybe part of that is because I really do
- 9:40Speaker 1: believe Sean McVay is a great coach, and he is.
- 9:43Speaker 1: But you know, when guy, even for guys who I
- 9:45Speaker 1: don't think are awesome, I don't sit there in a
- 9:48Speaker 1: bad moment by the way they won the game and
- 9:51Speaker 1: pile on and say.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Oh, this guy's overrated. He stinks.
- 9:54Speaker 1: See what see. He coached the bad game. Ben Johnson
- 9:57Speaker 1: didn't coach a great game either. By the way, sometimes
- 10:00Speaker 1: it happens you get two good teams going against each other,
- 10:03Speaker 1: you can lose your way, you can.
- 10:05Speaker 2: You know Andy, how many times do we say about
- 10:07Speaker 2: Andy Reid?
- 10:07Speaker 1: He just started passing the ball too much, didn't have
- 10:10Speaker 1: great clock management.
- 10:11Speaker 2: He figured out.
- 10:12Speaker 1: It doesn't make him a terrible coach because he had
- 10:14Speaker 1: bad games along the way.
- 10:16Speaker 2: So I don't know.
- 10:17Speaker 1: I On one hand, I'm telling you guys that if
- 10:20Speaker 1: it winds up being mcveighor of Peyton, you're probably gonna
- 10:23Speaker 1: be vomiting.
- 10:24Speaker 2: From all the coverage that they get. On the other hand,
- 10:26Speaker 2: they deserve it. They're really good at what they do.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Real quick, let's get into the head coaching vacancies around
- 10:34Speaker 1: the league and what's going on. You know, there were
- 10:37Speaker 1: what ten when this all started. A bunch of teams
- 10:40Speaker 1: have filled their vacancies now some some too. I thought
- 10:45Speaker 1: Minter and the Ravens were a perfect match, and I
- 10:49Speaker 1: had a feeling, without knowing anything, that it was headed
- 10:54Speaker 1: in that direction. He was there under John Harball. He
- 10:57Speaker 1: left went to Michigan with Jim Harbor Law followed then
- 11:02Speaker 1: Jim to the Chargers has done an excellent job as
- 11:05Speaker 1: their defensive coordinators. The Ravens to me, because there's such
- 11:10Speaker 1: a stable organization and because they struck on John Harball
- 11:15Speaker 1: wound up being their coach for eighteen years, and they
- 11:17Speaker 1: weren't afraid to hire a special teams coordinator and make
- 11:22Speaker 1: him a head coach. The Ravens to me, they don't
- 11:25Speaker 1: have to follow a template, you know. I think some
- 11:27Speaker 1: teams have to because of the position they're in. Probably
- 11:33Speaker 1: need a guy who might have been a retread. It
- 11:36Speaker 1: might be better for them to have a retread we'll
- 11:38Speaker 1: get into that in a second, or a guy who
- 11:40Speaker 1: has a head coaching experience. The Ravens are a stable
- 11:44Speaker 1: organization with a great scouting staff, a great owner, great stability.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Other It doesn't mean they can't have a lull kid,
- 11:54Speaker 1: doesn't mean they can't make a mistake. But I could
- 11:56Speaker 1: absolutely see them taking a chance on a younger guy
- 12:00Speaker 1: Minter because they had all the information they needed.
- 12:03Speaker 2: He was there in the building for several years.
- 12:06Speaker 1: And then he went and did a great won a
- 12:07Speaker 1: national championship at Michigan, and then he helped assemble one
- 12:11Speaker 1: of the best defenses in the NFL the Chargers in
- 12:14Speaker 1: just two years. So that made a lot of sense
- 12:17Speaker 1: to me. I thought it would lean that way. I
- 12:22Speaker 1: did not expect Tennessee to hire Robert Salad. I think
- 12:25Speaker 1: that was really interesting. I'm very curious to see if Salah,
- 12:31Speaker 1: who did not do a great job with the Jets.
- 12:33Speaker 1: And I know that he was with the Jets and
- 12:35Speaker 1: how bad of an organization they are, but I don't
- 12:38Speaker 1: know that he handled the media really well. The spotlight
- 12:42Speaker 1: the decisions that you have to make as a head
- 12:44Speaker 1: coach about your entire team and your organization, your athletic training.
- 12:50Speaker 1: I mean that you are in charge of so much
- 12:52Speaker 1: as a head coach, not just your side of the ball,
- 12:56Speaker 1: that it is very difficult to really realize that and
- 13:00Speaker 1: grasp that. And then on top of that, you need
- 13:02Speaker 1: a quarterback. And then they missed on the Byu kid
- 13:06Speaker 1: when they were there, and that just forced them to
- 13:08Speaker 1: never really be in the driver's seats.
- 13:10Speaker 2: So we'll see.
- 13:11Speaker 1: He's got cam Ward. Now looks like Dabele will go
- 13:14Speaker 1: there to be his OC. That's not set in stone yet.
- 13:17Speaker 1: We'll see if the second time around he's able to
- 13:19Speaker 1: get the coaches that he wants in there and then
- 13:23Speaker 1: work with have somebody working with the quarterback. It's got
- 13:26Speaker 1: some really good players on defense, Jeffery Simmons being one.
- 13:29Speaker 1: They work pretty decent defensively, and obviously Denard Wilson's not
- 13:32Speaker 1: going to be back there as a defensive coordinator. But
- 13:35Speaker 1: I'm very curious to see how it goes the second
- 13:39Speaker 1: time around with Robert Sala with the Titans, because that's
- 13:42Speaker 1: also an organization that has been pocked by not great
- 13:46Speaker 1: management and ownership over the last few years. Not as
- 13:49Speaker 1: bad as the Jets, but not great, not stable. So
- 13:55Speaker 1: we'll see, if I could. You gotta be careful. Sometimes
- 13:59Speaker 1: guys jump at the next opportunity because there's only thirty
- 14:02Speaker 1: two chances. But I always caution that, not that anybody's
- 14:07Speaker 1: gonna listen to me, but I always think, if you
- 14:10Speaker 1: didn't succeed your first time as a head coach, you
- 14:14Speaker 1: may want to be if you can be, if you're
- 14:17Speaker 1: in that position, a little bit more selective the second time,
- 14:21Speaker 1: because if it failed twice, odds are you're not going
- 14:25Speaker 1: to be a head coach again. Now, it's really hard
- 14:28Speaker 1: to resist the temptation when somebody wants to give you
- 14:31Speaker 1: that job. But again, the Titans are not exactly a
- 14:35Speaker 1: model of stability and they're just stalas coming from the Niners,
- 14:41Speaker 1: which are but before that being a head coach of
- 14:43Speaker 1: the Jets, which is probably one of the least stable organizations.
- 14:48Speaker 1: That's why with Mike McDaniel, who's out there and who
- 14:51Speaker 1: will be the Chargers offensive coordinator if he doesn't.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Get a head head coaching job. I thought it was
- 14:57Speaker 2: smart that.
- 14:58Speaker 1: He pulled out of the Cleveland Brown head coaching job.
- 15:01Speaker 1: I think the Browns and the Raiders have to pay
- 15:06Speaker 1: attacks for being who they are, and we can throw
- 15:09Speaker 1: the Arizona Cardinals in this a little bit too. The
- 15:12Speaker 1: Cardinals are not their ownership is known for being cheap,
- 15:16Speaker 1: but I wouldn't quite call them as.
- 15:19Speaker 2: What's the word I'm looking for?
- 15:21Speaker 1: You know, there's just something about the Browns and the
- 15:23Speaker 1: Raiders where they just can't get there.
- 15:26Speaker 2: You know what, together.
- 15:28Speaker 1: They can have abbreviated years or seasons where things are good.
- 15:32Speaker 1: We know that Kevin Stefanski was twice the NFL Coach
- 15:34Speaker 1: of the Year with the Browns.
- 15:35Speaker 2: It did make some.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Playoff appearances, but when you widen the lens over the
- 15:40Speaker 1: Browns and Raiders for fifteen or so years. There's a
- 15:43Speaker 1: lot more bad seasons than there are goods, and there's
- 15:46Speaker 1: a lot more instability than stability. And we almost never
- 15:49Speaker 1: see these teams make the playoffs two years in a row,
- 15:53Speaker 1: so they have to pay. And then you can throw
- 15:55Speaker 1: the Cardinals in there. I mean they're not quite as bad,
- 15:58Speaker 1: but they're up there for lack of stability. Now the
- 16:02Speaker 1: Raiders at least have the number one pick they're gonna get.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Fernando Mendoza. What an unbelievable story he is. What an
- 16:10Speaker 1: unbelievable job by Indiana to win the National championship. Great game,
- 16:16Speaker 1: great heroic play from Mendoza in a struggle of a game,
- 16:20Speaker 1: by the way, the way that Indiana has won all
- 16:23Speaker 1: a year, basically destroying people, destroying Alabama in that first
- 16:28Speaker 1: or second round game, you know they were taken. They
- 16:32Speaker 1: were given a test by Miami and they passed it.
- 16:34Speaker 1: And Mendoza was unbelievable in the fourth quarter. The touchdown
- 16:38Speaker 1: run just shows you what kind of player he is.
- 16:40Speaker 1: I understand why there are some there is some skepticism
- 16:44Speaker 1: about his upside in the NFL. He's not a bad athlete,
- 16:48Speaker 1: he's got a good arm. Kind of came out of nowhere,
- 16:52Speaker 1: I don't want to say came out of nowhere, but
- 16:54Speaker 1: obviously an amazing year his last year here.
- 16:57Speaker 2: In college football.
- 16:59Speaker 1: And he is the same and obvious choice for the Raiders.
- 17:02Speaker 1: But I do wonder about his just general floor as
- 17:08Speaker 1: an NFL quarterback. But it doesn't matter. The Raiders need
- 17:11Speaker 1: a quarterback. He's the best one. They're gonna take them.
- 17:14Speaker 2: And if you're the head, if you're a prospective head coach.
- 17:17Speaker 1: You know you don't have a whole lot to work
- 17:19Speaker 1: with from our fifty three man standpoint. But you will
- 17:22Speaker 1: have Mendoza, you'll have Gent, You'll hopefully get the left
- 17:27Speaker 1: Tackleton Miller healthy. He's a good player, so that's good
- 17:31Speaker 1: to know. You got Max Crosby on defense, so you
- 17:34Speaker 1: may have about you know, my quick man tells me
- 17:37Speaker 1: forty nine other spots that really need to be filled badly,
- 17:41Speaker 1: give or take. But at least you've got four core
- 17:43Speaker 1: guys there that you probably can start to work with.
- 17:46Speaker 1: And we know Tom Brady is heavily involved. But the
- 17:49Speaker 1: Raiders and the Browns and the Cardinals don't have an
- 17:53Speaker 1: exact fit to me, because they have to pay their rate.
- 17:58Speaker 1: They are gonna have to overpay. They got to give
- 18:00Speaker 1: probably more years on the contract to lure that the
- 18:04Speaker 1: person that they want because they know that most people
- 18:07Speaker 1: go these are these are jobs to get hired to
- 18:09Speaker 1: get fired, all right. So, uh, if the Raiders want
- 18:13Speaker 1: a guy like Nate Schielhouse right from the Rams, really bright, young,
- 18:17Speaker 1: offensive mind, never been a play caller or a head coach,
- 18:21Speaker 1: but bright, bright mind to come in there, uh and
- 18:24Speaker 1: take control of their operation. Because they have the number
- 18:27Speaker 1: one pick quarterback, you know, they may they may need
- 18:30Speaker 1: a guy like that, a Nate Schielhouse, a young guy
- 18:33Speaker 1: who hasn't proved himself yet. Davis Webb from the Broncos.
- 18:37Speaker 1: You know obviously the Raiders GM now John Spytech came
- 18:42Speaker 1: over from the Broncos, so he's got familiarity with them.
- 18:45Speaker 1: But if they want to hire Vance, Joseph Vance, Joseph
- 18:49Speaker 1: Is could probably look and say, I probably will get.
- 18:52Speaker 2: A better opportunity.
- 18:53Speaker 1: This is again again he's a guy looking for his
- 18:55Speaker 1: second head coaching gig didn't go well the first time
- 18:58Speaker 1: around when he was Denver's head coach, so he may
- 19:03Speaker 1: want to be more selective. He may not want to
- 19:05Speaker 1: go to Arizona, where he's also been before. He may
- 19:09Speaker 1: not want to go be the head coach of the Raiders.
- 19:12Speaker 1: He may not want to go be head coach of
- 19:14Speaker 1: the Browns because you know, he may just think second
- 19:17Speaker 1: time around. I got to make sure it's a great environment.
- 19:22Speaker 1: So I'm sure the Steelers would be way more attractive.
- 19:24Speaker 1: I'm sure the Bills would be more attractive, and I
- 19:27Speaker 1: think the feeling would be more mutual as well for
- 19:29Speaker 1: the Bills and the Steelers standpoint. So the Raiders, if
- 19:34Speaker 1: I had to guess, probably a guy like siel Haas,
- 19:37Speaker 1: Probably a guy like Davis Webb. The Cardinals, who knows,
- 19:43Speaker 1: I really, I just I couldn't even begin to tell
- 19:46Speaker 1: you who would they. Again, the quarterback's an issue there.
- 19:49Speaker 1: They're gonna move on from Kyler Murray. They don't have
- 19:52Speaker 1: a top five pick. So their GM has to convince
- 19:55Speaker 1: the head coaching candidate that he's got an excellent plan
- 19:59Speaker 1: and about many Austen Fort, who has not been a
- 20:02Speaker 1: GM that long and doesn't have any track record of success,
- 20:05Speaker 1: he's got to be able to convince a good candidate
- 20:08Speaker 1: to come take this job because he has a plan.
- 20:11Speaker 1: I don't know how that's gonna go. So he also
- 20:14Speaker 1: may have to he being Austin Fort and the Cardinals
- 20:18Speaker 1: may all also have to get a first time head coach.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Maybe they wait on Clint Kubiak, the offensive coordinator for
- 20:24Speaker 1: the Seahawks. All right, maybe they say, you know what
- 20:29Speaker 1: we need. We just need something better, and let's go
- 20:32Speaker 1: after Matt Nagy, because Naggy kind of got left at
- 20:35Speaker 1: the altar by the Titans, probably thought he had that job.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Let's let's talk to him. We'll see a Giro Evro
- 20:42Speaker 1: good defensive coordinator there. So it might have to be
- 20:47Speaker 1: a first time guy, Joe Brady something like that. Because
- 20:52Speaker 1: guys who are looking to win and win now, are
- 20:54Speaker 1: in their second go around as a head coach and
- 20:57Speaker 1: want a better environment are not going to find those
- 21:00Speaker 1: jobs as attractive. Doesn't mean they can't wind up hiring
- 21:04Speaker 1: somebody good.
- 21:05Speaker 2: You know.
- 21:06Speaker 1: The Rams are a good example here I go talking
- 21:08Speaker 1: about McVeigh again. They took a chance on Sean McVay
- 21:11Speaker 1: and it really worked out. Okay, nine times out of ten.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Doesn't always happen that way, but they had great intel.
- 21:18Speaker 1: They knew he was smart, he was the guy around
- 21:20Speaker 1: the league, kind of like sheelhouse is now and you
- 21:24Speaker 1: take that chance and it works out. But those teams
- 21:27Speaker 1: will clearly have to be able to build and convince
- 21:29Speaker 1: the next candidate that they have a good plan. I
- 21:34Speaker 1: was somewhat shocked, not totally, but a little bit shocked
- 21:38Speaker 1: at the way the Bills went about firing Sean McDermott.
- 21:41Speaker 2: I get it, you know, they.
- 21:43Speaker 1: Hadn't gotten past the point they want to get. But
- 21:46Speaker 1: you know, you watch the press conference, which was a
- 21:48Speaker 1: total clown show, and I've heard nothing. I've heard nice
- 21:51Speaker 1: things about Tom Pagoula, the owner, but I mean the
- 21:54Speaker 1: way he just rolled the bus over not only McDermott,
- 21:58Speaker 1: but then Keon Coleman. If you guys haven't seen this
- 22:01Speaker 1: press conference, it is a masterclass in what not to
- 22:06Speaker 1: say when you're the owner of an NFL franchise publicly,
- 22:11Speaker 1: all right, have those conversations behind closed door. Now this kid,
- 22:15Speaker 1: and listen. Keon Coleman has brought some of this on
- 22:17Speaker 1: himself by just not being mature and ready to play
- 22:21Speaker 1: in the NFL as a second round pick. But there's
- 22:25Speaker 1: no help whatsoever in having the bus rolled over your back.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Time and time.
- 22:30Speaker 1: Again, the Eagles did not do that to Jalen Rager
- 22:33Speaker 1: when Riger was really struggling as a first round pick
- 22:35Speaker 1: to carve a rollout and become an NFL player.
- 22:39Speaker 2: They never said anything.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Incriminating or damning like that, or throwing him under the
- 22:44Speaker 1: bus like that.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Not at all.
- 22:46Speaker 1: They supported him, so you're supposed to do so. And
- 22:50Speaker 1: then for the Bills to interview, for the Bills to
- 22:54Speaker 1: interview Philip Rivers because he's close with Josh Allen listen,
- 23:00Speaker 1: I don't mind kicking the tires. I don't mind doing
- 23:03Speaker 1: casting a wide net. But again, there is so much
- 23:08Speaker 1: more to being an NFL head coach than being a
- 23:12Speaker 1: good play caller or being a guy who can challenge
- 23:15Speaker 1: a quarterback. Those are important, but you have to decide
- 23:18Speaker 1: everything that goes on. Who's your defensive coordinator, who's your
- 23:23Speaker 1: linebacker's coach or are you gonna pick a good enough
- 23:26Speaker 1: defensive coordinator that that guy can round out his staff?
- 23:29Speaker 1: Who's your quality control, who's your head trainer, who's your
- 23:32Speaker 1: assistant trainer? What's your practice schedule? Gonna be like, okay,
- 23:37Speaker 1: we kind of what are your core fundamental philosophies as
- 23:40Speaker 1: a coach? I know he's been coaching high school. That's great,
- 23:43Speaker 1: that's not the NFL, all right, I mean, Doug Peterson
- 23:46Speaker 1: coach high school. But then at least he went to
- 23:48Speaker 1: go coach under Andy Reid before becoming the Eagles head coach.
- 23:51Speaker 1: He did spend a few years on Reid's staff. You
- 23:55Speaker 1: have to know a franchise inside and out, everything you
- 23:58Speaker 1: can control, and control who's.
- 24:01Speaker 2: Going to run your draft.
- 24:02Speaker 1: You know, you got to be able to work with
- 24:04Speaker 1: the GM. So for Philip Rivers to just walk into
- 24:07Speaker 1: a situation like that and become an NFL head coach,
- 24:12Speaker 1: that's a tough call. Now, it makes sense to interview
- 24:15Speaker 1: him and if you want to be if they wanted
- 24:17Speaker 1: him to be the OC or the quarterback coach, I
- 24:19Speaker 1: could see it.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Pass game coordinator. Sure, I think a lot of that
- 24:22Speaker 2: makes sense.
- 24:23Speaker 1: But there's just so much involved with running a franchise
- 24:27Speaker 1: when you're going to be an NFL head coach that
- 24:29Speaker 1: if you have zero NFL coaching experience, and I mean
- 24:34Speaker 1: not head coaching, I mean you've never been an assistant,
- 24:38Speaker 1: a position.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Coach, a quality control coach, I.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Think that's really really difficult. I think it almost undermines
- 24:46Speaker 1: the profession a little bit. And look, maybe he's just
- 24:49Speaker 1: naturally a great coach. Who knows I know that if
- 24:52Speaker 1: you remember this was done before by the Colts when
- 24:56Speaker 1: the Lake Jimier say fired I think it was Frank
- 25:00Speaker 1: and he just said, hey, Jeff Saturday, come coach.
- 25:02Speaker 2: My NFL team.
- 25:04Speaker 1: Right, I don't think Saturday was very successful, and then
- 25:07Speaker 1: he didn't get the job obviously. After that, it's just
- 25:11Speaker 1: more responsibility than you think. It's not just go coach
- 25:16Speaker 1: your starting lineup. Okay, you need to make sure that
- 25:19Speaker 1: your practice squad is full. I mean, yes, your GM
- 25:23Speaker 1: takes care of a lot of that, but the GM
- 25:25Speaker 1: is basically someone who works alongside the head coach and
- 25:28Speaker 1: needs the head coach's input. What schemes do you want
- 25:31Speaker 1: to run? What do you want me to What kind
- 25:32Speaker 1: of players do you want me to find not only
- 25:34Speaker 1: on the fifty three but also the practice squad for
- 25:37Speaker 1: the kind of scheme you want to run? What tone
- 25:40Speaker 1: are you setting? How can I help you as a GM?
- 25:43Speaker 1: You have to know all that, And to think that
- 25:46Speaker 1: a guy like Philip Rivers has all of this, I
- 25:50Speaker 1: mean I remember the stories of Andy Reid impressing Jeffrey
- 25:54Speaker 1: Lourie and Joe Banner because he came to his interview
- 25:57Speaker 1: with something that resembled like a Bible of notes and
- 26:02Speaker 1: a mission statement. You have to have a coaching mission,
- 26:04Speaker 1: state mission, state mission statement. Pretty Much every coach I've
- 26:08Speaker 1: ever talked to has done that. I mean, they compile
- 26:10Speaker 1: that in their free time when they can. That basically
- 26:13Speaker 1: outlines their philosophies, their scheme, what coaches, what they look
- 26:19Speaker 1: for and coaches, what specific names of coaches they would
- 26:22Speaker 1: want to coach with them, how they would reshape practice,
- 26:25Speaker 1: how they would reshape the training staff, how they would
- 26:29Speaker 1: work the regimen of off from OTAs to training camp
- 26:33Speaker 1: to the time that you're practicing.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Traveling everything.
- 26:38Speaker 1: It's exhausting and comprehensive, and you have to have to
- 26:41Speaker 1: have sat down and had all of that. And I
- 26:44Speaker 1: don't know whether Philip Rivers has or hasn't. Maybe maybe
- 26:47Speaker 1: he has, but I still think you have to have
- 26:49Speaker 1: all of that that is a compilation of your experiences
- 26:54Speaker 1: as an NFL head coach to be able to present
- 26:57Speaker 1: that to an owner. I mean, Philip River can have
- 27:00Speaker 1: a one hundred page manuscript on it, but how does
- 27:03Speaker 1: he really know if he hasn't even done it at
- 27:05Speaker 1: any of those understudy levels, rising up a chain before
- 27:11Speaker 1: you get the head coach. So I don't think there's
- 27:13Speaker 1: anything wrong with the interview. I'm not saying the Bills
- 27:15Speaker 1: are idiots. I'm not saying Rivers is an idiot. I
- 27:18Speaker 1: mean I think this is the right way to at
- 27:20Speaker 1: least get information and the right way for Rivers to
- 27:22Speaker 1: get his foot in the door and show people that.
- 27:24Speaker 2: He's truly serious.
- 27:25Speaker 1: But if he gets a head coaching job, I would
- 27:28Speaker 1: have some serious, serious questions about the direction of that franchise.
- 27:35Speaker 2: I do think that the Bills would be wise to listen.
- 27:38Speaker 1: They don't have to hire an offensive coach, but they're
- 27:42Speaker 1: obviously they've got a lot of work to do on
- 27:44Speaker 1: both offense and defense. They just need a good listen,
- 27:48Speaker 1: a good program builder. I mean, the program's there. I
- 27:52Speaker 1: thought McDermott had done an excellent job. They need somebody
- 27:55Speaker 1: to get him over the hump. So it would probably
- 27:58Speaker 1: make sense to me for the Bills to look for
- 28:01Speaker 1: someone who has prior head coaching experience if they're built
- 28:05Speaker 1: to win. And you heard the owner say, I made
- 28:07Speaker 1: this decision basically when we lost the playoff game to
- 28:11Speaker 1: the Broncos, which you know, kind of shows you that
- 28:14Speaker 1: the owner probably made I'm not saying he shouldn't have
- 28:17Speaker 1: done it, but it sounds a little hasty when you
- 28:19Speaker 1: make that decision right then and there instead of giving
- 28:21Speaker 1: yourself the proverbial twenty four to forty eight hours to
- 28:25Speaker 1: think about it. So I'm very interested if they based
- 28:29Speaker 1: on what the owner said, it feels like the Bills
- 28:31Speaker 1: should try to hire a guy who has previous head
- 28:35Speaker 1: coaching experience, whether it's Mike McDaniel, whether it's Van Sjosa,
- 28:41Speaker 1: maybe Matt Naggy.
- 28:43Speaker 2: We'll see Dable.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Obviously they're going to talk to, We'll say, as opposed
- 28:48Speaker 1: to trying to find, you know, the diamond and the
- 28:51Speaker 1: rough coordinator who could potentially take them backward.
- 28:56Speaker 2: And of course.
- 28:59Speaker 1: I'm really captivated by the st I think the Steelers
- 29:01Speaker 1: are like the Ravens. The Steelers have an unbelievable process.
- 29:06Speaker 1: They don't hire and fire coaches easily. They really take
- 29:10Speaker 1: their time. They've went from you know, basically, if I'm
- 29:14Speaker 1: not mistaken Noel to Bill Cower to Mike Tomlin. I mean,
- 29:20Speaker 1: that is unbelievable. But it's not just because they've hired
- 29:24Speaker 1: good coaches. It's because these coaches have had great scouting
- 29:30Speaker 1: in front offices. Okay, I mean they're handed. I don't
- 29:33Speaker 1: want to say they're handed good teams, but they've helped
- 29:35Speaker 1: build really good teams. So it's very rare that a
- 29:39Speaker 1: Steelers team does not have, you know, an excellent cores
- 29:45Speaker 1: at least an excellent corps. I mean, when you can
- 29:48Speaker 1: go from Noel to Cower Tomlin. They've had three coaches
- 29:51Speaker 1: head coaches since the start of nineteen sixty nine. That
- 29:54Speaker 1: is unbelievable. I'm miss seeing Mike Tomlin legal see if
- 29:58Speaker 1: he resurfaces ever again. But he was a damn good coach.
- 30:01Speaker 1: So now the Steelers to me are the type of team.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Now there's two things you got to know about the Steelers,
- 30:06Speaker 1: all right. One, they truly value somebody who understands their city,
- 30:13Speaker 1: their football culture, and what it's like to be in
- 30:17Speaker 1: charge of the Western Pennsylvania the team from Western PA
- 30:20Speaker 1: that has a lot of national following, a lot of
- 30:22Speaker 1: Steelers fans all over the place. I have talked about
- 30:25Speaker 1: this before on Inside the Birds podcast and on this show.
- 30:29Speaker 1: The Steelers are very unique with their front office. They
- 30:32Speaker 1: tend to have a lot of guys in their front
- 30:34Speaker 1: office who are from Pittsburgh. Kevin Colbert, their former GM,
- 30:38Speaker 1: was a Pittsburgh guy. Brandon Hunt, who used to work
- 30:40Speaker 1: there before he went to the Eagles and now he's
- 30:42Speaker 1: with the Raiders, is a Pittsburgh guy. They've had other
- 30:47Speaker 1: Pittsburgh guys. They've had some ruonies working in the front office. Okay,
- 30:52Speaker 1: so they are really big on having guys who know
- 30:59Speaker 1: the region. The Andy Whitel, who was first with Baltimore,
- 31:02Speaker 1: then under Howie Rosen with the Eagles, and now with
- 31:05Speaker 1: the Steelers. I know he's interviewing with the Falcons for
- 31:07Speaker 1: their GM job, but he is second to the GM
- 31:10Speaker 1: in Pittsburgh.
- 31:11Speaker 2: He is from Pittsburgh.
- 31:13Speaker 1: They value it. They play a certain way. They don't
- 31:16Speaker 1: want to deviate. They know they have to win cold weather,
- 31:20Speaker 1: slobber knocker type games against the Ravens, especially every November
- 31:26Speaker 1: and December, so they're not a finesse team. They want
- 31:30Speaker 1: to find that defensive minded coach or an offensive coach
- 31:34Speaker 1: who's kind of a smash mouth type of guy. So
- 31:38Speaker 1: it's not surprising to me that they're interviewing Mike McCarthy.
- 31:41Speaker 1: He is from Western Pennsylvania. He's a Pittsburgh guy. He
- 31:44Speaker 1: is an offensive coach, but he likes to play the
- 31:47Speaker 1: West Coast off. He likes two tight ends, he likes
- 31:49Speaker 1: to run the ball. We know that he likes offensive balance.
- 31:52Speaker 1: That's the kind of guy that they would look for.
- 31:55Speaker 1: But I still think that they're looking for someone to
- 31:57Speaker 1: be their next Noles Tomlin slash Cower and be there
- 32:03Speaker 1: for a decade or two. And I'm not sure at
- 32:06Speaker 1: this point Mike McCarthy is that guy. He's not the
- 32:10Speaker 1: oldest guy in the world, Mike McCarthy, but he's not young.
- 32:14Speaker 1: This is not a guy who's going to grow and
- 32:17Speaker 1: grow and grow. I mean, he's won a Super Bowl,
- 32:19Speaker 1: He's won all double digit games quite a bit. You know,
- 32:22Speaker 1: he's sixty two, So could he coach till he's seventy?
- 32:25Speaker 1: Could he coach for a decade till seventy two?
- 32:27Speaker 2: Maybe?
- 32:28Speaker 1: I'm guessing that's why he's getting consideration. The guy's got
- 32:32Speaker 1: a ton of wins. He's got a sixty one percent
- 32:35Speaker 1: winning percentage. He has one hundred and seventy four wins,
- 32:39Speaker 1: won a Super Bowl. So he's got the credentials and
- 32:42Speaker 1: he could probably do a pretty good job in Pittsburgh.
- 32:45Speaker 1: But the problem is they don't have a quarterback either.
- 32:48Speaker 1: They really have to fair and even if Aaron Rodgers
- 32:50Speaker 1: comes back, they don't have a future quarterback. So I
- 32:53Speaker 1: would think that these Steelers are going to be taking
- 32:56Speaker 1: a look at some younger candidates that they will fit
- 33:01Speaker 1: the culture of the city. Now, I don't know who's
- 33:04Speaker 1: from western Pennsylvania. I'm not saying they have to hire
- 33:06Speaker 1: a guy from Pittsburgh. I was just giving you some
- 33:09Speaker 1: enlightenment into what they look for in the fact that
- 33:12Speaker 1: they have so many Pittsburgh based guys in their front office.
- 33:17Speaker 1: But if you if I had to guess in what
- 33:21Speaker 1: direction they would go for a head coaching candidate, I
- 33:25Speaker 1: would guess younger than Mike McCarthy and either defensive oriented
- 33:31Speaker 1: like maybe Vance Joseph or maybe.
- 33:38Speaker 2: Is Zero Evro.
- 33:39Speaker 1: Perhaps or they get a guy who is an offensive
- 33:44Speaker 1: guy but likes to run. Maybe they're waiting for Clint
- 33:46Speaker 1: Kubiak the Seahawks oc all right, Maybe they look for
- 33:52Speaker 1: Joe Brady, who did an excellent job with the run
- 33:55Speaker 1: game in Buffalo. Maybe Clay Kubiak, who is a branch
- 34:01Speaker 1: of the Obviously the Shanahan Tree.
- 34:05Speaker 2: Would be very interesting to see who they go with.
- 34:09Speaker 1: And it's going to be a huge decision for the
- 34:11Speaker 1: trajectory of that franchise.
- 34:14Speaker 2: All right, And that's obviously the deal.
- 34:16Speaker 1: With the head coaches coordinators.
- 34:19Speaker 2: We'll get to the games here.
- 34:21Speaker 1: The first game Sunday, three o'clock Patriots at Broncos. The
- 34:26Speaker 1: Patriots are three and a half point favorites, and that's
- 34:28Speaker 1: basically because the Broncos are on their backup quarterback Jared Stidham.
- 34:32Speaker 2: Now Stidham is listen.
- 34:36Speaker 1: That was one of the first moves that Peyton made
- 34:39Speaker 1: when he took over the team was getting Jared Stidham.
- 34:43Speaker 1: So he has worked with Stidham for.
- 34:45Speaker 2: A while now.
- 34:47Speaker 1: And I don't think Stidham is going to be a
- 34:52Speaker 1: total failure here. I think that Peyton's going to design
- 34:55Speaker 1: an offense that cater's to his strengths. He doesn't have
- 34:58Speaker 1: the greatest arm. He's not a power arm guy, but
- 35:00Speaker 1: he's generally accurate. He doesn't have the athletic mobility and
- 35:08Speaker 1: motions that bon Nicks had, and that's really what helped
- 35:11Speaker 1: bon Nicks win fifteen I'm sorry, fourteen games, well fifteen
- 35:14Speaker 1: if you count the last one. But he's not a
- 35:18Speaker 1: guy who's Stidham, who's just clueless out there and has
- 35:22Speaker 1: never played and is going to fall over himself. I
- 35:26Speaker 1: don't see that being the case. I think that the
- 35:29Speaker 1: offensive staff of the Broncos is too good to allow
- 35:33Speaker 1: that to happen. He's been in the system now since
- 35:37Speaker 1: twenty twenty three, which is basically I believe the year
- 35:40Speaker 1: Peyton took over there. Like I said, it was one
- 35:42Speaker 1: of the first moves was to bring him because he
- 35:44Speaker 1: was He was first with New England, then he was
- 35:47Speaker 1: out of the league I think, then or his injuried
- 35:49Speaker 1: I think, and then he popped up with the Raiders
- 35:51Speaker 1: for a little bit. He's only played in started four games.
- 35:54Speaker 1: He's played in twenty so this is obviously a.
- 35:59Speaker 2: Huge for him.
- 36:00Speaker 1: But the Broncos have been able to win games this year,
- 36:04Speaker 1: even in games where Nicks has not played particularly well.
- 36:08Speaker 1: Nicks got better as the season went on, but he
- 36:10Speaker 1: had some horrific games first half of the year, so
- 36:14Speaker 1: I imagine that they will run the ball. We'll see
- 36:18Speaker 1: what the deal is with Dobbins. I know he was
- 36:20Speaker 1: in the practice window. I don't know if he's going
- 36:23Speaker 1: to be able to play. Actually I think he's out.
- 36:26Speaker 1: But either way, I think they're going to run the
- 36:27Speaker 1: ball with Harvey as much as they can. They're going
- 36:30Speaker 1: to try to control the line of scrimmage. They're going
- 36:32Speaker 1: to try to use the short game, the quick game,
- 36:36Speaker 1: and listen, if they have to win ugly. The Broncos
- 36:38Speaker 1: know that they can win ugly. Now they're facing a
- 36:42Speaker 1: Patriots team that has really passed a lot of tests.
- 36:48Speaker 1: I mean, I was concerned that they were one of
- 36:51Speaker 1: the playoff teams at the start of the playoff that
- 36:53Speaker 1: had the lowest strength of win. They were one of
- 36:57Speaker 1: those teams that kind of got fat on being kind
- 36:59Speaker 1: of reminded me a little bit of the twenty seventeen Eagles.
- 37:02Speaker 1: Just beat a bunch of bad teams. But guess what,
- 37:04Speaker 1: when the playoffs came, it didn't matter because they look great.
- 37:08Speaker 1: And obviously the Patriots I thought, I think I said
- 37:12Speaker 1: this last show, they've.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Won two games being uncomfortable.
- 37:16Speaker 1: They had to play a Chargers defense that was very good,
- 37:18Speaker 1: got them out of their comfort zone. It was close
- 37:20Speaker 1: for three quarters, won the game all right. Then last
- 37:23Speaker 1: week you gotta go play another good defense, win the
- 37:27Speaker 1: game all right now they've got Now they've got you know,
- 37:32Speaker 1: the Broncos. They're probably gonna wind up playing the best
- 37:34Speaker 1: defenses in the League's here in back to back where
- 37:37Speaker 1: you go from Chargers defense, Texans defense, which I thought
- 37:42Speaker 1: was the best in the league, to Broncos defense, which
- 37:44Speaker 1: could make its cleim as best in the league.
- 37:46Speaker 2: But the Patriots have defeated both and now they're gonna
- 37:50Speaker 2: go in Denver.
- 37:51Speaker 1: Now you worry about altitude, how that might affect them
- 37:54Speaker 1: a little bit. That's obviously a huge advantage for the Broncos.
- 38:00Speaker 1: The big thing is this, there's two big things about
- 38:02Speaker 1: the Patriots. They've played excellent defense lately. All right, Milton
- 38:07Speaker 1: Williams has really stepped up in that front seven, like
- 38:09Speaker 1: you knew he would after he left the Eagles. They
- 38:13Speaker 1: get good cornerback play out of Christian Gozalez. They're getting
- 38:16Speaker 1: good pressure, so they can make it a little ugly
- 38:20Speaker 1: for the Broncos offense.
- 38:22Speaker 2: The issue that I have is that the Patriots have.
- 38:24Speaker 1: Been turning the ball over quite a bit throughout the playoffs,
- 38:27Speaker 1: and I don't think that they can survive if they
- 38:30Speaker 1: keep turning the ball over like that against the Broncos.
- 38:32Speaker 1: You can't give really good teams extra possessions in the playoffs.
- 38:40Speaker 1: You just can't do it.
- 38:41Speaker 2: Even a Broncos team with a backup quarterback, you can't
- 38:45Speaker 2: do that.
- 38:46Speaker 1: And if the Patriots continue to be sloppy with the football,
- 38:49Speaker 1: and if May has thrown interceptions, are fumbling or Ramandre Stevenson,
- 38:53Speaker 1: who's always good to put it on the ground every
- 38:56Speaker 1: you know, ten or eleven carries, all right, if they
- 38:58Speaker 1: do that, d'ur in trump. Okay, if they lose the
- 39:01Speaker 1: turnover battle, they think they're gonna lose the game. So
- 39:05Speaker 1: it's gonna be a Really it's gonna be.
- 39:06Speaker 2: Who protects the ball better, who.
- 39:09Speaker 1: Comes up, who comes through on third down better. In
- 39:12Speaker 1: that regard, you'd probably favor the Patriots. I think the
- 39:14Speaker 1: Broncos are gonna have to be ahead of schedule. They're
- 39:17Speaker 1: gonna play ahead of the sticks. They can't have too
- 39:20Speaker 1: many negative plays, can't have too many zero yard plays,
- 39:24Speaker 1: can't take too many sacks, can't have penalties because you're
- 39:27Speaker 1: putting Stidham in that position where he's behind the sticks,
- 39:31Speaker 1: it's not gonna be good.
- 39:33Speaker 2: All right.
- 39:34Speaker 1: One of the best things when Nick Foles took over
- 39:35Speaker 1: for the Eagles after wins, after looking lousy in the
- 39:39Speaker 1: last two games of the regular season, gutting out a
- 39:42Speaker 1: win against Atlanta, then huge games against the Vikings and
- 39:45Speaker 1: the Patriots. Is they were caught, they would ran the
- 39:47Speaker 1: ball really well. You know, you had a Jaie and
- 39:51Speaker 1: you had blunt, you were able to move the chains
- 39:53Speaker 1: with zach Ertz. I mean, they were just methodically able
- 39:56Speaker 1: to move the ball, and then they would strike it big,
- 39:59Speaker 1: you know, the big big the fleet flickers, right, you
- 40:02Speaker 1: have Tory Smith and you're getting al Sean Deep. Those
- 40:04Speaker 1: all come after you move the ball with the.
- 40:07Speaker 2: Run game really well. And that's why I think the
- 40:09Speaker 2: Broncos will try to do that.
- 40:10Speaker 1: They have to stay ahead of schedule, the Broncos to
- 40:15Speaker 1: have a chance, and if they can pop a big
- 40:17Speaker 1: play here and there, probably not gonna happen too much,
- 40:20Speaker 1: but if they can, that'll benefit them. The Patriots, they
- 40:23Speaker 1: have lived all year long on the shot play, on
- 40:28Speaker 1: the big pop play, and there has been a I'm
- 40:30Speaker 1: telling you, the May to Steph Diggs connection has been really,
- 40:33Speaker 1: really potent. And May is not afraid to throw this
- 40:37Speaker 1: ball in the tight windows. And he's gonna have to
- 40:39Speaker 1: because those guys on the Broncos in the front seven
- 40:42Speaker 1: can come at you very very quickly. Benito is great,
- 40:47Speaker 1: Cooper's great, Franklin Meyer's good, Zach Allen's good. I mean
- 40:50Speaker 1: they got horses, and then of course they have great
- 40:52Speaker 1: players in the secondary.
- 40:53Speaker 2: I don't think this game. The total is forty two
- 40:56Speaker 2: and a half.
- 40:56Speaker 1: I think that's right about right, and it would not
- 40:58Speaker 1: surprise me if it was played under forty two and
- 41:01Speaker 1: a half.
- 41:01Speaker 2: This could be.
- 41:02Speaker 1: This to me, has got like, you know, twenty seventeen
- 41:06Speaker 1: type of finish to it. I just I just don't
- 41:09Speaker 1: see either team if it gets out of hand. It's
- 41:12Speaker 1: because the Broncos just couldn't compete with the backup quarterback.
- 41:16Speaker 1: The Patriots took advantage of maybe some turnovers turn them
- 41:19Speaker 1: into easy touchdowns, hit a deep one here or there
- 41:22Speaker 1: that you weren't expecting because the Broncos defense was asked
- 41:25Speaker 1: to be too much. I don't think that's gonna happen.
- 41:27Speaker 1: But if there's a blowout, it's gonna be on the
- 41:29Speaker 1: Patriots side. I think it's gonna be close. I think
- 41:32Speaker 1: it'll be a really close game. No surprise. The Patriots
- 41:35Speaker 1: are three and a half way favorites. That shows you
- 41:37Speaker 1: gets close even though they're on the road. It'll be interesting.
- 41:40Speaker 1: I would have loved to know what the line would
- 41:42Speaker 1: have been if Nicks was playing in the game.
- 41:44Speaker 2: I suspect the Broncos would have been favored. I don't know.
- 41:47Speaker 1: Both teams were fourteen and three would have been obviously
- 41:51Speaker 1: in Denver, and like I said, that's a huge advantage
- 41:53Speaker 1: for the Broncos when they're at home. The six thirty
- 41:56Speaker 1: game Rams Seahawks and listen. I heard some people talking
- 42:01Speaker 1: about this on a podcast, and they're probably right. I
- 42:04Speaker 1: don't know in the recent twenty or thirty year history
- 42:09Speaker 1: of the NFL if there has been a three game series,
- 42:13Speaker 1: meaning to you know, two division rivals who played each
- 42:16Speaker 1: other really well and tightly during the regular season and
- 42:19Speaker 1: both were awesome teams, and then they met in the
- 42:22Speaker 1: conference championship game. There have been some really good Eagles.
- 42:25Speaker 2: Giants games throughout the years. Three game series? Is there?
- 42:31Speaker 2: Not so much with the Cowboys.
- 42:32Speaker 1: I know they played the Cowboys in twenty ten, but
- 42:35Speaker 1: those were lopsided games that were not good for the Eagles.
- 42:38Speaker 1: Maybe back in the day there were some few. There
- 42:41Speaker 1: probably could have been a few but in general it's
- 42:45Speaker 1: hard to find. I remember Seahawks Niners NFC championship game
- 42:50Speaker 1: the year I think twenty thirteen, and that was when
- 42:55Speaker 1: Seattle won the NFC Championship game, and I heard Richard
- 43:00Speaker 1: Sherman crowing at the end of the game about Michael
- 43:03Speaker 1: Krabtree being a sorry receiver and had to shut him down.
- 43:07Speaker 1: And I think he had a big pass breakup in
- 43:09Speaker 1: that game against Crabtree. But I don't remember how the
- 43:13Speaker 1: regular season games between those two went. This Ram Seahawks
- 43:17Speaker 1: series has been absolutely fantastic from start to finish, and
- 43:23Speaker 1: this one has all the makings of another just another
- 43:27Speaker 1: great one. You know, if you look at the two
- 43:29Speaker 1: games that played in the regular season, the Seahawks won
- 43:34Speaker 1: thirty eight to thirty seven in Week sixteen. That was
- 43:38Speaker 1: an amazing, amazing game, a huge comeback win for the Seahawks,
- 43:42Speaker 1: really sparked by a punt return touchdown from Shaheed that
- 43:47Speaker 1: cleared the way for a Rams implosion. And then when
- 43:51Speaker 1: they met in Week eleven, the Rams won the game
- 43:56Speaker 1: twenty one nineteen, and I believe that I think Myers
- 44:01Speaker 1: might have missed.
- 44:02Speaker 2: A field goal in that game. If I'm not mistaken
- 44:05Speaker 2: the kicker for.
- 44:06Speaker 1: The The kicker for the Seahawks might have missed a
- 44:12Speaker 1: field goal in that game. I don't know if it
- 44:13Speaker 1: was the last play of the game, I don't remember. Yeah, yeah,
- 44:16Speaker 1: he missed a sixty one yard fueld goal with one
- 44:20Speaker 1: set with as time expired. So talk about two freaking
- 44:23Speaker 1: amazing games. And now these teams meet in the NFC
- 44:27Speaker 1: Championship Game, chance to go to the Super Bowl. Can't
- 44:30Speaker 1: really ask for anything more. Love the coaching matchup. You
- 44:33Speaker 1: got two guys who were Coach of the Year candidates.
- 44:35Speaker 1: McVeigh for his offense, Mike McDonald for his defense. McDonald
- 44:39Speaker 1: will probably he should be coach of the.
- 44:41Speaker 2: Year, to be honest.
- 44:42Speaker 1: He did an amazing job with that defense and just
- 44:44Speaker 1: that overall team. And remember it was his decision to
- 44:47Speaker 1: move on from his offensive coordinator after one year and
- 44:50Speaker 1: then bring in Clint Kubiak, who's done a great job
- 44:52Speaker 1: as the offensive coordinator.
- 44:54Speaker 2: So really truly.
- 44:55Speaker 1: A great coaching job top to bottom. Now, remember this,
- 44:59Speaker 1: the Seahawk lost Zach Charbonne, their second running back, to
- 45:04Speaker 1: an injury. He's out and their left tackle is gonna play,
- 45:08Speaker 1: but he's been beat up they're not. It's not playing
- 45:11Speaker 1: great and he's gonna have to go up against Jared
- 45:13Speaker 1: versus a lot. So that is certainly Charles Cross. Something
- 45:16Speaker 1: to watch when you're watching the trenches is how Charles
- 45:19Speaker 1: Cross plays. I know he's able to practice and he
- 45:22Speaker 1: was cleared and I think he's off the injury report,
- 45:25Speaker 1: but he's been battling something. So we'll just be interesting
- 45:28Speaker 1: to watch. And the loss of charbon Ay. You know,
- 45:31Speaker 1: they've had a really they've had They've struggled to run
- 45:34Speaker 1: at times this year. At times they did a good
- 45:37Speaker 1: job in the Rams game or no, the Niners game.
- 45:39Speaker 1: They were able to resurrect it when they played them
- 45:41Speaker 1: in the season finale with the number one seed on
- 45:43Speaker 1: the line. It's a nice one two combo and Sharbona
- 45:47Speaker 1: is good in pass protection and blitz pick up. So
- 45:50Speaker 1: the Rams don't blitz a lot, but they have at time.
- 45:53Speaker 1: They certainly did against the Eagles more so than we thought.
- 45:56Speaker 1: They find times that they think are really good to
- 46:00Speaker 1: send pressure. And I guarantee you Krashua, the defensive coordinator
- 46:04Speaker 1: for the Rams, We'll look at this and say, I
- 46:06Speaker 1: may have some more opportunities to pressure Sam Darnold, who
- 46:10Speaker 1: himself is dealing with a bad oblique to the point
- 46:14Speaker 1: where he hasn't been taking full practice reps for a
- 46:16Speaker 1: couple of weeks.
- 46:17Speaker 2: Right, I may.
- 46:19Speaker 1: Find time to dial up some pressures and take advantage
- 46:23Speaker 1: of the fact that their best running back in blitz
- 46:26Speaker 1: pick up is not in the game.
- 46:28Speaker 2: And if you're in a game.
- 46:29Speaker 1: Like this that's probably going to be decided by three
- 46:32Speaker 1: or less, like the first two.
- 46:33Speaker 2: Games this year, any little advantage helps.
- 46:39Speaker 1: The Seahawks are playing fantastically, but I don't think the
- 46:42Speaker 1: Rams obviously will be scared. I mean, Stafford certainly won't be.
- 46:46Speaker 1: They run the ball really well with Kyrien Williams and
- 46:49Speaker 1: Blake Korum. You know, I was looking for more DeVante
- 46:51Speaker 1: Adams in that Chicago game. He made a huge, huge
- 46:55Speaker 1: catch in the fourth quarter, a sliding catch while he
- 46:58Speaker 1: was going out of bounds but just kept self inbounds.
- 47:00Speaker 1: I think that was either the third or fourth down
- 47:02Speaker 1: catch that wound up playing a big role. I'd like
- 47:05Speaker 1: to see him play a bigger.
- 47:06Speaker 2: Role in this game for the Rams. We'll see.
- 47:09Speaker 1: Interestingly, the Rams played more eleven personnel against the Bears.
- 47:14Speaker 1: They had been playing thirteen personnel out the wazoo. They
- 47:17Speaker 1: have been playing tight ends like crazy. They must have
- 47:20Speaker 1: seen something in what the Bears were doing defensively to
- 47:24Speaker 1: decide they were gonna play a lot more eleven personnel,
- 47:26Speaker 1: plus having DeVonta Adams back. Of course you're gonna do
- 47:29Speaker 1: that as well. I thought maybe more twelve, but they
- 47:31Speaker 1: went straight to eleven. They put three receivers on the
- 47:34Speaker 1: field quite a bit. We'll see if they do that
- 47:37Speaker 1: against the Seahawks. I would think they go back to
- 47:40Speaker 1: playing more twelve. I don't know if thirteen with both
- 47:45Speaker 1: having Nikua and DeVonta Adams, I don't know if you're
- 47:47Speaker 1: gonna see that as much. You might just to take
- 47:49Speaker 1: some mileage off Davante in this game when you're between
- 47:52Speaker 1: the twenties. But I'm very, very interested to see how
- 47:56Speaker 1: McVeigh this third time around chooses to go about attacking
- 48:01Speaker 1: the Seahawks defense that has played just lights out all
- 48:05Speaker 1: year long. I think it's gonna be a fantastic game.
- 48:08Speaker 1: I don't think anybody's blowing anybody out here. I think
- 48:11Speaker 1: it's gonna be a chess match, it's gonna be cat
- 48:13Speaker 1: and mouse. It's going to be a game. I could
- 48:16Speaker 1: see the lead changing a couple of different times. I
- 48:20Speaker 1: would favor the Rams because of their experience. I know
- 48:25Speaker 1: that the Seahawks are a two and a half point favorite,
- 48:27Speaker 1: but I would favor the Rams because you know, they've
- 48:32Speaker 1: got Stafford and the Seahawks have Darnold. And I don't
- 48:35Speaker 1: want to make it as simplistic as that, but I
- 48:38Speaker 1: think you can if you want to. At the beginning
- 48:41Speaker 1: of the playoffs on Philly Voice, all of us were
- 48:44Speaker 1: asked to in the sports staff. We're asked to do
- 48:47Speaker 1: the whole bracket, the whole bracket, and when I was done,
- 48:50Speaker 1: I had the Broncos versus the Rams, and I'm gonna
- 48:55Speaker 1: stick with that.
- 48:55Speaker 3: I know.
- 48:55Speaker 1: I said earlier in the week that I was leaning
- 48:57Speaker 1: towards Seattle because it's just been playing so impressively and
- 49:01Speaker 1: they're so hard to beat. But I think it doesn't
- 49:05Speaker 1: benefit them to play a team that has seen them
- 49:08Speaker 1: twice and knows them well. If the Seahawks were playing
- 49:11Speaker 1: the Bears, I would, no matter how it happened, Bears
- 49:16Speaker 1: beating the Rams. I would tell you the Seahawks I
- 49:18Speaker 1: think would win by ten or more. If they were
- 49:21Speaker 1: playing any other team that was the non NFC West team.
- 49:25Speaker 1: If somehow it was the Packers, if it was the Eagles,
- 49:27Speaker 1: I would probably tell you a ten or more. But
- 49:30Speaker 1: this RAMS team knows them inside and out, and that's not.
- 49:34Speaker 2: A great and it's also not an advantage for the Rams.
- 49:37Speaker 1: But I'm saying that as thinking that the Rams have
- 49:39Speaker 1: the better overall roster, So I will go do my
- 49:44Speaker 1: picks right now.
- 49:45Speaker 4: Hey, it's that time of the year that everyone's trying
