- 0:23Now let's get into today's topic.
- 0:28Hi, my name is Tony Holler. I'm the track coach at
- 0:31Plainfield North High School. I'm presently in my 44th year of
- 0:35coaching track. This is my contribution to the
- 0:38Gill 1918 project. It's going to be called the 10
- 0:43pillars of Feed the Cats. Feed the Cats is a way to cook.
- 0:49It's not a system. It's not a recipe.
- 0:54Here are my 10 pillars. Number one is that speed is the
- 0:59tide that lifts all boats. One of the reasons why speed is
- 1:04so important is because the faster your Max velocity, the
- 1:09faster your submax velocity. In that way speed reserve
- 1:15improves endurance. What this means is that you can
- 1:19run submaximally at much more efficient in much more efficient
- 1:25ways. Speed is related to
- 1:28explosiveness. There's no such thing as a slow
- 1:32athlete being explosive. You must be fast and strong.
- 1:37I would argue that every event in track and field will benefit
- 1:41from improved speed. The pole vault, the jumps, even
- 1:47the throws. The faster the athlete, the
- 1:50better the athlete. I love to talk about what
- 1:54happened when Brian Kula, a very good friend of mine in Denver,
- 1:58trained two female golfers. He did not train them like
- 2:03golfers. He trained them to Sprint and
- 2:06lift and jump and bounce. Their Max velocity sprinting got
- 2:122 miles an hour faster because they got faster, their club
- 2:19speed got faster as well. And matter of fact, both girls
- 2:23had club speeds that went 15 miles an hour faster because of
- 2:29their speed improvement. Rest, recovery and sleep is the
- 2:35foundation of high performance. In my Feed the Cat's pyramid, my
- 2:43base is rest, recovery, sleep. If you're not doing those
- 2:47things, you do not give yourself a chance to get to the next
- 2:51level. You may be wondering what is the
- 2:54next level? The next level is general
- 2:57athleticism, Sprint, lift, jump and bounce.
- 3:02After that, we can start working on sport fundamentals and track
- 3:05and field. That would be things like
- 3:06hurdling and vaulting and triple jumping.
- 3:10By the way, the top of the pyramid is winning pillar #3
- 3:18record, rank, and publish. There's only one recipe for
- 3:24gaining motivation and that success.
- 3:29Specifically the dopamine hits we get when we observe ourselves
- 3:34making progress. That comes from a book called
- 3:36The Motivation Myth by Jeff Hayden.
- 3:38I truly believe that when you show athletes progress, they get
- 3:43excited about their sport and become motivated.
- 3:48I also believe that Record Rank and Publish gamifies practice
- 3:54and makes practice much less miserable #4 tired is the enemy,
- 4:01not the goal. We are looking for race horses,
- 4:05not work horses. Vince Lombardi, 60 years ago,
- 4:11said fatigue makes cowards of us all.
- 4:14So what did coaches do? They went out and tried to get
- 4:17their athletes as tired as possible every day, every
- 4:22practice, so that they would be accustomed to fatigue entering
- 4:27the game. To me, this is backwards.
- 4:30I believe we need to prioritize performance over hard work, that
- 4:37we need to prioritize performance over effort.
- 4:40By the way, effort might be a coach's favorite word.
- 4:44Because if their kids are too tired to perform, he can only
- 4:49ask forever #5 never let today ruin tomorrow.
- 4:55Never burn the stake. I love what Les Spellman says.
- 5:01If you make a profit every day, you will never go broke.
- 5:06In other words, we are looking for small gains.
- 5:08We are not looking to burn the steak day after day and go
- 5:12downhill and endless spiral getting injured, being
- 5:18miserable. Instead we could do what James
- 5:22Clear would suggest. James Clear wrote Atomic Habits.
- 5:26If you can get 1% better each day for one year, you'll end up
- 5:3137 times better by the time you're done.
- 5:38Pillar number six, we want to be 100% healthy and only 80% in
- 5:44shape, not the other way around. This quote is actually by Harry
- 5:49Mara, the coach of Ashton Eaton. Another quote that I go to all
- 5:54the time is that any fool can get another fool tired.
- 5:59Personally, I'm in the business of winning, and hard work
- 6:04sometimes interferes with winning if it detrains speed.
- 6:11Pillar #7 We want to perform. In practice, I believe that
- 6:16moderate exercise never leads to high performance.
- 6:20I actually stole that quote from Bill Bauerman who is a distance
- 6:25coach. He wouldn't have Sprint coach
- 6:26like me. Bauerman of course coached
- 6:29Oregon and coached the famous legendary Steve Prefontaine.
- 6:35I believe that if you practice in 3rd gear every day, it's
- 6:40crazy to think that that will lead to 5th gear performance in
- 6:44a meet, in a game, in a race. I also believe if you train the
- 6:50extreme, you train the entire range pillar #8 let the game be
- 6:58the hardest thing you do. Of course in track and field it
- 7:01would be the meet or the race, but let the performance be the
- 7:05hardest thing you do. My dad was a basketball coach
- 7:10who won 629 games in 47 years of coaching high school and
- 7:15college. He knew what what he was doing.
- 7:17He was a great coach, but he used to tell his teams every
- 7:21year we are going to practice so hard.
- 7:23The games will feel easy and it made sense to athletes.
- 7:28To me, I'm the opposite. I want, I want the race to be
- 7:33hard. I want the game to be hard.
- 7:36Because if we overdo it in practice, we detrain the skills
- 7:40necessary to compete. For example, if you train for
- 7:45your first marathon, you don't run 50 miles every day.
- 7:49You start small. You prioritize health, both
- 7:54mental and physical health. So even though we train the
- 8:00extremes in a feed the cat situation, we are micro dosing
- 8:05those extremes and we stay healthy and we learn to love our
- 8:09training pillar #9 kids are good at what they like and obsessed
- 8:18with what they love. Love is a very powerful drug.
- 8:23No one is good at what they hate, and I think that sports in
- 8:27America has intentionally made practices miserable.
- 8:32It was just the hell you had to go through.
- 8:34To get to run in the track meet or to play in that football game
- 8:38on Friday night. If you truly love something, you
- 8:42don't have to be pushed. You feel pulled.
- 8:48And my favorite education quote of all times?
- 8:52And of course, coaching is nothing more than education is
- 8:56that education is not the filling of a pail, but the
- 9:00lighting of a fire that came from William Butler Yeats.
- 9:05And that is the only quote that stayed on my chemistry desk
- 9:10during my 38 years of teaching chemistry.
- 9:14And the final pillar #10 make practice the best part of a kids
- 9:20day. When kids love practice, they
- 9:25will make you a better coach. We will reflect our athletes and
- 9:32our athletes will reflect us. This is what I call the endless
- 9:38feedback loop of feed the cats. Thank you for your time and of
- 9:45course, remember to feed those cats.
