- 0:02Speaker 1: From Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee, it's the top-ranked Texas
- 0:06Speaker 1: Longhorns against the 14th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Manning will work from the shotgun.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Off the wide hash on first down and 10 yards
- 0:14Speaker 1: for the snap.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Play action. Manning looking. Pressure coming.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Going deep downfield, and he does have him at Mosley open,
- 0:21Speaker 1: and he'll make the catch inside the 25-yard line. Mosley
- 0:25Speaker 1: sprinting downfield, got behind the linebacker, in front of the safety,
- 0:29Speaker 1: and hauls it in for a 43-yard strike. Second down
- 0:32Speaker 1: and seven, Manning out of the pistol, has the snap,
- 0:35Speaker 1: hands it to Brannigan, bounces outside, inside, five, no line,
- 0:38Speaker 1: touchdown Texas! Raleigh Brown picked up two huge blocks and
- 0:43Speaker 1: burst into the end zone, a nine-yard touchdown run. On
- 0:46Speaker 1: third down and 12, Faison Brandon with a shotgun snap.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Back to throw. Pressure coming.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Being chased.
- 0:51Speaker 2: He's hit. He'll go down.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Sacked by Colin Simmons.
- 0:55Speaker 2: He wrapped him up and dropped him. That'll hold him back.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Chimeno trade a buck.
- 0:58Speaker 1: The senior transfer from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Transferred in from
- 1:02Speaker 1: New Mexico on the snap. Good snap and hold. And
- 1:04Speaker 1: the kick is good. And the Longhorns are back up
- 1:07Speaker 1: seven points here.
- 1:10Speaker 2: 31 seconds here in the quarter. Number two. Two receivers
- 1:13Speaker 2: wide right. One on the short side split left.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Manning will turn and go up the sideline, looking over there,
- 1:20Speaker 1: and a diving catch.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Made by Cam Coleman.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Well, he was in man coverage down the sideline. There's
- 1:26Speaker 1: also flags down that might be for roughing the passer.
- 1:29Speaker 1: The hold of the punter, Max Cimento, trade above the snap.
- 1:32Speaker 1: From the left hash mark, a 45-yard field goal try.
- 1:35Speaker 1: The kick on the way, and the kick is good.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Knocked through by Gianni Spedic, and the Longhorns are back
- 1:42Speaker 1: in front. Off the right hash at the Tennessee 45-yard line.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Second down and six. Back to throwoff play. Action pressure coming.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Wrapped up.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Down he goes. Colin Simmons strikes. And this time, Colin.
- 1:55Speaker 1: no excessive celebration or anything like that he just gets
- 1:58Speaker 1: up and hug the teammate from the shotgun brandon to
- 2:01Speaker 1: take the snap two receivers to either side of the
- 2:03Speaker 1: formation he has the snap back to throw deep retreat
- 2:06Speaker 1: pressure coming scrambling still scrambling and down he goes colin
- 2:11Speaker 1: simmons does it again he clipped the ankles and knocked
- 2:14Speaker 1: him down a loss of 15 And the big fella
- 2:17Speaker 1: was in on the party as well, Grafard. Double wing set,
- 2:20Speaker 1: out of the shotgun, on first down, has the snap.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Back to throw, steps up, pressure coming, and he'll go
- 2:26Speaker 1: down again. The Longhorns sack him yet again. A big
- 2:31Speaker 1: loss that takes it inside the 25-yard line, and it's
- 2:34Speaker 1: Hiro Kanu who comes up with the.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Sack for a loss of six.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Arch from the shotgun on third down. Now he shifts Mosley,
- 2:41Speaker 1: who was one of the guys in the backfield, out.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Arch looks right, throws down the middle. It's caught by Wingo.
- 2:46Speaker 1: And a first down at the Tennessee 40-yard line. Ryan
- 2:49Speaker 1: had to reach back a little bit, pulled it back in.
- 2:52Speaker 1: And that's a gain of 18 and a first down.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Manning out of the pistol. Raleigh Brown lined up behind
- 2:57Speaker 1: him on first and goal off the right hash mark
- 3:00Speaker 1: at the volunteer 40-yard line.
- 3:02Speaker 2: And it's a handoff. Brown off right tackle to the
- 3:04Speaker 2: goal line.
- 3:04Speaker 4: Touchdown, Texas.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Raleigh Brown takes it across for the score. And the
- 3:10Speaker 1: Loghorns have their largest lead of the day. And now
- 3:14Speaker 1: the clock is put in motion. On second down and five.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Shotgun snap. Back to Brandon.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Scrambles.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Down he goes.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Raheem Biles got him. It's a loss back on the
- 3:24Speaker 1: opposite side of midfield. It's back to the 49, so
- 3:28Speaker 1: they lose the five yards they got.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Clock moving. Down to 12. Down to 10.
- 3:33Speaker 5: And now.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Tennessee lines up. Shotgun snap.
- 3:37Speaker 6: Back.
- 3:38Speaker 7: Branded.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Scrambles to the right side. Lumps.
- 3:41Speaker 5: Heads it.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Downfield. To the end zone.
- 3:44Speaker 4: And it is ticked away.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Game is over.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Jelani McDonald knocks the ball out of the back of
- 3:50Speaker 1: the end zone. The Loghorns survive. Texas wins the game.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Final score, Texas 20, Tennessee 17.
- 3:58Speaker 2: So you take a deep breath. You exhale.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Maybe a sigh of relief, put a smile on your face,
- 4:07Speaker 1: and you head on to the next one. That is
- 4:09Speaker 1: if you, of course, are invested in what the Longhorn
- 4:13Speaker 1: football team is doing.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Good afternoon, everybody.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Welcome to the program here on Sports Radio AM 13
- 4:18Speaker 1: Under the Zone, and where you can always listen to
- 4:20Speaker 1: us for free on the iHeartRadio app.
- 4:22Speaker 2: My name is Craig Wake. Glad to have you with us.
- 4:25Speaker 1: The producer, Jay Kerman, he put together that montage of highlights,
- 4:29Speaker 1: and there were quite a few highs and lows. some
- 4:34Speaker 1: lows in that game as well but the Longhorns had
- 4:36Speaker 1: enough perseverance with that late drive and then after Tennessee
- 4:40Speaker 1: answered with that desperation drive to get within three and
- 4:43Speaker 1: I think somebody said the last 41 seconds seemed to
- 4:45Speaker 1: take 41 minutes to play with the penalties and all
- 4:49Speaker 1: the other stuff the onside kick that wasn't that was
- 4:52Speaker 1: that we found that they shouldn't have been and all
- 4:55Speaker 1: that other kind of stuff so uh that's quite the
- 4:57Speaker 1: Saturday in Knoxville.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Quite the Saturday in Knoxville quite the Saturday all across
- 5:02Speaker 3: college football We had a great time previewing it for
- 5:05Speaker 3: you at Backport Social. And I've got to say, the
- 5:08Speaker 3: half of our panel who thought this would be a
- 5:10Speaker 3: lower scoring game, including our own Cameron Parker and including
- 5:13Speaker 3: Corey Mose, who joined the panel, they were right. It
- 5:16Speaker 3: was a real rock fight there for a couple quarters
- 5:19Speaker 3: in the middle. And good to see from our perspective.
- 5:22Speaker 3: the Longhorns pull through.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:24Speaker 1: So you had it being a little more widespread on
- 5:26Speaker 1: the final margin.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Is that the deal?
- 5:27Speaker 3: I thought both offenses would score a bit more. I
- 5:30Speaker 3: had the margin correct in my prediction. I picked Texas
- 5:32Speaker 3: to win by three, but I had it a little
- 5:34Speaker 3: higher scoring.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Okay. All right.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Certainly the Longhorns would like to have scored more points.
- 5:40Speaker 1: The defense played well enough, certainly with the way that
- 5:43Speaker 1: Tennessee had been running the ball and their total offense
- 5:45Speaker 1: coming into the game to be able to shut that
- 5:48Speaker 1: down was important as well. Now, Having said that, of course,
- 5:53Speaker 1: there are areas, need areas of improvement. And here on
- 5:58Speaker 1: this Longhorns Monday presentation, as we do, you know, starting
- 6:03Speaker 1: at 11 o'clock in the morning on Mondays, as we
- 6:06Speaker 1: broadcast live from the UT campus, and Mike Hardball-Harge and
- 6:09Speaker 1: Cameron Parker join me over there. We have some analysis
- 6:11Speaker 1: and a look back at the game from 11 to 11.30.
- 6:13Speaker 1: And then Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkeesian takes the microphone
- 6:17Speaker 1: at 11.30 for his weekly press conference. And we air
- 6:21Speaker 1: that in its entirety live. What we do here on
- 6:24Speaker 1: Mondays is to, on this program, since it happens, you know,
- 6:29Speaker 1: two and a half hours behind us, not everybody gets
- 6:34Speaker 1: to hear that press conference live.
- 6:37Speaker 2: When it happens at 1130 in.
- 6:39Speaker 1: The morning, some folks are at work, some are at lunch,
- 6:42Speaker 1: some are just out of pocket and don't get a
- 6:44Speaker 1: chance to hear it. So that's why we always bring
- 6:45Speaker 1: it back to you when we bring you the program
- 6:49Speaker 1: starting at 2. So you'll hear from Longwood's head coach,
- 6:51Speaker 1: Steve Sarkeesian, all of his comments from the weekly news conference.
- 6:55Speaker 2: We'll do that.
- 6:57Speaker 1: There is other college football to discuss, obviously, as well,
- 7:00Speaker 1: as Jake pointed out. We'll get to that. There is
- 7:04Speaker 1: NFL football. Heartbreaking loss for the Cowboys. Look, for all
- 7:08Speaker 1: the world, two or three times they could have put
- 7:10Speaker 1: the game away and won the game, and then it
- 7:12Speaker 1: looked like they'd done enough to tie it with waning
- 7:16Speaker 1: seconds left, only to see Baltimore come down and get
- 7:19Speaker 1: a game-winning field goal of 54 yards to win it.
- 7:24Speaker 1: So that was something else, and we'll hear Brian Schottenheimer's
- 7:28Speaker 1: comments about that. Houston Texans struggling to get it going.
- 7:32Speaker 1: They're now 0-3, lost to a heartbreaker again. It was
- 7:35Speaker 1: a late score for the Texans to take the lead
- 7:38Speaker 1: under two minutes to go, only to give up a
- 7:41Speaker 1: field goal drive. that the Indianapolis Colts were able to
- 7:44Speaker 1: pull off. So we'll hear from D'Amico Ryans, their head
- 7:47Speaker 1: coach as well. We don't mind hearing from you. If
- 7:49Speaker 1: you'd like to text the program, feel free to do it.
- 7:52Speaker 1: All you have to do is text the word Texas,
- 7:54Speaker 1: followed by your question or comment to 81530. So text
- 7:58Speaker 1: the word Texas. It can be with a capital T
- 8:00Speaker 1: or little t, doesn't matter. It can be all caps, whatever.
- 8:03Speaker 1: You text the word Texas and then your question or
- 8:06Speaker 1: comment to 81530. Standard messaging and data rates may apply.
- 8:12Speaker 1: We have the TalkBack microphone that we're always pleased to
- 8:16Speaker 1: open up for you if you want to have your
- 8:17Speaker 1: voice actually heard on the air. All you have to
- 8:19Speaker 1: do is make sure you already have the iHeartRadio app
- 8:22Speaker 1: downloaded on your smartphone, be it the iPhone or the Android.
- 8:26Speaker 1: But that's it right there. It's real easy and simple
- 8:29Speaker 1: to do. And if you haven't downloaded it, you can
- 8:31Speaker 1: download it. It's real easy, and it's absolutely free as well.
- 8:37Speaker 2: And then when you do that, then... It'll download.
- 8:42Speaker 1: And then after it downloads on your smartphone, then you'll
- 8:46Speaker 1: put in your search window, your search bar, whatever, your
- 8:49Speaker 1: search magnifying glass. You do a little search for AM
- 8:53Speaker 1: 1300 The Zone. It'll pop straight up there on the
- 8:56Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app. So it'll be to AM 1300 The Zone.
- 8:59Speaker 1: And then when it comes up, then you will see
- 9:04Speaker 1: two buttons, a little white button that That's kind of
- 9:07Speaker 1: triangular shape. That's to listen to what's going on the air. Like,
- 9:10Speaker 1: you know, to hear the program that's on the air
- 9:12Speaker 1: right now, you would hit the white button. But there
- 9:14Speaker 1: is a red button with a little white microphone. That's
- 9:16Speaker 1: the key. That's the talkback mic. So if you want
- 9:19Speaker 1: to leave us a voice message, you can do that.
- 9:21Speaker 1: You tap that red button. You have 30 seconds to
- 9:23Speaker 1: do it. Don't go beyond 30. It'll cut off like
- 9:25Speaker 1: an answering machine for those of you old school who
- 9:28Speaker 1: get that. But anyway, you hit the red button with
- 9:31Speaker 1: the white microphone, tap that, and then you can leave
- 9:34Speaker 1: us a message up to 30 seconds. So, that's ways
- 9:38Speaker 1: to reach us. We do have inconceivable this hour coming up,
- 9:43Speaker 1: and I'm not going to put this next thing into inconceivable,
- 9:47Speaker 1: although had the game turned the other way, had Tennessee
- 9:52Speaker 1: come up with a Hail Mary catch in the end
- 9:54Speaker 1: zone for a win, then it might have fallen into
- 9:57Speaker 1: the inconceivable category, which we'll get to in a moment.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Um but uh we will have.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Inconceivable coming up and uh like i said we're going
- 10:06Speaker 1: to review uh the longhorns game the sec college football
- 10:10Speaker 1: in general the new rankings are out the um Dallas Cowboys,
- 10:16Speaker 1: the Houston Texans will do all that.
- 10:17Speaker 2: So that's all coming up on the program today.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Okay, before we get to the break, just to make
- 10:23Speaker 1: sure that everything was clarified about the onside kick that
- 10:27Speaker 1: happened on Saturday. Tennessee had scored, of course, and then
- 10:32Speaker 1: we knew since they had exhausted all their timeouts and
- 10:38Speaker 1: got the football back, they were going to have to
- 10:42Speaker 1: execute an onside kick to come up with it. Their
- 10:45Speaker 1: first try went out of bounds, but it was only
- 10:50Speaker 1: flagged for going out of bounds, not because it was
- 10:52Speaker 1: incorrectly kicked, but it was waved off anyway because Texas
- 10:57Speaker 1: had called a timeout to get their special team set
- 10:59Speaker 1: up for that. Then the second one came and the
- 11:03Speaker 1: instructions then were for the Tennessee kicker to use a
- 11:08Speaker 1: drop kick. Now, for you old school NFL people, if
- 11:12Speaker 1: you never heard if you're not old school and don't
- 11:16Speaker 1: know what a drop kick is, you can Google search.
- 11:19Speaker 1: It's kind of a lost art, really. The NFL used
- 11:22Speaker 1: to use it. Kickers used to use the drop kick
- 11:24Speaker 1: to kick extra points. And it's basically the art of
- 11:27Speaker 1: dropping the ball out of your hand. It hits the
- 11:30Speaker 1: ground and then you kick it. So that's how you
- 11:33Speaker 1: can do it. However, there are stipulations to what is
- 11:38Speaker 1: allowed when it is a quote-unquote free.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Kick, which... After a touch, after a safety, if.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Your team has been on the wrong end of a
- 11:48Speaker 1: safety and you have to free kick it, you can
- 11:50Speaker 1: either put it on the tee or you can just
- 11:52Speaker 1: punt it straight away. But that's not the case with
- 11:56Speaker 1: kickoffs with that. And so the second kick, after there's
- 12:01Speaker 1: some movement laterally along that, the second kick got past
- 12:05Speaker 1: Ryan Wingo and it was recovered by Tennessee.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Longwood's got pressure.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Again toward the end on face on Brandon, and he
- 12:14Speaker 1: wound up just tossing a Hail Mary attempt in the end,
- 12:17Speaker 1: so he was knocked away by Jelani McDonald, and that
- 12:19Speaker 1: was the end of the game.
- 12:21Speaker 2: So after the.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Game, Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian, told us that he
- 12:28Speaker 1: was going to check into that because he was pretty
- 12:31Speaker 1: sure the kick wasn't legal. And so there was a
- 12:34Speaker 1: lot of discussion and talking and back and forth and
- 12:37Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff about.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Whether the kick was legal, illegal, so on and so forth.
- 12:41Speaker 1: There were Tennessee fans claiming that there should have been
- 12:43Speaker 1: pass interference called in the end zone against Texas, which
- 12:45Speaker 1: wasn't called. And it looked like a legitimate play. But
- 12:49Speaker 1: even if that had been the case, if the rules
- 12:54Speaker 1: had been properly adjudicated on the onside kick attempt, it
- 12:58Speaker 1: never would have gotten.
- 12:58Speaker 2: To that point.
- 13:00Speaker 1: So here's, or might not have gotten to it, put
- 13:03Speaker 1: it this way, they would have been pushed back and
- 13:04Speaker 1: had to re-kick. But here's how it goes. In the statement,
- 13:09Speaker 1: coming from the Southeastern Conference. This is their statement, and
- 13:12Speaker 1: I quote, the onside kick with 122 to play in
- 13:17Speaker 1: the Texas at Tennessee football game on Saturday was incorrectly
- 13:20Speaker 1: officiated and should have resulted in a five-yard penalty on
- 13:25Speaker 1: Tennessee and a replay of the down. A drop kick
- 13:28Speaker 1: is permissible, but a free kick must be made from
- 13:33Speaker 1: the kicking team's restraining line, which is the 35-yard line
- 13:38Speaker 1: on a kickoff, unless relocated by penalty. The ball was
- 13:42Speaker 1: at least one yard behind the 35-yard line.
- 13:45Speaker 2: When it was kicked.
- 13:47Speaker 1: In addition, after the ball is ready for play, the
- 13:50Speaker 1: kicker may not change his lateral position between the hash marks.
- 13:55Speaker 1: That spot can change only after a charge timeout or.
- 14:02Speaker 2: On a subsequent kick.
- 14:03Speaker 1: The kicker's movement after the ready signal violated the rule.
- 14:08Speaker 1: The correct enforcement is a five-yard penalty and a replay
- 14:12Speaker 1: of the down. The Southeastern Conference regrets the error and
- 14:16Speaker 1: will continue working with the secretary slash editor for NCAA
- 14:19Speaker 1: football rules and officials to ensure consistent application of free
- 14:24Speaker 1: kick rules. It was a lesson for a lot of
- 14:26Speaker 1: folks to learn, including those who were saying, look, he
- 14:29Speaker 1: wasn't across the line.
- 14:30Speaker 2: In fact, we were behind it.
- 14:32Speaker 8: True.
- 14:32Speaker 2: That's also not legal.
- 14:35Speaker 1: It has to be on the 35 when you do it,
- 14:37Speaker 1: when you kick it. So that's why those are put
- 14:40Speaker 1: on a tee quite often or laid flat if you
- 14:43Speaker 1: want to do like what the Falcons did against the
- 14:44Speaker 1: Cowboys a few years ago with that watermelon kick.
- 14:46Speaker 2: You lay it flat, but it's got to be on
- 14:48Speaker 2: the 35.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Or you better drop it exactly at the 35 if
- 14:52Speaker 1: you're going to do the drop kick, which would be
- 14:54Speaker 1: extremely difficult to do. Because for a lot of folks
- 14:57Speaker 1: who were then tweeting on Saturday night and Sunday.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Why don't more teams do this? That's why. It's extremely
- 15:03Speaker 2: difficult to do it legally.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Not only that, the movement laterally along the kick line
- 15:11Speaker 1: is not allowed.
- 15:12Speaker 4: So.
- 15:13Speaker 3: Two things wrong with it, and nobody caught it.
- 15:15Speaker 5: Right.
- 15:16Speaker 3: Exactly. Well, somebody flagged it, but they discussed and picked
- 15:18Speaker 3: it up.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Yeah, initially. And then it was let go. So it was.
- 15:25Speaker 1: And the third thing was wrong is that the replay
- 15:27Speaker 1: crew deemed it appropriate.
- 15:29Speaker 3: It didn't buzz down.
- 15:31Speaker 1: So, anyway, that's how Tennessee got the ball and had
- 15:35Speaker 1: the opportunity for the Hail Mary pass.
- 15:38Speaker 5: So.
- 15:38Speaker 1: as others have said, can you imagine what would have
- 15:40Speaker 1: happened had Tennessee caught that in the end zone? Because
- 15:43Speaker 1: the result would not have been overturned, even with an
- 15:46Speaker 1: incorrect application of the rules.
- 15:50Speaker 2: And I've had this come.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Up a lot where folks have asked me about the,
- 15:59Speaker 1: folks have asked me about, you know, the Western Michigan,
- 16:03Speaker 1: Michigan thing, and why can't you reverse it if it
- 16:08Speaker 1: was done incorrectly because it was the last play of
- 16:11Speaker 1: the game. And that always makes me think of, was
- 16:16Speaker 1: it the perfect game? Was it Galarraga through for the
- 16:18Speaker 1: Tigers against Cleveland? And Jim Joyce, the first base umpire,
- 16:26Speaker 1: incorrectly called the final out of the game and called
- 16:33Speaker 1: it safe. And then he finished, and then Joyce felt
- 16:36Speaker 1: terrible about it. He was kind of choked up and everything,
- 16:38Speaker 1: and he said, I ruined it for that kid. But
- 16:40Speaker 1: Gallarado did a great job and was just as gentlemanly
- 16:43Speaker 1: about it as possible. But it raised a valid point.
- 16:48Speaker 1: Baseball being different than football because a timing thing and
- 16:51Speaker 1: more time would have been, baseball was a simple play
- 16:55Speaker 1: that was the last play of the game and therefore
- 17:00Speaker 1: would have been correctable and therefore acceptable could have been
- 17:04Speaker 1: overturned and the perfect game awarded because that would be
- 17:09Speaker 1: correcting an umpire's call just like you do on abs
- 17:12Speaker 1: if he misses one on the ball strike or an
- 17:15Speaker 1: appeal play say a guy sliding into the place called
- 17:18Speaker 1: out when he was safe those are correctable fixable errors
- 17:22Speaker 1: in a non-timed situation uh so that's you know that
- 17:29Speaker 1: that would be the difference of that otherwise if if
- 17:32Speaker 1: If Tennessee had caught the Hail Mary, the touchdown would
- 17:37Speaker 1: have counted, and they would not have been able to
- 17:39Speaker 1: go back even on Monday morning, the SEC, and retroactively
- 17:43Speaker 1: award the game to Texas and say, you know, they
- 17:47Speaker 1: blew the call on the onside kick.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Therefore, that touchdown can't count.
- 17:51Speaker 5: Right.
- 17:51Speaker 3: Football doesn't work like that.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:54Speaker 1: So, again, fortunately for the Longhorns, and I dare say
- 17:58Speaker 1: also for the SEC officiating crew in the SEC office— Oh, boy.
- 18:03Speaker 1: It wound up not ultimately determining who won the game
- 18:08Speaker 1: and who lost the game.
- 18:09Speaker 3: For the Tennessee fans complaining about P.I., yeah, why don't
- 18:12Speaker 3: you just take a nice little listen to this segment here.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, just— and then on top of that, I've
- 18:19Speaker 1: seen still frame forwards. Guys are going up to make
- 18:21Speaker 1: the play for the ball, and McDonald knocks it out
- 18:23Speaker 1: of the back of the end zone there.
- 18:24Speaker 2: I don't think there was going to be a case
- 18:27Speaker 2: for a pass interference call anyway.
- 18:29Speaker 3: No chance.
- 18:29Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 18:30Speaker 1: So, anyway— There you go. That brings us up to
- 18:33Speaker 1: speed on that. All right, coming up, we're going to
- 18:34Speaker 1: hear from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian. If you have
- 18:37Speaker 1: questions on the text line, you can text us to 81530.
- 18:41Speaker 1: You can also leave us a talkback if you want
- 18:43Speaker 1: on the talkback microphone as well.
- 18:45Speaker 3: You can comment on X on YouTube, on Facebook. We've
- 18:48Speaker 3: got one that we'll try and get to after the break.
- 18:50Speaker 1: We'll do that next here on a Longhorn's Monday on
- 18:52Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app. Well,
- 19:04Speaker 1: there might have been some fans that might have turned
- 19:05Speaker 1: to some Tennessee whiskey after the game, especially for Tennessee fans.
- 19:09Speaker 1: After the game on Saturday, Roger Wallace and I went
- 19:15Speaker 1: to a place to grab some dinner. And it was
- 19:20Speaker 1: a place I was familiar with from going for a
- 19:23Speaker 1: long run basketball games, men's and women's and then baseball
- 19:26Speaker 1: as well. In fact, Roger and I went there a
- 19:27Speaker 1: couple of times back in May when Texas had the
- 19:29Speaker 1: weekend series.
- 19:31Speaker 2: Against Tennessee.
- 19:32Speaker 1: So we went there, and there were quite a few
- 19:35Speaker 1: people who were kind of drowning their sorrows. And there
- 19:38Speaker 1: were some Longhorn fans in a rather jubilant state as well.
- 19:42Speaker 3: What's it called in Knoxville there? Market Square? All those restaurants?
- 19:46Speaker 2: We weren't there. We were down by the river. Okay.
- 19:49Speaker 1: And it was pretty hopping as well, that place. And
- 19:54Speaker 1: a lot of talk about the game and.
- 19:57Speaker 2: Review of the game. So in review of that, here on.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Our Longhorns Monday, we bring you the weekly news conference
- 20:03Speaker 1: live at 1130 in the morning and then reconstructed for
- 20:08Speaker 1: you in the afternoon on Starting off the opening comments
- 20:10Speaker 1: from the head coach, Steve Sarkeesian.
- 20:12Speaker 4: It's always good to be undefeated, headed into the bye
- 20:16Speaker 4: and 4-0, and we got plenty of stuff to talk
- 20:19Speaker 4: about there. I think just a little recap of the
- 20:22Speaker 4: ball game, some things we talked about with the team
- 20:26Speaker 4: this morning. I thought one was really impressed with the offense,
- 20:32Speaker 4: the way we started the game. To get the ball
- 20:34Speaker 4: in that environment and to go seven plays, 75 yards,
- 20:39Speaker 4: to take the lead seven to nothing on the road,
- 20:41Speaker 4: I thought was really big for us about owning the environment,
- 20:44Speaker 4: owning the arena. Um, I've never been to a game
- 20:48Speaker 4: where the opposing fans were all in their seats by
- 20:52Speaker 4: the time we took pregame warmups. And so that was
- 20:54Speaker 4: a different environment and a credit to Tennessee that they
- 20:59Speaker 4: did a heck of a job of, of creating that
- 21:01Speaker 4: environment and, and all that came with it. Air force
- 21:04Speaker 4: one flying overhead, all the things. So I think that was,
- 21:07Speaker 4: that was a really cool way to start. from that
- 21:10Speaker 4: point forward until about the second to last offensive drive,
- 21:14Speaker 4: we did not play very good offensive football. And I'd
- 21:19Speaker 4: love to say it was this or that. It literally
- 21:22Speaker 4: was us taking turns of not doing the things that
- 21:27Speaker 4: we had practiced to do. And that was unfortunate because
- 21:34Speaker 4: sometimes it's easier to say, this one position group or
- 21:38Speaker 4: this one player or this one thing was the issue.
- 21:42Speaker 4: And it really wasn't. I think most importantly, we've got
- 21:45Speaker 4: to do our job. We've got to trust our training
- 21:48Speaker 4: offensively to get that done. And that'll be the task
- 21:51Speaker 4: this week throughout the bye week of where we need
- 21:53Speaker 4: to improve offensively and where we can build upon that.
- 21:57Speaker 4: But again, I'd love to say, man, it was just
- 22:01Speaker 4: the right tackle or the right guard or the center
- 22:03Speaker 4: or the left guard. Or the tight ends, but it
- 22:06Speaker 4: was like each play, somebody else was kind of taking
- 22:09Speaker 4: their turn. So we've got to get that rectified. We've
- 22:12Speaker 4: got to get these guys believing in their training and
- 22:15Speaker 4: trusting their training to perform. I thought they came back
- 22:19Speaker 4: and had a really critical drive in the fourth quarter
- 22:22Speaker 4: when we scored, hit Wingo on the third down conversion,
- 22:25Speaker 4: then the screen, and then Relique obviously scoring the touchdown.
- 22:28Speaker 4: So it was kind of bookending the game. how the
- 22:30Speaker 4: way we started the game and then kind of how
- 22:32Speaker 4: we finished in the middle, uh, was clearly not good
- 22:36Speaker 4: enough for, for the way we want to play, uh,
- 22:38Speaker 4: offensive football about defensively. Uh, what a tremendous performance by
- 22:43Speaker 4: those guys on, on the defensive side of the ball.
- 22:45Speaker 4: I think Tennessee was coming in average in just about
- 22:48Speaker 4: 300 yards a game rushing. And, you know, our first
- 22:52Speaker 4: point of emphasis was stopping the run. Uh, and I
- 22:55Speaker 4: thought we did that at an, at an elite level.
- 22:57Speaker 4: And the second was how could we affect the quarterback? And,
- 23:00Speaker 4: You know, any game you have 10 sacks, you're clearly
- 23:06Speaker 4: affecting the quarterback. So there was a lot of guys.
- 23:08Speaker 4: I know the highlight is Colin with the five sacks,
- 23:12Speaker 4: but I thought Lance Jackson had his best game since
- 23:15Speaker 4: he's been a Longhorn. I thought Maraud Watson had a
- 23:19Speaker 4: heck of a game for us, and just the effort
- 23:21Speaker 4: he showed. There's a play where the quarterback scrambles out
- 23:24Speaker 4: of the pocket, and he breaks from the stack and
- 23:27Speaker 4: gets a hit on the quarterback on their sidelines was
- 23:29Speaker 4: just an You know, incredible effort play for a guy who's,
- 23:33Speaker 4: you know, 315, 320 pounds. I mean, those are the
- 23:35Speaker 4: plays as a coach that you really appreciate. We knew
- 23:39Speaker 4: they were going to take their shots, six to eight
- 23:43Speaker 4: shots a game. And it's unfortunate, you know, Bo, you know,
- 23:46Speaker 4: I thought one, I could understand P.I. The other one,
- 23:49Speaker 4: I thought he played it pretty well. And then he
- 23:51Speaker 4: gives up the touchdown late. And I think lesson learned,
- 23:53Speaker 4: like we've got to play these games in the SEC
- 23:57Speaker 4: until the clock strikes zero. And so I think lesson
- 24:01Speaker 4: learned on that front. But through it all, I think
- 24:04Speaker 4: SEC teams were seven and one at home last weekend.
- 24:08Speaker 4: So there's a pretty tough environment you have to go
- 24:10Speaker 4: into and play. We were the one road team that won.
- 24:14Speaker 4: And we take a lot of pride in that. They're
- 24:17Speaker 4: not always going to be pretty. We've got to find
- 24:20Speaker 4: ways to clean up the penalties. It's been now It's
- 24:23Speaker 4: 19 penalties in the last two weeks. And we can
- 24:26Speaker 4: control a lot of them. Some of them we can't.
- 24:28Speaker 4: We can control a lot of them. So, again, we've
- 24:31Speaker 4: got to get back to the emphasis as a coaching staff.
- 24:34Speaker 4: You guys have heard me say it. If you've heard
- 24:36Speaker 4: it once, you've heard it 100 times. You get what
- 24:38Speaker 4: you emphasize as a coach. We've got to reemphasize the
- 24:42Speaker 4: discipline in which we need to play the game. And, again,
- 24:46Speaker 4: I know there's been a lot made of Colin's penalty.
- 24:49Speaker 4: There probably could have been a couple more. truthfully. And
- 24:52Speaker 4: I was truthful with the team this morning. But that's
- 24:56Speaker 4: not who we are as a team. And that behavior
- 24:58Speaker 4: is unacceptable. I've met with the team about it. I've
- 25:01Speaker 4: met with Colin individually. I've met with Relique individually. And
- 25:05Speaker 4: so we'll handle those things internally. We take a lot
- 25:08Speaker 4: of pride in the way we play the game. We
- 25:10Speaker 4: take a lot of pride in us playing as a team.
- 25:14Speaker 4: I think one thing that does get unnoticed on Colin's
- 25:16Speaker 4: penalty is how quickly, you know, juice criers right there
- 25:20Speaker 4: telling them that's not what we do. And so again,
- 25:23Speaker 4: we've got to learn from that. I think Colin will,
- 25:25Speaker 4: I don't think any of those actions are indicative of
- 25:28Speaker 4: the character of the young men. Um, and I think
- 25:31Speaker 4: we'll see that as the season unfolds of who these
- 25:33Speaker 4: guys really are. And so we've got to learn from
- 25:36Speaker 4: the lesson though. Uh, we can't let the emotions of
- 25:38Speaker 4: the game get the betterment of us because we're going
- 25:40Speaker 4: to be in other hostile environments as the season goes on,
- 25:43Speaker 4: as we all know. Uh, and so we've got to
- 25:45Speaker 4: continue to learn from that. So, uh, Again, not indicative
- 25:50Speaker 4: of the team that we are or the character of
- 25:52Speaker 4: this team or what we're about. And so we'll handle
- 25:55Speaker 4: it internally and we'll continue to forge forward. As we
- 25:59Speaker 4: move forward, obviously heading into the bye week, I think
- 26:03Speaker 4: one thing about our team, and I felt this this
- 26:06Speaker 4: morning in the meeting, We've got a team full of
- 26:09Speaker 4: players that want to improve, that want to be coached,
- 26:12Speaker 4: that want to get better. And it's easy to point
- 26:14Speaker 4: to the high-level players, and it's great that those guys
- 26:17Speaker 4: want to be coached and they want to get better.
- 26:19Speaker 4: But we've got a lot of younger players that want
- 26:21Speaker 4: to improve and want to get better, and we're going
- 26:23Speaker 4: to need to. We need to continue to develop the
- 26:25Speaker 4: depth on this team, whether it's on offense, defense, or
- 26:30Speaker 4: on special teams. We need more young guys stepping up
- 26:33Speaker 4: that we can count on in those moments. Um, we,
- 26:36Speaker 4: we've got to be better at the specialist spot. Um,
- 26:38Speaker 4: you know, we, we really, you know, think a ton
- 26:41Speaker 4: of punter kicker snapper that was not their best game Saturday.
- 26:45Speaker 4: So we got to reinvest in those guys and then
- 26:47Speaker 4: we've got to get healthy as a football team. We're
- 26:49Speaker 4: a little banged up understandably. So, so there's, there's a
- 26:53Speaker 4: lot of moving parts this week of some guys getting healthy,
- 26:56Speaker 4: some guys working on their craft, some younger players. Can
- 26:59Speaker 4: we find a role for them all the while, uh,
- 27:02Speaker 4: you know starting to game plan for for OU here
- 27:04Speaker 4: in a couple weeks so a lot to do this
- 27:06Speaker 4: week um but again um it's it's been it's been
- 27:10Speaker 4: a good start to the season um you know to
- 27:13Speaker 4: be 4-0 we got a lot of meat left on
- 27:15Speaker 4: our bone as we go we know what's coming after
- 27:18Speaker 4: after the bye so we got to get ourselves ready
- 27:20Speaker 4: for that and then just as a side note I
- 27:23Speaker 4: think you all probably saw the um statement from the
- 27:26Speaker 4: SEC regarding the onside kick. So I don't really have
- 27:29Speaker 4: much more to say on that. You know, I've addressed
- 27:31Speaker 4: it with the Southeastern Conference. I've addressed it with John McDade,
- 27:35Speaker 4: the head of our officials. They've addressed the issue. So
- 27:39Speaker 4: I don't think there's much more to say on that. Okay.
- 27:42Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 27:43Speaker 1: We've already said what we were going to say. We've
- 27:45Speaker 1: read the statement as well. So anyway, hopefully there's no
- 27:48Speaker 1: other sticky wickets that come up, not only for the
- 27:52Speaker 1: players and coaches and fans, but for the officials. That
- 27:56Speaker 1: they get that right. And even sometimes, when they understand
- 28:01Speaker 1: the rule, they don't get it right. Reference last night
- 28:04Speaker 1: in Denver. Said the unhappy Rams fan. Wallace should have
- 28:09Speaker 1: been credited with the interception.
- 28:12Speaker 2: Wasn't.
- 28:15Speaker 1: Terry McCauley said it was not passing. It was OPI
- 28:18Speaker 1: with the grabbing of the shoulder pad. I think it
- 28:21Speaker 1: should have been a no call. On neither side. They're
- 28:23Speaker 1: both fighting for the ball.
- 28:24Speaker 3: You almost can get a drop for the times that
- 28:28Speaker 3: Terry McCauley has said this year. We can throw it
- 28:31Speaker 3: on this show. Yeah, guys, that's not a foul.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. He says that a lot.
- 28:36Speaker 3: But I was with him last night. I was with you.
- 28:38Speaker 3: I thought there were two holds right in the open
- 28:41Speaker 3: field on Bo Nix's scramble to the pylon.
- 28:43Speaker 2: Certainly could have called those. I thought the.
- 28:44Speaker 3: Make-up call was coming for the Rams. It never came.
- 28:46Speaker 1: I've given up on wondering about holding and non-holding calls.
- 28:50Speaker 1: Because I do agree with the assessment. Many people say
- 28:53Speaker 1: that you could literally call holding on about every play.
- 28:55Speaker 3: You could. And there were hands to the face on
- 28:57Speaker 3: those Tennessee old linemen.
- 28:58Speaker 2: My goodness.
- 28:59Speaker 3: My goodness. Those Texas defensive linemen were getting absolutely ragdolled
- 29:03Speaker 3: out there.
- 29:04Speaker 2: But they survived. They won it.
- 29:06Speaker 1: And it's on to the open date week. Getting ready
- 29:10Speaker 1: for the bye in the schedule and getting ready for Oklahoma.
- 29:12Speaker 1: We had a question yesterday. Before we go to break.
- 29:15Speaker 3: Yeah, David Walshack says, Craig, does Texas have to follow
- 29:17Speaker 3: the travel rules when they go to Dallas to play OU?
- 29:20Speaker 3: That game's, of course, in two weeks. Or can they
- 29:21Speaker 3: treat it like it's a home game?
- 29:23Speaker 1: Well, first of all, they're not the home team. They're
- 29:26Speaker 1: the visiting team. On odd number of years, Texas is
- 29:28Speaker 1: the visiting. I mean, even number of years, Texas is
- 29:31Speaker 1: the visiting team.
- 29:32Speaker 3: Thank goodness they're the visiting team this year with this schedule.
- 29:34Speaker 2: Yeah, they're the visiting team.
- 29:37Speaker 1: And the uh odd numbered years texas is the home
- 29:40Speaker 1: team so they're the visiting team uh and yes they
- 29:44Speaker 1: do have to follow the conference rules uh conference if
- 29:47Speaker 1: it's a conference game you're traveling i think it's 74
- 29:51Speaker 1: i think.
- 29:51Speaker 3: It's Yeah, that's what Sark said last week.
- 29:55Speaker 1: Yeah, they get 74 that you can carry. So, yes,
- 29:58Speaker 1: they do have to follow the rule on that. But
- 30:00Speaker 1: they will be the visiting team when they play in
- 30:02Speaker 1: Dallas against Oklahoma. All right, up next, speaking of football,
- 30:06Speaker 1: there is a football note, a Bill Belichickian football note
- 30:10Speaker 1: as part of Inconceivable.
- 30:13Speaker 2: That's next on 13 Under the Zone. He's in the shotgun.
- 30:33Speaker 3: He's still taking the.
- 30:36Speaker 2: Ball. He's going to throw the ball.
- 30:38Speaker 3: He's going to throw the ball.
- 30:41Speaker 10: Deep down the middle of the field, it's caught at
- 30:46Speaker 10: the 40.
- 30:46Speaker 2: Time expires as Reddy Stewart tackles him.
- 30:48Speaker 10: The Ravens are hoping that they've got him.
- 30:51Speaker 2: They want the.
- 30:51Speaker 3: Second to try a long field goal.
- 30:55Speaker 10: Wow.
- 30:58Speaker 3: I'm saying.
- 30:59Speaker 10: Baltimore quarterback number eight called timeout with.
- 31:06Speaker 4: One second on.
- 31:08Speaker 2: The line.
- 31:09Speaker 3: Oh, my goodness.
- 31:10Speaker 2: They are going to get a chance.
- 31:12Speaker 3: The Michigan, Western Michigan game.
- 31:15Speaker 10: Oh, my goodness.
- 31:16Speaker 8: 57 yards.
- 31:17Speaker 10: 56 yards. The kick's away.
- 31:18Speaker 2: The kick is up and the kick is good.
- 31:20Speaker 10: And the Ravens have stolen the game. That's unbelievable. That
- 31:32Speaker 10: is unbelievable.
- 31:34Speaker 3: Wow.
- 31:37Speaker 4: What a dagger.
- 31:38Speaker 10: The timeout that no one could see. Tyler Luke, 56 yards,
- 31:44Speaker 10: a walk-off, and the Ravens win 34-31.
- 31:47Speaker 2: Oh, that'll crush you.
- 31:50Speaker 4: That'll crush your soul. That will crush your soul.
- 31:56Speaker 2: Well said.
- 31:58Speaker 1: Brandon, Babe Laufenberg. There, it would crush your soul. And
- 32:02Speaker 1: so from the Department of Things Could Always Be Worse,
- 32:05Speaker 1: for Longhorn fans, and I've read a lot of comments
- 32:08Speaker 1: from a lot of unhappy fans about the Longhorns getting
- 32:12Speaker 1: out of Knoxville with a 20-17 win over Tennessee. Things
- 32:15Speaker 1: could always be worse. Second hour of the program here
- 32:19Speaker 1: on 13 Under the Zone. Craig Way alongside the producer,
- 32:23Speaker 1: Jake Herman. That was just, again, A soul-crushing, as Babe
- 32:28Speaker 1: Laufenberg put it, soul-crushing loss, as heard on 98.1 FM
- 32:32Speaker 1: KVET yesterday. So, Cowboys are 1-2 with that loss to
- 32:39Speaker 1: the Baltimore Ravens. A game where Dallas jumped out in
- 32:41Speaker 1: front 10-0. Baltimore came back. They were up by two scores.
- 32:45Speaker 1: Cowboys came back, took a lead. Baltimore reclaimed the lead.
- 32:49Speaker 1: Then the Cowboys reclaimed the lead. And then it was
- 32:52Speaker 1: tied again. Dallas had a chance late in the game
- 32:55Speaker 1: to win it. It had to settle for a field goal.
- 32:58Speaker 1: And with seven seconds to go, you thought that time
- 33:01Speaker 1: would run out.
- 33:02Speaker 2: Long pass downfield. And it.
- 33:07Speaker 1: Was ruled that time was called with one second. Lamar
- 33:13Speaker 1: Jackson was able to get the attention. The officials called
- 33:15Speaker 1: time with one second left.
- 33:16Speaker 2: Tyler Luke.
- 33:18Speaker 1: From Lovejoy, Texas, from Lucas, Texas, was a Lovejoy Leopard.
- 33:26Speaker 1: Knocks home the game-winning 54-yard field goal. Baltimore wins it
- 33:31Speaker 1: by a score of 34-31. Some gut-wrenching defeat. So, with
- 33:36Speaker 1: that in mind, here's Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer with
- 33:39Speaker 1: his thoughts on the loss.
- 33:40Speaker 11: You know, bottom line is we need to keep that
- 33:42Speaker 11: ball in front of us. But at the end of
- 33:45Speaker 11: the day, really just... Feel bad for the guys. You know,
- 33:49Speaker 11: we played hard. We fought back. Long trip. Had our
- 33:52Speaker 11: chances to win. And unfortunately, we didn't get it done.
- 33:55Speaker 1: Long trip indeed down to Rio is where that game
- 33:57Speaker 1: was played. He was also asked about his thought process
- 34:00Speaker 1: of how those final 30 seconds transpired.
- 34:02Speaker 11: Yeah, we thought we were going to score a touchdown.
- 34:04Speaker 11: You know, we thought we were going to score the touchdown.
- 34:07Speaker 11: And we moved the ball really well down there. We
- 34:09Speaker 11: got to find a way to punch it in. I
- 34:11Speaker 11: got to call some better plays to get it in.
- 34:14Speaker 11: And then, you know, of course... You know, when it
- 34:16Speaker 11: became fourth down, we had to take the points. But
- 34:21Speaker 11: so proud of this team, this group, young men. They
- 34:24Speaker 11: laid it all on the line. I mean, I know
- 34:26Speaker 11: we got beat to hell. I don't have all the
- 34:27Speaker 11: injury reports. You guys can ask me about that. But,
- 34:30Speaker 11: you know, we got beat up pretty good. And next
- 34:33Speaker 11: man up was real tonight.
- 34:35Speaker 1: There were a couple of late zone throws to George
- 34:38Speaker 1: Pickens that just the communication seemed to be off. And
- 34:41Speaker 1: so he was asked, what was the disconnect on those
- 34:43Speaker 1: two late throws? Again, we called a quick out. I'd
- 34:46Speaker 1: probably overcoach Dak on that one, you know, because we
- 34:48Speaker 1: had the points. And I'd probably overcoach him on that
- 34:51Speaker 1: because it had to go to, with the time, no timeouts,
- 34:53Speaker 1: it had to go to GP or throw it away.
- 34:56Speaker 2: Yes, he was throwing it away.
- 34:57Speaker 4: Yep.
- 34:57Speaker 11: And again, that's on me. I overcoached him.
- 35:00Speaker 2: Okay. All right.
- 35:01Speaker 1: They didn't score early, but then made some offensive adjustments
- 35:05Speaker 1: that helped turn.
- 35:05Speaker 2: The game around.
- 35:06Speaker 11: Yeah, we stuck with the plan down there, Clarence. You know,
- 35:09Speaker 11: I mean, we really liked the movement play to Dak's left.
- 35:13Speaker 11: They actually lined up wrong. When you look at the defense,
- 35:15Speaker 11: they lined up wrong. I wish I would have had
- 35:16Speaker 11: a run on there because it would have walked in. But,
- 35:20Speaker 11: you know, that was the plan. We wanted to get
- 35:22Speaker 11: down there. They played a real heavy front. You know,
- 35:24Speaker 11: they put in six big guys along the edge, and
- 35:26Speaker 11: we liked some of the matchups that we had on
- 35:28Speaker 11: the outside with our guys. And, you know, again, at
- 35:31Speaker 11: the end of the day, you know, didn't make enough
- 35:34Speaker 11: plays to win as a football team.
- 35:36Speaker 2: Yeah, all right.
- 35:39Speaker 1: Was there something different that the defense could have done lately? Remember,
- 35:43Speaker 1: they had a couple of fourth down stops, including one
- 35:45Speaker 1: at the goal line, really big. But in that last sequence,
- 35:50Speaker 1: when Baltimore was able to come up and get the
- 35:53Speaker 1: big throw downfield and set up the game winning field
- 35:55Speaker 1: goal try.
- 35:57Speaker 11: No, I like the call. We wanted to stay sticky.
- 35:59Speaker 11: But at the end of the day, you know, they
- 36:00Speaker 11: ran two ends. We have actually– this is a play
- 36:03Speaker 11: we run quite a bit of, and the bottom line
- 36:05Speaker 11: is you've got to make the ball go to the
- 36:06Speaker 11: first one, not the layer that they hit to Zay Flowers.
- 36:11Speaker 11: And so that's where we have to be better. But
- 36:14Speaker 11: I was good with the call. We just got to
- 36:15Speaker 11: execute in those situations. And I think if that's the case,
- 36:19Speaker 11: we're going to overtime.
- 36:20Speaker 2: Yeah, okay.
- 36:20Speaker 1: All right, and then finally one more this hour from Shadi.
- 36:23Speaker 1: Shadi asked about what did he say to the team
- 36:27Speaker 1: after suffering a defeat like that?
- 36:29Speaker 11: I was very honest with him. You know, I told them,
- 36:32Speaker 11: you know, this one hurts. And I was sorry. I
- 36:35Speaker 11: was sorry that we didn't find a way to win.
- 36:36Speaker 11: I was proud of them, how hard they played, how
- 36:41Speaker 11: many guys had to step up and make plays and
- 36:44Speaker 11: move in and whatnot. It was back and forth. It
- 36:47Speaker 11: was a hell of a football game if you didn't
- 36:48Speaker 11: care who won. But I told them I was proud
- 36:51Speaker 11: of them, but I also told them that it's supposed
- 36:52Speaker 11: to hurt. You know, we have to find a way
- 36:55Speaker 11: to win football games. And came up a couple points short.
- 36:59Speaker 1: Same thing with the Texans. Couple points short. They had
- 37:03Speaker 1: a 17-16 lead late. The kickoff, however, sailed into the
- 37:06Speaker 1: end zone on the fly for a touchback, which brought
- 37:09Speaker 1: it out to the 35. And then they were able
- 37:11Speaker 1: to get the ball downfield in time for a game-winning
- 37:15Speaker 1: field goal. And so D'Amico Ryan's looking at the 19-17
- 37:18Speaker 1: defeat and seeing his team at 0-3.
- 37:20Speaker 12: Yeah, for us, it's 0-3 start. As a team, wherever
- 37:24Speaker 12: we are, it all starts with me. So right now,
- 37:27Speaker 12: it's not good enough from our perspective, but I like
- 37:30Speaker 12: the way our week went. Our process went well this week.
- 37:34Speaker 11: Our guys connected.
- 37:35Speaker 12: Our guys brought the joyful intensity that I was asking
- 37:38Speaker 12: them to bring throughout the week and also today on
- 37:41Speaker 12: game day. We came up short today, and I got
- 37:44Speaker 12: to get back to the drawing board, and I got
- 37:46Speaker 12: to do a better job.
- 37:47Speaker 2: Okay.
- 37:48Speaker 1: Next, he was asked about trying to draw on last
- 37:53Speaker 1: year's experience.
- 37:54Speaker 12: Remember, they had the slow start last year. 0-3 is
- 37:56Speaker 12: where we are right now. So the only way we
- 37:58Speaker 12: can do anything about it is go through it. We're
- 38:02Speaker 12: going through it right now. It's adversity.
- 38:04Speaker 2: It happens.
- 38:05Speaker 12: And for me, it starts with me. So I've got
- 38:08Speaker 12: to do a better job getting our guys ready to roll.
- 38:10Speaker 1: And D'Amico's a defensive guy, so how does his defense
- 38:13Speaker 1: force more takeaways?
- 38:14Speaker 12: Defense did a great job of taking the football away.
- 38:17Speaker 12: That's what we have been missing, some turnovers. So we
- 38:19Speaker 12: were able to take the ball away three times, saw
- 38:21Speaker 12: the D-line play well. At times, they did a good
- 38:25Speaker 12: job of what we asked them to do.
- 38:26Speaker 2: Okay.
- 38:28Speaker 1: That's where it is on that. And so the Cowboys
- 38:34Speaker 1: take the loss to the Ravens and then have to
- 38:40Speaker 1: come home after playing down in Rio, long flight back,
- 38:45Speaker 1: and they have to come back home, do the Cowboys,
- 38:49Speaker 1: turn it around.
- 38:50Speaker 2: And guess who they play next? The Houston Texans. Big one.
- 38:55Speaker 3: Been circled for a while. And I tell you what,
- 39:00Speaker 3: you don't want to see the Texans next week, I
- 39:02Speaker 3: don't think. Again, I'm really surprised they're 0-3. They've been really,
- 39:06Speaker 3: really disappointing on offense. But that is not who you
- 39:09Speaker 3: want to see if you're the Dallas Cowboys. Coming home
- 39:12Speaker 3: and having to deal with that team in that building.
- 39:15Speaker 2: Think about this. The Texans are really struggling on offense.
- 39:20Speaker 1: The Cowboys had a couple of nice stops on defense,
- 39:22Speaker 1: but still struggling on defense.
- 39:24Speaker 2: So you know what we got. We have the stoppable
- 39:26Speaker 2: force against the movable object. That's right. Next week.
- 39:30Speaker 3: That's right. We've got, we've got CJ Stroud and a
- 39:33Speaker 3: wide receiver room the way it's banged up right now.
- 39:36Speaker 3: I mean, they've got guys out there. I know they're,
- 39:39Speaker 3: I know they're doing their best, but those guys aren't
- 39:41Speaker 3: starting on a lot of NFL teams.
- 39:43Speaker 7: Right.
- 39:43Speaker 3: Against the secondary for the Cowboys.
- 39:45Speaker 2: They're almost out of bodies.
- 39:47Speaker 3: That literally are going to have to bring guys off
- 39:49Speaker 3: the practice squads.
- 39:50Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 39:51Speaker 2: It's a tough deal for them there. But they do
- 39:52Speaker 2: play at noon. And you'll hear that on Sunday. All right.
- 39:59Speaker 1: Coming up, we'll shift back to college. We have some
- 40:02Speaker 1: college football notes. We'll hear more from Longhorns head coach
- 40:04Speaker 1: Steve Sarkeesian when we continue on a Longhorns Monday. here
- 40:07Speaker 1: on Sports Radio AM 13 under the zone on the
- 40:09Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app.
- 40:16Speaker 2: I would not.
- 40:17Speaker 1: Say that Duran Duran was one of my favorite bands,
- 40:21Speaker 1: but they were there in my wheelhouse in the 80s
- 40:23Speaker 1: when I was in school. But I would say this.
- 40:27Speaker 1: This is probably my favorite Duran Duran song. I know
- 40:30Speaker 1: a lot of people like Hungry Like the Wolf or,
- 40:32Speaker 1: you know, some other ones. But Beautiful Kill, you know,
- 40:34Speaker 1: things like that. But Rio is probably like that one.
- 40:38Speaker 3: A friend of mine saw Duran Duran when they were
- 40:41Speaker 3: at Austin City Limits Music Festival a few years ago.
- 40:43Speaker 5: Yep.
- 40:43Speaker 3: Said they played Hungry Like the Wolf three times. Three times.
- 40:47Speaker 3: Once at the beginning, once at the end. And I
- 40:50Speaker 3: guess they had some.
- 40:51Speaker 2: Time left over.
- 40:52Speaker 3: He said, do you want to hear it one more time?
- 40:53Speaker 3: Kind of said, yes!
- 40:55Speaker 1: That's when you run out of your catalog is what
- 40:58Speaker 1: happens there with that.
- 41:01Speaker 3: Okay.
- 41:02Speaker 2: Obviously, the Cowboys lose in Rio.
- 41:04Speaker 1: Longhorns win in Knoxville because Knoxville and Rio are exactly alike,
- 41:08Speaker 1: as you know. Anyway, and Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkeesian
- 41:13Speaker 1: from his weekly news conference heard a little bit last hour.
- 41:15Speaker 2: Here's some more.
- 41:16Speaker 1: Question about protections from the offensive line and the timing
- 41:23Speaker 1: of this. the protection calls. After all, Arch Manning was
- 41:27Speaker 1: sacked six times. Does it fall on the center, Connor Robertson?
- 41:30Speaker 1: Does it fall on the O-line overall? Does it fall
- 41:33Speaker 1: on Arch? Those questions put to SART.
- 41:36Speaker 4: Clearly it wasn't good enough Saturday, right? It's a combination
- 41:40Speaker 4: of things. Some of them are the quarterback, some of
- 41:42Speaker 4: them the center. Some of them are the other guys
- 41:44Speaker 4: executing what they're told to do. And so it was
- 41:47Speaker 4: a combination of things. It clearly was not good enough Saturday.
- 41:50Speaker 3: Okay.
- 41:50Speaker 9: All right.
- 41:51Speaker 1: He was asked about the you know, the, the, and
- 41:54Speaker 1: we heard it last hour and I'm talking about addressing
- 41:57Speaker 1: the unsportsmanlike penalties and, uh, the one for Colin Simmons and, and, uh,
- 42:02Speaker 1: other penalties as well. And also didn't like the, the gesture, uh,
- 42:07Speaker 1: that really Brown did after, after he had scored.
- 42:11Speaker 2: Um, and so he said he had spoken.
- 42:14Speaker 1: To them individually and that it has to be a
- 42:17Speaker 1: stepping up and that teammates have to hold them accountable.
- 42:20Speaker 2: He said, that's why he liked that.
- 42:22Speaker 1: Justin Cryer was over there immediately talking to Colin when
- 42:27Speaker 1: the flag was coming out, saying that's.
- 42:28Speaker 2: Not how we do it. We don't do that. But
- 42:31Speaker 2: he drew the flag anyway.
- 42:33Speaker 1: And so he was asked, it was our friend Cedric
- 42:35Speaker 1: Olin from the Austin American Statesman, is there a concern
- 42:38Speaker 1: level when it's upperclassmen committing these types of penalties, guys
- 42:44Speaker 1: who you would think would definitely know better?
- 42:46Speaker 4: I agree with that. You know, again, I think there's
- 42:51Speaker 4: a fine line. And I know what I said Saturday,
- 42:55Speaker 4: and I'm not doubling back on that, but I think
- 43:00Speaker 4: it's important to know, like, turn on every NFL game,
- 43:03Speaker 4: you know, and what they now tolerate from a celebration standpoint.
- 43:08Speaker 4: The rules have become more lenient in college football of
- 43:11Speaker 4: what guys are allowed to do. You know, it wasn't
- 43:13Speaker 4: very long ago where college players couldn't do anything and
- 43:16Speaker 4: the flag was out. The rules have become more lenient.
- 43:19Speaker 4: We have got to do a better job of celebrating
- 43:23Speaker 4: with one another. I don't want to take our stinger.
- 43:26Speaker 4: I don't want to take away the excitement of the game.
- 43:29Speaker 4: But the moment you start to demean an opponent, the
- 43:32Speaker 4: flags are going to come out. And I think that's the,
- 43:37Speaker 4: you can call it a fine line, but it's really
- 43:38Speaker 4: not very fine. It's pretty clear. But understanding that of
- 43:44Speaker 4: what is acceptable and what is not, what is acceptable
- 43:47Speaker 4: from a rules perspective, what is acceptable from a program
- 43:50Speaker 4: perspective of what we stand for, what we're about. If
- 43:54Speaker 4: you just put all that energy into your teammates, you
- 43:57Speaker 4: almost can do just about what you want outside of
- 44:00Speaker 4: it not being an orchestrated dance together or something like that.
- 44:04Speaker 4: So my concern level is one that I think I've
- 44:08Speaker 4: got a team full of guys that take the messaging
- 44:13Speaker 4: pretty well. I mean, when I'm emphatic about something, when
- 44:16Speaker 4: I'm very clear on something, I think they take that
- 44:18Speaker 4: messaging and I think it starts with our upperclassmen. So
- 44:23Speaker 4: I'm not concerned that they're not going to understand the message. But, again,
- 44:28Speaker 4: emotions can run high. So I've got to make sure
- 44:31Speaker 4: that we continue to reinforce it. It can't be a
- 44:33Speaker 4: one-time message in a team meeting or at the locker
- 44:36Speaker 4: room at halftime of the game and then in a
- 44:37Speaker 4: team meeting today and think it's just going to be okay.
- 44:40Speaker 4: I've got to reinforce it as we work our way
- 44:42Speaker 4: throughout the season.
- 44:44Speaker 2: Okay.
- 44:45Speaker 1: Next, asked for an update on Hollywood Smothers, who had
- 44:48Speaker 1: been upgraded– from questionable to probable, but ended up not playing.
- 44:52Speaker 4: He was an emergency for us Saturday. I felt like
- 44:55Speaker 4: he probably could have gone. But again, what Relique had
- 45:00Speaker 4: done in practice and Derek getting himself back, if I
- 45:04Speaker 4: could have gotten out of that game with him not
- 45:08Speaker 4: re-injuring himself, I think it would behoove us for the
- 45:12Speaker 4: remainder of the season. And so we were able to
- 45:14Speaker 4: do that. I think he'll be fine in a couple
- 45:17Speaker 4: weeks when we play OU.
- 45:18Speaker 1: Linda texted me right after that. She was listening to
- 45:20Speaker 1: the line. She goes, I like his use of the
- 45:21Speaker 1: word behoove. He used behoove there. It does behoove them
- 45:25Speaker 1: to do that right. Okay, which gets it back to
- 45:29Speaker 1: accountability as well and how team leadership steps in to
- 45:35Speaker 1: help in the form of taking accountability for mistakes, not
- 45:39Speaker 1: just the unsportsmanlike, conduct calls uh but other penalties and
- 45:43Speaker 1: then just other shortcomings for the team you.
- 45:45Speaker 4: Talk a lot about accountability and you know accountability is
- 45:49Speaker 4: taking responsibility for your own actions and um i think
- 45:53Speaker 4: that's that's that's a great trait to have as a
- 45:57Speaker 4: man and and and as we go into you know
- 46:00Speaker 4: from teenagers into manhood of what does that look like
- 46:06Speaker 4: and take them or take any, you know, have an accountability,
- 46:08Speaker 4: take them responsibility for own actions. None of us are perfect.
- 46:12Speaker 4: We all, we all make mistakes at varying degrees. Some
- 46:15Speaker 4: of our mistakes are in the spotlight of millions of people. Um,
- 46:19Speaker 4: that doesn't mean that we still don't have to take
- 46:20Speaker 4: responsibility for our actions. And so, um, we do talk
- 46:24Speaker 4: about that a lot and that's a lot of what
- 46:25Speaker 4: we do in the off season, but it doesn't, again,
- 46:28Speaker 4: it doesn't go away once the season begins and, So again,
- 46:32Speaker 4: I think that our guys do do that. I think
- 46:36Speaker 4: to some degree, sometimes they take too much ownership, too
- 46:39Speaker 4: much responsibility when some others need to do their part too.
- 46:43Speaker 4: But in the end, you know, I do think it's
- 46:45Speaker 4: something that we touch on. We as coaches try to
- 46:48Speaker 4: model that to the best of our ability as well.
- 46:53Speaker 4: But again, we're not perfect and, and show me, show
- 46:57Speaker 4: me somebody who's perfect and, and There's been one of
- 47:00Speaker 4: us on this planet that's been able to be perfect. But, again,
- 47:04Speaker 4: taking responsibility for actions, being accountable for actions, I think
- 47:08Speaker 4: is a great trait to have.
- 47:09Speaker 5: All right.
- 47:09Speaker 2: He was next asked about this balance thing.
- 47:12Speaker 1: There's a lot of groaning and moaning about how the team,
- 47:17Speaker 1: you know, had this mistake and that mistake and these
- 47:19Speaker 1: problems and these problems.
- 47:22Speaker 2: And they're 4-0.
- 47:23Speaker 1: And they beat the number one team in the country
- 47:25Speaker 1: at the time, and they got a road win in
- 47:27Speaker 1: conference play against the number 14 team, and there's certainly
- 47:31Speaker 1: no apologies for doing any of those things. It doesn't
- 47:33Speaker 1: mean they've been clean and clear, and Sark has been
- 47:37Speaker 1: perfectly clear about that, that they've got a lot to do.
- 47:39Speaker 1: So how does he and the coaching staff and the
- 47:41Speaker 1: message to the players balance out the fact that they
- 47:45Speaker 1: are 4-0 with what still needs to be done to improve?
- 47:49Speaker 4: Somebody in here asked me a question yesterday, maybe before
- 47:52Speaker 4: the season about, um, do I visit with NFL head
- 47:57Speaker 4: coaches and do I, you know, what, what does that
- 47:59Speaker 4: look like with you? You know, how do you plan
- 48:02Speaker 4: for a long season, things of that nature. And, you know,
- 48:05Speaker 4: I remember answering that, talking to Andy Reed, right. Talking
- 48:08Speaker 4: to Bill Belichick, talking to Kyle Shanahan, talking to Sean
- 48:11Speaker 4: McVay about, How do you be at your best in November, December,
- 48:17Speaker 4: and January? And this idea that we're not a finished
- 48:21Speaker 4: product in September. But that doesn't mean we don't want
- 48:25Speaker 4: to win every game, right? But the idea that we're improving,
- 48:29Speaker 4: that we're getting better, and maybe we're finding the right
- 48:31Speaker 4: mix of players or schematically what are we doing or
- 48:35Speaker 4: individual players developing at their craft. So we want to win,
- 48:40Speaker 4: but yet we also want to be on this trajectory
- 48:43Speaker 4: as the season goes on that, man, we're at our
- 48:45Speaker 4: best November, December when we're obviously going to need to be.
- 48:50Speaker 4: Our schedule is a little bit unique where it feels
- 48:52Speaker 4: like every week it's... We're playing a top 20 opponent,
- 48:56Speaker 4: and we need to kind of be at our best
- 48:58Speaker 4: every time that we go. But this idea that, man,
- 49:01Speaker 4: it's great being 4-0, and we're finding a way to
- 49:03Speaker 4: win a couple tough games. But also, I know our
- 49:07Speaker 4: best is out there, and I know that we've got
- 49:09Speaker 4: a lot to strive for in all three phases. Schematically,
- 49:13Speaker 4: we've got a lot to strive for from a depth standpoint,
- 49:16Speaker 4: and individual players can improve, and they will improve as
- 49:19Speaker 4: long as they're coachable and as as long as we
- 49:22Speaker 4: emphasize the right things for them to improve.
- 49:24Speaker 1: Upon understand this uh at at a monday news conference
- 49:29Speaker 1: you do have like representatives of the local I don't
- 49:34Speaker 1: want to say legitimate because it's all legitimate, but the
- 49:36Speaker 1: local traditional was the word I was looking for. Traditional media,
- 49:41Speaker 1: meaning Austin American Statesman, meaning the local TVs, the local radios.
- 49:47Speaker 1: And then you also have the fan sites who were there,
- 49:49Speaker 1: those reporters who were there as well. And a lot
- 49:54Speaker 1: of what the fan sites lean into is the impact
- 49:58Speaker 1: on and cause effect of wins and losses on recruiting.
- 50:02Speaker 1: because they're always looking ahead to the recruiting side of things.
- 50:06Speaker 1: So with this being an open date on the schedule,
- 50:09Speaker 1: with it being a bi-week, Sark was asked, is there
- 50:12Speaker 1: a renewed recruiting emphasis this week for his staff?
- 50:15Speaker 4: I think it is. That's a great point because recruiting,
- 50:18Speaker 4: you know, where your days are and how many days
- 50:21Speaker 4: you have in the fall have been limited. Um, and
- 50:24Speaker 4: so maximizing those days, I think are very important. Um,
- 50:29Speaker 4: You know, I know like for me, I need to
- 50:31Speaker 4: do a really good job in Dallas and in Houston
- 50:34Speaker 4: this week, as well as seeing a couple of our
- 50:36Speaker 4: national guys. The senior recruiting is not done. You know, there's,
- 50:42Speaker 4: you know, back in the day, this is when guys
- 50:44Speaker 4: used to get recruited. This is when they actually evaluated
- 50:47Speaker 4: them their senior year and You can see the development
- 50:50Speaker 4: of a player from his junior year to his senior year,
- 50:52Speaker 4: and then you visit him in January or December and January,
- 50:56Speaker 4: and you sign him in February. We've sped this whole
- 50:58Speaker 4: thing up, but players haven't stopped improving from their junior
- 51:02Speaker 4: year to the senior year. So we're constantly evaluating this
- 51:06Speaker 4: class of where we can upgrade the class and where
- 51:09Speaker 4: we can find those players that have made that jump.
- 51:11Speaker 4: to go along with next year's class and seeing those
- 51:14Speaker 4: guys in person. So we've got a lot of work
- 51:17Speaker 4: to do this week, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday of, of seeing players.
- 51:21Speaker 4: And it's not just me. It's the, it's the assistant coaches.
- 51:24Speaker 4: It's the recruiting department of, of getting all that done. So,
- 51:27Speaker 4: but it is to your point with only one weekend
- 51:29Speaker 4: to do it, man, we we've got to be, we've
- 51:31Speaker 4: got to be spot on.
- 51:34Speaker 2: Okay.
- 51:34Speaker 1: So there it is from a Longhorns head coach, Steve Sarkeesian.
- 51:38Speaker 1: We'll hear more from Sark coming up next hour. Coming
- 51:42Speaker 1: up next, some college football notes, renewed rankings, renewed projections,
- 51:51Speaker 1: renewed power ratings, all that other.
- 51:54Speaker 2: Kind of stuff. We'll get you up to date on
- 51:55Speaker 2: all of that when we continue here.
- 51:56Speaker 1: On a Longhorns Monday on Sports Radio AM 13 Under
- 51:59Speaker 1: the Zone and the iHeartRadio app. Here on a Longhorns
- 52:05Speaker 1: Monday on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone. I'm
- 52:07Speaker 1: curious as to your reasoning for this particular selection.
- 52:11Speaker 3: Well, Craig, of course, as a North Carolina born and
- 52:17Speaker 3: raised native yourself, you got to Texas as quickly as
- 52:20Speaker 3: you could, of course. Yep. It is National North Carolina Day.
- 52:24Speaker 13: It is?
- 52:25Speaker 3: According to the National Day calendar by my good friends
- 52:27Speaker 3: in Mandan.
- 52:28Speaker 2: Okay.
- 52:29Speaker 3: And Randy Travis coming from Marshfield, North Carolina.
- 52:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 52:32Speaker 2: Marshfield, by the way, west east of Charlotte.
- 52:37Speaker 5: Okay.
- 52:37Speaker 2: On U.S.
- 52:38Speaker 1: 74, kind of between Wadesboro and Rockingham, I believe. Yeah,
- 52:44Speaker 1: it's a small place, Marshville. I did not know that,
- 52:48Speaker 1: that it was National North Carolina. It's weird. Do they
- 52:52Speaker 1: have a day like that for every state in the
- 52:55Speaker 1: United States? You know, I've seen a few others. I've
- 52:58Speaker 1: seen a few others. I didn't bring up National.
- 53:00Speaker 3: I wonder what day is National Texas Day. Would it
- 53:03Speaker 3: not be Texas Independence Day?
- 53:05Speaker 2: Well, it might be. March 2nd, maybe.
- 53:08Speaker 1: I would say that there are a lot of, you know,
- 53:12Speaker 1: Texas fans who would say every day is National Texas Day.
- 53:16Speaker 3: February 1st, according to the National Day calendar.
- 53:18Speaker 2: All right. So there you are. I didn't forget about this.
- 53:21Speaker 2: I just didn't have time to do it. Inconceivable.
- 53:23Speaker 1: But I had teased it. And so, as they say
- 53:26Speaker 1: in the radio biz, it's important to pay off the tease.
- 53:29Speaker 1: Bill Belichick, that Bill Belichick, the one who's the coach
- 53:33Speaker 1: of the North Carolina Tar Heels since this is National
- 53:36Speaker 1: North Carolina Day.
- 53:38Speaker 2: Through his attorneys, David L. Fine and Peter J.
- 53:43Speaker 1: Hamilton is demanding a jury trial and filed a third-party
- 53:48Speaker 1: complaint against Levesque Builders, a local contractor, as part of
- 53:53Speaker 1: his response to a lawsuit filed in April by Island Painter.
- 54:00Speaker 1: By the way, this is taking place in Nantucket Island
- 54:04Speaker 1: off the coast of Massachusetts. There's a painter who lives
- 54:08Speaker 1: there named Andrew Jackson.
- 54:10Speaker 2: That's his name.
- 54:12Speaker 1: Former New England Patriots head coach and current North Carolina
- 54:15Speaker 1: coach Bill Belichick states in the complaint that Levesque Builders
- 54:18Speaker 1: was responsible for ensuring all work done at his property
- 54:23Speaker 1: was completed safely. The lawsuit from Jackson was filed on
- 54:28Speaker 1: April 2nd, seeking nearly $ 300, 000 after he allegedly slipped and
- 54:30Speaker 1: fell from working at 45 Fair Street, which is owned
- 54:37Speaker 1: and managed by Belichick's Under 45 Fair Street LLC. Jackson
- 54:44Speaker 1: said he fell as a result of unsafe conditions on
- 54:46Speaker 1: the property. He describes as the placement, use, and or
- 54:50Speaker 1: maintenance of plastic sheeting or coverings and other unsafe site
- 54:56Speaker 1: conditions in the work area. So, according to Belichick's camp
- 55:02Speaker 1: and his third-party complaint, they believe, regardless of whether the
- 55:04Speaker 1: man was injured or not, Belichick should not be on
- 55:07Speaker 1: the hook for any of the damages granted. In the complaint,
- 55:10Speaker 1: Belichick's camp reiterates that Levesque Builders was hired to oversee
- 55:15Speaker 1: all work done on the property, and that Levesque was
- 55:18Speaker 1: the entity who hired Jackson as a subcontractor in the
- 55:20Speaker 1: first place, thus making Levesque Builders the ones liable for
- 55:25Speaker 1: paying post, if not if not all of the damages
- 55:28Speaker 1: awarded in court.
- 55:30Speaker 3: Better program builder than structure builder, apparently.
- 55:33Speaker 8: I guess.
- 55:34Speaker 2: Might be something like that.
- 55:35Speaker 6: Okay.
- 55:36Speaker 1: Wanted to get to college football stuff. First of all,
- 55:41Speaker 1: the new top 25 rankings came out yesterday. Longhorn's still
- 55:46Speaker 1: number one in both polls. In fact, the top four
- 55:50Speaker 1: are identical both in the AP and the coaches poll. Texas, Georgia,
- 55:53Speaker 1: Notre Dame, Miami. And it's not even close. A lot
- 55:57Speaker 1: of people thought Longwood might drop out of the one
- 55:59Speaker 1: spot or might be close. Really wasn't close. A lead
- 56:03Speaker 1: of almost 100 points over Georgia. They got 62 first
- 56:06Speaker 1: place votes. Georgia got six. Miami got one. Indiana got one.
- 56:10Speaker 1: Georgia's number two. Notre Dame three. Miami four. That's in
- 56:13Speaker 1: both polls. In the coaches, in the AP, Ohio State
- 56:17Speaker 1: is five and Indiana is six. Other way around in
- 56:19Speaker 1: the coaches. Indiana five. Ohio State six. Alabama seven in
- 56:22Speaker 1: both rankings. Florida eight. Ole Miss 9 in the AP,
- 56:27Speaker 1: BYU 10. BYU 9 in the coaches, Texas Tech is 10.
- 56:32Speaker 1: LSU is 11 in both rankings, Tech is 12 in
- 56:34Speaker 1: the AP, Ole Miss 12 in the coaches. Both polls
- 56:38Speaker 1: have Utah 13, Iowa 14, Oregon 15, Mississippi State up
- 56:44Speaker 1: to number 16 in the AP and popping into the
- 56:48Speaker 1: poll for the first time. The coaches also at number 16.
- 56:50Speaker 1: Tennessee dropped three spots. to number 17. There's 17 in
- 56:54Speaker 1: both sets of rankings. UCLA number 18 in both polls.
- 56:58Speaker 1: Oklahoma State is in the top 25. Remember what everybody
- 57:03Speaker 1: was saying about them after they lost to Tulsa in
- 57:05Speaker 1: week one? That's what a win over Oregon will get you,
- 57:07Speaker 1: and then they turn around and have won.
- 57:10Speaker 3: Two more games. Yeah, it's going to be really interesting
- 57:13Speaker 3: in a few, well, not a few months, but a
- 57:16Speaker 3: few weeks, if they are still a one or a
- 57:18Speaker 3: two loss team, because that resume... is going to have
- 57:20Speaker 3: some really good wins and that really bad loss.
- 57:23Speaker 1: Oklahoma State is 19 in the AP, SMU 19 in
- 57:27Speaker 1: the coaches. Houston, number 20 in both polls. SMU 21
- 57:31Speaker 1: in the AP. Duke, number 21 in the coaches. Boise State,
- 57:36Speaker 1: number 22 in the AP. Penn State, 22.
- 57:39Speaker 2: In the coaches.
- 57:39Speaker 1: UCLA, number 23 in both. Kentucky, number 24 in the AP. Michigan,
- 57:47Speaker 1: still in the rankings. They're number 24 in the coaches,
- 57:51Speaker 1: Missouri number 25 in the AP and in the coaches. Yes,
- 57:56Speaker 1: Michigan is still in the rankings, despite what happened at
- 58:01Speaker 1: the end of their matchup with Iowa. This is, of course,
- 58:06Speaker 1: Iowa Hawkeyes had their radio network call. Michigan had its
- 58:09Speaker 1: radio network call. My friend Brett Dolan was calling the
- 58:11Speaker 1: game for touchdown radio, national broadcast.
- 58:17Speaker 2: And then you have the Iowa students as well. Give
- 58:19Speaker 2: this a listen.
- 58:20Speaker 14: This is it, Hank Brown. A defining Iowa moment. Weights
- 58:26Speaker 14: in the wings. Can he snatch it? Empty in the backfield.
- 58:34Speaker 14: It's his back foot. Throws to the end zone.
- 58:36Speaker 15: Back shoulder.
- 58:37Speaker 2: Is he caught?
- 58:38Speaker 4: Is he caught? Oh, my God.
- 58:39Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 58:40Speaker 4: He caught it. Oh, my God.
- 58:42Speaker 13: He caught it.
- 58:43Speaker 11: Yes.
- 58:43Speaker 4: Western Michigan and the college football world. Iowa has your back.
- 58:48Speaker 2: Iowa has your back. Oh, my God. Oh, my God.
- 58:53Speaker 16: They've won the football game. There's no storm in the
- 58:56Speaker 16: field tonight. Iowa's lost the football game. That is an
- 59:02Speaker 16: Iowa offense improved. Something you wouldn't see in years past.
- 59:05Speaker 16: And they found a way.
- 59:07Speaker 2: An answer. They turn it upside down.
- 59:09Speaker 3: They make the.
- 59:09Speaker 4: Big house feel small.
- 59:12Speaker 3: A lot of one-liners in there.
- 59:14Speaker 2: Yeah, student exuberance there. Iowa has your back. So there
- 59:17Speaker 2: it is. Hawkeyes.
- 59:19Speaker 3: That's a good t-shirt right there.
- 59:20Speaker 1: Yeah, and that was a bizarre deal too. You know,
- 59:25Speaker 1: most of the national.
- 59:27Speaker 2: pundits. Roger and I, like I.
- 59:29Speaker 1: Said, we were grabbing a meal after the game in
- 59:32Speaker 1: a place, and we saw it happen, but it was
- 59:34Speaker 1: like looking across the restaurant at a monitor.
- 59:37Speaker 2: Did he catch that? He caught that.
- 59:38Speaker 1: Wow.
- 59:39Speaker 2: Okay, they're reviewing that. They won. We didn't know about all.
- 59:43Speaker 1: The other stuff that led up to it, that Michigan
- 59:47Speaker 1: Should have been able to get out.
- 59:48Speaker 2: There was a couple of penalties. There was a guy that.
- 59:52Speaker 3: Couldn't get off the field to an injured player.
- 59:54Speaker 1: That was the last one. There was an interception should
- 59:56Speaker 1: have been made. And then an injured player. Otherwise, I
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: would not have been able to stop the clock and
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: would not have been able to get another play.
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: It was it was as Gus Johnson says, John Henry Daly.
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: Yeah. So it was something else. So anyway, Iowa hosting
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: Ohio State this week. Is that where game day is?
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: Despite the fact it's a CBS telecast?
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: I think so.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: They sometimes go where CBS or Fox is.
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: Correct.
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: Iowa City. They were taking flack for this, but game
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: day went five times, I think, last year to games
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: they were not televised.
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: So they're doing it this week. I would venture to guess.
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: That if Alabama and Georgia both win this week, they'll
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: be in Tuscaloosa next week. They will not be in
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: Dallas next week. For the Red River rivalry, that's because
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: of Oklahoma's shortcomings, not Texas. But I would say they're
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: going to be in Tuscaloosa if both Alabama and Georgia
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: win this week.
- 1:00:53Speaker 15: Boy.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: Then they might be in Bloomington for Indiana-Ohio State the
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: following week.
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: And then the following week, there's like seven places they
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: could be.
- 1:01:03Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: On October 17th.
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. Well, that's what I was talking about on
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: the 17th. Oh, okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:08Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: On the 17th, I could see them being in Bloomington
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: for that.
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: There are.
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: So many good games on October 17th.
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: Any other top five versus top five matchups other than Indiana,
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: Ohio State?
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: Those are the safest bets, I think, to stay there
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: just based on who they play. Right now, you've got
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: one Texas versus eight Florida. Seven Alabama versus 17 Tennessee.
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: Three Notre Dame against 10 BYU. 16-11 in Mississippi State, LSU.
- 1:01:35Speaker 3: They might move up or down. Missouri Ole Miss. There's
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: a lot happening.
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: Yeah, they've already been to Austin once, so they probably
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: wouldn't come back for Florida on that. If they go
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: to Tuscaloosa for Alabama-Georgia, they probably wouldn't go turn back
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: around for Alabama in a road environment the next week.
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: That's what I'm thinking.
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: Now, even though Ohio State was on the road for
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: the Texas game, and even though they're on the road
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: again this week, it'll be interesting to see how that goes.
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: On that floor is probably going to be undefeated coming
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: in here.
- 1:02:08Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: Good, good, good chance.
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: Missouri, South Carolina. That's, that's, that's who's left on their
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: schedule before they come to Austin.
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:02:15Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: I think, I think they're probably in good shape to
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: do that. Um, okay.
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: When we come back, uh, we'll get you ready toward
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: the top of the hour and I will update you on.
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: Uh, some of these projections next on 13 under the zone.
- 1:02:30Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: Um, just to let you know that we do this
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: every week. The, uh, Updated playoff and bowl projections. The
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: two guys who do it is Kyle Bonagura and Mark
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: Schleybaugh of ESPN. And Bonagura has Texas as the number
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: five overall national seed. Schleybaugh's Texas is the number one
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: national seed. So Bonagura has Texas in a five versus
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: 12 matchup against Boise.
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: And Schleybaugh has Indiana's the five against Boise, the 12.
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: Then in the six versus 11, both have Ohio State,
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: the six versus the 11 Ole Miss. Both have Alabama's
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: the seven. Bonagura against 10 seed Utah. Schleybaugh against 10
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: seed Iowa. And the 8-9 matchup, BYU the eight, Florida
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: the nine, according to Bonagura, and Florida the eight.
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: BYU the nine, according to Schleybaugh.
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: Then in the Fiesta Bowl, Bonagura has Texas against Miami,
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: the five versus the four.
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: Schleybaugh has Indiana against Miami, the five versus the four.
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: In the quarterfinals, they both have Ohio State as the
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: six against the three, Indiana, according to Bonagura.
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: Schleybaugh says against Notre Dame, the three.
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: Also in the quarterfinals, Alabama against the two-seed Notre Dame,
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: according to Bonagura. Alabama, the seven-seed against the two-seed Georgia.
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: according to Schleyball. And the other quarterfinal, eight, BYU against one, Georgia.
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: And Schleyball has Florida the eight against Texas, the number
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: one in that. Then in the semifinals, Orange Bowl, Bonagura
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: has two seed Notre Dame against three seed Indiana.
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: Schleyball has four versus eight, Miami against Florida.
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: Sugar Bowl, Bonagura has one seed Georgia against four seed Miami.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: Schleybaugh has the two-seed Georgia against the six Ohio State.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: So they both have Texas out before the semifinals. And
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: in the national championship, Bonagura has Georgia one versus Notre
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: Dame two. Schleybaugh has Georgia the two versus the four-seed Miami.
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: So, yeah. That's what they've got. They both have Texas
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: going out in the quarterfinal round. Bonagura... The Longhorns is
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: the five seed against the four.
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: Miami play ball as Texas as the one seed getting
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: knocked out by Florida in the semifinal.
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: Would be a rematch. Yeah, it would be. All right.
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: Four o'clock hour coming up on 13 Under the Zone.
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: From Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee, it's the top-ranked Texas
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: Longhorns against the 14th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers. Manning will work from
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: the shotgun. Off the right hash on first down and
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: 10 yards for the snap.
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: Play action. Manning looking. Pressure coming.
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: Going deep downfield and he does have Emmitt Mosley open
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: and he'll make the catch inside the 25-yard line. Mosley
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: sprinting downfield. Got behind the linebacker in front of the
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: safety and hauls it in for a 43-yard strike.
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: Second down and seven. Manning out of the pistol. Has
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: the snap. Hands on the ground again. Bounces outside. Inside.
- 1:05:51Speaker 16: Five.
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: Goal line.
- 1:05:52Speaker 4: Touchdown, Texas.
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: Raleigh Brown picked up two huge blocks and burst into
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: the end zone. A nine-yard touchdown run. On third down
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: and 12, Faison Brandon with a shotgun snap.
- 1:06:03Speaker 3: Back to throw.
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: Pressure coming.
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: Being chased.
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: He's hit. He'll go down.
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: Sacked by Colin Simmons. He wrapped him up and dropped him.
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: Arch Manning out of the shotgun. Has the snap.
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: Looking to throw. Arch with time.
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: Open downfield Bishop he caught it and had he not
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: had his momentum carry him out of bounds he'd have
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: been in the end zone as it is it'll be
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: down to the five yard line the truth freshman Jermaine
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: Bishop down the hole to Max Chimeno trade a buck
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: the senior transfer from Fort Lauderdale Florida transferred in from
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: New Mexico on the snap good snap and hold and
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: the kick is good and the Longhorns are back up
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: seven points here 31 seconds.
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: Here in the quarter number two two.
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: Receivers wide right one on the short side split left
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: manning will turn and go up the sideline looking over
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: there and a diving catch made by cam coleman well
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: he was in man coverage down the sideline there's also
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: flags down that might be for roughing the passer of
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: the hold of the punter max cemento trade above the
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: snap from the left hash mark a 45 yard field
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: goal try the kick on the way and the kick
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: is good Knocked through by Gianni Spedic.
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: And the Longhorns are back in front.
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: Off the right hash at the Tennessee 45-yard line. Second
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: down and six. Back to throwoff play. Action pressure coming.
- 1:07:20Speaker 5: Wrapped up.
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: Down he goes. Colin Simmons strikes. And this time Colin.
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: No excessive celebration or anything like that he just gets
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: up and hug the teammate from the shotgun brandon to
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: take the snap two receivers to either side of the
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: formation he has the snap back to throw deep retreat
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: pressure coming scrambling still scrambling and down he goes colin
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: simmons does it again he clipped the ankles and knocked
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: him down a loss of 15 And the big fella
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: was in on the party as well, Grafard. Double wing set,
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: out of the shotgun, on first down, has the snap.
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: Back to throw, steps up, pressure coming, and he'll go
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: down again! The Longhorns sack him yet again. A big
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: loss that takes it inside the 25-yard line, and it's
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: Hiro Kanu who comes up with a sack for a
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: loss of six. Arch from the shotgun on third down.
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: Now he shifts Mosley, who was one of the guys
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: from the backfield, out. Arch looks right, throws down the middle,
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: it's caught by Wingo! And a first down at the
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: Tennessee 40-yard line. Ryan had to reach back a little bit,
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: pulled it back in.
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: And that's a gain of 18 and a first down.
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: Manning out of the pistol.
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: Raleigh Brown lined up behind him on first and goal
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: off the right hash mark at the volunteer four-yard line.
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: And it's a handoff. Brown off right tackle to the
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: goal line.
- 1:08:35Speaker 4: Touchdown, Texas.
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: Raleigh Brown takes it across for the score. And the
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: Loghorns have their largest lead of the day.
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: And now the clock is put in motion. On second
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: down and five.
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: Shotgun snap back to Brandon.
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: Scrambles.
- 1:08:50Speaker 3: Down he goes.
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: Raheem Biles got him.
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: It's a loss back on the opposite side of midfield.
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: It's back to the 49, so they lose the five
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: yards they got. clock moving down to 12 down to
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: 10 and now Tennessee lines up, shotgun snap, back, branded,
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: scrambles to the right side, looks, heaves it, downfield, to
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: the end zone, and it is tipped away.
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: Game is over.
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: Jelani McDonald knocks the ball out on the back of
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: the end zone. The Loghorns survive. Texas wins the game.
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: Final score, Texas 20, Tennessee 17. It was the late
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: Jim Valvano who popularized the phrase survive and advance. Advance
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: on to the next SEC game. After an open date
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: week on the schedule this week for the Longhorns, we
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: welcome you back here for the final hour of the
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: program here on 13 Under the Zone. Craig Way alongside
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: the producer, Jake Kerman, who put together that highlight montage
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: of the Texas win in Knoxville, Tennessee on Saturday over
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: the Tennessee Volunteers. Before we jump to the NFL, which
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: we're going to here momentarily... I mentioned that there were
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: playoff projections. Also, there are new power rankings in addition
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: to the poll rankings coming out.
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: Now, again, I got an indication today on.
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: My Starbucks app that says if I try these four
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: delicious things, any bakery item, any iced shaken espresso.
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: My wife likes those, so there's no problem there. Any ice,
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: is it matcha?
- 1:10:32Speaker 11: Yep.
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: Latte. Never had one of those. Any good?
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: It kind of tastes like grass. It's not my thing.
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: And then any ice macchiato, which if I do those things,
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: I get like 75 bonus stars. The problem is that
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: other than the bakery item, they're all about $ 7. 50 a piece.
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: So these power rankings in $ 7. 50 will get you one
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: of those beverages at Starbucks.
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: I was wondering how that was going to all come back.
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: You know me. I go around the garage to get
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: to the barn.
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: But that was a way to bring all this back
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: to the fore because all of these rankings really don't
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: mean an awful lot until we get to the college
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: football playoff rankings.
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: Now, we had playoff projections. done.
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: But again, it's merely projections and rankings. But nevertheless, Heather Dennett,
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: who covers it very extensively for ESPN, issued power rankings.
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: And this is what these power rankings would show, going
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: from 25 down to one. Number 25 is SMU, 24
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: Penn State, 23 Houston, 22 Duke, number 21 Boise State,
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: They look like the best G6 team so far. Oklahoma
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: State at 20.
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: I was talking about that. It hadn't even been ranked.
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: She goes, after their slow start and 24-10 loss at
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: Tulsa in the season, Oklahoma State has flipped the switch
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: and is playing like the squad everyone expected to see
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: under first-year head coach Eric Morris. The Cowboys kicked off
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: Big 12 play Saturday night with a dominant Second half
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: for a 41-24 win in West Virginia. Drew Mestemaker, there
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: he is, the Vandegrift product, threw for 389 yards and
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: three touchdowns. And he received plenty of help from Wyatt
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: Young and Caleb Hawkins.
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: They're all North Texas transfers.
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: The Pokes averaged almost 11 yards per play on offense
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: after halftime and got three key fourth-down stops on defense
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: to pull away.
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: They continue to look like a team that will contend
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: in the Big 12 title race.
- 1:12:33Speaker 3: Yeah, they look legit.
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: Number 19 is USC, dropping eight spots after that home
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: loss to Oregon.
- 1:12:41Speaker 3: Number 18... Did you happen to see the hit on Dante.
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: Moore, Craig? Oh, yeah. Well, I saw it at halftime.
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: I didn't see it in real time.
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: Have you ever called the hit that big in real time?
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: I think so. I think I have a couple of times.
- 1:12:53Speaker 5: Scary, huh?
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: Yeah, it is.
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: No doubt. I remember Drew Kelson really just launching... Joel
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: clad into the sun in the 2005 big 12 championship game, uh,
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: for that. Um, so yeah, it's scary. And, and by
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: the way, he's been suspended for a game, uh, because
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: of that by USC, uh, UCLA is 18. Tennessee fell
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: three spots to 17 after the loss to Texas. Um,
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: number 16, Texas tech, I dropped them three spots. You know,
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: they were kind of, they were kind of being, uh,
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: you know, given a gain for a while by Sam Houston.
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: It was 21-14.
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: Now, Will Hammond, the Hutto product, threw three interceptions in
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: the game. But they stuck through it and blew them
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: out in the second half. Iowa, number 15, after that
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: heart-stopping finish, that win over Michigan on the road. Oregon,
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: up four spots to 14. Mississippi State, Up eight spots
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: to number 13. We saw that coming.
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: Mississippi State ahead of Oregon as we turn the calendar
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: to October.
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: Well, we're going to hear somebody ask Sark that question
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: about if he saw Mississippi State in Florida going. Utah 12,
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: LSU 11, BYU 10. Ole Miss dropping seven spots from
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: two to nine after losing in Florida. Alabama eight, Florida seven.
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: Indiana number six, Ohio State five. Miami four, Notre Dame three,
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: Georgia number two, Texas still number one. Her write-up is
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: the Longhorns sometimes look sloppy, but you know what's pristine?
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: Their resume, which includes wins over number five Ohio State
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: at home and at number 17 Tennessee. Inside a deafening
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: Neyland Stadium, Texas didn't get a ton of production out
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: of its offense. Quarterback Manning was up and down, and
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: the running game missed Hollywood Smothers playmaking. longest run was
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: 11 yards by Manning, but the defense stepped up in
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: a big way with 10 sacks and only 1.6 yards
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: per rush allowed. The bye week comes at a great
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: time for Steve Sarkeesian's squad as he gets a breather
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: after a fast start to the season and a chance
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: to reset heading into a rivalry game with Oklahoma. So
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: those are updated power rankings. So it's just kind of
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: to reset for you and let you know, you know,
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: what the poll rankings say, what the playoff projections look like,
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: what the power rankings are, all that kind of stuff. Now, again,
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: All that and $ 7. 50 will get you a matcha at Starbucks, right?
- 1:15:27Speaker 3: I had a friend who happens to like matcha who
- 1:15:29Speaker 3: was wondering, Craig, and you might weigh in on this,
- 1:15:32Speaker 3: when's the last time you felt like Texas at any
- 1:15:35Speaker 3: point in recent memory has been this far ahead of
- 1:15:40Speaker 3: Texas A & M and Oklahoma on lists like this,
- 1:15:42Speaker 3: this early?
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: Both of them?
- 1:15:46Speaker 3: Right, at the same time. That's the key.
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: That's kind of hard to say, both of them.
- 1:15:53Speaker 3: Feels like it's been a long time, though.
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, exactly. I have to think about that. Okay.
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: I can pick out individual times for one, but both
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: of them might be difficult to think about at the
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: same time. All right, meanwhile, Cowboys coming off that heartbreaking
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: loss to the Baltimore Ravens. And after the game, Brian Schottenheimer,
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: going through his press conference, was asked about.
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: The defensive improvements, what exactly did he see in terms
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: of defensive improvements?
- 1:16:26Speaker 11: I thought Quinnen looked great.
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: I really did.
- 1:16:28Speaker 11: I thought he did some very impactful plays. I thought
- 1:16:32Speaker 11: there were some positive things. I thought he got the
- 1:16:34Speaker 11: big stop down there in the red zone, kind of
- 1:16:37Speaker 11: a couple big stuffs. But at the end of the day,
- 1:16:39Speaker 11: I still think some of our edges in the run game,
- 1:16:42Speaker 11: we're getting beat to the edge. We're giving up some contain.
- 1:16:44Speaker 11: Those are things you've got to clean up. They had
- 1:16:46Speaker 11: too many yards rushing, again, 192. And at the end
- 1:16:51Speaker 11: of the day, you just can't do that. You just
- 1:16:53Speaker 11: got to be better as a football team. But yeah,
- 1:16:58Speaker 11: this one stings.
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: No question that it stings.
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: So next on the list, Shottie was asked about where
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: does the credit go for the defensive improvements during the
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: course of the game when he got a chance to
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: see what Derrick Henry could do, and yet they made
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: adjustments to make stops against him.
- 1:17:22Speaker 11: I thought the entire defensive line, you know, Bull made
- 1:17:25Speaker 11: some plays, Tito made some plays. I mean, I think
- 1:17:27Speaker 11: you saw some penetration. That's a big back. You know,
- 1:17:30Speaker 11: in those short-yarded situations, we actually did a really good
- 1:17:32Speaker 11: job of the game plan of trying to get knockback
- 1:17:35Speaker 11: and get people, you know, where they should be. And
- 1:17:39Speaker 11: some of the penetration I thought was excellent. So give
- 1:17:41Speaker 11: those guys a lot of credit. That's a big man,
- 1:17:43Speaker 11: and we didn't.
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: Do it once. We did it a couple times. All right,
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: next up, asked about the fact that the team fought
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: really hard.
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: They fought back, had a chance to win. Is there
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: any consolation to be taken from that? No.
- 1:17:58Speaker 11: I think, you know, the way this league is, man,
- 1:18:00Speaker 11: these games always come down to that, and especially when
- 1:18:03Speaker 11: you have a team like this. But, you know, at
- 1:18:05Speaker 11: the end of the day, we lost, you know, and
- 1:18:08Speaker 11: that's what it is. So no one can say that
- 1:18:12Speaker 11: they called, played a perfect game.
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: No one.
- 1:18:17Speaker 11: And so to me, at the end of the day,
- 1:18:18Speaker 11: you know, we all look at ourselves first. We pull
- 1:18:21Speaker 11: our bootstraps up, we get our asses back to Frisco
- 1:18:25Speaker 11: and we go back to work.
- 1:18:26Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:18:28Speaker 17: All right.
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: Uh, next up was asked if, uh, Jay Sean Barham,
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: what he did with the big stops he made and,
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: and you know, what he's done to show what he
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: could do with the big stops he made.
- 1:18:39Speaker 11: I remember the one where he shot the gap, you know,
- 1:18:40Speaker 11: he's just such a big, strong, powerful guy. Um, again,
- 1:18:43Speaker 11: I thought, uh, He flashed a lot, but I thought
- 1:18:46Speaker 11: more than anything, Tommy, I thought he was in great
- 1:18:48Speaker 11: command and control of what we were doing, you know,
- 1:18:51Speaker 11: and calling the game with the green dot and two
- 1:18:54Speaker 11: young players stepping up. And again, I do think that
- 1:18:56Speaker 11: helps him settle into the game a little bit, you know,
- 1:18:58Speaker 11: being in communication with Christian.
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: Next, asked also in terms of what they need to do,
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: they've got to be better in the special teams. You know,
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: Brandon Aubrey is great as he is and under the
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: new contract and the field goals that he makes. How
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: about the mistakes on the kickoffs that have been going
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: out of bounds?
- 1:19:19Speaker 11: Again, I mean, it happens occasionally. It can't happen twice
- 1:19:22Speaker 11: in a game. We don't expect that from Brandon. You know,
- 1:19:25Speaker 11: we know how talented Brandon is, but like I said,
- 1:19:28Speaker 11: no one coached or played a perfect game. And because
- 1:19:31Speaker 11: of that, we ended up coming up short to a
- 1:19:33Speaker 11: good football team and a team that, you know, played
- 1:19:36Speaker 11: well tonight.
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: Next up, He was asked about Dan Schoonmaker, who had the,
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: what's that?
- 1:19:44Speaker 9: Luke.
- 1:19:44Speaker 3: Yeah, Luke.
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: I said Luke. I said Dan.
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: I meant Luke Schoonmaker making, having that false start and
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: how that impacts the play calling in the red zone
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: when you have a penalty like that late in the game.
- 1:19:56Speaker 11: It can't happen to me. I mean, Schooney knows that,
- 1:19:58Speaker 11: you know, at the end of the time, at the
- 1:19:59Speaker 11: end of the day, we were down there low. I
- 1:20:01Speaker 11: liked the call that we had. But, you know, you
- 1:20:03Speaker 11: move us back, it definitely hurts because there's, you know,
- 1:20:06Speaker 11: a couple things that we had that we felt really
- 1:20:07Speaker 11: good about down there low. But, again, a broken record.
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: I apologize.
- 1:20:12Speaker 11: But, you know, no one coached or played a perfect
- 1:20:14Speaker 11: game tonight. And, unfortunately, that was a big play in
- 1:20:17Speaker 11: the game, just like, you know, some of the mistakes
- 1:20:19Speaker 11: I made.
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: There was a lot of conversation about the field conditions.
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: going into it what did he think of the field
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: conditions there in rio and for that matter the atmosphere.
- 1:20:28Speaker 11: Yeah number one i thought the field held up fine
- 1:20:30Speaker 11: i thought you know there's one slip i remember turp
- 1:20:32Speaker 11: had one on the third down where he slipped on
- 1:20:34Speaker 11: a little comeback route that we had i thought the
- 1:20:36Speaker 11: emotion of the fans was great and uh unfortunately i
- 1:20:39Speaker 11: wish we could be out there celebrate with them right
- 1:20:41Speaker 11: now but we came.
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: Up short okay and then finally one more from brian
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: chottenheimer how about an evaluation of his team's pass.
- 1:20:46Speaker 11: Rush certainly below where we expect to be um You know,
- 1:20:51Speaker 11: especially with these athletic quarterbacks, that makes it hard. But
- 1:20:54Speaker 11: I definitely think that there's some ops. I mean, you know,
- 1:20:57Speaker 11: we've been around these guys a lot. You know, Calvin,
- 1:20:59Speaker 11: we just haven't gotten them on the ground. And we're
- 1:21:01Speaker 11: looking at everything. But I do think, you know, Quinton Williams,
- 1:21:05Speaker 11: you know, I thought he flashed tonight, looked really good.
- 1:21:07Speaker 11: And we're going to keep working because we've got a
- 1:21:10Speaker 11: long way to go.
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: Okay. All right.
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: We'll hear from D'Amico Ryans a little bit later on.
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: Coming up next, more from Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkeesian
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: here on 13 Under the Zone.
- 1:21:19Speaker 3: Fall in Texas means one thing.

- 1:27:37Speaker 2: Like a log.
- 1:27:39Speaker 3: But when I get home.
- 1:27:40Speaker 9: To you, I find the things that you do will
- 1:27:43Speaker 9: make me feel all right.
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: Um, it was the hard day's night, you know, for
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: a lot of the teams, whether you were successful or not. Uh,
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: I got to tell you, you know, um, I, I
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: hear the song and obviously it was a huge hit
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: for the Beatles.
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: It was the number one.
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: Um, and they had the movie, which was, uh, uh,
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: also a big hit for them.
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: It was their first It was their first motion picture together.
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: And it was wildly successful at a time that was
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: wildly successful for them. However, as I said, there's two
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: or three different versions of this song. And I mean, actually,
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: there's more than that. But there's like Sheryl Crow did
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: a version.
- 1:28:40Speaker 12: Of it.
- 1:28:40Speaker 2: And then there's other.
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: Have you ever heard the Keely Smith version of A
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: Hard Day's Night?
- 1:28:48Speaker 3: I have not. I don't even know who Keely Smith is, Craig.
- 1:28:50Speaker 2: Should I? No, probably not. She long preceded you, like,
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: in the 60s.
- 1:28:56Speaker 3: Doesn't mean I shouldn't know, but.
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: Yeah, but... Look that up.
- 1:29:01Speaker 3: Yeah, I can pull it up here in a moment.
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: Yeah, look that up. It's a little different. It's a
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: little different presentation.
- 1:29:14Speaker 2: This is it right here. Imagine a nightclub in the 60s.
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: It's groovy, man.
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: Guy with a big stand-up bass, and then she steps
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: to the mic.
- 1:29:28Speaker 3: It's been a while.
- 1:29:30Speaker 2: This night.
- 1:29:32Speaker 18: And he's been working like a dog. It's been a
- 1:29:37Speaker 18: hard day.
- 1:29:39Speaker 2: This night.
- 1:29:41Speaker 18: He should be sleeping like a log. But when he
- 1:29:45Speaker 18: comes home to me where he ought to be, I'll
- 1:29:50Speaker 18: make him feel all right.
- 1:29:52Speaker 3: So the other person's perspective in the song. Absolutely.
- 1:29:57Speaker 2: You know, he works hard.
- 1:29:59Speaker 18: All day to get me money to buy me things
- 1:30:05Speaker 18: and he does it just to hear me say i'm
- 1:30:10Speaker 18: gonna get him everything so he loves to come home
- 1:30:15Speaker 18: because when i get him alone i'll make him feel
- 1:30:20Speaker 18: okay now.
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: Listen to the the bridge here.
- 1:30:25Speaker 18: When he's home, everything seems to be right. When he's home,
- 1:30:37Speaker 18: kissing and holding me tight. So tight.
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: Violin in there? I'm about to give orchestral arrangement.
- 1:30:46Speaker 18: And he's been working.
- 1:30:48Speaker 4: Like a dog.
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: Anyway, so that's the Keely Spitzberg.
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: When you first came, bummed back with this, I was like,
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: The first time I heard the Keeley Spencer, I was
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: on a plane, on a long-distance flight somewhere, and just
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: happened to turn, and it was like, you know, with
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: all the different modes of music.
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: And entertainment you can do on a certain airline, and
- 1:31:10Speaker 2: there was that. I was like, hmm.
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: And Alyssa was like, wow, that's pretty groovy.
- 1:31:15Speaker 3: The person next to you is like, what's he snapping at?
- 1:31:17Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, right, exactly.
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: All right, back to work for the Longhorns, and head
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: coach Steve Sarkeesian, talking about the team trying to make
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: sure they take accountability for their mistakes, not only, you know,
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: the personal foul calls and the unsportsmanlike thing, but also
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: just the needless penalties and then cleaning up a lot
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: of things. And that includes his evaluation of special teams,
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: giving up the pump return for the touchdown, kickoffs that
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: were punts that did not go the direction they wanted.
- 1:31:48Speaker 2: There were some misfires on that as well.
- 1:31:50Speaker 4: I think it's, you know, we've got three new specialists and,
- 1:31:55Speaker 4: you know, like G's had a great year for us. Um,
- 1:31:59Speaker 4: but kickoff wise, that was not who he we've seen
- 1:32:03Speaker 4: him to be. We've had three home games here and
- 1:32:05Speaker 4: this guy's knocking every ball out of the end zone.
- 1:32:07Speaker 4: We're not getting returns Saturday. All of a sudden he's
- 1:32:11Speaker 4: not striking the ball the way he's capable of the
- 1:32:13Speaker 4: last one. We kick out of balance. They get the ball,
- 1:32:15Speaker 4: the 35 yard line. So Was that the environment? Was
- 1:32:19Speaker 4: that something he was doing fundamentally? We got to clean
- 1:32:22Speaker 4: that up. Secondly, the punt game, we're a directional punt team.
- 1:32:25Speaker 4: We're always trying to punt the ball to the numbers,
- 1:32:27Speaker 4: whether it's into the boundary to the field. And everyone
- 1:32:30Speaker 4: wants to talk about the coverage unit. Well, the long
- 1:32:32Speaker 4: punt return for the touchdown, we punt the ball right
- 1:32:35Speaker 4: down the middle of the field. That's not ideal when
- 1:32:37Speaker 4: you're trying to cover punts. And so getting those two
- 1:32:40Speaker 4: guys back to being the players that we know they're
- 1:32:44Speaker 4: capable of being, I do think is important. We have
- 1:32:47Speaker 4: stressed the return game. It was unfortunate we got the
- 1:32:50Speaker 4: block in the back on Jordan Johnson-Rubell because I think
- 1:32:54Speaker 4: Ryan Niblett was trying to set that up. We had
- 1:32:57Speaker 4: another punt return with Jermaine Bishop that, we don't execute
- 1:33:01Speaker 4: the way we would have liked that Ryan Niblett trying
- 1:33:04Speaker 4: to draw attention to himself. They didn't deem that it
- 1:33:08Speaker 4: was a fair catch, but we didn't practice that. All
- 1:33:11Speaker 4: we did was practice running over and falling down. And
- 1:33:13Speaker 4: so we got to do the things that we're practicing,
- 1:33:16Speaker 4: that we're doing. The block game is always something that
- 1:33:19Speaker 4: needs to be part of our repertoire, whether it's pump
- 1:33:22Speaker 4: block or field goal block. And so we won't ever
- 1:33:24Speaker 4: stop exhausting ourselves there. The biggest thing on special teams
- 1:33:28Speaker 4: we need to get is we need more depth and
- 1:33:30Speaker 4: You know, if Juice Cryer and Rasheem Biles and Jelani McDonald,
- 1:33:34Speaker 4: these guys are going to play this many snaps on defense,
- 1:33:37Speaker 4: which deservingly so, we need other guys taking some of
- 1:33:40Speaker 4: the heat off these guys on punt, punt return, kickoff coverage.
- 1:33:44Speaker 4: And so we need the depth to step up. And
- 1:33:46Speaker 4: I think that's where we need to place an emphasis
- 1:33:48Speaker 4: on who can we count on to be in those
- 1:33:50Speaker 4: positions to play on special teams. to take the load
- 1:33:54Speaker 4: off of those guys so that they can keep being
- 1:33:56Speaker 4: the players that they are on defense.
- 1:33:57Speaker 2: Very good point there.
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: Now, on to Cam Coleman, who was a little bit
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: banged up, and they were talking about his targets and catches,
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: and Sark was asked if Coleman is being utilized the
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: way they want it.
- 1:34:09Speaker 4: Yeah, he's doing fine. He got banged up Saturday. And again,
- 1:34:14Speaker 4: there was a lot of emphasis and attention drawn his
- 1:34:17Speaker 4: way with cloud coverage and things. And that's where we
- 1:34:20Speaker 4: have to utilize the other guys. And I get it.
- 1:34:22Speaker 4: I think Ryan had, I don't know, five or six
- 1:34:24Speaker 4: catches or whatever it was Saturday. But when we get
- 1:34:28Speaker 4: those opportunities, we gotta take them and we gotta take
- 1:34:30Speaker 4: advantage of them. He makes the one catch. He actually
- 1:34:33Speaker 4: bruised a tailbone. It's nothing serious of when he landed
- 1:34:37Speaker 4: to make the catch. Arch took the shot to him
- 1:34:39Speaker 4: on the post, which I have no qualms about him
- 1:34:42Speaker 4: taking that shot. And I like Cam Coleman's odds one-on-one
- 1:34:45Speaker 4: on a deep ball down the field. But again, we've
- 1:34:48Speaker 4: got to be creative enough and we've got to allow
- 1:34:50Speaker 4: him to do the things that he does really well
- 1:34:53Speaker 4: as we continue to navigate our way.
- 1:34:55Speaker 2: Through the season.
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: Then there was a question from our friend Kirk Bowles
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: with the Austin, well, usually be Austin American Save.
- 1:35:00Speaker 2: Still lives in Austin, but he's with the Houston Chronicle now.
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: And he asked a question about, as to whether this
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: team can win a national championship given the offense that
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: they've shown so far. Can this offense do enough to
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: help them win the national championship? If not, what changes
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: could or should be made? And I thought Sark had
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: a pretty interesting response to him.
- 1:35:26Speaker 4: No, because I don't know all the teams that we're
- 1:35:28Speaker 4: going to play yet as we navigate our way through.
- 1:35:31Speaker 4: What I don't know is we need to play better
- 1:35:34Speaker 4: offensive football. And where that begins for us is do
- 1:35:40Speaker 4: the things in game that we practice. That's like a
- 1:35:43Speaker 4: simple fix, right? And that was part of the meeting
- 1:35:46Speaker 4: this morning when I went through good, bad, and ugly
- 1:35:48Speaker 4: with the offense in front of the team, but with
- 1:35:50Speaker 4: the offense was here's something we did in practice and
- 1:35:54Speaker 4: you can show them doing it in practice. Now here's
- 1:35:57Speaker 4: the same thing in game and why are we not
- 1:35:59Speaker 4: doing that? Why are we not taking Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday,
- 1:36:02Speaker 4: Friday to Saturday? It starts there. Like Let's at least
- 1:36:06Speaker 4: just do what we practice, and that will start moving
- 1:36:10Speaker 4: the ball forward on a more consistent basis. What we
- 1:36:13Speaker 4: can't do is have five drives start where we have
- 1:36:16Speaker 4: a negative play on P and 10 to start a series,
- 1:36:19Speaker 4: and it's second and 13, it's second and 15, and
- 1:36:22Speaker 4: that lends itself to third and 18, third and 17,
- 1:36:25Speaker 4: third and 13. Nobody wants to be in that situation.
- 1:36:28Speaker 4: The offensive line doesn't, harder to block those pass rushers.
- 1:36:31Speaker 4: The quarterback doesn't. The receivers don't because they're getting now
- 1:36:34Speaker 4: a variety of coverages, and I can promise you the
- 1:36:36Speaker 4: play caller doesn't either. And so we've got to be
- 1:36:38Speaker 4: more efficient on first and 10, and that starts with
- 1:36:42Speaker 4: just doing what we practice doing. I don't think now
- 1:36:45Speaker 4: is the time to simplify. I think now is the
- 1:36:47Speaker 4: time to trust what we do. And as of right now,
- 1:36:53Speaker 4: I don't see any, like, changes to the starting 11
- 1:36:59Speaker 4: or 13 because you could vary that some. but I
- 1:37:02Speaker 4: do think competition is healthy and it's important, especially in
- 1:37:06Speaker 4: a bye week, to see if guys can make strides
- 1:37:09Speaker 4: to earn more opportunities.
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: We'll come back to that thing about taking the practice
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: habits and execution to the playing field in just a
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: few minutes here. First of all, Roger Wallace asked him
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: a question about Arch Manning's mental and physical break and
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: reprieve he might be getting this week due to the bye.
- 1:37:28Speaker 4: I think it's tough because, you know, for a quarterback,
- 1:37:32Speaker 4: you know, offensive production, you know, I think everybody looks
- 1:37:36Speaker 4: at falls squarely on a quarterback shoulders when in reality,
- 1:37:40Speaker 4: I thought ours played a pretty good game Saturday. He
- 1:37:43Speaker 4: didn't have a lot of ops. You know, he only
- 1:37:45Speaker 4: got 19 passes. He was able to get off. And
- 1:37:48Speaker 4: even the interception, like I said, I thought he makes
- 1:37:50Speaker 4: a pretty good throw and I'll take my shot with
- 1:37:52Speaker 4: Cam Coleman on that right there next Saturday too. You know,
- 1:37:56Speaker 4: if we get that look, we got to take it.
- 1:38:00Speaker 4: I do think we've got to minimize getting out of
- 1:38:05Speaker 4: these third and long situations because that creates a tough
- 1:38:09Speaker 4: situation on a quarterback. And that's where we're crossing the
- 1:38:11Speaker 4: line of scrimmage. Now it's three times in a couple
- 1:38:13Speaker 4: of weeks to last week to where he wants to run,
- 1:38:17Speaker 4: but it's too far to get to where he wants
- 1:38:19Speaker 4: to get to, to get the first down. And so
- 1:38:21Speaker 4: now he's stuck in the middle of what to do next.
- 1:38:24Speaker 4: And so we've got to be better first and second
- 1:38:26Speaker 4: down players. So in the end, again, I think that
- 1:38:32Speaker 4: he'll continue to get better as we continue to get
- 1:38:35Speaker 4: better around him. He's got to do his part, don't
- 1:38:37Speaker 4: get me wrong, and there's plenty of things that he
- 1:38:39Speaker 4: can improve upon, but everybody's got to get better on offense.
- 1:38:43Speaker 4: We can't just say, well, Arch needs to play better.
- 1:38:44Speaker 11: No, no, no.
- 1:38:46Speaker 4: A lot of guys on offense need to improve throughout
- 1:38:49Speaker 4: this bye week and heading into the next ballgame.
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: All right, we need to take a break.
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: When we come back, there's a little more I want
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: you to hear from Sark, including a pretty interesting overview
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: of the SEC with everybody having just played one, at
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: the most, two conference games. We'll hear that coming up
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: when we continue on 13 Under the Zone. Well, the
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: Texans are trying to keep from backing down.
- 1:39:11Speaker 2: They're 0-3 now.
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: And after their loss yesterday in the waning moments, Indianapolis 1917,
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: head coach D'Amico Ryans was asked if he's undergone some
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: self-evaluation and or second-guessing about how he's using his timeouts.
- 1:39:28Speaker 12: When I look at it, if I can make a
- 1:39:32Speaker 12: better decision, I'll look at that and try to see
- 1:39:34Speaker 12: where I can make a better decision.
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: Now, the Texans' offense wasn't as low-performing as it was
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: against Cincinnati, but they still had struggles, and he was
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: asked about how the Colts' defense was able to engineer
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: that success.
- 1:39:46Speaker 12: Defensively, they did a good job of getting off on
- 1:39:48Speaker 12: third downs. It was difficult for us to sustain drives.
- 1:39:52Speaker 4: We couldn't sustain drives. They made plays on third downs.
- 1:39:55Speaker 12: And on the flip side, for us defensively, Although we
- 1:39:58Speaker 12: took the ball away, did some good things, we couldn't
- 1:40:00Speaker 12: get off the field on third down. Those critical stops
- 1:40:03Speaker 12: that we needed to get off the field, we didn't
- 1:40:05Speaker 12: get off the field.
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: And they also went for it in the first quarter
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: on fourth down on their side of midfield.
- 1:40:10Speaker 2: That did not work out.
- 1:40:12Speaker 12: Yeah, I wanted to press forward. I wanted our guys
- 1:40:15Speaker 12: to finish their drive with a touchdown there. Believed in
- 1:40:18Speaker 12: the play call that we had. Believed in the guys
- 1:40:20Speaker 12: doing it. It didn't work your way.
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:40:23Speaker 12: Every week, we can come. We talk about fourth downs.
- 1:40:25Speaker 12: Sometimes they go your way.
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: It's great.
- 1:40:27Speaker 11: They converted some fourth downs.
- 1:40:29Speaker 12: All right?
- 1:40:30Speaker 2: We did it.
- 1:40:32Speaker 8: So.
- 1:40:33Speaker 9: All right.
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: So they're 0-3, getting ready to face the Cowboys this
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: coming Sunday in Houston.
- 1:40:39Speaker 11: All right.
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: Uh, back to a Longhorns head coach, Steve Sarkeesian was asked,
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: is it fair to expect more from the offense and
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: what they've delivered so far?
- 1:40:48Speaker 4: It's always fair. No, that's definitely fair. Uh, I have no,
- 1:40:51Speaker 4: we all want to perform and perform at a really
- 1:40:53Speaker 4: high level and we want to be a complete team. Um,
- 1:40:57Speaker 4: and the expectation and the standard is high to perform
- 1:41:00Speaker 4: at a high level. We haven't done that yet offensively
- 1:41:03Speaker 4: on a consistent enough basis. And so, um, that's fair.
- 1:41:08Speaker 4: And we got to push these guys to be better.
- 1:41:10Speaker 4: And that's our job as coaches.
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: Sark mentioned the first down struggles that are putting him
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: in the second and 10 or third and 19 and
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: things like that as well. So our defense is doing
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: something in specific to cause that?
- 1:41:24Speaker 2: Not necessarily.
- 1:41:26Speaker 4: That's the part that's probably frustrating is that we're not
- 1:41:31Speaker 4: doing the simple tasks. Like, it's one thing when, man,
- 1:41:34Speaker 4: that's a really tough block to make, or, man, that's
- 1:41:38Speaker 4: a really tough throw to make in that window, or, gosh,
- 1:41:41Speaker 4: that's a hard block for the running back or the
- 1:41:43Speaker 4: tight end, or, gosh, man, that route's going to be
- 1:41:46Speaker 4: tough to run versus that. It's simple tasks. And we
- 1:41:50Speaker 4: need to keep the simple things simple. You know, I
- 1:41:52Speaker 4: used to have an old offensive coordinator by the name
- 1:41:54Speaker 4: of Norm Chow, and he used to have this term
- 1:41:57Speaker 4: called kiss it. Keep it simple, stupid. And I used
- 1:42:02Speaker 4: to think as a player, like, man, why would he
- 1:42:03Speaker 4: say that? But sometimes doing the simple task could feel
- 1:42:09Speaker 4: like hard. And we need to make simple be simple.
- 1:42:13Speaker 4: And that's what we need to focus on first. Like
- 1:42:15Speaker 4: the simple task on base downs versus second downs, we
- 1:42:20Speaker 4: need to do the simple things well. Then we can
- 1:42:23Speaker 4: worry about doing the tough things well. well but we
- 1:42:26Speaker 4: got to do the simple things well.
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: First all right a couple other things one he was
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: asked about that taking that what they've done on the
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: practice field really well on tuesdays wednesdays and thursdays but
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: struggling with some of those things on saturday is that
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: common that he's had to deal with that before.
- 1:42:42Speaker 4: I think it can happen different years um i think
- 1:42:46Speaker 4: sometimes what happens is Guys are trying to make plays.
- 1:42:50Speaker 4: They want to have an impact on the game. They
- 1:42:52Speaker 4: want to make a play. They want to try to
- 1:42:54Speaker 4: do more than maybe what's asked of them on a
- 1:42:56Speaker 4: certain play. I think sometimes guys can chase ghosts, meaning,
- 1:43:02Speaker 4: I know it's this, but what if it's this? Oh,
- 1:43:05Speaker 4: it wasn't that? Oh, shoot, I just didn't block what
- 1:43:08Speaker 4: I knew it was going to be, or I'm using
- 1:43:10Speaker 4: that as an example of the line of scrimmage, but
- 1:43:12Speaker 4: that can happen too, and That's part of just trusting
- 1:43:15Speaker 4: your training. So I think we need to settle down
- 1:43:17Speaker 4: a little bit as a team, not try so hard
- 1:43:20Speaker 4: and just do the simple. And if we can do that,
- 1:43:24Speaker 4: that's not going to make us perfect, but that at
- 1:43:27Speaker 4: least is a starting point to start moving in the
- 1:43:29Speaker 4: right direction in a positive way.
- 1:43:31Speaker 8: All right.
- 1:43:31Speaker 2: One more from Sartre. He was asked about his thoughts
- 1:43:34Speaker 2: on the SEC and uh, is he surprised to look
- 1:43:38Speaker 2: and see two future opponents coming up in October, Florida
- 1:43:42Speaker 2: and Mississippi state performing as well as they are and
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: now ranked.
- 1:43:46Speaker 4: They were on my card. I tried to tell you
- 1:43:48Speaker 4: guys about Florida last year. No one wanted to believe me.
- 1:43:51Speaker 4: They got real players in Gainesville and they're a good
- 1:43:55Speaker 4: football team and they've kind of figured it out. So
- 1:43:58Speaker 4: We'll worry about that when that one comes. And Mississippi State,
- 1:44:02Speaker 4: I knew about Kamaru Taylor a year ago. They just
- 1:44:04Speaker 4: didn't play him a lot. They put him in our game.
- 1:44:06Speaker 4: He threw a touchdown pass. So they've got real– this
- 1:44:10Speaker 4: league is no joke. It's a real league. Week in
- 1:44:15Speaker 4: and week out, it's like how do you just go
- 1:44:19Speaker 4: corral your team to say, hey, I need you mentally
- 1:44:23Speaker 4: and I need you physically attached to this game starting
- 1:44:27Speaker 4: on Monday. And doing that Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday,
- 1:44:32Speaker 4: so that you're prepared to play Saturday. Because it's not
- 1:44:35Speaker 4: just the physical component of this league. It's the mental
- 1:44:38Speaker 4: component of this league that it requires. It requires the preparation.
- 1:44:42Speaker 4: It requires the right emotional state that you're in when
- 1:44:46Speaker 4: you go into these stadiums and you play on the road.
- 1:44:49Speaker 4: And And we're going to find out more as the
- 1:44:53Speaker 4: season goes on. And that's where I credit our team.
- 1:44:55Speaker 4: We weren't perfect Saturday, clearly. I'm talking about penalties and things.
- 1:44:59Speaker 4: But to walk into that arena and play the way
- 1:45:04Speaker 4: they played against a top 15 opponent, we deserve a
- 1:45:08Speaker 4: lot of credit for that. And those players in our
- 1:45:10Speaker 4: locker room deserve a lot of credit for that because
- 1:45:12Speaker 4: we're seeing it time and time again where teams don't
- 1:45:15Speaker 4: do that. And they fall behind on the road and
- 1:45:17Speaker 4: then they can't get out of the hole that they
- 1:45:20Speaker 4: dig themselves. And our guys did not. Now, we need
- 1:45:23Speaker 4: to play better. Don't get me wrong. And obviously, I
- 1:45:25Speaker 4: don't know how many times have I said it today,
- 1:45:28Speaker 4: but that's what this league requires. And it is tough
- 1:45:31Speaker 4: and it is hard. And that's a credit to the
- 1:45:34Speaker 4: other coaches in this league, the other players in this league,
- 1:45:36Speaker 4: the other fan bases in this league. And I'd be
- 1:45:40Speaker 4: remiss if I didn't thank Longhorn Nation because there was
- 1:45:43Speaker 4: a lot of burnt orange in the crowd at Neyland Stadium.
- 1:45:46Speaker 4: And it was nothing better than seeing the eyes of Texas,
- 1:45:48Speaker 4: you know, when you're on the road and There's all
- 1:45:51Speaker 4: the burn orange when it's all done, when you can
- 1:45:53Speaker 4: win on the road. So we take a lot of,
- 1:45:55Speaker 4: we take a lot of pride in that. I think
- 1:45:58Speaker 4: now I know I throw a lot of crazy stats
- 1:46:01Speaker 4: at you guys, but since 2023, we have five road
- 1:46:04Speaker 4: wins against ranked opponents. That's more than any other team
- 1:46:07Speaker 4: in the country. That's 16 wins versus top 25 teams
- 1:46:11Speaker 4: since 2023, which is more than any other team in
- 1:46:14Speaker 4: the country. So, you know, I, again, we take a
- 1:46:18Speaker 4: lot of pride in that. And of those 16 teams,
- 1:46:21Speaker 4: six of those were top 10 ranked teams. And so
- 1:46:24Speaker 4: I know a lot is written about, well, we struggle
- 1:46:27Speaker 4: on the road and we play in a lot of
- 1:46:29Speaker 4: tough road environments, you know, and maybe more than other schools,
- 1:46:32Speaker 4: but we respond and we play pretty well. And so
- 1:46:36Speaker 4: we're 11 and one in our last 12 games, six
- 1:46:38Speaker 4: of those wins are against top 20 teams. four of
- 1:46:41Speaker 4: those wins are over top 10 teams. And so we're
- 1:46:44Speaker 4: used to playing in those arenas. We're not perfect, but
- 1:46:48Speaker 4: we find a way to win. And I think that
- 1:46:51Speaker 4: says a lot comparatively of what you see around the
- 1:46:53Speaker 4: country when teams get stuck in these environments.
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: All right, there it is, an overview of the SEC.
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: We'll be back to wrap up today's edition of the
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: program on 1300 The Zone.
