- 0:03Speaker 1: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 0:07Speaker 1: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 792.1 FM. Utah Mammoth season puck
- 0:20Speaker 1: drops tonight, 7.30 p.m.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Against the Chicago Blackhawks. We'll be talking about it a
- 0:27Speaker 2: lot as the season progresses. I put a poll question
- 0:29Speaker 2: up about who do you think, starting from today, who
- 0:33Speaker 2: wins a league championship first, Utah football. And I'm talking
- 0:37Speaker 2: about NCAA football championship, the big one, right? Utah football,
- 0:43Speaker 2: Utah jazz, Utah mammoth, or the as yet twinkle in
- 0:48Speaker 2: the Miller family. I major league baseball team that we
- 0:51Speaker 2: think is coming to the state of Utah. Eventually these
- 0:54Speaker 2: are lofty goals. Who wins one first? Right now we're
- 0:57Speaker 2: talking Utah football. We're talking NFL football and we're bringing
- 1:00Speaker 2: in the best guy to do it on both fronts.
- 1:03Speaker 2: That of course is the Utah football legend, the super
- 1:05Speaker 2: bowl champion, the head coach of the Rancho Bernardo Broncos,
- 1:09Speaker 2: Eric Weddle.
- 1:11Speaker 3: What's up legend.
- 1:13Speaker 4: What is the word? Are we, are we living good?
- 1:17Speaker 4: Are we being great?
- 1:19Speaker 3: Always.
- 1:19Speaker 2: It's a beautiful day here in salt Lake city.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Perfect temperature, blue skies, hockey tonight.
- 1:26Speaker 2: And, you know, a bi-week for Utah football, which if
- 1:29Speaker 2: I'm being honest, I don't love, right? We get into
- 1:31Speaker 2: this rhythm for the season and then you're like, ah, crap,
- 1:34Speaker 2: there's no game this week. But I guess, you know,
- 1:37Speaker 2: we'll spend it watching general conference instead or something.
- 1:43Speaker 3: As a player, how did you approach bi-weeks? Did you
- 1:46Speaker 3: enjoy bi-weeks?
- 1:47Speaker 2: Is it something that you didn't like because it got
- 1:50Speaker 2: you out of that rhythm I just mentioned? What's your
- 1:53Speaker 2: thought on the bi-week as a player?
- 1:56Speaker 4: Oh, shoot. Like bi-week during college was like a normal week.
- 2:04Speaker 4: So I think, I think back in the day we
- 2:07Speaker 4: get like, we got like Friday, Saturday, Sunday off, but
- 2:10Speaker 4: it was like a work week. And then for the
- 2:12Speaker 4: guys that didn't get a play or young guys, like
- 2:16Speaker 4: you were, it was like scrimmage every day. which was good.
- 2:21Speaker 4: Like you gotta, you gotta get the work in and develop.
- 2:23Speaker 4: And then in the NFL, it was awesome because it
- 2:26Speaker 4: was like, we're, we're barely, we're, we're just recovering from our,
- 2:32Speaker 4: from the bodies and getting, getting healthy and kind of
- 2:35Speaker 4: getting recharged. So I always look forward to it. Cause
- 2:39Speaker 4: then it gave me an opportunity to go like go
- 2:41Speaker 4: somewhere on the weekend, go to a game. Like a
- 2:44Speaker 4: lot of times I'd come out, come back to see
- 2:46Speaker 4: the Utah game and, or go home. We were Baltimore though.
- 2:50Speaker 4: That weekend was always a time that we come back
- 2:52Speaker 4: to California. So I enjoyed it. And I think it
- 2:55Speaker 4: was always much needed for the body. And then for
- 3:01Speaker 4: just to recharge.
- 3:04Speaker 2: This Utah football team, we we've been talking about, you know,
- 3:07Speaker 2: kind of for the bi-week, if you can change something,
- 3:10Speaker 2: if you can alter something, you can adjust something, you
- 3:12Speaker 2: can fix something.
- 3:14Speaker 3: In the bi-week, what would it be?
- 3:16Speaker 2: Well, first of all, I want to make sure that
- 3:18Speaker 2: everybody knows I'm talking, we're being real nitpicky here.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Cause this is a good team. This is a four
- 3:22Speaker 3: and O team.
- 3:23Speaker 2: You don't have to reinvent the wheel here, but if
- 3:26Speaker 2: there's something you have seen or have not seen from
- 3:28Speaker 2: this team, Eric, that you want to coming out of
- 3:31Speaker 2: the bi-week, what Morgan Scali calls you and says, Hey,
- 3:34Speaker 2: what do I need to fix before we get back
- 3:36Speaker 2: to action against Kansas? Is there something on the top
- 3:39Speaker 2: of your mind?
- 3:40Speaker 4: Wow. Uh, you know, after four weeks, there's always, like
- 3:48Speaker 4: you said, little things to work on. And I, and
- 3:50Speaker 4: I'm not really in tune with like, you know, how
- 3:54Speaker 4: efficient are we on third downs, red zone offense, you know,
- 4:00Speaker 4: the efficiency on first and second town creating big plays.
- 4:05Speaker 4: I know that that's going around of, how many times
- 4:08Speaker 4: we're throwing deeper and then completing. So it's really looking
- 4:13Speaker 4: at like the big picture and overall, you know, team-wise, culture-wise,
- 4:20Speaker 4: maybe doing something fun with them. I would probably do
- 4:24Speaker 4: something of that nature. But off the top of my head, honestly,
- 4:27Speaker 4: it would just be the techniques and fundamentals and the
- 4:32Speaker 4: little details of just playing football. So I would most
- 4:36Speaker 4: likely just focus on being tackling better, blocking better, being
- 4:42Speaker 4: more fundamentally sound on what we're being asked to do,
- 4:45Speaker 4: like almost going back to the basics of each position
- 4:49Speaker 4: group and really honing in on those coaching points and
- 4:54Speaker 4: less on scheme work. You know, the scheme is worked
- 5:00Speaker 4: out for the coaches getting ready for next week's game
- 5:03Speaker 4: and adding different wrinkles in and understanding where we need
- 5:06Speaker 4: to get better at So that would be just from
- 5:10Speaker 4: a coach's perspective now is more emphasizing the little details
- 5:14Speaker 4: and the techniques and fundamentals that the boys are being
- 5:17Speaker 4: asked to do.
- 5:19Speaker 2: I've been complaining really since week one about the defensive
- 5:23Speaker 2: ends having a hard time finishing.
- 5:25Speaker 3: They're getting there. They're pressuring. They're hurrying.
- 5:28Speaker 2: They're getting some hits. But we're still waiting for defensive
- 5:31Speaker 2: ends to be productive defensively. and to generate sacks. And
- 5:34Speaker 2: I've asked you some version of this question, probably 50
- 5:36Speaker 2: times in the past, but playing in the backend, playing
- 5:40Speaker 2: defensive back and, you know, knowing when a quarterback has
- 5:45Speaker 2: to throw off schedule or when a quarterback has to
- 5:47Speaker 2: throw on the run because he's flushed out of the
- 5:49Speaker 2: pocket or whatever, how crucial to what you do on
- 5:53Speaker 2: the backend is that pass rush, especially if you can
- 5:56Speaker 2: get it with four guys with your base rush.
- 6:00Speaker 4: Well, it's huge. And I think the game is a
- 6:04Speaker 4: little bit different in that aspect of how you call
- 6:08Speaker 4: certain situations like third and long, you know, third and
- 6:13Speaker 4: medium per se. Like, you know, in the NFL, the
- 6:16Speaker 4: ball is going to come out with it. You just
- 6:19Speaker 4: have an internal clock. Because one, these quarterbacks don't want
- 6:22Speaker 4: to get hit to the coordinators. Don't want to get
- 6:25Speaker 4: their quarterbacks hit three, your quarterback goes down, your season's done.
- 6:29Speaker 4: So there's so much riding on that position where in college,
- 6:33Speaker 4: it's just, you get these athletes and you get these
- 6:37Speaker 4: guys that can run around and make guys miss. And that's,
- 6:40Speaker 4: it's just like a different kind of mindset. And you
- 6:45Speaker 4: have to be a little bit more understanding, like those things,
- 6:48Speaker 4: the ball's not always going to come out. Like it's,
- 6:50Speaker 4: quarterbacks are so regimented to hit that third, third, to
- 6:53Speaker 4: hit that third stop, third step. And if it's not there,
- 6:56Speaker 4: you get one hitch and then the ball's out, right? Like,
- 6:59Speaker 4: and you really train yourself and the routes and everything
- 7:02Speaker 4: goes with it. So the defender, you're, you're, you have
- 7:05Speaker 4: an internal clock and you're really eliminate and anticipate and
- 7:08Speaker 4: really like jumping routes, knowing the timing of where you're
- 7:13Speaker 4: at on the field and the timing of the play.
- 7:15Speaker 4: So you have to be wary of that as a
- 7:19Speaker 4: defensive back. and in college is much different. Like third downs,
- 7:25Speaker 4: you play coverage. And a lot of times, like we're
- 7:28Speaker 4: not getting there because of the, you know, we, you
- 7:32Speaker 4: don't necessarily have those edge rushers that are the elite
- 7:36Speaker 4: of the lead that if you leave them one-on-one, they're
- 7:38Speaker 4: probably going to win. So for our, for our defensive end,
- 7:42Speaker 4: you just gotta keep working on like facts come in
- 7:44Speaker 4: bunches and any time the coverage with it and then
- 7:46Speaker 4: the pressure package. So I don't know. I think it's,
- 7:51Speaker 4: I think it's something that, you know, when you bring
- 7:54Speaker 4: that up, I think it's something that they could work on,
- 7:56Speaker 4: and I think it's something that they'll get better at.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Again, I'm being real nitpicky here.
- 8:01Speaker 2: If you have to manufacture your pressure with, you know,
- 8:06Speaker 2: a blitzing linebacker or you've got to creep a corner
- 8:09Speaker 2: in to come off the edge or whatever else, and
- 8:12Speaker 2: that shows on film, and now an opposing offensive coordinator
- 8:17Speaker 2: is able to, you know, predict that or is able to,
- 8:21Speaker 2: to try to work with his quarterback to recognize it
- 8:24Speaker 2: and say, all right, you're going to throw into that
- 8:25Speaker 2: empty space that is being created by the blitzer. You
- 8:30Speaker 2: quarterbacked the defense so many times to, to counter move
- 8:35Speaker 2: the counter move, right? So how effective can you be
- 8:40Speaker 2: comparatively if you have to manufacture pressure other ways and
- 8:44Speaker 2: make sure that you don't leave those, those gaps, those
- 8:47Speaker 2: vacancies that, a good offensive coordinator, a good quarterback, are
- 8:50Speaker 2: going to recognize or are going to exploit?
- 8:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, that's tying in the disguise and the
- 8:56Speaker 4: movement with the brush, with the blitz, and then understanding, like,
- 9:01Speaker 4: you don't just blitz to blitz, right? So if you're
- 9:04Speaker 4: trying to manipulate, one, the ID and manipulate the rules
- 9:10Speaker 4: of pass pro, right? Like, you can... by your front
- 9:14Speaker 4: and by your alignment of your linebackers who are mugged
- 9:16Speaker 4: up in there or in line in the B gap
- 9:19Speaker 4: or on the edge, you can basically determine how they're
- 9:21Speaker 4: going to, how they're going to block you from the
- 9:25Speaker 4: offense perspective. Are they going to go three man zone
- 9:28Speaker 4: and man ID the other way with the back? Are
- 9:31Speaker 4: they going to go four man side? Are they going
- 9:32Speaker 4: to go full slide with the Y and the H
- 9:34Speaker 4: coming back? Like you can know that. So then you
- 9:37Speaker 4: build your pressure package off of that. So you're going
- 9:39Speaker 4: to get free runners, right? Like, If you're blitzing just
- 9:42Speaker 4: a blitz, which in most cases they're not, like they
- 9:46Speaker 4: do this work, but in most cases you want to
- 9:49Speaker 4: make sure that you're building your pressure package so you're
- 9:52Speaker 4: getting to the quarterback. Because if not, then you might
- 9:55Speaker 4: as well play coverage and then deal with it then
- 9:57Speaker 4: cause now you got an extra guy or maybe you
- 9:58Speaker 4: have two extra guys. And then on top of that,
- 10:01Speaker 4: you can also add in Sims where, you know, we
- 10:03Speaker 4: got linebackers that are freaking good. So building in simulated
- 10:08Speaker 4: rushes where you could play there, you know, five under
- 10:12Speaker 4: two D you could play, you could play a normal
- 10:15Speaker 4: four into three D because you can roll coverage where
- 10:17Speaker 4: the corner is now playing a cloud. and then roll
- 10:21Speaker 4: the safeties over the top, like different things like that,
- 10:24Speaker 4: where you're blitzing a linebacker, but dropping an end. And
- 10:27Speaker 4: now you're getting one-on-one with the back, which in the league,
- 10:30Speaker 4: if you get one-on-one with the back, that's a hundred
- 10:32Speaker 4: percent win for the defense, because that linebacker is going
- 10:35Speaker 4: to beast that running back every time. So then adding
- 10:39Speaker 4: those types of things in the word, now you're still
- 10:41Speaker 4: having seven guys in coverage, but you're now getting a rush.
- 10:45Speaker 4: You're getting a one-on-one with the back, which is, which
- 10:48Speaker 4: is always a great opportunity for the defense.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Eric Weddle is our guest here talking all things Utah
- 10:53Speaker 2: football for now on the Sean O'Connell Show. How many
- 10:57Speaker 2: times in your career did you have an interception taken
- 11:00Speaker 2: away from you by a replay by a referee saying
- 11:05Speaker 2: it wasn't a catch? We saw that happen to Rabbit
- 11:07Speaker 2: Evans this last week, and it was egregious. I thought
- 11:11Speaker 2: that the replay was going to correct it, and then
- 11:14Speaker 2: it didn't correct it. And look, he did a great
- 11:16Speaker 2: job of just continuing to play and continuing to excel
- 11:20Speaker 2: and all that kind of stuff.
- 11:21Speaker 3: I'm petty, man.
- 11:22Speaker 2: I would be finding that referee's address. I'd be like,
- 11:25Speaker 2: I needed that interception. Why did you do this to me?
- 11:28Speaker 2: How many times has that happened to you in your career?
- 11:31Speaker 4: Oh, man. Over a replay or.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Well, just where you're like, that was a pick and
- 11:37Speaker 2: they didn't give you credit for the pick.
- 11:38Speaker 4: Yeah, well, I've had numerous where they gave you a
- 11:42Speaker 4: bogus holding call or... a PI call that never happened.
- 11:49Speaker 4: That wasn't for me. It was like another player during
- 11:52Speaker 4: the play. So I've had, I've had a few of those.
- 11:55Speaker 3: Wait, correct me if I'm wrong.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Did that, it didn't that happen when you had like
- 11:59Speaker 2: a game ceiling pick in a, in a year in Baltimore.
- 12:04Speaker 2: And it was like, you guys were either going to
- 12:06Speaker 2: make the playoffs or not based on that game ceiling pick.
- 12:09Speaker 3: And they took it away from you.
- 12:10Speaker 4: Speaker 3 6th and then three plays later, they went
- 12:13Speaker 4: 40 yard touchdown and our season was done.
- 12:16Speaker 3: Terrible.
- 12:16Speaker 2: I remember that play so distinctly because it was a
- 12:19Speaker 2: phantom defensive hold or it.
- 12:25Speaker 4: Was just standing at 10 yards and the receiver ran
- 12:28Speaker 4: through them and they both fell and they called them
- 12:30Speaker 4: a whole holding. I was like, what are we doing?
- 12:35Speaker 4: I mean, like, just like, just like the one in
- 12:38Speaker 4: the Rams game. I mean, the same, same, like how
- 12:43Speaker 4: just in my, in my thought process of it all,
- 12:46Speaker 4: like rest, rest of a hard-knock job. My, my issue is,
- 12:50Speaker 4: is why not the judge, the side judge that was
- 12:52Speaker 4: in front of the play who sees it clearly not
- 12:56Speaker 4: meet with that rep and say, all right, what'd you see?
- 12:59Speaker 4: Here's what I saw. I don't think it was PI.
- 13:01Speaker 4: Let's pick it up. Right. Like the back judge obviously
- 13:05Speaker 4: threw it and maybe he saw whatever he saw, but
- 13:08Speaker 4: is clear as day. So in rabbit's case, like I, the,
- 13:12Speaker 4: the announcers were saying, this is a pig. They don't
- 13:16Speaker 4: get a call. And then of course the Fox, whoever
- 13:18Speaker 4: the old ref is that just comes on there, gets
- 13:21Speaker 4: paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to come on for
- 13:24Speaker 4: 20 seconds. I need to get that job.
- 13:27Speaker 2: .
- 13:31Speaker 3: .
- 13:33Speaker 4: And half the
- 13:37Speaker 4: time you're just siding with the rest because you're an
- 13:39Speaker 4: old breath.
- 13:40Speaker 3: That's right.
- 13:40Speaker 4: And so, yeah, that was, there've been some, definitely some
- 13:46Speaker 4: calls out there so far this season. You're just like, well,
- 13:49Speaker 4: especially at the NFL, like, you don't know if you're
- 13:52Speaker 4: Patrick or Holmes and you get touched with a pinky,
- 13:54Speaker 4: you're getting a rough in the pastor every time, even
- 13:58Speaker 4: though the dude does exactly what the textbook says of
- 14:01Speaker 4: hitting hands up, falling off and still get it where
- 14:05Speaker 4: it's like, Where are we going? Do we want to
- 14:08Speaker 4: make this game unwatchable? Because sometimes it is.
- 14:12Speaker 2: As a defensive player, you were in the league for
- 14:16Speaker 2: the near two decades of when a lot of this
- 14:19Speaker 2: stuff was really being put into place to favor quarterback play,
- 14:24Speaker 2: to explode offensive numbers and things like that. And you
- 14:28Speaker 2: hear guys, defensive players especially, say like, hey, are we
- 14:31Speaker 2: still playing football?
- 14:32Speaker 3: What am I allowed to do? What am I not
- 14:34Speaker 3: allowed to do?
- 14:36Speaker 2: How big a part of the discussion is that in
- 14:38Speaker 2: your film room, in your locker room, when you're going
- 14:41Speaker 2: up against especially the Chiefs or especially when it was
- 14:43Speaker 2: Tom Brady or whatever, when you feel like these are
- 14:46Speaker 2: the players the league is going to protect, we have
- 14:49Speaker 2: to alter the way we play against them. Is it
- 14:51Speaker 2: something that actually goes into a game plan?
- 14:55Speaker 4: Actually, it does. How to tackle... how to tackle certain guys. What,
- 15:01Speaker 4: what are the rules? Like we, we have days where
- 15:03Speaker 4: we have the rules officials come in, they explain the rules.
- 15:07Speaker 4: Then we get in these, like not arguments, but we're just,
- 15:10Speaker 4: and they're, they're like, in most cases, the restaurant on
- 15:13Speaker 4: our side. So it's just like, Hey, this is, this
- 15:16Speaker 4: is what we're being told. This is how we have
- 15:18Speaker 4: to call it. Uh, this is how you have to
- 15:20Speaker 4: do it. And like, so it's a good back and
- 15:22Speaker 4: forth conversation. The day to day, it's like, it's like, Hey,
- 15:26Speaker 4: do I agree with, what SC did after the play
- 15:32Speaker 4: of with the Dante Moore. Of course not. Like I don't,
- 15:35Speaker 4: I would, the kid would be kicked off my team
- 15:37Speaker 4: if they act like that. Right. And I don't, you know,
- 15:40Speaker 4: get into specifics. Maybe it was other things, but the
- 15:43Speaker 4: way you acted, but really the play of is not
- 15:47Speaker 4: a dirty play. And it's not like an egregious, like
- 15:50Speaker 4: the dude is already committed to tackling Dante Moore. Hey,
- 15:54Speaker 4: Dante Moore, you need to slide earlier. Yeah. Right. You
- 15:57Speaker 4: need to slide earlier or like real court, like not
- 16:01Speaker 4: real quarterbacks or players, but if quarterbacks just started going
- 16:05Speaker 4: first and actually like understand how to take hits and
- 16:07Speaker 4: run the football, you're not going to get hurt. How
- 16:10Speaker 4: many times have we seen that exact case? or their
- 16:13Speaker 4: head hits the ground because they're sliding, like, quit sliding.
- 16:17Speaker 4: Or if you're going to slide, slide five yards early
- 16:20Speaker 4: so you're not going to get your head knocked off
- 16:23Speaker 4: because these dudes are coming, and we're not– we cannot
- 16:27Speaker 4: stop in that situation. Like, the only way to be
- 16:29Speaker 4: able to stop is you're a safety like I was,
- 16:33Speaker 4: and I knew these guys were going to slide, right?
- 16:35Speaker 4: But linebackers aren't thinking like that. Like, and they don't
- 16:39Speaker 4: have enough time and space to really gauge the runner
- 16:42Speaker 4: and gauge when he's going to start to lighten up.
- 16:45Speaker 4: You can feel it as a tackler. These other guys,
- 16:48Speaker 4: it's too much. You're just chancing it. Unfortunately, he got hurt,
- 16:54Speaker 4: but to say that guy was a dirty hit, that's
- 16:56Speaker 4: just people not knowing ever played football.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Is it time to accept the fact that Jim Harbaugh
- 17:05Speaker 2: is not a great NFL coach?
- 17:08Speaker 3: He might not be a great college coach either.
- 17:10Speaker 2: He's good at the weird sign stealing and stuff like that.
- 17:13Speaker 2: But the Chargers are off to a disastrous start. High
- 17:17Speaker 2: expectations this year. His welcome wore out in San Francisco
- 17:21Speaker 2: after not too long. Is it time to just accept
- 17:24Speaker 2: the fact that maybe the NFL is not where Jim
- 17:27Speaker 2: Harbaugh needs to be coaching?
- 17:29Speaker 4: It's just, it's pretty interesting. I don't really have really
- 17:36Speaker 4: a pinpoint answer why. The only thing that history has
- 17:41Speaker 4: told us as he has good turnarounds. And then over
- 17:45Speaker 4: time it, it putters out and then he leaves or
- 17:48Speaker 4: he loses. And so I don't know, like I've talked
- 17:52Speaker 4: to a few guys and they all, they all like them.
- 17:54Speaker 4: They think he's a little corny at times, but they like,
- 17:57Speaker 4: they think he's real. I think he's genuine. I think
- 17:59Speaker 4: he's like, that's just, that's just Jim Harbaugh. Like he
- 18:01Speaker 4: just does just weird things, but I don't know why
- 18:06Speaker 4: they are so bad. I don't think they've, it's kind
- 18:11Speaker 4: of been known over the years. Like they've missed on
- 18:15Speaker 4: some guys on the perimeter. Herbert makes a lot of
- 18:17Speaker 4: these guys better than what they are. The offensive line
- 18:20Speaker 4: has been in influx. Like when you have your two
- 18:22Speaker 4: first round guys hurt or not playing last year. And
- 18:26Speaker 4: then this year there, I don't know. I haven't really
- 18:29Speaker 4: watched many games to this really like say what the
- 18:33Speaker 4: issues are, but to be all in three and looking
- 18:35Speaker 4: at that schedule and potentially being all in nine, like
- 18:38Speaker 4: you're not going to be favored in the next, six games.
- 18:41Speaker 4: I don't know how they recover. And then what do
- 18:43Speaker 4: they do moving forward? It's just, it's just, it's just unfortunate,
- 18:49Speaker 4: but I don't, man, it shouldn't, it shouldn't be happening, honestly.
- 18:54Speaker 4: But when you got like first round picks that can't
- 18:56Speaker 4: catch the ball and they should have never been picked.
- 19:00Speaker 4: I think that was Telesco's last year. Like that was
- 19:03Speaker 4: one of many blown draft picks. that sets you back,
- 19:07Speaker 4: and then how do they keep trotting that guy out
- 19:09Speaker 4: on the field? When you think about their perimeter athlete players,
- 19:15Speaker 4: who's going to go win some one-on-ones for you? If
- 19:18Speaker 4: you're relying on Ladd McConkie, that's pretty good as a
- 19:24Speaker 4: third guy, but not as a number one in the NFL.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Ladd McConkie catching strays here on the Sean O'Connell show.
- 19:32Speaker 3: Poor guy. He'll love to see it.
- 19:35Speaker 4: I'm just saying, who's the, who's another guy that John,
- 19:38Speaker 4: the Jenkins, Jenkins, the first TCU guy is awful. I've
- 19:41Speaker 4: already said that. I don't even know who else they have. Right.
- 19:44Speaker 4: Like who, who else is their players? Yeah.
- 19:46Speaker 3: They, they don't.
- 19:47Speaker 2: I mean, when you, when you're talking about weapons, weapons
- 19:50Speaker 2: on the edge and by the way, everybody's on the
- 19:53Speaker 2: injury report right now, which may or may not be normal.
- 19:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 19:58Speaker 3: You're, you're, you're in a bad spot right now. If
- 20:01Speaker 3: you're a charger fan and.
- 20:04Speaker 4: And listen, I root for all small white receivers. Like
- 20:08Speaker 4: there's not a lot, all, a lot of us. So
- 20:10Speaker 4: it's not anything against them. It says you're, we need
- 20:13Speaker 4: you as a number three. We don't need you as
- 20:14Speaker 4: a number one.
- 20:17Speaker 4: .
- 20:17Speaker 3: .
- 20:22Speaker 4: .
- 20:28Speaker 2: .
- 20:31Speaker 4: We're talking about playoffs, not a game.
- 20:35Speaker 3: Yes, her.
- 20:38Speaker 4: Little shout out to her members for all you in
- 20:41Speaker 4: the listener that don't know. All I can say is this.
- 20:45Speaker 4: I don't know if they're legit or not. I just
- 20:47Speaker 4: love when you see a guy who has the factor
- 20:53Speaker 4: culture togetherness team, like what Kubiak has done there. Like,
- 21:02Speaker 4: you can just see it. You see guys that play
- 21:04Speaker 4: hard for certain coaches, and you get up there and you, like,
- 21:07Speaker 4: hear them speak. It's like, oh, this guy knows what
- 21:11Speaker 4: he's doing. You could say the same thing about Bob
- 21:14Speaker 4: Chesney at UCLA, right? Like, look what he's done. He's
- 21:18Speaker 4: transformed UCLA back to being a respectable program in four games.
- 21:22Speaker 4: you know, really six months of being on the job.
- 21:25Speaker 4: It's just like some coaches have it. So I appreciate that.
- 21:30Speaker 4: Are they going to be like playoff team? I don't know. Like, well, that'll,
- 21:34Speaker 4: that'll work itself out. But man, it's awesome to see
- 21:37Speaker 4: like a team playing together, connected, united. Like you can
- 21:41Speaker 4: say the same thing about Morgan. Like Morgan's a great coach.
- 21:45Speaker 4: Morgan is top notch, right. Of knowing the game. But
- 21:49Speaker 4: what I think is his best quality is he is
- 21:52Speaker 4: a igniter. He brings others with him. He has a
- 21:56Speaker 4: vision and a culture, and he unites people, right? He
- 21:59Speaker 4: brings people together. And it shows, right? And we've talked
- 22:03Speaker 4: about this in the offseason. He just has that it factor.
- 22:07Speaker 4: So you can go down the line of guys that
- 22:10Speaker 4: have it and don't. So are the Raiders for real
- 22:14Speaker 4: right now? They're for real? So the answer is yes.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Eric Weddle for another minute or two here on the
- 22:22Speaker 2: Sean O'Connell show, talking all things football.
- 22:26Speaker 3: I got to ask you this.
- 22:28Speaker 2: If you Morgan Scali had, there's a UFC event in
- 22:33Speaker 2: Salt Lake city this weekend and Morgan Scali had a
- 22:36Speaker 2: former NFL player. He was a great at South Florida
- 22:40Speaker 2: or Florida international. He's the all time leading tackler from
- 22:43Speaker 2: Florida international. Tried it in the NFL. Didn't work out
- 22:46Speaker 2: for him in the NFL. He's an undefeated MMA fighter now.
- 22:49Speaker 2: You have to have one of your former teammates, college
- 22:52Speaker 2: or pro, win a UFC fight for you. It can't
- 22:55Speaker 2: be me because I think I'm the only former teammate
- 22:57Speaker 2: of yours who actually did win a UFC fight. But
- 23:00Speaker 2: it's somebody who hasn't actually ended up fighting. If you've
- 23:02Speaker 2: got to pick one of those guys to go win
- 23:04Speaker 2: you a fight, who are you picking?
- 23:14Speaker 4: Well... you kind of think of like, all right, who's
- 23:21Speaker 4: a lot of these guys can fight, but can they
- 23:23Speaker 4: really fight? That's up in the air. And you think
- 23:27Speaker 4: of like just some nasty tough dudes, but that in UFC,
- 23:30Speaker 4: like that doesn't matter.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Uh, I don't know.
- 23:34Speaker 4: Like the first thing that pops in my mind is
- 23:36Speaker 4: Tony Jefferson. Cause he grew up boxing and, or Tom Zbikowski, uh.
- 23:43Speaker 2: That's one of those guys is the answer. Zbikowski had
- 23:46Speaker 2: some pro boxing matches.
- 23:47Speaker 4: Yeah. He had plenty of professional bouts and then went
- 23:51Speaker 4: the pro route after he was done playing. So I
- 23:54Speaker 4: don't think it really like matured like he would have
- 23:57Speaker 4: if he just would have not played NFL. But I
- 24:00Speaker 4: think one of those two would give us the best
- 24:02Speaker 4: shot of making a respectable fight for more than a
- 24:05Speaker 4: minute or two.
- 24:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I would go with Zbikowski.
- 24:09Speaker 2: He finished his professional boxing career 8-0.
- 24:14Speaker 3: With five knockouts. And he had over 100 amateur bouts.
- 24:19Speaker 4: Yeah, he knows how to take a punch. His face
- 24:23Speaker 4: is calloused a little bit. Not like UFC, but he
- 24:25Speaker 4: knows a little bit of what that world is. And so,
- 24:31Speaker 4: you know, he would probably be a guy.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Teach him how to defend a takedown, and he's probably
- 24:36Speaker 2: going to win. That's a good shout. That's a good
- 24:38Speaker 2: call by you. All right, who is it this week?
- 24:41Speaker 2: You got Del Norte for your Rancho Bernardo Broncos.
- 24:46Speaker 3: How much do we hate Del Norte?
- 24:49Speaker 4: Well, it's going to be a great game. We don't
- 24:52Speaker 4: hate anybody.
- 24:55Speaker 3: We like us that are supporting you, not you. You're classy.
- 24:59Speaker 4: We don't, we don't, we dislike, we don't hate. Yeah.
- 25:04Speaker 4: Like this is going to be, it's going to be
- 25:07Speaker 4: a great game at our place. We, you know, we're
- 25:11Speaker 4: all black and you need to make blackout game. So
- 25:14Speaker 4: a lot of fun stuff, a lot, a lot will
- 25:16Speaker 4: be riding on it. As the season goes on league,
- 25:19Speaker 4: this is a league game. and playoffs will be, will
- 25:23Speaker 4: be big for this. And so, and a little birdie
- 25:28Speaker 4: told me that a Utah coach is going to come
- 25:31Speaker 4: down and, and check out gauge this week. So it's
- 25:34Speaker 4: pretty cool to have a coach come down and be
- 25:38Speaker 4: on their bi-week. They could be anywhere. So we don't
- 25:41Speaker 4: take that lightly. Wow.
- 25:43Speaker 3: I like that. That's good.
- 25:44Speaker 2: That's good to hear. The Del Norte night Hawks, by
- 25:48Speaker 2: the way. They are four and one to four and
- 25:54Speaker 2: one team square enough. It'll be a big one at
- 25:56Speaker 2: Rancho Bernardo. A good luck with that. Tell whoever that
- 26:02Speaker 2: mysterious Utah coaches, tell them that we said hello and
- 26:06Speaker 2: we'll chat again next week.
- 26:07Speaker 3: Appreciate you, my guy.
- 26:08Speaker 4: You got it. I'll, I'll unveil who it is next
- 26:11Speaker 4: week's show. Perfect.
- 26:14Speaker 3: That's wonderful.
- 26:15Speaker 4: Speaker 0 7, you got it. Love you, bro.
- 26:17Speaker 3: Love you, dude.
- 26:18Speaker 2: That's Eric Weddle. The Utah football legend by week for Utah.
- 26:24Speaker 2: We talked about this. It is a big, big, big
- 26:27Speaker 2: recruiting week. The coaches get out on the road. They
- 26:30Speaker 2: show up to these guys, hometowns, they show up at
- 26:32Speaker 2: their games.
- 26:35Speaker 3: It would be.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Amazing if they said the assistant off safety.
- 26:39Speaker 3: Hey, well, Gherky here.
- 26:46Speaker 4: What?
- 26:47Speaker 5: I'm here to check out your son. He's a safety, right?
- 26:49Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 26:50Speaker 3: Why are you here?
- 26:51Speaker 2: He might be playing quarterback and safety, but what could
- 26:55Speaker 2: he be as a guard?
- 26:58Speaker 5: I think we can confidently say it's not going to
- 27:01Speaker 5: put 150 more pounds on him here. Now here's a
- 27:04Speaker 5: real question, right? Who do you want to send?
- 27:08Speaker 2: If you're, if you're wanting to maximize gauge Weddell, coming
- 27:14Speaker 2: to the university of Utah.
- 27:15Speaker 3: All right.
- 27:17Speaker 2: And this is, this applies to every recruit that Utah
- 27:20Speaker 2: is talking to and talking about, but he's the one,
- 27:23Speaker 2: he is the jewel of the class of the 28
- 27:26Speaker 2: class that people want to see.
- 27:27Speaker 4: Right?
- 27:28Speaker 3: So who would you actually send now?
- 27:31Speaker 2: The low hanging fruit answer is, well, you go Morgan
- 27:34Speaker 2: Scali because he's the head coach and it's the most
- 27:37Speaker 2: meaningful thing. If the head coach shows up, right. But
- 27:42Speaker 2: That's old hat for gauge. Weddle gauge has no Morgan
- 27:45Speaker 2: literally since he was born. He's been around Morgan, no
- 27:50Speaker 2: exaggeration a hundred times. So I think that he probably
- 27:55Speaker 2: already has a good sense of, do I like Morgan?
- 27:58Speaker 3: Can I play for Morgan?
- 27:59Speaker 2: Do I want to be around like I don't think
- 28:01Speaker 2: Morgan is a question in Gage Weddle's mind. This is,
- 28:04Speaker 2: by the way, I don't have insider knowledge on this.
- 28:08Speaker 2: This is not information coming from any Weddle person. I'm
- 28:11Speaker 2: playing hypotheticals here. Colton Swan knows Gage through the recruiting process.
- 28:21Speaker 5: He'd be And obviously the defensive coordinator is a big wig.
- 28:25Speaker 3: He's your, he's your defensive coordinator.
- 28:27Speaker 2: If you're, if you're trying to really like send the
- 28:29Speaker 2: message to the kid and have it communicated like this,
- 28:33Speaker 2: I'm going to be your coach. I'm going to be
- 28:34Speaker 2: the guy. Or do you send his position coach? Do
- 28:38Speaker 2: you send coach Odom who also coached dad?
- 28:41Speaker 4: Right.
- 28:42Speaker 2: Like, there's an obvious connection there, but there's been a
- 28:45Speaker 2: lot fewer rendezvous over the lifetime of this young player.
- 28:49Speaker 3: So that's someone he doesn't actually know. Do you surrender for,
- 28:52Speaker 3: do you, for me, do you.
- 28:54Speaker 2: Send the guy who can talk his way into or
- 28:57Speaker 2: out of any room?
- 28:58Speaker 3: Sharif Shaw.
- 28:59Speaker 5: We're thinking of the exact same person. I'm like, and,
- 29:02Speaker 5: and that's not, not a position coach, but he's a
- 29:04Speaker 5: position coach adjacent. He's the cornerbacks coach. He can certainly
- 29:08Speaker 5: give him information as to how they plan on using
- 29:13Speaker 5: him as a DB.
- 29:14Speaker 3: And by the way, who's to say that gauge doesn't
- 29:16Speaker 3: end up playing corner ever.
- 29:17Speaker 4: Yeah. Right.
- 29:19Speaker 3: Like his dad did. His dad played boundary. His dad
- 29:24Speaker 3: played nickel.
- 29:26Speaker 2: His dad played safety punter quarterback in the wildcat formations, right?
- 29:31Speaker 2: Like that's the vision for gauge is that they not
- 29:36Speaker 2: to be reductive, but they want them to be just
- 29:38Speaker 2: like Eric was. He's that versatile and athlete. He's an
- 29:40Speaker 2: incredible football player.
- 29:43Speaker 3: So who do you send?
- 29:44Speaker 2: If you're just like, I want, I want you to
- 29:46Speaker 2: get to know everybody. I want you to know the
- 29:49Speaker 2: whole family vibe here and okay. Brechterfield go out there.
- 29:52Speaker 2: Let's go.
- 29:53Speaker 5: I mean, I don't know why you don't send If
- 29:57Speaker 5: that's what we're talking about here, let's get to know everybody. Okay.
- 30:00Speaker 2: When Eric comes on next week, he's going to say, yeah,
- 30:02Speaker 2: Morgan Scali was at the game.
- 30:04Speaker 3: I think that's probably what he's going to say. Cause
- 30:05Speaker 3: that's like, that's like the big.
- 30:07Speaker 5: Feature, but also like the head coach doesn't have to,
- 30:11Speaker 5: he's not the safeties coach anymore. He's not the defensive
- 30:14Speaker 5: coordinator anymore. He doesn't have to go on these, these
- 30:16Speaker 5: recruiting trips.
- 30:17Speaker 2: Well, and he also like, That's not in, that's not
- 30:21Speaker 2: a question in my opinion. That's not a question in
- 30:25Speaker 2: the mind of Weddle the younger. Could I play for
- 30:28Speaker 2: Morgan Scali? He knows he could play for Morgan Scali.
- 30:30Speaker 2: He knows he gets along with Morgan Scali. He knows
- 30:32Speaker 2: his dad gets along with Morgan Scali. He knows his
- 30:34Speaker 2: mom gets along with Morgan Scali. He knows that he
- 30:36Speaker 2: likes the Morgan Scali culture. I would maybe be more
- 30:40Speaker 2: curious because I'm getting like, it's coming down to it.
- 30:45Speaker 2: I think that he's probably going to commit before his
- 30:47Speaker 2: senior year.
- 30:48Speaker 5: I wondered if he was going to commit on Eric
- 30:50Speaker 5: Weddle day, the Arkansas game, but that didn't happen.
- 30:53Speaker 2: Well, the right thing to do is to not because
- 30:56Speaker 2: let his dad have his own day. But I think that,
- 31:00Speaker 2: you know, they're probably not going to want to draw
- 31:02Speaker 2: this process out all that much longer. And there's other
- 31:06Speaker 2: teams make like Cal made a really strong push. They
- 31:08Speaker 2: went and visited a Cal made Cal made a really
- 31:10Speaker 2: strong push. BYU is making an incredibly strong push. Uh,
- 31:15Speaker 2: Georgia is making a big push. Ohio State wants him, right?
- 31:19Speaker 2: So how do you beat that out? You have to
- 31:21Speaker 2: be able to sit down and you have to be
- 31:23Speaker 2: able to have the conversations about what it's actually going
- 31:26Speaker 2: to look like.
- 31:26Speaker 3: Do you actually get along with me?
- 31:28Speaker 2: Are you and I actually on the same page as
- 31:31Speaker 2: your defensive coordinator, as your position coach, as a guy? Like,
- 31:35Speaker 2: I think it's going to be Morgan, but you know what?
- 31:38Speaker 2: Why not send all of them if you really want
- 31:40Speaker 2: the dude? Yeah, send maybe Morgan, Odom. and Sharif saw
- 31:46Speaker 2: Shaw and they go like, they go from the game
- 31:48Speaker 2: to a rodeo.
- 31:50Speaker 5: Oh yeah.
- 31:52Speaker 2: And Colton's one Colton Swan does like make it like
- 31:55Speaker 2: he's just like schedules.
- 31:56Speaker 5: He enters a calf roping event in California.
- 32:00Speaker 2: If I can, if I can rope this calf or
- 32:02Speaker 2: I can wrestle this steer you're committing tomorrow deal.
- 32:06Speaker 5: Colton sounds like a guy that would say rassle. He
- 32:10Speaker 5: seems like that kind of guy.
- 32:12Speaker 3: He is that kind of guy. He's that kind of guy.
- 32:13Speaker 3: We're way over time.
- 32:14Speaker 5: Or Swanee as your guy. Who's the offensive lineman who
- 32:19Speaker 5: called in?
- 32:19Speaker 3: Shout out.
- 32:21Speaker 5: Weber State.
- 32:23Speaker 3: David Hale.
- 32:24Speaker 5: David Hale. As Dave Hale likes to call him, Swanee.
- 32:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 32:29Speaker 3: Shout out to you, Dave. Shout out to Hale. I
- 32:31Speaker 3: hope you're listening again today.
- 32:32Speaker 5: And everyone down here in Weber State South.
- 32:36Speaker 4: All right.
- 32:37Speaker 2: We got a PGA tour leaderboard update for you in
- 32:39Speaker 2: the daily dump.
- 32:40Speaker 3: That's coming next. It's the Sean O'Connell show on ESPN,
- 32:42Speaker 3: 700 92 on FM.
