Speaker 1: Chapter thirteen, The pirate crew set sail. Tom's mind was
• 0:06
Speaker 1: made up. Now he was gloomy and desperate. He was
• 0:09
Speaker 1: a forsaken, friendless boy, he said, nobody loved him. When
• 0:13
Speaker 1: they found out what they had driven him to, perhaps
• 0:16
Speaker 1: they would be sorry. He had tried to do right
• 0:18
Speaker 1: and get along, but they would not let him. Since
• 0:21
Speaker 1: nothing would do them but to get rid of him.
• 0:23
Speaker 1: Let it be so, and let them blame him for
• 0:26
Speaker 1: the consequences. Why shouldn't they What right had the friendless
• 0:30
Speaker 1: to complain? Yes, they had forced him to it. At
• 0:33
Speaker 1: last he would lead a life of crime. There was
• 0:36
Speaker 1: no choice. By this time he was far down Meadow Lane,
• 0:40
Speaker 1: and the bell for school to take up tingled faintly
• 0:43
Speaker 1: upon his ear. He sobbed now to think he should
• 0:46
Speaker 1: never never hear that old, familiar sound any more. It
• 0:50
Speaker 1: was very hard, but it was forced on him, since
• 0:53
Speaker 1: he was driven out into the cold world. He must submit.
• 0:57
Speaker 1: But he forgave them. Then sobs came thick and fast.
• 1:03
Speaker 1: Just at this point he met his soul's sworn comrade
• 1:05
Speaker 1: Joe Harper, hard eyed and with evidently a great and
• 1:09
Speaker 1: dismal purpose in his heart. Plainly, here were two souls
• 1:13
Speaker 1: with but a single thought. Tom, wiping his eyes with
• 1:17
Speaker 1: his sleeve, began to blubber out something about a resolution
• 1:20
Speaker 1: to escape from hard usage and lack of sympathy at
• 1:23
Speaker 1: home by roaming abroad into the great world, never to return,
• 1:27
Speaker 1: and ended by hoping that Joe would not forget him.
• 1:31
Speaker 1: But it transpired that this was a request which Joe
• 1:33
Speaker 1: had just been going to make of Tom, and had
• 1:36
Speaker 1: come to hunt him up for that purpose. His mother
• 1:39
Speaker 1: had whipped him for drinking some cream which he had
• 1:41
Speaker 1: never tasted and knew nothing about. It was plain that
• 1:45
Speaker 1: she was tired of him and wished him to go.
• 1:47
Speaker 1: If she felt that way. There was nothing for him
• 1:50
Speaker 1: to do but succumb. He hoped she would be happy
• 1:54
Speaker 1: and never regret having driven her poor boy out into
• 1:56
Speaker 1: the unfeeling world to suffer. And as the two boys
• 2:02
Speaker 1: walked sorrowing along, they made a new compact to stand
• 2:05
Speaker 1: by each other and be brothers and never separate till
• 2:08
Speaker 1: death relieved them of their troubles. Then they began to
• 2:11
Speaker 1: lay their plans. Joe was for being a hermit and
• 2:14
Speaker 1: living on crusts in a remote cave and dying sometime
• 2:18
Speaker 1: of cold and want and grief. But after listening to Tom,
• 2:21
Speaker 1: he conceded that there were some conspicuous advantages about a
• 2:25
Speaker 1: life of crime, and so he consented to be a pirate.
• 2:30
Speaker 1: Three miles below Saint Petersburg, at a point where the
• 2:33
Speaker 1: Mississippi River was a trifle over a mile wide, there
• 2:36
Speaker 1: was a long, narrow wooded island with a shallow bar
• 2:40
Speaker 1: at the head of it, and this offered well as
• 2:42
Speaker 1: a rendezvous. It was not inhabited. It lay far over
• 2:45
Speaker 1: towards the further shore a breast a dense and almost
• 2:48
Speaker 1: wholly unpeopled forest. So Jackson's Island was chosen. Who were
• 2:53
Speaker 1: to be the subjects of their parracies was a matter
• 2:56
Speaker 1: that did not occur to them. Then they hunted up
• 2:58
Speaker 1: Huckleberry Finn. When he joined them promptly, for all careers
• 3:02
Speaker 1: were won to him, he was indifferent. They presently separated
• 3:05
Speaker 1: to meet at a lonely spot on the river bank,
• 3:07
Speaker 1: two miles above the village at the favorite hour, which
• 3:11
Speaker 1: was midnight. There was a small log raft there which
• 3:14
Speaker 1: they meant to capture. Each would bring hooks and lines
• 3:18
Speaker 1: and such provision as he could steal. In the most
• 3:20
Speaker 1: dark and mysterious way as became outlaws, and before the
• 3:24
Speaker 1: afternoon was done, they had all managed to enjoy the
• 3:27
Speaker 1: sweet glory of spreading the fact that pretty soon the
• 3:30
Speaker 1: town would hear something. All who got this vague hint
• 3:34
Speaker 1: were cautioned to be mum and wait. About midnight, Tom
• 3:38
Speaker 1: arrived with a boiled ham and a few trifles, and
• 3:41
Speaker 1: stopped in a dense undergrowth on a small bluff overlooking
• 3:44
Speaker 1: the meeting place. It was starlight and very still. The
• 3:48
Speaker 1: mighty river lay like an ocean at rest. Tom listened
• 3:52
Speaker 1: a moment, but no sound disturbed the quiet. Then he
• 3:55
Speaker 1: gave a low, distinct whistle. It was answered from under
• 3:58
Speaker 1: the bluff. Tom whistled twice more. These signals were answered
• 4:02
Speaker 1: in the same way. Then a guarded voice said, who
• 4:06
Speaker 1: goes there? Tom Sawyer, the Black Avenger of the Spanish
• 4:10
Speaker 1: main name? Your names Huck Finn the Red Handed and
• 4:14
Speaker 1: Joe Harper, the Terror of the Seas. Tom had furnished
• 4:18
Speaker 1: these titles from his favorite literature, Tis Well give the countersign.
• 4:23
Speaker 1: Two hoarse whispers delivered the same awful word simultaneously to
• 4:28
Speaker 1: the brooding night blood. Then Tom tumbled his ham over
• 4:33
Speaker 1: the bluff and let himself down after it, tearing both
• 4:36
Speaker 1: skin and clothes to some extent in the effort. There
• 4:39
Speaker 1: was an easy, comfortable path along the shore under the bluff,
• 4:42
Speaker 1: but it lacked the advantages of difficulty in danger so
• 4:45
Speaker 1: valued by a pirate. The Terror of the Seas had
• 4:49
Speaker 1: brought a side of bacon, and had about worn himself
• 4:52
Speaker 1: out with getting it there. Finn the Red Handed had
• 4:55
Speaker 1: stolen a skillet and a quantity of half cured leaf tobacco,
• 4:59
Speaker 1: and had also bought a few corn cobs to make
• 5:01
Speaker 1: pipes with. But none of the pirates smoked or chewed
• 5:04
Speaker 1: but himself. The Black Avenger of the Spanish Maine, said
• 5:08
Speaker 1: it would never do to start without some fire. That
• 5:12
Speaker 1: was a wise thought. Matches were hardly known there in
• 5:14
Speaker 1: that day. They saw a fire smoldering upon a great
• 5:18
Speaker 1: raft a hundred yards above, and they went stealthily thither
• 5:21
Speaker 1: and helped themselves to a chunk. They made an imposing
• 5:24
Speaker 1: adventure of it, saying histed every now and then, and
• 5:27
Speaker 1: suddenly halting with finger on lip, moving with hands on
• 5:30
Speaker 1: imaginary dagger hilts, and giving orders in dismal whispers, that
• 5:34
Speaker 1: if the foe stirred, to let him have it to
• 5:37
Speaker 1: the hilt, because dead men tell no tales. They knew
• 5:42
Speaker 1: well enough that the raft's men were all down at
• 5:44
Speaker 1: the village, laying in stores or having a spree. But
• 5:46
Speaker 1: still that was no excuse for their conducting this thing
• 5:49
Speaker 1: in an unpiratical way. They shoved off presently, Tom in command,
• 5:54
Speaker 1: Huck at the after oar, and Joe at the foreward.
• 5:58
Speaker 1: Tom stood amidships, gloomy browed and with folded arms, and
• 6:02
Speaker 1: gave his orders in a low, stern whisper luff and
• 6:06
Speaker 1: bring her to the wind. Aye aye, sir, steady, steady,
• 6:11
Speaker 1: steady it is, sir, Let her go off a point
• 6:14
Speaker 1: point it is, sir. As the boy steadily and monotonously
• 6:17
Speaker 1: drove the raft toward mid stream. It was no doubt
• 6:20
Speaker 1: understood that these orders were given only for style, and
• 6:23
Speaker 1: were not intended to mean anything. In particular, what sails
• 6:27
Speaker 1: she carrying? Courses, topsails and flying jib Sir, send the
• 6:32
Speaker 1: ryals up, lay out aloft there half a dozen a
• 6:35
Speaker 1: ye fore top manstulzel lively Now aye aye, sir, shake
• 6:40
Speaker 1: out that mane to gallanzil sheets and braces. Now, my
• 6:43
Speaker 1: hearties aye aye, sir, heelam alee hard a port stand
• 6:48
Speaker 1: by to meet her when she comes port port now
• 6:51
Speaker 1: man with a will, steady, steady, it is sir. The
• 6:56
Speaker 1: raft drew beyond the middle of the river. The boys
• 6:58
Speaker 1: pointed her head right and then lay on their oars.
• 7:02
Speaker 1: The river was not high, so there was not more
• 7:04
Speaker 1: than a two or three mile current. Hardly a word
• 7:07
Speaker 1: was said during the next three quarters of an hour.
• 7:10
Speaker 1: Now the raft was passing before the distant town. Two
• 7:13
Speaker 1: or three glimmering lights showed where it lay, peacefully sleeping
• 7:17
Speaker 1: beyond the vague, vast sweep of a star gemmed water.
• 7:21
Speaker 1: Unconscious of the tremendous event that was happening, the Black
• 7:25
Speaker 1: Avengers stood still with folded arms, looking his last upon
• 7:29
Speaker 1: the scene of his former joys and his later sufferings,
• 7:33
Speaker 1: and wishing she could see him now abroad on the
• 7:36
Speaker 1: wild sea, facing peril and death, with dauntless heart, going
• 7:40
Speaker 1: to his doom with a grim smile on his lips.
• 7:44
Speaker 1: It was but a small strain on his imagination to
• 7:46
Speaker 1: remove Jackson Island beyond eyeshot of the village, and so
• 7:50
Speaker 1: he looked his last with a broken and satisfied heart.
• 7:54
Speaker 1: The other pirates were looking their last, too, and they
• 7:57
Speaker 1: all looked so long that they came near let the
• 8:00
Speaker 1: current drift them out of the range of the island.
• 8:03
Speaker 1: But they discovered the danger in time and made shift
• 8:06
Speaker 1: to avert it. About two o'clock in the morning, the
• 8:09
Speaker 1: raft grounded on the bar two hundred yards above the
• 8:11
Speaker 1: head of the island, and they waded back and forth
• 8:14
Speaker 1: until they had landed their freight. Part of the little
• 8:17
Speaker 1: raft's belongings consisted of an old sail, and this they
• 8:20
Speaker 1: spread over a nook in the bushes for a tent
• 8:22
Speaker 1: to shelter their provisions, but they themselves would sleep in
• 8:26
Speaker 1: the open air in good weather. As became outlaws, they
• 8:30
Speaker 1: built a fire against the side of a great log
• 8:32
Speaker 1: twenty or thirty steps within the somber depths of the forest,
• 8:36
Speaker 1: and then cooked some bacon in the frying pan for supper,
• 8:39
Speaker 1: and used up half of the corn pone stock they
• 8:42
Speaker 1: had brought. It seemed glorious sport to be feasting in
• 8:45
Speaker 1: that wild freeway, in the virgin forest of an unexplored
• 8:48
Speaker 1: and uninhabited island, far from the haunts of men, and
• 8:51
Speaker 1: they said they never would return to civilization. The climbing
• 8:55
Speaker 1: fire lit up their faces and threw its ruddy glare
• 8:58
Speaker 1: upon the pillared tree trunks, their forest temple, and upon
• 9:01
Speaker 1: the varnished foliage and festooning vines. When the last crisp
• 9:06
Speaker 1: slice of bacon was gone and the last allowance of
• 9:09
Speaker 1: corn pone devoured, the boys stretched themselves out in the grass,
• 9:13
Speaker 1: filled with contentment. They could have found a cooler place,
• 9:17
Speaker 1: but they would not deny themselves such a romantic feature
• 9:19
Speaker 1: as the roasting campfire. Ain't it gay, said Joe? It's nuts,
• 9:25
Speaker 1: said Tom. What would the boys say if they could
• 9:27
Speaker 1: see us? Say? Well, they'd just die to be here. Hey, Huckey,
• 9:32
  Speaker 1: I reckon, so said Huckleberry. Anyways, I'm suited. I don't
• 9:36
Speaker 1: want nothing better than this. I don't ever get enough
• 9:39
Speaker 1: to eat generally, and here they can't come and pick
• 9:41
Speaker 1: at a feller and bully rag him. So it's just
• 9:44
Speaker 1: the life for me, said Tom. You don't have to
• 9:47
Speaker 1: get up mornings, and you don't have to go to
• 9:49
Speaker 1: school and wash and all that. Blame foolishness. You see,
• 9:52
Speaker 1: a pirate don't have to do anything, Joe when he's ashore,
• 9:55
Speaker 1: but a hermit, he has to be a praying, considerable
• 9:59
Speaker 1: an an. Then he don't have any fun anyway, all
• 10:01
Speaker 1: by himself that way. Oh, yes, that's so, said Joe.
• 10:05
Speaker 1: But I hadn't thought much about it. You know, I
• 10:07
Speaker 1: had a good deal rather be a pirate, now that
• 10:09
Speaker 1: I've tried it, you see, he said, Tom. People don't
• 10:12
Speaker 1: go much on hermits nowadays like they used to in
• 10:15
Speaker 1: the old times. But a pirate's always respected. And a
• 10:19
Speaker 1: hermit's got to sleep on the hardest place he can find,
• 10:21
Speaker 1: and put sackcloth and ashes on his head, and stand
• 10:24
Speaker 1: out in the rain. And what does he put sackcloth
• 10:27
Speaker 1: and ashes on his head for? Inquired Huck, I don't know,
• 10:31
Speaker 1: but they's got to do it. Hermit's always due. You'd
• 10:34
Speaker 1: have to do that if you was a hermit turned
• 10:36
Speaker 1: if I would, said, Huck, well, what would you do?
• 10:40
  Speaker 1: I don't know, but I wouldn't do that. Why, Huck,
• 10:43
Speaker 1: you'd have to how'd you get around it? Why? I
• 10:47
Speaker 1: just wouldn't stand it. I'd run away, run away. Well,
• 10:51
Speaker 1: you would be a nice old slouch of a hermit.
• 10:54
Speaker 1: You'd be a disgrace. The red handed made no response,
• 10:58
Speaker 1: Being better employed. He had finished gouging out a cob,
• 11:01
Speaker 1: and now he fitted a weed stem to it, loaded
• 11:04
Speaker 1: it with tobacco, and was pressing a coal to the
• 11:06
Speaker 1: charge and blowing a cloud of fragrant smoke. He was
• 11:09
Speaker 1: in the full bloom of luxurious contentment. The other pirates
• 11:13
Speaker 1: envied him this majestic vice and secretly resolved to acquire it.
• 11:17
Speaker 1: Shortly presently, Huck said, what does pirates have to do?
• 11:22
Speaker 1: Tom said, Oh, they have just a bully time. Take
• 11:25
Speaker 1: ships and burn them and get the money and buried
• 11:28
Speaker 1: in awful places in their island where there's ghosts and
• 11:30
Speaker 1: things to watch it, and kill everybody in the ships
• 11:33
Speaker 1: and make em walk a plank. And they carry the
• 11:36
Speaker 1: women to the island, said Joe. They don't kill the women, No,
• 11:40
Speaker 1: assented Tom. They don't kill the women. They're too noble.
• 11:44
Speaker 1: And the women's always beautiful too. And don't they wear
• 11:47
Speaker 1: the bulliest clothes? Oh? No, all gold and silver and diamonds,
• 11:51
Speaker 1: said Joe with enthusiasm, who said, Chuck, why the pirates?
• 11:56
Speaker 1: Huck scanned his own clothing forlornly. I reckon, I they
• 12:00
Speaker 1: ain't dressed fittin for a pirate, said he, with a
• 12:02
Speaker 1: regretful pathos in his voice. But I ain't got none
• 12:05
Speaker 1: but these. But the other boys told him the fine
• 12:08
Speaker 1: clothes would come fast enough after they should have begun
• 12:11
Speaker 1: their adventures. They made him understand that his poor rags
• 12:14
Speaker 1: would do to begin with, though it was customary for
• 12:17
Speaker 1: wealthy pirates to start with a proper wardrobe. Gradually their
• 12:21
Speaker 1: talk died out, and drowsiness began to steal upon the
• 12:24
Speaker 1: eyelids of the little waifs. The pipe dropped from the
• 12:27
Speaker 1: fingers of the red handed, and he slept the sleep
• 12:29
Speaker 1: of the conscience free and the weary. The terror of
• 12:32
Speaker 1: the seas, and the black avenger of the Spanish main
• 12:34
Speaker 1: had more difficulty in getting to sleep. They said their
• 12:37
Speaker 1: prayers inwardly and lying down, since there was nobody there
• 12:41
Speaker 1: with authority to make them kneel and recite aloud. In truth,
• 12:44
Speaker 1: they had a mind not to say them at all,
• 12:46
Speaker 1: but they were afraid to proceed to such links at
• 12:49
Speaker 1: that lest they might call down a sudden and special
• 12:52
Speaker 1: thunderbolt from heaven. Then at once they reached and hovered
• 12:56
Speaker 1: upon the imminent verge of sleep. But an intruder came
• 13:00
Speaker 1: now that would not down. It was conscience. They began
• 13:05
Speaker 1: to feel a vague fear that they had been doing
• 13:07
Speaker 1: wrong to run away, and next they thought of the
• 13:10
Speaker 1: stolen meat, and then the real torture came. They tried
• 13:14
Speaker 1: to argue it away by reminding conscience that they had
• 13:17
Speaker 1: purloined sweetmeats and apple scores of times, but conscience was
• 13:21
Speaker 1: not to be appeased by such thin plausibilities. It seemed
• 13:24
Speaker 1: to them in the end that there was no getting
• 13:26
Speaker 1: around the stubborn fact that taking sweetmeats was only hooking,
• 13:30
Speaker 1: while taking bacon and hams and such valuables was plain
• 13:33
Speaker 1: simple stealing, and there was a command against that in
• 13:38
Speaker 1: the Bible. So they inwardly resolved that so long as
• 13:41
Speaker 1: they remained in the business their pirateshes should not again
• 13:44
Speaker 1: be sullied with a crime of stealing. Then conscience granted
• 13:49
Speaker 1: a truce, and these curiously inconsistent pirates fell peacefully to sleep.
• 13:55
Speaker 1: End of Chapter thirteen. Chapter fourteen, Happy Camp of the Freebooters.
• 14:01
Speaker 1: When Tom awoke in the morning, he wondered where he was.
• 14:04
Speaker 1: He sat up and rubbed his eyes and looked around.
• 14:07
Speaker 1: Then he comprehended it was the cool, gray dawn, and
• 14:10
Speaker 1: there was a delicious sense of repose and peace, and
• 14:13
Speaker 1: the deep, pervading calm and silence of the woods. Not
• 14:16
Speaker 1: a leaf stirred, not a sound obtruded upon great nature's meditation.
• 14:21
Speaker 1: Beaded dewdrops stood upon the leaves and grasses. A white
• 14:25
Speaker 1: layer of ashes covered the fire, and a thin blue
• 14:28
Speaker 1: breath of smoke rose straight into the air. Joe and
• 14:31
Speaker 1: Huck still slept, now far away in the woods. A
• 14:35
Speaker 1: bird called another answered. Presently the hammering of a whitpecker
• 14:39
Speaker 1: was heard. Gradually, the cool, dim gray of the morning whitened,
• 14:43
Speaker 1: and as gradually, sounds multiplied and life manifested itself. The
• 14:48
Speaker 1: marvel of nature, shaking off sleep and going to work,
• 14:51
Speaker 1: unfolded itself to the musing boy. A little green worm
• 14:54
Speaker 1: came crawling over a dewy leaf, lifting two thirds of
• 14:58
Speaker 1: his body into the air, from time to time in
• 15:00
Speaker 1: and sniffing around, then proceeding again. For he was measuring,
• 15:04
Speaker 1: Tom said, And when the worm approached him of its
• 15:07
Speaker 1: own accord, he sat as still as a stone, with
• 15:10
Speaker 1: his hopes rising and falling by turns, as the creature
• 15:13
Speaker 1: still came toward him, or seemed inclined to go elsewhere,
• 15:17
Speaker 1: And when at last it considered a painful moment, with
• 15:20
Speaker 1: its curved body in the air, and then came decisively
• 15:23
Speaker 1: down upon Tom's leg and began journeying over him. His
• 15:27
Speaker 1: whole heart was glad, for that meant that he was
• 15:30
Speaker 1: going to have a new suit of clothes, without the
• 15:32
Speaker 1: shadow of a doubt, a gaudy, piratical uniform. Now a
• 15:37
Speaker 1: procession of ants appeared from nowhere in particular, and went
• 15:40
Speaker 1: about their labors. One struggled manfully by with a dead
• 15:44
Speaker 1: spider five times as big as itself in its arms,
• 15:47
Speaker 1: and lugged it straight up a tree trunk. A brown
• 15:50
Speaker 1: spotted lady bug climbed the dizzy height of a grass blade,
• 15:54
Speaker 1: and Tom bent down close to it and said, lady bug,
• 15:57
Speaker 1: lady bug, fly away home her houses on fireyar children's alone,
• 16:02
Speaker 1: And she took wing and went off to see about it,
• 16:05
Speaker 1: which did not surprise the boy, for he knew of
• 16:07
Speaker 1: old that this insect was credulous about conflagrations, and he
• 16:12
Speaker 1: had practiced upon its simplicity more than once. A tumble
• 16:15
Speaker 1: bug came next, heaving sturdily at its ball, and Tom
• 16:19
Speaker 1: touched the creature to see it shut its legs against
• 16:22
Speaker 1: its body and pretend to be dead. The birds were
• 16:25
Speaker 1: fairly rioting by this time. A cat bird, the northern mocker,
• 16:29
Speaker 1: lit in a tree over Tom's head and trilled out
• 16:32
Speaker 1: her imitations of her neighbors in a rapture of enjoyment.
• 16:36
Speaker 1: Then a shrill jay swept down a flash of blue flame,
• 16:40
Speaker 1: and stopped on a twig almost within the boy's reach.
• 16:42
Speaker 1: Cocked his head to one side and eyed the strangers
• 16:45
Speaker 1: with a consuming curiosity. A gray squirrel and a big
• 16:48
Speaker 1: fellow of the fox kind came scurrying along, sitting up
• 16:52
Speaker 1: at intervals to inspect and chatter at the boys. For
• 16:55
Speaker 1: the wild things had probably never seen a human being before,
• 16:58
Speaker 1: and scarcely knew whether to be afraid or not. All
• 17:02
Speaker 1: nature was wide awake and stirring. Now, long lances of
• 17:05
Speaker 1: sunlight pierced down through the dense foliage, far and near,
• 17:09
Speaker 1: and a few butterflies came fluttering upon the scene. Tom
• 17:13
Speaker 1: stirred up the other pirates, and they all clattered away
• 17:16
Speaker 1: with a shout, and in a minute or two were
• 17:18
Speaker 1: stripped and chasing after and tumbling over each other in
• 17:21
Speaker 1: the shallow, limpid water of the white sand bar. They
• 17:24
Speaker 1: felt no longing for the little village sleeping in the
• 17:27
Speaker 1: distance beyond the majestic waste of water. A vagrant current
• 17:31
Speaker 1: or a slight rise in the river had carried off
• 17:33
Speaker 1: their raft, but this only gratified them, since its going
• 17:37
Speaker 1: was something like burning the bridge between them and civilization.
• 17:41
Speaker 1: They came back to camp wonderfully refreshed, glad hearted, and ravenous,
• 17:46
Speaker 1: and they soon had the camp fire blazing up again.
• 17:50
Speaker 1: Huck found a spring of clear, cold water close by,
• 17:53
Speaker 1: and the boys made cups of broad oak or hickory leaves,
• 17:56
Speaker 1: and felt that water sweetened with such wild wood harm
• 18:00
Speaker 1: as that would be a good enough substitute for coffee.
• 18:04
Speaker 1: While Joe was slicing bacon for breakfast, Tom and Huck
• 18:07
Speaker 1: asked him to hold on a minute. They stepped to
• 18:10
Speaker 1: a promising nook in the river bank and threw in
• 18:12
Speaker 1: their lines. Almost immediately they had reward. Joe had not
• 18:16
Speaker 1: had time to get impatient before they were back again
• 18:19
Speaker 1: with some handsome bass, a couple of sun perch, and
• 18:22
Speaker 1: a small catfish, provisions enough for quite a family. They
• 18:26
Speaker 1: fry the fish with a bacon and were astonished, for
• 18:30
Speaker 1: no fish had ever seemed so delicious before. They did
• 18:33
Speaker 1: not know that the quicker a fresh water fish is
• 18:36
Speaker 1: on the fire after it is caught the better he is,
• 18:38
Speaker 1: and they reflected little upon what a sauce, open air, sleeping,
• 18:43
Speaker 1: open air exercise, bathing, and a large ingredient of hunger
• 18:46
Speaker 1: makes too. They lay around in the shade after breakfast
• 18:50
Speaker 1: while Huck had a smoke, and then went off through
• 18:53
Speaker 1: the woods on an exploring expedition. They tramped gayly along
• 18:57
Speaker 1: over decaying logs, through tangled underbrush, among solemn monarchs of
• 19:01
Speaker 1: the forest hung from their crowns to the ground with
• 19:05
Speaker 1: a drooping regalia of grape vines. Now and then they
• 19:09
Speaker 1: came upon snug nooks carpeted with grass and jeweled with flowers.
• 19:13
Speaker 1: They found plenty of things to be delighted with, but
• 19:16
Speaker 1: nothing to be astonished at. They discovered that the island
• 19:19
Speaker 1: was about three miles long and a quarter of a
• 19:22
Speaker 1: mile wide, and that the shore it lay it closest
• 19:24
Speaker 1: to was only separated from it by a narrow channel
• 19:27
Speaker 1: hardly two hundred yards wide. They took a swim about
• 19:31
Speaker 1: every hour, so it was close upon the middle of
• 19:33
Speaker 1: the afternoon when they got back to the camp. They
• 19:36
Speaker 1: were too hungry to stop to fish, but they fared
• 19:38
Speaker 1: sumptuously upon cold ham and then threw themselves down in
• 19:42
Speaker 1: the shade to talk. But the talk soon began to
• 19:45
Speaker 1: drag and then died. The stillness, the solemnity that brooded
• 19:49
Speaker 1: in the woods, and the sense of loneliness began to
• 19:52
Speaker 1: tell upon the spirits of the boys. They fell to thinking.
• 19:56
Speaker 1: A sort of undefined longing crept upon them. This took
• 20:00
Speaker 1: dim shape. Presently it was budding home sickness. Even Finn
• 20:05
Speaker 1: the red handed was dreaming of his door steps and
• 20:08
Speaker 1: empty hogsheads. But they were all ashamed of their weakness,
• 20:12
Speaker 1: and none was brave enough to speak his thought. For
• 20:15
Speaker 1: some time now the boys had been dully conscious of
• 20:18
Speaker 1: a particular sound in the distance, just as one sometimes
• 20:22
Speaker 1: is of the ticking of a clock, which he takes
• 20:24
Speaker 1: no distinct note of. But now this mysterious sound became
• 20:27
Speaker 1: more pronounced and forced a recognition. The boys started glanced
• 20:32
Speaker 1: at each other, and then each assumed a listening attitude.
• 20:36
Speaker 1: There was a long silence, profound and unbroken, and then
• 20:39
Speaker 1: a deep, sullen boom came floating down out of the distance.
• 20:44
Speaker 1: What is it? Exclaimed Joe under his breath, I wonder,
• 20:47
Speaker 1: said Tom in a whisper Tain't thunder, said Uncle Berry
• 20:51
Speaker 1: in an awed tone 'cause thunder, hack, said Tom, listen,
• 20:54
Speaker 1: don't talk. They waited a time that seemed an age,
• 20:58
Speaker 1: and then the same muffle boom troubled the solemn hush,
• 21:02
Speaker 1: let's go and see. They sprang to their feet and
• 21:05
Speaker 1: hurried to the shore toward the town. They parted the
• 21:07
Speaker 1: bushes on the bank and peered out over the water.
• 21:10
Speaker 1: The little steam ferryboat was about a mile below the village,
• 21:13
Speaker 1: drifting with the current. Her broad deck seemed crowded with people.
• 21:18
Speaker 1: There was a great many skiffs rowing about or floating
• 21:21
Speaker 1: with a stream in the neighborhood of the ferryboat, but
• 21:24
Speaker 1: the boys could not determine what the men in them
• 21:27
Speaker 1: were doing. Presently, a great jet of white smoke burst
• 21:30
Speaker 1: from the ferryboat's side, and as it expanded and rose
• 21:34
Speaker 1: in a lazy cloud, that same dull throb of sound
• 21:37
Speaker 1: was borne to the listeners again. I know now, exclaimed Tom.
• 21:42
Speaker 1: Somebody's drownded. That's it, said Huck. They'd done that last
• 21:46
Speaker 1: summer when Bill Turnip got drounded. They shoot a cannon
• 21:49
Speaker 1: over the water, and that makes him come up to
• 21:52
Speaker 1: the top. Yes, And they'd take loads of bread and
• 21:55
Speaker 1: put quicksilver in them and set them afloat, and wherever
• 21:58
Speaker 1: there's anybody that's droned out, they'll float right there and stop. Yes,
• 22:03
Speaker 1: I've heard about that, said Joe. I wonder what makes
• 22:05
Speaker 1: the bread do that? Oh, it ain't the bread so much,
• 22:08
Speaker 1: said Tom. I reckon, it's mostly what they say over
• 22:11
Speaker 1: it before they started out. But they don't say anything
• 22:14
Speaker 1: over it, said Huck. I've seen him and they don't.
• 22:17
Speaker 1: Well that's funny, said Tom. But maybe they say it
• 22:20
Speaker 1: to themselves. Of course they do. Anybody might know that.
• 22:23
Speaker 1: The other boys agreed that there was reason in what
• 22:26
Speaker 1: Tom said, because an ignorant lump of bread uninstructed by
• 22:29
Speaker 1: an incantation could not be expected to act very intelligently
• 22:33
Speaker 1: when sent upon an errand of such gravity by Jings.
• 22:36
Speaker 1: I wish I was over there now, said Joe. I
• 22:39
Speaker 1: do too, said Huck. I'd give heaps to know who
• 22:41
Speaker 1: it is. The boys still listened and watched. Presently, a
• 22:45
Speaker 1: revealing thought flashed through Tom's mind, and he exclaimed, boys,
• 22:50
Speaker 1: I know who's drownded. It's us. They felt like heroes
• 22:55
Speaker 1: in an instant. Here was a gorgeous triumph. They were missed.
• 23:00
Speaker 1: They were mourned. Hearts were breaking on their account. Tears
• 23:04
Speaker 1: were being shed accusing memories of unkindness to these poor
• 23:08
Speaker 1: lost lads were rising up, and unavailing regrets and remorse
• 23:11
Speaker 1: were being indulged. And best of all, the departed were
• 23:14
Speaker 1: the talk of the whole town and the envy of
• 23:17
Speaker 1: all the boys. As far as this dazzling notoriety was concerned,
• 23:21
Speaker 1: this was fine. It was worth while to be a
• 23:24
Speaker 1: pirate after all. As twilight drew on, the ferry boat
• 23:28
Speaker 1: went back to her accustomed business and the skiffs disappeared.
• 23:32
Speaker 1: The pirates returned to camp. They were jubilant with vanity
• 23:35
Speaker 1: over their new grandeur and the illustrious trouble they were making.
• 23:40
Speaker 1: They caught fish, cooked supper, and ate it, and then
• 23:42
Speaker 1: fell to guessing at what the village was thinking and
• 23:45
Speaker 1: saying about them. And the pictures they drew of the
• 23:47
Speaker 1: public distress on their account, were gratifying to look upon
• 23:51
Speaker 1: from their point of view. But when the shadows of
• 23:53
Speaker 1: night closed them in, they gradually ceased to talk and
• 23:56
Speaker 1: sat gazing into the fire, with their minds evidently wandering elsewhere.
• 24:01
Speaker 1: The excitement was gone now, and Tom and Joe could
• 24:04
Speaker 1: not keep back thoughts of certain persons at home who
• 24:07
Speaker 1: were not enjoying this fine frolic as much as they were.
• 24:11
Speaker 1: Misgivings came, they grew troubled and unhappy. A sigh or
• 24:16
Speaker 1: two escaped unawares by and by Joe timidly ventured upon
• 24:20
Speaker 1: a roundabout feeler as to how the others might look
• 24:23
Speaker 1: upon a return to civilization not right now, but Tom
• 24:28
Speaker 1: withered him with derision. Huck, being uncommitted as yet, joined
• 24:31
Speaker 1: in with Tom and the waverer quickly explained and was
• 24:35
Speaker 1: glad to get out of the scrape. With a little
• 24:37
Speaker 1: taint of chicken hearted homesickness, Clinging to his garments as
• 24:40
Speaker 1: he could, Mutiny was effectually laid to rest for the moment.
• 24:45
Speaker 1: As the night deepened, Huck began to nod and presently
• 24:48
Speaker 1: to snore. Joe followed next. Tom lay upon his elbow
• 24:52
Speaker 1: motionless for some time, watching the two intently. At last
• 24:56
Speaker 1: he got up cautiously on his knees and went searching
• 24:58
Speaker 1: among the grass and the flickering reflections flung by the campfire.
• 25:02
Speaker 1: He picked up and inspected several large semi cylinders of
• 25:06
Speaker 1: the thin white bark of a sycamore, and finally chose
• 25:09
Speaker 1: two which seemed to suit him. Then he knelt by
• 25:12
Speaker 1: the fire and painfully wrote something upon each of these
• 25:15
Speaker 1: with his red keel. One he rolled up and put
• 25:18
Speaker 1: in his jacket pocket, and the other he put in
• 25:20
Speaker 1: Joe's hat and removed it to a little distance from
• 25:23
Speaker 1: the owner. And he also put into the hat certain
• 25:26
Speaker 1: schoolboy treasures of almost inestimable value, among them a lump
• 25:30
Speaker 1: of chalk, an India rubber ball, three fish hooks, and
• 25:34
Speaker 1: one of that kind of marbles known as the sure
• 25:37
Speaker 1: Enough crystal. Then he tiptoed his way cautiously among the
• 25:40
Speaker 1: trees till he felt that he was out of hearing,
• 25:43
Speaker 1: and straightway broke into a keen run in the direction
• 25:46
Speaker 1: of the sand bar. End of Chapter fourteen. Chapter fifteen
• 25:52
Speaker 1: Tom's stealthy visit home. A few minutes later, Tom was
• 25:56
Speaker 1: in the shoal water of the bar, wading toward the
• 25:59
Speaker 1: Illinois shore. Before the depth reached his middle, he was
• 26:03
Speaker 1: half way over. The current would permit no more waiting now,
• 26:06
Speaker 1: so he struck out confidently to swim the remaining hundred yards.
• 26:10
Speaker 1: He swam quartering up stream, but still was swept downwards
• 26:14
Speaker 1: rather faster than he had expected. However, he reached the
• 26:17
Speaker 1: shore finally and drifted along till he found a low
• 26:20
Speaker 1: place and drew himself out. He put his hand on
• 26:22
Speaker 1: his jacket pocket, found his piece of bark safe, and
• 26:25
Speaker 1: then struck through the woods, following the shore with streaming garments.
• 26:30
Speaker 1: Shortly before ten o'clock he came out into an open
• 26:32
Speaker 1: place opposite the village and saw the ferry boat lying
• 26:35
Speaker 1: in the shadow of the trees and the high bank.
• 26:38
Speaker 1: Everything was quiet under the blinking stars. He crept down
• 26:42
Speaker 1: the bank, watching with all his eyes, slipped into the water,
• 26:45
Speaker 1: swam three or four strokes, and climbed into the skiff.
• 26:48
Speaker 1: That did you all duty. At the boat's stern, he
• 26:51
Speaker 1: laid himself down under the thwarps and waited, panting. Presently,
• 26:55
Speaker 1: the cracked bell tapped and a voice gave the order
• 26:58
Speaker 1: to cast off. A minute or two later, the skiff's
• 27:01
Speaker 1: head was standing high up against the boat's swell, and
• 27:05
Speaker 1: the voyage was begun. Tom felt happy in his success,
• 27:08
Speaker 1: for he knew it was the boat's last trip for
• 27:11
Speaker 1: the night. At the end of a long twelve or
• 27:13
Speaker 1: fifteen minutes, the wheel stopped and Tom slipped overboard and
• 27:16
Speaker 1: swam ashore in the dusk, landing fifty yards down stream.
• 27:20
Speaker 1: Out of danger of possible stragglers, he flew along unfrequented
• 27:24
Speaker 1: alleys and shortly found himself at his aunt's back fence.
• 27:27
Speaker 1: He climbed over, approached the l and looked in at
• 27:30
Speaker 1: the sitting room window, for a light was burning. There.
• 27:34
Speaker 1: There sat Aunt Polly, sid Mary, and Joe Harper's mother,
• 27:38
Speaker 1: grouped together talking. They were by the bed, and the
• 27:41
Speaker 1: bed was between them and the door. Tom went to
• 27:44
Speaker 1: the door and began to softly lift the latch. Then
• 27:47
Speaker 1: he pressed gently, and the door yielded a crack. He
• 27:50
Speaker 1: continued pushing cautiously and quaking every time it creaked, till
• 27:54
Speaker 1: he judged he might squeeze through on his knees. So
• 27:57
Speaker 1: he put his head through and began warily. What makes
• 28:01
Speaker 1: the candles blow? So said Aunt Polly. Tom hurried up,
• 28:05
Speaker 1: Why that door's open? I believe why? Of course, it
• 28:08
Speaker 1: is no end of strange things. Now go along and
• 28:11
Speaker 1: shut it. Sid Tom disappeared under the bed just in time.
• 28:15
Speaker 1: He lay and breathed himself for a while, then crept
• 28:18
Speaker 1: to where he could almost touch his aunt's foot. But
• 28:21
Speaker 1: as I was saying, said Aunt Polly, he warn't bad,
• 28:24
Speaker 1: so to say, only mischievous, only just giddy and harum scarum.
• 28:29
Speaker 1: You know you warn't any more responsible than a colt.
• 28:33
Speaker 1: He never meant any harm. And he was the best
• 28:35
Speaker 1: hearted boy that ever was. And she began to cry.
• 28:39
Speaker 1: It was just so with my Joe, always full of
• 28:41
Speaker 1: his devilment and up to every kind of mischief. But
• 28:43
Speaker 1: he was just as unselfish and kind as he could be.
• 28:46
Speaker 1: And laws bless me to think. I went and whipped
• 28:49
Speaker 1: him for taking that cream. Never once recollecting that, I
• 28:52
Speaker 1: throwed it out myself because it was sour. And I
• 28:55
Speaker 1: never to see him again in this world, never, never, never,
• 28:59
Speaker 1: poor abused boy. And Missus Harper sobbed as if her
• 29:02
Speaker 1: heart would break. I hope Tom's better off where he is,
• 29:06
Speaker 1: said Syd. But if he'd been better in some ways
• 29:09
Speaker 1: sid Tom felt the glare of the old lady's eye,
• 29:13
Speaker 1: though he could not see it. Not a word against
• 29:15
Speaker 1: my Tom. Now that he's gone, God'll take care of him.
• 29:20
Speaker 1: Never you trouble yourself, sir, oh, missus Harper, I don't
• 29:23
Speaker 1: know how to give him up. I don't know how
• 29:26
Speaker 1: to give him up. He was such a comfort to me,
• 29:29
Speaker 1: although he tormented my old heart out of me. Most
• 29:32
Speaker 1: the Lord giveth and the Lord hath taken away. Blessed
• 29:36
Speaker 1: be the name of the Lord. But it's so hard, Oh,
• 29:39
Speaker 1: it's so hard. Only last Saturday, my Joe busted a
• 29:43
Speaker 1: firecracker right under my nose, and I knocked him sprawling.
• 29:46
Speaker 1: Little did I know then, how soon, Oh, if it
• 29:49
Speaker 1: was to do over again, I'd hug him and bless
• 29:52
Speaker 1: him for it. Yes, yes, yes, I know just how
• 29:56
Speaker 1: you feel, missus Harper, I know just exactly how you feel.
• 30:00
Speaker 1: No longer ago than yesterday noon, my Tom took and
• 30:04
Speaker 1: filled the cat full of pain killer, and I did
• 30:07
Speaker 1: think the creature would tear the house down, And God
• 30:10
Speaker 1: forgive me. I cracked Tom's head with my thimble. Poor boy,
• 30:13
Speaker 1: poor dead boy. But he's out of all his troubles now,
• 30:17
Speaker 1: And the last words I ever heard him say was
• 30:20
Speaker 1: to reproach. But this memory was too much for the
• 30:23
Speaker 1: old lady, and she broke entirely down. Tom was snuffling
• 30:27
Speaker 1: now himself, and more in pity of himself than anybody else.
• 30:31
Speaker 1: He could hear Mary crying and putting in a kindly
• 30:34
Speaker 1: word for him. From time to time he began to
• 30:36
Speaker 1: have a nobler opinion of himself than ever before. Still,
• 30:39
Speaker 1: he was sufficiently touched by his aunt's grief to long
• 30:42
Speaker 1: to rush out from under the bed and overwhelm her
• 30:45
Speaker 1: with joy. And the theatrical gorgeousness of the thing appealed
• 30:48
Speaker 1: strongly to his nature too, But he resisted and lay still.
• 30:53
Speaker 1: He went on listening, and gathered by odds and ends
• 30:55
Speaker 1: that it was conjectured at first that the boys had
• 30:57
Speaker 1: got drowned while taking a swim. Then the small raft
• 31:01
Speaker 1: had been missed. Next, certain boys said the missing lads
• 31:04
Speaker 1: had promised that the village should hear something soon. The
• 31:07
Speaker 1: wise heads had put this and that together and decided
• 31:11
Speaker 1: that the lads had gone off on that raft and
• 31:13
Speaker 1: would turn up at the next town below presently. But
• 31:16
Speaker 1: toward noon the raft had been found lodged against the
• 31:20
Speaker 1: Missouri shore, some five or six miles below the village,
• 31:23
Speaker 1: And then hope perished. They must be drowned, else hunger
• 31:27
Speaker 1: would have driven them home by nightfall, if not sooner.
• 31:30
Speaker 1: It was believed that the search for the bodies had
• 31:32
Speaker 1: been a fruitless effort, merely because the drowning must have
• 31:36
Speaker 1: occurred in mid channel, since the boys, being good swimmers,
• 31:39
Speaker 1: would otherwise have escaped to shore. This was Wednesday night.
• 31:44
Speaker 1: If the bodies continued missing until Sunday, all hope would
• 31:47
Speaker 1: be given over and the funerals would be preached on
• 31:50
Speaker 1: that morning. Tom shuddered, Missus Harper gave a sobbing good night,
• 31:55
Speaker 1: and turned to go. Then, with a mutual impulse, the
• 31:58
Speaker 1: two bereaved women flung themselves into each other's arms and
• 32:01
Speaker 1: had a good consoling cry, and then parted. Aunt Polly
• 32:05
Speaker 1: was tender far beyond her wont in her good night
• 32:09
Speaker 1: to Sid and Mary. Sid snuffled a bit, and Mary
• 32:12
Speaker 1: went off, crying with all her heart. Aunt Polly knelt
• 32:15
Speaker 1: down and prayed for Tom so touchingly, so appealingly, and
• 32:18
Speaker 1: with such measureless love in her words and her old
• 32:21
Speaker 1: trembling voice that he was weltering in tears again long
• 32:25
Speaker 1: before she was through. He had to keep still long
• 32:28
Speaker 1: after she went to bed, for she kept making broken
• 32:31
Speaker 1: hearted ejaculations from time to time, tossing unrestfully and turning over.
• 32:35
Speaker 1: But at last she was still only moaning a little
• 32:38
Speaker 1: in her sleep. Now the boy stole out rose gradually
• 32:41
Speaker 1: from the bedside, shaded the candlelight with his hand, and
• 32:44
Speaker 1: stood regarding her. His heart was full of pity for her.
• 32:48
Speaker 1: He took out his sycamore scroll and placed it by
• 32:51
Speaker 1: the candle. But something occurred to him, and he lingered,
• 32:54
Speaker 1: considering his face lighted. With a happy solution of his thought,
• 32:58
Speaker 1: he put the bark Hastilian's pocket. Then he bent over
• 33:01
Speaker 1: and kissed the faded lips, and straightway made his stealthy exit.
• 33:05
Speaker 1: Latching the door behind him. He threaded his way back
• 33:09
Speaker 1: to the ferry landing, found nobody at large there, and
• 33:12
Speaker 1: walked boldly on board the boat, for he knew she
• 33:15
Speaker 1: was tenantless, except that there was a watchman who always
• 33:18
Speaker 1: turned in and slept like a graven image. He untied
• 33:21
Speaker 1: the skiff at the stern, slipped into it, and was
• 33:24
Speaker 1: soon rowing cautiously up stream. When he had pulled a
• 33:27
Speaker 1: mile above the village, he started quartering across and bent
• 33:31
Speaker 1: himself stoutly to his work. He hit the landing on
• 33:34
Speaker 1: the other side neatly, for this was a familiar bit
• 33:36
Speaker 1: of work for him. He was moved to capture the skiff,
• 33:40
Speaker 1: arguing that it might be considered a ship and therefore
• 33:42
Speaker 1: a legitimate prey for a pirate, but he knew a
• 33:45
Speaker 1: thorough search would be made for it, and that might
• 33:48
Speaker 1: end in revelations. So he stepped ashore and entered the wood.
• 33:52
Speaker 1: He sat down and took a long rest, torturing himself
• 33:55
Speaker 1: meantime to keep awake, and then started warily down the
• 33:59
Speaker 1: home stretch. The night was far spent. It was broad
• 34:02
Speaker 1: daylight before he found himself fairly abreast the island bar.
• 34:06
Speaker 1: He rested again until the sun was well up and
• 34:09
Speaker 1: gilding the great river with its splendor, and then he
• 34:12
Speaker 1: plunged into the stream. A little later, he paused, dripping
• 34:15
Speaker 1: upon the threshold of the camp, and heard Joe say, no,
• 34:19
Speaker 1: Tom's true blue, Huck. He'll come back. He won't desert.
• 34:23
Speaker 1: He knows that would be a disgrace to a pirate.
• 34:25
Speaker 1: And Tom's too proud for that sort of thing. He's
• 34:27
Speaker 1: up to something or other. I wonder what well the
• 34:31
Speaker 1: thing's is ours? Anyway? Ain't they pretty near? But not yet? Huck?
• 34:35
Speaker 1: The writing says they are if he ain't back here
• 34:37
Speaker 1: to breakfast, which he is, exclaimed Tom, with fine dramatic effect,
• 34:43
Speaker 1: stepping grandly into camp. A sumptuous breakfast of bacon and
• 34:47
Speaker 1: fish was shortly provided, and as the boys set to
• 34:50
Speaker 1: work upon it, Tom recounted and adorned his adventures. They
• 34:54
Speaker 1: were a vain and boastful company of heroes. When the
• 34:57
Speaker 1: tale was done, then Tom hid himsel off away in
• 35:00
Speaker 1: a shady nook to sleep till noon, and the other
• 35:03
Speaker 1: pirates got ready to fish and explore. End of Chapter fifteen.
