Transcript
- 0:18Hi, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon.
- 0:20On a Wednesdays, the Iowa Sports Radio Network flagship out of
- 0:25Des Moines sports station one O 6.3 KX&O.
- 0:29For the next couple of hours, Trent Condon, myself, Ken
- 0:32Miller, we'll talk sports with you and we appreciate you
- 0:35starting your afternoon here with us.
- 0:37We'll turn things over at 2:00 off the bench.
- 0:39Come Sean Robertson, Lucas train.
- 0:42They'll take you until 5. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:45program over the next 120 minutes or thereabouts.
- 0:48We will start 1225. Dan Mazatani, St.
- 0:52Paul Pioneer Press tried to get him yesterday.
- 0:53That did not work out, but still only at 48 hours, not even old.
- 0:58We'll take a look back to Monday night and ahead to this weekend.
- 1:02Dane covers the Vikings for the Saint Paul Pioneer Press
- 1:06twincities.com. He'll join us at 12:25.
- 1:09Then the voice of the Chiefs, Mitch Holtis his weekly spots
- 1:13now that we are into the regular season.
- 1:15Mitch will join us at 12:45. Papa John's throughout the state
- 1:18of Iowa sponsored that segment. Hour number two, we'll start by
- 1:23heading to Chicago and catch up with the cap man Centurion Stone
- 1:28of Iowa sponsors. Cappy, Obviously the Bears from
- 1:30this past weekend, they will take on Detroit.
- 1:33We'll get into that. And the Cubs and there was some
- 1:35Cubs news here this morning. We'll get to that here
- 1:37momentarily. Cappy coming up at 1:00.
- 1:40Transplays of the day about 10 minutes or so before too, as we
- 1:44take you up until 2:00. How are you TC?
- 1:48Not too shabby. We're weak coming off Cyhawk
- 1:52week a week ago, and seemingly almost every moment of the shows
- 1:57was all about that for now. Six days, yeah.
- 2:00And now a couple of laughers that, at least on paper, with
- 2:02Iowa hosting UMass and Iowa State and the weird Rd. game
- 2:05down to Jonesboro, AR to take on the Red Wolves.
- 2:07Where by the way, as we were informed, parents going to be
- 2:1098° middle of the afternoon hot. Humid and take a look at that in
- 2:14the South. Might be a lot of cramping
- 2:15happening this weekend in college football across the
- 2:18landscape, but I I want to throw this to you.
- 2:22We know obviously the big storyline with Iowa, the passing
- 2:25game has been a huge issue and if there was never a week to do
- 2:28it, it's this week, right you. Would think.
- 2:31Go out there and and do some domination and Chuck it around.
- 2:35Yes. Throw it around, make some
- 2:36plays, get. Because, after all, UMass was
- 2:39beat by Bryant. Yes, this is the week to open
- 2:42that up and take it a step further for Iowa State.
- 2:46Run game hasn't been good. No, it hasn't.
- 2:48Couldn't, couldn't agree with you.
- 2:49More and the Arkansas Russian defense is brutal.
- 2:51Are they so is this kind of put up or shut up time like if we're
- 2:57going to see at minimum? For who?
- 2:59For Iowa? For both.
- 3:00For both the run game for Iowa State, the passing game of if
- 3:03there's any hope of them becoming average, OK, solid.
- 3:10Whatever adjective that you want to use for both of those
- 3:13components for Iowa and Iowa State, is this the week that it
- 3:16has to be proven that maybe there is hope for both of those
- 3:19units? If it's fair, that's fair.
- 3:21I mean this as you just laid out, I mean Arkansas State, if
- 3:24they can't stop the run, if they struggle like that, I would like
- 3:26to think that a Power Four team would go in there and be able to
- 3:29do some business on the ground. You know, when I look at this
- 3:32Iowa State team, Trent, I, I see obviously, and I agree with you,
- 3:37a running game that's struggling, a receiver game that
- 3:41is struggling. The receivers.
- 3:43Eskelsen's had some big moments, don't get me wrong, but in some
- 3:46respects it kind of mirrors what Iowa has been going through over
- 3:50the last decade or so. And yes, I mean, I I was not at
- 3:55a quarterback over the last, I don't know when, when Nate
- 3:58Stanley graduate hadn't had a quarterback that sets the world
- 4:01on fire. Iowa State has one of them
- 4:03starting on Sundays in the NFL. The other one rock go back is on
- 4:08everybody's radar when it comes to college football.
- 4:10So they've got a guy that can Chuck it around.
- 4:13But what they do have that Iowa had.
- 4:15My point I'm trying to make is Iowa relied so much on the wide
- 4:18receivers over the last decade. Iowa State's two tight ends are,
- 4:27I don't know if elite can you be?
- 4:28I mean, they're really good. They're excellent.
- 4:30They're excellent. Yes, both of them are excellent.
- 4:32So kind of mirrors Iowa's reliance on the tight ends to
- 4:36carry the passing game over the last little while.
- 4:38Mm Hmm. And it worked for Iowa.
- 4:40It did. It worked for Iowa, so maybe,
- 4:43but I'm with you on the offense. They're they're struggling to
- 4:45run the ball. Eskelson is a nice player over
- 4:48BS, two wins consistent. We haven't seen enough at a
- 4:50Townsend yet. We think he's got a little a
- 4:53little wiggle to him and so well is yet to see the field for the
- 4:55most part. Yeah, and had an opportunity for
- 4:58a catch and wasn't able to haul it in in the game against Iowa
- 5:00over the weekend. Another question, obviously
- 5:03Trevor Burr, when Iowa State's going to get him back?
- 5:06Well, did you see Campbell's? At the depth chart, he's listed
- 5:10as a starter. He was listed as a starter.
- 5:12Week 2. Right.
- 5:14And he said he's thinks he's going to play this week.
- 5:16We'll see, we'll see on that front, but if he is going to be
- 5:21an elixir to help this offensive line out, Brendan Black hasn't
- 5:24been good. No, no, that the the offensive
- 5:27line has been, is it been average?
- 5:30Average. And that's good for them.
- 5:32Yes, absolutely. Average early in the season is a
- 5:35win for them because we've heard and seen.
- 5:38Bad with our own two eyes. Early in the season, and yes,
- 5:41it's been OK at this point in time and that's OK, but you want
- 5:45to get better than that because there's going to be that game
- 5:48Rocco doesn't have in the first half.
- 5:50There's an interception. Something happens where you're
- 5:52going to have to rely not just completely in the passing game.
- 5:56And if for the first time and feels like forever, they did
- 5:59swing and miss at sole at the wide receiver position after
- 6:03just year after year after year being able to find these guys.
- 6:07And if for the first time they missed on one of these transfer
- 6:10guys, well, that changes the complexion certainly of this
- 6:13offense and what they're going to have to do.
- 6:14So I want to see it this weekend.
- 6:16Run the ball. Arkansas State is not good
- 6:18against the run. Going to be hot down there.
- 6:20But go out there, play some bully ball.
- 6:23Any concerns with this game? Just the fact that it's four
- 6:27games in a row, again, as we've said many, many times, just the
- 6:32full marks we gave their support staff to getting them back from
- 6:35Dublin and getting them over the hump as quickly as they did.
- 6:38Then they play a rivalry game as they did last week.
- 6:42And then to go on the road to take on Arkansas State, it's a
- 6:48tricky spot. I think look, Iowa State should
- 6:50be able to show up and win. I, I think the program is at
- 6:53that point where they should be able to just show up and win.
- 6:55Even if it's not, even if they're nowhere near their best,
- 6:58they should be good enough to win this football game.
- 7:00They got the they got a really good quarterback.
- 7:02They got two really good tight ends.
- 7:04It's it's time to see the running game take a step and
- 7:06what maybe it's Dylan Lee. You know, I thought maybe Dylan
- 7:09Lee might have more of a more more responsibility in the
- 7:14Cyhawk game because we certainly saw him in mop up duty against
- 7:18South Dakota. He went crazy.
- 7:20He's he was the best of running back.
- 7:21His looked at Iowa State so far this year and I think we're both
- 7:24Carson Hanson fans. He's what he is.
- 7:27He's fine, yes, and Abu Sama has we think he's got that elite
- 7:31speed, but Dylan Lee has been the one that stood out.
- 7:35Now, Flores also listed on that depth chart and I don't think
- 7:39he's going to play this week again.
- 7:42They get a buy in. I mean, in perfect world, he
- 7:44doesn't have to. They get a buy finally next week
- 7:46to lick their wounds a little bit before Arizona comes to
- 7:49calling. And that Arizona?
- 7:50Game. Yeah, I'm telling you, I've
- 7:51always had it as a tricky game. I'm not saying I I would say one
- 7:55win, right. I would say will be favored in
- 7:57the football game. We'll see.
- 7:59Let's get Anthony and then we'll move on to another.
- 8:01Anthony making some news here this morning.
- 8:04How are you, Anthony? Oh, pretty good guys.
- 8:07It's been a while since I've talked to you guys, yeah.
- 8:09Good to hear your voice, Anthony.
- 8:11Oh yeah, going back to the Iowa State game, I'm not too
- 8:16surprised about that. About that game.
- 8:19What the office is struggling and everything.
- 8:22Oh, this is the weekend is going to be start to show some
- 8:26improvement, especially the passing game.
- 8:28We still haven't seen Gradowski to throw the ball down field
- 8:31yet, but is this the weekend to do it as well when we get to the
- 8:35Big 10 season? And the second question is I
- 8:38have for you, excuse me, how this season's going to win.
- 8:44Is this offense is going to struggle as well.
- 8:46Also is this is going to be a six and six or six or seven wins
- 8:51this year or it's going to be like a four or five wins.
- 8:55And what's the injury report on those three Hawkeye players is
- 8:59going to be going to be gone for the rest of the season?
- 9:02Hey, guys, I'll hang up. Listen.
- 9:04Go, Hawks. Anthony, good to hear from you.
- 9:07You're welcome anytime. The injury front, Reese
- 9:09Vanderzee, Kamari Moulton, both those guys not going to play
- 9:12this week. We'll see if they're going to be
- 9:13available for the Friday night affair against Rutgers next
- 9:16week. But both of those guys going to
- 9:18be out. Addison Serenga out for the
- 9:20season with an Achilles injury. Definitely disappointing on that
- 9:23front. And, you know, Anthony brings up
- 9:26this point with the schedule that they still have.
- 9:28And we came into the season talking about the behemoths,
- 9:31Oregon, Penn State coming in, Indiana.
- 9:34Now, they haven't played anybody.
- 9:35Nope. But have they taken a major step
- 9:37back? Don't know.
- 9:38We'll see. They get Illinois next week.
- 9:40Before that one with them coming in, you still got rivalry games
- 9:44against Wisconsin, Minnesota and Nebraska.
- 9:46All three of them are coin flips at best.
- 9:50OK, yeah, Wisconsin's I think really bad.
- 9:53But anyways, I don't disagree. That's fine.
- 9:54I'll I'll take your way. Isn't that thing destined for
- 9:571310? Yeah.
- 9:58Most of them are. Yeah, right.
- 9:59Yeah. So I mean that I think we're
- 10:01going to see the same game that we normally see in that game,
- 10:03and it's going to come down to a play in Camp Randall as they
- 10:06have to go on the road. Then you couple it with you
- 10:08still got to go to USC. Michigan State looks like they
- 10:11can score. They do.
- 10:12Can Iowa keep up? You know, the Indiana game, the
- 10:14Michigan State game, I was not in the spot right now they can
- 10:17win 2724. No, 3128, not from what we've
- 10:21seen. They can't do it.
- 10:23Now the good news is I think this defense, it's not
- 10:26completely repaired, but what they gave up last year, all the
- 10:30deep plays DJ Hall is playing at he's.
- 10:32Playing very well. He, we were wondering and we
- 10:35talked about a ton in the spring because Phil Parker, who doesn't
- 10:38exactly throw at accolades, he talked about he is taking that
- 10:41jump and we've seen this so many times.
- 10:43I always go back. Bradley Fletcher was one of the
- 10:45worst quarterbacks I've ever seen early in his career by a
- 10:48senior. He was excellent and they played
- 10:50in the league for like 7. Years Nick, can I throw another
- 10:52one that was bad in his early career?
- 10:54Riley Moss. There he is.
- 10:55I know you're going to Riley Moss.
- 10:57Lining up on the other side of the field from Patrick Sir Tan.
- 10:59We've seen so many of these examples, guys in their final
- 11:02year, yeah, make the leap. And it appears that DJ Hall's
- 11:05made that. Yeah, I agree with you.
- 11:07Deshaun Lee's been a lot better than I thought he was going.
- 11:09To be so far, yeah, he's been so solid.
- 11:10At minimum. MM hmm, Lutmer's run around
- 11:13making plays like him. Been impressed by Shire.
- 11:16Mm hmm. Harold is OK.
- 11:18At minimum it looks like maybe some of the issues we saw a year
- 11:23ago was just it was so uncharacteristic.
- 11:25I. Agree.
- 11:26So, but let me just let me just throw this little caveat out
- 11:29there because our we just opened the show by saying Iowa State's
- 11:31got subpar receivers. So and and I liked Hall.
- 11:35I thought he was good, but when are they going to go up?
- 11:38Was the their first real test be USC mean?
- 11:42When will they meet a group? Of well, Indiana's got some
- 11:43dudes. Do they Yeah, yeah.
- 11:45And they got a quarterback that can throw Absolutely.
- 11:47So, so well that'll that'll be a good test.
- 11:50But I think, I think the I'm with you.
- 11:54I we think that the secondary for I was better, but let's see
- 11:57when they get a real test. What's more likely, Iowa is not
- 12:01bull eligible? Four or five victories,
- 12:03something like that, or they get to an 8 or 9.
- 12:06Oh, I think it's the former, yeah.
- 12:08I think so too. And and then it just opens up a
- 12:10whole other path for conversation, right?
- 12:13All right, we are the radio show that brought you some great
- 12:17coaching ideas, like who is the Iowa State basketball coach you
- 12:20were going to bring? In flip Saunders.
- 12:21Kid Flip Saunders kid. Yeah, so.
- 12:23T JS worked out. I got something for you.
- 12:26For who for? Parents if parents walks away.
- 12:28And don't you think, let me before you, before you, lay this
- 12:31on. Yeah, there's a whopper.
- 12:33Yeah. That's good, I'm all for it.
- 12:36And don't you think he will? I don't know, I, I just, it's
- 12:40very no. No, I'm saying if it gets to
- 12:42that point, don't. I don't think he'll stay too
- 12:46long if it if he doesn't, if he sees it starting to go the way
- 12:51that his predecessor did and what it did to in some ways his
- 12:56legacy. Right.
- 12:57Right. Would Ferris be cognizant enough
- 13:02to realize, you know what, I'm just going to get off this ride
- 13:05before this ride kicks me off. If it was this year and it plays
- 13:08out in that fashion and I will finish as five and seven, let's
- 13:10just put that example. And that's not.
- 13:12Crazy with the schedule? Absolutely not.
- 13:14They finished five and seven. There's no health worries or
- 13:18anything like that. I don't think so.
- 13:19I think Kirk wouldn't want to leave on that kind of note, that
- 13:23he'd want one more chance at redemption, one more chance at a
- 13:27season. I think we'd see one more.
- 13:30But if there's more things happening, if there's internal
- 13:32thing, yes, I could see that. But just on the surface, it's a
- 13:36normal year. Brakes don't go.
- 13:37They're where all close losses ended losses they go 5:00 and
- 13:417:00. Because the natives are going
- 13:43to. Be Oh, they will be there, there
- 13:44is no doubt. OK, so if they, if he does
- 13:48decide that, you know what, I've had a heck of a ride, it's time
- 13:51to spend more time with the with the grandkids and with Mary.
- 13:56I'm going to, I'm it's time for a change.
- 13:58And I think hockey fans would like that.
- 14:00There's a, there is, There's a you.
- 14:02Know, and I get it, I totally understand it because if you if
- 14:06you don't, you have to evolve or you're going to get left behind
- 14:10and in some ways it looks like kind of was kind of being left
- 14:13behind. So if he does leave, the floor
- 14:16is yours. All right, so every Monday and
- 14:20Friday we talk to a certain somebody based out of Alabama.
- 14:23OK, Yeah. As we know, the Natos are very
- 14:26restless in Alabama. In Tuscaloosa, Caitlin de Boer
- 14:31is owed north of $40 million. And as we're finding out now, I
- 14:35think. It's more than that.
- 14:36As we're finding out right now, Alabama, in this structure of
- 14:41college athletics doesn't have the same money.
- 14:43The Georgia's and the Texas and the Ohio States and the
- 14:46Michigan's of the world. I don't know if they have that
- 14:48buyout, but what if there is a golden parachute?
- 14:52Caitlin de Boer gets to come back to his roots, come back to
- 14:54the upper Midwest, to South Dakota.
- 14:56Guy got to start at Sioux Falls. What if there is that
- 15:00opportunity knowing he's put up or shut up next year or Alabama?
- 15:04And if it doesn't happen and they disappoint this year and go
- 15:068:00 and 4:00 again, what if, just what if you make that phone
- 15:11call and see if it didn't work? He has no connections to the
- 15:15South. No, and you never want to be the
- 15:17guy to follow. Absolutely.
- 15:18You're following Nick Saban. Give a golden parachute.
- 15:21Here it is. You get to take a job that you
- 15:24obviously are familiar with that has had two coaches in 46 years.
- 15:29Here's your opportunity. Kaylin de Boer, come back to the
- 15:33Upper Midwest. Crazy.
- 15:35Well, not as crazy as Flip Saunders kid taking Irish state.
- 15:38But no, I mean, yeah, you would have to be on the list, you
- 15:44would think, because it doesn't seem like it's going well in
- 15:46Alabama. And I I do like his.
- 15:50I mean, he's he'd have some new ideas, some new blood.
- 15:54And again, I don't think either neither one of us wants to see
- 15:58it end badly for ferrets. But, but most of the time,
- 16:02Trent, it ends badly, right? And this is get this right.
- 16:07I'm not saying Kirk's walking away.
- 16:09No, that that's not what this is.
- 16:11People take these little snippets and and they take it
- 16:13and they run to the message boards and social media and they
- 16:15make it out something that it. And there was no plane that left
- 16:18Iowa City for Tuscaloosa. We're we're not tracking
- 16:20airplanes. No, not yet.
- 16:22Not yet. That could come November,
- 16:24December. But that aside, just a 12 file
- 16:28to the back of your mind if things don't go very well in.
- 16:30Tuscal or or next year, you know that, yes, you had this last
- 16:34year type of thing. Get in front of it, right?
- 16:37Get in front of it. Well, we shall see.
- 16:38All right, the other Anthony news we want to get to and it's
- 16:41it's been out there for a while, but Anthony Rizzo is going to
- 16:44retire this weekend as a Chicago Cub.
- 16:47Now the game retired him. To be fair, he did not get an
- 16:50opportunity. He's still making $6 million, I
- 16:52think this year as some members of the Yankees, not to play for
- 16:55them. I was kind of surprised that no
- 16:57one picked him up and gave him an opportunity.
- 17:00I would thought he would have looked really good at Fenway
- 17:03Park with that short right field, the Penske pole out there
- 17:06that. But he never got his opportunity
- 17:08to play another year. But what a career, right?
- 17:11I mean, he's always going to. At least I think it's the face
- 17:16of the 2016 World Series champion Chicago Cubs.
- 17:19I think you're right because Chris Bryant's career has not
- 17:21gone how anybody could have. Invented.
- 17:23And Kyle Schwarber at the time was not Kyle Schwarber, who hit
- 17:26his 50th last night. How about that?
- 17:27He was a young guy that we knew had power.
- 17:30Could he be a catcher? Well, don't forget how he
- 17:32started. He got hurt and was a Game 2 or
- 17:34game one out in Arizona. He blew out his knee, right?
- 17:38And he only got back for the playoffs.
- 17:39But he was the face of that team.
- 17:43He was the face of that team. You know who I mean, I, I know
- 17:46that. Hayward gets credit for the rain
- 17:49delay in the speech inside the clubhouse that turned them
- 17:52around. I pulled up the box score from
- 17:55game seven of the 2016 World Series.
- 18:00OK. How many can you name the
- 18:02starting? Can you go around the diamond or
- 18:04go around the position by position for the Cubs?
- 18:09Javi, I think you would get the infield, Rizzo.
- 18:13Javi. Bryant.
- 18:17Yep. Addison Russell.
- 18:18Yep. Do you remember what Addison
- 18:19Russell did in that year? They needed 40 and 100.
- 18:22Is that what it was? It's.
- 18:23Something crazy like I I know he drove in 100 runs or 90
- 18:28something runs. I think he did just something
- 18:31that he never good would have got close to again.
- 18:34What a fall from grace. Right.
- 18:37But brought on by himself, to be fair.
- 18:39I mean, that's domestic abuse. Schwarber.
- 18:42Schwarber, Fowler. See, I would have missed that
- 18:46one, but you're right. And.
- 18:48The Swiss Army knife played played a lot of places.
- 18:52A lot of places. Think his wife might have?
- 18:54Suddenly had them. In one of the.
- 18:56Games. I can't think of his name.
- 18:57Ben. Zobrist.
- 18:58He was here last week or two weeks ago at Principal Park and
- 19:01wife. Wife cheated on him, yeah.
- 19:02She did. There was.
- 19:03Something weird there. And then Rossi behind the plate.
- 19:05And Rossi behind the plate. Yeah, and Contreras too.
- 19:08I was he. Split in time maybe?
- 19:11I think they were split in time, Kyle.
- 19:13Kyle Hendricks started game seven.
- 19:14He was followed by John Lester. OK Chapman pitched in that game
- 19:22and then I did not remember this.
- 19:23Who was who was on the mound for the final out.
- 19:25The ball was hit to Chris Bryant, who had a big smile on
- 19:28his face as he looked at Anthony Rizzo and chucked it over.
- 19:30And the celebration was on. Mike Montgomery.
- 19:35Remember the lefty? You could have given me a
- 19:36billion dollars. And you could have given me the
- 19:38same way. I didn't know that Carlos
- 19:40Santana was on that team. Are they Indians?
- 19:43Napoli, Ramirez, Raja Davis had a big hit in that game.
- 19:48Jan Gomes was on that team behind the plate.
- 19:50Kluber pitched, you know, the final pitcher in the game for
- 19:53the at the time, Indians was. Hernandez.
- 19:56No, he's been kind of kicked out of baseball.
- 20:01Oh, Trevor Bauer, Trevor Power. I was thinking when he cut his
- 20:04hand on the the fly thing before the playoffs start.
- 20:07Remember that? No Bauer did that.
- 20:10Yes, on the fly thing. The the the fan.
- 20:14No. Well, the thing that flies in
- 20:16the air, I can't think of what it's called.
- 20:17The the drone. Yes, I think that was Trevor
- 20:22Bauer. Yeah, unbelievable.
- 20:24But Rizzo is calling it a year. I'm calling it a call it a
- 20:29career and calling it a year. And they'll honor him.
- 20:31Yeah, 2016 missed a playoff start.
- 20:34I had that. Give me Addison Russell's
- 20:37numbers. Addison Russell, I think he had
- 20:3940 and 100. I don't know why I think that.
- 20:42I know he drove in a lot. 40 seems like a lot for him.
- 20:45Addison Russell Duh, duh. Duh's Career Stats Here we go 2.
- 20:491016 How many RBI? 95.
- 20:51Shoot, I missed it. Only 21 home.
- 20:53Runs. It wasn't close.
- 20:55You're close to 100. Yeah, yeah.
- 20:58We'll take a time out. We'll come back.
- 21:00We will be joined by Dane Mazatani.
- 21:02Mitch Holt is still to come. Miller and Cotton, By the way,
- 21:05Speaking of the Cubs, Kathy will join us at one.
- 21:07It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network flagship on Des Moines
- 21:10sports station One O 6.3 KXNO coming up on 1230.
- 21:17Welcome back Miller and Condon. Iowa Sports Radio network.
- 21:21The voice radio voice of the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 21:23Mitch Holt is coming up in 15 minutes.
- 21:26Before we get to Dane Mazatani, just real quick caller reminded
- 21:30me that Carl Edwards started the final inning. 140 lbs soaking
- 21:34wet he. Request wasn't he probably 6162
- 21:37seemed like had some high to him but boy.
- 21:39Spindly. Yes he was very much so.
- 21:41Got the 1st 2 outs and then Montgomery came in and sealed
- 21:44it. Here's Dane Mazatani spent
- 21:46Monday night Soldier Field in Chicago watching the Vikings
- 21:49come from behind to pick off those Chicago Bears in an NFC
- 21:53North battle. Dame Trenton, Ken, thank you for
- 21:55finding a few minutes for us. Really was a tale of two games.
- 21:58Did you had you started your your game recap or your game
- 22:03story at any point and had to hit delete and re and redo once
- 22:07that fourth quarter came around? Yeah, I can't lie.
- 22:10I had the story written about how JJ McCarthy face plants and
- 22:15his NFL debut in his hometown. But I did have a sneaky
- 22:21suspicion that he wasn't done. And I say that because you
- 22:25talked to enough people about this kid, and they'll talk to
- 22:28you about his moxie, about how he's a gamer, about how he rises
- 22:32to the occasion when the moment really calls for it.
- 22:35So I had an inkling that they keep letting the Vikings hang
- 22:39around. There might be a chance for JJ
- 22:41McCarthy to do something special.
- 22:43And fair enough, that's what happened.
- 22:44And the Bears did not put the Vikings to bed and left that
- 22:48door open, and JJ McCarthy came storming through.
- 22:51And what a day it was, man. Got the right guy as the
- 22:55offensive coordinator slash head coach in KOC defense was
- 22:58outstanding. I mean you get this one that
- 23:00felt for 3/4 like you were dead on arrival and suddenly it just
- 23:04as completely changes the complexion.
- 23:06I I think of this team, what's closer to reality and what we're
- 23:09going to see maybe the rest of just this season, the 1st 3/4 or
- 23:12what we saw in the fourth quarter, knowing it's probably
- 23:15going to be somewhere in between.
- 23:17Yeah, I think the correct answer is probably somewhere in
- 23:19between. I think we'll probably ride that
- 23:21roller coaster throughout the year.
- 23:23But I do think in the aggregate, they'll end up looking a lot
- 23:26more like the team that finished that game than the team that
- 23:29started that game. I think when you look at how
- 23:32that game started, you can almost explain it away in a lot
- 23:37of ways. Nerves.
- 23:39NFL debut 30 minutes from where you grew up, hostile
- 23:42environment. I don't know if I've heard if
- 23:44I've heard soldier feels much louder than it was on Monday
- 23:47night. They were juiced up in there and
- 23:51to do all of those things. And you know, I think Kevin
- 23:55O'Connell was trying to ease McCarthy into it.
- 23:58The struggles made sense from a kind of a macro perspective.
- 24:02But I think as you saw the game kind of wear on, as he loosened
- 24:07up a little bit, as he kind of found his sea legs, you saw what
- 24:10this team could look like. Doesn't mean, look, they're
- 24:13going to score on every possession the rest of the way.
- 24:16Doesn't mean he's not going to look like a rookie at some
- 24:18point. But I think the early stage
- 24:21struggles, it made sense, and once he found his rhythm, once
- 24:25he kind of knocked those nerves away, you saw what this team
- 24:28could really look like. Adam Thielen was not targeted,
- 24:31maybe one target other than the two point conversion that he
- 24:34caught, but during the during the regular time, he was not,
- 24:38did not catch a pass. Is that just, is he behind?
- 24:41Has the offense changed or is this just, you know, it wasn't,
- 24:45it wasn't his day to be a primary target.
- 24:47What the What's going on with Thielen?
- 24:50Yeah, I think part of that comes from he arrived a week and a
- 24:54half ago or a week and a half before the start of the season
- 24:57and he's probably playing a little bit of catch up with the
- 24:59offense. As smart as he is, as long as
- 25:01he's done this, the offense has changed since he's been in
- 25:04Minnesota. So I think there was always
- 25:06going to be a little bit of a ramp up process for him.
- 25:10But I think if you look across the board, I mean, there weren't
- 25:12the most prolific offensive stats.
- 25:15JJ McCarthy completed 13 passes on Monday night, so there wasn't
- 25:18a lot of reps to go around. Dustin Jefferson had four
- 25:21catches for 40 something yards and and a touchdown.
- 25:25He did Hawkinson, I think he had three catches for for 16 yards.
- 25:28But it's not like everyone else was eating and Adam Thielen was
- 25:32kind of left by the wayside. I think the way the game kind of
- 25:36happened for the 3/4 for 45 minutes of game time, there
- 25:41wasn't a lot of juice on offense, not a lot of reps to go
- 25:44around, not a lot of naps. When you when you look at how
- 25:48many plays the offensive players had, it's not a lot of snaps to
- 25:52go around. So I expect feeling at some
- 25:54point will will look a little bit more like the feeling that
- 25:57we know and not the feeling catching one or dropping a pass
- 26:01and catching A2 point conversion.
- 26:02I think that's just kind of a slow ramp up period.
- 26:05I think the offense as a whole will end up looking a lot
- 26:08better, you know, first month of the season and and beyond.
- 26:12Getting Christian Gerasaw back will help us.
- 26:14Goal didn't have a great night out there and you can see why.
- 26:16He's a swing tackle and he's going to be in there as an
- 26:18injury replacement. But rest of the offensive line I
- 26:21thought held up pretty well. Darasaw coming back and also one
- 26:24of the leaders of the team, Harrison Smith.
- 26:26Where's the what's the latest on both of those guys in their
- 26:28return? Yeah, we'll get updates today
- 26:31from an injury perspective. They the Vikings have to release
- 26:34an injury report today or this afternoon.
- 26:37I know they're going for a walk through practice, so it won't be
- 26:40super indicative. It'll probably be more of an
- 26:42estimation on the injury report. I think Darasaw is close.
- 26:47I saw him going through a pregame workout on the field
- 26:51with offensive line coach Chris Cooper on Monday night.
- 26:54I thought there was a chance. So I think he's getting close.
- 26:57They obviously held him out. They're going to operate with an
- 27:00abundance caution there because he's so important and you want
- 27:04to make sure when he is back he's 100%.
- 27:07But I think he's close. We'll see what the injury report
- 27:09says today. And Harrison Smith, I saw in
- 27:12that practice last week that there's there's improvements on
- 27:15that, that standpoint. He wasn't practicing or game
- 27:18training camp. He is practicing now.
- 27:20I think it's something along the lines of you want a guy to get
- 27:24reps before you just go throw them in.
- 27:26I know he's been doing this for a million years, but at the same
- 27:29time, to go from not practicing to playing in an NFL game is
- 27:34pretty tough. So I think if he can log a few
- 27:37practices this week, he'll have a chance for Sunday night.
- 27:39It seems as though they found their punt returner Miles Price
- 27:43looks as though he has a future at that position when he came
- 27:46close to breaking one. Looks like that may happen at
- 27:49some point this year. They have to be pleased with
- 27:51what they've got from the Indiana rookie.
- 27:54Yeah, he's got some juice. I really think if you go back
- 27:58and look, there's probably not a punt returner that has shown
- 28:02this much juice since Marcus Cheryl, the guy who did it for
- 28:0510 something years. So the Vikings have lauded Miles
- 28:09Price throughout training camp. He's a guy who just kind of came
- 28:12in a little wide eyed undrafted free agent and kept making
- 28:17plays, kept doing things that made you say, OK, yeah, this guy
- 28:22is going to be the starting punt returner.
- 28:24I think if if he didn't look as good as he did through the
- 28:28practices in the preseason games, obviously the Vikings
- 28:32would have gone out and they would have found a veteran who's
- 28:34done this before. I think it's a lot to ask for an
- 28:37undrafted free agent to do that role.
- 28:39You have to have a little bit of crazy when you have to just sit
- 28:42there and have people barreling down on you.
- 28:45But the way miles price performed this summer, he forced
- 28:49their hand, you know, they, they had to make them the starting
- 28:51point returner because he earned it.
- 28:53He earned the right to do that this fall.
- 28:56And they're they're obviously paying reaping the benefits of
- 28:59that right now with how he looked in week 1, he was
- 29:02dynamic. You're right.
- 29:03I think at some point he's going to break 1.
- 29:06He just seems to have that wiggle to make the first guy
- 29:08miss and that burst that you need in the open field.
- 29:11So they they found a diamond in the rough with Miles Price and I
- 29:15expect tend to be the partner Turner for a while.
- 29:17Last thing for me, mentioned this a year ago with Brian
- 29:20Flores and the likelihood that it's going to be difficult for
- 29:23him to get a head coaching job just with the litigation that
- 29:26has continued to happen and the Vikings are set up incredibly
- 29:30well. What do we know about the
- 29:31relationship between Flores and KOC and what very well could be
- 29:35a partnership you'd think for the next couple of years at
- 29:37minimum? Yeah, I know.
- 29:39They love working together. They seem to complement each
- 29:41other in a way that both kind of need.
- 29:44I think Slow loves calling the defense, O'Connell loves calling
- 29:48the offense. And if you're a head coach like
- 29:51you are for as Kevin O'Connell and you focus a lot of your time
- 29:55on the offense, it helps to have a guy like Brian Flores who can
- 30:00just kind of take that defense and mold it in the way that he
- 30:03wants. So it's a great partnership.
- 30:05I think that's a great word, Trent.
- 30:07They work together. They understand Indian
- 30:10situations, what the other one needs.
- 30:13I think it's it's good on Flores to be a former head coach and
- 30:18able to kind of take that delegation.
- 30:20But I think it's good on O'Connell too, to be a head
- 30:23coach and be OK kind of giving one of your assistants carp lots
- 30:27to do whatever he wants on that side of the ball.
- 30:30So I think it's a perfect marriage right now.
- 30:34I think at some point, Brian Flores is going to want to be a
- 30:37head coach in the NFL again. Will that happen?
- 30:41I don't know. Maybe he'll just kind of run the
- 30:43role, you know, similar to Steve Spagnola up in Kansas City where
- 30:48Spagnola was a great defensive coordinator, mediocre head coach
- 30:54and his kind of ended his career as a as the best defensive
- 30:57coordinator out there. So if Flores does not get
- 31:00another head coaching job does not mean he can't be paid
- 31:03handsomely as a top tier assistant.
- 31:05Yeah, Victoria Fangio, Vance Joe, what's the name?
- 31:09The Vance Joseph, right in in Denver.
- 31:11Yeah, 22 real quick away from the Vikings.
- 31:14We've got 60 seconds left, so I'll ask you both at the same
- 31:16time. I have to believe Roccobelly's
- 31:19Rocco Bell Deli's in his final couple of weeks is the Twin
- 31:21skipper. And then Caprisoff turned down
- 31:24an opportunity to become the highest NHL play paid player
- 31:27ever here today. Caprisoff What's going on there
- 31:31in his Bell Deli on his last days as skipper of the Twins.
- 31:35Yeah, I'm curious about Baldelli just because I think it's not
- 31:39been his fault. Totally.
- 31:40They they took away all his good players.
- 31:42He set them up on that run a couple of years ago and they
- 31:45they cut payroll. So if he's around next season, I
- 31:49guess that wouldn't totally surprise me.
- 31:50Karo Capresov. Look, I I saw the report.
- 31:55I know people are going to freak out that he turned down more
- 31:58money than anyone's ever made in the NHLII think it really comes
- 32:02down to probably something along the lines of, you know, there's
- 32:05going to be a new CBA at some point.
- 32:07Do you want to lock in to $8 million a year or do you want to
- 32:10lock into eight years at a certain specific dollar value?
- 32:15I think the caps going to keep going up.
- 32:16I think contracts are going to keep going up.
- 32:18I think it's the prudent business decision to sign
- 32:21another small, medium length deal.
- 32:24And if you can get to that next contract when they continue to
- 32:26boom, the contracts are not plateauing, they're only
- 32:29growing. So I think if you lock yourself
- 32:32in at 8 years at 16 mil, yeah, I mean, I'd love $16,000,000 for
- 32:36the next 8-8 years. But I think right now it's
- 32:40probably something that business decisions probably take a
- 32:43shorter deal and wait for the money to keep going up.
- 32:46I was hoping he'd say he's leaving the Central Division in
- 32:4810 somewhere else. I couldn't get that lucky.
- 32:51Dave, thanks for what you do for us.
- 32:52I appreciate it, as always. We'll talk to you in the weeks
- 32:54ahead. Thank you, Dane.
- 32:56Anytime, guys. Yeah.
- 32:57Good to talk to you. Dane.
- 32:58Mizatani, St. Paul, Pioneer Press.
- 33:00Mitch Holtis, next voice of the Chiefs.
- 33:02Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 33:05Hi, Miller and Condon. Welcome back.
- 33:06Let's get right to Mitch Holtis, radio voice of the Kansas City
- 33:10Chiefs. Game of the week is at Gia
- 33:13Field, Arrowhead Stadium. Eagles, Chiefs 325 on Fox or on
- 33:21the radio on the Chiefs Radio Network with this guy, Mitch
- 33:24Holtis. Hello, Mitch Trenton, Ken, how
- 33:26are you? Yeah.
- 33:27What's going on? You guys trying to figure it out
- 33:31O and one coming back from Brazil, so and then you get to
- 33:34try to fix it against the Eagles.
- 33:36This is not easy. You know, I'll say did them no
- 33:39favors, no question about it. Somebody yesterday mentioned the
- 33:42fact that that the Eagles went a day before to Brazil knowing how
- 33:47the game. Yeah, sorry, the Chargers, yes,
- 33:50went a day day earlier. Did that.
- 33:53Was that a factor at all? Would if Andy Reid could, would
- 33:56could do it again? Would they go early or did he
- 33:59bring that up at all? No, he didn't bring it up.
- 34:02Let me tell you. Why are they in our logistics?
- 34:05People did. Our folks did an incredible job.
- 34:10I told you before, it's just super hard for any of the 32
- 34:12teams. You're moving a small army and
- 34:14basically kind of deploying them for a short amount of time, but
- 34:19you also rely on third parties to try to help you out.
- 34:22For whatever reason, we were detained on the tarmac after we
- 34:25got on the plane in Kansas City for 2 1/2 hours.
- 34:29Before we flew 10 1/2 hours to Sao Paulo.
- 34:33Now do the math. Now you're 12 hours, you lose 2
- 34:36hours. Now you're at 14.
- 34:38Took about an hour to get through customs.
- 34:39Sao Paulo's the 4th largest city in the world until Los Angeles.
- 34:44Hold my beer. OK, so then you've got about an
- 34:48hour and a half two hour commute to the hotel.
- 34:50Then ended up being about a 17 or 18 hour day.
- 34:53Now, that was not on the script. And then Brazil's just got some
- 35:01things to figure out what that game and the league does because
- 35:05the Chargers stayed really close to Arena, Arena Corinthians.
- 35:09But the Chiefs were basically, I would tell you, it would be like
- 35:13they were in going to Iowa City to play a game on the day of the
- 35:17game, but then you're in traffic.
- 35:19I just think of the traffic on I-80 going to the IndyCar race
- 35:22when I was doing that with Hyvee and that's what you're in for
- 35:27like 2 hours on the day of the game.
- 35:29It just it's clunky a little bit.
- 35:32So I just think there's some things to now that sounds like
- 35:34excuses. Coach would slap my hand, but
- 35:38I'm just telling you what's fact here.
- 35:41I just think that when you rely on some third parties, they got
- 35:44to come through with you as well.
- 35:46Be nice if somebody like the Dolphins was on the schedule
- 35:48this week. Instead, it's the defending
- 35:50champion of Philadelphia Eagles that you're going to see.
- 35:53Or won 15 straight games when Hurts isn't.
- 35:56Hurts is healthy start to finish, yeah.
- 35:57That absolutely crazy. What do you do?
- 36:02I mean, it's a short week, though.
- 36:03It wasn't a short week. He has to get the two extra
- 36:05days, but still coming back here and he got this behemoth here
- 36:09and and the revenge factor also. I mean, they're not going to
- 36:11come out and say it, but it definitely has to be lingering
- 36:14in the minds of the players. Well, it's hard to fix things
- 36:19against a team like the Eagles because they love to play games
- 36:23on their own terms. Meaning, I mean, K State's gone
- 36:26through this after they lost Iowa State.
- 36:27They're trying to fix it on the fly coming back from Ireland,
- 36:31just like it was much very similar to the Brazil game.
- 36:33But then you can then you play army when you're trying to
- 36:35figure it out. That's not the team to play
- 36:37because you just Philadelphia will hold the ball, hold the
- 36:40ball and Hertz is so good now as a runner. 57 career touchdown
- 36:45rushing by a quarterback that's the most in NFL history, 52 in
- 36:49the last four years. Hertz has just become so
- 36:52impactful runner and thrower. He didn't throw much against
- 36:56Dallas. Where the Chiefs have to
- 36:58counter. You asked is somehow the Chiefs
- 37:00have to change and dictate terms to the Eagles early on.
- 37:05I sent you some sound one guy that's key, particularly with
- 37:08Xavier Worthy injured and Rushy rice suspended.
- 37:13You're down to could be 3 of Jalen Royals.
- 37:15Is that again, but the key is Juju Smith Shuster.
- 37:18Listen to his answer. I'll explain it is this is one
- 37:20of the ways you can win this game because I called Juju Smith
- 37:23Shuster the door hinge. What does that mean?
- 37:26I'll let him explain it. It helps our team to be
- 37:29successful and win. I'm down to do it, but and those
- 37:33aggressive catches, man, like those are the ones you want.
- 37:35I think the easy ones that come and go, you know that you got to
- 37:38have those. But at the end of the day, when
- 37:39you get those tough ones where it's dirty, 4:30 and 5:00 and
- 37:42you need to make a play, that's where you go to.
- 37:44And then you talk about the door hinge.
- 37:45Door hinge is something I take pride in, right?
- 37:49Someone who knows man versus zone and how to pick and how to,
- 37:53you know, reroute for leverage is huge.
- 37:55And I've learned that a lot here being under this offense.
- 38:00In Andy's offense, I saw it with Jason Avantis first year, there
- 38:03has to be a door hinge guy. He sets the triangle, opens the
- 38:06door for others where he makes the tough play, but she's had to
- 38:10sustain drives. They almost have to turn the
- 38:12cannon on the Eagles in this game and do it initially.
- 38:15They've got to attack from the beginning and give some level of
- 38:18discomfort to the Eagles because the Eagles love to spend all day
- 38:22making you feel uncomfortable. Juju Smith Schuster becomes very
- 38:26key in this game, particularly considering the circumstances
- 38:29and the opponent. Shamari Connor, it seems like
- 38:33his light bulb going on. Mitch seemingly he was all over
- 38:35the field in Brazil, LED the the team in tackles if memory
- 38:39serves. What's going on there have to be
- 38:41positive with the with how they're viewing him as of late.
- 38:46Yeah, I mean he got burned 7 times.
- 38:48That was the most in week one in the National Football League.
- 38:51Things have got to be better there.
- 38:53You also have to win on 1st down against the Eagles.
- 38:57But third down has been a problem for the Chiefs
- 38:59defensively and this carries over 2 last year, even when they
- 39:03were on the run prior to losing Super Bowl 59.
- 39:06So 3rd down especially long because it was torture against
- 39:11the Chargers. Again, third and seven, they get
- 39:139. Third and six, they get 8.
- 39:15Then they get the 3rd and 14 at the end for 19 to win the game.
- 39:19But anyway, it's you've got to win on 1st down and you've got
- 39:25to know your assignment, but you've got to keep them out of
- 39:27third short because that's automatic.
- 39:30They had five third and threes or last against the Cowboys and
- 39:33they converted all 5. It's just what they do.
- 39:36So yeah, they're like playing a really talented Military Academy
- 39:42version in the NFL. Speaking of automatic.
- 39:44Can I? Yeah.
- 39:45Go ahead. Can I say something real quick?
- 39:47Yeah. OK.
- 39:47Cooper De Jean had to pick six against us.
- 39:49Yeah. Here's something I've got with
- 39:51Iowa schools. He went to OABCIG High School.
- 39:54Yes. Right.
- 39:56Yes. Last night in volleyball they
- 39:57played MVA0C 0U. Nice.

- 40:14Donaldsons. What's the special?
