- 1:08Speaker 1: in Atlantic City. You know, it's that time of the
- 1:10Speaker 1: year ESPN dot com kind of doing all their lists
- 1:13Speaker 1: and all that kind of stuff. We do have a
- 1:15Speaker 1: Mosher mail bag for you. Mosher will join us in
- 1:18Speaker 1: just a moment here. We certainly you know, we're getting
- 1:22Speaker 1: counting down here, twenty days until the Eagles report to
- 1:26Speaker 1: training camp and they will start things off the twenty
- 1:29Speaker 1: days from now. That will be on a believe that's
- 1:33Speaker 1: a Tuesday that the Eagles will report. Wednesday will be
- 1:36Speaker 1: the first day on the practice field. And I was
- 1:38Speaker 1: just looking over the first preseason game is August the fifteenth.
- 1:43Speaker 1: They will play the Baltimore Ravens and then they will
- 1:46Speaker 1: play the New England Patriots and the Cincinnati Bengals in
- 1:48Speaker 1: the month of August as they get ready for the
- 1:51Speaker 1: twenty twenty sixth season. And we were talking odds yesterday
- 1:54Speaker 1: with Adam Kaplan over under the wind Totals, and I
- 1:59Speaker 1: thought it was an interest number that really it seems
- 2:01Speaker 1: that that sweet spot is about ten. Jeff Mocher nine
- 2:04Speaker 1: and a half, ten and a half. If you find
- 2:06Speaker 1: like you're right in there, that seems like the sweet spot.
- 2:09Speaker 1: There's so many variables that people keep sending questions in
- 2:13Speaker 1: for these segments that they need answered to see if
- 2:15Speaker 1: they can get ten. But I don't know if you
- 2:17Speaker 1: saw any of those odds and thought that something stood
- 2:20Speaker 1: out about them, because I definitely thought that getting to
- 2:23Speaker 1: twelve and a half or getting over twelve and a half,
- 2:26Speaker 1: that number seemed to be a little out there for me.
- 2:29Speaker 1: But the one number was the fact that to win
- 2:33Speaker 1: the NFC East and to make the playoffs, I thought
- 2:36Speaker 1: they were a little lower than I anticipated. To win
- 2:39Speaker 1: the NFC, they are not a huge heavy favorite there.
- 2:42Speaker 1: While they are a favorite plus money, not huge favorite
- 2:46Speaker 1: in that realm.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I can understand that. I mean, first of all,
- 2:50Speaker 2: the division's tougher. The he was have won of two
- 2:52Speaker 2: years in a row, which is already you know, a
- 2:55Speaker 2: historical feat, right, And I mean, and no one's won
- 2:58Speaker 2: in three years in a row since they did it.
- 3:00Speaker 2: The same time they did two in row, they ran
- 3:01Speaker 2: three in a row, so it's been twenty some odd
- 3:04Speaker 2: years since that happened. Dallas has made a lot of improvements.
- 3:08Speaker 2: I don't know that there it's all going to click
- 3:10Speaker 2: immediately for them. Every team has made a lot of
- 3:14Speaker 2: in the division, has made a lot of coaching changes,
- 3:16Speaker 2: and you know, you're getting a healthier quarterback back in
- 3:20Speaker 2: Washington who was very dynamic as a rookie. And you
- 3:23Speaker 2: know you saw some pretty good stuff out of Dart
- 3:24Speaker 2: last year with the Giants. So it's a it's a
- 3:27Speaker 2: tougher division. So like it's going to be harder to
- 3:30Speaker 2: win it by three games or going away like the
- 3:33Speaker 2: Eagles have done in the past years.
- 3:36Speaker 1: We have some interesting questions today and obviously the offense
- 3:41Speaker 1: is going to be a lot different we think this year.
- 3:43Speaker 1: That is the main you know, I don't know is
- 3:46Speaker 1: that the main storyline for you going into camp's got
- 3:48Speaker 1: to be right the new offense.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Yeah, that, and you know, what's the status of Jail
- 3:53Speaker 2: and Carter.
- 3:54Speaker 1: But yeah, let's start with Mark and sea Isle today.
- 3:58Speaker 1: I think Mark brings up a question that is probably
- 4:01Speaker 1: outside the box here a little bit. Mark and Seaile
- 4:03Speaker 1: says Mike. I'm fascinating about what Jeff Boscher said about
- 4:06Speaker 1: Cole Peyton. Uh, it seems like he's a Taysom Hill
- 4:10Speaker 1: type of player. But do you think the coaching staff
- 4:13Speaker 1: actually will utilize him in a role like that this year?
- 4:18Speaker 2: You know, it's gonna be hard to sort of throw
- 4:21Speaker 2: a guy in there when you're already acclimating to a
- 4:24Speaker 2: new offense and you're trying to get everybody comfortable.
- 4:27Speaker 3: But I think so.
- 4:29Speaker 2: I think it depends on how fast everything gets picked
- 4:32Speaker 2: up by everybody else. But he's going to be inactive
- 4:36Speaker 2: for the most part from a number standpoint, especially if
- 4:39Speaker 2: they're keeping three quarterbacks. I'm sorry, if they're keeping four
- 4:43Speaker 2: quarterbacks and you only have remember you can only keep
- 4:47Speaker 2: a certain number active on game day, so I don't
- 4:50Speaker 2: I can't imagine he'd be active enough to even get
- 4:52Speaker 2: him into the game.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Yeah, like to say that you're going to put a
- 4:56Speaker 1: package in for him. Maybe if they moved Tanner McKee.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Maybe maybe, but I think it's still yeah, because you
- 5:09Speaker 2: have the emergency quarterback thing.
- 5:10Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 5:11Speaker 2: I still think in general his the idea of using
- 5:15Speaker 2: him as Taysom Hill was something that the Saints did
- 5:20Speaker 2: because their offense in general was lackluster at times and
- 5:25Speaker 2: needed a little bit sprucing up. So I think if
- 5:28Speaker 2: the Eagles offense is doing well, you'll probably not need
- 5:32Speaker 2: a Cole Payton to go in there and be a
- 5:35Speaker 2: change up for you, I think. And you can argue, well,
- 5:38Speaker 2: then why would you ever want him? Because why would
- 5:41Speaker 2: you ever use him that role? Because the expectation is
- 5:43Speaker 2: to be a good offense and you have a lot
- 5:44Speaker 2: of good offensive players and I get that, but I
- 5:47Speaker 2: think this kid's got to also learn a little bit
- 5:49Speaker 2: and before he gets on the field start doing that stuff.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, exactly why would you draft a out that
- 5:54Speaker 3: you have no vision for? Right right? Right?
- 5:58Speaker 1: You mentioned Jalen Carter as a christ and Vorhees says,
- 6:01Speaker 1: my question is on Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis. He says,
- 6:05Speaker 1: Davis got his three year extension. Carter seems locked in.
- 6:08Speaker 1: But behind them is Borrow, Ojomo Jeff. Do they have
- 6:11Speaker 1: any more depth at defensive tackle behind those three guys?
- 6:17Speaker 2: Well, I thought Byron Young played fairly decently when he
- 6:20Speaker 2: was asked to go in in a smaller role, you know,
- 6:23Speaker 2: when Jialen Carter was hurt last year, and they certainly
- 6:26Speaker 2: he certainly held the fourth down. He's not nearly that
- 6:29Speaker 2: kind of player, but he was a third round pick
- 6:31Speaker 2: out of Alabama. Raiders gave up on him way too early,
- 6:34Speaker 2: and I do think he played some meaningful snaps when
- 6:37Speaker 2: he got in for the Eagles last year. And of
- 6:39Speaker 2: course they drafted Ty Robinson last year was at the
- 6:42Speaker 2: fourth round. I believe he was, and so maybe the fifth,
- 6:45Speaker 2: and they're they're expecting, after a year of development to
- 6:47Speaker 2: see some a step step up from him. You would
- 6:51Speaker 2: have said after Moro, Ojomo and Milton Williams his first
- 6:54Speaker 2: year that like, is that depth of these guys any good?
- 6:57Speaker 2: Because they just didn't play a whole lot because they
- 6:59Speaker 2: were good players. So I don't want to completely dismiss
- 7:03Speaker 2: Ty Robinson because he didn't play a whole lot last year.
- 7:06Speaker 2: He's behind a lot of good players.
- 7:08Speaker 3: He is, and you take a look at that.
- 7:10Speaker 1: That is a position that they have done a really
- 7:12Speaker 1: good job Jeff of just kind of finding diamonds in
- 7:14Speaker 1: the rough.
- 7:15Speaker 2: It seems like, yeah, I mean, their draft picks have
- 7:18Speaker 2: worked out. Milton Williams was a third round pick, he
- 7:20Speaker 2: worked out, and Joemo is a seventh round pick and
- 7:24Speaker 2: he has more than worked out. So I think that
- 7:27Speaker 2: there's a reason to give ty Robinson some you know,
- 7:31Speaker 2: looks here and at least some patience and see if
- 7:33Speaker 2: he can develop in year two.
- 7:36Speaker 1: And just to go off that question as well, like
- 7:39Speaker 1: you know, you've got Jordan Davis, You've got Jalen Carter,
- 7:41Speaker 1: who's going to be a story whether he's healthy. And
- 7:44Speaker 1: then the contract dang borrow. Jomo's a guy too that
- 7:47Speaker 1: he's really playing to. I'm imagining in the back of
- 7:50Speaker 1: his mind, he's got the Milton Williams bag in the
- 7:52Speaker 1: back of his mind, right he does.
- 7:55Speaker 3: It's interesting.
- 7:55Speaker 2: I remember speaking to him after a game last year
- 7:58Speaker 2: and one thing he said was he loved Vic Fangio's
- 8:01Speaker 2: defense so much and playing here so much, he never
- 8:04Speaker 2: wanted to leave. And I kept thinking, oh, man, if
- 8:07Speaker 2: your agencies that you're gonna be he's gonna be calling
- 8:10Speaker 2: you or she's gonna be calling you the next day
- 8:12Speaker 2: to say, don't say things like that publicly doesn't help
- 8:15Speaker 2: in your leverage. So at some point, like you can't
- 8:18Speaker 2: turn down a boatload of money if it's there, and
- 8:22Speaker 2: if he if his agency and he understands that in
- 8:25Speaker 2: free agency he could get north of twenty twenty five
- 8:29Speaker 2: million dollars, you know, then it's hard to turn that
- 8:33Speaker 2: down no matter how much you love being here. I'm
- 8:35Speaker 2: sure the Eagles are trying, which are trying to lock
- 8:38Speaker 2: him up, but at a rate that makes sense for them,
- 8:40Speaker 2: knowing that they also have Jordan Davis locked up and
- 8:43Speaker 2: trying to get Jaen Carter locked up and have other
- 8:45Speaker 2: guys a we'll have to get locked up on defense.
- 8:48Speaker 2: But you still don't want that guy to just walk away.
- 8:50Speaker 2: You want to see if you can retain him first,
- 8:53Speaker 2: and then it's down to Morojoemo. Does really really want
- 8:56Speaker 2: to be here so badly that he would take maybe
- 8:59Speaker 2: may your hometown discount or is he just gonna follow
- 9:02Speaker 2: in the footsteps of Milton Williams and Jyalen Phillips and
- 9:05Speaker 2: see the bigger prize elsewhere?
- 9:07Speaker 1: All right, let's go to Dave and milvos as Mike
- 9:09Speaker 1: get Jeff. I love the mailbag segments. My question is, Jeff,
- 9:13Speaker 1: is there anybody on the roster that has a legitimate
- 9:17Speaker 1: shot to push Tyler Steen for the starting guard spot.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Mmm. Let's keep an eye on Mark Halpell and how
- 9:28Speaker 2: they train him and if they cross train him at
- 9:32Speaker 2: right guard a lot. You know, in the OTAs, I
- 9:35Speaker 2: think he started off with right tackle because Lane Johnson
- 9:37Speaker 2: wasn't there. And then when Lane reported they had him playing,
- 9:42Speaker 2: where did they have him on second team tackle? I
- 9:44Speaker 2: think left tackle? IM I know they were working him
- 9:47Speaker 2: out of guard a little bit. But if there's gonna
- 9:49Speaker 2: be somebody that pushes Steen out of the job, it
- 9:54Speaker 2: would be Mark Halbell because he's built like a guard.
- 9:57Speaker 2: He's very wide, he's very he might be a little tall.
- 10:00Speaker 2: It was Jeff Stealtwin who didn't mind big tall guards.
- 10:03Speaker 2: I don't know how Chris Cooper feels about a six
- 10:05Speaker 2: foot six, six foot seven guard, three hundred and fifty
- 10:08Speaker 2: pound behemoth guard.
- 10:10Speaker 3: You know.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Mikeah Morris from Georgia, the sixth round pick, was a
- 10:13Speaker 2: great athlete. He really fell to the sixth round because
- 10:15Speaker 2: they had like thirteen starts in college. But I don't
- 10:18Speaker 2: know that they want to take away from the continuity
- 10:20Speaker 2: that they have. Tyler Stein played fine last year. It
- 10:22Speaker 2: may not be great, but he's not bad. And the
- 10:25Speaker 2: only if you if you really felt that Mark hel
- 10:28Speaker 2: Bell or mikea and Morris was ready to be a
- 10:29Speaker 2: starter from day one, then you would look to trade
- 10:32Speaker 2: tyler Stein before the end of camp.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Steen would you say he was I don't know.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Was he even the weak link on that line last
- 10:40Speaker 1: year that had so many injuries and problems?
- 10:42Speaker 2: No, he was not the week link on the Lion.
- 10:44Speaker 2: I mean the week link.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Was clearly like everybody think that he's the weak linth
- 10:48Speaker 1: even though that he maybe eve been the steadiest guy.
- 10:51Speaker 2: I think the problem with tyler Stein is that everybody
- 10:53Speaker 2: else on the line is a pro bowler and all
- 10:55Speaker 2: pro and that it took Steen a couple of years
- 10:59Speaker 2: to become a starter, and then when he did, the
- 11:02Speaker 2: offensive line kind of fell apart around him. And he's
- 11:05Speaker 2: just not viewed as that guy who is Landon Dickerson
- 11:08Speaker 2: or Jordan Malata or or Cam Jurgens. Right, But he's
- 11:12Speaker 2: not bad.
- 11:12Speaker 3: It's not at all.
- 11:14Speaker 1: It's like if you're not an All Star, you're not
- 11:16Speaker 1: any good. If you're not a pro bowler, you stink
- 11:19Speaker 1: and tilers not you know on that level, all right.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Yeah, And also like playing right guard for the Eagles
- 11:25Speaker 2: last year, whether it was Beckton, whether it was sayam Alu,
- 11:27Speaker 2: whether it was Brandon Brooks, it's always been a spot
- 11:30Speaker 2: where there's been some big time stud there.
- 11:32Speaker 1: So oh, you're right, because Becked in the year before
- 11:35Speaker 1: it was almost like viewed that he was a major
- 11:39Speaker 1: part of why that line clicked right eaves and it's like, well,
- 11:43Speaker 1: he's not there, it must be you that were the problem.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Exactly, exactly, big shoes to fill, all right.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Literally to uh FRANKT Defford, Uh, Mike and Jeff, what's
- 11:56Speaker 1: up boys, We're good. Frank, he wants to know, Jeff,
- 12:01Speaker 1: what is your thoughts on Cole Whiz news Ski Do
- 12:04Speaker 1: you see him as a surprise potential at camp?
- 12:09Speaker 2: First of all, I'm loving that you were getting like
- 12:11Speaker 2: mail bag Deptford. We had one from Williamstown.
- 12:13Speaker 3: The other day.
- 12:14Speaker 2: We got some from my neck of the woods, So
- 12:16Speaker 2: you're welcome, Michael, my my area.
- 12:19Speaker 3: To you. Two things, Jeff.
- 12:21Speaker 1: One, if you didn't know there's a lot of people
- 12:24Speaker 1: down the shore in the summertime that I've heard. Our
- 12:29Speaker 1: signal does reach a lot of many of these areas.
- 12:32Speaker 1: We do cover eight South Jersey counties, so we do
- 12:36Speaker 1: have people in that hood listening to us. I appreciate
- 12:39Speaker 1: them listening in. If you're finding us, we do the
- 12:41Speaker 1: most your mail bags in the summertime, you know, during
- 12:44Speaker 1: the slow time of football. You guys, get your question.
- 12:47Speaker 1: I asked all the questions a lot of times. This
- 12:49Speaker 1: is great, not having to ask all the questions.
- 12:51Speaker 3: I love it.
- 12:52Speaker 2: It's what it's like. Jimmy Keemski does a mail bag
- 12:55Speaker 2: for us on for Philly Voice, and his opening paragraph says,
- 12:57Speaker 2: as always, thanks for doing half the work for me,
- 13:00Speaker 2: which is true.
- 13:03Speaker 3: Out the box questions.
- 13:04Speaker 2: They are they are so so. Cole was Nowski is
- 13:07Speaker 2: interesting because normally, as a seventh round pick, he'd be
- 13:10Speaker 2: like nah, probably not especially not only is a seventh
- 13:13Speaker 2: round pick, but he's a safety who's built like a linebacker.
- 13:16Speaker 2: He doesn't run particularly fast, or he's not known for
- 13:21Speaker 2: fantastic coverage. However, I believe it was Andrew de Checko
- 13:24Speaker 2: who did a story on Cole for US on Inside
- 13:27Speaker 2: the birds dot Com caught up with his position coach,
- 13:29Speaker 2: and position coach said, you know, he didn't run a
- 13:32Speaker 2: fast forty, but he plays. You know, there's always your
- 13:35Speaker 2: time speed and your play speed. Sometimes they don't match up.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Sometimes you run a four to two and it doesn't
- 13:40Speaker 2: and you're not great, right, Sometimes you run a four
- 13:42Speaker 2: to five. You right, you run a four to five.
- 13:46Speaker 2: But you're smart, you're instinctive, you know how to play
- 13:48Speaker 2: the game. And that's where Cole was Nowski's position coach
- 13:52Speaker 2: at at where the heck it's funny he started off,
- 13:55Speaker 2: and he started off with Peyton there at North Dakota State.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Then he transferred to who I want to say, Texas
- 14:01Speaker 2: Tech or A and m I think, yeah, Texas Tech,
- 14:06Speaker 2: right right, So his position coach at Texas Tech. It's
- 14:09Speaker 2: basically like this guy moves a lot better than you think, uh,
- 14:13Speaker 2: and so there's a lot of opportunity. And another thing
- 14:15Speaker 2: is they've got the defense they play in Texas Tech
- 14:19Speaker 2: has a lot of Fangio principles in it. So he's
- 14:22Speaker 2: school he'll understand this defense, he'll understand the role, he'll
- 14:27Speaker 2: understand what he's asked to do, and he'll have an
- 14:29Speaker 2: opportunity because the Eagles just aren't deep at safety. You've
- 14:32Speaker 2: got you've got basically Cooper to gen moonlighting there with mccouba.
- 14:37Speaker 3: Mccooba was hurt.
- 14:38Speaker 2: A lot last year. And then you're looking at the
- 14:40Speaker 2: Marcus EPs of the world and Michael Carter the second.
- 14:44Speaker 2: I'm optimistic about both of those guys, but there is
- 14:47Speaker 2: certainly an opportunity for Colesnewski or I know this wasn't
- 14:52Speaker 2: part of the question, but they have a rookie free
- 14:54Speaker 2: agent named Maximus Pulley who went to Wafford and the
- 14:58Speaker 2: dude had like six picks last next year a couple return,
- 15:01Speaker 2: a couple for a touchdown. He's a real playmaker and
- 15:04Speaker 2: he's got some real athleticism. So the point I'm trying
- 15:07Speaker 2: to make is that the first way you make it
- 15:09Speaker 2: is through special teams when you're a bottom roster safety.
- 15:13Speaker 2: So either of those two guys, it would really help
- 15:15Speaker 2: for them to be good special teams players. But let's
- 15:18Speaker 2: just like with Read Blankenship, you never know like you
- 15:21Speaker 2: make a team because you're you're good on defense, you're
- 15:23Speaker 2: good on special teams, you're surprisingly good. Uh, and then
- 15:27Speaker 2: all of a sudden there's injuries at the position or
- 15:29Speaker 2: something happens and you're rising up the ladder. So yeah,
- 15:32Speaker 2: there will be an opportunity for that tonight. I mean
- 15:37Speaker 2: for this year with with with Coles, Newski and Pulley.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Jeff Boscher football for a couple more here, Rich and Vineland,
- 15:46Speaker 1: Jeff vic Fangio doesn't like the blitch. Which edge rusher
- 15:51Speaker 1: emerges as the leading sack guy.
- 15:55Speaker 2: I think it'll be Jonathan Gernard. I mean it could
- 15:58Speaker 2: it could be could be here, Sure, could be Jelex Hunt.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Maybe it's Nolan Smith if he really gets on an eater.
- 16:03Speaker 2: But you know, Grenard's gonna probably play the most snaps
- 16:05Speaker 2: of the position. He's got tremendous speed. He's gonna see
- 16:09Speaker 2: a lot of one on ones because if Jalen Carter
- 16:11Speaker 2: is playing, he's gonna command the double teams. They're gonna
- 16:16Speaker 2: move this offense, They're gonna move this defensive line a lot.
- 16:19Speaker 2: I think you're gonna see some stuntings. Like you said,
- 16:22Speaker 2: he's not gonna blitz, but you're gonna see some creeper pressure,
- 16:25Speaker 2: some sim pressures. And I just think that Grenard's gonna
- 16:28Speaker 2: be pretty driven based on how last year went with
- 16:32Speaker 2: the shoulder injury and everything and having a down year.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Pete and Medford, we'll answer one or two more here.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Pete Medford's up next. Somebody asked the question about Eli
- 16:42Speaker 1: Stowers a couple of mail bags ago, but he mentioned
- 16:45Speaker 1: them as a former college quarterback, the ability to run.
- 16:49Speaker 3: Is he a guy that we're not talking enough about.
- 16:53Speaker 2: It's tough only because I agree that being the quarterback
- 16:58Speaker 2: could help him at the position the way it did
- 16:59Speaker 2: for like Ward when Greg Ward would have really good,
- 17:02Speaker 2: impressive camps for the Eagles and he used to be
- 17:04Speaker 2: a quarterback. But the being a quarterback isn't gonna help
- 17:10Speaker 2: him in the area that mostly he needs to refine
- 17:13Speaker 2: to get on the field, which is blocking, right. That's
- 17:17Speaker 2: you're a tight end. You're in a Shanahan style McVay
- 17:20Speaker 2: style offense. You're a tight end. You're gonna have to
- 17:22Speaker 2: block or else you can only get on the field
- 17:25Speaker 2: as a flex tight end. And you know that's telegraphic
- 17:27Speaker 2: and that limits you to them being on in third
- 17:30Speaker 2: downs or obvious passing.
- 17:31Speaker 3: Sydy Mont a shoe in to make the team.
- 17:36Speaker 2: I don't think he's a shoe in because I think
- 17:38Speaker 2: you can probably get him on the practice squad, but
- 17:41Speaker 2: to me, he's a shoe in to be on the ninety.
- 17:44Speaker 2: You know, the either the fifty three or the practice
- 17:47Speaker 2: squad is that night. I forget how much it adds
- 17:49Speaker 2: up to these days, but whatever it is, the the team, Yes,
- 17:53Speaker 2: the fifty three man.
- 17:54Speaker 1: No, all right, Jeff Boscher with us. Thanks to everybody
- 17:58Speaker 1: for the mailbag questions. You can eat, keep them coming.
- 18:01Speaker 1: We have a couple more mail bags before the start
- 18:03Speaker 1: of training camp. He or so if you have Eagles
- 18:05Speaker 1: questions for Jeff Mocher, we do the Mosher mail bags
- 18:08Speaker 1: on Mondays and Wednesdays here Andrew. Tomorrow starts our division
- 18:12Speaker 1: previews for football at four. We're gonna look at the
- 18:15Speaker 1: AFC East tomorrow, all four teams in the East, and
- 18:19Speaker 1: then of course Adam's back on Friday show. Now, before
- 18:23Speaker 1: we get out of here, Mosher, you were texting up
- 18:24Speaker 1: a storm with the Soccer conversation yesterday. You want to
- 18:27Speaker 1: state your case to our listeners.
- 18:31Speaker 2: All right, So, I think a lot of the points
- 18:34Speaker 2: you maye were really revalid. I didn't have that much
- 18:37Speaker 2: of an argument with what you were saying, except I
- 18:39Speaker 2: just feel like that was a very low point moment
- 18:43Speaker 2: for the USA Soccer. I think they just had a
- 18:45Speaker 2: bad game. I thought they played better against better teams
- 18:49Speaker 2: in the tournament.
- 18:50Speaker 3: One on that is now, But I would also ask
- 18:52Speaker 3: this question.
- 18:52Speaker 1: In soccer, you could lose a game two to one
- 18:55Speaker 1: and it's and it looks close, but that's right close, right, No.
- 19:00Speaker 2: They played as bad as a team any team could
- 19:02Speaker 2: play in that that and and it's certainly fair to
- 19:05Speaker 2: say maybe that the moment got a little too big
- 19:07Speaker 2: for them. That is absolutely fair. But I wonder you
- 19:12Speaker 2: were sort of going down this road like this is
- 19:14Speaker 2: what we'll be and that's okay, and we'll never be
- 19:17Speaker 2: better because we're it's not our we don't worship, it's
- 19:20Speaker 2: not our culture. And I would say, well, we've gotten better,
- 19:24Speaker 2: and why can't. If I were to take your argument
- 19:27Speaker 2: to basketball in Europe, you would never think a European
- 19:30Speaker 2: team could have beaten one of our dream teams. But
- 19:32Speaker 2: they did.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Yeah, but the one and I and I did talk
- 19:35Speaker 1: about this a little bit, and it is a good point.
- 19:37Speaker 1: My retort to that would be soccer maybe number one,
- 19:42Speaker 1: but basketball is number two here. Soccer is not number two,
- 19:47Speaker 1: it's number four, five, six, seven, eight, depending on what
- 19:51Speaker 1: area of the country you live in. So basketball has
- 19:54Speaker 1: closed the gap in other countries because it's the second sport.
- 19:58Speaker 3: In many of these countries.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Here soccer is still a distant four fifth, sixth, seventh
- 20:05Speaker 1: somewhere down the line.
- 20:06Speaker 3: Do you agree with that?
- 20:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I would agree with that, But you're we're also
- 20:09Speaker 2: an enormous country compared to like a Croatia or Lithuania,
- 20:12Speaker 2: where it might be number two, But you're still comparing
- 20:15Speaker 2: a country of you know, a double digit like ten
- 20:18Speaker 2: million to twelve million. They're one of our So I
- 20:21Speaker 2: think we can be if we continue to put more resources,
- 20:25Speaker 2: which we tend to do and there's work on it.
- 20:27Speaker 2: I think we can be the occasional team that makes
- 20:30Speaker 2: it to that you know, and has that.
- 20:31Speaker 1: Upset possibly occasional right once every twenty years we pop
- 20:37Speaker 1: into the whatever. But that being said, the big difference
- 20:40Speaker 1: too is, you know, if you're a basketball player, there
- 20:45Speaker 1: is a goal for many people that live in other
- 20:49Speaker 1: countries to come to our country and live here. Yes,
- 20:54Speaker 1: oh too many people who were born here and their
- 20:56Speaker 1: goal is I really want to go move to Bosnia
- 20:59Speaker 1: and that that's where I want to go. Play professional sports.
- 21:02Speaker 1: Like I'm saying Bosnia because we played them, or or
- 21:05Speaker 1: or Belgium. Those players are awesome to go visit, but
- 21:09Speaker 1: it's not like a six year old's dream to say, Hey,
- 21:12Speaker 1: I want to make it professionally, but to do so,
- 21:14Speaker 1: I'm gonna have to move to Europe is not is
- 21:17Speaker 1: a tough sell for a parent.
- 21:19Speaker 2: I suppose so. But we I think if you look
- 21:21Speaker 2: up and down that roster of the US men's national team,
- 21:24Speaker 2: whether it's pulistic, whether it's pulogian, that they do play
- 21:27Speaker 2: professionally in like good cities, I mean in in like
- 21:31Speaker 2: Premier League and other like in the top.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Leagues, they do, but I would imagine their preference would
- 21:37Speaker 1: be that the MLS was bigger than there and they
- 21:40Speaker 1: didn't have to do that, is my point.
- 21:42Speaker 2: Well, I don't know that that that gets into the
- 21:45Speaker 2: whole like that is the Premier League like the Premier League,
- 21:49Speaker 2: I shouldn't.
- 21:49Speaker 1: I oh, I agree, But that's part of the drawback
- 21:52Speaker 1: of if you are an elite player, you have to
- 21:56Speaker 1: say to yourself, if I'm gonna be elite at this sport,
- 21:59Speaker 1: I'm gonna have to live in another country for seven
- 22:02Speaker 1: eight to ten to twelve years of my life.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I mean I get yeah, I get your point.
- 22:08Speaker 2: I was gonna say, that's what the European basketball players
- 22:10Speaker 2: do when they come to America. Like, we love America,
- 22:12Speaker 2: America's great, but like who you may grow up a
- 22:15Speaker 2: Croatia and be like, do I really want to go
- 22:16Speaker 2: live in Oklahoma City or Milwaukee?
- 22:18Speaker 1: Like I agree with that, And I guess, you know,
- 22:22Speaker 1: maybe there would be more Croatian players over here if
- 22:25Speaker 1: they had more desire to do it.
- 22:26Speaker 3: Maybe that's why there are so few.
- 22:28Speaker 2: It's a good argument. It's what, like I said, I
- 22:30Speaker 2: agree with a lot of what you said. I just
- 22:32Speaker 2: feel like I felt like that was more reflective of
- 22:36Speaker 2: one of our worst moments than the fact that we
- 22:38Speaker 2: have not bridged a bigger gap, so to speak.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel like in nineteen ninety four, nineteen ninety eight,
- 22:45Speaker 1: two thousand and two, we're no closer.
- 22:51Speaker 2: Hmm, that's tough. I don't know. I mean, certainly that
- 22:54Speaker 2: game gave us you're a great argument to it, but
- 22:57Speaker 2: like I would have just loved to have seen if
- 22:59Speaker 2: we could have played a better game, and you know
- 23:01Speaker 2: what would have happened. But yeah, we don't get that, And.
- 23:04Speaker 1: I'll ask you the same question I asked a lot
- 23:05Speaker 1: of people the last couple of weeks, is if the
- 23:08Speaker 1: United States won the World Cup. I'm not sure what
- 23:12Speaker 1: that would do overall for the sport in this country.
- 23:15Speaker 1: I just don't know what the answer is.
- 23:18Speaker 2: I would agree, I don't know if that would be.
- 23:19Speaker 2: It would be a great moment historical history, historically, but
- 23:22Speaker 2: I don't know that it would be It's like anything better.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Yeah, the United States winning the Gold in nineteen eighty
- 23:29Speaker 1: did that help Hot? I wasn't alive, I was three
- 23:32Speaker 1: years old. I don't know what that did for a hot.
- 23:35Speaker 1: But the United States winning gold seems like a great moment,
- 23:39Speaker 1: but I don't know that it really changes.
- 23:43Speaker 2: I mean, and you will always be valid. It's never
- 23:46Speaker 2: going to be higher than the fourth sport here, right,
- 23:49Speaker 2: And I get that, So then that that part of
- 23:51Speaker 2: I agree with. I mean, you're always going to be
- 23:53Speaker 2: fighting the uphill battle just to be the upset special
- 23:56Speaker 2: that you.
- 23:58Speaker 1: And you know in Philly sometimes we like being the underdog.
- 24:02Speaker 1: There's a sport we will perpetually be the underdog game forever, right, Yes,
- 24:07Speaker 1: Jeff Boscher Football at four the Mosher mail bag will
