- 0:15Speaker 1: gut punch for Bengals players, coaches, and fans, a twenty
- 0:19Speaker 1: three all overtime tie in Philadelphia. Coming up, you'll hear
- 0:23Speaker 1: radio replays, postgame comments from players and coaches, and in

- 0:34Speaker 1: under the pads as I visit with rookie called Kareem.
- 0:38Speaker 1: The Bengals Booth Podcast is presented by Prime Sport, the
- 0:42Speaker 1: official hospitality partner of the Cincinnati Bengals. And here's a
- 0:46Speaker 1: quick reminder that you can have the latest edition of
- 0:48Speaker 1: this podcast delivered right to your phone, tablet, or computer
- 0:52Speaker 1: by subscribing on iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play, Spotify, or pod Bean.
- 0:58Speaker 1: It's the greatest thing since Memorable Villains. I've been listening
- 1:04Speaker 1: to the Talking Sopranos podcast lately. In it, actors Michael
- 1:08Speaker 1: Imperioli and Steve Shirippa who played Christopher Moltisanti and Bobby
- 1:13Speaker 1: Bacala on the Sopranos TV series are going back and
- 1:17Speaker 1: doing a deep dive into every episode they've just finished
- 1:21Speaker 1: season two. The podcast comes out once a week, so
- 1:25Speaker 1: I listen to it and then go back and rewatch
- 1:27Speaker 1: the episode in any case. The big villain in season
- 1:31Speaker 1: two is Ritchie Aprile, who is on my short list
- 1:35Speaker 1: of greatest villains in TV history, along with Gus Fring
- 1:39Speaker 1: from Breaking Bad and Ramsey Bolton from Game of Thrones.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Actually about half of the cast of Game of Thrones.
- 1:48Speaker 1: My least favorite villain of all time is Ben Roethlisberger.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Just kidding. Now, let's get to the game. We're going
- 1:58Speaker 1: to do the radio replace a little bit differently this
- 2:00Speaker 1: week and break them down into three categories, the good,
- 2:04Speaker 1: the bad, and the ugly. The good was the Bengals
- 2:09Speaker 1: passing game as Joe Burrow through for three hundred twelve yards,
- 2:12Speaker 1: including a pair of touchdowns to a fellow rookie. Tightly
- 2:16Speaker 1: bunched formation for the Bengals, Burrow fakes a hand off
- 2:19Speaker 1: to Mixon, throws into the end zone, touchdown Tea Higgins
- 2:23Speaker 1: in the back of the end zone, beautifully floated by
- 2:27Speaker 1: Joe Burrow, and the Bengals take the lead with one
- 2:30Speaker 1: twenty nine left in the half, first and goal from
- 2:32Speaker 1: the four. Burrow is under center, takes the snap, fakes
- 2:35Speaker 1: to Mixon looking to throw, throws it into the end zone,
- 2:38Speaker 1: touchdown Tea Higgins his second touchdown catch of the afternoon,
- 2:43Speaker 1: and the Bengals have a chance to regain the lead.
- 2:46Speaker 1: That second touchdown pass put the Bengals in front by
- 2:49Speaker 1: one point in the third quarter, but on the drive
- 2:52Speaker 1: after that, following an interception at the Philadelphia forty four
- 2:56Speaker 1: by Lashawn Simms, the Bengals had a first down at
- 2:58Speaker 1: the Philly thirteen and had to settle for a field goal.
- 3:02Speaker 1: One drive later, they had first and goal at the
- 3:05Speaker 1: four and had to settle for another field goal. Turn
- 3:09Speaker 1: either of those red zone opportunities into a touchdown and
- 3:12Speaker 1: the Bengals almost certainly win the game. Here's Tyler Boyd
- 3:16Speaker 1: who had ten catches for one hundred twenty five yards.
- 3:20Speaker 1: That's not how you're gonna win game, you know, Just
- 3:22Speaker 1: keep driving and driving and getting there, like actually getting
- 3:25Speaker 1: there five yards away, eight years away, ten yards away.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Three point ain't gonna win in this league. Every week
- 3:31Speaker 1: is going to be tough. But whoever found a way
- 3:34Speaker 1: to score touchdown is going to be the team nine win,
- 3:35Speaker 1: and that leads us to the bad. For the most part,
- 3:39Speaker 1: the Bengals defense played well. Philadelphia had thirteen possessions and
- 3:44Speaker 1: only scored two touchdowns, but those tds came in the
- 3:47Speaker 1: final seconds of each half. When the Bengals had the
- 3:51Speaker 1: lead from the twenty nine, Wentz his back to throw
- 3:53Speaker 1: the linebackers back into coverage. The throw caught by a
- 3:56Speaker 1: wide open Ward and he runs into the end zone
- 4:00Speaker 1: with sixteen seconds left in the half. What happened to
- 4:03Speaker 1: the Bengals coverage there? Wentz ready for a shotgun. Snappy
- 4:07Speaker 1: has Miles Sanders to his right, three receivers left, one
- 4:10Speaker 1: out to the right. Wentz has the ball. He's looking
- 4:12Speaker 1: left from the fifty. Under pressure, Wentz now rolling right,
- 4:16Speaker 1: being chased by Hubbard, Wentz will run five pylon touchdown.
- 4:21Speaker 1: The touchdown with sixteen seconds left in the half came
- 4:24Speaker 1: after Randy Bullock hooked to kick off out of bounds
- 4:27Speaker 1: to give Philly the ball at the forty yard line.
- 4:30Speaker 1: The touchdown with twenty one seconds left in regulation to
- 4:33Speaker 1: force overtime came after the Bengals got called for two
- 4:36Speaker 1: pass interference penalties. While trying to cover rookie wide receiver
- 4:41Speaker 1: John high Tower. He entered the game with one catch
- 4:45Speaker 1: from minus two yards, and those penalties added up to
- 4:48Speaker 1: twenty eight yards on Philadelphia's final drive. Each team basically
- 4:53Speaker 1: had three drives in overtime without being able to score,
- 4:56Speaker 1: and the game ended in a twenty three all tie.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Here are Zach Taylor and Joe Burrow. I've never tied
- 5:03Speaker 1: in my life, um so, so it feels strange for sure,
- 5:09Speaker 1: but but I know it sure Zell doesn't feel like
- 5:11Speaker 1: we won. Um that's what. That's what I can't tell you.
- 5:14Speaker 1: And just so many, so many opportunities we had out there. Um,
- 5:17Speaker 1: we just missed that one game breaking play there at
- 5:20Speaker 1: the end, you know. And there were some some things
- 5:22Speaker 1: from both sides, all three phases really that were positive.
- 5:25Speaker 1: There's just no no game changing moment there that took
- 5:27Speaker 1: that game over for us. It'll never be about momentum
- 5:31Speaker 1: or positive experiences to me. I'm about winning. Um, I
- 5:35Speaker 1: expect to win. I know we expect to win. I'm
- 5:39Speaker 1: no moral victories around here. This is a loss to me.
- 5:42Speaker 1: I don't really know. We didn't win, and that leads
- 5:45Speaker 1: to the ugly Burrow waiting for a shotgun snap, has
- 5:48Speaker 1: the ball against the four man rush, gets hit from
- 5:50Speaker 1: behind and its sacked back at Cincinnati's forty eight yard line.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I'm third down at eight. Burrow under pressure and sacked
- 5:57Speaker 1: back at the forty five yard line. Burrow drops back
- 6:00Speaker 1: to throw, try to kill a little bit of time.
- 6:03Speaker 1: He's met in the backfield, and he's sacked. To end
- 6:05Speaker 1: the half, a fake a handoff to Mixing, Burrow pump
- 6:08Speaker 1: fakes and get sacked. He goes down as the safety
- 6:11Speaker 1: Jalen Mills was closing in second and goal from the
- 6:14Speaker 1: eight coming up for Cincinnati. Burrow has Mixing off his
- 6:17Speaker 1: left hip, catches a shotgun snap, drops back to throw,
- 6:20Speaker 1: pocket closes and Joe will be sacked back at the
- 6:23Speaker 1: sixteen yard line. Burrows under center on first and ten,
- 6:26Speaker 1: stomps the right foot, sends Tate in motion behind him.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Burrow fakes a handoff in trouble. Burrow trying to run
- 6:33Speaker 1: and he will be pulled down for a sack in
- 6:35Speaker 1: a one yard loss. First and ten shotgun snap play
- 6:38Speaker 1: action fake Burrow in trouble, sacked by Graham at the
- 6:42Speaker 1: fourteen yard line. One fifty five left in overtime, the
- 6:46Speaker 1: Bengals at their own fourteen. Burrow under pressure sacked by
- 6:49Speaker 1: Fletcher Cox, who beat Billy Price back at the six
- 6:52Speaker 1: yard line. Sack number eight. Yeah, it was ugly, all right.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Eight sacks and ten additional hits for a total of
- 7:00Speaker 1: eighteen QB hits in Joe Burrow's third NFL game. One
- 7:05Speaker 1: particularly vicious hit by Malik Jackson knocked Burrow out of
- 7:08Speaker 1: the game for one play. The wind knocked out on
- 7:11Speaker 1: me for about ten seconds. They told me I had
- 7:13Speaker 1: to go out for play. I was good after that.
- 7:15Speaker 1: He was good after that. But the same can't be
- 7:17Speaker 1: said of the offensive line. Here's Zach Taylor. That's something
- 7:21Speaker 1: we gotta fix right away. And I don't care what
- 7:23Speaker 1: play your call, You're gonna have problems when you just
- 7:25Speaker 1: can't blocking back for a second. And so that that
- 7:28Speaker 1: part is frustrating, you know. So we just got to
- 7:30Speaker 1: continue to prove and give ourself a better chance. The
- 7:32Speaker 1: Bengals made a change up front during the game, as
- 7:35Speaker 1: Fred Johnson, starting his second straight at right guard, got
- 7:38Speaker 1: pulled for Billy Price. Lap asked Zach Taylor about it
- 7:42Speaker 1: after the game, what do you do at the right guard? Position.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Fred struggled. You put Billy in there, Billy struggled. I
- 7:48Speaker 1: mean that's the real problem, Marea. Where do you go
- 7:50Speaker 1: from here? Yeah, we're trying to figure that out, and
- 7:53Speaker 1: that's something to keep evaluating. They had better find an
- 7:55Speaker 1: answer for the offensive line as a whole, because Burrow
- 7:58Speaker 1: has been sacked fourteen time in three games. That's a
- 8:02Speaker 1: pace for seventy four point six sacks. The record for
- 8:06Speaker 1: a quarterback in a single season is seventy six by
- 8:09Speaker 1: Houston's then rookie and number one overall pick, David Carr.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Here's Tyler Boyd. Do you just to see him take
- 8:16Speaker 1: those hits. It's for him to go down and for
- 8:18Speaker 1: him to get injured, no hurt. So it makes me
- 8:20Speaker 1: want to want to fight whoever done anything to him,
- 8:22Speaker 1: you know so. I mean, like I said, we gotta
- 8:25Speaker 1: we gotta figure out way to protect him, and we
- 8:26Speaker 1: gotta figure out way to make tough catches on iron
- 8:28Speaker 1: as well. It would help if they could run the ball.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Joe Mixon finished with forty nine yards on seventeen carries.
- 8:35Speaker 1: That's two point nine per lug. He was greeted in
- 8:39Speaker 1: his own backfield on most of his seventeen attempts. We
- 8:42Speaker 1: knew we were gonna have to get the ball in
- 8:43Speaker 1: permeter against these guys. They gotta really stout front, you know,
- 8:47Speaker 1: as good as we're gonna face this year, you know,
- 8:49Speaker 1: And so they don't make it easier for you to
- 8:51Speaker 1: run the ball. And so again that that's not what
- 8:54Speaker 1: we want from our run game. There's no question about that. Um,
- 8:57Speaker 1: we gotta do better job there. After three games, the
- 9:00Speaker 1: angles are o two and one, where they could be
- 9:03Speaker 1: perhaps even should be two and one, and they have
- 9:06Speaker 1: tied an NFL record they wanted no part of. They
- 9:09Speaker 1: have failed to win their last fifteen games, decided by
- 9:13Speaker 1: one score to tie the all time marks set by
- 9:16Speaker 1: the Chicago Cardinals from nineteen thirty eight to nineteen forty one.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Time for some postgame analysis with my broadcast partner Dave Lapham. Well,
- 9:26Speaker 1: that was different at twenty three all overtime tie in Philadelphia,
- 9:30Speaker 1: a game it felt like like the Bengals had a
- 9:32Speaker 1: million opportunities to win, and as a result, it's a
- 9:36Speaker 1: tie that feels like a loss, no question. I think
- 9:39Speaker 1: both teams feel that way. I don't think both teams
- 9:41Speaker 1: were crisp binding stretch of the imagination and their execution.
- 9:45Speaker 1: I'm not saying that they didn't give effort. You know,
- 9:48Speaker 1: I think both teams, you know, they weren't loafing. They weren't.
- 9:51Speaker 1: It just wasn't that well played. And you know, I
- 9:55Speaker 1: maybe there's a little bit of almost trying too hard,
- 9:59Speaker 1: or or in a situation where I got to make
- 10:03Speaker 1: a play, so I tighten up and grab instead of
- 10:05Speaker 1: trust my technique in coverage, I grab and I have
- 10:08Speaker 1: a you know, a pass interference penalty, or you know,
- 10:12Speaker 1: I just don't run the route the route at the
- 10:14Speaker 1: proper depth, or I don't pass protect and my three
- 10:18Speaker 1: technique the defensive tackle, it's on my outside. Joelda just
- 10:21Speaker 1: blows up the football field like he's a free runner,
- 10:24Speaker 1: and the quarterbacks has no opportunity. I mean again, football
- 10:29Speaker 1: is the ultimate team sport. There's eleven pieces. If you
- 10:32Speaker 1: only have nine or eight operating effectively, you're not going
- 10:36Speaker 1: to get it done. You have to have all eleven
- 10:37Speaker 1: or no more than one mess up. I mean, if ten,
- 10:41Speaker 1: sometimes you can get by, but man, if you have
- 10:44Speaker 1: multiple mess ups on the same play, you're in trouble.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Joe Burrow is sacked eight times. He was hit an
- 10:52Speaker 1: additional ten eighteen hits on your quarterback. Yeah, I think
- 10:58Speaker 1: that's what postgame press conference guys was saying. Eighteen was
- 11:01Speaker 1: the pressure was not the sacks and hits, not just pressures, hits,
- 11:06Speaker 1: actual hits on the quarterback. So again, right guard was
- 11:13Speaker 1: I seventy one. I mean it was there was. They
- 11:17Speaker 1: were in the passing lane on I seventy one, and
- 11:19Speaker 1: there was nothing that was deterring them. Start out with
- 11:22Speaker 1: Fred Johnson at right guard not working out, Billy Price
- 11:25Speaker 1: at right guard didn't work out. I know they've got
- 11:28Speaker 1: Alex Redmon on the practice squad. Dan, I would put
- 11:31Speaker 1: him in there yesterday. Alex Redmond knows, he has an
- 11:35Speaker 1: understanding what they're doing. He's worked next to Bobby Hart,
- 11:38Speaker 1: you know he's he's worked next to Hopkins. It wouldn't
- 11:41Speaker 1: be that tough of a scenario. I know, can they
- 11:44Speaker 1: trust them to stay healthy, That is a big issue.
- 11:47Speaker 1: You know that that trust has to be built up.
- 11:50Speaker 1: But man, telling you the guy from a physical standpoint,
- 11:53Speaker 1: he can play it, he can finish. He's one of
- 11:56Speaker 1: the best finishes in football. I'd give it a shot.
- 11:59Speaker 1: I mean, obviously they're still searching for answers at right guard.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Why not try him as an answer? Yeah, honestly, I
- 12:08Speaker 1: guess I expect that to happen next week against Jacksonville.
- 12:11Speaker 1: In addition to all of the pressure allowed, Joe Mixon
- 12:15Speaker 1: carried seventeen times for forty nine yards, and on nearly
- 12:18Speaker 1: every one of those seventeen carries he's dancing away from
- 12:22Speaker 1: a hit in the backfield. It's going to be unbelievably
- 12:26Speaker 1: frustrating to him. And you know the pin and pull stuff.
- 12:29Speaker 1: I saw quite a bit of that today, but there
- 12:30Speaker 1: was no pinning. You know, the pulling was happening, but
- 12:33Speaker 1: the pullers were getting knocked off at times by penetration.
- 12:36Speaker 1: The pins not pinning people. So, you know, the penetration
- 12:41Speaker 1: in the backfield and Joe Mixon having to make cuts
- 12:44Speaker 1: time after time after time in his own backfield have
- 12:46Speaker 1: to be a big, big source of frustration. I mean,
- 12:49Speaker 1: upfront have to operate at a better level of efficiency.
- 12:54Speaker 1: All five guys, not just every single play. Four happens
- 12:59Speaker 1: doesn't happen, the fifth three happens doesn't happen too. It's
- 13:02Speaker 1: just it's just not going to work. It has to be.
- 13:04Speaker 1: I've said, there's a million times. I'm going to say
- 13:06Speaker 1: it again, it's like a fist. When you make a fist,
- 13:09Speaker 1: there are five components to a fist. Curl your four fingers,
- 13:11Speaker 1: wrap your thumbs. It's like an involuntary reaction. And the
- 13:14Speaker 1: five members of the offensive line are playing together. It's
- 13:16Speaker 1: like making a big, strong fist. If four and you
- 13:19Speaker 1: don't have the fifth, you don't have a fist. You
- 13:21Speaker 1: know it's you're a lot weaker. They have to start
- 13:25Speaker 1: operating and functioning as a group. The Bengals signed a
- 13:29Speaker 1: mid level free agent to help the offensive line, Xaviers
- 13:32Speaker 1: to a Philo. Unfortunately he's injured right now. They didn't
- 13:35Speaker 1: draft an offensive lineman until the sixth round became a
- 13:38Speaker 1: d Energy. I hate to look ahead already to next
- 13:41Speaker 1: year's draft and next year's free agency, but they're going
- 13:44Speaker 1: to have to prioritize whether it's their first draft pick,
- 13:47Speaker 1: whether it's all the money they spend in free agency.
- 13:50Speaker 1: I'm giving Joe Burrow protection no doubt. And you know what,
- 13:55Speaker 1: you don't really want to do this because I know
- 13:57Speaker 1: ad Energy needs some time to develop, but athletically and physically,
- 14:01Speaker 1: from what I saw a training camp, he cuts the
- 14:03Speaker 1: mustard you know, and maybe throw him in the mix.
- 14:06Speaker 1: And in the uncertainty that you know, the equation the
- 14:08Speaker 1: camp he solved at right guard, maybe he's maybe it's
- 14:12Speaker 1: a lot of pressure on a rookie. You know, that's
- 14:14Speaker 1: a six round pick, a rookie offensive lineman who has
- 14:17Speaker 1: played more tackle than Garb. But we played guard at
- 14:20Speaker 1: the Senior Bowl and operated well there against good players.
- 14:23Speaker 1: You know, at this point, absolutely nothing would be off
- 14:27Speaker 1: the table. Nothing would be off the table as far
- 14:29Speaker 1: as I'm concerned, because it's just not happening at that spot.
- 14:33Speaker 1: I went back this week and looked at video of
- 14:35Speaker 1: the last time the Bengals played the Eagles. They beat
- 14:38Speaker 1: Carson Wentz his rookie year. The final score was thirty
- 14:40Speaker 1: two to fourteen. Andy Dalton had a great game that day,
- 14:44Speaker 1: passed for three hundred and thirty two yards pass a
- 14:46Speaker 1: rating of one thirty. And when I watched the video,
- 14:49Speaker 1: the time that he had to throw deep balls was incredible,
- 14:54Speaker 1: time and space pocket was wide, nobody in his face,
- 14:59Speaker 1: and it made me, you realize that when we keep
- 15:01Speaker 1: talking about this stat about burrows, you know, poor passing
- 15:05Speaker 1: completions on throws twenty or more yards down the field.
- 15:08Speaker 1: How many times has he had a ton of time
- 15:11Speaker 1: to throw. I mean there have been times he hasn't
- 15:13Speaker 1: been at but where he was really comfortable back there,
- 15:17Speaker 1: stepping into the throw, not worried about getting a hit
- 15:20Speaker 1: at the end of the play. Not only time, but
- 15:22Speaker 1: like you said, space and vision. If the defensive tackle
- 15:26Speaker 1: is crushing the middle of the pocket every time, you
- 15:29Speaker 1: don't have time to forget trying to find open receivers.
- 15:33Speaker 1: You don't have time to get out of the way.
- 15:35Speaker 1: I mean, you know, at times, it's just it's just
- 15:39Speaker 1: tough to watch. You know, he's he did a piro
- 15:42Speaker 1: Wett out of the pocket, you know, to try to
- 15:45Speaker 1: extend and create a play, and it worked out. All
- 15:47Speaker 1: they nullified it by te Higgins stepping out of bounds
- 15:50Speaker 1: and being the first guy to touch the ball when
- 15:52Speaker 1: he stepped back in. But then he's piro wetting in
- 15:54Speaker 1: the pocket. When you have a quarterback that has to
- 15:57Speaker 1: turn and spend I mean, if he gets hit when
- 16:00Speaker 1: he's got a right leg planted in the ground, pirouetting
- 16:03Speaker 1: or whatever, and he gets hit in the lower leg,
- 16:05Speaker 1: it's acl you know, it's like shredding ligaments. I mean,
- 16:09Speaker 1: that stuff scares the crap out of me. I mean,
- 16:11Speaker 1: they're more he's more vulnerable there in that pocket trying
- 16:14Speaker 1: to do some of the things he's doing to avoid
- 16:16Speaker 1: contact than he is outside in space, and it's starting
- 16:20Speaker 1: to really be scary. You don't want guys at your feet.
- 16:23Speaker 1: You don't want guys. I mean, I'm if I'm a quarterback.
- 16:25Speaker 1: The way this pocket is collapsing in the middle. When
- 16:28Speaker 1: you throw the football and you follow through, you don't
- 16:30Speaker 1: want to hit a shoulder, padd a helmet and break
- 16:32Speaker 1: your finger, break your hand. We don't ask Kenny Anderson
- 16:34Speaker 1: one year by that happening. You're throwing a football and
- 16:37Speaker 1: he follows through in a preseason game and he clips
- 16:40Speaker 1: his index finger, you know, on a helmet and is
- 16:43Speaker 1: done for you know, the first six weeks of the
- 16:45Speaker 1: season whatever, and we're done. You don't want to see
- 16:49Speaker 1: that happen, you know, because somebody just gives up too
- 16:52Speaker 1: much penetration in the pocket. I mean, that's the first step.
- 16:58Speaker 1: The first step is solidifying the interior of the pocket.
- 17:01Speaker 1: You know. Look, I'm not saying that it's perfect. Jonah
- 17:04Speaker 1: Williams got beaten early. He got beaten badly, quickly, and left.
- 17:07Speaker 1: But he was fine the rest of the game. And
- 17:09Speaker 1: that's what you want to see. You want to see
- 17:10Speaker 1: a guy compartmentalized. Okay, what did I do wrong? Yep,
- 17:13Speaker 1: I leaned my head. I ducked my head. I leaned forward.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Trouble didn't do it again rest of the game. Man, inside,
- 17:21Speaker 1: it's like, okay, let's pull this guy. Try this guy.
- 17:25Speaker 1: And as a coach, it's got to be, you know,
- 17:29Speaker 1: disturbing to say the least. I mean, you're trying to
- 17:31Speaker 1: find an answer. You're scrambling to find an answer, and
- 17:33Speaker 1: there's no answer at this point to be found. That's
- 17:35Speaker 1: why I think, Man, I have a feeling, that's why
- 17:38Speaker 1: Redman's back. Redman's on the practice squad. Redman could be,
- 17:42Speaker 1: you know, elevated quickly, quickly. Let's run down some of
- 17:46Speaker 1: the blown opportunities in this game. Eagles first possession, the
- 17:50Speaker 1: Bengals come up with an interception Logan Wilson off the
- 17:52Speaker 1: tip ball by DJ Reader. Bengals start at their own
- 17:55Speaker 1: forty four three and out, get nothing to the second quarter,
- 18:00Speaker 1: like zerk Son with a nice punt return fifteen yard
- 18:02Speaker 1: penalty at the end of the return. They start at
- 18:04Speaker 1: the Philly thirty eight, don't even pick up a first down,
- 18:07Speaker 1: settle for a forty eight yard field goal. Then once
- 18:11Speaker 1: they started moving the ball in the second half, first
- 18:15Speaker 1: down and ten at the thirteen yard line, have to
- 18:18Speaker 1: kick a field goal. First down and goal at the
- 18:20Speaker 1: four yard line, five yard penalty from there, wind up
- 18:24Speaker 1: kicking a field goal. And that's the game. I mean,
- 18:26Speaker 1: when you have that many opportunities, even either close to
- 18:29Speaker 1: midfield or first in goal or first and ten inside
- 18:33Speaker 1: the red zone, you can't come away with three or
- 18:35Speaker 1: nothing and win, no question about it. Ball game. You know,
- 18:39Speaker 1: case closed. And when the Eagles at the end of
- 18:43Speaker 1: the first half had an opportunity in drove and getting
- 18:46Speaker 1: the red zone touchdown at the end of the football game,
- 18:49Speaker 1: when they drove getting the red zone, had to have
- 18:50Speaker 1: a touchdown. The Bengals lost this game in the red zone.
- 18:56Speaker 1: I know it's a tie, but they should have won
- 18:58Speaker 1: the football game. They didn't get a win, get a loss.
- 19:00Speaker 1: They did not get the win though because of the
- 19:02Speaker 1: red zone. The red zone failures negated the turnover. And
- 19:06Speaker 1: you know, to me, this turnover stuff is starting to
- 19:09Speaker 1: get old because the Cincinnati Bengals with this turnover ratio stuff.
- 19:12Speaker 1: It's it's it's it's almost mind boggling, Dan. I mean,
- 19:16Speaker 1: their their their numbers. Uh. In the red zone situation,
- 19:21Speaker 1: it's crazy. They're like, oh and eight when it's when
- 19:24Speaker 1: it's negative. I do know that. I think they're one
- 19:26Speaker 1: in twelve. Now for the turnover margins when turnover margin
- 19:29Speaker 1: when it's plus, they're one in twelve when it's plus.
- 19:32Speaker 1: So they keep saying, when the turnover ratio and win
- 19:35Speaker 1: the game, what the hell one in twelve? I mean,
- 19:39Speaker 1: come on, man, you know when they won one game
- 19:41Speaker 1: when it was even and oh and eight when it's
- 19:43Speaker 1: when it's minus turnovers, it's almost like it's inconsequential to
- 19:47Speaker 1: the outcome of the football game. Now, league wide it's
- 19:51Speaker 1: very consequential, but to this football team, it hasn't been whatsoever. Now,
- 19:56Speaker 1: now you had to tie to that mix, you win
- 19:58Speaker 1: the turnover battle, You're won eleven and one who raise
- 20:02Speaker 1: the flag? All right? Realistically, tying is better than losing.
- 20:08Speaker 1: It doesn't feel like it right now, but it is
- 20:10Speaker 1: better than taking a loss. And for that reason, I
- 20:12Speaker 1: will at least give the defense credit for the very
- 20:16Speaker 1: end of the game, because they've got to be demoralized.
- 20:19Speaker 1: At that point, Joe Burrow just got sacked deep in
- 20:21Speaker 1: his own territory. Philly gets the ball back at their
- 20:24Speaker 1: own forty four, with one twenty six to go and
- 20:27Speaker 1: with a chance to move within the field goal range
- 20:29Speaker 1: of one of the strongest leg kickers in the NFL.
- 20:32Speaker 1: They get the stop. They force a five yard penalty.
- 20:35Speaker 1: When Philly lined up to try a fifty nine yard
- 20:37Speaker 1: field goal and then sixty four yards away, they elected
- 20:41Speaker 1: to punt. Yep said, I'll kiss the sister. Get those
- 20:48Speaker 1: lips ready, put on some lip bomb. I want that
- 20:51Speaker 1: kiss to be right. But I mean, you know, it's
- 20:54Speaker 1: it's like, you know, and Dan, I've experienced this as
- 20:58Speaker 1: a player. I remember going on to start a season
- 21:01Speaker 1: and we're, you know, just close in some games we
- 21:04Speaker 1: can't finish, just can't finish. We start O and eight
- 21:07Speaker 1: and we're getting killed, getting killed by media friends, I mean,
- 21:10Speaker 1: my neighbors. I'm driving the neighborhood with my lights out.
- 21:13Speaker 1: Didn't want to see neighbors at night, you know. And
- 21:15Speaker 1: I didn't go to the grocery store, didn't go anywhere.
- 21:18Speaker 1: So I know what it's like, and I hate to
- 21:20Speaker 1: be a guy that's like, you know, negative about it.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Because I've experienced it, I know how bad it is,
- 21:25Speaker 1: and I feel badly, but you know it's your job
- 21:27Speaker 1: to do with the analysis and all that, and I'm
- 21:29Speaker 1: not gonna. I am not going to question the effort.
- 21:32Speaker 1: I'm not gonna whatsoever. And in our own eight start,
- 21:35Speaker 1: I questioned the effort some of my teammates and you know,
- 21:39Speaker 1: the eye and this guy don't lie, and there were
- 21:41Speaker 1: guys dogging it, loafing, don't see that. I mean, the
- 21:44Speaker 1: efforts there, it's just not coming together. So I feel
- 21:48Speaker 1: terrible that I'm like banging on them, you know, for
- 21:50Speaker 1: not finishing and winning close. Because I've been there, I
- 21:53Speaker 1: know exactly what they feel like. I remember many times
- 21:57Speaker 1: sitting it, laying in my bed looking at the ceiling,
- 22:00Speaker 1: and it's like a big movie screen and I'm seeing
- 22:03Speaker 1: plays over and over and over again in my mind,
- 22:05Speaker 1: and it's like, oh, damn, if I had just done this,
- 22:08Speaker 1: if so and so had just done that, if somebody
- 22:10Speaker 1: had just done this, And I know what it's like.
- 22:12Speaker 1: I know, I've I remember losing sleep about it. I
- 22:15Speaker 1: remember it takes your appetite all those things, you know,
- 22:18Speaker 1: and people say, ah, you know what are you You're
- 22:20Speaker 1: making your money. It's not that it's it's personal pride.
- 22:23Speaker 1: It's like, you play the game to win the game.
- 22:25Speaker 1: You don't play the game to lose and tie football games. So,
- 22:30Speaker 1: you know, I don't want to be hypocritical. I don't
- 22:32Speaker 1: want to be two faced, but you know, I have
- 22:35Speaker 1: to do a job, and you have to give reasons
- 22:37Speaker 1: why things are turning out the way they're turning out.
- 22:40Speaker 1: But man, my heart bleeds for the guys, it really does.
- 22:42Speaker 1: It sucks big time. Capital letters sucks. You know. The
- 22:47Speaker 1: only you don't have any friends. All you got your family,
- 22:50Speaker 1: and sometimes, you know, you come home and try to
- 22:52Speaker 1: kiss your wife and it was easier kissing the opponent
- 22:55Speaker 1: when you tie them an indictment of land lap them
- 23:00Speaker 1: many years after the fact. No, No, she was great.
- 23:02Speaker 1: I'm just kidding. She was a Lynn was Lynn might
- 23:05Speaker 1: have been the best, the best athlete wife that ever
- 23:09Speaker 1: has been created. Remove the mic. Yeah she is, no question.
- 23:13Speaker 1: But honestly, I remember my kids. I remember my son
- 23:15Speaker 1: coming home and kids at school are saying, you know,
- 23:18Speaker 1: the Bengals suck. Your dad sucks, you know, And I'm
- 23:20Speaker 1: like Dave don't fight those guys, you know, let it go,
- 23:24Speaker 1: you know, and he's all concerned, he's all shaken up
- 23:26Speaker 1: about that. Stuff sucks when it starts affecting your family
- 23:29Speaker 1: and everything. I've been there, I know exactly what it's like.
- 23:31Speaker 1: I feel terrible for guys. I mean, right now, they're
- 23:35Speaker 1: three twenty three and one in their last twenty seven games.
- 23:39Speaker 1: That does not make it an easy life to live
- 23:43Speaker 1: off the football field. You got nobody to blame but
- 23:46Speaker 1: yourself as a team, and the only thing you can
- 23:47Speaker 1: do is try to make more plays and do something
- 23:50Speaker 1: about it. But I'm telling you, it sucks. I think
- 23:53Speaker 1: that's a good way to end it. We'll look forward
- 23:55Speaker 1: to Jacksonville in a few days. I hear that if
- 23:59Speaker 1: they play just a little bit better, take advantage of
- 24:02Speaker 1: a couple of the opportunities that they didn't take advantage
- 24:05Speaker 1: of today. You know, Jacksonville's no world beater, but it
- 24:09Speaker 1: is disappointing. Dan. The Philadelphia goes, what did they have left?
- 24:12Speaker 1: What did they have? I was waiting for Vince Papali
- 24:15Speaker 1: to come off the sideline with a band aid over's nose,
- 24:18Speaker 1: you know, some tape and Vince Papali come running down there,
- 24:20Speaker 1: cover some kicks and went, I mean they were down
- 24:22Speaker 1: to nothing. They were down to nothing. Unbelievable. As Lap mentioned,
- 24:28Speaker 1: a home game against Jacksonville is coming up next. The
- 24:31Speaker 1: Jaguars are one and two and coming off an eighteen
- 24:34Speaker 1: point lost to Miami last Thursday. Let's end on a
- 24:38Speaker 1: positive note with this week's fun Facts segment as we
- 24:41Speaker 1: get to know the person under the pads from a
- 24:44Speaker 1: member of this year's rookie class. Time for some fun facts.
- 24:47Speaker 1: The Bengals defensive end College Kareem College. You are a
- 24:51Speaker 1: coach's kid, and said, Juan said, you and your dad
- 24:54Speaker 1: started your football journey together when you were six years old.
- 24:58Speaker 1: How did that journey begin? My dad, he was he
- 25:01Speaker 1: was just actually just a parent at first, just I
- 25:03Speaker 1: mean obviously just a parent, more so just a parent watching.
- 25:07Speaker 1: And then I think something happened with our defensive coordinator,
- 25:11Speaker 1: and um, they were like, you know, as any parent
- 25:15Speaker 1: willing to step up to, you know, help coach. And
- 25:17Speaker 1: you know he was the first one and even my coach.
- 25:19Speaker 1: Ever since. Were you focused on football or did you
- 25:22Speaker 1: try a wide variety of sports when you were growing up?
- 25:25Speaker 1: I definitely focused heavily on football, played basketball up until
- 25:29Speaker 1: I was a sophomore in high school. I tried wrestling
- 25:33Speaker 1: for a season in middle school and didn't go that well.
- 25:36Speaker 1: I tried baseball that definitely did not go well. I
- 25:40Speaker 1: went to I went to one practice and the coach
- 25:44Speaker 1: told me I was too uncordinated. So I never I
- 25:46Speaker 1: never came back. And then I tried swimming for I
- 25:52Speaker 1: did swimming for a season. I'm okay. The biggest thing
- 25:55Speaker 1: with that was that I was always going from swimming
- 25:59Speaker 1: practice football practice, and so I was always tired of
- 26:02Speaker 1: that football. So I kind of gave up one swimming.
- 26:05Speaker 1: And then last thing I did I threw shot putting
- 26:08Speaker 1: discus in high school. We're doing fun facts with college Kareem.
- 26:11Speaker 1: In addition to being an excellent athlete, you have excelled
- 26:14Speaker 1: in school. Were you forced too or were you self
- 26:17Speaker 1: motivated a little bit of both, but mainly the latter part.
- 26:21Speaker 1: I mean, my parents definitely, you know, just kept high
- 26:23Speaker 1: standard as far as academics, but I mean the kind
- 26:27Speaker 1: of just set that standard, and then you know, I
- 26:29Speaker 1: kind of just embodied that after after that fact that
- 26:32Speaker 1: ody high school unacceptable for me to get below my
- 26:37Speaker 1: A and then I got the high school money. You
- 26:38Speaker 1: know what, It's okay, Like the world's not gonna end,
- 26:41Speaker 1: like I think, I graduated like a three eight five,
- 26:44Speaker 1: so I was still I was still okay. I was
- 26:45Speaker 1: still good. So you almost went to Alabama and ultimately
- 26:50Speaker 1: chose Notre Dame. Why, I mean, just looking at it,
- 26:53Speaker 1: I mean, Bama is like I think, thirteen hours away
- 26:56Speaker 1: from home, and you know, I come up from a
- 26:59Speaker 1: pretty nice size family, so it would kind of be
- 27:01Speaker 1: a little expensive for them to come and see me,
- 27:04Speaker 1: you know, play or just you know, even playing a visit,
- 27:06Speaker 1: just to come down, like you know, if they you know,
- 27:08Speaker 1: messed me and they want to come see me. But
- 27:10Speaker 1: Notre Dame. Notre Dame is only three hours away. For
- 27:13Speaker 1: one A great academic is great football, And it was
- 27:16Speaker 1: you know, far enough from home where I had my
- 27:18Speaker 1: own independence, but close enough. You know, I fundy and
- 27:21Speaker 1: my family and they'll be there for me. We're chatting
- 27:24Speaker 1: with Colin Kareem. You skipped the end of your senior
- 27:26Speaker 1: year of high school and enrolled early in Notre Dame.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Are you happy you did that? Yeah? I mean I
- 27:32Speaker 1: was just having a conversation something about that the other day.
- 27:36Speaker 1: I mean, you know, I finished my so I played
- 27:40Speaker 1: my senior season, but you know, following that, that last semester. Um. Yeah,
- 27:45Speaker 1: so I left following that semester. I mean I felt
- 27:48Speaker 1: like I didn't have really anything left to you know,
- 27:51Speaker 1: give high school. I was already done with all my
- 27:52Speaker 1: academic classes. So I would kind of not really just
- 27:55Speaker 1: taking up space, but I feel like I would kind
- 27:57Speaker 1: of be just you know, wasting my time when I
- 27:59Speaker 1: could be doing something, you know, more productive Towards my career.
- 28:02Speaker 1: There are some great game day traditions and Notre Dame.
- 28:06Speaker 1: What was your favorite? I probasedly the walk Honestly, when
- 28:09Speaker 1: I was when I was a freshman, I'm like, you know,
- 28:11Speaker 1: I'm always gonna have these, so not really you know,
- 28:14Speaker 1: two pressed about it. But my senior year, I really,
- 28:17Speaker 1: you know, took the time to take everything and you know,
- 28:20Speaker 1: the smells, the sounds, you know, everyone's faces. So I
- 28:23Speaker 1: mean that was that was pretty big for me. Do
- 28:25Speaker 1: you have a miniature play like a champion sign somewhere? No,
- 28:29Speaker 1: but I need to get one. So early November your
- 28:33Speaker 1: senior year, you tore the labor I'm in your shoulder. Yeah,
- 28:37Speaker 1: you kept playing, you played the final four games of
- 28:39Speaker 1: the season. With that, how bad was the pain and
- 28:42Speaker 1: why did you keep playing? Pain was definitely up there,
- 28:45Speaker 1: like skilled on one to ten at its worst during
- 28:48Speaker 1: the games um like Boston College, it was really bad.
- 28:52Speaker 1: It's like an eight point five nine almost definitely felt
- 28:56Speaker 1: like about to fall off. But you know, for one,
- 28:59Speaker 1: I didn't no, I didn't know I threw my labor
- 29:01Speaker 1: at first, so I didn't know until after Stanford. So
- 29:06Speaker 1: after so probably about three weeks after I toured, that's
- 29:08Speaker 1: when I found out. And then you know, I had
- 29:11Speaker 1: one game left and I was like, you know, I've
- 29:14Speaker 1: come this far, and I played on it, you know,
- 29:16Speaker 1: for you know, result for these past the weeks, and
- 29:18Speaker 1: I didn't know. After talking you know with the doctors
- 29:21Speaker 1: and you know, the trainer, They're like, theres, you can't
- 29:23Speaker 1: make it worse. I'm like, okay, I might as well play,
- 29:25Speaker 1: Like this is my last college game. I get to
- 29:28Speaker 1: go out, you know with my guys. And so I
- 29:30Speaker 1: still felt like, you know, I had something left in
- 29:31Speaker 1: the tank, and I don't think I could you know,
- 29:33Speaker 1: look myself in the mirror and at the end of
- 29:35Speaker 1: the day knowing, you know, I had something left and
- 29:37Speaker 1: didn't give it to my team. We're chatting with college Kareem.
- 29:40Speaker 1: You majored in business, minored into art combined the two,
- 29:45Speaker 1: and you have an art dealer. Could you see yourself
- 29:48Speaker 1: buying and selling arts some day? Yeah, definitely, definitely, definitely
- 29:52Speaker 1: can see that. I mean, I want to try to
- 29:54Speaker 1: start that, you know, sometimes soon, probably within like the
- 29:57Speaker 1: next you know, two years on. I started trying to
- 29:59Speaker 1: get more into that, and then you know, I start
- 30:02Speaker 1: getting you know, the front of my career. I start
- 30:03Speaker 1: I want to start, you know, doing more with that,
- 30:05Speaker 1: and then you know what, I'm done, do that full time.
- 30:07Speaker 1: Are there any artists in particular that you would like
- 30:09Speaker 1: to purchase a piece of their work? Keep Harry Definitely, definitely,
- 30:13Speaker 1: He's one of my favorites. Um to second contract, Yeah definitely. Yeah,
- 30:21Speaker 1: well yeah, definitely definitely I want to keep harrying piece.
- 30:24Speaker 1: As part of your senior art project of Notre Dame,
- 30:27Speaker 1: you did a huge self portrait in a pop art style,
- 30:30Speaker 1: four feet by five feet. I've seen a picture of it.
- 30:33Speaker 1: It's pretty spectacular. You are in the middle kind of
- 30:36Speaker 1: an action shot from your Notre Dame playing day, surrounded
- 30:39Speaker 1: by bright pop culture pictures and then images around it.
- 30:44Speaker 1: How did you feel that turned out. I was happy
- 30:47Speaker 1: with it. I mean it's not really for anyone else
- 30:50Speaker 1: but me, so, I mean that's not pretty selfish, but
- 30:54Speaker 1: I mean I made it a kind of commemorate my
- 30:56Speaker 1: experience at Notre Dame and you know who makes like
- 30:59Speaker 1: what makes me so? Like in the background on one side,
- 31:02Speaker 1: it's a scarpet of my mom, you know, has had
- 31:04Speaker 1: I think before we were like before us kids were
- 31:07Speaker 1: even born. Then a pattern of the time my dad game.
- 31:11Speaker 1: He's on the left as you're looking at yeah, on
- 31:13Speaker 1: the left, and then a bunch of different you know,
- 31:16Speaker 1: characters and you know, a little things that you know,
- 31:18Speaker 1: mean a lot to me. Like I said, I thought
- 31:20Speaker 1: it was pretty spectacular. But I do have one issue
- 31:22Speaker 1: with it. What's up with the Baltimore Ravens logo? Okay,
- 31:26Speaker 1: so it's not a Baltimore's Ravens logo? Okay, So my
- 31:31Speaker 1: literally team was the south Field Ravens, so that was
- 31:34Speaker 1: that's what it was for. Yeah, I feel much better
- 31:37Speaker 1: about it now. Yeah, we're chatting with Colin Kareem. I
- 31:42Speaker 1: know the game on game day, you covered your face
- 31:45Speaker 1: and eye black similar to Hall of Famer John Randall.
- 31:49Speaker 1: Why and do you plan to continue doing that in
- 31:52Speaker 1: the NFL? Yeah, definitely continue. I don't want to continue
- 31:56Speaker 1: doing that NFL. But I feel like that's just like
- 31:58Speaker 1: you know, my different person out. Like I put the
- 32:00Speaker 1: you know, base paint on it, it's just you know,
- 32:03Speaker 1: I'm turning to a you know, a different beast, and
- 32:05Speaker 1: so like like at that point, like once I put
- 32:07Speaker 1: it on, I've already I usually already have my pads on,
- 32:10Speaker 1: already taped up. So that's like, you know, my final
- 32:13Speaker 1: stuff in my preparation before you know it's tigned to play.
- 32:15Speaker 1: So like that's kind of like the the final thing
- 32:18Speaker 1: before you know, I'm like ready to go. So that
- 32:21Speaker 1: really gives me my game mode. Is it a pain
- 32:24Speaker 1: in the neck to put on it off on? No? Yes, yes,
- 32:28Speaker 1: it takes. It takes a while. I mean because I
- 32:31Speaker 1: watched my face my face pretty thoroughly, and then like
- 32:34Speaker 1: the next day I'll still have like five blacks on
- 32:36Speaker 1: one of that. I thought, you know, I cleaned, but
- 32:38Speaker 1: it wasn't describe your draft. That experience. It was a
- 32:41Speaker 1: good experience. I mean I thought I would go somewhere,
- 32:44Speaker 1: you know, Day two but you know, I wasn't you know,
- 32:47Speaker 1: two upsets. I knew you know, either way, you know,
- 32:49Speaker 1: whether you know I got drafted or I was a
- 32:51Speaker 1: free agent, I was going to make an impact wherever
- 32:53Speaker 1: I went, so I wasn't too stressed about it. You're
- 32:56Speaker 1: from the Detroit area. Who is your favorite athlete growing up?
- 33:00Speaker 1: Ben Wallace? Ben Wallace, Oh, my guy. I love watching
- 33:04Speaker 1: him play pistons, do the dirty work guy. Yeah, definitely,
- 33:09Speaker 1: And honestly, when I played basketball, I try to play
- 33:12Speaker 1: like him. Definitely did have the skill set like him,
- 33:15Speaker 1: but the physicality was there. So at this early stage
- 33:19Speaker 1: of your NFL career, what are some of the things
- 33:22Speaker 1: you are enjoying about being a professional athlete? I said,
- 33:26Speaker 1: The biggest thing I'm enjoying is just, you know, learning
- 33:28Speaker 1: from the vets and just having the you know, the
- 33:31Speaker 1: older guys and the like I said, the vet them
- 33:34Speaker 1: pushing me just to be better because you're at a
- 33:36Speaker 1: level excuse me, where everyone's the best, and so it
- 33:39Speaker 1: only forced your game to excel. And that's probably the
- 33:43Speaker 1: most fun thing about this whole experience. He wrote a
- 33:46Speaker 1: book in third grade. Yeah, it made an interesting prediction.
- 33:51Speaker 1: What did you predict? At that age, I predicted that
- 33:55Speaker 1: I would be in the NFL at that time, well,
- 33:58Speaker 1: at this time and the Super Bowl sixty I was
- 34:01Speaker 1: gonna win MVP. I don't know. I don't know how
- 34:04Speaker 1: I figured out the timing and how it lined up,
- 34:07Speaker 1: but it's actually obtainable. It's kind of cool. So super
- 34:11Speaker 1: Bowl sixty would be February of twenty twenty three. That
- 34:15Speaker 1: would be your third NFL season. So third grade, you
- 34:19Speaker 1: did some excellent math. Yeah, and this is legitimately possible. Yeah,
- 34:26Speaker 1: definitely is definitely. I want to definitely want to try
- 34:29Speaker 1: to make it happen. All right, you are off the
- 34:32Speaker 1: hot seat. I appreciate you doing this. Yeah, no problem.
- 34:37Speaker 1: Thanks to college Kareem. And here's a quick reminder to
- 34:39Speaker 1: join Lap and Lance McAlister for Bengals Line Monday night
