- 0:06Hello, what's your least favorite scary movie?
- 0:11You keep dancing with the devil. One day he's going to follow you
- 0:14home, boy. Welcome.
- 0:16What's your least favorite scary movie?
- 0:17The podcast where we talk about the good, the bad, the ugly and
- 0:20the absurd and all of our favorites.
- 0:21And least. Favorite scary movies?
- 0:23Because we believe every horror movie rifely has is fanbase
- 0:25even. If we don't, I always get it.
- 0:27My name's Travis. My name's Jesse.
- 0:28And welcome everybody, we are doing our Patreon voted episode
- 0:32this week on the show and we asked you guys, you guys told us
- 0:36you want us to talk about sinners so.
- 0:38It was actually a tie and Talia was the tiebreaker.
- 0:41That's true, I forgot about that.
- 0:42I want everybody to know because I was really proud of the
- 0:45tiebreaker I came up with because it was between us or
- 0:47heretic. Yeah.
- 0:48So Talia had. We threw her toys.
- 0:51Same time, same distance, same location, there was the bottle
- 0:55of Maker's bark, representing sinners.
- 0:58Which is bourbon. And there was the Pappuccino
- 1:02representing heretic. Yeah, which is, you know,
- 1:04caffeine for the Mormons and bourbon for the sinners.
- 1:07Yeah, yeah, yeah. And we did.
- 1:10Yeah. Well, she obviously went for the
- 1:11bourbon because she's from Kentucky, so.
- 1:13Yeah, she's a she's a true Kentucky girl.
- 1:16That's true. So yeah, here we are talking
- 1:17about sinners this week. But before we get into the nitty
- 1:22gritty of it all, do you have anything you need to announce?
- 1:25We did To Be or Not to Be. This past weekend we talked
- 1:27about Talent Falls, a movie in Kentucky.
- 1:30Yep, Yeah. For Kentuckians about a scare,
- 1:36scare haunt attraction. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:38It's a fun little time. I think we had a good time on
- 1:41that one. If you are interested, go check
- 1:43it out. Yeah.
- 1:45It we got weird. There's just like weird, good
- 1:47weird. Yeah, it was kind of weird.
- 1:49It was fun. I had a good time with it.
- 1:50Yeah. So yeah, go check that out.
- 1:52It was our two year not to be so most recent episode before this
- 1:55one. Yeah.
- 1:56And if anybody wants to invest in our hospital hibachi idea,
- 2:00just let. Us know we're open to investors.
- 2:03Yeah, we're taking offers. That's right, it's already
- 2:05publicly traded. Yeah, I already had its IPO.
- 2:08Exactly. So we didn't do a poll.
- 2:11We forgot to do a poll for last week's movie, which was Vacancy.
- 2:17So Vacancy, sorry, I forgot what it was called for a second
- 2:20there. But yeah, we we didn't do one.
- 2:22I apologize for that. But it's OK.
- 2:25We got centers here. We got a lot of stuff to get
- 2:27into. So that's more time to talk
- 2:29about the movie at hand, which I suppose it's time for us to get
- 2:33into now. I am very excited to talk about
- 2:35this. Maybe please give me some
- 2:36background information and then we will share opinions.
- 2:39OK, well, since you asked so nicely, I'll go ahead and get
- 2:41into it. So Sooner is released April
- 2:4418th, 2025. We watched it on HBO, which is
- 2:48the only place you can watch it if you want to stream it on a
- 2:51streaming service. But if you would rather rent it,
- 2:54you can rent it on Amazon, Apple TV or Fandango at home.
- 2:57OK. Written and directed by Ryan
- 3:00Coogler, music by Ludwig Gorenson, and special effects
- 3:04make up by a lot of fucking people and I will get into that
- 3:08here in a little bit. I.
- 3:09Think they had to do quite a bit.
- 3:10Yeah, starring Miles Cadden as Sammy, Michael B Jordan as Smoke
- 3:15and Stack, Jack O'Connell as Remic, Hailee Steinfeld as Mary
- 3:20Delroy, Lindo as Delta Slim, Wunmi Masaka as Annie, Omar
- 3:26Benson Miller as Cornbread, Jamie Lawson as Pearlene, Yao as
- 3:30Bo. Just they didn't get a last name
- 3:33for it. It's just Yao.
- 3:34Legion Lee as Grace Peter, dramas as Bert and Lola, Kirk as
- 3:39Joan, Jesse. Time for our favorite game on
- 3:42the show. Budget or budget I feel.
- 3:46Like this is budget. Oh God, yes, this is budget.
- 3:50This may be one of the biggest budgets we've had on this.
- 3:53It was $90 million. Wow, I was going to say we've
- 3:57had Shyamalan, but yeah, Dang, 90 million. 90 million for now,
- 4:03it went up to 100 million allegedly.
- 4:07So this is a triple figure budget right here for that.
- 4:11They're actually more than triple figure.
- 4:12Obviously it's $100 million opening box office 48 million
- 4:19worldwide gross 366 million IMDb scores 7.6.
- 4:24OK. Really, really solid.
- 4:27So I have a theme and I am excited for this one because
- 4:31it's 2025 movies, obviously, and I've wanted to do this for a
- 4:36long time. And I finally have a haiku.
- 4:39Oh my. God, I'm so happy.
- 4:41That's right. So I'm going to go ahead and
- 4:43just read all three movies at once and then I'll get the
- 4:45details for them individually. But here's the haiku, and I feel
- 4:48like it actually is appropriate. Home sweet Home Rebirth, my
- 4:52daughter is a zombie Garden of Eden.
- 5:00Thank you for the snap. So it doesn't feel appropriate
- 5:02for them. OK, And I put it through a
- 5:06fucking checker. OK.
- 5:07That was 575 right there. Good job.
- 5:10Thank you. Thank you. 17 syllables.
- 5:12You have made your own dream come true.
- 5:14Thank you. Thank you.
- 5:15I've worked every single time I try and do three years.
- 5:18Yes, we got 2025 given it's. Your year, everything's coming
- 5:24up Mill House. That's right.
- 5:26So movie #1 Home Sweet Home Rebirth that released May 8th
- 5:312025 don't have the budgets. The worldwide gross was
- 5:35$245,000. IMDb score 4.3.
- 5:40I don't know anything about these movies by.
- 5:41The way anything about it, me neither.
- 5:43You. Were just looking at the
- 5:44syllables. That's all I needed.
- 5:46It took a couple. I almost worked Final
- 5:48Destination in there. Almost.
- 5:50It didn't happen, unfortunately. It was 8 syllables.
- 5:53Yeah, I was just sitting here counting it.
- 5:54Yeah. 2nd movie My Daughter is a Zombie that released July 30th
- 6:002025. Don't have budget but MA $37
- 6:03million. It's a Korean movie, that's
- 6:06probably why we're less familiar with it, but it's a 7 out of 10
- 6:09on IMDb so it apparently did pretty well.
- 6:12OK Final movie Garden of Eden released June 20th 2025.
- 6:16Don't have any financials and the IMDb is a 4.6 all right tag
- 6:26lines the. We.
- 6:28Have multiple? We do.
- 6:29We have three. The one on the poster probably
- 6:31my favorite. Dance with the devil.
- 6:34Yeah, I mean under the pale moonlight even.
- 6:38Perhaps. Yeah, Dark, dark there.
- 6:40It's dark, dark. It was dark, dark during the
- 6:44survey. It was.
- 6:45It was night time. That was when vampires come.
- 6:47Out you need to know about Dark Dark.
- 6:48Go listen to R2V or not to be episode.
- 6:50OK, well, let us know when you think dark Dark occurs, yeah.
- 6:54Second one, we are all sinners. Yeah, it's OK.
- 6:58Final one, it's going to be a real ring.
- 7:00A Ding, Ding. Ring a Ding Ding.
- 7:04Ring a Ding Ding. I don't that feels like one of
- 7:07the dumb ones that we would have made.
- 7:08On yeah it it feels like a joke 1 I don't understand or a penny
- 7:11one. Not a joke one, but.
- 7:13They chose the the best one for sure for the Yeah dance with the
- 7:16Devil. That's by far the best one.
- 7:18They have him. OK, so let's do some fun facts.
- 7:21OK, so sinners, there was a bidding war for this movie
- 7:26whenever it was originally pitched back in 2024.
- 7:31It was between Sony, Warner Bros and Universal Pictures.
- 7:34One of Ryan Coogler's requests was for first dollar gross final
- 7:40cut privilege and he wanted to have ownership of the film 25
- 7:44years after the release. The only studio that was willing
- 7:48to go with these these demands was Warner Bros.
- 7:51So that's why Warner Bros got the movie OK.
- 7:53Which I think that's cool. The fact that he'll get to own
- 7:56the full movie after 25. Years.
- 7:58I'm glad he took ownership. He made that part of his
- 8:00contract. Yeah, and final cut privilege,
- 8:02that's like a big deal you. Know that way.
- 8:04You like, were you getting the director's cut?
- 8:06Yes, instead of the studio coming in and being like, but
- 8:10people like this better because Can you imagine what Warner Bros
- 8:13might have decided would be a better ending to this?
- 8:16Yeah, exactly. This one right there.
- 8:17I think that this movie, like, let the creative do their thing,
- 8:21you know, like they knew what they were doing here.
- 8:24This is weird. Machine Gun Kelly was originally
- 8:27offered the chance to audition for Bert.
- 8:29You know, the the white supremacist that gets turned
- 8:32into a a vampire by Remic. Yeah.
- 8:36However, he declined because he was not comfortable using slurs.
- 8:41I get that. Yeah, that's another.
- 8:43That's the thing I think about with people in period pieces
- 8:45like this or just like if you are playing a racist character,
- 8:48like, I don't know. I don't know if I would feel
- 8:51comfortable doing anything like that either honestly.
- 8:53I I understand that it's realistic to the character in
- 8:56the time, but I don't I, I don't think I could get myself to say
- 9:00that. I just feel like after every
- 9:01single take out I'd have to go sorry sorry.
- 9:04You know, like I I had that we had this discussion on a set
- 9:09that I was an extra for cuz one of the actors didn't want to say
- 9:12pussy. Like she just didn't feel good
- 9:13about it. And I was like, what do you say?
- 9:15Like lightweight instead, because it's souls like getting
- 9:18the gist of what you're going for.
- 9:20But you don't have to say pussy. I remember you.
- 9:22Yeah. And they're like good like that.
- 9:25Like that change. Yeah, that's a good.
- 9:26Suggestion. Yeah, so the movie had the
- 9:29working title of Grilled Cheese. It included 691 background
- 9:35actors, 64 shot dates in eight cities that it filmed in.
- 9:40Dang, yeah, it was a fucking beast.
- 9:41What a working title too to throw people off of it.
- 9:44I like that. I wonder if there was any
- 9:45thought behind that, like if is there a connection to grilled
- 9:48cheese and this right here. I don't know.
- 9:51I don't know. So the production designer,
- 9:55Hannah Beachworder, she admitted that she designed the crossbeams
- 10:00in the church to do the Wakanda Forever gesture.
- 10:03Yeah. Because Ryan Kuhler directed
- 10:06Black Panther. Yeah, that's cool.
- 10:08So Speaking of before, like I was saying the special effects
- 10:10companies, this movie had 7 special effects companies doing
- 10:14its bidding. Well, if you've got 691 extras.
- 10:17Yeah, so let's list them all here.
- 10:19We had Industrial Light and Magic Storm Studios, Rising Sun
- 10:23Pictures, base effects, Baraboom Studios, a lot of video effects
- 10:28and Outpost video effects. OK, so some of that was video
- 10:32effects? Yeah, it was just a lot of shit.
- 10:35And I actually came across an interview with two people, James
- 10:40Alexander and Michael Rowell. They were, I guess, probably 2
- 10:43of the more prominent people doing the effects.
- 10:46And they work specifically on the twin shots of Michael B
- 10:50Jordan because he plays 2 characters and they share a lot
- 10:53of screen time together. So that's a.
- 10:54Lot of managing to do and I've got quotes on how they handled
- 10:58doing all that because I'm sure a lot of people, myself
- 11:01included, were curious of how they pulled it off so
- 11:05seamlessly. So they came with the approach.
- 11:08They wanted to give Ryan control and freedom to shoot the movie
- 11:11however he wanted to that way like as if there were no visual
- 11:14effects involved. So if he wanted the 2 characters
- 11:17to interact in any way, they didn't want him to have to like
- 11:20think about any of that. Just go ahead and make the movie
- 11:22you want to make and we'll make it work.
- 11:23However, OK. The way that they did that, they
- 11:26created what they called a decision matrix, which is they
- 11:29say a geeky way of saying a list to say if we got 2 twin faces on
- 11:34screen at the same time, that we need to figure out a way to
- 11:36achieve achieve that. And wherever possible, we could
- 11:39film Michael B Jordan twice. So the simplest version of that
- 11:41would be you've got a camera that doesn't move and so you
- 11:45film a person and AB side performance and then you can put
- 11:50them together. Then it becomes more complex
- 11:52when you have a moving camera, so you need to repeat a camera
- 11:54move. For those instances, we use a
- 11:57tool called a techno Dolly, which is a crane, Unwield says.
- 12:00Able to just have like preprogrammed movements so that
- 12:03way everything still tracks the same Once its winds are crossing
- 12:07or having like instances where they were actually interacting,
- 12:10touching or feeling, then the play approaches become more
- 12:14difficult. And that's when they would look,
- 12:16they would do digital face replacements for which they had
- 12:19this Halo rig that they built just for this.
- 12:22They call it bespoke piece of technology they designed to that
- 12:25allow them to capture Michael B Jordan's performance in specific
- 12:29lighting settings per scene and built a data set from which they
- 12:32were able to create a digital face to make sure they captured
- 12:35his performance and were able to create the twinning effect that
- 12:38way. Yeah.
- 12:39Yeah. So there's like, a lot of
- 12:41thought and a lot of shit that got into that.
- 12:43Apparently it took a lot of mistakes, like they they failed
- 12:48a lot of times and they ended up having to do a lot of digital
- 12:52fuckery to make it all actually look right in the end.
- 12:55But, yeah, the fact that they have so much interaction in this
- 12:59movie and they were able to make it feel seamless was impressive.
- 13:02Yeah. So give them a round of applause
- 13:04for that. Or snaps.
- 13:06Here we go. Some of the wardrobe from the
- 13:09movie was going to originally be for the planned Blade film that
- 13:12was going to be made by Marvel. They had parts of that set
- 13:15during the same time period. And that film ended up stalling.
- 13:19So when it was stalled, Ryan Coogler recruited Ruth E Carter,
- 13:23who was the wardrobe person for that movie.
- 13:26And. Interesting.
- 13:27Yeah. They're like, hey, like, I can
- 13:28go ahead and use these pieces for that.
- 13:31And they cleared it with Marvel and everything was fine.
- 13:34Score was done by Gorson and his wife, who is a classically
- 13:38trained violinist. Oh cool.
- 13:41He used a 1932 Dobro Cyclops resonator guitar, which is the
- 13:45exact same guitar that Sammy plays in this movie here, so
- 13:49it's actually authentic. They consulted Blues producer
- 13:54Beau or Lawrence Beau Mitchell, and they did things such as
- 13:57visit the B.B. King Museum, went to local Juke
- 14:00joints in Clarksdale and Indianola for inspiration, and
- 14:05eventually, Speaking of Clarksdale, this movie did get
- 14:08its premiere there. Good.
- 14:10The thing is, though, that that town does not have a movie
- 14:13theater. Oh yeah?
- 14:14How'd they do that? So they they happened in May
- 14:18eventually, and they used the Civic Auditorium and the
- 14:22screening actually had Coogler and a bunch of the cast and crew
- 14:25show up and like do introductions and everything and
- 14:27actually, you know, meet with the people.
- 14:29And yeah, just kind of, I thought that that was really
- 14:32nice because I remember seeing people talk about that that and
- 14:34wanted to like they wanted to see it where it was set.
- 14:37And I can only imagine how cool that would be.
- 14:40So yeah, I'm happy for them that they pulled it off.
- 14:43And that's it for my phone packs for this movie.
- 14:45OK, so let's get into the good, bad, ugly and absurd.
- 14:49Jesse, you kick it off. What'd?
- 14:52You like man so much about this. This movie is just you get so
- 14:57immersed in this world and I think it does like it's three
- 15:02acts very clearly, very neatly, and each of them is a different
- 15:05kind of emotional ride. Like the whole first act is just
- 15:08them going around town, getting set up for their jukes open at
- 15:11night. And I I want to ride around with
- 15:14him all day. You know what I mean it.
- 15:16Was it was like engrossing to like, actually watch all that?
- 15:18And that really says something to the to the powerhouse acting
- 15:23in this cast. And I thought it was interesting
- 15:25what you said about them shooting Michael B Jordan so
- 15:28many different ways and having to do, like, a lot of things to
- 15:30make it look, you know, like, yeah, he does such good little.
- 15:35Just minor changes between Smoke and Stack where you get the
- 15:40sense of them being twins, but also they're their own people.
- 15:42There was a thing that they were mentioning, I didn't read the
- 15:45thing on this, but like there's 2 character distinctions between
- 15:49the two of them. Smoke.
- 15:50He's a smoker but he's got like uneasy hands.
- 15:53He can't roll his own cigarettes, so Stack has to roll
- 15:55them for him. That's why in the opening you
- 15:57see him like actually passing the cigarette.
- 15:59They said that that was gonna be like the tip hole shot to like
- 16:01establish the 2 characters and their ability to like be on
- 16:04screen together. And yeah like the way that they
- 16:08did that. They did like AADR rig thing
- 16:11where like they would get 3 beeps when like he would get 3
- 16:14beeps like when he needed to make like that connection to
- 16:16like pass something over. Yeah.
- 16:18And then they like use like a little marker or something like
- 16:20that for him to like actually have something physical to like,
- 16:23you know, where to have the placements of.
- 16:26That's cool. That's really cool.
- 16:29Yeah. I just in the storytelling that
- 16:31is viewing, there's so much to unpack with it.
- 16:37And I don't know that we can do like full justice to everything
- 16:39that's going on. I'm going to talk about the
- 16:41things that I know more of and can talk more easily about,
- 16:46which is the importance of music to like your culture and what it
- 16:50brings out into you and what it means to you and how it ties
- 16:52people together. And how even in that same
- 16:54culture, you have the different subcultures of the different
- 16:56types of like, because you can break up Blues into different
- 16:58types of Blues, you know, and that scene where they're playing
- 17:04and it lists that veil, you know, like Annie says at the
- 17:07beginning, lists the veil between the living and the dead,
- 17:09the past and the future. That is my favorite sequence of
- 17:15the year, if not one of my top favorites of all time.
- 17:17Yeah, that was a really cool moment.
- 17:20And I've watched it multiple times since then.
- 17:22Oh yeah. Have you just like played that
- 17:23clip to? Yourself, I've just played that
- 17:25clip to myself because it's just so.
- 17:27It is so powerful and you feel how important this music is to
- 17:33everybody that's in the room and you feel why it is such a draw
- 17:36for Sammy and why that's what he wants to live for.
- 17:41And I just, it's so, so powerful and seeing how it's bringing
- 17:46this group together in a place where they can just be together
- 17:51in a world that is not set up for them.
- 17:56And we talk so much about like we talk so much about how the
- 18:03system is rigged against people of color in this movie because
- 18:07they come out, you know, we've got we got Smoking Stack who
- 18:11fought in World War One. You know, they did that honor to
- 18:16their country, but they're still treated as lesser than because
- 18:19they're black. You've got all of these folks
- 18:21who are coming out to the Juke joint.
- 18:23They just want to have a good time.
- 18:24They want to enjoy music. They want to be with their
- 18:27people. And Smoking Stack can't keep the
- 18:30Juke joint running because most of these people only have the
- 18:33plantation tokens to pay with, which works on the plantation
- 18:40because it's a system that's set and designed to keep them there.
- 18:42And there's just so many little things there.
- 18:44And I think there's such an interesting parallel to to Remic
- 18:50trying to draw people in saying like, you want to have this
- 18:54love, this connection, this tie to your past and future, and
- 18:57we're all going to be together and we're all going to support
- 18:59you. And I think it's so similar to
- 19:01what you hear stories of people who have left hate groups that
- 19:04that's what drove them in the first place.
- 19:05Is being promised like a fellowship?
- 19:07But it's a fellowship that is actually built on evilness, Yes.
- 19:11Yeah, that's the I thought that, like, his pitch was solid.
- 19:15He's like, look, this world doesn't want you, we want you.
- 19:18Yes. And it's like, I mean, he's not
- 19:20wrong. And when, yeah, when you hear it
- 19:21like that, you're like, wait, but then you have to stop.
- 19:23And they're like, no, he's a demon.
- 19:25He's a vampire demon. He's not a good person.
- 19:27You don't listen to people like this and intertwine in that
- 19:31with, like, the KKK and Bert being, you know, a family
- 19:37member, like in the clan. Yeah.
- 19:40He's like, his uncle is. Yeah, his uncle is.
- 19:42Yeah. And like just all of that is
- 19:45tied in so well. And it just there's, like I
- 19:47said, there's a lot to break down that I don't know that
- 19:49we're going to be able to do good justice for it, but it is
- 19:52it, it's just a lot and it's so good.
- 19:56And it's a good vampire story too.
- 19:59It's a good vampire story. And we also like it's got a love
- 20:02story in it too, because we've got.
- 20:04Smoke and Annie, and they're dealing with the loss of their
- 20:08child, and they just want to move to the other side so they
- 20:10can be together. And that's the choice they make.
- 20:12But you hear Mary's heartbreak and Stack's heartbreak when
- 20:17Smoke kills Annie before she can turn.
- 20:20They legitimately thought that they were trying to bring their
- 20:22family together so they can live together for eternity as
- 20:25vampires for eternity. And we still see Stack and Mary
- 20:27together 60 years later. Yeah, and but it.
- 20:32Worked out for both sides, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 20:34And that that that ending line like that was before the sun
- 20:37went down. That was the best day of my
- 20:39life. And then Stack saying yeah it
- 20:40was the last time I saw my brother.
- 20:42I know man, that ending is so fucking powerful.
- 20:45The thing is, that ending had so much potential to be super
- 20:49fucking cheesy, but the way that it was handled and the way it,
- 20:52like I thought, like, it left me like, feeling, you know what I
- 20:56mean? Like it was a every, like, both
- 20:58times, like in the theater, and then this time, like, watching
- 21:00and I'm like, damn, that was fucking powerful.
- 21:02Yeah, that was well done. Yeah, I don't know if you could
- 21:06hear it. I got choked up trying to say
- 21:07that it's this movie. There's a reason this movie
- 21:11stayed in theaters for as long as it did and it's gotten all
- 21:13the hype. It is such a fucking good movie.
- 21:15Movies got heart. Really.
- 21:17It's made from like a place of. Love it is.
- 21:19Yeah. It is a deeply emotional movie.
- 21:22And I think that says a lot about Ryan Coogler knowing what
- 21:24movie he was making and making sure that he got to put out
- 21:28exactly what he was planning. Yeah, for sure.
- 21:31And kudos to Warner Bros for actually letting him do it.
- 21:34Yeah, and that's like the one good thing you guys did.
- 21:36Yeah, you fuckers. Congratulations, you're 1 good
- 21:39deed of the decade. Yeah, and they only did it
- 21:42because they wanted money. Yeah.
- 21:43Bastards. Which they did get it.
- 21:44Fuckers, they did get it all right.
- 21:47Well, at least they don't get to own the film after 25 years.
- 21:50Yeah, that's the silver lining here.
- 21:52OK, Is that all for you? Good.
- 21:54Yeah. Also Miles Katyn.
- 21:56I want him and everything. Yeah, I was.
- 21:58Give that, give that man some acting roles.
- 22:00I'm shocked at that this is his only role.
- 22:02I wonder if he like, I was curious to know like if he's
- 22:05done smaller scale things before and he's just not getting credit
- 22:08but like he did a good job for his first acting role if.
- 22:10That was the case, yeah. I I hope that the only reason
- 22:14there's nothing else on his IMDb right now is because he's booked
- 22:17and blessed and nothing's come out yet and it's not listed as
- 22:20in production yet. Could be him.
- 22:21I hope so. OK, so my good stuff.
- 22:25OK, First off, I just want to say the soundtrack to this movie
- 22:28is amazing. I fucking love it.
- 22:30I love Blues music. So like actually hearing it be
- 22:33played the way it was in this movie, like it gave it the
- 22:36respect and you get to see like the origins of it.
- 22:39You know what I mean? Like it gives like it like shows
- 22:42you like where it all came from, like the soul of it all.
- 22:44And I really like that it just like it added to the music, it
- 22:49added to all the scenes perfectly.
- 22:50Like it was really, really well done, kind of like what you were
- 22:53talking about before with like the different acts, being like a
- 22:56parent. Like I love that first act for
- 23:00the way it introduced the characters.
- 23:02It felt like organic and like it also felt like, you know, this
- 23:07is how we're like setting everybody up.
- 23:09Like the whole part of like them going out and gathering all
- 23:12these people. Like you go into the next
- 23:13person. I need you for this thing for
- 23:15my, my Duke. You know, it's just like going
- 23:17like from point A to point B over and over again, but we're
- 23:19just like constantly being introduced to new people.
- 23:22And then once we get to the Juke and it's open, like this is
- 23:25where everybody gets to like we, we know everybody, everything's
- 23:28established now We get to play with what we've set up here.
- 23:32And it's a fun time, man. Like I like just seeing
- 23:35everybody like have fun and like have like the best day of their
- 23:39lives. Like you can tell like this is
- 23:40like a golden day right here for everybody.
- 23:42It honestly, watching the first act, it makes me feel like I'm
- 23:46reading my favorite book. Yeah, like I'm just like a book.
- 23:50You're there for the journey, you know what I mean?
- 23:51And that's how I feel watching the first act.
- 23:54And like, I feel like this movie, like it has multiple
- 23:56genres to it, but they like ebb and flow very smoothly.
- 23:59So like the very first bit of this movie is definitely a
- 24:03drama. Like this movie is like a
- 24:05hardcore drama. And like I know I talked about
- 24:08Pearl being mostly a drama before.
- 24:10I feel like this movie handles the horror a little bit more
- 24:14than Pearl did for my liking. OK, so where I can still say
- 24:17this is definitely a horror movie because whenever we get
- 24:20there, like it takes a long time for the vampires to be
- 24:23introduced. It does take a long time, but it
- 24:25also doesn't feel like a long time, you know what I mean?
- 24:28Yeah, well, because the movie flows so well, yes.
- 24:30But like I if I had to take a guess, I would say the vampire
- 24:33probably arrives at 50 minutes in if I were to guess.
- 24:37Yeah, we didn't bother trying to stop it last night or two nights
- 24:40ago, Yeah. But yeah, like, and then it
- 24:43turns into an action movie at the end because then it's like,
- 24:45OK, well, now we got to see him fuck up some like KKK members.
- 24:49So like, we were just going to go action like that.
- 24:51It's not going to be a horror, even though that is a horrifying
- 24:53thing. Like you could have kept that
- 24:54horror with him. Being.
- 24:56Tracked down by them. But no, I was like, no, let's
- 24:58let him have his moment and he's dying or this is like, you know,
- 25:02he might die soon. He does die, but like.
- 25:05And. Everybody.
- 25:07Everybody in the theater, like, cheered, yeah.
- 25:11Shooting them, it's, you know, it's.
- 25:13Just it's sad you. You.
- 25:15Shoot the KKK. That's what happens.
- 25:17You see a Nazi, you see a Clanson.
- 25:18Yeah, they're not good people. No.
- 25:20And like, like I said, like I feel like it could have still
- 25:23worked if you wanted to keep it horror, but you know, like I
- 25:26like throwing in a little bit of action into my horror too.
- 25:28And I thought that it blended pretty well with everything that
- 25:31we already had. It and it really we needed that
- 25:33at the end. We needed that to close that
- 25:36thread of things as well. Yeah, yeah.
- 25:38Cuz like it is being like the groundwork for that is being
- 25:41laid. Yeah.
- 25:41Like they're gonna come back and kill you.
- 25:43Like that's the thing that's happening.
- 25:45Yeah. But you know.
- 25:47And to see and to see Smoke just being, like, Bulk in action
- 25:50here. Badass.
- 25:51Yeah. And then he just, like, he
- 25:53doesn't even entertain Hogsworth.
- 25:55Like, at the end, he tries to, like, plead.
- 25:57And he's just. And he goes, all right, now I'm
- 25:58gonna go die and be with my girlfriend and daughter.
- 26:02He kept them alive long enough to get that cigarette because he
- 26:04can't roll this on the cigarettes.
- 26:05So he's like, OK, now you're worthless to me.
- 26:09Yeah. So, yeah, other than what you
- 26:11had said, yeah. That's the good app for this.
- 26:13OK. All right.
- 26:14Bad. I didn't understand the aspect
- 26:17ratio changes. That was AI think that was the
- 26:20thing that I was worrying about too because like I noticed it
- 26:23watching it here, but in the theater.
- 26:25Did that happen? It it there were.
- 26:27I only ever noticed it when we go to widescreen and then the
- 26:30black. Bars would like yeah, they would
- 26:32move away. It made my brain feel like it
- 26:35was hiccuping and it I didn't know that that was real.
- 26:38And then we were watching it last night and it happened early
- 26:40on. And I was like, wait, did I
- 26:41imagine that? And then at the end when I was
- 26:43switching back and forth a lot, I was like, OK, I'm not making,
- 26:45I'm not imagining this. It happened I think during like
- 26:48the big action moments for sure, because I know like one of the
- 26:51ones that I really remember, like I remember it happened when
- 26:53they were driving through the field back and forth and then it
- 26:57would happen like whenever. I think it's like when they just
- 26:59wanted to capture the entire environment.
- 27:02Yeah, it's just. But I would have kept it that
- 27:04black bars like keep it widescreen.
- 27:06I like widescreen. Yeah, I like widescreen too and
- 27:09I just, I didn't understand. I don't.
- 27:12I was hoping that might have been some of the information you
- 27:14would have gotten is why we had those aspect ratio changes.
- 27:17The only it could have been a creative decision.
- 27:19I know some movies they they have like IMAX shots too.
- 27:25I don't know that just feels like an IMAX movie.
- 27:26It's had 100 fucking $1,000,000. So why not shoot an IMAX and OK,
- 27:31any other Max, but I know that's yeah, they may have like Max
- 27:34like Max. That meant that might have been
- 27:36like IMAX scenes. OK, yeah, If I were to guess, I
- 27:39don't know cuz they capture a whole wider range than you know,
- 27:43standard. OK, all right.
- 27:46Is that your only bad? Yeah, that was that was the
- 27:48thing that really just got me. OK, the only other the thing
- 27:53that I had that was bad was they had a lot of personal dramas
- 27:56being juggled and like I know this is like a drama for like
- 27:59the first bit, but like we had we had Stack and Mary being a
- 28:03thing. We had smoking Annie and the
- 28:06baby be a thing and then we had Sammy and his dad being like a
- 28:10thing and it's like it wasn't what going on.
- 28:13I feel like we could have like had maybe one or two Max
- 28:16characters have like this whole thing going on here, but I
- 28:19didn't. There's a lot of like dramatic
- 28:21things happening for like each person and it's like, I don't
- 28:25know, like I felt like we could have scaled that back just a
- 28:27tad. I.
- 28:27Think it was really important to understand how they ended up.
- 28:31How they ended up though. I think those were all
- 28:34characters. I think you could have done that
- 28:35without it being dramatic. I think that not everybody
- 28:38needed to have their own personal soap opera happening on
- 28:41the side. Last year they were living in
- 28:42their soap operas. It's just that's the reality of
- 28:44it. Yes they were, but we didn't
- 28:45need that. Like make make like smoke a sad
- 28:48boy. This is what happens when you
- 28:49have three main characters, you're going to have three main
- 28:51soap opera storylines. Smoke's the sad boy, stacks the
- 28:55happy boy, and Sam Sammy's the conflicted boy.
- 28:59Boom. Yeah, there we go.
- 29:02That's not that's my thing. That's not how the movie was.
- 29:05I agree. Yeah, that would have.
- 29:06Been. But how do you show those things
- 29:08if you don't have the drama? What?
- 29:10Do you mean no? I'm not saying it eliminated
- 29:13entirely, just like scale it down just a tad.
- 29:15I think Sammy's was pretty scaled down.
- 29:17Yeah, overall, but I think it was like still at the heart of
- 29:20the whole thing. Like, you know, like, do I give
- 29:22this up? I mean, like it goes all the way
- 29:25to the very end of the movie. You know, he's he's having like
- 29:28that struggle and then he's like, you know what, I'm running
- 29:30away, I'm leaving my family. I'm going to go to Chicago and
- 29:33then like him and smoking stack have that argument like you're
- 29:37not fucking doing that. And then you're like, you're
- 29:39staying here. Or if you're going to leave,
- 29:41you're going to go to this one specific place, you know, like.
- 29:44I think it was storytelling. It was storytelling.
- 29:48It's just preference, baby. That's all it is.
- 29:49That's all I would like from this right here.
- 29:51Scale it back a little bit. OK.
- 29:53Yeah. All right.
- 29:54How can we? I mean, that's pretty obvious,
- 29:57right? Yeah, I mean the nature of the
- 29:59whole time period. Yeah.
- 30:01And that's the thing that I think some folks don't want to
- 30:08talk about these days in 2025 is how the system was built for why
- 30:16CIS straight men. And they can't accept that if
- 30:21you build a system that way, that there's always going to be
- 30:24like a need to change the system to make it more equitable.
- 30:31You know what I mean? Like people don't really.
- 30:33Slavery bad, y'all? Yes, slavery bad, but like
- 30:36people in 2025, they're like it was so long ago, but like this
- 30:39movie took place in 1932 and that's.
- 30:41The thing that. Less than 100 years.
- 30:42Well, the end of the movie makes you realize how not far removed
- 30:45it is from. Yeah.
- 30:46Because, like, Sammy is, like, 1992 alive and still.
- 30:49Like, you know, he's like, making music.
- 30:52Yeah. He's like performing in Chicago.
- 30:54But it's like all of these institutions that we have that
- 30:57that our country is built on and the way different businesses and
- 31:02so have come up and everything, all of it comes from the
- 31:05perspective of a straight white man and what they are able to do
- 31:08and what they want to do. So everybody else is having to
- 31:11play a game of catch up just to get to the same start.
- 31:14Like their starting point is halfway through the race.
- 31:16You know what I mean it and it, it's hard to make people
- 31:22understand that like having privilege doesn't mean you are
- 31:26necessarily privileged, but you do have certain advantages just
- 31:29by the nature of like being white straight male.
- 31:34Like I'm not saying white straight males are all bad.
- 31:38I'm very fond of you and I don't think you're a dickhead and I
- 31:41don't think you take advantage of it.
- 31:44But that's the that's the reality is that like it was a
- 31:48bunch of white dudes that made this country and they made
- 31:50countries, they made the country with rules that work for them.
- 31:52Well, it's it's a bunch of. The bad white dudes, you know,
- 31:57like there are good ones out there.
- 31:58I think that that's the problem, speaking in sweeping
- 32:01generalizations like it's the bad people that did.
- 32:04It yeah, it's the bad people that did it.
- 32:05But that's that's The thing is like when people say like you're
- 32:09you have privilege being XYZ, it's not because like, oh, you
- 32:14were a bad person and you're using these for bad things.
- 32:16It's that the system was built with you in mind and you don't
- 32:20think about the things that you have to do just to kind of get
- 32:23to the same like people are starting so much farther behind
- 32:26the starting line. If that's if that makes sense.
- 32:28Yeah, it makes sense. Yeah.
- 32:30So it's it that nature of this is ugly in this movie and we're
- 32:35still seeing effects of it today.
- 32:36It's. Just an ugly thing.
- 32:37Yeah, it's a very ugly thing. Yeah, yeah.
- 32:40All right. I think that pretty much covers
- 32:41that though. Absurd.
- 32:45My God, Slim being such a little fucking shithead when he's taken
- 32:48over the door watch for cornbread and Sammy is trying to
- 32:53find Stack. And so it's like, Oh yeah, he's
- 32:55in that room and he you see his little shit eating grin.
- 32:59He knows what Stack was going in that room to do and he laughs
- 33:03his ass off at Sammy walking in on it.
- 33:05I. Feel bad for cornbread.
- 33:06Like men might have had the shit, you know?
- 33:09Like maybe he did have the shit. It's not the end.
- 33:12Like what do you want him to shit in the doorway bro like.
- 33:15But he was actually also a vampire when he came back.
- 33:18True, but I think that that's like a legitimate.
- 33:20Like they were mad at him for shitting and they had no reason
- 33:23to believe he was a vampire in that moment.
- 33:25They were mad for him shitting. He was acting weird when he came
- 33:28back. I also that's another story
- 33:30about this is how like as the vampires go on they stop even
- 33:33trying to pretend they're not vampires.
- 33:35No, that was my one of my answers is like how?
- 33:37Like as soon as you turn into a vampire, you turn fake nice.
- 33:40Yeah, like, I mean, it's like everybody has like that same
- 33:43tone. And I guess it's because they
- 33:45all share the same like Hive. Mind.
- 33:47Yeah, yeah, it's the hive mind of it all.
- 33:49Yeah. Do you have anything else?
- 33:51That was my big one. It's just Slim I man, I'd be in
- 33:56a week and band of Slim, he's fun.
- 33:59That's Slim. Yeah, he was pretty cool.
- 34:00He's probably one of my favorite characters.
- 34:03For me it is OK. So I love that scene with all of
- 34:10like the times and cultures and stuff like that.
- 34:12But like, I wasn't expecting it my first time watching.
- 34:15So like all of a sudden we're here in this period drama and we
- 34:18got Sammy up there playing the Blues and then what the fuck?
- 34:21This fucking like 70s rocker, like decked out and like
- 34:24futuristic like electric guitars.
- 34:26Like I'm like, what the fuck is happening?
- 34:28I guess nobody acknowledging this.
- 34:29And then I'm like, oh, OK, I see what we're doing here.
- 34:32But like the whole idea of that like happening and I, I know it
- 34:37didn't and it actually happened. Or did it happen?
- 34:38Did that actually happen and people just didn't acknowledge
- 34:41it? I don't understand.
- 34:42Like, but the idea that like all of that shit happened and
- 34:45everybody's like not losing their fucking minds.
- 34:48I don't think it actually happened because that scene ends
- 34:50with the Juke burning down. That's true.
- 34:54I did, didn't I? Yeah, I think.
- 34:55Or was that a transition? I think it was metaphorical.
- 34:58I think it was them. But the whole point is like
- 35:00feeling. The whole point is he has that
- 35:02gift to actually do that. Yes, but I'm saying like that's
- 35:05the metaphor of like what they were feeling from it.
- 35:08Gotcha, so he wasn't actually summoning, that was just like a
- 35:11metaphor. Yeah, like it opened that veil.
- 35:14It's, you can feel the music of the music and the culture and
- 35:17the dance and everything of the past and what it is going to be
- 35:19in the future. But I, I don't think there were
- 35:24literally those people dancing around them.
- 35:27I think it was just like they're feeling the power of the music
- 35:31and especially Sammy's way of playing the music.
- 35:34Well, no matter any intentions, the fact that I saw that guy out
- 35:38of the blue just like really had me.
- 35:40Like what the fuck is happening whenever I first watched this?
- 35:43So that was one of the upstairs and the final one is the end of
- 35:47the movie. Yeah, action would be badass,
- 35:49but smoke just going out in the open, like he doesn't give a
- 35:52fuck. He's just like he was like
- 35:54snapping away in the weeds at 1st and he's like, all right, go
- 35:56out, get my machine gun and I'm just walking at you all.
- 35:58No cover. I think he was prepared to die.
- 36:01I think he wanted to do. This I think he wanted to.
- 36:03Die. I think he was going for it.
- 36:05He everybody else is gone. He lost everybody else.
- 36:10I think he made us these. He realized Sammy was going to
- 36:16do whatever he was going to do. And I don't think he, I think he
- 36:21when he couldn't keep his brother safe, I think he didn't
- 36:24want to be responsible for Sammy.
- 36:27OK. Either way, I think it's absurd
- 36:29that you go out there and you're just like firing off no cover.
- 36:32Just say, hey, here I am. Shoot me.
- 36:35I appreciate the boldness. You're just going to defend this
- 36:39movie no matter what I say, aren't you?
- 36:40Yeah, I. Love this movie.
- 36:41Here's an absurd thing about. Well, actually it was because of
- 36:44this. I didn't say actually.
- 36:46OK. So what are you rating?
- 36:49Oh, this is a 10. Yeah, this is a 10 for me too.
- 36:51This movie is. Fantastic.
- 36:52Yeah, I I wasn't sure like because it was I was on such a
- 36:57high leave in the theater with it.
- 36:58I was a little bit nervous rewatching it at home but it do
- 37:01you. Think it was going to hold?
- 37:02Up I Well, I never know, you know, you never know.
- 37:07It absolutely held up though. Yeah, yeah.
- 37:09I mean, I got the same feeling watching it at home that I did
- 37:13here in or at the theater. Yeah.
- 37:16OK, cool. All right.
- 37:16So tins, tins. It's perfect, baby.
- 37:19Yeah. Yeah.
- 37:20All right. Let's get into it.
- 37:21Let's get into it. So we start off and Annie is
- 37:24talking about legends of music makers that are so true and
- 37:28their music is so pure. It pierces the veil between life
- 37:30and death. Past in the future can bring
- 37:33healing, but it also attracts evil.
- 37:35Yeah, we get some glowing red eyes.
- 37:38So at Clarksdale, Mississippi, October 16th, 1932, we see a
- 37:43bloody and battered Sammy walking in, interrupting church
- 37:47service. His dad, Jedidiah.
- 37:49I was like all right, cool, this is the moment to save you in
- 37:51front of the congregation. This will definitely work out
- 37:53the way I wanted to. Like I did not stage this
- 37:55people, I swear to God. He's like Sholi sinners the way
- 38:00one day earlier. He's like he's, he's holding the
- 38:02guitar neck too and he's like, drop the guitar, son.
- 38:06So Sammy is harvesting early in the morning.
- 38:10He talks to somebody else who's coming out as he's who's coming
- 38:15in as he's headed out, asking if he's going to be playing the
- 38:17guitar that night and where, and he just won't confirm.
- 38:20He won't confirm at all. That's his little secret.
- 38:24Yeah, he goes back home and he's looking for his guitar.
- 38:27Him and his mom like laughing and joking around with each
- 38:30other. Like you get such an idea of the
- 38:31family dynamics. He goes and wakes up the little
- 38:33ones. His mom says y'all need to get
- 38:34up. He looks for his guitar, can't
- 38:36find it. Jed.
- 38:39Jed, Yeah, he took the guitar because he's gonna tell him that
- 38:44he needs to come do preaching with him tomorrow.
- 38:46Yeah, so. Meanwhile, we have the brothers.
- 38:51They're waiting for him outside. Or no, they're waiting outside
- 38:53the building. They're waiting outside the old
- 38:55sawmill. They're waiting for Hogsworth.
- 38:57He's late and they're planning to buy it there.
- 39:03You want to buy the land around it, everything inside of it.
- 39:05They're asking good questions. They're like these floors
- 39:08cleaned recently. What'd you clean off of them?
- 39:10They remind me of your dad when we were getting one of your
- 39:14cars. The one.
- 39:16Time. Goes tired of looking a little
- 39:17flat. Can I get something down there?
- 39:20And then Hogsworth is like, I thought y'all were serious about
- 39:23this and more and more you say that we're not serious.
- 39:26And then they make it clear that they are loaded both in terms of
- 39:29cash and bullets. Yeah, negotiations get a little
- 39:33hostile, but it's OK. They end up buying the place.
- 39:35And then they're like, all right, we bought this.
- 39:37But if we see any of you or any of the clan boys come over here,
- 39:43they're being shot dead on site. And just like every racist, even
- 39:48nowadays, man's not a thing anymore, he says.
- 39:52Oh OK, so you know you are part of it then in. 1932 Are you
- 39:56fucking kidding me, dude? Like, that's like prime time,
- 39:59you know what I mean? Nah.
- 40:02All right. So now we see Sammy at the
- 40:04church talking to his dad where he's like, OK, you got to do the
- 40:07sermon tomorrow. So he he does like the little
- 40:10test run of it. And then he's like, all right,
- 40:11dad, I got to go get his guitar. The brothers are waiting
- 40:14outside. Why are you playing for people
- 40:16drinking and dancing and grinding bodies on each other
- 40:20and fucking yeah like that sounds like a good time to me,
- 40:24Jed. Yeah, like why aren't you?
- 40:26Yeah. Need to get this church a little
- 40:29bit more groovy. Let me put the Blues open here,
- 40:31yeah? Yeah, like, and that's the thing
- 40:34that I mean about, like, the music having like, all these
- 40:36different subcultures because even smoke, at some point later
- 40:39he's going to tell Sammy that he should go play church music.
- 40:41Yeah. So you got like these different
- 40:43ways that it branches out. Yeah.
- 40:45So yeah, they're in the the car now.
- 40:47Sammy's in the car with smoke and.
- 40:49Smoke asked about Uncle Jed. We're going to learn later that
- 40:53their dad was horribly abusive and Smoke ended up killing him
- 40:57after he knocked out Stack. Yeah, and they're worried about
- 41:02Jed maybe having similar. Yeah, maybe his dad's the same
- 41:05as their dad. Was they, they're brothers.
- 41:07Yeah, they're they're very clear on it.
- 41:09He goes No. Then he doesn't raise a hand on
- 41:11me. Sometimes the little ones if
- 41:12they deserve it, but usually that's Mom.
- 41:15So he makes it very clear, like he's like, I'm not in the same
- 41:18situation as you all, but. Yeah, he asked him about
- 41:21Chicago. Because they've been up in
- 41:22Chicago and they decided to come back down to their hometown.
- 41:25Yeah, he said. It sounds real great.
- 41:28You know, place where black men can walk around, go anywhere he
- 41:30wants and they're like, it's. It's the same as Mississippi
- 41:33except for skyscrapers, and that's about it.
- 41:36Yeah, which gotta be hard to hear.
- 41:39So they stop on the side of the road there and they walked to
- 41:42the side and there's a truck hidden in the weeds, doesn't.
- 41:46That kind of make you want to look through cornfields and see
- 41:47if you can find a truck full of booze.
- 41:49Well, we did watch Clown in the Cornfield last night and that
- 41:51makes me wary of cornfields come across any clowns.
- 41:56Maybe if I find a truck. I don't know.
- 41:57I'm a little bit 5050 on it now. I.
- 41:59Was texting our friend Kendra about it and she said it really
- 42:04should be called corn in a clown field and I said that is more
- 42:07accurate to the ratio of corn to clown.
- 42:09Make that the tagline. So they they open up the flap of
- 42:16the truck and there's a snake. I was wondering if there's a
- 42:18symbolism for like, you know the sin.
- 42:20Yeah, yeah. Garden of Eden.
- 42:22Yeah. And they do a cool shot of
- 42:26smoke, throwing the knife over to stack and then boom, just
- 42:29like stabs and throws it down on the ground.
- 42:31Yeah, so. They're gonna split up, Yeah,
- 42:34because they're debating if they have time.
- 42:35They're like, what if we just set up tonight and open next
- 42:37week and snack's like, Nope, we'll split up, we'll get taken
- 42:39care of. Got to do it.
- 42:41So Stack is going to take Sammy and they're going to go and
- 42:45gather up some people to go, you know, perform with them in Y-9.
- 42:49And they're going to get the band back together.
- 42:52They are, and Smoke is going to go into town and get supplies
- 42:55needed for the opening. So smoke goes to like a seems
- 42:59like a little market area like. They're downtown.
- 43:02Yeah, and he pulls a girl over, offers her money to wash the
- 43:06truck. And he says if anybody looks
- 43:07like they're looking around, they're looking too long,
- 43:09getting too close. You lay on that horn, I'll give
- 43:11you $0.10 a minute, she said. Thank you.
- 43:13He goes, no, no, no. This negotiation.
- 43:15I like this. We gotta go back.
- 43:16I love this. Teach her how to negotiate,
- 43:18yeah. He's like helping the next
- 43:19generation. He's helping her be
- 43:20self-sufficient. Yes.
- 43:22And I like watching this and it and it'll come back here in just
- 43:24a minute. Yeah, I know.
- 43:26Yeah. I love that moment.
- 43:27Yeah, that was cool. So yeah, they he gets her to
- 43:30negotiate for a better Ray and she's got a way on the horn if
- 43:32anything happens. So he goes in talks to Lisa,
- 43:36daughter of Bowen Grace. Yes and he talks to Beau about
- 43:41some catering what they need they need a sign also he asked
- 43:45about Chicago, He said I heard y'all won big on the tables.
- 43:48He goes you heard some rumors, but that's what they are they're
- 43:51rumors. So I'm not going to say that
- 43:53they're not wrong, but and. Then suddenly we hear that the
- 43:55horn. Honk.
- 43:56He goes out. He immediately shoots Terry in
- 43:58the ass. Which Terry's asking for it.
- 44:01Yeah. He's going through his truck.
- 44:02He's like, I didn't know it was yours.
- 44:03And the girl's, like I told you, it was his.
- 44:05Yeah, I like that. I like this girl.
- 44:07Yeah. Yeah, he knows them, they're
- 44:10familiar and they're like, OK, whatever, I'll let you go.
- 44:12But then he shoots the other guys.
- 44:13I can't say that you almost stole from the Smokestack twins.
- 44:16Yeah. And there's like a little line
- 44:17drop where it's kind of mentioned that they might have
- 44:20worked for Capone when they were in Chicago.
- 44:22Yeah, so I'm getting the impression that there's just a
- 44:24lot of rumors being stirred up about these. 2 So he pays Bow
- 44:28extra to patch up those two guys so that way they're not bleeding
- 44:31out. And he talks to Grace about
- 44:34making a sign and they have such a good negotiation, such a like
- 44:38perfect back and forth. And this is what he was teaching
- 44:41that little girl, to be able to do something.
- 44:43Yeah, Barter. And he makes an arrangement to
- 44:46get the flowers that they had there too, because he's going to
- 44:48be taking. Them with somebody, I think this
- 44:50is also really important to to show Grace's toughness in this
- 44:54moment because she's going to have a tough a tough time later
- 44:58on. So I think it's good that we
- 44:59establish what kind of character she is earlier so we understand
- 45:03how scared and desperate she is later.
- 45:04Yeah. So now we see Stack and Sammy.
- 45:10Stack has given Sammy good advice on how to give a woman
- 45:13head. It is what it is, Sammy, and
- 45:15Sammy takes the notes. He hands on the guitar, No.
- 45:19No, he had the guitar. He had the guitar, yeah, but
- 45:21they got it from him and he asked about like the origin of
- 45:25it or whatever and says he got it from old Charlie Perlin.
- 45:29No Charlie Patton. Charlie Patton, Sorry I read
- 45:32down here. Boy, I thought that I did the
- 45:34thing where I wrote underneath it.
- 45:36Pearlene is somebody on the lean Pearlene.
- 45:38We see her in a little bit. Yeah, yeah.
- 45:40No, they said Shirley Patton's. He also asks about their dad.
- 45:43He said, you guys told me that you'd tell me, you know, what
- 45:47the story was someday when I was older and I'm older now.
- 45:50And that's when Zach tells, you know, the story that I explained
- 45:53earlier. So he's getting a little bit
- 45:54more of an idea of their dynamic and why they're being kind of
- 45:58protective of him. They go to a train station and
- 46:02Delta Slam is out there paying his harmonica.
- 46:05They offer for him to come play goes for $20.
- 46:08He was like, I play at Messengers every Saturday night.
- 46:10I've done it for the past 10 years.
- 46:12I'll be able to do it 10 years to come if I live that long.
- 46:15Are y'all going to be here next month?
- 46:17So $20 now versus all the corn liquor I can drink.
- 46:21I'm happy enough with my life. And that's when Stack pulls out
- 46:24an Irish beer for him, and the Irish beer wins them over.
- 46:28Yep, and he offers them $40 and all those drinking drink
- 46:32tonight. And then Slim and Sammy play a
- 46:36little demo to drum up interest. And Stack is telling everybody
- 46:40like, come to our Juke tonight. You'll hear these boys play and
- 46:45see. The attention of a lady there,
- 46:48Pearlene. Pearlene.
- 46:49Pearlene. Pearlene.
- 46:50Yes, Pearlene. She tells Sammy that she's
- 46:54married and he better be careful cuz he says aren't you happily
- 46:57married? There's.
- 47:00Lots of thing going on in this movie, yeah.
- 47:02She also sings. He's.
- 47:04Yes, here. She sings and she says she does.
- 47:07He's known as preacher boy. Yeah.
- 47:09And his reputation precedes him with his guitar playing.
- 47:12So they've seen each other perform before, they said yeah.
- 47:16Jack is approached by Mary who is grieving and pissed cuz she
- 47:20was like you just up and left me after you told me you love me.
- 47:23I waited for you, buried my mom yesterday, sure expected to see
- 47:27you and your brother after all she did for you, but I guess she
- 47:30wasn't any good that you did and.
- 47:33He's pretty hostile towards us. Like, yeah, that's right.
- 47:35Fuck off. Like pretty much.
- 47:37So yeah, they don't. They don't have like.
- 47:38This is not a happy reunion. Yeah, so Sam, Sammy, Stack and
- 47:44Slim, that's a lot of s s There's a lot of s s.
- 47:49They they're driving. Yeah.
- 47:51Oh my. God, it's.
- 47:53So deep, so deep. So they're driving down slim
- 47:56haulers at some prison workers that are out there digging
- 48:01ditches, breaking rocks. He knows some of them used to
- 48:05play together and basically he says this is a story he tells
- 48:11about his group being rounded up by some white cops, forced to
- 48:15play for some white folks, and later one of his friends gets
- 48:17lynched after being accused of doing something.
- 48:20He said white folks like the Blues, but they don't like the
- 48:22people who make it. Yeah, they were going like he
- 48:24was going to take his money and go to Little Rock or whatever,
- 48:26and they just didn't know. We're not having.
- 48:28That yeah, you're going to die. Yep.
- 48:30Yeah, and then they come across Cornbread, who's out there
- 48:33working in the field, too. They offer him some money and a
- 48:37job. Yes.
- 48:38And he's like, I can't. I got my wife and she goes how
- 48:40much money? I like.
- 48:42I like her being like how much money?
- 48:43Yeah, Yeah. So it's a.
- 48:46Bold move to go out there just like insulting and it's like
- 48:48all. Right.
- 48:49Yeah, fucking piece of shit. Fuck you.
- 48:51And your wife? You're working for me today.
- 48:53How much money? Yeah, like, OK.
- 48:55It worked though. Yeah, I guess it did.
- 48:56Yeah, Smoke is at a little makeshift gravesite, and he
- 49:03leaves some flowers and says Papa's home and oh, God, Just
- 49:08like Michael B Jordan's acting is really phenomenal in this.
- 49:13Like, just the way his voice like has a little hitch to it
- 49:16when he's saying that. Yeah, you can tell it's outside
- 49:18like a house and you can tell it's like a, you know, a little
- 49:20grave out in the front yard. And he he sees Annie over there
- 49:24and there's some children and they're buying potions from her
- 49:28and she's like a potion seller. She's from, she's from
- 49:31Louisiana. She's.
- 49:33She's all about that stuff. Yeah, And they kind of argue
- 49:36about it because he's like, listen, I've been out there in
- 49:39the world. I know money is what makes
- 49:40people powerful. You shouldn't be taking this
- 49:43fake paper money. It's not really any real money.
- 49:46And she's like, I believe in the magic.
- 49:48How do you know that what I did didn't keep you and your brother
- 49:50out there also? She refuses his money because
- 49:53that's blood money. I don't want any of it.
- 49:55Yeah, she. Also re UPS his mojo bag which I
- 49:58like that it's called a mojo bag.
- 50:00And I like that. Like he acts like it's not
- 50:03something he believes in, but he's kept that on him.
- 50:06He throws it away at the end of the movie though, which I always
- 50:08thought was a strange choice. I think it was when he was
- 50:10accepting that he was going to die.
- 50:12He wanted to be with Amy and his baby.
- 50:13When? You want the mojo for that
- 50:15because it was the thing that connected you to her.
- 50:17He wants to just go to the afterlife with her.
- 50:20Fuck this mojo. That's why he took off the mojo
- 50:22bag. It was too strong, his mojo was
- 50:25too strong, and his. Mojo was too strong.
- 50:27Yeah, the opposite of Austin Powers.
- 50:29That's true, except for when his mojo got stolen.
- 50:32Yeah, but he he discovered in the end he didn't need his mojo.
- 50:35It's very clear. It's all the same story.
- 50:38Awesome powers in this very similar story beats.
- 50:42Anyway, they have sex, yeah. Yeah, that's the mojo he's got
- 50:46right there, baby. Yeah.
- 50:48So let's see, we just we. This is where we cut.
- 50:53To oh, she's cooking for them tonight by the way yeah he
- 50:55recruited her to cook yeah for them so now we get.
- 50:59A very burnt man approaching a house.
- 51:01He's saying that some indigenous folks at Choctaw are after him.
- 51:06They took his wife. I don't know why I didn't notice
- 51:08this in the moment, but like, obviously he's a vampire because
- 51:11he's like sizzling in the fucking sunlight right now.
- 51:13Yes, yeah. But he's being She was pulling a
- 51:16spike pull his jacket up over his head, running through the
- 51:18sunlight. But yeah, like he talks to the
- 51:21person that opens the door. It's 2 two people.
- 51:25You can see like a Klan hood in the background there so.
- 51:28You know. Read the clan and he's like, he
- 51:30has some Native Americans, except he doesn't call him that.
- 51:32Yeah, and. No, they're they're from the
- 51:34Choctaw tribe. Cha cha Choctaw.
- 51:37Choctaw. Yeah.
- 51:38OK. They arrive and ask if they've
- 51:42seen a man and Bert's wife. I didn't write down her name.
- 51:48Joan. Joan.
- 51:50Yeah. Joan is like, well, he's not
- 51:52here. And they're like, OK, I just,
- 51:54you know, the sun's about to go down.
- 51:57That man isn't what he seems. He is.
- 51:58I'm just telling you, like, be careful.
- 52:00And they leave. Yeah, cuz it's like sundown,
- 52:03like they don't want to be out at night.
- 52:04And she goes to tell Bert and Remic about what happened, and
- 52:09instead she finds Bert bleeding out, bleeding out, Remic very
- 52:13bloody. And then Bree's like, I'm
- 52:15better. Yeah.
- 52:17So, OK, now we went. Now we see folks starting to rob
- 52:22to Club Juke. Yeah, it's, it's just a fun
- 52:25little vibe. Everybody's, you know, getting
- 52:28comfortable, starting to have a good time.
- 52:31Smoke pulls Annie and Stack to the side when they accept the
- 52:34plantation tokens. And he's like, we need real
- 52:36money. And Stack and Annie are both
- 52:38like these folks work hard. They need to be here.
- 52:42They need this place. They need this night.
- 52:44Let. Them have this, Yeah, I like
- 52:47that. I understand where they're both
- 52:48coming from. You need that one person to be
- 52:50like, hey, we need this. We want the operation to
- 52:53continue, but also you need a little bit of that.
- 52:56But hey, come on. Yeah, come on.
- 52:58We're people, people here. Yeah.
- 53:01Yeah. So Pearlene is shocked to learn
- 53:05that Sammy's related to the twins because their reputation
- 53:09also precedes them. They're not preacher boys.
- 53:11They are not preacher boys. They're quite the opposite of
- 53:14it. And Mary also arrives.
- 53:18Sammy tries to get her out because Sammy saw what happened
- 53:21between her and Sack earlier. And he's like, listen, I'm with
- 53:24the twins. I think you need to leave.
- 53:25She goes, oh, fuck you if you're with the twins.
- 53:27And then she was like, oh, my God, you're little Sammy.
- 53:29You must be old enough to drink now.
- 53:30Come on, let's go get a drink. Let's go get a drink.
- 53:32She's so excited. Yeah, like.
- 53:33All right, let's go. I'm getting you a shot.
- 53:35Yeah. So Sammy is now going to go
- 53:40perform, Yes. And this is where we get that
- 53:43really cool scene. Well hold on, Mary explained
- 53:46some of her background to him and how how she knows the twins
- 53:49and you know, probably met him a long time ago and he just
- 53:53doesn't remember. So her grandpa was half black,
- 53:55her dad raised her so that way she wouldn't be.
- 53:57No, her dad was half black. I thought her grandpa.
- 53:59Oh really? Yeah.
- 54:00OK. Dad raised her.
- 54:02She is. I guess we would refer to as
- 54:03white passing. Yeah, cuz she looks like a white
- 54:06person, but she has like. Yes, yeah.
- 54:10So, you know, she, her dad raised her to try and keep her
- 54:13safe from the clan, but her mom delivered the twins.
- 54:18So she they've known each other basically.
- 54:21And their. Mom, their entire wives, I think
- 54:23they're yeah, yeah. And so, yeah, that's her mom
- 54:28died yesterday. Yeah, so.
- 54:29Because her dad was a piece of shit so they basically had to go
- 54:31to her. For good stuff.
- 54:33So there's a lot of history between Mary and the twins.
- 54:36So that that was important to know why she was there, right,
- 54:40right. And Stack just wants her to be
- 54:42safe. That's that's the whole reason
- 54:44he won't be with her is because. It's bad news.
- 54:46It is is. I mean, yeah, he's with the
- 54:49gangsters and everything. But also in 1932, a woman who
- 54:52most people would look at in a scene is white.
- 54:54Yeah. True.
- 54:55And a very obviously black man. That was not well received.
- 54:59Yeah. True.
- 55:01So Sammy transcends time and space.
- 55:04I just wrote Sammy plays. He does.
- 55:07He just, this whole this whole scene just gives me goosebumps
- 55:11every time. It's so it really.
- 55:14He, Ryan Coogler, did such a good job capturing the power of
- 55:18music. I thought the performance is
- 55:20really well done too. Yeah, Oh God, Miles Cayton's
- 55:23voice. Yeah.
- 55:24I'm wondering how much of it was actually him playing and like
- 55:26how much of it was the score like maybe like half his vocals
- 55:30over like the dude playing because it looked like he was
- 55:32playing in real time there. Like he was hitting the like the
- 55:34frets and like the strumming and everything was synced up
- 55:37perfectly. Yeah, he was playing in a way
- 55:39that it doesn't look like he learned some basic movement,
- 55:42movements, movements. It's.
- 55:44Been gonna be too southern talking about this.
- 55:47Well, no, I was going to say motions and then movement
- 55:50started to come out. That's what happened with that.
- 55:52Yeah, but no, it's really cool. I love it.
- 55:54The guitar sounds amazing. He's got an amazing voice.
- 55:57If his acting career doesn't take off, he should pursue a
- 56:00musical. Absolutely, absolutely.
- 56:04After he's done, he uses lessons Stack taught him on Perlin Smoke
- 56:10show Stack how much money they've made in real money
- 56:13versus the plantation money and they've only got.
- 56:17Like a couple months left, but they're going to like they're
- 56:19going to burn through with their money that they have.
- 56:21Yeah, they will be under in two months.
- 56:23And then this is where our trio of vampires arrive at the door.
- 56:27Cornbread holds them off, and Remic, Joan and Bert decide to
- 56:30give like a little preview. They were drawn.
- 56:33They heard from a distance. Sammy's playing.
- 56:36They were drawn. Remic is seeing this as an
- 56:38opportunity he's been a vampire for for a very long time.
- 56:41Yeah. Did they ever like go into any?
- 56:43I don't think they did. They hinted at it.
- 56:46They he's made. He made a few remarks here and
- 56:48there about how it's been a long time since he's seen his family
- 56:52and when he starts singing he goes into an Irish rogue that he
- 56:56did not have. He does the Irish dance before
- 56:58too. Yeah, yeah.
- 56:59Which you? David Boreanaz wishes, yeah.
- 57:03You, you made you made this connection.
- 57:04This is the little shit. One of the little shits from
- 57:06Eden Lake by the. Way, yeah, yeah.
- 57:08But this guy? Yeah, this guy has done nothing
- 57:11but cost strong on a Jesse. Yeah, the entire his entire
- 57:14life. Sorry, Jack O'Connell, I don't
- 57:16know if you're a real good person or not, but fuck all of
- 57:18your characters. Good actor, he does a great.
- 57:20Job in this yeah you make me hate you on.
- 57:22Screen, He was like one of the first people cast in this, other
- 57:24than obviously Michael B Jordan. Just like him and Ryan Cooper
- 57:28collaborate a lot, but I, I like this, you know, they, they play
- 57:31like a nice little Jingle and it's like, hey, like everybody's
- 57:34actually like, this is actually pretty good music, but I don't
- 57:36think having you here is really for the best.
- 57:38So they turn them away. Yeah, and, and they bring up a
- 57:41good point because they're like, oh, it's because of our skin
- 57:43color. Like, that's weird.
- 57:44Like we all just want to be here and enjoying the music together.
- 57:47But as the group talks about together later, all it takes is
- 57:50for one little thing to go wrong.
- 57:51Like one person steal something on them accidentally or somebody
- 57:54will get the wife the wrong way and then it could turn into a
- 57:57whole thing, yeah. So it's it's an act of
- 58:01protection. Yeah, yeah.
- 58:03So Smoke tell Sammy that the wife of a musician is not a
- 58:07happy one and he really ought to just consider playing in the
- 58:10church. And if he doesn't, then
- 58:13basically he's starting to blackball Sammy around
- 58:16Mississippi and Chicago. I, you know, I feel bad for him
- 58:19too because like, look, no offense to people that like it,
- 58:21but church music sucks. Like it's just, it's not fun to
- 58:24listen to even when you try and make it fun.
- 58:26I've heard church rap. It's not good.
- 58:29Like it's just not. What about Reliant K?
- 58:33No, no, it's just not good, man. Like.
- 58:35I need Hawkins dance in my khaki dance.
- 58:36Nope, Nope, nothing better. Sammy's on the right track here
- 58:39boys. Music is the way to go.
- 58:41Church music. I would not like to go from what
- 58:44he has been playing and be like, but do the gospel son.
- 58:46Like no, fuck that dude. Like his dad doesn't seem like
- 58:49the type who even likes the gospel music in his church.
- 58:51I know like. Remember, the little kids are
- 58:53allowed to sing this little out of mine and that's about it.
- 58:55Yeah, it's just like I understand his perspective.
- 58:58Like you've already had this cool.
- 59:00Like I know how to I get the fucking guitar slide, man.
- 59:03Like I'm you think they're going to let me do that shit in the
- 59:05gospel? Fuck that.
- 59:07And I think that's what's so great about, like, when he plays
- 59:10that song, it's called I Lied to You.
- 59:13And he wrote it about his dad, like, because he's tries to act
- 59:17like he's fine with being in the church, but he's lying to his
- 59:19dad the whole time. Yeah.
- 59:20Because he cares about. Yeah, he cares.
- 59:22About his lies, yeah. Stack tells Mary about what's
- 59:27going on with with the money and how they're going to be
- 59:30underwater soon. And she's like, well, what if I
- 59:32go fill out those people? They might have money, maybe
- 59:35maybe they'll be free people that we can have in here tonight
- 59:38and it'll be OK and it'll at least get you a little coin to
- 59:41go farther. So she goes out there and they
- 59:43give her gold coins and she's like what the fuck?
- 59:46Like what kind of currency is this?
- 59:47And like, that's the good kind. And.
- 59:50It's universal. People like gold.
- 59:52Yeah. And then she's they're like, you
- 59:53seem sad. She goes, yeah, my mom just died
- 59:55and my ex-boyfriend is being really mean to me.
- 59:59And they're like, well, we can save you from being sad.
- 1:00:00And she's like, this is really creepy.
- 1:00:02I'm gonna go. And then she pulls out a gun.
- 1:00:05Yeah, well, because he starts drooling and has glowing eyes.
- 1:00:08I would boil a gun in that moment, too.
- 1:00:10Yeah, but she does the fatal mistake of turning her back on
- 1:00:12them. Yeah, which gives him the
- 1:00:14opportunity to fly. So we don't see what happens,
- 1:00:18but we do see Mary come back and she asks Cornbread, aren't you
- 1:00:20going to let me in? No, yeah.
- 1:00:24Slim comes by and covers the doors of cornbread.
- 1:00:27Can go pee and maybe poop. Yeah, and.
- 1:00:30We don't. It's unconclusive, it's
- 1:00:31inconclusive. If he poops as he's peeing, we
- 1:00:34hear them. He's not pooping, he's peeing.
- 1:00:36He's actually, we see him peeing.
- 1:00:38Yeah, unless he's pooping. His shorts, his britches.
- 1:00:41Then maybe he's pooping. Listen, he's in overalls.
- 1:00:44It's a lot. If the poop came on too fast, he
- 1:00:46might not have had an opportunity.
- 1:00:48That's why you need that butt, flat butt.
- 1:00:52And as he's peeing, he just like hears like a little whisperer.
- 1:00:54He's like, oh, that. Ocean.
- 1:00:56That should be a gay fat poop. Poop, poop.
- 1:01:03Stop. Stop being one of the dark.
- 1:01:04It's dark, dark now, OK? That's when vampires like they
- 1:01:08that's their time. Dark, Dark, OK.
- 1:01:11That's also when Halloween attractions are at their most
- 1:01:14dangerous. This is also October in the
- 1:01:16South, so it's at night is dark dark.
- 1:01:19It's prime dark, dark time. It's dark, dark.
- 1:01:22Yeah, so we don't know exactly what happens, but.
- 1:01:24Dark. Dark.
- 1:01:25Yeah, we have an audience menacing.
- 1:01:26Cornbread's not fast. No, he's not a quick guy.
- 1:01:29He's a big guy, which makes him good for door security, but he's
- 1:01:33not the one chasing people down. Yeah, we're running away so.
- 1:01:38Stack goes. Mary.
- 1:01:40Mary. Yeah.
- 1:01:41Mary comes in, leads Stack to a private room, and I think we
- 1:01:45know what they're thinking. They're Yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:48Smoke is dealing with a fight in the gambling room and he sends
- 1:01:52Sammy to go get Stack and Sammy gets in there, walks in with
- 1:01:57Delta Slim encouraging the whole fucking thing, wrapping his ass
- 1:02:00off. You see Mary riding him on top
- 1:02:02there and he's just, oh shit. It does look sexy from that
- 1:02:07shot. I think, I mean in that moment
- 1:02:08they were actually having sex, I think.
- 1:02:11And so he comes out and smells like where's our goes?
- 1:02:14I didn't want everything. He's getting nookie and fuck
- 1:02:17that. I'm gonna go like I told you,
- 1:02:19get my brother, you get my brother cuz I'm not going at him
- 1:02:21alone in that state. You gotta.
- 1:02:22Go yeah, that's a brother thing, that cousin thing.
- 1:02:25Yeah, but unfortunately when they get in there, the situation
- 1:02:29has changed and Mary has, you know, chewed on him in a non
- 1:02:34sexy way. Yeah, in a way where he's
- 1:02:35bleeding from his neck profusely.
- 1:02:37Yeah, in the in the way that kind of kills a person and she
- 1:02:42stack or Smoke doesn't even hesitate.
- 1:02:44He shoots her, doesn't do anything to her, and then she
- 1:02:46goes, we're going to kill you all.
- 1:02:48And then she runs. He lights her off.
- 1:02:50I mean, she's got like 50 fucking shots all around her.
- 1:02:53Yeah. And yes, she runs out of the
- 1:02:55building. Stack dies.
- 1:02:57This is such a hard moment because like, Smoke is just
- 1:03:00holding him and Stack is so scared and Smoke has always been
- 1:03:03the one protecting him. And there's like an added thing
- 1:03:06about them being twins, because that's an extras, yeah.
- 1:03:10That's a connection right there. Yeah.
- 1:03:12They were like, together the entire time.
- 1:03:14Yeah. Delta swim shuts down the party,
- 1:03:16tells everybody to go. Home and people are like no fair
- 1:03:19no fun. Dude you just heard so many
- 1:03:22gunshots and a woman ran out of here bloody.
- 1:03:25Sounds like a good time. That's a good party right there.
- 1:03:27That's like Halloween last year when we were at the bar and,
- 1:03:30like, we decided it was time to go when an ambulance showed up.
- 1:03:34Yeah. We were like, yeah, this is this
- 1:03:36is just not the party, though. We're.
- 1:03:37Yeah, let's. Get out of here.
- 1:03:40Bo goes to go get the car and Cornbread makes his way back.
- 1:03:45Grace, no. OK, hold on.
- 1:03:49You're missing a couple of important plot points that make
- 1:03:52this make more sense. So Slim tells the party to
- 1:03:57disappear. Everybody's gotta get out.
- 1:03:59Annie tells Smoke she realizes what's going on.
- 1:04:02Annie, she's a smart one. She's like, we need to move his
- 1:04:07body outside. And Smoke is like, fuck you,
- 1:04:10we're not doing that. And she goes, you just lit up
- 1:04:13Mary, and nothing happened to her.
- 1:04:16I'm telling you, we need to move his body out.
- 1:04:18And this is where Grace wants her and Bo to go home.
- 1:04:21Bo's like, we need to be here for whatever's happening.
- 1:04:24This is important that we stay here.
- 1:04:26Also, it seems kind of dangerous outside from what they're
- 1:04:28saying. And she's like, our daughter's
- 1:04:30at home. And he's like, good point.
- 1:04:32Let me go get the car. And he thinks this is like a
- 1:04:35hate situation, which I've never heard of that before, but
- 1:04:38apparently it's like the you take the form of a different
- 1:04:41person type thing. Yeah.
- 1:04:43Yeah, yeah. So she's typical demonology kind
- 1:04:48of stuff. Which Travis is now halfway
- 1:04:50through Season 3 of Buffy. I was just not thinking of
- 1:04:52Giles. This is just like the Giles of
- 1:04:54this movie here. Yes, yeah.
- 1:04:57Something about having to go to a book.
- 1:04:59Yeah, Yeah, She doesn't know. Yeah.
- 1:05:01Cornbread comes back and he's like, all right, let me go in.
- 1:05:05And they're like, where have you been?
- 1:05:07He's like, I don't take a shit, let me in.
- 1:05:09Come on. And they're like, why are you
- 1:05:11asking? He goes because it's polite.
- 1:05:12And they're like, you've been in and out all night, Why do you
- 1:05:15need to be specifically asked? And this is where he starts
- 1:05:17getting a little hostile and. And he's like, you're not
- 1:05:19welcome in here. They try to shoo him off and he
- 1:05:23goes, what about my money? So Smoke reaches out to give him
- 1:05:27money, and then Cornbread grabs him, pulls him outside.
- 1:05:30There they managed to shoot him in the face, which doesn't kill
- 1:05:34him, but it does, you know, get him off of Smoke and he can get
- 1:05:37inside. He wasn't bit, but this is where
- 1:05:40they're realizing that they are dealing with some real shit.
- 1:05:44Stack is now away, alive, like in the room, and he's like
- 1:05:48banging on the door and saying hey guys, let me out, I'm all
- 1:05:50good now, you know, Like, yeah, I was bleeding pretty bad, but
- 1:05:53everything's OK now. And obviously Smoke is the one
- 1:05:56that's having a hard time with this.
- 1:05:59And eventually Stack breaks out of the room.
- 1:06:02He knocks down the door, he breaks out and he hits him with
- 1:06:05some pickled garlic juice. Garlic water.
- 1:06:07Yes. You know what?
- 1:06:09Yeah. Gross.
- 1:06:11It works even if I'm not a vampire like that.
- 1:06:13Shit's nasty. I'm getting the fuck away from
- 1:06:15you. Grace is panicking now.
- 1:06:17She wants to go find Beau and they're like that's and we need
- 1:06:20to stay in here until sunrise. Beau went out there alone.
- 1:06:24Hate to say he's probably a vampire or he's probably a Hank
- 1:06:26now. And he's, he's fucked.
- 1:06:28Yeah. Well, I think that they realize
- 1:06:31now that this is a vampire because that's where Andy's
- 1:06:32like, OK, this ain't hates. Like they needed an invitation
- 1:06:35to get in. That's a vampire thing.
- 1:06:37So she's going to give everybody the lowdown on the vampire war
- 1:06:40for this movie. Yeah, they can only be killed
- 1:06:42one-on-one. This isn't one of those where if
- 1:06:43you kill the master, everybody else is either killed or turned
- 1:06:46back human. Because we can't have an
- 1:06:48assistant. Vampire war in movies, people.
- 1:06:51Hey, but wooden stacks in garlic and sunlight and holy water
- 1:06:55still in holy water are still all consistent with this.
- 1:06:57Good thing we got preacher boy here.
- 1:06:59It's true, yeah. So yeah, they start prepping
- 1:07:02their tools and whatnot, and as they're going around doing
- 1:07:06stuff, they find a body in a big pool of dark looking liquid,
- 1:07:10drag him outside before he turns.
- 1:07:12And then as they're dragging him outside, they hear a vamp group
- 1:07:16that is much, much larger, quite a like everybody that left got
- 1:07:20turned. They're not really, it seems.
- 1:07:22Their own party out there. And I'm not going to lie, it
- 1:07:24looks like a fucking hoot. Like, like we got rhythmic in
- 1:07:27the center and he's doing his Irish dance, but everybody's
- 1:07:29just like circling around him and just like clapping along and
- 1:07:32he's like doing his song. The hive mind thing is really
- 1:07:34weird and those because everybody just like knows the
- 1:07:36lyrics. Exactly.
- 1:07:37Yeah, it's a good fucking. Time.
- 1:07:39Yeah, this is a fun way to play with the vampire lore.
- 1:07:41Like OK. I'm just going to say like, I
- 1:07:44know this movie, all vampire media is like vampire.
- 1:07:47It's not cool, man. It's not.
- 1:07:48You don't want to be 1. But every time I see it like I
- 1:07:51want to be a vampire, like it looks awesome.
- 1:07:55Counterpoint the argument. The tagline for Lost Boys is
- 1:08:00about how much fun it is to be a vampire.
- 1:08:01That's true. That movie is about how awesome
- 1:08:03it is to be a vampire. Like dirt bike off the fucking
- 1:08:05Cliff, trains coming at us no problem.
- 1:08:08Yeah, never grow old. Yeah, like honestly, I I just
- 1:08:11want to be a vampire after watching this.
- 1:08:15So now inside they're going to eat a garlic clove to try and
- 1:08:18weed out anybody that's a potential vampire in there.
- 1:08:21Such a fun play on that scene from the.
- 1:08:25Thing. I was thinking of the thing the
- 1:08:27entire time. And like Pearlene is like, I
- 1:08:30don't care for garlic. I'm like, too bad.
- 1:08:32And she like barely does it, but she doesn't she's she's.
- 1:08:35She knows it because they pull a fucking gun on.
- 1:08:38Her she's like, you are not a nice person.
- 1:08:41No, no, she's mad at Smoke because Smoke pulls a gun and
- 1:08:45then like you're an evil man and like Sammy's trying to stop him.
- 1:08:49He like busts him in the mouth. He's like, shut the fuck up.
- 1:08:51Like he goes bad there. But to be fair, just fucking eat
- 1:08:55it, man. Like it's reasonable if you like
- 1:08:58you are becoming suspicious if you're not going to eat.
- 1:09:00That, yeah. And then Delta Slim is the very
- 1:09:03last one to go, and he has an immediate reaction.
- 1:09:05And that's where it's a good subversion on the trope because
- 1:09:07he just, like, just choked on it.
- 1:09:09They drank too much. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:09:12All right, so now the man that was dragged outside.
- 1:09:16Wakes up because they realize, OK, well, none of us is a
- 1:09:19vampire. So that man outside was he
- 1:09:23actually turned this up? Was that blood?
- 1:09:24Because Mary and Stack didn't have time to go chew up anybody
- 1:09:27else. Yeah, they're like, so they go
- 1:09:28in and they check the puddle and the puddle is just spilled.
- 1:09:31Wine. Spilled wine.
- 1:09:32Yeah. And they start to go help the
- 1:09:36man who's waking up and very confused.
- 1:09:38He's like, I'll pay my tax. This suit, actually, he's not
- 1:09:41being polite like all the fake nice vampires out there.
- 1:09:43He's like, I'm going to fucking die, Lemian.
- 1:09:45Oh my God. Yeah, but he's too late.
- 1:09:46Cornbread gets him. Yeah.
- 1:09:49And then Beau approaches the door for Grace, and he's way too
- 1:09:52nonchalant because Cornbread is eating this man alive on the
- 1:09:55ground. And he's like, all right.
- 1:09:56You ready, Grace? It's like the he's the one like
- 1:10:00I, I can't get the connection to this guy right here.
- 1:10:02Like the remix is like, I don't know, there's something off
- 1:10:04about him. Like he's still like he's being
- 1:10:06too much of A vampire. He needs a real.
- 1:10:07Bad. Yeah, he's Yeah, too much of A
- 1:10:09newborn for this. Yeah, 'cause he's just like,
- 1:10:10he's got like the fucking eyes and his drooling, he's like, Oh
- 1:10:13yeah, cornbread. Yeah, he eats people.
- 1:10:15Like, come on, let's go. Yeah, come on, dude.
- 1:10:18Rimmick comes in. He is standing next to him and
- 1:10:21he's like, listen, I just want y'all to be part of my family.
- 1:10:24That music is beautiful. Help me see my ancestors.
- 1:10:27I want some more of that. Give me that.
- 1:10:29Give me that. Give me that again.
- 1:10:31I. Want it?
- 1:10:31He does the thing like look, this world doesn't want y'all,
- 1:10:34we want you. We're a big happy family
- 1:10:35everyday. Did you not see that dance?
- 1:10:37That shit was awesome. And then they're also like, no.
- 1:10:40And he goes, OK, well, I have all those memories.
- 1:10:42So I know that you've got a daughter at home, so I guess
- 1:10:44we'll go visit her. And that's, that's what
- 1:10:48activates Grace. And she is gonna be desperate to
- 1:10:51get out no matter what. And she's gonna put everybody
- 1:10:54else in danger because they're all getting their weapons ready.
- 1:10:59And she invites in the melee. Also Stack had his moment with
- 1:11:04smoke too. He tries to like convince him to
- 1:11:07become. Yeah.
- 1:11:07It's like, yeah, it'll be great. We can all be together.
- 1:11:08Yeah, yeah. So she says.
- 1:11:11Come on in, motherfuckers. And everybody comes in and it's
- 1:11:15just, it's a brawl. Yeah, this is where the screen
- 1:11:18gets wide and it's just a fucking like mayhem.
- 1:11:21Grace is burned to death. Annie is bit by stack.
- 1:11:25She holds smoke to his promise because she told him when they
- 1:11:28get webs together she's like, kill me before I turn.
- 1:11:30Yeah, she's and it's. Preemptively staked in the
- 1:11:32heart. And again, this is not like a
- 1:11:34typical horror movie where he would have hesitated.
- 1:11:38He was like, all right. But The thing is, like I
- 1:11:40thought, you have to wait for them to be a vampire to stake
- 1:11:42him. No, he just killed her.
- 1:11:45It went through the heart, so she couldn't turn to begin with.
- 1:11:48Yeah. I got you.
- 1:11:49Yeah, you can still kill a person.
- 1:11:53Delta decides that he's gonna sacrifice himself because he's
- 1:11:56like, look, the devil wanted me before earlier.
- 1:11:58He's like, if it's gonna get to any of you all, he has to go
- 1:12:01through me first. And they also realized Sammy is
- 1:12:03who Remix really going for, so they're trying to make sure that
- 1:12:06he can get out and Pearlene is bought is bit in the middle of
- 1:12:10all of this as well by Ramic. Sammy manages to run out as slim
- 1:12:15as like being sacrificed and Pearlene's dying.
- 1:12:18Pops out from the second story. Yeah yeah.
- 1:12:21Smoke is like distracting. He takes on Stack to like what
- 1:12:25amount? Yeah, happen.
- 1:12:26They're like little. It's a heavy moment and the two
- 1:12:28brothers are fighting. They're fighting.
- 1:12:31You mean Remic are fighting? Stack though, like he goes in to
- 1:12:34bite him, but he like there's like a little like steam thing
- 1:12:37like he's like he hesitates. Mojo Pouch.
- 1:12:39Mojo Pouch. It's the mojo pouch, was it?
- 1:12:41I really, I really believe it, I thought.
- 1:12:44It was because he had self-control.
- 1:12:45Like he was like, still like had a little bit of himself.
- 1:12:48No, I really think it was that mojo pouch.
- 1:12:50OK, well, we do see that he does have self-control.
- 1:12:53Though yeah we we know he does. But I think it I think he has
- 1:12:56more self-control once he doesn't have remic in his head.
- 1:12:58If he was a mojo, they gave him self-control.
- 1:13:02Sammy hits Remic with his guitar, which has like this
- 1:13:05silver piece inlaid on it, and that causes him, yeah, Froz's
- 1:13:10head and. That doesn't kill him though,
- 1:13:13but like. Smoke stake in him does, yeah.
- 1:13:15Smoke stake in him does, and then Sunrise kills the rest of
- 1:13:18the vampires. We didn't get much time with
- 1:13:22Vampire Purling. We even got like none of her
- 1:13:25really. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:26She just immediately died. Smoke gives Sammy the car keys.
- 1:13:30He's like, he's telling him, just go live your life, be
- 1:13:34happy, be safe. And then also, like I said,
- 1:13:37Sammy is sad about his guitar. He's like, that was Charlie
- 1:13:40Fatten's guitar. He goes, oh, it wasn't, that was
- 1:13:41our dad, I told. You that he's like yeah, stacked
- 1:13:44on me he's. Like, fucking lie.
- 1:13:46Like this is, again, it's some of the dichotomy between the
- 1:13:49twins, because Stack is the 1. He is the more empathetic 1.
- 1:13:53He is the one who wants there to be magic and happiness and yeah,
- 1:13:58once everyday, have a good time. Yeah, Smoke's the logical one.
- 1:14:01Yeah, So he gets his trunk from the back of the truck, rolls a
- 1:14:07cigarette and gets ready to kill a bunch of racist shitheads.
- 1:14:11He. Tries to roll a cigarette but
- 1:14:12his hands are too shaky. Poor guy.
- 1:14:14Giving him credit, yeah, he's a yeah.
- 1:14:17Yeah, so he's planning for the plan to arrive and we see them
- 1:14:20pull in and then as they're getting out of their vehicles,
- 1:14:23they start getting sniped from the field.
- 1:14:25Yeah, and I like this. He like he's shooting them.
- 1:14:28And then when he runs out of ammo, he had a little box, his
- 1:14:32crate, he was. So ready.
- 1:14:34Ready there? Boom, gets it open, starts
- 1:14:36mowing them down. There's a grenade in one of the
- 1:14:38trucks that's driving off and explodes it.
- 1:14:40He kills them all except for. Hogwood gets shot like through
- 1:14:44through his side and he's sitting there dying and smoke
- 1:14:48ass for a cigarette. Smoke got shot too.
- 1:14:50Yeah, smoke got shot too. Smoke is not long for this world
- 1:14:53in. The tummy.
- 1:14:55Cuz he took off his emoji pouch. Cuz he, he had one last thing to
- 1:14:58do and then he was going to go see his, his woman and his baby.
- 1:15:04He smokes a cigarette. And as he is smoking, Hogwood's
- 1:15:08blathering about something. He doesn't care because he's
- 1:15:10seeing Annie and their daughter. And she goes, you put out that
- 1:15:13cigarette, you can hold our daughter.
- 1:15:15And he snaps back for long enough to look at Hogwood.
- 1:15:18And Hogwood starts to say, honey, just shoot them a bunch
- 1:15:20in the head. And then we see him with his
- 1:15:23family. And yeah, see, that's the thing.
- 1:15:26Like it worked out for him because you get to be with like,
- 1:15:28because like earlier before and he's like, look, like I'm fine
- 1:15:31with going. I we have somebody waiting for
- 1:15:33us on the other side. So, you know, and he's like,
- 1:15:36this is him being at peace with dying and being with his family.
- 1:15:41I was supposed to say, I know it's a big moment right there.
- 1:15:44Oh, it's so bittersweet. And then?
- 1:15:48Sammy drives off and we see him. The end of the movie with him
- 1:15:51and then we're back to the beginning of the movie where he
- 1:15:55drives to the church, goes in, but this time we see he kept the
- 1:15:58guitar. Yep, and he's driving away and
- 1:16:01then. 60 years later, yeah, well.
- 1:16:04This is after credits. Yes, this is after credits.
- 1:16:07Oh, wait, no, no, this is during the credits, because we do see
- 1:16:10him actually playing during the credits here.
- 1:16:13But yeah, it's October 16th, 1992 in Chicago.
- 1:16:17Yep, he is playing at a club. We must assume it's his because
- 1:16:21it's called Purlins. He's thriving and after after
- 1:16:28closing time, he's told by the doorman that there's there's two
- 1:16:32guests that would like to come in.
- 1:16:34They're willing to pay extra, and when you know it, it's Stack
- 1:16:38and Mary. Yeah, this is cool.
- 1:16:40And they're like modernized too. So like they're in the 80s or
- 1:16:43not 80s, they're in the 90s. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, no, I
- 1:16:46was going to say this. Definitely early 90s.
- 1:16:48It's very reminiscent of like how I think of Fresh Prince, Bel
- 1:16:52Air, how Will Smith dressed. Yeah, so like, yes, Stack talks
- 1:16:57about like the whole thing that happened at night.
- 1:16:59Apparently Smokes spared him, but he made him promise to spare
- 1:17:03Sammy. He's like let you live out your
- 1:17:05life and he goes, you must be getting pretty close to the end
- 1:17:07of it. Wouldn't you like like to hang
- 1:17:09around, keep making music and things like.
- 1:17:13Yeah, this place is pretty shitty.
- 1:17:15And he said we have all your albums, you know, which is kind
- 1:17:19of sweet. I think he kept up with him.
- 1:17:21Yeah, Like, why not? I guess.
- 1:17:22Like he wanted to like let him live his life and not let him
- 1:17:25know that he's alive out there and worry.
- 1:17:27He was keeping his promise. Yeah, and that's not.
- 1:17:30The self-control that you were talking about.
- 1:17:32Yeah, exactly. And he's like, yeah, I don't
- 1:17:34like this electronic shit anymore, You know, I like the
- 1:17:36real, real like. Do you still have it in you and
- 1:17:39then? I like this point is like like
- 1:17:41if you heard recordings of the shit from back then, it sounds
- 1:17:43like shit and like it does but like man like this, this stuff
- 1:17:47back then was good son. It just sounds terrible now.
- 1:17:49Yeah, it's just the yeah, it's just the recordings of it and
- 1:17:51stuff, Yeah. So he he busts open the guitar.
- 1:17:54He had it repurposed. Yeah.
- 1:17:56And he plays the song that he played for him back then on that
- 1:18:00day and asked him if that was the best day that he had.
- 1:18:03He's like, that was the best day that I had.
- 1:18:05And then like, the guy's like, yeah, me too.
- 1:18:07Yeah, he's like, I wake up at least once a week paralyzed,
- 1:18:10still thinking about that. But until the sun went down,
- 1:18:12yeah, it was the best day of my life.
- 1:18:15And boom, that's a powerful ending right there.
- 1:18:17God I have goosebumps. Yeah, OK.
- 1:18:19And then there's an after after credit scene which is just Sammy
- 1:18:23at the church playing the Blues. Singing a bluesy version of this
- 1:18:26little Adam on. Yeah.
- 1:18:28All right, I'm 10. It's still 10.
- 1:18:30Yeah, still 10 for me too. Yeah, this movie is amazing.
- 1:18:34Talia. Talia was still in the music.
- 1:18:37Talia was still in a big time. Yeah, she was moving around a
- 1:18:39lot. Even the vampire, she's a little
- 1:18:41less scared of vampires now that we've been.
- 1:18:43She's a vampire herself. Yeah, she's a vampire.
- 1:18:46I think Talia, I think Talia would give this attention.
- 1:18:49She likes some good guitar. She does.
- 1:18:51She will get into some good bluesy guitar music.
- 1:18:54Yeah, I think so, yeah. Who's Zoe's ultimate warrior?
- 1:18:59She jumped up on the entertainment center.
- 1:19:01At one point in the middle, she. Did she's like I'm sinning?
- 1:19:05I'm a Sinner guys. That is a cat sin in this house,
- 1:19:08getting up on the entertainment. Center.
- 1:19:10They have free range of basically the whole fucking
- 1:19:13house. We just tell them not to get on
- 1:19:15the table. In the entertainment we like,
- 1:19:17don't get on, like don't get honest when we're eating.
- 1:19:19Don't get on the kitchen table or you get on the kitchen table.
- 1:19:22Don't get on the coffee table. Don't get on the coffee table,
- 1:19:25people. Don't get on the entertainment
- 1:19:26center, Don't get on the kitchen, the bathroom sink.
- 1:19:28Yeah, those are the only places that I don't want them, and
- 1:19:31those are the places that they want to be the most.
- 1:19:32I'm like you have everywhere else to be.
- 1:19:34Zoe was feeling herself. She's like, I'm, I'm.
- 1:19:37Zoe's ultimate warrior is standing because she goes
- 1:19:39against the wishes of her elders.
- 1:19:42She's like, I lied to you guys. I lied.
- 1:19:45I want to be up here. That's right.
- 1:19:47Like, what did you lie about, Zoe?
- 1:19:49We knew. OK, well who did you relate to?
- 1:19:56You know, I, I kind of related to Sammy because I remember my
- 1:20:00mom actually wanted me to do church music too.
- 1:20:03And there was a point in time I got into the Blues whenever I
- 1:20:06was right out of high school and I bought myself a guitar slide
- 1:20:09and I was learning how to play the Blues.
- 1:20:10Music too nice. Yeah, it was really cool.
- 1:20:14But just like him, that's not, I don't want to do that.
- 1:20:17It's just that's not a fun way to pursue that hobby.
- 1:20:20That's. Not the music that makes you
- 1:20:22feel the things that you need to feel to make good music.
- 1:20:24Exactly. Yeah, you know.
- 1:20:25It's different for everybody. Sammy was gifted.
- 1:20:30Yeah, more gifted than I was. Yeah, he can summon time and
- 1:20:35space. Yeah, I think you're a good
- 1:20:38musician, but I've never seen you do that.
- 1:20:40Well, you've not given me a chance.
- 1:20:43OK. Well, I'm challenging you.
- 1:20:45OK, OK. Who'd you relate?
- 1:20:48To man, probably Annie. I believe in that supernatural
- 1:20:53stuff. And I would be the first one at
- 1:20:55the bar after there was A tag to be like, are we sure it's not a
- 1:20:57vampire? Guys, are we sure?
- 1:21:00That hate a vampire. And I would let I would let
- 1:21:02little kids give me fake money in exchange for potions and sabs
- 1:21:07and stuff. Yeah, I think that's fair.
- 1:21:08You know, let the little kids learn about potions and all
- 1:21:11that. Yeah.
- 1:21:12OK, cool. All right.
- 1:21:16Do we have a new tagline? New.
- 1:21:18Tagline. Take a bite out of life.
- 1:21:29That's not bad. I'm trying to think of
- 1:21:34something. I felt like beating the devil,
- 1:21:35but using like music beat my brain can't.
- 1:21:40My brain can't make the connection there.
- 1:21:42Music beats the devil. Music beats the devil.
- 1:21:48Hook the devil with that bridge. Oh no, I don't know.
- 1:21:53This is a tough one to do. Sorry, now I'm now I'm just
- 1:21:57hearing Hook by Blues Traveler in my head.
- 1:22:00It's what brings you back, man. The chorus hook the devil.
- 1:22:05What? The chorus.
- 1:22:08This part's the structures of the song, the chorus, the hook.
- 1:22:10I didn't get that. Hook, as in like you know it
- 1:22:13killed him. It's a stretch that's a little
- 1:22:15stretchy. Well, fine then I'm.
- 1:22:18Just I'm being honest with you, all right?
- 1:22:25Yeah, the devil went down the quark still, actually.
- 1:22:31I like that one. I do like that one cuz yeah, I
- 1:22:40like that one. Devil went down the quark still.
- 1:22:42Yeah. OK, I'll see that then.
- 1:22:43OK. All right, do we have a dream
- 1:22:46sequel? That's a tough one.
- 1:22:51Oh, no. It'd be hard to do a sequel to
- 1:22:54this. Yeah, realistically speaking, I
- 1:22:56don't want this to be standalone, but let's think of
- 1:22:58something. No, actually, shout out to Chad,
- 1:23:01our friend Chad, also Bubby of the Patreon.
- 1:23:04Yeah, he he proposed A prequel and he did.
- 1:23:08I'm going to steal it. When did he say that?
- 1:23:10Yeah, it doesn't matter what. Yeah, I was going to say
- 1:23:13sometime. We saw him after after seeing
- 1:23:15sinners he wants a prequel of smoke and stack when they were
- 1:23:21in the war like finding world. He's like, I just want to see
- 1:23:24them like just killing a bunch of Nazis, which I understand
- 1:23:28Nazis are World War 2, but they make this a trip.
- 1:23:32Yeah, OK, so just killing a bunch of people in the war, that
- 1:23:35could be interesting. Yeah, that'd be a different
- 1:23:37movie. It would be a war movie.
- 1:23:38It'd be a different kind of movie, but I would watch.
- 1:23:40I would watch the shit out of it.
- 1:23:41Yeah, I'd, I'd be into that too. They're interesting characters
- 1:23:44to follow. I guess like having, well,
- 1:23:46that'd be cool also. I think part of the mystery of
- 1:23:49their past though, is also part of the the draw to the
- 1:23:52characters here. Like, you know, it adds to it,
- 1:23:55but there's a way you could do that for sure.
- 1:23:58It'd be a lot of fun. OK, cool.
- 1:24:01All right. Well, then with all of that out
- 1:24:02of the way, I think it's time for us to do reviews.
- 1:24:04OK, OK, so. Did you manage to put out a call
- 1:24:08for reviews? I did OK, yes, I did it early
- 1:24:12yesterday because I've been getting some of them late, yeah,
- 1:24:15and I have not been able to include some of them into the
- 1:24:18episodes. So to system.
- 1:24:19Pointing. Yeah, but I, I did it like
- 1:24:22yesterday in the morning. That way I made sure to give
- 1:24:25people time. So I I grabbed one from IMDb.
- 1:24:29It's a 3 out of 10. It's titled From Dusk Till Dawn
- 1:24:33for idiots. It's reminiscent of From Dusk
- 1:24:36Till Dawn insofar as it's one type of movie for about 2/3 of
- 1:24:40its runtime. And then some vampires show up
- 1:24:42and it becomes a goofy fight for survival in an abandoned club
- 1:24:45featuring the smarter half of a pair of criminal brothers.
- 1:24:48You put it that way. It actually like there's a lot
- 1:24:52of similarities. Between the two, I'm trying to
- 1:24:54argue but. You can't it really.
- 1:24:56Like honestly it's very similar. The difference being that From
- 1:25:02Dusk Till Dawn was self consciously, unapologetically
- 1:25:05trashy. Sinners tries to be all smug and
- 1:25:07profound and comes off as far stupider because of its
- 1:25:11pretensions. The legend of Robert Johnson
- 1:25:14gets masticated into pap and mixed into the kind of pseudo
- 1:25:18intellectual low brow gruel that Hollywood spent a decade trying
- 1:25:22to foist onto its nauseous customers.
- 1:25:26I disagree, I don't think it comes across as smug or holier
- 1:25:30than thou. I don't either.
- 1:25:31I think this. Movie is talking a lot about how
- 1:25:33there's good and bad in the world and you got to make your
- 1:25:37own decision and. This type of movie definitely
- 1:25:40could have done that if it was done by the wrong person.
- 1:25:42I think this person, this movie comes across as sincere to me.
- 1:25:45I don't really feel like there's anything hokey about it or like
- 1:25:48hand fisted. Even the bad stuff, like the
- 1:25:51smutty stuff doesn't actually feel smutty, you know what I
- 1:25:54mean? Like where they're being
- 1:25:55sinners. It's just like, this is our idea
- 1:25:57of what Santa knows. But what's bad about it?
- 1:26:00You know what I mean? I think, I think there's a
- 1:26:03little bit. There's definitely a different
- 1:26:06level of taste between the two movies.
- 1:26:07Yeah. And you know, like to some
- 1:26:10people maybe it is a little bit like up its own butt, I don't
- 1:26:13know. I don't really get that
- 1:26:14impression though myself. But I cannot argue that.
- 1:26:18From dusk till dawn comparison, that is.
- 1:26:20A perfect comparison that I want to argue that, but I can't
- 1:26:24actually argue it. I don't even know why you want
- 1:26:26to argue that that's perfect. I think Stack is like Dumber
- 1:26:30than Smoke. I think he's just like he's he's
- 1:26:33the bleeding heart and Smoke is the numbers guy.
- 1:26:36I. Don't think Quentin Tarantino's
- 1:26:38character is Dumber either. I think he's just, like, he
- 1:26:40can't control his impulses, you know, very similar types of
- 1:26:44things. I think just.
- 1:26:45Yeah, unnecessarily. Definitely goes hardcore in a
- 1:26:47completely different tone. All right.
- 1:26:50And then listener reviews. I do have one.
- 1:26:52OK, It's from, Tucker says. In fact, I'm doing remic for
- 1:26:55Halloween Should speak for itself.
- 1:26:57Rich, heartfelt and brutal. Nine O 10.
- 1:27:00Are you bringing that to Scare Fest this year, Tucker?
- 1:27:02That would be awesome, dude. Yeah.
- 1:27:04Are you going to play the guitar, banjo, whatever
- 1:27:06instrument he's playing? Shout out to another one of our
- 1:27:09patrons, Joe Freakatron. This is his.
- 1:27:11This is his name. Sent a shot of of Sinners
- 1:27:16cosplayers at Dragon. Playing the three of the
- 1:27:18vampires there and they actually had the instruments and were.
- 1:27:21Yeah, that was really cool. Yeah.
- 1:27:24Yeah. OK, cool.
- 1:27:25Well, I'm glad that Tucker, if you are going to be a remic, I
- 1:27:30hope you do bring that to Scarefest.
- 1:27:33You always nail the finer details of your cosplays.
- 1:27:35Seriously. Yeah, very.
- 1:27:38Tucker is really good at his cosplays.
- 1:27:41Yeah. OK, Cool.
- 1:27:42All right, Well, I'm glad you liked it.
- 1:27:43I'm glad that the consensus seems to be that everybody loves
- 1:27:46this movie except for that one guy who likes from Dusseldon
- 1:27:49more. Yeah.
- 1:27:50Which do you think? Yeah.
- 1:27:51Do. You forget about.
- 1:27:53Yeah, forget about. All right, so that's it for this
- 1:27:56one. I have to tell you guys if you
- 1:27:59wanna watch Leatherface 2017. Leatherface is the next movie on
- 1:28:03the show next week. That's right, we're talking.
- 1:28:06About You can watch it for free on Sling TV.
- 1:28:09Stream it on Peacock YouTube, Primetime Prime.
- 1:28:13It requires add on. Doesn't say what add on.
- 1:28:16That's the ones that you're listing there.
- 1:28:19The ones that you can get, that's the all prime premium.
- 1:28:22Is basically that OK? YouTube TV, you can also rent it
- 1:28:26from Google TV, Apple TV, or if anything, go at home.
- 1:28:29We're talking about it. I know we've been like kind of
- 1:28:31hyping how unexcited we are for this, but what if we end up
- 1:28:35liking it next week? It's a possibility.
- 1:28:38Yeah, we're gonna. We're gonna go into it open
- 1:28:40minds and open hearts help you guys do too, but.
- 1:28:42Give it a second shot. It's possible that this is going
- 1:28:45to be a terrible week. Terrible.
- 1:28:47But I think it's also fun when we have movies that we hate
- 1:28:50because, you know, sometimes, you know, it's a completely
- 1:28:53different type of episode where we have to make.
- 1:28:55Our own fun. Yeah, you know it can be good.
- 1:28:57Don't think that's going to be bad automatically.
- 1:28:59I'm not going, yeah, I'm not going to go into it with that.
- 1:29:01Just I'm nervous because it took us three tries to watch it the
- 1:29:05first time, so. Yeah, that's true.
- 1:29:07Well, we got we got to do it in one take this.
- 1:29:09Time do it, yeah. All right, so you know where to
- 1:29:11watch it. Yeah.
- 1:29:12If you want to do your homework, then go ahead and do that.
- 1:29:15Or you can just listen to us talk about it and suffer.
