Transcript
- 0:00Oh my, it's most things. Kenobi, where we always have the
- 0:05high ground. Hi everyone.
- 0:21Welcome to another episode of Most Things Kenobi, a podcast
- 0:24about Obi Wan Kenobi and all things Star Wars.
- 0:26I'm your host, Lauren. And I'm your host Leanne.
- 0:30And I have nothing nice to say today.
- 0:33I do. Happy Life Day.
- 0:37Yay. Oh.
- 0:39God, if you haven't seen the title of the episode yet, this
- 0:43is all about the Holidays special.
- 0:45The Star Wars Holiday Special. And it is special.
- 0:53Carrie Fisher said it best. She used to turn it on during
- 0:57holiday parties to make people go home.
- 0:59I would have left immediately if she turned it on.
- 1:01I can't believe I sat through. This.
- 1:04Thing I want my hour and a half of my life back.
- 1:07Please, my God. There's some, there's some
- 1:12moments that I was like, oh, OK. Also, just really quickly before
- 1:21we get into this too much, I just apologize.
- 1:24Again, my audio is probably gonna be pretty lousy.
- 1:26I'm traveling. I'm in a weird vaulted room.
- 1:29My voice is just echoing off everything and there's other
- 1:32people in the house, so I apologize for weird sounds in
- 1:35this audio. I want to preface everything by
- 1:38saying we know there are people out there who enjoy this.
- 1:41Yeah, I don't know how you enjoy it.
- 1:44I really don't. But I appreciate that you do.
- 1:48I did some research. I did too.
- 1:52I went to Reddit. Oh really?
- 1:56Yes, and people enjoy this movie because most of the positive
- 2:02reviews and the positive comments, at least on Reddit
- 2:05that I saw, were they were a kid when it was on TV, like when it
- 2:11played and they loved it. And now it's kind of like
- 2:15nostalgic for them. They understand how ridiculous
- 2:18and silly and over the top a lot of it is, but they like it
- 2:23because it reminds them of their childhood.
- 2:25So I'm never going to knock that because I have plenty of that,
- 2:28you know? But we're not watching it while
- 2:31we're kids. We're watching it as adults, you
- 2:33and I. So God.
- 2:37I've only ever seen clips up until we we forced ourselves to
- 2:41watch the entire thing. Yes, same.
- 2:43And I actually did watch the animated short that's in the
- 2:46middle. Separately I I've.
- 2:48I think. It's posted by itself.
- 2:50It was at least on Disney Plus, so I did watch that years ago
- 2:54without realizing it was part of the holiday special.
- 2:57So that's. I've seen that.
- 2:59I've seen pictures for sure. Oh yeah, the memes alone.
- 3:06I don't even know where to start, like there's just so much
- 3:09I don't understand. First of all, spoiler alert for
- 3:13anyone who's not seeing it, Okay there out.
- 3:16Of the line Okay. Why is B Arthur in it?
- 3:21That's the only part I liked. Oh.
- 3:23My God. That was the only part.
- 3:27I was like, OK, I can sit through an entire 3 minutes of
- 3:30be Arthur singing because it's be fucking Arthur it.
- 3:33Was so long, though, It went on way too long.
- 3:37Oh my God. It a lot of this went on too
- 3:40long, but yeah, I want to ask you, did you know Chewie had a
- 3:45wife and child? Only because I knew the general
- 3:49premise of this holiday special. I thought that was his little
- 3:53brother this whole time. Like my entire life when I've
- 3:58made fun of that little baby Chewy, I thought it was like,
- 4:03like kid brother. Oh.
- 4:06Man, So when they said like, it's Chewy's son, we're going to
- 4:09get you home to your wife and son.
- 4:10I was like, pardon me, that makes him and Hans adventures so
- 4:16much more absurd because he spends all of his time with Han
- 4:20and none of his time with this supposed wife and child.
- 4:24I know, I just kept thinking like he comes home one day a
- 4:27year. What an asshole.
- 4:30What? Come on, Chewie.
- 4:32Anyway, I I was under false pretenses thinking this whole
- 4:37time that that little weirdo, that little weird dude was his
- 4:44kid brother. Oh man, there's just so much
- 4:48weirdness about it because like, the little boy is played by
- 4:52Patti Maloney, so the boy is played by a girl, and Mala the
- 4:59wife is played by Nikki Morton, who's a man from Chicago.
- 5:04Sure so. And I I was like, the minute I
- 5:07saw Mala start walking, I was like, that's that's got to be a
- 5:12guy like the. I don't know.
- 5:13I maybe that sounds sexist of me, but like the body language
- 5:17to me was very similar to Chewie's.
- 5:19I was like, did Peter Mayhew play both?
- 5:22Both parts. But yes, he didn't.
- 5:25I have to say, they have a lovely, an absolutely lovely mid
- 5:29century modern house on Kashik, Kashik.
- 5:32Kashik. I don't think it is Kashik.
- 5:35Isn't it somewhere else? It's some other planet because.
- 5:39Is it really? But I thought they all lived in
- 5:42trees on that planet, On that planet.
- 5:44But it was. It was before.
- 5:46I think George Lucas had had come up with that and George
- 5:49Lucas didn't write this, so I don't think Kashik was even
- 5:53mentioned. It was some other planet that
- 5:55they put a blockade on and that's why they were all worried
- 5:59that Han and Chewie wouldn't get through.
- 6:00But. That doesn't make any sense at
- 6:02all. None of this makes any sense.
- 6:06But they do have a lovely, lovely home, you know.
- 6:10Yeah, I guess. I mean the.
- 6:13Furniture was very 1970s. Except for that weird porno
- 6:18chair that the grandfather. We need to fuck it, OK?
- 6:23Was that the grandfather or father with the underbite?
- 6:26Oh, it's the it's Chuy's father, Yeah.
- 6:28OK. Itchy.
- 6:31Yeah. What in what the fuck was that
- 6:36head thing with the woman? What does she say?
- 6:39She says I I wrote it down. It says I am your experience.
- 6:47So experience me. I'm sorry, What?
- 6:51What? She looked fabulous.
- 6:53The actress playing whatever this experience was, looked
- 6:57fabulous. In fact, she reminded me very
- 6:59much of Gaia, who was the female singer and star of the show, if
- 7:04you ask me, of the galactic star cruiser experience she sang
- 7:08during dinner. She was a she was a twilac.
- 7:11In fact, my best friend Derek, his husband Corey is like
- 7:15besties with Gaia now in real life, which is hilarious.
- 7:18They see each other at the parks.
- 7:19She came running over to him. It was this whole thing.
- 7:22Anyway, this woman reminded me of Gaia in the way of her
- 7:25showmanship with the the dress and the hair and the voice and
- 7:29all that. But the porno feel of it was
- 7:31very seedy, right? And he.
- 7:33Kept like hitting the rewind button and over and getting all
- 7:37like. Stimulated I.
- 7:39Was horrified. I couldn't believe what I was
- 7:41seeing. It really looked like the thing
- 7:44that people who get like perms or their hair done sit under the
- 7:48hairdressing chair from like the 90s.
- 7:50You know that the whole thing was fucking weird.
- 7:55It was. It was bizarre and it was creepy
- 7:58that that was in there for something that was really geared
- 8:01towards kids. I thought, yeah, she was
- 8:04absolutely stunned. I think is it Diane Carroll or
- 8:07Deanne Carroll? Not sure, but I I thought she
- 8:11looked fabulous. The actually gorgeous.
- 8:13And a beautiful voice. True.
- 8:14Absolutely beautiful voice, yes. What the hell.
- 8:17It was so weird. And the whole thing with like,
- 8:22Chuy's wife, I guess. What was her name?
- 8:25Marla. Mala.
- 8:27Mala. Whatever.
- 8:30She watched like the galactic version of Julia Child.
- 8:33Yes. What was your thought on that?
- 8:37I couldn't Fast forward through that shit faster.
- 8:41But she did a whole stir, stir, stir, stir, whipster, whip,
- 8:45whip, stir. I wrote it down, Sir, Sir, Sir.
- 8:50Come on now, Sir, Sir, Sir. Stir, whip, stir, whip.
- 8:54Again, though, it like it went on for so long.
- 8:58Way too long. It goes on so long it loses the
- 9:01joke. It just becomes, like, painful
- 9:03after a while. Yeah, I liked her wig.
- 9:08Was that a man or a woman? As a man.
- 9:10OK, that's what I thought. Not that any of it matters, but
- 9:13it left me wondering like what am I actually what?
- 9:16What am I looking at? Like, so he was.
- 9:20I think that was the one who is Harvey Korman.
- 9:24That actor played like multiple people, 'cause he's from The
- 9:29Carol Burnett Show. Oh, well, that OK, That kind of
- 9:32ties in, 'cause that was the that was from the time.
- 9:35Yeah, Harvey Korman was had been on the Carol Burnett Burnett
- 9:38Show and he did multiple characters, so he was that one.
- 9:42He was the I I didn't even watch it.
- 9:46I really had to Fast forward the part where Lumpy was putting
- 9:49together the. I don't even know what that was
- 9:52the switchboard I was watching some how to video which it was
- 9:57like. That was really bad.
- 10:00This whole thing, I know they wanted it to have a variety show
- 10:04feel. But it was bad.
- 10:06It was. It was just like like when
- 10:09someone forces you to watch a YouTube video you don't want to
- 10:12watch. And we had to watch the whole
- 10:14YouTube video on how to put together this thing.
- 10:18It was fucking awful. Like, yeah, it's.
- 10:20Unwatchable. The point in the like odds and
- 10:25ends shop, the guy that's in there, the shop owner and like
- 10:31the Empire walks in and that whole thing.
- 10:35I was like, where is this even going?
- 10:37Because like, it went on too long.
- 10:39He's trying to sell stuff. The Empire's being a stick up
- 10:42the ass as they usually are. I mean, they kept, they kept
- 10:46that good. But like at one point the Empire
- 10:51declares martial law. Yes.
- 10:55That's over the top, even for the fucking empire.
- 10:59Yeah. And then B Arthur sang a song
- 11:01about it. So.
- 11:02I know. God.
- 11:04God bless Bea Arthur. You know what's really weird
- 11:07about that? That shop owner?
- 11:09It's Art Carney. And he was in The Honeymooners.
- 11:13Like, the cast is just the most bizarre combination of people
- 11:18ever. Bea, Arthur, Harvey Korman, Art
- 11:21Carney. Like, what the fuck?
- 11:23I felt like I would dropped acid and fell off the planet.
- 11:27Maybe that's the maybe. That was the point, and we
- 11:31missed it because we weren't born yet.
- 11:33I've honestly seen Grateful Dead concerts that made more sense
- 11:37than this stupid show. But it was sorry, You know what
- 11:42was so awkward for me? So, so like, they they go to the
- 11:46main characters. The main characters make cameos
- 11:49in the own their own fucking story.
- 11:51And like, we all know how terrible Mark Hamill looks in
- 11:56this, right? Oh yeah.
- 11:58With the eyeliner, the hair he. Had to, though he was still in
- 12:02reconstructive surgery at the time.
- 12:04I know, but him? OK?
- 12:07Luke Skywalker saying. So what's up?
- 12:11Really weird. It weirded me out.
- 12:13I don't want my hero from the Galaxy saying what's up?
- 12:16Oh man, it was too pedestrian for me.
- 12:20I couldn't take What's up. Hey, Vader, what's up?
- 12:24He basically told her to smile more too.
- 12:26Did you catch that? Like, I can't.
- 12:29This is awful. The whole thing, Luke.
- 12:31No, painful. R2 was fine.
- 12:35R2 was still doing R2 things and that's great.
- 12:39Yeah. Oh man, Harrison Ford looked
- 12:41like he was in physical pain the entire.
- 12:44He did look good though. I mean, he's Harrison Ford is at
- 12:47the top of his looks at this point in the game and he looked
- 12:50really good and actually I really enjoyed him and Chewy
- 12:52because like Han and Chewy are just adorable together and they
- 12:56hug and he's like happy life day, pal.
- 12:59Yeah, the hug was pretty adorable.
- 13:01That was cute. I I really I melted a little bit
- 13:03at that. Yeah, it was very sincere, and
- 13:06I'm sure it's because they were clinging to their own personal
- 13:10friendship to get through this nightmare that they were this
- 13:13living that they were trapped in.
- 13:15Leah looked fabulous. She did.
- 13:17Carrie Fisher looked absolutely stunning in this.
- 13:20Did you notice her one bun is larger than the other.
- 13:23It was lopsided. It was great.
- 13:24I. Did I did?
- 13:25Yeah, one one was, one was a little bit bigger than the
- 13:28other. And I'm sure, she said.
- 13:29Leave it. Fucking leave it.
- 13:32OK, one other thing. What the fuck was Jefferson
- 13:36Starship? Do.
- 13:37Do. I would say all of the quote
- 13:44interludes with the dancers, and I fast forwarded through all of
- 13:49it. I mean too.
- 13:51It's too much. It was so fucking weird.
- 13:55I guess it was kind of like Cirque du Soleil maybe?
- 13:58Barely. Barely.
- 13:59The minute there was a man with tail feathers dancing in my heel
- 14:03boots, I was just like, I I am too tired to watch this right
- 14:09now. I watched it really late at
- 14:11night and I was like, I don't have the patience right now.
- 14:13I had to Fast forward through basically all of it.
- 14:17I I would stop to check in to see where the story was.
- 14:21The the amount of Wookie screaming at each other is to
- 14:28the point where I'm just like, I don't want to watch this.
- 14:32This isn't helping me. This isn't helping the story.
- 14:36I don't know what they're saying.
- 14:37It's not enough inflection for me to know what they're saying.
- 14:41Like, at one point, doesn't Mala like TuneIn?
- 14:44And does she talk to either the shop owner or it's Leia or
- 14:49somebody and they say hello and she's like and it's like, I knew
- 14:54that was a hello, but I could discern nothing else.
- 14:59It was terrible, so much of it. Yeah, there was no story.
- 15:04There's no fucking story. And I heard, I was watching some
- 15:09research videos on YouTube afterwards, just kind of like
- 15:12Orient myself with this and like figure out what the hell was
- 15:16going on. Why did they even bother?
- 15:19And one of the writers, I don't know which one, I think it was
- 15:21Rod Warren. I think he was the main writer.
- 15:24He was saying that now you can't play with Star Wars.
- 15:28You know, now you have to follow all the rules.
- 15:30And there's really specific rules and you don't have the
- 15:32freedom to play around like you used to when he wrote the
- 15:36script. I'm like, man, this isn't
- 15:38playing around like this is just straight up bad.
- 15:41Like bad is bad. Whether or not you feel like
- 15:43you're being constricted or not, like this is just straight
- 15:47terrible. It it has no fucking plot.
- 15:51All the interludes are bizarre beyond description, like, and
- 15:56not even in a way that you can laugh, you know, 'cause there's
- 15:59plenty of stuff from the 70s. This fucking like a labyrinth is
- 16:02another great example. It's fucking weird, but you can
- 16:05forgive it because there's something more to it.
- 16:08Plus totally. Yeah, well, bizarre in and of
- 16:12itself, but we tolerate it because, yes.
- 16:15Exactly. But this?
- 16:16It was like, I never want to see this again.
- 16:19It wasn't even funny. It was just straight painful.
- 16:23Honestly, I will. Tell you what, I tried to get
- 16:26from it through the life day stuff.
- 16:29I kind of like that There's a tree of life.
- 16:33They honor it. They honor family.
- 16:35Like that's all good. Like that I can get down with,
- 16:38right? And in fact, did you happen to
- 16:39look up anything about Life Day? No, I didn't.
- 16:44In order to get something from this, I looked up information on
- 16:48Life Day and I have some stuff from Wikipedia.
- 16:52In Case No one else is aware, this is what it says.
- 16:56I'm going to have to read it because it's a lot because the
- 16:58wills are involved. Who knew, really?
- 17:01Yeah, interesting. So long after the Galactic Civil
- 17:05War and the Rebellion one over the Empire, a Will was tasked by
- 17:09his fellow Wills with recording galactic history for the journal
- 17:13The Journal of the Wills. This one Will grew dissatisfied
- 17:17with how it was being written and stated that they would
- 17:19instead write in a personal journal about how Chewy and his
- 17:23family celebrated Life Day. OK, the Dissatisfied Will thus
- 17:28compiled some notes on the matter, and when the Will
- 17:31writing the journal began recording the events following
- 17:33the Battle of Yavin, he offered to share the notes on how the
- 17:36rebel heroes helped Chewbacca return to Kashyyyyyyyk to see
- 17:39his son Lumpy for Life Day. So it was later dubbed Kashik,
- 17:44even though it wasn't at the time of.
- 17:46Recording. So during the First Order
- 17:50Resistance War, Chewy took Ray back to Kashik to celebrate Life
- 17:53Day with his son. Chewy also celebrated the
- 17:56holiday while on the planet of Batu.
- 17:58OK, so that was is that in like a comic book or something?
- 18:04It just in, I don't know, just Wikipedia.
- 18:08Just that a Will was tasked with writing stuff on the Galactic
- 18:13War and he's like, fuck it. I'm going to write about Chewie
- 18:15and and his family and this was like part of what he wrote about
- 18:20what the fuck. Leia's words really resonated
- 18:26with me. I also wrote them down because
- 18:28it was probably the only good thing in all of this.
- 18:30So after at the end, when they're all with Chewie, they
- 18:33all show up and they all hug. And she says to like the people,
- 18:37the the Wookies. No matter how different we
- 18:39appear, we're all the same in our struggle against the powers
- 18:42of evil and darkness. Great.
- 18:45But you you took 3000 miles to get there and and none of it was
- 18:50good. I know it like the best part
- 18:53like you said was once they started celebrating that was
- 18:56more interesting and. 'Cause there was like a the orb,
- 19:00they go to the tree together. It's kind of very nice.
- 19:04It's a nice tribal thing that I could see a race doing in the in
- 19:09the Galaxy. Yeah, I really enjoyed.
- 19:12Well, I guess I really enjoyed it, 'cause everything was so bad
- 19:16before. That part seemed even better.
- 19:19And I loved, as weird as it was, like listening to Carrie Fisher
- 19:23sing. And the message was really nice,
- 19:26but it was the only thing of substance in the whole hour and
- 19:2940 minutes or whatever it was so.
- 19:31Yeah, if they cut down all of the nonsense it probably would
- 19:35have been a 25 minute movie and I'd have been all right with it.
- 19:41Yeah, And then and then the fucking.
- 19:43First the 1st order help help me and then the Empire shows up at
- 19:48the house and like raids the house and they tear apart the
- 19:53bantha toy. And I was so mad.
- 19:57Oh, I fast forwarded through that.
- 19:58I wondered why the Bantha's head was not attached.
- 20:02They tore apart the fucking Panther toy.
- 20:04I was so mad they took the head right off of it.
- 20:08Oh, that's sad. It's really.
- 20:10Sad. I know.
- 20:11And Limpy like put it in his bed and covered it with cover like
- 20:14the little blanket. Yeah, I saw that and he, like,
- 20:17kissed it. Put the blanket on.
- 20:20Yeah. Also, just like there's so many,
- 20:23there's so many elements of like the time in there.
- 20:28One of the cringey moments, one of the many was when Art Carneys
- 20:33character who I can't remember the shock keeper guy.
- 20:36Yeah, she brings. He brings gifts, you know, to
- 20:39everybody. One of them is porn for the Yup,
- 20:43grandfather. You gotta give the old man
- 20:45something. There's a box of trash for the
- 20:48kid, the porn for the grandpa, and then the mom gets Jefferson
- 20:53Starship. In a box, yes.
- 20:55But he won't give it to her until she gives him a kiss.
- 20:58I was like EW. Fucking weird.
- 21:01Fucking weird, dude. It's weird.
- 21:05You know what I noticed? They have all this high tech
- 21:08shit. We're in a Galaxy far, far away,
- 21:11and one of the Empire people pull out a walkie-talkie.
- 21:16What's the antenna with the? Pick with the antenna.
- 21:19Yep, Yep, I said what in? Sam, somebody made a mistake.
- 21:24Please at least make it look like a handheld device.
- 21:27But like, don't pull the antenna out it.
- 21:30Was so long. It was so long.
- 21:32Antenna. Oh God, it's so bad.
- 21:40And the extreme close-ups of like lumpy especially, yes.
- 21:46But like why it's. Really painful.
- 21:51I did like how haunt. Like Lumpy jumped into his arms
- 21:54and he held him like a baby on his hip.
- 21:56I was like, why the fuck is this guy's name Lumpy?
- 22:00There's a whole name Lump, Awaru.
- 22:04Honestly, it was like lumpy, chewy, and itchy.
- 22:06Like what other weird body behaviors can we pick?
- 22:15Cellulite. Oh man, I just love how he has
- 22:26an underbite. The grandpa or the dad or the
- 22:29uncle, The the that man in the house it.
- 22:32Was hard to look at, honestly. It was kind of like a dislocated
- 22:35jaw. Surprised they didn't have like
- 22:38drool coming out for extra effect.
- 22:39Is that terrible? I feel bad.
- 22:46Well, I guess we do need to know that George Lucas equally hates
- 22:50this thing. Well, thanks, George.
- 22:55Yeah, I guess he and the producer gave approval to, I
- 22:59think it was CBS to do this. And he asked all the original
- 23:04cast to do it, like George Lucas is the one.
- 23:06Mark Hamill said that at least, I don't know.
- 23:08He said that George asked him specifically and he said I don't
- 23:11want to do this. I don't think it's a good idea.
- 23:14And then George was like, would you do it as a favor to me for
- 23:16licensing? Because they want to do
- 23:18merchandising. And so they're trying to keep
- 23:20Star Wars in front of people's, you know, front of mind.
- 23:24Because there was, I don't know, a couple a year, a year or two
- 23:27in between when Star Wars was released and when Empire came
- 23:32out. So he wanted to be able to do
- 23:34merchandise sales because that was the only way George Lucas
- 23:37made money. Because the studio owned the
- 23:39rights to the original Star Wars.
- 23:42Oh God, it was just so bad. But even he hated it.
- 23:46He said somewhere. I think it was at like a
- 23:48celebration. He said if he had the time, you
- 23:52would track down every copy and smash it with a sledgehammer.
- 23:58George, if you want help, give me a call.
- 24:03I could find. And it's too late now.
- 24:05It's free on YouTube now, so. True.
- 24:09Speaking of merchandise, they have a ton of merchandise on
- 24:14Disney right now selling. Stuff special.
- 24:17Yeah, 2023 must have life day merge and it's all very 1960s,
- 24:24nineteen 70s, mid century modern.
- 24:26They've got that like pop culture font you know, that they
- 24:30would use for this time and age. You can get one of the red robes
- 24:36that the wookies wore. There are pins for the
- 24:40collectors out there. They've got pop up books.
- 24:44They've got pop up ornaments. They have a life day cookbook,
- 24:49The Official Recipe from A Official Holiday Recipes from a
- 24:53Galaxy Far, Far Away. I mean, she was making bantha
- 24:57loin or something like that. I don't want to.
- 24:59Eat yeah yeah. There is also Life day food
- 25:02available at Galaxy's Edge during the holidays, which
- 25:07involve the blue Orbs, which are made of cheese.
- 25:10Life Day Cheese Branch Like a branch of a tree.
- 25:17There's also drinks available. It's just a lot of.
- 25:21They're trying to lean in a lot of.
- 25:22Stuff. Yeah, they're leaning in on
- 25:24something that nobody wants to lean in on.
- 25:29You know, just because you throw money behind it, it's not going
- 25:33to make it good, Disney. No.
- 25:36In fact, you can get yourself a light up orb, which looks like
- 25:39the only thing I would enjoy, but it looks just like the moon
- 25:43display. Like that you you purchased me
- 25:45as a gift one time. It looks exactly the same, it's
- 25:48just not blue. Honestly though, I don't think I
- 25:51would want anything in my house to remind me of this movie.
- 25:54No, no, that's the thing that. So I'm trying to see it from
- 25:59like maybe someone who grew up and watched it and it was like
- 26:03wow, this is really cool. I get to see my favorites on TV,
- 26:06but I it's a stretch. So if there's anyone out there
- 26:10that actually feels this way, let us know, because we want to
- 26:14see what you see. Please help us see what you see.
- 26:21Yeah, I mean, I'm you're being way kinder than I am.
- 26:25I'm sorry. Yeah.
- 26:26I don't mean to like shit on people's things that.
- 26:28They no, it's a terrible movie. It's terrible.
- 26:30It's terrible and it's terrible, but.
- 26:32Yeah, I mean, I can make excuses for a lot of stuff.
- 26:35I mean, I watched Mandalorian and I don't really like it.
- 26:39This was this to me was it was excruciating.
- 26:44I texted you, I think, in the middle of it, and I was just
- 26:46like, what the fuck? It's worse than I thought.
- 26:48Like, I knew it was going to be cheesy, but it was actually much
- 26:52worse than I thought. The thing is, I can do cheesy.
- 26:55I do cheesy all the time and I I can get into it.
- 26:57I can get into campy. I can get into, like over the
- 27:01top. As long as you know to not
- 27:04expect anything less or more, you're good.
- 27:07But like I expected more, I got way less.
- 27:14No, I expected less and I got way less than less.
- 27:17That's what I meant to say. I think all the actors are
- 27:22pretty embarrassed by it. I've seen compilation videos of
- 27:26them on talk shows and they're all just like, oh God, I can't,
- 27:28I can't talk about it. I don't think we're allowed to
- 27:30talk about it. I think we're supposed to deny
- 27:32that it exists anywhere. I think George Lucas gave the
- 27:37OK, but then had no more. He was busy filming Empire
- 27:42Strikes Back, so he had no more involvement and so when it went
- 27:45out, he must not have approved it.
- 27:48I don't know why you wouldn't ask to see it before it goes
- 27:51out, but it was far worse than he thought too, and I think he
- 27:55was pretty upset by the whole thing.
- 27:58But I'm sure it works to sell some merchandise for him.
- 28:03Honestly, I'm amazed. I'm amazed that it didn't
- 28:06tarnish Star Wars in general, that people still went and saw
- 28:09Empire Strikes Back and loves it.
- 28:12It's. Wild I I would like to know the
- 28:15societal thought process at the time.
- 28:18Why didn't it knock it down? If you saw it when it came out,
- 28:23send us messages. Tell us what your experience is
- 28:26like. It's like we said at the
- 28:27beginning, we're new to this. Obviously we're coming at it
- 28:31with. A.
- 28:31Shit Ton of material for Star Wars that exists now.
- 28:35When it came out, only Star Wars, that was it.
- 28:40And this even kind of launched the Extended Universe.
- 28:45There were. There were.
- 28:46Ewok movies, there were like lots of novelizations.
- 28:50That was something that I did come across that was interesting
- 28:52that it was kind of the launching of the the Extended
- 28:57universe, which is now Legends. But there was a variety of
- 29:02quality at the time. So it was like something like
- 29:05Timothy Zahn's books. Bestsellers considered very like
- 29:10they were excellent quality and then there would be like comics
- 29:14and other books or movies that were just atrocious.
- 29:19And Disney, when they took over, they they made everything,
- 29:23Legends, because they wanted to quality control.
- 29:26What came after that, and I know that angered a lot of people,
- 29:30but at least now there's a little more consistency, I guess
- 29:34I would say, in the quality of stuff that comes out, maybe, I
- 29:39don't even know. It's rough.
- 29:41It's rough out there though. But listen, we're free to we're
- 29:45free to like what we like and not like what we not like, at
- 29:49least in this corner. Yes, Yeah, If you like this
- 29:52movie, good for you. I'm glad.
- 29:54Yeah, it's everyone's allowed to have what they want.
- 29:59And honestly, OK, so if you had to pick a favorite moment,
- 30:02please try hard. I really.
- 30:07Like seeing Mark Hamill? Yeah, he did.
- 30:10He did his damn best. I was watching his face.
- 30:15Yeah, I was watching his face really closely to see what he
- 30:18really felt. And he did a very good job
- 30:20knowing that he really didn't want to do it.
- 30:23He rose to the occasion, especially considering he had
- 30:25just had reconstructive facial surgery.
- 30:28This is true. And I did like the end with the
- 30:31the Tree and Leia singing I. Think that's my favorite part
- 30:36because it was that had the most substance.
- 30:38You said it and I need something and that was it.
- 30:42That was the little crumb. That was it.
- 30:45It was at the end. It was a rough go, but you know
- 30:48what? Happy Life Day, Lauren.
- 30:53Thank you, Leanne. Happy Life Day to you too.
- 31:03OK. Our question for our listeners.
- 31:06What were your first thoughts when you saw the Star Wars
- 31:09Holiday Special? Did you like it?
- 31:11Did you not like it? Did you see it when it first
- 31:14came out? What was that experience like or
- 31:17was it later? Did you experience it like we
- 31:19did much further down the line? Tell us all about your life day
- 31:23experience. Yes.
- 31:27Oh my God, Next week's episode. I'm excited.
- 31:34I probably shouldn't be, but we're going to talk about the
- 31:39Red Flag moments throughout Anakin's pre Vader existence.
