- 0:51Speaker 1: A b he. Y'all welcome this week's show. We will
- 1:02continue discussing prayer today incredibly important, this being the week
- 1:07of ash Wednesday, the week we begin Lent. What are
- 1:11we supposed to do during Lent? Prayer, fasting and alms deeds?
- 1:18We have to do that. We have to pray. Not
- 1:22everyone has to fast, remember if you're in very poor health,
- 1:25if you're under a certain age or over a certain age,
- 1:29But you can do other penances in place of fasting.
- 1:36And it's you know, it's a good thing to do.
- 1:38It's a good, very good thing to fast though, if
- 1:40you can. But prayer we absolutely have to do. And
- 1:44when it comes to alms deeds, yes, it's wonderful to
- 1:46give money to the poor, it's wonderful to give food
- 1:49to a food pantry, to a charity, whatever. But that
- 1:54can also mean doing things helping family members, helping strangers,
- 1:59just you know, small actions of basically showing the love
- 2:04of God to others. But so the first and the
- 2:07third are somewhat flexible. The second is not. We have
- 2:11to pray. So if you can try to pray the
- 2:15stations of the Cross daily, if you forget a day,
- 2:18don't you know, don't get too mad at yourself. That's
- 2:21not going to accomplish anything. I mean, certainly, pray to
- 2:24our Father daily, Pray your daily Rosary if you can
- 2:27at least one decade, Divine mercy, chaplet, wonderful Holy face, shoulder, wound,
- 2:35precious blood. I mean, all those are you know, excellent
- 2:37prayers to say Anima Christy. But make sure to just
- 2:42set aside some time for prayer daily during Lent. That's
- 2:47really that that also becomes almost a form of fasting
- 2:53with time. So anyway, but before we do that, we're
- 2:56going to wrap up the questions and answers from the
- 3:00Protestants to the priests and radio replies on confession and
- 3:04buoy to Protestants hate confession. I they may hate confession
- 3:09more than just about anything, because, I mean, Jesus mandated
- 3:14the role of the priest. The first thing Martin Luther
- 3:18did was deny the role of the priest. You cannot
- 3:21have confession without a priest to hear your confession. You
- 3:26can go through the motions of doing the Eucharist, which
- 3:29is you know what Protestants just call communion or the
- 3:33Lord's Supper with grape juice and it's actually fairly blasphemous
- 3:37if they know what they're doing. Most do not. But
- 3:42any Protestant who goes through the emotions of what is
- 3:47the Holy Eucharist in the Catholic Church in say a
- 3:50Methodist or a Baptist, etc. Church with grape juice and
- 3:55a minister who certainly is not in the role of
- 3:59the priest who can turn bread and wine into the
- 4:01body of blood of Christ, is actually committing a blasphemy
- 4:08very very similar to what Satanists do. Satanist satan worshipers
- 4:12have their own, you know, black Mass, which denigrates and
- 4:16blasphemes the Holy Eucharist. Protestants, unknowingly hopefully are doing the
- 4:23same when they have communion in a Protestant church. Any
- 4:29Catholic who has been properly catechised, even if he or
- 4:35she should leave the church, should start screaming their head
- 4:38off if they're in a Protestant church and they start
- 4:42mimicking the Eucharist what Father Sparaga would have called the
- 4:46ape of the church. That's what Protestantism miss. You know,
- 4:50how a monkey imitates a human being. The Protestant Church
- 4:54apes the Catholic Church. That there's also, you know, been
- 5:00writing about how the Antichrist would be the ape of
- 5:02the true Christ, an imitator, a pretender. Let's not confuse
- 5:07those two things. But guess it is. Communion so called
- 5:13in a Protestant church is actually quite blasphemous, really very
- 5:20very bad. But they'll go through the motions of that.
- 5:23They absolutely deny a priest can forgive sins, even though
- 5:26Jesus said to his apostles, those who sins you forgive,
- 5:29they are forgiven. Those who sins you retain, they retained.
- 5:31And what you bind on earth will be bound in heaven,
- 5:34and what you loose on earth to be loosed in heaven.
- 5:36And I give you the Kingdom of the keys to
- 5:38the Kingdom of Heaven, etcetera, etcetera. Jesus absolutely established the priesthood.
- 5:45Protestants hate that, absolutely hate it. They will they'll take
- 5:52examples out of the Bible where people prayed and laid
- 5:54hands on people when they need healing a lot of times.
- 5:57They don't have an issue with that. You know, Jesus
- 6:00actually said that to his priests, his apostles, and that
- 6:04is a power given to the priests through the sacrament
- 6:07of anointing. The sick. What's the other word for it.
- 6:13It's not last rites anymore. Anyway, it doesn't really matter.
- 6:15I've done a whole show on that. That's really a
- 6:18priestly functioned Protestants will imitate that in good faith, and
- 6:22you know, what are you going to do. They're praying
- 6:23for somebody's health and well being. You know, we can't
- 6:26have too much of a problem with that. But they
- 6:28never say that a human being can forgive someone's sins
- 6:32in the stead of God, even though that's exactly what
- 6:35the Bible says. I mean, even though that's exactly what
- 6:39the Bible says. That's the one sacrament I mean some
- 6:42most Protestant churches have baptism. Most Protestant churches still, to
- 6:48some extent, recognize holy matrimony. Most Protestant churches do have some,
- 6:57as I said, fairly blasphemous representation of the Eucharist. Most
- 7:03Protestant churches will pray for the sick. They will not
- 7:08ordain a priest, obviously, but they do have a form
- 7:13of confirmation. In the Methodist Church, I was confirmed into
- 7:16the Methodist Church. That meant absolutely nothing. Actually, it was
- 7:21like after school we met for a couple of months
- 7:26did Bible lessons. I kept asking, Okay, for a Methodists,
- 7:29there's got to be a method. Could someone explain to
- 7:31me the method. Nobody had any idea what it was.
- 7:34I mean, they have a book of like their doctrine,
- 7:36but it doesn't really tell them a whole lot because honestly,
- 7:38their doctrine doesn't make a whole lot of sense, and
- 7:43so much of it's conflicted, and I mean, it really
- 7:46makes no sense whatsoever. And then they handed me a
- 7:49certificate and said I was a member of the Methodist
- 7:51Church and I needed to register and they'd keep up
- 7:55with the tithes that I paid when I got older.
- 7:57And I was like ten, you know, I didn't know
- 7:58what I was doing. That's not confirmation. Confirmation is in
- 8:02a Catholic Church when you actually go through the catechises
- 8:07or the r Ciao Cia whatever they call it now,
- 8:10and the priest with you know, two witnesses at least
- 8:14the priest then seals you as a member of the
- 8:16Catholic Church with the chrism oil and you receive the
- 8:20fullness of the Holy Spirit. So they're out of all
- 8:23the sacraments. They're just like two that Protestants absolutely will
- 8:27not do. And that's the ordination of a priest, even
- 8:32though you know the Anglicans and such do imitate that
- 8:37again without any authority, but probably in fairly good faith,
- 8:41I guess. But now they're starting to ordain lesbians and such,
- 8:45so I can't say that for sure. But and some
- 8:50again Anglicans do will vicar whatever will hear confession, but
- 8:56he will not claim, at least the best of my knowledge,
- 8:59they don't claim the ability to forgive sins in the
- 9:03stead of God. They just say they're helping someone through
- 9:06their issues, that kind of thing. And they probably do
- 9:09that in other churches too. But and they hate the
- 9:12sacrament of confession. That's I mean, you want to get
- 9:17a Protestants start screaming at you, say you you go
- 9:20into confession. No man can forgive sins. Well Jesus said
- 9:23he could. I mean, so you're arguing right here, let
- 9:26me put up you know, I mean Book of James
- 9:29here and here you can read it. You can read
- 9:31it yourself. Well, I don't believe that. But I thought
- 9:34the Bible was your sole authority. Well we interpreted it differently. Okay,
- 9:39So you deny the clear words of what Jesus said
- 9:44and say that those that's your highest authority. Great, no
- 9:48wonder you're so screwed up on divorce. I mean, you
- 9:50deny the clear words of what Jesus said, and you know,
- 9:53really worship a man made doctrine that has no validity.
- 9:57You don't have a real Bible. Your Bible's counterfeit because Martin,
- 10:01Luther and Calvin and all them change that cut out
- 10:04eleven books and change the words of Jesus to fit
- 10:06a false doctrine. You go to a counterfeit church, a
- 10:12church founded by man and not by God, and you
- 10:16have no sacraments through which to receive the means of
- 10:20grace other than baptism. You better be praying real hard
- 10:24and honestly get your mind right, because it's not right.
- 10:28It's not right at all. Logic means there's a one answer,
- 10:34I mean on any question that is. You know, what's
- 10:39the word a binary? Really, that's a word I don't
- 10:42even like to use these days the way people use it.
- 10:44But it's either you know, yes or no. It's either
- 10:48right or wrong. It's either true or false. Yeah, anyway,
- 10:54you know two plus two equals four. It doesn't equal five.
- 11:00Our culture doesn't even acknowledge that anymore, not even to mention,
- 11:06you know, X and Y chromosomes and anyway. So the
- 11:11person asks, can a priest forgive blaste me against the
- 11:14Holy Spirit, which Christ says shall not be forgiven to
- 11:17this world or the next. And they answer, there is
- 11:21no sin too great to be forgiven, provided one sincerely
- 11:25repents of it. Christ really referred to evil dispositions of
- 11:29the soul which are so hardened that one will lack
- 11:32the will to repent. Now that's very important. People say,
- 11:35what is the unforgivable sin? Well, it's a sin against
- 11:39the Holy Spirit. Spirit, it's blasted me. It's presumption the
- 11:43sins against the Holy Spirit are considered to be unforgivable
- 11:47because of the original sin of pride prevents the person
- 11:52from acknowledging the wrongness of what they've done. You see,
- 11:58if I went to, say, a Methodist minister, and I
- 12:03said to him, your communion with the grape juice and
- 12:07all is blasphemy, And I showed him, you know, two
- 12:13thousand years of Christian teaching, and proved to him that
- 12:17only a Catholic priest can can what's the word consecrate
- 12:22the Eucharist that can only happen through the Catholic Church.
- 12:26And what he's doing is actually closer to Satanism. It's blasphemous.
- 12:32He would not be able to admit that, even if
- 12:35I gave him all the evidence. And if he cannot
- 12:39admit that, I mean because if he did, he'd have
- 12:41to leave the church and become Catholic. He'd have to
- 12:43leave the Methodist Church and become Catholic, right, he could
- 12:45no longer call himself a minister. This was the same
- 12:48thing reason the Phariseasan scribes. That was the issue they
- 12:51had with Jesus. If Jesus was coming to as the Messiah,
- 12:54they were out of a job, you know, if Christianity
- 12:57was going to be the new religion. And they didn't
- 13:01of course didn't even understand that, but they knew he
- 13:03was coming in drastically changing the law and practice of
- 13:07Judaism at the very least. They were threatened by that.
- 13:12And that's really why they hadn't crucified. They could not
- 13:15admit that they were wrong, just as that Methodist minister
- 13:19will not admit that he's wrong. Franklin Graham on his
- 13:22website says that baptism is not necessary for salvation, even
- 13:27though Jesus said it is, you know, repeatedly, and all
- 13:30Christians believe that. For like two thousand years, Franklin Graham
- 13:35Billy Graham before him, would not admit that baptism is
- 13:38necessary for salvation. That is a sin against the Holy Spirit.
- 13:42And it's not that it's unforgivable, because God is omnipotent.
- 13:47God can do anything. It's that repentance is necessary to
- 13:53confess one's sins. Repentance is necessary for forgiveness. And if
- 13:58someone is absolutely unable, incapable of admitting that they're wrong,
- 14:05then they cannot be forgiven. So that's what the unforgivable
- 14:09sin is, all right, So they said, blasphemy against the
- 14:13Holy Spirit is not blasphemy as commonly understood, but a
- 14:16determined resistance to the very grace of the Holy Spirit,
- 14:20which is meant to save us. Thus, the Pharisees who
- 14:23saw the miracles of Christ could not deny them to
- 14:25be miracles. Yet rather than yield to the grace being
- 14:28offered them, they said that Christ wrought them with the
- 14:31help of the devil and not by God. A man
- 14:34who rejects the very means of God adopts to convert him.
- 14:38By a man who rejects the very means God adopts
- 14:41to convert him is little likely to make good use
- 14:44of other graces offered by God. And our Lord warns
- 14:47us very strongly to beware of sinning against the light,
- 14:50since it seldom ends in repentance. Yet even such a man,
- 14:54with the help of a special grace, could repent of
- 14:56his bad dispositions and thus be converted and forgiven. Any
- 15:01unforgivableness therefore is on the account of the man's bad disposition,
- 15:05not account not on account of the nature of the sin.
- 15:09There is also no absolutely unforgivable sin such as cannot
- 15:13be forgiven even though a man repents. And the person asks,
- 15:17will a Catholic priest who is convicted of murder go
- 15:20to heaven if he confesses his sin to a priest,
- 15:23And they answer, if he has confessed his sin sincerely
- 15:26and with genuine sorrow, his sin will be forgiven and
- 15:29his soul saved. He says, what of the thief who
- 15:34is not discovered by the police, and they answer. The
- 15:37priest orders him to make restitution, giving back to the
- 15:41owner the money or good stolen. Only when he promises
- 15:44to do so will he receive absolution for his sin
- 15:47before God. But the penitent is not obliged to give
- 15:50himself up to the police. It is their business to
- 15:53prove the crime and arrest him. He asked, will the
- 15:56priest tell the police or is it a sacred secret?
- 16:00And they answer the priest will certainly not tell the police.
- 16:02He can never act upon information submitted to him for
- 16:05the purpose of absolution before God. And finally, the person
- 16:09ask is not such a priest and enemy of the state,
- 16:12And they answer No. State laws control men in their
- 16:16capacity as citizens of the state. But a priest does
- 16:19not hear a confession in his capacity as a citizen
- 16:21of a state. He is acting not as a human being,
- 16:24but as an agent of God. You might as well
- 16:26oblige God, since he knows all things. To reveal all
- 16:30crimes to the police. The priest would never have known
- 16:33had he not been doing the duty in the name
- 16:35of God. In any case, he is obliged by both
- 16:38the natural and positive laws of morality in this matter
- 16:41to die rather than to reveal such things. And it's
- 16:47very important to remember the priest cannot break the seal
- 16:49of the confessional. As we have discussed many many times,
- 16:54Anglican vicar is under no such rule. If someone were
- 16:59to come into him, for he's agreed to hear their
- 17:03confession and they admitted to a crime, he's not under
- 17:09any rule not to tell the police. That's one of
- 17:13the big reasons why I have issues with Orthodox churches.
- 17:18Under the Greek Orthodox were taken under the power of
- 17:23the Muslim caliph and were required to break the seal
- 17:26of the confessional. Anyone conspiring against that Islamic state by
- 17:31law had to be turned in to the government by
- 17:33the priests. The Russian Orthodox were under the same rule
- 17:38under the Soviets and the various Soviet satellites. Anyone who
- 17:42came in and confessed that they were plotting against the state,
- 17:47or were not communists, or hated the Communist government, whatever,
- 17:51the priest was under obligation to break the seal of
- 17:54the confessional. Now, whether they did or not, nobody knows. Okay,
- 17:57I mean, I'm not going to say, and yeah, they
- 17:59all did it, but they were required under law to
- 18:03do so, and surely some did. You know how widespread
- 18:09that is I obviously couldn't say, But that obviously invalidates
- 18:15that sacrament. And if the priests don't have the valid sacraments,
- 18:19are they still priests. There's also the issue of apostolic succession.
- 18:23We know that, especially in the Soviet Union, the Soviet
- 18:27government was installing priests and other leaders in the church.
- 18:36You know, you have to wonder is that valid now?
- 18:40I mean, obviously in older times in the Catholic Church,
- 18:43the government of France and such try to influence who
- 18:46would be chosen as a bishop and such as that.
- 18:49But really, I mean, Catholics answer to the Pope is
- 18:55the highest authority on earth and God is the highest
- 18:57authority in the universe. The Greek Orthodox we're answering to
- 19:02a Muslim caliph, and the or Russian Orthodox and related
- 19:05we're answering to Soviet Prime minister or whatever what they
- 19:11call the Soviet leader, PM Gorbachev. Yeah, I guess it
- 19:14was a prime minister. Yeah, what do I know? A
- 19:17Soviet dictator? In other words, were they still acting validly
- 19:23as Christian priests and through apostolic succession? I don't know,
- 19:29I don't know. You know, when a priest gives the sacraments,
- 19:31he's supposed to stand in the stead of Jesus. Even
- 19:35if he's a bad priest, right, I mean you can
- 19:39have a just a horrible a priest, what is a
- 19:41thief or an adulter or something. Right, he still gives
- 19:45a valid Eucharist. He's still validly here's confession, because he's
- 19:48not acting in his own stead. But when you break
- 19:51the seal of the confessional, is he's still acting as
- 19:56a priest? I mean that would be the de facto
- 20:01excommunication of the Catholic Church. He would know he would
- 20:04be stripped of his priesthood. I mean he would be
- 20:08stripped of his what they call it defract right. That
- 20:11would be de facto excommunication and losing one's station as
- 20:16a priest. If a priest were to join the Masonic Order,
- 20:22that's de facto excommunication. And if found out by the bishop,
- 20:26he's stripped of his priesthood, his ability to act as
- 20:30a priest. They say, once a priest, always a priest.
- 20:32But he would no longer be able to offer the
- 20:34sacraments any Catholic Church, unless I believe he was actually
- 20:38readmitted by the Pope himself. So when the Orthodox churches
- 20:44deny the authority of the Pope that's getting pretty close
- 20:51to de facto excommunication. I mean, they're certainly excommunicated from
- 20:55the Catholic Church. When they submit to the authority of
- 20:58a secular government or a a Muslim ruler, that would
- 21:02certainly be grounds for excommunication in any form of Christianity
- 21:07I can think of. And when they break the seal
- 21:10of the confessional, I'm not sure that. I mean, that
- 21:18gets into some really iffy, tricky territory, you know, if
- 21:22that priest, that Orthodox priest under the I mean, there's
- 21:29only like I said, there's only right and wrong and
- 21:30yes or no. You can't say we have one set
- 21:33of rules for Catholics and one set of Orthodox but
- 21:35they're both equally valid as priests. I can't say that
- 21:40at all. And I'm not a you know, canon lawyer
- 21:47or something. I'm not as a legal scholar of doctrine.
- 21:50That's for other people to decide. But I would have
- 21:54some serious concerns. And they also most Russian Orthodox, and
- 22:00I don't know about the other Orthodox churches. Except divorce,
- 22:04they say at least one divorce is okay and may
- 22:09be a problem if you have more than one, all right,
- 22:11that's breaking the sacrament of holy matrimony. I really have
- 22:18my concerns. I mean, I know, it's like very trendy
- 22:23in ecumenism these days to say that, you know, Catholic
- 22:27and Orthodox are brothers, and we're both you know, equally
- 22:31valid as Christians because of Apostolic succession. But the younger
- 22:37brother is in schism with the older brother, and then,
- 22:43you know, all we can do is pray for the
- 22:45unity of all Christians. I have some serious concerns with Orthodoxy.
- 22:54It's certainly been some great saints or Orthodox I mean,
- 22:57but when did when did and which sure and when
- 23:00did they fall away? That's what I have. My concerns
- 23:04revolve around. You can't make blanket statements because there's really
- 23:08no one Orthodox Church. You know, there are all these
- 23:11little branches of Orthodoxy. They don't get along with each
- 23:14other either, but the one thing they all agree on
- 23:16is they hate the Catholic Church. Catholics are big on
- 23:20saying the Orthodox are our brothers, and the Orthodox are
- 23:23big on saying, no, hell no, we're not. I mean,
- 23:27I'm not kidding. You just have to pray for the
- 23:31unity of all Christians. It's all all we can do.
- 23:34All right, Now, let's get on to the Catechism of
- 23:36the Catholic Church follow Sparago. How ought we to pray?
- 23:40This is once again follows Sparago's exhaustive explanation of the
- 23:44Catechism of the Catholic Church published in the eighteen nineties.
- 23:48By praying, we learn to pray. In this the proverb holds,
- 23:53good practice makes perfect. Pray often and you will find
- 23:56a light in prayer. Pray seldom, and it will appear
- 23:59to you and wearisome. God does not regard the length
- 24:03of your supplications, but their fervor. If prayer is to
- 24:07be of utility to us, we must pray in the
- 24:10name of Jesus. That is, we must ask what is
- 24:13in accordance with our Lord's desires. Our Lord desires whatever
- 24:17prompts the glory of God and the salvation of souls.
- 24:20If we pray for what is opposed to our spiritual welfare,
- 24:23we do not pray in the name of Christ e g.
- 24:26If we pray for earthly riches or honors, for the
- 24:28acquisition of superfluities superfluities. But we pray in the name
- 24:35of Christ, that is, in union with His intentions in
- 24:38his spirit. If we ask for such things as the
- 24:41means of earning our daily bread for succor, and time
- 24:44of tribulation for the conversion of a sinner. The Church
- 24:48prays in the name of Christ for all her petitions,
- 24:50concluding with the words through Jesus Christ, our Lord, if
- 24:53you ask anything, if you ask the Father anything in
- 24:56my name, he will give it to you John sixteen
- 24:58twenty three, Such as our life promise. What monarch could
- 25:02refuse the petition of one who said he was authorized
- 25:05to present it by the King's old and royal son.
- 25:08We must pray with devotion, That is, we must fix
- 25:11our thoughts on God. When we pray in our prayers,
- 25:14we hold intercourse with God. When we hold intercourse with
- 25:16our fellow mortals, we give them our whole attention. How
- 25:20much more, when we converse with God, should we fix
- 25:22our mind on him alone. Some people honor God with
- 25:25their lips, while their heart is far from Him Matthew
- 25:27fifteen eight. Their thoughts wander, They think of earthly employments.
- 25:31They do not heed what they say. Prayers that are
- 25:34so tepid and distracted avail nothing with God, who, when
- 25:38pleading before an earthly judge, would turn on those Wait
- 25:42a minute, let me try that again. Prayers that are
- 25:44so tepid and distracted avail nothing with God. Ah, there
- 25:48was a period there that I missed who, when pleading
- 25:51before an earthly judge, would turn to those about him
- 25:54and begin to talk to them. He would be put
- 25:56out of the court for his disrespectful disrespectful behavior. How
- 26:01can we expect God to heed our prayers if we
- 26:03do not heed them ourselves. He who prays without devotion
- 26:07and yet looks for an answer to his prayers is
- 26:10like a man who sows bad grain and anticipates a
- 26:13crop of first rate wheat. It is, not, however, necessary
- 26:17to have sensible devotion to experience extraordinary consolation and delight
- 26:22in prayer. That is a supernatural gift bestowed by God
- 26:26generally as a recompense. It does not add to the
- 26:29value of our prayers, nor are they necessarily the worse
- 26:32if we feel distaste and aridity. Saint Teresa A. Villa
- 26:37says that prayer under such circumstances may be even more
- 26:40meritorious because it is painful to nature. That prayer which
- 26:44causes us an effort which we have to which we
- 26:50have to compel ourselves to offer, is perhaps the most
- 26:53acceptable to God's site. Do not therefore give up prayer
- 26:56on account of aridity and the disinclination for it. The
- 27:00evil enemy seeks by this means to withdraw us from prayer.
- 27:05And God permits this trial to come upon us in
- 27:07order that we may feel our unwakness and humble ourselves
- 27:10on account of it. And if during the whole time
- 27:12of prayer we do nothing but resist the temptations and distractions,
- 27:17let us not think we have prayed badly. God looks
- 27:20to our good will, and they takes pleasure in that
- 27:23He takes pleasure. In order to pray devoutly, we must
- 27:27prepare ourselves beforehand, and during the time of prayer. We
- 27:30must guard our senses and see that we do not
- 27:33assume it in an irreverent posture. Before prayer, prepare thy soul,
- 27:38be not as a man that tempteth God. The harper
- 27:42tunes his heart before the beginning to play, lest there
- 27:45should be a discord in the melody. How carefully those
- 27:48who are admitted to an audience of some earthly monarch
- 27:51perform their toilet. What he means by that is that
- 27:57before somebody goes before a king, they fix themselves up
- 28:00real nice. That doesn't mean use the toilet. Before commencing
- 28:05our prayer. We should place ourselves in the presence of God,
- 28:08endeavoring to realize that we stand in His sight, and
- 28:11then banish from our thoughts all worldly cares and interests.
- 28:15Let us imitate the patriarch Abraham, who, when about to
- 28:19offer up his son Isaac on Mount Moriah, left his servants,
- 28:22his ass and all that were not wanted for the
- 28:25sacrifice at the foot of the mountain, saying, when we
- 28:28have worshiped, we will return to you, as our Lord
- 28:31drove those out who sold the temple. So we must
- 28:35banish all worldly affairs from our heart when it is
- 28:38made for a temple for prayer. Yet the distractions that
- 28:41are involuntary are not sinful, only they must be repulsed
- 28:45and withstood. At prayer, we must close the door that
- 28:48has keep custody of the eyes, and we draw into
- 28:50the secret chambers of the soul. The use of a
- 28:53prayer book often keeps the eyes from wandering. As a rule,
- 28:56when praise with more recollection before the statue of a saint,
- 29:00or in a holy place where all around breathes an
- 29:03atmosphere of devotion. Our attitude during prayers should not be
- 29:07lacking in reverence. As far as possible, we should remain
- 29:09upon our knees as an aid to devotion, and of
- 29:14course that isn't possible for all people. I myself have
- 29:17a very bad knee, dislocated several times, and I can't
- 29:20kneel for very long. Saint Teresa Avilla and Saint Francis
- 29:25de Sal make very clear that it's also perfectly acceptable
- 29:28to pray while walking, while standing, while working. If your
- 29:33work allows you to work with your hands silently, very
- 29:36good time to pray. Often say my best prayers while
- 29:40hiking or fishing. He goes on. We must pray with perseverance,
- 29:46that is, we ought not to desist from prayer if
- 29:48our petition is not immediately granted. We should take example
- 29:52from children who will not leave off clamoring until they
- 29:55get what they want. We mortals are apt to grow
- 29:57angry if a suppliant is to persist, but it is
- 30:00not so with God. He is pleased when we batter
- 30:03the gates of heaven with storms of prayer. Remember the
- 30:06parable of the importunate friend who continued knocking Luke six'.
- 30:10Five god sometimes puts the endurance of the suppliant to
- 30:15a severe, test as was the case with the woman
- 30:18Of Canaan matthew. Fifteen The jews Of bethuliah prayed all
- 30:24night desiring the help Of god Of israel When halifernes
- 30:29besieged their. City but the more they, prayed the more
- 30:31desperate the situation. Appeared yet they held, out And god
- 30:34sent them a. Deliverer In, judith we have already said
- 30:39that for eighteen long Years Saint monica ceased not to
- 30:42pray for her son's, conversion and how richly her constancy
- 30:46was greatly. Rewarded For god loves to come to our
- 30:49aid when our need is. Greatest let us not then be,
- 30:51discouraged as some, are and cease to pray if our
- 30:54prayers are not. Answered the wise course would be to
- 30:57pray more earnestly the Longer god delays our, petition for
- 31:02the Longer he keeps us, waiting the more will his
- 31:04succor surpass all. Expectations he is able to do abundantly
- 31:09more than we desire or. Understand ephesians three. Twenty we
- 31:15have to wait a whole, year Since Saint francis to
- 31:17sow before the seed we sow in the ground bears,
- 31:20fruit and are we more impatient and regard with the
- 31:23fruit of our. Prayers we must pray with a pure,
- 31:26heart that, is our, conscience must be free from grievous,
- 31:30sin or at any rate we must be in penitential.
- 31:32Dispositions the man whose heart is not clean has not
- 31:36power to raise his soul To, God for when he
- 31:38begins to, pray thoughts and images of sin crowd in
- 31:41upon his mind and hold it captive upon. Earth he
- 31:44who prays with an impure, Heart it's like a man
- 31:46who enters the presence of royalty with mud stained garments
- 31:49to implore a. Favor it is only just that he
- 31:52who will not conform to divine precepts should be excluded
- 31:55from a share of divine. Benefactions listen to the commands
- 31:58Of god if you would have, him listen to your.
- 32:00Suffocations but as soon as the sinner is sincerely, contrite
- 32:04he may hope to obtain a. Hearing god will receive
- 32:07his petitions as graciously as if he had never offended.
- 32:10Him in this his unlike men who are prone to
- 32:13cast former offenses in the teeth of those who ask
- 32:16a favor of. Them god looks at the present, attention
- 32:19not the past actions of a. Man remember how the
- 32:22prayer of the penitent publican in the temple was Accepted
- 32:25luke eighteen. Thirteen we must pray with, humility that, is
- 32:30we must acknowledge our own weakness and. Unworthiness the prayer
- 32:33Of him that humbleth himself shall pierce the. Clouds it's
- 32:37A ecclesiastes or SIRIC i cannot remember how lowly is
- 32:43the obsessence of one who approaches one of, magnitude one
- 32:48of the magnates of the, earth to present his petition
- 32:51somebody in. Power in other, words prayer is itself an
- 32:54act of, humility for by it we testify a sense
- 32:57of our dependence upon The lord of heaven and. Earth
- 33:00we take the position of beggars knocking at the door
- 33:02of the Great father of. Mankind we must pray with,
- 33:05confidence that, is with a firm conviction that of his infinite,
- 33:09Mercy god will grant what we, ask provided it tend
- 33:12To his glory and the true welfare of our. Souls
- 33:16the prayer Of him that humbleth himself shall pierce the
- 33:18clouds of what the prayer of faith ought to. Be Third,
- 33:23kings excuse, ME i guess because it's EIGHTEEN alrd says all,
- 33:28things whatsoever you shall ask in, prayer believing you shall
- 33:31Receive matthew twenty one twenty. Two confidence hath a great
- 33:36Reward hebrews ten thirty. Five let not him that wavereth
- 33:40think that he shall receive anything of The Lord james
- 33:43one to. One we must pray with resignation of the.
- 33:46Will that, is we must leave the granting of our
- 33:48petition entirely To god's good, pleasure not my, will but
- 33:52thy and me DoD luke twenty two forty two was
- 33:55Our lord's prayer On Mount. Olive that was Our lord's
- 33:58Prayer Mount. Olive god knows best what is for our.
- 34:01Good we ought no more dictate to him than a
- 34:04sick man who knows nothing of the healing arts ought
- 34:06to tell the physician what drugs he is to give.
- 34:08HIM a certain mother wants was importunate in prayer for
- 34:12the recovery of her sick. Child the priest told her
- 34:15she would do better to ask That god's will might be. Done,
- 34:18no she, exclaimed, Indignantly god must grant my, desire the
- 34:22child was restored to, health took to evil, ways and
- 34:25at last came to the. Gallows happy would it have
- 34:28been for that man had he died in his? Childhood
- 34:31how much wiser it is to leave all in the
- 34:33hands Of, god for he knows the. Future all, right
- 34:37let's see where we are on. THINGS i think we'll
- 34:39wrap it up. There it's about a little over a half.
- 34:41Hour we have a little more to say about prayer next. Week,
- 34:47YEAH i think maybe we can wrap this one up next,
- 34:50week or maybe. Not, actually there's a whole other. Chapter
