Latest / Tabernacle Talk - A Bible Study Podcast with Pastor Bryon Self / 1 Timothy 5:17-25 - Elders: Good and Bad
Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in First Timothy
- 0:18chapter 5, verses 17 through 25. First Timothy 517 through 25.
- 0:25Today's topic is Elders, the good and the bad, Elders, the
- 0:30good and the bad. We in chapter 3 and verses one
- 0:35through 6, we looked at the topic of elders, also called
- 0:40overseers or pastors, shepherds, and the role that they play in
- 0:45leading the local church. They are the spiritual fathers
- 0:48of the church. They are the ones that we are
- 0:51commanded throughout the New Testament, that they are the
- 0:54ones that are guiding the church, that we listen to their
- 0:58instruction as they teach and preach.
- 1:01We follow the path that they have for us as individual, like
- 1:06members of the church, and they minister to us, feeding us the
- 1:12word of God, watching over our souls as we learn together in
- 1:18Hebrews 13. I think that was maybe year and
- 1:21a half two years ago now. And so elders are super, super,
- 1:27super important within the local church.
- 1:31So Paul, not content with what he said in chapter 3, now brings
- 1:37out some more things that his son in the faith, Timothy, a
- 1:40elder, a pastor himself there at the church at Ephesus, some
- 1:44things that Timothy needed to know about the elders at
- 1:48Ephesus, financial responsibilities that the church
- 1:51had to the elders, as well as what to do when an elder, if you
- 1:56will, what to do when an elder goes bad.
- 1:59And so we're going to look at these verses today and I'm I'm
- 2:02super excited. I got to tell you guys, when I
- 2:05am recording this, I have to leave in no later than 15
- 2:10minutes. So today you're going to get
- 2:13either very fast talking Brian, or I'm going to be super upset
- 2:17and only get through like 3 verses and then have to double
- 2:20back on this next episode. But I don't want to do that
- 2:22'cause that's a lot more work for me.
- 2:23So let's read versus 17325. The elders who are good leaders
- 2:28are to be considered worthy of double honor or double support,
- 2:33as we learned last episode about the widows that were being
- 2:36supported financially by the church.
- 2:38So the elders who are good leaders are to be considered
- 2:41worthy of double support, double honor, especially those who work
- 2:45hard at preaching and teaching. For the scripture says do not
- 2:48muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain and the
- 2:52worker is worthy of his wages. Don't accept an accusation
- 2:57against an elder unless it is supported by two or three
- 3:00witnesses. Publicly rebuke those who sin so
- 3:04that the rest will be afraid. I solemnly charge you before God
- 3:08and Christ Jesus and the elect angels to observe these things
- 3:12without prejudice, doing nothing out of favoritism.
- 3:17Don't be too quick to appoint anyone as an elder, and don't
- 3:21share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure.
- 3:25Don't continue drinking only water, but use a little wine
- 3:30because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.
- 3:33Some people's sins are obvious, preceding them to judgement, but
- 3:37the sins of others surface later.
- 3:40Likewise, good works are obvious, and those that are not
- 3:44obvious cannot remain hidden. All right, let's look first at
- 3:50verses 17 and 18. So he says the elders who are
- 3:55good leaders are to be considered worthy of double
- 3:58honor or double support, that there should be financial
- 4:01support for those elders who are good leaders.
- 4:03And he says especially those who work hard at preaching and
- 4:08teaching. From this passage from First
- 4:11Corinthians, from several places in the book of Acts, Second
- 4:16Corinthians. And I feel like there's one
- 4:19other spot as well. We do not pay people as our
- 4:25pastors because because it the the preaching and teaching could
- 4:33not be done for free like it could.
- 4:36Absolutely. I know many churches that are
- 4:38unable to pay their pastors, but they're pastors out of just deep
- 4:42love for the Lord and deep love for the church.
- 4:45They work a regular job to provide for their family, which
- 4:48we read yesterday. One has to provide for their
- 4:53family. That is something that is
- 4:55commanded by God. So some pastors do that and they
- 4:59work an outside job and they also prepare sermons and lessons
- 5:04and and teaching and they counsel with people and they
- 5:07hope to guide and direct a church according to the will of
- 5:11God. And they do it all for free for
- 5:14the people of God. And man, what a wonderful thing
- 5:18that that is when someone does that.
- 5:19Paul actually modeled that within his ministry, that
- 5:22whenever he went to a new place, he worked as a tent maker and
- 5:27supported himself through doing that while he was planting the
- 5:31church. Then as he planted the churches,
- 5:34what we read here, what we read in First Corinthians, is that he
- 5:38would actually tell the believers, now when I'm gone,
- 5:41you guys need to financially support those who would be
- 5:45teaching you. And if you guys want to
- 5:47financially support me, if you will, as a missionary, as I'm
- 5:52going to other places like you can do that.
- 5:55But Paul when he was planting churches did not want anyone to
- 5:59think that he was like there and doing it for the money.
- 6:03But he did instruct them, if you have a a pastor, one who is
- 6:08regularly in the Word teaching and preaching to you, you ought
- 6:13to financially support him. I'm really thankful that here at
- 6:16Tabernacle that I've been cared for, that I have clothes on my
- 6:21back, I have food in my belly, I have a roof over my head.
- 6:25And it is because God's people have together said we are going
- 6:30to provide for Brian and for the selves.
- 6:34And I'm, I'm incredibly thankful for that.
- 6:36It means that right now at 240 is when I'm recording this, when
- 6:41I am, you know, during a work week, I don't have to worry
- 6:46about working, you know, 40 to 60 hours at, you know, the
- 6:52McDonald's or Taco Bell by my house or, you know, Home Depot
- 6:55or something. I don't have to worry about
- 6:57working my full time job and then trying to do everything for
- 7:01the church. I can devote a ton of my time to
- 7:04the ministry of the Word and a prayer.
- 7:06And so every single day I get to spend time in the Word.
- 7:09I get to prepare messages and Bible studies and teaching
- 7:15resources and materials for others.
- 7:17I get to counsel with people that have various like needs and
- 7:22and life concerns and all of that.
- 7:25And I get to do it all as a result of the giving of God's
- 7:28people. It frees me up to do more
- 7:30ministry. If there ever were to come a
- 7:34time where I would need to get another job, I would probably
- 7:37not be able to do, you know, a weekday Tabernacle talk.
- 7:41I might do, you know, once a week or once a month or
- 7:45something like that. But I am able at this time,
- 7:49because of the giving of God's people, to teach more of the
- 7:52Word of God, whether online or in preparing sermons or
- 7:56counseling with people throughout each and every week.
- 8:00I'm just really grateful for that.
- 8:01It's a really amazing privilege. But here, this is where that
- 8:05concept comes from and it's born out of, I actually think I
- 8:11mentioned this verse when we were in Leviticus says, for the
- 8:15Scripture says do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the
- 8:19grain. So your oxen would be trampling
- 8:22on the grain. And if you were like, oh man, I
- 8:25want all of the grain to be able to, you know, be made into bread
- 8:28or whatever they did with grain back in that time.
- 8:32Some people would say, OK, well we're going to put a muzzle on
- 8:35the ox so that way he doesn't eat any of the grain and that
- 8:37way we can keep all of the grain.
- 8:39God actually forbade that. He says, no, the person that is
- 8:42working ought to be compensated for the work that they're doing
- 8:49here. It's very interesting when Paul
- 8:50says the Scripture says this do not Muslim ox while it's
- 8:53treading out the grain that's from the Old Testament, like
- 8:56that's from the Torah. And then he says and the worker
- 9:00is worthy of his wages. So he calls both of these
- 9:02statements Scripture, but actually the worker is worthy of
- 9:05his wages is something that Jesus said.
- 9:08So Paul here in First Timothy 5 is saying that what Jesus said
- 9:13is also Scripture. So that goes into a whole bunch
- 9:17about like, you know, the Canon of Scripture and all of that.
- 9:20But there was recognition even by the early church that what
- 9:24Jesus and the apostles were writing and and putting together
- 9:29and what the apostles were writing of what Jesus has had
- 9:32said, that was also Scripture, just like the Old Testament
- 9:35scriptures. And so Jesus says the worker is
- 9:38worthy of his wages. If someone puts in work and
- 9:40effort, they ought to be compensated for that.
- 9:44That's not always a particularly popular view online.
- 9:51Almost every week I'll get some comments on either, you know,
- 9:56the church's TikTok or YouTube or something about, Oh yeah,
- 10:00you're just trying to fill those offering plates.
- 10:03And that's why you, you know, why I'm preaching Jesus is the
- 10:06only way of salvation or something like that.
- 10:09And the, the truth is like, if I wanted to make a ton of money,
- 10:13pastoring a, a local Baptist Church is not the way to go.
- 10:18You know, this is not, you know, Creflo Dollar or, you know, any
- 10:21one of those kind of like prosperity preachers where I've
- 10:23got like my 3 private jets. Pastoring is not a, a way to
- 10:27make phenomenal money. But I'm thankful that for the
- 10:30work that I am putting in for the Lord and for these people
- 10:34that that I am being cared for. And I want to encourage you if
- 10:37you're not a part of Tabernacle like give financially to your
- 10:41local church so that they are able to provide for the needs of
- 10:44your pastor. Now again, may he be faithful in
- 10:50regularly teaching and preaching the word, especially doing it
- 10:54well, but but care for those people.
- 10:57So that's that portion verse #19 and I only have 5 minutes left.
- 11:02And so you guys, you're great today.
- 11:03You will not have a 30 minute episode.
- 11:06He says sometimes elders will do wrong here.
- 11:08Paul throughout the book has been saying some people have
- 11:11been teaching things that are false.
- 11:13And he says don't accept an accusation against an elder
- 11:16unless it is supported by two or three witnesses.
- 11:19So sometimes people will be upset at a church leader.
- 11:24And here this would be a, I'll call it a moral accusation, not
- 11:29a criminal accusation. So if a, again, this is very
- 11:35unfortunately something many people have walked through.
- 11:37If a pastor abuses a child or abuses a woman or abuses a man,
- 11:43there would only be the pastor and the victim in that
- 11:47situation. And so you could not have two or
- 11:49three witnesses. That is not the type of scenario
- 11:52that is being demanded here, that two or three witnesses.
- 11:57This is again going with Levitical law.
- 11:59If someone's like, hey, you know, the pastor is greedy, the
- 12:02pastor is promiscuous, you know, some of those types of things
- 12:07that there needs to be corroboration of accusations.
- 12:11That was something that was set out in the Old Testament law.
- 12:14And Paul brings it now to Timothy to say sometimes people
- 12:17will be upset with elders for decisions that they come to.
- 12:21But I I want you to realize that sometimes people are just
- 12:25disgruntled. That is not to say that if you
- 12:30ever hear about a pastor abusing someone, just tell the cops.
- 12:34Allow the cops to be the detectives.
- 12:36Allow them to be the investigators.
- 12:39So many churches have gone down the tubes because they
- 12:42misapplied and misused this verse.
- 12:45This is about character things. This is not OK.
- 12:49Well, unless we have two or three witnesses to the crime, it
- 12:51didn't really happen. I'm not supposed to receive that
- 12:53accusation. No Tell the cops, let them deal
- 12:56with it. If it's character things, then
- 12:58that's something as a church that you deal with together.
- 13:01Verse #20 publicly rebuke those who sin so that the rest will be
- 13:05afraid. I've also seen this misused
- 13:09plenty of times in the past. This is specifically talking
- 13:11about the elders. When a pastor falls, the church
- 13:14needs to name it and if you will, they need to name it and
- 13:17shame it to say this is absolutely unacceptable
- 13:20behavior. And he tells Timothy as it
- 13:23relates to publicly rebuking those church leaders, that sin,
- 13:28that that yeah, the the living sin.
- 13:31He says, I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus and
- 13:35the elect angels. So from everything in heaven
- 13:38commands you to do this, to rebuke sin and wickedness in
- 13:43church leaders. He says to observe these things
- 13:47without prejudice, doing nothing out of favoritism.
- 13:50He says, Timothy, you're going to be having worked with some of
- 13:52these guys and spent time with them, but you need to regardless
- 13:57of how much like you love or care for them, you need to shoot
- 14:02straight when they've sinned, call out the sin.
- 14:05He says don't be too quick to appoint anyone as an elder and
- 14:08don't share in the sins of others.
- 14:10Who you put into church leadership is actually then a
- 14:13responsibility of you of like, hey, you did wrong.
- 14:16This person abused this. This person, you know, was able
- 14:20to to make off with funds in this way.
- 14:23This person like lorded the over people and harmed them
- 14:26relationally, emotionally as a result of the fact that they
- 14:29were in church leadership and you put them in that spot.
- 14:32We participate in the repercussions of who we place in
- 14:37the church leadership. So it is super, super important.
- 14:40It's also why I would have a conviction.
- 14:42Let's stick with only the church leadership that Scripture has
- 14:46for us, which is elders and deacons.
- 14:49And when you have that, that is a safeguard for your church that
- 14:52you don't have 1000 different positions that then you can be
- 14:55responsible for 1000 different sins that are committed.
- 14:59He says keep yourself pure verse #23 even as in chapter 3, Paul
- 15:06had said those that are going to be overseers, elders, pastors,
- 15:10they need to not be addicted to wine in verse #23 he actually
- 15:14tells Timothy. But Timothy, even as you're like
- 15:17keeping yourself pure, you're guarding your life, you right
- 15:20now are totally avoiding drinking any alcohol.
- 15:24He says don't continue drinking only water.
- 15:27He says you have stomach issues and actually drinking some of
- 15:30the wine there in that 1st century that will actually help
- 15:33you if you will. This is a commendation of early
- 15:361st century medicine in the use of a glass of wine.
- 15:41He says use a little wine because of your stomach and your
- 15:44frequent illnesses. He doesn't say pray your stomach
- 15:47illnesses away. He says use this medicine.
- 15:50So medicine is good. It is not unbiblical verse #24
- 15:54he says some people's sins are obvious, preceding them to
- 15:57judgement, but the sins of others surface later.
- 16:00So some, some people will sin at the front end.
- 16:04And you know, I shouldn't put this person into church
- 16:06leadership. Some people's sins show up later
- 16:08on once they're in church leadership, he says.
- 16:11So be aware that this will happen.
- 16:13You won't be able to tell who all the bad guys are on the
- 16:16front end. Some you will have to rebuke
- 16:20once they're put into leadership.
- 16:22And then verse 25, he ends on a good note.
- 16:24Likewise, good works are obvious and those that are not obvious
- 16:28cannot remain hidden. There are going to be people
- 16:32that we know are good and there are people that we will find out
- 16:35more and more as the years go on are actually better and better
- 16:39through the Holy Spirit working and living in them than we ever
- 16:42thought possible. Well, I'm at my time for today
- 16:46and we got through all of the passage.
- 16:48So praise the Lord. I hope that this was maybe a
- 16:51challenge or an encouragement to you.
- 16:52If you have any thoughts, throw it down in the comments.
- 16:56If you're like, yes, I love, you know, the wine thing.
- 17:00Maybe you need to back off the wine.
- 17:02And if you're like, no, I can't believe you said that Timothy
- 17:05needed to drink wine. Maybe you should, you know, look
- 17:08at some more scripture. If you have any questions on
- 17:11wine, at some point I'll do an episode on on wine and and what
- 17:16scripture talks about all all throughout scripture.
- 17:19So wonderful study of air enlightening.
- 17:22But today is not that day. Hope you have a wonderful day.
- 17:24See you next episode.
