- 0:48Speaker 3: and tell, and we've got another hot tip off. But
- 0:51Speaker 3: before we get to all that, we're gonna talk to
- 0:53Speaker 3: a man who built a doggy door for a bear.
- 0:58Speaker 3: You like that, phil Is? She is just a great
- 0:59Speaker 3: sent Brodie, Seth, how are you guys doing today? Fantastic
- 1:04Speaker 3: getting a little excited for rifle opener here in.
- 1:06Speaker 4: My t it's almost here, Saturday, very close, very close.
- 1:10Speaker 4: I can't wait.
- 1:10Speaker 3: And Brody, you just got out this pass.
- 1:13Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm not even going out this weekend. We just
- 1:15Speaker 5: got off the youth hunt and uh, four families, four groups.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Of kids, six kids total, killed six bucks.
- 1:24Speaker 4: In a day and a half.
- 1:25Speaker 3: It's pretty impressive. That's cold killers out and that satiated
- 1:30Speaker 3: your deer hunting bug for a little bit.
- 1:32Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm not gonna hunt deer until till the ruck
- 1:35Speaker 5: kicks in around here in mid November.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Nice. Yeah, that's a good feeling to have that freezer
- 1:41Speaker 3: partially filled. Oh yeah, well you got a moose. Oh yeah,
- 1:45Speaker 3: that's like wave never mind. Yeah, your freezer is probably
- 1:48Speaker 3: got a second one going.
- 1:49Speaker 5: All right, Yeah, I'm not in any rush.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Well, a quick reminder for our listeners. We are going
- 1:55Speaker 3: to be doing a Q and a halfway through and
- 1:57Speaker 3: then again at the end of the show. So if
- 1:59Speaker 3: you got a question or a comment, or you want
- 2:01Speaker 3: us to address whatever is on your mind, please feel
- 2:05Speaker 3: free to drop that in the chat.
- 2:07Speaker 6: Yeah, and on that note, we actually just got a
- 2:09Speaker 6: really pertinent question from Bart. He's asking if does Brody
- 2:13Speaker 6: know that he lost Trivia after the.
- 2:16Speaker 3: Oh that's a great question, Bart Brody. A few weeks
- 2:20Speaker 3: ago when Jannis hosted Trivia, there was a question about
- 2:25Speaker 3: what's the what's the name of the what's the word?
- 2:27Speaker 3: The term a certain type of hibernation that animals go through,
- 2:32Speaker 3: and he was.
- 2:33Speaker 7: Asking you, how was the reptile one.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, but it's also actually applies to amphibians, and
- 2:38Speaker 3: so my answer of salamander was in fact correct, And
- 2:42Speaker 3: so you and I should not have gone to the
- 2:44Speaker 3: tiebreaker that you then won. So in fact I won
- 2:47Speaker 3: that game.
- 2:47Speaker 7: Right, you know, you got to win one once in
- 2:50Speaker 7: a while, Bud.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Wow, they delayed gratification is still gratification? All right, Well,
- 2:58Speaker 3: we we are going to to turn now to our
- 3:01Speaker 3: first guest, Kurt Siewe, who's coming to us live from
- 3:04Speaker 3: North Vancouver, British Columbia. Kurt, welcome to the show.
- 3:09Speaker 8: Good morning guys, Thank you.
- 3:11Speaker 3: How are you doing?
- 3:12Speaker 8: Very good?
- 3:14Speaker 3: Excellent? So, Kurt, you know a lot of us have
- 3:18Speaker 3: had issues as homeowners with wildlife and all sorts of
- 3:23Speaker 3: other creatures, but you have a particularly interesting example that
- 3:26Speaker 3: you're going to share with us today. Can you tell
- 3:28Speaker 3: us a little bit about the issue you had and
- 3:30Speaker 3: how you solved it?
- 3:33Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 3:33Speaker 9: Okay, So the issue was we moved here ten years
- 3:35Speaker 9: ago and the fence on either side was pretty old
- 3:39Speaker 9: and it had these big holes on it. We weren't
- 3:41Speaker 9: really sure why, so I patched them up. Within weeks
- 3:45Speaker 9: we realized we're on a bear root and he just
- 3:48Speaker 9: kept punching through the fence leading the holes. So he'd
- 3:51Speaker 9: go through and break it, I'd fix it, so I
- 3:54Speaker 9: just eventually stopped and left it open.
- 3:56Speaker 5: Was this a black bear or grizzly bear?
- 3:58Speaker 10: Yeah, black bear.
- 3:59Speaker 9: There's probably three or four that hang around the area,
- 4:02Speaker 9: but there's this one big one that the last two years,
- 4:05Speaker 9: he comes by consistently, probably two or three times a
- 4:08Speaker 9: week from June to September.
- 4:12Speaker 3: And this is just his route. He's claimed it.
- 4:15Speaker 9: Well, we're on his route, and it wasn't a big deal.
- 4:17Speaker 9: Like I had my night cameras where we'd watch it,
- 4:20Speaker 9: we'd see him during the day sometimes. It wasn't a
- 4:21Speaker 9: big deal until month ago we put in a new
- 4:24Speaker 9: fence all the way down on the south side and
- 4:27Speaker 9: eight foot seater. I think he can see the picture
- 4:29Speaker 9: right now and if he either climb it or he'd
- 4:33Speaker 9: go around right just. I didn't think he'd break it.
- 4:36Speaker 9: But within two days, my wife and I were sitting
- 4:38Speaker 9: watching Netflix, maybe seven pm, and we look over and
- 4:42Speaker 9: I just see the sheet the pine boards just being
- 4:45Speaker 9: punched out.
- 4:46Speaker 10: I go run and out and he's out there just punching.
- 4:48Speaker 8: The boards out. He didn't wreck anything.
- 4:50Speaker 10: Which was fantastic, but you could see the picture.
- 4:53Speaker 9: He knocked the whole panel out and then just went
- 4:55Speaker 9: on his way, and I chased him up the driveway.
- 4:58Speaker 9: He couldn't care less, And so we're on a route.
- 5:00Speaker 9: He goes from the river, which he back onto up
- 5:03Speaker 9: to the street and he goes through our yard.
- 5:05Speaker 4: Gotcha, Kurt, is this bear messing with anything other than
- 5:09Speaker 4: your fence or he's just just messing the fence up
- 5:12Speaker 4: as he comes by.
- 5:13Speaker 8: He just the fence.
- 5:15Speaker 9: He wants food. Like I've got a dog, he doesn't bother.
- 5:17Speaker 9: He's got kids, he doesn't bother I used to have chickens,
- 5:20Speaker 9: he doesn't bother them.
- 5:21Speaker 8: He's lazy, he's fat. He just wants food.
- 5:24Speaker 9: And he wants bug him and he just goes on
- 5:27Speaker 9: his way.
- 5:28Speaker 3: So tell us about how you solved this issue.
- 5:34Speaker 9: So I'm outside and I see the broken paddle, and
- 5:38Speaker 9: I'm like, I'm not gonna just leave it open. I've
- 5:40Speaker 9: got a new fence now, paid good money, So i
- 5:42Speaker 9: just rapped a three foot by three foot opening for
- 5:46Speaker 9: a couple of days. So yeah, there you see it now.
- 5:48Speaker 9: And then I'm like, hey, but raccoon's every coyote is
- 5:51Speaker 9: everything else my dog Faggor's kids can get through. I'm like,
- 5:54Speaker 9: I don't want to just leave it open. So my
- 5:56Speaker 9: wife's like, let's just let's put a doggy door or
- 5:58Speaker 9: a cat door, but we'll make at a bear door.
- 6:01Speaker 9: And I'm by no meat the carpenter handyman. So I'm like, well, okay,
- 6:05Speaker 9: cool Saturday project. I go to Rona whatever from Depault,
- 6:08Speaker 9: buy some hinges. Round one doesn't work at all, so
- 6:12Speaker 9: that I just take a day off. A little frustrated
- 6:15Speaker 9: that I grab some copper pipe, put it in and
- 6:18Speaker 9: on the top, and then it starts to swing. And
- 6:20Speaker 9: my buddy.
- 6:21Speaker 10: Of mine, as a joke I was doing, he sends
- 6:25Speaker 10: me the bear sign.
- 6:26Speaker 8: So Amazon package shows up. I crack it open.
- 6:28Speaker 10: It's this bear sign. I'm like, oh, what the hell?
- 6:30Speaker 9: And it's it was him as a joke, because this
- 6:32Speaker 9: whole thing is a joke. We're not thinking this is
- 6:34Speaker 9: going to work.
- 6:35Speaker 8: Yeah, So I put the.
- 6:36Speaker 9: Bear sign on the door and I set my rol
- 6:38Speaker 9: security camera up right above it on my house because
- 6:41Speaker 9: this this is about ten feet from my front door,
- 6:44Speaker 9: and well, those steeper works.
- 6:46Speaker 10: It's a long shot.
- 6:47Speaker 9: But we didn't expect anything to happen, and sure enough,
- 6:50Speaker 9: like maybe ten days later, we catch the video of
- 6:54Speaker 9: him going through and it's the coolest thing.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Ever, and oh, that's amazing.
- 7:02Speaker 9: So that's on my neighbor's side. Yeah, I put a
- 7:04Speaker 9: camera on my neighbor's side too. So there's another video
- 7:07Speaker 9: I don't I think I sent it is where he
- 7:08Speaker 9: actually walks up and he taps on the on the
- 7:12Speaker 9: bear sign to kind of test.
- 7:13Speaker 8: It, and it's hilarious. So I get the video.
- 7:17Speaker 9: It's like six in the morning when I get up,
- 7:18Speaker 9: get the video and send it to my neighbor, who
- 7:20Speaker 9: sends it to the Bear Society.
- 7:22Speaker 10: Local Bear Society.
- 7:24Speaker 9: Canadians are really nice, so we want to just make
- 7:26Speaker 9: sure everybody's happy. And they posted on Instagram and it
- 7:32Speaker 9: just explodes and I'm not on Instagram or TikTok. It
- 7:37Speaker 9: explodes in the neighborhood, and then Global News calls me,
- 7:41Speaker 9: they put me on TV to an interview, and then
- 7:43Speaker 9: CBC News calls me. They posted on TikTok and Instagram.
- 7:47Speaker 9: Within like four days, it's got over five million views.
- 7:51Speaker 9: And then now I'm I'm asked being asked to talk
- 7:54Speaker 9: about it on a regular.
- 7:55Speaker 10: Basis and my kids and that are having a blast because.
- 7:58Speaker 9: This is just a joke, and it's just it's gone viral.
- 8:01Speaker 9: Their dad, who's almost fifty, has gone viral, and so
- 8:04Speaker 9: we're all just Last Thursday, when we're at about nine
- 8:09Speaker 9: hundred thousand views, my sister texts me, She's like, Kurt,
- 8:12Speaker 9: you're at like nine hundred and fifty thousand views on
- 8:14Speaker 9: this bear video of yours. So I start watching it
- 8:17Speaker 9: and just refreshed, refreshed. My girls come home to school,
- 8:20Speaker 9: it's getting closer to a million, closer to a million,
- 8:23Speaker 9: and then across is a million views, and we start
- 8:25Speaker 9: jumping around, hugging, celebrating, and then we're kind of like, now,
- 8:29Speaker 9: what is Jimmy callon?
- 8:30Speaker 10: Gonna call?
- 8:34Speaker 8: Differently? Do we call someone? What should we do?
- 8:36Speaker 9: And you know, we just have a total blast with it,
- 8:39Speaker 9: and you know, my fifteen minutes of fame is almost over,
- 8:42Speaker 9: and but we're we're riding this out.
- 8:44Speaker 8: It's been really fun.
- 8:45Speaker 3: That's great. So are any other have you seen any
- 8:48Speaker 3: other bears or any other wildlife interested in using the
- 8:51Speaker 3: door or is it just a big guy?
- 8:54Speaker 9: So just the bear, A couple of dogs he tried
- 8:56Speaker 9: it won't go through because even if they can't push it,
- 9:00Speaker 9: they're going to get pinched. Probably some of the most
- 9:03Speaker 9: fun is when I went on to TikTok hearing how
- 9:07Speaker 9: the Americans.
- 9:08Speaker 4: The bringing up with Kurt here.
- 9:14Speaker 8: This guy is so awesome.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Oh sorry, we lost you for just a second, you
- 9:20Speaker 3: said the Americans, and then we lost you there. You
- 9:24Speaker 3: could go anywhere you are with it.
- 9:28Speaker 9: The options are endlest know the Americans the comments the
- 9:31Speaker 9: Americans left versus the Canadians. The Canadians are all like, oh,
- 9:34Speaker 9: this guy's so great, hugs and kisses, and I'm going
- 9:37Speaker 9: to do that in my yard with my bear, and
- 9:39Speaker 9: the the Americans are like, didn't this guy have a bullet?
- 9:44Speaker 9: And this is like a typical Canadian, what doesn't he
- 9:46Speaker 9: have any guns?
- 9:49Speaker 3: Yep, it's an interesting sociological experiment.
- 9:54Speaker 7: Typically in this situation, that bear would get a name.
- 9:57Speaker 4: Have you have you named him yet?
- 9:59Speaker 8: We mean of fat ass, just because.
- 10:03Speaker 4: I love it. That's perfect.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Have you have you had any contact with the local
- 10:09Speaker 3: Fish and Game agency or the wildlife managers in that area?
- 10:12Speaker 3: What do they think of it?
- 10:15Speaker 8: No, we haven't.
- 10:16Speaker 9: But that's intentional on our parts because in North Vancouver,
- 10:19Speaker 9: there's the two extremes. People will like leave food out
- 10:22Speaker 9: because they want to see the bear. The other extreme
- 10:25Speaker 9: as they call the conservation officer at like any whiff
- 10:28Speaker 9: of a bear. And so we don't call, and we
- 10:31Speaker 9: don't leave food out. So we're trying to just keep
- 10:33Speaker 9: it quiet, like enjoy the fact that the bears.
- 10:35Speaker 10: In our yard on a regular basis.
- 10:37Speaker 6: So, no, we have a We've got a question from Trevor.
- 10:41Speaker 6: He says he thinks you're pretty good with animals after
- 10:43Speaker 6: this whole thing. Do you have a history with any
- 10:45Speaker 6: animals or live stock?
- 10:50Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 10:51Speaker 8: Nice question.
- 10:52Speaker 9: Uh, yes, I have a live stock. It's a lot
- 10:56Speaker 9: of very good history. I'm glad my wife isn't here
- 10:59Speaker 9: answered this. But I've had donkeys and goats in the past,
- 11:02Speaker 9: but it didn't go well and we didn't have them
- 11:04Speaker 9: very long.
- 11:05Speaker 8: I'm not a farmer.
- 11:06Speaker 3: And well, I mean, it's got to be real satisfying
- 11:10Speaker 3: when you see the bear go through the door. Do
- 11:12Speaker 3: you have do you have any other I mean a treehouse?
- 11:15Speaker 3: What's next for you? You're just gonna enjoy the door for
- 11:18Speaker 3: a little while.
- 11:19Speaker 10: So this is the south side of our yard.
- 11:21Speaker 9: The north side of my yard is also on this
- 11:24Speaker 9: route and currently has a broken tense and so we
- 11:27Speaker 9: we've booked a guy to.
- 11:27Speaker 10: Come build us a new one on the north side.
- 11:29Speaker 10: So I'm going to build a.
- 11:30Speaker 9: Bear door on the north side as well, because he
- 11:32Speaker 9: again he comes in from the north.
- 11:34Speaker 8: Yeah, and he's on the south.
- 11:35Speaker 10: I've got another door to build.
- 11:36Speaker 4: Is this bear visiting every day pretty much? Is he
- 11:40Speaker 4: pretty consistent?
- 11:41Speaker 8: Yeah, two to three times a week.
- 11:43Speaker 9: And he I saw him this morning much further from
- 11:46Speaker 9: my house, and anytime of day, he's just like today's
- 11:48Speaker 9: garbage day where the bins are out, so he'll be
- 11:51Speaker 9: walking up the street and knocking bins over and just
- 11:55Speaker 9: again really slow, really laid back, just doing this thing
- 11:58Speaker 9: looking for food.
- 11:59Speaker 8: Doesn't bug any buddy.
- 12:00Speaker 9: Some people freaked out, and others kind of just watch
- 12:03Speaker 9: him and film him.
- 12:04Speaker 4: He's just a nice Canadian bear, just in trouble south
- 12:11Speaker 4: of the border.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, Well, I'm glad he's out there with you guys.
- 12:15Speaker 3: I'm glad he's up there with you guys.
- 12:17Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 12:17Speaker 9: And then when your studio reached out, I wanted to
- 12:19Speaker 9: make it clear like I'm not shooting this bear.
- 12:21Speaker 8: I'm not going to put him up on my wall and.
- 12:26Speaker 9: This is as long as we understand that. Yeah, I'm
- 12:29Speaker 9: not a hunter of guns, but I'm no hunter.
- 12:32Speaker 3: Very cool. Well, thank you for sharing your story with us, Kurt,
- 12:36Speaker 3: and thanks for joining us today. And good luck to
- 12:39Speaker 3: you with that bear. Fencing is expensive, so I hope
- 12:42Speaker 3: he doesn't take any more panels out.
- 12:44Speaker 8: Yeah, absolutely, thanks very much, guys.
- 12:46Speaker 4: You all right?
- 12:50Speaker 3: Next, our next segment is the rut Report.
- 12:54Speaker 6: Oh shoot, you know what, I totally forgot to make
- 12:57Speaker 6: a drop for this.
- 12:59Speaker 8: Are you?
- 13:00Speaker 3: This is really randam It tells me to pause for sound.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Well the thing here's the thing is actually go on.
- 13:06Speaker 4: It's actually a really funny story because I just tail run.
- 13:11Speaker 4: It's all ready here.
- 13:13Speaker 3: I'm just gonna tell you I'm about the tracks you
- 13:18Speaker 3: byecause your weapon kids, goodbye.
- 13:22Speaker 4: Don't decide to desert you.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Oh I love that, nice randall I got Rickrolls nicely played,
- 13:32Speaker 3: Phil nicely played.
- 13:33Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 13:33Speaker 6: I lived my life on the internet like it's two
- 13:35Speaker 6: thousand and nine.
- 13:37Speaker 3: Don't we all?
- 13:38Speaker 4: Beautiful?
- 13:39Speaker 3: Beautiful time back then. The Red Report is where Mark
- 13:42Speaker 3: Kenyon gives a white tail hunting forecast for each region.
- 13:46Speaker 3: Take it away, Mark.
- 13:47Speaker 11: Hey, guys, Mark Kenyon. Here with wired Hunt coming at
- 13:51Speaker 11: you with the RUT report for October twenty fourth, twenty
- 13:54Speaker 11: twenty four. And as you can see, I am in
- 13:57Speaker 11: my truck, just got out of the tree. Want to
- 14:00Speaker 11: get you the latest report. And what I'm seeing out
- 14:02Speaker 11: here today, what I've been hearing from folks across the country,
- 14:05Speaker 11: is that things are about to get much better for
- 14:08Speaker 11: many of us across the country. The last seven days
- 14:10Speaker 11: or so have been pretty slow. There's been a very warm,
- 14:13Speaker 11: stable period of weather, but that's about to change in
- 14:16Speaker 11: the coming few days. There's a cold front moving across,
- 14:19Speaker 11: at least to the northern half of the country, which
- 14:22Speaker 11: is going to trigger more daylight activity. And that is
- 14:25Speaker 11: all on top of the fact that as we enter
- 14:27Speaker 11: the last week of October, bucks testosterone levels, at least
- 14:31Speaker 11: for that northern two thirds of the nation, those testosterone
- 14:35Speaker 11: levels are rising and we are nearing the peak of
- 14:38Speaker 11: scraping activity. We are nearing the peak of those bucks
- 14:41Speaker 11: feeling rambunctious and ready to go, but we still don't
- 14:44Speaker 11: have very many, if any doughs ready to breathe. That's
- 14:48Speaker 11: about to happen for much of the country here any
- 14:50Speaker 11: day now, but maybe not quite yet. So those bucks
- 14:53Speaker 11: are out there searching for that first dough. They are
- 14:56Speaker 11: on the prowl, they're making scrapes. This is the peak
- 14:59Speaker 11: of scraping activity the entire year. Likely they are becoming
- 15:02Speaker 11: more susceptible to calls, and they're absolutely moving more in daylight.
- 15:07Speaker 11: In the South, that's gonna be a little bit different,
- 15:09Speaker 11: as there's variable rut dates for many parts of the
- 15:12Speaker 11: southern tier. But if you are north of the Mason
- 15:15Speaker 11: Dixon line, for sure, the next seven to fourteen days
- 15:18Speaker 11: it's going.
- 15:19Speaker 4: To be exciting.
- 15:20Speaker 3: I'm excited.
- 15:21Speaker 4: That gets me fired up.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I can feel my testosterone levels rising.
- 15:27Speaker 4: All right.
- 15:28Speaker 3: Our next segment is one Minute Fishing.
- 15:32Speaker 11: Do I feel lucky?
- 15:34Speaker 12: We'll do you punk, Go ahead, make my cast.
- 15:41Speaker 3: One Minute Fishing is where we go live to someone
- 15:44Speaker 3: who's fishing and they have one minute to catch a fish,
- 15:47Speaker 3: and if they're successful, we'll make a five hundred dollars
- 15:50Speaker 3: donation to a conservation group. This week, our angler is
- 15:54Speaker 3: Chris Mcaluso, who's on Lake Poncha Train in Louisiana and
- 15:58Speaker 3: he is fishing for a donation to TRCP.
- 16:01Speaker 4: Chris.
- 16:02Speaker 3: Welcome to the show.
- 16:04Speaker 13: Cold On Fellas how are y'all?
- 16:06Speaker 3: Oh, I'm doing fantastic. It looks like a beautiful day
- 16:09Speaker 3: up there.
- 16:10Speaker 10: Oh man, it is gorgeous.
- 16:12Speaker 13: You know, if I had to, you know, if I
- 16:15Speaker 13: had my brothers, it'd be about eight or ten degrees
- 16:18Speaker 13: cooler because it's warm down here for late October.
- 16:21Speaker 10: But gorgeous.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Man.
- 16:22Speaker 13: Not a cloud in the sky, a little bit of
- 16:24Speaker 13: bee's blowing. Catching a fish here and there, not.
- 16:27Speaker 12: A bad day.
- 16:28Speaker 3: What do you go for today? C mac?
- 16:31Speaker 13: Well, you know, just about anything that bites. That's the
- 16:34Speaker 13: cool thing about the Lake Ponta train area is it's
- 16:39Speaker 13: fresh water, it's salt water, it's brackis you know, it
- 16:42Speaker 13: could be just about anything. So just as an example,
- 16:45Speaker 13: we've caught large mouth, fast speckled trout, croaker. We haven't
- 16:52Speaker 13: caught a redfish yet, but we did catch a blue catfish.
- 16:55Speaker 13: We caught an alligator guard. But we've called a big
- 16:59Speaker 13: variety of fish. And the cool thing is this time
- 17:02Speaker 13: of year the fisher really key it in on shrimp.
- 17:05Speaker 13: The white shrimp start to come out of the marsh
- 17:08Speaker 13: this time of year, and uh, and that's what just
- 17:11Speaker 13: about everything in this base and eats, including the.
- 17:14Speaker 4: Bass and the catfish and everything like that.
- 17:17Speaker 13: So it's just always one of my favorite times a
- 17:20Speaker 13: year to be out on the water, especially in this area.
- 17:24Speaker 3: Lovely. What are you What are you rigged up? What's
- 17:27Speaker 3: your rig there, Chris?
- 17:30Speaker 13: Well, we we fished a variety of things. But as
- 17:33Speaker 13: I mentioned today, you know, as I mentioned earlier, the
- 17:36Speaker 13: fish are really keying in on shrimp. So I'm fishing
- 17:39Speaker 13: a voodoo shrimp, which is a plastic shrimp imitation bait.
- 17:44Speaker 13: I'll stick in front of the camera here.
- 17:45Speaker 12: Let's see if folks can see it.
- 17:47Speaker 13: Yah, voodoo shrimp about two and a half three feet
- 17:50Speaker 13: under a poppy. Fantastic And usually I'll fish that voodoo shrimp,
- 17:57Speaker 13: just not under the cork this time of the year,
- 17:59Speaker 13: just kind of relined it.
- 18:00Speaker 10: But things have slowed down a little bit.
- 18:02Speaker 13: Our tide quick moving about an hour ago, and the
- 18:05Speaker 13: fish really have stop more or less.
- 18:09Speaker 10: So, uh, I'm not.
- 18:11Speaker 13: All that uh optimistic about my one minute challenge.
- 18:16Speaker 3: Yeah, that doesn't bode well for a sixty second contest here, Uh,
- 18:21Speaker 3: louill let us know. Are you are you ready to
- 18:23Speaker 3: go for your for your one minute?
- 18:26Speaker 4: I am ready to go.
- 18:27Speaker 8: Man, Let's see we can make this happen.
- 18:30Speaker 13: All right, he's been a spot where I've caught I've
- 18:33Speaker 13: caught a couple of trout, and I've caught a couple
- 18:35Speaker 13: of catfishing here already. So let's see we get another
- 18:38Speaker 13: one to bit real quick.
- 18:39Speaker 3: All righty well, we'll reel up and we will begin
- 18:41Speaker 3: our timer when you cast.
- 18:46Speaker 10: All right, here we go.
- 18:50Speaker 3: Here we go, Chris mclusa one minute fishing for trcp.
- 18:56Speaker 4: Here we go.
- 18:59Speaker 13: I will spend it. Today's not really reflective of how
- 19:02Speaker 13: good the.
- 19:02Speaker 10: Fishing has been.
- 19:04Speaker 13: Yeah, you guys, meat Eater crew was was all down
- 19:06Speaker 13: at yourris a couple of weeks ago. Uh, and I
- 19:09Speaker 13: was down there at the same time. And uh, I'm
- 19:13Speaker 13: hoping y'all's experience was similar to the one that I had,
- 19:16Speaker 13: where we just thought pretty much whatever.
- 19:18Speaker 2: We wanted to to fight your stuff.
- 19:21Speaker 3: So let's see what we can make happen here, Phil,
- 19:27Speaker 3: how are we doing on time?
- 19:29Speaker 4: Got about twenty seconds left?
- 19:30Speaker 3: Twenty seconds on the clock.
- 19:31Speaker 13: Oh man, hop that cork poppin winny seconds.
- 19:36Speaker 10: The pressure.
- 19:39Speaker 13: I don't know if I could deal with the press fellas.
- 19:41Speaker 3: It'll be over soon, don't worry.
- 19:44Speaker 13: Oh, I just had a fight. Oh way, the court
- 19:48Speaker 13: went down and take straight back up.
- 19:50Speaker 6: Oh oh, that's the time right there.
- 19:53Speaker 3: That's your time, sixty seconds. We'll have to get you
- 19:56Speaker 3: back on here. Ce mac Man.
- 19:58Speaker 13: I'd be happy to anytime. I mean, you know, I
- 20:01Speaker 13: will like to, you know, throwing a plug for TRCP.
- 20:04Speaker 13: I mean, we're doing so much good work in the
- 20:07Speaker 13: marine fishery space right now, in addition to all the
- 20:10Speaker 13: other great work that the organization's doing on public lands
- 20:13Speaker 13: and water and everything else.
- 20:15Speaker 10: That we work on.
- 20:16Speaker 13: But you know, we're really making some headway on forge
- 20:19Speaker 13: fish conservation, make it some headway on improving data collection
- 20:23Speaker 13: for federal fisheries, and doing a lot of good habitat
- 20:27Speaker 13: restoration advocacy, especially in Louisiana and up and down the
- 20:31Speaker 13: Mississippi River basin. So I'd be happy to join you
- 20:35Speaker 13: guys anytime to talk about any of that stuff.
- 20:37Speaker 3: Wonderful. Well, hopefully you won't catch too much flak on
- 20:41Speaker 3: the Monday morning leadership call for failing to secure that
- 20:45Speaker 3: five hundred dollars donation, but please know that you're welcome
- 20:48Speaker 3: back at any point.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:51Speaker 13: I don't suspect I'm gonna get a pink slip or anything,
- 20:54Speaker 13: but I appreciate the opportunity.
- 20:56Speaker 3: But they did just catch you out fishing on a Thursday.
- 21:00Speaker 3: Well I look, I mean, oh no, he's gone time there.
- 21:06Speaker 3: Oh no, Oh, that's disappointing. I always enjoy a chance
- 21:09Speaker 3: to chat with my friend Chris there.
- 21:14Speaker 4: Phil.
- 21:14Speaker 3: Do we have any listener feedback for today, anything that
- 21:18Speaker 3: needs addressing.
- 21:19Speaker 6: I've got a couple things here is these questions for
- 21:21Speaker 6: seth Oh. Are you planning to participate in any fishing
- 21:25Speaker 6: competitions with Chester in the near future? Thank you for
- 21:28Speaker 6: your answer.
- 21:29Speaker 4: I don't know. I'd like Now Chester's in Wisconsin, I'd
- 21:31Speaker 4: like to get back and fish with those top notch
- 21:35Speaker 4: fishermen in the Upper Midwest, so hopefully we can make
- 21:37Speaker 4: some tournaments happen in Wisconsin.
- 21:40Speaker 3: Does the competition aspect of it is that appealing to
- 21:44Speaker 3: you or is it just another excuse to like get
- 21:46Speaker 3: out on the water X number of days this summer.
- 21:48Speaker 4: It's pretty appealing. I'm not like a very competitive person,
- 21:52Speaker 4: but when I was fishing those competitions here in Montana,
- 21:55Speaker 4: it made the fishing just like that much more fun.
- 21:59Speaker 4: Get your blood, boy, yeah, you know, just trying to
- 22:02Speaker 4: especially when you're fishing against a bunch of really good fishermen. Yeah,
- 22:05Speaker 4: it's like you just want to You just want to
- 22:08Speaker 4: do good. Just makes you fish harder, makes you fish smarter.
- 22:11Speaker 3: That's how I feel every day I come in this office.
- 22:14Speaker 3: I just want to do good.
- 22:17Speaker 6: This is a question for Randall. Yeah, it's from Matthew.
- 22:20Speaker 6: Has there been any interest or thought on an audiobook
- 22:22Speaker 6: on the history of Houndsman. Has this been a discussion
- 22:24Speaker 6: with Steve? There are groups in Texas trying to change
- 22:26Speaker 6: management from Mountain Lions and the stuff in Colorado.
- 22:29Speaker 3: Oh yeah, lots going on in the hound hunting and
- 22:32Speaker 3: mountain lion hunting world. We have not actually talked about
- 22:37Speaker 3: an audio book specifically on the history of Houndsman. We
- 22:40Speaker 3: are working right now on the Mountain Men audiobook, and
- 22:44Speaker 3: then we have a whole slate of audio projects, history
- 22:48Speaker 3: based audio projects coming out until I've you know, I'll
- 22:53Speaker 3: be forty one, I think by the point we do
- 22:55Speaker 3: all that. So if you don't know how old I am,
- 22:57Speaker 3: that probably doesn't mean anything to you. Also means you
- 23:00Speaker 3: probably didn't watch the episode to host on my birthday.
- 23:02Speaker 3: But yeah, no, that would be a great topic. And
- 23:05Speaker 3: I'm not sure that I can think of any resources
- 23:08Speaker 3: out there that I've encountered that would cover that history
- 23:14Speaker 3: specifically about hound hunting, but it's certainly a fascinating subject.
- 23:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:18Speaker 6: Sure, Troy asks that he loves the Meater movie review.
- 23:22Speaker 6: Has there ever been any discussion about book reviews on
- 23:25Speaker 6: the live show. I'll pipe in here first and I'll
- 23:27Speaker 6: say we we're probably not going to do books on
- 23:30Speaker 6: the live show, just because movies are a lot more
- 23:32Speaker 6: digestible and we can and more people can watch them
- 23:35Speaker 6: before we do the live show.
- 23:37Speaker 3: But the truth is, Troy, we have trouble getting people
- 23:40Speaker 3: to read emails, much less works of fiction and non fiction.
- 23:45Speaker 6: If you listen to the Mediater podcast occasionally we do
- 23:47Speaker 6: a segment called Steve Read's Books, so you don't have
- 23:49Speaker 6: to Those are usually books that you probably don't want
- 23:53Speaker 6: to read anyway, unless you're a guy like Steve, which hey,
- 23:56Speaker 6: maybe you are. But yeah, maybe we'll do like a
- 24:00Speaker 6: more legitimate book reviews here.
- 24:02Speaker 3: Yeah, we appreciate the love for the for the movie Club.
- 24:05Speaker 3: It's very fun. It's one of the highlights of my
- 24:08Speaker 3: professional life. So uh yeah, maybe we'll have to think
- 24:11Speaker 3: about books in the future.
- 24:13Speaker 4: I saw another comment there for Montana Walleye tour in caps,
- 24:19Speaker 4: just saying, oh, yeah, the people got to give the
- 24:22Speaker 4: people like the people want it.
- 24:24Speaker 3: It sounds like I'll write that down and we'll just
- 24:27Speaker 3: send that upstairs.
- 24:28Speaker 6: Yeah yeah, I can only speak for myself, but the
- 24:30Speaker 6: people want it.
- 24:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:34Speaker 6: Great, keep sending in questions. We'll do this again at
- 24:36Speaker 6: the end of the show, and yeah, move it along here.
- 24:40Speaker 3: Thank you Phil. Our next segment is Show and Tell.
- 24:46Speaker 1: Mania Show down, Man to show.
- 24:59Speaker 4: It's been so brought a rock? What else did you spect?
- 25:06Speaker 3: Oh I'm sorry about that, just lost in the moment.
- 25:10Speaker 3: It's that sin, it's that synthesizer. It's so rich.
- 25:14Speaker 4: Oh yeah, it's so rich.
- 25:15Speaker 3: It's like a hearty meal.
- 25:17Speaker 4: Just really quick.
- 25:18Speaker 6: Tyler says, thank god Spencer is in here with his rocks.
- 25:20Speaker 3: Oh I think we've got something much better than rocks
- 25:23Speaker 3: to share with you today, seth we do E're up first?
- 25:26Speaker 3: What'd you bring in today for Show and Tell?
- 25:28Speaker 4: I over the years have been collecting shell casings, and
- 25:34Speaker 4: I got a handful of them here.
- 25:35Speaker 8: M hmm.
- 25:36Speaker 4: These are my the ones that I have deemed to
- 25:39Speaker 4: be the more interesting ones that I've found over the years.
- 25:44Speaker 4: So let's see where do I want to start. Let's
- 25:45Speaker 4: start with this one. This one is head stamped thirty
- 25:50Speaker 4: Army super Speed. And this one I found in the deep,
- 25:54Speaker 4: deep dark spot on the Rocky Mountain Front. Actually, me
- 25:58Speaker 4: and my buddy Rick Haunting. We're hunting way back in
- 26:01Speaker 4: there one day and almost got cliffed out in the spot,
- 26:05Speaker 4: and we were kind of trying to pick our way
- 26:07Speaker 4: up through this really sketchy cliffy area and I threw
- 26:10Speaker 4: my foot up on a rock and heard some metal clinging,
- 26:13Speaker 4: and I looked down and this rifle case he was
- 26:16Speaker 4: sitting there and just one, just one, And I don't like.
- 26:21Speaker 4: I just thought to myself, like, you know what, maybe
- 26:23Speaker 4: we're not the only people that got ourselves into this
- 26:26Speaker 4: shitty situation.
- 26:27Speaker 3: That's that's the only place I like to find cigarette butts.
- 26:30Speaker 3: It's just like in a really weird place in the woods.
- 26:33Speaker 4: Yeah. The next one I got here is headstamped seven
- 26:39Speaker 4: point nine FS nineteen thirty nine, and it has TC
- 26:47Speaker 4: on it with the little uh. It's like the crescent
- 26:52Speaker 4: moon with the star. I really don't know a whole
- 26:57Speaker 4: lot about it. I've done some research and it looks
- 27:00Speaker 4: like it's Turkish ammo.
- 27:04Speaker 5: Yeah, A lot of those Eastern Bloc countries US use
- 27:08Speaker 5: those around.
- 27:08Speaker 4: Yeah. So I found this in Montana on the edge
- 27:11Speaker 4: of a meadow and there was about five of them
- 27:14Speaker 4: sitting there in a pile.
- 27:16Speaker 3: So someone was either doing some target practice or some
- 27:21Speaker 3: bad hunting.
- 27:22Speaker 4: I think they. I think they they were shooting a
- 27:24Speaker 4: bowl and just yeah, you know, I wanted to get
- 27:28Speaker 4: just pump them until he's done type of thing. At
- 27:31Speaker 4: least that's what I think. Got another one here that
- 27:35Speaker 4: just says SL forty five, So Saint Louis Armory nineteen
- 27:41Speaker 4: forty five. This one I found lane right next to
- 27:43Speaker 4: a stone point oh wild in Montana.
- 27:47Speaker 3: What what must have got a good hunting spot.
- 27:49Speaker 4: That's thirty six, I believe. Yeah. Yeah. This one, from
- 27:55Speaker 4: my understanding, was brought home from World War Two for
- 27:57Speaker 4: my great grandfather. He fought fought in Battle of the Bulge.
- 28:02Speaker 4: It's head stamped r A for Remilton Arms nineteen forty
- 28:06Speaker 4: three fifty BMG. And then this one is my favorite.
- 28:11Speaker 4: I have no clue what it is. It seems to
- 28:15Speaker 4: be like a big boar buffalo cartridge. Uh huh, no
- 28:19Speaker 4: head stamping at all. It just has a tiny little
- 28:21Speaker 4: pinhole in it.
- 28:22Speaker 3: So not a real not a modern, not a pocket.
- 28:26Speaker 7: No, not a center fire.
- 28:29Speaker 4: If anyone knows what this could be, please reach out.
- 28:34Speaker 3: Throw it in the chat.
- 28:35Speaker 5: You haven't like figured out even what what caliber it is?
- 28:39Speaker 4: Nope, which which one of these? It's that the one
- 28:43Speaker 4: on the left, one on the left there?
- 28:44Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, it doesn't have it's it's doesn't have
- 28:47Speaker 3: a it doesn't have like primer pocket. It doesn't have
- 28:50Speaker 3: a centerfire primer pocket.
- 28:52Speaker 4: I have no clue what it is.
- 28:54Speaker 3: Someone out there in the internet knows.
- 28:57Speaker 4: I found it in what would have been uh Crow
- 29:00Speaker 4: territory HM in Montana.
- 29:02Speaker 3: It's gotta be an old so an old old cartridge.
- 29:05Speaker 4: Yeah, hard to say what it is, but yeah, that's
- 29:08Speaker 4: I found that when I was a little punting about
- 29:10Speaker 4: three years ago.
- 29:11Speaker 3: And the aggregate of your collection, how many do you
- 29:14Speaker 3: have at home? These are just the highlights.
- 29:19Speaker 4: Got a bucket I have about peanut butter jar ten
- 29:22Speaker 4: or twelve. I do have a jar of like shell
- 29:25Speaker 4: casings of either critters I've killed or just like random
- 29:29Speaker 4: ones I've found. But yeah, these are kind of the
- 29:32Speaker 4: cooler ones that I have.
- 29:33Speaker 3: Well, thanks for bringing them in. Appreciate it, Brody. What
- 29:37Speaker 3: did you bring for us today?
- 29:38Speaker 5: Well, Seth brought bullet cartridges and I brought guns.
- 29:42Speaker 8: Mmmm.
- 29:44Speaker 7: Guns that'll make you glad you have the guns you
- 29:46Speaker 7: can buy.
- 29:46Speaker 3: Now we are living in the golden age.
- 29:53Speaker 5: We'll start with this beauty here, which is a Model
- 29:57Speaker 5: sixty seven Winchester twenty two. This is my dad's first gun.
- 30:02Speaker 5: I think he got it used, so he would have
- 30:06Speaker 5: got it like probably in the early fifties. It was
- 30:10Speaker 5: made probably in the forties, sold for like six bucks
- 30:14Speaker 5: back then, single shot Winchester twenty two. I shot a
- 30:17Speaker 5: lot of red squirrels with this, with this little sucker.
- 30:21Speaker 3: I like that the screw holding the barreled action into
- 30:26Speaker 3: the stock is just a big thumbscrew.
- 30:28Speaker 4: Yep. Yeah, you don't.
- 30:31Speaker 5: At some point my dad had a scope on here.
- 30:34Speaker 5: I never had a scope, and it's actually got it
- 30:38Speaker 5: o'clock yep. But we had to make a rear sight
- 30:41Speaker 5: for it, which is like it's not well done. But man,
- 30:46Speaker 5: I shot it pretty well when I was a little kid.
- 30:48Speaker 4: And that's just like a single shot yep.
- 30:50Speaker 7: Yeah, we do the old it's not loaded, folks.
- 30:52Speaker 3: It looks like an old cock. Yeah.
- 30:55Speaker 5: You pull that that spring back.
- 30:58Speaker 4: That's safety.
- 31:00Speaker 5: Yeah, right, and then you shouldn't shouldn't dry fire rim
- 31:04Speaker 5: fire guns. But yeah, that was It's a real safe
- 31:06Speaker 5: gun for a kid to learn on.
- 31:08Speaker 3: That's cool, very cool.
- 31:10Speaker 5: Then my first like real deer rifle. I think I
- 31:14Speaker 5: started hunt hunting with. Uh, sorry, Karan, I was pointing
- 31:18Speaker 5: at at you.
- 31:19Speaker 3: It looks like when you if you've drifted over here
- 31:22Speaker 3: a little bit, it looks like you're holding the muzzle
- 31:24Speaker 3: up to my head.
- 31:24Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I think I started saying a shot. But
- 31:29Speaker 5: this is my first real rifle, and it's a Winchester
- 31:32Speaker 5: Model ninety four thirty thirty. Like millions of deer hunters
- 31:37Speaker 5: started out with a version of this rifle. This one
- 31:41Speaker 5: was made before nineteen eighty three, when Winchester went to
- 31:46Speaker 5: a side eject and angle eject. This this comes out
- 31:51Speaker 5: right out the top, right in your face, you know.
- 31:54Speaker 5: If you're cranking awesome shots at running deer, which was common.
- 31:58Speaker 4: Back in the day, that's what happened.
- 32:01Speaker 5: It's kind of a pain, really, And because it's a
- 32:06Speaker 5: topic jacked. You can see these old cheap scope mounts
- 32:09Speaker 5: that around her mount the scope offset, so you have
- 32:13Speaker 5: to like lean over to the side to look through
- 32:15Speaker 5: the scope. So yeah, it's a relic and uh, I'm
- 32:20Speaker 5: glad I still have it.
- 32:22Speaker 4: Very cool man, that is, there's a lot of Pennsylvania
- 32:25Speaker 4: deer hunters that ran that same set up for many years.
- 32:29Speaker 5: Yeah, I still want to I want to take it
- 32:32Speaker 5: out and kill something with it.
- 32:33Speaker 3: Would be a great lion gun. Yeah, be a great
- 32:36Speaker 3: lion gun.
- 32:37Speaker 4: Yep.
- 32:38Speaker 3: Well for for my show and tell today, I brought
- 32:41Speaker 3: this book. And this is a book that I got.
- 32:46Speaker 3: It was in my grandfather's stuff. It's called The Gods
- 32:49Speaker 3: Were Kind by William Willis and inside it is inscribed
- 32:53Speaker 3: to Biarna J. Moultou, who's my grandfather Norwegian? If you
- 32:56Speaker 3: are curious about the name. Who is chief mate on
- 33:00Speaker 3: the SS Kettarak, the last ship I served as a seaman, partner,
- 33:05Speaker 3: friend and great shipmate with good wishes every good wish.
- 33:09Speaker 3: William Willis nineteen fifty six. And I found this and
- 33:12Speaker 3: I didn't really know what it was. I'd never heard
- 33:14Speaker 3: of this guy. But it's the story of him sailing
- 33:17Speaker 3: alone with his parrot and his cat from South America
- 33:22Speaker 3: to American Samoa on a raft made of seven balsa logs.
- 33:26Speaker 3: So he went down to South America. He picked out
- 33:28Speaker 3: seven balsa trees. They cut him down, and then he
- 33:31Speaker 3: just went to Samoa at age sixty one.
- 33:35Speaker 5: What's a nautical mind? What's the distance on that little salem?
- 33:39Speaker 3: Six seven hundred miles on a homemade raft, on a
- 33:43Speaker 3: homemade raft and then wild. The best part is he
- 33:48Speaker 3: after he wrote this book, and again this is just
- 33:50Speaker 3: like one of those characters he discovered after he wrote
- 33:52Speaker 3: this book. At the age of seventy one, he sailed
- 33:55Speaker 3: ten thousand miles from South America to Australia. And then
- 33:59Speaker 3: at age seventy four, he disappeared while trying to cross
- 34:04Speaker 3: the Atlantic, the North Atlantic at age seventy four.
- 34:08Speaker 7: Two out of three ain't bad.
- 34:10Speaker 3: No, not bad at all. They found his boat, he
- 34:14Speaker 3: was not on it, but they found his ship's log.
- 34:18Speaker 4: So wow.
- 34:19Speaker 3: Interesting character. And this book has significance to me because
- 34:24Speaker 3: it's where I first learned that mahi mahi were also
- 34:28Speaker 3: called dolphin, because I was reading this book at like
- 34:31Speaker 3: twelve years old, and I was like, man, he's killing
- 34:33Speaker 3: a lot of dolphins. He's just He's like, I caught
- 34:36Speaker 3: some more dolphins. I saw some dolphins. I killed them.
- 34:38Speaker 3: I ate them so like, I started baiting some hooks
- 34:40Speaker 3: with dolphin heads and I just thought this was very,
- 34:43Speaker 3: very strange, and so yeah, that opened my eyes to
- 34:48Speaker 3: the nomenclature that we use for that fish. I have
- 34:52Speaker 3: another sort of silly show, and tell Phil if you'll
- 34:57Speaker 3: bring that picture up. This photo is the other thing
- 35:00Speaker 3: I'd like to share with you guys. This week we
- 35:03Speaker 3: are recording Meet Eaters American History, volume two, about the
- 35:07Speaker 3: Mountain Men, and this photo was taken by yours truly
- 35:11Speaker 3: on Tuesday after a lunch of Thai food, and Steve
- 35:18Speaker 3: laid down and he attempted to use the helmet as
- 35:21Speaker 3: a pillow, but the extuar of the helmet, he found
- 35:24Speaker 3: the shell was too hard, so he thought, I wonder
- 35:27Speaker 3: if it feels good if I put my head in there,
- 35:29Speaker 3: which he did, and then he proceeded to take a
- 35:31Speaker 3: ten minute catnap on this very carpeted floor. So please
- 35:36Speaker 3: know that we are hard at work on the next
- 35:38Speaker 3: volume of Mediat's American History. And Steve did say because
- 35:43Speaker 3: he ate a bunch of noodles, and he said, I thought,
- 35:45Speaker 3: he's like I thought, marathon runners eat a bunch of noodles.
- 35:48Speaker 3: Before they run marathons. How do they do that? And
- 35:51Speaker 3: I said, I think you're supposed to do it the
- 35:52Speaker 3: night before. They're not hawking down spaghetti like immediately before
- 35:57Speaker 3: the race. So everybody learned something, alrighty. Our next segment
- 36:05Speaker 3: is a hot tip off. Hot tip Off time. Hot
- 36:12Speaker 3: tip off is where two members of the crew go
- 36:15Speaker 3: head to head with competing pieces of advice, and after
- 36:18Speaker 3: we hear each tip, we'll declare which one is hotter.
- 36:23Speaker 3: Take it away, Phil.
- 36:26Speaker 11: Mark Kenyon, Hey, guys, Mark Kenyon, here for another hot
- 36:32Speaker 11: tip off. And here's my suggestion for you. Pay more
- 36:36Speaker 11: attention to tracks. If you are out there hunting white
- 36:40Speaker 11: tails trying to kill a buck, especially a mature buck,
- 36:43Speaker 11: it's really useful to know exactly what you're looking for
- 36:46Speaker 11: when you're trying to figure out is this a dough track,
- 36:49Speaker 11: is this a buck track? Is this a big old
- 36:51Speaker 11: mature buck track. The best way I found to learn
- 36:55Speaker 11: how to identify a mature buck track is to actually
- 36:59Speaker 11: get a real mature buck hoof and test it for yourself. Now,
- 37:03Speaker 11: this is obviously not a real mature buck hoof. I
- 37:05Speaker 11: don't have that, But what I have done in the
- 37:07Speaker 11: past is taken off the hoof of a mature buck
- 37:10Speaker 11: I've killed, and then go take it and press it
- 37:14Speaker 11: into the dirt, press it into mud, press it in
- 37:17Speaker 11: at different angles, go to different types of locations, and
- 37:20Speaker 11: see what that buck's hoof print actually looked like in
- 37:23Speaker 11: real life. And then you will know yourself this kind
- 37:26Speaker 11: of buck makes that kind of track. It's an incredible
- 37:30Speaker 11: and simple way to get better identifying mature buck tracks.
- 37:33Speaker 11: And you can do it if you kill at least
- 37:35Speaker 11: one mature buck in your life. Save that hoof, test
- 37:38Speaker 11: it out. See what a mature buck print looks like
- 37:40Speaker 11: in the rain, See what it looks like in a
- 37:42Speaker 11: dusty sandy soil. It's very interesting, very helpful.
- 37:47Speaker 1: Jason Philps, I'm Jason Phelps, and here's my hot tip
- 37:53Speaker 1: here in New Mexico archery all cutting. It's been getting
- 37:56Speaker 1: pretty windy in the evenings, you know, from about three
- 37:58Speaker 1: to five, and one thing I wanted to share is
- 38:01Speaker 1: how I'm planning my evening hunts and even my morning
- 38:03Speaker 1: hunts is I will put a waypoint where I think
- 38:05Speaker 1: those elk a at and I will add wind to
- 38:07Speaker 1: that point so I can see what the active wind
- 38:09Speaker 1: is doing. You know, for instance, right now, it's blowing
- 38:12Speaker 1: seven miles an hour out of the southwest. I then
- 38:14Speaker 1: add in what are the thermals doing? Is the sun
- 38:16Speaker 1: hitting that face the creek draws, is they're running water,
- 38:22Speaker 1: you know how the wind could be affecting it, And
- 38:23Speaker 1: then I will plan my approach that way. That way,
- 38:27Speaker 1: there's no chance those elk are ever gonna you know,
- 38:29Speaker 1: smell me. So yeah, I'm always looking at that wind.
- 38:32Speaker 1: I'm checking when I get up in the morning before
- 38:34Speaker 1: I go to an area. Maybe I have to, you know,
- 38:36Speaker 1: go to an area a different direction than then as
- 38:39Speaker 1: the easiest direction. So add those waypoints, plan your hunts
- 38:44Speaker 1: that way, and you're never gonna fool in elk's nose.
- 38:47Speaker 1: So I'm always using this to make sure my approaches
- 38:51Speaker 1: are good as I'm calling my way into elk because
- 38:53Speaker 1: I'm approaching elk, because I'm hunting elk just in general,
- 38:56Speaker 1: you know, even for rifle hunters that are still hunting,
- 38:58Speaker 1: this is even more important.
- 39:00Speaker 12: At least I can hear these oaks.
- 39:01Speaker 3: So that's my hot tip.
- 39:03Speaker 1: Use on ex waypoints in the wind feature, and I
- 39:07Speaker 1: think you're gonna you know, and you find it very useful.
- 39:10Speaker 1: It's been pretty spot on this entire hunt.
- 39:14Speaker 3: Alrighty two hot tips there before you guys way in
- 39:19Speaker 3: and I hope you consider the uh the two tips
- 39:22Speaker 3: you've just heard. I saw perhaps what is my favorite
- 39:26Speaker 3: listener comment of all time here?
- 39:29Speaker 8: Uh.
- 39:30Speaker 3: Someone commented in regards to the mustache list Mark Kenyon,
- 39:35Speaker 3: is this Marks a strange teenage son? Yes? Mark does
- 39:41Speaker 3: look quite young when he gets rid of his facial hair.
- 39:45Speaker 3: So yeah.
- 39:46Speaker 6: Michael also asked why we keep showing this little kid?
- 39:48Speaker 6: And does he have working papers?
- 39:52Speaker 4: Oh, it's a crying shame that, yeah, got rid of
- 39:54Speaker 4: his mustage.
- 39:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:55Speaker 3: I don't know what labor law is in Michigan, but yeah,
- 39:57Speaker 3: we could run into some hot water if we keep
- 40:00Speaker 3: showing Mark without his mustache.
- 40:01Speaker 4: There.
- 40:01Speaker 3: Thank you both for those comments. That really made my day.
- 40:05Speaker 6: All right, we have a lot of votes for Phelps already,
- 40:08Speaker 6: just just to get the get in front of.
- 40:10Speaker 3: This all right, seth, what are your thoughts here?
- 40:14Speaker 4: Well, not a very popular opinion around these parts, but
- 40:18Speaker 4: I like whitetails more. Nelk, So I'm going with the
- 40:21Speaker 4: young boy Mark Kenyon.
- 40:23Speaker 3: But is that I mean, are you considering the actual
- 40:26Speaker 3: utility of the.
- 40:27Speaker 4: Tip and knowing what a big whitetail track looks like
- 40:32Speaker 4: is very helpful.
- 40:33Speaker 3: All right, Yeah, Brody.
- 40:34Speaker 5: I gotta go with felt because it's just applicable to
- 40:37Speaker 5: way more than elk.
- 40:39Speaker 4: That's true.
- 40:39Speaker 7: It's like, you know, name a big game.
- 40:42Speaker 5: Species and that tip is you can apply it.
- 40:45Speaker 3: Yep, yep. What I appreciated the most about Mark's tip
- 40:50Speaker 3: was I imagined him rolling around a golf bag with different
- 40:56Speaker 3: age hoofs in it because he's He's like, you want
- 41:01Speaker 3: to get a big buck hoof this this is just
- 41:03Speaker 3: this is another bucks.
- 41:06Speaker 4: I'll take the three and a half year old. I think.
- 41:10Speaker 3: You wouldn't have exactly, Yeah, he's got he doesn't have
- 41:14Speaker 3: that many big buck hoofs laying around. But yeah, I
- 41:16Speaker 3: I really enjoyed that. I have to agree, I think
- 41:20Speaker 3: with Brody and what seems to be the consensus of
- 41:24Speaker 3: the audience here.
- 41:26Speaker 8: I like.
- 41:27Speaker 3: I like the tip from Phelps. I do think, uh,
- 41:30Speaker 3: you know, a tip that you can carry with you
- 41:32Speaker 3: in any different situation just makes you Yeah, as a hunter.
- 41:34Speaker 5: Spot in stock, walk into a tree stand in the dark,
- 41:37Speaker 5: like that tip will work. It's not just an elk
- 41:40Speaker 5: elk hunting you know.
- 41:42Speaker 3: Tip M hm. Uh, I guess you could do the
- 41:46Speaker 3: the white tail tip with Elk and you know, bear hunting.
- 41:50Speaker 3: But it's a lot of weight to haul around.
- 41:53Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, a little, a little bigger hoof.
- 41:54Speaker 3: Yeah alrighty, So Phelps one, Phelps one. Congratulations to Jason Phelps.
- 42:02Speaker 6: And he doesn't want anything.
- 42:05Speaker 3: He can't make a donation.
- 42:07Speaker 6: Hey, no, we ran out of money because you just
- 42:09Speaker 6: got too many perfect games.
- 42:12Speaker 3: Oh I forgot about that, thanks Phil. Yeah, yeah, we had.
- 42:15Speaker 3: We had quite an interesting day on Monday. This week,
- 42:17Speaker 3: we'll have to tune into future Trivia episodes. Our next
- 42:22Speaker 3: guest today is Dante Perreno.
- 42:26Speaker 4: Uh.
- 42:27Speaker 3: He's coming to us live from Baldwinsville, New York, and
- 42:30Speaker 3: Dante recently caught a state record smallmouth bass, but chose
- 42:34Speaker 3: to release it before the New York Department of Environmental
- 42:37Speaker 3: Conservation could inspect the fish and verify the record. Dante,
- 42:42Speaker 3: Welcome to the show.
- 42:43Speaker 12: Hey guys, thanks for having me on.
- 42:45Speaker 3: So, Dante, thanks for joining us. I understand you had
- 42:48Speaker 3: a pretty good day on the water about a month ago.
- 42:51Speaker 3: Can you tell us what you were doing that morning
- 42:53Speaker 3: and how things started out?
- 42:55Speaker 14: Yeah, so it was a New York bassination Federation tournament
- 42:59Speaker 14: out of August. So I was on the Saint Lawrence
- 43:01Speaker 14: and it runs about one hundred miles to the mouth
- 43:04Speaker 14: of the Lake Ontario, and it was probably like a
- 43:08Speaker 14: seventy five mile run to where I was going, and
- 43:12Speaker 14: it was an area that I wasn't really familiar with.
- 43:14Speaker 14: I just found it Friday morning before I was bringing
- 43:16Speaker 14: my grandfather a load of frozen walleye before the tournament
- 43:19Speaker 14: that weekend there. It was a shortened day Friday, but
- 43:23Speaker 14: I had to make sure he was taken care of.
- 43:25Speaker 14: And then, yeah, I was honestly pretty crazy. Rolled in
- 43:29Speaker 14: there and caught two small ones and I was debating
- 43:32Speaker 14: about leaving, and I was kind of waiting for the
- 43:34Speaker 14: lake to lay down a little bit and hooked into
- 43:38Speaker 14: that giant fish and that cut me around for pretty
- 43:41Speaker 14: much the rest of the day before I had to
- 43:42Speaker 14: make the run back.
- 43:44Speaker 3: Can you tell us a little bit about the technique
- 43:47Speaker 3: you're using or the lower tackle or anything like that.
- 43:50Speaker 14: Yeah, So I was using garment live scope out in
- 43:53Speaker 14: about thirty feet and kind of just tracking him down
- 43:56Speaker 14: and there wasn't a lot of fish around, but I
- 43:58Speaker 14: was using a three eight ounce ned rigg heard with
- 44:02Speaker 14: Berkeley maxcent flat.
- 44:04Speaker 12: Nose minnow nice.
- 44:05Speaker 14: So it's real small, subtle presentation and just utilizing electronics
- 44:11Speaker 14: to find them and hunt them down. But I was
- 44:13Speaker 14: throwing it on a seven foot medium Fantasy's premiere Abu
- 44:17Speaker 14: Garcia with a revolt rocket.
- 44:21Speaker 5: I assume you knew you knew you had tied into
- 44:23Speaker 5: something pretty big when you hooked it, but like, what
- 44:27Speaker 5: was the reaction when you saw it next to the boat?
- 44:30Speaker 12: Yeah, I knew.
- 44:31Speaker 14: I thought it was like a six founder, Like I
- 44:33Speaker 14: knew it was like a good one. So it was fighting,
- 44:35Speaker 14: it was fighting hard and obviously was pretty heavy. And
- 44:37Speaker 14: then I was alone, didn't have a co English, so
- 44:39Speaker 14: I netted it myself. And then once I tried to
- 44:42Speaker 14: flop it in with like one arm with a net
- 44:44Speaker 14: and laid it down, and what a physit. I don't
- 44:47Speaker 14: know if you're familiar with fizzic some fish from deep water.
- 44:50Speaker 14: So I threw it on the live well lid and
- 44:52Speaker 14: then it was like covered up the whole live bult
- 44:54Speaker 14: lid and it was.
- 44:55Speaker 12: A it was a freak.
- 44:56Speaker 3: Could you explain the fizzing for folks that might not
- 45:00Speaker 3: Are you familiar with it?
- 45:01Speaker 12: Yeah?
- 45:02Speaker 14: So I like to relate it to like if you
- 45:03Speaker 14: were to go swimming in a pool or swimming anywhere
- 45:06Speaker 14: and you go to try to swim to the bottom,
- 45:07Speaker 14: like you'll feel that pressure on your ears. Like it's
- 45:10Speaker 14: a similar thing with fish. They have an air bladder,
- 45:13Speaker 14: so whenever you you don't even have to really pull
- 45:15Speaker 14: them out of deep water, but essentially whenever a fish
- 45:18Speaker 14: comes up and change an elevation happens really quick, then
- 45:21Speaker 14: their air bladder will like puff up. You keep them
- 45:24Speaker 14: out of the water for like maybe more than a
- 45:25Speaker 14: minute to thirty seconds. So use like a little needle
- 45:29Speaker 14: with a plastic insert from New York's Barbelly. It makes
- 45:33Speaker 14: like the best one in my opinion. But you basically
- 45:34Speaker 14: prick the fish in this air bladder like four spine
- 45:38Speaker 14: over lined up with the anal poor just basically directly
- 45:41Speaker 14: behind their one fin, and you'll lay them in the
- 45:44Speaker 14: water in the live bulb kind of in your hand
- 45:46Speaker 14: and level them out and you'll release the air and
- 45:49Speaker 14: it'll bubble out. But you want to make sure you
- 45:51Speaker 14: prick it obviously in the right place, and you'll let
- 45:54Speaker 14: it bubble out and just kind of hold it in
- 45:55Speaker 14: your hands like this until the fish will right itself
- 45:58Speaker 14: and then once it writes itself, should be good to.
- 46:01Speaker 12: Live all day.
- 46:02Speaker 14: Because I caught that fish early, and that was my
- 46:04Speaker 14: first thing, was like I was thinking. I was like,
- 46:06Speaker 14: I keep this thing alive because it was early on
- 46:08Speaker 14: in the day and they had an eighty mile run
- 46:10Speaker 14: back into the hot summer day.
- 46:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 46:12Speaker 3: And just so folks are clear, I know, like in
- 46:14Speaker 3: Alaska you're required to pop the air bladder on some
- 46:18Speaker 3: of those fish before you release them. But this is
- 46:20Speaker 3: not required. You're just doing this. This is an extra
- 46:23Speaker 3: step you're taking to make sure that fish survives.
- 46:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 46:27Speaker 12: Yeah, I mean it's true.
- 46:28Speaker 14: It's preached more and more in tournaments up here because
- 46:31Speaker 14: there's a lot of folks that fish tournaments on the
- 46:33Speaker 14: Saint Lawrence and more and more that are coming to
- 46:35Speaker 14: that aren't accustomed to catching deep small mouth or deep
- 46:38Speaker 14: fish wherever. Yeah, so try to preach that the best
- 46:41Speaker 14: we can to keep this fishery healthy.
- 46:44Speaker 4: Yeah. In Alaska, we're required to carry what's called a
- 46:46Speaker 4: deep release. Oh that's right. Yeah, that's what you Basically
- 46:49Speaker 4: they come up like you'll catch a rock fish comes up,
- 46:51Speaker 4: the bladders hanging out of its mouth, eyes are all
- 46:53Speaker 4: puffed out and then you release, You basically send them
- 46:56Speaker 4: back to the bottom with a bunch of weight.
- 46:57Speaker 3: Yep, that's what I was thinking of. Yeah, I misspoke
- 47:00Speaker 3: the deeper least rig uh Dante. I mean, did you
- 47:04Speaker 3: did you know it was a small mouth the whole time?
- 47:06Speaker 3: Or were you curious at all?
- 47:09Speaker 8: Like?
- 47:09Speaker 3: What do I have on here? Are you just like
- 47:11Speaker 3: this is a big smally, just business as usual.
- 47:15Speaker 14: I was hoping it wasn't a drum, Like it crossed
- 47:18Speaker 14: through my head that it might be a drum, just
- 47:20Speaker 14: because it was like the way it was fighting, was
- 47:22Speaker 14: coming all the way to the boat and then swimming
- 47:23Speaker 14: all the way back down so you'll run into freshwater.
- 47:26Speaker 14: Drum or cheap had cheap said is what other people
- 47:29Speaker 14: call them. But I was pretty certain it was it
- 47:32Speaker 14: was a bass, just the way you could kind of
- 47:34Speaker 14: feel them shaking their head whenever you're fighting.
- 47:36Speaker 12: So usually the drums like a couple of real.
- 47:39Speaker 14: Long runs, but the pass tend to like, I don't know,
- 47:42Speaker 14: you can catch a lot of them and you're in
- 47:43Speaker 14: the zone. You can almost feel like they're the head
- 47:45Speaker 14: shape and it feels like a bass. But I was
- 47:48Speaker 14: just hoping that it was and it wasn't a drum basically.
- 47:50Speaker 3: So you so then you kept fishing for the day.
- 47:54Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 47:55Speaker 14: So I was in points standing wise, it's like three
- 47:58Speaker 14: cumulative tournaments and they take the top six in the state,
- 48:01Speaker 14: and I was like behind in the stands. So I
- 48:03Speaker 14: needed to catch like twenty eight to thirty pounds in
- 48:06Speaker 14: order to make the top six. So I know as
- 48:09Speaker 14: soon as I caught that I need to catch like
- 48:11Speaker 14: four more minimum five pounders.
- 48:13Speaker 12: In order to even have a shot.
- 48:15Speaker 14: So it was just like visit it through the light,
- 48:18Speaker 14: bull checked like five minutes later to make sure it
- 48:20Speaker 14: was standing up straight and looked healthy as a whrse.
- 48:23Speaker 14: So just kept going throughout the day and it was
- 48:26Speaker 14: pretty pretty crazy day full of emotions.
- 48:28Speaker 3: So the record has not crossed your mind yet, You're
- 48:32Speaker 3: just solely focused on that total at the end of
- 48:36Speaker 3: the day.
- 48:37Speaker 14: Yeah, I didn't even like once I voted it, Like
- 48:39Speaker 14: I didn't even really think about the record at all,
- 48:42Speaker 14: And not until I got all the way back to
- 48:44Speaker 14: weigh in and weighed it and then the scale at
- 48:46Speaker 14: nine even, and a few guys were like saying, I
- 48:48Speaker 14: call the DC, called the DC, and they're like, that's
- 48:50Speaker 14: a new state record. I knew it was an eight
- 48:53Speaker 14: and changed from Kyuga, but I didn't really.
- 48:56Speaker 5: What what what is the existing state record?
- 49:00Speaker 14: So it was eight pounds and six ounces. But the
- 49:04Speaker 14: near DC did certify the one that I caught over
- 49:09Speaker 14: the last couple of weeks, I think if they've made
- 49:11Speaker 14: it official.
- 49:11Speaker 12: So I got them all.
- 49:12Speaker 14: The witnesses signatures, length, girth, and then all the scale
- 49:18Speaker 14: certification and calibration and everything that they needed to get official.
- 49:22Speaker 14: But yeah, like you said, I mean, whenever we called them,
- 49:25Speaker 14: they said that they didn't have an EOC officer that
- 49:28Speaker 14: could come on site. So they're like, you, if you
- 49:33Speaker 14: want the record officially, then you have to keep it,
- 49:35Speaker 14: put it on ice.
- 49:36Speaker 12: Yeah, we'll call the next day.
- 49:38Speaker 14: But like, we're not saying that you're gonna get it.
- 49:41Speaker 14: We're not saying you're not going to get it if
- 49:42Speaker 14: you release it.
- 49:43Speaker 3: Sure, So so if you were to, if you would
- 49:45Speaker 3: have held onto that fish and killed it, you could
- 49:48Speaker 3: have been sort of guaranteed that this would get certified.
- 49:51Speaker 3: But instead you you trusted that or at least you
- 49:56Speaker 3: wanted to release it enough that you'd rather the fish
- 49:58Speaker 3: survive and go through sort of through the more I
- 50:01Speaker 3: guess the less certain route of taking all those steps
- 50:06Speaker 3: to certify it.
- 50:07Speaker 12: Yeah, exactly.
- 50:08Speaker 14: I mean I didn't want to selfishly take that fish's
- 50:11Speaker 14: life over. I mean it had to bend twenty to
- 50:13Speaker 14: twenty five years old in order to get nine pounds.
- 50:16Speaker 4: So wow, that's awesome. How did you end up that
- 50:18Speaker 4: day in the tournament?
- 50:20Speaker 14: I ended up when I had thirty one and change
- 50:23Speaker 14: thirty one point four I think was a total for
- 50:26Speaker 14: best five.
- 50:26Speaker 12: So I ended up taking it home and.
- 50:28Speaker 3: Then quite a day.
- 50:30Speaker 4: Congrats, I appreciate it.
- 50:32Speaker 12: Thank you.
- 50:34Speaker 3: So when you rolled up to the way and then
- 50:36Speaker 3: you should pulled that fish out, I mean, what was
- 50:39Speaker 3: the reaction from from the dock there?
- 50:42Speaker 14: Yeah, everyone was going crazy. I doesn't really expect in it.
- 50:46Speaker 14: And then like I turned around to like grab it
- 50:47Speaker 14: out of the bag and then hold it up, and
- 50:49Speaker 14: it was like, I don't know, twenty thirty people standing
- 50:52Speaker 14: there with all their phones out, like freaking out. So
- 50:54Speaker 14: it was it's kind of crazy.
- 50:57Speaker 3: Yeah, And what was your what was your previous big
- 51:00Speaker 3: prior to that? Just like in your in your life
- 51:02Speaker 3: of fishing.
- 51:04Speaker 14: I caught a seven pound, two ounce one in July
- 51:08Speaker 14: practicing for the thousand Island open out of Kingston. Gotch
- 51:12Speaker 14: was that one was like old and the crap had
- 51:15Speaker 14: like definitely passed its prime. Yeah, this fit like healthy
- 51:19Speaker 14: and built. So this one was it looked a lot different.
- 51:23Speaker 14: But like in my whenever I got that seven pounder
- 51:25Speaker 14: of the boat, it was just like so old that
- 51:27Speaker 14: so many just beat up marks on it that it
- 51:29Speaker 14: looked almost looked bigger than this one. But this one
- 51:31Speaker 14: that just built with shoulders and had a crazy frame
- 51:35Speaker 14: on it.
- 51:35Speaker 3: So that's awesome.
- 51:37Speaker 4: That is awesome.
- 51:38Speaker 8: So uh.
- 51:40Speaker 3: Are you So do you have more tournaments up ahead?
- 51:42Speaker 8: Then?
- 51:43Speaker 3: I mean, I guess it's kind of all downhill from here.
- 51:46Speaker 3: Right with the a state record smally and a big day,
- 51:49Speaker 3: I mean, what's what's next for you?
- 51:51Speaker 12: It's only gonna be hard to top that.
- 51:53Speaker 14: But I mean it ran into some unfortunate Look, last
- 51:56Speaker 14: weekend was the last tournament up on the river, and
- 52:00Speaker 14: and I had my lower unit go out, So I
- 52:01Speaker 14: was planning on doing the sixty second fish. Oh yeah,
- 52:06Speaker 14: it's a fish with you guys, But yeah, we'll get you.
- 52:09Speaker 3: So we'll have to get you back on for that.
- 52:12Speaker 3: I have a feeling you might be a competitive candidate.
- 52:18Speaker 14: When you guys messed me a few weeks ago, and
- 52:20Speaker 14: then last weekend it literally just went out. So I'm
- 52:22Speaker 14: gonna be down for a few weeks, but hopefully I'll
- 52:25Speaker 14: still be able to get out in November and just
- 52:27Speaker 14: catch some fish for fun because they're they're definitely plugging
- 52:30Speaker 14: that time of yere.
- 52:31Speaker 3: Nice well, Dante, We appreciate you coming on. It's an
- 52:36Speaker 3: awesome story. Congrats on the fish, and kudos to you
- 52:40Speaker 3: for releasing it. You know, it's it's it seems like
- 52:43Speaker 3: it wasn't a question in your mind, but you did
- 52:46Speaker 3: the right thing for that fish, and uh, it's just
- 52:49Speaker 3: a very cool story all around.
- 52:51Speaker 12: Thanks man, I appreciate it. Thanks for having me on.
- 52:53Speaker 3: We'll talk to you.
- 52:56Speaker 4: Thanks show.
- 52:57Speaker 12: Thanks man, have a good one.
- 52:59Speaker 4: That's a fish guy that you can tell. Oh yeah,
- 53:02Speaker 4: fishy guy.
- 53:03Speaker 3: Yeah, he's just like he's he's a cool customer.
- 53:05Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, I would like to fish with him someday.
- 53:07Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 53:08Speaker 3: I have a feeling he has a few spots he
- 53:10Speaker 3: could take us too.
- 53:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 53:13Speaker 3: Well, gang, I'm sorry to say, but that brings us
- 53:17Speaker 3: to the end of the show. Save for some listener comments, Phil,
- 53:21Speaker 3: what do you got for us? Last call for comments, Yeah,
- 53:24Speaker 3: now drop them in the chat. Please please.
- 53:26Speaker 6: Also, if you guys want, there's a really easy thing
- 53:28Speaker 6: you can do for those who keep coming to the
- 53:30Speaker 6: show live or miss it or whatever. If you go
- 53:33Speaker 6: to your YouTube settings. There's if you go to the
- 53:35Speaker 6: met eater podcast network account, because it's usually like a
- 53:38Speaker 6: little bell somewhere that you can click next to the
- 53:41Speaker 6: subscribe button. And if you're thinking, oh, I don't want
- 53:45Speaker 6: to be notified every time they put out a podcast episode,
- 53:48Speaker 6: because sometimes they put out an episode every day, sometimes two,
- 53:52Speaker 6: you can just you can change your settings that you
- 53:53Speaker 6: get a notification only when we go live for for
- 53:56Speaker 6: a live stream, and this is the only program in
- 53:58Speaker 6: which we do that. So if you want to get
- 54:01Speaker 6: notified every time this show goes live, so you don't
- 54:03Speaker 6: miss it, and you can watch it at work, hide
- 54:05Speaker 6: it from your boss, but your boss guess what, he's
- 54:08Speaker 6: also watching it?
- 54:09Speaker 3: Most likely, Yeah, everybody's tuning in.
- 54:13Speaker 4: Everyone's tuning in.
- 54:15Speaker 6: And also we will post this live and so in
- 54:18Speaker 6: your subscription feed you'll see it. I'm going to try
- 54:20Speaker 6: to do it the night before now. And then there's
- 54:21Speaker 6: a little notify me button on the individual video. So
- 54:24Speaker 6: if you just want to get notified about a single video,
- 54:27Speaker 6: you can do that as well.
- 54:28Speaker 4: So that's one thing you can do.
- 54:30Speaker 3: Can we get a round of applause in the chat
- 54:32Speaker 3: for Phil here, because he's just taking this live show
- 54:35Speaker 3: to the next level.
- 54:37Speaker 4: By by by reminding you to turn on your notifications? Yeah?
- 54:41Speaker 3: Yeah, what do you got for a film?
- 54:43Speaker 6: Docton asks Utah proposed change to the changes to the
- 54:46Speaker 6: rifle and muzzleloader hunts on my unit for the next
- 54:48Speaker 6: five years. They proposed open site rifles and traditional muzzleoaders, flintlock,
- 54:53Speaker 6: et cetera. They want to increase deer herd's opinions.
- 54:57Speaker 5: I'm not fall open site rifle and true, I think
- 55:01Speaker 5: it's just that they took away the option to use
- 55:03Speaker 5: a scope generally.
- 55:05Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I think there are a couple of
- 55:06Speaker 3: different places across the West that are considering making some
- 55:09Speaker 3: changes to the legal technology. Yeah, it's it's a tough question.
- 55:15Speaker 3: It's tough. It's tough to roll things back once guys
- 55:18Speaker 3: are using them and they're and they're used to them.
- 55:21Speaker 3: But I think, you know, if that's what needs to
- 55:24Speaker 3: be done to conserve the resource, and that's what the
- 55:29Speaker 3: state or the managers think is most appropriate. It's kind
- 55:32Speaker 3: of hard to argue with it, but I'm just not
- 55:35Speaker 3: familiar enough with that particular proposal.
- 55:38Speaker 5: It's like roll like you said, rolling back, kind of
- 55:41Speaker 5: like a traditional use pattern. Like I don't know, that's
- 55:47Speaker 5: hard man, Like I like, I'd rather see him cut
- 55:51Speaker 5: tag numbers.
- 55:52Speaker 3: Yeah, That's what I'm curious, is, like, have they is
- 55:55Speaker 3: it the case that they've cut tag numbers and they're
- 55:57Speaker 3: cut still and the and the shortened seasons and they
- 55:59Speaker 3: still don't if this is the last tool in the toolbox.
- 56:02Speaker 3: I guess I sure and understand it. But yeah, rolling
- 56:04Speaker 3: things back and taking things away.
- 56:06Speaker 5: There's an argument to be made, like a serious argument
- 56:09Speaker 5: to be made against doing that, simply because you could
- 56:13Speaker 5: say you're less accurate, more wounded deer.
- 56:16Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, I.
- 56:17Speaker 3: Always think about that when when you know it's it's
- 56:21Speaker 3: there's not a right answer, no, but like, yes, certain
- 56:24Speaker 3: technologies are more effective and for better or worse, like
- 56:28Speaker 3: that might lead to increased harvest, but it also probably
- 56:33Speaker 3: hopefully leads to less you know, wound laws.
- 56:37Speaker 6: Yeah, Brent is asking Randall, is it cheating if I
- 56:41Speaker 6: have to google the spelling of a meat eater crossword
- 56:43Speaker 6: ansle answer. It sucks to suck at spelling as someone
- 56:46Speaker 6: who just got dinged for a for a misspelled word
- 56:49Speaker 6: the other day.
- 56:49Speaker 3: Yeah, And I would like to point out I I
- 56:53Speaker 3: appreciate the support and the YouTube comments. I did think
- 56:56Speaker 3: that crystalis should have counted if chrysalis is the answer,
- 57:01Speaker 3: And I noticed that there are quite a few of
- 57:03Speaker 3: you out there who agreed with me and I your
- 57:06Speaker 3: support is acknowledged and appreciated.
- 57:10Speaker 6: It was acknowledged by me as well as well, but
- 57:13Speaker 6: not as appreciated as much.
- 57:14Speaker 3: I guess. I guess it depends on how you're googling
- 57:19Speaker 3: the spelling. That seems like a slippery slope. So you're
- 57:22Speaker 3: typing in the misspelled word to get the right word,
- 57:26Speaker 3: or are you saying, like I'm trying to think of this.
- 57:28Speaker 4: Word, how do you spell?
- 57:29Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 57:30Speaker 6: Well, my opinion is that it's only going to slow
- 57:32Speaker 6: you down, and that's a longer time is going to
- 57:35Speaker 6: bring your score down. So by googling spelling, you're kind
- 57:37Speaker 6: of just you're shooting yourself in the knee.
- 57:39Speaker 5: There and at a certain point it's just going to
- 57:41Speaker 5: cause you to not get the next.
- 57:43Speaker 4: Series of yeah. Correct.
- 57:45Speaker 3: My general crossword philosophy is some days I will not
- 57:52Speaker 3: look at any hints and I won't flip over any tiles.
- 57:55Speaker 3: I mean not on the meat Eater crossword, of course,
- 57:58Speaker 3: But like when I'm in the New York Times, some
- 58:00Speaker 3: days I hold myself very honest and accountables, and some
- 58:05Speaker 3: days I just want to have fun doing a crossboard
- 58:07Speaker 3: and so so you know, you're playing against yourself. It's
- 58:10Speaker 3: kind of like golf. So just you know, if you
- 58:13Speaker 3: have to wipe a stroke every now and then, I
- 58:14Speaker 3: don't think there's anything wrong with that, Seth.
- 58:18Speaker 6: This is this is one a single question. But when
- 58:20Speaker 6: you were doing going over your show and tell stuff,
- 58:23Speaker 6: there was an ongoing conversation happening in the live chat
- 58:26Speaker 6: about what some of those rounds might be. Yeah, he's
- 58:29Speaker 6: giving you tips, but this is honestly, this is a question.
- 58:31Speaker 6: But this is me Phil giving you a tip, Seth
- 58:34Speaker 6: to maybe revisit the live chat after the show. Yeah,
- 58:36Speaker 6: because there was some discussion happening that was over my head.
- 58:39Speaker 6: Oh okay, Ife, it won't be over you go through it.
- 58:41Speaker 4: I'll go through it.
- 58:42Speaker 6: Yeah, And this is for all of you. If each
- 58:44Speaker 6: of you could propose one very specific topic for an
- 58:46Speaker 6: upcoming book in the med Eater lineup?
- 58:48Speaker 4: What would your topic be?
- 58:49Speaker 6: And I'd say sky's the limit here, not like realistically,
- 58:52Speaker 6: like you personally, if you could pitch a book to
- 58:54Speaker 6: be published as a part of the mediat lineup, something
- 58:57Speaker 6: that really that you're really into.
- 59:01Speaker 3: Boy, Boy, that's tough. That is tough, because I have
- 59:05Speaker 3: a pile of books that need to be written, as
- 59:10Speaker 3: does Brody.
- 59:11Speaker 5: Yeah, we've got there's plenty of books in your future
- 59:15Speaker 5: coming from Meat Eater. I recently and I still would
- 59:19Speaker 5: like to see it happen. We a few years, several
- 59:22Speaker 5: years back, we did the hunting guide books, the Big
- 59:27Speaker 5: Game in small game hunting guide books. I one of
- 59:30Speaker 5: my recent pitches is doing a similar thing with fishing.
- 59:35Speaker 5: But we were testing the waters to see if there's
- 59:38Speaker 5: a demand for it or not. So send us if
- 59:41Speaker 5: you want it, send us a message.
- 59:45Speaker 4: As a photographer here at meat Eater, I wouldn't mind
- 59:49Speaker 4: seeing just a fantastically beautiful coffee table book.
- 59:53Speaker 5: Of which has been we pitched that up, all the
- 59:56Speaker 5: all the.
- 59:56Speaker 4: Photos that have been taken over the years here. Be
- 59:59Speaker 4: pretty cool.
- 1:00:01Speaker 5: Wouldn't be cheap though, No, not, no glossy coffee table
- 1:00:05Speaker 5: books are, but it would be worth it.
- 1:00:07Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, collectors.
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: Worth every penny, I think. Yeah, I think so even
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: if you could, you know, if you could get some
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: autograph copies, maybe do a limited release of Seth Morris
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: autograph copies.
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: I like that idea.
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: I think my idea that's just come to me now.
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: It's not something that I've been dreaming up, but I
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: think it would be useful to have like a sort
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: of a reference and history about you know, public lands,
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: the North American model, explaining different land management agencies and
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: their history and sort of what their priorities are as
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: an agency, and just sort of giving people the vocabulary
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: and context to talk about policy that affects hunters and anglers,
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: you know, in a way that's like conversational.
- 1:00:54Speaker 7: Yeah, Like that's the challenge is to yeah.
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: Because you can get bogged down and like the the
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: legally and the administrative and bureaucratic jargon. But obviously, like
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: there's no shortage of interest in that from our audience.
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: Like people love that stuff and they want to know
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: more and they want to be more involved. So I
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: think like a sand dictionary or encyclopedia of conservation would be.
- 1:01:18Speaker 7: I think it's like.
- 1:01:20Speaker 5: Out being out here in the West, you're just like
- 1:01:22Speaker 5: kind of automatically more burst in that stuff. Like I'm
- 1:01:27Speaker 5: sure there's a lot of like I didn't know what
- 1:01:29Speaker 5: in hell BLM was when I lived in Pennsylvania, right,
- 1:01:32Speaker 5: So there's like a lot of things that a lot
- 1:01:35Speaker 5: of people from other parts of the country that could
- 1:01:39Speaker 5: they could learn a lot, you know.
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: Oh yeah, no. I remember when I was when I
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: was in college, I was finishing up and I really
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: wanted to go bear hunting, and I wanted to go
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: to Montana, and I wanted to go bear hunting in Montana.
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: And I remember having this realization like National Forest, you
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: can hunt on National Forest. And then I looked at
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: a map of Montana and saw the green on the map,
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: and I was like, oh, of course I can go
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: shoot a bear there like practically half the state.
- 1:02:09Speaker 8: You know.
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: And but that was like a moment that opened my
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: eyes when I realized like that these lands are accessible
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: and opened all and opened to hunting because I was
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: more familiar coming from the East or the Midwest with
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: you know, national parks and the more sort of hands
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: off public lands. So that's my that's my half cooked
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: book pitch, which maybe should be a new segment.
- 1:02:32Speaker 6: Here Iron Hops asks if he should get Jack White
- 1:02:34Speaker 6: tickets tonight or banked his bank time for the rut
- 1:02:37Speaker 6: here in Wisconsin. The answer is Jack White tickets. Next question,
- 1:02:41Speaker 6: Come on, Randall, this is your first time in the
- 1:02:45Speaker 6: program since Louisiana. Oh, just like, get me a quick
- 1:02:49Speaker 6: fishing update, man.
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: Louisiana was a lot of fun, met a lot of
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: people from all around the country. Everybody had their own,
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: like you know, personal passion hunting and fishing speaking, so
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: we got to like just talk to people about deer
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: hunting or pig hunting or whatever they did. But the
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: fishing was fantastic. Every day we went out and kind
- 1:03:15Speaker 3: of had a different program, Like we fished different looking stuff,
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: caught a bunch of different fish, different species. It was
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: consistent throughout the day, which is nice. Like you'd get
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: into him starting right out of the first thing in
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: the morning, and then you'd be catching him up till lunchtime,
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: and then you never know when you get a big
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: and yeah, we had some big black drum, some big
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: red fish.
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: You kind of never know what you're gonna get.
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: You never know what you're gonna get Yeah, we were
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: fishing this one redfish spot and we'd caught a couple
- 1:03:45Speaker 3: out of there, and then I hooked something that just
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: went straight out into the gulf, like under the boat
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: and straight out to the gulf, just ripping line and
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: popped off, and the guy it's like, oh, that was
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: a shark. And Steve cast in the same place like
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: thirty seconds later and another struck grabbed it and he
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: actually boted that. But it was just like, yeah, I mean,
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: coming from a place where you're either catching a trout
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: or a whitefish, you know, it's cool to be in
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: a real diverse fishery.
- 1:04:11Speaker 4: Yeah. We caught a lot of different species.
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: And then we went out on the dock and just
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: caught weird catfish. Yeah, that was a lot of fun.
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: And there was big garb rolling right grolling.
- 1:04:18Speaker 3: In a wild place, a lot of pelicans just like
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: a super cool birds. Skaters, skaters. Yeah, I loved it.
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: I loved it.
- 1:04:25Speaker 4: Yeah, cool, cool place.
- 1:04:27Speaker 6: And Michael we address this, addressed this at the top
- 1:04:30Speaker 6: of the show. He's asking about the trivia win being overturned.
- 1:04:33Speaker 4: Brody seems very unbothered by it. If he has bothered,
- 1:04:36Speaker 4: he's hiding it very well.
