- 0:04Speaker 1: Here we are. We know Alana's happy. An ex Dodger
- 0:07Speaker 1: is on here with us Anthony Bonda. She's so happy
- 0:10Speaker 1: right now. Did you know Alana has a crush on
- 0:12Speaker 1: you also?
- 0:13Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no, no no.
- 0:16Speaker 3: We I believe we met and we had a great conversation.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Oh sorry, I said, I will tell him what I
- 0:24Speaker 2: said earlier. I said, the ladies of Los Angeles are
- 0:28Speaker 2: super bummed that Anthony Bonda is no longer in LA.
- 0:31Speaker 2: He was a fan favorite. I said, they love the tats.
- 0:34Speaker 2: He's a good looking guy. I could be his mother,
- 0:37Speaker 2: So I don't have a crush on him. I think
- 0:38Speaker 2: he's a good player, and I think that the Minnesota
- 0:42Speaker 2: Twins just got a hell of an arm. That was
- 0:44Speaker 2: my point. AJ thank you as I take the bus
- 0:47Speaker 2: tracks off of me for this interview. Hi, Anthony.
- 0:54Speaker 1: M you liked that you made him smile, He made
- 0:56Speaker 1: him blush a little bit. Alanna, you should be proud
- 0:58Speaker 1: of that.
- 0:59Speaker 2: He's a good guy. He's a good guy, and Minnesota
- 1:01Speaker 2: just got better. Their bullpen just got a lot better.
- 1:04Speaker 1: All right, let's let's jump in here. You were with
- 1:06Speaker 1: the Dodgers last year back to back World series. Then
- 1:09Speaker 1: you get to call your traded. What was that phone call?
- 1:13Speaker 4: Oh? H yeah, that that you know one. Don't get
- 1:19Speaker 4: me wrong. I love that organization. Everybody involved in it.
- 1:22Speaker 4: They've done right by me, loved me. Everything about it
- 1:27Speaker 4: was great.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:29Speaker 4: I when I got the phone call, it was more
- 1:32Speaker 4: of like, uh, you know, shock one, and it's just
- 1:36Speaker 4: like I hadn't I couldn't get any words out.
- 1:39Speaker 3: It was so shocked.
- 1:40Speaker 4: Uh, you know, I wasn't shocked in the sense of
- 1:44Speaker 4: maybe a potential trade at some point.
- 1:47Speaker 3: You know, I'm not oblivious. There's a lot of lefties
- 1:50Speaker 3: and they're really.
- 1:51Speaker 4: Talented and stuff, and just the whole DFA process was
- 1:55Speaker 4: like a shocker to me. But that just comes with like,
- 1:58Speaker 4: you know, the roster, flexibit lily and stuff like that,
- 2:01Speaker 4: as guys know.
- 2:02Speaker 3: But you could tell.
- 2:05Speaker 4: I could tell that Gomes was not happy in the
- 2:08Speaker 4: sense of like wanting to be on that.
- 2:10Speaker 3: End of the phone call.
- 2:12Speaker 4: But yeah, we uh you know, he just kind of
- 2:16Speaker 4: you know, let me know, and then that was kind
- 2:18Speaker 4: of it, and he told me he'll reach back in
- 2:21Speaker 4: a couple of days and kind of go from there.
- 2:23Speaker 4: But yeah, there wasn't very much exchange. It was just
- 2:26Speaker 4: more of an utterly shocked and that was it was
- 2:29Speaker 4: a business.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, business, you know. And and the thing is
- 2:33Speaker 3: is like.
- 2:33Speaker 5: You've been on a lot of teams, so this isn't
- 2:35Speaker 5: the first time you switched in.
- 2:36Speaker 4: Yeah, And I just think where it's like, you know,
- 2:39Speaker 4: you can't take that very personally, right, because at the
- 2:42Speaker 4: end of the day, those are great people over there.
- 2:44Speaker 4: They're amazing. They take care of the families. Uh, you know,
- 2:47Speaker 4: they care. So he can't he can't take the business
- 2:52Speaker 4: aspect of them making moves or doing it the way
- 2:55Speaker 4: they want to run the ship, because they were doing
- 2:57Speaker 4: it way well before.
- 2:59Speaker 3: I even got there.
- 3:00Speaker 4: So the way I look at it is like I
- 3:01Speaker 4: was just extremely grateful that they, you know, won giving
- 3:04Speaker 4: me the opportunity to, you know, have those special moments
- 3:08Speaker 4: that we had. And two it was you know, you're
- 3:12Speaker 4: not owed anything in this game, so it's like, hey,
- 3:14Speaker 4: like take what you can get and keep moving forward.
- 3:17Speaker 6: So so fans know you were dfaid, that's what you
- 3:21Speaker 6: were talking about. You were dfaid and then traded during
- 3:24Speaker 6: that time of being designated for assignment, taking off the roster.
- 3:27Speaker 6: That's the part that you were like really surprised about
- 3:30Speaker 6: did they talk to you at all? Because the different
- 3:32Speaker 6: times that I was dfaid, they called me and they
- 3:35Speaker 6: were like, hey, there's a chance of two teams that
- 3:37Speaker 6: possibly would would like to claim you, but we have
- 3:40Speaker 6: an opportunity to pull you back and trade you. Do
- 3:43Speaker 6: you do you have an option between those teams? And
- 3:46Speaker 6: did they give that to you?
- 3:49Speaker 4: That was something more along the lines of the conversations
- 3:52Speaker 4: that between them and the agent, and you know, it
- 3:55Speaker 4: wasn't more they didn't give me any type of information,
- 3:59Speaker 4: you know, it was just more of like, hey, this
- 4:02Speaker 4: is what's what we're doing, this is what we're going with,
- 4:04Speaker 4: and uh, you know, we'll touch base in a couple
- 4:07Speaker 4: of days.
- 4:09Speaker 3: I think.
- 4:09Speaker 4: Uh, the you know, the feel was like, hey, you're
- 4:14Speaker 4: probably gonna get traded at some point, you know, and
- 4:18Speaker 4: then kind of gotten that notice through the agency, uh
- 4:24Speaker 4: saying that hey, there there's a lot of potential with
- 4:27Speaker 4: trades and different teams and and whatnot. So it was
- 4:31Speaker 4: kind of a weird process in the sense of just
- 4:33Speaker 4: sitting around kind of waiting to see where I was
- 4:35Speaker 4: gonna end up at. But like I said, like we've
- 4:38Speaker 4: been through it before, so it's kind of one of
- 4:40Speaker 4: those things where it's like I know what to expect
- 4:43Speaker 4: as far as the waiting time period and whatnot. But
- 4:47Speaker 4: you know, I just glad to have another uniform and
- 4:50Speaker 4: get another opportunity.
- 4:53Speaker 6: All right, I got one more Dodgers question. I'm sure
- 4:55Speaker 6: Alana has like a hundred, but how many times how
- 4:59Speaker 6: many times were you you crushed asking show hay questions
- 5:03Speaker 6: or how many people were like anything you get me
- 5:06Speaker 6: show show hayes autograph? Or was there somebody else on
- 5:09Speaker 6: the team that you got crushed about? Like Hey, what
- 5:12Speaker 6: what kind of shoes does Mookie wear?
- 5:17Speaker 4: It was more about like, hey, how how do they
- 5:19Speaker 4: run things? How are the guys? And most like that.
- 5:22Speaker 4: That's kind of what I got a lot. And you know,
- 5:26Speaker 4: as everybody knows it's been in that locker room or
- 5:29Speaker 4: gone through that locker room.
- 5:30Speaker 3: There are a bunch of great guys.
- 5:32Speaker 4: The culture there is unbelievable in the sense of like
- 5:34Speaker 4: they have each other's backs, they respect each other's work,
- 5:38Speaker 4: they care for each other. So there's a lot of
- 5:40Speaker 4: great things that they're doing over there. The culture that
- 5:42Speaker 4: they built there. Uh, you know, I was just fortunate
- 5:46Speaker 4: enough to be part of it and kind of learned
- 5:48Speaker 4: from them. But yeah, I've gotten some show hay uh
- 5:53Speaker 4: request for autographs and and uh some stuff as far
- 5:57Speaker 4: as asking like how is he what is he like
- 6:00Speaker 4: off the field?
- 6:01Speaker 3: And I just like, look, he works really hard.
- 6:04Speaker 4: You hardly see him because he's always in the cage
- 6:06Speaker 4: or you know, doing something. He's very particular about his work,
- 6:12Speaker 4: and I mean that speaks of arts with why he's
- 6:14Speaker 4: so great.
- 6:14Speaker 3: But also it's like you know watching.
- 6:17Speaker 4: Him like through the travels and stuff like that, you know,
- 6:21Speaker 4: just noticing that he just he loves reading you know,
- 6:24Speaker 4: comics or or you know, books on his iPad, you know,
- 6:30Speaker 4: just to you know, keep his mind away from you know, baseball.
- 6:33Speaker 4: And so I think that was really cool to kind
- 6:35Speaker 4: of get a little inside of that.
- 6:37Speaker 7: So but he's actually a really funny guy too. He's
- 6:40Speaker 7: got a selfie though, I got a selfie with him.
- 6:42Speaker 7: Did you know those and sell that thing? Bring down
- 6:48Speaker 7: the value though?
- 6:49Speaker 3: You Kershaw actually signed some cleats for me, so nice.
- 6:53Speaker 3: I was like, yeah, that was cool.
- 6:55Speaker 5: But he's still playing. He doesn't he's he's retired, but
- 6:57Speaker 5: he's still playing.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Yeah, but I think the value goes up.
- 7:00Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely, did he right?
- 7:03Speaker 1: Did he write to Anthony yeah, were you like, did
- 7:07Speaker 1: you like get a tower Oka, Hey, he's not looking scratching.
- 7:10Speaker 4: Off he uh no, they're they're in clothes in a
- 7:13Speaker 4: case at my house, sitting between the trophy and the
- 7:18Speaker 4: masks and all that other good stuff that I got there.
- 7:21Speaker 4: So yeah, it was it was cool for him to
- 7:24Speaker 4: do that. I was really really shocked, but then also
- 7:27Speaker 4: like really excited, but.
- 7:28Speaker 3: The inner child was like, oh my god, yeah, so
- 7:30Speaker 3: it was cool.
- 7:31Speaker 8: All right, let's turn the pages.
- 7:33Speaker 2: So you are entering a new season with the with
- 7:35Speaker 2: the new club, and I talked to Derek Shelton about
- 7:37Speaker 2: you specifically, and he says he loves your swing and miss.
- 7:40Speaker 2: What are you most excited about with with this new
- 7:43Speaker 2: team and this group of guys in the bullpen for
- 7:45Speaker 2: the Twins.
- 7:47Speaker 4: Well, it's just the opportunity to want to get to
- 7:49Speaker 4: know the guys, get to learn them, but then also
- 7:52Speaker 4: like you know, understanding, like hey, like you know what
- 7:55Speaker 4: I learned from the Dodgers, the blueprint that they've given me,
- 7:58Speaker 4: and just applying it, you know that, not really changing
- 8:02Speaker 4: too much, you know, having each other's backs, trying to
- 8:05Speaker 4: establish what I've learned from from La to to hear
- 8:10Speaker 4: you know, and it's not like a copy and paste
- 8:12Speaker 4: type of thing, right, You got different personalities, you got
- 8:15Speaker 4: guys that do different different things certain ways, and it's
- 8:18Speaker 4: just like you know, just understanding, like, hey, like I'm
- 8:22Speaker 4: always open to a conversation because you know the ups
- 8:24Speaker 4: and downs of baseball, right, you get those, right, But
- 8:26Speaker 4: then you also have the idea ideology of like having
- 8:30Speaker 4: each other's backs, and how do you do that? Well, yeah,
- 8:31Speaker 4: of course you did it on the field, but then
- 8:33Speaker 4: also in the locker room, off the field type things,
- 8:35Speaker 4: you know, getting guys to you know, break that eyes,
- 8:37Speaker 4: get them comfortable and and uh, you know, at least
- 8:41Speaker 4: that's like work for me, you know from my experience
- 8:43Speaker 4: and stuff like that. So it's more of like those
- 8:46Speaker 4: long like just showing to be a good teammate, but
- 8:49Speaker 4: then also like just taking care of work, right, and
- 8:51Speaker 4: then like looking at the big pictures like what are
- 8:53Speaker 4: we wanting to accomplish this season? What are the goals
- 8:56Speaker 4: for guys, and just kind of staying on that path
- 9:00Speaker 4: then get away from writing that what they call the roller.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Coaster ups and downs of the season.
- 9:05Speaker 4: So it's like, you know, if we can try and
- 9:07Speaker 4: stay there, I think we're gonna be pretty good.
- 9:10Speaker 5: Are you like the veteran guy in this bullpen?
- 9:13Speaker 3: No?
- 9:13Speaker 1: No, do they come to you do your boat when
- 9:16Speaker 1: you're sitting down in the bullpen. Do guys come up
- 9:18Speaker 1: to you and say you want serious ones that like
- 9:20Speaker 1: pitching in the playoffs?
- 9:22Speaker 3: Yeah? Yeah?
- 9:23Speaker 5: Do they ask questions like that?
- 9:24Speaker 1: Because this is a relatively youngish team for the Twins, Right, So.
- 9:30Speaker 5: You're kind of I mean, you're now you are an
- 9:33Speaker 5: older state.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Even though you're kind of giving me the you're crazy,
- 9:37Speaker 1: You've just been through a lot compared to a lot
- 9:39Speaker 1: of these other guys that are here.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:41Speaker 4: Yeah, And you know, I just try to relate through
- 9:45Speaker 4: my experiences, right, And that's the best way I.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Could potentially do that.
- 9:48Speaker 4: But yeah, I get a lot of questions, you know,
- 9:50Speaker 4: how was it?
- 9:51Speaker 3: What was the atmosphere?
- 9:52Speaker 4: Like, you know, and you know so forth, like you know,
- 9:55Speaker 4: all the generic questions that come with it.
- 9:57Speaker 1: And what's the worst question It's the worst question I
- 10:01Speaker 1: could ask? Uh, I don't know, or maybe the question
- 10:09Speaker 1: you like the least.
- 10:12Speaker 4: I mean, I invite all questions, really, you know, I
- 10:14Speaker 4: don't I don't really.
- 10:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm gonna I try to be very understanding.
- 10:19Speaker 4: Okay, people are different, you know, they got their own
- 10:21Speaker 4: cues and stuff.
- 10:22Speaker 3: But yeah, so I'm sure you have one.
- 10:27Speaker 5: Right now, No, I don't.
- 10:28Speaker 1: I just I want to know because I know I've
- 10:30Speaker 1: never heard anyone ask what because people ask me.
- 10:33Speaker 5: What's your favorite field you played at? Who was the
- 10:35Speaker 5: toughest picture you had to face?
- 10:38Speaker 3: Right?
- 10:38Speaker 5: This and that? What's it like winning a world series? Right,
- 10:41Speaker 5: You're like, okay, ask me something different.
- 10:44Speaker 4: Yeah, well I haven't gotten those different questions yet, so
- 10:47Speaker 4: it's very generic.
- 10:49Speaker 5: That's why you're here. We're asking you different questions.
- 10:52Speaker 3: But what was the question again?
- 10:54Speaker 5: I'm sorry, No, you're good.
- 10:59Speaker 2: I'll be about a Pokemon store in Japan. Why what
- 11:03Speaker 2: is your what is your fascination with Pokemon?
- 11:06Speaker 5: Yeah, but you're a Pokemon guy.
- 11:07Speaker 3: I'm a Pokemon guy.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Yeah, so we we. I once did. I once pulled
- 11:12Speaker 1: Arena Club and I went on Pokemon. I was like, ah,
- 11:15Speaker 1: I spend some money on this and I got some
- 11:17Speaker 1: car and I don't even know what it was, and
- 11:19Speaker 1: on there they'll they'll buy it back from you instantly.
- 11:21Speaker 9: You know.
- 11:22Speaker 5: It was like some gold something. I don't know what.
- 11:24Speaker 1: I'm like, Well, so right away, yeah, but you would
- 11:28Speaker 1: have been you would have loved that, right, Yeah.
- 11:30Speaker 3: I mean, I like, it's a childhood thing of mine.
- 11:33Speaker 4: You know, It's something that me and my brothers grew
- 11:35Speaker 4: up on and it's something that we really enjoyed, right,
- 11:41Speaker 4: And so it just I kind of never really got
- 11:44Speaker 4: away from me, right, and it was more of like
- 11:46Speaker 4: what kind of kept me in It was like the
- 11:48Speaker 4: game book, color games and you know, stuff like that,
- 11:51Speaker 4: you know, just passing the time and whatnot. And when
- 11:55Speaker 4: I went to it was always one of my bucket
- 11:59Speaker 4: It was on my bucket list to go to Japan,
- 12:00Speaker 4: right and then go, you.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Know, see that side of the world and experience it.
- 12:05Speaker 4: And then I had, you know, obviously the opportunity to
- 12:07Speaker 4: go and do that, so I wanted to take full
- 12:10Speaker 4: advatage of it. And I knew that they had a
- 12:12Speaker 4: really you know, there was a Pinnacle Pokemon there, so
- 12:15Speaker 4: as far as like the whole uh you know, HQ
- 12:19Speaker 4: or headquarters what.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Everyone call it.
- 12:21Speaker 4: But so we ended up setting it up and that
- 12:25Speaker 4: was like I felt like a little kid in there,
- 12:28Speaker 4: and I was like, you know, and I enjoyed the
- 12:31Speaker 4: heck out of it. My son did too, and we
- 12:33Speaker 4: had a great time and it was great, and I
- 12:36Speaker 4: think the coolest thing was, I know, the Pokemon Cafe.
- 12:40Speaker 4: I heard there was like a rumor or something where
- 12:42Speaker 4: it's like there's a waiting list. It's like almost like
- 12:43Speaker 4: three to six month waiting lists, and like they were like, no, no,
- 12:46Speaker 4: you go in and get it, you know, experience it
- 12:49Speaker 4: and you know, so that was pretty cool.
- 12:51Speaker 3: But yeah, the whole experience of it all.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Was really really nice and inviting and it was everything
- 12:56Speaker 4: that I would think it would be and so it
- 12:59Speaker 4: was really fulfilled for me.
- 13:00Speaker 5: So real quick, favorite tattoo, My favorite tattoo, I mean
- 13:04Speaker 5: you have you have a lot to choose from. Uh yeah,
- 13:09Speaker 5: there's a lot of them.
- 13:10Speaker 4: I you know, the one on my back is pretty cool,
- 13:13Speaker 4: but then this one means the most. It's like, you know,
- 13:15Speaker 4: watching my son. It's a nightball with the little guy
- 13:18Speaker 4: in there, Okay, so it's like watching him grow up
- 13:20Speaker 4: and stuff like that. And then also the five five
- 13:23Speaker 4: five was the time he was born. So I mean,
- 13:25Speaker 4: those are really cool little tattoos that I like, But like, yeah,
- 13:29Speaker 4: I would say the favorite one would probably be between
- 13:31Speaker 4: this one and the five five five awesome.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, Anthony, We appreciate it very much. Thanks
- 13:37Speaker 2: for taking the time. Best of luck in Minnesota. We
- 13:39Speaker 2: always appreciate it when players come on and I know
- 13:42Speaker 2: you're busy, so thanks so much, my friend.
- 13:44Speaker 3: Thank you so much. Thanks for having me.
- 13:46Speaker 7: It's good seeing you guys again here with Ryan Jeffers,
- 13:48Speaker 7: who now Twins Catcher, who's now like the oldest eldest
- 13:52Speaker 7: statesman in.
- 13:52Speaker 10: The Twins locker room at this point, are you.
- 13:55Speaker 5: Bucks on here?
- 13:56Speaker 8: Yeah, it's kind of crazy. I mean after the trade out,
- 13:59Speaker 8: I'm actually we're getting rid of guys left and right,
- 14:02Speaker 8: and it's Pablo, bask Buck.
- 14:04Speaker 1: And and me, and then they're they're gone, and then
- 14:08Speaker 1: it's me and Buck.
- 14:09Speaker 9: Yeah, it's wild.
- 14:10Speaker 10: So that means you have to buy everyone dinner every.
- 14:12Speaker 9: Night, right, the team dinners will be on me.
- 14:16Speaker 8: So buckets back gets back his face.
- 14:20Speaker 9: He's like, maybe just breakfast part.
- 14:24Speaker 8: Of those yet, I mean the Catcher's dinners. You know,
- 14:26Speaker 8: me and Vick we did something cool there, but you know,
- 14:29Speaker 8: the team dinner is always you know, when Carlos is around,
- 14:31Speaker 8: he's he usually picks us up.
- 14:33Speaker 10: Okay, well, when you said you and Vic gets something
- 14:36Speaker 10: cool for the Catchers, catchers on here.
- 14:38Speaker 8: So tell us, yeah, no, we went out to uh
- 14:41Speaker 8: I went online found a nice Korean barbecue spot and
- 14:45Speaker 8: then rolled up and it was in a strip mall
- 14:47Speaker 8: next to an office depot. I was really worried. I
- 14:51Speaker 8: was really worried about I was really worried to where
- 14:53Speaker 8: we were going into. Ended up being a really good dinner.
- 14:55Speaker 11: It's great when you go to the Korean barbecue people
- 14:57Speaker 11: that don't know you have to cook your Yeah, yeah,
- 14:59Speaker 11: so you make the rookies cook your food.
- 15:01Speaker 5: On the thing.
- 15:02Speaker 9: We were fully planning on it, fully planning on it.
- 15:06Speaker 8: They ended up the server or whatever, the waitress and
- 15:09Speaker 8: cooking all of this for us. He tipped her action right, yeah,
- 15:12Speaker 8: oh yeah, yes, oh yeah, oh yeah.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Grian, good to be with you. Alana Rizzo here. Wanted
- 15:20Speaker 2: to ask you the last three seasons, you guys have
- 15:22Speaker 2: kind of been sharing the load behind the plate. This year,
- 15:25Speaker 2: Derek Sheldon said, you're ce one. How do you go
- 15:27Speaker 2: into the season with that mindset, know when you're getting
- 15:29Speaker 2: the bulk of the time behind the dish.
- 15:32Speaker 8: Yeah, you know, it's something I've always I've always wanted,
- 15:34Speaker 8: you know, I've I've felt like I at times I've
- 15:36Speaker 8: I've worked myself and deserved the right to catch more.
- 15:42Speaker 8: I'm excited to finally get that opportunity. You know, it's
- 15:45Speaker 8: every off season I prepare myself to catch one hundred
- 15:47Speaker 8: and twenty whatever whatever my name is called. But at
- 15:53Speaker 8: the same time, you know, I'm not in control of
- 15:55Speaker 8: the lineup. So the last couple of years I was,
- 15:57Speaker 8: I was sharing the load and in every other day.
- 16:01Speaker 8: But I'm excited to take that opportunity and you know,
- 16:03Speaker 8: help the pitching staff on a daily basis and try
- 16:06Speaker 8: and help us win some games.
- 16:09Speaker 5: When you say helped the pitching staff with Pablo going
- 16:12Speaker 5: down obviously for the year.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Which sucks.
- 16:14Speaker 11: Yeah, for get pitching wise, He's just a good dude
- 16:16Speaker 11: to be around and have around. And then you see
- 16:19Speaker 11: Joe Joe with his back and he has to miss
- 16:21Speaker 11: up starts. You and to get to your team, say,
- 16:23Speaker 11: like you plan, how do.
- 16:25Speaker 1: You get to know most of the young guys, because
- 16:26Speaker 1: after those two if you look at the names in
- 16:29Speaker 1: your rotation.
- 16:29Speaker 5: And even in your bullpen and you're like, whoa wait.
- 16:31Speaker 11: A second, these aren't standard names for most people outside
- 16:34Speaker 11: of this clubhouse.
- 16:35Speaker 8: Yeah, as you know, it's like our job Number one
- 16:38Speaker 8: is to build the relationships with the pictures as quickly
- 16:40Speaker 8: as we can and as and as deep as you can.
- 16:43Speaker 8: You know, you're trying and get to know them off
- 16:44Speaker 8: the field. You're trying to get to know them as
- 16:45Speaker 8: people know their families. So that way when you have
- 16:48Speaker 8: conversations and you know, the trust level is there, you know,
- 16:52Speaker 8: I think that's what it comes down to, is them
- 16:54Speaker 8: trusting me that I have their best interests in mind.
- 16:57Speaker 8: And we've got some really talented arms behind the the names,
- 17:00Speaker 8: you know, the Pablo, the Joe, the Bailey. We have
- 17:03Speaker 8: some really talented arts and Mick and Taj and guys
- 17:06Speaker 8: that can have really exciting futures, and I think we're
- 17:10Speaker 8: really excited to see what they'll do for us.
- 17:13Speaker 6: What are the pitching coaches tell you that you have
- 17:15Speaker 6: to do for those guys? Is there something individually like
- 17:20Speaker 6: not not the stars, not not not the best pitchers,
- 17:23Speaker 6: but the guys that are really trying to get their
- 17:25Speaker 6: feet under them, or even like a guy like Tosh
- 17:28Speaker 6: who's like, Wow, what an amazing potential, but we just
- 17:32Speaker 6: haven't quite tapped it on the rag.
- 17:36Speaker 8: Yeah, for the young guys, you know, I think it's
- 17:38Speaker 8: it's how quickly can I make them comfortable? How quickly
- 17:41Speaker 8: can I get them accilated not only to the big
- 17:44Speaker 8: league life, but but our clubhouse. You know, how we
- 17:46Speaker 8: talk pitching, how we talk scouting reports and get them
- 17:51Speaker 8: to go out there and focus on executing their pitch.
- 17:54Speaker 8: You know, I'll take the brunt of the game plan,
- 17:56Speaker 8: I'll take the brunt of the calling the game.
- 17:57Speaker 11: You know.
- 17:58Speaker 8: That is, I'll take as much off of their shoulders
- 17:59Speaker 8: as I can. But they have to go out there
- 18:03Speaker 8: and execute, and there's only so much I can do
- 18:05Speaker 8: to help them there. The TAJ, you know, Taj, you
- 18:09Speaker 8: pump that guy up every day because he is one
- 18:11Speaker 8: of the best, just pure stuff guys in the game.
- 18:13Speaker 8: And he's gone out there and you know, I think
- 18:15Speaker 8: he punched you six or seven yesterday in five innings
- 18:18Speaker 8: and just throw a touch in ninety nine.
- 18:20Speaker 9: You know, just unbelievable stuff.
- 18:21Speaker 8: And he can be one of the best pitchers in baseball,
- 18:25Speaker 8: no doubt in my mind, you know, And I feel
- 18:27Speaker 8: like he's on a good track to putting it all
- 18:29Speaker 8: together this year. So what that?
- 18:31Speaker 10: Sorry, Sorry, Alana.
- 18:32Speaker 6: I wanted to follow with that because when Aj was
- 18:36Speaker 6: that guy, when AJ, there's he's he said tons of
- 18:39Speaker 6: stories where where you handle rookies and you're like, dude,
- 18:43Speaker 6: just listen to what I have to say. Is that
- 18:45Speaker 6: changed because you're now what we just talked about it
- 18:47Speaker 6: the veteran and if you have younger, less experience, not
- 18:50Speaker 6: necessarily rookies, but less experienced guys. Are you that jerk
- 18:54Speaker 6: catcher that's like, bro, just don't shake me off. If
- 18:57Speaker 6: you give up a hit, you know it's showing you
- 19:00Speaker 6: or are you Is it more like kid gloves now?
- 19:04Speaker 8: Yeah, No, I would say it's more of the latter,
- 19:06Speaker 8: not necessarily because you have.
- 19:08Speaker 9: To treat them differently.
- 19:08Speaker 8: It's just because when you have to rely on them
- 19:12Speaker 8: to make a start every five days, you know you
- 19:14Speaker 8: want to bring the best out of them as you can.
- 19:17Speaker 9: So if there's some guys forget that so well.
- 19:24Speaker 8: I think it comes into like, hey, if there if
- 19:26Speaker 8: I'm getting shaken off a lot, or or we're getting
- 19:30Speaker 8: pitches in situations that I don't want to have those,
- 19:33Speaker 8: uh those thrown.
- 19:34Speaker 9: You know, that's conversations that we have in the dugout
- 19:37Speaker 9: after the inning. You know, something goes south like hey,
- 19:39Speaker 9: this is what what I was thinking?
- 19:41Speaker 8: This is where I think your thought process was flawed
- 19:47Speaker 8: in in the hopes that those young guys will learn.
- 19:49Speaker 8: And then the more the trust that I can build,
- 19:52Speaker 8: Like I keep going back to trust, you know, the
- 19:53Speaker 8: more that they can trust me that I am there
- 19:56Speaker 8: for them, the more hopefully they will just turn over
- 19:58Speaker 8: the reins to me and let me do thing behind
- 20:00Speaker 8: the plate.
- 20:01Speaker 2: Ryan, when you walked into the clubhouse last trade season
- 20:04Speaker 2: the cherry deadline, you kind of walk around, You're like,
- 20:06Speaker 2: where the heck is everybody? But thankfully Joe Ryan is
- 20:10Speaker 2: still there with you guys. I know he had been
- 20:12Speaker 2: in so many different trade talks. I mean, how key
- 20:14Speaker 2: is it for you guys to have success with that
- 20:17Speaker 2: guy kind of leading the charge.
- 20:19Speaker 8: Yeah, you know, he's been a staple in this organization
- 20:21Speaker 8: since I think twenty one when we traded him.
- 20:25Speaker 9: Traded for him. He really he commands a different presence
- 20:30Speaker 9: on the mound. You know, he's such a unique individual.
- 20:33Speaker 8: He's you know, they coined the Joe Ryan experience, and
- 20:36Speaker 8: that's a real thing.
- 20:37Speaker 5: You know.
- 20:38Speaker 8: You he's a spectacle when he's on the mountain, not
- 20:41Speaker 8: just what he's doing with the baseball, but you know,
- 20:43Speaker 8: everything he does from his swimmer stuff to the emotions
- 20:46Speaker 8: he communicates with the umpires in a different way. I
- 20:51Speaker 8: think he's starting to, kind of, like me, step into
- 20:53Speaker 8: a bigger role of leadership. And some of the young
- 20:56Speaker 8: guys are looking at him for how he works, how
- 20:58Speaker 8: he talks pitching, how he communicates, and we're gonna need
- 21:01Speaker 8: him to step up a little bit more this year
- 21:03Speaker 8: with Pablo being out.
- 21:05Speaker 5: He was a great stranger things.
- 21:06Speaker 8: So yeah, no, they did one of those like celebrity
- 21:10Speaker 8: lookalike things one year one day and it was him
- 21:12Speaker 8: and Bill Billy is his name, Billy Billy the mall
- 21:15Speaker 8: when you know he gets yeah, oh yeah, yeah, it
- 21:20Speaker 8: was really special.
- 21:22Speaker 11: We had a yesterday and we were joking about the
- 21:25Speaker 11: pitch cop how often do you hit the wrong button?
- 21:27Speaker 11: Because he said he hits the wrong button two to
- 21:29Speaker 11: three times a game.
- 21:34Speaker 8: Pretty pretty rare. Yeah, you know it's I've got mine now,
- 21:37Speaker 8: I do say. I think mine is very simple, very
- 21:39Speaker 8: easy to use. Uh Vic brought one in that I
- 21:42Speaker 8: guess he's used in the past that is just as
- 21:46Speaker 8: confusing to me as it gets.
- 21:47Speaker 9: So I don't know, maybe mine's a little more simple
- 21:49Speaker 9: than others.
- 21:50Speaker 11: At least did like sometimes he'll hit throw over and
- 21:53Speaker 11: there's no one on base or like back pick.
- 21:55Speaker 8: Some guys sometimes you have to some guys, you there's
- 21:58Speaker 8: different ways you can organiz is it. Sometimes you have
- 22:00Speaker 8: to press like two buttons every time you press a button,
- 22:03Speaker 8: like to call something. Mine is just like simple like
- 22:05Speaker 8: one presses, I can do more, I can hold.
- 22:08Speaker 10: Be careful because people are gonna be watching your.
- 22:10Speaker 9: They don't know how, they don't know how it's organized
- 22:11Speaker 9: down there on my knee.
- 22:12Speaker 10: You know, watching with pain flexes in your fore.
- 22:15Speaker 8: It wouldn't surprise me if there's some camera on our
- 22:18Speaker 8: on our pitch comet sometime. Yeah, but no, you know
- 22:20Speaker 8: there's always a little messoups. But there's always a cancel
- 22:23Speaker 8: button on there, or there's just an old.
- 22:25Speaker 9: Yeah yeah wait wait wait, I know.
- 22:28Speaker 8: Usually it's usually it's not the wrong pitch, it's usually
- 22:31Speaker 8: what what what at least says like you'll you're searching
- 22:35Speaker 8: for a slide step or something in your you end
- 22:38Speaker 8: up picking pressing up a back pick button or something
- 22:40Speaker 8: something fortunate that.
- 22:42Speaker 10: Does you have like no, no, I'm stupid, don't don't
- 22:44Speaker 10: don't do.
- 22:45Speaker 9: That, that's the old wave your hands.
- 22:46Speaker 8: No, no, no, wait, wait, wait, and press press the
- 22:49Speaker 8: other one about six times, trying to no, no, no, this one,
- 22:50Speaker 8: this one, this one, this thing, yeah, yeah, this one.
- 22:53Speaker 6: How about the new role, Well, it's a new role.
- 22:55Speaker 6: But they said they're going to enforce the fact that
- 22:58Speaker 6: third and first base coaches have to stay in their
- 23:00Speaker 6: box during at bats. Does that alleviate some you know,
- 23:05Speaker 6: some looking around for you, making sure they're not moving
- 23:08Speaker 6: as you call pitch.
- 23:10Speaker 8: You know, I'm almost almost torn and meaning the other
- 23:13Speaker 8: way of like they when they would leave their box,
- 23:15Speaker 8: they're almost always looking at the pitcher. You know, maybe
- 23:17Speaker 8: now they not able to do that as much, and
- 23:19Speaker 8: they're focusing on me a little bit more, whether that's
- 23:23Speaker 8: trying to pick my setups versus picking the pitcher's grips
- 23:26Speaker 8: or whatnot. So I'm not sure how it's gonna affect
- 23:30Speaker 8: them yet, I don't. I'm not sure how tightly it's
- 23:32Speaker 8: really going to enforce. I mean, two years ago they
- 23:33Speaker 8: said they were going to enforce the obstruction rule quite crazy,
- 23:37Speaker 8: and then no one ever calls it, so who knows.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Rian, How do you feel about the ABS system being
- 23:44Speaker 2: implemented this year? Have you had to do much of
- 23:46Speaker 2: that in spring and kind of what's your take on
- 23:48Speaker 2: automated balls and strikes?
- 23:50Speaker 8: Yeah, I like it a lot. So far, I've been
- 23:53Speaker 8: a big fan of it. I've been pretty good at it.
- 23:56Speaker 8: There's a pretty good they've got some stats. I've been
- 24:00Speaker 8: so far. I've been pretty solid at challenging the right calls.
- 24:03Speaker 8: You know, I think there's a lot that you know,
- 24:06Speaker 8: it takes away a framing stat from US catchers, but
- 24:09Speaker 8: it also I think it can add in a value
- 24:13Speaker 8: that we're not really sure of. You know that the
- 24:15Speaker 8: challenge and challenging the right pitches the right times, winning
- 24:17Speaker 8: those challenges with with whether it's runners on base, you know,
- 24:21Speaker 8: that can add run value to what I do behind
- 24:24Speaker 8: the plate, just as much as framing some pitches can.
- 24:27Speaker 9: So I'm excited for it.
- 24:28Speaker 8: I think it'll eliminate the big misses from the umpires
- 24:33Speaker 8: and we'll see how it goes.
- 24:34Speaker 5: Hey, you run out of challenges and then they just
- 24:36Speaker 5: start calling.
- 24:36Speaker 9: So the hitters just use all the challenges and then
- 24:38Speaker 9: I don't have any left.
- 24:39Speaker 5: Yeah, then they just can call anything. So it's fine.
- 24:42Speaker 8: Yeah, I think that's something that we're like talked about. Hey,
- 24:45Speaker 8: we're going to follow like, Hey, how does how do
- 24:47Speaker 8: umpires react once teams are out of challenges?
- 24:49Speaker 9: Do they strength his own? Like? How are they going
- 24:52Speaker 9: to Are they going to change at all? You know?
- 24:53Speaker 8: I think in the minors they didn't see a lot
- 24:55Speaker 8: of that, but you never know what the big leg
- 24:57Speaker 8: umpires that. Yeah, some of the old guys that do
- 24:59Speaker 8: they revert back to where they were the years past.
- 25:03Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 25:04Speaker 11: Last question before you let you go, La, Troy Hawkins
- 25:07Speaker 11: is on your coaching step.
- 25:08Speaker 5: Does he do anything? Because I can't believe that he
- 25:10Speaker 5: does any.
- 25:13Speaker 9: I think it's a really good voice for us to have.
- 25:15Speaker 5: You know.
- 25:17Speaker 9: What, I don't talk to the bullpen coach that much.
- 25:19Speaker 10: The best thing you've ever said, don't talk to him
- 25:21Speaker 10: all year. Tell them that I said, you don't.
- 25:23Speaker 2: Talk to them.
- 25:24Speaker 8: We'll probably have a lot more conversations in season than
- 25:26Speaker 8: we do right now. I know from talking to the
- 25:31Speaker 8: bullpen guys, they're really excited about having him down there.
- 25:33Speaker 8: You know, it's not often you can have a twenty
- 25:34Speaker 8: plus year vet in your bullpen. Talking to those guys.
- 25:38Speaker 8: It's not even the it's not the scouting reports, it's
- 25:40Speaker 8: not the how do you it's just how do you
- 25:43Speaker 8: handle yourself. How do you approach the game in general?
- 25:46Speaker 8: You know, it's the big picture stuff that he brings
- 25:48Speaker 8: that you just can't get from anywhere else.
- 25:50Speaker 1: Really, Ryan, thank you for joining us from one Florida
- 25:54Speaker 1: State League All Star here and for Myers to another.
- 25:57Speaker 5: Thanks for joining.
- 25:58Speaker 9: Absolutely, thank you.
