- 0:05SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Heart Room Podcast.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Chris Ray.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Here in the Heart Room, we believe that healing begins in the heart, and that even the places we've learned to hide are places Jesus longs to meet us.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Today I'm especially excited because I'm welcoming my very first guest.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: We're going to be talking about something that touches the lives of so many women, the longing to be loved, accepted, and chosen, and how the wounds of our earliest relationships quietly shape what we come to believe about ourselves.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: But our stories don't have to end where the pain began.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: My guest today is Michelle Briggs, author of Searching for a Father's Love.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: She's a speaker, transformation coach, and the founder of Journey to Heal LLC.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Drawing on her journey through abandonment, loss, forgiveness, and rediscovery, Michelle encourages women toward healing, identity, and purpose in the healing love of God.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: So wherever you are today, I invite you to settle in, open your heart, and join us for this conversation.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Michelle, welcome to the Heart Room.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: I'm so glad you're here.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: I love how God put us together.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Our stories are different, but they intersect in so many ways.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Our brokenness and our search for love and meaning and the way Jesus was there all along and brought us to him.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: He's the one that loves us with an everlasting love and brought us here to share our stories here today.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: And I want to start off by asking what led you to write Searching for a Father's Love?
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: What made you realize this story was something you needed to tell?
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: Thank you for having me, Kristen.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: So yes, Searching for a Father's Love is a book that I wrote.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: It's a memoir.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: And I wrote it because it was a process of healing for me.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: So I use that book as my healing journey, telling my story, um, what happened to me, how it made me feel.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: And then the end I talk about overcoming um that by forgiving and showing grace.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: Um, so yes, it was just a thing of healing for me, getting my story out of me, putting it in the book just so I can help others, other women.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: I want to be able to share this healing journey with others.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: So when you look back at the little girl you once were, what did she come to believe about herself because of the love she was longing for?
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: Well, that little girl believed that she was abandoned, unloved, unseen, and felt like she wasn't good enough.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: Um, she always wanted somebody to stay, she wanted somebody to love her through whatever, you know, and not having that, it made that little girl look for love in all the wrong places as growing up as an adult.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: So if you see um behind me is my book cover.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: Let me see if I can move over so you can see a little bit.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: And so that's the little girl that represents me.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: And then in the back, you see a silhouette of a lady, older lady on the porch in a rocking chair.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: Now that represents me as well, because it no longer was just a physical thing of longing, a little girl waiting for her father's love or searching for it.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: But as an adult woman, I still searched for that father's love.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: Um, I still wanted that.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: It wasn't so much more physical love, but it was in a mental.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: It was a thing that I always wanted that love there.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: I wanted to be able to be loved.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: And like I said, I looked for it in all the wrong places.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: But then one day, one day, one day, God came along and he showed me that the love that I needed was always inside of me.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: It was his love that he always had for me, that his love never changes, never fails, it never gives up on us.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: And so that just that just made me, you know, um, tell my story from a place of hey, this is where I once was, but this is where I am today.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Did you want to tell a little bit about your story and and what happened?
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: And sure.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: So um, as a little girl, my mom and dad divorced.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: My dad was never really there.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: Um, and I moved around a lot with my mom because of her job.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: And um, my mom and dad remarried after 16 years.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: Um, and then after being remarried, I felt like my father was more of a father-grandfather to my children.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: Like my children got what they needed from him more than what I did.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: And I was sort of jealous of my children because I was like, that's what I wanted as a child.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: That's what I wanted, you know.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: I wanted to laugh with my dad.
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: I wanted to sit on his lap.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: I wanted to have those times with him, showing me things that uh and you know, I used to feel like if I had my dad, maybe I wouldn't have selected the man that I was with.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: You know, maybe I would have did something differently if my dad was present and there.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: Um, but long story short, it ended up my dad and mom got remarried.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: My dad was a pastor, and currently my dad is in prison.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: Um, and that was another side that I had to heal from um because I felt like he neglected the opportunity to build a relationship with me and you know, to do the things that he was accused of doing.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: Um, that just really was like a hard place for me as well.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: And so um I married a man, we were married for 20 years.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: Um, I had four children with him.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: He was a pastor as well, and um we ended up getting divorced.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: He divorced me after 20 years of marriage, and I had my youngest daughter at home.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: She was 16.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, I had to get her out of high school, get her, you know, ready for college.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: She decided she wanted to go to Virginia where he was to go to college.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: I took her out there.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: And when I came back home, I came back home to an empty house.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: And I think that's the thing that was my wake-up call for me.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: That was the thing that got me to a place where, okay, Michelle, who are you?
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: What do you want?
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: You know, what do you want to do with your life?
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: At that particular time, I cannot answer those questions because I have been so consumed with being the pastor's wife and being my children's mother and being a daughter and being an employee that I did not know my own identity.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: And I think identity is very important.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: And what has forgiveness meant in your journey?
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: And what would you want listeners to understand about it?
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: Forgiveness to me is liberating yourself.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: A lot of times we think that when we're unforgiving or we're forgiving for the other person, it's not for the other person, it's for you.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: Um, we carry a burden when we don't forgive, we carry a burden that's unnecessary that we need to carry.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: We don't need to carry that burden.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: Um, Jesus went to the cross for our forgiveness.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: And one scripture that stuck out to me the most when he said, When you stand praying, forgive, that your heavenly father may forgive you.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: And I was like, you know what?
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: I want to be forgiven because there's things that I did I haven't done correctly.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: There's things I need to be forgiven for.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: And in order for me to um be forgiven, I have to forgive others.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: But that wasn't just that scripture that was there, but it was the thought of when I finally gave up and forgave, totally forgave, it was a place of liberation, it was a place of freedom, a place of like a new life, like a new life that's breathed into me.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: And and I agree with that because our identity is tied into that so much, you know.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Um when we have tried to find love, uh, when we are searching everything and doubting ourselves, and you know, just continuing to try harder to do more, to strive, you know, searching for love and the striving for needing love and not having that identity.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Uh, it it's you know, can you speak on that and and how you've where you see yourself from where you were to where you are now?
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: Oh, I have come such a long way.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: Um, I am so much more confident in myself.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: I am so much more um my self-esteem is a lot better.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: Um, I have even along the way, along the journey, I've slipped off.
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: You know, I've gotten into relationships with men that I thought really truly loved me, only to find out, you know, that wasn't true.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: Um I always say you never know how healed you are until you're tested, right?
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: We we can say we're healed all day long.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: You I'm healed, I'm healed, I'm healed.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: But until you put to the test, um until that thing that you need to be healed from has been tested, you don't understand how how healed you are.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: Um, you can be healed, you know, to a certain degree, but you never understand how healed you are.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: And I didn't know how he how healed I was until I got into another relationship.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: And that showed me that I really wasn't healed.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: Um, it showed me that I allowed something to come into my life that I didn't do my research, I didn't do my due diligence and and and really not really, but I was had I still had that longing for the love.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: And so I accepted something and settled for someone who was not even up to the caliber of even being a real Christian.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna be honest, um, only to later to find out he was on crack.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: And you know, it was like a thing for me, it's like a wake-up call again.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: Like, okay, you're still not totally healed.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: You still have some things going on inside of you that you really need to deal with.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: And but the amazing thing is when you look back on it, I've been there, you know, and you feel you've come so far, and then you're back and you're like, wait a minute, I thought that I already went through this before.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: I thought I already why am I here?
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: And you know, for me, that would put me right in the pit of self-doubt, of you know, just so much confusion, and you know that's the enemy, and you know, and during that time, did you have Christ in your life?
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: Uh, was it was that part of the did he seem distant?
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: You know, was he did you feel him present there with you through those times?
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: There were times, and I'm gonna be perfectly honest, there were times where I felt as though I had backslid and like I had gotten to a place of, you know, after being hurt in church, you know, and I had I one I remember one day just praying and talking to God, and I'm like, I'm so tired of you know, the church, and he God spoke to me so clearly and said, What did I do to you?
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, Well, Lord, you didn't do anything, but them people that say they love you, and those people that you know, um, they're the ones they're not representing you well.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: So I had to really do an evaluation.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: My relationship with God, I feel like um, I always felt like he had his hand on me.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: I always felt like he, you know, he never left me.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: The word is really true that he'll never leave you and never forsake you.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: But sin can cause a distance between you guys, and so sin calls a distance between myself and God, but I always felt him calling me back, I always felt him you know nudging on me and making sure because the Bible says that he's married to the backslider, God don't divorce us.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: Um, so he's married to us.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: So when we wake up and come to ourselves, such as the product of Son in that pin, when we come to ourselves, we can go back home and he's there waiting for us for us with open arms.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: That's beautiful, and it's it's so scriptural and it's so Jesus, you know, and he picks us up when we're at our worst, and he just loves us.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: Yes, I love his unconditional love.
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: I am so I always say I thank God that he's not like man or like people, because people have this, you they either with you, they're not with you.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: Some they they lukewarm with you or whatever, but God stays the same, he doesn't change, he's the same yesterday, today, and forevermore.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: So he does not change, and that's what I love about him that you can depend on him.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: He's consistent, he is who he is, and he will be who he's gonna be.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: And I I just had a thought too that when um describe uh what it was like for you to get to the point where you are now, where you wrote the book, and you know what was happening right before that?
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: Did you feel that he had done such a deep work in you and you just knew that you knew, you know, what led up to that?
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: Well, I knew that I've been saying for years I want to write a book.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: Maybe like probably before I even got divorced.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: I always say I want to write a book, but I did not know when that opportunity was gonna come or when I was gonna actually do it.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: Um, my godmother told me many, many years ago uh that she said, Why are you not writing your book?
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: She said, That's the thing that God's gonna use for you.
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: Um, and she said, You hold it so many people's deliverance inside of you.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: And I didn't really understand it because at that particular time I felt as though I'm not healed enough to release this story.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: So I felt like I needed to do some more healing before I released the story.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: Um, one day I was coming home from work and I pulled in my driveway, and the title of the book just dropped in my spirit.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: I came inside and I started researching the title to see if there's any other titles the same and all of that.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: And it wasn't any.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: So I was like, this gotta be God, you know, this gotta be.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: And so I began to compile the book and get it together.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: I didn't know how to write a book, I didn't even know what I was doing.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: So I called the publisher.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: I got a publisher.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: I was like, look, I need to get this book out.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: The book came out in February, and this just to see how fast God will move things, God would move things so quickly.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: I've been only doing this like as a business with the speaking and the events.
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: Um, it's just been six months.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: I'm not like been in here for years and doing this for years, and six months things have just moved so swiftly that it's like blowing my mind.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: It's like, and that's how God does.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: Sometimes we always say we're waiting on God, but a lot of times he's waiting on us, he's waiting on you to do, he has a plan for us already, right?
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: According to Jeremiah 29, 11, he said, I know the thoughts that I have towards you.
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: He said, They're good and not of evil, and to give you an expected end.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: So he already knows our beginning from our ending.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: So the thing is, he's waiting on us to say, okay, I'll do it.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: And so when I yielded my yes to him and told him, Yes, I'll do it, and I'd start doing it.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: This has been going like so fast.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: It's like, wow, before I can get one thing done, the next thing is I mean, it's just like popping.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: And I've since released two more uh book and a coloring book.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: So it's like I'm just really just things are just flowing, and I have another book inside of me that I need to release.
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: Amen.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: Do you want to talk about what that is about or uh the books that's currently that's out.
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: Well, the one that's currently is out is um um loving me while becoming, navigating the space of who we are now to who we're becoming.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: Um it's talking about transitional points.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: A lot of times we as women we lose ourselves in the transitions.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: Um we don't we tend to over have to over-explain ourselves.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: We feel like we have to we can't say no to situations, that we have to always be available to people.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: And so we got to navigate that space of who we are and who we're trying to become.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: And then my coloring book is called the Healing Affirmation Coloring Book is color your way to healing and to love and self-trust.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: And so you want to just color though, I have affirmation prompts in there, even in the coloring book, because I want to keep people, especially women, thinking about their healing, constantly thinking about and being intentional in healing.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: And then the book that I have inside of me that I have not released yet, I don't know the exact title is gonna be, but it's called The Overthinker's Guide.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: And the reason I'm doing that is because I am truly an overthinker.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: I am constantly overthinking things.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: What if this happened?
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: And if this happened, and if that happened, and if that happened, and if that don't happen, and then and so I want to give a guide to people, even that way, it has a coaching workbook with it.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: So um I want to help free people in areas that I have experienced.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: And see, I feel like the best person to coach you or teach you or help you is a person that has experienced it.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: And so if I experience, I cannot tell you, I can't just tell you what a book said, but I can tell you what I've lived.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: And live experience sometimes are the best is the best teacher.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: If we if we can do it, sir, I feel if I can do it and take that step and take the steps that we've taken.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: You know, I released in January and God is doing a work.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: I mean, in a tremendous work, it never could have happened before.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: I really wasn't ready.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: I wanted it to be ready, but the door wouldn't open that, you know, I would start something and it wouldn't manifest, you know.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: So, you know, it's he just knows the perfect timing, and it's such a time as this.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: And because you have a we have a lot more to say, and we have the depth of the pain and the pressing, and we have the oil, you know, from our experience.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: And I think that is it's truly amazing.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: And I and I hear it when you speak.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: So just briefly talk about how you for you, your experience with your earthly father, how how did it affect, or what effect did it have with your heavenly father?
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: Talk about that.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: Really, the only effect it really had on me, it made me closer to my heavenly father.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: Um, because the guidance and the, like I said, the love that I needed came from God.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: I realized that no human person can love me the way that God loves me.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: Um, and so it really made me closer to God, it really made my relationship tighter with God because I lean on God for understanding, I lean on God for knowledge, I lean on God for direction.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: And so everything I needed in my earthly father, do I still long for the physical?
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: Yes, I do long for the physical.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: However, I realized that any emptiness of holes or anything that's lacking in my life, God makes up that difference.
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: And so I really became closer to God, and my relationship with Him has gotten so much better.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: And then what do you feel that when you be when you came on today?
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: Was there something that you also wanted to specifically say, you know, that you wanted listeners to hear?
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: Did you have something on your heart other than you know what we've talked about?
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: So I want to just encourage women to it's never too late.
- 18:46SPEAKER_01: It's never too late to start your journey, it's never too late to start the business, it's never too late to go back to school, it's never too late to do the things that God has called you to do.
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: It's never too late.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: I also want to let you know that you are enough.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: Because a lot of times we feel like I'm not enough.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: I can't do it.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: This person does it better than me.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: You are enough, you are enough just the way God created you.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: And so I just want to encourage a woman today to just take that first step.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: Just take the first step.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: You know, even if you're going through a healing journey, I want you to know that the first step is identifying who you are or what is going on in your life.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: A lot of times we've lost our identity and our roles.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: And so re-identifying who I am, knowing who you are in God.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: And so after you've done that, release those things that no longer serve you.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: If it's something in your life that's keeping you from your purpose and your destiny, let it go.
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: If it's not getting you to where you need to go, let it go.
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: Amen.
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: And lastly, I want to tell you to reset your purpose.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: Reset your purpose, find out what that purpose is and go for it with all you have and make the best of it.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: God has a plan for you.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: And remember, you're not alone.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: I've been there with you, and you can come out and you can heal.
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: And before we close, for the woman listening today who still feels unseen or unloved, what would you want her to know?
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: I want her to know that she's not unloved.
- 20:17SPEAKER_01: First of all, I love you.
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: And that God loves you, and so you're not unloved.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: And I want to just tell them that you know, you can get healed.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: I always tell people the first step of healing is identifying what the issue is.
