- 0:40[SPEAKER_00]: Hey everybody, Brian Smith here with the I&Team series and your daily influence.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_00]: And today we are going to be talking, again, about communications, specifically about effective communication and bridging the gaps in building connections with other people, which can be really difficult when
- 1:00[SPEAKER_00]: We have different communication styles and we have different issues that influence us that we don't know about going into a conversation with others.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_00]: We might not know their knowledge foundation.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_00]: We might not know where they are in understanding of a particular issue and it creates gaps and we have to build bridges.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_00]: Across those gaps to bring people into the topic into the conversation, so that we have better effective communication.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_00]: To do that, the first and the most important, and you've heard us talk about this.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_00]: Many, many times, is listening.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_00]: Words I like are listen to learn, and to have good individual influence in communication,
- 1:43[SPEAKER_00]: The emphasis is on the power of listening.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_00]: It is a key element of effective communication and active listening allows us.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_00]: as a participant in any conversation that's going on to have a better understanding of the perspectives, the context and the needs of the conversation and the people involved in it.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_00]: It's crucial to bridging communication gaps to have that understanding to have the best concept.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_00]: That means when we're listening, we're looking for opportunities to ask good questions, not necessarily just give advice.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_00]: It also means in our listening, listening is not just hearing words, but it's seeing it's seeing body language.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_00]: It's seeing if they're stressed or other things that are causing people in the conversation to look or be lost.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_00]: You might identify those gaps through their body language, through their tone.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_00]: So it's really important when we listen that we listen with everything our eyes and our ears.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_00]: When we have this type of transparency and set this expectation in our communication tactics, then we create an opportunity for clear direct.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_00]: communication that's free of ambiguity.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_00]: It also helps us to build trust with one another, minimize misunderstandings when we know what to expect from a person's communication style, what their body language is, what their tones might be.
- 3:11[SPEAKER_00]: Oftentimes, like for me, my tone gives away an emotion that I don't really want to be there, but it's there because of the type of human I am.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_00]: I get annoyed when I'm interrupted, but I leave my door open, which invites interruption.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_00]: The team knows that when they do come in and interrupt me because I had an open door and they get that tone that it's not personal.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_00]: It's just my transition point from where I was to being in tune with the
- 3:42[SPEAKER_00]: clear and transparent with them that I may appear annoyed, but I'm really not annoyed.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_00]: So having transparency and clarity in the way you communicate, sharing with people, how you communicate the triggers that you have, some of the body language or tones that might come out in your way of communicating.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_00]: If you're direct, if you're indirect, maybe you're a long talker, maybe you require a lot of details sharing all of that.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_00]: helps make the team better, it helps them to communicate with you, understand you better, and give you what you need to communicate effectively with them also.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_00]: Within all of that, we have to remain smart.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_00]: And as most of you should know, and if you're just joining us, smart is the way that we hear at IA and the IM team series do everything.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_00]: We manage companies,
- 4:33[SPEAKER_00]: with smart management.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_00]: That also means that we communicate with smart communication, meaning we are specific.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: We provide measurement when needed.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_00]: We allow for achievability and we are always searching for relevancy and we pay attention to the timeliness of the time.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_00]: Time that we are spending and is this the right time for this conversation even.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_00]: So putting smart into our communication
- 5:01[SPEAKER_00]: is really important.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_00]: It helps us to align and bridge those gaps and have better understanding.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_00]: And it also ensures that we have collective success.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_00]: Within this, we are going to always find that empathy will be a huge part of what we do in our communication.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_00]: When we see somebody struggling, when we hear somebody struggling, having empathy for that struggle,
- 5:27[SPEAKER_00]: is really important instead of being annoyed by that, taking an empathetic position with them and applying that empathy to help them through whatever struggle that is.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_00]: That means being transparent, being clear, sharing with them that you want to help them get through whatever roadblock or get over whatever gap they have.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_00]: And it does help foster deeper connection.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_00]: It opens up channels for more honest and productive conversations.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_00]: And finally, having shared purpose and value, so
- 5:58[SPEAKER_00]: When we go into a conversation, especially when it is in a business environment, it's really important that we maintain our core values.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_00]: If we find ourselves getting upset in the moment, then don't allow the emotion to take over the conversation.
- 6:14[SPEAKER_00]: Take a step back and help the team to understand why you're emotional.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_00]: And if somebody else is emotional, take a step back and help them understand and yourself, understand why they might be emotional.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_00]: It will help people to feel more in tune with the whole team feel safe with those emotions be safe and sharing what those triggers are and it will also build a build on to your core values whatever they may be and help drive people to more effective communication.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_00]: Doesn't matter if there's differences in background or perspectives when we respect and use our core values and we allow for transparency and clarity.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_00]: We allow ourselves to work the rule, things that cause disagreement, things that set off emotions and work together to come to some kind of either a resolution or an agreement that there is no resolution.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes that's the agreement.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_00]: That there is no agreement.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_00]: We'll go our separate ways.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_00]: We'll do our separate things.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_00]: We'll agree or understand different things.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_00]: And that's okay too.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_00]: communication with humans is hard and building effective communication between you and the people that are in your areas of influence will be something that you will work on your entire life.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_00]: Slawing down, listening, having clarity and transparency in being smart will take you most of the way, employing empathy and falling back on your values and being
- 7:51[SPEAKER_00]: the best and most positive, responsible individual you can with your influence will take you to the next level of communication for you in your areas of influence.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_00]: I hope you have a great day and I look forward to sharing more with you tomorrow and beyond have a great one.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_00]: Bye.
