• 1:49
Speaker 2: to join us. Lots to talk about in the world
• 1:51
Speaker 2: of news. Hey, you know, I was thinking about this.
• 1:53
Speaker 2: Danny has time on his hands now. Maybe he can
• 1:55
Speaker 2: be the new White House press secretary. I'll ask him

Speaker 2: are always welcome. Guarantee Bank Hotline 304-345-5858. Tony B. Taylor,

Speaker 2: text 304-935-500. I want to welcome to the show now, though,
• 2:10
Speaker 2: one of my favorite people, writer with the Gazette Mail
• 2:14
Speaker 2: and all-around good guy, Bill Lynch. How you doing, my friend?
• 2:16
Speaker 7: Welcome to the show. Gee, dude, that's like the nicest
• 2:20
Speaker 7: thing to start a Monday with. Yeah, but glad to
• 2:22
Speaker 7: be here. It's fantastic.
• 2:24
Speaker 2: But you're an all-around good guy?
• 2:24
Speaker 6: Is that what it is?
• 2:25
Speaker 7: I'll take that, yeah. Okay.
• 2:27
Speaker 2: Um, so, uh, people read your stuff in the paper. Uh,
• 2:31
Speaker 2: I do. And I say paper because I'm that guy.
• 2:34
  Speaker 7: I love that.
• 2:34
Speaker 1: As a hard cut.
• 2:35
Speaker 2: No, it's Monday or I'd have one with me today.
• 2:37
  Speaker 8: Right.
• 2:37
Speaker 2: That was my promise to, that was my promise to
• 2:39
Speaker 2: Doug Scaff. You know, Scaff always said he always came
• 2:42
Speaker 2: in when he was on my show and he always said,
• 2:44
Speaker 2: I usually had one with me and he would say,
• 2:46
Speaker 2: as we will have a subscription department because of you,
• 2:49
Speaker 2: Dave Allen, because you still get, you still like the
• 2:52
Speaker 2: hard copy of the paper.
• 2:53
  Speaker 9: Yeah.
• 2:53
Speaker 2: So you got a dog now.
• 2:55
  Speaker 7: I got a dog, yeah.
• 2:57
Speaker 2: And if you've not followed Bill's writing on this, you
• 3:00
Speaker 2: had a pet for a long time that you were very,
• 3:02
Speaker 2: very close to, and we've all gone through that, that passed,
• 3:06
Speaker 2: the Rainbow Bridge, as they say. And you went back
• 3:10
Speaker 2: and forth in your column about just couldn't pull the
• 3:13
Speaker 2: trigger on the new one, but you finally did.
• 3:16
Speaker 7: I did. So back in May, my dog, Penny, we've
• 3:20
Speaker 7: been together for 13 years, which- I joke about it.
• 3:23
Speaker 7: It's like longer than my two marriages put together almost. But,
• 3:27
Speaker 7: you know, we were together. She was a great companion,
• 3:31
Speaker 7: terrible with other dogs and also small children, but great
• 3:34
Speaker 7: with me. But, you know, she died. And I said
• 3:37
Speaker 7: those words, you know, I'm never going to do this
• 3:39
Speaker 7: again because I didn't expect the dog, you know, to
• 3:41
Speaker 7: losing a dog to feel as awful as it did. But,
• 3:45
Speaker 7: you know, summer was kind of lonely. The house was empty.
• 3:47
Speaker 7: I was used to having a dog, you know, when
• 3:51
Speaker 7: I got home. So somewhere, I guess, in August or so,
• 3:56
Speaker 7: I started thinking about it, like maybe. And so, yeah,
• 3:59
Speaker 7: last month I went through the whole process. I went
• 4:01
Speaker 7: up to the animal shelter. I've always had, I've never
• 4:05
Speaker 7: had like, I guess, a dog that you would like.
• 4:08
Speaker 7: pure breed or anything like that. It's always been like
• 4:10
Speaker 7: shelter dogs or dogs that, you know, that were in
• 4:12
Speaker 7: a box someplace and somebody said, here, take your house
• 4:14
Speaker 7: or something. Show up at your house. So, you know,
• 4:16
Speaker 7: I went to the whole process of going to the shelter,
• 4:19
Speaker 7: looking at rescue dogs, looking at foster dogs and went
• 4:23
Speaker 7: to the kennels a couple times, several times. And I
• 4:26
Speaker 7: just kind of talked to a vet about pet grief
• 4:31
Speaker 7: and even how to restart that and when to say goodbye.
• 4:34
Speaker 7: I mean, it was a lot of stuff to get there.
• 4:36
Speaker 7: And then I lucked out, and a nice lady had
• 4:40
Speaker 7: literally a car full of puppies. They were pretty big ones, too.
• 4:44
Speaker 7: They were about 25 pounds each. They were three months.
• 4:47
Speaker 2: Didn't you play in a band called A Car Full
• 4:49
Speaker 2: of Puppies? Yeah, I was a drummer.
• 4:51
  Speaker 10: No.
• 4:52
Speaker 7: But yeah, so I ended up with a dog, and
• 4:54
Speaker 7: her name is Daisy. She's been at my house now
• 4:56
Speaker 7: for almost a month, and she's currently in the teething phase,
• 5:00
Speaker 7: which is everything is edible.
• 5:02
  Speaker 1: Okay.
• 5:03
Speaker 7: What kind of dog is it? Well, she is.
• 5:07
Speaker 7: Half Australian Shepherd and we believe half American Mastiff. So
• 5:15
Speaker 7: estimation for her eventual weight is somewhere around 100 pounds.
• 5:21
  Speaker 5: Right.
• 5:21
  Speaker 10: Right.
• 5:22
Speaker 2: That's a big old dog, Bill.
• 5:23
  Speaker 7: That's a big dog. Okay.
• 5:25
Speaker 2: Are you prepared for that?
• 5:26
Speaker 7: I mean, nope. It's too late.
• 5:28
Speaker 2: I mean, you know, you're not that big a guy.
• 5:30
Speaker 2: Maybe you can ride the dog.
• 5:31
Speaker 7: I can ride the dog. Yeah. Well, the hope originally
• 5:33
Speaker 7: was like, you know, maybe I could have a dog
• 5:35
Speaker 7: that I could run with, right? But she, so far,
• 5:38
Speaker 7: is a big old couch hound. She likes to crash
• 5:42
Speaker 7: on the couch and flop over, you know, legs all
• 5:44
Speaker 7: up in the air. She's great.
• 5:46
Speaker 2: So I was going to say, when you take the
• 5:48
Speaker 2: dog for the walk, are you walking the dog or
• 5:50
Speaker 2: is the dog walking you?
• 5:51
Speaker 7: It goes back and forth. So we'll start with me. But,
• 5:53
Speaker 7: you know, if she takes off on a tear, she
• 5:55
Speaker 7: gets the zoomies. She's got quite a bit of torque.
• 5:59
Speaker 7: I mean, the last dog I had was like 14 pounds.
• 6:01
Speaker 7: So she currently is at 32 pounds at four months.
• 6:04
Speaker 7: And she's going to be 100 pounds. Probably 100 pounds. But,
• 6:06
Speaker 7: you know, so right now when she goes forward, I'm
• 6:08
Speaker 7: going to. It's just there's no way to stop it.
• 6:11
Speaker 2: I just, that's quite the contrast, Bill, to go from
• 6:14
Speaker 2: a dog that was as small as Penny was to
• 6:17
Speaker 2: what Daisy is now.
• 6:19
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 6:19
  Speaker 2: I mean, that's, normally there's like a progression up, but
• 6:22
Speaker 2: you are going all in on this.
• 6:24
  Speaker 8: Yeah.
• 6:24
Speaker 7: Well, part of it, I think, is that, you know,
• 6:26
Speaker 7: talking to the, I guess the vet, is that when
• 6:29
Speaker 7: you lose a pet, right, one of the things that
• 6:33
Speaker 7: will hold you up is you don't want to replace
• 6:34
Speaker 7: the pet. You don't want to like, you know.
• 6:36
  Speaker 6: Exactly.
• 6:36
Speaker 7: You know, it's a relationship. You have that with your dog,
• 6:40
Speaker 7: with your cat. You don't want. You know, replacing it
• 6:42
Speaker 7: with the same thing. It can feel a little hollow,
• 6:45
Speaker 7: a little disingenuous, maybe even. So, you know, Daisy is
• 6:51
Speaker 7: the exact, everything opposite of the last dog I had.
• 6:55
Speaker 2: How's she done around other people? Has she been around
• 6:57
Speaker 2: other people? Because you said that your previous dog wasn't
• 6:59
Speaker 2: that great around other people.
• 7:00
Speaker 7: Wasn't really great around children.
• 7:02
Speaker 2: Which neither am I, for that matter.
• 7:04
Speaker 7: Or, you know, other dogs. She was really kind of hostile.
• 7:07
Speaker 7: Daisy is terrified of almost everything. Uh, she's, she's very shy.
• 7:12
Speaker 7: She's slow to warm up around people, but she's, you know,
• 7:14
Speaker 7: she's friendly when she warms up. And, uh, the, the
• 7:17
Speaker 7: neighbor dog was, you know, my, uh, Penny hated her. So,
• 7:21
Speaker 7: you know, it was this 10 pound something or another,
• 7:23
Speaker 7: some kind of a little, uh, La Hossa Opsa or, uh, Pomeranian.
• 7:26
Speaker 2: What's your language on my show?
• 7:28
Speaker 7: Right. Uh, but, um, you know, Penny would see it
• 7:31
Speaker 7: and would like tense up and like, like, if I
• 7:34
Speaker 7: could get loose, I will go kill this dog. Daisy,
• 7:37
Speaker 7: who is, you know, 30 some pounds, looks at the
• 7:40
Speaker 7: dog and is like terrified.
• 7:42
  Speaker 2: It's amazing.
• 7:43
Speaker 7: Terrified of a 10 pound dog.
• 7:45
Speaker 2: Isn't that amazing the way that that is? I mean,
• 7:48
Speaker 2: that pets do that sometimes that they'll be afraid of.
• 7:51
Speaker 2: you know, certain things or certain things that are much
• 7:54
Speaker 2: smaller than them knowing. It's like the old, I don't
• 7:56
Speaker 2: know whether it's a myth or not, about how elephants
• 7:58
Speaker 2: were supposedly afraid of mice. That was an old thing,
• 8:00
Speaker 2: you know, that went along.
• 8:01
Speaker 7: Yeah, I think Daisy's just, you know, frightened of grown-up dogs.
• 8:05
  Speaker 7: She's a puppy, so she's scared of everything that's older
• 8:08
Speaker 7: than she is, which is virtually everything.
• 8:10
Speaker 2: I got to tell a quick story. My wife and
• 8:11
Speaker 2: I have cats. We like dogs, but our lifestyle is
• 8:14
Speaker 2: more conducive to cats. Our cats never leave the house.
• 8:15
Speaker 2: They both show they They all show up as strays.
• 8:18
Speaker 2: We're not taking any borders. We're done. Two's good for us.
• 8:23
Speaker 2: But yesterday morning, my wife and I turned on the
• 8:26
Speaker 2: heat for the first time in the house.
• 8:28
  Speaker 7: Okay.
• 8:29
Speaker 2: One of our cats' names, we have two. We have
• 8:30
  Speaker 2: Grady and Waylon.
• 8:32
  Speaker 7: Okay.
• 8:33
Speaker 2: Grady, named after Grady on the greatest show ever, Sanford
• 8:35
Speaker 2: and Son. They're both Russian blues. We don't know if
• 8:38
Speaker 2: they're purebred because I said they showed up as strays.
• 8:41
Speaker 2: They identify as Russian blues.
• 8:42
Speaker 7: There you go. Okay.
• 8:43
Speaker 2: So- When the heat comes on, you know, for the
• 8:46
Speaker 2: first time since, you know, what, March, April, whatever, you know,
• 8:49
Speaker 2: there's always a little bit of an odor to it
• 8:51
Speaker 2: until it kind of kicks in. We never have to
• 8:55
Speaker 2: worry about, God forbid, dying in a house fire. Because
• 8:58
Speaker 2: the minute that that heat came on, Grady smelled it
• 9:01
Speaker 2: and just started like, and he doesn't run a whole lot.
• 9:04
Speaker 2: He's kind of built like I am. Marshmallow with four
• 9:07
Speaker 2: toothpicks sticking out of it. Grady just goes running around, meowing,
• 9:11
Speaker 2: which he never does, at the top of his lungs
• 9:14
Speaker 2: and running to the vent and looking up at us,
• 9:16
Speaker 2: like saying, there's something going on here, you know? And
• 9:20
Speaker 2: after a while, he kind of got, but I thought,
• 9:21
  Speaker 2: I told Ruthann, my wife, I said, well, that's a
• 9:23
Speaker 2: pretty good sign right there that if we ever do,
• 9:25
Speaker 2: God forbid, as I said, had a house fire, I
• 9:27
Speaker 2: think the cat's going to save our life because he
• 9:28
Speaker 2: was freaked out by the odor.
• 9:31
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 9:31
Speaker 7: It's kind of like a, I guess a craft fire alarm,
• 9:33
Speaker 7: you know, it's like, you know, a free range fire alarm.
• 9:37
  Speaker 7: There you go.
• 9:39
Speaker 2: Are you still doing the thing where you're interviewing random people?
• 9:41
Speaker 7: I haven't been doing it much lately, but it's mostly
• 9:44
Speaker 7: been a time issue. But yeah, it's fun. I'm going
• 9:47
Speaker 7: to get back to that.
• 9:47
Speaker 2: Last time I had you on, we talked about that. Basically, again,
• 9:51
Speaker 2: we're talking to Bill Lynch of the Gazette-Mail. What you
• 9:52
Speaker 2: did was you would just go sit downtown, grab a
• 9:55
Speaker 2: coffee or whatever, your capital market, different places, and just
• 9:59
Speaker 2: interview people. And I thought it was some of the
• 10:01
Speaker 2: best stuff that you've done. I mean, I loved it.
• 10:04
Speaker 7: A reason to keep doing it, to get back to it.
• 10:06
  Speaker 8: Yeah.
• 10:07
Speaker 2: And you would just kind of choose people at random
• 10:10
Speaker 2: and tell their stories.
• 10:11
  Speaker 5: Yes.
• 10:12
Speaker 2: And everybody's got a story and everybody's got a fascinating story,
• 10:16
  Speaker 2: fascinating to someone.
• 10:17
  Speaker 3: Sure.
• 10:18
Speaker 2: They don't all have to be athletes and they all
• 10:20
Speaker 2: don't have to be politicians and actors and singers and whatever.
• 10:23
Speaker 2: The guy who is delivering your pizza, chances are, has
• 10:27
Speaker 2: got a much more interesting story than LeBron James.
• 10:30
  Speaker 6: Probably.
• 10:30
Speaker 2: Just throwing it out there.
• 10:31
Speaker 7: Well, you probably already heard LeBron James' story a dozen times, but,
• 10:34
Speaker 7: you know, someone who is just, who's just there, you know,
• 10:38
Speaker 7: they have to be interested in telling their story for
• 10:40
Speaker 7: the first part, but. But, you know, typically what I
• 10:42
Speaker 7: experienced with that entire month with that was that, you know,
• 10:46
Speaker 7: you're friendly, you're interested. People want to talk about themselves normally.
• 10:50
Speaker 7: They love talking about themselves. They do. I like talking
• 10:52
Speaker 7: about myself. So, I mean, why wouldn't you? And, you know,
• 10:54
Speaker 7: if you catch them, you know, whatever they're talking, what
• 10:56
Speaker 7: is at the top of their mind, that's going to
• 10:58
Speaker 7: be their story that day. So it changes.
• 11:00
Speaker 2: Do you follow or comment on politics at all?
• 11:05
Speaker 7: As little as humanly possible.
• 11:07
Speaker 2: I know because you're– how do you describe your writing?
• 11:09
Speaker 2: I mean– if somebody says, well, what kind of writer
• 11:13
Speaker 2: are you? I mean, because, you know, there's, okay, I
• 11:16
Speaker 2: cover crime, I cover sports, I cover the courts. Would
• 11:18
  Speaker 2: just lifestyle?
• 11:19
  Speaker 7: I mean, I would say lifestyle-ish. A lot of what
• 11:25
Speaker 7: I do is, yeah, is mostly just chronically a daily life,
• 11:30
Speaker 7: a kind of life. The, you know, the one month
• 11:33
Speaker 7: at a time thing has often been Just about exploring
• 11:37
Speaker 7: the world that I exist in and the things that
• 11:39
Speaker 7: sort of– not everything I do actually interests me in
• 11:42
Speaker 7: the beginning, but everything interests me by the end of it.
• 11:44
Speaker 7: It's just to explore the options and things that are
• 11:47
Speaker 7: out there. Different months, like talking to different people. The
• 11:52
Speaker 7: idea of getting a dog when you don't want to
• 11:53
Speaker 7: get a dog. I did a month on artificial intelligence
• 11:56
Speaker 7: because I was curious about it. And I was frightened
• 11:59
  Speaker 7: of it.
• 11:59
Speaker 2: And look what you started because now that's all anybody's
• 12:01
  Speaker 2: talking about.
• 12:02
Speaker 7: Everyone's talking about it 24-7 these days it seems like. But, yeah,
• 12:06
Speaker 7: it's always something about understanding the world that I live
• 12:10
Speaker 7: in and what I don't understand about it. Or worse,
• 12:13
  Speaker 7: what I think I understand but I really don't. And
• 12:17
Speaker 7: that crops up all the time. And it's easy. Just
• 12:20
Speaker 7: kind of move in a direction, and it just happens.
• 12:22
Speaker 2: And going to, because everybody always says, well, in this area,
• 12:25
Speaker 2: we need this. We need this restaurant, or we need
• 12:28
Speaker 2: this store. And you actually went, or I went to
• 12:31
  Speaker 2: some of those.
• 12:32
  Speaker 4: I did.
• 12:32
Speaker 7: I went up to, I'd never been to a Costco.
• 12:35
Speaker 7: Had a lovely experience. They were great. I also went
• 12:38
Speaker 7: to a P.F. Chang's. Had an awful experience. Don't recommend it. Apparently,
• 12:42
Speaker 7: this Panda Express is much better. Next time. But, you know,
• 12:45
Speaker 7: I did that. Yeah, I went up to Ohio and
• 12:49
Speaker 7: then to Huntington. I just went to places where they
• 12:53
Speaker 7: had restaurants and some stores that people talk about here
• 12:56
Speaker 7: that they desperately want. And I don't always get it, actually.
• 13:00
Speaker 2: People always want something. I mean, any time, and of course,
• 13:03
Speaker 2: we've talked ad nauseum over the last, how many years
• 13:07
Speaker 2: about the town center. Well, we just need this here.
• 13:09
Speaker 2: We just need that here. And I have been banging
• 13:11
Speaker 2: the drum saying, number one, no matter what you put
• 13:14
Speaker 2: in there, it's not going to say, it's not going
• 13:15
Speaker 2: to turn the clock back to Charleston Town Center in 1989.
• 13:18
Speaker 2: That's simply not going to happen. But people are surprised
• 13:23
Speaker 2: at what goes into deciding what one of these, you
• 13:26
Speaker 2: mentioned Costco, a Trader Joe's, a Whole Foods, whatever, where
• 13:30
Speaker 2: they go. They've got metrics that you and I would
• 13:32
Speaker 2: never understand when it comes to traffic, when it comes
• 13:35
Speaker 2: to when it comes to disposable income. I mean, there's
• 13:39
Speaker 2: a lot that goes into that. Probably competition, too. I
• 13:41
Speaker 2: was looking into Costco. So their biggest competitor would be
• 13:47
Speaker 2: Sam's Club. In fact, Costco is a little ahead of
• 13:51
Speaker 2: Sam's Club. So my guess is the folks at Costco
• 13:54
Speaker 2: looked at you know, the numbers on Sam's Club and
• 13:58
Speaker 2: how many people were probably shopping there and what kind
• 14:01
Speaker 2: of incomes were going there. And they said, well, we
• 14:04
Speaker 2: could fight it out with them there or we could not.
• 14:07
Speaker 2: So that's why they're not here, is that the competition
• 14:12
Speaker 2: isn't worth the fight. Is there, though, a particular, I'll
• 14:18
Speaker 2: turn it on and I'll give mine, is there one
• 14:20
Speaker 2: of those These national chains, and I'm not big on
• 14:22
Speaker 2: national chains. I'd say try to support local as much
• 14:25
Speaker 2: as possible. But, you know, every now and then everybody
• 14:28
Speaker 2: wants a quarter pounder. You know, I'm just saying, or
• 14:30
Speaker 2: Taco Bell or whatever. Is there some national chain out
• 14:32
  Speaker 2: there that you.
• 14:33
Speaker 7: Would like to see? Just a jack in the box
• 14:35
Speaker 7: because I've never had one.
• 14:36
  Speaker 8: Yeah.
• 14:37
  Speaker 5: Right.
• 14:37
Speaker 7: You know, I don't travel nearly as much as I
• 14:40
Speaker 7: ought to. And that's brought up more and more every
• 14:43
Speaker 7: time I talk to somebody. They go, well, you know,
• 14:46
Speaker 7: driving to Buffalo, New York is only six hours. I'm like, really?
• 14:49
Speaker 7: It's only six hours? But I've never done that. But
• 14:52
Speaker 7: all these places that are out there that I haven't tried.
• 14:56
Speaker 7: And it sounds interesting. Jack in the Box, you see
• 14:59
Speaker 7: that on TV and in movies.
• 15:00
  Speaker 2: In-N-Out Burger. That's another one.
• 15:02
  Speaker 7: In-N-Out Burger.
• 15:02
Speaker 2: Talk to Danny about that when he comes in.
• 15:04
Speaker 7: Yeah, exactly. So it's always the stuff that seems like
• 15:07
Speaker 7: it's so foreign and exotic, right? I think of like,
• 15:11
Speaker 7: what was it, Five Guys. When it finally came to
• 15:15
Speaker 7: West Virginia, people lost their minds. Or Starbucks. I remember
• 15:20
Speaker 7: the days when there was no Starbucks in the state, right?
• 15:22
Speaker 7: And then we got like two. Two and like within
• 15:25
Speaker 7: six months and it was crazy. And now we got
• 15:27
Speaker 7: them like every, you know.
• 15:28
Speaker 2: Putnam County in a two-mile radius, we have at least,
• 15:32
Speaker 2: we have four Starbucks in a three to four-mile radius.
• 15:35
  Speaker 10: Right.
• 15:36
Speaker 7: Oh, I get that. We'll see the excitement of having
• 15:39
Speaker 7: something that seems exotic or is big league, right? Because
• 15:43
Speaker 7: everyone else has got this. Um, and you know, it's
• 15:46
Speaker 7: cool and all, but you know, to be honest, I
• 15:48
Speaker 7: don't go to Starbucks that much. I don't go at all.
• 15:50
Speaker 7: You know, I go to Mayakapa or I go to
• 15:52
Speaker 7: Taylor books. I, or, you know, I, I tend to
• 15:54
Speaker 7: go to, to local service. Sure. I'll try the, the
• 15:56
Speaker 7: big national, but you know, if I'm, if I'm honest,
• 15:59
Speaker 7: you know, if let's say an In-N-Out burger got here.
• 16:03
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 16:03
Speaker 7: I'm, I would probably go a couple of times and
• 16:05
Speaker 7: then probably go back to, you know, to, to Fern
• 16:07
Speaker 7: bank or I'd, you know, I'd go to Ursus or something,
• 16:10
Speaker 7: something local or get a Sam burger with that, that
• 16:13
Speaker 7: gigantic monstrosity. I would absolutely try the Big National, but
• 16:18
Speaker 7: then go back to my local.
• 16:20
Speaker 2: We'll close with this. I had a buddy of mine
• 16:22
Speaker 2: that is a huge Red Robin fan.
• 16:25
  Speaker 10: Okay.
• 16:25
Speaker 2: And he literally would drive. There's one outside Columbus. He
• 16:29
Speaker 2: would literally drive up, eat at Red Robin, go to
• 16:33
Speaker 2: a movie by himself. And then go have dinner at
• 16:37
Speaker 2: Red Robin and then come home.
• 16:39
Speaker 7: Okay. Hey, whatever. You do you.
• 16:40
  Speaker 4: You.
• 16:41
Speaker 2: And when I ate at Red Robin, I was completely disappointed.
• 16:43
Speaker 2: And I thought, this is what all the, come on, man.
• 16:45
Speaker 2: This is what all the hype is about. Bill, you're
• 16:48
Speaker 2: in the paper every Sunday.
• 16:50
Speaker 7: Well, every weekend. Every weekend.
• 16:52
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 16:52
Speaker 7: That's me. All right. Bill Lynch, man.
• 16:55
Speaker 2: It's always a pleasure to have you on the show.
• 16:56
Speaker 7: Dave, thanks so much. It's great being here.

Speaker 2: Coming up later today, Metro News Midday, powered by Selangor
• 20:12
Speaker 2: Law with Amanda Barron and me. You've heard, I'm sure
• 20:15
Speaker 2: now we've talked about it throughout the morning on Metro News,
• 20:17
Speaker 2: about the death of Ike Morris, major player in the
• 20:20
Speaker 2: gas industry, oil industry. He was the owner of Waco Oil, actually.
• 20:24
Speaker 2: He passed, and the tributes are pouring in. I know
• 20:27
Speaker 2: the Talk Line boys are going to talk about him
• 20:28
Speaker 2: a little bit. Senator Ben Queen, who serves on the
• 20:32
Speaker 2: Harrison County area, very, very close with Mr.
• 20:34
  Speaker 11: Morris.
• 20:34
Speaker 2: He's going to join us to talk about it on
• 20:36
Speaker 2: the show. And in addition to being quite the mogul
• 20:41
Speaker 2: in the industry, I mean, he was a philanthropist as well,
• 20:44
Speaker 2: gave millions of dollars to various projects in North Central
• 20:48
Speaker 2: West Virginia. He was very, very closely associated, he and
• 20:51
Speaker 2: his wife, with Glenville State University. Didn't know him personally,
• 20:54
Speaker 2: knew the name certainly, but Senator Ben Queen did know him.
• 20:58
Speaker 2: He's going to join us on the show coming up
• 20:59
Speaker 2: a little bit later on. Also, we have a story
• 21:02
Speaker 2: posted about this at the website, a candidate for state
• 21:05
Speaker 2: senate in District 4, is now officially off the ballot.
• 21:08
Speaker 2: His name is Zachary Abbott. And the current holder of
• 21:11
Speaker 2: the seat, Senator Eric Tarr, filed a lawsuit against him
• 21:15
Speaker 2: and Secretary of State Chris Warner. Tarr is saying that
• 21:18
Speaker 2: Abbott had not lived in the district for a full
• 21:21
Speaker 2: year ahead of the general election, which is required by
• 21:25
Speaker 2: state code. Candidate Abbott signed the order Friday, so he's done.
• 21:30
Speaker 2: Senator Tarr will join us to talk about that. Jason
• 21:33
Speaker 2: Huffman from Americans for Prosperity will stop by. Author Robert
• 21:35
Speaker 2: Bates is here and more. Metro News Midday with Amanda
• 21:38
Speaker 2: Barrett and me, presented by Salango Law. And it's coming
• 21:41
Speaker 2: up at noon today. On this show tomorrow, the news
• 21:45
Speaker 2: broke about a week, half an hour or so ago,
• 21:47
Speaker 2: that Scott Dempsey was going to be retiring as the
• 21:51
Speaker 2: police chief in the city of Charleston. So he's going
• 21:54
Speaker 2: to join us. He'll be retiring this week. Chief Dempsey
• 21:58
Speaker 2: is going to join us on the show tomorrow, along
• 21:59
Speaker 2: with his replacement, the new Chief Jason Webb. on the
• 22:02
Speaker 2: show tomorrow. We'll talk about Scott Dempsey's career as a
• 22:07
Speaker 2: police officer here and let you get to know Jason Webb,
• 22:11
Speaker 2: who's a longtime member of the department as well. So
• 22:13
Speaker 2: they'll both join us tomorrow. Also, we continue to talk
• 22:15
Speaker 2: to candidates ahead of the November 3rd election. Malika Knapp-Smith,
• 22:21
Speaker 2: who was a candidate for Charleston City Council in Ward 8,
• 22:24
Speaker 2: is going to join us on the show tomorrow. And
• 22:26
Speaker 2: speaking of candidates. Election day is November the 3rd, and
• 22:31
Speaker 2: if you are a candidate for office, you know how
• 22:34
Speaker 2: this works. I will grant you one, one free interview
• 22:39
Speaker 2: to tell the world who you are, what you stand for,
• 22:43
Speaker 2: why you're running, your biography, etc., etc. But I do
• 22:47
Speaker 2: need you to know this. You do need to schedule
• 22:50
Speaker 2: with me soon, because as I said, election day is
• 22:53
Speaker 2: November the 3rd. Early voting is is going to start
• 22:57
Speaker 2: on Wednesday, and there are only so many slots to
• 22:59
Speaker 2: go around. So I'm putting it out there right now.
• 23:02
Speaker 2: I'll give you the interview, but I need you to
• 23:05
Speaker 2: get with me as soon as possible. Best way to
• 23:07
Speaker 2: do it, drop me an email, dave.allen at wvradio.com, dave.allen, wvradio.com,
• 23:17
Speaker 2: and we'll try our best to get you scheduled. Now,
• 23:19
Speaker 2: we're getting down to the wire here, so I try
• 23:22
Speaker 2: to spread these things out so I don't have an
• 23:25
Speaker 2: entire show one morning that's nothing but candidate interviews. I mean,
• 23:29
Speaker 2: I'm glad to give you the time, but let's try
• 23:30
Speaker 2: to spread these things out. Now, later this week, as
• 23:33
Speaker 2: I said, I have a Charleston City Council candidate on
• 23:35
Speaker 2: the show tomorrow. I got a House candidate on the
• 23:38
Speaker 2: show Wednesday and two more candidates for circuit judge at
• 23:41
Speaker 2: Putnam County. I interviewed one last week and I got
• 23:44
Speaker 2: two more coming up. Thursday, and Friday, respectively, this week.
• 23:47
Speaker 2: So again, drop me an email, dave.allen at wvradio.com, dave.allen
• 23:54
Speaker 2: at wvradio.com. The Dave Allen Show on 580 Live is

• 24:13

• 24:18
Speaker 2: across West Virginia. Now, in Kanawha County, the locations are
• 24:21
Speaker 2: voters registration, we just kind of called it voters in Charleston,
• 24:25
Speaker 2: the Crosslanes Sheriff Detachment, the West Sats Community Center in Nitro,
• 24:30
Speaker 2: the Bell Town Hall, the Elk View Community Center, the
• 24:33
Speaker 2: Girl Scouts of the Black Diamond on the west end
• 24:36
Speaker 2: of Charleston, Marmette Town Hall, St. Albans City Hall, the
• 24:39
Speaker 2: Sissonville Library, and the South Charleston Community Center. Early voting, again,
• 24:43
Speaker 2: Ten days prior to the November 3rd election starts on
• 24:46
Speaker 2: Wednesday and two Saturdays. In Putnam County, early voting held
• 24:50
Speaker 2: at Valley Park at the Conference Center and also at
• 24:52
Speaker 2: the courthouse. Same deal there as well. So whether you
• 24:54
Speaker 2: vote on Election Day or you do the early voting,
• 24:57
Speaker 2: just make sure you vote. And election night, we'll have
• 25:00
Speaker 2: coverage starting just after 7 o'clock or so locally and
• 25:05
Speaker 2: via the Metro News Radio Network. All hands on deck.
• 25:08
Speaker 2: You know, Jeff Jenkins. Brad, TJ, Dave Wilson, Daniel Woods,
• 25:12
Speaker 2: and myself. And I'm probably leaving somebody out. But we
• 25:16
Speaker 2: will all be involved in election coverage. So hope that
• 25:18
Speaker 2: you'll tune in for our election coverage again on election night, Tuesday,
• 25:23
  Speaker 2: November 3rd. We'll start just after 7 o'clock. Guarantee Bank Hotline, 304-345-5858.

• 29:43
Speaker 2: book about spiro agnew this book is uh it's.
• 29:46
Speaker 6: Called a heartbeat away this guy wrote two books about
• 29:51
Speaker 6: agnew one was called white knight and this was the
• 29:55
Speaker 6: one he wrote after um agnew resigned and it's not
• 30:01
Speaker 6: kind at all but it uh goes through the the
• 30:07
Speaker 6: um investigation and um and um i mean agnew would
• 30:15
Speaker 6: have been president you know he he would have um
• 30:20
Speaker 6: he would have um Remember, Nixon resigned, so the vice
• 30:25
Speaker 6: president stepped up, and that was the vice president that
• 30:27
Speaker 6: took Agnew's place. And Agnew was, he was really into
• 30:35
Speaker 6: wearing nice clothes, and he was, they had a guy
• 30:41
Speaker 6: named Blackhurst or Black something who had the 10 best-dressed
• 30:47
Speaker 6: men in Washington or And Agnew was always number one.
• 30:52
Speaker 6: And he came from nothing. His dad owned a restaurant,
• 31:02
Speaker 6: and then the depression came along, and they wiped him out.
• 31:12
Speaker 6: And he went and was— this is what people don't know
• 31:15
Speaker 6: about him— is he was a captain. in World War II
• 31:22
Speaker 6: and won the Bronze Star and fought in the Battle
• 31:26
Speaker 6: of the Bulge. He had gone to undergraduate school at
• 31:31
Speaker 6: Johns Hopkins, but when he came back, he wanted to
• 31:34
Speaker 6: go to law school, but he couldn't afford, you know.
• 31:37
Speaker 6: So he went to work at a grocery store in
• 31:40
Speaker 6: the daytime, and then he went to work where he
• 31:44
Speaker 6: worked his way up to number two in the grocery
• 31:47
Speaker 6: store chain. And then he went to law school at
• 31:52
Speaker 6: night at the University of Baltimore. And then by 1955,
• 31:59
Speaker 6: he had a mentor named J. Walter Jones. And J.
• 32:06
Speaker 6: Walter Jones says, register a Republican. There's too much fighting
• 32:11
Speaker 6: going on inside the Democrat Party. And he did. And
• 32:16
Speaker 6: in 62, he was elected to county commissioner. In 66,
• 32:25
Speaker 6: all this was because of fighting inside the Democrat Party.
• 32:29
Speaker 6: In 66, the Democrats nominated a guy named George Mahoney.
• 32:34
Speaker 6: And George Mahoney, he was a segregationist. So the Baltimore
• 32:41
Speaker 6: Sun endorsed Agnew. And Agnew got elected governor in 66th.
• 32:45
Speaker 6: And then Nixon picked him to be vice president in 68.
• 32:51
Speaker 6: I mean, he went from county commissioner to 66.
• 32:54
Speaker 2: I guess I didn't realize he had that sort of
• 32:56
  Speaker 2: a meteoric rise.
• 32:57
Speaker 6: Oh, my goodness, yeah. And he was slick. He was funny.
• 33:04
Speaker 6: He had good speechwriters. One guy named Vic Gold. Another guy,
• 33:09
Speaker 6: name you know, named Pat Buchanan.
• 33:12
  Speaker 8: Oh, yeah.
• 33:13
Speaker 6: And– he would, uh, he was always, he made a
• 33:18
Speaker 6: speech November 11th, 1969. I was in the, um, Marine
• 33:25
  Speaker 6: Corps boot camp. And he, I didn't, so I didn't
• 33:29
Speaker 6: know about speech, but he took on the press. And, um,
• 33:35
Speaker 6: and it was a great speech. It was in Des Moines, Iowa. And, um,
• 33:41
Speaker 6: it drove the media crazy.
• 33:43
Speaker 2: And, um, Which goes to show you that people in
• 33:47
Speaker 2: positions of power having beef, as they say, with people
• 33:52
Speaker 2: in the media is not anything new.
• 33:55
Speaker 6: Well, and I came up, of course. But he was
• 33:58
Speaker 6: better at it. I mean, he was really good.
• 34:01
  Speaker 7: Right, yeah.
• 34:02
Speaker 6: And I've got the speech. I mean, I have. And
• 34:09
Speaker 6: it's just a great speech. And then he gave a
• 34:12
Speaker 6: speech a few nights later, and he said the sale
• 34:15
Speaker 6: of tranquilizers has gone up among the D.C. press corps.
• 34:21
Speaker 2: Speaking of D.C., I want to ask you about this.
• 34:23
Speaker 2: You know, you've got time on your hands, Danny. Maybe
• 34:25
Speaker 2: you should be the new White House press secretary because
• 34:28
Speaker 2: they have a hard time keeping people in that position, apparently.
• 34:31
Speaker 2: You have to wear the blonde wig, of course, because
• 34:33
  Speaker 2: there's a stereotype there.
• 34:35
Speaker 6: Well, maybe that NBA player that went to the WNBA
• 34:41
Speaker 6: game with the blonde wig on. Yeah, there you go.
• 34:43
Speaker 7: What do you make of all that?
• 34:49
Speaker 6: You know, Scaramucci was White House press secretary for 11 days. 11, yeah.
• 34:57
Speaker 6: And now he's a Trump hater. And, I mean, what
• 35:05
Speaker 6: were they thinking? Don't they have people, don't they have
• 35:11
  Speaker 6: a bench somewhere?
• 35:13
Speaker 2: That's kind of what I was thinking. And, you know,
• 35:16
Speaker 2: you almost take personalities aside of, of course, we don't,
• 35:20
Speaker 2: neither one of us know any of these people, but
• 35:22
Speaker 2: you almost felt sorry for her being put in that position.
• 35:25
Speaker 2: She put herself in the position. She applied for the job,
• 35:28
Speaker 2: I guess, but it was not good. It was not good.
• 35:31
Speaker 6: I didn't see her. Was she not good?
• 35:33
Speaker 2: Yeah, she was not good. And there's questions about her embellishing. Now,
• 35:38
Speaker 2: I don't know whether they're true or not, that she
• 35:40
Speaker 2: wasn't actually an attorney. She claimed to be and so
• 35:42
Speaker 2: on and so forth. But the bottom line is, it
• 35:44
Speaker 2: seems like it's somewhat of a revolving door there with
• 35:48
Speaker 2: people within the Trump administration.
• 35:54
  Speaker 8: The.
• 35:56
  Speaker 6: I don't know the answer. I don't know who to
• 35:59
Speaker 6: tell them to get. But certainly there ought to be somebody. Now,
• 36:05
Speaker 6: it used to be that presidents would pick it out
• 36:09
Speaker 6: of the press corps. But who in the world is
• 36:12
Speaker 6: going to go to work for them?
• 36:13
Speaker 2: They've been at war. I mean, Donald Trump has been
• 36:15
Speaker 2: at war with them or they've been at war with
• 36:16
Speaker 2: him since 2016. Well, they've ruined their career.
• 36:19
Speaker 6: Their career would be over once they went to work
• 36:21
  Speaker 6: for Trump.
• 36:22
  Speaker 8: Mm-hmm.
• 36:23
Speaker 6: I mean, look at what's Pam Bondi going to do now.
• 36:28
Speaker 6: What's the former governor of Cupid up there in South Dakota?
• 36:32
Speaker 2: Well, there are still some people, though, that have served
• 36:35
Speaker 2: in that role as press secretary. I mean, Scaramucci, you mentioned.
• 36:37
Speaker 2: I mean, he's not on Meet the Press every week,
• 36:40
Speaker 2: but I will say he is on– he's still making appearances,
• 36:43
Speaker 2: and Kellyanne Conway, too.
• 36:45
Speaker 6: What I'm talking– yeah, but she left on good terms.
• 36:49
Speaker 6: What I'm talking about, though, is– people that go to
• 36:54
Speaker 6: work for Trump in any capacity, once they're gone, their
• 36:59
Speaker 6: career is over. I mean, what's– I like Kimberly Guilfoyle.
• 37:05
Speaker 6: I mean, I remember when she was on Fox.
• 37:08
  Speaker 7: I do.
• 37:08
Speaker 2: She was on The Five, yeah.
• 37:10
Speaker 6: Yeah, and I would– I always watched Bret Baier from
• 37:13
Speaker 6: six to seven, but I would turn on early, and
• 37:16
Speaker 6: there was that flirty, leggy, beautiful– Kimberly Guilfoyle, I liked her,
• 37:25
Speaker 6: you know. But what the hell was she thinking? I mean,
• 37:30
Speaker 6: you know, I looked at her net worth. She's worth
• 37:32
  Speaker 6: somewhere between $ 12 and $ 16 million.
• 37:37
Speaker 2: But she's wanting somebody to, you know, pay off bills
• 37:39
  Speaker 2: for her?
• 37:40
  Speaker 7: I mean.
• 37:41
Speaker 6: What's that all about?
• 37:42
Speaker 2: I mean, the Wall Street Journal did some in-depth reporting
• 37:44
Speaker 2: on that. That does not look good, you know, toward her.
• 37:47
  Speaker 6: Well, and the.
• 37:50
Speaker 6: But over in Greece, they liked her. So I just— what
• 37:57
Speaker 6: in the world are these people thinking? You know, it's always,
• 38:03
Speaker 6: always about entitlement. You know, whether it's a politician taking
• 38:09
Speaker 6: envelopes or— Or Kimberly Guilfoyle, who I like, you know,
• 38:16
Speaker 6: or Spiro Agnew, taking envelopes.
• 38:19
Speaker 2: It's nothing new. I mean, it's been around forever.
• 38:21
Speaker 6: But it's always about entitlement. And people, I guess, think
• 38:30
Speaker 6: they're worth more than what they're getting with me. And
• 38:35
Speaker 6: I'm no righteous guy. You can read my book and
• 38:38
Speaker 6: you can tell it.
• 38:39
  Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
• 38:40
Speaker 6: You know, I was a late starter. But after the
• 38:47
Speaker 6: Daniel Moon Hotel and all my antics, you know, in
• 38:51
Speaker 6: the 70s, I always thought it was an honor to serve.
• 38:59
  Speaker 6: I never took a dime. Not a dime. You couldn't
• 39:04
Speaker 6: have given me money. And they tried. When I was
• 39:08
Speaker 6: running for sheriff, those car dealers, they wanted to give
• 39:11
Speaker 6: me money because they didn't want to pay taxes. I
• 39:15
Speaker 6: was the treasurer of the county. And no, I'm not
• 39:20
Speaker 6: meeting with those guys. I wasn't going to meet with– well,
• 39:24
  Speaker 6: he's dead now.
• 39:26
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 39:27
Speaker 2: Let me ask you something about, let me give you
• 39:28
Speaker 2: a quote from Donald Trump.
• 39:30
  Speaker 6: Okay.
• 39:31
Speaker 2: This was in a rally over the weekend. We have
• 39:35
Speaker 2: five states where your child goes off to school as
• 39:38
Speaker 2: Tim and comes back as Tammy three to four days later.
• 39:42
  Speaker 7: It's true.
• 39:43
Speaker 2: And teachers make a decision. Goodbye, Timmy. I love you
• 39:45
Speaker 2: so much. I'll see you later. And you say, where's
• 39:47
Speaker 2: my son? My son is in the hospital. Can you imagine?
• 39:50
Speaker 2: They don't even need approval.
• 39:51
  Speaker 7: It's sick.
• 39:52
Speaker 2: You'll have five, I think, Minnesota and some others, I think,
• 39:56
Speaker 2: in five or six states. Well, of course it is.
• 39:59
Speaker 2: But I mean, at what point do even his most
• 40:03
Speaker 2: hardcore supporters hear statements like that, which is obviously not true?
• 40:10
Speaker 2: I mean, there's no at what point do those people
• 40:12
Speaker 2: that are still and I'm not talking about average. I'm
• 40:15
Speaker 2: talking about people that are still hardcore Trump supporters, even
• 40:19
Speaker 2: if they say, look, I don't like everything he does,
• 40:21
Speaker 2: I don't like everything he says, but he's a good president.
• 40:24
Speaker 7: Okay, I get that.
• 40:25
Speaker 2: But when more and more of these statements come out
• 40:27
Speaker 2: ahead of the November 3rd elections, which is going to
• 40:30
Speaker 2: be a bloodbath, I mean, at what point did they
• 40:33
Speaker 2: just back onto, okay, that's a bridge too far.
• 40:36
Speaker 6: Our search in life is for the truth. And no
• 40:43
Speaker 6: matter where it's on this show, We're in a 12-step meeting.
• 40:48
Speaker 6: We're in church. I was watching Bishop Patterson this morning
• 40:51
Speaker 6: at 2 o'clock in the morning, and I got me
• 40:56
Speaker 6: a big print Bible just so I could read it,
• 40:59
Speaker 6: and I'm following along with what he's reading. And we're
• 41:03
Speaker 6: searching for the truth. What's the truth? And there are people,
• 41:09
Speaker 6: a big amount of people in our society here, And
• 41:13
Speaker 6: they look at Donald Trump, and they see the truth.
• 41:17
Speaker 6: You and I don't see it that way. I certainly
• 41:21
Speaker 6: never have. I saw it early. In 2016, I was
• 41:26
Speaker 6: mayor of Charleston, and I was a Republican. I said, uh-uh.
• 41:31
Speaker 6: I knew this wasn't going to be good. And so
• 41:38
Speaker 6: I got out of the Republican Party. And the reason
• 41:41
Speaker 6: I did that is because I was going to support
• 41:43
Speaker 6: Gary Johnson. You know, I feel like that's one of
• 41:47
Speaker 6: the best votes I ever made. He and Bill Weld
• 41:50
Speaker 6: would have made a good team to run this country.
• 41:53
Speaker 2: Text, I'm no supporter of Trump, but everyone knows he's
• 41:55
Speaker 2: being facetious when he says things like that. He's hyperbolic.
• 41:58
Speaker 2: People know that. I don't think so.
• 42:01
Speaker 6: You don't say that kind of stuff when you're president. Hmm.
• 42:05
Speaker 6: Nixon never said it. I mean, Reagan was good with jokes,
• 42:10
Speaker 6: but they were jokes. It's a ridiculous thing to say.
• 42:20
Speaker 6: It's just not, and there's no truth to it.
• 42:26
Speaker 2: Seriously, says the text, don't tell me that fascism is
• 42:28
Speaker 2: from the Trump administration, how these people lose their jobs afterwards.
• 42:31
Speaker 2: Look at Alyssa Slotkin just admitted that what she wants.
• 42:35
Speaker 2: I want to look at these signature cases, not just
• 42:37
Speaker 2: focus on the president, but the people who enabled him.
• 42:39
Speaker 2: I want people coming out of school to say, should
• 42:41
Speaker 2: I go to work for the Trump administration? Like, that
• 42:44
Speaker 2: sounds fun. I might get an opportunity. Wanting to be like, Lord,
• 42:47
Speaker 2: that might be buying myself a ton of problems. Again,
• 42:51
Speaker 2: so on and so forth. I want that deterrence message.
• 42:55
Speaker 2: I just don't, and I appreciate all the textures we
• 42:57
Speaker 2: get to the show, but I just don't, I cannot
• 43:01
Speaker 2: agree with the previous text when they said he's being facetious.
• 43:05
Speaker 6: He's not being facetious.
• 43:06
Speaker 2: The point is, even if he is, a lot of
• 43:08
Speaker 2: people aren't in on the joke, Danny. They're not in
• 43:12
  Speaker 2: on the joke.
• 43:13
Speaker 6: You don't say stuff like that.
• 43:15
Speaker 2: I mean, you mentioned Reagan. You mentioned who had a
• 43:18
Speaker 2: fantastic sense of humor. Bill Clinton. I mean, hell, Joe
• 43:22
Speaker 2: Biden didn't know what he was saying half the time,
• 43:23
Speaker 2: so we'll disqualify him.
• 43:25
  Speaker 7: But the others.
• 43:27
Speaker 2: I mean, they didn't do that.
• 43:28
Speaker 6: You think President Bush, either one, would have said anything?
• 43:32
  Speaker 6: Or Jimmy Carter.
• 43:33
Speaker 2: I mean, because I'm saying all this because it is
• 43:36
Speaker 2: not a party thing with me. It could be Republican
• 43:39
Speaker 2: or it could be Democrat. Tech says, okay, I'm not
• 43:44
Speaker 2: reading that. 951, Trick or Beat with 107.3 The Beat

Speaker 2: America's largest injury law firm. I got a couple things
• 45:45
Speaker 2: local I want to talk to you about, Danny, but
• 45:47
Speaker 2: you have a text here.
• 45:47
Speaker 1: It says, good morning.
• 45:48
Speaker 2: Ask Danny if he has any Elvis stories to share
• 45:51
Speaker 2: since Elvis stayed at the Daniel Boone Hotel.
• 45:54
Speaker 6: No, he went up the back elevator. By that time,
• 45:59
Speaker 6: I had number eight. And that was in June of 75.
• 46:05
Speaker 2: I was going to say, I think based on what
• 46:07
  Speaker 2: I've read, it was 1975.
• 46:09
Speaker 7: I might be wrong.
• 46:10
Speaker 6: It was June. It was the biggest night I've ever
• 46:13
Speaker 6: had at number eight.
• 46:15
Speaker 2: But you never saw Elvis?
• 46:17
  Speaker 10: No.
• 46:18
  Speaker 6: No, I never.
• 46:19
Speaker 2: I don't think Elvis would want to see you in 1975.
• 46:22
Speaker 6: Well, I would have liked to have gone, but no.
• 46:26
Speaker 6: He was, you know, he was my hero. I mean, look,
• 46:30
Speaker 6: I was born in 1950. So I'd go down in
• 46:34
Speaker 6: our basement and play his records and dance.
• 46:38
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 46:38
Speaker 6: You know, and nobody would be watching, you know.
• 46:43
Speaker 2: Let me get this in here quickly. The Dave Allen

• 47:05
Speaker 2: tickets in advance at dirtybirdsbaseball.com. Danny, as former mayor of Charleston,
• 47:10
Speaker 2: two things have been in the news a lot. The
• 47:11
Speaker 2: town center and now what is formerly known, I've been joking,
• 47:15
Speaker 2: the Prince reference here, the artist formerly known as the
• 47:17
Speaker 2: Coliseum and Convention Center, Of course, people are still going
• 47:21
Speaker 2: to refer to it as the Civic Center, but now
• 47:23
Speaker 2: it's the Vandalia Health Center.
• 47:24
Speaker 6: I think it's incredible. I think it is incredible. What
• 47:29
  Speaker 6: a coup. A million bucks a year?
• 47:32
  Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah.
• 47:35
  Speaker 6: Congratulations, Mayor Goodwin.
• 47:37
Speaker 2: And the operation of the Civic Center, Coliseum Convention Center,
• 47:42
Speaker 2: now will operate in the black, which it hasn't done
• 47:45
Speaker 2: from what I understand.
• 47:46
Speaker 6: It's never, never, not since it was built, since it
• 47:50
Speaker 6: was a field house.
• 47:52
Speaker 2: So if you were mayor and someone reached out to you,
• 47:57
Speaker 2: you'd be all for it?
• 47:59
Speaker 6: Oh, it wasn't even close. We had a company come
• 48:03
Speaker 6: in probably 15 or 20, no, about 20 years ago.
• 48:08
Speaker 6: And they said it was worth $ 600, 000 a year. And
• 48:14
Speaker 6: we couldn't get anybody to come close to that.
• 48:16
  Speaker 5: Right.
• 48:17
Speaker 6: And I think it's incredible. I was so delighted about
• 48:24
  Speaker 6: about this.
• 48:25
Speaker 2: Well, I mean, a lot of people didn't like the name,
• 48:28
Speaker 2: you know, but it's called the Vandalia Health Center. And
• 48:31
Speaker 2: this I'm sorry, but you're going to miss me with
• 48:32
Speaker 2: this argument that people are going to think it's a hospital.
• 48:34
Speaker 2: People don't go by Goldmark Ballpark and try to get gas.
• 48:37
Speaker 6: You know, that's right.
• 48:38
Speaker 2: It's I mean, I think people are smarter than are
• 48:40
Speaker 2: at the town center.
• 48:41
  Speaker 7: It's.
• 48:42
Speaker 2: The problems with the town center are, you know.
• 48:44
Speaker 6: No, I think the guy... I think it was pure sabotage.
• 48:49
Speaker 6: And I think it has been since the beginning. You
• 48:53
Speaker 6: could have kept some people in there. I would have kept...
• 48:57
Speaker 6: You know what? When Tidewater and that place at the
• 49:00
Speaker 6: other end, when they were going to move out, I'd
• 49:03
Speaker 6: either cut their rent in half or give them a
• 49:05
Speaker 6: few months free. Let them pay the insurance and the...
• 49:11
Speaker 6: the utilities. But it's ridiculous. I mean.
• 49:17
Speaker 2: When you were mayor, the town center was doing okay, though.
• 49:19
  Speaker 1: Pretty much, right?
• 49:20
  Speaker 6: And I'm not.
• 49:21
Speaker 2: Please don't read that wrong. I'm not blaming the Goodwin administration.
• 49:24
Speaker 2: I'm just talking about the timeline.
• 49:26
Speaker 6: When it changed, I'll tell you when it changed.
• 49:27
Speaker 2: Okay, that's what I was getting at.
• 49:29
Speaker 6: When it changed, first thing, they barred $ 100 million against
• 49:33
Speaker 6: it in 2007. In 2013, I went down there at
• 49:42
Speaker 6: 4 o'clock in the morning, and it was packed. And
• 49:48
Speaker 6: I'm a Starbucks guy, so I was sitting there drinking coffee,
• 49:51
Speaker 6: and people coming up to me, and I like that. 2014,
• 49:59
Speaker 6: slow walking and sad singing. It started to go down.
• 50:03
  Speaker 7: And then.
• 50:09
Speaker 6: The thing about it is, is that the people from
• 50:13
Speaker 6: Forest City, that $ 100 million, they paid all seven of it.
• 50:21
Speaker 6: They walked out on $ 93 million in debt. You know,
• 50:25
Speaker 6: I got no use for those people. I mean, they
• 50:29
Speaker 6: didn't use the money from there to make it.
• 50:35
Speaker 2: People have often said, and I've been one of them,
• 50:37
Speaker 2: they said with the town center, Danny, they've said, well,
• 50:40
Speaker 2: there are other malls that are doing great, which is true,
• 50:42
Speaker 2: but not with that model, not with a downtown where
• 50:45
Speaker 2: you pay for parking. That was a big model at
• 50:48
Speaker 2: one time. None of those are, you can't compare the
• 50:50
Speaker 2: Huntington mall to what the town centers, because there are
• 50:52
Speaker 2: two totally different models. Plus with the Huntington mall, you've
• 50:55
Speaker 2: got everything out around it.
• 50:57
Speaker 6: I think that, I think paying for parking is the,
• 51:02
Speaker 6: was the biggest problem because you, you, you don't have
• 51:06
Speaker 6: to pay the, For parking to go to those other places.
• 51:10
Speaker 6: But the mall, and David, if you look at my
• 51:13
Speaker 6: Facebook page and go down a few, not very many,
• 51:17
Speaker 6: one or two, and if you can tell, there's a
• 51:20
Speaker 6: YouTube of when the mall opened.
• 51:24
Speaker 2: I've seen it. I've seen it, yeah.
• 51:25
Speaker 6: And Mayor Rourke and Governor Rockefeller, and they spoke, and
• 51:33
Speaker 6: the mall was exciting.
• 51:34
  Speaker 13: Oh, yeah.
• 51:35
  Speaker 11: Yeah.
• 51:36
Speaker 6: But now you have a lot of people downtown then.
• 51:38
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a big difference as well. Danny, it's always
• 51:41
Speaker 2: a pleasure. Are you heading back to California?
• 51:43
Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm heading back on Thursday.
• 51:46
Speaker 2: So we'll talk to you the next couple of weeks,
• 51:47
  Speaker 2: I understand.
• 51:48
  Speaker 6: On the phone.
• 51:49
  Speaker 3: All right.
• 51:50
Speaker 2: Danny Jones, always a pleasure to have you here.
• 51:51
  Speaker 6: T.J.
• 51:52
Speaker 2: Meadows coming up with Talk Line and many of these
• 51:53
Speaker 2: same Metro News stations, including this one. What you got, buddy?
• 51:56
Speaker 8: News of the passing of Ike Morris breaking this morning.
• 51:59
Speaker 8: We'll talk with President Emeritus of the West Virginia Oil
• 52:02
Speaker 8: and Gas Association, Charlie Byrd, relive Ike's life, what he
• 52:06
Speaker 8: meant to the industry. Talk about permitting reform with API
• 52:10
Speaker 8: as well. Brad McElhenney with the latest news, that and more.
• 52:13
Speaker 2: All right. And I will see you later today on Midday.
• 52:15
Speaker 2: Thank you so much, Ryan. Until then, have fun and
• 52:17
  Speaker 2: love somebody.
• 52:33
