- 0:02Today we're going to be presenting to you, a Twitter
- 0:05spaces, talk with Elon Musk where he discusses the latest
- 0:10updates for the Starship, super heavy program after the launch
- 0:14attempt than happened on for 20 of this year.
- 0:17And there are some very good Insight from Elan himself in
- 0:21this episode. So, please sit back and relax

- 0:39Hey Irene Hey Lon. It's been like that it has that
- 0:46was very exciting to be in Boca Chica.
- 0:49You always live up to your promises about exciting times
- 0:53and SpaceX Yes. Punctuality is not my strong
- 0:57suit, but I do deliver in the end.
- 0:59Yes, you do excitement was guaranteed and it was delivered,
- 1:05exactly. Yeah, we just get right into it
- 1:08at. So I think probably people have
- 1:11enough time to get on or hopefully hopefully yeah, as it
- 1:16basically the outcome was roughly in the sort of what I
- 1:21expected and maybe slightly exceeded my expectations.
- 1:25Roughly what I expected which was or all hoped for I should
- 1:28say which is that we would get clear of the pad with minimal
- 1:32damage the pad and I'm glad to report that the pat damage is
- 1:36actually quite small. And looks like if you were quiet
- 1:39repaired quickly and that we would also get significant
- 1:43in-flight data. Particularly, with respect to
- 1:46the pressurizing of the tanks, with the propellant liquid,
- 1:51which is called, which hajin has pressurization as opposed to
- 1:55say, A falcon 9 which uses a helium.
- 1:57Pressurization. But helium isn't very short
- 2:00supply and extremely expensive. It's way better to, or, to
- 2:04essentially pressurized with the liquid form of the oxidizer and
- 2:07fuel. So that that actually quite
- 2:09good. And we also went supersonic
- 2:12which is that was no problem at all.
- 2:14And he, so I'm going through obviously some good news items
- 2:17here. The vehicle.
- 2:19Structural margins appear to be better than we expected.
- 2:23As you can tell by the fact that the vehicle is actually I'm
- 2:25doing somersaults towards the end and still staying intact.
- 2:30So that's also good. And yeah, so I will actually
- 2:34feel like that was a great flight at SpaceX team did.
- 2:37Excellent work. We made a lot of progress and I
- 2:40think for a technique from a broadcast standpoint and Pad
- 2:45standpoint, we are probably ready to launch in six to eight
- 2:51weeks. The longest, the item that is
- 2:54probably requalification of the flight termination system.
- 2:59Because we did initiate the fight termination system, but it
- 3:02was not enough to it took way too long to rupture the tanks.
- 3:07So we need a basically a much we need more detonation cord to
- 3:13unzip the tanks at altitude and ensure that they basically the
- 3:18rocket explodes immediately. If there's an a if I
- 3:22termination, is this necessary. So requalification of the is I'm
- 3:26just guessing here that recalled cake of the Much longer
- 3:29detonation cord to tons of the rocket in a bad situation is
- 3:35probably the long lead item. What was the time lag?
- 3:42It was pretty long, I think it was on the order of 40 seconds
- 3:45ish. So quite long.
- 3:48The yeah. So Now, it's the rocket was in a
- 3:54relatively low air density situation.
- 3:57So the aerodynamic forces that I was experiencing were, will be
- 3:59less than if it was at a lower lower down in the atmosphere.
- 4:03And so that are now forces would have included, I think low point
- 4:07the atmosphere aided in the destruction of the vehicle.
- 4:10And in fact that that's what happened.
- 4:11When the vehicle got to load off altitude, the atmospheric
- 4:15density was enough to cause structural failure, but this is
- 4:19obviously something that we want to make suture.
- 4:21Aerosol it before proceeding with next flight.
- 4:24Let's see, I'll go through a bunch of notables so we we
- 4:28actually at liftoff there were three engines that we didn't, we
- 4:32chose not to start essentially, the oh, that hit aborts that.
- 4:36And so we actually looked at off with 30 engines, which is the
- 4:39minimum number of engines those interested or explode.
- 4:42But they were just the system. Didn't think they were healthy
- 4:44enough to bring them to a full thrust so they were shut down.
- 4:49Then at t, plus 27 seconds and 219 lost Communications
- 4:54Concurrent with some kind of energetic event that liberated.
- 4:58The outer heat shield from the e engines 17, 18, 19 and 20 area.
- 5:05You can see this on video actually and by the way, if
- 5:08people have like, basically think that maybe something
- 5:10different from this occurred that would be interesting too.
- 5:12Because I know people, some people have looked very closely
- 5:14frame-by-frame at video but this is the SpaceX best assessment
- 5:18after a week anyway. So something bad happened at t
- 5:22plus 27 seconds because engine 19 law school Communications and
- 5:26some kind of explosion happened to knock out the heat shields of
- 5:30engines. So much pain, 18, 19 or 20 and
- 5:33yeah. And the possible fire scene from
- 5:35The Afghan starting after this event and continuing through
- 5:38flight. The rocket kept going, though,
- 5:40for at T plus 62 seconds, we see additional after heat shield
- 5:45damage and your engine 30, however, the engine continues to
- 5:49run and then at TA 5 seconds is worth Things really hit the fan.
- 5:56We see engine 6 will last the communication to thrust vector
- 5:59control and roughly. At, from this point onwards, we
- 6:02lose thrust vector control of the rocket.
- 6:04So we lose steering at t. Plus 85 seconds, was that engine
- 6:086 that kept trying to relight to Possibly I was like I don't know
- 6:15was there one that one looks like and footage like it just
- 6:18kept attempting to relight relay relay over and over which is
- 6:21pretty wild to see. I don't think I've ever seen
- 6:23that before and it was one of the center ish engines.
- 6:29That's her saying. Okay, we do have relight logic
- 6:32in the center engines but not in the outer engines, I believe.
- 6:36So the third basically at Landing engines have relied
- 6:39Logic. The perimeter engines don't set
- 6:42that isn't, that's entirely possible.
- 6:43Although if the engine is detecting significant issues
- 6:47that should not be going into a tree light cycle yeah what's
- 6:51your best guess as to what caused the initial engine issues
- 6:56and then I guess it, cascaded a After that.
- 6:59But what do you think happened? It's I think we don't know with
- 7:05certainty. Obviously, the rocket stayed on
- 7:07the launch pad for a while and we did generate quite the rock,
- 7:11tornado at the base of the vehicle and at our first guest
- 7:14would have been that The Rock tornado would have caused the
- 7:17significantly significant damage to the engines but at least we
- 7:22don't we do actually do not see obvious.
- 7:24We actually do, weirdly do not see evidence of the rock
- 7:28tornado. Actually damaging engines or
- 7:31heat shields in a material way. It may happen.
- 7:33We have not yet seen evidence that for the next flight we
- 7:36certainly will be taking off faster.
- 7:38So this for this flight, weird on the side of babying, the
- 7:42engines and just gently starting each engine, one at a time.
- 7:46And they're quite the engines on Brewster seven were built over a
- 7:50long period of time. So, each Anton was a little bit
- 7:52of a unique item and whereas the engines on Brewster line which
- 7:58is next are much newer and more consistent.
- 8:01And really with With significant reliability improvements over
- 8:04booster 7. So I think we'll see you a much
- 8:08more robust to engine situation with rooster 9.
- 8:11The heat shield won't Orchard should say the shields which are
- 8:14both force and heat shields around the engines for booster 9
- 8:20are much better because they were retrofitted for Brewster
- 8:24seven year, we record heat shields whereas mr.
- 8:27Is designed in so the Riveter much stouter.
- 8:31Will you be doing something with the Raptor?
- 8:33Chill system on the on booster 9 differently than what you did
- 8:36with seven? It seems like that was like an
- 8:40Expendable part of the pad, essentially, with having all of
- 8:43those hoses, rip free. I'm guessing that's something
- 8:45you would like to avoid having to replace every time in the
- 8:48future. Yeah, over time, we're
- 8:51definitely needs to be like a rabbit reflect capability, so
- 8:55they can't be any external items over time.
- 8:57It was actually just good to get this vehicle off the ground
- 9:00because we've made so many improvements in the booster.
- 9:03And I know beyond that it really really just need to fly this
- 9:07vehicle and then move on to the much improved.
- 9:10Rooster nine and later ship designs.
- 9:13But so thing we want to ensure of probably most with the next
- 9:19Inflight is that we do not have that any kind of central Nexus
- 9:24that controls that affects multiple engines is extremely
- 9:27robust and with extra shielding so that that we don't have a
- 9:33sort of a single point that can take out multiple engines.
- 9:35And for sure, we don't want a single point, they can take out
- 9:38the thrust vector control which is entrance during the range of
- 9:43detail. We guarantee our is like level 9
- 9:45rocket was a tree all the way to how rockets work.
- 9:49Understood, can I try again? How do I have?
- 9:51I can confirm that we have all been doing a massive amount of
- 9:55speculation out here. And I guess one of the big
- 9:59points that a lot of us have been wondering, is related to
- 10:02Stage separation. So, I guess, the two part
- 10:04question, like, what actually triggers second stage, ignition?
- 10:09And also the second part of that question did ship 24 attempt to
- 10:14light its engines after the destruction of booster 7.
- 10:19No, it did not when they termination is executed, its
- 10:24executor on both, so the ship currently does not attempt to
- 10:27save itself. Arguably, maybe two.
- 10:31That's good point. Yeah, it's crazy.
- 10:32And looks like the engines lit after the booster, like, go, and
- 10:37after the booster finally blew up, like there's what looks
- 10:39like, A combination of it.
- 10:56But but like the, so the very things that are like important
- 11:01for the next flight are ensuring that thrust vector control.
- 11:04We don't lose the rocket thrust vector control.
- 11:06So isolation with respect to control, which with the booster
- 11:09nine is a lot easier because we use electric motors to steer the
- 11:14engines as opposed to hydraulic actuators where you've got a
- 11:19common manifold between the hydraulic actuators.
- 11:21So if you lose hydraulic pressure, if I can It's you can
- 11:24look, there's multiple engines especially if you have some kind
- 11:28of failure in the hydraulic system, the electric actuator to
- 11:31engines will be much more isolated and not have the single
- 11:34event failure. As long as they did not lose
- 11:37power or comes along since you've gone ahead and excavated
- 11:41your your launch mount a bit, I assume you're gonna go ahead and
- 11:44put in that the steel grid and the word they lose.
- 11:47Do you think that will fully address the issue of the wider
- 11:51than expected? Debris field?
- 11:52And are you expecting any? A pushback from environmental
- 11:56and kind of community groups that this, that this event did
- 12:00put debris where it wasn't expected.
- 12:04Yeah, the we're going to be putting down a lot of Steel.
- 12:07The debris is really just basically sand and rock, so,
- 12:10it's often they're not toxic at all or anything.
- 12:12It's just like a sandstorm. Essentially, basically a
- 12:15human-made set Stan storm, but we don't want to do that again.
- 12:19We were very putting down a, a very strong steel.
- 12:24Sandwich that is basically a water jacketed sandwich, that's
- 12:27two layers of thick, very thick plate steel that a better.
- 12:30Also perforated on the upper side so that you have, but what
- 12:33is basically a massive super-strong steel shower, head
- 12:38pointing up and then the water pressure has coming out of
- 12:42there, has to exceed the pressure for the engines.
- 12:45Thrust is exerting on the steel plate on the vehicle or Stan,
- 12:49but, which is is all doable, and Ed being done and so it should
- 12:52be much less Dusty. And we should not have a rock
- 12:55tornado with the next flight. Hey Ilan, it's Joey from
- 12:59Reuters. Why couldn't you install that
- 13:01before this launch, was that a technical reason or a regulatory
- 13:04reason that it wasn't ready to do stuff like we expected, we'd
- 13:08expected to dig a hole. We would not have Teflon.
- 13:12So the reason we would not expect to excavate a whole,
- 13:16we've done a static fire of the booster and that that had just
- 13:22result in You're fairly modest erosion of the high strength
- 13:27concrete at the base of just called found a gets a sort of
- 13:30special, but basically the strongest highest temperature
- 13:34form of concrete that you can get steel-reinforced everything.
- 13:37And so if we thought it would be fine for one launch, we would
- 13:41erode some amount of the concrete but that it would be
- 13:44fine. We certainly didn't expect to
- 13:46effectively what it looks like when we were enough to full
- 13:49thrust, probably shattered the concrete, so Is it possible that
- 13:54the base layer failed first and not the actual van dijk layer on
- 13:57top. It is, we are getting into some
- 14:00amount of speculation here but it's one of the aspirations.
- 14:04And one of the more probable explanations is that when we ran
- 14:08up to full thrust that the that we may have, compressed, the
- 14:12sand underneath the concrete to such a degree that the concrete
- 14:16perfectly bent and then cracked. That's it.
- 14:19That is a leading theory. But as we definitely want to do
- 14:22not have the gain and and I was never a long time ago, we
- 14:25thought it would just be fine for one launched.
- 14:26We were owed some on Deck just as we did with the booster,
- 14:30static fire. And and then for the next
- 14:32launch, we're going to put in the deal.
- 14:35Mega steel pancake, this thing's a beast.
- 14:37That is why the steel pancake over like a flame trench or
- 14:41something like that. You can do it either way but the
- 14:47and that's just from schools of thought there.
- 14:49The important thing is that you have a regenerative Lee cooled,
- 14:52like wherever the flame is hitting that your that that is
- 14:55regenerative lie and evaporatively cooled.
- 14:59So, what you'll see is that how to make Steam Cloud, but not a
- 15:02dust cloud so that we, you know, we're friends, some both ways,
- 15:07you could do it both ways. But and I both work, the
- 15:10acoustic environment is worse with a flat face.
- 15:12So, as you might imagine, but the payload is so far up in the
- 15:17payload 400 feet away from where the plane from, where the plume
- 15:20is impinging. So, it's so far away that the
- 15:23Acoustics are not actually, not that bad and the payload
- 15:25fairing, so we're not have to worry too much about it being
- 15:29too loud in the payload Fairing and so it can be done either
- 15:32way, but this is one way and we were pretty confident, this will
- 15:36work and we're going to extend the steel Beyond just underneath
- 15:40the rocket. It because you want to make sure
- 15:43we don't take up concrete elsewhere.
- 15:46And and then it get, we're going to connect the load of the
- 15:51massive steel sandwich underneath launch pad into the
- 15:55launch found legs. So it can take that load in
- 16:00tension, as well as a compression.
- 16:04So I don't know if that's a true Pro pretty good about that.
- 16:06You'll see it come together next author.
- 16:08So but like say that that actually we're it is not
- 16:12currently appear to be what prevented the rocket from
- 16:16getting closer than it did. There was obviously a caps a
- 16:21flame path somewhere within the vehicle structure that As some
- 16:27of the engines failed there, maybe it would appear to be a
- 16:31foot like a flame path to a piece of avionics or control
- 16:35system that knocked out the thrust vector control.
- 16:40Once you knock out thrust vector control, the rocket no longer
- 16:42has serious during Authority. What things do you think went
- 16:47better than you expected, and what things went worse than you
- 16:50expected? It was pretty close to what I
- 17:01expected at least in this. And those for this fight was
- 17:03pretty close to what I expected getting past.
- 17:05My excuse was a pretty big deal. I was actually quite shocked.
- 17:09I don't know why I had that whole the fins in the flaps up
- 17:13front and all that stuff especially starting to lose
- 17:15Control Authority, with TVC going out.
- 17:17That was pretty impressive. Thing, just kept chugging along
- 17:20and punching right through. So that was my big one.
- 17:23If it made it through Max Q, I was gonna consider that a pretty
- 17:25big milestone for sure. Yeah, definitely, that's for
- 17:29sure. An important Milestone and it
- 17:31got pretty close to Stage separation.
- 17:33If we had maintained thrust vector control and throttled up,
- 17:37which we should have, because we needed to compensate greed, lust
- 17:40too many engines, so we need to read which of the throne, but
- 17:44the remaining engines to make up for the missing ones.
- 17:47But if we don't lost, if we're thrown off their many engines
- 17:49and maintain thrust vector control, we would have made it
- 17:51to staging which would be cool. Yes, that that's our goal for
- 17:54the next flight is make it to staging.
- 17:58Hopefully 16 and staging and get get older.
- 18:02So everybody started going to orbit with the next?
- 18:04Why did the my booster command separation?
- 18:06Get it actually try letting go of Starship and it just couldn't
- 18:10because of something or did not even get that far in the
- 18:14program. Now, at first, they did not get
- 18:17to the point where it would do separation.
- 18:20And I want one could argue that at the point, which the booster
- 18:23is kaput. The ship may as well just take
- 18:26off and keep going. But the problem is that we have
- 18:30a very precise targeted entry point in the Pacific.
- 18:34The ship really wouldn't have the Delta plastic the capability
- 18:38of reaching that Target points. Are you are?
- 18:40So even if you wouldn't want it re-entry over Africa or
- 18:43something and then just just touching down randomly.
- 18:46Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
- 18:48So it's with it would only be worth really starting to show up
- 18:52if the ship is able to complete a submission and reaches
- 18:56targeted Landing point, just the west of Hawaii.
- 19:00Ilan, would you change the flight profile all?
- 19:03And what would you have to do to actually reach orbit?
- 19:06As opposed to the 146 miles? That this one, seems like that
- 19:10would have been the max altitude?
- 19:14Yeah, yeah. So it's mostly about velocity
- 19:16that rather than elf to, but I'd said, I think we've got a better
- 19:19than 30% chance of reaching Orbit on the next line.
- 19:23So, I'd say that my expectation for the next flight would be
- 19:29more likely to reach over tonight.
- 19:32And are you actually in with are you going to be attempting orbit
- 19:34or like doing the same profile of re-entering over Hawaii?
- 19:37And that whole thing? Yeah, we're just going to do
- 19:40repeat. Basically the goal of these
- 19:41early missions is just information going to have any
- 19:44payload or anything. It's let's try to learn as much
- 19:46as possible and that's a and that's why we consider this to
- 19:50be a success because since the goal of the flight was to learn
- 19:54a lot and we learned a lot, I would characterize it as a
- 19:56success, obviously not complete success but still no less
- 19:59successful. And I always want to frame this
- 20:02the difficulty of this with respect to the sort of Soviet
- 20:06Union Warsaw Pact rocket developments of the past, for
- 20:10which I have a lot of respect. But back in Russia and Ukraine
- 20:13are working together. They made great.
- 20:15I did great stuff in space after I say yeah maybe wonder they can
- 20:20respond to that but much more productive.
- 20:23Like the N1 program is always worth always recommend people
- 20:26read the history of the Soviet and one program which was the
- 20:30competitor. Rocket to the Saturn 5, Euro
- 20:33certified Moon rocket. And that's, that's a point
- 20:37you're talking about late 60s early 70s where the Soviets were
- 20:40really at their a game. They were just really fantastic.
- 20:44They said they had a plus players that it's fair to say
- 20:48that their motivation was maximized.
- 20:50Success means, you are hero of the Soviet Union.
- 20:52Failure of you're probably going to the gulag so a plus players
- 20:58maximum motivation and so The N1 failed at every solve it so that
- 21:05those are that's the team for one.
- 21:07We really have to have a tremendous respect for the end
- 21:09one team and they did not succeed so and it didn't help
- 21:12that glushko never wanted that thing.
- 21:13Any way you wanted it, he wanted his own Mega rocket.
- 21:17Then, what score, Leo, Carrillo have died.
- 21:19It was game over for that poor thing.
- 21:24So the storage unit, certainly suffered a massive lost with
- 21:27Karlov dying. He was there for brown
- 21:29basically. So That for a car, that was
- 21:32awesome. It's like losing your best
- 21:33player at the worst time, really?
- 21:35But nonetheless, it's there was so many super smart people in
- 21:38that program and they're really know what they're doing with
- 21:41rockets and maximum motivation. I do not succeed.
- 21:43So it just always bearing that in the N1 is the closest to
- 21:47Starship of any rocket that's flown.
- 21:50And I thought shop is actually a bit more risky in some ways and
- 21:53that we've got a cryogenic fuel and think about a cryogenic
- 21:56fuel. Is it can gasify and form fuel
- 22:00oxygen pockets. And that kind of thing, it's
- 22:01always harder to deal with the gas with a cryogenic fuel.
- 22:04Then with a fuel that is liquid at room temperature kerosene,
- 22:07basically. Rocket grade jet fuel is, which
- 22:12is what Falcon and the anyone used.
- 22:15So they've got real risk in that respect.
- 22:17We're running at a higher chamber pressure engine that's
- 22:19full flow stage combustion so it's the most complex and
- 22:22difficult engine configuration. But the one with the highest
- 22:25efficiency and we're using autogenous pressurization, which
- 22:29I don't think they did and I feel so those are things and
- 22:33I'll steer our scale is also bigger.
- 22:34We're about twice the mass and about.
- 22:37So I think 60% Will thrust in an N 1.
- 22:41So if you don't mind me asking here, why do you think Starship
- 22:44will succeed using a similar? Even not just the multi-engine
- 22:48Clause if you're anything like that.
- 22:49But just even though General like test by flying philosophy
- 22:54of the N1, why do you think there's four flights?
- 22:56The N1 never made it to Stage separation.
- 22:57Why do you think Starship will succeed in a with all the
- 23:00comparisons that are similar to it?
- 23:05We do have a production line that if it takes those ten
- 23:08flights will do it, they would eventually have succeeded with
- 23:10the anyone. They just decided that it was
- 23:12too expensive to continue and they want to do other things.
- 23:15So after they had those failures they and I guess it's probably
- 23:18pretty embarrassing. Our national level, but I do
- 23:22think that the Starship resign, if you've got a, you've got a
- 23:26rocket with light engines as we do, if you have extremely good
- 23:29engine isolation so that if an engine fails, it does not cause
- 23:34The failure of neighboring engine or the stage itself, you
- 23:37have a very robust design because then you lose one of 33
- 23:41engines. That's a three percent thrust
- 23:43lost. It's not a big deal, but if you
- 23:45do not have good energy and isolation and an engine failure.
- 23:49Can Domino to other engines or two parts of the stage?
- 23:53Then you have an extremely unreliable design so that's why
- 23:56with with recruiters haven't, but especially booster 9, we're
- 24:00gone to so much trouble to isolate the engines.
- 24:04And so if one engine goes wrong, it does not knock out other
- 24:07engines or damage the rest of the stage.
- 24:10Yeah, so I think it's when all is said and done.
- 24:13This will be an extremely reliable provide, that you.
- 24:16It's absolutely fundamental to achieve Edge isolation.
- 24:19Hey, Alana to expect hls to be Starship.
- 24:22Hls to be the long pole for our team is 3.
- 24:27No, definitely don't. I think we will be will be.
- 24:33The first thing to be really be, I think we'll know.
- 24:36I think will be the that we will not be a limiting factor at all
- 24:43you on. How much do you expect to spend
- 24:46in this kind of prototype development phase?
- 24:48Before one of these Starships actually starts flying real
- 24:51payloads other and starlink or otherwise and how many kind of
- 24:54tests are you targeting before that?
- 24:58I hope all we can get. For flight to out the Seer,
- 25:03maybe five and we should be. I would be surprised if we exit
- 25:08this here without getting to orbit.
- 25:12I'd say it's not 100, it's not hard.
- 25:13Said probably. I think we probably got an 80%
- 25:16probability of reaching orbit this year and pretty and I don't
- 25:20want to tempt fate. You're not going to work but I
- 25:22think close to 100% chance of reaching orbit within 12 months
- 25:27Thank you very much like it's Basics, actually quite good at
- 25:29production so we do like extremely like the best in
- 25:32history of any rocket made from with production.
- 25:35We're making a falcon 9 upper stage which is a large complex
- 25:41machine every three or four days.
- 25:44And around there every day right now.
- 25:47Yes, we're capable of. We're actually slowed it down
- 25:49slightly because we've got more Raptors than we know what to do
- 25:51with. So we're actually focusing but
- 25:53more on the rafter side on upgrades, mostly to improve
- 25:57reliability and robustness of the engine.
- 26:00They some performance improvements as well and the
- 26:02cost of all this like how much do you expect to spend on all
- 26:05that either this year or before you start flying real payloads?
- 26:12Probably. Be a couple billion dollars this
- 26:16year, two billion dollars ish. well, then on Sasha and there's
- 26:23kind of a struggle by other companies to raise funds lately,
- 26:27for a number of reasons in SpaceX is usually didn't
- 26:29insulated from that. But do you see any kind of
- 26:31difference, nowadays is SpaceX kind of thinking about
- 26:34fundraising differently, and it does that affect how the
- 26:37pressure on this Starship program at all?
- 26:40We do not anticipate needing to raise funny.
- 26:45We think we're we don't think we need to raise funding will do a
- 26:48status thing where we provide liquidity to employees who are
- 26:51in stock, but that's my knowledge, we do not need to
- 26:54raise incremental funding for SpaceX.

- 27:07get a be fun to get some new people in here, John Cross and I
- 27:10haven't said anything yet and it also Mary Liz.
- 27:12So John I saw you start to speak there for a second.
- 27:15Yeah, I have a fun questions. The lean off the pad was that
- 27:18intentional was it more than you thought?
- 27:21It might be, was it related to the engines out and do you
- 27:24expect to do that on future more operational launches?
- 27:29No, we're not. We the it was related to the
- 27:31engines out and we do not normally expect to lean.
- 27:34It should be good. I asked for Ashley going
- 27:36straight up, there will be some debate as to because you can.
- 27:40So for the next fight we're going to start the engines
- 27:42faster and get off the pad faster.
- 27:44I think we're from started for engine start to actually moving
- 27:47was around 5 Seconds which is really a long time to be
- 27:50blasting the pad. We're going to try to get that
- 27:52down to about half that time, maybe two and a half seconds,
- 27:57start the engines faster and and then at throttle up faster and
- 28:00just get off the deck and dark black reduce how much we blast
- 28:02the pad and then there's a debate of do you keep the rocket
- 28:07over the pad which case you there's more cooking of the base
- 28:11or do you start you start moving sideways sooner if you move
- 28:15sideways sooner you are moving that big cutting torch across
- 28:19the launch room so you can think of a thing like the world's
- 28:22biggest cutting torch basically And so it like we have big steel
- 28:27plates over the top of launch ring.
- 28:29But I think, depending on how close the engines are they are,
- 28:32they are road that deal at a roughly in it.
- 28:35I think. Half an inch to an inch per
- 28:38second of high strength, high strength steel is eroded by The
- 28:43Cutting torch, so you don't be too.
- 28:46You want the entrance to be too close to the launch ring before
- 28:49you. You start moving sideways with
- 28:52it with the abyss doing that. What's the op?
- 28:54Yeah. And on this one as it did move
- 28:56across the launch ring because it needed out there sideways,
- 28:59did it towards the top of the laundering to batter did?
- 29:02I can't hold up pretty good. Actually held up surprisingly.
- 29:06Well, so we actually we're glad to see that there's appears to
- 29:08be minimal damage to the launch ring and to the components
- 29:12inside launch rank. So, that's great.
- 29:13Because that launch roaring is to take six months to build up a
- 29:18new launch ring. We have some spares, but that
- 29:21there's a lot of complex, Plumbing wiring inside launching
- 29:23and that Apache appears to be in good shape.
- 29:26Yeah, I just had one could question, speaking of that
- 29:29launch ring, like, liftoff conditions.
- 29:31Topic. Why couldn't you wait like a
- 29:33month to install that steel plate for it to be ready?
- 29:37My twin? Why launched before?
- 29:38That's ready? As I said, we did a static fire.
- 29:42Well, the booster with the concrete, the pond egg and we
- 29:45saw mod a manageable amount of erosion.
- 29:49We thought the launch would have increased erosion but would not
- 29:54smash the concrete. So weird.
- 29:56Not expectations, batch the concrete would not think I would
- 29:58agree with that that would occur based on the data.
- 30:00We saw from the static fire. If we thought that would occur,
- 30:03then we would have waited for this deal.
- 30:04The deal with was really meant not, it was, is intended to be
- 30:09have a launch pad that requires minimal the basically no
- 30:12refurbishment. That's the intent, the attached
- 30:16of the sort of water cools, the mega steel sandwich and was the
- 30:21communications blackout. The reason the staging event
- 30:24didn't happen or was it, because it Didn't get that point started
- 30:28tumbling before. Yeah, it just didn't get to what
- 30:32I would consider to be a safe point to do stage separation.
- 30:35Now, I should point out like stage.
- 30:37Separation itself is a dodgy thing, and many, a rocket in the
- 30:39past has as failed at stage separation, or putting a lot of
- 30:44attention on like said, I don't get too confident but I feel
- 30:48like it's really quite likely to get to Stage separation with the
- 30:53next flight. And so then we want to make sure
- 30:55that We actually execute the stage separation because it is
- 31:00different from Falcon. It's yeah.
- 31:02So that's we want to get through this stage.
- 31:05Separation light the ship and complete.
- 31:09What almost a full. Oh, but it's actually got the,
- 31:12the Delta plus C is almost identical to orbit, but so we
- 31:17actually could sell it to a decently good orbit, but we want
- 31:21it, we want to test the entry system of the show so to test
- 31:24the ship heat shield in the height, you so get to orbit and
- 31:27then ideally deal with with the ship.
- 31:29So we can test the how well the heat shield works for the ship
- 31:33or one of the vehicle. Yeah, let's grab one more Mary.

- 31:46I don't know how you felt in Mission Control.
- 31:48Maybe you were nervous and paying attention to data.
- 31:51But for the rest of us that have witnessed years and years of
- 31:55Falcon, launches and many other launches, I think it's safe to
- 31:59say that was the most epic launch of them all.
- 32:03And I hope you got a chance to really I enjoy it.
- 32:06I was actually wondering about that moment in the room with
- 32:09your team or maybe for you personally.
- 32:12Like, how did this compare to the other first that you've gone
- 32:16through in the Falcon program with hopper?
- 32:19Like, how did you feel? Yeah, no.
- 32:24I was very excited about the SpaceX team to amazing work and
- 32:28aren't this is really one of the hottest technical projects that
- 32:32Humanity has ever done. This yourself fully reusable
- 32:36humongous rocket fully, and rapidly, reusable reliable
- 32:40rocket, that of unusual size. But this is certainly a
- 32:46candidate for hardest. Technical problem done by
- 32:49humans. Yeah, look at little bit.
- 32:51So I think the teams And excellent work at one, a very
- 32:56hard problem. And I think we're actually I'm
- 33:00upbeat about the next 12 months. I think we're going to get to
- 33:03orbit and then the it'll probably take us a few more
- 33:06years to achieve reuse reuse ability on a regular basis where
- 33:10we bring the booster back and bring the ship back and where it
- 33:13gets that, you know, take a few years to get to where Falcon 9
- 33:15is today, where it is now quite normal for the rocket to land
- 33:20every word. If it doesn't land these days.
- 33:22So, it's in that Old. Yeah, it's crazy.
- 33:26Hitting the bullseye of a ship out in stormy weather at that,
- 33:30sugar is not. Anchored is literally trying to
- 33:31keep position. It's holding to a GPS position
- 33:34in. The rock is flying to that
- 33:35position until manages to hit the bullseye in a storm.
- 33:38Make it look you guys make it look so easy it's crazy every
- 33:42time to watch that happen. Yeah.
- 33:45Like that. It's a testament to the awesome
- 33:47team and it is wonderful. Sorry, I just had one more
- 33:52question. A lot of opposition from these
- 33:54environmental groups in the area over the debris and I just
- 33:57wanted to get your reaction to that since some didn't expect
- 34:01the debris to go as far as it seemed to go.
- 34:02And if there is a legal challenge in court, you know
- 34:05either against SpaceX or the effort, how would SpaceX respond
- 34:09and what would that do to the timeline?
- 34:12Yeah, I think if you stop for practical purposes, what was?
- 34:16I think? Like you, if you were to say
- 34:19like at this point, I look at it aerial picture of the area and
- 34:21apart from the area around launched and tell me where
- 34:24things are damaged. It's actually, I think can't
- 34:26even see it at this point. So the it's not like the rocket
- 34:30uses non-toxic propellants and so it just got a lot of dust,
- 34:34but it's the best of our knowledge.
- 34:37Like there is not been any meaningful damaged.
- 34:41Environment that we're aware of. And to be honest, I was out
- 34:43there at the pad, two days after there's a huge storm on Saturday
- 34:46like 70. 80 mile an hour winds, yeah, it was intense and like I
- 34:50saw more debris coming off the shore from like people's Ducks
- 34:54falling into the water and like capsized boats.
- 34:56If that's true I did anything more than just some bits of
- 34:59concrete which you know. Yeah yeah I mean to exceed the
- 35:04Damage Done by a hurricane is quite difficult, hurricanes
- 35:08nature, the power of nature is a man's compared to I will We are
- 35:11still feeble compared to the power of nature.
- 35:13Little tiny miniature. Hurricane Really tiny like I
- 35:16look at Sasha pin slide. It seems so big to us humans,
- 35:19but if you zoomed out and we're looking at Earth from a
- 35:21distance, you wouldn't even see Starship it real I can't I think
- 35:24I see a tiny little dot jumping off the surface.
- 35:27Maybe yeah. It's like we're like microbes
- 35:30trying to get from one dust mode to another dust mode.
- 35:33Did you see the village of them by the way, like pad footage of
- 35:36how like dark and crazy? It got it.
- 35:39It does, it's crazy cause it looks so violent and wild.
- 35:42It looks like a miniature tornado just for a minute. there
- 35:45but at some of the footage is actually terrifying to imagine
- 35:48if you were obviously no one's around it at the time but it is
- 35:52not the amount of power that thing has yes, it's Yes, they're
- 35:58actually we're really looking at the like the Retro throat.
- 36:01We believe is the highest heat flux of any human-made object
- 36:07ever. Well, how does it survive?
- 36:11Is it helped that Plaza has to go through a throat?
- 36:15Any, how does that throat? Not melt.
- 36:17That's crazy. And literally, how does it from
- 36:21a mastermind like film Cooling and regenerative doing?
- 36:24Yes, keep getting cooled region. It's like getting crazy to regen
- 36:27Cooling and like we're flowing. Liquid methane at extreme
- 36:30pressure, 11,000 PSI through the jacket at clothes ripping and
- 36:35then combine that with film Cooling and the best thermal
- 36:38barrier Coatings, we can come up with but it's still shocking
- 36:42that we do not favor eyes, the throat of that engine in
- 36:45immediately, it's a heat transfer so insane, but that's
- 36:50what we live on a planet with a lot it with strong gravity and I
- 36:53freaked out. Sphere.
- 36:54So it's this is what's needed. If we were to become a
- 36:58spacefaring civilization and bold based on the moon and the
- 37:01city on Mars and yeah multi-planet species which is I
- 37:05think a super exciting future and at a high level the super
- 37:08cool thing here is that hey this thing kind of works and we're
- 37:12going to solve the issues that are remaining and we'll get it
- 37:15to all good. And we'll make it reusable.
- 37:17And that means that we have it a real path here to get Humanity
- 37:22to Mars. It's also that's mind-blowing
- 37:27Ilana. I want to let other people talk
- 37:29here but I did want to say just on behalf of all of us, that the
- 37:32production work that you guys put on like the actual show, we
- 37:36all greatly appreciate it. I think that was like one of the
- 37:38most amazing launch coverage. Has I've ever seen and I think a
- 37:41lot of us were like hoping that you guys were going to give us
- 37:44cool angles and you guys by far exceeded the expectations.

- 38:47to Brewster nine. But I was somewhat, I did not
- 38:49mention the ship number, I know. So it's a good catch there.
- 38:54Yeah, I think we'll probably make that decision at this this
- 38:56week, but I do we want, we do want to bet on success in the
- 38:59sense that if we get to orbit, it will be super helpful that
- 39:02try a deal good and see how well, the ship heat shield works
- 39:07at you because we need to maintain control in Hypersonic,
- 39:10High heating regime. Then get through transonic and
- 39:12then maintain control away. Through a very wide array of
- 39:19micro regimes and so the vehicle actually behaves differently
- 39:24with a radically different Heating and force at the various
- 39:26mcroy coming back from like, roughly Mach 23 20.
- 39:30Yes, we do. I think we want to have that
- 39:32option. So I think we'll put a chiffon.
- 39:34That gives us that capability, but we haven't decided exactly

- 39:44On the launched, our side of things.
- 39:46Have you catalogued damage to the equipment?
- 39:49It looks like some of the tanks were hit by debris and there's
- 39:53quite a lot scattered around. Do you know can you give us like
- 39:56a rundown of what you guys need to replace versus repair?
- 40:00We're going to be replacing a bunch of the tanks in the tank
- 40:03farm, but these are tanks that we want to replace.
- 40:05Anyway, so the we're going with more of the vacuum jacketed
- 40:10giant, hot dog looking tanks. As opposed to the solute.
- 40:15Yeah, vacuum decade of giant hot dog tag, so that those are in
- 40:19the best shape and those are what we want.
- 40:21Anyway, so some of the tax will be yet but probably removing and
- 40:24replacing with the hotdog tanks. The tower itself is in good
- 40:28shape. We see you know, Now ready for
- 40:31damage to the tower even though to get hit with some pretty big
- 40:34chunks of concrete. And yeah, then likes it will be
- 40:37installing the big water but a jacketed still sandwich thing
- 40:40under the pad of doing final prep on the next Brewster and
- 40:43ship and hopefully be ready to fly again in a couple months.
- 40:47Once again, excitement guaranteed success is not, but I
- 40:50do think I'm cautiously optimistic.
- 40:53I think we've got this time. We've got a better than 50%
- 40:55chance of reaching orbit, so that would be incredibly
- 40:59exciting. Is that steel plate.
- 41:01The only thing that you guys are implementing to reduce the
- 41:04amount of debris that gets everywhere or is other other
- 41:07fixes that you're considering to fix that, but there's a bunch of
- 41:11other things were doing. So this gave you a lot of Steel
- 41:15plating with. So not just underneath the
- 41:17directly underneath the, the rocket, but also extended beyond
- 41:20that and also tying the whole structure in together with the
- 41:23legs which, which goat that those legs go down very deep and
- 41:27then just in general what we want to have.
- 41:30Launchpad that over time requires a no refurbishment
- 41:35between flights, and that means, obviously not throwing out
- 41:38chunks of concrete rapidly, reusable rockets and reusable
- 41:42launch pads. Exactly.
- 41:45Yeah. Totally on the launch site
- 41:47itself, it looks like it's little little bit off the pad
- 41:50instead of going like straight vertical, like Falcon does, was
- 41:53that part of the profile or was that because the engine
- 41:55failures, that's because engine failures.
