- 0:07Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:11Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex Barth.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Blazarre and lazarn O. Everybody nailed it. Joined has always
- 0:17Speaker 2: by power. Here is Evan Lazar and Alex bars. What
- 0:24Speaker 2: I'm trying to do with this game is find a
- 0:26Speaker 2: path for Denver to win the game. But the Patriots
- 0:27Speaker 2: turned the ball over four times, and yeah, Denver could
- 0:29Speaker 2: win the game.
- 0:30Speaker 1: But that that's the path even if it was Bonnix.
- 0:32Speaker 1: I say this with no disrespect to bo Nicks. I
- 0:34Speaker 1: says no disrespect to Jared hit him. But the reality
- 0:37Speaker 1: of the situation is the Broncos have been and we're
- 0:41Speaker 1: always going to be a team carried by their defense.
- 0:44Speaker 1: That's just the way it's built, that's the way they
- 0:46Speaker 1: want all here. I know bo Nicks has made some
- 0:47Speaker 1: plays late in games because the defense is dominated. The
- 0:50Speaker 1: Jared Stidham thing obviously makes it.
- 0:53Speaker 2: It's it's a.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Factor, it's an impact, especially those gotta have it. I
- 0:56Speaker 1: think the individual plays. The overall big picture of it, though,
- 0:59Speaker 1: is the Broncos defense. The Patriot's not letting the Broncos
- 1:02Speaker 1: defense dominate the game. I would be saying that if Bonix.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Was starting, all right, well, the Patriots are going to
- 1:13Speaker 2: the super Bowl, Barth, they are and so are we.
- 1:16Speaker 2: So that's pretty cool. The Patriots are going to the
- 1:19Speaker 2: super Bowl. It is pretty cool. All of it is
- 1:22Speaker 2: pretty cool. And uh, you know, yesterday I'm unfiltered reopened
- 1:26Speaker 2: Alex with just sitting there for ten minutes in disbelief
- 1:30Speaker 2: basically that this is where we're at.
- 1:32Speaker 1: And I'm still kind I still don't.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Really it still hasn't really fully set in. I don't
- 1:36Speaker 2: think I think, you know, Sunday night, it certainly had
- 1:40Speaker 2: not settled in at all as we were, you know,
- 1:44Speaker 2: snowed in in Denver. What was us for the night.
- 1:48Speaker 2: And you know, it's it's really remarkable what this team
- 1:52Speaker 2: has done and where this team is headed. And they
- 1:56Speaker 2: deserve all the flowers for that, all of the praise
- 2:00Speaker 2: for that. This is truly in my time covering this team,
- 2:06Speaker 2: covering the NFL, I really can't think of a better
- 2:09Speaker 2: coaching job than what we've seen from Mike Rabel this season.
- 2:14Speaker 2: It's not just the fact that they've won what's seventeen
- 2:18Speaker 2: and three now at this point, it's also just the
- 2:24Speaker 2: it kind of goes on your side of the street
- 2:26Speaker 2: a little bit on that like leader of men type
- 2:28Speaker 2: of thing, where like I just don't really can't really
- 2:32Speaker 2: think of a guy that's galvanized the troops quite like
- 2:35Speaker 2: Mike Rabel has. And then also, you know, the individual
- 2:39Speaker 2: improvement of even some of the players that were here
- 2:42Speaker 2: last year that have improved. Obviously Drake may being the
- 2:46Speaker 2: biggest one, but I would say a lot of guys
- 2:49Speaker 2: have improved from this year to la compared to last
- 2:52Speaker 2: year that we're even here on this team. Last year,
- 2:56Speaker 2: you know, that won four games. So Mike Rabel hell
- 2:59Speaker 2: of a job. The Patriots defense hell of a job
- 3:03Speaker 2: once again against a you know, a backup quarterback, but
- 3:07Speaker 2: they dominated a backup quarterback, which is what you're supposed
- 3:11Speaker 2: to do, yes, and they thoroughly did. You know, early
- 3:14Speaker 2: on in this game, Denver had some scripted plays that worked,
- 3:18Speaker 2: and you know, obviously the bomb to Mims was one
- 3:20Speaker 2: of those. But once that kind of ran out, it
- 3:23Speaker 2: was which you.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Kind of figured with Sean Payton, we talked about this, Yeah, Okay,
- 3:28Speaker 1: there's one drive that they'll have and they'll get their punch,
- 3:31Speaker 1: and they got their punch and after that nothing, Yeah.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Yeah, they were, you know, it was it was one
- 3:36Speaker 2: of those types of games and here we are, you know,
- 3:40Speaker 2: I think the other you know, kind of couple of
- 3:42Speaker 2: big picture things that I wanted to get to, and
- 3:45Speaker 2: then we have a little show announcement about next week,
- 3:48Speaker 2: which is really excited about that. This to me, this
- 3:52Speaker 2: playoff run for the Patriots is really They're here because
- 3:58Speaker 2: of their defensive line. The Patriots defensive line has been
- 4:03Speaker 2: absolutely dominant for three straight games, and I think when
- 4:06Speaker 2: they were dominated against the Chargers, and they were dominant
- 4:08Speaker 2: against the Texans, it was impressive, but it was also
- 4:12Speaker 2: against two of the worst offensive lines in football. The
- 4:14Speaker 2: Chargers have the worst offensive line in football with all
- 4:17Speaker 2: their injuries. The Texans were not that far behind. And
- 4:20Speaker 2: so the one question I had going into this game
- 4:24Speaker 2: was the Patriots defensive line going to be able to
- 4:27Speaker 2: dominate like they did in the first two playoff games
- 4:31Speaker 2: against much better competition in the Denver Broncos, who some people,
- 4:37Speaker 2: as Milton Williams told us after the game, thought was
- 4:40Speaker 2: the best offensive line in the NFL. And the Patriots
- 4:43Speaker 2: defensive line went out there and put an absolute world
- 4:48Speaker 2: of hurt on that Broncos offensive line. Run game pass game.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Flat out dominated that game for four quarters in the trenches.
- 4:58Speaker 2: That to me, is the most optimistic thing about this
- 5:02Speaker 2: Super Bowl matchup is that now we can confidently say
- 5:07Speaker 2: that their defensive line is going to travel right like
- 5:09Speaker 2: their defensive line is going to play well. Is elite,
- 5:13Speaker 2: it's a lead against good competition. It is, you know,
- 5:16Speaker 2: overwhelmingly elite against bad competition. You know, the Seahawks probably
- 5:21Speaker 2: fall somewhere in the middle of that conversation. You know,
- 5:24Speaker 2: they're above average, but I don't think they're elite on
- 5:26Speaker 2: the offensive line by any means, and they I am
- 5:30Speaker 2: confident that the Patriots defensive line is going to do
- 5:33Speaker 2: a lot of things to cause problems for Sam Darnold
- 5:36Speaker 2: and the Seahawks. And we'll get to the Seahawks in
- 5:38Speaker 2: the second hour of the show. All that said, all
- 5:41Speaker 2: of the waxing poetics said about the defense, about Mike Rabel,
- 5:47Speaker 2: the Patriots offense is in a rut. They're in a slump.
- 5:51Speaker 2: They've only scored eighteen points a game through three playoff games.
- 5:56Speaker 2: They are going to have to find a way to
- 6:00Speaker 2: recapture what they had going on in the regular season
- 6:03Speaker 2: and score some points, or they are not going to
- 6:05Speaker 2: win the Super Bowl. You know, they're not going to
- 6:07Speaker 2: beat Seattle if they play offense the way that they've
- 6:09Speaker 2: been playing offense. There's climate issue, you know, whether it's
- 6:13Speaker 2: like impacted, there's really good defensive play on the other
- 6:16Speaker 2: side of the ball. Well, not changing all fair but offensively.
- 6:23Speaker 2: You know, we have to point out that this has
- 6:25Speaker 2: not been good enough on that side of the ball
- 6:27Speaker 2: to win a championship.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I think the weather's a part of it. The
- 6:31Speaker 1: good defenses are part of it. I do think for
- 6:35Speaker 1: what that game was, the offense took a step forward
- 6:41Speaker 1: against Denver. Now that's relatively speaking. They were not in
- 6:43Speaker 1: a good way against Houston, and they're still going to
- 6:46Speaker 1: need to be even better than that, certainly better than
- 6:49Speaker 1: that to move the ball and put up points against Seattle.
- 6:53Speaker 1: You know, they do need to be better. You're right,
- 6:58Speaker 1: But I think just like you talked about the off
- 7:00Speaker 1: defensive line or with the defensive line, it all starts
- 7:03Speaker 1: up front for me with the Patriots, like their issues
- 7:05Speaker 1: all start with what the line's been and Drake made
- 7:08Speaker 1: is complicit in some of this in terms of throwing
- 7:09Speaker 1: the ball away, throwing the ball quicker and things like that.
- 7:12Speaker 1: But to look at the game Campbell had against Nick Benito,
- 7:15Speaker 1: to look at the game like Mike w and Winn
- 7:16Speaker 1: who had Gar Bradbury had, it does feel like that
- 7:20Speaker 1: group was better. And if there's more confidence in that group,
- 7:22Speaker 1: I think everything builds from that. So I think the
- 7:25Speaker 1: line needs to be better than it was against Denver.
- 7:28Speaker 1: But I actually for what it was, and look, we're
- 7:32Speaker 1: the guys that will sit down and break down the
- 7:34Speaker 1: x's and o's to the the n degree, to the
- 7:37Speaker 1: nitty gritty, teeny tiny whatever you want to call it.
- 7:40Speaker 1: The second half of that game, the x's and o's
- 7:43Speaker 1: are don't fall over and don't drop the ball. That's
- 7:46Speaker 1: pretty much it.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Save I would say, late into the third quarter, to
- 7:50Speaker 2: the into the forest.
- 7:51Speaker 1: To the final twenty twenty five minutes, the nine minute
- 7:55Speaker 1: drive they had in the third quarter.
- 7:56Speaker 2: The conditions were fine.
- 7:57Speaker 1: And they were good, and they were good. But I'm saying,
- 7:59Speaker 1: like I don't good or bad. I kind of just
- 8:02Speaker 1: the end of that game was just hang on and survive.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Fair enough, right, I agreed.
- 8:06Speaker 1: So for the beginning of the game, because people pointed to,
- 8:09Speaker 1: how can you say they look better? Look at the
- 8:11Speaker 1: numbers blah blah blah, like the I'm looking at the
- 8:13Speaker 1: first thirty five to forty minutes.
- 8:15Speaker 2: They didn't look better in per se, but they didn't
- 8:18Speaker 2: turn the ball over.
- 8:19Speaker 1: I thought the offensive line is better.
- 8:21Speaker 2: The offensive line I mean maybe, I mean they didn't better.
- 8:24Speaker 2: It still needs to be better against it. Yeah, I
- 8:26Speaker 2: thought their pass protection has was okay. They didn't what
- 8:31Speaker 2: they couldn't They couldn't run.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Block from what Denver front is.
- 8:34Speaker 2: I thought they would be able to run the ball better.
- 8:37Speaker 1: I was expecting it to be overall. Maybe I'm focusing
- 8:39Speaker 1: more on pass protection.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I was expecting them to be able to run
- 8:43Speaker 2: the ball a little bit better. And to their credit,
- 8:46Speaker 2: you know, Mandre had two ten plus yard runs and
- 8:49Speaker 2: carved out some tough yards, but their movement up front
- 8:53Speaker 2: was you know, not good enough. Like their yards before
- 8:55Speaker 2: contact number was well below a yard, which is not
- 8:59Speaker 2: where you want to be. But that being said that
- 9:02Speaker 2: that wasn't really what I wanted to unpack, you know,
- 9:05Speaker 2: right off the top of the show. But you know,
- 9:09Speaker 2: because we're going to get into all the nitty gritty
- 9:11Speaker 2: obviously here in a second. But I just think that
- 9:14Speaker 2: you have to objectively point out that the offense. As
- 9:19Speaker 2: excited as we all are, you know, the offense is
- 9:23Speaker 2: a problem right now. Yeah, they need to fix and
- 9:26Speaker 2: I think that it's a combination of factors. I think that,
- 9:30Speaker 2: you know, whenever you talk about things in football, I
- 9:33Speaker 2: would love to be able to sit here and say,
- 9:34Speaker 2: it's this one thing that's an issue, and if they
- 9:38Speaker 2: fix this one thing, then everything will come back around.
- 9:41Speaker 2: I don't think it's ever like that in a game
- 9:43Speaker 2: that's a true team sport. I don't think Drake May
- 9:47Speaker 2: has played particularly well. Now. I know that there's all
- 9:50Speaker 2: this rumor, all these reporting, whatever you want to call it,
- 9:54Speaker 2: out there about his shoulder. Is he hurt? Is he not?
- 9:57Speaker 2: I don't know. I'm just telling you what the results
- 9:59Speaker 2: are on the film not. I'm not going to sit
- 10:02Speaker 2: here and speculate about his shoulder. And we'll have an
- 10:05Speaker 2: injury report later here today that will tell us a
- 10:08Speaker 2: little bit more. I'm sure about that situation. But he
- 10:12Speaker 2: has not played well this game. It wasn't necessarily turnovers,
- 10:16Speaker 2: which I guess you could say is a good thing,
- 10:18Speaker 2: although he probably should have gotten picked off on the
- 10:20Speaker 2: first pass attempt of the game and on the opening drive.
- 10:23Speaker 2: But it wasn't necessarily turnovers. It was missing throws. You know,
- 10:27Speaker 2: he had five or six opportunities to hit receivers down
- 10:30Speaker 2: the field that he just flat out missed the throw,
- 10:33Speaker 2: you know, and that is not typical of him. Usually
- 10:37Speaker 2: when I you know, watched the tape, it's like two
- 10:40Speaker 2: to three of those a game. This was like five
- 10:43Speaker 2: or six of those, you know. So that's a big,
- 10:45Speaker 2: big number, which is why you know, you wonder about
- 10:48Speaker 2: his health a little bit because that's not, you know,
- 10:52Speaker 2: very common, especially the miss low yea and to be
- 10:55Speaker 2: short on throws. So that's a big, big factor. Quarterback
- 11:00Speaker 2: during the regular season was playing like an MVP. Right now,
- 11:04Speaker 2: he's not playing at that level. And there's a lot
- 11:07Speaker 2: of factors that go into that. The weather, the defense
- 11:10Speaker 2: is on the other side of the ball, but it
- 11:12Speaker 2: is what it is. You know, the offensive line has
- 11:14Speaker 2: its issues. There are times where pass protection is a problem,
- 11:19Speaker 2: and sometimes it comes up at times where there are
- 11:22Speaker 2: opportunities to push the ball down the field but the
- 11:24Speaker 2: protection hasn't hold it held up and so they missed
- 11:27Speaker 2: those opportunities, which in a game like Sunday, there's only
- 11:31Speaker 2: going to be two or three of those opportunities, and
- 11:33Speaker 2: when you miss them because of issues, you know, kind
- 11:36Speaker 2: of like the land mine offense, you just are kind
- 11:37Speaker 2: of trying to avoid stepping on the land mine that
- 11:41Speaker 2: that causes you to have issues like they had on Sunday.
- 11:45Speaker 2: The last one that I see with the film is
- 11:48Speaker 2: kind of a combination of factors. Again with this receiving cores,
- 11:52Speaker 2: I don't think that they have produced as many open
- 11:56Speaker 2: receivers as they have in the in the in the
- 11:59Speaker 2: regular season.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Like, guys weren't getting open as much in this game.
- 12:02Speaker 2: I don't want to. Like, I think that the separation
- 12:05Speaker 2: issue is kind of like a triggering subject, like when
- 12:08Speaker 2: you say that people kind of lose their marbles a
- 12:11Speaker 2: little bit that you're pointing out that out. Again, I
- 12:14Speaker 2: think it's a combination of factors. I think the biggest
- 12:17Speaker 2: factor in that is that Stefan Diggs is continuing to
- 12:21Speaker 2: just see extra attention, especially on third down. You know,
- 12:24Speaker 2: they they're doubling him, they're bracketing him, they have help
- 12:29Speaker 2: in the middle of the field that is being used
- 12:31Speaker 2: to leverage his routes, and there's really no place for
- 12:35Speaker 2: him to go some of the time. So when that
- 12:39Speaker 2: happens that that's an issue, you know, and they have
- 12:42Speaker 2: issues in my opinion, you know, on the outside with
- 12:45Speaker 2: really creating great separation. So what ends up happening is
- 12:48Speaker 2: you're just like throwing fifty to fifty balls to Keiseh
- 12:50Speaker 2: on booty and hoping that he beats Patrick Surtan over
- 12:53Speaker 2: the top of the defense because that's really the only
- 12:55Speaker 2: place to go with the ball, you know, based off
- 12:57Speaker 2: of the way that they're playing coverage. So that all
- 13:00Speaker 2: of that is a factor into all of this with
- 13:03Speaker 2: the offense, and it's not one thing, you know, I
- 13:06Speaker 2: would probably say if I had to like divvy up
- 13:09Speaker 2: a blame pie. And I know it's silly to say
- 13:10Speaker 2: blame pie when they won the game and they're going
- 13:12Speaker 2: to the super Bowl, but divvying up the blame pie
- 13:17Speaker 2: here on offense, I do think Drake may is probably
- 13:20Speaker 2: the biggest slice because he's the quarterback. Yeah, you know,
- 13:24Speaker 2: and even though I don't think there was a three
- 13:26Speaker 2: hundred yard passing game there on film, there was certainly
- 13:29Speaker 2: a better game than ten for twenty one for what
- 13:31Speaker 2: was at eighty six yards or whatever it ended up being.
- 13:34Speaker 2: That was a little bit on him. So that's where
- 13:38Speaker 2: I'm at with the offense. We're gonna do the good,
- 13:41Speaker 2: the bad, the stuff that gets you beat from the
- 13:42Speaker 2: AFC Championship Game. There's more good, I promise. I know
- 13:46Speaker 2: he started a little bit negative there, but I promise
- 13:48Speaker 2: that I have plenty of good things to highlight from
- 13:51Speaker 2: this game as well. We are going to talk a
- 13:53Speaker 2: little Seahawks probably in the second half of the show,
- 13:56Speaker 2: and we'll talk a little bit just like some initial thoughts.
- 13:59Speaker 2: You know, We're to have way more next week in
- 14:02Speaker 2: San fran or Santa Clara or Bay Area, whatever you
- 14:04Speaker 2: want to call it. But we'll have a little bit
- 14:06Speaker 2: of that. And we got to get to to Bill
- 14:09Speaker 2: Belichick in the Hall of Fame, and I think both
- 14:11Speaker 2: of us have some strong opinions on that whole topic,
- 14:15Speaker 2: so we will. We'll definitely get to that as well
- 14:17Speaker 2: here today in the second hour of the show. But
- 14:20Speaker 2: let's start with the good and the bad, the stuff
- 14:23Speaker 2: that gets to be from the ABC Championship game. I
- 14:27Speaker 2: want to start with the goods, obviously, because there's a
- 14:29Speaker 2: lot of it on the defensive side of the ball
- 14:30Speaker 2: that we kind of just glossed over. My bad. Oh wait,
- 14:33Speaker 2: before we start show announcement. YEA, let's do this first.
- 14:36Speaker 2: I want to do this off the top show announcement.
- 14:39Speaker 2: So next week Catchway two will be live from Radio
- 14:43Speaker 2: Row in San Francisco, downtown San Francisco, same setup that
- 14:48Speaker 2: we'll have for PU during the week, so we'll be
- 14:50Speaker 2: in the same spot. It's going to be from seven
- 14:53Speaker 2: to nine pm Eastern four to six Pacific. Alex and
- 14:58Speaker 2: I both have a lot going on during the day,
- 15:01Speaker 2: as you guys can probably imagine in San Francisco, so
- 15:04Speaker 2: we're gonna do it at the end of the day
- 15:05Speaker 2: once all the media availability and your Sports Hub obligations
- 15:09Speaker 2: and PU and all that stuff is over. H So again,
- 15:12Speaker 2: that's seven to nine pm Eastern time in San Francisco.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Next week, same day, Wednesday, same day and four to
- 15:19Speaker 2: six specific We'll obviously have you know, we'll post on
- 15:24Speaker 2: X and all that good stuff and keep you guys
- 15:26Speaker 2: informed on that. But yeah, I'm really excited to do that.
- 15:28Speaker 2: I've never done a show from Radio Row, so it's
- 15:31Speaker 2: I mean, like officially, you know, we did, like with
- 15:35Speaker 2: Clinton as we kind of did a show from radio
- 15:37Speaker 2: and well you yeah, I know you did. But I'm
- 15:39Speaker 2: saying I have never done. I've never Also, have you
- 15:42Speaker 2: ever hosted a show on radio row podcast? Yeah, it
- 15:45Speaker 2: doesn't count.
- 15:46Speaker 1: This is a podcast. What you mean that doesn't doesn't count? No,
- 15:49Speaker 1: it doesn't think it counts, all right.
- 15:51Speaker 2: So it would be cool. Uh, let's get into the game.
- 15:54Speaker 2: So the first point, and I I can't help myself.
- 15:58Speaker 2: So I'm just gonna kind of victory lap here, not
- 16:00Speaker 2: victory lap. But like, you know how I feel about
- 16:03Speaker 2: Cham Payton. I'm not a fan, all right, and I
- 16:06Speaker 2: thought that his I understood his bravado and his cockiness
- 16:10Speaker 2: going into this game to try to hype up his
- 16:12Speaker 2: team with his bat, his backup quarterback and all that.
- 16:14Speaker 2: I get it. But I actually thought in this game
- 16:17Speaker 2: from an ex's and no standpoint, I thought Zach Corr
- 16:20Speaker 2: kind of owned him, honestly, and I loved it, Like
- 16:23Speaker 2: I was like, good like this guy. Sean Payton revered
- 16:26Speaker 2: as one of the best play callers, one of the
- 16:29Speaker 2: best offensive minds of his generation, and Zach Korr time
- 16:34Speaker 2: and time again in like big spots, you know, critical downs. Obviously,
- 16:38Speaker 2: the fourth and one play is the one that gets
- 16:40Speaker 2: most of the attention. The Patriots ran It's called red two.
- 16:45Speaker 2: It's you know, a red zone goal line coverage on
- 16:49Speaker 2: the play, and Sean Payton admitted after the game that
- 16:51Speaker 2: he was not prepared for them to run that coverage,
- 16:55Speaker 2: to run that defensive scheme. I also thought on you know,
- 16:58Speaker 2: the third and four strip sack that ended up really
- 17:01Speaker 2: being the game with Jared Sidham setting up the Patriots
- 17:04Speaker 2: lone touchdown. They played man, they blitzed off the edge,
- 17:08Speaker 2: they overloaded the right side. The Patriots had two unblocked
- 17:12Speaker 2: rushers on the play, and Jared Sidham had no outlet,
- 17:15Speaker 2: Like there was no hot there was no check down.
- 17:17Speaker 2: There was nothing he could have done besides throw the
- 17:19Speaker 2: ball away, which is what he should have done, but
- 17:21Speaker 2: he didn't. So in both those instances, which I think
- 17:24Speaker 2: were really the game, you know, the fourth and one
- 17:26Speaker 2: play and third and four that ends up in a
- 17:29Speaker 2: strip sack that sets the Patriots up at their the
- 17:32Speaker 2: Broncos twelve yard line, Zach Korr won both downs. Like
- 17:36Speaker 2: they ran a scheme that Sean Payton did not have
- 17:38Speaker 2: an answer for, and they won both downs in that instance.
- 17:42Speaker 2: And if Zach Korp, you know, take a bout, I
- 17:44Speaker 2: mean that's impressive against the guy that's done it as
- 17:46Speaker 2: long as Sean Payton has. I do love escapegoated his
- 17:50Speaker 2: offensive coordinator, like, dude, you call the plays like like
- 17:54Speaker 2: come on, like what are we doing? You run the
- 17:57Speaker 2: off it's your offense. You call the plays, you have
- 17:59Speaker 2: the place, and then you go ahead and you fire
- 18:01Speaker 2: the wide receivers coach in the offensive coordinator like it's
- 18:04Speaker 2: their fault, like please, And so you know, it's unbelievable
- 18:09Speaker 2: to watch this ascension for Zach Korr, who has just
- 18:13Speaker 2: gone from a guy that was kind of thrust into
- 18:15Speaker 2: this role early on in the season to now being
- 18:20Speaker 2: winning a play calling battle against Sean Payton in the
- 18:22Speaker 2: AFC Championship game like that, that's pretty cool.
- 18:25Speaker 1: I would just point out, by the way you mentioned
- 18:26Speaker 1: Sean Payton, maybe you know, not the best play calling.
- 18:30Speaker 1: To go back to a debate, we've had offensive mines
- 18:33Speaker 1: versus defensive minds Championship weekend. Who won.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Well, it's funny because I think that I saw and
- 18:39Speaker 2: I haven't fact checked this myself, but there's two defensive
- 18:43Speaker 2: coaches in the Super Bowl. I think that this is
- 18:45Speaker 2: going to be the first time since Belichick in eighteen
- 18:48Speaker 2: that a defensive minded head coach is going to win
- 18:50Speaker 2: the Super Bowl because obviously Andy Reid's done it a bunch.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Nick Siriani is considered an offensive guy. Sean McVay is
- 18:56Speaker 2: an offensive guy. So I think that this is now granted,
- 19:01Speaker 2: like half of them are Andy Reid.
- 19:02Speaker 1: But this is excuse a little bit.
- 19:04Speaker 2: It's a little bit.
- 19:06Speaker 1: I'll give you this. Uh, there has not been a
- 19:09Speaker 1: main defensive head coach in the Super Bowl since Patriots
- 19:15Speaker 1: Rams because his Chiefs Niners, Bucks, Chiefs Rams, Bengals, Chiefs Eagles,
- 19:21Speaker 1: Chiefs Niners, Chiefs Eagles.
- 19:22Speaker 2: Yeah. So yeah, so it's a little bit of a different,
- 19:26Speaker 2: different thing here.
- 19:27Speaker 1: No, Zach Korr has been outstanding in these playoffs. I
- 19:33Speaker 1: don't know that anybody has. I don't want to say
- 19:35Speaker 1: punched above their weight, but like exceeded expectations more. And
- 19:38Speaker 1: I didn't think Zach cor did you know, bad job
- 19:41Speaker 1: during the regular season, but this he's taken this to
- 19:43Speaker 1: another level. And the way he seems to have his
- 19:48Speaker 1: finger on the pulse of when to send the blitz,
- 19:49Speaker 1: where to send the blitz, ou to blitz things like that,
- 19:52Speaker 1: It's it's been a real The blitz has been a
- 19:54Speaker 1: real weapon the Patriots. So Zach Korr. He wasn't the
- 20:00Speaker 1: full time DC this year and it's late in the
- 20:02Speaker 1: process and blah blah blah. I don't know that he's
- 20:04Speaker 1: going to get I mean, the coaching opening is almost full,
- 20:07Speaker 1: so I don't know that he's going to get any
- 20:08Speaker 1: calls on that this year. Doesn't he kind of have
- 20:11Speaker 1: to go into next year as one of the hotter names,
- 20:13Speaker 1: Like if especially if he's a good Super Bowl, he's
- 20:15Speaker 1: been unbelievable. It's it should be more of a story
- 20:18Speaker 1: than it is. And hopefully when we get out Santa
- 20:21Speaker 1: Claire next week and you know, people start doing the
- 20:23Speaker 1: stories and all that, there's gonna be a ton on
- 20:24Speaker 1: Zach Krer because he's we were saying his name wrong
- 20:28Speaker 1: for the first like month.
- 20:29Speaker 2: That he was doing this and the pronunciations and now
- 20:32Speaker 2: on Patriots Dot it is core like cors.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Light, Okay, core core is and he's been a core
- 20:38Speaker 1: member of why they're here. Yeah, So to go from
- 20:41Speaker 1: that to this is outstanding. He deserves a ton of credit.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Yeah, it deserves a ton of credit. And you know,
- 20:46Speaker 2: I don't want to speculate about Terrell Williams' situation, Like
- 20:50Speaker 2: I don't know what's going to happen with that going
- 20:52Speaker 2: into next season.
- 20:53Speaker 1: They'll they'll figure that out.
- 20:55Speaker 2: But I don't think anybody, you know, unfortunately, if Terrell
- 20:58Speaker 2: Williams is not up for coaching, I don't think anybody
- 21:01Speaker 2: would be opposed at all to Zach Korr.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Being the defensive courdet the're in if it's out.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Yeah, and he's done a fantastic job and deserves all
- 21:10Speaker 2: the credit in the world. You know, it's one thing
- 21:12Speaker 2: to do it, I would say, you know, I would
- 21:16Speaker 2: also mention, you know, was Zach Korr. He's gotten two
- 21:19Speaker 2: offensive coordinators fired, Greig Roman and Joe Lombardi both got
- 21:24Speaker 2: shown the door after facing this Patriots defense in these playoffs,
- 21:30Speaker 2: So you know, look, kudos to him, and you know,
- 21:33Speaker 2: not to get ahead of ourselves, but klink Kubiak's the
- 21:36Speaker 2: real deal. So he's going to have another tough test
- 21:38Speaker 2: with Seattle in the super Bowl, but so far just
- 21:42Speaker 2: passing every test with flying Colors. You mentioned the blitzing.
- 21:45Speaker 2: They are at about a forty percent blitz rate in
- 21:47Speaker 2: the playoffs. Yeah, some of that is just kind of
- 21:50Speaker 2: like adding on the linebacker as like the fifth rusher.
- 21:52Speaker 2: A lot of Christianellis blitzer and things like that. So
- 21:54Speaker 2: it's not all these like cooked up, like crazy schemes.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Some of it's just let's get five into the pass
- 22:02Speaker 2: rush so that they can be five on five across
- 22:04Speaker 2: the board and get those one on one matchups. But still,
- 22:07Speaker 2: it's it's been very noticeable how much more they've blitzed
- 22:11Speaker 2: and how effective some of their blitzes have been since
- 22:14Speaker 2: you know, they the playoffs. Really you know, man coverage blitzes.
- 22:18Speaker 2: That's kind of been the story of the playoffs so
- 22:20Speaker 2: far for the Patriots defense is turning the dial up
- 22:23Speaker 2: on both of those things has really flipped this script here.
- 22:27Speaker 2: So I mentioned the defensive line, you know, just a
- 22:30Speaker 2: couple of other notes on that. You know, I really
- 22:32Speaker 2: just thought across the board, they just keep getting contributions.
- 22:36Speaker 2: You know, Milton Williams and Kylevon chase On and Christian
- 22:39Speaker 2: Barmore are clearly the s tier players on that line.
- 22:43Speaker 2: I think we're gonna have some great conversations. I don't
- 22:46Speaker 2: know if today's the day about Kleon chase On and
- 22:49Speaker 2: what you do with him. He's a free agent. I'm
- 22:52Speaker 2: getting to the point and I know he's gonna get
- 22:54Speaker 2: the Milton Williams treatment of you had a great playoff,
- 22:57Speaker 2: so you're probably gonna get the bag right and free agent. See.
- 23:01Speaker 2: But I think it might be worth it in some
- 23:03Speaker 2: ways for this Patriots team because they're gonna end up
- 23:06Speaker 2: creating two holes on the edge if they let Kylevon
- 23:09Speaker 2: Chase on walk because I don't know what you're gonna
- 23:11Speaker 2: get out of Harold Landry.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Yeah, he's a big unknown.
- 23:14Speaker 2: And so when you have you're basically going to be
- 23:17Speaker 2: down to starting edge rushers if Kylevon Chased On walks.
- 23:21Speaker 2: So I think that there's a chance that they do
- 23:24Speaker 2: try to re sign.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Yeah, franchise tag candidate, he could.
- 23:27Speaker 2: He could be, or at least, you know, maybe like
- 23:29Speaker 2: a transition tag or like some sort of team control
- 23:32Speaker 2: on it. But you know, bar Moore, Williams Chase on
- 23:38Speaker 2: Ponder even beat Garrett Bowles.
- 23:40Speaker 1: A couple of game.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Yep.
- 23:42Speaker 1: He should have a bigger role next year. Maybe it's
- 23:44Speaker 1: not replacing kale On Chase on, but he should have
- 23:46Speaker 1: a bigger role.
- 23:46Speaker 2: Yeah. I think that he's you know, he's primed to
- 23:49Speaker 2: be the third or fourth rusher, you know, situational pass rusher. Uh,
- 23:53Speaker 2: Cairos Tanga a big tackle for loss that before the
- 23:57Speaker 2: blocked field goal that pushed them back a little bit. Uh,
- 24:00Speaker 2: just like continues to do the journey work court dirt rules.
- 24:03Speaker 1: Yeah, just in terms of the kind of out not
- 24:06Speaker 1: just that he's like a good player and what a
- 24:08Speaker 1: fine by them. Yeah, in terms of the kind of
- 24:10Speaker 1: player that he is. Just mean, nasty, violent, talks a
- 24:14Speaker 1: lot of trash like he Every every defense needs a
- 24:17Speaker 1: couple of those guys like tone setter. And I've had
- 24:21Speaker 1: a ton of fun, a ton of fun watching him.
- 24:23Speaker 2: Extremely strong, like you bought him one on one. He's
- 24:27Speaker 2: moving that that block, he's reset in the line of scrimmager.
- 24:30Speaker 2: He's pushing that player back into the quarterback. You know,
- 24:33Speaker 2: Anthony Jennings had another solid game on Sunday. You know
- 24:37Speaker 2: the numbers PFF.
- 24:39Speaker 1: Fact, you know, I don't know that you got one more.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Who did they miss?
- 24:42Speaker 1: Leonard Taylor?
- 24:44Speaker 2: Well, yeah, he bought the field goal. We'll get to that, okay. Yeah.
- 24:47Speaker 2: The the PFF numbers were friendly, really friendly. They had
- 24:52Speaker 2: it with over a fifty percent pressure eight in this game.
- 24:55Speaker 2: They had Milton Williams with eight pressures. Saw that it
- 24:58Speaker 2: was a little much why catching it back. Personally, you know,
- 25:02Speaker 2: I think that it was very good. I don't know
- 25:05Speaker 2: if it was fifty one percent pressure rate with you
- 25:07Speaker 2: know Milton with eight, I don't know about that, but
- 25:10Speaker 2: it was really good. I you know, next Gen had
- 25:13Speaker 2: it at thirty five point one percent pressure rate. So
- 25:16Speaker 2: if you want to split the baby and say it
- 25:18Speaker 2: was somewhere around forty, you know, it's still really good.
- 25:21Speaker 2: But I thought the other thing that was really key
- 25:23Speaker 2: in this game, other than just the pressure on Stidham,
- 25:26Speaker 2: was you know, their ability to stop the run game.
- 25:29Speaker 2: And I thought they would be able to stop the run.
- 25:31Speaker 2: I wasn't too worried about the Broncos running the ball,
- 25:34Speaker 2: but holding them to just over three yards per carry on,
- 25:37Speaker 2: you know, running back runs, not Stidham scrambles or Stidham
- 25:42Speaker 2: keeps a forest. Jared Sidham to drop back thirty seven
- 25:45Speaker 2: times in this game, with the second half being played
- 25:49Speaker 2: in the Blizzard like, I don't think that was the
- 25:51Speaker 2: plan for Denver. That was not their path. Their path
- 25:54Speaker 2: was not a thirty seven drop back game for Jared Stidham.
- 25:57Speaker 2: Their path was not to be in a lot of
- 25:59Speaker 2: third downs where the Patriots you know, pass rush Katie
- 26:02Speaker 2: off and they could get into their blitz package. That
- 26:05Speaker 2: was not a recipe for success for the Broncos. So
- 26:09Speaker 2: being able to stop the run, taking away some of
- 26:12Speaker 2: their balance, enforcing this game into Jared Sidham's hands is
- 26:16Speaker 2: why we're talking about going to the Super Bowl. That
- 26:19Speaker 2: was That was the game. The last couple of things
- 26:22Speaker 2: on defense, and we'll get to some of the other
- 26:24Speaker 2: some of the highlights on offense. I thought there were
- 26:26Speaker 2: some good things. Craig Woodson. I just keep on banging
- 26:30Speaker 2: the drum for Craig Woodson deserves a lot more love.
- 26:34Speaker 2: I want to give him that love. I mean, played
- 26:37Speaker 2: more defensive snaps than any Patriots player on defense this
- 26:41Speaker 2: season as a fourth round rookie and has played extremely well.
- 26:45Speaker 2: If you go watch that fourth and one play again,
- 26:48Speaker 2: it's him in the flat that takes away the running
- 26:51Speaker 2: back in the flat. It's a fast the flat play
- 26:53Speaker 2: where they're going to boot the quarterback out, They're going
- 26:55Speaker 2: to run the running back in the flat and they
- 26:57Speaker 2: run a little pick route, you know, little joy and
- 27:00Speaker 2: Humphy's trying to pick the man that's on R. J.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Harvey in the flat and Craig Woodson sees the pick
- 27:06Speaker 2: and falls off little Jordan Humphrey and sit days in
- 27:09Speaker 2: the flat. Like if he gets picked off on that play,
- 27:12Speaker 2: even with Milton Williams is pressure, then the play is
- 27:15Speaker 2: still going to have a chance to pick up a yard.
- 27:17Speaker 2: So Craig Woodson switches off there, makes a great play
- 27:20Speaker 2: to do that and basically saves the play as well.
- 27:23Speaker 2: Like I think he deserves as much credit as Milton
- 27:25Speaker 2: Williams does on the play forgetting that stop. Also had
- 27:30Speaker 2: to run stuff, took away a deep shot before halftime.
- 27:33Speaker 2: I mean, he's just been terrific for a guy that
- 27:36Speaker 2: is a fourth round rookie to be playing as much
- 27:38Speaker 2: as he is and to have the playoff run that
- 27:40Speaker 2: he's had. They got a real player here with Craig Woodson.
- 27:43Speaker 2: I think this is a trending towards being a real
- 27:46Speaker 2: hit for this personnel staff in the fourth round, which
- 27:49Speaker 2: is not easy to do.
- 27:50Speaker 1: No, it's not. He's been He's been excellent.
- 27:53Speaker 2: So a couple more things defensively, Like I said, I thought,
- 27:58Speaker 2: you know, man coverage why I thought the corners were
- 28:01Speaker 2: really really good. Now, the Broncos were short handed at receiver,
- 28:05Speaker 2: which definitely helped, but against manton Man in this game,
- 28:09Speaker 2: Jared Sidham six to fifteen for just thirty six yards
- 28:12Speaker 2: with an interception. So when they went to manton Man
- 28:15Speaker 2: and we'll get to some of the zone stuff, which
- 28:17Speaker 2: I thought was a little shaky later, but when they
- 28:19Speaker 2: got when they were in manton Man, they were really good.
- 28:22Speaker 2: I mean they were. It looked like they were basically
- 28:24Speaker 2: unfazed by whether it was Sutton Mims, whoever was out there.
- 28:30Speaker 2: It really just kind of looked like a walk in
- 28:31Speaker 2: the park for Christian Zales and Carlon Davis and Marcus Jones,
- 28:35Speaker 2: like they really looked unfazed by any of those guys,
- 28:38Speaker 2: especially once Gonza was like all right, Mims, like you
- 28:41Speaker 2: got you got by me once, you know, I'm not
- 28:42Speaker 2: gonna let that happen again. This was pretty dominant from
- 28:46Speaker 2: that point onto the game.
- 28:47Speaker 1: Yeah, and like you mentioned, it was against a lesser group,
- 28:50Speaker 1: but kind of like you said, with the you know,
- 28:52Speaker 1: the defense as the hole against the backup quarterback, this
- 28:54Speaker 1: is what you want to see. They made them look
- 28:56Speaker 1: like back it's gonna be a lot a lot tougher.
- 28:58Speaker 2: Yep.
- 28:59Speaker 1: Next week in San Francis, US go against these Seattle receivers.
- 29:01Speaker 1: But I felt throughout the playoffs the and maybe this
- 29:07Speaker 1: is because they're playing more man And we talked about
- 29:09Speaker 1: this all season. Why are they playing so much zone
- 29:11Speaker 1: when they have the man personnel. The part of the
- 29:15Speaker 1: reason I think the pass rush has been better is
- 29:17Speaker 1: they have more time. Yeah, because these corners have really
- 29:20Speaker 1: been locked down and they're giving the pass rush more
- 29:22Speaker 1: time to get to the quarterback. It allows you more
- 29:24Speaker 1: freedom to blitz as well because you trust these guys
- 29:25Speaker 1: in one on one coverage. Again, whole other level when
- 29:30Speaker 1: we get to JSN Rashichi Eat and Cooper Cup. But
- 29:33Speaker 1: so far that the secondary has really been locked down
- 29:37Speaker 1: in the playoffs and it's opened things up for Zach
- 29:39Speaker 1: Korr and the defensive front.
- 29:40Speaker 2: Yeah. I think it's definitely your point about feeling good
- 29:44Speaker 2: about blitzing because you know those guys can hold up.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Is definitely part of it, a huge part of it.
- 29:49Speaker 2: And then I think then it starts to marry it
- 29:52Speaker 2: start it, Yeah, and then it starts to marry you
- 29:54Speaker 2: know where like the blitzers are getting home, which are
- 29:57Speaker 2: causing throws to be a little off or a little early.
- 30:00Speaker 2: He threw one to Courtland Sutton that Courtland Sutton kind
- 30:03Speaker 2: of got a little bit of separation at the top
- 30:05Speaker 2: of the round on the one behind. Yeah, but it's
- 30:07Speaker 2: behind and it's low because Christnellis is right in his face,
- 30:10Speaker 2: you know, on the blitz. There was another one later
- 30:13Speaker 2: on where a little Jordan Humphrey didn't even turn around
- 30:16Speaker 2: yet and the ball is whizzing by his head because
- 30:18Speaker 2: again the blitz gets home and it's early, you know,
- 30:21Speaker 2: he has to throw it early before court, before little
- 30:25Speaker 2: Jordan Humphrey is ready, you know, to catch the football.
- 30:29Speaker 2: So it all kind of marries up at that point
- 30:32Speaker 2: where the initial stages of the route, these corners are
- 30:35Speaker 2: shutting guys down to give the pass rush that time
- 30:38Speaker 2: to get home, and the pass rush is getting home,
- 30:40Speaker 2: which is then affecting the throw right, And that's what
- 30:43Speaker 2: you want to see. That that's the good marriage that
- 30:45Speaker 2: you want to see. So let's move over to the offense,
- 30:48Speaker 2: because I do think there was a few good things
- 30:50Speaker 2: on offense that we're promising. You know, I kind of
- 30:54Speaker 2: split Drake made the passer and Drake made the runner.
- 30:57Speaker 2: He was really good with his legs in this game,
- 30:59Speaker 2: really kind of kept the offensive float on a day
- 31:02Speaker 2: where the offense struggled, you know, six or ten for
- 31:05Speaker 2: sixty five with the touchdown obviously, twenty eight yard scramble,
- 31:09Speaker 2: sixteen yard scrambled, thirteen yard scramble, a quarterback draw touchdown
- 31:13Speaker 2: which was a really nice call by Josh McDaniels, and
- 31:16Speaker 2: of course the boot to end it. It was a
- 31:18Speaker 2: big part of the reason why some of the advanced
- 31:21Speaker 2: metrics in this game. Alex didn't absolutely hate Drake May's performance,
- 31:24Speaker 2: you know, because he was able to impact the game
- 31:27Speaker 2: with his legs. Specifically, I thought the twenty eight yard
- 31:31Speaker 2: scramble was a really good run to get out and
- 31:34Speaker 2: then he makes the safety miss and get an extra
- 31:37Speaker 2: ten to fifteen yards there in the open field. And
- 31:39Speaker 2: of course the naked at the end is just you know,
- 31:42Speaker 2: that's going to go down in Patriot's history, especially if
- 31:45Speaker 2: they finish this off. So Drake made the runner really good,
- 31:49Speaker 2: and I think he's gonna have some opportunities against Seattle
- 31:52Speaker 2: because they tend to be aggressive with all those stunting
- 31:55Speaker 2: and the four man rushes that they run. They tend
- 31:58Speaker 2: to be aggressive with their way the way that they
- 32:00Speaker 2: pass rush. And when you play a guy like Matthew Stafford,
- 32:03Speaker 2: you can be aggressive because he can't move so right now,
- 32:06Speaker 2: hopefully Drake May is going to be able to get
- 32:08Speaker 2: out of the pocket and make some plays with his legs.
- 32:10Speaker 2: But I thought that Drake May at least made some
- 32:14Speaker 2: plays with his legs to give them some semblance of
- 32:17Speaker 2: offense in this game.
- 32:18Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's the value in it. You know. Again,
- 32:20Speaker 1: I'm somebody who just said I'd rather him run less
- 32:22Speaker 1: than more and just you know, keep him healthy and
- 32:25Speaker 1: things like that. But it's a great card to have
- 32:27Speaker 1: when you need it, and especially as the conditions deteriorated. Yeah,
- 32:32Speaker 1: I don't know if they win the game without his legs,
- 32:34Speaker 1: so it was great to see him do that. Hopefully
- 32:37Speaker 1: he could be more of a difference maker as a
- 32:39Speaker 1: thrower against Seattle, but just that threat, just having shown it,
- 32:42Speaker 1: it's now something they have to respect and it's going
- 32:45Speaker 1: to make them play defense differently.
- 32:47Speaker 2: Last one on offense, and then we'll get to your boy,
- 32:49Speaker 2: Lenny T. I just thought again, even though this was
- 32:52Speaker 2: not a great box score game for him, ramondre Stevenson,
- 32:56Speaker 2: I thought was nails in this game, you know, just really,
- 33:00Speaker 2: you know, we'll talk about the blitz pick up here
- 33:01Speaker 2: in a sect. Some of the blitz pickups he had
- 33:03Speaker 2: in this game were just phenomenal. But even some of
- 33:06Speaker 2: the dirty yards that he gained in the run game
- 33:08Speaker 2: when Denver really was not moving very much, he just
- 33:13Speaker 2: kind of carved out some eleven twelve yard runs, some
- 33:17Speaker 2: five yard runs that probably should have been you know,
- 33:20Speaker 2: no gain or one yard, and he's just fine increases
- 33:23Speaker 2: and you know, hitting the hole and pushing piles and
- 33:27Speaker 2: things like that. There's some really tough dirty running in
- 33:30Speaker 2: this game from rmondre Stevenson and then the blitz pick ups.
- 33:35Speaker 2: The blitz pick up. If you guys haven't seen this,
- 33:37Speaker 2: go back and watch ramondre Stevenson on the flee flicker.
- 33:40Speaker 2: That is one of the best blocks I've seen all year.
- 33:43Speaker 2: You know, he pitches the ball back to Drake May,
- 33:45Speaker 2: Alex Singleton blitzes right through the gap. He pitches the
- 33:49Speaker 2: ball back to Drake May, turns around, absorbs the contact
- 33:53Speaker 2: from Alex Singleton and saves the play. Like Drake May
- 33:56Speaker 2: probably should have been on his butt if it wasn't
- 33:58Speaker 2: for ramondre Stevenson and standing up Alex Singleton. There I wanted,
- 34:03Speaker 2: like I said, one of the best blocks I've seen
- 34:04Speaker 2: all year on tape from a running back, especially given
- 34:08Speaker 2: the fact that he had to you know, plea flicker
- 34:10Speaker 2: it back to Drake May. It wasn't like his eyes
- 34:13Speaker 2: were upfield the whole time. And he turns back around
- 34:15Speaker 2: and just you know, sits down and anchors and absorbs
- 34:18Speaker 2: the contact. He also on the twenty eight yard scramble,
- 34:21Speaker 2: which was one of their biggest plays in this game,
- 34:23Speaker 2: they run a little stunt on the left hand side
- 34:26Speaker 2: of the Patriots offensive line and ramondre Stevenson gets switched
- 34:30Speaker 2: on to Zack Allen somehow, and he bought Zach Allen. Yeah,
- 34:34Speaker 2: like he didn't he he died slowly, which is all
- 34:37Speaker 2: you need you ask for it. He won running back
- 34:40Speaker 2: in that situation. Drake May doesn't get out of the
- 34:42Speaker 2: pocket and pick up twenty eight yards on that scramble,
- 34:45Speaker 2: if ramondre Stevenson doesn't do that and pick up Zach
- 34:48Speaker 2: Allen and all Pro defensive tackle against a running back
- 34:51Speaker 2: and ramondre Stevenson survived down like that is an incredible
- 34:55Speaker 2: play by a running back. So looking ahead again a
- 34:58Speaker 2: little bit with Seattle, I mentioned all the gaming or
- 35:01Speaker 2: the stunting that they do up front. My Rabel mentioned
- 35:03Speaker 2: it yesterday. I would not be surprised one bit if
- 35:06Speaker 2: m Andre Stevenson's basically a sixth offensive lineman in a
- 35:09Speaker 2: lot of this game.
- 35:10Speaker 1: I go back to, do you remember in that draft
- 35:13Speaker 1: I some maybe it was you who said this. Somebody
- 35:15Speaker 1: said this that, like coming away from the Senior Bowl,
- 35:18Speaker 1: Ramondre Stevenson is like having an extra tackle on the field.
- 35:22Speaker 2: Yeah, it's incredible.
- 35:24Speaker 1: Somebody said that if you want. But you're really starting
- 35:27Speaker 1: to see that.
- 35:28Speaker 2: Especially on the interior. You know, they'll put him up
- 35:32Speaker 2: like in the line of scrimmage, like kind of right
- 35:34Speaker 2: in the in the.
- 35:35Speaker 1: A gap there a full back.
- 35:36Speaker 2: Yeah, and they what they're doing is like they're sliding
- 35:39Speaker 2: the line a particular way, and if somebody hits that gap,
- 35:42Speaker 2: then they just know Remondre Stevenson's there to pick it up.
- 35:46Speaker 2: And that's kind of what happened. Was Zach Allen like
- 35:48Speaker 2: looping around. I just can't. I can't. It's stress enough
- 35:51Speaker 2: how ridiculous it is to want as a running back.
- 35:55Speaker 1: I think they've done this a couple of times, but
- 35:56Speaker 1: like eventually they're gonna have one of those looks because
- 35:58Speaker 1: you know it's a tell once he goes up and
- 36:00Speaker 1: stands right behind it usually stands in the gap in
- 36:02Speaker 1: the a gap, right Yeah, Yeah, you're like, okay, it's
- 36:05Speaker 1: a pass play because Drake May is essentially now alone
- 36:08Speaker 1: in the shotgun that the check and release on that
- 36:11Speaker 1: that they hit eventually is going to go for a
- 36:12Speaker 1: big game.
- 36:13Speaker 2: Yeah, they and he'll He'll do that like if they
- 36:15Speaker 2: don't scheme the rush, if they don't blitz or they
- 36:19Speaker 2: don't stunt, like he'll kind of leak out late into
- 36:21Speaker 2: the pattern as a checkdown option there. I just think
- 36:25Speaker 2: that he's just been nails. I mean he's just been
- 36:27Speaker 2: really really good throughout this this entire playoff run, really
- 36:31Speaker 2: for the last like second.
- 36:32Speaker 1: Half since he was a toe injury, right yeah, ever
- 36:34Speaker 1: since he came back from that toe injury, he's playing
- 36:36Speaker 1: the best football of his life.
- 36:37Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been impressive. Last thing here on the good
- 36:40Speaker 2: list is, of course, the blocked field goal. Not not
- 36:43Speaker 2: really like anything super sexy about how they got it blocked,
- 36:46Speaker 2: but they just overloaded the left side of the protection there.
- 36:50Speaker 2: They put six guys on one side, which is the
- 36:52Speaker 2: maximum that you can put on one side of the
- 36:54Speaker 2: long snapper and they were able to two on one
- 36:58Speaker 2: the blocker there with Dirten and let Taylor and Leonard
- 37:01Speaker 2: Taylor ends up being the one. You know, Dirtan kind
- 37:03Speaker 2: of like took him out, you know, he kind of
- 37:05Speaker 2: went low. Leonard Taylor goes high and h leaps up
- 37:08Speaker 2: and gets the ball. What a story, you know, a
- 37:11Speaker 2: guy that's a practice squad elevation cut by the Jets,
- 37:15Speaker 2: picked up by the Patriots on the practice squad and
- 37:19Speaker 2: might have saved the season. He might have saved the season.
- 37:21Speaker 1: Isn't that? And I know that you have practice squad
- 37:23Speaker 1: elevations back then, but isn't that so textbook like Patriots
- 37:26Speaker 1: Dynasty that Yes, here's this defensive tackle that Bill. And
- 37:31Speaker 1: by the way we are I've seen some people in
- 37:32Speaker 1: YouTube wondering we are going to talk about Bill. Oh yeah,
- 37:34Speaker 1: we'll get to that's second our topic. But yeah, like
- 37:37Speaker 1: Bill fin the Jets cut this guy. Bill finds him
- 37:40Speaker 1: and he's just this gritty player and earns this little
- 37:43Speaker 1: role and carves it out and boom there he is
- 37:45Speaker 1: one of the biggest moments of the year making a
- 37:47Speaker 1: great play that that just feels so og Patriots Dynasty.
- 37:52Speaker 1: So credit to the credit to Leonard Taylor, great play.
- 37:55Speaker 2: Absolutely credit to him. Loved some of his quotes after
- 37:58Speaker 2: the game. Yeah, he was feeling that I was. I
- 38:01Speaker 2: asked him, like, was there anything that you guys saw
- 38:04Speaker 2: on film with their protection that you guys exploited or
- 38:07Speaker 2: anything like that. He was like, Nope, we just knocked
- 38:09Speaker 2: the dudes over. Like it wasn't anything fancy at all.
- 38:13Speaker 2: It wasn't like, you know, oh we knew the the
- 38:16Speaker 2: you know, snapper, the holder had this tail or. No,
- 38:19Speaker 2: it was literally just we were more physical at the
- 38:22Speaker 2: point of attack than they were. So really cool. So
- 38:25Speaker 2: there was, you know, plenty of of good things I
- 38:29Speaker 2: thought from the offense and the last one out. Did
- 38:32Speaker 2: I mention matc Collins? I didn't mention him yet. No.
- 38:34Speaker 1: I had last one Macs and it.
- 38:39Speaker 2: Has the two biggest pass plays of the game, you know,
- 38:41Speaker 2: the thirty one yard flee flicker and the twenty yard
- 38:43Speaker 2: incut that he had on third down. I thought the
- 38:45Speaker 2: twenty both those were Drake May's best throws of the game.
- 38:48Speaker 2: They were both to maccollins.
- 38:50Speaker 3: Uh.
- 38:50Speaker 2: The incut to him on third down was like, oh
- 38:52Speaker 2: mac collins is back right, Like that's like the mccollins around,
- 38:56Speaker 2: you know, so that was really good to see. I
- 38:59Speaker 2: thought his balking was a little bit rusty, but you know, overall,
- 39:02Speaker 2: it was good to see him back making big plays
- 39:05Speaker 2: for them in the passing game. The flee flicker was
- 39:08Speaker 2: a beauty. It was a really nice throw in a
- 39:11Speaker 2: good route, a good sell. This is a player that's
- 39:14Speaker 2: important to this offense, I think, you know, as we
- 39:16Speaker 2: move forward here a big picture with Drake May having
- 39:20Speaker 2: a six foot four you know, I like to call
- 39:23Speaker 2: him accuracy erasers, where like the ballplacement doesn't have to
- 39:26Speaker 2: be perfect because they have great catch radiuses. Although the
- 39:29Speaker 2: flea flicker was perfect, but in general you don't have
- 39:32Speaker 2: to have, you know, the most perfect accuracy because of
- 39:35Speaker 2: his catch radius and his size. Those seem to be
- 39:38Speaker 2: the type of guys that Drake May likes throwing too.
- 39:40Speaker 2: As you know, these big size, speed guys like Matt Collins.
- 39:44Speaker 2: So I would love to see them, you know, continue
- 39:46Speaker 2: with Matt Collins, of course, but you know, maybe try
- 39:49Speaker 2: to target some of those guys moving forward in the
- 39:51Speaker 2: draft or free agency or whatever. So good to see
- 39:53Speaker 2: Matt Collins back.
- 39:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I've done a little little peaking at the Senior Bowl.
- 39:57Speaker 1: Seems like there's some good size at receiver. It feels weird,
- 40:00Speaker 1: like that snuck up? Did it sneak up on you?
- 40:02Speaker 2: This year? I haven't paid a second of attention I.
- 40:05Speaker 1: Got, which is kind of it was so funny because
- 40:08Speaker 1: this has obviously been like a huge week for us
- 40:10Speaker 1: the last couple of years.
- 40:11Speaker 2: Yeah, and I've been there.
- 40:13Speaker 1: I've been in day at noon, I get an ESPN
- 40:16Speaker 1: alert like intrigue, get the Senior Bowl prospects to watch
- 40:18Speaker 1: for him, Like yeah, oh that's it's It is kind
- 40:22Speaker 1: of funny, just like how full circles thing has come.
- 40:25Speaker 1: Yeah that yeah, I mean I like to catch up
- 40:28Speaker 1: on it.
- 40:28Speaker 2: It's been fun I'm not like complaining about either. The
- 40:31Speaker 2: last couple of years. You know, we were in the
- 40:33Speaker 2: Shrine Bowl together. My first year working for the team
- 40:36Speaker 2: was at twenty twenty two, right twenty.
- 40:38Speaker 1: Three, twenty I think twenty three going into twenty three
- 40:42Speaker 1: February twenty three, and.
- 40:43Speaker 2: Then we were I've been at the Senior Bowl the
- 40:45Speaker 2: last two years since then, so I've been at all
- 40:48Speaker 2: these college all star games and things like that. And
- 40:51Speaker 2: when we were already onto the draft at this point,
- 40:53Speaker 2: and we've been doing it for It's going to be
- 40:55Speaker 2: a sprint this year. I know I'm all worried about it.
- 40:57Speaker 2: I'm not gonna We'll have time to catch up, all right,
- 41:01Speaker 2: that's a tomorrow problem. That's like a two weeks or
- 41:04Speaker 2: going to the bads here. We already kind of talked
- 41:08Speaker 2: about the REP. Yeah, I didn't mean to do it
- 41:11Speaker 2: like that. I kind of talked about the receiver separation
- 41:14Speaker 2: stuff in the past protection, which were two of the
- 41:17Speaker 2: things I highlighted just really quickly though. I thought they
- 41:20Speaker 2: you know, Stevenson did sneak out of the backfield with
- 41:23Speaker 2: Benito falling out of the rush on him on one play,
- 41:26Speaker 2: and that was like the one time that the scheme
- 41:29Speaker 2: kind of got the Patriots there on the left side.
- 41:31Speaker 3: Uh.
- 41:31Speaker 2: And now those are the reps that you don't want
- 41:34Speaker 2: to see. I you're gonna lose one on one against
- 41:37Speaker 2: good pass rushers. It's gonna happen.
- 41:39Speaker 1: You know.
- 41:39Speaker 2: Benito is gonna win a Rep. Zach Allen's gonna win
- 41:41Speaker 2: a Rep. Franklin Myers is gonna Rep win a Rep.
- 41:44Speaker 2: Cooper is gonna win a Rep. Those guys are good.
- 41:46Speaker 2: They're gonna win reps. You know, same thing with Seattle's
- 41:49Speaker 2: pass rush when they get one on ones. I don't
- 41:52Speaker 2: like seeing like scheme mental errors, right Like, I don't
- 41:57Speaker 2: like that. That That to me is where I have
- 42:00Speaker 2: a little bit of anxiousness about it. They had Ramandra
- 42:04Speaker 2: Stevenson on that deep corner route They've run it a
- 42:06Speaker 2: million times called scissors, you know most of the time,
- 42:09Speaker 2: where you have the vertical on the back side that
- 42:11Speaker 2: clears it out, and then Remandre just releases vertically out
- 42:14Speaker 2: of the backfield on like a little corner route, and
- 42:17Speaker 2: they got Benino to drop out of the rush off
- 42:19Speaker 2: the edge on him. It's the same exact throw that
- 42:21Speaker 2: Drake May made against the Jets for a touchdown pass
- 42:25Speaker 2: to Stevenson, same play, and they got it again. They
- 42:28Speaker 2: got the look again. Obviously, this one was covered a
- 42:31Speaker 2: little bit better because it's the Broncos and the APS
- 42:33Speaker 2: Championship game and not the Jets. But the throw was there,
- 42:37Speaker 2: and it was there, and they got confused there on
- 42:39Speaker 2: the left side Campbell and Wilson, and they left Roach.
- 42:42Speaker 2: Malcolm Roach, one of the biggest guys on their defensive line,
- 42:45Speaker 2: just came through unblocked and it blew up the play.
- 42:48Speaker 2: If that plays blocked, well, touchdown, I think you know,
- 42:51Speaker 2: I've seen Drake may make that throw in his sleep.
- 42:53Speaker 2: So that one was a little bit troubling. But we
- 42:56Speaker 2: kind of already talked about all that and one other
- 42:59Speaker 2: thing on the that I had just from a defensive perspective,
- 43:02Speaker 2: they were not great in zone coverage in this game
- 43:04Speaker 2: at times, especially not great in quarters. And the reason
- 43:08Speaker 2: why I bring this up is not to hammer the
- 43:11Speaker 2: defense after they just gave up seven points in the
- 43:13Speaker 2: ADS Championship game. I bring it up because against these
- 43:16Speaker 2: West Coast offenses that they're going to face in the
- 43:18Speaker 2: Super Bowl of Seattle, quarters is usually the kryptonite for
- 43:22Speaker 2: that So if you want to play whether it's Shanahan McVeigh,
- 43:26Speaker 2: you know, super Bowl fifty three, it's like quarters three buzzes,
- 43:29Speaker 2: like the game plan for the Patriots. I expect them
- 43:32Speaker 2: to want to play a lot of quarters in the
- 43:35Speaker 2: game in Super Bowl sixty. It's just the way that
- 43:38Speaker 2: that system kind of plays out. And we can talk
- 43:40Speaker 2: about next week or later today why that is. But
- 43:45Speaker 2: in this game, Jared Sidham four for five sixty nine
- 43:48Speaker 2: yards passing, including the fifty two yard bomb to Marvin
- 43:51Speaker 2: Mims all came against quarters, so he was it was
- 43:55Speaker 2: his most successful. They gave up a third down play
- 43:58Speaker 2: in quarters to Lil Jordan Humphrey where they didn't play
- 44:00Speaker 2: the flat very well. They didn't exchange the flat very
- 44:03Speaker 2: well there with Marcus Jones and Carlton Davis. The bomb
- 44:07Speaker 2: was on quarters on the bomb is really quickly to
- 44:11Speaker 2: the one on Mims. I know Jalen Hawkins is catching
- 44:15Speaker 2: some heat for that play. I don't think that that's
- 44:17Speaker 2: on Jalen Hawkins. It looks to me like they're playing
- 44:20Speaker 2: what's called poach, which is a match quarters call where
- 44:25Speaker 2: the backside safety or the weak safety there, which is Hawkins,
- 44:29Speaker 2: He's got his eyes and his body open to the
- 44:32Speaker 2: three receiver side. It's a three by one check to quarters.
- 44:36Speaker 2: So he's looking at number three to the passing straight
- 44:40Speaker 2: meaning the inside slot receiver to that side of the field.
- 44:44Speaker 2: When that slot receiver, which he does, he runs a
- 44:47Speaker 2: vertical across the field, it's Jalen Hawkins's job to match
- 44:51Speaker 2: that route, so he's not helped to Christian Gonzalez. Christian
- 44:54Speaker 2: Gonzalez on the backsides one on one with Marvin Mims.
- 44:58Speaker 2: So what I think happened is that when they motioned,
- 45:03Speaker 2: they motioned at the last second right before the snap
- 45:06Speaker 2: Denver did and they motioned the receiver from two by
- 45:09Speaker 2: two to three by one, And when they motioned to
- 45:11Speaker 2: three by one, it seemed like Jalen Hawkins kind of
- 45:15Speaker 2: checked in his head into into Poach into the quarters check,
- 45:20Speaker 2: and Christian Gonzales might not have gotten the message that
- 45:23Speaker 2: they were checking into Poacher straight quarters there. So I
- 45:27Speaker 2: think it might have been a little bit of a
- 45:28Speaker 2: miscommunication in terms of where Gonzales thought his help was
- 45:31Speaker 2: coming from. But at the end of the day, wants
- 45:33Speaker 2: to play kind of was ball snapped and the play unfolded,
- 45:36Speaker 2: you know, he just got beat like he just the
- 45:37Speaker 2: guy just ran by him, you know, Mams just beat
- 45:40Speaker 2: him over the top. So I just wanted to kind
- 45:43Speaker 2: of explain that because I know that a lot of
- 45:44Speaker 2: people think he was passing the route off to Jalen Hawkins,
- 45:47Speaker 2: which just based off the coverage and the look that
- 45:50Speaker 2: Jalen Hawkins was the technique I should say that he
- 45:52Speaker 2: was playing. It just didn't really make much sense that
- 45:55Speaker 2: would have been the case. So I think they have
- 45:57Speaker 2: to kind of go into the lab a little bit
- 45:59Speaker 2: here in the next ten days and just make sure
- 46:02Speaker 2: that they're really buttoned up in their quarters looks, because
- 46:06Speaker 2: I think they're gonna have to call a decent amount
- 46:08Speaker 2: of split safety zone, whether it's cover two or quarters
- 46:11Speaker 2: against the Seattle offense. The stuff that gets you beat.
- 46:15Speaker 2: I had one thing on here. It's just Drake made
- 46:17Speaker 2: the passer, you know, whatever it is, shoulder fatigue, just
- 46:22Speaker 2: good defense, bad weather, like whatever doll Is chocked up
- 46:25Speaker 2: to me, got throw the ball better exactly. You know
- 46:29Speaker 2: that that's really what it is. You know, I had
- 46:31Speaker 2: five throws in this game that I thought were arerant,
- 46:34Speaker 2: you know, inaccurate passes. You could argue six. And then
- 46:38Speaker 2: I also had to turnover worthy play where he put
- 46:40Speaker 2: threw the ball to Ufunga, And yeah, he was fooled
- 46:43Speaker 2: on that one. That wasn't necessarily like a bad throw.
- 46:46Speaker 2: That was you know, he got he got beat us
- 46:48Speaker 2: schematically with that throw. But you know, he short armed
- 46:51Speaker 2: to check down to Remondre in the flat, which wasn't
- 46:54Speaker 2: going to be a first down, but it was just
- 46:56Speaker 2: he's still short armed it. You know, he I thought
- 46:59Speaker 2: he was kind of and high to pop Douglas on
- 47:01Speaker 2: that whole shot.
- 47:02Speaker 1: Yeah, it's usually automatic.
- 47:03Speaker 2: Yeah. Later in the game, the dig route to Booty
- 47:07Speaker 2: before halftime short armed it threw him a dirt ball.
- 47:11Speaker 2: He also missed a load of Booty again on that
- 47:14Speaker 2: glance route off to play action play that the ball
- 47:16Speaker 2: just went straight down. And then he sprayed an out
- 47:19Speaker 2: to Booty as well on a drive that they ended
- 47:22Speaker 2: up not scoring on I think right or kicking a
- 47:24Speaker 2: field goal there isn't. I think it was the nine
- 47:26Speaker 2: minute drive. So all of these throws just uncharacteristic misses,
- 47:32Speaker 2: you know, Hunter Henry dropped one, But I also thought
- 47:34Speaker 2: that one was like kind of like a mini spray,
- 47:36Speaker 2: where like it wasn't really on the body, it was
- 47:38Speaker 2: kind of outside his frame. Probably still should have caught it.
- 47:42Speaker 2: But overall, you know, he's just got to throw the
- 47:44Speaker 2: ball better. Like if they're gonna be in Seattle, this
- 47:46Speaker 2: is not gonna get be good enough.
- 47:47Speaker 1: I'll add one more that gets you beat Yep, Bryce
- 47:51Speaker 1: Behinger needs to be better. That was altitude.
- 47:54Speaker 2: That's a good point.
- 47:55Speaker 1: I even before the snow, he was struggling the kickers,
- 47:58Speaker 1: I give more of a break. They were both struggling.
- 48:00Speaker 1: That was a tough day to kick. Also another really
- 48:04Speaker 1: good reminder right out of Vin Terry should have been
- 48:05Speaker 1: a first ballot Hall of Famer because that's.
- 48:07Speaker 2: Not We'll get to that, we'll get to to.
- 48:10Speaker 1: But yeah, just too many, like multiple shanks from Bearinger
- 48:15Speaker 1: and you saw their punter kicking while on the same conditions.
- 48:18Speaker 2: And yeah, so I was watching the game in the
- 48:20Speaker 2: press box with no socks who you you know as well,
- 48:24Speaker 2: and no socks. It was me, no socks, Fred, you
- 48:29Speaker 2: know up there in the press box. And obviously we
- 48:32Speaker 2: were talking about Bearinger's struggles. But the last punt that
- 48:37Speaker 2: he had, I want to say it was the last one,
- 48:39Speaker 2: or maybe it was the one out of the end zone.
- 48:42Speaker 2: I think it was the last one because it was
- 48:43Speaker 2: a little it was a little bit further out. It
- 48:45Speaker 2: wasn't out of the end zone. It was like thirty
- 48:47Speaker 2: something yards and everybody was killing them obviously for the punt.
- 48:51Speaker 2: The one thing I'll say in his defense, the one
- 48:54Speaker 2: thing that I thought in the moment was you cannot
- 48:56Speaker 2: let Marvinie touch.
- 48:58Speaker 1: But I do think there was an element.
- 48:59Speaker 2: Of Marvin Mims was the only way that they were
- 49:02Speaker 2: going to score.
- 49:03Speaker 1: I do think there was an element of kicking away
- 49:05Speaker 1: from Marvin Mims had to have that might have been
- 49:08Speaker 1: you know, I factor that into him struggling, but also
- 49:11Speaker 1: like he's got such a strong leg, that's his trait,
- 49:15Speaker 1: get it as far as you can and out of bounds,
- 49:17Speaker 1: So that kind of thing instead of just doing the
- 49:18Speaker 1: pop up fair enough.
- 49:19Speaker 2: Now, the other thing I would mention is that at
- 49:22Speaker 2: that point in the game, they were kicking into the wind.
- 49:25Speaker 1: Yeah, and the wind was this This is more of
- 49:26Speaker 1: the whole game. This isn't just just the he had
- 49:29Speaker 1: other ones earlier.
- 49:30Speaker 2: I'm just trying to, you know, tell the whole picture here.
- 49:33Speaker 2: I'm with you that it was not a good game.
- 49:35Speaker 1: I do I do like I do think party was
- 49:39Speaker 1: kicking away from Mims.
- 49:40Speaker 2: You absolutely like they're the only thing. And it kind
- 49:43Speaker 2: of gave me flashbacks to that Jets Patriots game when
- 49:45Speaker 2: Marcus Jones house the punt return to win the game. Yea,
- 49:48Speaker 2: the only way the Patriots were going to give up
- 49:50Speaker 2: a touchdown in that game was Marvin Mims hunt housing
- 49:52Speaker 2: a punt return like it was the only way.
- 49:55Speaker 1: No. I think we talked about I talked about on
- 49:56Speaker 1: some previous kickoffs too. I said, kick the ball out
- 49:58Speaker 1: of the end zone. Don't let mim right and there
- 50:00Speaker 1: by the way, it's gonna be a thing again with Rashichi.
- 50:03Speaker 1: So yeah, we do have another coaching opening field. Uh oh,
- 50:08Speaker 1: you want to update on that. The Cleveland Browns have
- 50:10Speaker 1: hired Todd Monk.
- 50:12Speaker 2: Wow, that's out of nowhere. I didn't like. I knew
- 50:16Speaker 2: he was kind of a hot after Lamar's MVP season, but.
- 50:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I've had trouble following the interviews. But so he
- 50:23Speaker 1: stays in the AFC North.
- 50:24Speaker 2: I feel like that's kind of a out of left field.
- 50:27Speaker 1: One is that, like, the candidate we want is in here,
- 50:29Speaker 1: so we're gonna hire this old guy for a couple
- 50:31Speaker 1: of years and.
- 50:32Speaker 2: Probably like that feels like one that maybe would have
- 50:34Speaker 2: made more sense last year after Lamar won MVP or
- 50:39Speaker 2: had the season he had. He didn't famously didn't win MVP.
- 50:42Speaker 2: Sorry I should have won MVP, but you know, after
- 50:45Speaker 2: Lamar's MVP caliber season put it to you that way.
- 50:49Speaker 2: But interesting, Yeah, and they are.
- 50:52Speaker 1: Jim Schwartz is still under contract and quote the team
- 50:55Speaker 1: wants him to stay, according to Schefter.
- 50:57Speaker 2: Interesting that one is on my mind a little bit
- 51:00Speaker 2: with Jim Schwartz if he needs like a gap year
- 51:02Speaker 2: stop with his relationship with Mike rabel as sort of
- 51:06Speaker 2: like a senior defensive assistant, just to help a young
- 51:08Speaker 2: coordinator like Zach Kor out. It would be interesting some
- 51:12Speaker 2: of the coaching stuffs on my list of second hour
- 51:15Speaker 2: topics as well, because we got to talk a little
- 51:16Speaker 2: bit about the Bills, and I also want to like
- 51:19Speaker 2: really talk like really briefly about Tanner ex Strand and
- 51:23Speaker 2: with the Jets wait so long to I thought he
- 51:26Speaker 2: was like the only good thing about that Jets team
- 51:28Speaker 2: watching their film twice, which was painful. The only thing
- 51:32Speaker 2: that I thought that the Jets did well last year
- 51:34Speaker 2: is I thought their scheme offensively was pretty solid. Yeah yeah,
- 51:39Speaker 2: and then like even with justin fields like they got,
- 51:42Speaker 2: they they did what they could with a limited quarterback,
- 51:45Speaker 2: you know, likecos Yeah, I mean Week one against Pittsburgh,
- 51:49Speaker 2: like that was a legitimately good film from an offensive coordinator.
- 51:53Speaker 2: So I thought that that was weird. So we'll get
- 51:55Speaker 2: to all that in the second hour, and of course
- 51:57Speaker 2: we'll get to the Bill Belichick news here after the break.
- 51:59Speaker 2: We're gonna make a quick break and then we'll be
- 52:01Speaker 2: right back.

- 54:07Speaker 2: of the show. UH, and we're going to talk about
- 54:09Speaker 2: some of these news and notes, do a little Seattle preview.
- 54:12Speaker 2: We're going to also open the calls and the emails.
- 54:14Speaker 2: Has got a bunch of emails coming in. Uh eight
- 54:17Speaker 2: five to five pats five hundred is the phone number.
- 54:20Speaker 2: I feel like some people have now caught on that
- 54:23Speaker 2: we don't do calls. The first hour of the show,
- 54:25Speaker 2: which I really appreciate. So if you want to call
- 54:27Speaker 2: it now, then go right ahead and we'll get you
- 54:30Speaker 2: on the air. But before we open it up, Alex,
- 54:33Speaker 2: I just want to clear the floor here a little
- 54:36Speaker 2: bit for us to talk about Bill Belichick getting snubbed
- 54:38Speaker 2: as a first ballot Hall of Famer. This is something
- 54:42Speaker 2: that frankly, I I want to be measured with because
- 54:47Speaker 2: I get fired up about it.
- 54:48Speaker 1: All Right, if you want to stay measured, to go
- 54:51Speaker 1: for it, I won't be.
- 54:52Speaker 2: I get measured. I got I get fired up about
- 54:55Speaker 2: this because I'm not usually the guy that's as everybody
- 55:01Speaker 2: hates the Patriots and y'all like, and.
- 55:03Speaker 1: You're also you're such a Blair history of the game, and.
- 55:08Speaker 2: That's not usually my angle, And that's why I think it,
- 55:13Speaker 2: you know, even more like I feel like this is
- 55:16Speaker 2: kind of has more credence because I feel so strongly
- 55:21Speaker 2: that the Pro Football Hall of Fame for years now
- 55:25Speaker 2: has had this anti Patriots bias towards the dynasty that
- 55:31Speaker 2: I just can't really understand. And it's one thing to
- 55:36Speaker 2: drag Rodney Harrison through the mud. It's one thing to
- 55:40Speaker 2: leave Adam Vin Terry who is a place kicker off
- 55:42Speaker 2: the first bat. No, just relax. It's one thing to
- 55:46Speaker 2: do all that kind of stuff, because you know what
- 55:49Speaker 2: I it's it should be hard to get into the
- 55:52Speaker 2: Pro Football Hall of Fame. All those types of things
- 55:55Speaker 2: I have bothered me, but nothing, Nothing has bothered me
- 56:01Speaker 2: more than hearing this news about Bill Belichick. This is
- 56:05Speaker 2: embarrassing for the Hall of Fame, flat out, and there's
- 56:09Speaker 2: absolutely no good argument for it. It's out of pettiness,
- 56:13Speaker 2: is what it is. It's out of some disdain for
- 56:16Speaker 2: the man, either because he dominated your favorite team, or
- 56:22Speaker 2: he wasn't nice to you at you know, the owner's
- 56:24Speaker 2: meetings or something like that. This has nothing to do
- 56:28Speaker 2: with his resume, has nothing to do with what he's
- 56:30Speaker 2: accomplished on the field. This is all political that he
- 56:34Speaker 2: is not being put into the Hall of Fame on
- 56:36Speaker 2: the first ballot. And I personally feel and this is
- 56:40Speaker 2: not Gary Myers because I want to publicly shame these
- 56:44Speaker 2: people or you know, their house, I think, is what
- 56:48Speaker 2: he said. This is because there needs to be accountability
- 56:52Speaker 2: for this process because time and time again, this voting
- 56:57Speaker 2: body has left people that are Locke Hall of Famers
- 57:03Speaker 2: out of the Hall of Fame for reasons that are
- 57:06Speaker 2: not football related, and it's not just Patriots, but it's
- 57:10Speaker 2: happening a lot with Patriots, with mister Kraft, with Bill Belichick,
- 57:15Speaker 2: with Adam van Terry, which I don't know what you
- 57:18Speaker 2: have against Adam van Ry, Like, I don't understand that
- 57:20Speaker 2: one at all. But even you know, this voting body
- 57:23Speaker 2: is the same voting body that took three years to
- 57:26Speaker 2: put Terrell Owens in the Hall of Fame, that last
- 57:28Speaker 2: year did not have Luke Keighley on the Hall of
- 57:31Speaker 2: Fame ballot. You know this is not just Patriots. So
- 57:35Speaker 2: at this point to the Hall of Fame voters, the
- 57:37Speaker 2: reason why we want names is because you've lost the
- 57:41Speaker 2: trust of the public to get this right. That's what
- 57:43Speaker 2: it is. It's not because we want to publicly shame
- 57:47Speaker 2: you for getting it wrong. It's because you no longer
- 57:51Speaker 2: have the trust of the public that you are going
- 57:54Speaker 2: to vote correctly, and so you've lost that, You've lost
- 57:57Speaker 2: that privilege of animity. It's so much easy you're to
- 58:00Speaker 2: hide behind that. And so this I think the one
- 58:03Speaker 2: solace that I have in all of this, because there's
- 58:06Speaker 2: not very much because this is a sad day yesterday
- 58:08Speaker 2: for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
- 58:10Speaker 1: Sad day for the sport.
- 58:11Speaker 2: The one thing that I would say that gives me
- 58:15Speaker 2: some hope is no one has argued the other side
- 58:20Speaker 2: that means anything, Like I'm not talking about some random
- 58:23Speaker 2: guy on Twitter. I'm talking about the outpouring support of
- 58:27Speaker 2: how did this happen? Has been pretty remarkable, Like it's
- 58:32Speaker 2: really been unanimous.
- 58:33Speaker 1: For somebody who like pissed off a lot of the league. Yeah,
- 58:37Speaker 1: but he did it because he was great. And at
- 58:39Speaker 1: the end of the day, as much as they hate
- 58:41Speaker 1: I'm sorry to cutch off you find this, but as
- 58:42Speaker 1: much as they hated him, and yeah, other teams had
- 58:45Speaker 1: a right hate Bill Belichick and kick their ass up
- 58:47Speaker 1: and down, right, but they respect They recognized and respected
- 58:50Speaker 1: how great he was what he did, and that's what
- 58:52Speaker 1: it's a It's about respect.
- 58:54Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, this is not This is not a This
- 58:57Speaker 2: is not like a small thing. This is the most
- 59:01Speaker 2: prestigious honor in the sport and for a guy, this
- 59:04Speaker 2: is not a small thing.
- 59:05Speaker 1: You because I got a hole.
- 59:07Speaker 2: It's okay, Yeah, I'll let you go in a second.
- 59:09Speaker 2: This is not this is not a small thing that
- 59:11Speaker 2: you're voting on here, you need to This is not, uh,
- 59:14Speaker 2: you know, the the jelly of the month club that
- 59:16Speaker 2: he's getting voted into. This is the Pro Football Hall
- 59:19Speaker 2: of Fame, and my opinion is the most prestigious honor
- 59:22Speaker 2: that any player or coach could be given in the sport.
- 59:26Speaker 1: It is not and that's exactly what it is. And
- 59:29Speaker 1: it is not your opportunities a voter to settle a score, right,
- 59:36Speaker 1: are you go ahead? So you called it embarrassment, it is.
- 59:41Speaker 1: It's disqualifying. As far as I'm concerned, today pro football
- 59:44Speaker 1: has no Hall of Fame.
- 59:46Speaker 2: I love it.
- 59:47Speaker 1: Because if that guy's look. Part of the reason historically
- 59:51Speaker 1: the Pro Football Hall of Fame was good is it
- 59:52Speaker 1: had a higher bar than baseball in basketball, I admittedly
- 59:55Speaker 1: don't know a ton about the hockey Hall of Fame,
- 59:57Speaker 1: but it had a higher bar. But if that is
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: so high that Bill Belichick, oh, you cannot get in,
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: it's disqualifying. And credit to the voters who voted for him,
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: who have come out, who have broken the protocol and
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: said they did and called out their fellow voters who
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: didn't appreciate you. But that entire body right now has
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: a massive black mark on it. Bill Belichick is the
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: biggest snub from any Hall of Fame in all of sports.
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: I believe he is bigger than Bonds. I believe he
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: is bigger than Rose. I know some people that's not
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: technically a snub, whatever, he is the biggest Hall of
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: Fame snub in all of sports. Even if he gets
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: in next year, he will never be a first ballot
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: Hall of Famer, And that is wrong. It is the
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: job of that voting body in that institution to be
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: stewards for the history of this sport as a hallowed responsibility.
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: And there is no bigger historian of this sport, no
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: bigger history appreciator of the history of the sport than
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: Bill Belichick.
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: They have and that part of it too. Like the
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: guy that you know did the NFL one hundred and
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: it was part of the centennial team selection. And I
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: remember a couple of years ago when they played the
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: Browns in Cleveland, and part of his speech after the
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: game was it was the Bailey Zappy game in Cleveland.
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: He talked about Jim Brown.
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: So he told the players first, he told the players
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: that they should go out and look at the Ring
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: of Honor in Cleveland because of all of the big
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: games that are up there. Then when we left the
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: left the stadium, they stopped the buses outside the Jim
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: Brown statue and had everybody get off the buses, the
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: players and stuff, to go look at the Jim Brown statue.
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: This is a man that loves the history of the game. Yeah,
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: and cares deeply about the history of the game. And
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: if there's anybody that deserves to be into the Pro
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: Football Hall of Fame, I don't know anybody more deserving
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: than Bill bobichel accomplishment and just on the history, his
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: impact on the history of the game.
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: I always kind of wondered that we always sort of
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: did the thing when Bill Belichick retires, what's he gonna do?
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: Is he gonna go coach high school across? Is he
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: gonna do this or that?
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: Yeah? I always part of.
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: Me always thought he'd go run the Hall of Fame. Yeah,
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: he's probably the most qualified person to do it, right,
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: But they won't put him in. And I've I've longstanding
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: had an issue with this body in this voting body exactly.
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: You know, this is their most egregious for a few years.
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: I think they can't sink lower than this. They can't
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: possibly I forget, if I can swear on the show,
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: they can't possibly f up worse than this sink. And
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: you know what I say this half jokingly, Evan, is
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: Tom Brady gonna get in on the first ballot?
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: I don't know. I mean the fact that we even
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: have to ask that, the fact that qualifying they've held
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: it against mister Kraft, They've held it against Bill, so like,
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: how could how could they not? Right? Like, the only
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: way that you don't is that the difference is that
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: he's a player, right, Like it's in most of the time,
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: the player aspect of it changes it like that, That is,
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: they have a little bit more of a different milk.
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: I don't want to say that, Like, it's almost like
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: you can't put him in first ballot now because it
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: just makes this one look even worse.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: Well, I would just say that on top of all
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: the things that we've said. Yeah, the other part of
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: this that I think is also disappointing is that now
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: this whole process moving forward, including the candidates that do
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: get in next week, it's all it's all tainted, tainted,
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: it's all the Hall of the Pro Football Hall of.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: Fame as it stands today is tainted, right, and that's no.
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: And it's going to be anybody five or six guys
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: that get in next week.
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: Can be unfair. Not that it's going to fix anything.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: I know this isn't exactly how the voting works, but
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: last year they the by rules which are broken in
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: their own right. And part of this is the broken system.
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: But if you're the voters, push to fix the system,
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: they have to put in between four and eight people
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: each year. If it's less than eight this year and
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: there's an empty spot when Bill Belichick didn't get in,
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: holy crap. They what a horrible a cherry on top
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: of the absolute s Sunday that this is. And to
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: go back to your point, Adam n Arry not getting
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: in I thought was a new low. The all time
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: leader in the history of sport, the great. I don't
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: care what his position is. He's the greatest ever to
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: do it. And kicking in the snow ain't easy. Yeah,
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: and playing football for twenty something years ain't easy, and
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: he did that. And I don't want to just make
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: this Patriots thing because it's not. Everybody should be upset
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: about this. You mentioned Luke Keighley Luke Keighley. Yeah, he
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: played because the Hall. It's all these personal agendas about well,
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: longevity should matter. I didn't like this team or I
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: didn't like this player. Sure, Luke Keigley had a little
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: bit short of her career than the most seven years.
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: He was an All Pro all seven years.
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: Jesus Christ.
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: Whatever, they're moving out there, And I keep going back
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: to this saying Evan, when I think about this, I
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: know what I say saw. We as fans know what
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: we saw. I watched Louke Keigley. That's a Hall If
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: that's not a Hall of Fame player, I don't know
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: what is. What's the point you mentioned Terrell Owens earlier,
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: significantly significant, probably might be a top five receiver all time.
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: Left off took him three years, took them.
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: Three years, Marvin Harrison with lesser numbers, but he was
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: on those Darling Golds teams right, gets in first bats.
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: So you know I'm big on that.
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: That's want to ask something on Owen's real quick? Yeah,
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: I actually I'd forgotten about this until last night when
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: I was looking this up. Terrell Owens didn't go to
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: the induction. Terrell Owens was so upset and angry that
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: he didn't get in. He went back to Chattanooga instead,
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: where he played his college football. Yeah, and gave a
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: speech there, and he said at the time, this is
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: not about not being inducted on the first or second ballot.
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: It's about the process in which guys are nominated and
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: ultimately inducted. There was a flaw in that system. So
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: this is not only about me, but it's about the
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: guys that went before me that's going to come after me.
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: And I can make a stand for those guys so
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: they won't have to go through the situation now ten
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: years ago. About ten years ago, I for things that
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: here is about ten years He is exactly right, and
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: this thing has been flawed for a long time and
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: it should never have come to this. But it should
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: not get past this. There should be major reform. This
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: is a you know how I am about the history
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: of the sport and how cannot get romantic about football
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: all that. This is a black eye on the game
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: itself and the voter should be ashamed.
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I disagree with that. I mean, you said, I
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: think it's really I've I've had this like personal thing
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: with the Pro Football Hall of Fame for a while
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: because I think for me, and I'm gonna sound a
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: little bit obnoxious per usual here, but for me it's twofold.
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: One of it is the lack of transparency from the
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: voting body is extremely annoying and frustrating because they put
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: their nose up to some of the greats of the
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: game like Bill Belichie, like Terrell Owens, like Adam Vinitaria,
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: like Luke Keekley, and they do it on the with
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: the ability to hide from the public and not have
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: to own their vote, which I think is a big
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: reason why you get like this, like petty nonsense like
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: we got with Bill Belichick, because they don't need to
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: answer to anybody for this, so they don't vote based
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: off of an impartial, unbiased view. They vote based off
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: of emotion and personal vendettas because they don't need to
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: disclose their vote, so no one's going to call them
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: out for it because they can hide. Okay, that's one thing.
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: The other thing, and now is gonna sound obnoxious, and
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: I get that. The other thing that I have an
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: issue with the Pro Football Hall of Fame within the
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: voting body is that, yes, a lot of the people
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: that are part of the community that vote or the
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: committee that vote, have a good historical perspective on the game.
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: Because most of them are old as dirt, they have
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: a good historical perspective. I strongly question their football acumen
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: and they are actual.
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: Football put on the tape.
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: Yes, I understand that you've covered the game for generations,
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: and you understand how to compare players from eras and
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: all that, and all that deserves a spot in the process,
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: and that's why there are media members in the process.
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: But to sit here and vote on some of the
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: best players of their generation for Hall of Fame candidacies
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: or coaches and not really fully understand what the job
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: of that individual player or coach is is a problem,
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: which is why there needs to be more people, in
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: my opinion, that played or coached the game. Not Bill
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: Pollian's of the world, by the way, but people that
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: can be impartial about it, because frankly, like if you
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: if you can't break down cover two, then I don't
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: really care about what your football opinion is.
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: It's a great point, and this is obviously not a
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: Belichick issue, but it's impacted some of the other Patriots
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: and a lot of other players. The Hall has free
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: over a decade now. It's very much the traditional definition
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: of positions, looking at the box score and how we're used, right,
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: So that's why it took so long to get like
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: a Richard Seymour Randall.
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: That's why Vince will Fork is not up for consideration.
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: Like if you know ball, you know how valuable Vince
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: Wilfork was to the entire operation for.
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: The It's but it's not even just the positional value
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: thing like with will Fork or Vina Terry. If you
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: play wide receiver, the Hall of Fame is looking for
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: six foot three winds up at the X, you know,
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: eighty catches, one thousand yards fifteen yards of catch. They
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: because that's the only way that position was played for
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: years and years and years. And as we come fifteen
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: years removed now from that Arab specialization that kicked off
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: midway through the two thousands, they'll look at even Wes Welker,
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: who's a great slot receiver, they don't look at that
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: as a separate position. They just see him as a
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: guy that wasn't a textbook wide receiver, so he's not
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: in I've been a long proponent of Larry centers, and
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: that might go over some people's heads. Larry Centers wasn't
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: that great. Go look at the historical context of Larry
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: Centers as a pass catcher. He was catching one hundred
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: passes in a season, a decade before any other running
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: back did it. Like you look at the list of
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: pass catching running backs, the truly elite ones. It's Tomlinson
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: Hall of Famer. I think we all agree. McCaffrey is
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: Thompson in yet is he eligible? Okay, McCaffrey's going to
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: get in. Matt Forte is on the bubble, but like
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: ten years before them, is Larry Centers. But he's a
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: fullback and it's not a running back's job to catch
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: passes because it's nineteen eighty five, and so he's not in.
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: When we get to like Devin Hester right away to year,
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: but because he wasn't a great corner receiver, because returner
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: is not a real position. When we get to Matthew Slater,
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: we're going to do this again too.
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: I mean, good luck. They can't even get Bill Belichick
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: in the Hall of Fame or mister Kraft, We're not
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: going to get Matthew Slater.
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: But like this has been a big problem the way
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: I feel like the vote. And again this isn't all,
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: but it's enough to excuse the results. They and this
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: is separate from Belichick, but well, we're on it. Let's
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: do it. They use a dated view of the game
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: and it coming out of the age of specialization. Is
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: so damaging to do that.
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, last point here on the Hall of Fame
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: and then and then we'll move on unless you guys
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: bring it up. The other thing that might bring it up,
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: that always goes gets under my skin. And I've done
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: this research and I have these numbers at the ready
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: for things like this is when you look at the
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: great dynasties of the modern era. I'm not going I'm sorry,
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: I'm not going back to autogram or a bart star
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: in Vince Lambard.
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: The super bowler is perfectly fair.
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not.
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: But I think those Packers teams do support your argument.
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: So from nineteen seventy on is where I'm at. AFL,
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: NFL merger, post merger, nineteen seventy Steelers, the freaking ball
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: boys in the Hall of Fame for that team, they
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: have ten Hall of Famers, ten Hall.
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: Of Fame players plus coach and owners ten right, Yes, so.
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: Ten Hall of Famers ten on that nineteen seventies Steelers team.
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: That is insane. Ten. The Patriots have two from the dynasty,
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: and the way that we're going right now, it's probably
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: just gonna be Brady and maybe Gronk.
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: Right like that, that and Seymour and law.
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: Yeah, that the two that they currently have the nineteen
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: seventies Steelers.
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: We don't even know if will get it.
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: I don't know what doing right. I said that last
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: night to I was like, I don't know.
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: I don't know, Frankly, if Kikley doesn't get it, and
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: how much longer did Gronk play the day ten.
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: Hall of Famers players? Les is in the Hall of Fame?
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: Aren't Rooney is in the Hall of Fame? Okay?
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: And I understand I don't. It's not I don't want
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: to speak for you.
- 1:13:04Speaker 4: Like.
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: That's not to say that some of those guys don't
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: deserve me.
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: Most of them do. Most of them do. But my
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: point is is that they are the Patriots. They are
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: being recognized for their their dominance in that decade of
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: the NFL. Okay, and the Patriots had two decades worth
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: of dominance and can barely get their coach into the
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: Hall of Fame. So this seventy Steelers had ten you know,
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: the players, plus coach plus owner. You'd know that one
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: goes right up my backside. It has for years. The
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: fry cook in the kitchen of the Pittsburgh Steelers facility
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: in nineteen seventy probably could get into the Hall of
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: Fame before Bill Belichick. It is ridiculous, ridiculous. And let's
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: also just mention with the seventies Steelers, the one guy
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: that always comes up is Lin Swan, right, who did
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: not have great numbers in the regular season, had some
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: really really big playoff moments and is in the Hall
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: of Fame. I could say the same exact thing for
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: William mcgi who's the all time playoff leader in sacks.
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: I could say the same exact thing for Julian Edelman,
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: who has a Super Bowl MVP. Yeah right, all those guys.
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: Edelman especially has comparable statistics to Lynn Swan, has the
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: playoff performance that Lynn Swan had, and is not even
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: going to come close to sniffing the Hall of Fame.
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: And don't I don't think Edelman's a Hall of Famer.
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: But the point is if you let those guys in
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: because they played for Pittsburgh. Then you have to have
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: the same criteria for the Patriots players. It's not that
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: I think Edelman or williamc. Ginnis should be in the
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: Hall of Fame. It's that it's not equal between teams.
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: I also looked at the nineteen eighties San Francisco forty
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: nine Ers. They have six players plus Bill Walsh, plus
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: their owner during that time period who bought the team
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: in the I think nineteen eighty or nineteen seventy nine
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: or something like that. All of them are in the Hall,
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: all of them. All of them are in the Hall
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: of Fame. The nineteen nineties Cowboys six plays plus coach
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: Jimmy Johnson plus owner Jerry Jones. Right, so all of
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: these teams, all these dynastic teams of the modern era
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: in the NFL, they're like slam dunk Hall of Famers
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: are slam dunk Hall of Famers. Like that was not
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: a situation like we're seeing with the Patriots.
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: By the way, shout out Jimmy Johnson, who's been pounding
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: the tablechick like a.
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: Guy like for example, you know, just to you know,
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: give another example, a guy like Rodney Harrison. If you
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: played for the nineteen seventy Steelers, probably would have been
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: like a first round second, right like that. That's the point,
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: And this is I don't know, I don't I'm not
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: inside these people's heads. But at this point, with Bill
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: getting snubbed, it's just the only our explanation is some
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: sort of Patriots bias or some sort of weird holding
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: on to things that like Spygate and things like that
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: that are just you need to just get over it, okay,
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: like it didn't by any means. The guy's got eight
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: super Bowl rings between being a coordinator in a head he's.
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: Coached in twenty percent of them, right, so just get
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: over yourself. The little line that everybody uses, and I
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: think this is valid to a point of you know,
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: what's the measure of Hall of Famer? Well, can you
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: tell the story of the sport without this person? There
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: may be no one single individual because football doesn't really
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: have an ABN or double day, like it was kind
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: of founded by different people and came together. You know
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: what I'm saying, is there a single I'm asking this seriously,
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: I don't know. Maybe I'm forgetting somebody. He's Bill's definitely
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: top five is there a single individual who you cannot
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: tell the story of the NFL without more than Bill Belichick?
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: How do you tell the story of this sport without
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: Bill Belichick's It simply cannot be done. And by the way,
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: also the guy they could probably tell it than anybody. Yeah,
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: and it's it's a shame the Hall of Fame as
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: it sits today. I hate saying it because of the
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: guys that are in and that have that honor and
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: that will get that honor. It's illegitimate, plain and simple.
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: It's illegitimate. And even I'm sure Bill will get in
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: next year, and you know, great, he won't have been
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: a first ballot Hall of Famer and that I don't
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: want him to get in next year. And everybody say, oh,
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: the committee finally got it right. No, no, because being
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: a first being a first ballot Hall of Famer means
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: something beyond just getting in. That's the apex of the apex,
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: and it will, at least until they overhaul the voting
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: and change the format. It should remain a stain. It
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: should remain a black mark as long as the current
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: format holds.
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: Okay, last thing on this, and then we got to
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: move on the on Sunday night after.
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: The game or more the Invanitary doesn't get in this year.
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: That's where. So we were hanging out after the game
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: on Sunday night and I got to meet Adam Vanentary,
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: which I will fully admit I nerd it out. I was.
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: I was the biggest fullo about not going to Denver.
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: It wasn't the game. It was Adam being in the
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: building with Adavanentari when they're trying to kick field goals
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: in the snow, Like, come on, I.
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: Fan boyd hard. I introduced myself, you know, YadA, YadA, YadA.
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: And I after I saw this build news, I was like,
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: don't you do it. Don't you freaking leave Adam Vanentary
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: out again, because if you leave Adam Vanentary out again, uh,
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: then Patriotizations is gonna You're gonna have some splannet to do. Well,
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: Like you just don't do it. Just don't you if
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: you already you know, all these votes are already cast
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: and all that stuff, so it's too late whether he's
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: in or out. But just don't do it. I'm telling
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: you now, because uh, this Belichick thing is already ridiculous
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: and embarrassing. Uh, that will just add fuel to it.
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: And I'd also add that, you know, mister Craft of course,
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: is up for nomination to be inducted as well. Uh
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: so you better tread lightly Hall of Fame, like you
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: better be careful here, because if you're leaving all these
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: guys out, it's not gonna look good for you. It's
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: not gonna look let's.
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: Do you know how we all and we were just
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: joking about how it's going to be quicker with the
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: draft this year. We're gonna not have as much time
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: to fill in the off seas we always do the offseason.
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: I'm here, I said this last night as a joke,
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: and like, I'm seriously considering it. We should have a
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: catch twenty two Pro Football Hall of Fame. And like
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: each week on the show in the offseason he killed
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: ten minutes, we each present a player or a coach
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: or somebody that we thinks deserving of being in it,
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: let's build our own. It would have just as much
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: legitimacy as the one that can't know Io as far
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: as I'm concerned.
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: All right, let's take some of these calls and emails
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: and let's talk a little bit of Seattle. I think
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: we got enough off for a chest on.
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: On that I will I will continue talking.
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: Patty is an Akawa. What's up, Patty?
- 1:19:45Speaker 6: Hey, good morning. Jents. Got a few things to go over,
- 1:19:48Speaker 6: so I'll try and make it quick. Regarding the Hall
- 1:19:50Speaker 6: of Fame, I said this yesterday. When I read it,
- 1:19:54Speaker 6: it's clear to me now it's a popularity contrast contest.
- 1:19:57Speaker 6: It's no longer. It's not a meritocracy, which it should be.
- 1:20:02Speaker 6: That's all I have to say about that. Regarding the game,
- 1:20:06Speaker 6: I got five things, guys. Yes we do these five
- 1:20:10Speaker 6: things we win, and all lined with a question too,
- 1:20:13Speaker 6: and I'll, like I said, I'll make it quick. Number
- 1:20:14Speaker 6: one is you gotta win the line of scrimmage. In
- 1:20:16Speaker 6: my forty year history of watching the Super Bowls, I
- 1:20:20Speaker 6: cannot give you any team that lost the line of
- 1:20:22Speaker 6: scrimmage on both sides that ended up winning the game.
- 1:20:25Speaker 6: This is especially important on defense. After what we did
- 1:20:27Speaker 6: to the Broncos offensive line, I have a little bit
- 1:20:30Speaker 6: more confidence. Number two, you gotta stop Kenneth Walker. Number three,
- 1:20:36Speaker 6: we have to come out of this game saying that
- 1:20:39Speaker 6: the passing game was clinical. Our passing game. Number four,
- 1:20:45Speaker 6: don't kick the Shaheed punt or kickoff seems pretty simple.
- 1:20:49Speaker 6: Just kick it out of the end zone, Alex, like
- 1:20:50Speaker 6: you are what one of you guys. I remember saying
- 1:20:52Speaker 6: that last week regarding mins. Just kick the ball right
- 1:20:55Speaker 6: out of the end zone. Don't even give them a
- 1:20:57Speaker 6: chance to return the ball. I was twenty years old
- 1:21:00Speaker 6: for Super Bowl thirty one. I still have PTSD from
- 1:21:03Speaker 6: Desmond Howard. And I think the X factor in this game.
- 1:21:08Speaker 6: I thought last week we would have to uh it
- 1:21:10Speaker 6: would be it would have to be a big Remondery game.
- 1:21:13Speaker 6: I think with the speed of the Seattle defense, I
- 1:21:16Speaker 6: think Tradon Henderson could end up becoming the X factor
- 1:21:19Speaker 6: this game for both sides. And I wanted to get
- 1:21:22Speaker 6: your guys possible. If you don't want to do it,
- 1:21:25Speaker 6: that's fine to wait till next week. Who are your
- 1:21:27Speaker 6: dark horse MVP candidates? Mine on offense would be Matt
- 1:21:32Speaker 6: Collins and on defense would be Christian Ellis.
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: That's all I got, Thanks, Patty.
- 1:21:37Speaker 6: I don't know if I'm going to be able to
- 1:21:38Speaker 6: call in next week because you guys are doing it
- 1:21:41Speaker 6: so late, but if I can't, I will love you guys.
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: Thanks Patty, Thanks for the call. Appreciate it so to
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: a few of those points, I would just say the
- 1:21:51Speaker 2: Henderson thing. I you know, I think a lot of us,
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: and some of us have taken some flak for just
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: pointing out and being objective about it. You know, he
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: has not the film has not been great for him
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: at times. This year. He's had some really big runs
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: and he's had some really big games where he's broken
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: you know, a couple of you know, home runs, and
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: that's that kind of helps. And you know, I think
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: he's still got a bright future. But in the playoffs,
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: you know, the details are important. You know, reading out
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: runs correctly, you know, knowing where the open lanes are,
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: you know how when to cut back, when not to
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: cut back. You know, also understanding blitz, pick up and
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: pass protection and pass game rules like all this kind
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: of stuff gets exposed to the tenth degree in the
- 1:22:37Speaker 2: playoffs by good teams and good defenses. This Seattle defense,
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: the way that they blitz, in the way that they
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: play games up front, this is not the type of
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: game that you put a rookie who has you know,
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: is still kind of learning the mental side of the
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: game in for a lot of snaps. It's just not
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: that kind of game now. But that being said, I
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: do feel as though him returning kickoffs again should be
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: in play. It's the Super Bowl. If he knock on what,
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: he doesn't. But if he gets hurt, he gets hurt,
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: well empty the bag, yes, right, So I was a
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: little surprised, and they didn't do that last week, especially
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: with the way the game was unfolding. They didn't have
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: very many kickoffs to guard.
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: They didn't have so they needed somebody.
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: Right, So I was a little surprised. He didn't see
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: that last week, yep, but they own Trey Von Henderson
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: played four total snaps in this game. Yeah, I just don't.
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: I don't think it's going to be a big volume
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: game for him.
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: I don't, but like his quick strike ability is needed.
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: They need to find away once or twice a game. Similarly,
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: how honestly, the Seahawks use Shaheed like sah Heat's not
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: a volume guy by any means, but he's on kickoff,
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: he's on punt return, and then once a game they
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: give him a fly sweep or a vertical route or
- 1:23:58Speaker 2: something like that and they try to get him loose
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: and he's got that game breaking speed. I feel the
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: same way about Henderson, but the turnaround hand, the ball
- 1:24:06Speaker 2: off traditional sense of running back. I just don't know,
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: if you know, I don't think he's the answer. Now.
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: The other thing that he said about stopping Kenneth Walker,
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: I think is one of my early keys to the
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: game as well as good as Sam Darnold has been
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: in this little career renaissance that he's had the last
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: couple of years, when you really look, you know, deeper
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: into it, the play action stuff is really driving his
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: efficiency through the roof. Like he is a very good
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: passer off play action. He's mobile enough to run their
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: bootleg concepts off their stretch runs, and his you know
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: EPA on non play action you know, traditional dropbacks is
- 1:24:48Speaker 2: like league average is EPA on play action dropbacks is
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: top five in the league. Yeah, so what does that mean.
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: It means that you need to find a way to
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: win first down, right, The run game needs to be
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: put to bed. You need to get him into second
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: and third and long, and you need to present opportunities
- 1:25:06Speaker 2: for him to have to drop that pass a lot,
- 1:25:08Speaker 2: like you've done with all these quarterbacks all playoffs long.
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: So if you can stop the run, if you can
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: get them out of run, play action sequencing on early
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: downs and you can get them into third and long
- 1:25:19Speaker 2: like that's where you can get Donald to make some mistakes.
- 1:25:23Speaker 2: They've turned the ball over, not in the playoffs, but
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: they turned the ball over a lot in the regular season.
- 1:25:27Speaker 2: He still has games where he looks like the jet
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: Sam Darnold at times, and that is because basically, in
- 1:25:35Speaker 2: my opinion, when the game has on his shoulders and
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: it gets heavy, that that's when he can start to
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: kind of have those seeing ghost moments again. So that's
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: where the game is gonna be one and lost. In
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: the trenches like always. Like in this Patriots defensive line,
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: dominate first down, get them into second and third and long,
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: and put Donald into drop back passing situations. If he
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: beats you drop him back like he did against the Right,
- 1:26:01Speaker 2: you tip your cap and I ortually that's how it goes.
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: It's a super Bowl, You're playing a good team, right,
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: It's not going to be as simple as you know,
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: make them play. There's a lot of things they do well,
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: but like you said, you put the ball in Sam
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: Darnold's hands. Was one of the most turnover prone quarterbacks
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: in the NFL this year. You force him to have
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: to be Superman and win the game. And like you said,
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: if he does, he tip your cap. But that feels
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: like the best way to attack this thing.
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: Yeah, so that was my big thing, I think on
- 1:26:25Speaker 2: the on the offensive side of the ball. Just looking
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: at a few of my notes here in terms of
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: initial thoughts on the Seahawks, you know, they during the
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: regular season, this was the one of the lowest pass
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: right teams in the league in terms of pure pass right.
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: They were lowest in the NFL fifty one point three
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: percent in terms of neutral pass which you know, just
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: looking at you know, not blowout running right because that
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: obviously will skew it because they were in some blowouts.
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: As a good team, they were twenty ninth in the
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: league in neutral pass. So like they don't throw the
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: ball with the high volume, they drive up efficiency with
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: play action and they are, you know, a team that
- 1:27:02Speaker 2: stays out a third and long with that toward sort
- 1:27:05Speaker 2: of approach. So Clint Kubiak, their offensive coordinator, is the
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: son of Gary Kubiak, who you probably know from the Broncos. Uh.
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: It is a Shanahan Tree offense, that is it. You know,
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: Kubiak's ties er to Shanahan. Mike Shanahan mostly with the
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: Denver Broncos. This is another one of those Shanahan West
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: Coast outside zone bootleg play action. Uh, you know West
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: Coast drop back concepts on third down. You know that
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: that's the way that they play offensively. Now, it doesn't
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: it's not Mike McDaniel, Kyle Shannon and Sean McVay level
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: of motion. They don't use quite as much motion as
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: those teams do, but they will use it.
- 1:27:44Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: Some of the things that I think stand out to
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: just some of the nitty gritty. Uh. They are a big,
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: heavy personnel team. They play a lot of two tights.
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: They have Robbie Oots our guy to play full backs.
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: They don't play a ton of three wide receiver So
- 1:28:00Speaker 2: a lot of the time it's JSN Cooper Cup and
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: big boys, you know, big bodies like that. That's sort
- 1:28:07Speaker 2: of their offense that that's been a bulk of it
- 1:28:10Speaker 2: at least, So that's sort of what they do offensively. Defensively,
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: Mike McDonald's one of the best. He's one of the
- 1:28:18Speaker 2: best in the game. He has been really going back
- 1:28:20Speaker 2: to his days in Baltimore. I think what makes his
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: scheme tick is. They are very very good when they
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: do pressure, but they don't pressure at a high volume,
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: So he's very good at picking his spots as to
- 1:28:33Speaker 2: when to cook up pressure. Most of the time it's
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: obviously on third down, third, medium, third and long. But
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: when they blitz, they have the number one EPA per
- 1:28:42Speaker 2: drop back in the league when they blitz by a
- 1:28:44Speaker 2: wide margin. So it's not a high volume blitz team,
- 1:28:48Speaker 2: but it's a very impactful blitz team. They're very good
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: at it. They're yeah, they're very good up front in
- 1:28:55Speaker 2: terms of you know, games and stunts, and their blitz
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: schemes are core needed. So they're gonna blitz and they're
- 1:29:02Speaker 2: also gonna twist at the same time. Right, So it's
- 1:29:04Speaker 2: not gonna just be we're gonna send five guys straight
- 1:29:07Speaker 2: at you. It's gonna they're gonna spin the dial.
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: With the uh Dennis Robin clip from the Last Dances.
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: Guy's coming here, and then this guy comes here, and
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: this guy goes over there, and guys there, and.
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: Yep, uh that's a big part of it. Uh. Their secondary,
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: their their coverage is pretty structured and basic. They only
- 1:29:25Speaker 2: run like three real standard coverages. You know, there are one, two,
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: and three team. They're Cover three and Cover two are
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: their most prevalent, prevalent excuse me, coverages in terms of
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: zone defense. And then they play some man, and they
- 1:29:38Speaker 2: played more man in the playoffs, and they played man
- 1:29:40Speaker 2: in the regular season, so we might see more man
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: in the super Bowl and typical, uh, what you would expect.
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: So when I watch their tape, though, what stands out
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: to me is just how terrific McDonald is at scheming
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: pressure and how he not only does he threaten pressure
- 1:29:57Speaker 2: rules in terms of understanding past perti and how to
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: expose the way that teams pass protect, he's also extremely
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: good at you know, they run a lot of their
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: stunts are like more like pick plays than like pure stunts.
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: So it's like almost like a pick and roll in basketball,
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: where like one guy literally car crashes into an offensive
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: lineman to get the other guy free, and oftentimes what
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: happens is is the guy that's setting the pick is
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: the one that ends up coming free because you'll loop,
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: like you'll switch it as an offensive line. But then
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: the guy that was supposed to pick up the looper
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: is like, you know, falling down because he just got
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: ear hold by the guy next to him, right, So
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: there's a lot of moving parts up front. It's very sound.
- 1:30:41Speaker 2: It's a great defense. It's a it's a really great defense.
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: And you know this tree, whether it's Jesse Minter who's
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: now the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, it's McDonald
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: like they this is now like kind of like I
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: would say, along with Vic Fangio, these are the schemes
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: in the NFL, Like everybody is watching what Seattle is
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: cooking up defensively and trying to copy Seattle, like that's
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: this is what yeah. And I would say the last
- 1:31:13Speaker 2: thing with Seattle's defense, they have waves and waves of
- 1:31:17Speaker 2: depth that pass rusher. Like this is not a team
- 1:31:19Speaker 2: that necessarily has like a Will Anderson or a Nick Benino.
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: You say Nascar defense. They have no Patriots. Fans aren't
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: gonna love to hear that.
- 1:31:26Speaker 2: They have like seven or eight guys that can rush
- 1:31:28Speaker 2: the passer and they cycle through all of them and
- 1:31:30Speaker 2: they keep them all fresh. You know, Dexter Lawrence and
- 1:31:33Speaker 2: Leonard Williams and Byron Murphy Nuosu like those are the
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: big names. That's like kind of their core four. But
- 1:31:41Speaker 2: they like, you know, we talked a little bit at
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: one point about Bowie Mafi like being on the trade block,
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: Like that guy should start for like thirty teams and
- 1:31:48Speaker 2: he doesn't even start in Seattle. You know, like they
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: have depth. They're all good. But I'd say the biggest
- 1:31:55Speaker 2: thing that gives me a little bit of hope about
- 1:31:58Speaker 2: the way that they rush the pass is that they
- 1:32:02Speaker 2: don't have a like I want to like be careful
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: how I say, they don't win one on one as
- 1:32:09Speaker 2: much as some of the other defense.
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: Very much like winning on scheme organized scheming receivers over.
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: Yes, it's not as much like Will Anderson's just an
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: alien and we can't block him, right, It's much more
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: of the scheme stuff that gives offensive lines problems. So
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: when they do rush for standard four man rush, they
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: do picking game a lot. But if they just have
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: kind of like a straight action standard four man rush,
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: you do see some clean pockets on tape with that
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: kind of stuff, but they just don't do very often.
- 1:32:39Speaker 2: You know, they stunt twenty five percent of the time,
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: they blitz thirty percent of the time. So they're coming
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: after you. They they are gonna come after Drake May
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: in this game. But the one kind of thing that
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: I would say that maybe Drake may could do. And
- 1:32:51Speaker 2: we're gonna get into way more of this next week.
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: But if they're gonna stunt and they're gonna run all
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: these games up front, it can be undisciplined. You know,
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: they can get out of gaps, they can be you know,
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: pin their ears back. Yeah, So if he can get
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: out of the pocket, if he can find those openings,
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: you know, I would like to see him in this game,
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: maybe a little bit more now that the weather is
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: hopefully going to be better. Knock on wood and all
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: that stuff, but be a thrower for longer, uh in
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: those instances I think would really give Seattle uh some problems.
- 1:33:25Speaker 2: If he can play, you know, make plays out of
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: structure as a thrower, I think that they could land
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: some haymakers against this defense that way. Because they play
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: a lot of zone, You're gonna ask them to kind
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: of plaster down the field against those zone coverages. If
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: he gets out of the pocket, he's gonna have some
- 1:33:42Speaker 2: opportunities to either run or make plays with his arm
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: on the move. So that's when I look at their film,
- 1:33:49Speaker 2: you know, I think that there's a couple of games
- 1:33:51Speaker 2: that defensively I've watched, you know, the the Niners games
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: are just yikes, you know, like that's domination by Seattle defense.
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: The NFC Championship game against the Rams, Yeah, good luck,
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: like good luck emulating DeVante Adams and Pukinikua mossing people
- 1:34:09Speaker 2: down the field like that to me is like not
- 1:34:12Speaker 2: necessarily indicative. I know Stafford threw for a lot of
- 1:34:15Speaker 2: like deep air yards in that game. I think he
- 1:34:17Speaker 2: had like over two hundred yards on throws, you know,
- 1:34:20Speaker 2: more than twenty yards down the field. Like they kind
- 1:34:22Speaker 2: of got them with explosives in that game, but a
- 1:34:25Speaker 2: lot of it was either big time throws by Stafford
- 1:34:28Speaker 2: or Poka nikuah mossing people, right, And I don't know
- 1:34:32Speaker 2: if that's necessarily what you want to count on in
- 1:34:34Speaker 2: a game like this. The first the second matchup, I
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: guess I should say technically the Week sixteen regular season matchup.
- 1:34:43Speaker 2: If you watch that film, there's a lot more McVeigh
- 1:34:46Speaker 2: magic on that film, scheming guys open and guys are
- 1:34:50Speaker 2: just running wide open through zones and things like that.
- 1:34:52Speaker 2: So my guess is that the Patriots and Josh McDaniels
- 1:34:56Speaker 2: will watch a lot of that Week sixteen game where
- 1:34:59Speaker 2: they add some open receivers in that game that was
- 1:35:02Speaker 2: uncharacteristic of what Seattle usually looks like coverage wise. So
- 1:35:06Speaker 2: that's my little primer on the Seahawks. Like obviously, next
- 1:35:09Speaker 2: week's show in Santa Clara will be all Seahawks preview
- 1:35:12Speaker 2: and we'll get really into it. But I think we've
- 1:35:15Speaker 2: got you know, that's kind of the skinny of it.
- 1:35:18Speaker 2: You know, we mentioned Shaheit a couple of times. Special
- 1:35:21Speaker 2: Team's gonna be big in this game.
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: Huge.
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: You know, covering kicks is gonna be big in this game.
- 1:35:26Speaker 2: You know that he's a momentum flipper. You know, he's
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: a guy you know, against San Francisco, takes a kickoff
- 1:35:33Speaker 2: ninety five yards to the house and that kind of
- 1:35:35Speaker 2: got them rolling and it was blouses. You know, it
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: was a blowout. So they have to be careful with
- 1:35:40Speaker 2: those types of things with Shahid. All right, let's get
- 1:35:43Speaker 2: back to the calls. We got some callers and some
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: emails here that I'll read Brady is in Connecticut. What's up, Brady?
- 1:35:50Speaker 7: Hey, guys, I'm just tuning in here, so sorry if
- 1:35:53Speaker 7: this was covered in the first half, but I just
- 1:35:55Speaker 7: wanted to speak a little bit to our defensive performance
- 1:35:58Speaker 7: this playoff run. Obviously we got some guys healthy at
- 1:36:01Speaker 7: the right time, but you know, putting up you know,
- 1:36:04Speaker 7: four sacks averaging four sacks a game, a ton of turnovers,
- 1:36:08Speaker 7: not really allowing much with on the ground, you know,
- 1:36:11Speaker 7: really limiting the passing game. So I guess just my
- 1:36:15Speaker 7: first off is, uh, you know, when we're watching this,
- 1:36:18Speaker 7: how do we know whether to attribute it to you know,
- 1:36:21Speaker 7: a lot of people are talking about like bad opposing
- 1:36:23Speaker 7: QB play versus you know, Zach zach kor you know,
- 1:36:26Speaker 7: spinning the dial with his play calling. Obviously some great
- 1:36:29Speaker 7: execution by the players we've seen, you know, some some
- 1:36:32Speaker 7: great you know picks by Marcus Jones and Carlton Davis
- 1:36:36Speaker 7: and uh, you know, big plays on the defensive line
- 1:36:38Speaker 7: as well. So that's that's really my question I'm putting
- 1:36:41Speaker 7: out there. And then last day just wanted to shout
- 1:36:42Speaker 7: out the front office an incredible defensive rebuild. This offseason
- 1:36:46Speaker 7: feels like pretty much every person is hit, you know,
- 1:36:49Speaker 7: whether it's looking at free agency or with the you know,
- 1:36:51Speaker 7: with the deeper draft picks that we that we've taken
- 1:36:53Speaker 7: with the you know, Woodson playing out of his mind
- 1:36:55Speaker 7: right now. So I'll leave it there.
- 1:36:56Speaker 2: Thanks, thanks Brandy, thanks for the call. So I would
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: say that to the first thing, just you know, how
- 1:37:01Speaker 2: do you tell the difference? I would say in this game,
- 1:37:04Speaker 2: you know, you just look at the line of scrimmage, like,
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: that's a really good Broncos offensive line they went against.
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: It was fully healthy. They had their center back in
- 1:37:10Speaker 2: the game. That's no, that's no fluke.
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: No, that was the real deal.
- 1:37:14Speaker 2: Jared Stidham and did he or didn't he hit a
- 1:37:16Speaker 2: throw here? And like that. I can see why people
- 1:37:18Speaker 2: would say that's a little bit more in the you know,
- 1:37:22Speaker 2: the fluky category.
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: Or Elijah here's the thing, Elijah ponderbeats gart Poles one
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: on one, pont Gearpoles went on what the quarterback back
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: there doesn't really, That's what I'm saying. Change that. You know,
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: the overall numbers, yeah, probably, but there's enough you go
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: watch the individual matchups. Christian Barmore throwing Quinn Minors to
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: the side. Yeah, you know exactly.
- 1:37:45Speaker 2: Those are the things that I look at and say
- 1:37:46Speaker 2: that that's legit, that's real. You know, like you said,
- 1:37:50Speaker 2: you could probably do a deep dive into the numbers
- 1:37:53Speaker 2: of how good they played in this game and make
- 1:37:55Speaker 2: it look like it was like the best Championship game
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: performance ever. Right, But I would say that because of
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: the quarterback. But in terms of the offensive line versus
- 1:38:04Speaker 2: defensive line, you know that's Quinn Minors is an All
- 1:38:07Speaker 2: first team All Pro this year. Garrett, Yeah, Garrett Bowles
- 1:38:12Speaker 2: is an All team first team All Pro at left tackle,
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: the first team All Pro at left.
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: Tackle, left tackle, the best left tackle in the NFL.
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: Mcglinchy and Wantenberg got votes to actually think power did
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: all five of them get votes?
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: McGlinchey had a really solid year. And one of the
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: things that the Patriots did in this game that I
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: forgot to mention with Chase On is they actually had
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: Chase On rush over the right tackle a bunch in
- 1:38:35Speaker 2: this one to get him away from Garrett Bowles, which
- 1:38:39Speaker 2: was a nice change up. Usually he he rushes on
- 1:38:41Speaker 2: the on the blind side. Excuse me, but in this game,
- 1:38:44Speaker 2: most of.
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: You think just having the injury opened up the door
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: for that.
- 1:38:48Speaker 2: Yeah, but I think that they are now viewing Chase
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: On as a matchup piece, a chess piece that is
- 1:38:55Speaker 2: having the type of playoffs, he's hasing, So let's go
- 1:38:58Speaker 2: pick on the on the ourst matchup there. All right,
- 1:39:02Speaker 2: this is Reno in North Carolina. What's up, Reno?
- 1:39:06Speaker 8: Hey, guys, thanks for taking my call, No problem. I
- 1:39:09Speaker 8: wanted to touch on two things, and you hit on
- 1:39:11Speaker 8: it a bit. But Seattle can create explosive plays in
- 1:39:15Speaker 8: their special teams, and I just wanted to ask about,
- 1:39:18Speaker 8: with Henderson's snap count going down, why not considering putting
- 1:39:22Speaker 8: him back on kick return potentially trying to get an
- 1:39:25Speaker 8: explosive play, putting him back there with Kyle Williams and
- 1:39:28Speaker 8: trying to flip field positions. And my second thing is
- 1:39:31Speaker 8: it's a travesty that Rodney Harrison isn't in the Hall
- 1:39:34Speaker 8: of Fame.
- 1:39:34Speaker 9: And that's a similar indictment.
- 1:39:36Speaker 8: On the process and voters as with coach Belichick.
- 1:39:39Speaker 2: So thanks, yeah, agreed.
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: One, How is Rodney Harrison become the third biggest Hall
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: of Fame stuff for the payta? I was so ready
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: to be done with Harrison because he got in and
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: then was gonna be all attention on Matthew Slater. I
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: didn't think we'd go the other direction where his case
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: got like all respect to Rodney Harrison. I consider Vinitaria big,
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: bigger stup obviously, Bill, So yeah, all three should be in.
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: All three, Will Fork and Mankins. Those are probably the
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: guys that are eligible right now. I apologize if I'm
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: missing somebody, but those guys that are Eli Welker, those
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: are the guys that are eligible right now that I
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: would say, like, have a legit. There's a couple of
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: other guys that are. You know, Corey Dillon's kind of borderline.
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: But if you look, like again, I know what I saw.
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: Corey Dyllan was Hall of Fame caliber running back. But
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: oddly enough, also Patriots Fred Taylor, Stephen Jackson not in,
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: have been eligible, very similar careers. So like, okay, if
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: you're gonna be consistent and tell me that guy's not in,
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: I don't agree, but like, okay, that players not in.
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: They're very stingy with running backs. Fine, you look at
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: the other coaches that are in and that got in
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: first ballot. Bill Belichick's not in. You look at the
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: other safeties or defensive players that are in where Harrison's
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: not in. Like, that's where you Vinitaria great. There's no
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: comp for vinitary because there's nobody better that's where you
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: lose me.
- 1:40:56Speaker 2: So on especially. Yeah, we're all in agreement that maybe
- 1:41:00Speaker 2: giving Trevon Henderson some opportunities to return kickoffs.
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: Should be Also, I've been saying to all playoffs, and
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: I'm waiting for us to pay off. There's only one
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: more chance. It feels like so many of these Patriots
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: super Bowl runs have a big plan upunt return. Yeah,
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: and I'm just I'm waiting for Marcus Jones to have
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: that moment on one of them. I thought he did,
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: and he cut.
- 1:41:18Speaker 2: I don't know why he cut outside.
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: I wonder if there was like a footing issue or
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: something that he cut the way he did. But like
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: I feel it, it's getting close. So I'm gonna say
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: it again, Marcus Jones.
- 1:41:27Speaker 2: I thought that on I don't know why he didn't
- 1:41:30Speaker 2: just go immediately up feed. I yeah, it was. It
- 1:41:32Speaker 2: was a weird read for him, Like that was really weird.
- 1:41:35Speaker 2: Like he's normally dynamic.
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: I wondered, because that's when the footing was starting to
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: kind of get shaky.
- 1:41:39Speaker 2: But like what would the footing is, Like what difference
- 1:41:42Speaker 2: would be He's he's.
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: Just overthinking it, maybe because he's he's trying to plan
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: I think like a cut or two ahead, right.
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: Yeah, right, maybe, but yeah, that that one, uh yeah,
- 1:41:52Speaker 2: definitely was something that stood out. Eric in Connecticut. What's up, Eric, eric.
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: Hey, long time listener.
- 1:42:02Speaker 9: I just wanted to say thank you for everything you've
- 1:42:04Speaker 9: done this year.
- 1:42:05Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:42:07Speaker 9: I don't really have a question. I just wanted to
- 1:42:08Speaker 9: bring something full circle that you brought up earlier in
- 1:42:11Speaker 9: the show. You said that you were at the Senior
- 1:42:14Speaker 9: Bowl last year. I remember the show that you guys
- 1:42:16Speaker 9: were at the Senior Bowl and you brought up how
- 1:42:19Speaker 9: you looked at the teams that were in the Super
- 1:42:21Speaker 9: Bowl and they were like, we don't even they're just
- 1:42:24Speaker 9: they're just chilling. They're they're here for like a complimentary
- 1:42:27Speaker 9: guard or like a maybe an edge rusher to add
- 1:42:31Speaker 9: to like the rotation. I remember you guys chopping it
- 1:42:33Speaker 9: up back last year about that, and it just feels
- 1:42:36Speaker 9: nice that we're the team now. Now that now we're
- 1:42:38Speaker 9: that team. Yeah thing, we don't need holes plugged, but
- 1:42:41Speaker 9: it's a nice bull circle moment. I agree with you.
- 1:42:45Speaker 9: The Senior Bowl just snuck up on me like this.
- 1:42:47Speaker 9: I didn't even realize that the Senior Bowl was this week.
- 1:42:49Speaker 9: That's helped into the Patriots. I've been in this year. Again,
- 1:42:53Speaker 9: don't really have a question. I just wanted to thank
- 1:42:55Speaker 9: you guys for everything, and I hope you have a
- 1:42:56Speaker 9: good time with the Super Bowl.
- 1:42:57Speaker 2: Thanks, Eric, appreciate that. Yeah. So the Patriots do have
- 1:43:01Speaker 2: their contingents down at the Senior Bowl right now on Mobile.
- 1:43:04Speaker 2: So all the scouts you know, are already focused.
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: On their said the other day they went from the
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: Shrine Bowl to the Senior Bowl.
- 1:43:10Speaker 2: Yeah, well that's what they normally do. Elliot Wolf and
- 1:43:12Speaker 2: Ryan Katten went from Denver to Mobile.
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:43:15Speaker 2: So they Patriots have people and surely have people that
- 1:43:20Speaker 2: are already full steam ahead on the draft in the
- 1:43:23Speaker 2: off season. And don't worry like it's not like the
- 1:43:26Speaker 2: coaching staff isn't there yet, but the scouting department is
- 1:43:29Speaker 2: absolutely there. Seven more minutes. Let's let's talk a little
- 1:43:33Speaker 2: bit about some of the news around the league. There's
- 1:43:35Speaker 2: some interesting AFC East news that we can end the
- 1:43:38Speaker 2: show with, the biggest one being that the Bills have
- 1:43:42Speaker 2: promoted Joe Brady from offensive coordinator to head coach. I
- 1:43:46Speaker 2: was shocked by this one. I really was. Yes, I
- 1:43:50Speaker 2: thought it.
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: Doesn't mean I think it's a good decision enough, but
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: you were honestly surprised.
- 1:43:53Speaker 2: I was surprised it did I was surprised it didn't
- 1:43:55Speaker 2: hire Brian Dable. I think the Brian Dables offensive minded,
- 1:44:01Speaker 2: just like Joe Brady has head coaching experience. Granted, got fired,
- 1:44:06Speaker 2: but a lot of people got fired from their first job.
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: And that was I think more of the GM than him.
- 1:44:10Speaker 2: All the gms right there, Mike Rabel got fired from
- 1:44:12Speaker 2: his first job, and here we are, so Bill Belichick
- 1:44:14Speaker 2: got fired from his first So you know, my point being,
- 1:44:19Speaker 2: I just thought that the experience for Dable as a
- 1:44:22Speaker 2: head coach was gonna trump Joe Brady's institutional standing, you know,
- 1:44:27Speaker 2: whatever you want to call it. I also just saw
- 1:44:30Speaker 2: it come across that Bobby Babbage, their defensive coordinator, has left.
- 1:44:35Speaker 2: He's going elsewhere, to Green Bay. So that really surprises
- 1:44:39Speaker 2: me as well, because I actually I know that they
- 1:44:42Speaker 2: their defense kind of took some heat for the loss
- 1:44:44Speaker 2: against the Broncos in the playoffs, but it's been a
- 1:44:46Speaker 2: really good defense. It's a good system. Yeah, but Babbage
- 1:44:50Speaker 2: has taken over play calling and has done a nice job.
- 1:44:54Speaker 2: I thought that if I was Joe Brady. I would
- 1:44:57Speaker 2: have tried to work really hard, kind of like Drawd
- 1:44:59Speaker 2: Mayo trying to keep Steve Belichick right, like, you know,
- 1:45:02Speaker 2: to keep some continuity there. I I don't know how
- 1:45:08Speaker 2: this is gonna work out. I like Joe Brady as
- 1:45:10Speaker 2: an offensive mine, you know, like every offensive coordinator. He
- 1:45:13Speaker 2: has some nitpicks, and he has some things that are flawed,
- 1:45:15Speaker 2: but their run game has been really good with him.
- 1:45:18Speaker 2: I think that they do some things schematically that are
- 1:45:21Speaker 2: are cool and challenging to defend. I have no idea
- 1:45:24Speaker 2: what kind of head coach he's going to be. This
- 1:45:26Speaker 2: to me, screams Josh Allen. Continuity. They wanted to keep
- 1:45:30Speaker 2: it the same for Alan Get a little bit younger,
- 1:45:33Speaker 2: more innovative, you know, tight pants kind of guy as
- 1:45:36Speaker 2: the head coach, and they had one in house, and
- 1:45:38Speaker 2: so instead of going out and hiring another one from outside,
- 1:45:42Speaker 2: they just promoted their guy. But last thing, and then
- 1:45:45Speaker 2: you can give your take. Yeah, the history, especially the
- 1:45:49Speaker 2: recent history of firing your head coach and then promoting
- 1:45:52Speaker 2: a coordinator, the recent history is not good, not good.
- 1:45:56Speaker 2: It's not good. So I'm interested to see how this
- 1:45:59Speaker 2: works out.
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: Very interesting.
- 1:46:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm sure you are.
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: There was I don't know because I'm not room, but
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: there was a report at the time where like the
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: Bills fired McDermott without they they have a plan. Yeah,
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: they fired McDermott to fire McDermott, Okay, like we're gonna
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: figure it out from here, which should never fire coach
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: that way you should have at least and whether or
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: not the plan works out, you should have some sort
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: of idea. This feels to me like the safe space
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: between keeping Sean McDermott and hiring Brian Daball, which we're
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: probably like part of me wonders whether it was internal
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: or external, But the blowback to firing McDermott, which clearly
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: was a sudden move, freaked them out and they said, okay, well,
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: how do we appease some of those and all right,
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: we're gonna keep the guy that's been here because okay,
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: you like McDermott, here's the guy that was here. That
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: doesn't mean he's the same as we saw it with
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: John Mayl.
- 1:46:51Speaker 2: It just is so sorry to cut you off, but
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: it's just so shocking to me that the fall from
- 1:46:58Speaker 2: grace of that because of how they handled the McDermott situation.
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: To you, this a couple of weeks ago is not
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: going to be an attractive job.
- 1:47:07Speaker 2: But that the fact that it's not an attractive job
- 1:47:10Speaker 2: is all of their own doing. Yes, because it should
- 1:47:13Speaker 2: be one of the most attractive jobs to get to
- 1:47:16Speaker 2: coach the reigning MVP, who's, whether you want to admit
- 1:47:21Speaker 2: it or not, is at least a top five quarterback
- 1:47:23Speaker 2: in the NFL. And to have that opportunity to coach
- 1:47:27Speaker 2: Josh Allen in his prime, similar to have the opportunity
- 1:47:30Speaker 2: to coach Lamar Jackson in his prime in Baltimore, like
- 1:47:32Speaker 2: that should be a hugely uh you know, big job opening.
- 1:47:37Speaker 2: And look at like the Chargers landed Jim Harbough Justin
- 1:47:41Speaker 2: Herbert like, and Justin Herbert hasn't accomplished as much as as.
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: Josh Allen ha accomplished about the same.
- 1:47:46Speaker 2: No, it hasn't. He doesn't want an MVP. But this
- 1:47:52Speaker 2: is what I was trying to tell you, Like for
- 1:47:54Speaker 2: all that, but this is about This is about ownership,
- 1:47:57Speaker 2: This is about decision making. This is about Brandon Beans.
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: Still be Brandon Bean's not there. Do you think they
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: have a better yeah, like a coach? Yeah, yeah, Look
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: I thought they should have moved on from both. I
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: thought that the clock had destruck midnight on that on
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: that org, and it was like restart before Josh Allen
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: gets too old or ass out. I want to get
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: into that in a second, but only firing one and
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: the wrong one if I had to keep one. But
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: it's tough to keep the coach, not the GM, because
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: the GM wants his coach. But like, look at what
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: that roster is. You can't keep being and then the
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: press conference and throwing coaches under the bus and things
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: like that, like it's it's not surprised they became a
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: big job.
- 1:48:36Speaker 2: They made it an unattractive job, so it was an
- 1:48:38Speaker 2: attractive job.
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: Well, and they made it. I don't think any team,
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: I don't think any coaching jobs unattractive for reasons other
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: than organizational stability.
- 1:48:50Speaker 2: Well, I mean the jobs not I guess it's a
- 1:48:54Speaker 2: chicken or the egg thing. Yeah, like if the rosters
- 1:48:57Speaker 2: in shambles then most of the time, but like I
- 1:49:00Speaker 2: didn't think, you know, like like here, like like this
- 1:49:03Speaker 2: is not an unstable or anything like close to that.
- 1:49:06Speaker 2: And the roster, if you look at the twenty twenty
- 1:49:08Speaker 2: four roster, you probably would have thought the roster was.
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: Bad, your boy stable organization. They got the top coach
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: on the market. Yeah, even when there wasn't much there
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: for the roster. Now this becomes a thing and you're
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: gonna roll your eyes And a lot of people have
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: rolled their eyes at me for this take, but this
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: this is real. Yeah, sure you have Josh Allen. Buffalo's
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: now in a second coach, Lamar Jackson, and Baltimore is
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: now in a second coach Zach Taylor somehow still holding on.
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: But I don't know how long is Zach gona lost?
- 1:49:35Speaker 1: And we know Joe Burrow on our sub level of
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: dissatisfaction with that organization. Yeah, all three of those guys
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: have to be looking at Matthew Stafford and saying.
- 1:49:46Speaker 2: You were already going there. Yeah not this year.
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: I'm not saying they're gonna do it this year, but
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: the Lions, historically dysfunctional, historically have not been winners. He
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: had to get out of there to win.
- 1:49:59Speaker 2: At what point?
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: Point to Alan burrowin Mahomes and maybe maybe the coaching
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: hire's work.
- 1:50:05Speaker 2: I think I think Lamar is a lot closer to that,
- 1:50:08Speaker 2: So it.
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: Can be I can be Dan Marino stay here not win.
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: I can be John Elways hope I win down the road,
- 1:50:13Speaker 1: or do I be Matthew Stafford and go somewhere that's
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: gonna give me a chance to win? Right now? And
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: all three of those organizations you mentioned, the higher maybe
- 1:50:19Speaker 1: being about appeasing Josh Allen, all three of those organizations
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: have to be cognizant of their quarterbacks. Used to not leave.
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: Brady left Rogers left the doors open to these guys.
- 1:50:30Speaker 1: Now you cannot let that door open for those guys.
- 1:50:32Speaker 2: All right, we gotta wrap it up. Patriot's Unfiltered. It'll
- 1:50:35Speaker 2: be on in ten minutes and we'll talk more about
- 1:50:38Speaker 2: all of this. I'm sure we'll talk some Belichick as well.
- 1:50:42Speaker 2: I just want to give you another reminder before we
