- 1:23Speaker 1: vic Brandon.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Happy New Year, Happy New Year.
- 1:27Speaker 3: How you feeling? Do you have any Do you have
- 1:28Speaker 3: any New Year's resolutions?
- 1:30Speaker 2: Oh no, just hoping the Titans make it through the playoffs.
- 1:34Speaker 3: That's right, The Titans are in the playoffs as the
- 1:39Speaker 3: number one seed in the AFC.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Correct.
- 1:41Speaker 3: They've got a bye week coming up, and then they
- 1:44Speaker 3: will be hosting Wow whoever wins between Saturday's contest between
- 1:49Speaker 3: the Cleveland Browns and the New York Jets.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Yeah, and really rooting for Tom Cruise's Oscar nomination for
- 1:58Speaker 2: Mission Impossible the Final Well.
- 2:00Speaker 3: You know they're giving it to it's like the Career
- 2:04Speaker 3: Achievement nomination.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Yep, yep. But you know people thought that about Demmy Moore.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Yeah that's true, that's true, and then she didn't win.
- 2:13Speaker 3: But yeah, it's the the Oscar obviously going to uh
- 2:18Speaker 3: Dwayne Johnson for the Smashing Machine. Yes, yes, man, I
- 2:22Speaker 3: love he's getting this Awards season.
- 2:24Speaker 2: A comeback, the comeback Kid, even though I think he's
- 2:27Speaker 2: been making for fifty million dollars per movie for I
- 2:31Speaker 2: don't know how.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Long, but fifty million dollars to make the same.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Which a lot. Yeah, yeah, I was gonna say a
- 2:35Speaker 2: lot of that is wasted money. But Amazon, I think
- 2:39Speaker 2: did it. So yeah, well Amazon and Netflix, who knew
- 2:43Speaker 2: that's right? But yeah, So a lot of crazy things
- 2:45Speaker 2: going on in twenty twenty six. But the world's doing better.
- 2:49Speaker 2: People seem to like each other more. Everyone's happy, everyone's happy,
- 2:53Speaker 2: when's feeling good. Gas is at a dollar eighty seven.
- 2:57Speaker 2: I mean what.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Yeah, unreal? Yeah, well, we we wanted to do something
- 3:05Speaker 3: for for this January that felt a little a little cold.
- 3:09Speaker 3: I don't know that we've we've done that before. We
- 3:11Speaker 3: talked about Gosford Park, Moonrise Kingdom for January episode, so
- 3:18Speaker 3: kind of shifting gears here. This is. This is a
- 3:21Speaker 3: movie that feels quite cold. Obviously it's set on the moon.
- 3:26Speaker 3: It is. It is pretty lonely feeling and uh kind
- 3:30Speaker 3: of I don't know like it. It plays well this
- 3:33Speaker 3: time of year, it felt.
- 3:34Speaker 2: But if you can't kick your year off with some
- 3:37Speaker 2: Sam Rockwell, yeah, what do you even? Don't even listen?
- 3:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm I'm with you man. This we did a
- 3:45Speaker 3: Sam Rockwell trash We did a Sam Rockwell podcast not
- 3:51Speaker 3: too long ago. I don't remember what it was for.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Did we do it for that? Oh gosh, see how
- 3:58Speaker 3: they run whatever? Yeah?
- 4:00Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I think that's one of the last ones
- 4:02Speaker 2: that I saw him in. He was in The White
- 4:04Speaker 2: Lotus last year with a very memorable scene. Yeah, but yeah,
- 4:08Speaker 2: I probably it was two years ago.
- 4:14Speaker 3: I think so something like that.
- 4:15Speaker 2: And what's even more Weirds. I'm pretty sure it came
- 4:17Speaker 2: out on my birthday. I think that's why I remember.
- 4:19Speaker 3: But we talked about Sam Rockwell's career, and I had
- 4:23Speaker 3: not seen this movie at the time we did our
- 4:26Speaker 3: Mount Rushmore's. But I can I can safely say this
- 4:30Speaker 3: would be Sam Rockwell Mount Rushmore. Oh yeah, what I mean,
- 4:34Speaker 3: do you consider it his greatest performance? H Because I
- 4:40Speaker 3: don't know that I've seen every Sam rock Well you've seen.
- 4:43Speaker 3: You've seen quite a few.
- 4:45Speaker 2: I think it's up I think it's up there. Performance based,
- 4:49Speaker 2: I would say so. Especially yeah, I would say so
- 4:55Speaker 2: it's in the top two or top three. I think
- 4:57Speaker 2: the Three Billbirds were three billboards where he won in
- 5:00Speaker 2: the Oscar Oh yeah, I saw that. It is still
- 5:06Speaker 2: it's still I mean, he did win for Supporting Actor.
- 5:09Speaker 2: He is basically the only person in Moon.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:14Speaker 2: I think he's almost essentially the same only person you
- 5:17Speaker 2: really see.
- 5:19Speaker 3: There's a cat, There's a lot more.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a lot more to Moon and so yeah,
- 5:26Speaker 2: I think it could be if I go based off
- 5:29Speaker 2: performance of what like I enjoy Moon A lot more
- 5:32Speaker 2: than this other movie. But he is great in Clooney's
- 5:35Speaker 2: Confessions of a Dangerous Mind replaces Chuck Berry from the
- 5:38Speaker 2: host of The Gong Show, but also supposedly like this
- 5:42Speaker 2: like secret Agent. Yeah, but I I really after watching this,
- 5:48Speaker 2: he like he's just so damn good. He's acting off himself,
- 5:54Speaker 2: like it's it's it's really just him.
- 5:56Speaker 3: I mean you see, like the greats do that. You know,
- 5:59Speaker 3: it's like you try to pull off like multiple characters
- 6:03Speaker 3: in the same movie. It's Eddie. It's no easy task,
- 6:09Speaker 3: it's not. Yeah, but but Sam Rockwell pulls it off
- 6:11Speaker 3: in this one. For those that might need a refresher,
- 6:14Speaker 3: this synopsis comes Curtesy.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Do we say the name? Is it just because it's
- 6:19Speaker 2: in the title of our podcast?
- 6:21Speaker 3: No? I said it to an We can't be talking
- 6:23Speaker 3: about a fun little movie from two thousand and nine
- 6:25Speaker 3: called Moon Oh Okay. Astronaut Sam Bell's three year shift
- 6:30Speaker 3: at a lunar mine is finally coming to an end,
- 6:32Speaker 3: and he's looking forward to his reunion with his wife
- 6:35Speaker 3: and young daughter. Suddenly, Sam's health takes a drastic turn
- 6:39Speaker 3: for the worse. He suffers painful headaches and hallucinations, and
- 6:42Speaker 3: almost has a fatal accident. He meets what appears to
- 6:45Speaker 3: be a younger version of himself, possibly a clone. With
- 6:49Speaker 3: time running out, Sam must solve the mystery before the
- 6:52Speaker 3: company crew arrives.
- 6:55Speaker 2: I forgot how there was So there's the scene where
- 7:00Speaker 2: he talks to his daughter. Yeah, that's the one I remember,
- 7:06Speaker 2: but I forgot how we got there. Yeah, and I
- 7:10Speaker 2: definitely forgot the kind of the switcheroo that they do
- 7:15Speaker 2: where you think he's waking up from the crash, but
- 7:20Speaker 2: they're waking up the.
- 7:22Speaker 3: Like in general the other one yeah for life.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Yeah, and then he because the one that you thought
- 7:29Speaker 2: you had been watching, he actually wasn't, So I.
- 7:32Speaker 3: I forgot about that. Yeah.
- 7:34Speaker 2: It is very it's very smart. And and then they
- 7:38Speaker 2: kind of play off each other. There you know what
- 7:41Speaker 2: I saw like little similarities with that Mickey seventeen does.
- 7:47Speaker 3: I was going to say the same thing, like there
- 7:49Speaker 3: is kind.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Of like realize it until we watched Moon, but oh man,
- 7:53Speaker 2: there is. Uh.
- 7:54Speaker 3: For me, it was like the duality of man kind
- 7:57Speaker 3: of deal. It's like, yes, we saw it in Mickey
- 8:00Speaker 3: seventeen where it's like these are the same like from
- 8:03Speaker 3: a genetic biological standpoint, they're the same, but they're they're
- 8:08Speaker 3: very different in terms of their their personalities. Yeah, kind
- 8:12Speaker 3: of is reflective of the multitudes within us all and
- 8:16Speaker 3: how each clone kind of represents a different feeling, a
- 8:20Speaker 3: different emotion, or different.
- 8:21Speaker 2: People that they both have a one that's like this,
- 8:27Speaker 2: I'm getting answers like I'm not putting up with this, Yeah,
- 8:29Speaker 2: Like you know what I mean, Like there seems like
- 8:31Speaker 2: there's always the one that's like has to take charge,
- 8:34Speaker 2: and then it gets the other one going because the
- 8:37Speaker 2: one that we are introduced to at the beginning of
- 8:41Speaker 2: the film, as his health declines, he starts to push
- 8:46Speaker 2: it together. And it's very heartbreaking at the end, I mean,
- 8:49Speaker 2: because you care about these people, even though it's actually
- 8:54Speaker 2: like everybody was doing okay except for the people who
- 8:59Speaker 2: thought they were the one.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Yeah, which I think, you know, could be kind of
- 9:06Speaker 3: I kind of felt like it raises some really interesting
- 9:11Speaker 3: ethical questions about the advancement of science. Yeah, like you know,
- 9:15Speaker 3: do you consider like clones people kind of deal and
- 9:19Speaker 3: and they this company that sends them on this mission
- 9:24Speaker 3: obviously does not. And even you hear like the original
- 9:28Speaker 3: Sam on the phone when one of the Clones is
- 9:32Speaker 3: talking to his daughter. It's just like, oh, hang up
- 9:34Speaker 3: the phone, hang up the phone, like almost like no, no, no, no, no,
- 9:38Speaker 3: we don't we don't acknowledge that. It's to me, that
- 9:43Speaker 3: was one of the saddest aspects of the film. It's like,
- 9:46Speaker 3: you feel so bad for the two sam Bells that
- 9:49Speaker 3: are that are stuck I mean abandonment.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it really is. And the only thing
- 9:55Speaker 2: up there to console you is Kevin Spacey's voice. Yeah,
- 9:58Speaker 2: which is you know, that's a.
- 10:00Speaker 3: I recognize that voice right off the bat too, And
- 10:04Speaker 3: it was it was a little jarring. I was like, oh,
- 10:06Speaker 3: I guess he was still making movies then.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Two thousand and nine. Yeah, yeah, he was alright in
- 10:11Speaker 2: two thousand and nine. Well to movie audiences, he was
- 10:14Speaker 2: all right.
- 10:15Speaker 3: I think it's I think the film kind of the
- 10:20Speaker 3: way it explores the relationships between the Clones and uh,
- 10:26Speaker 3: it does kind of highlight their desires. I think it
- 10:30Speaker 3: is a testament to like the innate human nature, like
- 10:35Speaker 3: long community, to long for loving that sort of thing,
- 10:38Speaker 3: like it doesn't matter who you are, all humans, like
- 10:42Speaker 3: it's a base trait of ours. Yeah, that you you
- 10:46Speaker 3: long for that and.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Strike nobody's you're not absent from from any of that,
- 10:51Speaker 2: even if you even if they're classified as non human.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Yeah, and it just I don't know, man, I thought
- 10:59Speaker 3: it was a it was a powerful way to express that.
- 11:03Speaker 2: And it's such a small film, like there's nothing really
- 11:06Speaker 2: flashy about it, and maybe like when it goes outside
- 11:10Speaker 2: and on the moon, like you know, but honestly, they're
- 11:12Speaker 2: just really within like the confines of you know, what
- 11:16Speaker 2: would be a spaceship. But I mean, if you think
- 11:17Speaker 2: about it, they're not. There's nothing real tricky about it.
- 11:21Speaker 2: But I was watching on how they would film it,
- 11:24Speaker 2: like when they talk to each other and when they
- 11:26Speaker 2: fight each other. Yeah, a couple of times where it's
- 11:28Speaker 2: kind of like, oh that we could have we could
- 11:31Speaker 2: have covered that up a little bit.
- 11:32Speaker 3: I mean, hey, listen, but the.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Duncan Jones did damn good.
- 11:36Speaker 3: The budget was five million bars for this film, and
- 11:41Speaker 3: not only that, which you're right, you do kind of
- 11:44Speaker 3: notice some of those things in the film.
- 11:46Speaker 2: It's not I mean, listen, I've seen worse in a
- 11:48Speaker 2: in two hundred million dollar movies. But I but I
- 11:52Speaker 2: really I agree. There's just that part where like it's
- 11:55Speaker 2: almost like society says, you're not supposed to feel for
- 11:58Speaker 2: these guys.
- 11:59Speaker 3: Yeah, but you do because.
- 12:03Speaker 2: What you know, they're they're as human. They seem and
- 12:07Speaker 2: act and feel as human as you and I watching it,
- 12:11Speaker 2: and it's but that the thought of the life that
- 12:16Speaker 2: you had is not real.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I can't think of a of a of a
- 12:23Speaker 2: more tragic.
- 12:23Speaker 3: I mean, just the realization of like this is what
- 12:28Speaker 3: they're going to do with yah is just that I'm
- 12:31Speaker 3: just literally just to do that. I'll never I'll never
- 12:35Speaker 3: have what the original Sam Bell has.
- 12:38Speaker 2: It's a Mickey seventeen kind of thing. Yeah, they don't
- 12:40Speaker 2: give a shit about you.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Yeah, which I thought also was kind of a nice
- 12:45Speaker 3: little jab at corporate greed and corporate structure in the way.
- 12:49Speaker 3: Oh yeah, that the man, so to speak, just puts
- 12:53Speaker 3: its boot on your throat. Yeah, And it's like it
- 12:55Speaker 3: doesn't doesn't take into account these sorts of things.
- 12:58Speaker 2: And I don't know man sympathy to be it's so
- 13:01Speaker 2: cold and yeah, and there's no sympathetic nature to it.
- 13:06Speaker 2: But and I think that's almost how they see these clones.
- 13:09Speaker 2: But that's not but it's not true.
- 13:11Speaker 3: But to get all of that across in such a
- 13:14Speaker 3: small film that's basically just the Sam Rockwell Show ninety. Yeah,
- 13:19Speaker 3: it's just I mean to me, like you tip your
- 13:22Speaker 3: cap to the guy to Duncan Jones, like this is
- 13:25Speaker 3: just this was a fantastic effective storytelling to do on
- 13:29Speaker 3: five million dollars, which I don't know if you knew
- 13:32Speaker 3: this about it, like they use models for the sprawling
- 13:37Speaker 3: outside shots of the movie, opting to save the cost
- 13:42Speaker 3: of VFX. But I did notice it because I remember
- 13:48Speaker 3: this being like a really small film. I didn't look
- 13:50Speaker 3: up the budget or it's run at the box office
- 13:52Speaker 3: or anything like that before watching the movie. But watching it,
- 13:56Speaker 3: I kind of wondered, I'm like, I wonder if they're
- 13:59Speaker 3: using model for this because it didn't look to me particularly.
- 14:03Speaker 2: It fits so breathtaking and what they're and what they're.
- 14:06Speaker 3: It's almost like an endearing sort of thing.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Yeah, like it doesn't look cheap, I guess.
- 14:10Speaker 3: And Duncan Jones has talked in interviews about how like
- 14:14Speaker 3: he wanted this movie to kind of be an homage
- 14:18Speaker 3: to some of the science fiction.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Films the seventies that he grew up.
- 14:21Speaker 3: Watching, which I kind of thought, Yeah, that's a nice,
- 14:24Speaker 3: nice little touch for this film. It made nine point
- 14:27Speaker 3: eight million during its box office run. Wasn't even going
- 14:30Speaker 3: to get a run at the box office. I remember
- 14:33Speaker 3: court this was supposed to be like a direct to
- 14:36Speaker 3: DVD kind of thing, and then it debuted at I
- 14:41Speaker 3: want to say Sundance. I didn't jot it down.
- 14:43Speaker 2: I think it might have that sounds. I think that
- 14:45Speaker 2: could be right. But it won a bunch of stuff too.
- 14:48Speaker 3: Two thousand and nine Sundance Sundance Film Festival. Yeah, in
- 14:52Speaker 3: January of two thousand and nine. And after that, Sony
- 14:55Speaker 3: got a hold of it and was like, yeah, this
- 14:56Speaker 3: is going to get a theatrical release. And then I
- 14:59Speaker 3: mean to just a about double your money. You know
- 15:01Speaker 3: that's good business. You can't go broke making a profit.
- 15:04Speaker 3: Uh really you You mentioned this earlier, and I think it's
- 15:08Speaker 3: really interesting to look at where Duncan Jones went after this,
- 15:11Speaker 3: because this is a this is a good movie. And
- 15:14Speaker 3: I don't mean that as just like it's not just
- 15:18Speaker 3: good for the genre. It's not just a good sci
- 15:21Speaker 3: fi flip, but this is this is one that I
- 15:23Speaker 3: think says a lot. We've talked about some of the
- 15:25Speaker 3: things to come out of it.
- 15:26Speaker 2: It's thought provoking and provoking, and it's and it's not
- 15:29Speaker 2: all well I'm sorry, A lot of it is in
- 15:32Speaker 2: kind of subtle ways.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Now there's others where it's like boom, But then there's
- 15:36Speaker 2: other things where it's just quietly getting to you. Yeahs
- 15:42Speaker 2: as it's getting too as it's getting to them.
- 15:45Speaker 3: Fantastically acted from Sam Rock. Well, yes, I mean just
- 15:50Speaker 3: a great to think like, this is his directorial debut.
- 15:54Speaker 2: And I want to say, and that is David Bowie's son.
- 15:59Speaker 3: Is that right? Yeah? I didn't know that. I did
- 16:01Speaker 3: not know that. So Baby Nepo. Baby would go on
- 16:05Speaker 3: to direct twenty eleven, source Code twenty sixteen's Warcraft, twenty
- 16:11Speaker 3: eighteen's Mute, which is technically a sequel to Moon, and
- 16:16Speaker 3: then has an upcoming film titled Rogue Trooper, upcoming animated
- 16:22Speaker 3: science fiction film. So I never I never saw Mute
- 16:32Speaker 3: because it wasn't like Build as a sequel to Move.
- 16:35Speaker 2: Yeah. No, it is a Netflix movie.
- 16:36Speaker 3: Yeah, Alexander Scarsgard, Paul Rudd, Justin Thurreau. Yeah, that's good.
- 16:41Speaker 3: Name didn't really get good reviews.
- 16:43Speaker 2: No, it's not good.
- 16:44Speaker 3: And that's that's a constant across a lot of the
- 16:47Speaker 3: films that he did after Moon as well. What do
- 16:51Speaker 3: you think of his filmography Moon I.
- 16:54Speaker 2: Had, I actually enjoyed Source Code Jake jillnholl movie or
- 16:59Speaker 2: you can't. He kept having to go back to basically
- 17:02Speaker 2: the same thing, but again a sci fi kind of
- 17:05Speaker 2: action thriller this time.
- 17:07Speaker 3: Uh.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Clearly he got a bigger budget, But I actually liked
- 17:11Speaker 2: that one.
- 17:13Speaker 3: Uh.
- 17:13Speaker 2: And that's the last time I've liked a Duncan Jones warcraft.
- 17:18Speaker 3: I never I never saw it kind of feels like
- 17:23Speaker 3: capitalizing on the ip obviously from what I I from
- 17:28Speaker 3: what I read, it is like just a hot mess
- 17:30Speaker 3: of a movie. Yeah.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Yeah, it's very it looks ugly, stories awful, and I mean,
- 17:36Speaker 2: and maybe there was trouble behind the scenes too. I don't,
- 17:40Speaker 2: I'm not sure. But it ended up being a failure
- 17:44Speaker 2: on probably every front because as you can see, they
- 17:47Speaker 2: nothing else happened. Yeah, I mean, I think that that's
- 17:50Speaker 2: a big old popular I.
- 17:52Speaker 3: P Yeah, it is. And you know, it's one of
- 17:54Speaker 3: those things that.
- 17:56Speaker 2: But I had no idea Mute was considered a sequel
- 17:59Speaker 2: to Moon, and that that even that's more frustrating because
- 18:03Speaker 2: it it's nothing of the sort with Moon and it's
- 18:08Speaker 2: a again, it's a it's I just remember thinking it
- 18:11Speaker 2: was a stylish kind of want to be a Blade
- 18:14Speaker 2: Runner kind of thing. Yeah, but it just was not
- 18:18Speaker 2: it it it fell flat on on on probably every
- 18:23Speaker 2: aspect of it because it just it wasn't good. And
- 18:26Speaker 2: I hate to say that because it does that cast,
- 18:28Speaker 2: but it did them no favors.
- 18:31Speaker 3: Yeah. Oh, Sam Rockwell has a cameo in it as
- 18:36Speaker 3: Sam Bell.
- 18:38Speaker 2: I don't maybe that. I don't even remember that.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm gonna.
- 18:43Speaker 2: I'm curious where he fit in, but he maybe he
- 18:45Speaker 2: knew somebody, which Sam Bell.
- 18:49Speaker 3: Well, that's the question.
- 18:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:51Speaker 3: I did not realize Warcraft made four hundred and thirty
- 18:54Speaker 3: nine million at.
- 18:55Speaker 2: The box office guys on.
- 18:57Speaker 3: One hundred and sixty million dollar budget.
- 18:59Speaker 2: Wow, I guess that's why Duncan Jones got to make mute.
- 19:03Speaker 3: I'm maybe, yeah, that's gotta be. That's got to be
- 19:07Speaker 3: overseas though.
- 19:08Speaker 2: Oh I'm sure it is.
- 19:10Speaker 3: Yeah, oh yeah, because what I was reading was like
- 19:13Speaker 3: financial disaster, disappointing that stuff.
- 19:16Speaker 2: No, I think, Yeah, you can always count on the Bolsheviks.
- 19:23Speaker 3: So yeah, a couple more notes that I wanted to
- 19:28Speaker 3: get through. You mentioned it a second ago. Moon had
- 19:32Speaker 3: some really good run with critics associations, various film festivals,
- 19:39Speaker 3: stuff like that. It was kind of one of those
- 19:41Speaker 3: hot underground movies. Back in two thousand and nine. Duncan
- 19:44Speaker 3: Jones actually won a BAFTA for it for Outstanding Debut
- 19:48Speaker 3: by a British Writer, director or Producer.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Good for him.
- 19:50Speaker 3: So got that BAFTA for Moon, and I, you know,
- 19:53Speaker 3: I don't know what the maybe I could. I'm going
- 19:56Speaker 3: to look and see what the other nominees were back then.
- 20:00Speaker 2: But but especially for like that, like you said, this
- 20:03Speaker 2: little sci fi drama.
- 20:05Speaker 3: Really yeah, that's.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Really impressive.
- 20:12Speaker 3: Yeah. I have not heard of any of the other
- 20:16Speaker 3: films that were nominated in this category. But we're gonna
- 20:18Speaker 3: let We're gonna let Duncan Jones have his film.
- 20:21Speaker 2: Let me let me maybe I might know a couple.
- 20:23Speaker 3: Exam British psychological thriller film Stuart Hazel Dean.
- 20:30Speaker 2: I'm not familiar with that one.
- 20:32Speaker 3: Mugabbi and the White African Okay documentary Nowhere Boy. Oh yeah,
- 20:40Speaker 3: Sam Taylor John.
- 20:40Speaker 2: I like that one. He played Lennon, a young Lennon. Oh,
- 20:44Speaker 2: that was a good one.
- 20:46Speaker 3: Who who was in that? I don't see it.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Aaron Taylor Johnson, Oh okay, he played John a young
- 20:51Speaker 2: John Lennon very well, someone famous I thought played his mom.
- 20:56Speaker 2: But that opened the Nashville Film Festival that year.
- 20:59Speaker 3: I had no idea.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:01Speaker 3: And then Shifty by Aaron Creepy.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, no, nowhere Boys only one that instantly exam
- 21:09Speaker 2: sounds familiar, but I'm pretty sure I didn't see it.
- 21:14Speaker 3: So another thing that I thought was interesting. You've actually
- 21:17Speaker 3: kind of already brought this up a little bit too,
- 21:20Speaker 3: talking about Duncan Jones kind of wanting to pay homage
- 21:24Speaker 3: to grades of the genre with this film. The voice
- 21:28Speaker 3: of Gerdy Kevin Spacey is actually meant to be an
- 21:33Speaker 3: homage to the voice of hol from two thousand and
- 21:36Speaker 3: one of Space.
- 21:37Speaker 2: I feel like two thousand and one Space Odyssey is
- 21:40Speaker 2: basically that's what everyone tries to do. Still have not
- 21:44Speaker 2: seen it all.
- 21:45Speaker 3: Yeah, well, I mean it's a long, it's a it's
- 21:47Speaker 3: a sleepy Kubrick.
- 21:49Speaker 2: We've got a complicated relationship.
- 21:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I need to I need to watch that one again.
- 21:54Speaker 2: I need to give it back to you.
- 21:56Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I forgot. I've got the.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Intention of watching it, and then I end up watching
- 22:04Speaker 2: Moon and Ferris Buehler, Well.
- 22:07Speaker 3: We got to do these podcasts. Maybe that's what it takes.
- 22:10Speaker 3: We just need to do a podcast on that.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Kubrick Barry Lyndon.
- 22:16Speaker 3: Oh that's true. Yeah, that's true. Yeah, well we'll get
- 22:19Speaker 3: to that at some point. The last thing I've got
- 22:21Speaker 3: in my notes. Okay, did you know that this film
- 22:25Speaker 3: has a very special plate place in the heart of
- 22:28Speaker 3: Tennessee Titans fans?
- 22:30Speaker 2: No?
- 22:31Speaker 3: Do you know why? See if you remember it?
- 22:37Speaker 2: Oh, is it a football game he's watching.
- 22:40Speaker 3: No, when he wakes up, he gets out of bed,
- 22:43Speaker 3: he raises up and there is a poster on the
- 22:45Speaker 3: wall that has the Tennessee Titans logo. Oh really, he's
- 22:48Speaker 3: Titans at the bottom. So Sam Bell is a Titans fan.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Oh what was it? There is a poster on there?
- 22:57Speaker 2: Now I forgot. I think it was of a band
- 22:58Speaker 2: that I noticed. I did not know notice the Titans
- 23:00Speaker 2: poster in there. So that was extraly odd because I
- 23:04Speaker 2: don't even think he can't be from Tennessee.
- 23:07Speaker 3: The next time you watch it, just pay attention to that.
- 23:10Speaker 3: The scene when he's getting out of bed and like
- 23:12Speaker 3: putting on his clothes or whatever.
- 23:13Speaker 2: There is a Titans poster on the wall, and that
- 23:16Speaker 2: was in two thousand and nine, so we were what
- 23:18Speaker 2: ten years old, so something like that. Yeah, that's a
- 23:22Speaker 2: Titans team, not us.
- 23:23Speaker 3: Yeah, that was yeah, yeah, okay. Now that was the
- 23:29Speaker 3: year after they were the number one seed in the playoffs.
- 23:32Speaker 3: With Carrie Collins at quarterback. The Baltimore Ravens purposely tried
- 23:36Speaker 3: to injure Chris Johnson in the playoff game. They did
- 23:39Speaker 3: so he wasn't as effective, and then Algie Crumpler fumbled
- 23:43Speaker 3: the ball and the Ravens won the game, costing the
- 23:45Speaker 3: Titans probably their best chance to get to a Super
- 23:49Speaker 3: Bowl since was it ray Lewis? Ray Lewis was playing still?
- 23:53Speaker 2: Yeah, you know he killed someone.
- 23:55Speaker 3: Well allegedly. I don't know if we can be exposed
- 23:58Speaker 3: to legal issues.
- 23:59Speaker 2: Well didn't he go to court?
- 24:02Speaker 3: I don't remember.
- 24:03Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't want to. I don't want
- 24:06Speaker 2: to meet ray Lewis.
- 24:06Speaker 3: So he he might have he might have killed somebody.
- 24:09Speaker 3: We don't know. I don't know whether he did or didn't.
- 24:12Speaker 2: No, Algie Crumpler could have killed someone.
- 24:14Speaker 3: Yeah, for all we know.
- 24:15Speaker 2: I don't know where he went after. But yeah, I'm
- 24:18Speaker 2: glad you finally got to see it.
- 24:19Speaker 3: I'm glad that has slipped through the cracks for me
- 24:23Speaker 3: for quite some time.
- 24:24Speaker 2: I am I'm glad because and I'm glad that you
- 24:28Speaker 2: really enjoyed it, because I feel like I have built
- 24:30Speaker 2: it up because I just even even kind of like,
- 24:34Speaker 2: I'm glad I rewatched it, But I just remember thinking,
- 24:36Speaker 2: what a what a tremendous one man performance from some
- 24:42Speaker 2: I mean well, and what he's able to do and
- 24:44Speaker 2: keep you just engaged the whole time. But also the
- 24:49Speaker 2: the the opposite of what the acting opposite of yourself
- 24:57Speaker 2: with two distinct personalities, and on top of like you said,
- 25:03Speaker 2: the brilliant storytelling and those little homages are nice though,
- 25:08Speaker 2: like I now thinking back on the like exterior parts
- 25:13Speaker 2: and everything, that makes a lot more sense. But also
- 25:17Speaker 2: they did a nice job that the whole crew, because
- 25:21Speaker 2: again it doesn't come off as cheap or anything like.
- 25:24Speaker 2: And even the times where you know it's not Sam
- 25:26Speaker 2: rock I mean, you know Sam Rockwell is not fighting himself.
- 25:29Speaker 2: It's I've seen a lot worse. Like I don't want
- 25:32Speaker 2: people to think like, oh man, it's not they they
- 25:36Speaker 2: they did a terrific job. But man, if you you've
- 25:39Speaker 2: got to, I mean, I did a thing last year
- 25:43Speaker 2: and I feel like Sam Rockwell is kind of there.
- 25:46Speaker 2: He's not as insane. But I talked about Nicholas Cage
- 25:49Speaker 2: and a movie called The Surfer. It came out last May,
- 25:53Speaker 2: and one of the things I said was that you
- 25:56Speaker 2: he's in he's in it to win it, and Sam
- 25:58Speaker 2: Rockwell is and it does it. He's not off, like
- 26:03Speaker 2: totally goes off the rails like Cage can, but there's
- 26:08Speaker 2: just an energy and there's also a brilliance to him
- 26:11Speaker 2: that I think has always been there, but I think
- 26:14Speaker 2: more and more people have now discovered it. And I
- 26:16Speaker 2: know there's been like things like whole videos of just
- 26:20Speaker 2: like in every movie he's dancing. Yeah, so I love it,
- 26:26Speaker 2: but you want to see some of his finest acting.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Moon is it? Moon Is Is definitely it.
- 26:31Speaker 3: Do you want to take a stab at the Rotten
- 26:33Speaker 3: Tomatoes rating the Tomato meter?
- 26:36Speaker 2: Uh?
- 26:37Speaker 3: Who do you think loved this film? More critics or audiences?
- 26:40Speaker 2: I think critics did. I want to say, I think
- 26:44Speaker 2: it's high eighties, eighty seven is nineties okay.
- 26:50Speaker 3: And eighty nine for eighty fan so, I mean, it's
- 26:53Speaker 3: pretty pretty unanimously beloved film, which is again so crazy
- 26:58Speaker 3: to think what Duncan Jones would make after this movie.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Yeah, now source Code seemed like a kind of maybe
- 27:05Speaker 2: a natural progression. Yeah, and then I guess it's kind
- 27:09Speaker 2: of like you give somebody who's got a couple of
- 27:11Speaker 2: good ones under his belt, you're a BAFTA winner, why not? Warcraft?
- 27:17Speaker 3: Fair enough? Fair enough?
- 27:19Speaker 2: Why not?
- 27:20Speaker 3: I didn't prepare a lot of letterboxed reviews for this one,
- 27:24Speaker 3: but just scrolling through, there are a couple of good ones.
- 27:27Speaker 3: Best Actor in a leading role, Sam Rockwell. Best Actor
- 27:31Speaker 3: in a supporting role Sam Rockwell. Yeah, pretty fucked up
- 27:35Speaker 3: that the actress that played Sam Rockwell's daughter got paid
- 27:38Speaker 3: to call him daddy a couple of times when I
- 27:40Speaker 3: do it for free every day of my life. I
- 27:44Speaker 3: really thought the two of them were gonna fuck at
- 27:46Speaker 3: some point. Sam Rockwell was so good in this episode
- 27:53Speaker 3: of Black Mirror.
- 27:54Speaker 2: Oh, I've I kind of see that one coming. I
- 27:58Speaker 2: feel like that's what it is now, now that Black
- 28:00Speaker 2: Mirror has become. Yeah, this surreal thing is that that's
- 28:03Speaker 2: that's what it's compared to. But but yeah, I'm just
- 28:06Speaker 2: glad you got to see it. I'm glad I rewatched
- 28:08Speaker 2: it and it just reaffirm just how good that movie
- 28:12Speaker 2: is and just how great Sam rock Will is.
- 28:14Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, man, I will I will drink to that
- 28:17Speaker 3: happy New Year. Kicking off the new year on a
- 28:19Speaker 3: high note with Sam Rockwell's Moon from two thousand and nine.
- 28:23Speaker 3: If you haven't seen it, go check it out. That's
- 28:26Speaker 3: gonna do it for my notes here, Brandon, you got
- 28:28Speaker 3: any parting shots? Nope, Yeah, there we go. We'll we'll
